Reviews (page 11 of 14)
From the late meatloaf comes a rock opera all about teenage hormones and bad decisions. A classic that's starting to show its age.
Well I know ONE song from Meatloaf lol and it's not on this album. It will be an interesting listen. I get a musical movie type vibe so far. Especially track 2 sounds like a play. Reminds me of Grease.
What I like about Meat Loaf is the epic love ballads. What I don't like about Meat Loaf is the epic love ballads. My mum and dad were big into Meat Loaf, a product of their generation. So I'm quite familiar with these songs. From this listening session I'll say my favourite is Paradise By the Dashboard Light.
Pretty decent overall.
I recall a friend of mine listening to this a lot back in the '90s. I didn't get it. I didn't dislike it, but I didn't think it was great either. Reading about how hard it was to get anyone willing to produce it and the initial lackluster reaction in America, and after a re-listen, I still feel that my 1990s opinion is correct. It is better than I recalled (esp. "Bat out of Hell"), but it's still just "good but not great". I would attribute its album sales to falling in the "least common denominator" category -- it appeals to a lot of people, yet few of them would actually give it five stars. Some will, but most won't. I'm giving it 3.5 and rounding down for all the (over)hype.
Massivly kitch and OTT operatic rock that is hard to take seriously but sold by the truckload through the 70s/80s/blouarara. Its like a stage musical (and that's where it ended up) 2.75
The record has some good hits but the theatrical instrumentation is not my type. Nevertheless I enjoyed it a lot.
I get why people like this but it doesn't do much for me.
I was never a meatloaf fan, but I gotta say actually listening to the entire album wasn’t really that bad.
è un tenacious d ante litteram?
Paradise by the Dashboard Light is timeless with Ellen Foley's singing that's dripping with sexuality as the baseball play by play builds to a crescendo. Holy cow I think he's gonna make it! Brings back memories of summer nights and the 1972 Scamp. I thought I knew the album but didn't know that Todd Rundgren produced it, Edgar Winter plays sax, the baseball play-by-play was done by a longtime Yankees announcer (and shortstop) and that the drummer and pianist from the E Street band played on the album. The Springsteen-like rolling piano licks around two minutes into the album make a lot more sense. There is no doubt that Meatloaf can sing. He has a powerful voice and excellent range. Ditto Ellen Foley for her performance on Paradise. But aside from Paradise, this album doesn't have the excitement level I thought it had back in the day.
When Boston's debut album arrived the other day, I was charitable in my review because it was a guilty pleasure back in the day. I was hoping this album would also bring me back to my more innocent formative years as it was released around the same time in the late 70s when I was going to high school and these two albums were all the rage. Unfortunately this one hasn't aged well and its dragged down by its cheesy cliche'd writing. This is basically Bruce Springsteen for the Broadway Musical crowd. I must admit though that when singer Ellen Foley yells "Stop right there!" at the 4:25 mark of Paradise by the dashboard light its an iconic rock moment.
Starts really well but gets a bit samey
The album's namesake and Paradise by the Dashboard Light are definite high points. Could take or leave the rest though.
Pretty good
This album is good, but I don't love all of it. Is that fair to say?
Objectively this is a really good album, but I just have never really been into Meatloaf. It just feels too... manufactured maybe?
Pretty, pretty, pretty good.
Such a short album I didn’t even register when it moved to Elton John in the playlist .
This is so over the top melodramatic, I kind of can't help but like it. I was surprised to hear what sounded like influences for Hedwig and the Angry Inch in this record. Apparently this is adapted from a rock-and-roll musical interpretation of Peter Pan; well now I'm going to have to go back and listen again and pay more attention to the lyrics.
Good but not quite a 4 for me. 3.5.
Very theatrical! A little too much for me but I respect it. 3/5 for me. Cool but not my taste.
The album cover does not match the sound at all. Not really my cup of tea but I gotta appreciate how awesome of a rock ballad / rock opera this is.
Flipping through my uncle’s old records when I was a kid, I used to think this album was hardcore and way more metal because of the cover. But then we played it one day and it’s actually a super cornball melodramatic rock opera of sorts instead. Surprise! Meat Loaf can belt it out like no other, but this hasn’t aged very well thematically. Paradise by the Dashboard Light is the tired and clichéd old “ugh women amiright?” joke that is so played out now. There’s nothing remarkable here, but I can see why it appealed to so many people, classic rock staple and all that.
MEATLOAF
Overall an energetic album that doesn't overstay it's welcome. However, three ballads it's probably more than needed in a record like this.
Ok, I’ve got to give it up to him. This was much more enjoyable than expected. I found myself grooving to every song!
One of my least favourite things an artist can do in music is have the first song of the album drastically better than everything else on the album making you expect a fun album full of crazy guitar and piano solos (this happens to some extent but not even half as good as the first song). Jim's voice starts to get annoying by the second song and this album starts going in a more country orientated direction which I am not a fan of. Overall 7/10, realistically never going to listen or even think about this album again unless I hear the title track in my playlist in which case I will thoroughly enjoy that 9 minutes and 50 seconds
Bem bom
I was totally wrong and prejudiced about Meat Loaf. This album is melodic, like a rock opera. Absolutely enjoyable.
It's so over the top and theatrical that i can't hate it, not a lot of people could have made an album like this and commit as hard as this man did, but sometimes it's a little too much for me.
Decent
Never knew it was THAT popular in the UK and New Zealand. A good album with a narrative feel and of course, Meatloaf. For whatever reason I associate a lot of these songs with wedding receptions. Probably reflects the kinds of wedding bashes that I get invited to.
Decent
Paradise By The Dashboard Light
Pretty good album, good energy
Overall pretty solid album. Recognized a few popular songs. Definitely liked the first half better except for the weird skit at the start of track 2. Closing track was pretty as well. 7/10
3.5 stars
Quite a performer
Mixed feelings about this one. Probably heard some songs, in particular Paradise, far too often, and I don't like the bombastic approach. But at the same time there are some really strong tracks here. So 3 it is.
Grew up listening to this album from my dad's CD collection, so this gives me fond memories, but I don't really like music anymore.
Oh, what fun!
friend, just admit it when this stuff hits it hits good hot n impulsive
You have to take it for what it is, a fun an flashy album yhat doesn't take itself seriously. The title track is the most over the top of the album and by far the best one. There are some other good moments on it too but honestly we're here for that bombastic rock opera schtick
Classic pop rock. Love the kitcsh - you'll like to sang in a karaoke !
3.4 - Once in a while it's fun to walk into an unassuming dive bar on a Friday night to find it unexpectedly teeming with students from the college nearby. Invariably the bar owner has fired up the karaoke machine, and a rowdy group of young women dressed in tight jeans and tall boots are singing "Paradise By the Dashboard Light." That's the (only) correct context for this record as far as I'm concerned.
Aardig pop-album. Vooral het nummer "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" is geweldig. De rest echter gemiddeld, waaronder het kapot gedraaide "Paradise By The Dashboard Light". ***
First track was super emotional and i liked it a lot, but the rest of the album tired me and i lost interest
Maybe I'll just never get it...
T3B 1. Bat Out of Hell 2. Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad 3. You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth
Two out of three ain't bad was s huge song when it came out. I never bought the album and I knew Paradise. Paradise is a fun song you just have to go with it. But I think meatloaf had one of the most underrated voices in rock
Good, great opening song and I liked the closing one. Album Cover: 5/5 very cool
This was a hard one for me. When it's working, it's amazing. But I get so bored during the ballads.
Meatloaf is cheesy. But it works, somehow. It's not great, it's not bad, I don't hate it, I don't love it. The songs may be a little long for me.
It's growing on me. Completely ridiculous and bombastic, but done with a proper sincerity rather than a smug ironic detachment which saves it imo. Catchy as hell, and pretty enjoyable for what it is. Also finding out it released in 77, rather than the 80s as I had assumed lends the album an air of originality, almost as a model for the arena rock of the 80s.
Ja ne znam zašto, but I dig that album cover.
At least one understands the bombast and sheer over-the-topness right out of the gate, from the first screeching notes of the eponymous opener. One always felt a bit sorry for Meat Loaf, his clownishness and obvious need for adoration (occupational hazard for actors, alas). Certainly he could sing, but was it necessary to oversing every f’ing note or for every song to be operatic? That the playing is overwrought may be stylistically consistent, but makes for an exhausting listening experience. There are Mahler symphonies that take a lighter touch than “For Crying Out Loud,” the mawkishenss-on-steroids closer. One blames Steinman, obviously, with TR as an accomplice. Neither were fluent in understatement or subtlety. There is broad appeal – “Two Out of Three” straight up works and “Paradise” is unforgettable (both in the positive and pejorative senses) with the Rizzuto clips approaching performance art –but, per usual, one finds broad appeal to be more bug than feature. Plus, the incessant and near-desperate overreaching for the audience is cringe-making – utterly undignified and approaching outright groveling at times. Meat Loaf seems to fall roughly between a roadside attraction and a novelty act, more than a one-hit wonder, but not much more, which feels about right, karmically speaking, in the grand scheme.
hard to approach this with fresh ears, given the ubiquity of Bat out of Hell. To me it is caught between not being heavy enough for hard rock, not complex enough for prog rock and too over-elaborate for rock n roll. Good but not a classic for me
Proof that being over the top can be a virtue when done in such a blatantly exaggerated way. Alas, the record is marred by side B taking itself rather too seriously and, thus, being rather boring.
This album is too melodramatic for my tastes. While that might be appealing to some people, it is not appealing to me. Despite that, the vocal performance is incredible and the production is solid as well. Standout song is Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.
This the rock opera. They couldn’t make us slaves
Not my favorite. Bay out of Hell is best
Rock ballads, dramatic and artsy, glad I listened to it as I knew Meat Loaf by name but not by sound.
Oh man, I'm so glad I listened to this album. I guess I've never really understood what Meat Loaf's style was (with "I’d Do Anything for Love" as my only reference). I can't say it's my thing..I'm still not a fan of the ballads, but now I can say I get it. I think it's really cool, like Broadway meets rippin' guitars. The title track was the standout song for me.
Don't know where the review for this one went but remember saying (the song) bat out of hell was brilliant and the rest of the album couldn't keep up.
Great saxophone in All Revved Up. Funks up by Paradise.
A classic. My mum used to do the hoovering to this album.
what a weird album 😄 not likely to revisit, but fun
When I was 8, I would have given it 5 stars. Of course back then, I also enjoyed eating a spoonful of Tang out of the jar. When I was 15, I would have given it 7 stars. With hindsight, it's clear that this is the peak of 70s excesses. Each song is 50% to 100% longer than it should be. It's bloated, overwrought ... and still fun. His name is Robert Paulson.
I enjoyed listening to this more than I expected to. It was probably the first time I listened to the whole thing, though I've certainly heard many of these songs before. I mean, it is what it is and it's kind of fun and over the top and if any of these songs ever come on the radio or a shuffle I won't necessarily turn it off. It's also not really my jam, but it was fun to hear for nostalgic reasons, I guess. Good production and the dude can certainly sing. hard to know how to rate it, so i'll go right down the middle
If you name your album "Bat out of Hell", then put a naked Fabio on a flying motorcycle decorated with a dead horse head, bursting out of a haunted cemetery, you're not going for subtlety, and your music better reflect that. Luckily, from the opening moment to the final note, the music here goes aptly balls to the wall. No compromises and no disappointments. Best song is the epic Paradise by the Dashboard Light suite
I’m not typically a fan of the Rock Opera, but this of course has some fun nostalgia linked to it.
Respect how this album really goes for it - and how Meat Loaf really goes for it, in general. It's unfortunately the kind of thing that's been diluted because my general exposure to it was probably in supermarkets, echoing through the dairy isle dodging other customers with the shopping cart. But I did enjoy the listen.
Kind of knew what to expect here.
3.25
Very cheesy, ballad-y Rock n roll. Reminds me of a musical. Not my jam particularly but I can see why it's popular with those who enjoy this kind of music
Operatic, theatrical, absurd but fun.
Interesting album, with different styles combined.
3⭐️ out of 5 ain’t bad
It’s ok. I’ve heard this album a few times over the years and the individual songs too many times. I even saw Meatloaf live once. Too much of a gimmick or something for me.
Meh its ok
Kind of dated, kind of dumb, kind of cliché... but also kind of fun. Kept my attention for longer than I thought it would. The title track is a proper banger, so is "Paradise by the Dashboard Light". Not a fan of the last track, which always sucks, because it leaves you with a sour taste even if the rest of the album was great. Has some lows, has some highs, probably wouldn't listen to the entire thing again, a 3/5.
Love the title track, diminishing returns on other power ballads, but generally good.
Solid cheesy fun album.
A revving Harley of operatic rock purrs at the heart of this 1977 epic. Yes, it proved to be the career catapult for Meat Loaf’s brand of piano-hammering emotion, but its highlights—from the overblown 9-minute onslaught of the title track onwards—are as much the work of lead composer Jim Steinman. “Heaven Can Wait” plays like a twisted hymn and “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” turns power baladeering into a blustering art form.
It was ok. Enjoyed it more than I thought. Meatloaf’s piano playing and comp was good, not sure how much I would listen to it again
Kind of silly and over the top. I was expecting more from such an iconic album.
Not a big Hard Rock fan and I have always had prejudice against Meat Loaf because of the name. But I do have to admit that this is a pretty good album. More melodic than I expected it to be. Rest In Peace Meat Loaf!
i actually enjoyed this album! i recognized a little bit of the tunes but not amazingly, but i thought it was a nice combination of music and voice mixed together. it was good!
Completely absurd. Well, isn't it? That's not to say it's terrible - it's just absurd; knowingly-so. It's fun and campy and theatrical and overwrought but I do think we need music like this on occasion. I don't think I'd listened to this album since i was 8 years old at my cousin's house on cassette tape. Of course like everyone in my generation I grew up hearing the 3 big hits pretty often and as a baseball fan loved the Phil Rizzuto monologue in "Paradise..." (even if i hated the Yankees). (...only struck me now that there's no small similarity between the vocal stylings of Meatloaf and Jack Black...) It's a bit much to listen to on repeat for me but probably a required listen to gain any understanding of the culture/music scene of the late 70s in america. It's a fun spin. 7/10 3 stars.
Cornier than a cob of corn. Some huge hits to be found here, but it just ain't for me.
No johan on oopperaa hitto vie!
This album was definitely all over the place stylistically but I was there for it! It's an interesting mix of Americana, ballads and what I'm calling "zany rock n roll"
Some extra credit has to be allowed for the audacity of putting out what is basically a musical without a plot, in the packaging of a heavy metal album. I don’t think I ever listened to the album before and certainly none of it was familiar other than Paradise... which is a superbly constructed song for all the ultra-banality of its concept (and even in that deserves a nod for the underlying cold-blooded assessment of the actual beating heart of most teenage love songs). Obviously a core artifact of its pop era, though considered on its own as an album I’d have to say that it barely stays ahead of its many weaknesses.
There’s something charming about this musical theater type rock opera, but for me personally it is too loud, dramatic, and intense for much replay value. Certainly a fun album but not much else for me.
The rest of the album is a bit hit or miss for me, but my god that title track is still as amazing as ever. RIP to a real one
This one is difficult. On one hand, this may be the best album cover of all time. On the other, the music is NO way reflects the amazing album cover. It's a great operatic pop "rock" album, and I recognize it's greatness, but it has ZERO re-listenability to me. I'm glad I listened to it, and I think it's good, but I have no desire to ever listen to it again. For that, it's a 3/5, but I totally get why people love it. That being said, Meat Loaf could SING. Great chops.
Obviously it's iconic, but just not my thing- it's more musical than metal. Fully get why people love it, just not for me.
It is good fun, some great tracks. The spoken word sections are cringey though, the paradise song was especially cringey
I’m not in the mood for meat loaf. Lol. I get it. It’s like showtunes. The album art is too bad ass for how upbeat and peppy this sounds.
3/5 better than expected!
Big, fat covid denying, anti-vaxx idiot makes big fat, over the top idiotic album. Even Springsteen thinks this album is a tad OTT. Aspects of it are cringe and the kind of stuff neckbeards probably think are romantic but I've got to admit, you can get swept up in it. Ignore the man and listen to the music - it's the least we could do. Best Tracks: Bat Out of Hell; You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth; Paradise By The Dashboard Light
This is the debut album from Meat Loaf and it released as the title suggests - like a 'Bat Out of Hell'. This album is one of the best-selling in the world and is certified 14 times platinum - which means it's certified diamond. However, this album was not an immediate hit in the US and took some time to gain popularity. This album is still quite popular, especially after a play was created with some of these songs as parts in the play. This epic, rock, pop, gothic, artistic album was a treat to listen to and definitely belongs on this list. Everything came together perfectly for this album.
Meh...
An album with songs that are nice when they come up on the radio, and Two Out of Three Ain't Bad takes me back to high school years, but not more than that.
Oh boy, I know this album well and while I'm not a fan of Meatloaf, I do love the occasional song. A whole album is tough to listen to though.
Two meats out of loaf ain't bad
Rocky horror vibes
sounds massively like Jack Black - bombastically daft
Great Fun
Eh, Meat Loaf is another person that's never been very high on my list, despite his amazing comeback in the 1990s. This album is OK, but not better than that. 3 stars.
Fun, but just not a need to listen to again.
Great album. Fast paced.
If you had never heard of meat loaf before and you looked at this album cover you would have a very specific idea of what you think this album would sound like, and then you would be very surprised when you listen to it and it’s billy joel if he were a theater kid that got bullied a lot in high school
Childhood
Demasiado largo. Un 3, por pesao. Tiene dos megahits: -I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That): NO me gusta -Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through: SÍ me gusta
32. Bat out of Hell - Meat Loaf 9 tracks. Not at all what I was expecting. Far more power ballad than punchy rock as the title track suggests & I have absolutely no idea what Paradise by Dashboard Light is, (other than brilliant!) 3/5.
Quite! Soft rock musical music at its pinnacle. Just not what I’d choose to listen to!
Solid metal, good vibes
interesting 3.5/5
It's alright, I wouldn't do anything to listen to this album... but maybe I would for love
Ok
A classic album, seems a little long in the tooth now
Rock Opera ?? Very kitsch, but fun. Funny that Meatloaf often gets classified as rock or hard rock or something, but really its big musical ballads, almost like musical theatre. Lots of songs in there that you'd dance at a wedding to with your auntie !!! Gotta say, "You took the words right out of my mouth" is super catchy. High 3 - not really my cup of tea, don't think I'd listen again, but it was fun, and unique and memorable.
Inledningsspåret Bat Out of Hell är bra. Även Paradise by the Dashboard Light, speciellt del 3, Let Me Sleep on It, där Ellen Foleys sånginsats måste nämnas! Bästa låt: For Crying Out Loud.
Starts out gloriously with a monstrous 10 minute track, then things get weird for a sec before again building up to a powerful crescendo in “You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth”. “Heaven Can Wait” starts out on a more mellow pace which blossoms into an actually beautiful piano balled. The next song revs up the energy again and that same energy continues throughout the rest of the album. Powerful and dynamic listen, but some tracks grow a little too long and overstay their welcome… 6/10
Average indie
Good
Theatric rock
This will not be for everyone but overall it was enjoyable.
3,5 Album was gekend. Paradise by the dashboard light, goated. Ik vond wel niet dat de lengte van de nummers een meerwaarde was, to long is to long, liever iets korter
It's a classic, but not my everyday style. Fun every now and then
NICE ALBUM ART. interesting start i could like this. we're starting with the title track lets go baybe. 9 minutes 50 seconds this could be amazing or a drag. loving it so far. okay his voice is okay. lyrics went from fun to funny fast lol. im enjoying myself kinda though. this screams musical theatre i can easily picture the performance to go along with this song. second song: xd oh my god. "will you offer your throat to the wolf with the red rose". this is what a concept album is right. well im done, i think i liked this as much as i can like this type of album, the drama of it all was nice for a change. last 2 tracks are live versions and theyre not available but i rarely care about listening to the same song twice in the same album so im good
Decent album, some good piano and guitar stuff
This is probably the most egregious case of an album cover being far better than the music presented. You look at this cover and say “HOLY SHIT, THIS ALBUMS GONNA MAKE BLACK SABBATH LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF PUSSIES” then you listen to the music and hear it’s a sappy musical. On the musical side, it’s not awful, it has some great moments and feels kind of ambitious for what it is. The issue is that it just doesn’t have something to hook me in. I’d be reminisced to not mention the legendary moments where Top Gear (the good version) toon the piss out of the title track.
Guilty admission... singing meatloaf loudly like a Broadway showtune is a long time habit for which I’m seeing a specialist. It was never the same for me after his role in Fight Club. And this album doesn’t hold up well despite Paradise.
Fun classic rock vibes after its "normalization in the latter part of the 20th century, bundled up in the kitschy package that makes it easy to listen too. This was fun for some nostalgic vibes, reminds me a lot of the music in Rocky Horror Picture sow.
Enjoyed this more than I should.
Some fun tunes but feels like it takes itself too seriously at times in thinking it's an operatic masterpiece, the ballads especially. Top artwork, though. Best track: Bat out of Hell
Incredible artwork and Bat out of Hell is and epic song and the live version at the end of the album is even better. But apart from this the other tracks don't really measure up in comparison.
hi name is robert paulson. cracking set of badongas. this is what all of that 70s crap we've had to endure is trying to do. unashamedly cheesey, it knows its not serious which makes it mildly enjoyable.
It's meatloaf, it's old lady rock
A guilty pleasure. Very catchy and liked the pianos but did take itself too seriously at times.
Production: 12/20 Songwriting: 8/20 Innovation: 10/20 Bangers: 10/20 Emotional response: 8/20 =48 I don't really have much of an opinion about it. It is what it is.
extremely corny and felt very long. Has some fun parts tho. 6
not a fan, but it's not bad 3/5
This is so lame but I actually kind of appreciate that.
Beasty 3.33
I mostly enjoyed this album, minus the talking part at the beginning of the second track. It's not really my vibe so I don't think I'll ever listen again, but I enjoyed listening to it!
A little more my speed. I knew a few of the songs but it was not an album I had listened to all the way through. Very dramatic and like a musical. Reminded me of rocky horror picture show.
Really really boring
Surprisingly good!
Decepcionantemente blando. Melódico.
Cornball from start to finish, but Paradise by the Dashboard Light is so ridiculous, it alone brought this up to a 3.
I don't especially like it, but I'm glad this album exists. It's a very bold album with big ambitions and it's unabashedly theatrical, and I appreciate its sincerity. It's just that in spite of all that, it doesn't try to *do* anything and doesn't really go anywhere or explore any interesting ideas. Combine the uninspired and cliched lyrics with mediocre melodies, and you get a 3/5 album.
Interesting reading on the wikipedia page that a lot of people compare this to Springsteen Born to Run. I wouldn't have thought that before, but I can definitely hear that. The difference is that Springsteen's music is more raw and nuanced. Meat Loaf comes across as sort of frantic and over-produced. Still an interesting and very listenable album though. 3 stars.
Hell of a ride! lots of instrumental magic not without progressive elements and slight glammy lipstick sputtering. lots of coquettish vocals, Michael's voice was maybe superior discovery for me, definitely captivating and talanted. Great choice for a highway rapid ride on. btw ballads are a bit tedious track picks- S/T, you took two words, all revved, paradise by dashboard light
album was good but the guy being called meat loaf brought it down a bit
No
Not bad, but not in a rock mood today so I didn't listen to all of it.
A couple bangers, a lot of cheese.
An apple a day
Long songs. Lowkey sounds like Fun. or Queen.
Pretty epic but queen we’re doing rock opera much better
i'm excited for this.. eh
Feels like a rock opera/musical and maybe it is but I haven’t paid much attention to the lyrics other than the weird furry dialogue. Dude can sing but not really my thing
An abolsute blast, but hard to take seriously (are we supposed to?) - I prefer this sound with Springsteen writing the songs.
Good grief. I don't like rock operas and I don't like classic rock. The amusing over the top campness stops it getting a 1/5
I cant do that
Heard Before? Of course. Notes: - I don't think Meat Loaf ever did better than his role in Rocky Horror Picture Show. - Endless musical theatre bullshit, with the best possible singer for Jim Steinman's absurd overwriting and obscenely crowded production. - An album completely immune to criticism because it's trying so hard to be exactly what you hate about it. Painfully successful. - I love the background vocals. Verdict: Someone needs to act out the repressed fantasies of normies. Meat Loaf was born ready. Listen Again? I can't think that anyone needs to except maybe closeted teenagers.
Not feeling this one either. Don't think it stood the test of time. 2/5. The Spotify radio based on this album was pretty great, though.
It wasn't bad
Nahhhh too over the top for me
Bat Out of Hell is notoriously cheesy, but I would actually argue that the album's biggest weakness is that it's not over-the-top enough. The songs that take big swings mostly work. The opener is fun and the biggest rocker, and the second track has a catchy chorus. "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" could do without that baseball metaphor bit in the middle - even if I like the funky music underneath it - but its big, humorous climax is worth the build-up and is the best moment on the album. Unfortunately, much of the rest of the album is dominated by ballads, which are rarely interesting. They don't make the best use of Meat Loaf's voice, and they seem tame compared to the album's highlights. They don't quite make the album unlistenable, but they definitely make it a mixed bag.
Mid and very underwhelming for a "hard rock" album with this cover art.
i don't know it's weird but not weird enough to keep me interested
Ummm. Interesting... Paradise by the Dashboard Light is cool though. Light 5 maybe 4
Hmmmm
I wish I could say “I was pleasantly surprised after not listening to this for a long time” but, nope. Every bit as cheesy and overwrought as I remember. It’s a testament to Meatloaf’s incredible charisma that this was ever a thing.
How is this one of the best selling studio albums of all time? The album cover does not match its music, and none of the songs feel like worth buying the record over. I don’t know, guess I’ll never understand being a dad on a boat in the late 70’s
Hmm.... nope
Ridiculous and cheesy but not entirely in a bad way.
Titelsong gut, sonst bisschen viel Musical
1. Bat Out of Hell (★★★⯨☆) 2. You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth (★★★☆☆) 3. Heaven Can Wait (★★⯨☆☆) 4. All Revved Up with No Place to Go (★★⯨☆☆) 5. Two Out of Three Ain't Bad (★★⯨☆☆) 6. Paradise By the Dashboard Light (★★★★☆) 7. For Crying Out Loud (★★★☆☆) TOTAL = ★★⯨☆☆ (3) -Lo sentí "inconsistente", me dio de promedio un 3 redondeando, pero no me convence por alguna razón, al punto de dudar en si ponerle un 2 pese a estar "bien".
5/10
Without a doubt, Meatloaf is exceptional, musically and vocally. But I just can't get on with it. It irritates the shit out of me.
It's alright, but it sounds too much like a dodgy musical for me
Me recontra sorprendió. Rescato esas cosas. Y la sorpresa, que es súper importante.
i do not dig in -- too lyrical, and lyricism in itself isn't bad but as i am influenced by my era, the plethora of words and bland instrumentals did not clash too well for me to regard as something that great. sure, this album probably created a lot of nuanced to rock, but i digress.
average
Sounds like Eddie from Rocky Horror.
So.. I guess Meatloaf is what you get when a musical theater kid decides to try to become a rock star? I mean, the music is good, but not my thing.
You can't deny the talent and skill but this kinda 'rock opera' stuff just doesn't do it for me
His name is Robert Paulson. I don't know what the hell this is supposed to be. I remember seeing it in all the record stores. Obvs it was some elder metal like Dio or Iron Maiden or sthg. Da fuq are these showtunes?? Whatever. I guess he's got pipes.
I give this a 2, because…just no. However, if I view it through the lens of a bizarre bat-themed musical, probably could justify a 3.
I have a hard time comparing this to other studio albums. There's a human element you get from seeing a live performance or musical theater show that is lacking here, and I can't help but lose some of the enjoyment of this album. This isn't music you'd casually listen to without some sort of emotional connection, and I don't think that will come to me from hitting the play button. This is Opera Rock, compared to Rock Opera. Go listen to The Wall, 2112, or Tommy.
Wow. This is a rock album for people that really would prefer a musical, but think this will help them fit in with their rock-loving friends. I guess they did make a musical of this, but I've not seen it and don't feel the need to. Just not a fan, but two stars because I know half the lyrics just from repeated exposure as a kid.
While I dont absolutely hate this album, listening once a decade is about all I can take
Meatloaf is Meatloaf. Didn’t know he wasn’t the writer for all those songs; also, is every song just about wanting a girl…same theme in every track got old fast.
I liked the more rock n roll song "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", however, the album missed something for me to fall for it and I can't wrap what was missing. Maybe more balance in terms of song lyrics?
Still doesn't do it for me. I can appreciate the ambition and craft here -- the energy and grandeur of 70s prog rock crossed with the bright shining drama of Broadway musicals. It's like the ultimate soundtrack to a teen romance movie. But so over the top.
I was glad to learn this was initially composed for a stage play. It definitely has a “show tune” feel. I liken it to a Springsteen album if the Boss was a 15 yo sex obsessed miscreant. The production is good and some songs are actually clever in parts, but I didn’t buy the album when it came out and I wouldn’t buy it now. Meatloaf got the pipes though.
No offense to them I just can’t do a 10 minute rock song from this guy. I just can’t. 2 stars
not my favourite, but probs just not my taste 2/5
Essentially a Broadway musical put to a hard rock template, and that's where the problems begin for me. It's maximalist, and "sounds" the part, but what initially feels ambitious and fantasy villain-esque on the surface ultimately comes off as a little too melodramatic, kitschy and indulgent for its own good. The title track in particular doesn't really use its length to evolve musically, rather repeating the same "peaks" which could have easily amounted to around 4 minutes. By the time you've reached the album's mid-section, you've been inundated with screeching guitars and crashing piano to the point of fatigue and parody.
this is just cishet rocky horror. i did not enjoy this LMAO
I did not expect Meat Loaf to be this. I expect some cheesy hard rock for some reason. But I did not like it.
The biggest meh I can offer
Painful listen. +1 star for making me laugh with incredulity that this went 14x platinum, two songs were entertaining and the production was good, the rest was unlistenable
im not really into this kind of long haired, stadium rock, but I have to admit the band is locked in, the vocalist has a powerful voice and the backing vocals are used very well what i dont really fw is this maximalistic, hyper dramatic and epic musical stuff, too many things happening at once without trying to be delicate, i dont know if they manage to create a something greater than the sum of its parts another thing that prevents me from enjoying this type of music, without this album being a particular exception, is how all this musical greatness clashes with the superficial and even artificial way it treats supposedly great themes like love or youth feels like too much stage for very little substance
Exhausting in a heterosexual theatre kid way.
not sure why but this album don’t really connect with me, had a sound overall that I didn’t really like
I feel like a dad. Nothing memorable here. 2/5
'Paradise By The Dashboardlight' is fine, but I don't really care for the rest... 2 stars
Paradise by the dashboard light is so good. but god Meatloaf and this theater rock is just not my style.
Paradise by the Dashboard light is awful
When it's got a good hook, I enjoy musical theatre and the more theatrical end of pop music. Even though the words “rock opera” don’t get me particularly excited I found the title track of Bat Out Of Hell to be pretty awesome - it's got a hell of a driving melody and plenty of character. Unfortunately it is in no way representative of the vast majority of the album which is home to too many overwrought takes on overlong Elton John-style ballads which are sadly not my thing. Occasionally they’ll bloom into something else, but not often enough for me.
Not my cup of tea . Never has been 2/5
Kæft en seriøs omgang rock'n'roll! Bliver lige lidt for underligt med "You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)" :o Kommer med alt sandsynlighed aldrig til at sætte det på igen :i
this is going so many places and doing so many things but really it is musical as they intended - short moments I liked but overall won’t be putting on I am not a metal leaning theater kid
No esta mal
What I imagine Todd’s rock opera to sound like
I guess....this....I just....I don't.... The thing is I don't really understand in what context I'm supposed to listen to Meat Loaf. Is this for people who love show tunes? Is this for people who tried to get into Sabbath but prefer something more upbeat?
me ha gustado una canción solo
Bruce Springsteen already did this album with Born to Run but even ol’ Brucey knew to be a bit more restrained than this. Grandeur for the sake of grandeur wears thin early, and turns everything from halfway through track 1 into a slog.
Am I crazy or is the title track almost a total rip of Springsteen’s “Thunder Road”? That topline melody sounds awfully familiar. I guess I thought I’d like it more? I’d heard “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” a bunch growing up on the radio, but otherwise I came into this with fresh ears. It’s one of the best selling albums of all time; surely that means I’ll get something out of it. His voice is deceptively classical, sometimes pushed into rock grit. There’s some nebulous story going on about escaping hell. I just didn’t think the songs were very exciting; even “Dashboard Light” (which I would’ve previously called an all-time banger) doesn’t hold up as well as I remember because now I can hear how much it sounds like the other songs on this thing. He repeats his ideas too often. “Heaven Can Wait” might as well have been as long as the rest of the songs. The lyrics had me shaking my head sometimes too. (“You’ve been cold to me so long/I’m crying icicles instead of tears” - yuck.) I am a theater kid at heart and this was still too much for me. I will probably still revisit “Dashboard Light” in a year or so when the bad taste is out of my mouth.
Not that bad but not really my style Songs are not as intense as the cover
So the album and everything about it before opening it suggests its rock, hard rock maybe. But im assuming this is the definition of a rock opera. Its good for the type of music I think, only 7 songs? But not for me. I would be annoyed if someone put this on for a road trip
Pretty stupid!
It is what it is
More theater kid shit. Everything I hate about a rock musical and nothing I like about rock.
Pretty extravagant, kinda cliche.
This sounds like someone bellowing at a piano in a noisy pub. The songs don’t do anything for me and I really don’t get the huge appeal this album seems to have. I think the style of music just isn’t for me.
This album art and title is WAY more metal than it deserves to be. Meat Loaf is just so fucking weird. Why was this guy popular?
a bit boring
His name may be Robert Paulsen, but this much melodrama and everything turned up is just too much for me.
earnest yearning fuxk-opera by horny 70s rock nerd
This meatloaf has a lot of cheese, but “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” ain’t bad. The rest of the album is laughable but not enjoyable.
Billy Joel meets Elton John. Super campy, no idea why the album cover is so metal. Good... not great.
Not sure how a bloke who never penned one word or note of his own music can be on this list. It was okay in parts, the last tracks rock n roll bits were quite fun but ruined by all the random interludes. Overall just feels like every rock cliché rolled into one album. 2 stars cos I did find myself bopping along a few times.
-mmmm interesting -very Dad music -I don’t hate it but wouldn’t listen to it again Liked: the end of You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth
One experience that was lost when we all started streaming music was going into a record store, flipping through the bins, and pulling out a record because it had an eye catching cover. Because look at this album cover! Conan the Barbarian exploding out of the ground in a creepy cemetery riding a Harley adorned with a horse skull! This is not at all the face-ripping Judas Priest soundalike you’d think from the art. Though to be fair, we’ve all known that for a long time. I have to admire the audacity here though. This album is completely ridiculous, over the top and dramatic, it seems like Meat Loaf is very aware of how ridiculous it is, and still he’s fully giving it. It’s theatre kid rock. It’s in bad taste, not because it’s offensive or anything like that, but just because it’s so schlocky. In the Standard Histories of Rock Music, the year this album was released, 1977, was the year that punk broke out, supposedly wiping all this stuff away. The sales figures of Bat Out of Hell alone paint a more realistic picture of what people were actually listening to.
5/10, had fun moments, was definitely better with the wider variety of instruments, wished there was more saxophone. Some of the songs were very forgettable and felt like they dragged on a bit too much.
First and last track were great, rest kind of faded into background but that's probs more my fault
Eh. Not likely to relisten.
I happily let them get on with obsessing over this while my instinct helped me not to engage. Eventually I gave in and checked it out properly. My instinct had been right all along. Now I’m having to listen again, but this will be the last time. A well executed Springsteen/Elton parody pumped with musical theatre steroids and stripped of all semblance of nuance. There you go, summed up in under 20 words. I used to think “fair fucks to the guy for overcoming being a socially anxious fat lad” but it turned out in the end he was kind of a pos so I can return comfortably to my instinctual position.
This album is a rollercoaster of emotions. There are periods that are like wow I kinda like this and then there are periods that are like wtf. The album starts off purely instrumental and it sounds good and then the vocals come and its like wow this feels like a theater kid. I thought that would ruin the album, but I got used to it. The songs are too long and drag on. You think its about to end but it keeps going and I wasn't a fan of that weird Disco transition that came in randomly for a bit. The songs are a bit overproduced, but they sound good and the instrumentals were the best part of the album for me.
4.5/10
5/10 This is not a bad album, but it's really, really, really not my kind of music. Every song is twice as long as it should be; for as elaborate and over-the-top each song is, they're all pretty dull; and I just don't like it tbqh.
Meh
Good album.
70s rock opera with incredibly cheesy lyrics, pass
Can’t fault the ambition and flamboyance of it, but I just didn’t like the songs underneath all the razzmatazz.
Has its moments, I guess.
I like some operatic stuff, like Queen. I even like some sappy camp, like Neil Diamond. But this was too theatrical and too campy for me. It’s fun, but it just didn’t land for me.
So campy. 1/3 Bruce, 1/3 Elton, 1/3 80s style ballads
31 days in and still no album by a woman, I present: Dreamland by Black Box. Enjoy!
Despite the overwhelming and not very subtle title track this is a soft album. This kind of rock opera is purely for those who do not like music but enjoy the spectacle.
Forty years plus later and I still don’t like this album. I’ve tried. But I consider this the first whiner album I heard in my life.
not bad, not my fave
This isn't rock and roll, it's musical theater. I find myself enjoying lots of it, but multiple times I've had the experience of being like "wait, this is the same fucking song?" and it is the same fucking song. They're all so long. Even the "short" songs feel like they just keep going on.
Honestly, I have no strong opinion on this album. It's not offensive, controversial, mindblowing, amazing, nor special to me. It reminds me of an amalgamation of other classic rock bands ... and Jack Black lol. I've also been doing this album-a-day thing for 15 days straight and I've only gotten one woman the whole time... so maybe I'm also just getting a little tired of men's voices in general? lol 2/5
I've always been confused by this, the cover and the title clash so much with the album. It has some kind of corny operatic quality, like some of the parts of 70's Bruce Springsteen where it reaches the edges off what I can tolerate and it goes beyond that. I just can't
It's okay I guess, lost interest after the 2nd song
Nääh, töntig musik med töntiga texter. Och inte töntigt på det bra sätt. Kändes nästan lite dansband ibland. Svag 2a…
Introsnacket i you took the words right out of my mouth och i princip hela paradise by the dashboard light, i synnerhet andra halvan. Ofattbart lökigt. Bat out of hell och All revved up, dunderlåtar båda två. Kul med Todd Rundgren på gurka. Stark 2a som i godkänt+
Really not my thing. Theatrical and often weird.
"We have Queen at home." The Queen at home:
Not my taste
#18/1001🇺🇸🦇 When this flashed up this morning, i though "here we go... my first 1 star rating." We listened to the album a lot at house parties in my teenage years but its over 30 years since i've heard it. I pressed play with some trepidation but have to say the first 2 tracks sounded amazing but by the time i reached "all revved up.." i was starting to lose the will tonlive. Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad isnt a bad song, just on the right side of schmaltzy. Paradise by the Dashboard light is just too much though - i've always detested even more after seeing a couple sing it (heavily rehearsed) at a pub in Ramsbottom. This is undoubtedly my lowest point in this project so far. I hope it generates some fast dirty Punk Rock for me next. Best bit... when i realised i had reached the end.
Always hated this nonsense.
Meatloaf is not for me lol. Looooong songs, a bit same-y? Veeeery sexual. There was a couple I quite liked though
That cover is metal. But if anything, this is Theater Kid metal. Look, its done well, and I had a chuckle or two with the lyrics, but this rock opera kinda sound just isn't my vibe.
Favourite Songs: Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad
Not my style but interesting
Everything about this record is contradictory - even the album art would make one assume that this is some kind of heavy metal sonic escape from hell, not 45 minutes of over-the-top theater filled with glimmering percussion and maximalist over-done doo-woo inspired teenybopper “kissin tunes”. Our bat, on his way out of Hell, is Meatloaf, himself. He’s a motorbike riding, show tunes-singing goofball in a leather jacket and his record is a testament to not judging a book by its cover - even if it’s sometimes for the worse. That being said, Paradise By The Dashboard Light is pretty epic, despite content that has not aged well.
