Overrated and overblown although liked Best friend
curto afu há tempo ja
Topalbum, de beste van Queen!
Not a masterpiece but a collection of wonderful singles
It's hard not to be charmed by this album. It's fun and well performed by everyone involved. It's just a classic. Duh. 3 5's in a row? Wow.
Such great stuff on this, even besides "Bohemian Rhapsody," which everyone knows. I mean "You're My Best Friend," " '39," "I'm In Love With My Car" are all great as well. But you can't get around the elephant in the room, can you? It's just too big. I tend to listen to the B-sides / deep cuts of Queen more only because I have heard those greatest hits so often. And BR is one I think I have heard hundreds of time now. It's still a great song, though. The band is firing on all cylinders on just about every song. Not one I would skip at all.
I did not immediately like this album as much as I like their first three; I'm a sucker for harder rock. Don't get me wrong, Death on Two Legs and I'm In Love With My Car are great hard rocking songs, the former a brilliant opener. It was the middle of the album where I was a bit uncertain. But I found when I was already in an amped up mood, this album took it to the next level. And it's far too complex to appreciate in one or two listens. After a few listens, I loved it, especially the more jazzy songs. What was particularly impressive was when I learned that a lot of the cool jazz sounds I learned to like were created through Mercury's and Taylor's vocals (Seaside Rendezvous) or regular instruments (Good Company). May's and Deacon's instrument innovations throughout the album are impressive. You're My Best Friend and Love of My Life are two very different but equally lovely odes. '39 was probably the place where I first started to wonder about the album (maybe May's just ok vocals?), but after a closer listen it's a pretty cool ballad - a cross between Led Zeppelin and John Denver. And I love how Sweet Lady cleanses the palette after. I don't always want to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody I've heard it so many times, but it is a rock opera masterpiece. Still, I think I might like The Prophet's Song just as much for its sweeping, grandiose style; it might be my new favorite on the album. In the end, I think I'm at a 4.5 but I'm rounding up for all the intricacy they put into the album and because they're freakin' legends (and deservedly so).
p351. 1975. 5 stars Yes, it's overblown and over produced camp rock - but it's also an A grade rock band on top form with some cracking tunes and a sense of humour, and that covers a multitude of sins. There is a reason why Queen were so popular and why their songs are still played today, and this is the perfect illustration why. There isn't a weak track on it, although you can argue that The Prophet's Song outstays its welcome. And Brian May seems quite a good guitarist.
Huh, I just had Sheer Heart Attack day before yesterday. That's OK! You can't have too much Queen. A Night At The Opera is not a chore. ...yep...still great. Be my clementine!
Brilliantly original, quirky and inventive. I love how they are doing their own weird ass thing. It remind me a couple of times of McCartney with the very silly and British “show tunes”. But then mix in the epic, soaring opera and blistering hard rock guitar solos. With 2 classic singles and album tracks full of interest, has to be 5 stars.
I needed this. Too many mediocre albums have passed by. I bought this as a kid and played it to death and even 47-odd years later people are still listening to it in droves. So varied- even the 'dodgy' tracks are great (Lazing on a Sunday. I'm in love with my car) and all have a story attached to them. Vocals (and not just Freddies), guitar, bass and drums all top of the game and the production is beyond perfection. Even the one-star reviews admit how mega it all is and base the score on just not being into it's excess. 'Death on two Legs' is my favourite Queen song by the way....If I could give this 1000 stars I would.
Listened to on 4/7/22 5/5 Favorite song: Bohemian Rhapsody, God Save the Queen Simply. Iconic.
A truly eclectic album with so many different instruments and styles. A number of classics with Bohemian Rhapsody (potentially the greatest song of all time) along with You’re My Best Friend and Love of My Life. A very solid 5.
class
A very easy 5 stars. It's crazy how such a massively versatile album can be so consistently excellent. Apart from the somewhat annoying middle-part of The Prophet's Song (not quite the lightning in a bottle that is Bohemian Rhapsody) and the sub-par Good Company, every single track is worthy of the 5 star album score. '39 in particular is a longtime Queen favorite of mine.
FINALLY!
Epic
The number of strong songs on this album is staggering: Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of My Life, '39, You'Re My Best Friend, God Save the Queen. The rest are at least very good. Among the early Queen records, this is easily the most important one. Truly iconic. 5/5
This album is one of my all-time favorites. Listening to it today was fantastic, because it’s a repeat of something I do often. Freddie’s master class on live looping in The Prophet Song is worth the price of admission on its own, but starting with Death on Two Legs? Sheer perfection.
it feels like I’ve heard a hundred different Queen songs but the only ones I knew from this was You’re My Best Friend and of course that which must not be named so it was a pretty pleasant surprise hearing more proggy songs like Death On Two Legs and The Prophet’s Song as well as more Tally Hall vibe songs like Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon or Seaside Rendezvous, though I guess that one’s more Elton John also ‘39 was a whole-ass surprise, who knew Queen made a motherfucking folk song it’s reported that at the time this was the most expensive album ever produced and it sure does sound like it, fucking phenomenal - 10/10
When I was about 13, my mate Peter played me the Prophet's Song on his walkman during a school excursion to the Sydney Opera House (we were there for an afternoon at the opera. Matinee performance of Manon Lescaut.) I didn't think much of the opera, but I loved Queen. He subsequently made me a cassette of Night at the Opera backed with Queen's Greatest Hits. I had been familiar with Bohemian Rhapsody and many of their singles prior to that, but Night at the Opera was the first Queen studio album that I really delved into and played obsessively. I find it hard to approach this record objectively, because of my nostalgic love of the record. Does it have a lot of songs that delve into pastiche and novelty? Yes. Is it almost bombastically over-produced? Well, yes. Is it full of cracking tunes and rocking rock? well, hell yeah! Let's play it again, and louder!
One of the greatest albums I've ever listened to. I love this one through and through. From Death on Two Legs, '39, Sweet Lady, and all the rest. This is Queen at their best.
5/5 what.an.album.
5, really enjoyed this
All around a great album. All good songs, including the monster hit Bohemian Rhapsody. Quite the variety of songs. Easy 5
Legendary album.
2/17/2022 Today's Album: "A Night At The Opera" by Queen - This is an album that I have had on vinyl since around the beginning of the initial 2020 quarantine and in the time it really has not gotten old to me. The reason? This album is one of the best produced albums of the decade. In my opinion, this is a textbook example of how to mix and pan audio to transform it from a basic performance to something that feels beyond instrumentation. The Bohemian Rhapsody movie that came out a few years ago did a great way of showing how much Freddy Mercury wanted to create an LP at the caliber of a theatrical performance and with a good pair of headphones, it absolutely sounds like it. The way Death On Two Legs begins with a gigantic instrumental build before it cuts out to pretty much nothing is absolutely stunning. Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon is a really fun ragtime tune about exactly what the title would imply. I'm In Love With My Car, despite its absurd title, has a ton of really creative sounds in the mix and they are all mixed exceptionally well as well. The song '39 is one that I had on repeat after listening to it because of how enchanting it is. You're put into this bittersweet song about war and forgotten love that tugs on the heart string despite the lyrics being quite vague. It has this deep emotional weight to it and is the best track on the album in my eyes, with two acoustic guitars and the bass playing off each other in a way that gives this song great levity despite the lyrics. Seaside Rendezvous is a really fun piano-focused track that has a really bouncy 20's feel to it, similarly to many other songs on this album. It is a great way to end side 1 of the vinyl with Freddy saying, "Give us a kiss" before one last musical hit. Prophet's Song, being the longest track on the album, is an incredibly dark and menacing track with great chorus vocals and bass work before the track breaks out into a several minute experimental looping and prog rock section. I think it's really well done and despite how long it goes on for, it totally works with the flow of the record. Love Of My Life is, in my opinion, one of the best love songs to ever exist. It's up there with The Beatle's Something and everyone should know this song. It's heartbreaking, but lovely and incredibly well performed by Mercury. Also the harmonies are literally perfect. Like I haven't emphasized it very much yet, but this guy's vocals are NUTSO. Good company is an all around solid track, Classic queen with great guitar work, fast basslines, and a ton of extraneous orchestral instruments. The stringed instrument, which I think is a ukulele(?) is a really nice part of the track and gives it a lot of personality. Bohemian Rhapsody needs no review. It is fucking Bohemian Rhapsody (It sounds funny at 45 speed on the record player lol). God Save the Queen closes off the album and is just the British national anthem. Epic. Overall, this album is really enjoyable from start to finish and more people should hear it because it's some of queen's best work, despite some of it being really overplayed (Really just Bohemian) Score: 9.5/10 "Bloody Brilliant" Highlights: Death On Two Legs, Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, '39, Seaside Rendezvous, The Prophet's Song, Love Of My Life, Good Company
Easy 5 stars. Masterpiece of an album.
iconic album, not 1 bad song
An absolute classic.
nunca fui fãn de queen esse album abriu minha mente
Classic rock is classic. Bohemian Rhapsody is god-level.
I personally think that Queen is kinda overrated, even though I am not gonna lie, it's a beautiful piece of an album, Bohemian Rhapsody is a classic, undoubtedly. The rest of the album isn't just a background of one hit, I really enjoyed it and it has an unique, special vibe
Good album. Really enjoy transitions here.
This is an extraordinary album. It was revolutionary when it came out, and you can still feel that almost 50 years later. I don't know any other group that can successfully interweave such a mix of musical ranges.
Very enjoyable! Has "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "You're My Best Friend"
One of the good ones
This was my first favorite album at the age of 8 or 9. I have probably listened to these tracks more than any other tracks, or at least for the most years. It's hard to analyze these songs objectively. I like how silly a lot of them are. The Skiffle Band influence is on full display here. This is Queen in transition. They are not quite yet the powerhouse arena rock band they became, but they are also growing out of their art school glam rock phase (I mean, they were always glam, let's be honest). Bohemian Rhapsody is so overplayed on the radio that it takes a conscious effort to listen with fresh ears and appreciate its brilliance. That being said, I think Prophet's Song does what BR is also doing, but better. I'm in Love With My Car is the worst song Queen ever wrote, and I'm happy they got it out of the way this early in their discography.
Een album dat blijft verrassen
A Night at the Opera is the fourth studio album by the British rock band Queen, released in 1975. It was the most expensive album ever recorded at the time of its release. It has been hailed as Queen's best album, and one of the greatest albums in music history. Favourite sobgs: "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon", "You're My Best Friend", and of course "Bohemian Rhapsody". Wanted to rate it 4 because overall this record still is not for everyone. But sorry I can't. It's 5/5 without any doubt.
I have said it before and I may say it again...I love Queen! This is an excellent album! There is so much of musical interest to my ears. The variety of musical styles and instrumentation is lovely.
What a glorious piece of work this is. An incredible example of what's possible in rock music. A grand display of hutzpah and talent. I love it very much.
This is an album I know well, as it was in my sister's record collection in my youth and I played it often. But I don't think I've listened to it since she moved out when I was in junior high. So this is an exciting opportunity. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA is nothing short of amazing. "Death on Two Legs" pairs soaring Queen vocals and heavy metal guitars to rip into whoever it was dedicated to. You know you are in for something good. Who else but Queen would then dive right into the tinny vocaled 1920's-ish "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" then with a little guitar solo jump headlong into the hard rock "I'm In Love With My Car" - a wonderful love song to a car. This is really thrilling stuff! I've always loved "You're My Best Friend." That song still makes me incredibly happy as I think of my best friends every time I hear it. I love the electric piano and vocals. Such a wonderful song. "'39" is a total change of pace and I love it. The acoustic guitar driven song is a great listen evoking its sci-fi backstory with great use of vocals and the electric guitar. I don't think I've heard this song in 40 years but as soon as it started I remembered instantly how much I love it. "Sweet Lady" is a straight Queen rocker with some unusual tempo changes that make it quite interesting to listen to. "Seaside Rendezvous" is a 20's sounding piano driven track. I love sailing along over Freddie Mercury's smooth vocalizations imagining the stage show as I sip a Bee's Knees in some illegal club. "The Prophet's Song" is a dire warning accompanied by the heavy guitars and dark vocals as a prophet warns of the flood made famous by Noah's ark. I love the a cappella vocal solo in the middle that give way to a guitar solo. "Love of My Life" is a heart wrenching love song supported mostly by a gorgeous piano arrangement. Beautiful. "Good Company" adds a dixieland style with a ukulele-driven number again providing testament to Queen's incredibly versatility. Remarkable too is that this song precedes the utterly remarkable... "Bohemian Rhapsody" - what can one say about this song? No one would ever have imagined such a song could ever be exist - let alone become a huge hit, becoming one of the most beloved and enduring songs in rock and roll - and probably in all of music history. Listening to it in the context of this album was wonderful. There were a few moments when I could briefly feel what it was like to listen to this for the first time as an eight-year-old kid and being utterly mesmerized. "God Save The Queen" closes A NIGHT AT THE OPERA in a truly epic way. I have chills. I cannot imagine any other group with the audacity and talent to create anything like this album. The songs all come together beautifully to create a transcendent listening experience. While the singles are spectacular on their own, there is nothing like listening to this album as a whole. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA is a masterpiece.
la plus grosse masterclass de ce monde
God, I love this album. It's the flaming cherries jubilee of rock albums. It's decadent and absolutely too much, but incredibly beautiful. I mean, have you ever spent a night at the opera? I have and it really isn’t like this at all, but at the same time, they kind of nail it here. It’s big and luxurious and theatrical and you might just shed a tear before it’s all over. This is probably Queen's most perfectly realized album. It's one of the only ones I can listen to without skipping a track. The production is superb and the band are in the best form of their lives. The layered vocals are stunning, the arrangements absolutely gorgeous. It has all the pomp and majesty and R-O-C-K you want in a Queen album, with plenty of surprises. The way the band breezily sways from twee, old timey confections like "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" or "Seaside Rendezvous" to muscular, complex songs like "Prophet's Song" and "Death on Two Legs" is a sonic joy, something no other band could hope to pull off without sounding ridiculous. Only Queen could put out an absurdity of a song called “I’m in Love with My Car” and not be met with endless derision. Queen gives us permission to let go and indulge as listeners like no one else. They were at heart a killer power trio plus one, the One being Freddie Mercury, rock’s greatest front man, with an operatic vocal range and a flair for the dramatic. It’s the interplay/tension between that huge rock sound and the band’s more elegant, progressive inclinations that creates a singular kind of magic. Throw in a little winking, campy humor and you have a style of music that delivers on every level. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is of course the star of the whole production. Queen does more musically with this song than most bands could hope to do with an entire album. The pathos, the grandeur, the bombast, the humor, the strutting rock assault. Yes, this song gets played a lot, but there's a reason why. There's nothing else in the world like it. Fave Songs (All songs, in order from most to least favorite): Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend, Death on Two Legs, Love of My Life, Seaside Rendezvous, The Prophet's Song, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, '39, Sweet Lady, Good Company, God Save the Queen, I'm In Love With My Car
A classic, Bohemian Rhapsody was a song I didnt like as a teenager, but love now, a personal example of musical growth
This album gets 4/5 just got Bohemian Rhapsody alone. The rest of the record easily takes it over the top.
Concepção grandiosa e fundamental
Freddie just knows how to do it to you
It's so good. So much variety and incredible performances vocally and musically. I was also surprised how many of these songs I didn't even know I knew. There was only one or two I hadn't heard before. What a great album! Favourite Tracks: (Besides the classics) Death On Two Legs, I'm In Love With My Car, Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon, Seaside Rendezvous
I hadn't listened to this album as a whole before and it was great. Lots of songs I knew and some I didn't. Dynamic, and beautiful. Favourite songs: You're My Best Friend, Seaside Rendezvous, Bohemian Rhapsody
It starts so heavy and powerful, then gets a little dorky. You're my best friend is such a feel good moment. There's a switch to a more folksy sound with '39 before heading back to classic rock. Seaside Rendezvous is full ridiculous campy cabaret I would have loved to see live in a small theatre. Prophet's Song is a little too rock opera and inconsistent for me. I couldn't figure out if Good Company featured a banjo or ukelele and learned of the combo instrument for the first time. How quirky and fun. Bohemian Rhapsody, what a masterpiece. Not possible to listen without joining in. Didn't really need the patriotic closer, but wow what a tight set of tracks showcasing real DYNAMIC range.
Genre bending, sing a long operatic rock. I can see the influence on bands like Mr Bungle
This album is the favorite of a person that played a crucial role in my past. Listening to these songs after all these years unpacks profound memories. Freddie’s voice is sublime. Love of my life, You’re my best friend are songs that will ever live in the collective conscience, let alone Bohemian Rhapsody… It is a fascinating trip, a piece of art.
Campy and ambitious, this album is the pinnacle of 70s rock excess. The vocal arrangements are genius and the meticulous and uncompromising layering of music stands apart. Brian May is one of my favorite guitarists and his Dixieland jazz layered solo in ‘Good Company’ is one of his best with the guitar simulating an entire brass section including a sliding trombone. Of course, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is the climax of this album. That song is iconic on its own, but within the context of the album it becomes even greater. I adore this album
How could I do anything but love this album? Such an iconic set of tracks, a legendary voice gone too soon. A roaring triumph of an album with a bold set of classical influences. I love that Queen manages to be both highbrow and utterly weird. Fave track: Bohemian Rhapsody, duh.
You're My Best Friend, '39, Love of My Life, and Bohemian Rhapsody. This is such a fun and well-recorded album. Possibly the best by one of the all-time greats.
I usually don't review an album song by song, but I found myself doing this here. Death on two legs is a very strong opener, has an epic feel to it and the guitar's sound great. Lazing on a sunday afternoon is kind of a silly "Tiny Tim" kind of song, could go without it but we'll see how it ties into the album. I'm in Love with my Car: Now we're into an 80s Hair Rock song that sounds like it could be The Scorpions or Def Leppard. At this point I'm starting to think this album is going to be very disconnected song to song, but maybe more of a satire/comedy focus? You're My Best Friend: Classic tune, everyone knows it. Very upbeat and poppy. '39: Very strummy, stompy folk song. Reminds me of Country Roads Take Me Home but with a little Queen flair. I dig it. Sweet Lady: Back to the rock, guitar-first tune this time around. Kind of busy, bouncy melody, again very 80s kind of sound but more of a Foghat or Aerosmith vibe this time. Seaside Rendezvous: A ragtime piano tune, with some horns and slide whistles thrown in, file this one under weird Queen, vocals are great as usual but it's a bit out there. The Prophet's Song: Oh wow this is 8 minutes long. This one has a bit of an operatic quality to it, and a bit Metal telling an epic story, this is like Tenacious D almost but minus the comedy and more straight laced. Gets into a strange echoing chant in the middle that kind of kills the vibe. Love of my life: A romantic piano ballad, Freddy putting the emotion into this one. Good company: A vocal harmony, almost has a Beatles vibe now. A touch of ragtime again, and some plunky guitar. Bohemian Rhapsody: The quintessential Queen song. Fits perfectly in this album, the song goes in a lot of directions and matches the amount of whiplash you'll feel from song to song. God Save the Queen: It's actually God Save the Queen, but like a Jimi Hendrix style guitar solo version. Overall Thoughts: That was a wild ride, every single song is completely unlike the other. It feels like Queen had a checklist of genres or bands they wanted to pay homage to and they went through that piece by piece. Some really great tunes, some that I personally didn't dig but I recognize they were well done. Quality is there, Queen is an excellent band and belongs on this list, I can see why this was here. Overall liked it but the inconsistency dragged it a bit. Still giving it a 5, the highs are very high.
Top to bottom, great album.
This album has so many good songs. I had honestly never heard ‘39 and it might have become one of my favorite Queen songs out there. While not every song is great, this album as a whole is.
10 Stars.
LOVE THIS ALBUM
Have been listening to this one when i was 14, still do now, 25 years later. Another timeless gem.
This album is actually quite good. Some songs are reminiscent of Ween. Generally outstanding instrumentation and performance. Deserving of headphones.
oh finally i get the option to rate an album after refreshing: which is how i feel about this album.
Magnificent album. Bohemian Rhapsody is still a Top-25 song on Spotify after all this time.
What can you say about an album that makes you wait until the very end to hear Bohemian Rhapsody and yet you don't feel like skipping any of the tracks to get to that masterpiece? This album is great from the very first song. It features a tremendous diversity of songs and a wide range of emotions and tones, but each one flows effortlessly from the one before it. A true classic 5/5
All of the songs on this album are already pretty good, and then Bohemian Rhapsody kicks dick and makes it a masterpiece. Favorite tracks are Death on Two Legs, The Prophet's Song, and Bohemian Rhapsody, obviously.
9/10. All pretty good, but nothing that I really love.
I liked it a lot. 9/10
Fantastic! One of the greatest opening tracks of all time to set the tone for the album. Love the juxtaposition of The Opera with raucous rock n roll. A great bloody time, the whole time.
I'm surprised that I've never actually listened to this one all the way through. There were a couple songs that I'm surprised weren't released as singles. There were one or two that were a lot more ...bluegrass? than I thought would've been there.
Classic. One of the best from an amazingly unique band.
So great
Hard to beat that!
A masterpiece of songwriting, arranging harmonising and playing.
Easiest 5 star album of my life. I'd never heard many of the songs on this album, so it was an awesome listen. The Prophet's Song is really impressive and creative!
Iconic. Some filler in the middle but enough classics to keep it going
There will never be a better singer.
Queen, you've done it again. Consistently good with a good scope of sound.
An eternal classic
Queen rules, such a fun listen.
An excellent album. I listened to this one a lot when I was little, and most are songs I still listen to regularly. Really formative for my music taste today. A respectful 5 stars

first track- killer guitar parts, menacing gritty vocal performance, experimental structure second track- a psychadellic take on a classic British style, quite funny and tongue and cheek third track- hard/ blues rock style reintroduced, much more traditional rock structure, comedic lyrics fourth track- classic queen song, poppy and fun, lighthearted. fantastic songwriting on all tracks so far fith track- folky style with breaks into wierd choral vocals, quite nice but overall most bland track so far sixth track- comes in sounding like led zeppelin, punchy, dirty and aggresive lyrics and vocal performance seventh track- a British summertime inspired piano/vocal ditty, fun and funny eighth track- prog intro using acoustic guitar, whole track builds throughout its runtime, strange acapella vocal lines, very prog inspired ninth track- quite beautiful denounment with just Freddie and his piano, leads on beautifully from the eighth track, almost tear inducing tenth track- airy guitar lines, plodding ukelele, almost like something off of Abbey Road eleventh track- in the running for greatest song of all time, so operatic, amazingly structured with huge tonal shifts that come naturally, iconic moments and performance, a huge number that will be remembered in legend for all time closer- an instrumental of god save the queen, not as dramatic as the former track but still quite a tongue and cheek summary of the albums themes with the consistency in sound
Yaaasssss Queen!!!! I loved this album. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a full on queen album and I’m glad this one was my first. Vocals and instruments are fire and Freddie Mercury is just incredible in everything Top tracks: you’re my best friend, Love of my life, bohemian rhapsody, sweet lady
Absolutely brilliant in every sense.
Classic Queen!
V good.
Finally! An album that I agree should be on this list!
Quite an iconic album. Nice to hear some of the other songs on the album instead of just the hits.
Another Queen album already? Let's GO. This album has some great songs. Of course Bohemian Rhapsody is the most well known, but they're all great.
Still amazing
Great album, Queen was at the top of their game and produced a brilliant album out of it. It’s a little mix of everything and it’s all brilliant
К ней единственная претензия условная разве в том, что митольный фрагмент "So you think you can stone me..."
This is a 5 star album from start to finish. Queen at their finest.
Eclecticismo puro, bordea el heavy, pasa por el pop, se asoma brevemente al folk y es puro rock. Mercury desatado. Cambios de ritmo contínuos. Temazo mítico incluído. Sobresaliente
Faves: Love of my life, Bohemian Rhapsody, seaside revenue
Bohemian Rhapsody tem 1,5 bilhoes de listens
Has BR so...
love love love Queen
Obviously some absolute jams here, but I really liked ‘39, which I’d never heard before, and The Prophet’s Song” was like a Bohemian Rhapsody 2.0 that I didn’t know existed.
Lives up to its name, Bohemian Rhapsody is worth the price of admission alone
Fantastic
Amazing classic. Discovered '39, probably a 10 ten queen song for me now. Prophet song great stereo experience. Album excellence
10
Classics don't crack!!
It fucking kills it. Thats it
No me ha encantado, pero ...
Just great and suuuper original!
Incredible album - Queen always puts me in a good mood. You're my best friend and Bohemian Rhapsody are both iconic. I also feel like I know a lot about this album because it was featured in the movie.
Just love this album with all of its eccentricity.
Bardzo pomieszane gatunki, ale są dobrzy we wszystkim. No i Bohemian Rhapsody <3
Revisitar esta obra que ya conocia es siempre chulo. Más rock del que recordaba.
Great album from start to finish
Hard not to rate this well. Not every song is a gem but those that are make up for it. I’m thankful that Wayne’s World revived the interest in Queen.
5
How can the album that bore Bohemian and Rhapsody not to be a five. Love the 70s shredding.
Enjoyed it - only familiar with the hits, but a varied and very listenable album
No other band can jump from heavy metal to cabaret to prog rock with the effortless grace of Queen, and this album displays that with a beautiful smattering of song variety. One star off for letting “I’m in Love With My Car” onto the album. 4⭐️
Solid album, probably Queen's best. Still a bit too much filler to be great, but very good.
Tää on taas vähän hankala kun on yks niin kova hitti, mutta muuten on vähän niin ja näin. Mennään nyt nelkkukelkulla.

I wrote a long review for this and it didn’t save. Shame. This album is all over the place in some good and bad ways. Some great songs, including ones I hadn’t heard before so that’s nice. 3.8/5
I have been a vocal hater of Queen for years. I find their hits annoying, and their theatrical approach always rang so hollow to me. I was dreading this album, expecting 45 minutes of "Bohemian Rhapsody"... Boy, what a pleasant surprise! This blew me away, mostly from a compositional standpoint. There's a lot similarities with prog rock here, more than anything else, and Brian May's guitar solos are actually far more emotional than schlocky. Freddie Mercury is obviously the standout, and I was very impressed by his range and dynamic vocal shifts. Obviously he's famous for his theatricality and powerhouse talent, but I feel like I finally saw a different side of his charisma with this record. Overall, it'll take a few re-listens before I'm comfortable calling this a favorite, but it absolutely impressed me. Fav Tracks: Death On Two Legs, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, '39, Good Company Least Fav: I'm In Love With My Car Score: 7.5
First time listening to a full Queen album (after previously only knowing the hits). I enjoyed the experience. What I was struck by was the diversity in the songs. It wasn't all driving, epic arena rock and that was cool. It showed me just how versatile the band was (is?). Similar to my Bob Marley experience through this list. It was a pleasure to get to know Queen through the songs that didn't make it as big. 4/5
Highest levels of brilliance in parts, and just incredibly average in others. Could have been one of the greatest albums ever, but for a couple of duds.
My second Queen album- didn't enjoy this one quite as much as Queen II. Lots of good songs, including Bohemian Rhapsody which stands up as a great. Great use of vocal harmony throughout the album. My main umbrage is that a lot of the songs sound hokey / "carnival"esque. Overall- still an enjoyable album with a lot of talent.
Bought this when it came out and loved it and played it constantly. After punk and new wave came along I ditched this to the back of the pile. I’ve since gone back and the work and musicianship is astounding, still. This for me was the highlight album of their career.
Majestic. The highs are incredibly high. Not every track is as memorable as Bohemian Rhapsody or Love of My Life, but the vocals, musicianship and melodies are superb throughout.
What a great album, contains one of the greatest singles of all time, admittedly it does contain 2, maybe 3 of slightly weaker tracks, but still a great album.
half the album is fucking amazing (death on two legs, best friend, '39, prophet's, love of my life, bo rhap) and the other half is straight dogshit, but at least the dogshit is pretty fun
I knew this would be on here. Prime Queen. Prime Freddy. Bohemian. Best Friend. Harmonies for ages.
More carnival than opera. I dig it
v good
There's a couple songs in the middle of this album that kept it from being a 5. Other than that it was perfect. A classic in every sense of the word. 4.5/5
A great album
9/10 Increíble, temones en casi todos los temas
Good mix of great classics
It was good to hear the rest of the album.
Another installment in my "albums I really should've listened to ages ago" series I guess! So, of course I knew some of the hits on here, and Bohemian Rhapsody is a song I've always loved since being a little kid (I believe there is even a (very bad) recording of me singing it with a group I used to be in as a kid), and since then it's a song I've always loved. However, despite studying Killer Queen for one of my music qualifications, I never really bothered to do a full album by the band. So when I saw this, to be honest, I was excited but a little nervous it wouldn't live up to my expectations based on the hits, but actually, only one song in I knew I should've listened to an album ages ago! I honestly didn't expect it to show so many elements of prog rock! Sure, there a lot of less interesting songs that aren't quite as good, but this was a decent match to my expectations and I enjoyed a lot of the album. Overall, whilst this is definitely carried by Bohemian Rhapsody, I think Freddie's voice and personality throughout is exciting enough to keep me hooked, and I also really love the guitar and bass work a lot. I find the bass parts particularly funny as some of the songs it even sounds like more complicated jazz bass parts, and this is the same guy that wrote Another One Bites The Dust. I don't need to explain how legendary and amazing Bohemian Rhapsody is. You can't not sing at least one line, and I'll never stop recreating the Wayne's World scene in the guitar solo. If you don't like the guitar solos on it I genuinely just think you're a lost cause and a miserable music fan, sorry 😔
Lightening in a bottle not made for me.
Whimsical and nostalgic. A joy.
Some absolutely incredible songs - a couple not so good ones
Trading the highest hard rock highs for diversity really doesn't dilute the overall products. There are some duds, but you can't have a masterpiece omelet like Bohemian Rhapsody without cracking a few eggs (fucking dudes and their cars). (4.5)
It’s a sin that I don’t have this record in my collection…
The album with "Bohemian Rhapsody" is certainly going to be an important one, both in terms of Queen's discography and pop music in general. On the one hand, nobody had heard a band do this before; a rock song with several different movements, each one building toward a melodramatic crescendo. It was indeed "a night at the opera," but also a night with a barbed, spiteful sense of humor and thick riffs ("Death on Two Legs," "I'm In Love With My Car"), a night with playful novelty songs ("Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon," "Good Company"), and a night with feelgood power odes to friendship ("You're My Best Friend"). Queen had recently been screwed by their record label, so the impetus to take digs at contemporary British life in the same vein as Pink Floyd or Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles was certainly there. As a whole, you can say that this is a profoundly original album, but not necessarily because of the "experimentation." The integration of different pre-rock genres into rock had been done in rock before, albeit rarely this skillfully. The element that raised all of this above board, that made the work as a whole original, is "Bohemian Rhapsody." The song that made rock an opera. The song that, according to Nick Kent, made everyone want to kill themselves after it spent ten weeks at number one. Removed from the context of its album, this was a moment when rock became less a meaningful social practice and more a part of the spectacle. No wonder punk became necessary. "God Save the Queen" indeed.
a classiccc te amo freddy
An album of absolute highs and “well it’s good if you like that kind of thing”.
kind of didn't hit me on first listen but on repeated listens it grew on me and I quite like it even though I'm not a big queen fan there's some really fun tracks and the guitar work is sublime highly recommend
Solid listen overall. ‘39 definitely was a sneaky good song.
A lot of range on this album, I'm not a big Queen fan so I was surprised to hear someone other than Freddie Mercury singing.
The album that rose Queen to superstardom. There aren't many who don't know Bohemian Rhapsody and You're My Best Friend, and Love Of My Life is an underrated track of theirs.
never really heard much queen aside from The Hits so this was an interesting listen. it's pretty damn good in places but a little hit and miss overall i think? although tbh i'm not even sure i'd exactly call the tracks i don't enjoy so much "misses", more just, "too twee for me". it sometimes feels like they were more interested in scoring a musical than putting together an album. aside from the obvious banger "bohemian rhapsody", i think my favourites are "i'm in love with my car", "'39" and "the prophet's song". i enjoy freddie mercury's vocals, and brian may's are pretty good too, and and the instrumentals are great when they're not verging far enough into show tunes type bullshit to get irritating. good enough that i can look past those moments to give this 4 stars, apparently. although it took quite a while to make that decision......
Operatic prog rock, mostly! They have a good range of sounds, through in some baroque and some classic rock elements. I would remove about three songs and this would be a great album.
8/10
Album 257. A Night At The Opera (https://open.spotify.com/album/1TSZDcvlPtAnekTaItI3qO?si=KiSnbxgwRNOTh_1jNvHeDQ) — Queen (1975) Absolute classic album, best of the best. Theatrical, musical, epic. Can't give it the highest rate unfortunately, too many average songs amid bangers. 4/5 Liked: — Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To...) — Seaside Rendezvous — Love Of My Life — Bohemian Rhapsody
Yep.
I've heard the term "rock opera" before, and I'm wondering if that's what this sounds like. I actually had that thought before I internalized the title of this album. I bet that's what makes Freddy mercury's music so entertaining, especially when it's executed on such a high level. He explores many shades of the rock world, but every song is theatrical and energetic. The compositions are very dynamic and all over the place as if they were accompanying the events of a stage play. The guitar playing and other instrumentation are great, but as a singer, the highlight for me has to be the layered vocals. I could see arguments for the grandiosity being excessive at times, but for the most part, I'm won over and feel confident with a 4
I like: The vocal breakdown on The Prophet's Song The vocal harmonies on Love of My Life The vocal harmonies in general How fun the first four tracks are The silly vaudevillian, music hall stuff I dislike: The more straightforward rock sections like on Sweet Lady The syrupy Broadway sections (Seaside Rendezvous is very fun, I'm just not always in the mood) So I don't think I can give it a 5 because parts of it are hard for me to stomach, but. . . . It's a delightful record, full of delights!
This is such a fun album I really like I am in love with my car. You're my bestfriend is good. I like the guitar in '39. I like Seaside Rendevous and sweet lady. This album does have Bohemian Rhapsody so i feel like it needs to be a 4 star album.
Queen is singular. Can’t think of another band like them. The piano, Freddie’s vocals, the overdub harmonies (which were a little over done on these) and of course Brian’s guitar tone and phrasing. Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece. A few other good songs on here but not my favorite Queen. Seaside Rendezvous is a little too much for me. While I’d love to round up on the merits of Bohemian, just not enough other stuff here. 4.25
“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality. Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see.”
Really fun album. I love how many genres it touches. My main complaints are I’m In Love With My Car and God Save The Queen. The God Save The Queen thing is just that I’m a Brit who thinks our national anthem SUCKS. This is a pretty good version of it to be fair. Just think I’m In Love With My Car isn’t a very good song, but I’m also very much not a car person. Aside from those two, it’s a great album that lifted my spirits on a not so great office day. Although, the Managing Director at my company mentioned Bohemian Rhapsody today and when I told him I’d just been listening to it, he proceeded to explain to me that it doesn’t have a chorus as though I hadn’t Just Been Listening To It. I was already familiar with a lot of the songs but I’d never heard '39 before and I really loved it. Fav song: Bohemian Rhapsody – also liked You’re My Best Friend, Love Of My Life and '39 Least fav: I’m In Love With My Car
The way some of the reviews went on about it I thought I’m In Love With My Car would be the worst song I’d ever heard but it was pretty fun! And as someone who knows nothing about (and doesn’t care about) cars it’s exactly how car people sound when they talk about their cars. Favourite song: Bohemian Rhapsody (or ‘39) Least: The Prophet’s Song
I kinda love Queen. I wasn’t too sure when I only know the big hits (as so many do) so I wondered how boring an entire album from them could be. But no, it’s delirious right from the beginning. I should have known better.
¡Death On Two Legs es definitvamente una GRAN introducción a éste álbum!
Absolutely great record. Each track blends nicely into the next, making this a really enjoyable listening experience. Favourite Track(s): Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend Least Favourite Track(s): '39
there's like 3 skips on here. the rest are classics
Becoming more of the Queen I recognise than 'Queen II' - still some mad prog tracks ('The Prophet Song') but ''39' and 'You're My Best Friend' shows the diversity I like in Queen. Good album.
Love Queen and while I think some of their most iconic songs are on this album some songs like Sweet Lady and Seaside Rendezvous don't really work for me.
all time fave 5/5
I like the band and have heard a lot of their songs. I had listened to most of the album but never to it complete fist part is just... funny and whimsical rock, a lot of classic songs that I've liked since I was in high school. but listening to them all together feels kinda... boring? not much new, makes me switch between 3 and 4 Prophet song is a nice surprise after seaside rendezvous and does feel like a nice switch after all the fun. Queen are known for a reason. And the fact that they can make fun catchy songs and throw a nice intense song after I think is one of those. Gotta admit that I did not know this song, and it does feel quite good. Production is odd tho, plain? may be headphones Good company should be in the first half. You could have had a perfect run but good company is there and not in the first half 4. Fun first half that remains catchy and fun for years, not ground breaking. A good end, if we ignore good company being there. The first half foes get kinda boring at some point if you listen to them de corrido
Classic
Queen is one of those bands that I think is good, but I feel like I don't like them as much as I'm supposed to. So honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this album. But even aside from Bohemian Rhapsody, there was a lot of enjoyable stuff on this album.
Bohemian Rhapsody. That is all. Well, actually, it’s not, but by God, what a song. I could listen to it all day. It’s raucous, it’s operatic, it’s ridiculous, and it has endured and prospered over many years - more than 50 now!!! May its legacy live on for many more years. Oh, and the rest of the album is pretty great, too.
el álbum en su conjunto: 2. pero hay joyitas, no puedo ponerle menos
First full length Queen album I've ever listened to. Was never a big fan growing up... but their singles have grown on me as I've gotten older. This album is great, though. While I simultaneously can't believe I've slept on Queen for so long, I don't know that I would've appreciated them before.
Ok, The Prophet's Song drove me a little batty, but otherwise this is a solid album. You're My Best Friend is a favorite, and Bohemian Rhapsody is of course legendary.
Death on two legs : 9/10 Lazing on a Sunday afternoon : 8/10 I’m in love with my car : 9/10 You’re my best friend : 7/10 ‘39 : 6/10 Sweet lady : 9/10 Seaside rendezvous: 7/10 The prophet’s song : 6.5/10 Love of my life : 8/10 Good company : 8/10 Bohemian rhapsody : 10/10 God save the queen : 10/10
Some great stuff here, but not consistently so. Like most albums there are some rough spots. The song '39 was frankly, strange and Sweet Lady isn't that great, but Love of My Life and Bohemian Rhapsody are so wonderful as to make up for a couple of the shaky ones.
not as great as the hits, i like '39 4/5
This album for me is mostly carried by 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and a few of the other tracks. This is also very obvious when you look at the number of plays for each track where in my dataset most of the tracks on the album average ~10m plays and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has ~3 billion. Queen has better albums in my opinion, but it's interesting to see how it all really started taking shape on this one Standouts You're My Best Friend Bohemian Rhapsody 4/5
bello, coerente
one of my favorite queen records, not only because bohemian rhapsody is on there, but the artistry is so fulfilling and timeless that i struggle myself to catch up with it, even if i'm well aware it has an intention behind it.
Reminded me of Katie, so I texted her, and she happens to have this record on her wall! Bohemian Rhapsody is obviously one of the greatest songs of all time. I enjoyed reading more about the lyrics and structure. Seaside Rendezvous was a vibe, had me bopping at my desk.
Opera is fucking right! This album is melodramatic, grandiose and sporadic. I think I used this term to describe Bowie's "Station to Station", but there's a certain whirling dervish nature to this record; it sort of spins and spins and spins so far off the stage, diving into the pit, and gnawing at the seats of the auditorium. This album has every right to be on this list, and the influence that has trickled down into modern music is undeniable. 4/5
Now I know that this is a pretty good album
This is definitely a classic record.
some generational music on here - love of my life is a personal favourite for me and has been for many years. but groundbreaking work is flanked with songs i’d never choose to come back to and that’s why it can’t be a 5.
Carried by Bohemian Rhapsody, but that's not a bad thing
Growing up I always just heard the Best Of albums. It's nice to listen to an original album all the way through without the cherry picked "best" songs but the entire mix the way the band wanted it. Classic album.
Ymmärrän kyllä, miksi levy on listalla, vaikka Queen ei omiin suosikkeihin ole koskaan kuulunut.
Aikast hieno levy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Loistava albumi, paljon erilaista kamaa kyllä. Välillä jopa vähän outoa menoa.
Mostly great, with a few misses in there.
*A Night at The Opera* I know my hot take of Queen is I firmly believe *News of the World* and *Jazz* not not because of the hit songs but in spite of big hits. I'll put "Mustapha", "All Dead, All Dead", "Jealousy", "Spread Your Wings", "Deramer's Ball", "It's Late", "Dead on Time", and "My Melancholy Blues" toe to toe with most of the album tracks from their first five albums. That being said this is my third favorite Queen album. In no small part from the two monster hits "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Your My Best Friend" As well as May's "'39" and Mercury's "Love of My Life". And Freddy's 3 McCartney-esque granny songs are a real fun treat. But the highlight of the album is the miraculous a capella round section of "The Prophet Song" which if you listen to this on a cherry stereo system right in the middle sweet spot, the vocals just absolutely surrounds you. (unfortunately the rest of the song is kinda meh) There's a few tracks most notably "I'm In Love With My Car", "Sweet Lady", and to a lesser extent "Death on Two Legs" that really are not really great examples of Queen at this juncture. (9.6) ★★★★½
4 pelos bangers, mas não adoro a primeira metade do album
I found this album, like many of a similar age, via Wayne & Garth. I’m grateful for that introduction. It’s fostered many memories and enlightening conversations. There are a couple of stinkers here, but for the large part, the songs are solid. The production throughout is near perfect.
I usually don't love music that is this overly theatrical. HOWEVER I'm obsessed with how unapologetically campy and fun this is. There is the the perfect amount of lighter jingly songs sprinkled in that make the power ballads hit so much harder. It borrows from bunch of genres and is kinda all over the place but somehow keeps a consistent sound that is so uniquely Queen. Everything perfectly builds up to Bohemian rhapsody which obviously slaps and is the highlight of the album. I'm so close to giving this a 5 but I'm back in my dickhead critic era :/
i liked it, i already knew bohemian rhapsody (who doesn't?), an overall, a pretty good and cohesive album
It is Queen. Not as consistently great as A KIND OF MAGIC, THE GAME, or THE WORKS, but it does have "Bohemian Rhapsody" (an all time standard) and one of the best friendship songs of all time in "You're My Best Friend", so it gets at least a 4. My other favorites: "I'm in Love With My Car" and "God Save the Queen" (who doesn't love this rendition of cheeky humor?)
viele delay-effekte (war wohl neu damals). Mit dem Klassiker Bohemian Rhapsody, welches um Längen besser ist als der Rest des Albums.
Obviously, you have to have Bohemian Rhapsody on here. It's one of the greatest masterpieces of musical history. That being said, the rest of the album is distinctly mid, especially by Queen standards. '39 was a revelation, but otherwise it was all bland noise.
Some classic Queen songs on that good album, including the outstanding magnus opum Bohemian Rhapsody.
I like this album. It's got some massive hits on it that were rightly huge. And I even like songs that come across a bit tongue and cheek. There are a couple songs to skip but it comes across adventurous and fun
minus 1 for prophet's song/love of my life, where it drags, even if prophet has some cool stuff going on and is still in my head
70s pop rock. Established them. Rock opera. Contains THAT song.
Queen, operatic rock. Bit glammy, mixed with a pub knees-up. Plus the multi-layered vocal harmonies. What's up with 39? Doesn't even sound like Freddie? The Prophet's Song is cool, almost epic metal-y. And then there's a crazy acapella Freddie harmony section. It's really impressive but does break the flow of the song a bit. Best track - Death on Two Legs, Seaside Rendezvous, The Prophet's Song 4 stars - it doesn't blow me away but I'm sure that's just because Queen's style is so so famous that it's hard to appreciate the utter skill and vision it took to make this.
Pretty darn good.
Mozart wishes he could’ve came up with this. This shit rocks
I’m not a huge Queen fan so wasn’t sure what to expect here. In the end it’s a pretty good listen, but not one that’s persuaded me to do a deep dive into their back catalogue. The songs everyone will know are You’re My Best Friend and Bohemian Rhapsody (I can’t fully decide if it’s overrated or not, but still a highlight). The early songs are probably the best of the rest, with the quality lessening a bit as it goes on- I can’t say I’d join anything The Prophet’s Song tried to convert me to. A good listen, but didn’t blow me away.
The greatest song of all time, 2 great tunes, and a lot of mid
7.5/10 I like how much it sounds like a mix of musical theater with rock music, but the quality of the songs is a bit inconsistent.
Always a surprise on a Queen album. Maybe it’s my musical theater background, but even the weirder tracks I just find delightful. Then the next song often ends up being a rock classic with a huge sound. Admittedly, there’s more whimsy than rock on this one. I’m not disappointed. You’re My Best Friend Bohemian Rhapsody
I needed two listens of this to really start to appreciate it. '39 was really good and I'd never heard it before
Not quite 5 stars for me, but the hits are so big on this one that they are worth 4 almost on their own. That said there are some other great moments - the opener actually shreds, and '39 was a great songs that I'd maybe heard but never really listened to before (the choral aaaaahs? time dilation?!). The jaunty little British cabaret numbers are so fun (Lazing, Seaside Rendezvous, and Good Company). Not much more to say about Bohemian Rhapsody honestly but there really isn't anything like it in the rock canon that I know of, and it has its place there for a reason. The Prophet's Song I'm positive I'd never heard before (somehow) and is pretty great with the stacked acapella harmony section. Overall a really fun listen.
Probably the only Queen album I like??? Not sure but I think its a fine enough listen and made very well considering its a concept album/rock opera. Also has the most popular rock song of all time on it, so.
Bohemian Rhapsody still gives me the chills. When a song does that, it makes an impression. I’ve noted before that I’m not much of a Queen fan, but this is a good album. Would I listen again? Probably not. 4 for the shivers.
RATING: 9.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: You’re My Best Friend LOWLIGHT: God Save the Queen
Bäst You're my best friend, 39, The prophet's song, Love of my life, Bohemian Rhapsody
Hmm the first part of the album is very much like the Beatles. Never realised how much Queen started out inspired by the Beatles. Bohemian Rhapsody sounds otherwordly in comparison 4/5
Surprise opening song. I like the concept of Lazing on a Sunday afternoon - looks like they have a great week with many activities - life's good! Love of My Life, Bohemian Rhapsody Hype vibe, but not too hit me.
Muy bueno, es para escuchar como disco, en conjunto, porque se vuelve más coherente, entiendo perfectamente por qué tuvo que ser rompedor para la época, muy experimental.
Cracking nonsense. Possibly not their best overall, but still excellent.
Додаткова зірка чисто за “Рапсодію“.
What a great album. Love the tone on Brian May's guitar
'39 is excellent, not to mention favorites like You'Re My Best Friend, I'm In Love With My Car, Prophet's Song, Love of My Life, and of course, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Bra album! Första halvan speciellt var mycket rockigare än jag trodde det skulle vara. Man hör definitivt att det är Queen i alla fall
overrated af in my opinion. 4.0
Exactly what it says on the tin. It’s goofy, it’s drama, it’s Freddie putting his whole entire thrussy in it. I really like how the guitar maintains its distinct sound while integrating with the more musically theatrical pieces, but also I think the piano is perhaps a bit underrated when talking about Queen. Especially when it gets classical, it absolutely would not be the same album without it. A delight from start to finish that flies by.
such a fun and theatrical listen! favourite song you're my best friend.
queen is good
Brian May’s transcendent and underrated guitar… Vocals bigger than the band… Such a unique sound for the time…
There's some forgettable songs on here of course, but it's such a classic album. The harmonies, production quality, and musicianship are top notch.
For sure it had more of an impact 50-something years ago. It's still a fun album with some classic singles on it.
Classic
I've never listened to a full queen album before, only the greatest hits (1,2,3) compilations I had as a kid. Felt very coherent (which I had imagined would be hard with bohemian rhapsody on there) but definitely a couple of flops that were pretty clowny (but isn't queen anyway). I can excuse it (again because it's queen) but the national anthem at the end was kind of funny.
muuuuy innovador, combina ópera y rock. tiene temones como bohemian rhapsody y love of my life, que ya conocía. temas nuevos a destacar: - ‘39 - seaside rendezvous (muy loco)
There are some songs I’m not crazy about, but the highlights are among my favorite Queen songs up to this point in their catalog. The two big hits deserve all the praise they get, in my opinion. “You’re My Best Friend” is an absolutely perfect pop song, and “Bohemian Rhapsody” is nothing short of brilliant. I know that overexposure and hype has probably ruined it for some people, but for me, it’s like “Stairway to Heaven” and “Like a Rolling Stone”: if I take time away from it and go back to it when I’m ready, its excellence is irrefutable. As for new discoveries, I really like the melody and Freddie’s vocal performance on “Sweet Lady”, I think Brian sounds awesome on “‘39”, and “The Prophet’s Song”, particularly the vocal breakdown, is nothing short of legendary. 4/5
This album is overflowing with ideas, but somehow it still holds together. 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱 is pure pop perfection and also a reminder that John Deacon could write genuinely great songs. ’𝟯𝟵 gives Brian May one of the warmest moments on the record, and 𝗜’𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿 is oddly entertaining in a way only Queen could pull off, especially with Roger Taylor singing it. And then there’s 𝗕𝗼𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗼𝗱𝘆, which still sounds completely absurd and completely brilliant at the same time. What makes 𝘈 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢 special is how naturally it moves between styles. Hard rock, piano ballads, music hall theatrics — it all flows together without losing its identity. A lot of that comes down to Freddie Mercury. No matter how dramatic or over-the-top the album gets, he keeps everything believable through sheer charisma and presence. It’s definitely excessive, sometimes almost ridiculously so, but that’s also part of the charm. The album feels like a band realizing they can do almost anything and actually pulling most of it off.
Bangers on bangers!
I wanted to like this album more than I did. I adore a lot of Queen's songs. The hits are amazing and the harmonies are second to none. I guess there's a reason I haven't heard many of the other tracks on this album. But the two hits on this album are so iconic that it really boosts the entire album, but not enough for a 5 star rating.
nada mas que decir, 4/5
Does anybody know a person who claims Queen is their favorite band? For a band this good you would think they are somebody's favorite band but I have never heard anyone say it. This album is great.
It was a bit of a struggle to get through this. Immediately identifiable as Queen on the tracks with Freddie Mercury doing the vocals (why on earth was he not doing all the singing) and of course Brian May's guitar sound. Piano was well used along with the occasional other instrument ike the banjo. What was surprising was the sense that many tracks were ditties. It seems to give us very impoverished versions of the Bohemian rhapsody approach. Overall, not Queen at their best but you can see how they were evolving. Surprising to find Bohemian rhapsody here really, which of course is an amazing track. It sure stands out.
A while back, we had Queen’s preceding album to this, Sheer Heart Attack. I gave that 4 stars, and I stand by that rating. I’m also giving this 4 stars, but for a different reason. They’re both good albums, and the fact they were released back to back is a creative accomplishment in itself. This album does have some amazing songs, but also some fluff. And, in the case of I’m in Love With My Car, a really bad song too. This album lacks the consistency of Sheer Heart Attack, but the standout tracks, Bohemian Rhapsody and You’re My Best Friend, are so unbelievably fantastic that it merits a rating higher than 3 stars.
Me gusta pero Queen los tiene mejores en mi opinión
i really like i’m in love with my car, definitely fav song off of first listen and ‘39 is good i’ve never really gotten into queen other than the basics so i like that im expanding solid 7/10
queen is klassiek!! super goed maar niet een van m’n favs dus 4
Wow, a great listen all the way through, with the vocals, guitar, and theatrics one would expect, plus some surprises.
It was great! I love cabaret and dramatic esc music. I felt like i was listening to a barbershop quartet my favorite was the isolated vocals from The Prophets Song. I was levitating
I don't know how many times I listened to this back in the day and it's been decades since I last listened. Death On Two Legs made me think of Alice Cooper right off the bat as did the theatrical nature of other songs. Mercury and May were channeling cutesy Paul McCartney on Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, Seaside Rendezvous and Good Company. Queen was much more infatuated with their voices in The Prophets Song than I was. I'm not much of a Queen fan but this was pretty solid and brought me back to my high school days.
What an album! Every song a hit and listen worthy. If I want some inspo for pop I can go there.
A band that can do anything - and (mostly) decides to goof around
Iconic, remastered version brings great music quality
there are some really high highs on this album. Death on Two Legs is a fucking banger of an opener. '39 is a proto-stomp-clap-hey song with some tact, subtlety, and music hall flourish. crazy that i'd never heard it before now, because it rocks. conversely, i don't really like Bohemian Rhapsody and think that The Prophet's Song is a better introduction to prog rock. i'd even go so far as to say that i like Seaside Rendezvous and Good Company more. deserves to be one of the 1001? yes and you know what. you can cut the other two Queen picks. they don't offer anything on the level of this
Pfff de puta madre, voy a destacar la ecualizacion y el juego que hacen con los sonidos eñ stereo. Simplemente obra de arte. Voy a poner 4 pero para dejar margen. Es un 5
ICONIC!!!!
Excellent. Of course a classic. Might be a 5 if it wasn’t for the fluff.
Great album - if you think of the whole album as a larger version of Bohemian Rhapsody it's even better. Almost a 5 but not quite.
Awesome
Amazing
I've never actually sat down and listened to a full Queen album front to back. This was pretty much what I expected from Queen. The hits are great and the deep cuts ain't half bad either.
Listened at Costco. It's Queen so of course it's great, and it's got Bohemian Rhapsody, You're My Best Friend, Love of my Life, but man there are some real stinkers on here too. The production is also weird sometimes. Keeps it from being an all time classic in my opinion.
bellino
wasnt planning on listening to this since they are overrated and I dont enjoy listening to the same ten songs on the radio over and over again. now I appreciate them more. I like this album because I prefer them during their early progressive rock era rather than going poppy when they got really popular. I would like to listen to sheer heart attack and news of the world someday though
Very good album. A classic. It contains some songs that get 10 points out of 10 ("Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Death on two legs" come to mind). I also think "You're my best friend" or "I'm in love with my car" are very good. However, I found 3 or 4 songs pretty average ("Lazing on a saturday afternoon", "Seaside rendevouz", "Good company"). For this reason, this ends up getting 4 stars.
Really liked it. I knew a few of the songs, but I never knew how smoothly they all flowed together from song to song.
Groundbreaking! But leaving the five stars for an album without a so-so song. Some tracks in this one deserve many more than five…
Love it!
Queen is classic. Some good stuff on this album.
Wow! This one truly blew me away. I don't even know how to describe what I loved so much about this album. Listening to it just made me so happy
Bohemian Rhapsody, but most of the rest of the album is meh
You know what this album was what finally convinced me that queen is worth their fame. Overral a very solid and no skip album. Tracklist & ratings 1. Death On Two Legs 4,5/5 2. Lazing On A Sunday 4/5 3. I'm In Love With My Car 4/5 4. You're My Best Friend 4/5 5. 39' 4/5 6. Sweet Lady 4/5 7. Seaside Rendezvous 3,5/5 8. The Prophet's Song 5/5 9. Love Of My Life 4/5 10. Good Company 4/5 11. Bohemian Rhapsody 4,5/5 12. God Save The Queen 3,5/5
Once you get over the hits, you realize most of this album isn't that great. Freddie still delivers and when it's good, it's real good! Hell, I'll give it a 4 just for Bohemian Rhapsody.
Bunch of truly epic songs that deserve 10 stars each, but bunch of shitty and mediocre ones too... So, as much as I love Queen and those epic songs out there, as a complete album it gets 4. Sorry folks.
Like reviewing 7 different albums. No one jumps through genres quite as much (or as smoothly!) as these guys. Imagine writing bohemian rhapsody and then putting it on the same album as im in love with my car. generational! only knocking down to 4 because some of the non-BH songs were a bit forgettable.
The mixing is really nice, especially with all the panning.
1 - Death on Two Legs (a strange ambient opening makes way for a glitchy guitar intro, which sounds like the instrument itself is rebelling against Brian May. Mercury's trademark multilayered, theatrical stylings do much of the heavy lifting on this song, which is quite a bit darker in colour than most of the other songs, making it a distinct standout track on this album) 4/5 2 - Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon (an old-timey music hall interlude which honestly sounds like an old English folk tune updated for the 1930s. That is, until May's guitar kicks in. Very memorable for its camp factor) 3.5/5 3 - I'm in Love with My Car (I was absolutely not expecting the huge symphonic intro leading in from the previous track. Taylor's gritty performance sells the passion and infatuation (?) The song is no philosophical piece and is so overblown and maximalist it makes up for how silly it is under the surface) 4/5 4 - You're My Best Friend (an iconic single that, to me, stands out for the electric piano that anchors it. A soaring track that brings a smile to my face every time I hear it (which is a lot given rock radio overplay.) Mercury gives a wonderful performance that I would rank among his best) 4/5 5 - '39 (a folky acoustic tune sung by Brian May. The cosmic imagery in the lyrics belies how earthy it sounds, and its upbeat sound hides the sadness behind the lyrics. A very interesting addition to this album though outside of its context it's pretty by the numbers pop rock for this era) 3.5/5 6 - Sweet Lady (a much more conventional bombastic track to end the first half. This song has the rare quality where it sounds like a single but also doesn't. It feels like the band doesn't know where to take the song past its simple chorus so it thrashes for a bit and ends off with a guitar solo. Decent enough I guess) 3.5/5 7 - Seaside Rendezvous (another piano led music hall piece for the true end of the first half. It's cutesier than the previous one. Eventually it grows into a jaunty show tune type of song which, honestly, is unsurprising given how over the top Queen were) 3.5/5 8 - The Prophet's Song (an epic, multi-part piece very representative of the prog rock of ites era. Funiily enough, prog would be on its way out just a year or 2 later. Every singer involved gives it their all and then some in an absolute scenery-chewing performance from Mercury. May and Taylor serve the extensive back-up sections well with dense, layered harmonies. The "now I know" section almost halfway through almost sounds medieval compared to the more modern earlier sections. The searing guitar solo towards the end wakes the listener up from the layered madrigal section and the closes with a final blast of bombast followed by a subdued outro which brings everything full circle. Definitely the highlight of this album and among the most overlooked and underrated songs in Queen's catalogue) 5/5 9 - Love of My Life (the calm acoustic outro of the previous song leads to the overwrought piano ballad. Mercury wrote this song for the woman he said he loved most, which somewhat contrasts the exclusively gay imagery Mercury became associated with in the years following his death. More layered harmonies really turn things up a notch for this otherwise acceptable but standard love song) 3.5/5 10 - Good Company (another music hall interlude, this time accompanied by a simple strummed guitar. This one bounces just the same as the previous ones and highlights what they were put on this album to do; break the tension and function as musical palate cleansers to not make the loudness and bombast so overbearing. This one is fine and the most fully developed of the 3 on this album. It sort of sounds like a song Gabriel-era Genesis would have done, now that I think about it. The spaced-out section 2 minutes in solidifies that, as does the strange carnival-sounding ending section) 3.5/5 11 - Bohemian Rhapsody (we all know what this one is; an absolute anomaly, a monument of popular music, and also overplayed to Hell and back. It functions perfectly in the context of this album though as, alongside the Prophet's Song, it's one of the 2 giants dominating this side of the album, and maybe the rest of it too. The 3 (4?) main sections flow very well despite how disparate they are, and the lyrics are a lot more obscure than the song's popularity suggests; what other song can make normies sing about Scaramouche and invoke Bismillah? Despite how overplayed and overhyped the song might be it's one of very few I would say are worth putting on a new Voyager Gold Record) 4.5/5 12 - God Save the Queen (the album closes with a rendition of the British anthem as played by May and a multitude of overlaid guitars. The drumrolls add to the fanfare feel. I suppose there's no better way to end an album so distinctly British as this one) 3.5/5 OVERALL - 8.4/10
I'm still nowhere near believing that Queen have a studio album that's anywhere near as good as the Greatest Hits LP. But this one feels a lot more coherent and album-y than Sheer Heart Attack. It's got some fun proggy/theatrical moments, without going overboard or getting self-indulgent. And there are plenty of good songs outside of the obvious. Added to which, 'the obvious' is of course one of the greatest songs of all time, so it bears full consideration as part of this album. I'm still puzzled as to why the 'Night' album has a white cover and the 'Day' album has a black cover, though.
Muy bueno, realmente no soy fan de Queen, este disco lo conozco principalmente por "Bohemian Rhapsody" , pero es un disco que rompe hoy con el molde estando en 2026 me imagino en 1975. Resalto la canción "You're My Best Friend"
8/10
YEAHHH good pull. Bohemian Rhapsody gives me Tinglesss.
A classic that I've never actually listened to in full. Unlike a lot of other albums like this, I feel like the best songs on here are the ones that got a lot of fame and air play. I can recognise how good this while also admitting that I don't think it's for me. I do like the more dramatic and intense songs but the lighter hearted stuff and the baffling I'm in love with my car did nothing for me. It feels mad but I'm thinking of a 3.5 (but I'll put a 4 since it's such a classic.)
This album came out the gate swingin. I mean... WHAT AN INTRO. Also, can we get a round of applause for those wonderful guitar solos. This is a lovely album with many different sounds and it's only 44 minutes. Amazing!!
A fun, diverse record with bit hits (Best Friend, Bohemian Rhapsody). It's a 3.5/5.
This album was a blast! I've never actually heard a Queen album front to back before, and this was as theatric as I expected (both from the title of the album and my knowledge of Queen), but was way more silly and fun than I anticipated. The too-long a capella section in "The Prophet's Song" as well as "Love of My Life" kept this from getting a five star rating, but damn this was a great listen. Will be listening to this one again, and can't wait for more Queen!
It was fun to be reminded of how playful this album is. How surprising that a band could channel the 1930s as well as play operatic rock and roll in the 1970s and be hugely popular. I don't enjoy every song but I respect its boldness.
Уже знал этот альбом и слушал. Один из лучших у Queen. Содержит песни разных жанров, дарит разнообразные эмоции, слушается очень легко и интересно (то есть нет чувства затянутости). Плохих песен нет, но есть одна средняя (I'm in love with my car). На альбоме есть несколько шедевров (Bohemian Rhapsody, Love of My Life, You're My Best Friend). Не входит в число моих самых любимых, но всё равно любимый.
Te amo queen
Un clásico
A Classic No Noted for this one or else i’ll be copying everyone’s Review. Boheiam Rhapsody,Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon and Sweet Lady! 4.5/5- GEMV (4.04.2026)
Very theatrical album, i enjoyed the trip the band took me throughout the album. Able to blend hard rock with elegance. And ofc, freddie mercury and his showmanship is amazing.
The album with “Bohemian Rhapsody” I guess should of course be in the 1001 and there’s other great moments too. Mercury shines elsewhere on the tender “Love of My Life” and in particular the blistering takedown of opener “Death on Two Legs” however his vaudeville tendency is perfectly well represented by the 1 minute “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon” without going again for 2 minutes with “Seaside Rendezvous”. The sole writing contributions from the rhythm section go from the sublime (Deacon’s flawless “You’re My Best Friend”) to the ridiculous (Taylor’s preposterous “I’m in Love with My Car”). Brian May while delivering time after time with his guitar input across the whole album is not matching those standards with the pen. Aside from the extravagant, rambling “The Prophet’s Song”, I’m left coldly indifferent to his songs here. Knowing what he is capable of, it is disappointing that such an important Queen album doesn’t feature any of his best. A big record for the band, but I wish I was able to be warning listeners not to miss out on hidden gems next to the established masterpiece that dominates the album. It’s a solid 3.5 but I’d feel bad rounding down.
