Reviews (page 5 of 14)
Oh dear. Here it is. Perhaps one of my favourite albums of all time. Operatic, over the top, melodramatic, ballsy, camp, silly, wondrous, magnificent, unique. Top marks to all four lads for this one, but a bonus star for Freddie's artistic vision.
This is why we ignored our parents and listened to Queen. What a memory jar to the head it was to listen to this album. The stilleto crisp solos, the keyboard glissandos, the soaring harmonies. Oh wow... I was 17 all over again. This is a must-have for any Queen fan and is in my digital library. Glad I listened to ALL of this one!
This is my childhood album my mum always listened to this and Seaside Rendezvous will always be an absolute jam. With or without Bohemian Rhapsody this album is one of their best. 5
it's fantastic, but you already knew that

It was a great album, it opened my eyes (or ears lol) to Freddy Mercury and the band Queen itself. Coming from listening to the OG song everyone knows.. to this album... It was a great experience!
A Night At The Opera is a musical tour de force. All the instruments are perfect. The musical production is turned up to 11 but it works. It truly is like attending an opera. Freddy's voice is something to behold.
Some familiar songs. A lot more barbershop than I anticipated.
Magnificent
Of course I'm familiar with Queen, but I'm not sure I've ever listened to an entire Queen album before. This was an excellent place to start. Good all the way through. Highlights (excluding the three hits, which I've heard before): '39, Sweet Lady (Brian May shines here). I actually didn't mind I'm In Love With My Car, but it does break the flow of the album a little. It felt like dropping a Van Halen song in the middle of a Queen album.
Redondo
Incredible album. Theatrical and innovative and just good.
This album is so brilliant that I always forget it has bohemian rhapsody on it
Classic.
Pardon me, Do you have any Grey Poupon?
Fantastic
What an album 😍
Haven't listened to this whole album in decades. Absolutely fantastic, even the campy ones (Seaside Rendezvous, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon). Favorites (other than Bohemian Rhapsody): Death on Two Legs, 39.
Brilliant!
I don't know what to say about this album. A rocking album, fortified with the one of the greatest songs of an all time. Even when it's not Freddie, it's still awesome.
Death On Two Legs // Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon // I’m In Love With My Car // You’re My Best Friend // The Prophet’s Song // Love Of My Life // Bohemian Rhapsody 4.5/5
A Classic if there ever was one
Classic. Bohemian Rhapsody and deep tracks that form a concept album, just not too deep.
Goated
I love so much about this album. What struck me first is how clean the electric guitar sounds starting with Death on Two Legs carrying out throughout the album. Mixed with the wide variety of other instruments used, the production value on this album still stands to be phenomenal to this day. Everything really culminates into a very grandiose sound. Freddie Mercury wastes no time to go into belting his famous vocals as well. Of course I've heard "You're My Best Friend" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" plenty of times and I love them both. But it was nice to get a greater understanding of how they fit into this album as a whole instead of as a single. Bohemian Rhapsody in particular stands as the pinnacle of this album coming in at the climax.
This is a great album. It is very dynamic and listens much like a - shocker - Rock Opera. Huge fan.
Ok so what a game changer album, even for Queen. People were giving Bohemian Rhapsody shit when the Prophet was right there? Insane
Great album, rockin and good guitar
I've always loved this album. Sure, most of it is overshadowed by BoRhap, but every song here can hold its own. "Death on Two Legs" is one of the most biting, bitter songs ever put to tape (in a good way). "Love of My Life" is one of the finest ballads ever written. Even a song about car lust is pretty solid in retrospect. What a wonderful collection of tunes.
excelletn
Very classic album!! Love of my life :,) great song. All around nostalgic for me too
Hell yes to I’m in love w my car
the best queen album
Such a treat to relisten to this. I think this generator thinks my least favorite album is rock which maybe it has a point but you really cant beat rock like this. Just an awesome record through and through. Some highlights beside the obvious include death on two legs, ‘39, and the prophets song (such an epic song, not for regular everyday listening)
It is simple. I see Bohemian Rhapsody, I rate 5 stars.
Got this album for Christmas when I was 14. Love the mix of queen rock songs and Kookie fun songs and of course the iconic BR
Absolutely amazing! Obviously bohemian rhapsody, your my best friend and love of my life, are great but there were a number of songs that I had never heard before that we so fun. Death on two legs and 39 I especially likes 4.9
Album 234 of 1001 Queen - A Night At the Opera Rating : 5 / 5 Favorite Tracks: You're My Best Friend / Bohemian Rhapsody This is a difficult one. Though I realize what an awesome piece of work this album is, there is something that has always left me feeling it is somewhat overrated. There are a few top notch or possibly "great" songs, but the rest just don't measure up, in some way. As a whole though, the album is undeniably an awesome piece of work. I'm going to give it credit for that rather than be nitpicky. I'll call it a 5 - rounded up.
One of my favourite albums with one of my all-time favourite songs.
What a throwback to my youth. The energy on this album is unreal.
love this one, even the car song. it shows all sides of queen, the love songs, the epic ones, the silly ones and it shows the capacity of each member of adding something great to the songs. also about the car song, its not at all queen's worst track, people just dont like it because the drummer is a bitch and managed to make it a single. anyway, one of queen's best LPs.
Queen are the kings of a good time. Fabulous!
So good.
Rhapsody
Потрясающий альбом потрясающей группы.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL and I just got the vinyl which I’m very happy about AND IT’S SO GOOD AHHHH
A classic
A rare perfect album. Every song deserves its place on this album, eloquently showcasing everything that makes Queen so exceptional. Each meme we of the band gets to showcase their skills as both musicians and songwriters. The album is packed to the brim with hits. The whole package feels so innovative and revolutionary to this day. And it spans such a range of genres, but every track is still so unmistakably Queen. Track picks: “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “You’re My Best Friends,” “39,” “The Prophet’s Song”
What a joy to listen. This band is just legendary. Unique sound, great singer, great musicians and they have a lot of fun. Not many bands are like this.
good instrumentals, good singing, fun lyrics, unique music all over
Ennakko-arvio: odotan lenkkiä tämän tahtiin. On se kova! Kovaa tykitystä alusta loppuun. Ehdottomat suosikit: Love of my life ja Bohemian Rhapsody. 10/10 ja menee uudelleen kuunteluun. Sopii erittäin hyvin myös lenkkimusiikiksi, noin 5 km lenkille keston puolesta.
Fantastic! It’s such a classic, containing maybe one of the most well known and overplayed—for good reason—songs of all time, Bohemian Rhapsody. Regardless, it’s a good example of Freddie Mercury’s vocal range as well of his artistic range as a musician.
"bestaat er muziek dat niet in de jaren 70 gemaakt is?!?!!" Desalniettemin is dit wel het neusje van de zalm, het album wat een van de aller aller beste nummers ooit heeft geïntroduceerd. Kan niet anders dan 5 sterren
Letterlijk alles wat ik nodig had. Heb het album 3x geluisterd, op 1 dag. Enough said.
SEEEEE 9/10
Love the story about I'm In Love With My Car.
"Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)" - The album opens with a bang, featuring Freddie Mercury's fierce vocals and angry lyrics directed at Queen's former manager. It's a powerful and theatrical introduction, setting the stage for the album's grandeur. "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" - A short, whimsical track sung by Mercury, providing a lighthearted contrast to the intensity of the previous song. It showcases Queen's quirky and humorous side. "I'm in Love with My Car" - Written and sung by drummer Roger Taylor, this song is a tribute to the band's love for fast cars. It's a heavier, rock-driven track and adds diversity to the album. "You're My Best Friend" - Written by bassist John Deacon, this pop-infused song is a complete departure from the previous track. It's a catchy, feel-good tune that highlights Deacon's songwriting talent. "39" - This song, written and sung by Brian May, is a folk-infused, acoustic gem. Its intricate harmonies and science fiction-themed lyrics add depth to the album. "Sweet Lady" - Returning to a more rock-oriented sound, this track features May's blistering guitar work and Mercury's passionate vocals. "Seaside Rendezvous" - A playful and whimsical track that showcases Queen's creativity. The song incorporates kazoo, tap dancing, and various vocal effects, demonstrating the band's ability to experiment. "The Prophet's Song" - A progressive rock masterpiece, this song highlights Queen's intricate vocal layering and May's epic guitar work. It's a multi-part opus that showcases the band's musical prowess. "Love of My Life" - A heartfelt ballad sung by Mercury, accompanied by his acoustic guitar. This song is a fan favorite and is a testament to Mercury's emotive and powerful vocals. "Good Company" - Another example of Queen's musical diversity, this song features Dixieland jazz influences and is performed using multi-tracked guitars and May's vocals as a jazz band. It's a unique and charming addition to the album. "Bohemian Rhapsody" - The centerpiece of the album, this iconic and groundbreaking track is a rock opera in itself. It seamlessly weaves together various musical genres, from opera to hard rock, and tells a complex narrative. It features Mercury's unforgettable vocal performances and is arguably one of the greatest rock songs of all time. "God Save the Queen" - The album concludes with a brief but powerful instrumental rendition of the British national anthem, which adds a sense of grandeur and finality to the work. "A Night at the Opera" is an album that pushed the boundaries of rock music, both in terms of musical experimentation and production techniques. It's a testament to Queen's extraordinary talents as musicians, songwriters, and performers. The album's diversity and willingness to take risks set it apart, and it continues to be celebrated as a timeless classic, appealing to music enthusiasts of all generations.
Love this. Always liked Queen but not sure I ever listened to this one in full before. It's a bit crazy! Obviously some classics like BR which made their name but I love the general eccentricity
Great record. Fun to listen to from start to finish.
Good love queen
Obviously famous and well deserved though while Bohemian Rhapsody steals the show the Prophet's Song is heavily underrated.
EASY 5. All the Glam and excitement of what Queen is all wrapped up in an epic album. The freaking deep tracks man... Love of My Life is still a favorite of mine. Sunday Afternoon is a shorty piece but great nonetheless. Good Company is like Tiny Tim but all the added tracks and flair of musical beauty. The album is a masterpiece.
There is a little bloat here and the weird song about the drummer wanting to bang his car. But this is still a hard 5. The bloat can be forgiven here as when this thing slaps, it slaps hard.
Every song is good
Classic
I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!!!!! Death on two legs is like queens most underrated song it’s so good but no one talks about it. Great flow even if I’m in love with my car has stupid lyrics
Obvious a Queen classic
Bohemian Rhasody? More like Bhor Ragnarok
Really diverse in terms of many different genres showcased on one album. Can definitely see why it's a very popular album, especially with "newer" sounds like inspiration from folk and cabaret infused in this era of music.
I fucking love queen, I used to have them on cd in my old car (that could hold 6 cds in it)
3 iconic songs in one album!! Definitely deserves 5 stars even though it has a couple of really bad songs.
An exquisite listening experience from start to finish, grand & bombastic, soft & sweet, an essential listening experience for everyone, both Queen and music at its peak.
A great album but unfortunately I've listened to it 1000 times already.
Queen is always amazing!
goood
If this isn’t a perfect album, I don’t know what is. Even the bad song just kind of makes you laugh.
I’ve been listening to this for 40 years and still find it riveting from start to finish. RIP Freddie.
Great band with a huge range. Love how over the top and theatrical it all is. Love the vocal sounds, Freddy Mercur’s voice. Brian May’s tones are crazy he sometimes sounds like a clarinet or cello. Favorites: 39’ seaside rendezvous Bohemian rhapsody You’re my best friend Love of my life Good company
Some timeless tracks on here and a couple of lesser songs, but still has to be a 5. What a brilliant band these guys were.
I mean... It's Queen. It's A Night At The Opera. It's Bohemian Rhapsody. I feel like this website is a game and I just won.
There's a lot of descriptors I can give this album. It's cheeky, campy, bombastic, operatic, full of itself, wacky, playful, yet with all of these it ends up being absolutely brilliant. To me, this is Queen at their peak. The arrangements of these songs are fantastic with how strong and powerful Mercury's vocals are throughout, the licks and tone Brian May has, and the rock solid rhythms between Taylor and Deacon. They twist from straight hard rock, to operatic and almost as if they were lifted from a musical, and plenty in-between. Bohemian Rhapsody is the most well known (and the most famous Queen song nowadays), but in a way it is the best encompassing song of the record, possessing all of the previously described genres and elements into one singular and every so memorable song. But outside of this song there is so many memorable songs here, from the crooning ballad Love of my Life that actually hits an earnest note, to the upbeat rock of You're My Best Friend, both of which have Mercury front and center as you feel and hear the charisma just radiating off him at every turn. It's a monumentally great effort from Queen, and one which holds up fantastically.
slay queen
Who doesn’t love Queen?
HELL YES.
Easiest 5 start rating if them all. This is the album that started my lifelong love of Queen. There are people who don't like I'm In Love With My Car. Inconceivable! Roger had one of the great rock voices of all time it's just that he was in a band that had the greatest front man with the greatest voice of them all. Four great musicians, four great songwriters and the sheer audacity to turn prog rock into pomp rock. There's a song about time dilation from a man whose doctoral thesis was in the field of cosmology. Yep... it is rocket science. Oh yes. That guitar sound comes from a guitar built by Brian and his dad feed through a pre-amp built by John.
AMAZING
Very cool album. Production is very strong, vocals are strong. Guitar work is amazing.
Amazong songs and production
An absolutely excellent and classic album. It was a nice one to draw today on a laid back Friday. It'd been a bit for sure. I remembered that the mix on this album has always bugged me, everything feels like it should be louder and it just kind of feels buried in itself. That being said, the songs are undeniably great.
Fantastic ‘39 underrated
Anything bellow 5 star should be considered a war crime by the Ginebra convention
You can feel this is something extraordinary.
один из лучших альбомов квинов, прям как альбом
Raro pero hermoso
Prophets song a-cappella part reminds me of YEM vocal jam and bouncing. And all delayed echoes in phish like ghost and others I can’t think of. Sick song. Whole album is great, feels like a play or a night at the opera
its a good one
This album is a masterpiece. I am not a Queen or Freddie Mercury apologist by any means, but this album rips hard. Brian Mays often gets left behind in the discussion of top rock guitarists, but he just knows how to lay down a track. When you listen to Bohemian Rhapsody in the entirety of this album, you almost appreciate it for what it is and what it meant back then and not as "that overplayed theater kids looking for attention song". There were some surprises such as the country folk banger "'39". Being their first massive hit of an album, the band was obviously elevated to rock's Hall of Fame immediately after, but I don't know if any other album feels quite as cohesive and progressive. A hard album to beat. Stand out track: '39
I've always known Queen was great, but I never actually dived into their music before outside of their hits. I amazed by the album, the title of the album speaks for itself. They blend elements from opera and show tunes with classic hard rock to create and an incredibly original sound that is worth listen to from beginning to end. Favorite tracks: Good company/The prophet song Least favorite track: Sweet lady
Every single song is SO. GOOD. And I rediscovered my love of 39!!!
Truly something special
Yeah, this is just a blast to listen to. There isn’t a note out of place anywhere. I think because of the music video for Bohemian Rhapsody I always thought it was the rest of the band doing backup but it’s just layers and layers of Freddie. Bohemian Rhapsody hits differently after listening to this. Obviously I’ve heard it before but this builds up to it. I assumed (incorrectly) that Queen is 90% FM but it’s clearly a good combination of talents. If you played Good Company blindfolded and asked me who it was I’d have said the Beatles. I don’t know how this only topped out at 4.
Lovee love lovee this album, so many great songs and the progression true the album is amazing. 5.0
FODA DEMAIS ESSA PORRA!
The best album doesn't exi... fuck. Here it is. This album is so good. Embarrassing I don't have this vinyl. Bit I know every word of every song. This is the best album.
Who cares about the other songs, this album has bohemian rhapsody. Nothing else can be said.
They’re just good aren’t they.
very good quirky album. Would definitely give it more listens. Seems to be a classic!
It’s A Night At The Opera. It speaks for itself.
Bohemian rhapsody
Truly awesome album. It shouldn't be a surprise that Queen deliver an epic, action-packed album for a full EP, but it's still so impressive to experience. Favorite track is obviously Bohemian Rhapsody, but out of the non-obvious ones, it'll be The Prophet's Song
awesome
9/10, eu escutei meio avulso mas gostei
Superb album - every track brilliant
I knew I liked Bohemian Rhapsody and You're My Best Friend (because why wouldn't you). I didn't realize how much I'd love the rest of the album. The whole thing is just a great journey start to finish. There's a few places where things didn't quite work for me (I'll have to give The Prophet's Song another shot) but it's still so interesting and great throughout. I really love when bands try unique things even if they don't always work, so hard to even knock them given how well it works overall. An awesome rock album with just so many different instruments and styles to keep every song fresh. Freddie Mercury's voice is obviously incredible. I'm disappointed that I hadn't listened to the full album before, but glad I know it's there now. Favorite song: Bohemian Rhapsody Other: Death on Two Legs (Dedicated To…), Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, You’re My Best Friend, ‘39, Seaside Rendezvous, Love of My Life, Good Company
I mean, this is just Queen at practically their very best. Every song is fantastic and all of the members contribute wonderfully to the record.
Great
This feels like the big one. It’s the one with Bohemian Rhapsody for crying out loud. I said this in the Lynyrd Skynyrd review, but it’s hard to imagine a time before Bohemian Rhapsody (and Freebird). Let’s listen and see if the rest of the album is as good! Songs I already knew: You’re My Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody Favourites: all of them (well, I’m In Love With My Car is a bit weird but otherwise…) This album has me not only loving the sound, but picturing myself as a fly on the wall during the writing process. The song structures and often fascinating yet work exceptionally well. Freddie’s vocals are as perfect as usual, just like the rest of Queen with their backing. Sometimes, I’ll listen to an album and, maybe somewhat narcissistically, think that I could have written something like that if I put my mind to it. Well there is no chance with this. This is an album written by geniuses in music.
I love this album. So much pomp and drama.
Just so, so good. This kind of hits all the marks for Queen. It’s got fantastic all out rockers like the opening track and Sweet Lady, English music ball homages, and Bohemian Rhapsody, of course.
Quand Jacky Tuning collabore avec Albert Einstein
A masterpiece.
incredible beautiful amazing show stopping one of a kind never before seen
The complete experience. Goosebumps in 5 seconds after hitting play - any% speedrun.
Bardzo dobre, nawet wstawki wykonywane przez resztę zespołu nie przeszkadzają. Czego wcześniej nie znałem: Death on two legs.
I really don't see how anyone can argue against this album. It's a masterpiece. Anyone who bags on it is clearly doing so from a bitter and petty place. Or maybe they just don't like music? I don't know. It doesn't make sense. It's just so damn good! It's just banger after banger. Every track is its own massive production. Every song is an unstoppable freight train of pure vibe. It's that good AND it's freaking FUN. The sheer talent on display here is almost unfair. I'd be upset about it if... no, that's a lie. I get to reap the rewards of someone else's talent and that's when art is at its best. This is how music is supposed to work. Anyone who tries to kick up a fuss about this one is full of crap.
Why have I left it so long to take this deep dive into Queen?! I'd never spent the time to listen to full albums, only the most well-known singles. This was a wholly excellent album. The only other album the generator has given me so far has been Sheer Heart Attack, and while that was amazing, this has definitely beaten it in my opinion. It's silly and weird without being totally random and directionless, and it just rocks, even verging into heavy metal territory in a couple of songs. This album is an easy 5, and I really wonder if this will end up being my favourite Queen album. Favourite: Bohemian Rhapsody
Brilliant album! Incredibly creative and inventive
soo iconic and just bangers end to end
This is one quirky album. Opens with the great and vitriolic track "Death On Two Legs" and then goes into to show-tunes, ballads, folk songs and more rock. It's great! I still think '39 is one of Queen's most underrated tracks (a song about the twin paradox no less). This album is varied, fun and not even "I'm in love with my car" can remove a start from this one.
⭐️ Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen always was and always will be good
top ten greatest albums of all time
Everything about this album just makes my brain go brrrrr. My favorite thing about Queen’s music is the choir parts of their music. All the voices harmonizing perfectly. I have such a sweet spot for Freddie Mercury too. There’s a reason why this is claimed to be their best album because frankly it is. The instrumentals and ofc the voices are so memorizing.
One of the greatest bands ever. Killer album.
Who would have thought the styles of rock and opera would mesh so well. So good!
classic
Rating: 10/10
A genuine masterpiece
A great collection of harmony and instrument heavy tracks. Feels like a lost Beatles album at some points. The rest of the songs build up perfectly to Bohemian Rhapsody.
Awesome!
Listened to this one on LP.
5 For Sure
I'm in love with my car. Dat nummer had van mij echt niet gehoeven. Maar de rest brengt allemaal wel wat. Gewoon een dikke vijf sterren.
One of my favorite albums. An absolute classic.
OK, it's my favorite album and my first time listening to Queen's music. 💖
5 stars, duh
Great album!!
Excellent album. Q seen at its best demonstrating a variety of musical styles.
My favorite Queen album! This one holds a lot of nostalgia value for me. It's honestly better than I remember. Though, I find it funny that Wikipedia has "Heavy Metal" listed under the genres for it. Standouts: Death On Two Legs, Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, You're My Best Friend, Seaside Rondezvous, Bohemian Rhapsody
Excellent, Queen are one of the best rock bands and this is one of the best Queen albums No bad tracks at all, several fantastic ones. The whole album swings to and fro with ease. It's a masterpiece
How fantastically gay in both the Oxoford dictionary & Queer way. I fell in love with Queen thanks to Wayne's World, no joke, and I've been fascinated with this band ever since. In who's right mind would think recording an Opera/Rock/Country album would be a good idea? It had to be one of the most outrageous & risky recordings in pop music history. Nonetheless, they pulled it off & some of these songs are the most recognizable across the globe. I adore Queen, I loved that they embraced the double meaning of the band's namesake & they didn't shy away from being pretty gay. What wonderfully talented hard rock weirdos.
great album. have listened to this many times over years
What a spectacle this band and album are. What a high level of performance from beginning to end. Truly an opera, a musical odyssey. Mercury’s vocal tracking and virtuosity, Brian May’s diversity of playing abilities, the range in musical styles, and the dynamics, both up and down moments, keeps you engaged, simply a high level of music from beginning to end in one of the best productions of the 1970s and ever. Perfect album.
The typical Queen sound we all know creates a versatile and enjoyable album that convinces with its pompous production, feeling of hearing something big and technical aspects, rather than having hit followed by hit
Bohemian Rhapsody. Vinilo.
No me ha encantado, pero ...
Few bands have such a distinct personality and style as Queen. But their style is actual pretty wide-ranging and all of it is on display on "A Night at the Opera." There are shimmering pop songs ("You're My Best Friend"), gorgeous ballads ("Love of My Life"), hard rock bangers ("Sweet Lady") and playful old-timey ditties that feel like musical cosplaying ("Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" and "Seaside Rendezvous"). And it all comes crashing together in stunning rock god glory on "Bohemian Rhapsody." Just a tremendous, huge song that's still a blast to listen to after hearing it countless times. Freddie Mercury is one of the greatest singers of any genre and his incredible, practically otherworldly skills are perfectly showcased here. There's no song quite like it. Although actually, "The Prophet's Song" similarly swings for the fences. An epic, 8-minute (and admittedly self-indulgent) prog-rock song, it's not as effective as "Bohemian Rhapsody" but it's still pretty awesome. Also, "I'm in Love With My Car" is an underrated Queen song. Such a killer, heavy song, and it's about dumping your girlfriend for your car. Hahah definitely one of their funniest songs. And drummer Roger Taylor is a solid rock singer too. The other gem here is "'39," a beautiful, folky Brian May song. (And I just learned from Wikipedia that it's a science-fiction song about space travel?? Fascinating.)
Hard to put into words how great Queen are. This album is probably their best, and it has "Bohemian Rhapsody" in it- one of the greatest songs of all time. Their music is so exciting, confident, excessive (in the best way), unrestrained, and fun. Goodness this album just flows so well too. It's hard to put Queen into buckets but I think Theatrical Baroque Pop is my favorite way to describe them. When I read that I just think about the infectiously fun bop that you get when you hear their music. Is there a better singalong than "Bohemian Rhapsody"? I don't know. Maybe "Happy Birthday", but somehow it's not as fun. "You're my Best Friend" "Love Of My Life" "Bohemian Rhapsody" Are all STUNNERS. Easy 5/5 for me. Love this so much!
Hyvä
Not a bad track
Classic
Had this album before. Original review: Bunch of Queen songs I've never heard here. Great stuff. Saved tracks: Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To...), I'm In Love With My Car, '39, The Prophet's Song
Aye aye aye, bop after bop after bop. Loved hearing a few deeper cuts that I had never taken the time to listen to before. What a great soundtrack on my sunny Monday morning in January.
A classic.
Stunning! Brilliant! Even kinda proggy!
*Sheer Heart Attack* is good, *Night At The Opera* is great, "Bohemian Rhapsody" is genuinely good but wildly overrated and overplayed, not even the best one on that album (which would be "Prophet's Song", tyvm)
4.5? 4.7? Not quite a solid 5 but the songs that make it a 5 are a 7
So successful are Queen at establishing opera mind that I am perpetually convinced that this is a double album. But, in fact, twelve tracks, just under forty-five, a perfect album where Queen is more Queen than Queen. Unfortunately, Freddie Mercury doesn't look his best on the inside of that gatefold.
Excellent
Just Queen!
Amazing album!
Bunch of Queen songs I've never heard here. Great stuff. Saved tracks: Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To...), I'm In Love With My Car, '39, The Prophet's Song
Fino a 'Love of my life' è molto godibile, ma niente di più. Poi ci sono appunto 'Love of my life' e 'Bohemian Rhapsody' forse la miglior canzone di sempre.
Déjà, on commence par la magistrale Death on Two Legs... L'idée de l'opéra est bien exploitée dans le côté over the top de chaque pièce, qui crée son propre univers, a une ambiance très différente (on pense à I'm in Love with My Car et Seaside Rendez-Vous) et semble souvent anachronique, comme intemporelle. Love of My Life me fait pleurer chaque fois que je l'entends. Bien entendu, Bohemian Rhapsody demeure un chef-d'œuvre par la force des différentes sections et son côté tout à fait original, voire incroyable.
Stunning!! Brilliant!!
Bop after bop after bop!
Amazing artistry!
This list was made for albums like A Night at the Opera, let's just say that. An absolute mammoth of an record, it starts out at 100 and never lets up the whole way through. The best thing about this is that every song varies in style and sound, but even with that it all still feels classically Queen. No one else is as effortless, as fun, as ambitious, and as talented as these guys were. To make songs like Love of My Life and I'm in Love with my Car work - let alone in the same album? Fantastic stuff. Standout tracks are Death on Two Legs, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, You're My Best Friend, and obviously, Bohemian Rhapsody.
A true 5 star album - Certainly the best thing Queen have ever made (and they have done some quality albums) So many different sounding songs but they fit together so well to make that album sound. I mean how on earth should "lazing on a sunday afternoon" follow "Death on two legs"? It shouldn't work, but it does. Before it then kicks into the such underrated "I'm in love with my car". So many highlights but the way The Prophets Song falls into Love of My Life is just magical. A truly great album. If I could aware 6 stars I would
Chanson parfaite I'm in love with my car bof You're my best friend, 39, très sympa Prophet's song en opening de side 2... quel album love of my life belle chanson Et puis.. et puis .. et puis il y a : BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. Que dire sauf que c'est peutêtre la plus grande chanson jamais composée 5 Focking stars
Grew up with my parents playing Queens greatest hits to death. But this is the first time Iv actually listened to this album in full. was surprised how diverse it was, good mix of metal, prog rock and pop. With a few absolute classics best friend and obviously bohemian rapsidy. The car song is a bit stupid but rest of the album really holds up.
it feels like all i need to say is that this is the album with Borap on it so of course it's a goat. but i've never listened to the full album and it actually really surprised me with how much i loved it. mainly because it's got a song for all occasions - and there aren't many songs out there which are about loving your friends/loving your car. it's so fun and light, and seems so quintessentially british but also kind of satirical. and then takes a darker turn from prophets song. musically it's great, brian may really shone. the layered vocals are incredible. they use so many instruments, i think i heard a kazoo at one point? i thought i preferred a day at the races but i reckon this one is my fav queen album. id give it 9/10 but i'll round up also nostalgic, it reminds me of my mum :) favourite song: love of my life, but i've always known that - seaside rendezvous on this listen though
My first bought album, it was a really good album….
Just awesome. Even if you removed Bohemian Rhapsody and You're My Best Friend I still would love it. Queen got me into prog and hard rock, so I'll always have a place in my heart for their 70s albums Favorites are Death on Two Legs, '39, Seaside Rendezvous, The Prophet's Song, and Love of My Life. Their deep cuts are better than their hits.
A very fun album to listen to and Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the best songs ever made. My other favorite is Love of my life, beautiful song
I’ve been off queen for a little while, and this album proved to be an excellent return to form. The band has a lot of cohesion and Freddie’s vocals and arrangement really shine. I don’t really have anything negative to say
i’ve somewhat soured on queen in recent years, but this still goes so hard.
Amazing as Queen tends to be. I expected to like the album as a whole a bit less with the well known exceptional songs but more bad ones. However, I liked almost every song. Amazing album.
cool
Before I almost reflex-5-star this Queen album, I want to address any reasons why it might not deserve it: “Death on Two Legs”: not a bad song, but surprisingly venomous for an opening track. Did Freddie Mercury just tell me to kill myself? “Car”: it’s a dumb song about being in love with a car. However, if you don’t like this song you’re wrong “Sweet Lady”: Might be filler, but I believe it’s only diminished by being on the same album as much better songs. The 3/4, or 4/4, switches are interesting. “The Prophet’s Song”: the first time I heard the album I didn’t much care for the a cappella interlude. However this very proggy tune has grown on me a lot since then. Taking away those songs you are left with some of Queen’s greatest work, including 3 very enjoyable old-timey ditties and the best version of “God Save the Queen” (sorry Sex Pistols). Can’t say whether it’s the best Queen album but it has just about everything one would want in a Queen album. HL: “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “39”, “Love of My Life”, “Seaside Rendezvous”
What can I say about this album, I've listened to it so much. My favorites are '39 and The Prophets Song, Love of my Life is also fantastic, and of course Bohemian Rhapsody is the coup de grâce. For criticisms, I'd say that the musical styles for this album are all over the place and somewhat disjointed. Lots of good songs that stand well on their own but maybe don't make a cohesive whole taken together.
Perfection
Queeniä parhaimmillaan. Jos on edellisillä levyillä biisit kuulostanu samanlaisilta, niin nyt sitä ongelmaa ei oo. 43 minuutin aikana ehtii kuulla vaikka ja mitä. Paras biisi: Bohemian rhapsody helppo valinta, mut shoutout I’m in love with my car ja Death on two legs Huonoin biisi: Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon
Подслушано! Крутейший альбом.
Couldn't give queen anything else than 5 stars
The silliness of I'm in love with my car aside this is a cracking album from one of the greatest bands of all time. Bohemian Rhapsody gets the lions share of the attention But love of my life and you're my best friend are just as good and Sweet Lady is a really good time. Great album by a great band.
This is in my opinion one of the greatest CDs of all time. No discussion of it can start anywhere other than Freddie Mercury's voice. It soars, with incredible range, rich timbre, and tremendous power even at the limits of his range. He carries no song as completely as "You're My Best Friend", which might not work with any other singer, ever. Queen's virtuosity on this record is not limited to Mercury's lead vocals - they get incredible contributions from every other member. May's guitar is amazing throughout - he gets such a thick, liquid sound out of his guitar, it sounds like literally no one else, and his solos on "Death on Two Legs" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" are momentous. Their backing vocals are omnipresent and note-perfect - I think many people would say overbearing, but in my opinion the upper limit on how much backing vocal is acceptable is very, very high and Queen get nowhere near it. They actually get solid performances out of their secondary vocalists as well - in part because of how much the backing vocals can carry, the other singer on "I'm In Love With My Car" is able to make an otherwise workmanlike performance that would otherwise just be a change-of-pace into a high point of the record, and the performance on "Good Company" works well there too. And Queen's composition and production is simply unrivaled outside of a handful of the greatest records of all time - every song has incredible sound, tremendous diversity, and intricate, unique harmonization, all working perfectly well in one package - an achievement repeated writ-large in the diversity yet incredible cohesion of all the songs on the record. One thing that's really notable about this CD is how strong a sense of comedy-in-music Queen has. I've now heard this cover-to-cover dozens of times, but the first time I heard the guitar solo come in on "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" I burst out laughing. It's an incredible comedic moment - the whole song has been this kind of Vaudeville acoustic bit, with little flecks of color like the bicycle bells aping Freddie's piano line, and just as it's wrapping up, Brian May launches in with a face-melting blast of electric guitar. "Seaside Rendevouz" and "Good Company" have similar silly moments - the whole kazoo sequence on "Seaside Rendevouz" is ridiculous, in part because of how well it works (they end it with a slide whistle!), and the ending woodwind solos on "Good Company", backed up by a shredding mandolin, functions similarly. Several tunes are funny as songs too, most notably "I'm In Love With My Car", and some of the more overwrought lines from "Death on Two Legs" make me chuckle as well, although maybe they're meant to be taken seriously. And then there's "Bohemian Rhapsody". It's a towering achievement, and it has all of the above - soaring vocals, rich, complex harmonies, an incredible diversity of moods and sonic palettes, incredible comedic moments (like when the drums kick in), virtuosic guitar work, dominant backing vocals, everything. If this CD had "Bohemian Rhapsody" and 40 minutes of animals making barnyard sounds I'd give it a 4. The actual score is a foregone conclusion.
Un de mes premiers albums. Je pourrais pas l’écouter en boucle comme avant mais 5 étoiles rien que pour ce que ça représente pour moi. Mes best : love of my life, seaside rendez vous, prophet song, bohemian rhapsody En fait les seules que j’aime pas trop c’est good company sweet lady et I’m in love with my car J’inclus a day at the races avec lui, pour moi c’est un diptyque indissociable.
Peak
Bohemian Rhapsody. Vinilo.
LOVED this album, especially its greatest hits. five stars in my book!!
What a great album
Amazing stuff
Queen is so great. This album has a lot of songs that mean a lot to me. I enjoyed hearing some of the other songs as well. 9/10
Is there really a question about the rating for this one? A masterpiece!
Wow… this is literally perfect. Highlights: How can there be highlights if the whole damn thing slaps?
Truly a masterpiece. Great diversity among the songs but they create cohesive album and fit the concept. Great to hear Roger singing. Love '39 and The Prophet's song.
First Queen album I ever listened to straight through. What an experience. They could do it all. 39 would be a bit today, forget the rest of this thing with Rhapsody and Best Friend
Love it. Absolute classic. Funny that this was the first recommendations, as it was one of the first albums I ever loved.
Quintessential Queen Quality
I like it
Stone cold classic. I don't know what to even say about this album. One of the greats.
Plein de classiques incroyables, Death on two legs, Bohemian Rhapsody; You're my best friend... J'adore l'ambiance générale de l'album, avec une mention spéciale pour '39 qui me fait rêver.
One of those few and far between perfect albums.
Enjoyed this from start to finish, the familiar songs and the new-to-me ones, too. Plus, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Masterpiece
Fantastic.
Bursting with an abundance of ideas, Queen delivers a diverse and overloaded twelve-track album that hits on hard-rock, soft-pop, music hall, suite-style composition, and some dazzling delay-like effects. While the band's off-the-wall oddities are most closely akin to the music of Sparks, this record is really, really good on its own terms. It's also refreshing to hear Roger Taylor and Brian May sing lead on a few tracks. Favorites: "Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To...)" and "'39"
Back to back bangers
Sehr abwechslungsreich. Nicht nur der Standard Queen Sound
One of these superclassic albums of the 70s.. perfection of style.
One of those few and far between perfect albums.
Wasn’t a fan of The Prophets Song but other than that loved it.
Great
White album for theatre kids
This was my first album and to this day I do not think a more perfect album was ever composed. I got this for my 10th birthday and have memorized every song, lyric, lick and note from the 10k times I've listened to it. Where's the six star button?
Start på Semestern! Woohoo!
LP
Enjoyed hearing some of the off-the-beaten path Queen songs!
This was good
So good! I had this album as a kid and it was one of my favourites. I do not enjoy the interlude in the Prophet's Song but the rest of the song makes up for it and everything else is either amazing or hilarious.
Amazing album, with most forgetting how much the recording and layering sound pushed the boundaries at the time. Like The Beatles, the beauty of Queen was they had multiple talents able to get along, write songs AND... they never settled. "Just don't let me become boring" was all ever Freddie & Co was ever interested in.
Amazing
Another great album by Queen. The songs each have their own feel but they work well together. The mega hit is at the end of the album. I will listen to it again.
Queen is my favourite band of all time. On my last.fm they are twice the number of my 2nd place artist. I could talk about every Queen album in detail for hours. I love this album. Of course the famous songs Bohemian Rhapsody and You're My Best Friend, but it's full of so much other great stuff. Brian May's contributions on this album are outstanding: '39, The Prophet's Song , and Good Company are brilliant and more people should know them. '39 is possibly my favourite Queen song, or at least in the top 3. This album is such an eclectic mix of songs it's always a joy to listen to.
Brings me straight back to high school where I'd listen to this a lot on the morning bus trip. It's a very engaging album with genres and moods switching up after each song. What I find really interesting is their ambition to not use any synthesizers during the 70s and instead create sounds of clarinets, jazz bands, saxophones, through voices and guitar effects. Every member contributes at least one of the album's all killer tracks, and the three different vocalists have a chance to shine. Even though I find Bohemian Rhapsody a bit annoying whenever its played at karaoke, I come to love it when its in context of this album. Favourite songs are 39, You're My Best Friend, Prophet Song, and Love of My Life (even though the live version is 3 times better).
What a great album, so much fun. I love how it opens up and the way Bohemian Rhapsody fits in perfectly with the rest of the album. Faves: You're My Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody
Growing up in the UK, Queen are as omnipresent as complaining about the weather, so I've always thought of them as a band I "know", but in reality I haven't really listened to any of their albums in a dedicated fashion. This was great! A super fun listen, and it makes "Bohemian Rhapsody" seem slightly less alien when listened to in context. Fave track - I mean, "Bohemian Rhapsody" is just ridiculously good, and a karaoke get-the-whole-room-yelling-along classic. "The Prophet's Song" seems almost as epic, and I'd never heard it before, so that feels like an awesome discovery!
I fell in love with music because of this album. In classical music, in rock, in jazz, in vocal singing. Thank you Queen (10/10) FT: Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of my Life ... actually the whole album
Overrated and overblown although liked Best friend
curto afu há tempo ja
Topalbum, de beste van Queen!
Not a masterpiece but a collection of wonderful singles
It's hard not to be charmed by this album. It's fun and well performed by everyone involved. It's just a classic. Duh. 3 5's in a row? Wow.
Such great stuff on this, even besides "Bohemian Rhapsody," which everyone knows. I mean "You're My Best Friend," " '39," "I'm In Love With My Car" are all great as well. But you can't get around the elephant in the room, can you? It's just too big. I tend to listen to the B-sides / deep cuts of Queen more only because I have heard those greatest hits so often. And BR is one I think I have heard hundreds of time now. It's still a great song, though. The band is firing on all cylinders on just about every song. Not one I would skip at all.
I did not immediately like this album as much as I like their first three; I'm a sucker for harder rock. Don't get me wrong, Death on Two Legs and I'm In Love With My Car are great hard rocking songs, the former a brilliant opener. It was the middle of the album where I was a bit uncertain. But I found when I was already in an amped up mood, this album took it to the next level. And it's far too complex to appreciate in one or two listens. After a few listens, I loved it, especially the more jazzy songs. What was particularly impressive was when I learned that a lot of the cool jazz sounds I learned to like were created through Mercury's and Taylor's vocals (Seaside Rendezvous) or regular instruments (Good Company). May's and Deacon's instrument innovations throughout the album are impressive. You're My Best Friend and Love of My Life are two very different but equally lovely odes. '39 was probably the place where I first started to wonder about the album (maybe May's just ok vocals?), but after a closer listen it's a pretty cool ballad - a cross between Led Zeppelin and John Denver. And I love how Sweet Lady cleanses the palette after. I don't always want to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody I've heard it so many times, but it is a rock opera masterpiece. Still, I think I might like The Prophet's Song just as much for its sweeping, grandiose style; it might be my new favorite on the album. In the end, I think I'm at a 4.5 but I'm rounding up for all the intricacy they put into the album and because they're freakin' legends (and deservedly so).
p351. 1975. 5 stars Yes, it's overblown and over produced camp rock - but it's also an A grade rock band on top form with some cracking tunes and a sense of humour, and that covers a multitude of sins. There is a reason why Queen were so popular and why their songs are still played today, and this is the perfect illustration why. There isn't a weak track on it, although you can argue that The Prophet's Song outstays its welcome. And Brian May seems quite a good guitarist.
Huh, I just had Sheer Heart Attack day before yesterday. That's OK! You can't have too much Queen. A Night At The Opera is not a chore. ...yep...still great. Be my clementine!
Brilliantly original, quirky and inventive. I love how they are doing their own weird ass thing. It remind me a couple of times of McCartney with the very silly and British “show tunes”. But then mix in the epic, soaring opera and blistering hard rock guitar solos. With 2 classic singles and album tracks full of interest, has to be 5 stars.
I needed this. Too many mediocre albums have passed by. I bought this as a kid and played it to death and even 47-odd years later people are still listening to it in droves. So varied- even the 'dodgy' tracks are great (Lazing on a Sunday. I'm in love with my car) and all have a story attached to them. Vocals (and not just Freddies), guitar, bass and drums all top of the game and the production is beyond perfection. Even the one-star reviews admit how mega it all is and base the score on just not being into it's excess. 'Death on two Legs' is my favourite Queen song by the way....If I could give this 1000 stars I would.
Listened to on 4/7/22 5/5 Favorite song: Bohemian Rhapsody, God Save the Queen Simply. Iconic.
A truly eclectic album with so many different instruments and styles. A number of classics with Bohemian Rhapsody (potentially the greatest song of all time) along with You’re My Best Friend and Love of My Life. A very solid 5.
class
A very easy 5 stars. It's crazy how such a massively versatile album can be so consistently excellent. Apart from the somewhat annoying middle-part of The Prophet's Song (not quite the lightning in a bottle that is Bohemian Rhapsody) and the sub-par Good Company, every single track is worthy of the 5 star album score. '39 in particular is a longtime Queen favorite of mine.
FINALLY!
Epic
The number of strong songs on this album is staggering: Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of My Life, '39, You'Re My Best Friend, God Save the Queen. The rest are at least very good. Among the early Queen records, this is easily the most important one. Truly iconic. 5/5
This album is one of my all-time favorites. Listening to it today was fantastic, because it’s a repeat of something I do often. Freddie’s master class on live looping in The Prophet Song is worth the price of admission on its own, but starting with Death on Two Legs? Sheer perfection.
it feels like I’ve heard a hundred different Queen songs but the only ones I knew from this was You’re My Best Friend and of course that which must not be named so it was a pretty pleasant surprise hearing more proggy songs like Death On Two Legs and The Prophet’s Song as well as more Tally Hall vibe songs like Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon or Seaside Rendezvous, though I guess that one’s more Elton John also ‘39 was a whole-ass surprise, who knew Queen made a motherfucking folk song it’s reported that at the time this was the most expensive album ever produced and it sure does sound like it, fucking phenomenal - 10/10
When I was about 13, my mate Peter played me the Prophet's Song on his walkman during a school excursion to the Sydney Opera House (we were there for an afternoon at the opera. Matinee performance of Manon Lescaut.) I didn't think much of the opera, but I loved Queen. He subsequently made me a cassette of Night at the Opera backed with Queen's Greatest Hits. I had been familiar with Bohemian Rhapsody and many of their singles prior to that, but Night at the Opera was the first Queen studio album that I really delved into and played obsessively. I find it hard to approach this record objectively, because of my nostalgic love of the record. Does it have a lot of songs that delve into pastiche and novelty? Yes. Is it almost bombastically over-produced? Well, yes. Is it full of cracking tunes and rocking rock? well, hell yeah! Let's play it again, and louder!
One of the greatest albums I've ever listened to. I love this one through and through. From Death on Two Legs, '39, Sweet Lady, and all the rest. This is Queen at their best.
5/5 what.an.album.
5, really enjoyed this
All around a great album. All good songs, including the monster hit Bohemian Rhapsody. Quite the variety of songs. Easy 5
Legendary album.
2/17/2022 Today's Album: "A Night At The Opera" by Queen - This is an album that I have had on vinyl since around the beginning of the initial 2020 quarantine and in the time it really has not gotten old to me. The reason? This album is one of the best produced albums of the decade. In my opinion, this is a textbook example of how to mix and pan audio to transform it from a basic performance to something that feels beyond instrumentation. The Bohemian Rhapsody movie that came out a few years ago did a great way of showing how much Freddy Mercury wanted to create an LP at the caliber of a theatrical performance and with a good pair of headphones, it absolutely sounds like it. The way Death On Two Legs begins with a gigantic instrumental build before it cuts out to pretty much nothing is absolutely stunning. Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon is a really fun ragtime tune about exactly what the title would imply. I'm In Love With My Car, despite its absurd title, has a ton of really creative sounds in the mix and they are all mixed exceptionally well as well. The song '39 is one that I had on repeat after listening to it because of how enchanting it is. You're put into this bittersweet song about war and forgotten love that tugs on the heart string despite the lyrics being quite vague. It has this deep emotional weight to it and is the best track on the album in my eyes, with two acoustic guitars and the bass playing off each other in a way that gives this song great levity despite the lyrics. Seaside Rendezvous is a really fun piano-focused track that has a really bouncy 20's feel to it, similarly to many other songs on this album. It is a great way to end side 1 of the vinyl with Freddy saying, "Give us a kiss" before one last musical hit. Prophet's Song, being the longest track on the album, is an incredibly dark and menacing track with great chorus vocals and bass work before the track breaks out into a several minute experimental looping and prog rock section. I think it's really well done and despite how long it goes on for, it totally works with the flow of the record. Love Of My Life is, in my opinion, one of the best love songs to ever exist. It's up there with The Beatle's Something and everyone should know this song. It's heartbreaking, but lovely and incredibly well performed by Mercury. Also the harmonies are literally perfect. Like I haven't emphasized it very much yet, but this guy's vocals are NUTSO. Good company is an all around solid track, Classic queen with great guitar work, fast basslines, and a ton of extraneous orchestral instruments. The stringed instrument, which I think is a ukulele(?) is a really nice part of the track and gives it a lot of personality. Bohemian Rhapsody needs no review. It is fucking Bohemian Rhapsody (It sounds funny at 45 speed on the record player lol). God Save the Queen closes off the album and is just the British national anthem. Epic. Overall, this album is really enjoyable from start to finish and more people should hear it because it's some of queen's best work, despite some of it being really overplayed (Really just Bohemian) Score: 9.5/10 "Bloody Brilliant" Highlights: Death On Two Legs, Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, '39, Seaside Rendezvous, The Prophet's Song, Love Of My Life, Good Company
Easy 5 stars. Masterpiece of an album.
iconic album, not 1 bad song
An absolute classic.
nunca fui fãn de queen esse album abriu minha mente
Classic rock is classic. Bohemian Rhapsody is god-level.
I personally think that Queen is kinda overrated, even though I am not gonna lie, it's a beautiful piece of an album, Bohemian Rhapsody is a classic, undoubtedly. The rest of the album isn't just a background of one hit, I really enjoyed it and it has an unique, special vibe
Good album. Really enjoy transitions here.
This is an extraordinary album. It was revolutionary when it came out, and you can still feel that almost 50 years later. I don't know any other group that can successfully interweave such a mix of musical ranges.
Very enjoyable! Has "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "You're My Best Friend"
One of the good ones
This was my first favorite album at the age of 8 or 9. I have probably listened to these tracks more than any other tracks, or at least for the most years. It's hard to analyze these songs objectively. I like how silly a lot of them are. The Skiffle Band influence is on full display here. This is Queen in transition. They are not quite yet the powerhouse arena rock band they became, but they are also growing out of their art school glam rock phase (I mean, they were always glam, let's be honest). Bohemian Rhapsody is so overplayed on the radio that it takes a conscious effort to listen with fresh ears and appreciate its brilliance. That being said, I think Prophet's Song does what BR is also doing, but better. I'm in Love With My Car is the worst song Queen ever wrote, and I'm happy they got it out of the way this early in their discography.
Een album dat blijft verrassen
A Night at the Opera is the fourth studio album by the British rock band Queen, released in 1975. It was the most expensive album ever recorded at the time of its release. It has been hailed as Queen's best album, and one of the greatest albums in music history. Favourite sobgs: "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon", "You're My Best Friend", and of course "Bohemian Rhapsody". Wanted to rate it 4 because overall this record still is not for everyone. But sorry I can't. It's 5/5 without any doubt.
I have said it before and I may say it again...I love Queen! This is an excellent album! There is so much of musical interest to my ears. The variety of musical styles and instrumentation is lovely.
What a glorious piece of work this is. An incredible example of what's possible in rock music. A grand display of hutzpah and talent. I love it very much.
This is an album I know well, as it was in my sister's record collection in my youth and I played it often. But I don't think I've listened to it since she moved out when I was in junior high. So this is an exciting opportunity. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA is nothing short of amazing. "Death on Two Legs" pairs soaring Queen vocals and heavy metal guitars to rip into whoever it was dedicated to. You know you are in for something good. Who else but Queen would then dive right into the tinny vocaled 1920's-ish "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" then with a little guitar solo jump headlong into the hard rock "I'm In Love With My Car" - a wonderful love song to a car. This is really thrilling stuff! I've always loved "You're My Best Friend." That song still makes me incredibly happy as I think of my best friends every time I hear it. I love the electric piano and vocals. Such a wonderful song. "'39" is a total change of pace and I love it. The acoustic guitar driven song is a great listen evoking its sci-fi backstory with great use of vocals and the electric guitar. I don't think I've heard this song in 40 years but as soon as it started I remembered instantly how much I love it. "Sweet Lady" is a straight Queen rocker with some unusual tempo changes that make it quite interesting to listen to. "Seaside Rendezvous" is a 20's sounding piano driven track. I love sailing along over Freddie Mercury's smooth vocalizations imagining the stage show as I sip a Bee's Knees in some illegal club. "The Prophet's Song" is a dire warning accompanied by the heavy guitars and dark vocals as a prophet warns of the flood made famous by Noah's ark. I love the a cappella vocal solo in the middle that give way to a guitar solo. "Love of My Life" is a heart wrenching love song supported mostly by a gorgeous piano arrangement. Beautiful. "Good Company" adds a dixieland style with a ukulele-driven number again providing testament to Queen's incredibly versatility. Remarkable too is that this song precedes the utterly remarkable... "Bohemian Rhapsody" - what can one say about this song? No one would ever have imagined such a song could ever be exist - let alone become a huge hit, becoming one of the most beloved and enduring songs in rock and roll - and probably in all of music history. Listening to it in the context of this album was wonderful. There were a few moments when I could briefly feel what it was like to listen to this for the first time as an eight-year-old kid and being utterly mesmerized. "God Save The Queen" closes A NIGHT AT THE OPERA in a truly epic way. I have chills. I cannot imagine any other group with the audacity and talent to create anything like this album. The songs all come together beautifully to create a transcendent listening experience. While the singles are spectacular on their own, there is nothing like listening to this album as a whole. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA is a masterpiece.
la plus grosse masterclass de ce monde
God, I love this album. It's the flaming cherries jubilee of rock albums. It's decadent and absolutely too much, but incredibly beautiful. I mean, have you ever spent a night at the opera? I have and it really isn’t like this at all, but at the same time, they kind of nail it here. It’s big and luxurious and theatrical and you might just shed a tear before it’s all over. This is probably Queen's most perfectly realized album. It's one of the only ones I can listen to without skipping a track. The production is superb and the band are in the best form of their lives. The layered vocals are stunning, the arrangements absolutely gorgeous. It has all the pomp and majesty and R-O-C-K you want in a Queen album, with plenty of surprises. The way the band breezily sways from twee, old timey confections like "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" or "Seaside Rendezvous" to muscular, complex songs like "Prophet's Song" and "Death on Two Legs" is a sonic joy, something no other band could hope to pull off without sounding ridiculous. Only Queen could put out an absurdity of a song called “I’m in Love with My Car” and not be met with endless derision. Queen gives us permission to let go and indulge as listeners like no one else. They were at heart a killer power trio plus one, the One being Freddie Mercury, rock’s greatest front man, with an operatic vocal range and a flair for the dramatic. It’s the interplay/tension between that huge rock sound and the band’s more elegant, progressive inclinations that creates a singular kind of magic. Throw in a little winking, campy humor and you have a style of music that delivers on every level. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is of course the star of the whole production. Queen does more musically with this song than most bands could hope to do with an entire album. The pathos, the grandeur, the bombast, the humor, the strutting rock assault. Yes, this song gets played a lot, but there's a reason why. There's nothing else in the world like it. Fave Songs (All songs, in order from most to least favorite): Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend, Death on Two Legs, Love of My Life, Seaside Rendezvous, The Prophet's Song, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, '39, Sweet Lady, Good Company, God Save the Queen, I'm In Love With My Car
A classic, Bohemian Rhapsody was a song I didnt like as a teenager, but love now, a personal example of musical growth
This album gets 4/5 just got Bohemian Rhapsody alone. The rest of the record easily takes it over the top.
Concepção grandiosa e fundamental
Freddie just knows how to do it to you
It's so good. So much variety and incredible performances vocally and musically. I was also surprised how many of these songs I didn't even know I knew. There was only one or two I hadn't heard before. What a great album! Favourite Tracks: (Besides the classics) Death On Two Legs, I'm In Love With My Car, Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon, Seaside Rendezvous
I hadn't listened to this album as a whole before and it was great. Lots of songs I knew and some I didn't. Dynamic, and beautiful. Favourite songs: You're My Best Friend, Seaside Rendezvous, Bohemian Rhapsody
It starts so heavy and powerful, then gets a little dorky. You're my best friend is such a feel good moment. There's a switch to a more folksy sound with '39 before heading back to classic rock. Seaside Rendezvous is full ridiculous campy cabaret I would have loved to see live in a small theatre. Prophet's Song is a little too rock opera and inconsistent for me. I couldn't figure out if Good Company featured a banjo or ukelele and learned of the combo instrument for the first time. How quirky and fun. Bohemian Rhapsody, what a masterpiece. Not possible to listen without joining in. Didn't really need the patriotic closer, but wow what a tight set of tracks showcasing real DYNAMIC range.
Genre bending, sing a long operatic rock. I can see the influence on bands like Mr Bungle
This album is the favorite of a person that played a crucial role in my past. Listening to these songs after all these years unpacks profound memories. Freddie’s voice is sublime. Love of my life, You’re my best friend are songs that will ever live in the collective conscience, let alone Bohemian Rhapsody… It is a fascinating trip, a piece of art.
Campy and ambitious, this album is the pinnacle of 70s rock excess. The vocal arrangements are genius and the meticulous and uncompromising layering of music stands apart. Brian May is one of my favorite guitarists and his Dixieland jazz layered solo in ‘Good Company’ is one of his best with the guitar simulating an entire brass section including a sliding trombone. Of course, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is the climax of this album. That song is iconic on its own, but within the context of the album it becomes even greater. I adore this album
How could I do anything but love this album? Such an iconic set of tracks, a legendary voice gone too soon. A roaring triumph of an album with a bold set of classical influences. I love that Queen manages to be both highbrow and utterly weird. Fave track: Bohemian Rhapsody, duh.
