Reviews (page 12 of 14)
Dashboard light is prima. Two out of three aint bad is dan weer een van mijn minst favoriete nummers. 4/10
I was excited for this one as I had never actually listened to it and it just wasn't for me. I respect the composition and the vocals are great, but the album just drags in so many places. 46 min runtime for 7 songs is wild to me and I find the songs rarely earn the run time and even the ones that are mostly good feel like they have so much filler. I get that it's supposed to be a bit musical theatre and campy, but it just didn't land for me.
interesting name but iconic nonetheless
I'm normally all about power ballads, but this one didn't hook me.
This does what it set out to do basically flawlessly, and I'm glad it exists so that the title track and Paradise... can be in karaoke rotations, but if the question is "would I ever listen to this on purpose" the answer is resoundingly "no"
very late 70s rock pop with the occasional metal element / ballad bisschen boring if I gotta b honest
I really Do Not like 70s rock
Over the top, indulgent, but not like ELO or something where there are fun hooks. I like Todd Rundgren but his production here lacks any of the sporadic energy of his best works. Feels like music for Aussie dads to play while cooking snags and drinking VB.
Very, very dramatic.
Firstly, I really don’t like many musicals, so anything rock opera was already at a disadvantage. It was important to listen to for general pop culture knowledge and I now understand how Meat Loaf was huge inspo for Jack Black, and why in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the guy’s dream of doing a Dracula rock opera was a clear ML reference, but no matter how much I read into Meat Loaf and tried to register to the album, the songs were too long, and never ended, and the energy was so grating. (Also I have to admit I went to go look at some other reviews and my favourite was that this was “Bruce Springsteen for theatre kids”.)
I was split between giving a 2 or a 3. This album is extremely over the top rock as theatre stuff, and is not something I want to put on in most contexts, so it's hard for me to say it's better than a weak 2.5. I'd acknowledge it's unique and has had staying power. All apologies to Bates, who does a killer Metaloaf at Karaoke every time. I remember being fairly drawn to this album myself as a teen, probably partially due to the cool album art as much as the teen melodrama of the lyrics. As an adult reading up on this I keep on seeing mentions of how producer Todd Rundgren took Meatloaf for an over-the-top parody of Bruce Springsteen, despite the fact that Meatloaf actually performed this music quite sincerely. I guess the fun with Adam West was that his Batman was also completely sincere. Melodramatic teen feelings set to theatrical power ballads, like if Andrew Lloyd Weber or Wagner was a retro rocker act.
Again, will he offer me his hunger? I thought this album would be a lot and I wasn’t nearly prepared for what I would encounter. The only restraint shown was that it somehow held itself to 9 songs and 61 minutes. The lyricism is silly, orchestration over the top but Meatloaf is the right voice for “this” and make songs like Dashboard fun.
tedious, lounge singer
Did not enjoy, honestly thought it was pretty odd.
Was really not in this mood. Maybe another time.
Crap from start to finish.
Wasn't my favorite but okay
339/1089 - I feel like I'm listening to fucking Brentalfloss... So this is the album where he and Jack Black got their stupid voice and theatrics from! On another note, I like Todd Rundgren so at least this is a polished turd, the best 1 star if you will (and I will!).
Should be aitnfelr like it was trying to be a stage show but ended up being a Pantomime
One start for obvious musical talent, but this ain't my thing. Not the worst album we've suffered through in this series, but not one I'll every put on again.
Operatic rock that's just way too theatrical for me.
Not my favorite Elton John cover band
Used to love it as a teenager but now feels masochonistic
i like rhps. but the kitschy tongue in cheek fun of the film is lost without, well, the film.
Not my vibe
Why
Good but not my type
Not really any bangers. Just a bit boring really.
How is this one of the top selling albums of all time? So basic and goofy in a not-that-fun way.
Sounds like show tunes. Not a fan.
this is kind of like darksided bruce springsteen. it’s really, really theatrical in a way that’s almost charming if rather pitiful in its tastelessness.
Man, the 70s were weird as hell. I'm not averse to grandiose, over-the-top bullshit, at least not all the time. Some of the tracks really rock out and achieve the sort of epic scope that he's clearly going for. Trouble is as soon as the melodramatic caterwauling begins, I immediately get stuck on how dumb and corny it is. And not, for me at least, the fun kind of dumb and corny.
i liked the wolf song, funny asf. idk not in the mood overall 2.5.
I was looking forwards to this. The album was a bit forgettable and tedious. I think it was an album of a time.
I mean, it's legendary and I don't need to hear it again. 🫠
fucking hilarious
at least it doesn't take itself serious fav song: bat out of hell ig
One Great song
60
I guess it's impressive that this was a debut album? And I mean, we all love Paradise by the Dashboard Light. The ultimate in cheesy fun. And I always kind of liked Two Out of Three Ain't Bad. But it's just all so over the top. And why are all the songs so long?
Much too heavy.
His name was Robert Paulson.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Two certified bangers bookending garbage.
ok
Many a weekend night at the bar on the dance floor in the late 80s I was jamming out to Paradise with a girl. We would each play the part and scream the lyrics. It’s a fun party song. The problem with much of Meatloafs music is that he took it way too seriously (wish he took COVID as seriously. Too soon?). He made some fun rock music. Made an interesting appearance in a cult movie…..and ended up as the meat for dinner. But he it is not someone I turn to when I’m ready to rock. It’s something discovered while scanning channels or that shows up in my Spotify algorithm…..especially now.
I don't think this is my type of concept album, this feels like a musical that got unfiltered access to illicit drugs 5/10 i can see the appeal its just not for me
A high school musical production get way out of hand. 2 stars.
Classic rock opera. (It’s … alright.)
What the fuck. Listened to by people who say "they don't make music like they used to", "this is real music", and who enjoy looking down on your music taste for no good reason.
Not sure what I was expecting but this wasn’t it and I didn’t enjoy it.
I actually thought I was going to like some of this but I was wrong. Super cheesy. 1.5
I get it but couldn't finish this
Meatloaf is sooo dramatic. His albums are like a soundtrack from a Broadway musical. Very kitchy and almost comedic. It wears thin very quickly. It's like a parody of itself. No thanks.
I almost exclusively listen to musicals (and musical-esque things) in one of two conditions: I am viewing a live theatrical performance, or I am being paid to play the music for a theatrical performance. I honestly don't like musicals outside of that.
Completely overblown and pompous in its style and production, it does very little for me I’m afraid. It gets 2 stars purely for its ambition and effort.
It's kinda fun, but mostly kinda cringe. In a sense, that they basically laid out many of the cringiest 1980s rock cliches here, even though this came out in 1977. I guess you can't blame them for being slightly ahead of their time.
Overwrought garbage, which I suppose is what people like about it. I don’t think it’s even well put together though.
This is an interesting one, since I know the hits, but I have never listened to the actual LP from start to finish. First track starts with a cacophony that sounds like a showtune run through a 70s prog and butt rock filter. Imagine Boston pumping up a crowd at a regional circus and you're getting close. When Meat (can I call him Meat?) starts to sing along with the piano it gives off Billy Joel and Springsteen vibes, but not as compelling as either. Lots of shout whispers. Not sold yet. Okay, weird spoken word shit here. Oh, I know this song! Didn't know it was Mr. Loaf. Eh on the performance. Not the worst thing I've ever heard - kind of like Andrew Lloyd Weber produced by Phil Spector. Ballad time. Yawn. This one brings the tempo up a little bit. Hope you like saxophones. I know this song, but the I feel like I've never heard the intros before. Anyway, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad is an objectively bad song. I'll sit through it, but I won't enjoy it. Paradise By The Dashboard Lights rules. It's long as hell though, so rethink it as a karaoke option if you've been drinking heavily and/or have stamina issues. Closing song has closing song vibes. Something about being cold in California. Oh, wait, here comes the bombast. Lots of build ups and cymbal crashes. Well, what's it going to be boy? I said what's it going to be boy, yes or.....?
Not terrible, but not my style. It's funny I didn't realize Meat Loaf was a major contributor to writing the songs for Rocky Horror Picture Show, and if you listen to Bat Out Of Hell through that lens of musical theater and rock operas, with an emphasis on the over-dramatic and flamboyant, this record makes a lot of sense. It's kinda wild it grew to be as popular as it did. Listening now it feels it should be far more fringe.
Honestly, it’s a great title track. The rest is fine; better than fine if you like operatic rock ballads (I do not). I still can’t imagine being a teenager in 1977 and seeing or hearing the three layers of crazy juxtaposition: the cover that says “this is metal you fuckers”, the artist name that says “wait what the fuck”, and the music that says “wait what is actually going on here?” It isn’t a bad album, it just isn’t for me. And as someone who is open about how little ballad rock he listens to, I can’t compare this to much. I mean it’s better than 90% of Bon Jovi’s catalogue, but that bar is low. I feel bad giving this a 2, but there are albums I’d rank at 3 that I like so much more. I also will never get beyond Meat Loaf’s appearance in Fight Club. “Bob’s new sweating tits that hang enormous, the way you think of God’s as big.”
Många ingredienser i den här svulstiga stuvningen. Ta Springsteens Born to run, The Ronettes Be My baby och Phil Spectors hela Wall of sound, ta Slade, Gary Glitter, Rocky horror show och rör om.
Men sen lyckas man tyvärr även få in en hel del musikal.
Corny. The songs were too long. They weren’t terrible, but it wasn’t for me.
Great production value but not really my taste
I wish I was more in the mood to listen to Opera Rock when I got this album but I’m not all the way mad at it. I’d be interested in revisiting this in the future.
Very theatrical, reckon would be fun to listen to live - not quite my thing
It was never going to be GOOD...but I did at least hope for it to be more fun. Title track aside, it seems like glam rock by numbers to me.
This is obviously not one of the 1001 Best Albums. But I'm giving it a 2 based on my love for it when I was a dumb kid in the 70s.
A couple of good ones, notably the extended version of Bat Out Of Hell, but otherwise this was pretty forgettable.
Exactly what I thought a Meatloaf album was.
Had always heard of Meatloaf - did not realize this is his origin. Wow, is this very much of it's time. Considering it is a bat out of Hell, I thought it would be more intense/metal - instead the sax and vocals feel like a cheesy 80's sitcom or musical (which tracks, given the info in the wiki link). Def not my jam - not into over the top, over-dramatic rock operas! Will never ever listen to this again!
Never listened to before other than hearing to hits on the radio. Was expecting to like more than I actually did.
Don't know, couldn't listen to it to the very end. Just not my cup of tea, it seems. Feels like I've listed to it so many times that it just feels bland. Perhaps, there's some historical context I'm missing.
No my cup of tea. Not sure if meatloaf is parody or earnest and that's not great.
Garage band?? Idk man this seems like custom mode in guitar hero after doing some type of illegal stimulant.
This album was meh. I felt like I was listening to a musical all the way through, which I’m not sure a band named Meatloaf intended to happen
Felt like i was back in 7th period advanced drama class. I do not wish to go back to that.
Sounds kinda like Elton John. 🤷♀️ Power Ballads aren’t really for me.
Sounds like that one scene in Happy Gilmore where he tries to go to his happy place and his gran is necking on with Gene Simmons, or like a rock opera version of Thunder Road by Springsteen
I've never listened to Meatloaf before, I was definitely expecting more of a Metal album based off the cover art, not what sounded like a 1970s rock opera. It was a fun listen but definitely not what I was expecting. As I listened to the album more I got more into the groove of it, but it just wasn't what I was expecting.
I like him as a performer (his sweat drenched performances on OGWT are amazing) and I like some of these songs in isolation but as an album it is a bit much.
Saw a review that said this was a heterosexual’s Elton John which seems pretty on the nose. Seems to employ similar tropes in a lot of songs, lyrical or melodic hook, followed by quieter piano part, build up to uptempo rock part, changing tempo occasionally and repeat ad infinitum. It’s just a bit…much isn’t it? Very little finesse on a lot of it.
Nope. Not my cup of tea. Interesting, though.
2 out of 5 ain’t bad. Had some Italian restaurant vibes but not as good
Rock opera has never really been something I seek out, so this is an interesting first album to get! Part way in, this is very cheesy and over-the-top. It reminds me a lot of Christmas in a sense despite no direct connection. I don't dislike it so far, both "Bat Out of Hell" and "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)" delivered about what I expected with the intense guitar riffs, general instrumental weight, and booming screams of a vocal delivery. "Heaven Can Wait" is a pretty minimalist ballad, a nice change of pace from the prior two tracks. "All Revved Up With No Place To Go" follows up with more of the prior funk, feeling very 50s in its soundscape. This one ends up being a bit too tacky for my tastes especially with the very sped-up ending. "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" didn't particularly stand out from prior tracks in any way to me. It's yet more decent rock opera. "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" definitely has the most variation, being a song in three acts, with increasing dramatics between the two characters portrayed in the lyrics. It builds to a satisfying climax, definitely standing out amidst its contemporaries. "For Crying Out Loud" goes for a more ballad-y approach to finish off the album, while still getting quite operatic. The piano work here is pleasant. Overall, a pretty cheesy product that is very of its time, even with all the 50s influence strewn throughout the construction of the music. Nice to explore, but not something I'd soon revisit.
If 'The Room' were an album, this would be it. It's fucking terrible, but I don't hate it.
picks: bat out of hell, paradise by the dashboard light
This album is over the top, over produced, cheesy and everything you’d expect from Meat Loaf. The opening to You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth is absolutely ridiculous. Bat Out of Hell saves it from 1 star treatment.
Okisg
strange - i usually like strange but…meh. Sad cuz i do like rocky horror
I would have thought this was glam rock, but the delivery is just a bit too earnest to have any level of self-awareness about the cheesiness. The titular track is alright but the rest is a big bag of meh.
This is rock opera. I don't like rock opera. Earlier in this project I hypothesized that part of the reason for The Beatles' success was that their tracks are short and to the point--every track on Hard Day's Night is under 3 minutes. This is anything but that. 4:19 is the shortest track. Three tracks are 8 minutes or longer. Also clapping? Please don't. Heavy sax? Also a no for me. 2/5
Quite a voice, but also sappy orchestration and lyrics that put me to sleep. Zzz
not bad, quite a short album though
Pomp rock, well produced strong songs overblown for my tastes.
I genuinely dislike Bat Out of Hell. The heart loathes what it loathes.
Good guitar riffs, but I’m not a fan. Made for a musical.
Kind of sucked--
It didn't really get me. I think it would have been different, had i seen the musical
Me pareció grasa, excesivo y graciosamente estúpido.
mostly painful
interesting album, idk why there was a whole conversation before one of the songs. very odd and quirky but fun.
70s rock pomposity at it's finest. Jim Steinman can suck a dick. Not a fan of this album.
Why is this one of the best selling albums of all time?
probably the funniest album so far
Over the top.
I enjoyed the listening of this album, quite a nice transition from a song to another 2/5
It’s been said but I have to say it again: the cover and title of this album vs the actual content is insane. This is a cross between a bad Queen album and a broadway musical. It’s so over the top and so dramatic, and not in a really good way. The songwriting is good in the sense that it’s complex and has some bizarre ass theme running through it, both musically and thematically. Meat Loaf himself has a good voice and a wide range, but it’s kind of lost in this total cheese fest that’s going on. This is a theater kids idea of a concept album I guess, and while technically it’s sound, the rest is too much for me. This is music for a person nearly diametrically opposed to me musically.
Im not going to listen to this again. Not very memorable or intersting. Maybe I jsut didnt get it. It's some epic longer songs with classic rock souns. not very bluesy. It's theatrical and glammy. 2/5
Rock opera galore! Not a big fan but can appreciate! Can't believe 'I Will Do Anything For Love' is not here!
Didn't enjoy
Not my thing.
I think this just isn't my kind of music to be honest. There are a few good songs but in general neither the vocals nor lyrics are really impressive, the instruments do a lot better but overall I just don't really care for this. Starts not so bad, Bat Out of Hell sounds good at times but often falls into becoming what I'd imagine a stereotypical rock song to sound like. It has quite a few nice moments, weirdly enough I think its near 10 minute length is somewhat warranted, it doesn't really become stale but for me personally that is still too long to listen to this kind of song, I can't imagine wanting to come back to it. I liked the opening to the second song, kinda funny. The song is decent, pretty catchy. Heaven can wait stands out I guess, not in a good way. All Revved up is pretty good, I quite like his singing here especially at the end and the saxophone is cool. Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad became something better than I expected but went on for too long. Again the same issues are present. Paradise By the Dashboard - has some pretty stand out moments, I like the piano a lot when the woman is singing, and her vocals are good, I liked when the presenter guy came in but then he just stayed for way too long. I enjoyed when they both sang though, and the general idea behind the track is kinda fun. Good stuff though I'd prefer it to be shorter, although I can maybe see myself coming back to this. For Crying Out Loud is okay, the later middle section is actually really good as all these instruments come in, probably the highlight of the album for me. Unfortunately the rest of the song doesn't hold up. Best tracks - You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth, All Revved Up with No Place to Go, Paradise By the Dashboard Light Worst tracks - Heaven Can Wait, Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad
Not for me
It’s bad but not that bad but actually that bad
Not my vibe at all.
Meat Loaf... I can't help but quite like the more upbeat tracks, 'Bat Out Of Hell' being the classic, of course. The slower tracks like 'Heaven Can Wait' don't work for me, I just can't take him seriously enough. Apart from the frustratingly long tracks, it was an enjoyable listen just for the sake of it but once is enough for me.
Overblown!
no thank u
Hokey. Not very good.
Song 1: great opening riff, sets a good mood and makes you want to listen, I like the voice, cool chorus, it does get a little less exciting throughout.. that guitar sound is amazing though 2: weird fucking intro ok, I get the vision but don't love the execution; the song itself is quite cool though, cool rhythm & vibe 3: piano ballad of course, but it's actually quite nice i mean he's the master of ballads I guess 4. More upbeat again, it is nice but I feel like it's missing something, it could do with more of a punch kinda, sax solo.. hm ok but it kinda works but it's also getting annoying over the singing now, it's picking up towards the end I like this 5. Slower song again, it's nice, kinda soppy, it's a bit boring towards the end but it has me bopping my head tbh 6. Yess guitar is back, more upbeat rocknroll vibe, but tbh I feel like it suits his voice less, ok it has a crazy cut in the middle I actually really liked that part but it lasted like 5 seconds, now were at sprechgesang again ugh 7. Last song is.. a ballad. I feel like ballads are fine but now necessarily as a closing song? Ok I thought it was over but there was a kinda transition, now there's violins which is ..fine, ok great it's picking up now I love that, great drums. Kinda disappointing ending though, it's just too slow Final thoughts: it's very meat-loafey. He has got a certain sound & style that become apparent. The songs flow together nicely but the album doesn't feel very well-rounded to me. The songs all seem quite similar to me and there aren't a lot of highpoints or variations that stand out. The first track, which is the title track, seems the most promising, it offers a nice start to the album, with a great guitar sound and interesting melodies but it just isn't followed up by the rest of the album, which is disappointing. Even his piano ballads, which he is known for, don't really pick me up. Some of the songs might be alright/ better as stand-alones but just get swallowed up in the ensemble. Some songs might be added to my playlist but the album as a whole wouldn't get an s (spotify stream) or b (buy album) from me.
Pop-prätkäilyä, hyvin teatraalinen, ymmärrän kyllä huumoriarvon ja oikeasti toimivien melodioiden ja laulun tehon. Ei jätä kylmäksi, mutta en ihastu. Liian clean.
So, I'm 41 years old. I really like the idea of what Meat Loaf is doing, broadly. I am really into over-the-top theatrical music that is taking itself super, super seriously. I really do. But Meat Loaf is also like super annoying, I think. I don't know if I was born 25 years earlier if I would be All In on what he's doing, but I suspect that I would not be. Ultimately I could just wave this away and say 'whatever, Meat Loaf is clearly Not For Me', but I think it goes a little deeper than that. I think Meat Loaf as a project is interesting, and intriguing, but I think that it's entirely too much in a way that becomes grating. I'm sure there are many out there that will hate the dismissive tone of this, but I think that what Meat Loaf IS as an artist is the sort of thing that should be aging gracefully -- We as a society are so much more into people doing their thing, no matter how weird or niche it is -- but I think the opposite is happening.
Not a fan of show tunes. Not a fan of Rocky Horror picture show. This was all of that and then some. I've never really been into Meat Loaf at all. Next.
It reminds me a lot of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I never understood what the big deal was with Rocky Horror, and I feel the same about Bat out of Hell
If it’s not Rocky Horror, I don’t want anything to do with Meat Loaf. It’s a lot and not in a way that I enjoy.
I think it’s fun and theatrical, but perhaps a little hard to listen to unironically. He’s definitely got the it factor for the stage
Some of these songs just drag onnn
This is a rock album for theater kids, as some of the other commenters have said. Honestly, not for me. It felt a little too over-the-top, though I get that that's the point. Meat Loaf's vocals were certainly the highlight of the album, as his range and vocal power is undeniable. If you like Rocky Horror or that kind of thing, I imagine you would really like this album.
Eh. I appreciate the musical theatre aspect of it, but it isn’t for me.
This is what being nicknamed “Meat” by one’s own father does to an MFer
I was listening to this and thinking to myself (after listening to Deep Purple in Rock and HATING it): "maybe I do like rock?". Nope. I like musicals, and this is a rock-flavored musical, which was fine I guess, but I think all the parts of it that I liked were the musical parts and none of them were the rock ones. It was fun to listen to, still. "The album was developed from the musical Neverland." -Wikipedia Yep.
It's actually impressive how closely this straddles the line between music I like and music that makes me want to go postal. The Todd Rundgren production definitely helps, and when the song writing is good I actually don't mind it that much. The fact that it is sorta winkingly over-the-top can veer towards endearing for me, but at times the melodies are just so uninteresting that the cheesiness is all that is left for me and then I just don't give a shit. Ultimately none of the songs really stuck with me but I at least found it interesting to listen to and ponder whether or not I liked it whereas Deep Purple was just a slog of hatred and suicidality Fav song: Paradise by the Dashboard Light
2,4/5
ok but that's about as strongly as i feel
Too corny, even for me. And I have some serious tolerance to stuff like this
For some reason I've always loved 'Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad'. I can't explain why because it's just an overblown ballad, but there's something about the melody, the silly emotional lyrics, and the big chorus. This trouble is that it's the only track I can listen too, and One out of Seven IS bad 😀
I really don't like this album. Too many people overplayed it as I was entering my teenage years and I got fed up of hearing it. Can't give it a 1* though because I have already heard worse albums. 2*
Familiar with these songs but never sat and listened to the entire album. Classic rock with an opera/stageshow feel. Impressed but not something I’d revisit.
This is what i call epicslop, like tenacious D and shit.
Track 8 is fun
I'm just not into your mixed messages, Meat Loaf.
Shite
Mediocre.
Gear: ZMF Bokeh Artwork: 🤘🏍️🦇 Production: 😑😳🤢 Music: 🎸🔥🎭 Rating: 🛵🛵/5
I don’t get Meat Loaf’s cult following
Middle of the road listen I get the operatic, theatre approach and production, but it didn’t track for me. Talented guy for sure, just not my thing
Way more opera than I want in my rock operas
Not really my thing, but I respect the commitment to this level of dramaticism.
The chart-longevity lasting appeal of this album is unprecedented. Apart from it's a good collaboration story, it was also a timestamp of how the industry was at the time. To modern music listeners, this album is significant in music history - as during the time of punk movement, this album was unique with its excessively theatrical rock sound that was able to get commercial traction despite the 'current' sound at the time.
I enjoyed the starting energy of the album which kinda toned down by the end. The saxophone was by far my favorite but was only in one song. All in all I will probably have 3 of the songs in my head for a while, and I can appreciate the album , but I didn't favorite any of the songs to come back to later.
Not really my thing. Meat Loaf is like Elton John putting on a hard rock/metal persona. I'm sure it has some charm, but doesn't resonate with me. Also, the name "Meat Loaf" for an act is terrible.
Don’t like his voice
Middle-of-the-road mix between 70s rock, pop, and Grease-esque showtunes. Easy listening but nothing soul-stirring. Might have been novel at the time.
If you like showtunes you might have a better time than me.
This sounds like a musical, and I hate musicals. Vocals far too far forward in the mix, muddy music, poorly recorded and/or mixed. Some decent guitar parts.
Bloated and with zero depth. The blandest of rock opera
Some of the tracks are a mishmash of indiscernible themes and monotonous riffing. Heaven Can Wait is a standout from those, a piano ballad somewhat reminiscent of Billy Joel or Elton John but with less charm. From the perspective of 2025, a lot of the music feels tired and overdone cliches. If Bat Out of Hell didn't take itself so seriously, maybe it would be a bit more enjoyable, or at least comical.
Rock operas are such an interesting concept, what if a concept album was just BIG. You can really about anything, a kid with cancer (Black Parade) or a reinterpretation of the classic Megaman series (Act II: The Father of Death). Whatever way, shape or form it might be the fact that people decide to push rock like this is always interesting to me, even if it's not a concept that I'm always into, I guess because the spectacle made out of a Rock Opera always feels like too much and it's also combined with music I'm not crazy about, hard rock/pop rock. So, even though Bat Out of Hell is like *THE* Rock Opera and so cheesy it's basically wearing the word as a badge of honor, I still don't feel much for it sadly. I think partly because I always imagined that it was gonna sound bigger and then obviously that it operates in a sound that I'm not too fond of, but Meat Loaf's presence and the way the album sounds so passionate really does make it at the very least a fun listen. I don't think I'll grow fond of this one but I do think anyone who likes their 80s cheese and their big operatic things should check this out
An overwrought, over the top melodrama set to music from the "great" Meatloaf and created and written by composer, Jim Steinman. I didn't realize that Bat Out Of Hell was developed from a musical, Neverland, a futuristic version of Peter Pan. It has all the musical theatre trademarks that makes it hard to take this seriously and (at least in my mind) the comparisons to the hokey, Rocky Horror Picture Show (Hmmm, Meatloaf was in that one too) can't be ignored. The interplay between Meat and singer, Ellen Foley during, Paradise By The Dashboard was so dramatic and cringy, it was actually hilarious. I saw a video of a live performance after this came out with a fat, sweaty Meat groping and literally smothering the singer (might not have been Foley?) during the song and that's what is stuck in my mind when I hear the song. Yeah, that song could have had it's own musical and of course (surprise, surprise), the whole Bat Out Of Hell concept has since become the basis of a musical. I was in high school when this album was released and I couldn't believe how popular this became. Naturally, since it was so "good", sequels were required, Bat Out Of Hell II and III were milked out of this supposed classic and it continues to blow my mind people ate up this shit. I admit, there were a couple of decent songs on Bat... and Dashboard will forever be a staple on classic rock radio, but seriously, a whole cottage industry built around this flimsy concept album must deserve a place on this list, right?
Not really my thing
My unplanned typo refers to this guy as 'Meat Load,' which I think works much better than his stage name, tho not as good a 'Bitch Tits.' I assume this is what people mean by 'Rock Opera' since nobody I know would willingly spend time subjecting themselves to it.
Couple of bangers but it's otherwise not amazing
When this came up, I thought it would be fun to listen to this again for the first time in years. You know, in a cheesy, ironic way of course. But nope, that was draining and painful. What a load of overblown nonsense. Music for people that don't like music.
So over the top it actually *almost becomes good… but only almost, because I find the whole thing funny instead, which isn’t the intent, I think. I’m not sure I have the stamina to listen through this from start to finish again, but there are a few songs, that are good on their own
This album had a fantastic first and last track, a truly epic and energetic start and a beautiful end, that being said, the middle chunk of this album is weaker to me, no bad songs here but definitely some mediocre ones.
not terrible, but not good. The grandiose singing and pianos get very ranty and I'm never sure when the songs are gonna end. It feels fun tho so I'd give it like a 5
3 things I don't voluntarily listen to on my stereo. 1. Broadway Musical Soundtracks 2. Queen 3. Meat Loaf Ever notice you never seen them all in the same room together? That's because they're all the same thing, and not for me.
I have never enjoyed Meat Loaf’s music. I really can’t tolerate anymore. This is too loud and obnoxious. Stopping in the first song.
Apologies Mr. Loaf. I do not like it. I’ll give a two because you were in rocky horror and fight club.
Melodramatic, operatic, and as huge and bombastic as it is quiet and sensitive. This album has a lot to offer, but rarely connects for me. While I can't fault the performances, this is all too over-produced and over-written for my taste. Best Tracks: - Paradise By the Dashboard Light Worst Tracks: - You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth - For Crying Out Loud Rating: 5.5/10
All of the songs are very Meat-Loafie in the sense that all of them reminded me of Paradise By the Dashboard Light. I don't necessarily mind that, but I also don't enjoy it, so no more than 2/5 for me.
Maso
Just...a lot.
Me
Powerful voice, still worth listening to. Even if the bombastic sound seems to have fallen out of time
Why is it so theatrical? Like I’m listening to a musical. So cheesy. Maybe it sounds cheesy bc it was the first of its kind. Sounds like the chorus is doing jazz hands in the back. 73/100 on album of the year seems about 13 points too high. 46 mins, 6 songs —. Zoned out of most of “Took the words right out of my mouth”. Oh god a clapping section. Genuinely want to meet the person that meatloaf wrote some of these about, I would be terrified if I were the subject of these songs. Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, growl-y saxophone comes in during “all revved up but no place to go”. Honestly if these songs were cut by about 50%, this album would be listen-able. It’s a toe tapper bc of all the blues scales, which were invented by black people. Glad I never have to listen to this album again.
I have never enjoyed Meat Loaf’s music. I really can’t tolerate anymore. This is too loud and obnoxious. Stopping in the first song.
Not usually my style but didnt mind the album. Some good hits and vibes in the songs.
Not my favorite
Really did not enjoy. I mean at all.
Rocky Horror Springsteen Show.
I didn’t like the overall musical movie style, though there are some cool songs like « All revved up… » 2 stars for me
I could not wait for this to be over. In all honesty, I skipped the two biggest songs because I have already heard them countless times already, and always against my will. I have to admit that technically Meat does have a good voice. But my word this stuff gets old. What do we call this, rock opera? Does every song have to be the same. Ugh. I dislike this whole album so much I can’t even pinpoint what about it annoys me so much. Anyway, personal preference is 1/5, but there is some objectively good musicianship on here, so an extra star for that. I did enjoy the piano part on Heaven Can Wait.
Not at all what I expected from the album art. Not my thing, but I applaud that it was a seemingly grand production. I gave it two stars as opposed to one because, while I didn't like any songs enough to save them, and I don't see myself ever seeking out more music by Meatloaf, I found myself tapping my feet a few times. So there's that. Fav Tracks: Paradise by the Dashboard Least Fav Tracks: Bat at Hell (the outro)
Meh.
Ooookaaay. I did not realize this was going to be basically musical theater music. I mean, it's well put together for what it is, and he has an impressive singing voice, but I can't take it seriously at all. Some of the spoken word parts were uncomfortable.
Not for me
Album cover: 4 out of 5. Album: Oof. An album screaming for a musical. One that stays off Broadway. It succeeds at what it wants to do which is to be an overly bombastic "rock n roll" album. I don't want that though.
Very generic dad rock, epic long songs, I thought Bat Out Of Hell and Paradise By The Dashboard Light were fun (Although pretty corny), all the other songs were kind of a chore to listen to, but I can respect the energy and effort put into the songwriting, the whole Gen X dad music just isn’t for me
I’m sure this is the exact intention but this album sounds like it was written for a musical and I don’t like that.
Used to enjoy this in high school. Then some sorority played PbtDL 1000 times at social events in college and now it makes me want to jab pencils in my eardrums when it’s playing.
Didn't like it at all, it has a good guitar, but it's just the happy ol' style from the 80's that doesn't sit right with me
I feel like Meat Loaf is really good at what he does, but I just don't think I understand what that is
There is a reason this album which is one of the best selling albums of all time is not talked about in today's modern music landscape. It has aged terribly and does not hold the same longevity as its contemporaries have
You know, I thought I liked meatloaf. I realized that although I think these songs on this album are okay. It wasn't quite what I remembered. Glad I'm listened but none of them are going into the rotation
Huh. So the six minute radio play version of Bat Out Of Hell is an edit. Who knew? (Not me, evidently…). Making eternity last just that bit longer. Cruel.
Like a musical about metal made by people that never heard metal music
If I could use one word to describe this album, it would be corny. Some more words would be incredibly dated. Maybe this had a bigger impact when it was released, but 45 mins of pop-rock ballads with varying degrees of innuendo got old for me very fast. Some definite fun moments that are limited to the opening tracks on both sides of the record. Top tracks: Bat Out of Hell, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad
Not bad
Over the top. Not my thing
Pas fan.
Kind of over the top and showy in an un-fun way
2.25
meh
The only reason it's even getting a 2 is due to a certain degree of familiarity.
Story Time: 10-15 years ago, or whenever I was in high school, I used to drive a relatively old car to school that only had a cassette player and a radio. At the time I was into classic rock, and there was really only one rock station in my area, so I would listen to it as I drove to school. I don't know who ran that station, but who ever they were they LOVED Paradise By The Dashboard Light right when I would start my drive, because it felt like at least twice a week minimum I would hear it. I get that you can't really make more "classic rock" so there is a limit pool of songs and what not, but that song is 8 and a half minutes long, and my drive was only 10ish minutes. So if that song came on I would be stuck listening to it my whole ride. At first I didn't really have much of an opinion on the song, but I kind of liked the chorus. But as the year went on I slowly grew to hate and despise the song and Meat Loaf himself. The point of this story is I have a grudge against Meat Loaf. Ok, back to the album. First off, this album cover is waaaay too cool for how lame the music is. Grudge aside, Meat Loaf is a good singer, but the songs are a little too theatrical and campy for my taste. The ratio to piano ballads to rockers is also too high in my opinion. I still hate PBTDBL. If I didn't have a bias, this would be a 3. But I do have a bias, so it is a 2.
So I'm biased against this album from the get go. Bat Out of Hell II was a massive hit in 1993 and the songs were inescapable but I hated them so... sorry Mr Loaf. However, I did my best to go in with fresh ears and... it's a fine album. Very well done. Good production. Good songwriting. Good pacing and flow as an album. It's also very much not my thing. "Rock Opera." Yeah, it's showtunes. I mean, call it whatever you need to call it and kudos if you convinced some jock meatheads to expand their horizons a bit but it's showtunes. I listened to the whole thing and ultimately, I'm glad I did. Not necessarily because I liked it but because the songs *are* good and I am trying to expand my own horizons a bit. That being said, I'm glad it was a tight and snappy 45 minutes and not a double album.
I didn't much care for this back in the 70s and 80s. But id only heard the big hits. Getting the chance to hear the whole album let me know I was right to not have listened to it.
That cover and Album name is certainly a choice for this music... Anyhow, it's fine, if not rather exhausting.
Cringy, raunchy, goofy, corny. Its an impressive, amazing disaster.
Cannot help but find this quite silly overall, like a parody version of a hit rock opera hiding under heavy metal aesthetics… in fairness, I’m sure it’s very iconic and influential in the world of rock operas, so I’m sure its originality within the genre contributes to that feeling, but I’m just not sold on how operatic it seems to think it is… harmless but didn’t do it for me.
Twas alright
2,5
Meh
inherit death like a birthright
I expected/wanted to like this more than I ultimately did.
When Elton John got a bit of American testosterone and even more theatrical bombast.
Kantta myöten naurettavan teatraalinen ja överijuustoinen. Nimikappaleesta ihan tykkäsin. Ja myönnetään, kyllähän siinä jotain Bruce-kaikuja kuulee. 2.5?
It is all big and epic and fun, but it is so much so that it starts to border on overboard. Doesn't really feel personal or authentic enough to become great
Bat Out of Hell is Epic, dramatic music. Not really my thing.
I don’t get the hype.
Paradise on the dashboard lights has to be everyones favourite Kareoke song! Amazing. A lot of filler on this album though and it only has 7 very long tracks!! Favourite song: Bat out of hell is a great song. Least favourite: Most of the rest of the album Album artwork: Fantastic cover
I refuse to listen to this. I know all the famous tracks already
First song was good then it was a rock opera and no pinball wizard
Not for me, sounded like a rock opera
Could have sworn he sang half of these in Rocky Horror Picture Show
Oke, guilty. Extra sterretje 5/10 Highlights Paradise You took the words right out of my mouth
Ewwwww
it was cool
It was fine, don't think it really deserves to be on the list but I enjoyed it. Felt like a bruce springsteen knock off for a couple songs, overall enjoyable listen but nothing too much to take from it.
Not my cup of tea.
I don't like the "musical" production.
Totally overblown boogie rock, as expected. Musical theater. Don't hate it, but will not listen.
It helped a little to pretend like I was listening to the soundtrack from a cheesy musical
I get that the melodrama is kind of the point, but that doesn't make this any good to listen to. I'll always prefer to remember him as Robert Paulson, anyway.
Album by bitch tits. Definitely an interesting album. Was more like a ballad story style album. Bat out of hell was probably my favorite of the songs. Not my usual genre. 2.5 stars for me.
Bob has bitch tits. Was hoping for more out of this but it ended up being a bit too "rockera" for me. Some songs just sounded like a worse Elton John.
Interessante. Musical. Dinâmico. Lembra um pouco Queen.
That was something
Better than I expected. Theatrical but fun
His vocal range is pretty impressive. The style of music and instrumentation remind me of Bruce Springsteen. The skits are a little weird. “Paradise by the dashboard light” was a banger.
C Bat Out Of Hell 3 You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) 3 Heaven Can Wait 3 All Revved Up With No Place To Go 3 Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad 2 Paradise By The Dash Board Light 1 For Crying Out Loud 3 This was pretty boring, but for some reason I expected screamy rock.
The Jam, Suicide Mink Deville, Kraftwerk, The Modern Lovers, Bee Gees...).
Sometimes I feel quite disconnected to the rest of culture. This was in the charts for some insanely long period and I have no idea why? There is nothing on it that’s really stand out and it’s quirky enough not to be middle of the road. enough to be a coffee table album. Was it just the cover?
Avausraita ihan ok - siihen se sit jäiki
not for me
You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth All Revved Up with Nowhere to Go Paradise By the Dashboard Light For Crying Out Loud I can tell it’s good quality and well put together. I’m honestly just not a fan.
I prefer his later work
Nothing that really catches my ear... the rock compositions are rather forgetable
I respect the ambition to create this, but don't enjoy listening to it
If a 14 year old boy after a breakup with his first gf was magically put into a full grown man’s body overnight and made an album it’d be this
Well you can't say Loaf didn't bring the energy, but it sounds like some horny reject kidnapped the E-Street Band and made them make a musical theater album for some reason. I'll probably never listen to this album on purpose again. RIP to Loaf tho. Gotta appreciate the passion. Seemed like a fun guy and that personality counts for a lot and clearly resonated with enough people. Shoutout to Jim Steinman who wrote the whole damn album.
Theatrical
I had a traumatic karaoke experience where I was forced into listening to the entirety of two white peoples in hawiiaian shirts singing paradise by the dashboard light. I’ve protested listening to meat loaf ever since and no I didn’t listen to this album but I can imagine it’s a two.
Hard to follow right after Illinois. But this album had an average song length of almost 7 minutes. Thats way too crazy. As I was listening to the last song I thought to myself, “Ok that was a pleasant ending, seemed shorter than some of the other songs though.” When I looked at the time there was still 5 and a half minutes left. Insane. I found it hard to stay engaged. Conceptually it was interesting with each song seeming to have multiple parts/acts, but it just wasn’t entertaining enough to carry it.
The whole operatic rock thing was never really for me, but there were still parts where I was thinking this was a great album. There were even more moments where I was wanting the song to just be over already. I also could do without the couple bits of dialogue added in. All that said, the musical ability and skill is evident and the ballads were excellent. I don’t know how I feel about this one. I don’t think it’s a two but I don’t know that I can justify a three. I’ll sleep on it and decide in the morning.
Reminds me of that puppet vampire rock opera in Forgetting Sarah Marshall
2.2 Pretty much as commercial as music can get.
Hopefully this doesn't bring on another Springsteen conversation. I do not like meatloaf. All his songs are 80% too long too.
Just not digging it.
Theatrical, over the top, songs are very long too. However, a couple of them were lovely. Interesting arrangements. Would listen again in moderation.
Feels very self indulgent. All the songs are far too long and it is all a bit boring.
Country rock vibes, even though I thought this would be metal Couple of good songs but bad otherwise
This album did not age well for me.
Weird music, weird guy. I didn’t make it very far through this and have 0 interest in continuing or finishing. My time is too valuable for this.
All american cool people's high school musical
It's not bad and I do understand that people like it, but this is not for me.
theres definitely some women in their 60s bopping to this
is this rock?
To me this feels like Bruce Springsteen for theatre nerds. I don't necessarily think the music is bad but I think this is more of a me issue. A good operatic power ballad is fine but every song feels to hit those notes.
Not a huge fan of Meat Loaf.
Not Jim Steinman's best work.
Disappointing, I really like ”I would do anything for love” but this is much more mellow.
Couldn’t finish it. Too upbeat and pop-y for me to enjoy. Developing an understanding that I like my rock either hard, sad, or camp?
Hilariously camp panto (Campomime?) A theatre nerd's second-hand idea of what rock n' roll might feel like. There something rural about it. Something virginal. Maybe that's why it's popular? The sort of gear that's quite fun if it pops up on the radio but I'm unlikely to ever seek out. Does it have a sense of irony? I reckon not. Does that matter? 🤷🏻♂️
So & so Not very impres
Sounded like rock opera. Perhaps I don't understand or get the brilliance but I did not enjoy it.
Aside from the title track, I didn't really connect with this album.
