There is also a thing as "too much Kate Bush"... The constant up-and-down with her high voice is quite annoying.

I read the entry and the artistic regard, but it’s very difficult to listen to.

She is truly an inspiration for tone deaf people everywhere

I’m only familiar with Running Up That Hill from Stranger Things. Unfortunately, Kate is not the type of artist that I gravitate towards.

Dit is het derde en laatste album van Kate Bush dat we voor onze kiezen krijgen. Dat check ik toch altijd even van tevoren, zeker zo op het einde van de lijst. Wat me daarbij gelijk opvalt, is dat dit dus haar 4e album is dat ze uit heeft gebracht, maar ook het oudste dat in de snoblijst staat. De snobs kiezen er voor om niet het debuut uit te kiezen of uberhaupt een van de eerste drie albums. Die zullen dan wel vrij obscuur zijn, denk je dan. Hoe vaak gebeurt dat niet bij dit soort artiesten? Wat blijkt: haar debuut heeft onder andere "the man with the child in his eyes" en "wuthering heights". Op album 3 staat "Babooshka". Niet zomaar kleine hitjes me dunkt. Bovendien zijn de 1e 3 albums multiplatina gegaan. En dit album: zilver. Het slechts verkochte album van Kate Bush aller tijden. Waarom staat dit in godsnaam in deze lijst??! Waar slaat dit op? De muziek is ook gewoon ronduit kut. Het is vaag, ze wringt haar stem in onmogelijke posities, er zitten slechte geluidseffecten in. En bovendien is het beresaai. De keuze is simpelweg niet uit te leggen. Kies toch gewoon het debuutalbum man, dat heb ik gewoon zonder problemen hierna opgezet. Ik ga voor dit album een hele grote dikke vette 1 geven, omdat de snobs wat mij betreft allemaal ontslagen mogen worden. Wat een stelletje zelfingenomen flapdrollen zijn het toch

Not many times does an album say man What the fuck is this shit This is one of those times I mean sure there’s some cool random sounds. but honestly, like I get it it’s experimental, but that doesn’t mean that it ain’t shit like none of these songs are like catchy make me want to return to the album at all. I mean props to the people that could give this album multiple lessons. it’s a one and done for me Miss Bush like you’re known for running for up that hill and that’s it. As of right now.

This is awful. Kate Bush makes Bjork sound like Aretha Franklin. Kate Bush is incredibly overrated. 80s music sucks. Of course this is one of Bjork's favorite albums. The title track is like a pirate shanty. This is terrible, there is not a single redeeming feature of this album.

My last Kate Bush album. From memory I gave the other 2 a fat 1, so I'm ready for this to be shit too. By about song 2 I knew this was going to be fucked and would be rating this low. I seriously don't get the appeal of Kate Bush, she is probably the most overrated artist from the 80's. The worst song on this fucking album had 18,000,000 streams (Suspended in Gaffa)? Why?? It's annoying at BEST. Anyways, it's not very often I have to give up on an album because it's so terrible - this is one of them. Thank God I never have to listen to another Kate Bush album again in my life.

Alr 80s pop herwego T1 hate the beginning, started to like it as the singer started singing more weird. Seems like a concept album maybe? That’s wild (echoes is the best PF song)

This was just jarring. I wanted to like it, I really did, but the attempts at screams just genuinely made my skin crawl each time. It was a rough listen and borderline painful.

The first album on this list I couldn’t finish

I can honestly say I hate this album, my first one star. I only know her from Stranger things so I woke up cautiously optimistic. I am not impressed with any part of it and at several times found it actively annoying.

I know why the weird theatre girl in high school was into Kate Bush, I don’t know…both weird and leaves no lasting impression. As an odd comparison as this is - sometimes the "i want to say something art-y" conecept album becomes blovated crap...so with the Wall by Pink Floyd so goes The Dreaming.

Not my thing

It's not often that I hear something I really hate, for the entirety of my listen, but this has done it. I think you'll be hard pressed to find a more irritating album than The Dreaming on this list. Every song was just a mess, vocally, instrumentally, you name it. They say if you can't say anything nice to not say anything at all, so I'll leave it at that.

This is just not for me. I really did not like this album at all.

Three fucking Kate Bush albums? Give me a break. I imagine the theater kids like it. I find it constantly irritating. It doesn’t suffer from the awful mid-80s production like her later albums. But there wasn’t a single moment that swept me up the way good music does.

While the previous two Kate Bush albums were tolerable to alright, this album is unlistenable.

Kate Bush is very talented. I’m glad she stopped wasting that talent on weird noises, grunting, and other experimental nonsense.

This album is awful. It’s weird, pretentious and irritating. The vocals are terrible, the lyrics are nonsensical are the music is basic. This list has been a mixed bag. Some good albums, some not so good. Sometimes I can appreciate the talent of the songwriters, but it’s not my style. In those cases, I don’t like to be too harsh with my reviews, but “The Dreaming” is just downright rubbish and I’m irked that someone added it to this list.

I really cannot stand Kate's voice. I know she's very creative, but I just can't do it. So I did not listen.

Pre-listen: So, I've never heard of a R&B/Hip Hop sci-fi concept record, so this is kind of exciting. Listening notes: I love the big-band work. Production is strong. There are a lot of moving parts to this, and it's put together really well. I love the idea better than the execution though...though, to be fair, the genre isn't something I gravitate toward, so that might be part of my problem. Truth is, I think everything is done really well, and it's interesting, at least from a technical standpoint. I think where it falls kinda flat for me is the front half of the record. The back half picks up some, and she goes in some crazy directions musically that I didn’t expect, but the front half kind of drags. Ultimately, I could see where this record would appeal to some people, and I'm not hating on what this seemingly really talented artist is doing here. But, as weird and unexpected and eccentric as the record is as a whole, I probably won’t revisit it on account of the first handful of songs. 3.7/5

I have a friend who is a fan. So I've tried. I tried in the '80s. I tried in the '90s. I tried this morning. I just can't do it. For starters, I'm just not a fan of any 'theatrical' / Baroque style pop music. But I can occasionally get past that with other artists. What I can't get past is her voice. It feels like an ice pick in my eye. I literally feel it more than I hear it. She supposedly has great lyrics, I'll have to take their word for it. I honestly can't make out any words. Just stabbing pain to the brain. She's the only artist I can think of that I have a purely physiological response to.

“There goes a tenner” -someone after buying this album in 1982 and listening to it

Kate Bush is a national treasure. She's broken boundaries, pushed limits, strived to fulfill her very own vision with little or no compromise. She also seems to have quite a self-deprecating sense of humour. So, what's not to like? Well, the fact that her vision just doesn't align with my tastes at all. I'd sit down for a pint with her and I think she'd be great company to chat away an evening. I'd just hope she'd never bring up her music in conversation so we can avoid that awkward silence - or, after a few pints, my very wordy way of trying to express that I mostly appreciate the theoretical concept of what she's doing and how she's doing it, but not so much the actual result.

It’s always pleasing when I find an album here that I like more than I thought I would. This isn’t one of them. This album was often irritating and I don’t need that in my life.

Nope. Not good at all.

Maybe this is my bad for not knowing this album would be a weird concept album posing as the score to an off-broadway musical I would never attend. That is to say, I had expectations (an album of normal Kate Bush songs), and they were unmet. All that being said, if somebody had warned me, I would have come in hating it. It’s like telling somebody the movie will have a twist, and then they’re looking for it. If somebody had said I should prepare for donkey hee-haws and intonations that sounded awkwardly like a drama camp recital, it would also have ruined this album.

God... that was just terrible. Weird to be weird. So glad Kate got her shit together for Hounds of Love a couple years later. It's like night and day between these two albums.

I was today years old when I learnt that Kate Bush sucks. The Dreaming is a bad musical soundtrack. 2.7/10

The only thing this album has going for it is that it tips its hand from the onset and lets you know it’s going to be garbage.

I just did not enjoy this. Cannot think of a situation or mood where I’d be like, “Hell yeah…let’s put on some The Dreaming by Kate Bush.” I’m at a 1.5 was gonna round up because of influence, the one of the high squeals came on in Suspended In Gaffa….thats a 1 son.

This is objectively a terrible sounding album. I had hope for one song but then it quickly turned into a mess. Idk who pissed Kate off and drove her to make this horrendous album but they should be put in prison or stoned to death for their crimes against humanity.

I think I've pretty thoroughly proven throughout this exercise that I do not need to have a traditionally great singing voice to appreciate the music. However, if your singing voice sounds like it's trying to be bad on purpose, I have almost no time for you. Kate, you're a singer-songwriter, for crying out loud. Can you try not using your Bene Gesserit voice on half the songs?

I consider falsetto a technique sparingly as a dramatic effect because it is not a pretty sound... Kate Bush just hangs on it. I cringe every time she goes into scream mode and not in the modern slang sense. actual closed eyes, contorted face cringe in the traditional sense. If you exclude the annoying hi-pitched screams the rest of the album is your classic "weird for the sake of being weird" art pop. The most bearable song was night of the swallow but you can almost hear her shaking from holding back screaming in your ear at the chorus.

Ugh, this was nearly unlistenable. I enjoyed the last KB album, but this album was just irritating. The falsetto's the vocal bouncing paired against the boring music set this up for a giant fail. I might as well listen to Tori Amos.

There are three Kate Bush albums on the list. There don’t need to be. “The Dreaming” has “often characterised as her most uncommercial and experimental release,” and to that I would add “almost unlistenable.” There are some hints of Bush’s talent here, but they are overwhelmed by too many head-scratching moments. Artist should absolutely experiment. But not all of those experiments should leave the studio. I laughed out loud at the ridiculousness of so many parts of “The Dreaming.” NPR made a list of The 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women from a reader’s poll. The 1001 has women underrepresented, but Kate Bush’s three entries isn’t the problem. Somehow “Dreaming” made the NPR list, at #24. 🤷‍♂️. But ahead of it, and not on the 1001, are: Beyoncé - “Lemonade” Adele - “21” (was on but was taken off) Tori Amos - “Boys for Pele” Taylor Swift - “Reputation” (ok I don’t agree with this one) Then after 24, but also more deserving, are: Melissa Etheridge - “Yes I Am” Neko Case - “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood” Fiona Apple - “The Idler Wheel…” …and on, and on… Adele should have stayed on the list. Swift I could take or leave personally, but she probably deserves more on the list for her popularity and cultural impact. “Fox Confessor” is brilliant, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, and I’d love to see it on the list. But it’s Tori Amos and Fiona Apple that are most directly deserving of one Bush’s three spots. Apple’s “Idler Wheel” and “Fetch the Bolt Cutters” are experimental, like “The Dreaming,” but I think are more listenable (though I’m sure all won’t agree). Amos doesn’t get enough credit for her body of work and the many artists she inspired. Many women are deserving of one of Bush’s three spots, but I’d give it to “Boys for Pele.”

The beat? ass. The flow? Ass. The lyrics? Don’t fucking no (ass) this album makes me want to kill my whole family. A disgrace to the album that came before this. Not a good look for the women community.

What an interesting, creative, quite talented... absolutely unlistenable drivel? I rated two other Kate Bush albums we got so far 3 and 4 stars. So I'm not a great fan of the rest of her work, but I found it at least very listenable. This one was bordering on torture though.

You can tell she’s a good musician but this album was a little strange and all over the place. It didn’t really have an 80s feel about it and sounds like a weird B musical or film soundtrack. Have to say I didn’t enjoy this one very much. It almost became unbearable to listen to at some points.

I thought this would be a good opportunity to understand the cult of Kate Bush. It was and I don't. Weird, scary and unenjoyable.

Love Kate normally but hated this.

Very different sounding voice. She iPad a lot of skill. I was not a fan of the album. On the cover it was interesting because she looks like my niece.

This album has a combination of some of my most hated musical aspects. The canned synths sound horrible, the vocals are shrill and confusingly distorted, her accent is disgusting, the tunes are annoying, and the maximalist production makes sure that everything I hate comes to the forefront. Borderline unlistenable and certainly headache-inducing. 2

Absolute garbage. 1/10. Horrible singing, trash songs.

Definitely not a fan. This was a tough listen.

She is the coolest! I really want to like her but she's too avant-garde for me I think!

Puh, gar nicht mal so gut, stellenweise geradezu unerträglich. Dieses Album will nie so richtig in die Gänge kommen und zieht sich wie Kaugummi. Und David Gilmour durfte…nur mitsingen. Es gibt offenbar Musiker, von denen ich gezielt 2-3 Songs gut finde, und Kate Bush ist offensichtlich eine davon. Ist eigentlich eine Platte von Phil Collins in dieser Liste? Ach, nein? Ich bin überrascht.

Different from anything I've ever heard. Lack of instruments in my opinion, sounds like a lot of keyboards/piano and maybe synthesizers (and of course drums). Some songs sound kind of like modern day pop. Very experimental sound, many uses of he voice. No recognizable or memorable lyrics. Probably wouldn't listen to again. Album Rating: 4/10 , Highlights: Swallow of the Night, Pull the Pin.
