Reviews (page 10 of 13)
The more Beastie Boys we listen to, the less I enjoy it. I did really like that multi-part song at the end though because I liked the variety. But I'm just sick of this group.
Fun! Beastie boys rock
Strongly agree with the all caps review
Seminal album from the Boyz. has a few real surprises. Glad I took a listen.
Not my kind of music but I was entertained. Songs had a good start but the songs droned on.
Not exactly my bag but I remember a lot if these from when I was a kid.
loved the samples
Hip hop yoo
Pretty fun album. Always felt most of the Beastie Boys material sounds like a parody of hip-hop so not my fave. Highlight here is the Dust Bros mixing/production. Mike D is kind of annoying and I think I would like this better without the BBoys. Major influence on 2 Skinnee J's
Solid album, was not really aware of this one before. Great sampling and beats, definitely ahead of its time.
I like the beastie boys but listening to an entire album of theirs is a bit much.
Pretty fun listen

A great album to get dressed to after a night of poor sleep. Not so good when trying to meditate. I liked the first track best and would happily have listened to more like this. The rest I found a bit high-energy, but that's more a reflection on my current mood than the music of the Beastie Boys. I particularly enjoyed reading the lyrics whilst listening, wondering what would come next. Overall, not bad, will probably listen again some time.
Wanted to like this one a lot more than I did, but it wasn’t a bad experience at all!!! It feels like the kind of album that I would love to hear at a house party rather than something for dedicated listening. The music and the sampling are fantastic, and I know the lyrics are meant to be nonsense but… I’m past the point where I go out of my way to seek teenage shouting about made up gangster encounters and wild nights out. Put this stuff at a party though and you’ve got me hooked.
Fun early Beastie.
BBs walked so Lonely Island could run.
hmm... mixed bag. the songs themselves were kind of similar but i did enjoy the vibe. looking down the barrel of a gun especially good though. their voices are kinda of high pitched and annoying but ... i think I'll give bonus points cause i was kinda grooving 3/5
Love the sampling but too much shouting for my taste
Banger of an album. Interesting dichotomy between the late 80s rap feel of this album and Snoop's 'Doggystyle'
Decent album. There are some random sporadic elements to this that don’t always work and some of the songs are a little flat. But, enjoyed the delivery from the group and some of the songs are pretty good. 3/5 Might listen again
I felt like I was listening to the same song for the entire album
Beastie boys are a unique group and I can respect the influence they had on the genre (not at first) but there were only a handful of songs I enjoyed. Maybe if I listened again I would rate higher, but for now I give it a 3.
Without the Beastie Boys, there's no Slim Shady, RATM, Limp Bizkit
not bad
It's OK
Yeah it was interesting. A lot of it felt fun to listen to, but wasn't really big on it.
Disappointing how the songs don’t transition cleanly from one to the next. Funky grooves will keep you interested, but doesn’t blend well with their hip hop style.
I really wanted to give it a 4. It's so good and it's a classic for a reason.
Crude, brash, immature, and sometimes a lot of fun. More of my favorite Beastie Boys songs come from “Licensed to Ill” but there’s some wild stuff here. Loved the example of pioneering crate digging/sample work, and fun to learn that after producing this sample-heavy album, the Dust Brothers took what they learned, spun it in another direction, and produced Beck’s fantastically random “Odelay” album. I just can’t get over the raucously hedonistic nasal wail of Ad-Rock and how all three practically alternate words in a single sentence. This album is all over the place lyrically and musically, but ends up showing a crazed tapestry of early experimental hip hop and exploration of the sample genre. Misogynistic and sexist lyrics and jokes don’t sit well here or anywhere, and gratefully the Beastie Boys grew up a bit and publicly apologized for their attitudes later on. Fun but possibly not my favorite from the Beastie Boys, it was good to listen to this all the way through because it shows up on greatest lists all of the time. Three stars here.
I love the Beasties and this album is a classic, but I prefer the boys a little older and wiser. Starts really strong but begins to drag long before the 12 minute suite of leftovers that close the album.
Oh, mein Urteil scheint schwankt anscheinend: morgens fand ich gar nicht gut, nachmittags konnte ich es durchhören
Shake Your Rump still the best track. 3/5
Not my vibe at the moment at all. Good prods and original ambiance. Annoying voices. Probably interesting to have a look at why it is considered to be an important album and why it had a big impact.
I like some songs and I’ve owned this album in the past, but I can’t really see myself listening to it. I may listen a couple tracks, but even a low probability of that unless they come up on random. I know it’s a classic.
Det er sgu meget sjovt! Relativt rodet og ikke helt min stil.. Det bliver lidt meget af det samme for min smag.
Chilled out men gillar deras första mer
A classic? Undeniably. The beats? Amazing. To my ears, the vocal delivery of all 3 Beastie Boys? Still grating.
I wanted to like it and it wasn’t bad, but no song really grabbed me
My first time listening to a full beastie boys album and I didn't realize their style was so varied! This was fun, but no song blew me away.
Top top sampling, some super funky beats but just feels a little disjointed at times. Some songs will have some really excellent sections of beastie boys bars but feeling a little incongruent with the rest of the song. Excellent production, great sampling and some nice scratching but ultimately only 3 or so songs really did it for me.
Great beats! Wouldn't want to listen to a whole album ... Good in moderation. High energy.
3.5
3.5 it was pretty good. The songs that had more instruments than just drums were much better. The ones that didn’t felt very empty
It had nice flow, but overall it’s kinda not my thing
Good listen, a bit too much of a good thing at times. I enjoyed the out-of-the-box walls of samples but it felt a bit overstimulating and busy at times. The good stuff was very good though. Also, points to the boys for knowing so much about Japanese baseball. Top tracks: Shake Your Rump, Egg Man, Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun, Car Thief, Shadrach
Again something that I can only appreciate in a historical context. Just not for me, sadly.
Their sampling is outstanding and I could listen to the instrumentals if they offered those on an album forever. I'm not a fan of their lyrics or their voices. They are a little grating and the lyrics sound cheesy.
I love their songs seperately, but listening to the entire album is A LOT
beastie boys sounded interesting
Scott-Stapp-Frat-Rap-Midwest-Boo-Bap. I won't ever say I don't like them, just didn't age great. White dudes yelling over really good samples.
Haven't heard much of the Beastie Boys before. It is easy to see how they influenced a lot of artists and groups that came after them. From the Rock/Hip-hop instrumentation, sampling or their flow patterns. The instrumentation on this album is varied and unique. Lots of cool bass lines and strange instrumentation. The lyrics are sometimes clever and sometimes dumb, but they are always performed with enthusiasm. I think I would have enjoyed this album a bit more if it was a little shorter, but even in saying that there is a lot to like here.
I have an ex that mostly ruined this album for me, along with License to Ill, by overplaying the hits from them when we were together. This one I tolerate more than License, but both Hey Ladies and Brass Monkey have some negative emotional attachment for me. I've come to enjoy the B. Boys later albums more than the early ones, so at least she didn't ruin them completely for me, but I'd much rather listen to Ill Communication or To the 5 Boroughs. These albums just sound so much more juvenile than their later work.
Awesome sampling work, but the vocals are hardly intelligible. Without the vocals to hold your attention, it starts to feel monotonous after a bit.
Fun and cute but not my thing
Great fun listening to tracks and picking out the samples. Got a shock when the opening drum fill from Moby Dick kicked in (it’s my phone’s ringtone).
a vlassik album
Not my style...
It was cute when they all rapped together Edit -- I watched a video of the samples that they used and it's quite impressive, but that didn't make it any more enjoyable to listen to again.
This one is hard to rate for me. Fantastic production, some of the best I’ve heard in a while, but I really dislike the way the beastie boys rap- the weird shout rapping just doesn’t do it for me. It ruins some of the songs that could be great if the rapping was at least bearable. 6.5/10
Great background music track.
Hadn't heard the whole album before, but knew some of the hits
Some pretty cool stuff going on. Also lots of shouting.
Time for another artist to join the "I've gotten 2 albums from them for this project" club. This time, the Beastie Boys are back with their second album, Paul's Boutique. This one's okay. The writing could be better, but it's not that bad and could've aged worse. The rapping itself is still something that I'm not huge on, but it's not ear-grating either and I can see why it has its fans. The album goes on for quite a bit, but it doesn't drag too much. However, this album is not on the list for its sheer quality or anything (at least I don't think it is). No, this album is on here, and deservedly so, for technical reasons. This album is just a master class in the power of sampling. Most of the instrumentals on this album is sampling. One could say that this album is unoriginal as a result. However, I see this album for the technical accomplishment that it is. The sampling all works quite well, and this album was a sort of pioneer in that regard. Overall, while I think I liked Ill Communication more, Paul's Boutique certainly isn't bad. High 3/5.
A classic. For me, it gets a bit tiring after a while though.
Listened to this for the /mu/ list a while back. It was fine, and definitely better than the first album. 3/5
I’ve never given them a fair listen past their classic radio hits. I love storytelling in music, but I still find them a bit of a one trick pony. I respect what they do like I do the Beatles. Still a solid album and a cool start.
Not my music
Everytime we get a beastie boys album im always gutted and then I listen and am pleasantly surprised. idk why i have this internalized beastie boys hate in me, THEYRE GOOD. Unfortunately, though on this album, the low lights are pretty low.
Not my favorite beastie album. Egg man was funny.
C'était bien, pas forcément ce que j'écoute. J'ai aimé, mais je vais surement pas y revenir.
Not quite as good as Licensed to Ill but they seem pretty comparable
The production is pretty expansive and creative, though a lot of the songs themselves feel like afterthoughts for the simple joy of snipping together beats. Still more or less enjoyed it. Best song: B-Boy Bouillabaisse medley
I was vibing to it, but after a while it all kind of sounded the same.
Listening to an entire Beastie Boys album is a bit exhausting because their singing/rapping all sounds very similar (like shouting). There is a good variety of samples/beats on the album, and most songs are enjoyable enough on their own but it gets old. Favorite track: Shake Your Rump
Its fine I guess, still not really the biggest fan of hip hop though
Still not
As much as I think I like the Beasties, this all sounds like the same stuff from track to track, album to album. Intergalactic is the only song that really stands out from the last 20 years or so. It's not bad, but I just get bored of it. I'm not the type of person that really listens to lyrics, especially when they're this fast.
Strong 3 I think!
ok
I'm learning that I might not like hip-hop. Don't get me wrong, this is very good. But I just don't think it's my preferred flavor of music.
Might be good, but I didn’t really have time to get into it.
Dang fun
Surprisingly meh for Beastie Boys.
This album felt pretty long. And I would say it was decent. I’m kinda torn between a three and a four for it. I like the Beastie Boys, but i found myself getting tired of their musical style pretty fast. Like good in small doses kind of thing. Too much of it was tiring. When I did pay attention to the lyrics I could usually appreciate the lyricism. Sometimes I thought they were kinda dumb but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Meh: the second time I have listened to the Beastie Boys and the shouty New York rap is getting a bit much at this point. They had some solid sampling and lyrics which flowed very well but it wasn't all to my taste. Just feel it's gotten a bit too familiar and almost boring. Nothing against the impact they've had but just not for me.
The samples are sick but the bars are meh. Lots of shouting. Gets aggravating after a whole.
empieza mal la segunda remonta muchísimo mola pero las letras 0
When listening to the beastie boys, I have to be in the right mood to be able to listen to this type of music. Some of the songs were OK, honestly, it’s still a great album, but it’s just not my style, I wish there were some slower songs on it.
Know some by Beastie Boys, cant say I was ever a huge fan. This album is definitely different though, I like it. Always have loved their raw approach to rap, this whole album sounds like they all chilling together rapping into the same mic live. Although they have this cool raw approach, their vocals can become tiresome and almost annoying at times. Also love their beats, they're all pretty dope. 5 piece chicken dinner is a funny addition to this album Personal Favorites: What Comes around, Egg man
my second beastie boys experience, and somehow i managed to get their first two albums in chronological order. i liked this one a bit better than their debut, i felt like it felt less like an obnoxious party and more refined. i thought the beats were better and more clever. their rapping still felt a bit... raucous, we'll say, but that's sort of the point there. but yeah, overall, i felt like i enjoyed my time with this one.
Not my favorite Beastie Boys
3.5/5
I'm much more into the backing tracks here than the vocals or the lyrics. The whole thing feels like a mixtape in a cool way, but so many of the songs have really juvenile or gross themes. Fun at times, but overall not all that memorable for me.
Day 7,614 without sex. I suppose it's one of those cases where my inability to comprehend English is a buff. This sounds completely fine to me.
it's a fun album but I like licensed to ill better and
A huge amount of energy, some really fun samples thrown into the mix, and the beats are chunky. Yet despite the 'feelgood' vibe that prevails, it's yet another rap album that slips from 'great' to 'fine' through a lack of variety. The Beastie Boys remain iconic but a whole album of their sing-song, see-saw delivery can be a little wearying.
ok
The number of listens on spotify are definitely telling of the song's quality. Slow songs are too slow. Beats are cool but not enough variation in the "melody" from the MCs. Every song sounds just about the same, with the most famous ones showing some more personality. B-Boy Bouibaisse sounds more like small samples that didn't evolve into full songs.
The production on this CARRIES hard. It’s tough listening to the Beastie Boys rap for an hour.
I really like the vocals and the delivery. The samples are mind-boggily well executed. Even though it's not my style of music I can see the art and dedication to the craft (over 8 hours worth of songs were sampled!). Hey Ladies and Shake Your Rump were standouts for me.
I usually would enjoy hip hop more i guess but i think the shout rap kinda took me out of it
It's pretty good, but I don't get why this is considered peak Beastie Boys.
Pretty, pretty, pretty good
Good instrumentals
Sounds like Beastie Boys
ngl they had me in the first half The first few tracks I wasn`t really feeling the whole record, the beats, this old school energetic, shouting type of rap - it just didn't vibe for. However after a few tracks I opened up to their style. The last track is an absolute jam by the way and I was already digging it twice in a row. Will definitely be coming back to this album, at least to check out, if I feel differently about the first few tracks. Although I guess for me it will probably never reach the status of an essential hip-hop album, it has for so many other people.
There's a level of angst required for the beastie boys that I do not possess.
Samples eram interessantes, e era algo uplifting, mas um bocado esquecível honestamente
Is it rock? Is it rap? Beats and instrumentals are awesome - sampling is so cool and its really fun recognising random little bits taken from other songs (like Sounds of science with the guitar from The End - Beatles). Reminds me of an early version of Death Grip's 'Exmilitary.' Vocals vary from kinda fun (Hey Ladies) to annoying af (the dude with the real high voice), really hold the album back (wish someone like DOOM, Mos Def or Nas were rapping over it). Music for driving around downtown NYC in a beaten up car wearing homeless person clothes. PS this would sound very good stoned High Plains Drifter and the Sounds of science are some phat tunes.
I think "Paul's Boutique" might be the starkest example so far in the 1001 of tastes changing as we grow up. "Paul's Boutique" was a bit too early for me. My first Beastie Boys exposure was "Ill Communication," and I worked a bit backwards from there. I definitely dug it as a teenager. I didn't keep up with them too tightly, and don't think I listened much to "Hello Nasty." But I loved "To The 5 Boroughs" as a young adult. Going back to "Paul's Boutique," I was struck by the in-your-face brashness and immaturity. But that was the Beastie Boys, right? I was just in a better place to receive it when I was younger. I still think early Beastie Boys has a special place in the history of hip hop, and parts of it are still enjoyable. They always were incredibly clever, and this is probably one of the best representations of the 80s style of hip hop which could too often be slow and corny. But the constant yelling and childishness throughout is too much of a turnoff for me now. We'll eventually get to "Ill Communication," but in the meantime I went back to "To The 5 Boroughs," and I'm happy to say I liked it much better. They toned down what needed to be toned down, while still keeping the bite and the wit, and the beats were improved, along with guest spots that helped the flow and broke up the monotony of the Boys' voices. Musically only a ⭐️⭐️ for me now, though "To The 5 Boroughs" is still at least a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Looking forward to revisiting "Ill Communication," and not so much looking forward to "License to Ill."
Not for me, still good.
Liked the experimentation they did with some of the songs but they were kinda hit or miss. Some were forgettable, some were boring and a few stood out like egg man, Johnny Ryall and the sounds of science. The b-boy bouillabaisse tracks were boring for the most part.
Good rhythms and samples on this album, it sounds 'cool', though I don't like much of the lyrics and that many times there are a lot of shouting-rapping (I don't know how to call this). Overall I appreciate the culture impact it had, but it isn't my cup of tea.
While I'm not big fan of this genre, I've tended to enjoy the Beastie Boys more than I thought I would. This is a solid album with some varied sounds. "Hey Ladies" is a stand out for me, as is "The Sounds of Science".
Damn, this is unique. I read somewhere that this is a cocktail of sounds. Apt description. The vocals aren't my favorite, but the sounds are really good.
Viehättävä soundi - joviaalia rääkymistä. Noin puolivälin kohdilla levy löytää kovemman vaihteen ja menee aika saatanan tiukaksi.
Fun but I think they are better in smaller doses, it gets a bit much after a while. No songs I knew but some I've added into playlists.
Not bad, but all Beastie Boys songs sound the same
Listening to an entire Beastie Boys album in a row made me appreciate the differences in their songs. I really enjoyed this but I don't know when I'll next listen to them for fun.
Loling @ first song much better on the second listen The sound of science was quite good. B-Boy bouillabaisse also good Seems I like the uptempo tracks better than the boom-bap 3.5/5
Tough one to rate because while I appreciate their dedication to their style, I find it so hard to like these guys. I get it. The sound is unique and I can see why they're iconic. I get that part. I do. It's just not for me. The songs and style are the same and irretrievably consistent throughout the album which solidifies them, but also places them into this box where you either love them or you hate them, and well, I don't love it. Every line is like, "something something something BAM, and then another word and something BAM, and everything something, something, BAM, extra style and something BAM" - the pattern gets so tiring. The voice, the beats. I can't listen very long. If you've heard two songs by Beastie Boys, you've heard them all.
A success in production, but on the whole really not for me: The Beastie Boys' delivery has always set my teeth on edge, and I find it hard to look past, no matter how good the lyrics are. The achievement here is the production, made at a time when the writing was on the wall for the wild west of sampling. Same producers as Odelay!
Beastie Boys have their style. And that's it. I dig it, but it's not very groundbreaking.
Sounds good but you get tired quite quickly because all songs are really alike. When i heard nice woman’s voice in the beginning of “Shadrach” song, i thought there will be something different and interesting but no, the same shouting… But the album is still nice!
p613. 1989. 3 stars. White boy hip/hop/rap, so wrong audience. Having said that... actually quite enjoyed it. Not sure I'd revisit though.
Not my thing
A pretty impressive treasure trove of sampling and production. Very polished and innovative. It is the signature Beastie style, strong lyrics and witty rhymes. I did like the heavier "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" the most, but I get a bit tired of their nasally voicing.
I might have liked this better in my teen years. It's fine.
Angsty
Egg Man is definitely one of my favorite Beastie Boys songs ever. What a jam. Sampledelia is a genre I don't know if I've seen before. Pretty fun looking at the samples and trying to pick them out of the songs. Just kidding 5-Piece Chicken Dinner is my actual favorite Beastie Boys song. Looking Down the Barrell of a Gun is pretty hype. Heard the beginning of Sublime's cover of Scarlet Begonias in Shadrach and realized that that's also a sample of a James Brown tune. TIL. There are a few standout songs by them but the Beastie Boys just never scratched that itch for me. Very interesting with the sampledelia though and can see how influential this was.
Eclectic
Couple tracks had the real cool brooklyn chill electric piano tune to it that I like. Again, Beastie boys is a group I can only relate to in that no sleep till brooklyn would be blasted at 7am at Camp Ockanickon on the speakers every morning. I liked them like every other kid did, but only knew them for their singular hits. This album was definitely playing more into the strengths of the trio, the in your face rap style with good beats. If you're hungry for a large helping of what makes beastie boys iconic, this album is a good second serving.
Less headache inducing than Licence to Ill, at least. It's fine.
I can never decide if I like the beastie boys or if they’re annoying.
After Licensed to Ill I found much of the Beastie Boy music hit or miss for me. First time listening to this album and I am very surprised how much I enjoyed listening. Maybe it was one of the 105 songs sampled? I knew after the first listen there were a number of samples I recognized, but would have never guessed in the 100's. Some of the fun of this album was checking out all the songs sampled, detailed on the wiki page. Pretty incredible list and wide ranging genres. My two favorites are High Plains Drifter and Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun. High Plains sampled Those Shoes by the Eagles. Near the top of the list of my favorite Eagle tunes. Anyway, enjoyed pretty much most of this album from start to finish. Hell, I can see myself catching a nice cool buzz and trying to pick out all the sampled tunes. While this album doesn't reach the heights of License to Ill, I did find this to be a fun, entertaining album with some great sounds. Not sure I can give this a 4, but definitely at least a 3.5 for me. I'm going to score a 3, but probably closer to a 4 than a 3. 3.5
For sure, there's an insane work of sampling behind this, but I feel a lack of offering something engaging and catchy to the listener. Great work, tho.
Not the best Beastie Boys on the list. But it does solidify the genre of white boys playing at hip hop, laying on snarky cynicism that doesn't really honour hip hop as a genre, but appeals to high brow people who can't relate to the real deal.
The sampling is interesting, but I prefer license to ill
2.5
Paul's Boutique has quite the distinctive sound of the Beastie Boys, although I wouldn't go so far as some have in describing it as the "Sgt. Pepper of hip-hop". It's fill of energy and life, with what would have been quite a fresh take on hip-hop at the time as well - even so far as the black hip-hop community loving the take on new beats. Although it's not to my preference, I can appreciate the way the Beastie Boys have curated this album. Best: Hey Ladies Worst: High Plains Drifter
I'll be honest, "Sabotage" is one of my favourite song of all time. The amount of energy it brings is almost unparalleled. I always thought that I should be a big fan of the band, but somehow any other song I listened to sounds mediocre at best. And this is the case with "Paul's Boutique". A lot of great beats, but the rap style of Beastie Boys is so draining, I just end up hating this band after few songs. It's better for all parties to just move on and leave an average rating, before someone (me) will have a mental breakdown.
Have always been put off the Beastie Boys by the diabolical whiny, yelpy vocals. Sampling, song writing and lyrics are top drawer though.
It was a good listen. There were some great songs and some okay-ish songs.
It’s aight
Wow! Great follow to License to Ill.
This was pretty good in my opinion. Honestly I've always been quite a fan of the aggressive, shouted rapping style the Beastie Boys had going on. However, this album is upwards of 50 minutes and that shouty rapping does grow old after a while. It's another one of those albums that's best suited for a mixtape. As well as that, I think it pales in comparison to some of the other albums in their catalogue. It's good but not their best. Favourite: Shake Your Rump
very average, it is nice but very repetitive
3,5 because it is better than other 3s. Sounds like Eminem but worse. I think it was something absolutely fresh at latest 80s. But I need something more. Can't listen this a lot.
Beastie Boysien tyyli on kyllä tunnisettavaa. Vaikka kappaleet oli toki erilaisia niin tää tyyli oli niin vahva että jotenkin kappaleet saattoi kuullostaa vähän samalta. Ainakin tämmöisessä väsyneessä tilassa
It’s alright.
While I do think it's pretty influential it's not my particular preference of hip hop. The samples are really incredible in some areas, but the shouting gets tiresome and seems to cover up their lack of versatility in delivering lyrics.
Men asså lite white boy 90-tals hiphop är ju alltid lite nice.
Man hör att de är de, tänkte på Sabotage typ hela tiden.
Didn't really enjoy the album, but I'll recheck it at later date to see if my opinion changes
i get that it’s influential and it’s a cool record but honestly it doesn’t do much for me. they did a good job and they have a genuine attitude but i just don’t care for the shoutyness. and the flows all kinda sound samey. whatever.
Not bad. Different for the beastie boys I know and love
my third beastie boys album as part of this project. paul's boutique was part of their sample phase. their previous licensed to ill sampled as well, but i felt a larger range of their chosen samples here. of what i caught, they used more rock music, but there's still a touch of disco and country to be found, too. a little easter egg was to hear the drum intro for alice cooper's "it's hot tonight" on "what comes around"! that being said, i only thought this was just an okay beastie boys album. i do enjoy their more original work better, for what it's worth. the beastie boys brought their usual energy, which made the album pass by easily. a pleasant 3.
It's interesting to me that this album's main goal was to deviate itself from a perception that was established on their previous album, "License to Ill", when probably most casual fans would agree that "License" is the Beastie Boys at their best. This album was a bit more Beastie Boys than I typically go for. Most of the tracks didn't really resonate me. Surprisingly, my favorite part of the album was the B-Boy Bouillabaisse suite at the end of the album. On an album where the band was attempting to differentiate themselves from their previous work, this was the portion that felt like it had the most derivation. I will say, most sampledelia usually bores me, but these guys at least kept me baseline entertained. Not my favorite of theirs, but not bad.
I think their next 2 albums are better, but this was a huge step forward from Licenced to Ill. It's funky and it has enough variation. I don't like all the songs, but there's definitely some good ones on this record. They shout too much. I'm not an expert on hip hop. I don't know how this compares to other hip hop from the same time. To me it sounds somewhere in the middle between Dela Soul and Public Enemy, but that's just me. Favorite song: Eggman
I don't like the Beastie Boys at all but this album was pretty good. I especially liked Hello Brooklyn
Don't know how I've not heard this one yet.
pretty fun as the samples it's made from are unbeatable. the one note whine, whine, whine whine (together) SHOUT delivery is tedious as ever but can mostly be ignored. shame there isn't a vocal-free version
Good beats, but not a huge fan of the raps.
I preferred this to Ill Communication; the sense of playfulness I thought was lacking in that album is more evident here. Arguably too evident actually... those vocals do start to grate after a while. The intricate patchwork of samples is cool, and this was clearly a landmark release as a result, but there's nothing on it that I really loved.
PUNK.
I’m not a big hip hop fan, but I can see why this album was dubbed the Sgt. Pepper of hip hop. Still not my favorite thing to listen to, but I’ll give it 3 stars for the effort.
It's pretty upbeat and funky. I'm liking the beats and sampling going on. Overall I liked it.
Contextually this is amazing but to listen to now I prefer their later stuff
Fun and high energy, but the Beastie Boys' style is too repetitive and wears thin quickly.
Maybe even a 4 if not for the yelling...
Sheeesh 2 of my last 4 albums have been Beastie Boy albums. In my Licensed to Ill review I said I just never GOT the Beastie Boys. Maybe I get them slightly more now 3 stars
Did they want to be the hip hop Beatles? With B-boy Bouillabaisse a nod to Abbey Road. They have at least a couple of albums better than this one.
Rough but clean. 1989s finest, but rap has been power crept since then.
My previous experience with the Beasty Boys led me to believe this album would sound exactly like it did. Not bad, just not something I would seek out to listen to again.
Een soort concept-hiphop album, bonanza aan popreferences en 80's events. Sterk vergelijkbare nummers met enkele uitschieters. - leukste nummer: Johnny Ryall 5-piece chicken dinner is "noemenswaardig"
While this was funny and the plunderphonics elements of it were interesting, I will not really come back to i, mostly because I'm not that much a rap fan and that their voice is pretty annoying haha. 6,9/10
I liked Shake Your Rump, and the cowbell in Hey Ladies is just a classic. Not the biggest Beastie Boys fan, I've never quite got what the appeal is but I might be out of the loop.
Love the sampling, hate the shouting.
Classic Beastie Boys. they seem like they were having fun. At some point in time every song sounds the same.
Probably the best of the early rap albums.
Vocals can be a bit grating at times, but the instrumentals are top-notch and it has a good energy throughout.
Not terrible but If I'd actively put on some music it wouldn't be this
Yea kickit
interesting hip-hop kind of album but the lyrics...
Great but not good for me
I've never really given the Beastie Boys a fair shake. Mainly because I'm not super into hip hop. I found myself enjoying it as each track went by.
While I respect this and what it meant to the progression of hip-hop, pre Wu-Tang rap just isn’t listenable anymore.
1/06/22: Listening to the Beastie Boys rap is like watching Bob Cousy play basketball in the 60s and thinking that I could do it better. Is it because they're white guys in black sports? Is it because both basketball and hip-hop have evolved drastically to something completely? I understand how this was such a revolutionary hip-hop album in 1989. Beasties were able to sample from so many iconic/recognizable artists/songs, however, it just sounds dated today to me. Also, the shout rapping, flow, and cadence becomes pretty repetitive. I respect this album as a historical hip-hop piece but feel no need to revisit this album in the 2020s. I really liked the following songs: -The Sounds of Science -Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun -Car Thief -A Year and a Day -Hello Brooklyn
Idk what to say about beastie boys, they sure had their own thing going
I've expressed here before that I'm not a huge fan of sampling and this album is full of them. I mean it's not terrible, but at the same time, there are times when I'd just rather be listening to the originals.
Reading down a list of samples on this albums and it’s like all my favorite stuff. would rather listen to a playlist of their samples, Bc honestly their voices are so obnoxious it was hard to listen to an hour.
The production on this album is actually incredible. However, vocally it’s a rollercoaster that goes up really high and then just stays there. The Boys know how to have a good time but eventually I want something else other than getting yelled at about girls and pranks and crime.
The 3rd best beastie boys album, a true start to their career, which is still entertaining today
Not the Boys greatest but certainly a landmark in the art of sampling
lyrically pretty good, but their sound is pretty similar across albums so that gets a bit boring
Fun! A bit repetitive!
pretty fun as the samples it's made from are unbeatable. the one note whine, whine, whine whine (together) SHOUT delivery is tedious as ever but can mostly be ignored. shame there isn't a vocal-free version
something's fishy in this bouillabaisse
Have I had licensed to ill here yet? I can't remember. But this doesn't have its charm. It's kinda a hard listen. Some of it is fun but the constant YELLING gets a bit much. Still, HEY LADIEEEEEESSSSS!! 3/5.
Not bad. Hello Nasty is better.
I used to love the Beastie Boys. And this album has a uniqueness that came partly from the time it was made - another where the sample clearance would just be too much work to even attempt now. There are some fun tunes here, but having seen the recent Apple TV-funded ‘TEDTalk’, Beastie Boys Story, it all feels a bit more contrived than it seemed at the time. And a lot of the credit surely has to go to the Dust Brothers? Long story short: I used to think this was great album, but it’s become a little tainted by hindsight.
I'd forgotten that beastie boys is a lot of rap, which was interesting. The length of the album was also longer than expected. Didn't listen very closely so don't think too much of my rating.
Not feeling this one, a bit shouty
egg man - banger sounds of science - extremely goofy looking down the barrel of the gun - yes sampling's really good, but album on it's own is a bit overwhelming. maybe it'll grow on me over time, but so far i'm indifferent towards it
Samples were top notch, like arguably one of the best out there, vocals really detract from the product.
this album is pretty symbolic of my general feelings about the beastie boys — excellent production and technical skills, ruined by bad flows and lyrics. rating it a 3, and i think that’s about as high as i could go on a beastie boys album.
No tengo ni idea del género pero me parecieron insoportables
Decent album, but not their best by a long way.
This is weird timing. I listened to this one just a few days ago. Great album, but not my favorite Beastie Boys record.
Meh. It's not bad, I just don't like it that much. It also kind of all sounds the same.
Phenomanal sampling / beat making . Not fond of the grating shouting/yelling rap that also sounds recorded poorly. It's an ear ache and a disservice to the other work. Lyrically good with some strange moments. I think I prefer Ill Communication but this hits 3/5 as well.
A bit too much shouting going on there.
It’s fine, they unfortunately paved the way for Macklemore
Love the beastie boys!! I didn’t really get the chance to listen to this album, but I’ve heard a couple songs from it and love it! This will be a rating of the beastie boys overall. My rating: 7/10
Better than I thought, still Beastie Boys
Ça s’écoute bien. J’aime les beats. Mais ça me laisse plutôt indifférente.
I loved the sampling used, their voices were overbearing as fuck though.
There were a lot of tracks I like off of this. Some really neat sounds and definitely need to revisit. At the same time, there were some kind annoying sections as well that I don't want to hear again. Could get very 'winy.' Certainly a classic. I thinking a light 6 personally.
Cool hor!
Sonic hiphopi sound, better than the one before.
Ok
As E said, "Fun surprises and sounds throughout." I cant put it much better than that. I was 7 when this came out and I dont think I even heard a Beasties song until I was in high school. What a career they had! Egg Man is my fav WTF song. High Plains Drifter was not my jam. Hey Ladies is the obvious stand out...shit kicks!
Humpty Dumpty was a big fat egg. Shouty. Funky. Samples.
me and the beastie boys have not gotten along in the past because they just annoy me. maybe i just hate no sleep till brooklyn, just the yelling annoys me. it's been okay so far, tolerable. maybe it's their high pitched voices, it's whiny. their use of samples and different sounds is interesting. i do like how playful they are and have fun with the tracks. i didn't hate it as much as i thought i would. 3
Some good songs, some meh songs. "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" especially was just a massive waste of time. "Looking Down The Barrel Of a Gun" was probably my favorite song, although it was really scary hearing these white boys rhyming with the words "bigger" and "trigger". Second half of that science song had some cool energy as well.
Interesting use of music clips from other artists.
Great funky samples. Still a bit too shouty and unrefined. A touch disjointed, but at least it’s not gangsta rap!
So much better as an album that the previous Beastie Boys one we had, fits together much better and it's much more consistently good throughout the album. I do find them hard work to listen to for more than a couple of tracks at a time though. I think this is the high end of a 3 from me - a couple of good songs (Shake Your Rump and Johnny Ryall my favourites), but I just don't like their style enough to rate it higher than that.
Hyperactive and obnoxious, the Beastie Boys can't rap or focus on anything for more than 30 seconds. While I know the hits, none of them are present on Paul's Boutique and I fail to see why this album is highly fêted.
One of those ones I had to keep coming back to make an opinion. Throughout three listens I wasn't sure if I found it annoying or awesome. Guess it really depends on the mood. I like the transitions on most of these songs, kind of blends together like a prog album. I also appreciate despite using so many famous songs for the beats, you can hardly determine specific songs for the most part. So for respect, its pretty high up there.
I have heard for years how amazing, groundbreaking, influential, and brilliant this album is. And .... I just don't get it. Maybe it's because I'm not really a fan of music made up of samples, and that's what this is. It's fine, and I get why it's on the list, but I have no desire to listen to it again.
Since I'm going through the albums I've missed backwards I haven't listened to License To Ill yet and Hello Nasty is the album I'm most familiar with. I didn't mind this album, the boys have a certain charm. But it's not really something that'll get regular play. Fave: Shake Your Rump
I like the Beastie Boys, but I think only in small doses (though I do love Licensed to Ill). This is just too chaotic, quickly switching between awesome and annoying, often within the same song.
I know they were certainly very impactful on the scene and I’m a fan of some beastie boys songs. This started off ok, but it seemed like a lot of the same, with a lot of shouting.
weak 3, good overall but the beats can wear you down a bit
Had some nice songs, but not the beasties best. Egg man is so good tho 6/10
Was a good listen but not the revelations promised quite.
I had never listened to a whole album of theirs before. I enjoyed it quite a bit
Musically decent but their vocal style really grates after a while.
Not a Beastie Boys fan. Not my style at all. But I tried to listen with an open mind and did find my foot tapping to a few songs. Notably "The Sounds of Science", "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun", "Car Thief". Will I listen again? Not a chance. But I can see the attraction. Not nearly as bad as I expected. C-
This record’s a lot of fun. Has some weaker tracks but much more even overall than Ill Communication
Similar to Licensed to Ill, the Beastie Boys vocals just get grating after a while. The production and sampling on this is great though, which is what prevented me from turning it off halfway through.
This is the second album from the hip-hop group Beastie Boys, and it's regarded as their breakthrough album, even though it sold less than their debut album. The music on this album is hip-hop, but the songs are made up of a lot of samples and instrumental tracks - just like their debut album - but this time the sampling was done by the duo Dust Brothers - which are famous for sampling songs (and who also have their own album on this 1000's list). The Dust Brothers worked with the Beastie Boys on this album by providing club tracks and sampling an insane amount of songs; an amount that wouldn't be financially possible today. 105 total songs had samples taken from them. This album slowly gained sales after release and was not as initially successful as the group's debut album - "License to Ill". However, this album is now certified double platinum. Critics praised the production of the sample-heavy tracks and the amazing rhymes over top of them. This album is a hip-hop masterpiece! The flow of each song and the expertly produced sample beats deserve great praise from every listener. This album has definitely had a lasting effect on the hip-hop genre, although the amount of samples can probably never be attempted again. The last track is a 12 minute epic journey that will have you hanging onto every rhyme and change-up in beat. I recommend everyone to give this classic album a listen!
Важная веха в звучании всех 90-ых. Зачаток рэпкора и ряда смежных жанров. Стоит послушать, чтобы получить понимание эпохи.
Old school hip hop classic. Love the REAL instruments and soul samples….and Car Thief!
this one was big in my childhood. at least upbeat
Same old Beastie Boys rapping, but the music is softer as they abandon their famous samples of electric guitar power chords. Not bad but loses the edge they had on License.
Прикольные чуваки, видно что панки Второй трек альбома звучит ново, я даже не ожидал. Если хочется почувствовать себя молодым панком - это подходящий альбом
Fresh prince of Bel air. Gabriel o pensador anos 90. parece legal, mas tem que ouvir entendendo as letras e o contexto. muito trampo pra curtir.
Good Stuff!
3+
Some beats fat enough to base obesity on, but vocals a bit grating and repetitive over the length of an album
I liked the other one better but fun to have another Beastie Boys.
okay very samey was ready to stop listening liked the chill first song
Prehistoric. Not one of my favorites.
Never was a huge fan of the beastie boys
Kuulosti ihan Beastie Boysilta. Ei minun mielestä hittejä, mutta ei hutejakaan. Peruskolmonen
This had a lot to live up to after hearing "Ill Communication" the other day and I have to say, it didn't quite get there. The beats were impressive but I think I prefer the actual instrumentation on IC. Still, this was a very good listen.
Decent album by beastie boys. Not really an album of hits, but more filled with fresher beats and styles that weren’t done yet. Beastie boys were just ahead and this album showed that. 6.7/10
Good album, interesting samples.
Production is crazy and I have no idea how they paid for some of these samples (The Beatles!?). Rap wise you know what you’re going to get
fine
Shouty shouty music. Yeh I get the anger and melody and appreciate it, but won't appreciate again. Would have been right at the right time and place (20 years ago)
Enjoyable listen. This music was far too cool for me in 1989…
Yeah. Quite fun, but not my favourite Beastie Boys
Digging the beats, sampling and groove. But I'm kinda disappointed that the album wasn't called Lee's Sportswear.
Started strong but sort of fizzled out?
It's a fun album. I've actually heard this one before. 5 piece chicken dinner is the best song on the album
Dense as heck with cool samples and references. But you can’t listen to BB for long before it all seems so samey. Hey Ladies is basically She’s Crafty down to all the rhymes and phrasing.
I like the Beastie Boys fairly well, although they've never played a lot in my regular rotation. This album seems like pretty typical fare for them: not nearly as good as Ill Communication or Intergalactic for listening to. (After reading the wiki, it looks like this is the definitive album, so I'm certainly glad they made it). 3 stars.
When the Beastie Boys first were popular and hit the scene, the only song I knew was their hit about fighting for the right to party, and I found it a little funny but mostly obnoxious so I avoided their music. I have never heard this album, hadn't even heard of it, and it's actually pretty good. Catchy and clever, some great hooks, and it's interesting that it's all cobbled together with samples. I remember listening to some of the albums that followed, the ones in which they play instruments, and I like a handful of those tracks. Overall, this album is likeable.
I would probably rather invest in the physical Paul's Boutique 😎
A fun listen, I especially like the classic samples. Although I know they were blazing a trail, I can't help but hear Lonely Island. I know L.I. sounds like the Beastie Boys but sometimes it sounds like the other way around, and hearing it that way accentuates the ridiculous juvenile content of the lyrics, making it harder for me to take seriously.
Never can get into how dumb most Beastie Boy songs are. It sounds fine, but thematically ehhhhhhhhh. I hate fun though.
I’ve never listened to this before. It’s cool, but I still haven’t found a way to care about hip hop. Maybe someday.
думал почиляю, а оказалось пореповало
Pioneros del hip/hop, rap de finales de los 80. Canciones con ritmo, normalmente mismas bases, pero que muchas me han sonado muy parecidas.
Setting aside some of the lyrics, this has some dope beats.
Looking down the barrel of a gun is arguably the second greatest BB song, the first being Intergalactic, but as a whole, I'm not a huge fan of this album which I know is sacrilege to some people I know, but they can get fucked.
3/5
I'm more interested in the mixing of "Those Shoes" by the Eagles, The Band's "Up on Cripple Creek" and "Your Mama Don't Dance" by Loggins and Messina on a song named after a Clint Eastwood movie than I am any of the rapping. "High Plains Drifter" slaps without any vocals (so does the movie for that matter). This album is all about the beats, and the "vocals" just get in the way for me. I never listened to this album before today (I sort of burned myself out on the Beasties after Oding on License To Ill). What's amazing about this one is how it speaks to how seemingly easy it was back in 1989 to make an entire album using only samples of any song you wanted to use, including selected songs from Sgt. Freaking Pepper. For what it's worth, the Beasties also sample some of their own songs, which is almost too meta. There's no way anyone could make an album like this today, at least not without paying through the nose for usage rights. Love the album cover, which has become somewhat iconic with items like the Dwight Gooden Mets Jersey and Al Green album prominently on display.
No idea what they're saying, but I can tell they're having fun Great beats but there's a chance that what they're saying could be problematic, but I can't tell what they're saying
Klassiska Beastie Boys andra album. Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun har ett coolt rockingt beat, där bl.a. Bland dessa sticker två ut: A Year and a Day för sitt otroliga flyt, både i produktion och rap. Den modernare lyssnaren (jag) hör att Kendrick Lamars låt "i" använder sig av samma sample som hörs här. Hello Brooklyn har bastrummor som hämtade från framtiden, från Kanye Wests Yeezus. HYPE. Bästa låt: Car Thief. Nära nära nära för låtföljden A Year and a Day -> Hello Brooklyn ur B-Boy Bouillabaisse.
A little disjointed sample-wise, but still some solid beats and bars here. Wish there was more of the aggressively nasty synth and guitar present on some tracks, but the lo-fi production still brings out the savagery across the rest of the tracks.
I still like their style but this one was less jazzy and the beast were more samey. 6
More than 200 samples included on this album. https://paulsboutique.info/ Liked Ill Comm better. Still a solid
Real good.
Perfectly fine, but it all kinda runs together. Nothing really stands out. I think “License to Ill” is better.
Like an exaggeration of the 80s. None of the songs really stick out. Kind of blend together. Glad I listened to it but would never again.
All pretty decent. Hard to pinpoint a standout though, the end section worked very well
I liked a few tracks off of this album, and I can understand why people love the Beastie Boys so much, but really not for me. It gets really repetitive, and kind of just sounds like a bunch of shouting. The humor is also kind of lost on me, and the ultimate thing is that I found myself wanting to listen to the songs sampled more than the songs themselves. Likes: To all the girls Shake your rump Hey ladies Looking down the barrel of a gun Car thief
Ahead of its time. No longer fun
First off, I want to say that I am no near a huge fan of rap, the genre is not one that I go out of my way to listen to. But this album is actually alright. There were songs that were really catchy. Do you believe that this is coming from a person that doesn't even like their most known song? This band really surprised me here. Still, 3/5 stars as it didn't hugely stand out for me.
