Reviews (page 7 of 14)
Hadn't listened to this and there are some genuinely brilliant tracks on here that are instantly some of their best work. Some of the others are just fine, not bad, not good, just fine, and that's what stops it from being 5 stars!

Great album, a fun listen. Favorite songs: Death On Two Legs, Sweet Lady, Bohemian Rhapsody
Timeless and for the generations.
Two Queen albums in the same week? Hello algorithm?!?!? Ok, let’s see what the A Night At The Opera brings us apart from “You’re My Best Friend” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” which I know so well.
Very much hit and miss. Feels like an prog rock album and a throw away one mashed together. However two or three of the songs push it to a four
Brent really, really loves this album and was excited to listen with me. He sung and bopped along. What a fun way to spend an evening together. I felt it started great and ended great, but was a bit of a lull in the middle. Favorite Songs: Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon - I love the sound effects, the pick-me-up pace of the guitar as well, and the lyrics are a joy. You’re My Best Friend - This makes me feel like I’m in a 2000 romcom opening sequence, getting ready. Such a happy song. ‘39 - I like the storytelling element of this song. Bohemian Rhapsody - I think everyone knows this one at this point. What a range of a song.
More rocking that operatic. Sorta. A classic.
I feel like I have a complicated relationship with Queen. I liked them quite a bit when I was young but I've been of two minds on their "campiness" as I've gotten older. A Night At The Opera has the best and worst of that in some ways. Death on Two Legs is both very cool but also kinda embarrassing to listen to, not sure I can articulate why. Obviously Bohemian Rhapsody is the pinnacle of this dichotomy (I'm sorry I used that word): it's terribly corny but also rocks really hard. The Prophet Song is not good. This is a rambling review but there is just this niggling theater kid energy on this record that I don't like HOWEVER ... News of the World doesn't really feel like that to me so don't discount me as a Queen hater. I'm still giving it a 4!!
Listening Notes Just a ripper of an opener Much more eclectic than I thought How did I not know that these dudes are basically prog rock nerds... Standout Tracks "Death on Two Legs", "You're My Best Friend", "'39", "The Prophet's Song", "Bohemian Rhapsody" First time? Surprisingly, yes Will it go into your rotation? Forget the greatest hits comps, the full albums are where the goods are
Wonderful
A Night At The Opera is like sitting through a glorious, over the top variety show that refuses to sit still. One moment I’m headbanging to the biting, vengeful energy of "Death On Two Legs", and the next, I’m whisked away into the whimsical music hall charm of "Seaside Rendezvous" or the twinkling space folk of "'39". The production is absolutely meticulous, a dense, layered masterpiece where the studio itself feels like a fifth band member. While "Bohemian Rhapsody" is the undeniable crown jewel that anchors the experience, the album's true strength lies in its fearless genre hopping, from hard rock and prog to ragtime and opera and everything in between.
Here we go! Looking at the tracklist, lots I didn’t recognize, and makes sense. Few non-traditional non-radio songs in here, quite a diverse offering. Epic intro with some smooth transitions making it feel like a rock opera, You’re My Best Friend highlights the opening half. Sweet Lady was a pleasant surprise, heavier, 3/4 time with some buildup points and speedy parts. Seaside Rendezvous felt very queen, very theatrical, silly, colourful and bouncy. Prophet’s Song - cool, still very theatrical/musical, but a darker scene and conflict. Middle echoey call/return bit was a bit offputting, but enjoyed the ending. Love of my Life - enjoyed it even more in the context of the album, beautiful song, my pick of the lot. Good Company - cool sounds, ukelele, guitar, SpongeBob intro song vibes, surprising fun find. We all know what happens next, what more needs to be said? Can’t not put this as the best. 3.5/5
I don't know why I didn't think I'd enjoy this one, but I was surprised at how much I liked it. For some reason I think I expected it to be 11 slightly different versions of Bohemian Rhapsody (which doesn't make sense since I've definitely heard other Queen songs) but it really felt like a much more varied and balanced album. 4.4 stars, definitely fucks.
Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the greatest songs of all time. However, the tracks surrounding the big hitters on this album are quite forgettable. Just shy of a 5.
with this album, you can clearly tell where queen crossed the bridge to reach their full potential. thank you queen for taking such a risk and taking us listeners on a JOURNEY favorites: you're my best friend; the prophet song; bohemian rhapsody
.
8/10 Best songs: You're My Best Friend, The Prophet's Song, Bohemian Rhapsody A boundary-pushing, extraordinarily creative album. In some ways I don't quite understand how Bohemian Rhapsody came from this album, in some ways I do (it's even more out there than the rest of the album). I really appreciate all the peaks and valleys - this album never gets mired in the same sound. There are a couple reasons the album misses out on a perfect score. First, the songs leading up to Bohemian Rhapsody are either reheating its nachos (Love of My Life) or just really dull (Good Company). Second, something just doesn't quite click... There's a lack of emotion, maybe? I'm not sure. The album is an almost-but-not-quite kind of situation.
An excellent album.
Iconic
Bangs but not most
La mitad son qué carajo y la otra temones Bohemian rhapsody en el medio de calle corrientes es una experiencia 10/10
At their best, Queen is bombastic, operatic and awesome. There are plenty of songs on this album that fit that mold. When they veer outside those guardrails, which they do a few times, things get pretty grim pretty fast.
4⭐️/5 01.19.2026
bueno, a classic, tops; death in two legs, the prophets song, obviously bohemian rhapsody
own
Classic love bohemian rapsoda Love love love
Queen is not my favourite band but this album was better than I expected.
A Night at the Opera felt like a high-wire act of musical ambition. What makes this record truly special for me is that I loved watching the performances as much as I enjoyed listening to them. The studio production is of course legendary for its "wall of sound" layers, seeing these songs come to life on stage adds an entirely different dimension. A huge part of that pull is, of course, Freddie Mercury. He has an electric vibe unlike most others in rock history; hell, any musical history. Favorite songs - Bohemian Rhapsody The Prophet’s Song You’re My Best Friend Love of My Life Rating 1-5 ~ 4
Album that has bohemian rapshody.
Tracks I've heard before: Bohemian Rhapsody Death On Two Legs You're My Best Friend Love Of My Life In no particular order: Top 3: You're My Best Friend Sweet Lady Bohemian Rhapsody Bottom 3: Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon Seaside Rendezvous God Save The Queen
Disappointingly boring icl… Maybe it’s because I had it on as background noise but wow. Bohemian Rhapsody still 20/10 though and forever will be!!!!!
I was about 17 when I first heard this and I wasn't a fan at all. Given my age I was more into the hard rock of the time. As the years passed I became more accepting of Queen. This one deserves props for its longevity and worldwide appeal.
It's tempting to bump this to a 5 for Bohemian Rhapsody alone, but I find the rest of the album is just solid, not extraordinary.
From driving rock, to acoustic stomp and clap, to “opera”. Queen is just Queen. Much of Queen is too glam and dramatic for my taste. Mercury’s voice is unique and ridiculously good… Although is it me or is there a bit of channeling Robert Plant in spots ( In Love With My Car) and then “Lazing…” totally channels some Beatles before breaking into the signature Brian May guitar. Then You’re My Best friend is cheese and Broadway. Do not like that schlock. On to ‘39 with its acoustic flavor with a stomp and clap kicking in, and then like Woody Guthrie. But then the little opera interlude. Queen. Haha! Like this one until the opera crap bars. Sweet Lady sucks. Seaside Rendezvous is quintessential Queen. And not for me. Man, this record is all over the place. Back half of the record goes pure theatrically opera. Is it genius or unfocused experimentation that doesn’t do anything original and just tries or to copy lots of other styles with a dramatic flare and backing vocals added? Probably somewhere in the middle. But Bohemian Rhapsody is an undeniable all-timer. I mean on the strength of Bohemian Rhapsody alone, this album has to get at least a 4 (even though I really don’t personally like this at all).
I had a long review, then got pulled into meetings and it disappeared. I love this album. It has all time classics (you’re my best friend and bohemian rhapsody) deep cut bangers (death on two legs and prophets song) classic 80s rock songs (I’m in love with my car and 39) and some great bridge songs/fades in and out from one song to the next. You only ever hear about Freddie mercury, but damn do the guitars shred on this album. Will get you in a good mood. A great album that I will listen to again and I suggest you do too. 4 stars.
Got better with each song
above average i guess
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I naively had not listened to much Queen besides the really popular ones but I actually really like their style and the lyrics are interesting. Saved the album after the second listen so that is always a good sign. Think it is one I will come back to for sure.
classic-classic rock
Kind of a surprise to hear so much more Music Hall (granny music) than I remembered. Fun listen overall, a few great tracks and a stage musical waiting to be put together.
Classic.
Queen is awesome on many levels. No one in the pop universe is more creative or theatrical. Bohemian Rhapsody is one of Pops greatest achievements. My Best Friend— great song. And the band’s talent level is off the charts. Still, I wouldn’t play this album on repeat; I need to be in a certain mood for that match theatricality. It’s a 4. RIP Freddie!
An album with multiple near 10's (Bohemian Rhapsody a 10)
Segundo disco de Queen que me toca en esto. Nunca me entra bien tío.
Absolutely bonkers, but in a good way. You just never know what to expect next, but it all comes together pretty well. And Bohemian Rhapsody is a stone cold classic
Oddly enough, I've never listened to this classic album before. It's definitely an album you have to hear.
Excellent album! Incredible sound, so new and operatic. Love it!
Of course this is a great album
Bold and the complete package
Can't believe I've never listened to this all the way through. Some old faves and new discoveries!
I just discovered that the queen had a diverse genre of music and through this album I just found out that they sing country song. For the first listen, it was okay but thinking back then it would have been such a phenomenal album without any edits or autotune and I am obsessed with their harmonization. My favourite song of the album was the prophet song which had a seamless transition with the love of my life.
Freddy is the BEST part. Very all in, melodic rock, sound a bit out of date though
This is such an eclectic album and Queen know exactly what they're doing. Every song feels upbeat and anthemic in its own right - a really enjoyable listen.
slaps
Pure excellence! “I’m in Love with My Car” is one of my favorite songs of theirs. The guitar work and tone is face melting! Gimme more!
amazing wonderful great I love freddie mercury
I like this Album 👀👀
Yayyyy queen!!
yay queen! first time i’ve listened an entire queen album! 4.5/5
I forgot what the album was called and said “this is like a rock opera” very thematic. Death On Two Legs Bohemian Rhapsody (obvi)
Im definitely biased bc i really love queen so I saved 10/13 songs, 4/5 Freddie Mercury crowns 👑
Freddy Mercury is undeniably an all time talent. So many different voices and even characters in his performance. The record shines when he is the focus and has space to perform. The record as whole though, honestly, isn’t quite as cohesive as I remember. There are multiple points where it feels like they are just doing things because they wanted to mess around with the studio space instead of it actually serving the record or songs. Brian May’s multi-tracked harmony guitar becomes tiresome after a whole record. Love of my Life is a treasure. I weirdly loved ‘39. Bohemian Rhapsody is always a treat. Still an all-time classic record, but I do think it sounds dated in spots. 4/5.
A sound reminiscent of a Monty Python, or Mr Show, episode.
i can def see the appeal. i recognized a couple tracks in there
Very good record. Not a huge Queen fan but this listen was a lot of fun. Lots of diverse music genres in here. Loved track 3 - I’m just not a huge Freddie vocals guy. Rhapsody is another clear standout (obviously)
Classic
This album was very entertaining, I love all the different instruments and unique beats. I also love how every song is like a story that captures so many different emotions. I have never listened to an album like this before. I would definitely listen to this album again, maybe when I’m cleaning or singing in the car alone. My favorite songs were You’re My Best Friend, ‘39, Love of my Life, and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Awesome album. Got some classics with some great deep cuts. Candidly, Queen isn’t a band I typically seek out to listen to, but they’re clearly amazing.
Loml and BH are always 10/10 a few surprises- prophets song, lazy on a Sunday afternoon is enjoyable I’m in love with my car 1/10 how was this going to be the single!!?? Death on two legs was shocking, who is this about??
7.5/10
Pretty good start to the albums, liked ‘39
v energetic, v fun, im in love with my car sucks shit. like seaside rondevouz and obv boh rap is 10/10. SOLID 4
It's really strong, full of emotion and interesting nuggets that are kinda specific to their sound. I just think, with so many risks, some are bound to not pay off as well as others but it is mature and great
I enjoyed listening at A Night At The Opera. As always I like listening to the voice of Freddy Mercury and again the texts truly resonate with me. Special shutout to I’m In Love With My Car and Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon.
It’s Queen baby, let’s get it Weirdly I don’t have a lot to say about this album. It’s Queen, it’s good, bohemian rhapsody in particular is a classic. But it isn’t sticking with me like a couple others on the list so far have
Amazing, theatrical, dramatic, sad!!! This album surprised me in how easily I connected with my imagination, picturing characters, settings and plots. Loooooved it.
accecati dall’impossibile perfezione di bohemian rhapsody abbiamo lasciato che la facessero franca con i’m in love with my car. tutto molto goofy.
Liked 9 out of 12 songs. A great album with classics like Love Of My Life and Bohemian Rhapsody but there are other songs that deserve recognition in my opinion. I really liked '39, Sweet Lady and oddly enough The Prophet's Song. Not really a fan of I'm In Love With My Car, even though musically it's fire. Definitely a great album worth a listen
2011 remaster* track 1: death on two legs - the piano at the start locked me the freak in hello - death on two leeeeeeeegs 6/10 track 2: lazing on a sunday afternoon - jolly as hell - an interlude of some sort - not bad but its short 4.2/10 track 3: i'm in love with my car - this'll probably be me when i get a car 4.6/10 track 4: you're my best friend - instantly recognisable - fun and joyous 😛😛 - ouuuuu ur making me live 8/10 track 5: '39 - sounds like da olden days and i like it - i like the high notes in the background 7.5/10 track 6: sweet lady - sweet laydeyyyyeah - incredible riffs - good song but it wouldn't be on my playlist 6.4/10 track 7: seaside rendezvous - sounds like something you would hear in the background of a classical bar - i like the goofy instruments 6.7/10 track 8: the prophet's song - longest track on the album - the effects on the "now i know" parts are extremely cool and worth taking note of. i'll definitely come back to that in the future and do something inspired by that. - i was going to skip this because i was quite tired, but this was 100% worth listening to - this COULD be my favourite song on the album, i dont know yet (edit: it beat bohemian rhapsody by 0.1) 9.7/10 track 9: love of my life - transitioned really nicely with the last song - i rlly like the harps - do i know this song? it probably sounds similar from bohemian rhapsody's intro/verse lead 9/10 track 10: good company - groovy as heck - i love it when songs have a beat change but it isnt a beat change 7.4/10 track 11: bohemian rhapsody - IS THIS THE REAL LIIIFE OR IS THIS FANTASYYYYY - classically classic - everything actually - this is a song every theatre king has sung on the top of their lungs before and i kinda understand it now - genshin impact ruined this song for me 9.6/10 track 12: god save the queen - thought this was gonna be the british anthem and i was correct, but its still a banger - good arrangement - not playlist worthy tho 4.9/10 this album is good at breaking the repetition cycle at the right time. rock royalty. calculated 7/10 because 1 third was below 5, but it deserves an extra 0.5 7.5/10 december 23rd 2025
GOODDD
Dette albumet er mye mer differensiert og variert enn jeg trodde!!
Shit. I gotta be honest, I never liked Queen. That's actually not true, I liked their harder stuff...Stone Cold Crazy, Brighton Rock, Another One Bites The Dust...and yeah, everyone loves Bohemian Rhapsody. I just never liked all the other stuff. The operatic, silly, bombastic, the tender stuff...like, I've always hated You're My Best Friend. And it's not that I think they're bad musicians, far from it. They're all great, it just wasn't for me. You've gotta be at the right place in your life sometimes for music or movies to hit you right and grab a hold of you and for whatever reason the rest of Queen's music never grabbed me. I've tried listening to this before, probably like everyone else after the movie that came out about 10 years ago and Queen/Freddie went through their renaissance. I listened to it once, never wanted to listen to it again. So, I rolled my eyes at this when it came up this morning. And I guess I'm at a different place in my life where this music finally hits. All of a sudden, You're My Best Friend isn't so bad. I'm actually enjoying most of this and I'm on my 2nd spin. Not sure if I can quite give this a 5, but I'm tempted.
p good, queen really got it like that huh
listened while swatching my watercolors:)
A crazy, silly, brilliant album that perfectly sums up the very peculiar genius of Queen. No one else can mix pop, glam rock, country music and cabaret tunes in one album and get away with it... This mad melting pot of genres and influences is held together by Freddie Mercury's charisma and by talented musicians who effortlessly jump from style to style. To be honest, this is not really my kind of music, in the sense that it's not something I'd spontaneously listen to ; I don't personally vibe with it, but it's hard not to acknowledge the talent and creativity at work here. Bohemian Rhapsody alone is such an epic song that it makes up for the worst filler track of the album (yes, I'm talking about the car song). 7/10
Queen are undeniable. Flamboyant, creative, instantly recognizable. Mercury’s voice, May’s guitar, the choirs : everything sounds like Queen, no matter the style. Not everything works, though. “’39”, with its Take Me Home, Country Roads feel, is weaker, and the album can feel uneven. Still, it’s ambitious, weird, and full of great moments. The guitar harmonies and prog excess are unique, and even after a few listens, it still surprises. You can feel these guys were really deep into their music.
Objectively a good album, just not fully my genre and taste.
Normally I am not one for the theatrics of Queen but the highs on this album are so iconically high that I cannot deny how much it rips. Death on two legs: crazy. You're my best friend: adorable. Prophets song: sick. Bohemian Rhapsody: well. of course. 3.5/5, upgraded to a four. (B++)
Classic Queen album
A mixed bag - some very good songs, and some utter crap. One extra star for Bohemian Rhapsody, minus one for playing Sun City.
The highs are really high here, obviously. It's fun and innovative, and there are cool sonic experiments. But there's also some kind of run-of-the-mill prog rock on this record that can be a little too much. On balance, a very good, not great album.
Listening to this album in full proves that "Bohemian Rhapsody" truly was a lightning in the bottle moment for western music. Yeah we've all heard it a million times, but seriously, what an incredible achievement that song is. RIP Freddie. Beyond "Bohemian" and "Best Friend" there's quite a bit of fluff in this thing, which feels emblematic of the direction and feel of most 70s-era progressive rock. But even at the dull low points, Brian May's guitar sounds rather lovely (acoustic and electric) and Freddie is, well, Freddie. And as a drummer myself, I can't help but defend "I'm In Love with My Car" to some degree -- it's one of the songs written of all time! By the drummer! Super cheesy, yes, but sonically it's engaging and fairly interesting (unlike "The Prophet's Song" which really didn't need to be 8+ mins long...) If "Car" was performed by almost any other band of the era, it would likely be one of that band's biggest hits... but alas, it shares the same vinyl as "Bohemian" so we're all just gonna point and laugh.
A good sampling of Queen's abilities. Not as popular as other albums, but this is the album that brough Bohemian Rhapsody to the world, so it's worth a good listen.
It's Queen! It was a great album.
Feels weird to listen to without a Day at the Races First, but here we are! Highlight this listen: Love of My Life
Álbum com muitas pedradas, tem umas músicas que eu não gosto tanto, mas tem umas que é full clássico. Very gud.
Incredible.
Revisit
What a range and great to listen to. Very good album.
Some bangers and some okay songs.
Iconic
First 2 songs are great starts. Not a fan of I’m in love with my car. You’re my best friend is a classic. Love the harmonies on the album, throughout most of the songs they have background vocals which add a bit of spice to the tracks. ‘39 is Brian May’s song and it’s a nice vibe. Lots of different styles on this album and you can tell they experimented with a few different instruments on this record. Favourite song on the album is love of my life.
Camp, fun, just like an actual opera
Bohemian Rhapsody and a few more bangers, plus some lighthearted silliness, and we nearly have a 5 star album. But I cannot give 5 stars to an album with whatever the hell is going on in The Prophets Song.
It's a pretty good album. Some songs don't sound like typical Queen songs. Vocals are great and some catchy songs. I'll give it a 4
MAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA OOOOHOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOH album name makes complete sense with how the album feels and it's actually got a lot of good songs. even the songs that aren't crazy good are still sonically interesting and fun to listen to. i like the instrumentation and freddie mercury's voice is all time goated fav songs: bohemian rhapsody (peak), '39, the prophet's song, death on two legs. SCARAMOUCHE SCARAMOUCHE WILL YOU DO THE FANDANGO 4/5
A classic record with a couple mid songs. The album is sleek, operatic, and at times a bit silly. The guitar work is sleek and unmistakably Queen. The Prophet's Song is super underrated.
Queen's best album, no doubt. I will say the more straight forward rock tracks are generally the weak points on this album (I'm In Love With My Car, Sweet Lady, Love of My Life). But then you got the epics like Bohemian Rhapsody and The Phophet's Spmg which are fantastic. Along with those, you got the silly cuts like Seaside Rendezvous and Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon. Special shout to Death on Two Legs though. At one point my favorite Queen song, and one that just goes hard.
Really fun listen
i likey
Great album, even if there are a few lulls
Would buy.
1 punkt abzug für den nervigen Prophet Song
Loved! I love Bohemian Rhapsody and Love of My Life. I really like You’re my Best Friend. I enjoyed the whole album.
Its queen and not even their best album but it has one of the best tunes of all time included.
5/10 mais bon SCARAMOUCH quand même.
I mean Bohemian rhapsody…
Definitely a classic. A lot of songs I’ve heard before but the whole album is well thought out and interesting to listen to.
Phenomenal. Wonderful.
sooo fucking good. 4.5 only because i dont care that much for '39 personally.
Imagine hearing this for the first time in 1975. Must have been mind-blowing. All building up to Bohemian Rhapsody. I've never actually listened to a Queen album (other than a greatest hits compilation). This was a revelation.
Great band, great singers. Songs that will last forever.
This is a super fun album! It's cool to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody within its original context - I have heard the song too much in my life to fully enjoy it anymore, but it is objectively great and I appreciate it more amongst the rest of the album. I'm aware that You're My Best Friend and Love of My Life are the other two big hits from this album, but my most-enjoyed songs were actually Death on Two Legs, The Prophets Song, and '39. Freddie Mercury's vocals are excellent, and it was nice to hear Brian May on a couple of tunes too. I appreciate that the songs on the album are quite varied, with several different styles represented. I like inclusion of sillier songs like Lazing On A Sunday, Seaside Rendezvouz, and God Save The Queen. The theatrical quality of this album represents the title of 'A Night At The Opera' well. Worst song is I'm In Love With My Car lol. All in all, this is an 8.5/10 for me.
Algún que otro hit, el resto son canciones buenas pero no trascendentales.
almost perfect
I really like the theatricality of this album. I think I might like Sheer Heart Attack more, though I can see this album being a 5/5 on the right day. 4.4/5
Here we go. Queen I can get behind. This album had a lot of good songs and they work standalone and also within the album. I was surprised hearing the little motifs show up a few times. 4/5
Was not expecting the folk song at the end? I’m kinda in the camp that Queen is a greatest hits band over an album band, but this was good.
I love Queen. I say that as a person who has experienced them through a few “greatest hits” albums. This album, “A Night at the Opera” is my first exposure to a complete album from them. From beginning to end. Radio hits mixed in with other experimental album material I’ve never heard. First off, there was no way that this album could be anything “less” than a 3 simply by containing a masterpiece like “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Add in other exceptional gems like “You’re My Best Friend”, “Death on Two Legs”, “I’m in Love with my Car” and “39” and this album moves to a solid 4 territory. The problem is that is where it stalls. Not saying that the rest of the songs are bad. They aren’t. Despite the intentionally weird 1920’s vaudevillian sound of several tracks (which I kinda dig) and a couple of operatic acapella trysts, the “filler” stuff on this album just doesn’t stand out to me. I think it is just too much genre blending going on to pull everything together and push this album over the top.

Eccentric, fun, excellent.
It has one of the greatest songs ever recorded on it. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is undeniable. If you don't like that song, I can't help you. There are some really good songs on this record and there is certainly some filler.
Mamaaaaaaaaaa oooooooooooohhhhhh Classic album, never listened to it in full but Queen never misses. ‘39 and I’m in love with my car are the standouts
My favorite song is 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' but other than that, it's 'My Best Friend.' Another random Song I kind of like is 'Lazy on a Sunday Afternoon,' even though it is very short, I also like how it blends into the next song. I'm in love with my car. Brian May's guitar playing is outstanding in this album. Freddie Mercury's vocals are also incredible as always.
Another great record by this great band
Was never on the wagon with Queen. Their iconic songs were always that, but the rest of their stuff always left me a little meh. Mercury’s voice is the star of the show of course.
Fun fun fun.
Better than the White album. Enjoyrd this.
Solid 7/10. - Awesome concept of an album. - Definitely the foundations of the later Queen Discography. - A stupendous listen!
8 / 10
An album with Bohem Rap can't be any less than 4 stars
I like the Prophet Song. I like the Lazing Sunday song. The Good Company song felt very Beatles to me. Appreciate the use of harp and ukulele and just all the great guitar riffs. And of course Bohemian Rhapsody is truly a classic, beyond iconic song. But I don’t think I can give the album a 5 just because of that. It’s really good. But I don’t think it’s a 5 for me.
I’ve always thought of Queen as one of those bands with absolute bangers but not really any notable albums. But this one proved me wrong. There’s the mega hits, for sure, but the overall album is equally effective. Not quite a 5, but a strong 4. The Prophet’s Song should not have made the final cut, though. Save that for the deluxe edition. 4/5 Highlights: Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon ‘39 Love Of My Life Bohemian Rhapsody God Save The Queen
It's Queen! What more do you need to know
It's got quite the variety of music. The Prophet's Song is quite weird, but I guess so is Bohemian Rhapsody and that has really grown on me. The rest is pretty good with some nice guitar shredding mixed in.
I always forget that Dixieland is about 15% of Queen’s vibe. Somehow they make it work. Speaking of crimes against humanity, in the ever increasing likelihood that aliens will invade our planet and threaten to destroy us unless we convince them otherwise of humanity’s worth, I’d say having the aliens listen to Bohemian Rhapsody has about a good a chance as any other evidence to spare us.
Legends. The Prophet’s Song is trash, though, and drug this done to a 4.
If it wasn't for Seaside Rendezvous and The Prophet's Song which really irritate me, this would be a perfect album! I will still listen to it on repeat
The presence of Bohemian Rhapsody makes it start at a 4 because it's too much of a banger. That being said, the rest of the album is not particularly excellent, though there are some other good listens in there. Do I want to listen to the full album again? Probably not. Do I want to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody again? 100%. Without it the album would've probably been a 3.5.
I do miss Freddie.
I stand by my hot take that the best Queen record is their Greatest Hits. BUT.. if it weren't the Greatest Hit, it would obviously be A Night At The Opera. Besides the obvious bangers on this one, its fun how they kind of tease Bohemian Rhapsody throughout. It kind of gives it a bit more context than just Wayne's World. Which does make it fun. I got this album in probably 11th Grade, and my favorite song on it is still '39. That song is out of control. Space inspired country??? Wild. Also, The Prophet's Song is so sick. Its fun to hear Queen in the context of them trying to be a Glam Prog Band. Its not really what they're good at. I love the ambition, but they were never going to be David Bowie. But its fun to give context to the undeniable bangers of the rest of their catalogue.
3.5 - Good
It has Bohemian Rhapsody...
Pretty good album. It’s got Bohemiam Rhapsody, so it’s already an all-timer. I’ve heard Bohemian Rhapsody before but the rest of the album was all pretty much new to me. A lot of Queen “deep cuts” so to say on here. It’s got some weird moments, but overall it's still pretty good.
Well arranged sounds with soaring guitars and beautifully layered vocal tracks. Almost a perfect album
Thought this was going to be a dream but not as many bangers as expected
I think the hits put this into 4 territory. Slumps here and there but great vocal and guitar work.
I hadn't ever listened to this full record. Better than I expected
Great album, hate that i dont like a lot of the songs as they have been played to death
Hard rock masterpiece You're my best friend Bohemian rhapsody The prophet's song
The only Queen album I've heard before and presumably their best.
Классика. Отличный альбом
ok FINE queen is good it's just soooo dramatic it's a lot to handle but yes it's very good okay leave me alone
Some great songs on this LP. Of course the rock anthem Bohemian Rhapsody but also You're My Best Friend and the klitchy I'm in Love With My Car also the lengthy The Prophet's Song. A little too much sniffle type music for me though.
All-time Classic. Maybe Queens greatest album
This is such a strange album. It has Bohemian Rhapsody and Death on Two Legs on the same album as I'm in Love With My Car. Granted, that's just Queen. They really were never album people, more "produce as much varied music as possible until the public picks something up" people. That something was Bohemian Rhapsody, so this album is 4 stars at a minimum by default. I really like most of the songs on this album, though. The Prophet's Song and '39 are incredibly overlooked and the whole album feels very Queen in every way, sometimes for better, and sometimes for I'm in Love With My Car or God Save the Queen.
твердая 4, но только за небольшое количество бенгеров.
יש כמה שירים די פחות טובים אבל סך הכול זה כנראה השיא של קווין וזה שווה 4 כוכבים כל יום
Having ‘You’re My Best Friend’, ‘Love Of My Life’ & ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ on the same album, you’d expect a 5 star album. Considering the classic sounds of May’s brilliant guitar work & Mercury’s iconic vocals throughout, alongside the undeniable sound of classic Queen hitting all the right notes, there’s no doubt that this is a great album. However, for me there’s one or two songs that don’t fit, and actually jar slightly. I really wanted to give this 5/5 but if I’m being realistic, 4/5 is about right.
4,5
Ptet un classique mais a part bohemian ya plu personne
Some of Queen’s best work. I love theatrics and Queen was one of the most theatrical bands of their time. I would say it goes without saying that Freddie’s vocals are magnificent, but I would like to give some appreciation to the harmonies, whether they be from multiple members or just Freddie’s overdubbed vocals, as they have this grand quality that I haven’t heard replicated much. I will say, despite the incredible quality that these songs can reach, some of the songs that don’t quite reach that height feel sort of overshadowed by the rest of the album. In particular, I don’t care much for Sweet Lady and Good Company. I can’t really say why for Sweet Lady, but it just doesn’t click, maybe it will on relistens. For Good Company, it feels a bit out of place on side 2 when side 1 had all the whimsical British stuff, and it also comes right Bohemian Rhapsody. Speaking of which, I feel that songs impact diminished for me a bit because I’ve heard it so many times, but it’s still great. It also helped me find one of my favorite genres, prog rock. What did surprise me was The Prophet’s Song because I had assumed BR would be the most far out song on the album, but this song was amazing. 4/5
A really good album that I own and have listened to yet don’t really recognize.
More prog rock that I remember
Classic
Good album but not enough A list songs to push it to a 5
I don't know that I've ever listened to an entire Queen album, and this was a pleasant surprise. It was not the slog I expected. There's just so much going on, and I appreciate the bold choices they made. While decades in the rock canon has worn down the edges of "Bohemian Rhapsody," it remains probably the weirdest hit rock song out there. I don't know that Queen will ever be a go-to for me, but I enjoyed giving this a listen.
Of course I’ve heard Bohemian Rhapsody, but never the full album - I didn’t even know this was the album it was on. That colossus of a song alone would merit a high score, but even before it popped up at the end, I thought this was one of the stronger Queen albums. Just a good time all around.
I really thought Queen was a singles band, but damn! This was great through and through. And I don’t think I’ve ever actually listened to Bohemian Rhapsody, despite knowing every word somehow, and oh my gosh … did you know how amazing that song is?
The album did feel like you were attending a show/opera/classical concert at times. Good cohesion and flow throughout the album.
One hit song does not an album make. I think that they would have done better getting more of this on the radio, because there's genius on here that's undersung. There's a variety of styles and moods, but none of it cohesive. My Rating: 4/5
Upon my first listen the album seemed a bit too theatrical, but after re-listening I like this a lot more. Best songs: Death on Two Legs, '39, Bho Rap, I'm In Love With My Car
The seamless, shimmering production and stylistic menagerie mash together into some kind of glorious, proggy-pop pipe bomb. I still find my attention wandering elsewhere, though, and I still think that’s because in the furious blitz of forms and techniques, the unifier is Mercury’s voice. I respect the band’s democratic approach to songwriting, but it leaves a mildly unsatisfying sense of semi-coherence. Still, I think this is about as good as that approach would ever get for them.
This fucks especially the first track but why is there a country/folk number in the middle of it that never gets called back
Like many other albums from Queen, A Night At The Opera is a rather uneven whole. A more accurate term might be mixed in a positive way. The songs drift from one side to the other and at times it feels like the album is a collection rather than a coherent album. Despite this, it's hard for me not to like this.
didn’t expect to discover those sounds in queen discography, been impressed
Not Queen's best but some good bangers here
8.6
I’m generally not a big Queen fan (their fans are obnoxious and act like Queen invented music itself and just compete for who can be a bigger try hard for them) but they’re objectively good and successful. Most of this album wasn’t my taste but I can’t give an album with bohemian rhapsody anything less than a 4. It’d just be disrespectful
Quite the rollercoaster. In isolation you hear BoRhap and think it is all over the place in terms of genres, and then you hear it in this album and it makes more sense. Overall I enjoyed this
A really solid album. Enjoyed it
Strong 4. There were a few songs though that I was happy when they ended.
dani and david don't like, but I enjoyed!
This album had a lot more hits than the other Queen album we had. Definitely proggy and opera-y (no surprise). Just a good old fashioned rock out!
This was all pretty solid. Only knew the 2 hits from it but enjoyed everything else enough. Good Company sounded like Paul McCartney. Not much to say about You're My Best Friend and obviously Bohemian Rhapsody which is one of the greatest songs of all time. Love that it's pretty much 3 songs mashed into one ala Band on the Run and A Day in the Life.
Couple of absolute classics! Few also rans but great listen
No real standout songs aside from the obvious. Always a joy to listen to Freddie Mercury sing, scrapes a 4
39, best friend made this even prior to bohemian rhapsody. Lost it self a bit mid album but a cracker
Queen is a great singles band that also made albums. But this one comes closest to greatness. Of course, Bohemian Rhapsody and You’re My Best Friend and Love of My Life. Death on Two Legs and ‘39 are also great. I’m in Love With My Car otoh is truly awful. This one feels heavily influenced by Sgt Pepper in the sense of smashing together a bunch of disparate British music styles, which works and doesn’t at the same time. It’s probably a 3.5 but I’ll round up because the best stuff here is truly excellent
Queeny
Excellent Queen album!!
I don't think Queen is a particularly album oriented band, it seems to me that they did a better job of writing singles. This album is no exception, there isn't one clear theme or tone - but there are some damn good songs. Bohemian Rhapsody alone easily makes this album a 4. I don't think the rest of the album is strong enough to be a 5, but it is very good.
Great stuff. Already in Library - You're My Best Friend, 39, Love of my Life, Bohemian Rhapsody Added to Library - Death on Two Legs
What a fantastic album. This feels very different from everything else Queen did (at least that I listened to). I really enjoyed it. Feels like Queen's Sgt Peppers for some reason to me. I enjoyed the entire outside of "The Prophet's Song". It went on for wayyyyy too long and just wasn't good lol. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is obviously epic. There are some GREAT hits here. "Seaside Rendezvous" was so much fun! Actual rating... 4.5. Liked Songs: Everything except for "The Prophet's Song"
4.25
Wildes Album mit diesen verschiedenen Musikstilen. "The Prophets Song" war entsetzlich scheisse, aber der Rest......wow
The kings (or queens) of theatrical pop. Dramatic, over the top, ambitious, glorious.
Goed album, maar Queen is toch niet helemaal mijn stijl.
There are enough fantastic songs to justify this album's existence and a good rating. Not all of the songs are hits and some are just *mid* enough to justify not giving it 5-stars. With that said, it's still the best Queen album that we've had so far in this list and probably one of the best that we're likely to get from the group.
I'm really enjoying this album so far. I'm kind of surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. I don't think I would go out of my way for it necessarily, but if I was in the mood for some Queen I might reach for this album. Did not realize Bohemian was on this album. This album has some late Beatles vibes - especially Good Company.
I listened to this a lot when it was first released. Haven't heard it much since. Most of it still holds up.
vafan jag gillar ju queen
Wildly diverse: songs range from so bad it's good (I'm In Love With My Car) to so good it's bad (Bohemian Rhapsody). Death On Two Legs is an all-timer as far as album openings go.
Sounds like they recorded in a studio: perfect harmonies, solos, etc. Amazing live performance.
Pink Floyd is Queen Unplugged and Uncut. Incidentally, my father isn’t a fan of either! (He *does* like the Beatles, so conclusively, his mild reprovals have been less influential than Mom's prosecutorial, attack-is-the-best-form-of-defense school of musical appreciation.) I will never not sing along to Bohemian Rhapsody, and You're My Best Friend is a longtime fave. I'm in Love With My Car and ‘39 were first listens and also great. Freddie’s pipes and gusto elevates everything, even the gooier bubble gum bits.
Better than Coldplay
An eclectic mix of songs, most of which I like. I played a game with my friend where I had him try and guess the band. It was “I’m In Love With My Car” and “‘39”. He was pretty mad that I cheated by playing two unrecognizable Queen songs.
An album deserving of its status and importance amongst the Rock canon. Endlessly re-listenable and hard not to enjoy. only really suffers mainly from something akin to the Seinfeld Effect, where the sound has been so over-replicated it's missing its originality upon listening half a century later. fav tracks: Lazing On A Sunny Afternoon, Bohemian Rhapsody
Appreciated listening to this album. Fun song that was new to me: Seaside Rendezvous. Enjoyed the instrumentations, harmonies and lyrics in Love of My Life.
Very good.
Bit disappointed by this one. Just didn't live up the name in my eyes. Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the greatest/iconic songs of all time but there are far too many duds for this to be a "great" album. 3.5/5. Raising to a 4.
I wonder how many people coming into this project are listening to a full Queen album for the first time as opposed to the only the hits. A small part of me was expecting to find this album a little overrated, mostly due to some fatigue with Queen being played to death in most places. However, a lot of the deep cuts really showed up here, from The Prophet’s Song to ‘39 to Love of My Life. And yeah, there’s also Bohemian Rhapsody and You’re My Best Friend. There were a few weird songs (Seaside Rendezvous especially) that prevent me from saying this is perfect. But, for what it’s worth, I had a lot of fun with this one. Favorite track: Bohemian Rhapsody (basic I know, but let me have it) Other hits: You’re My Best Friend, ‘39, The Prophet’s Song, Death on Two Legs, Love of My Life
A towering achievement in rock history, A Night at the Opera is Queen at their most ambitious, theatrical, and sonically adventurous. From the operatic grandeur of “Bohemian Rhapsody” to the raw power of “Death on Two Legs,” the album showcases the band’s virtuosity and flair for drama. The production is lush, the songwriting bold, and Freddie Mercury’s vocals are nothing short of iconic. However, the album’s occasional detours into jazzy pastiche—like “Seaside Rendezvous” and “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon”—while charming to some, for me they dilute the emotional and musical intensity for those who prefer Queen’s rockier edge. They feel more like whimsical sketches than essential statements. Still, it’s a near-masterpiece—just shy of five stars due to those indulgences.
A genre-blending orchestral album. Obviously highlighted by Bohemian Rhapsody, but some other really good tracks as well, with the typical Queen weirdness mixed in. Freddie Mercury is clearly in peak form, with group harmonies also showcased on many songs.
This has a few odd songs, but overall a great album. Amazing that Bohemian Rhapsody made it to radio! That was an accomplishment.
Death on Two Legs, Love of my Life: Good new to me songs. You're My Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody: Great not new to me songs. I'm in Love With my Car, The Prophet's Song: Absolute shit songs. Freddie is the best voice in R&R ever, yes. But Queen still belongs on a Greatest Hits album.
Loved it! Queen at their best? Bangers throughout, maybe 1 skip, maybe 0? Will revisit for sure.
Just a 4 by the skin of its teeth as a result of the strength of the obvious songs. There’s a lot of gimmicky shite on here though
Death On Two Legs starts the album strong and it ends quite bombastic with the Bohemian Rhapsody/God Save The Queen combo ending. But why did they put I'm In Love With My Car in here and furthermore was selected as the B-side of the Bohemian Rhapsody single? Fuck knows, Queen albums always have one or two tracks that make it lose the 5 star potential. Their best albums are their first 2 Greatest Hits compilations.
8/10 peam theater kid rock
A little eccentric and showcases wide range. Some truly great songs (Best Friend, bohemian rhapsody) and a few that were more skippable. ‘39 was my pleasant surprise track
Good old friend
Classic, so many great hits.
Fantastic album with some stone cold classics
So good. Loved ‘39 and Seaside Rendezvous
Best Song: Bohemian Rhapsody I am not a huge Queen fan but do appreciate and enjoy them (I had both Classic Queen and Greatest Hits in high school). However, this album is a first from start to finish. It is good, a bit more theatrical than I normally enjoy but their talent is impossible to miss. Plus, Bohemian Rhapsody will always be awesome! I'm sure that there will be more Queen that leans more towards rock and my liking. 4/5.
I love Queen, but I do find their albums messy.
Queen is probably the best rock band of all time but its not talked about enough how many showtunes their albums have. I love showtunes so its great, just not mentioned ever.
!!!
Come for the Bohemian Rhapsody, stay for Brian May singing like a quarter of the songs? BR being on this album puts the floor at a high 3/5. There’s definitely some filler, but there’s also some really solid deep cuts on here, too. “I’m in Love with My Car”, “Sweet Lady”, and “Love of my Life” are all good. Queen was sneaky good at creating beautiful harmonies, but a few too many jaunty, circusy tunes keep this at a 4/5 for me.
This album is epic in a way one could only imagine if you're only familiar with the hits, like I was. Not a moment goes by that I wasn't fully engulfed in the music. Pairs excellent with working on your car or arts and crafts.
"Bohemian rhapsody" +3, lots of filler but several phenomenal songs
Fun circus-like sounds. A handful of very enjoyable tracks other than Bohemian Rhapsody.
When I was a wee-lad, before the Bohemian Rhapsody biopic might I add, I got really into Queen and started rolling the snowball that would lead me to where I am with discovering music in such deep and niche levels. I thought today would be a good day to return back to my roots with listening to what may just be Queen's most iconic project out of a discography of iconic releases. Personally I have always favored The Works, but haven't listened in full in a decent amount of time so that could have easily changed. A Night At The Opera is equally as much Rock as it is also very operatic, this album feels full of emotions and these grand swings that showcase each member's respective skills to their fullest. Brian May makes the guitar parts feel both enjoyable and thoughtful with his masterful guitar playing. John Deacon plays a more unsung role of being a backbone to all the song compositions and providing the final "oomph" the project needs to be seem as huge. Freddie Mercury does what he does best and gives one hell of a vocal performance full of theatrics and swagger unseen by any other artists of his time and beyond. Finally we have Roger Taylor who provides the pace and even some writing credits to help put the final pieces in place to help make this album and Queen as much of a spectacle as they truly are. While not every song on this album is perfect, I do still think the highs make up for some of the more clunky tracks like Good Company and Seaside Rendezvous. Overall I am really satisfied with how Queen has held up through my music listening journey and I hope to adventure through them more later on, but for now I have to say this is solid.
classic
I loved getting to see Queen's "rocky" side. I didn't grow up listening to classics like Bohemian Rhapsody and had very little exposure to essential artists like Queen. This album showed me why they were so renowned. Their theeatrics and dramatic approach to song writing is what I love about them. Many of the songs feel like a true moment, something you want to listen closely to. The opener did a great job of setting the scene. The journey of a "rocky", displayed in "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon", to a more delicate sound, like in "'39", was really interesting to me. Many elements stayed consistent, but it made the album more engaging to have different levels of energy.
Is This The Real Life? 1001 Albums Generator 93 (08/11/2025) I think the reason why Queen got so popular was that they could appeal to both the rock/metal heads as well as theater kids. Their music always walked the line between the extremely theatric music hall and the truly hard rock. At the center of this juxtaposition was the legendary vocalist Freddie Mercury, who had quite a knack for the dramatic, and guitarist Brian May, who is one of my personal favorite guitarists ever and has a tone that is quintessential rock. Queen's fourth studio album, A Night At The Opera, is their best Queen because it has the best mix of these two aspects of the band. Obviously, the key track here is Bohemian Rhapsody. I almost don't even want to talk about it because like, it's Bohemian Rhapsody. What am I supposed to say? All 5 parts of this through-composed song are legendary in their own right and every member of the band is at the top of their game here. What I do want to talk about however, is the unfairly maligned little brother of this legendary song, The Prophet's Song. It is also through-composed, progressive, epic, and it has some wonderful vocal acrobatics courtesy of Freddie Mercury. The a capella canon is wonderful and gets me every time. I have always loved this song and felt that it deserved just as much praise as BoRhap. Some of the more straightforward songs here are also amazing. You're My Best Friend is another hit that is so goshdarn cute. Love Of My Life is also really sweet. I actually like Roger Taylor's contribution, I'm In Love With My Car, even though people apparently don't like this one. Death On Two Legs is a legendary opener that is kind of experimental in its production choices and also has some of the heaviest guitar on the whole thing. Speaking of heavy guitar riffs, Sweet Lady blew my socks off. I had totally forgotten this deep cut, but it is really good. Vocally, it isn't Freddie's best moment, but it may very well be Brian May's finest moment outside of The Prophet's Song. If anything holds this album back, it's the fact that members other than Freddie were allowed to take lead vocals. '39 is a stompin, hollerin romp that I can't take seriously and Good Company is one of those highly theatrical songs that is kind of nothing. In general, these very theatrical songs are hit or miss. I actually love Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, and Seaside Rendezvous is sweet. I could do without God Save The Queen but like I get it. A Night At The Opera is the first Queen album I would recommend to people trying to get into it. A combination of very recognizable songs with great deep cuts make it their most consistent album. 4.5/5, rounded down to 4. Favs: You're My Best Friend The Prophet's Song Bohemian Rhapsody Least Fav: Good Company
No private session used for Spotify. I like this album, it's got some overplayed hits but it has some good Queen songs that weren't played to death on the radio and didn't make it on The Greatest Hits album. Interesting to hear the songs that were written by some of the other members of Queen as well.
This was a lot better than Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. I really enjoyed the song about his car. Ask me about my car dream I had once.
some just weird queen songs but also some iconic ones. bohemian rhapsody automattically ups this
A classic for a reason. Really enjoyed it
I *really* enjoyed this: i T felt like an album I *should* have listened to by now, and it didn’t disappoint. From the first track (one of the best diss tracks I’ve heard), I was hooked - and although I didn’t need a song about being in love with a car, pretty much every song slapped. Despite the hate-filled start, this is an album about love. It’s got two of the sweetest love songs in the world, one about friendship, but written for a lifelong romantic partner, the other apparently romantic, but written for a lifelong friend. And then at the end, in context, Bohemian Rhapsody closes the album like… well, a night at the opera. Astonishingly good.
This album truly begs the question: Can a single indisputably outstanding song lift an otherwise mediocre collection of songs into the realm of greatness? The other songs on this album are certainly serviceable. While taking part in this project, I've listened to dozens of albums (possibly over 100 of the 350 I've rated so far, actually) filled with songs just as competent but forgettable (and occasionally embarrassingly cringe-worthy) as most of the songs on this album. What those other albums lack, of course, is their very own "Bohemian Rhapsody." If two or three other songs here were even one-quarter as good as that song (almost certainly a consensus top 5 of all time, so a big order, admittedly) this is a slam dunk 5 instead of a 4 rating. Or, looked at another way, this would have been Led Zeppelin IV instead of what it actually is. One more note. A couple of weeks ago, I got Queen II, and commented on how it reflected a very talented but ultimately immature group, with somewhat embarrassing tracks about evil trolls versus white queens and other such clearly Tolkien-inspired lyrics not uncommon for the era. The band had largely (but not completely) moved away from that by this point (two albums later), but "The Prophet's Song" is clearly still revisiting that phase of their development. On this listening, though, I came to realize that "Bohemian Rhapsody" is also a song like that. Or a parody of a song like that which somehow spirals into a greatness that a more straight-laced approach could never have achieved.
This album feels like a perfect blend of the hard rock, prog, and glam bits of Queen all blended into one quirked up smoothie, so why is it one of my least favorite I've listened to from the group? Don't get me wrong, this album is good, Bohemian Rhapsody alone would assure that, so all the other stuff here just feels like a neat bonus; I'm especially a fan of the shorter, goofier tracks. However, that's exactly the problem, even the other hits here just don't feel all too special. You're My Best Friend just feels like it is made for commercials, and Love of My Life has a solid base, but I wish it did more with said base. It's a pleasant experience, and worth your time if you like the sillier side of rock, but it feels like they made some momentous shit, and filled out the rest of the of album quickly in order to get that/those songs out as soon as possible. I think a combination of this and its sister album, A Day at the Races, would make one of the best rock albums of all time, but for now I just feel like this is a tad half-baked. In the way where a half-baked cookie still tastes good, but it's missing something.
Well, they certainly did push the boundaries! I don't think I've ever listened to this whole album before. While it does have their biggest hit, it also has some really big flops. Back in the day, when you bought an album, you put it on and listened to the whole thing - all the way through. It gave you a better perspective of what the band was thinking. If I bought this - I don't think I would have made it to Bohemian Rhapsody. 3 or 4 great songs and a lot that are not so great. Give it 4 stars just for Bohemian Rhapsody.
I like this album. I think I enjoyed it a bit above just a like album so I'm going to give it 4 stars.
One of the best, few mid songs but nothing beats Bohemian Rhapsody
Kudos for Queen creating a rock opera that isn’t 4 hours long and overly self indulgent. It’s probs the shortest rock opera since Houmous & Chutneys controversial, satirically charged 15 second long album ‘Gateau Opera le Rock’ 4.0 9/12 Love of My Life
Killer songs, killer album, killer Queen!
So many classics and, of course, one of the best Pop Songs ever written. Fav: Bohemian Rhapsody
4 out of 5. Credit where it's due, and besides the overplayed Bohemian Rhapsody, this was a good time.
Just so far ahead of it's time in songwriting and musical production...def a few skips on it, but so many deep classics. You're My Best Friend and Bohemian Rhapsody get it 4 stars alone.
Had never listened to this as an album, only songs. Strong tunes and production.
This album is big and dramatic and Queen effin rules
It's really good at its best but prophets song and I'm in love with my car are too bad to ignore. Can't be a 5
Incredibly accurate title. Didn't feel like an album. It felt like a whole production
Några starka, några inte lika starka. 4:a
I mean, what can I say that hasn't been said? Seaside Rendezvous had some great alternative instrumentations. The Prophets Song had some great rounds and a really nice string closing leading into Love of my Life so well. Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon is just such a vibe. And of course, there's Bohemian Rhapsody. Quite close to a 5, but not everything hit so it's like a 4.5. would listen again (even to I'm in Love with my Car lol).
Really enjoy this one. Queen brings their theatrical style to the classic rock sensibilities of the time, and they make it work.
incredibly self-indulgant i love it 8.2/10
1001 Albums (Once A Day) - (1/1001) Rating 1 album a day from this random book called 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die by Robert Dimery where a bunch of so called music connoisseurs decide the essential records that everyone must hear Ohhh you think you're SOO smart you think YOU know EVERYTHING about music Huh??? OK pal we'll see come on lets see. Honestly? Not as inconsistent as people make it out to be. There are three songs on here that I consider to be amazing songs. Those three tracks are Death on Two Legs, The Prophet's Song, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Death on Two Legs is punchy, energetic, instrumentally engaging, and catchy. Really a top notch intro. Sets the tone well. The harmonies on The Prophet's Song are gorgeous. The song progresses really nicely and I love how the harmony suddenly stops and the instrumental kicks in it tickles my brain nicely. But Bohemian Rhapsody is (of course) their magnum opus track. Absolute banger. Fantastic riffs, such great vocals from Mercury and the build-up is awesome as well. The rest of the album is consistent within their own realm, but never reach quite as high as the top 3 managed to. Maybe I'm just a sucker for these cliche pop rock tracks but honestly they're done really well for the most part. Some of the lyricism is undoubtedly dated like 'I'm in Love with My Car' (seriously man) and on that end the cliche aspect definitely doesn't work for me but honestly as a whole this album flows really nicely and gives me hope for the rest of this challenge. Admittedly I'm not as in tune with this era of music as I'd like to be so maybe this challenge will change that, and maybe I'll get tired of the cliches presented on this album but as of now, I'd say it's pretty high on the awesome scale. ballsmcgee out 😛🤟🤟🤟 Favs: Death on Two Legs, The Prophet's Song, Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen were one of the first bands I loved when I was younger, they were my favorite band for a long time. This was the first Queen album I heard all the way through I considered it a 10 through and through. However, I find myself having this general issue with Queen albums a lot, they have next to no cohesion as one piece, like you could shuffle almost any Queen song from 1975-1977 and throw a mix on an album and you’d get the same effect. That being said, what usually saves a Queen album is the fact that their songs are all generally very strong. This album opens with “Death On Two Legs” a rocking diss track that gets you pumped to start this album. However, the album they falls into a slump for the next two tracks “Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon” is fine but it lasts barely any time and “I’m In Love With My Car” is well… it’s not great. “You’re My Best Friend” takes us out of the slump though with an excellent song with a wonderful vocal performance from Freddie. “‘39” might be my favorite song on the record it’s folky sound is really pleasant and the lyrics are great. “Sweet Lady” is ok but I’m not that into it. “Seaside Rendezvous” is actually great, it kinda reminds me of songs like “You Gave Me The Answer” and “Honey Pie” by Paul McCartney and I really enjoy those songs and this one. “The Prophet’s Song” is one of the greatest epics Queen wrote the extended vocal break is super cool and the hard rock portions are excellent. “Love Of My Life” is a classically tinged and excellently performed love song. “Good Company” is ok I guess. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is great it truly is but like many Queen hits it has kinda lost its power for me and especially over the last several years since the film came out I’ve heard it soooo many times. This album is good, I have my issues with it but in spite of its issues its a good record and a fun album
Great representation of everything Queen can be. The first half suite is perfect. The rest is great.
man, Queen continues to blow me away with their full records. Brian May absolutely crushes on this album, and its just so fun to listen to. I think the only song I thought was meh was, The Prophet's Song, but otherwise this album rocked. not to mention that it is peppered with all time hits, having 'You're my Best Friend' and the eternally classic 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
3 iconic songs: you’re my best friend, love of my life, and bohemian. I was kinda surprised that the rest of the album did fall a little flat. Some of the other songs just seem so half baked. I do absolutely love the piano part on love of my life. Now the bohemian rhapsody bit. This song might be one of the greatest compositions of all time. It does one of the greatest things you can do in music which is blend so many different cultures and styles into a completely new entity. The layered voices acapella section, which honestly I really don’t know enough music history to even know what inspired this because there’s really nothing else quite like it but maybe some kind of barbershop vibe with its razor sharp harmonies. The British power ballad section. The operatic section circa Italian/german/austrian influences. The American influenced hard rock section. And then finally a classically themed coda with a simple one handed piano outro that could’ve been written by Bach or Beethoven. I don’t think a song will ever pierce pop culture quite like this song has ever again. Wish I could give it a five just for bohemian but I think as an album it’s a 4.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" has such a pop culture impact that it's hard to even describe. This album could be 37 minutes of silence and then 6 minutes of Rhapsody and it would still get a positive rating. The rest of the album is classic queen sound. You're not going to be disappointed if that's what your into. Shout out to "You're My Best Friend" as well. I think this is a 9/10 for me.
I mean… it’s Queen. Listening to this album front to back made me realize how versatile their sound could be — from hard rock and ballads to vaudeville. I had a fun time discovering some new tracks on this album, with ‘39 being the standout. Favorite tracks: - You’re My Best Friend - ‘39 - Love of My Life - Bohemian Rhapsody
What a fucking album, highs and lows, all in all a good album
Queen cast their musical net further and wider than ever before, pulling off an ambitious vision where expertly layered production allows the complex songs to add even more bombast to the brawn of their previous (and best) albums. I prefer II and Sheer Heart Attack, but this is still a step above anything they made afterwards. A little too cabaret for me compared to the previous two! Favourite tracks: Death on Two Legs, '39, The Prophet's Song (epic), Bo Rhap
a classic
So good. Really high quality. I think I will enjoy relistening regularly. Much more beatles sound and influence than I've noticed before in queen. Paul McCartney style I guess. Some quite progy bits too though. You can hear how they influenced muse. (and the darkness.) Love of my life is really excellent. Borap too of course. Layered guitars and the guitar technique are really impressive in parts.
Listen to this with Good Company.
I was ready to give this a 5 star easy and then I got to the prophet song, and that got too wonky for me. 4.5 from me! extra brownie points after I learned that some of this was recorded in a barn
Hey it's Queen! Pretty fun vibes all around. Fun listening to them play around on their non-hit songs.
It's crazy to me that, despite having maybe the greatest collection of singles and hits of ANY rock band, and having the type of sound where any live cover of any of their songs likely result in thunderous applause, they were just inept at putting together a truly compelling album. There is some treasure here, but songs like Good Company ruin what could easily be a 5 with their level of talent.
Enjoyable overall, with some all-timer songs to elevate it.
Even before Freddie starts singing, the guitar is so Queen in sound, it's awesome. INSANE production quality. The songs are full of theater kid energy that would normally put me off, and yet.... If there's one complaint I have, it's that it's really not structured like an album, more just a collection of songs. Thus, as incredible as Bohemian Rhapsody is, it comes out of nowhere in the context of the album. At least it has a cute outro in God Save The Queen. Standouts: Death On Two Legs • I'm In Love With My Car • You're My Best Friend • Seaside Rendezvous • Bohemian Rhapsody
This album is so fun to listen to. It's really like attending an opera. It has it's highs and lows and everything in between. So many bands attempted to do this after Queen, but nothing compares to the original. The only real reason why I can't give it a 5 stars is that there are a few skippable songs on this album, and I usually only hold out for 5 stars for the albums that I think are perfect pretty much from beginning to end without any skippable songs. Skippable songs: Seaside Rendezvous The Prophet's Song (way too long and boring) God Save The Queen 4/5
Another pretty good album. Certainly not my favorite band of all time, but I do enjoy some Queen. That said, the hits sorta carry this one hard.
I wish I loved my car.
Best so far.
Drama i dusjen
The transition from the "I Love my Car" song to the "You're my Best Friend" song is hilarious
Overall great album with some spectacular moments
A great album and a joy to listen to.
