Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Not much of a BB fan, but shake your rump is dope. Some tracks are a pass, some are good. Samples on Looking Down the Barrel was cool. Lol, Car Theif. The deluxe edition has some good additions
Okay Jedes Lied klingt gleich
As far as sophomore albums go, this is a strong one. The Beastie Boys continue their heavy sample based tracks, quick rhymes, and further established their voice. If you were going to boil down the hip hop movement of this time, this would album would be a notable talking point.
Good, even though it isn't my style. I enjoy a song or two, but its hard to listen to the whole album
Good album. Would listen to again
Struggling to rate this - on one hand, the samples are fun, their unique sound should be appreciated, and I like how single songs in this project can sometimes be all over the place. On the other hand, it's a ton of songs that are really hard to follow at times, and listening to this hasn't really made me want to listen to any more of the Beastie Boys' music past this generator. I guess we'll shoot for a middle rating Saved: Shake Your Rump, BBB: Hello Brooklyn
Hmm difficult to choose between 3 or 4 stars. Great music as a background, but not my favorite. 5-Piece Chicken Dinner was awesome.
This album cements why I don't like hip-hop.
Great album! Makes me want to rock out with my cock out!
Imagine a night out with the bestie boys, you’d get up to all kinds of mischief. I particularly enjoyed ‘Egg man’ and the lyrics “Humpty Dumpty was a big fat egg” this song really spoke to me
Experimental but a bit scattered as a result.
Can appreciate it but didn’t enjoy it that much.
Didn’t really enjoy it that much. Never been that into BB. A bit too shouty and hectic. But appreciate how influential and seminal their work is. Can defo here their influence on the likes of NWA and Eminem
Well that was a bit of fun! Some weird lyrics
enjoy the beats but not the vocals
Old school rap, powerful beats, not bad
Some great samples, innovative beats and witty lyrics on this album. I really like some of their singles but after awhile their in yo face style can be a bit grating.
Not as good as Licensed To Ill
Songs: Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun, Shake Your Rump
dope beats fun times
something a bit different. kinda good but not for me
BEASTIES!!!
Funky beats with an almost 70’s feel. Grooving.
Very fun, these guys rule. Had me listening to other beastie boys albums after I was finished cause I wanted more.
It's the most unhinged Beastie Boys, but it leads to some funky jams. Obviously. "Shadrach" is a banger but don't sleep on "The Sound of Science."
Better than their first album by a lot
Ab und zu schon geil. Schöner hiphop mit Funk oder so.
beastie boy
Banebrydende hiphop, rebelsk, punked, begyndelsen af sampling
Classic beastie boys
Not bad, not bad at all. Some songs I really enjoyed, but not too many standouts. I'd say that's a 3.5?
Eh. 5.5/10 FT: Boy Bouillabaisse
Not a big fan of the beastie boys. but alright
Not my favorite
Day 4. I remember I recieved a Beastie Boys cd at some point in my life, listened through it twice and lost it somewhere. For the second time of this challenge the thing autoplayed after the album was more enjoyable than the album itself (Digable planets)
4/10 They really don't make white boys like this anymore.
In what parallel universe do the Beastie Boys get at least 3 albums, which all sound pretty much the same, and are all mediocre and other artists get hardly a look in. Some serious list pruning required, methinks.
Just wasn't feeling this
💿 favourites -Shake Your Rump -Car Thief This sort of sound isn't my taste, but I understand how iconic the Beastie Boys are and why people may gravitate toward their music. I like the cover art of this album.
max top 925 of this list bs: Hey Ladies ws: B-Boy Bouillabaisse get on the mic
- The samples and groove are fun. - The voices get tiring - I just don't really like nasal voices in my music, and this is sooo nasal. - I was going to give it a 3, but I got so tired of it by the end. It's very one-note in terms of the vocals (no variation in anything - tone or cadence) that I just wanted it to be over. I also am not very into jokey music, so this went on way too long for me. - I like their hits as much as the next person, but a whole album is a lot. - Also, fuck off with the sexist lyrics.
Not a huge Beastie Boys fan (or a big fan of rap). Not clear if this is a cohesive album but just a collection of songs by the same artist. 2 stars for me. Feel like I would not miss anything if I never listen to the album again.
The vocals get tiring after the second song it would be lower if it weren't for the beat in the back
Marginally better than Eminem
was expecting more from this, samples were good but a bit samey overall
I unfortunately am not into this album at all. It's maybe not the best introduction into 90's Hip Hop. I will need to do more research on how it was received, particularly by non-white audiences. It is surprisingly vulgar on some tracks, and maybe that is a part of the appeal from that time. There are points of the album that are clever and humorous, but I can't imagine listening to it that often.
The production from the Dust Brothers is the interesting element here. The backing tracks show plenty of creativity and the way they flow into each other makes the album cohesive despite it being comprised of hundreds of samples. Unfortunately, it sounds like Bart Simpson and his friends are rapping all over it. I know it's not supposed to be taken super seriously, but I don't really find any of it clever or funny. It's like they wear their ability to be annoying like a badge of honor. Stuff like this is probably partially responsible for the existence of tedious crap like Bloodhound Gang and Lil Dickey, which should be further marks against it. The Dust Brothers' talents would be put to far better use later on their collaborations with Beck. This avoids the lowest rating simply because of their innovative work here.
The Beastie Boys just don't do it for me sadly
I rly cant with the beastie boys im sorry
not for me but cool to hear how other artists were influenced in the future
well it's.. interesting
Shake Your Rump and Hey Ladies have a bit of Ooomph, but overall not really something I’d listen to again.
I feel like I'm just against consensus on Beastie Boys. Not a fan of the vocal tone nor most of the songs. Not enjoyable to me or something I really want to listen to.
5: 4: Crime of the Century, Pink Flag, Arrival, 3: Darkness on the Edge of Town, Court and Spark 2: Ramones, Paul's Boutique 1: Rain Dogs
Good ol' Beastie Boys. Good album.
This got tiresome very fast, juvenile and repetitive. I never really got into the beastie boys, and i can see why. I get their role in rap and hip hop, and that they have some important songs, but this album just did not do it for me. standout song was B Boy: A year and a day. 2 stars
Some great sounds in here. But I just don't like they're rapping. The voices annoy me on almost all of their songs. A couple of exceptions but not on this record
Not my cuppa
Not my stuff. All very similar. Some cool sampling at times, but the vocals just dont do it for me. 2.5/5
didn't win me over
eh
I've tried many times, I really can't get into Beastie Boys. I am aware this is a titanic amount of work in sampling, overdubs, mixing, etc. I don't want to diminish that - but to my personal ears, I can't give it more than 2/5.
The tracks are good but I just didn't like the vocals at all. They're still and the lyrics are submediocre
not my style, but me gusta la portada
I understand how this was a radical sound at the time but hip hop has been so fleshed out in the interim that most of the songs sound fairly rudimentary now. Some gems of course, but I was sick of it by the end
I can appreciate the lyrics and samples but I just don’t vibe with most of their sound… just not my style.
Shake Your Rump
very repetitive and these guys are not good
I’ve tried to get into hip hop through this challenge, and while there are plenty of albums here that should do it, I still find it a genre I struggle to fully connect with. This is my second album by Beastie Boys, and Paul’s Boutique is undeniably impressive from a musical point of view. The production is superb, the sampling is incredibly creative, and the use of jazz and layered sounds is genuinely brilliant. You can hear just how influential this album has been. Where I struggle is with the vocals and lyrics. They feel quite dated, and at times it makes the album a tougher listen than it should be, especially given how strong the music is underneath. It also lacks some of the big, immediate tracks that made Licensed to Ill so easy to enjoy, although there are still standout moments. Favourite tracks: The Sound of Science, a great example of how strong the production is Least favourite tracks: To All the Girls doesn’t work for me, and it would have been a stronger start if it opened with Shake Your Rump Album artwork: Cool cover, simple but effective
God, I'm glad that's over. I'm sorry but Ad-Rock (I think?)'s voice is SO annoying. Looking Down the Barrell of a Gun not bad tho.
Ziemlich anstrengend
Beastie Boys have always been wack to me 🤷♂️
Always wondered about this album. Turns out... it's rap. On the plus side, there's a lot of creative sampling, the sound is really crisp, and the Boys clearly had fun making it. On the minus side, it's skin-deep rap: guys yelling about stuff that doesn't matter.
I've never really understood Beastie Boys. They are a fun party album for college, but don't seem to be particularly good or innovative
This album just isn't for me. I'm not a big fan of the Beastie Boys but understand their appeal. 2/5 purely on my own enjoyment and is not an objective reflection of the music.
Bit too aggressive where it felt like shouting without much real music accompanying it
couldnt finish. Beatles sample carried
Somehow, this created Eminem
I like the Beastie Boys but this is not their best album
Not a fan of “To all the Girls” it’s okay but it’s got weird low vibes and it’s lowkey creepy… Shake your rump is an insanely different vibe, def like this one more but I couldn’t see myself listening to it unprompted. Johnny royal is pretty good Overall I think the beastie boys are a little to rap-y for me
It ain't no sin to recognize the originality and fun of the Beastie Boys while entertaining the thought that this album might just be kind of annoying.
I honestly don't mind the shouting, I just don't really find myself listening to much hip-hop.
Ehkä 2/5
I stopped this for 3 months instead of listening to this. I liked the samples because I didn’t have to listen to the rest for a couple of seconds.
Never been a fan
Very annoying, but at least they're having a good time being annoying. Funky beats, terrible white guy rapping (with clever rhymes)
rap, fun
I really like the use of sampling and production technique, but the voices of the rappers (too much shouting, whiny) reduces its appeal considerably.
Sadly not one for me
Definitely not for me. My favorite parts of the album were when they were sampling a piece of music I liked and not what they were doing with it. My rating is a reflection of my taste and I am just not a hip hop head.
this is a journey and the sampling is crazy, i understand why people love it and why it's here but i also struggled to get through it
Good grief this is annoying. The music is fine, but my god, having to listen to those whiny, shouty voices for almost an hour is too much.
This is the music that black man is playing when you get picked up hitch hiking.
I know of the band and have heard a few songs before. This album sounded like what I would expect from that earlier knowledge. Its not really something that i love. Its okay to hear a song once in a while but not anything I will seek out or choose if I can change the song.
Not my kind of music - but Hip Hop Gods.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I was amped to finally get my first Beastie Boys assignment since I'm a fan of Licensed to Ill (one of the few Book Albums I actually have in my collection) and since more modern iterations of their sound (take PUNK TACTICS by Joey Valence & Brae, for example) have become some of my favorite rap music of the 21st century, but Paul's Boutique had surprisingly few tracks that truly stood out to me. The trio tried their hand at doing something similar to Abbey Road's Side B medley with "B-Boy Bouillabaisse," but it honestly didn't work at all for me. Hoping I like Ill Communication a bit more! Highlights: Shake Your Rump, The Sounds of Science, Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun, Shadrach
I grew up in this era and I saw them live once (at Lollapalooza where they stole the show from the Smashing Pumpkins) and they were amazing but I can’t bring myself to like them. I will never seek out one of their albums. Clever music and lyrics, good rhymes, but the voices! I just can’t listen to them for more than a few songs without taking a break. Respect the hell out of them but don’t want to listen to them.
A little of this is ok for me but a whole album is not good.
I just don't enjoy their sound
I've never been a fan of hiphop. At least this classic hiphop style. This album hasn't changed my opinion on that. Some samples are really cool. Like the jaws theme. I could never think of something like that. It's just not for me at all. Good flow, sometimes annoying voices, but overall not outright garbage. I just see it as I do all hiphop. It's not doing anything interesting for me.
Po 5 dainų tokių atsibosta repavimo tipas.
I wanted to like this. But it just isn't a very palatable style of music. The Beastie Boys in general really only have a song or 2 worth returning to. The production is good, the songwriting really isn't all that great. The performance seems completely unserious, and to be fair it probably was. Maybe that's part of what makes them who they are, but it just isn't for me. The best thing going for it is that it's unique. I'd rather it stay that way. 2.4/5
Well, it's not as bad as it could be, but this album, again, does not convince me about hip-hop. The samples are well integrated, and, sometimes, they sound nice with the song, but it's still the same boring thing. At least some songs are not that horrible.
too loud and talky?
I’m happy to finally hear a rap album! This album seems quite iconic with its sound, playfulness, funkiness, and lyricism. I don’t like the overall sound though as it is very beat/lyrics heavy and I enjoy melodic music. Big respect to the Beastie Boys of course but I just don’t like their sound. Especially listening to a whole album of them just kinda screaming the whole time, not my thing!
There are a couple of Beastie Boy's tracks that I like, neither of them are on this album!
Lyrically, they're very talented. Quick-witted and full of pop culture references. Unfortunately, I can't stand the yelling and bratty frat bro attitudes. Not an album for me.
Highlights: Shake Your Rump, The Sounds of Science (Beatles sample wow!), Hey Ladies.
meh. Piqued my ears hearing those beatles samples in Sounds of Science, you hardly ever here that
I’m just not into the beastie boys it’s not cool of me
Uninteresting
Not for me.
The Beastie Boys have a unique sound, but halfway through the album I got tired of it and wished they would switch things up. The beats are a little empty as well.
~ we need more cowbell ~ apparently.
It is twice as good as License to ill.
Not a fan! Not unlistenable, but just truly not my type of music and not sure why it’s so well regarded.
Not my style of hip hop. Probably would not relisten. Perhaps if I also read the lyrics at the same time.
Quite enjoyed the B-Boy Bouillabaisse tracks
Great production but the shouty vocals get tiring.
192/1089 this is SO of it’s time, it’s cute and irritating in equal measure it’s always jarring to hear Trump name drops in pre-2016 media the B-Boy Bouillabaisse section was easily the best part of the album imo. it felt pacey and exciting and fresh. i think it they’d cut down the first half a bit, then that pacing could’ve made the album much stronger faves: B-Boy… A Year and A Day, B-Boy… Dropping Names, B-Boy… A.W.O.L. 47/100
I go back and forth on the Beastie Boys. Yes their music was groundbreaking at the time. But sometimes I’m listening to it and it’s just dumb lyrics. Always about the same topics. I’ve enjoyed other albums by them more but this one didn’t hit for me.
It’s not really my cup of tea and I would only listen to it ironically, to be honest. Some of the songs are ok, others are quite annoying, in my opinion.
Standout Tracks: Shake Your Rump - Downhill mountain bike of a flowy trail. Hey Ladies - It's 2004 and you're hanging with the boys playing Halo
Do you like shouting? But not really catchy songs? This is for you. The samples sound interesting; I’d like to hear an instrumental version of this.
Not for me
Not a fan
I didn’t know a single song on this album before, and I’d be fine knowing none after. Why include an album from a band with a bunch of hits when this album has zero?
I gave it up for III Communication, but first-wave Beastie Boys is corny and too derivative of Run DMC. 2.5 rounded down.
I generally am okay with earnestness in music. In most genres, an earnest authenticity is what we (as the listening audience) aspire to hear from our artists and we judge artists that are perceived to be putting on an act. The Beastie Boys just feel too earnest though and wear too much of their schtick on their sleeve.
I found myself listening to more of the music in the samples than the BB themselves. And the rapping was similar across songs.
Not doing it
DNF
You know I really wanted to like this album. I like many of their other records. But this one didn't hit.
3/10
Okay.
Some beastie boy songs are good on their own but this album doesn't have any of them and any more than 4 minutes of then in a row starts to get old. Lyrics aren't cleaver, voice is grating. I just don't think I really like the beastie boys.
A back to back of 90s New York hip-hop. From yesterday’s sublime with Nas, to today’s ridiculous with the Beastie Boys.
Traveled 960 miles in a car today from LA to Portland with a 4 year and 2 year old in back and this was by far the 4 year olds least favorite album. A lot of interesting sounds on here but yes got a point, the vocals are pretty repetitive and annoying and not a ton in the way of killer hooks. Annoying trumps clever every time.
I only know the Beastie Boys from their singles I quite like their singles I did not like this
ok so didnt get a chance to listen to it much, but got some good beats!! not my particular taste, but nice as some background music
I will not speak on the production or historical significance of this album, as I am no expert, however I did not enjoy listening to this, unfortunately
Ei uppoo ei...
No ei tästäkään jäänyt oikein mitään käteen eikä mieleen.
man this sucked i do not enjoy the beastie boys
Decent music, not too shabby, oldschool but not exactly my type but still a decent listen 4/10
Sample game is fire but I just don’t like their rapping tone
I respect it as landmark album in hip-hop, but it's really not my cup of tea and it got so annoying I couldn't finish it.
Had to take 2 runs at this…’not for me.
I really like the production on this album, but I’m surprisingly not that keen on the Beasties delivery. This is firmly the era of Beasties I never quite got, and listening to this now, that hasn’t changed.
Nav priekš manis
It's ok. After a couple songs the rhyme scheme and cadence is to repetitive and predictable. It's not for me
I took like 5 days to listen to this because I just kept stopping. The beastie boys just ain’t my thing, reparative rhyme scheme and style, always rhyming on that damn four. Aware it’s a stylistic choice to sit the vocals way in the back with that signature verb- I’m not into it. I don’t like the space it creates in the mix. Speaking of the mix, I find it pretty uninspiring and flat. Songwriting is decent. But I feel like every song sounds the same on this one. Few interesting beats but even with an interesting beat the vocal performance is the same. I’m not trying to moralistic but I just don’t enjoy listening to the repeated misogynistic lyrics. Yeah yeah yeah it was the time all that, context yada yada. But I just don’t enjoy it. Perhaps the production was unique at the time, but seems overplayed in 2025- and not that interesting to me. Three dudes taking turns yelling at you from different corners of the room. They got hits but I don’t recognise anything on this record.
Trop énervant
Ok album, not as good as other albums
Gah-- I'm just not hip enough anymore. I didn't find much enjoyment from this album except that it was "fun". Ehhhhhhh......
The Beastie Boys are timeless, and their sound as rap and comedy music is on point. I enjoyed this album but the Beastie Boys themselves aren't really my sound.
3/10 Top track: Shadrach
Was very excited when I saw this pop up but man it wasn't for me. Maybe this album didn't land or maybe I'm just not as big a Beastie Boys fan as I thought.
Too many of their songs sound the same. However, there are some whimsical lyrics. I think you either like this band or not. I also believe they really made a career based on one really good song, “you have the right to party”.
Where is the cleverness? This album felt like 75% saying names, lacking the musical spark I love from the Boys.
I couldn't get into this. It just did nothing for me. Yet I like License to Ill.
Despite their hits, have just never really been into them or the whole genre...
I got tired of the shtick after 10 minutes
Sounds like a garage band, my definition of mindless rock
I was interested by the sound at first, but it never really developed and the vocals/lyrics never interested me. I can rock with hip hop, but this seemed mindless and too punky for me.
Down the Barrel of a Gun'). =>2/5
I know it’s an iconic album but maybe you had to be there at the time. Did enjoy there being a song about Shadrach Meshach and Abednego 🤣
I found this to be pretty boring and annoying. Started off ok though.
wasn't feeling it
Fine. I am not big on the Beastie Boys. Don't hate it. They've a very distinct style, and nothing jumps out at me like I need to 'listen to that part again' after listening to the album.
If I have learned something from this list is that I *don't* like the Beastie Boys... It's been 3 albums by these guys already, can we stop?
God beastie boys are crap
Die Songs klingen alle gleich.. Ich mag das nicht
I preferred 'Morris Minor and the Majors'. 'Stutter rap' is classic, and 'another boring b side'. This sounds like a drum machine left in demo mode, while 3 kids bicker over the TV remote control.
One trick ponies. Every song sounds the same. Disappointing
diddn't really like it
I'm sure that they had fun making this album but some of this stuff just doesn't click with me the lyrics are WITTY though. I'll all of a sudden realize what they've said and go "oh shit" and that makes it fun. none of these songs I would listen to again, maybe Johnny Ryall? but it was fun at the beginning and then just repetitive as hell... sorry 6.83/10 2/5?
nah, not into shouting
Probably not a re-listen. Album had its moments with a few good samples from the Beatles and such, but was not my jam.
Beastie Boys take the style but ignore the substance. Not buying it. Bad self? Bad breath? Club Med. Self-parodying.
In the late '90s, I got to interview a band I really liked from NYC and the drummer told me to check out two albums, Clouds Taste Metallic (Flaming Lips) and Paul's Boutique. I loved the Lips album and could relate to nothing going on with the Beastie Boys. No connection. I listened to a great interview with Rick Rubin not too long ago, and I enjoyed hearing him talk about working with the BB way more than actually listening to their obnoxious flavor of rap. Cool that there's a Lips' album to turn to!
Not my genre
For whatever reason I just can't get into the Beastie Boys. So sue me.
Best Song: B-Boy Bouillabaisse: A Year And A Day. At least the instrumentals are mixed loud enough to compete with (drown out?) the vocals. Worst Song: Hey Ladies. Screeching "hey ladies" is lyrically too on-point to match the rest of the vibe here. Overall: For me, the Beastie Boys are so fucking annoying. There is no music more obnoxious than a Beastie Boys album. All their songs sound basically the same: a group of the worst men you know trying to simultaneously shout shit at you using only their nasal cavities will the most attention-deficit among them plays with a radio DJ's soundboard. At least it's playful, and sometimes the beats are enjoyable, because otherwise it's just an assault
I love the Beastie Boys but this is one of my least favorite albums of theirs. Not as much creative flow as some others
I enjoy an instrumental only version so much more
To all the reviewers upset about the reviews calling this a couple of guys shouting their brags at a microphone: Yes, that's exactly what this is, and no, it's not enjoyable. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing
Was that an Eagles sample? Eek. So many samples I wish I was listening to the original songs. The first 1/2 of Car Thief was good I guess.
It is amazing that they continue to sound just as monotone and boring when given 3 years to produce something that outdoes their prior, successful efforts
I know it's a classic, but rap is really not my thing
Not a fan
A reminder of why white people should not rap. The production is cool at random points throughout the album. The voices and the whiny yelling have become very annoying. I think the flow has remained the same meter for the entire album. Rap/rock combo is a cool concept, but not executed to my preference here.
Not my thing
This is borderline. Some cool songs, but it's pretty noisy. I appreciate that it's highly influential and all that, but ultimatelt it's hard to listen to for me.
Empty
Don't really get the love for this.. De La Soul are legendary with sampling. This was shouty and random...
Never my thing
I don’t foresee myself listening to this in the future but you can hear the influence they had on 90’s hip hop and rap at large and that’s pretty cool
Pretty heinous
Not really my thing. I liked some of the sampling and some of the beats but I generally found it a bit busy and I didn’t enjoy their voices. Fav song: Shadrach Least fav: The Sounds of Science
Such great lyrics as "He drinks a lot of liquor but he don't drink piss"... and "Humpty Dumpty was a big fat egg" Think there's a lot of hip hop where the lyricism is insanely impressive. This isn't that. Didn't help that I found their voices annoying too. Favourite song: Shadrach Least: Highway Drifter
Not my bag of fish tank water.
It's Beastie Boys so every song sounds the same. This album actually had a softer sound to the usual Beastie Boys, but at the end of the day all 53 mins of this album felt like one single sound. Boring. 2/5 stars.
Well it was slightly more bearable than their first album, but for me that's not saying a lot. I like the music & rhythms & the imaginative use of samples, but as soon as they open their mouths, it just turns me off.
Samples good Vocals grating and annoying and repetitive
Yep... still don't get it.
Meh, not for me. Beastie Boys are a bit too boisterous for me to enjoy properly.
ok boys that’s enough
Thought I liked Beastie Boys more than I do. The loved the samples and instrumentation but I just found all the vocals grating and obnoxious. A song on occasion seems ok but listening to them for a whole album was too much for me.
Hip hop
Pretty sweet sounds. But the Besties never hit it for me lyrically. I'm more of a gangster rap fan
Like the 80-90s rap flow but to much screaming
just not my thing
it's no License to Ill that's for sure
I'm not going to be one of these boomers that comes on here and bashes every rap album I hear- I actually really like the genre. I even like a lot of the beats on this album, but god damnit are these guys annoying. It's something about the pitch of their voice and the cadence of their flow that makes me want to rip my ears out after a couple of tracks.
4/10…it’s ok. Classic Beastie Boys: the adolescent vulgarity of the first album, a few new rhyme/rhythm devices heading toward later albums, but nothing revolutionary or new.
It was neat to put music to the name, Beastie Boys, but it got old fast. Hush little white boys, but I did like the sampling.
I can't and won't hate on it, I just don't like listening to it
Better than the first BB album and interesting way to make the music.
Each song sounds really similar simple beats that aren’t that interesting. Couldn’t get through this album something about it really annoys me 2/5
Get this man a xanax or something, my ears hurt.
Not my taste of music
I liked this album better than their previous one and in particular the song, Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun. Still too shouty and tough to listen for too long.
Boring
Meh
Old school hip hop/ rap, I can dig the vibes, but the vocals are just too grating to me, sounds whiny at times. Just annoying after a while.
Ikke helt min greie men litt groovy innimellom 2/5
Felt like entering a time warp. Did not hate but a very specific vibe not suited to my mood - would be good for stomping down the street
I like some of their stuff, and really tried with this, but couldn't get into it.
I really struggle to see what they brought to the table from a rap vocal standpoint, besides being white! It’s a miracle they had such good producers on board to carry their tracks along. Great basslines throughout, and some fun “I know that song!” sample moments, like with the appearance of the Get Back riff. Still find their energy a little lacklustre on the microphone, which is probably THE worst piece of criticism for a rapper.
The album is cool and very diverse but I lost the focus at some point.
Ce n’est clairement pas ma came
Other than high planes drifter, not a huge fan. If ever in the mood for adult Aaron Carter vibes…
I had a lot of the same issues with this that I had with Ready to Die (too long, some bangers but a lot of weird filler) but also they're just so cute
I can appreciate the instrumentals and samples but the vocals are not for me. I had to take a break midway through, it was too much for my ears, constant shouting.
Not quite my genre
Cannot stand these guys. I guess it’s influential but it’s just so obnoxious and I’m never in the mood for it.
I liked the beginning beats of all the songs
The Beastie Boys have such a stylized sound that it is very hard to hear their music without it sounding like a parody of themselves, in a bad way. I don't understand the appeal of the yell-rapping, especially doing it over one another, not very musical in my opinion. My favorite parts of this album were hearing all of the samples because it served as a distraction from the musical cacophony that was this record.
I think I cannot rate hip-hop albums. It's fun, there's a bit of hip and hop in it, it's enjoyable.
The production is much better than on Licensed to Ill but I still disliked this album for similar reasons. The biggest reason is that I find the high-pitched guy's voice extremely grating (I think it's Mike D) to the point that it totally kills my enjoyment of the album. I also just generally don't like their back and forth style of rapping. I really liked some of the sampling, in particular using the Beatles' the End on the Sound of Science and also the ominous heavy metal sample on Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun. The funk sample on Car Thief was also excellent.
The bit in 5 second diner when it breaks into a fast country song probably says everything i feel about this group and this album It does nothing for me, and a little annoying. Is it any worse than the other two albums on the list? Dunno, don't really care either. All I know is that to sit through this twice is a task. Just not for me at all Shadrach is fine, so well done. Nothing is as good as Intergalactic. It's just not for me. There was a lot more interesting things going on in the genre at the time It's bad when the parody of the thing is better than the thing The last 12 min song is like the end of Abbey Road, if the end of Abbey Road was written by a bad musician
OK, beastie boys as beastie boys. Not exactly my bag
this white guy screaming type hip hop is not really my thing
Aside from the awesome samples used here (shoutout to The Beatles), the vocals are significantly lacking and take me out of the moment.
so many lines are cringy, but the music is clear and undeniably clever
Good but little bit boring. Nice intro have a "Stop That Train" from the namesake song from Clint Eastwood & General Saint.
Sounds like it would be played in a modern day street market in NYC. Not my vibe per se. Feel like I would have to do a lot of reading to fully digest the album.
Juvenile, grating, and I just don't enjoy the beastie boys triple-headed rap-every-other-word thing I'm glad they had more fun recording this than I had listening
From what I know of the Beastie Boys, I was prepared to hate this album, but I get why people like this. I don't know who the Dust Brothers are, but they do good work. I still don't like the group. The album as a whole isn't entirely unlistenable, and that's really the highest praise I can give.
Some decent beats but WHAT are these lyrics
Not for me
Rating - 2.8/5 . > Let me preface this by saying I DIDNT FINISH THE ALBUM. Dont get me wrong, beastie boys were a staple back in the day but i absolutely very much dislike the way they sound. I listened to like. 3 songs. And they all sounded the same. I just dont think i would ever listen to this willingly. I like the instrumental tho its sooooo late 80s early 90s. Thumbs up: couldnt even tell ya cus i barely listened to it WOOPS.
Bonus point for good sampling
Interesting album.
The group gets high marks for their clever and sometimes funny lyrics. Almost every track contains a sample of older music; I recognized Curtis Mayfield, the Beatles, and the Isley brothers in here. Otherwise, this is just more hip hop in my opinion.
Sometimes described as "the Sgt. Pepper of hip-hop", eh? Probably by Jim Shearer, former host of the MTV2 Rock Countdown! The main Beastie Boys association I have is "that man sure loves the Beastie Boys". For me, they're kind of nostalgic, I guess, but that feeling only sustains me for a few minutes, and this album is much longer than a few minutes. Not really my thing, Jim Shearers aside. Lotta egg talk. Highlights: the phrase "bald feet".
The Beastie Boys were a group I thought were cool back in the ‘90s, but as the years go by, their appeal has worn off, and at this point, they just kind of get annoying. That’s probably a good sign that their music didn’t really stand the test of time, or at least not for me. As for this album, this was one I never got around to back then, so a lot of these tracks are new to me. But honestly, no matter which Beastie Boys album you’re listening to, they always pretty much sound the same.
As soon as a saw the Beasty Boys, I rolled my eyes. I find them obnoxious and overrated. That being said, knowing what I was getting into, the beginning does not seem nearly as bad as I thought it would. It's typical Beasty Boys stuff but it helps that their popular songs aren't in this album so don't have any experience with these songs. Some good beats but overall I feel a little gross listening to it. Not exactly sure why, but the lyrics feel immature and no matter the song, the rhythm of the lyrics is the exact same. Da-da-da- ba ba ba- (insert background vocals) repeat. Tolerable but definitely won't be on the regular rotation. My perspective on this group is a little improved, but not by much. I'm torn between giving it a 2 or 3, but given the fact that I probably won't listen to it again minus maybe two songs im adding to my 'history of music playlist' Ill give it a 2.
No me resultan interesantes.
I much prefer their rap rock sound over this. There were some good samples, but some annoying ones as well.
Beastie Boys were always meh to me, I'd probably rate a greatest hits album higher, but when you have to wade through the crap tracks for a couple gems it just ain't worth the time.
I don’t like the beastie boys
It all blended into one song for me.
Millie asked me to turn it off!
While Woody Harrelson helped prove that white men can in fact jump. The beastie boys only prove that white men from Brooklyn can maybe rap. One of a kind (repetitive) sound combining hip-hop with creative yet sometimes corny lyrics and a whiny sound that works but starts to sound identical throughout a full album. Head bopped for most of the album start to finish but that has more to do with the beats than the lyrics themselves. The ironic country riff on 5-piece chicken dinner is a hilarious way to start the B-side of this record and sums up with how this group treated music. Heard Before: none (probably a few but no clue) Favorite: Egg Man and Johnny Ryall Least Favorite: To all the girls Sleeper: BBoy: A year and a day
The album is okay here and there. Some good sampling. However, beastie boys have always sounded like a group of friends that are constantly interrupting each other and laughing at themselves. A group of friends that you don't hate to run into, but just weren't really in the mood to see at most moments. A full album didn't change that feeling
Too much for me. I think I’ll stick with the favorites
Didn't get into it
Meh
I guess I don't like the Beasty Boys. It's just too much
Won’t be confusing these guys with The Beach Boys again! Not my preferred sound, but it was expanding.
i like some of the sounds and beats, but i really don’t like listening to hip/hop. i gave this a go because not every song is marked explicit. i did enjoy the jump from “hey ladies”, to a short country song, to the rock sound of “looking down the barrel of a gun” 😆 i do not enjoy the shouty vocals, even if that is their trademark.
Again, like with Run DMC, this is not my type of music. These are some rather basic words that form an introductory opinion about hip hop and Beasty Boys. I have read that this album, these tracks lack direction, not as a negative, meaning that they failed to obtain it, but rather that they didn’t try to, instead opting for the flow and lyric wit. I can accept its importance in the early hip hop days and the umf behind the change of style between their first and second album, but I cannot recognise it. I have to state that my type of music is more of a storyline. I find it easier to spot the purpose that way, call me lazy. Having said that, this is again not my cup of tea twice as much cause they do not try to have a purpose full storybuilding, this is actually senseless rhyming and I hate that. This is my general problem with hip hop. It always feels like flow over everything. This takes it one step further with the whole album laking a general direction, it is a negative for me even though, again, I can accept that this is what they were going for. It feels like an album meant to be sampled, to be a basis for something that will come later. This is fitting for its era. I cannot call its lyrics witful and articulate. I refuse to believe that the standart should be that low. Everything sounds like the type of music that you make from home, by a bunch of new-in-the-scene artists that have not yet earned the right to be called artists. LACKLUSTER One thing that I have to admit, though, is that the little that they try to do in rhyming, it is flowless. The album, production wise, is not too bad and I can hear the hours put behind the sampling and piecing together part. I just do not think the end product is that great.
Not their fault but too much BB. If we were on better terms I would've given this a more charitable listen. Even tho they evolved their sound, at their core BB is unserious music made by/for white boys who want to jump on couches and party. I suspect my toddler will love these tracks and that's probably where they belong
I think that’s enough beastie boys for now.
Hahaha, im quite surprised that we have had 3 BB albums so far. I made it through the entire album. I wouldnt put this above the other two One song that I thought was good was Looking Down The Barrel (Mississippi Queen sample?). Other than that, this album wasnt for me
