Steely dan at thier best
People either love Steely Dan or have little use for them. I happen to be in the first camp.
I was really excited to listen to this one and it didn’t disappoint. I already knew 4 of the 10 songs, and I was glad to hear the songs that were new to me to carry on the same style and quality. Very funky and groovy. The lyrics of each song tell a story, and each is so enticing. 9/10 album for me.
4.5 - Great
Do it again!
Great groovy album, love me some Steely Dan
I DON'T WANNA DO YOUR DIRTY WORK NO MORE --Tony Soprano, gentleman loser who never had the makings of a varsity athlete Definitely on the shortlist of greatest worst album covers. Don't trust anyone over thirty. I think Abe Lincoln said that. Don't trust anyone over thirty that doesn't like Steely Dan. I said that.
I was blown away. The hits were obvious, but there's a lot of deeper cuts here that are jams too. After a 2nd listen, this bumped from a 4 --> 5, (maybe a 4.5 in the end)
are you reelin in the beers amirite? Always good to listen to some STEELLAAYYY
4.7 stars Do It Again: Classic, great Dirty Work: Classic, good not great Kings: Good solos Midnite Cruiser: Classic, little whiny Only A Fool Would Say That: Sooo 70's, grows on you Reelin' In The Years: Classic, perfection, best Fire In The Hole: Has a groove Brooklyn (Holds A Charmer Under Me): steady a smooth Change Of The Guard: Guitar solos put it over the top Turn The Heartbeat Over Again: clunky, worst Overall great album
vier bis fünf Do It Again Reelin' In the Years
NZ's theme song
Steely Dan’s first and possibly most atypical. It is a band album, but a band in which the lead singer sings lead on two, co-lead on three and backing vocals on some of the rest, and the drummer takes lead on one song. That said two of those songs, “Dirty Work”, on which singer David Palmer takes lead, and “Midnite Cruiser” sung by drummer Jim Hodder are among the gems, although the way Palmer pronounces Meed-e-val in the former has always bugged me. Otherwise, as he would on most Dan songs afterwards, Donald Fagen takes lead and the presence of a ‘lead’ singer was only because of Fagen’s nervousness about singing live. The best known songs are “Do It Again” and “Reelin’ in the Years”, both classics, like the rest of the album, a little more akin to southern Californian bands of the time - there’s a little CSN, Poco, Eagles in there - but pointing the way to later Steely Dan recordings which leant heavier on the jazz influences. Elliot Randall’s guitar solo in “Reelin’” is close to perfect.
Gonna have to give another 5 to SD. It just makes you feel good in your soul.
Really good probably my favourite steely dan album. Every song is so melodic and well performed. These guys know how to make goos sounding music and they're not afraid to show it. 9/10 Favourite: Do It Again Least Favourite: None
All of a sudden I’m 6 years old again :’) Faves: Do It Again, Dirty Work, Midnite Cruiser. Rock/Jazz. American/English. November 1972. 10 songs. 40:57 runtime.
Such a banger album. Each song works together but is also unique so it doesn’t feel repetitive. Only detraction is I don’t always like Fagens vocals. 9/10
People say there are much better Steely Dan albums but this is MY favorite. Rounding up from 4.5
the classics... THE CLASSICS
This goes harder than it has any right to. So many bangers.
ISteely Dan Band's magnific debut album.
Some of the best songwriting and playing you can find.
I feel like I could go to any song on here and bop to it in some way. Each song is well crafted. Full but not busy. Complete album.
I love this album. I think the incongruity between the rhythm and the lyrics is brilliant and it’s on every song
Awesome Album!
It might be a controversial opinion, but I think this is my favourite Steely Dan album. There is plenty of spontaneity here and some edges to the music. I totally love it, it's a masterpiece. Brilliant songwriting. Yes, it must be your cup of tea, well, it is mine. I mean, the opening of 'Do it again' on itself is enough to secure Steely Dan's place in (modern) music history.
Jazz rock style. Peak melody and sound. One of the favs.
As soon as I hit play, I knew this was going to be a banger. As someone who is late to the game for yacht rock (which I know is a term these guys hate), I’ve been listening to City Pop pretty heavily the past 5 or 6 years, and yacht rock scratches that same itch. So this album was just a lot of fun, and really fit my mood this morning.
Automatic 10/10 for me. Steely Dan can do no wrong.
Listened, liked, LOVED!
I’m a Dan Fan
Pa' vete, Steely Dan. No sé del gusto musical de Carlin pero he shat on you lol 1. Do It Again. Nice intro vale. Hey I like it! Sabrosongo. Calidad. Liked. 2. mmm... 3. Calidad el explote musical. Liked 4. Pretty good Dan! Nice guitar solos! 5. Good! 6. Más boring, good solo pero boring. Skipping after 3:18. 7. FIRE IN THE HOLE. That's what I'm talking about! FUCK yeah con ese pianito, Dan! The fucking ending! Loved it! 8. Ok 9. Aight. 10. Not bad, or memorable. But verga, I liked it. 4.7 pero merece su 5. Good Steely! DOOM was more right than Carlin in this one lol
How have you not already listened to this album?!
153/1089 - Excellent debut for an excellent band. I think Imagine has a stupid message too. Not as big of a fan as the tracks where Fagen isn't the lead vocalist and I'm glad they got Michael McDonald later on in the band.
Fabulous!! A classic
mejor q el otro que ya tocó
Capaz el mejor disco debut de la historia
juju
An awesome classic
já ouvi, sensacional
5 stars Great band and great songs
Perfektion OCH sväng! Trummorna, rytmsektionen! Femma
a debut studio album that combines soft rock with jazzy guitar solos, yacht rock elements, and a classic style that is incredibly well developed for a debut album.
Ja godsamme wat een weergaloos lekkere plaat is dit toch. De eerste zes tracks zijn stuk voor stuk bangers. De simpele hooks zijn zo effectief, zo catchy. Can't Buy a Thrill kan je altijd opzetten. 9/10 Highlights Dirty Work (hun beste track, love it) Midnite Cruiser Only a Fool Would Say That
Had heard it before. Bad album? Only a fool would say that.
I love this so much, every song is a delight to listen to. Pure joy from beginning to end, the production is excellent and makes every instrument sound immaculate.
Nature's perfect album
perfect beach album
Didn't look forward to this since I remember his last album I had as a tad dull. But, as always when I'm reluctant for an album, I had a great time. What an opener! Perfect for a sunny morning cycling to work, and I danced my way through the opening round to the rest! Thanks, Mr. Steely
They couldn't perform at the Ziggo Dome last year. Was planning for the show where they would play before The Eagles (who I don't like that much) but sadly they cancelled the show.
Yes!!! I F*CKING LOVE Steely Dan.
Grandios! Ziemlich chillig. Gleich zu den Favoriten hinzugefügt!
I shouldn't like this, and maybe it's a high 4, but whatever. Do It Again and Reelin in the Years are GOAT tracks, Only a Fool Would Say That is a new one to me as not far behind those. Not what I typically go for but this is really good.
Awesome
Love The Dan!
My ‘78 reissue of this slaps so fuckin hard. Well played and still playing well
Seems impossible for me to dislike a Steely Dan song. They knew what the heck they were doing.
So moody and smooth. I miss ‘Ricky don’t loose that number’ but for the rest almost all the greats are here.
One of the best ever debut albums of all time
Una locura
Hmmm let’s see…YUH
Awesome!
Hyper polished but in the best way. The deep cuts are also great here. Not a note out of place.
One of the most important albums of the 70s and not even their best. The hits are the hits, but Kings and Fire In The Hole give you a glimpse of where the band is going.
Love this, has all the Steely Dan bangers!
Probably my favorite Steely Dan album. It’s got a lot more blues and funk to it than some of their later albums.
Album impresionante, los únicos "puntos bajos" son la primera y última canción. Siempre entre canción y canción a la expectativa con que van a entretenerte. Rock con un buen groove bien de los 70s como debería ser
Yeah, I get it.
Wow, I mean they truly are the goats. Unreal album, hit after hit. Such an easy listen and brings me back to the Kano island days. 9.4/10
Not much needed to say. One of the best of all time.
Awesome album so groovy
love
It's been a long time since hearing this album in its entirety. Nice take back
no notes, no skips. it's the best
This doesn't seem like a first album. The music is so clean, tight, and captivating in a such a melodramatic way, it just seems impossible that this is a first effort. Each track is instrumentally dense, yet almost everyone has their chance to shine from track to track. The lyrics are sometimes haunting, contemplative, or even witty, but they are always poetic and pushing you beyond a casual listen. This is the first album in a while where I looked up in shock when there were no more tracks to enjoy. Really fun album!
Can't Buy a Thrill is personally one of my favorite albums on this list, and Steely Dan is unarguably one of the most iconic bands from the 70's. Their fusion of rock and jazz is impeccable creates a style like none other. Can't Buy A Thrill is their best album for many (I prefer Aja, but that's personal preference) and it's clear why. They choose understandable lyrics and licks while fusing in a little jazz every now and then. The production is immaculate as well. Every instrument can be clearly heard and the sounds are very clean, which adds this clean rock feel that you find in so many Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, etc. albums. What's the most interesting to me is that they covered up the repetitiveness of typical rock music unlike most other bands do. Instead of forcing an awkward form or purposely creating dramatic changes in order to hide the formulaic rock that was so common. Instead they use great production and jazz harmonies to cover up their rather formulaic style. Great album, 5 stars.
Most groups take about 4-5 albums to get this good but Steely Dan leads with an absolute masterpiece chock full of hits and great album tunes… and then they ONLY GET BETTER!
It’s hard to believe that this was their debut album. The lyrics challenged me yet still respected my intelligence.
Hell yeah Yacht Rock
Classic. Need I say more
Flawless groovy musical shit
I love a couple of songs from these fellas already so I knew I was in for some heat. It also helps that a majority of those songs are straight from this album. This was a blast to listen to. You got amazing production, an iconic vocal performance from Donald Fagan, and insane replayability across most if not all of the songs on this. Top tier soft rock album. Top 3 Favorite: Only A Fool Would Say That, Do It Again, and Dirty Work No bad songs 4.6/5
Classic
Steely Dan is one of the big influences of many of my favourite artists that took me a long time to dive into. Really incredible stuff. Aja is definitely my preferred Steely Dan, but this is right up there with it. I have a very vivid memory of being 8 or 9 years old at my Grandma’s house, ready to go to bed, and my Uncle bringing me out to his truck to play me the greatest hits of Steely Dan. A real life changing moment.
So good
I've been obsessed with Steely Dan for over a decade. This album slaps super hard. Not a weak track on it. Only album featuring SD as a "band" beyond Fagan and Becker. More rock tinged than jazz at this point. "Do It Again" is one of the better album openers out there. CBAT is the first SD album I heard and fell in love with, sending me down a massive rabbit hole not only when it comes to the band's own catalog, but other yacht rock/jazz rock/jazz fusion groups in general. 5/5
Absolutely love the distinctive sound of Steely Dan. The unmistakable vocals of Donald Fagen. A class of its own and deserves to be on this influential list. Brilliant 👏
Hell yes!
This album was very enjoyable - light hearted and fun. I would especially like to point out one of the songs “Fire in the hole” - the lyrics are very important to me since I feel the exact same way right now, this was a great album :))
Very good, very good vibes, hits perfectly.
tony soprano singing along to dirty work
As I suddenly got unexpectedly drunk off a triple Last Word [equal parts gin, fake green chartreuse [a.k.a. Faccia Brutto], Maraschino liqueur, and lime juice] in an attempt to finish off 2/4 of the bottles on my bar cart, my GOD did listening to this feel like witnessing the heavens part!!! Being cocktail drunk in your apartment on a random Tuesday is the best setting to listen to Steely Dan, and just taps into a certain vibe that only they can realistically achieve. Once I sobered up a few hours later, I gave it a fair[er], more critical relisten, and yeah– this holds the fuck up. It's hooky and pop-centric, but also jazzy and ✨weird✨, and it's never too much on either side to piss off fans who prefer one or the other. It strikes the perfect balance, and nearly 500 albums in, I think that immediately qualifies it as something special. The fact that there are SO MANY timeless hits on here– like, Grade-A songs everyone still knows, songs that are literally TikTok trends!– underlines Can't Buy A Thrill's influence and general enjoyability. When I noticed this had the highest average rating of any Steely Dan album on here, even above Aja (which I feel is a flawless record), I was skeptical, but after multiple listens, I get it. This is not only better than Aja, it's better than most albums I've heard in my life. This is infectious, it's fun, it's bright, it's positive, it's a vibe, but it's also nuanced, complex, intriguing, and serious as shit. You can hear everyone from Sade to Thundercat to Jack Antonoff to James Blake on here. The beauty lies in the fact that Can’t Buy A Thill is able to be flawlessly fun while also being flawlessly nerdy, and, most importantly, it delivers 10 amazing songs while doing so. Catch me in Brooklyn cocktail drunk vibing to Steely Dan this summer, clearly ✨
I NEED A BEER, I NEED A JOINT, AND I NEED THIS ALBUM!
Instant 5 I don’t NEED to listen to this album to give an accurate review, but don’t mind if I do. Hell I might even do it again 😝 Happy fucking friday The boys can cook
#1 Steely Dan apologist right here. Bought this in a used bin freshman year of high school and never looked back. Potentially the most pretentious band of all time but I'll be damned if Do It Again doesn't slap. Do It Again unironically domino effected me studying music composition in college and led me down the demon path of AV, all thanks to the steam powered dildo. The hits on this album hit and the fodder are all fun. I won't lie and say they're all incredible, but I love this album all the way through.
Impossibly chill and smooth, it's just genuinely fun to listen to this. Incredible musicianship, crisp songwriting and a suite of singles and legendary songs, I cannot think there exists a human on earth that can't jam to reeling in the years.
70s rock just hits the spot. That was some good stuff
I unashamedly love a bit of Dad Rock. Catchy melodies and good melodies, what's not to like? Reelin in the Years is an anthem Having said that, I think Steely Dan are better than a lot of your middle-of-the-road soft rock, some of their lyrics are quite thought provoking. The jazzier elements of this album also sets it apart i think.. e.g. the piano intro of Fire in the Hole or sax solo of Dirty Work Great album
THE Yacht Rock album. Bunch of American white dudes realized Black America was making all the swanky, cool music and wanted a piece of the action, and BOY they got it. Do It Again is one of the coolest songs ever made. So is Only a Fool Would Say That. Midnite Cruiser and Dirty Work take equal 2nd place for me. Turn That Heartbeat earns Bronze. I love this album. Five.
absolute classic - love it
Something about this was the best thing I've heard in a while, loved it! Feel good rock. The piano was great, especially on Fire In The Hole.
Not their best but excellent all the same
The kings of Yacht Rock
One of my personal favorites. Whenever those social media things convince me to list my top 25 albums this one always gets into my top 5. Aside from the musicianship and writing, the production and studio quality of work was unsurpassed in its time. I love this album!
Easy
loveee
- If all you think of is "soft rock" when you think about Steely Dan, then you don't get them and you never will. Certainly one of the great debut records ..... -
i love steely dan, such smooth and crisp sound
Incredible first album by this band. Starts strong with two memorable songs, it shows down the lace for a bit until it returns to the most known tracks. The second half is more manageable, but the rhythm, the grooves, and most important, the feeling doesn't go away. Love it.
artistry... tätäkö se on., tämäkö on populaarimusiikin huippu? noh tämä albumi sentään oli ennen kun kaveruksista tuli perfektionisti pretentious paskoja. tässä ehkä jopa ei olla orjia, jopa tykätään musiikista. ei olla orjana studiossa kurkku kuivana yksimässä nyt perfect 6 second pop drum solo over here.. put perfect pop drum solo here (will be one of incredible wonders of music) tässä vähänniinku ollaan vaan.. ollaan vaan ja nautitaan, kurkku märkänä.. juo vaan.. juo vaan (vettä) jos haluat.. saa mennä vessaan joo mee vaan vessaan milloin kun haluat.. tarvi kysyä. hei ei tarvi kysyä mee vaan vessaan kun tuntuu että pitää käydä pissalla, nii sit mee vaa... tarvi kysyy vittu.. do it again
One of the best albums ever made if you ask me. Banger upon banger upon banger
Jag gillar faktiskt även låtarna med den andra sångaren, som jag aldrig minns vad han heter men skit samma. Älskar den här skiten
As tight and playful as debut albums get. The production is stellar and with an opening track like “Do It Again”, you know you’re in for a good time.
Had heard (and I like) most of these songs before.
this was really enjoyable to listen to and reelin in the years and dirty work are classics. would play on a boat 10/10
Not the first time I listened to this and will not be the last. Love this album.
I've always loved Steely Dan, however, I'm not gonna come here and say that I don't understand what's people's problem with them. I guess they're too jazzy for the pop fans, too poppy for the rock fans and too rocky for the jazz fans. However, both in this record and in "Aja", Steely Dan show a perfect combination of influences from all these genres through a great sense of musicianship and songwriting ability.
The best produced album ever.
Great first album for this, as I already liked a few songs. Listening to the whole album is something else, love it.
This was a damn near perfect album. So many hits were awesome and I was into a lot of the other songs. Classic
Any Steely Dan is 5 stars.
It's not summertime, but boy the listening is e a s y. I mainly knew of Steely Dan as the meme of a dad band, and you know what dads? You're onto something. I didn't realize how many songs I knew on this album, or that they were even Dan tunes (are we allowed to just call them Dan?). Every song was kinda perfect in a very non-showy way. They all sounded like when someone is so good at something that it looks effortless. The whole time I was thinking "huh, thats a good song" in a way that washed over me, but in a pleasant way - not a boring same-y way. I hereby get it. Album cover: (A) Great colors and an overall excellent image
I always forget that this was Steely Dan's debut album. Still hard to believe, as it sounds so polished and also add in the fact that some of the group's biggest singles are featured here. It's a smooth and groovy listen, with plenty of jazzy harmonies and even some mambo/Latin influence sprinkled in. I don't really know what else to say, everything goes down pretty easily here with a tight 40 min runtime. I personally think "Midnite Cruiser" stands out above the rest of the tracks, but there really aren't any duds here. I already gave "Aja" a 5, and I feel that this is parallel, if not a stronger album given the overall pieces.
It’s crazy to me that this was a debut album. It’s crammed full of catchy hooks and sounds so effortless and complex at the same time. Already knew this album but its reminded me I need to listen to more steely dan.
Heard this album a lot recently as its my flatmates favourite vinyl. For good reason, its fantastic
Hooray! More Steely Dan! I mean this unironically. I didn't know I was a fan until this project, but I've rated the last albums I was given 4, 4, 4 (and 5 for Nightfly). Happy to hear some more. That said, even though I'm loving it, there's no reason to have quite so much Steely Dan on this list. You know what, why not? More Steely Dan!
Smooth and sonorous. Lovely listen.
hell yeah more steely dan!! peak oldhead music. this album is a peak example of what i'd call "music therapy", music that just makes you feel all relaxed and removes all the tension in your body... i imagine myself making champagne in a hut in the summer time. sit down, take a load off, enjoy the vibes. you'll enjoy every track and that's a guarantee.
instruments feast
Love “do it again” by steely Dan! Never listened to the album it released on.
Beautiful lush instrumentation and well mastered.
Snarky rock/jazz perfection
Perfect album
A great album to experience, really. Would recommend to others.
Loved it. Feel good 70s
STEELY DAN SUMMER IN JANUARY!!!!!!!!!!! 5/5
5/5. Love that gee-tar. This is the kind of album I am excited to discover — a band I’ve heard in passing but never sat down and listened to, then discovering I fucking love it?? I can’t believe I haven’t been listening to steely dan like this my entire life. Might call my mom up about this one.
Steely Dan has gotta be one of the top 5 funniest bands of all time, an imagine being insane perfectionists, insanely critically adored, and extremely divisive all while making this gentle jazzy soft rock. That’s fucking hilarious. The best part is that the critics are right
Album 641 of 1001 Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill (1972) Rating : 5/ 5 Awesome debut album. Rock, Jazz, Latin, Bossa nova, Pop...they bring a bit of all. Such a clean sound that brings a "meticulous attention to detail". Innovative sound, great songwriting and brilliant craftsmanship. Stands the test of time.
Love it, this list has shown me I'm a Steely Dan fan. So groovy.
Yes I’m white, American, 36 and male. I think this album (most Steely Dan albums) have a part of my DNA coding. But, man, it’s good. Musicianship is on point, songs are diverse, and there are 3 massive hits that all sound totally different. These guys are crazy, but they can catch some damn lightning.
YESSSSSS YES YES YES I LOVE TJIS ALBUM I LOVE STEELY DAN AND THIS IS A FANTASTIC ALBUM!!!!! Front to back zero skips and all bangers. God this is a beautiful album and the album that got me into steely Dan. So hype and I cannot believe this is their debut album. Phenomenal 10/10 Aja was my first album on the generator and I was so stoked to get it and then gave it a 4. And I kick myself every day for doing that cause it’s literally a perfect album upon relisten. I am so sorry steely Dan I love u
Hands down my favorite Steely Dan album
Really enjoyed this album. Previously had only heard Steely Dan when a song would come on. Loved nearly everything about this though. And had a few “oh, I didn’t know was them” songs. Tough to rate, but I’m going to round up and go…
Great times with Don and Walter. This is an insane first album. It's got all of the ingredients but less of the (indulgent!) jazz of later SD. I didn't realize that so many of the vocals weren't Don/Walter I like that it's a very straight ahead album...the sound is fully formed but most songs are 3-4 minutes and they feel like they need to earn your listen. "Only A Fool Wood Say That" is...yacht rock (peep the HBO doc if you haven't, if only for Fagen's phone call) My recent favorite and confirmed on this listen is "Fire In The Hole"--moody, swinging, angry piano playing. "Change Of The Guard" is also great some awesome guitar sounds and flourishes. For those keeping score at home...it's 1972 and mono is gone and this is released as stereo mix as well as a four-channel quadraphonic mix...I love human hubris...spend the 60s fucking up stereo mixes and there's like 5 years where people have a handle on it and we go up to 4 channels. Wikipedia tells me that was a commercial failure and anything more than stereo didn't find traction until the 90s with surround sound home systems.
Take that Ananda Shankar! That’s a sitar solo if I’ve ever heard one. I don’t have a ton to say about this one, it feels a little like wallpaper in my life. Over time certain songs have stood out to me over different stretches. Kings was one I loved for a while, lately it’s been Only a Fool Would Say That. I’ll try not to avoid hyperbole because we have been on a 1001 heater, but this is probably my favorite Steely Dan song. I had always loved it and then I learned it’s about John Lennon and that gave the song a lot more life. Something about “peers” of legends criticizing each other that really fires me up. The only version we hear 50 years later is that he was the greatest, altruistic rock god, not that he was an obnoxious and at times naive idealist. I love John Lennon ftr (where are the Beatles records?) That plus it being flawlessly written and recorded makes it special. Overall this is a crazy debut record. Definitely where a lot of Steely Dan fans begin I’m sure. Lately I’ve been more drawn to their later stuff (The Royal Scam and Aja) but this will always show up on the rotation. My Dad was always playing “Everything Must Go” I think the final boss of Dad life. Dropped the “did you know Dirty Work was about a dildo? And so was the band name” this summer. Got hit with a “no shit, who doesn’t know that?” AND a “wait, really?” so I guess it still plays.
6/5. Kings, midnight cruiser, fire in the hole - hook this shit directly to my nipples and jolt me till I scream, baby. There isn’t a single choice that is phoned in or expected, no riff that’s not alive. I can’t believe they made this shit when they were like 24. This album fucking rips.
A different side of Steely Dan from what we heard on Aja. Jaw dropping debut album This feels much more like a classic rock album with really skilled players - like Chicago. The history on this album is interesting and believable. Fagen and Becker seemed exceedingly talented for their age. Im actually glad they didnt go into something like Aja right away and started with a clearly more pop driven album. Its a artifact of what their talent could do for the masses. It hits a high standard
I love Steely Dan and I love this album. It isn't my favorite of theirs, but has so many good songs. Wild range of styles on here and they do them all well. Distinctive for having the original lead vocalist on Dirty Work (I'm sure someone in this group has looked up his name).
Some random notes: The top four Steely Dan songs from Spotify are on this album, haven’t seen that density from many bands on this. Absolutely insane this was their debut. Aja is still a better, more interesting and more cohesive album. New to me favorites: Kings, Midnight Cruiser, Heartbeat. Somehow Reelin’ might be the song I’ve heard the most, but least favorite on this listen. Overall, the non-hits on this album are better than the hits. Change of the Guard is the loosest I’ve heard SD sound - kind of rocks. The guy who rips that guitar solo is Skunk Baxter, session player and eventual Doobie Brothers guitarist. In the rabbit hole: Skunk later became interested in and self-taught himself missile defense systems from an aviation magazine subscription, eventually getting a second career with real jobs and a security clearance. Plug for new Yacht Rock dock-umentary on HBO. Fagen makes the best appearance of the film. Made me want to look at how many repeats we’ve gotten in the last 100+: LZ, Fela, Cohen, Van Halen, White Stripes, Stevie, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Marvin, Bowie, Bob…
Well, I wasn't expecting to give a Steely Dan album 5 stars but here we are. Can be boring at times and I understand the "dad rock" criticism. But there's something to be said for an album you can just put on and enjoy the creative lyrics/music if you want or just let it fill up the background
Look at you steely dan
Absolutely awesome. If you find a better six songs to launch a debut album, I need to find out more (john.cena@gmail.com). Listened to this for the first time in an incredible seaside town in Western Italy this summer. Blue skies, blue sea, beautiful women, blissful scenes. The perfect music to accompany it. Have yet to find a Steely Dan album that gets close to this masterpiece.
Rating: 9.5/10 Amazing production, songwriting, and solos throughout. There is a warm feeling to this album that resonates with me so much.
BANGERS ONLY DAD ROCK IS BACK BABY!!! To be added to a camp dad jamz playlist
Peak dad rock. Came back to give this a five because the more I listen, the better it gets.
Reelin' in the Years is one of my favorite songs that I had no idea what it was called or who it was by, but it's a song that constantly gets stuck in my head for days. And that song is just casually placed in the middle of this album, while surrounded by already excellent music. The whole album is a lot of fun. They manage to keep the same vibes and groove, while each song is unique and identifiable from each other. I think the solo sections really help out with that. It's honestly a joy to listen to. Favorite Song(s): Dirty Work, Reelin' in the Years, Fire in the Hole
I distinctly remember hearing Reelin' in the Years on top 40 radio when it first came out. That was my intro to Steely Dan, but I didn't really become a big fan until college when a friend got me hooked. One of my all-time favorite bands. While The Royal Scam remains my favorite of their albums, this is a great one too.
This was great all the way through and sounds like it came out so much later than it did to me! The melodies are strong, and the grooves were heavy throughout. Plus the instrumentation throughout was incredible. The guitar solos on “Do It Again”, “King” and “Midnight Cruiser” were all awesome.
Overall: 9/10 Coincidentally, I just got really into Steely Dan this year! I love this debut, it's a bit disjointed and a couple of tracks are less than stellar, but I give it a pass as they were still figuring out their sound. Songs like Do It Again, Kings and Only a Fool Would Say That will never not get me hyped. Now I just need a copy on vinyl that doesn't skip during the guitar solo in Reelin' in the Years. Fav Song: Do It Again Least Fav Song: Change of the Guard
Perfection
I have to admit when I was a teen (in the late 70's), I wasn't a big fan of Steely Dan. At the time, the music seemed so over-produced, commercial sounding and not-so-thrilling, but you know what when you grow up and listen to all kinds of different music, your tastes and priorities change, but music has always been an integral part of my life. I really started listening to Steely Dan after I absorbed a couple of record collections with music heavily from the 70's, which included Can't Buy A Thrill, Pretzel Logic and Aja. These records hit me hard, the thrill was back and listening with fresh set of older mature ears I now consider these albums essential listening, not only Steely Dan's discography, but popular music in general. There is an unexplainable comfort in listening to the opening lines of Do It Again, Dirty Work and Reelin' In The Years. To me, it's a toss up what is the best Steely Dan record and since I gave Pretzel Logic 5 stars, I follow suit with Can't Buy A Thrill.
4.7 - First half is too good that the second half had to tail off which was sad. Absolute tunes on this album though
Better than I remember.
Perfect to listen to, feels like wind in my hair with the top down.
They hit it out of the park with this debut. My favorite SD album.
Was looking forward to more Steely Dan after getting them the first time. Not disappointed, this one is a lot of fun as well. Great guitar work, fun songs, very chill. Love it. Really feeling the Steely Dan sound, even though I gave the last one a 4, I'm giving this one a 5. Best song: Kings
Killer debut from the Dan
Just banger after banger. Surprised how much of the album I already knew.
Excellent!
The first SD classic, contains the best song (Dirty Work).
Possibly my least favourite Steely Dan album, but still very good, of course.
An enjoyable classic but still surprising
Nearly impeccable record that I've listened to many times. It has lots of tight, classic tracks with great composition, jazzy licks, incredible musicianship and produced to perfection. I was shocked to learn it was actually their debut album.
A quintessential 5. I love this album so much. Too many iconic songs to have it be any less. The whole album stands out.
Perhaps the singles are overplayed but they are still killer. And all of the non singles (other than Fire in the Hole, just can’t get into that one yet) are very strong as well. 4.5/5 ? 4.75?
an absolute banger and so fun to listen to.
Steely Dan stands alone as the most magnificent rock band of all time. It’s a hill I will happily die on. So much has been written about this record that I feel it’s almost a waste of time to try to elaborate further than the fact that this is a top 5 album ever for me. It’s not my favourite Steely Dan record, but it’s still head and shoulders above everything else on this list. “Kings” and “Change of the Guard” are my personal favourite songs from this album. I’d give it 10 stars if I could.
For most bands, an album like “Can’t Buy A Thrill” wouldn’t be super popular among their devoted fans: it’s their first album before they really cemented the heavily jazz-tinged sound they’re most loved for, and it’s full of commercially very successful tracks which can often be divisive among the fanbases of other bands. Steely Dan avoids all of this because their debut album is the best yacht rock album ever made and everyone loves yacht rock. Musically, there are hints here of the outsized influence jazz will have on later records, and there’s also a bit of Latin flavor, especially on “Do It Again” and “Only a Fool Would Say That”, which is a delight. The production also sounds distinctly like a Steely Dan record, and there are points where the musical phrasing is unmistakably Fagen/Becker. The lyrics, too, are in their trademark style. It’s not that it doesn’t sound like a Steely Dan record, it’s just made from a different mold. But it’s still a damn fine album and one of my favorites from the Dan. If I had to pick a fault, it’s that “Fire in the Hole” and “Change of the Guard” aren’t quite as strong as the rest of the album… but I don’t feel the need to pick a fault. 9/10
Honestly I am impressed with how many hits are on this album.
this album has already found its way in my record collection. I love the length energy fromt his album. Sadly havent heard from steely dan something that has reached this peak imo. 5*
Do it again, Dirty work and Reelin' in the years. Amazing album, and I just love Steely Dan. The group name is taken from the name of a gigantic dildo from the book Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. I like that fact.
Never fails to make me smile and sing along!
This is a great first album. It has several of their 'Greatest Hits' - 'Do It Again', 'Dirty Work', 'Midnite Cruiser' 'Reelin' in The Years' ...
Fantastic listen, really enjoyed this one with the Jazz influences
As good as it gets for classic rock. Smooth as hell and the whole thing works together beautifully.
Production and musicianship outstanding. So clean for something recorded in the 70s. Didn't think I'd enjoy this one so much, another 5 star for me
I know this one front to back and don't need an excuse to relisten. I'll do it anyway even though at this rate, Steely Dan is gonna be one of my top artists of the year. Do It Again is such a smooth opener, Dirty Work is a top ten favourite song at this point, Only a fool is a classic, and Reelin' in the years just makes me happy. The rest of the album tracks also work very well. One of my favourite albums, I am so fond of it. 5
Great melodies rhythms and vocal harmonies. Doesn’t sound like anything I have ever heard before. Really unique. High quality. Well produced. A great album.
Yacht rock 102
A wonderful jazz rock album. Every song hits, great instrumentation, incredible harmonies and vocals. It's a feel good album throughout and shows why Steely Dan went on to be legends.
Genuinely only upset that I didn't get this on a workday. One of my favorites ever
And you left out this brilliant album from the new version of 1001 for the sake of f. Kanye West. and SZA's panties. Jesus Christ! What a world!
From the beginning, one of the great bands of all time. And nobody had better production skills than these two dudes, nobody.
From the start of that much sampled iconic conga part in Do It Again, Can't Buy A Thrill is a special album. I've heard this my whole life, starting on my older brothers' turntables, and it still sounds fresh. Steely Dan are known for their production. Every time I hear this album, I hear something new (like the arpeggiod rhythm guitar in the Dirty Work introduction on the right side of the mix!). Liked Songs Added: - Do It Again - Dirty Work - Kings - Midnite Cruiser - Reelin' In The Years - Fire In The Hole
Astounding. I am familiar with a lot of these tracks, and there’s a good reason for their popularity, but even the lesser tracks are still pretty good. A pleasure to listen to, with fantastic production and orchestration.
Since this site sent me Pretzel Logic a few months ago, I have become a huge fan of Steely Dan and his records have become part of my listening routine. And of course, their debut album is also part of this description. It has some really good songs, some really wonderful ones and also one of the best songs of the 70s: Reelin' In The Years which, after just a few plays, has already entered my select playlist of my favorite type of music: Road Trip Songs! Not just any song I put on this playlist. It took about 10 years to put together 50 songs and this year alone, Steely Dan released two including Rikki Don't loose that Number which was also one that won me over immediately! Anyway, I don't have much else to say about this album. I just have to thank this site for introducing me to this wonderful band! Another very easy 5 stars!
Such a quintessential and masterfully composed album of timeless tunes. Great grooves, instrumentation, and songwriting through and through. I know the meme exsists that this is certifiable dad rock but, it does fuck so hard.
Fantastic mix of chill, catchy and complex. 5/5
Smoothly relaxing Clarity and precision Make all day chill tones
Give me a miller high life, a grill, a cigarette, and Steely Dan and you will give me happiness
Absolute banger
i am physically incapable of rating this any lower than five stars
I love steely dan.... this album was absolutely great to listen to 10/10 love the vibes
This is amazing, this is like the Beatles with as much swag as possible. A+
Wow. Nvr heard of Dan but this is fire
Steely Dan always seemed like one of those bands with a towering reputation in the United States but less recognition elsewhere. I knew the name but didn’t think I knew the music—until I hit play on Can't Buy a Thrill and instantly recognized so many of the tracks. These songs have not just shown up in countless soundtracks; they’ve become classics of their era, woven into the fabric of 70s rock. In my mind, few bands have delivered an opening one-two punch as tight as “Do It Again” and “Dirty Work,” especially on a debut. On paper, this kind of ultra-smooth 70s sound and slick production shouldn’t be my thing, but the technical proficiency, unpredictable arrangements, and sheer quality of songwriting had me hooked. I ended up playing the album a few times on repeat without even realizing it. Maybe this is a sign I’m getting older, but there are times when I just want to sit back and relax with guitar music, rather than be pummeled by riffs. Can't Buy a Thrill isn’t short on big moments—just listen to the solos in “Reelin’ In the Years” or “Change of the Guard”—but these moments feel like part of the bigger picture, rather than the main attraction. What I liked best was the balance between accessible, feel-good tracks and hidden complexities. This is music you can enjoy or obsess over, depending on your mood. I fully understand how this album became a cornerstone of 70s rock and how it began to cement Steely Dan's place in the Rock and Roll pantheon. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? Yes Would this release make my personal list? strong candidate Will I be listening to it again? for sure
Previously rated: Pretzel Logic (4/5) ***************************** Do It Again, Dirty Work, and Reelin' In The Years make it a 5/5. The other songs are pretty good too.
I've never consciously listened to Steely Dan (though I recognized a song or two), but I had an absolute blast with this one - it's great songs with great arrangements, a hint of Jazz, smooth and catchy. I kept listening to it all day.
Not a bad song in here, and some huge hits as well? Easy 5/5. Easy listening but there are some sneakily sophisticated parts too.
I love the term “audiophile” which simply means lover of sounds. In that sense, every single person who loves music would qualify as an audiophile so I wholeheartedly claim it, but not the modern meme it’s become as an ossified dig at old guys who love “audiophile” pressings of Steely Dan and other 70s music, often aligned with expensive “audiophile” pressings and often spewed to make fun of “yacht rock.” Yes there’s some truth here, but really I love me some Steely Dan, and it’s amazing music so sure, I prefer to listen to it in one of the recognized best versions to hear the music. We chase for it because when you hear a really good version, this is one of the best produced and enjoyable listens around because these guys were literal demanding nutcases with the amount of attention to detail they dedicated to the production of their albums, this one being one of their best. It deserves it too; there’s so much…lushness in their music that in a good version, there’s new stuff that jumps out in the mix. That, and the amazing and unique songwriting, interesting characters, this is an easy classic, for sure.
It's so good, incredibly well-crafted. The hits are extremely memorable, they sure know how to write a catchy hook. There are no weak tracks. Record isn't too long or too short. Standouts are the aforementioned hits "Do It Again", "Dirty Work", and one of my all-time faves "Reelin' In The Years".
'can't buy a thrill' is an interesting first step for steely dan. of course you have the two big hits on here, which are great, but you can see the more humble beginnings at play here, with some hints of the future. i would say this album feels less unabashedly jazzy than their follow-ups would. it's still jazzy to a point, but it feels more like an early 70s rock album with some tastes of jazz. i don't think there's a truly bad track on here (minus the closer, "turn that heartbeat over again" - a song that i legitimately did not remember being on this album at all, it's that forgettable). some of the album cuts i love on here are 'dirty work,' 'kings,' midnite cruiser,' and 'brooklyn (owes the charmer under me).' just a really solid album and a great debut from one of the 1970s premiere bands.
Saw this morning that my album was Can't buy a thrill. I brew a pot coffee, lounged in the couch, put the record on and got to 7th heaven. Damned, I'm not in my late fourties, why do I like this?
Banger after banger! It was over before I even noticed
a classic no notes
Great
This is my 4th 5 star rating in a row! All these albums are so good including this one!
Steely Dan was one of those bands I knew the name of but couldn't tell you what their music was. Listening to this I do now kind of remember my dad playing this for me when I was younger. Particularly "Reelin' In the Years". This album has a great opening, it sucked me right in. "Dirty Work" is probably my favorite but I really love most of this album. It's smooth, chill, and catchy. I understand this is considered "yacht rock" which I think is considered uncool but, who cares? I'm not sure about the genre as a whole, but this album I love.
Love this band. It's cool that they had pretty much found their style and stuck with it already from the get go.
Great stuff
I’m so biased when it comes to this album. Steely Dan is one of my favorite bands, and this is possibly my favorite album of all time. For a debut album, it is insanely good and possibly the best album the band has ever made. There is not one weak track on the album. Everything is a standout. It’s also so different from almost everything that was out at the time. Production is great. Sound is unique. Musically and lyrically a standout. “Dirty Work” into “Kings” into “Midnight Cruiser” is such a great creative punch. I could go on and on about this album, but I’ll shut up now and give it the 5 stars it deserves.
Despite being a massive fan of Gaucho (one of my favourite LP's ever), I've never actually ventured much further into Steely Dan's discog. I've obviously listened to Do It Again, and Reelin' in the Years, and Dirty Work - but songs like Kings, Midnite Cruiser, Only A Fool, etc. all held up so well. Honestly, this album is so solid every single song on it could handle itself as a single. This album is flawless. Probably my favourite album on this generator so far.
5 out of 5. Full bias here but nearly every track on this album is amazing and no skips on repeat listens.
WARNING: This album will complete your metamorphosis into being a middle aged man. I could feel my hairline regressing to around a Norwood 5 by the time 'Reelin in the years' had come on. No wonder I'm more interested in watching sports these days. This Album really has it all, a wonderful track selection with not a single dull track, a groovy vibe, people getting cucked in the lyrics. Hell even the cover art looks like some shit you would see painted on the side of the rides at some shitty fairground (next to some weird painting of Elvis singing a duet with The Incredible Hulk or something). I had only heard maybe 1 or 2 songs on this album beforehand and was surprised at how one of those didn't even cut it for my favourites of this album. Highlights Do it Again, Midnite Cruiser, Reelin in the Years, Change of the Guard
I think I've become an old man now but this is great
Superb album. I adored the instrumentals. Vocals and lyrics were great overall. Didn't enjoy Brooklyn or Turn That Heartbeat Over Again as much as the rest of the album but these were still pretty good on their own. So many bangers on this album
So, my younger brother, back in the '90s, started listening to these guys, and I recall the "rock" stations playing The Dan with high frequency... and I didn't like it a bit. I'd even go so far to say that I hated it. I was dreading the day that The Dan would pop up, and I would have to "force" myself to sit through an entire album... Damnit... 4* Would have been 5*, however, one needs to make distinction—this is future me making a distinction… 5*
For the longest time I thought he said man who stole your wallet. This is real smoking inside the house on a leather couch music. The guitar work in do it again is so fucking TIGHT man god damn. I have spent so much time drunkenly singing this. Really humanises tony soprano. Possibly one of the best songs about cucking somebody. The other side of the coin to mister bright side. I think this is the most underrated song on the album and my personal favourite. Really big fan of the vocal harmonies on this one. Another drunken classic. Midnite cruiser aka the drunk driving song. Many lamp posts narrowly missed trying to light a cigarette while driving around with the headlights off to this song. Instrumentally every song on this album is perfect. Must acquire white stetson hat…. Reelin in the years is the first steely Dan song I ever heard and it really embodies the general vibe of their music as dadcore midlife crisis music which is wild considering this album came out when my own dad was maybe 9. Fire in the hole is the worst song on this album and it’s still serviceable as a track which really demonstrates how fucking good this album is. Now is he talking about Brooklyn the location or Brooklyn being the name of a person. Overall good ass album and anthem of scumbags everywhere. Just personal preference but it’s a little front loaded with bangers
I'd never actually intentionally listened to Steely Dan, I'd involuntarily heard them on videogame Soundtracks, film and TV Soundtracks, in Markos car ect. But this is the first time I've sat my ass down and LISTENED. I thought I was gonna be a cynic, that it was gonna sound dated, kinda old and mildewy. Some albums from this era take a little bit to get the feel for. To catch what makes them so great, Paul McCartney's "Ram" for instance. This isn't like that at all. Every song is immediately, Jazzy or filled with soft rock joy that doesn't feel stale at all. Instead, fresh and original. Which might sound completely retarded but if this came out today I feel like it would still be a hit. Genuinely feels impossible not to be. 10/10 Fav tracks - All of 'em Least Fav - Perfect Album Particular highlights imo are Dirty Work, Kings and Midnight Cruiser
Very few albums have an opener as strong as Do It Again not only in terms of its qualities as a standalone tune but also as an introduction into the mood and themes of Can't Buy A Thrill (and Steely Dan's broader work as a whole). As a side note this might be one of the worst songs to pick on karaoke night as you have to just stand there for 3 minutes while Jeff Baxter and Don Fagen fuck up the guitar and piano in one of the best instrumental bridges of all time (speaking from personal experience). Dirty Work is a beautiful tune about being an absolute scumbag, a musical niche that Steely Dan will come to perfect if they haven't already with this song. Kings is probably the weakest song on Side A but basically every song on this album is phenomenal. Excellent piano work, a catchy chorus and more beautiful guitar work from Baxter. Midnite Cruiser is an anthem for deadbeats and burnouts, this is one to put on driving three times over the limit. The musical manifestation of a mid-life crisis, later to be dethroned by Hey Nineteen on the Gaucho album. Only a Fool Would Say That is a solid end to Side A and a song I find myself returning to way more than I should. Reelin' In The Years opens with a killer guitar track and does not let up throughout the entire song. Fagen and Becker's bitter lyrics persist on what is probably the most mean spirited song on this album seeing as it's basically a big 'fuck you' to an ex-girlfriend. Fire In The Hole is a janky, off-kilter song and I absolutely love it, every time I hear it I want to go on marketplace and buy a piano and learn to play. Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me) is probably my favourite song on this album. Instrumentally, the slide guitar after the chorus just does it for me and the vocals are just perfect. The line 'a piece of island cooling in the sea' is the peak of this album that I look forward to each time I listen to it. Change of the Guard is the weakest song on the whole album in my opinion but it's still an absolute banger by any metric. Turn That Heartbeat Over Again Palmer, Fagen and Becker come together for the last song on the album and it's a sweet-sounding song about sticking up a liquor store. A perfect ending to one of my favourite albums of all time. On a side note, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen would later write that their fifth album, The Royal Scam, had "the most hideous album cover of the seventies, bar none (excepting perhaps Can't Buy a Thrill)."
a tad bit cheesy but very pleasant - I enjoy easy chill dad rock
Endless replay value. No bad tracks. Yep, this is peak.
Best Song: Dirty Work Worst Song: Brooklyn
Amazing debut album, such a great sound, amazing guitar work. Every song works.
This came up as my album of the day on a ride to the beach, and man, I might not be able to buy a thrill, but I sure can buy every Dan record ever recorded
I am a huge Steely Dan fan. That bias aside, this is an exceptional debut album. This ushered in a unique style that has never been duplicated. Perfection!
What a debut album, I loved listening to this Top tracks: Do It Again, Dirty Work, Only A Fool Would Say That, Reelin’ In The Years
4.5 but I'm definitely rounding this one up.
Absolutely love this album. I have some very fond memories of listening to this album in my dad's car growing up so it has a special place in my heart. Played Reelin' in the Years at his funeral. Easy 5 star.
Great album!
What a perfect album. Relaxing summers, the open road, good times with great friends, this hits it all.
Really quite good, for a band named after a dildo.
Pretty much flawless. I didn’t expect myself to be a fan of Steely Dan but they are just so good at what they do
heater
Banger
Every song of this is an actual heater and a classic. Every time a song switches I’m delighted at getting to listen to another masterfully assembled pop song, until the album ends and I’m left wanting more Dan!
so far it's better than the last Steely Dan album on this list. liking this one a lot. added a ton to my playlist. recognized a decent amount of the songs.
Just wonderful
This album absolutely rips. I will admit I feel hesitant to give Steely Dan their SECOND five (would be my first artist to do this). But I fully expect that to happen to at least a few other artists. So I'm NOT SURE. But it really is such a consistent, solid record, from the popular singles being absolute rippers in their own right, to the lesser known songs. There isn't one snoozer on this album. Fuck it - it gets a 5!
a definite dad rock album. I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed it though. Very understated instruments with some lovely guitar solos.
yeah this was great actually, glad to see what all the fuss was about. Favourite song: Reelin' In The Years
Very misleading album name because you absolutely can buy a thrill, such as this very album! Great from the start, and an amazing beginning to the band.
Steely Dan is a musicians band. It took me ages to appreciate them because I grew up wanted my rock music heavy and theatrical but the community of musicians that gathered around Steely Dan - a kind of artistic slime mold - were and are some of the best and most gifted studio musicians of all time. Only musicians of this quality could render Becker and Fagan’s vision perfectly. Let the boys take care of the long side eye lyrics and give over the real music making to the best in the business who could carry the snide lyrics on grooves of impeccable quality. This isn’t the best Steely Dan album by a long shot. And it’s still a pure five out of five. Listen carefully to it. Not a single note out of place, constant turns of phrase and musically ideas floating in the interregnum between jazz and rock without becoming a fusion reduction. Its amazing to think that from HERE they only got better at every aspect of recording and songwriting.
4.75 stars daaaang this album is good. I can see how it out Steely Dan on the map. Songs are super catchy and well produced. "Do It Again" is such a classic. "Only a Fool" sounds especially nice. "Change of the Guard" has a rocking guitar solo. There are songs on here that suffer from the writing style of "what the HELL are these guys talking about?" but there are other simpler songs that are less perplexing
Not a bad song on the album really. Completely classic Dan. I am a middle-aged dad, I say so. This album cover is very bizarre though. Not a fan.
PERFECTION
I was prepared to not like this album, due to me being exposed to the Steely Dan slander so commonly found in pop culture. This album rules though and it's hard to deny once you actually give them a chance. I had to listen to it again right after it ended because it was that good.
Impossible not to be in a good mood after this one
9/10. Great album. Toed the line for a 10 but not quite enough “wow” factor. Great songs throughout though. About even with Pretzel Logic.
I love this whole album, but haven't listened to it in years, so I really should click "did not listen" but I'm giving it a five based on pure memory and so I can reveal the next album, which better not be Joni Mitchell.
One of my favorite records by one of my favorite groups. I think I have owned this recording in 8-track, cassette, LP, and CD. I do have a reel-to-reel player, maybe I should track down a copy in that format.
meirl
Ben een beetje vies van het aantal hitjes
This is a helluva debut album. Three solid hits. I’ve come to appreciate Steely more as I was reelin’ in the years.
Loved it, quite a few favorites on here. Just so easy to listen to.
My experience listening to this was “Oh, Steely Dan made that song? wow” “Oh what? Steely Dan made this song? nice”
How can one band make so many perfect albums? It seems impossible. And yet, here's another one.
The most underrated album by my favourite band.
Steely Dan is the man
God I love Steely Dan. Sardonic lyrics, incredible playing, just masterful
One of my favorite full albums of all time. I listened to this endlessly when younger and it was nice to revisit the entire album.
Oh my god I absolutely love this. It just makes me want to get up and dance my ass off. It's so energetic and funky in the best way possible, and I adore the hint of Latin influences in some of the songs, absolutely incredible stuff.
One of the best albums I've ever heard.
Multiple top-tier bangers on this one. This was Steely Dan when they were an actual band vs. a duo+. This album is 5 stars all day, every day.
Steely Dan can be polarizing but I am a sucker for their catalog and this one is one of their more solid albums.
One mediocre song from perfection. The coolest music around. Take Heartbeat off and it'd top every list. Incredible soft rock album. There are 4 songs on here in contention for my all time favorites list. I wish I could speak more effectively my love for this record, but it kind of speaks for itself. It chases and perfects a vibe.
Love Steely Dan <3 I'm a dad I guess and this album has all the bangers
4.5
Classic
DISCAZO
Pretty sure everything Steely Dan put out was perfect. This one deserves a 5 on production alone
loved it
Very nostalgic
What a hell of a debut album. It's gold top to bottom. I don't love how produced Steely Dan got later in their career (although Aja is phenomenal) but this is just stunning work from a group of crazy skilled people.
Really good songs on this album. Reelin' in the years, do it again, love them!
Very nice classic rock album! Do It Again is a hit!
Outstanding!
Honestly pretty listenable. I even (gasp) liked some songs. Gave like ABBA vibes a lil.
Favourite tracks: do it again; dirty work; reeling in the years; fire in the hole; change of the guard; midnight cruiser; only a fool would say that
This is so good.
Love this. No idea why they have a reputation for being hated by women. It's groovy :)
Steely Dan vika, alltaf jafn ánægjulegt.
So many classics on this album
Got my copy of the shelf.
Najbolje pjesme: 1. Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me) 2. Do It Again 3. Change Of The Guard 4. Midnite Cruiser 5. Dirty Work Sve su dobre zapravo.
Favourite song - Only a fool would say that
I hate Steely Dan. If they want my 5 stars they have to come claim them with their slick, guitar playing hands. If they want my 5 stars they have to come into my headphones and show off a crisp recording style. There's no way they're coming at me with clever lyrics and catchy tunes. There's no way Steely Dan is catching me grooving along and getting these 5 stars. If Steely Dan wants my 5 stars, they have to come into my bedroom and kiss me. And do it sensually too. None of this quick and dirty business. They have to... have to... Damn it. Take your 5 stars. This is the biggest surprise of my musical experience. I have dismissed this album, unheard, my entire life and it's a masterpiece.
Such a good album. I love the vocals and all of the harmonies, and the melodies are fun. That's two Steely Dan albums I love.
