Pretty good fun. I guess i do like Bowie afterall
Strange and compelling with sharp elbows
Catchy
Bastante buena faceta de bowie loa disfrute mucho
Great!
For an album I love, there's a shit ton of smooth ass saxophone on this.
Excellent record. He really does have range. This record reminds me of those really unique singer songwriter voices like Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Nik Cave etc. Who might lean on theatrical or blues type tropes sometimes but have a really unique delivery throughout. Rocks away as a great car record. Time seems special
Good

Every time I listen to a new Bowie album I think, “no wait this is his best one”
I feel like after the masterpiece that was Ziggy Stardust, Bowie decided he needed to one up it and leant into chaos. This isn’t as polished as his previous two albums, but it contains some of his highest highs. I adore Drive In Saturday, the Prettiest Star is lovely, and the rest of it is just good hard rock.
This album just makes me happy every time. Mike Garson's piano runs grabbing keys by the handful. Mick Ronson's guitar and the two sax players all honking like they're in a freeway traffic jam across America. One of my 8 or so very favorite Bowie albums in no particular order.
5 Like this even better than ziggy stardust I think
Very very good album, added a few songs to the playlist. The prettiest star stood out with the guitar solo
An iconic album with songs that are a symbol of these times
This is a Bowie album that stands out for the sum of the entire album rather than a few memorable songs.
Pretty great, and I never loved David Bowie that much.
Energetic
4 stars for being a good, not great, Bowie album. But then Panic in Detroit drops in and now we're talking 5 again.
Art
I love it!!!^^
There’s just so much great Bowie music and I’m not familiar with a lot of it. This is another great album.
One of my favorites.
Cool work, could categorize it as glam rock or rock'n'roll, but it has this specific Bowie gentleness as a main feature. It's theatrical, poetic and fun, the whole album stimulates good mood.
5/5 always.
music is love
Really enjoyed this. The vocals complimented the music so well
Bowie again! Love him so much
The first Bowie album I ever bought. I still think it's one of his best.
Excellent work. Both piano and guitar driven songs to keep it fresh. A ballad or two. Perfect Bowie
Maybe my favorite piano performance on a rock album ever
10/10. Who will love a lad insane?
Another 5/5 by Bowie. An incredible glam rock album that borders on hard rock at times. This man is probably the greatest singer songwriter of all time.
Yes. Own it, love it. Panic in Detroit isn't great and the closer is a touch overwrought for me, but the rest of this beauty more than makes up for it.
Never go wrong with Bowie
Great album. No skips, every song is Bowie at his glam best. Drive-in Saturday is one of my favourite Bowie songs ever.
Simple perfection.
Never heard of it; how is it possible for such a great album to go unsung? If this is insanity, I don’t want to be sane.
Though i prefer Ziggy Stardust of the two. This is still an undoubted classic. It ramps up the dynamism and intrigue up to 100 Prefer the scaled back version of The Prettiest Star. good on earphones. Imagine being around when this came out. Itd blow yer mind.
Another great album by Bowie. The only song I don't love happens to be the Rolling Stones' cover (and it's still pretty good). And some songs are real classics.
No need to listen to this, an absolute favourite for 40 odd years
I mean, bowie
InSane Cock, no notes
dude this shit was a 10/10, 9 times out of 10 bowie is a banger that you will never skip.
liked all the songs, one of the better Bowie albums
goat
another fire one from the man himself
Loved the complexities in the music
LOVE
It’s just Bowie ! I will always give him a 5 / - not my favourite Bowie album but still amazing
Great album
Incredible range for an album with only 10 songs. I guess albums used to be that length but now they're all 13 tracks minimum for some reason. Favorite songs: Cracked Actor; Lady Grinning Soul. Real rock and roll.
A few steps down from Iggy and the spiders from mars but a few steps down from the top of Everest is still pretty damn high.
I liked this! Very theatrical!
Just hit after hit. Entire album slaps (apart from Aladdin Sane). Can’t believe I haven’t listened to it before - makes me glad I am doing this !!
That iconic album cover. You can't talk about Aladdin Sane without starting with the photo that represents it. Bowie never looked more like a being from outer space than here: eyes closed, pale silver and white skin, red hair, the lightning bolt going through one eye. I'm convinced that this was Bowie's true form, and he'd cover the lightning bolt with makeup to appear more human. It's the most iconic image in a string of iconic images that represent Bowie over time, and potentially one of the best album covers of all time. This album finds Bowie in a transitional period, with Ziggy's era coming to an end. And that's what makes everything so interesting. There's a schizoid feel to the songs here: glam rock meets avant-garde jazz. Bowie brings in elements of experimentation to deliberately derail rock 'n' roll standards. It kicks off in proper glam rock territory with "Watch That Man" making it obvious that Bowie was listening to a LOT of Rolling Stones at the time. Tracks like "Panic in Detroit" and "The Prettiest Star" keep that glam rock swagger going, before "The Jean Genie" arrives and completely steals the show. Bowie starts to mess with things early. Even by today's standards, the title track is quite out there, and Mike Garson's famous piano solo shows that Bowie was already leaning fully into freeform jazz. "Drive-In Saturday" is a proper Bowie classic. Blending sci-fi noises, doo-wop, jazzy brass, and retro futurism, it sounds nostalgic and alien at the same time. "Cracked Actor" is massively underrated. The chord progressions feel strange and slightly wrong, giving the song an uneasy sharpened edge under all the bluesy swagger. You never see this listed in "best of Bowie" compilations, which is a serious crime. And then there's "Time", which might be the album's weirdest and best moment. Full-on piano cabaret, slowly building until Mick Ronson's guitar comes crashing in. That guitar sound is amazing: a sinister sound that mimics laughing, almost feeling like it's mocking us. Only Bowie could turn a madcap song like this into one of the highlights of the album. It all adds up to something far more interesting than a simple glam rock record. Bowie invites chaos into rock by incorporating elements of the world of avant-garde and jazz directly into the core of these songs. The image on the cover tells you what you're getting into. Glam rock on the surface, something stranger and much more interesting underneath.
Bowie at his best ❤️
I like it a lot
Bueno
A new album added to my favourites! I absolutely love David Bowie but I haven’t listened to this album much so I’m glad I took the time to deeply listen to it
I like David Bowie.
it would be hard for me to give david bowie anything but 5-stars, especially aladdin sane
Too long to feature majority bangers
Great rock and roll and pop tunes, love the quirky moments of bowie with the piano or vocal harmonies
This is one of my favourite Bowie albums.
An easy five stars for my favourite artist. He was still loving his rock n roll, but beginning to experiment (again) in the company of fabulous artists like Mike Garson. I've never been keen on this version of Let's Spend The Night Together but apart from that, it's all fantastic.
Quite possibly my favourite album of all time.
Classic
337/1089 - I took one two hour lesson with the piano player on this album a few years ago. It was really insightful and I think put me on a good track in my musical growth, thank you Mike Garson. I've defintiely warmed up to Bowie over the course of this listening project, I might revisit Blackstar. This one is a bit more adventurous and fun than Ziggy Stardust and I like it for that. Sorta like the progression of Rundgren on Something/Anything to A Wizard, A True Star.
Wonderful and original Bowie. 💜
This album has vibe of 2000’s romcom when female lead is starting her life from the very beginning again. Really loved the song ‘The Prettiest Star’. The album itself was masterpiece. Would definitely listen to this album again. 9/10
oh hell yes just reallly love this era of Bowie, these songs hold up so well for me
Chaotic. Kaleidoscope. Whippets. Wild Poppies. Shattered glass
The perfect Bowie album to introduce someone to Bowie.
yeah I get the hype
A transformação é fantástica e esplêndida. Algo me atrai fortemente quando aquele piano insano e desafinado começa a tocar, pra mim é impagável. 5/5
Great album one of my favourites
Remember when David Bowie invented music? What a day.
I boomerang with this album between it being one of my fav and underrated Bowie albums, to thinking it’s one of his weaker ones. Drive-In Saturday & Time are two of my fav Bowie songs ever. But there’s one or two filler songs in there. Still brilliant though.
One of Bowies best.
This is 8/9 from Bowie and it’s another cracking album. The only song I wasn’t overly fussed on was The Jean Genie. It wasn’t terrible or anything, just weaker than the rest of the album. I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of it though. Ziggy Stardust was my first Bowie album and nothing has been able to dislodge it as my favourite so I will be interested to see if Blackstar tops it. Top Track - Time
All time listening must.
Superb
Bowie always gets 5 stars. A GOAT. (That is, One of the GOATs).
Bowie at very close to the peak of his powers here. What a run this is with Hunky Dory and Ziggy! It starts extremely strongly, with the title track and Drive In Saturday massive hits. The second half is a bit of a Best Of really, with Jean Genie, Prettiest Star and Let's Spend the Night Together. Because they aren't top echelon David singles, there is a bit of flatness about hearing them like this in a weird way, even though they're all very good indeed. Still, whatever, five stars and we move!
Perfection!
Ca. det femte beste Bowie-albumet, men det beste coveret.
10/10, except the piano in Aladdin Sane, too many plinky's to relisten to for me. Time, Let's Spend the Night Together all got a slot in various playlists
Was very nice to revisit this one. Back in the day I had a phone card in the name of Aladdin Sane. Phone cards. lol
Title track alone is brilliant. Bunch of fantastic bangers in there too. More than just Ziggy pt. 2 to me.
I recently finished listening to David Bowie's discography and ranked them all, I believe I put this one at number 5. This really is one of my favorite Bowie albums, it has a playful charm that not many of his other albums have. A lot of the songs here are also really fun to sing along too, a lot of great melodies. I also really enjoy the theatrical elements of this album, especially in the song Time. High 5!!!
Best ever
At first I was dissapointed to get a Bowie Album so soon again, but Aladdin Sane won me over song by song. If the quality is as high as this record, they might all be Bowie records and I wouldn't mind. Peak.
legend
Some of his best, and that is saying a great deal. Mesmerizing.
I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't enjoy this.
It's not my favorite from this era, but this era punches most of my buttons.
I hadn't listened to this album in its entirety in years...I forgot how fantastic it was. I'd probably give it a 4.5 but since we can't do half stars then I'm going to give it a full 5.
Might be my Bowie bias giving this 5 stars since it is probably weaker than some of his other work but I still just absolutely love this one, can’t give it any less the 5 stars
As good as it gets. Loved this one. 5/5
Ziggy does America, and boy does he ever do it! On this album, Bowie extends the sounds of his preceding glam rock opus into a whirlwind tour of America, through the lens of hard rock, blues, and just a wee touch of jazz, courtesy of Mike Garson's beautiful and yet atonal piano playing. Another delightful collection of songs from one of the greats!
Certified banger all the way through
This was a really interesting album for me, considering I've never listened to earlier Bowie outside of singles. This is truly art, rock, with complex arrangements and very interesting choices of keys and time signatures. I especially enjoyed the piano on the title track and also how the styles switch from basic rock to something proggy and otherworldly, so unique. I can't help but think of influences when I hear Bowie during this phase of his career, so many artists cop this s***.
An iconic artist's most iconic album cover. With Aladdin Sane, Bowie puts on a new mask and switches space operas for pure rock 'n' roll. Gone is the cosmic psychedelic sound. Instead, we get bouncy pianos, electric guitar licks, and even some blues harmonica in "The Jean Genie". Bowie seems almost possessed by the spirit of Lil' Richard as he pours his soul into some high speed glam rock. This album may not have all the hits, but it's a clear indicator that Bowie isn't a one trick pony. Also just realizing that Aladdin Sane in a play on words (a lad, insane). Wild.
I love this Bowie persona, not an ultimate favourite but its not easy to compare them
It's great. "Cracked Actor" "The Prettiest Star" "The Jean Genie" and "Lady Grinning Soul" were my faves on here.
A step down from Ziggy Stardust, and really weird in places, but still an incredible album.
Love it. Love him.
For some reason I thought I didn’t like this album. Watch That Man is one of those all time greatest opening songs but I thought I dropped off after that. I was wrong. It’s all killer. RIP Mick Ronson 5/ 5
A brilliant listen. Another of the things white dukes re-inventions nailed it
Muy buenas canciones: Drive-In Saturday, Cracked Actor, The Prettiest Star, Let's Spend the Night Together, The Jean Genie y Lady Grinnin Soul
10
Awesome
David Bowie is not one of my "go to" artists, but there is no doubting he has produced some great songs. This album contains several great songs ...Aladins Sane . Cracked Actor .. Drive-in Saturday Not to mention the exceptional Jean Genie. Well worth the listen
So good. It’s hard for me to choose my favorite track after just one listen. But definitely between lady grinning soul, time, and Aladdin sane. The piano is amazing
My favorite album from David's glam era. Even those tracks that didn't become big hits are ICONIC for me.
Yes
DAVID BOWIE
Bowie makes art that happens to be shaped as music
Perhaps because I read the lyrics at the same time. I liked this album a lot.
Bowies GOAT era
Watch That Man - 8/10 Aladdin Sane - 9.5/10 Drive-In-Saturday - 8/10 Panic In Detroit - 8.5/10 Cracked Actor - 9/10 Time - 8.75/10 The prettiest star - 8/10 Lets spend the night together - 8/10 The jean genie - 9/10 Lady grinning soul - 8/10
One of Bowie's best
Another great early Bowie album. Some of it sounds like poetry , others straight and of course there is The Jean Genie.
Great Album!
Day577 - such an iconic album cover and bowie’s a genius for sending the ziggy persona out with a bang
Nice
Loved it! Listened to it twice in a row :-).
Brilliant Album. Forgot how good it is.
Is David! Is Goid!
My favourite Bowie album and a LOVE a lot of his stuff. Because he'd had huge success with Ziggy he was able to test the boundaries and came up with a masterpiece.
I love David Bowie def gonna listen to more
This is my favorite Bowie album....narrowly edges out TRaFoZSatSfM. Side A is perfect. Album cover is iconic. Some of the shit gets a little out there, see breakdowns on "Aladdin Sane" and "Time", but they get reined in.
Biased, always enjoyed ❤️
One word......masterpiece
I enjoyed the pace changes, the talking was too low and too frequent.
What a wonderful album. There is nothing to dislike on this. And with gems like Time, The Pretties Star, and Lady Grinning Soul, how could this be less than a 5?
When i was a kid... i heard some cool songs on the radio... like Space Oddity, and Changes... and the DJ would say that was David Bowie... and he wold pronounce it like "BOO ey"... like the knife... lol... anyway... we would all later know it was pronounced "BO EE"... imagine an 11 year old boy loveing those songs, then seeing him on "The Midnight Special" and watching him perform in complete drag, including a corset... i had no idea what i was watching... but, it sure sounded great... anyway... the album opens up with a rave rockin' GEM, "Watch That Man"... the rest of the album is a rock n roll experience... "Drive In Saturday"... "Cracked Actor"... "Time"... "The Prettiest Star"... a raucous cover of The Stones' "Let's Spend the Night Together"... and the now standard "The Jean Genie"... Five Stars.
The foundational text
Enjoyed it thoroughly. Loved the jazz piano that infiltrates several of the songs.
One of my favorite albums by my favorite artist
Such a great character and album overall. Perfect
Great album was never a big fan of Bowie until I heard hunky dory then was hooked on him.
Wowzer gee, I just love Bowie.
The title song is not my favorite and goes a bit too contemporary jazz for my taste. But the rest of the album is just magic. That heavy rift of cracked actor switch into the rest of the song is magnificent and so different to the rest of the album it really stands out.
Enjoyed it.
I think this was the first David Bowie album I ever listened to. Listen back to it it is really quite evident how strong of a oubting it is. Quality rockers throughout. Great guitar by Ronson. Bowie had a bit of a lull in the next couple of releases with pin-ups and diamond dogs but this is a classic.
So many creative and chaotic sounds! Great album.
Classic Bowie.
I'm a fair weathered Bowie fan for never listening to this album front to back. Musically, this is a 4 Star album. Solid songs, but no career defining hits. Culturally, however, this is a very very important album, if not just for the iconic album cover/lightning bolt. Plus I'm a Bowie simp. 5 stars.
Unbelievably good piano by Mike Garson on a great great album.
I listen to this, I think, “OK, Lloyd, you can now go out and accomplish pretty much anything you want to.” Decades and hundreds of listens later, I’m no closer to understanding it. But I still LOVE it!
I’m not necessarily a huge Bowie fan. But I did think this album was really good. Interesting music—nice vocals.
Buena
Classic Bowie. A great combination of rock and pop, and a total joy to listen to. I've heard that there are a lot of Bowie albums that will come up on this list, and I look forward to each and every one of them.
Aladdin Sane is Bowie at his most confident. After the success of Ziggy, Aladdin was one of his “rockiest” albums, more guitar/bass driven, less experimental. It’s also his most memorable cover. I don’t think there is a bad song on here. Key tracks for me is the Elton John-esque Let’s Spend the Night Together, and Prettiest Star, though Jean Genie was a favorite too. I was kind of bummer I couldn’t go home and listen to this on vinyl. Damn work!
One of my first albums and what an album...this was my growing up. An album that I feel i know note for note! The man was a genius
it’s 70s david bowie
An icon and a masterpiece of an album. The whole is more than the parts, some songs are amazing ("Aladdin Sane", "Drive-in Saturday"), others very cool ("The Jean Genie", "Let's Spend the night together") others are great tracks with the 70's glam vibe. The piano arrangements and solo on the title track is the ultimate piano performance ever. The record cover art is unique and has been forever replicated and imitated continuously. As a collection of songs, plus the aesthetics of the cover, plus avoiding formulas. This record deserves acknowledge and a top rating.
What an album
I find David Bowie's voice incredibly nostalgic so I can't give an unbiased take but I loved this album.
A lad insane. This is an incredible album!
Tremendous - want to relisten many times. Don't think I've ever listened to a Bowie album front to back.
I get the argument that this is a lesser version of Ziggy Stardust, but if you’d never heard another Bowie album, wouldn’t you think this was all killer, no filler?
Crazy vocals and beautiful sax plays. One of the best bowie albums
A favorite and an easy five.
Bowie is one of my favourites since I was 13yr old. An incredible being. RIP
Нью-Йорк - надихнив на написання Watch That Man, а Лос-Анджелес - Cracked Actor. Ziggy Stardust.
David Bowie does weird in the best possible way. I love him and he’s an icon. My favorite song off this album is the prettiest star. Maybe it’s because we’ve been given shit albums recently or maybe it’s because my parents named their dog after him and I’m biased or maybe I’m just feeling generous but this album gets my first 5 star rating
Instant classic!!!
🧑🎤
Some crazy music, I loved it. Title track was maybe a bit too crazy but I had fun and it was some impressive piano regardless which I appreciate
The thin white duke almost never lets you down. At least until we entered the 1980s… This is pure genius
Iconic cover and title track
Love this Album, it's in my regular rotation after all these years. In my top 5 Bowie albums
Djöfull er þetta ógeðslega góð plata frá mínum heimsins besta.
If anyone else made this album it would be a full 5, but it's a 4.5 because I know there are multiple better albums in his catalog. Also, I always thought the Aladdin Sane persona was forced. Ziggy Stardust was an actual concept album, Aladdin Sane just feels like an attempt to recatch that lightning in a bottle. I do love this album though, so much that I am relistening to it this morning even though I just listened to it a week or two ago after the last Bowie album.
Fantastic Glam album. This for me was almost more enjoyable than Ziggy Stardust, as I've heard that album many times (because I own it on vinyl) but never bothered to listen to this one. This is proof I need to check out more of Bowie's work because this is fantastic. The hooks and lyrics and cool instrumentation are out of this world I love everything about it. Bowie is such a creative musician and has a unique voice that I quite enjoy. Mick Ronson's guitar on this is also spectacular, I say he does a better job on this album than Ziggy, although the songwriting is not quite as good here. I don't want to compare it too much to another album though because it is fantastic in its own right. Still 5 stars too. Favorite Song: Watch That Man Least Favorite Song: Let's Spend the Night Together
Fav: The Prettiest Star Least Fav: Panic In Detroit This list wants me to be a Bowie fan so badly and it’s working
I admire Zigmund typically, but I’m not usually the biggest fan, because sometimes I think he goes for interesting over enjoyable, and then misses the mark pretty widely. This one’s amazing, though. Clever, multi-layered, unusual…but also the songs themselves are just durned great. I even like the Stones cover!
Nice!
Classic Bowie
Bowie's Ziggy Stardust period spanned four albums. After the first one launched to rock star status, he was faced with the classic musician's dilemma: how to follow up the breakthrough album. He was torn between doing Ziggy Part 2 and changing styles again. He ended up doing something in between. Aladdin Sane was partly a new character, but really was an adaptation of Ziggy. For some parts of the album, you'd be forgiven for dismissing it as a continuation of the narrative. Bowie called the album "Ziggy Stardust Goes to America" and there's a lot more to that idea than it may sound. America is a massive influence here and marked the beginning of a long fascination with the country. People may have found Ziggy strange when he landed in England, but he first experienced dizzying culture shock himself when he came to the US. Not only was Bowie touring extensively to his newfound audience there, but he worked during this period on albums from Lou Reed and The Stooges. This is all reflected back in an album obsessed with stardom, movies, racial tension, and urban decay. The music also draws on various American styles, like doo-wop and jazz. While it's still predominantly a glam rock album, it veers into area that other glam bands would never have dared. Particularly important here was the addition of pianist Mike Garson, whose works really shines on several tracks. The title track alone begins like a smoke filled jazz lounge, and deteriotates into a paranoid breakdown. The whole album is much darker, heavier and more experimental than it's predecessor. Save for a few tracks, it's also less accessible, but much more accomplished. The biggest criticism is the unnecessary Rolling Stones' cover "Let's Spend the Night Together". It doesn't quite fit the rest of the album and could have been swapped with the non-album track, "John, I'm Only Dancing". But it's a very small issue for an otherwise revoluntary album. This the moment when Bowie proved himself as a force who could continue to evolve.
brilliant follow-up to Ziggy
Iconic look, iconic album, iconic piano in the title track. David was absolutely on fire during this time.
Love Bowie's sound :)
Strong glam rock album. The piano playing is the highlight here, specifically on Aladdin Sane and Time, but there's some fantastic guitar work as well and everything is presented with Bowie's usual boundless energy that infects all of his music. This is a bona fide classic.
Might be my favourite Bowie album in all honesty. It's like Ziggy Stardust but with more of a heavy edge.
Erinomaista tämä hevimpi Bowiekin. A Lad Insane indeed. 5/5
GOAT. Enough said.
As always, this was great. I had heard a few of the songs before, and Aladdin Sane is just -- I don't know. I can't love it because it's just so atonal in the middle bit with all the random keyboard fiddling. But otherwise it's a perfectly Bowie collection of well written, sung, recorded and produced music. Five stars.
This is the sixth Bowie album I have gotten on the list, and each one has been a joy to listen to. I could easily see each of them being someone's favorite album of all time, and I am quickly realizing he is one of my favorite artists of all time. This definitely isn't my favorite Bowie album (that honor probably lies with Ziggy Stardust), but I still enjoyed each track - particularly "Time."
Top 3 Bowie for me.
We love Alladin Sane ❤️
Didn't expect to love this one as much as I did! Following up 'Ziggy Stardust' must have been tough, but this was satisfying as its sequel. The album offers great variety, and the songs are grittier than the previous overall. In contrast to that, there are beautiful and meditative songs, such as 'Time' and, my personal favorite, 'Lady Grinning Soul'. Great day for a Bowie fan.
I have rediscovered my all time favourite album. I get shivers down my spine when Drive in Saturday starts and The Prettiest Star is beautiful. Not a bad song on this album. After Bowie died I couldn’t listen to his music but now I will. ❤️
Amazing! No stranger to this. Every track brilliant.
4.5
I actually prefer this to the Ziggy Stardust that came before it. Incredible songs, some even camp (Time, which is my favourite on the album), or melodramatic (Lady Grinning Soul). This is glorious.
Classic glam Bowie, nuff said
The energy is just, glamorous and sexy and dangerous and cheeky. Drugs, stardom, the future. Bowie <3.
Top 10 greatest albums ever
Good stuff
David Bowie – Aladdin Sane Aladdin Sane opens with two tracks dominated by Mike Garson’s extraordinary piano work. On the title track, Garson delivers an extended solo that veers into avant-garde jazz, and it’s clear he’s having an absolute blast. Opener Watch That Man is a driving piece of rock and roll, steeped in a Stones-inspired swagger, complete with fantastic backing vocals and bold horns. While Watch That Man channels Bowie’s love of the Rolling Stones, Drive-In Saturday pays homage to ’50s doo-wop with a futuristic twist. Bowie doesn’t sound like he’s imitating; rather, he embodies the style so naturally that it feels effortless. It’s the difference between someone speaking a language conversationally and someone fluent in it. I love how the song closes with those smooth, repeating backing vocals while Bowie lets loose over the top. Panic in Detroit is another standout, driven by a hypnotic Bo Diddley rhythm and elevated by Aynsley Dunbar’s percussion, which was added after Bowie and drummer Woody Woodmansey clashed over the original drum arrangement. The gritty guitar riff complements the urgency of the song, giving it a relentless energy. In contrast, Cracked Actor is rawer, almost stripped-back rock with a bluesy edge. While it has a certain bite, it feels a little too straightforward for me, lacking the complexity or flair of the album’s other tracks. Time is where Bowie dives into theatrical cabaret, complete with surreal lyrics that make you pause (“You’re not alone, you’re watching yourself but you’re too unfair”). Garson’s piano work shines once again, adding a bohemian flair to the track that is nothing short of captivating. The Prettiest Star is a gentle ballad at its core, but Mick Ronson’s expressive guitar tone and David Sanborn’s jaunty saxophone elevate it to something special. It’s also nicely paired with Let’s Spend the Night Together, a raucous and unapologetically energetic take on the Rolling Stones classic, filled with frenetic piano and pounding drums. Unfortunately, The Jean Genie doesn’t leave as strong an impression for me. While it’s a Bowie staple, the bluesy riff feels a bit too repetitive and lacking the inventiveness that defines the rest of the album. Then there’s Lady Grinning Soul, the breathtaking closer. It’s Bowie at his most poetic and dramatic, blending lush piano arrangements with soaring vocals. Garson’s intricate playing and Bowie’s impassioned delivery make for an unforgettable finish. Bowie has always been an artist I’ve admired more than loved—his genius is undeniable, but many of his works have been hit or miss for me. With Aladdin Sane, though, this is Bowie I get. He’s audacious, versatile, and completely at home in every style he explores here. I absolutely loved this. Standout Track: Lady Grinning Soul Score: 5/5
Fantastic album. Love the raw guitar and bass on "Cracked Actor" and the chaotic piano on the title track.
Wonderful
Garaon’s piano takes this album to the next level.
First album post Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust so first album recorded post becoming a star and Bowie immediately starts experimenting more and more. This is a Top Bowie album and that is really saying something.
I haven’t heard every Bowie album, but this is near the top three of the list. Sidenote- it’s wild how some artists are so overrepresented on this list that you can create ranked sublists of just their albums.
5 out of 5. Another album where I can't say anything that hasn't been said already.
Amazing time in Bowie’s career
Positively surprised. An artist I thought I didn't like without good reason. But the album was quite easy to listen to
Can’t go wrong with a bit of Bowie :)
Classic!
I really enjoyed the diversity in the tracks on this album. A lot of these songs I was not familiar with and Bowie's creative and eclectic vocal prowess is on full display in every track. Listening to this album was a very enjoyable experience for me.
As far as Bowie goes this was really good. Maybe my favorite Bowie yet. Great album
Fiiiire in contention for fav bowie album wow fuhhh
Great album. Love Bowie
Amazing
One of my all-time favourites. The guitars are so chunky. The ballads are graceful and elegant. This might be my favourite Bowie album. Lady Grinning Soul is too good.
Is it pronounced “Bowie” or “Bowie”?
He went on bit of an unbroken run of genius albums, didn't he?
One of his best. 5/5
Bowie Banger (9.95) ★★★★½
Excellent follow-up to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Bowie gets a little less glammy and a little more rockin'. Highlights include "Panic in Detroit", "Cracked Actor", "The Jean Genie", "Drive-In Saturday" and a rockin' cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together". 5 stars.
After taking a short break from listening to a new album every day (I may have some slight commitment issues), David Bowie made it pretty easy to get back into the swing of things. I really loved the dissonance of the piano in the title track, it's jarring enough to make you pay attention to the music but not so offputting that you want to skip to the next song (which can be a fine line to walk). My favourites were Drive-In Saturday and Cracked Actor but that's because I'm a sucker for anything written in 6/8 time. The rhythm of both of those songs made me wanna get up on stage and dance like Miles Teller in Top Gun Maverick (you know the scene I'm talking about on the beach). Time sort of went a bit Phantom of the Opera which again I loved and rounding it out with Lady Grinning Soul was just **chef's kiss**.
Bowie… nuff said
Yes
Rounding a 9 up to a 10, honestly really good and consistent album, no issues at all, Bowie being good what he's good at
Y'know, I can't say I really dug this album the first couple of times I heard it. I'unno, putting in contrast against the two Bowie had released before this—HUNKY DORY and gawddam **ZIGGY STARDUST**—mixed with the fact that, for some reason, I just couldn't get a handle on it... That's why, at the same time, I was both looking forward to giving this thing a second chance and worrying I still wouldn't find anything to speak about. So, I wanna thank this four-star review of the album I found on this website that said, simply, "Elton John if he was edgy." And it all clicked. Like, this is glam. This is heavy glam rock—why didn't I hear that before? Holy shit, it's heavy glam, and it's **so good**. All the heavy guitars and the melodies and the horns and the background singers and... Well, the everything. And there's so much everything, goodness. And I wanted to say it didn't have the same sense of theatrical greatness that the last two albums had, but then "Time" happened and shut me right up. If I can reference another review, a negative one this time: it **does** sound like a rock opera. And that, on top of the glam, is why I feel so happy giving this thing a complete 5/5. Which kind of feels strange? I mean, check my history; I didn't even give HUNKY DORY a 5, and I said that was my favorite Bowie album. So, is this my favorite now? I mean, for as great as I've found ALADDIN SANE to be, it doesn't have "Changes", "Oh! You Pretty Things", "Queen Bitch", or "Life On Mars?". I'm not sure if any individual song on here quite matches up, so for that reason alone, I'll keep saying HUNKY DORY's my favorite Bowie album. But as a complete album experience, until I get to hear ZIGGY STARDUST again, ALADDIN SANE will hafta be happy with second place.
Just some absolutely exceptional tunes, which just goes to show how much Bowie was on a roll with the writing during his Golden Years (ba dum tss). A very solid 5, maybe even a low 5.5 if that was possible.
I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll generously bump up to a 5 – this is the second time I’ve given a 5 to a David Bowie album. I was sort of wavering between a 4 and a 5, but I just enjoyed this enough to give it a bump – I do think it doesn’t quite get to a 5, but it’s certainly higher than a 4. This is David Bowie’s “American” album, and it’s rather obvious in the instrumental influence – gone are the days of ch-ch-ch-changes and all that. I’m exaggerating a bit, but this is really unlike his other albums we’ve gotten so far; we’re talking about watching porn at drive-in theaters, doing coke, and getting head in Hollywood. This guy’s a rockstar now, or at least Aladdin Sane is. I think the piano really stands out on this album – I’m a sucker for a good piano, but I can’t say I’ve ever really heard it used as a storytelling device for a sort of insanity meter. It’s present throughout almost every track, and it really decides the tone that Bowie just sort of follows. Obviously, there’s guitar, horns, some great percussion throughout, but the piano just cuts through like a knife on all of them. Aladdin Sane is the standout example of this – the smashing of the damn keyboard makes for a rather visceral tone rarely expressed around this time. Ultimately, I think whatever he was going for here, he completely succeeded – if this is his “American” album like I think it is, then it’s rocking, it’s gritty, and it’s more American than Young Americans was. It’s a super fun listen, that does dive a bit into what I suspect is a genuine growing insanity from Bowie at the time, but he channels that energy into a really fun rock album. I do kinda wish there was a more bombastic Life on Mars-esque track here (unless you count "Time"), but regardless, I liked it. Totally fine with bumping it up to a 5.
Absolutely golden.
Amazing. Every track a banger. All the opulence and excess I want from glam rock. I'm glad this came up pretty early in my 1001 Albums journey because it made me recalibrate my stars.
We’re all Aladdin Sane. Nearly every Bowie album is five stars for me dawg.
I’ve heard the name of this album for years and only once I actually listened to it did I understand the pun in the title. Go me. This is the third Bowie album I’ve had, and I think I like it the best. It starts off hot, cools a little with the title track, but man does it stay hot after that. It never really lets up. “Watch That Man” is such a stellar opener. It’s what I want in an opener. Couldn’t get better. The emphasis on heavy guitar throughout is wonderful and really brings in a hard rock sound I’d been wanting from Bowie in both “Heroes” and “Station to Station.” This felt more like “Ziggy,” which I appreciated. I’ve always loved hard rock Bowie and it was great to have him back. Please give me more Bowie like this. This felt like exactly what I’d expect one of his albums to sound like and I loved it. A surprising five stars from me. Excellent stuff. Standout Tracks: Watch That Man, Drive-In-Saturday, Panic in Detroit, Cracked Actor, Time, The Prettiest Star
Bowie is an artist that I've taken too long to get into, but I've grown to appreciate in the last year. The weirdness (Time or some of the jazzy piano parts in other songs) is part of the draw and appeal, but he can also put out a straight forward rocker like Cracked Actor that sounds like it belongs with any of the hard rockers of the era. The narrative carries you, or pushes you, through the adventure that Bowie was on. He's the chameleon, and is made up of characters, but none of it feels inauthentic. It's like he's embraced the excess, the madness, the wilderness of the city and magnified it.
This is #day43 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it's a sunny September Friday here in my hometown, Lviv, signaling the first Indian, or old women's summer, as we call it in Ukrainian. I'm revisiting what I believe is the first of many David Bowie albums on this list. It’s hard to say anything new about Aladdin Sane (I mean, it's iconic no matter what angle you look at it. For example, I could only stare at that album cover forever), so I'll share a couple of personal Bowie moments instead. If memory serves me right, this was the first album of his I was introduced to (the year was 2008, I believe), thanks to Anton Corbijn's film Control, which I mentioned in my Unknown Pleasures review. Remember the scene where Ian Curtis dresses up in front of the mirror and applies eyeliner while "The Jean Genie" plays? You bet. I must admit I haven't yet listened to Bowie's entire discography (though I consider myself a fan), but I find myself drawn most to his experimental period, the Berlin years. Let's face it, though: Bowie was all about experimentation, and that's the beauty of his music. Each era offers something unique for different ears. Even my wife, who isn't a Bowie fan at all, has a song she loves ("The Heart's Filthy Lesson"). As a vinyl collector, I'm lucky to own an NM copy of the first UK pressing of this album, complete with an insert and an "I Love You David" postcard. Listening to the title track and “Lady Grinning Soul” on vinyl (actually, the whole album) is mesmerizing. Those Mike Garson piano solos chill me to the bone... I can see how the avant-garde jazziness of Blackstar might have its roots here. Each song is a jewel on its own, contributing to the crown of one of Bowie’s countless masterpieces. This album earns a solid 5 out of 5 from me. Looking forward to #day44.
This is a perfect rock album. It’s rock at its best. Electrifying guitar, iconic drum beats, perfect mixing of instruments. It just all comes together SO well. There’s songs that bring a nostalgic, 70’s rock feel with groovy tunes, and songs with some truly instrumentally dense, more funky and morose music. I don't understand how this isn’t considered one of Bowies best. Obviously it’s no Ziggy Stardust, but cmon you can’t compare anything to that masterpiece. I love this record and… I’ll say it. This is right up there with any of Hendrix’s albums. It’s that good.
¡Qué bueno!
if the ending of ziggy stardust is orpheus getting torn up by wild animals (fans of rockstars) then this is orpheus's head wandering the underworld and screaming (america). i'm probably in the minority since I like this better than ziggy stardust, but i don't think it's terribly useful to reduce bowie's shit to rankings like that - it all works together too much
Ziggy Stardust Pt II hits fast and hits hard.
As a fan of David Bowie, I have to say that this is one of his albums that has slipped under my radar. I am, of course, familiar with the tracks with the most radio play but I don't think I ever listened to this album from start to finish. I find that it is not as strong as "Ziggy" and is less cohesive but several of the tracks here are very strong and show a diverse range of influences. The influence of The Rolling Stones is evident even aside from the cover song which is pretty good, but little more than filler. The other songs on this record are well worth the price of admission, and Mick Ronson's guitar work and Mike Garson's piano are sublime. "Panic in Detroit", is one of my favorite Bowie tracks.
Pretty wonderful throughout. Mike Garson's bonkers discordant keys. The sax. Mick Ronson. The glam rock, the Motown, the bum note Stones cover we have to mention, the actual record cover. It's a crash course for the ravers. Time, he flexes like a whore, falls wanking to the floor, his trick is you and me, boy. Jean Genie is massively overplayed, but I won't let that spoil it, and finishing the album eerily with Lady Grinning Soul is genius.
Amazing album. Thebobly thing I really didnt like was the title song. Skipped it as a kid and didnt like it at 48 either. Still the music and the uniqueness of Bowie makes this album one of my favorites of him. The aura of the crescendo on the songs make it seems like the world is going to end and all songs are like a victory party. This may have been by the fact that hos previous album made him famous amd rich and this album is much heavier and you can hear deeper influences by english rock bands including a rolling stones cover and by the american music of the time. Its a great fussion of to worlds that melted perfectly.
This might be my new favorite Bowie album. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to it all the way through, but wow. I loved every song, but “Watch That Man,” “Drive-In Saturday,” “Panic In Detroit,” and “The Jean Genie” are the standouts. I also love the concept of this being about him traveling through America during his tour. You can actually hear the inspiration in a lot of the songs. This is going to be on constant rotation for me.
Ich finde andere Bowie-Platten zugänglicher. Nichtsdestotrotz ein tolles Stück Rockmusik.
Bowie nunca falla. Sorprendente y adelantadísimo. Qué arreglos, qué música, qué voz, qué presencia. Terminó y enseguida lo volví a escuchar. Joya.
Great album, a worthy successor to Ziggy Stardust. Bowie evolved the glam rock sound that is probably his signature style, if he has one at all. Some elements of experimentation but nothing that prevented Aladdin Sane being a huge hit, I like pretty much every song on this. The title track breaks down into something slightly avant garde, but this is mostly accessible while also inventive. Also I don't really take the cover art into account for my scores normally but this is one of the most iconic of all time
It's weird to me that people were disappointed in this after Ziggy. The piano takes it somewhere just slightly different but it is still full of songs that grab you immediately. Even the filler of doing a Stones cover is elevated by that ending.
In between a 4 and a 5, but let’s just say 5 and all be friends.
You can never say anything bad about David Bowie
I'm a sucker for early 70s Bowie. The music, the lyrics, the tempo, the themes and the persona constantly change throughout, but the chaos of it all works together as a musical masterclass in edgy glamrock diversity.
Peak Bowie, maybe not my favorite, but still essential. A-… fuck it, 5 stars
One of the best by one of the best. I don’t know how you rate any of Bowie’s albums from the 70s and 80s as anything other than five stars.
Classic david Bowie album.
Five Stars.
Ziggy goes to America and gets weird. Bowie begins truly collaborating and experimental.
Sublime - classic - what more needs to be said
One of my favorite Bowie albums. Nothing but a rating of 10/10 on every track.
Not done but rocking
Every time I listen to this I hear something new. THIS TIME, I heard a running theme, both romanticizing and eulogizing someone's gauzy, distant view of a pop culture that never was. Like all the Glam was just for show, and underneath was something less appealing, strangeness that is no longer interesting and exciting but bitter, ungrounded, untethered. Often the lyrics go off the rails of saliency, and this state of mind is further illustrated by Mike Garson's solo at the end of the title track. Like a stage set that we get glimpses of an unkempt chaos behind it. But just glimpses. Things are starting to fall apart. Or maybe just change into something else.
Classic of my youth
one of my favorites
Heavy metal bass, jazz piano, funk drum, oh David Bowie, textbook of being playful.
It’s Bowie!
Well it's David Bowie tf d'you expect
I am sad that I didn't discover this album sooner in life. Lady Grinning Soul is a stand out song for me. It is a slow ballad that is melancholic for an experience the listener has never had but understands well. There is an guarded approach for optimism at the end with both Bowie and a guitar singing, but fading away. Brilliant album.
amazing album, very revolutionary and it's very different from any other albums at the time. Yay to Bowie
Este una de las cimas del espectacular 1973: Dark side of the moon, Catch a fire, Raw power, Band on the run, New York Dolls, Aladdin Sane, Berlin, Let´s get it on, For Your Pleasure, Call me, A wizzard/a true star, Innervisions, GP, Tubullar Bells, Houses of the holy, Quadrophenia, Selling England by the Pound, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (y Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player), Killing Me Softly, For Your Pleasure...
Insane. 5
A spectacular and ageless work of genius. Favourite track: Lady Grinning Soul
SLAPS from every direction
5 stars for the starman. In this digital age I do miss sleeve notes though. The LP had the city that each song was composed in against the track. discogs has the info but its not really the same ...
It's Bowie. A little weird, but always a jam.
It's not Bowie's best album, but it might be his most interesting, and that's saying something. It's also the inspiration for my Inforoo avatar.
It's hard for me to pick a favorite David Bowie album, after "Blackstar," but "Aladdin Sane" is my favorite Bowie song. This album, as most of his, has several hits and monumental songs, and it is a journey through several different moods and sounds. It is definitely one of his best...of which there are many, in my opinion.
¡Qué bueno!
Love it. One of those albums I can listen to with no skips, with a wonderfully electrifying end.
Not my favorite Bowie but this record was great.
10/10
Great album with some really great grooves. Not my favourite Bowie but it still gets you track after track.
yet another bowie album! probably the PRETTIEST bowie album i've heard out of the bunch. not only is his songwriting at its peak around this point, i also have to give props to the pianist, mike garson. seriously there's so much life in this album and those amazing flourishes make you feel like you're in heaven.
Bowie!!! Minus the Stones cover this is a classic!!!
So. Much. Piano. Love love love
it sounded good, it got me in the right mood, it fel good and it was also bowie. Its in a range of 7.5-10.0 yet and would need some relistens but for now i gonna go with 5.0/5.0
Listened 3/15/24. This album was the second Bowie record I listened to growing up, the first being "Let's Dance". Boy were they different, but I just loved this record. It is a classic for me.
i always have a tough time picking a favorite Bowie record, but this is definitely in the running. so great all the way through. the Stones cover is clearly the weakest song, but i don’t think it’s too bad. everything else is fantastic, especially Drive-In Saturday which is one of my absolute favorite songs of his.
