Reviews (page 6 of 8)

Never heard of this before and enjoyed it!

I have never heard of this artist before. I like the synthesizers and percussions, and I do like the song DLZ. It's now in my playlist.

Very good listen. So unique and unexpected. T3B 1. Red Dress 2. Love Dog 3. DLZ

This band never grabbed me. That being said this album was more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Seems like they have a penchant for fusing a lot of differing styles of music together, which if that's your thing, right on.

Its well crafted but it sounds like 10 other artists. No distinct sound to it at all.

Meh. It’s ok

This one is hard! Musically I don’t love this album. Lyrically, though, it’s so good! Stork and Owl is really cool. I don’t think I’d listen again, but props to these guys for beautiful writing.

Feels like a bedroom album done by one guy rather than a band. I need to look up some live shows on YouTube. It is fine, but didn't blow my mind. Three and a half probably.

Went in with zero expectations. Enjoyed it. A couple of the vocals were pretty rough and had to hit next.

Interesting and unique. There were a couple times i checked to see if i was still listening to the same album/artist. A few tracks i would revisit.

Shout me out was my fav. Sounds just like all other TV on the radio.

Decent album but nothing stuck out

This was really clever. I'm not familiar with TV on the Radio, but the band covers a ton of musical ground quite effortlessly. Enjoyable. Fave Songs: Crying, Stork & Owl, Love Dog, Family Tree, Halfway Home

Ganska jämn kvalitet, lite gällt och skränigt ibland. Stökiga mixar. Men ett rätt peppigt mood. Sången är lite "väsig", Inte helt i min smak.

Never heard of these guys before - it was OK, but not sure it caught my interest enough to revisit

I had an idea of what TV on the Radio sounded like after not hearing them in over a decade, and it wasn’t quite what I got. The singer reminds me of Cold Cave, and I love me some Cold Cave! I actually prefer the less-funky tracks, those feel less tryhard to me. It’s decent indie rock, but not something I’d return to. C

Day 11 Apparently I initially missed this. I thought I had one more day but I was trudging through a Pavement album. Hopefully this one is better. Halfway Home - 5 - I enjoyed the peppy start of it. I think the voice is okay but I'm really hoping I'm shown that it can do more than I'm hearing on this track. Crying - 5 Dancing Choose - 5 - it was kind of fun I guess. Stork & Owl - 6 - reminds me of the my singing monsters song Golden Age - 5 - crazy that they got Herbert from family guy to sing this one. It picks up near the end though so I'll add a point to the 4 I was going to give it. Family Tree - 7 - sounds nice. Red Dress - 6 - like dancing choose but actually fun Love Dog - 4 - not into it. Shout Me Out - 5 DLZ - 5 - eh Lovers Day - 4 - Boring Make Love All Night Long - 6 Heroic Dose - 3 - too long and doesn't do anything interesting Overall: mediocre for a band with such a cool name 66/130 or about 50%

I liked the variety on the album.

Ima DLZ na ovoj stvari, joj. Odlična stvar.

Maybe heard it once before... Immediately liked the sound and style. Nice smooth voice. Enjoyable. Best Songs: Dancing Close, Golden Age 3/5

Decent album, something a bit different 3.5, family tree is great

I’ve listened to this one a few times prior, but it never really clicked. Nothing really stood out again, I like the Young Liars EP from them and Return to Cookie Mountain. Outside of DLZ (which is an incredible song), and a few other tracks (Halfway Home, Golden Age, Love Dog), this one wasn’t too memorable. I will have to re-listen eventually.

perfectly adequate album. Would not mind if it was on the radio, and would be content to listen to it. Unlikely to add more than a song or two to a playlist.

DLZ Goated Family tree goated Definitely more my style but I Didnt catch the vibe

Indie Rock is by far my favorite genre....TVotR is one of those bands I have never been able to full embrace. Just not my jam completely. Not sure why I don't get it. 3/5

average

Halfway Home, such a great way to start an album, hits you right in the chest gets your ass moving! Crying, upbeat disco vibes not bad, not one I'd come back to. Dancing choose, like spitting lyrics, like the drive in the music and the hook, the HORNS! Stork & Owl, starts slowly, slow jam? Sounds like videogame music a little, skipped. Golden Age, another disco type vibe, that Bee Gees falsetto, kicks in and is a banger, I think this was a single! Family Tree, slow build, piano is slow then drops? Acapella? Not a fan of this really, to minimal but not in a good way. Red Dress, nice DFA vibes, like the Rapture and shit! Nice upbeat tune with fucked up lyrics! Love Dog, slow build again, touching on electronic music, never remembered that, going to be too long for me. Shout me Out, building again, not catching me like others, kind of like the drums, kicks IN!! THIS JOINT GOES!! DLZ, this is a slow burning banger! Lover's Day, cool track, nice way to end it.

I know this is one you’re supposed to like. It’s important and you can dance to it! But I always wonder if the critics who said this was one of the best records of the 2000s ever dust it off and listen to it now. And did they ever dance, or did they just imagine that they might? I could see this meaning a lot to the right person if it came to them at the right time, but I’m kind of surprised at the level of reverence there was for it generally. I mean … it’s fine really. I thought the lyrics were a little overwrought. The singing was a little overstylized and underfelt. I like dense layers and there was a lot to discover if you listen closely, so that was a plus. And they did try to build some tension and textural changes. I didn’t think they 100% succeeded in making those into compelling grooves though, or in using those changes to build something moving. Without achieving a climax of one kind or another, sometimes the music just felt heavy—overloaded to the point of being suffocating. I think they got closest on Golden Age, which is almost great. But even there, I was dying for it to break through into at least one moment of ecstasy or else chaos. I guess since it seems to be ironic/warning they didn’t want to do that. A lot of talent went into this, but it never got up high enough for me to want to listen again. Its a weird 3 for me because if it could have lived up to its ambitions, I can imagine a world where it’s a 5. But since it didn’t, it’s almost worse than something simple done well. I don’t want to hear it again so maybe it should be a 2. But what the hell.

I listened to it twice and I am still intrigued by it. Didn’t really like or dislike it

An interesting listen. I can hear Prince, Talking Heads, Bowie in there, along with their own unique thing. An intriguing mix of styles and sounds.

It's not bad, but not something I'd listen to everyday.

I wished i liked it more. The music aspect is interesting and engaging.... but the vocal element is a whispery & Prince-shrieky in an unusual way. It works for the music, but i don't always enjoy it. Still, songs like DLZ are killer and there are high points in several other tracks. A pretty interesting listsen.

No strong feelings either way.

Great album but I could have died without hearing it.

Very creative and pleasant, but the songs tend to blend together a bit when listening to the full album. In isolation, the songs are pretty great, other than my aversion to the falsetto style that appears every once in a while.

Some unique sounds and tracks, this was an unexpected one. It's better than some of the others on here, and felt a little like a different version of Muse/Coldplay/Bon Iver depending on the song. Very quirky, and I liked that.

A good-sounding recording. Something chill enough and thick I would listen again.

Never heard of the band but I like the name of the band, the name of the album, the names of the songs look promising, and I like the album cover. 2008 is right in the middle of the time period where I lost track of new music entirely. Listening at first I'm a little bored. The album ended and spotify moved on before I even realized it. So listening at second I gave it my full attention. In fact there are quite a few interesting elements going on in the background balanced well so they aren't bonking you over the head. Brass, strings, pretty synth hooks, a little funk. Unfortunately the vocals squat on top, ponderously muffling some of the charm of the music. That might be a bit harsh, altogether I do like it and I think I'll check out their other albums. Best song: Crying

Indie rock. Reminded me of Coldplay, but better and had more range.

1. I FUCKING LOOOOVE SCIENCE 2. Ben Shapiro "Dear Science," meme

Helt chiill faktuskt hade int förvänta mig

Was skeptical at first but warmed up to it towards the middle of the album. If I wanted to listen to whiteboy music sung by a black man I would just listen to Bloc Party though

Helt ok musik i första halvan men gilla int sångaren, föll av en smula i andra halvan

This band doesn't really do a lot for me. I guess I do like the instrumentation and hooks of some of the songs, but that's about it. I did like Halfway home, Family Tree, Love Dog, DLZ and Lover's Day. The rest just didn't really grab me. 6.5 out of 10

Pretty good.

I really do not have any feelings towards this album.

There were so many distinct Influences of other music coming through it was almost too much. It was fine, just fine.

Never heard of these before, but they’re very interesting. Couldn’t quite decide where I stand with them. At times I thought it was really good and other times they just began to grate. But I do think they’re worth another listen.

So weirdly boring 2 3 better ending

This was fine. DLZ, the song from Breaking Bad, was really the only song I enjoyed on here, but I think that's because I'm not a big fan of this type of music.

It’s long for what it is but it’s decent quite a unique blend of rock and electronica, maybe not the most deserving to be on the book but it’s good 3/5.

Varsin kiinnostavaa indierokkailua omalla soundillaan. En kuitenkaan ehkä ihan valtavasti innostunut, joten jätetään 3/5.

Nice album, wasn’t expecting it.

Enjoyable

Inte alls så tokigt. Lite elektroniska inslag gillas.

I liked some of the songs but not all of them.

It’s OK.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Crying (2) 2 - DLZ (10) 3 - Golden Age (5)

6.6/10 Solid album. The second half was better than the first half. Good songs, but some of them went on longer than they had too. I liked the production and the instrumentation, but sometimes the lyrics were meh. Solid overall.

Didn't dislike it, but didn't find it particularly interesting/remarkable either.

I liked this and would listen again.

This was an interesting ride. First time listening to this band, and I was swinging — practically song by song — from "this is a 2" to "this is a 4." Some of the material was really strong — great melodies, interesting songs, cool arrangements. Others were hard to get through — there were definitely times when the vocalists inclinations to vacillate between full voice and falsetto got to be a bit much. But it wasn't just the vocals. There were many moments where it just seemed like the band was trying too hard to impress with Mario-cart keyboard sounds and complex arrangements, and those were the times this album dipped to unenjoyable. I wasn't listening with the song list in front of me, so I don't know which tunes were the ones I enjoyed, but this is one of those albums where I could cherry-pick half the songs and put together an impressive album. But taken as a whole, this was uneven, at least as it relates to my personal tastes.

I wasn't able to get through the whole album but what I heard I enjoyed. This album could have been trimmed. Was a bit too long. Solid sound.

DLZ is my favorite track on here but this album will take another listen or two to get into it. Similar to RKS; overall good. Just listened to Lover’s Day and it is #2 on the album. Definitely a bottom heavy album according to me, but a fun project.

Not bad

Just another average and forgettable album, this one especially was all over the place, each song seemed like a new adventure into a different subgenre, unfortunately not a very good one though

Listened to on 9/12/23 3/5 Favorite song: DLZ This album felt very breathy and whiny and each song felt entirely too long but it was good background music

I didn’t see anything special about this album, at some points it sounded alright and it sounded a little like genesis to me but nothing spectacular.

Solid!

6/10. Some bits were pretty cool, some bits kinda put me to sleep, but maybe I just need to go to bed earlier.

Even though I don’t think I’ve heard much like this it still came across as boring and derivative. Easy listening though. 6/10

OK, but did not set my world alight

#7 Album de alternativa

Funky album. It wasn't really gripping me at first but as I listened it grew on me. I love the artistry here. It's definitely a not for everyone album I don't think, but I can respect what's here. I threw a few of these songs in my Q3 2022 playlist on spotify.

Good indie pop album, but what the cringe kinda title is "Dear Science"? A lot of great lyrics A couple songs that made me cringe a bit, but many moments I appreciated A bit too modern poppy for me, but it was pretty unique and creative

Fav Tracks: Crying, Dancing Choose, Golden Age, Shout Me Out It's nice enough and has some cool parts but I don't think I'll ever listen to it again.

I didn’t like TOTR when I heard them originally, but I appreciated this album much more than I thought I would. But that’s not to say I think anything here is (was) new or groundbreaking. It’s good.

Several good songs, long album with a lot of strange songs as well

Pretty okay, mid 2000s hipster music

There isn’t a single song here that matches Wolf Like Me. But as an album, it stands head and shoulders above Return to Cookie Mountain - and perhaps anything else they’ve done. I think the ‘African’ rhythm guitar trope is overused a bit (did they influence Vampire Weekend? Or the other way round? Does it matter), but still a sterling album.

This was pretty good. But weirdly interesting and forgettable at the same time.

Was quite varied and interesting at times. Good but not great.

Yeah was.ok,.might listen again.

Ah, the selection from our 2nd Album Club.

Nothing amazing, but a pleasant album to listen to.

Great album from the mid naughties, when the Strokes, YYYs, The Libertines, The Vines and The White Stripes all led the pack. TV on the Radio never quite got there in terms of popularity but this was a good album for the time and it still holds up, possible better than many more popular ones from the time.

Fun, not memorable

Generic American indie. I like it but not as much as their previous album. Some solid tunes but not really essential

More obviously my kind of music than most we've had recently, but not one I'd heard before. This is a really nice sound, something in between Bloc Party and M83 in that it's quite synthy indie stuff. Will listen to this again for sure, but I don't think it offers quite enough to make a 4 (although I'm sure it would if I'd come across it back then).

Pretty enjoyable, good song writing with a few different styles. I grew a little tired of the vocals though.

Some OK stuff on this one but probably only one listen for me.

Don't let the name put you off. A mix of funk, electronic, indie rock tunes. Honestly, that knowingly quirky name is the worst thing about this album. Best Tracks: Halfway Home; Crying; DLZ

I'm torn between a 3 star and 4 star review. I liked what I heard but not sure if it's worthy of a 4 star to me. The music quality was there but the listenability wasn't quite there. Not bad at all, just not something I'd seek out to listen to again. 3 stars only because I'm not sure I'd listen again.

Not bad.

7/10 Best Song - Halfway Home

i admire artists jumping around genres and not limiting themselves to just one style. i also admire an album that is cohesive, tight. this album was creative but all over the place. i didn't not enjoy it, but it's at a solid 3 for me. an interesting listen.

This album seems to have a reputation of confusing people...confusing people on why it was included, confusing people on what the genre is, confusing people to the point where they don't even know whether they like it or not. This album was definitely all over the place, sometimes in good ways and sometimes in not so good ways. I like when a band doesn't force themselves to be confined to one sound or style. But that also makes for a mixed listening experience -- you like some stuff and absolutely don't like other stuff. Ultimately, I'm not sure why this album was included, except maybe for the band's daring to be eclectic. This album didn’t hit a home run, but I was interested all throughout.

I really liked how it began. I wasn't a fan of the vocals 100% of the time, but I enjoyed the melodies and production choices. Personally, I feel like I kind of started to lose direction by the second half. I'm not the biggest fan of the alternative genre (if this is what it is). I might give it another spin in the future. Highlights: Halfway Home, Crying, Stork & Owl, Family Tree

Ehh.. it's fine I guess.

Du Indie rock OK, no more no less

His voice adapts depending on the song. Truly remarkable. Arrangements are postmodern and baladic. (6/10) FT: DLZ, Family Tree

Seemed pretty good, but I'll revisit it I think

Every time I've seen them live, they've been disappointing. Better as a studio band. I didn't think this was meant to be their best. It's ok, fine, some nice sounds and textures but can be a bit background-y

I missed the boat on these guys, and I'm not particularly sad about it.

Really good3/5

Going backwards and forwards on this between a three and four. On the one hand, I enjoy it while it's on - on the other, it kinds slides totally outta my head as soon as it's over. Even after three play throughs it hasn't really stuck with me. A three then, I guess... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Fave track - "DLZ" I remember checking the name of it while it was on... Can't remember much about it now though....

OK. Ish.

Prince inspired electronic pop

Indie rock raro. Ni fu ni fa.

There we have it

It was okay. Just not my kind of music.

Middle of road album. I enjoyed the time I spent listening to it.

Best Song: DLZ. A more industrial, almost NIN sound. Worst Song: Dancing Choose. The nasally tendencies of the vocalist stick out more in the chorus of this one. Overall: Pleasantly busy music that jumps genres within the album. Vocals are the weak point, but the production is clean.

Hipsters of the world, unite!

I remember downloading this album on my computer many years ago. I have listened to it a couple of times, but it's been so long since I've heard it. It didn't leave much of an impression on me then. and unfortunately that's still the case now. I did enjoy some moments on this album, though.

I really wanted to love this album and, in time, I think I will. Really love it in fact. But on first listen, it was just slightly out of reach, even…impenetrable? A grower not a shower perhaps. But there is beauty within.

3.5/5 As with any album that refuses to stick to a genre and combines aspects of multiple genres on individual tracks it can be a weird first listen. The beats are put together well and I enjoy the vocalists voice but some of the songs really just don’t click with me. The album sounds modern enough that it could have come out in recent years and many of the messages contained in the songs still pertain to life. The political and social commentary on “Crying” and “DLZ” and the story of love tainted by prejudice on “Family Tree” are still understandable. Fav Songs: Crying, Dancing Choose, Family Tree, Shout Me Out, DLZ Least Fav: Stork & Owl

Achei meio genérico

Wanted it to be better

I am completely unaware of the band TV ON THE RADIO, so I don’t know what to expect. After listening to DEAR SCIENCE, it is not bad at all, I don’t find it experimental at all, but I don’t know what to categorize it. I don’t see it being worthy of an entry in 1001 Albums. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, there is their one and only entry. Rate Artist: TV ON THE RADIO (3) Rate Album (Year): DEAR SCIENCE (2008 Original) (3) Rate Album (Year): DEAR SCIENCE (2008 Deluxe Edition (5 Bonus Tracks)) (3)

Nothing really stood out to me about this one

There are some moments I really enjoy on this album. Sometimes I really didn't love it. I think I needed to spend more time with it. I liked "Halfway Home," "Dancing Choose," "Golden Age," and "Family Tree." Sometimes it just seemed dissonant or repetitive, but there were also very cool and fun instrumentations.

Good tunes but bland sound. I like Golden Age because of the Phish cover, but the cover is so much more alive.

I checked out this band years ago and wasn't into the sound then but I actually really enjoyed this album.

Another solid album by TV On the Radio. Definitely never were on my radar until the previous album from them that was on the list. Still not quite to the level where I think I'd search and seek them out to listen to, but firmly in the camp of enjoying when I come across them.

TV on the Radio were one of the more interesting bands of this era, and I liked that the indie genre became a bit more diverse. But this album seemed to have quite a lot of filler.

Was alright! I might like it more on a second listen. The sound I think is a bit dated, but not in a classic way. Maybe it’ll sound better in 2030. This sounds like the transition from MySpace to Facebook.

This album began TV On the Radio's descent into blandness that eventually swallowed them up. There are a few decent tracks on here, but nothing that really lived up to Return to Cookie Mountain.

Not bad to listen to, but also nothing memorable. Won't be thinking of this album the next day. 3

This is good music to have on in the background when cleaning. I also liked the diversity of the album, and the songs didn’t all sound the same.

Much as I like TV On The Radio, I found this to be a rather mundane listening experience, with few stand-out tracks to make it memorable.

some real jammies but perhaps not for me

Not bad, but there wasn't anything really super memorable

horrible album cover btw

This album was genuinely a lot of fun to listen to. I was pleasantly surprised given how lame this gosh dang album art is, but that's not the point. About half of the songs here were genuinely enthralling. I particularly loved the punishing distorted guitars and drum beats on the opening track, the glitzy riffs on the second track, the genuinely crushing emotional weight of the fourth track, and the huge, echoing piano hits that defined the sixth track. But I can't lie. About half of these songs didn't exactly stick with me. The singing was a little inconsistent-- the singer's distinctive vocal style doesn't seem to fit every instrumental very well. A song like "Dancing Choose" just had too many weird instrumental ideas and this weird almost-rapped delivery that didn't do it for me. I won't come back to this album much, but it wasn't a bad listening experience. Probably a 6/10

Another band I was unfamiliar with - surprised me considering the genre - real vibes of everyone from Black Keys to Kaleo to Leon Bridges - but all a bit meh, but interesting enough i'll search out their other music.

well named. it sounds like soundtrack music

Huh. They don’t pick one of the two prior albums from this band? Weird. I’ll be honest, I haven’t had a chance to listen to this yet and I’m mostly just pissed I somehow missed …And Justice for All day. Because that shit was my jam in middle school. That’s the album that made me like Metallica. Is it as good as Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning? Probably not. But it’s definitely more terrible sounding, but also terribly great sounding. An album truly made for cassette players, and it only cost every ounce of Jason Newsted’s dignity. Brilliant. Five stars.

Feel like this is usually regarded as their third best album?

Enjoyed the album. Enjoyed the different interpretations everyone had.

Well, it's good. But whatever the genre is called, Gorillaz wore it better. On the other hand, I had to relisten to a lot of Gorillaz albums to learn to love them. So yeah, I will relisten at some point.

Was okay not something I would run out and buy

The first track gives me Christmas vibes. Not 100% sure of vocalist's voice in this style. Not my thing - can hear talent though.

totally missed this when released. If you only have room in your heart for one ny post punk revival outfit i chose LCD soundsystem.

A nice album from a band that I've never heard of. Suffers from sounding indistinguishable from everything else from the era. Still, a solid effort.

Have this on CD couldn’t remember any of it bar one track which I remember loving “DLZ” Clearly good musicians but falls flat for me mostly and won’t be back

Not bad, needs another listen. 3.5

This is good and nice and fine but the kind of modern alt radio sound that doesn’t quite get me and that’s okay. I can hear the Bowie in them, that’s cute

ok listening. Didn't love it or hate it.

3.5/5 interesting, i'll have to relisten!

No me gustó mucho

Deserves a few more spins.

it was ok, not what i was expecting

Pretty good album. Weird choice over Return to Cookie Mountain though. I think the increased prevalence of synths on this one is the weakest aspect. Still got some great funk to it though.

Passable but not their best effort

Liked Family Tree, maybe Love Dog as well (the vocals reminded me of Chris Martin)

it was okay, weird that I've never heard of it, songs were all a bit similar to me

I listened to the album in order. It sounds like a soundtrack from an artsy coming of age movie. It's not really like anything I listen to at the moment but I really like the beginning of the song Crying. The song Family Tree got me in my FEEEEELLLLSSS. DLZ is just good I added it to my liked songs lol. Heroic Dose is a master piece (if I listen to it while ripped I think I would transcend). Overall it was a good album and I think they have a really fun sound to them and I would probably listen to other songs by them but I wouldn't necessarily call myself a fan, so imma rate it 6/10.

It was okay generic indie

Kinda forgettable rnb with some alright jams at times 5/10

Good jams, I enjoyed but it wouldn't be an album I search out again.

Boring

Loud opening v jarring, lazy way of singing but a nice kind kind of \"we're trying to be arcade fire vibes\" unexpected change oohhhhh

An enjoyable trip down memory lane. Golden Age and Family Tree are great tunes. Provoked me to go and dig into their back catalogue more, which is all you can ask.

Pretty decent!

Interesting like Radiohead can be interesting. A few funky Talking Heads meets Beck, with some good akt rick textured music.

i dont know i just dont know guys i wish i did but i do not know

too long, I liked the sound but it didn't keep me intrigued enough to listen all the way through, really liked the beginning especially crying

Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: Halfway Home, Family Tree, Love Dog, Shout Me Out Cutting Edge: Dancing Choose, Golden Age, Lover's Day Overall Notes: Pretty good. Nothing quite as good as Wolf Like Me or Happy Idiot, but still a good album. Cut the last 4 songs and it's a 4, as it stands it's a 3.5 rounded down. May come back to this one.

Like the sound, but don't like the rapping parts and nothing really stood out to me.

nice, pretty forgettable

Not bad, some very catchy songs but nothing to write home about, either

Listened to this MF back in 08 the main song is great that's it haha

Yea this is cool. Its like a more electronic, funk inspired They Might Be Giants. Its just not striking me in the right way today.

I absolutely didn't know anything about this band and this album was a very good surprise. It's not absolutely different from standard indie rock from the last decade, but it's a very good example of this type of song. :-)

It's got its moments, but it's kind of just a "meh" album. It sounds like an indie rock band realizing their shtick isn't working and they need to spice it up by adding a twist, but they can't decide what to throw in the mix

Un peu rock, pas mal.

Interesting but no tunes that stood out

Pretty good

Some interesting moments.

Somewhere along the way I confused "TV on the Radio" with "Girl Talk", so I was surprised to hear more of an indie-rock sound. Digging the vocals. Some nice little flourishes/ear candy bits in a few songs as well. A little too straightforward for me in some ways though. 3.5 down to 3.

This was pretty alright. It was kinda funky, so it made for a good listen. It definitely got old by the end of the album, though.

Kind of meh, really, but then again it wasn’t bad

3.5, é bom, gostei do clima pra cima e calmo. Golden age é a melhor do album

Ok album no bad songs but nothing too exciting. Nothing really memorable about it a day later

Pretty solid record. I like TV on the Radio, they’re a solid good modern band

No real thoughts. Didn't enjoy it, didn't hate it.

3.5 stars. These guys have a good overall sound.

Nice rhythm. just not for me though

An album that I've tried before but which ultimately wasn't for me at all. I lost interest quickly this time around as well, it felt like it was trying to be too clever at points but in a thoroughly dull way. Couldn't connect with it at all.

TV on the radio kastar sig mellan genrer.

This is all a bit over-blown, over-produced and rather over complicated - I enjoyed the first track but the album overstayed its welcome somewhat.

the good: Colin Stetson appearance!!! Synth outro on "Crying" was cool. "Family Tree" is a pretty song. the bad: Some of these songs were very annoying. Just loud, unappealing noise. Vocalist works much better on the slower, more atmospheric songs, which seems kind of strange considering their biggest (and probably best) song is an uptempo rock number. Ends up being extremely blah at the end of the day.

Couldn’t finish, very meh at best. Lots of incoherent yelling and just blasting of music.

I liked Family Tree. Otherwise.. I couldn’t really vibe with this one.

I liked bits and pieces of this album, but generally this felt overlong and relatively forgettable. I may have heard some of these songs back in 2008 but nothing that stuck. Like their other album from the project, it’s just not doing anything for me.. 2.25/5

Not great. Not horrible. But not good. Would not recommend or listen to again.

Did not like about half the songs, especially Lover's Day.

Ehhh, this is both annoying and boring, all while pretending to be hip. It's not necessarily bad, but definitely not for me.

On of my (many) regrets of this project has been giving Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes three stars. Should’ve been two! I said to myself for weeks afterwards, while radiating weird vibes that made the other people in the elevator uncomfortable. Although I enjoyed this album more, I give it two in an attempt to right the wrongs of the past.

Quite the eclectic collection of tunes. One track I swear I’m listening to a knockoff version of The Cure and the next it’s a poor man’s Red Hot Chili Peppers. I truthfully am confused and don’t know if I liked it or not.

Not what I expected from indie rock. Whatever this is, I dont like it. Bland and I wasn't a fan of his falsetto.

Dear Science? Dear God. As in dear god, this was blah. Not bad, just there.

The fifth song on the album, “Golden Age”, was the first that interested me. This is not a bad album but another that calls into question the judgment of the original list maker. Given the wealth of creative music in the world, it shouldn’t be hard to pick a thousand that are truly remarkable and even unique. This album has a few good songs but doesn’t qualify as either remarkable or unique. It’s eminently forgettable. Probably a 2 star album. My life is no richer for being exposed to this band 😆

Not to my tastes and not interesting either

A bit boring.

Basic shit

They play really well, all the songs sound distinct, and they clearly have a vast array of influences. But I really didn't like any song besides Love Dog for some reason, and I thought that the whole thing would turn around after that. No, there was just more Arcade Fire theatrics in a more jagged, awkward sounding way to me.

Not my vibe yo 2/5

Didn't know the band. An OK album.

Ok album. I just don't understand why is it on this 1001 list.

The breaking bad song Album! Other than that, it’s not great preferred the last 3 songs BEFORE the boring ending, it’s taking itself so boringly seriously like what are we doing here

didn't think much of this one. some interesting tidbits here and there but it just felt kinda average to me. there's some painfully outdated sounds, especially in the vocal performance. unfortunately outdated indie rock from this era isn't really charming. it just gives quirky millennial burger joint fave track: dlz

Hard to like. Not worth hating.

Thought it was going to get a pass mark but there are a couple of truly terrible songs. Red Dress

Sounds a little like a bad knock-off Scissor Sisters at times. So not so much do I like this.

Meh. Nothing here grabbed me, and the sound was all over the place.

A little rap, a little indie, a Little Rock but not enough of any of that. Started strong, ended weak.

Couldn’t tell you a thing about it just pure wall noise

Strangely, this sounds like the sound of TV on the Radio.

very edgy. i can see how someone might like this. not me unfortunately.

This is one of those records where everything is clearly in place and nothing quite lands. It announces itself as significant from the off - layered, deliberate, very sure that it has something to say. I kept waiting for the point where that confidence translated into something I could actually get hold of. It never really happened. The lyrics are the main issue. There’s a lot of elevated language, but it feels chosen rather than found. Phrases stack up, suggest meaning, then dissolve before they resolve into anything concrete. Reading them doesn’t help. If anything it makes the problem clearer - this is language doing an impression of depth rather than delivering it. There’s also a persistent mismatch between words and rhythm. Lines don’t sit naturally on the groove. You can hear them being manoeuvred into place, which gives the whole thing a faintly constructed feel. Instead of locking in, everything just continues. Musically, it’s competent throughout. The arrangements are tidy, the playing is solid, and there are occasional flashes - some of the horn work hints at something more modular and interesting. But those moments don’t develop. They register as texture rather than structure. Eight tracks in, something finally caught my ear. Even then it felt like a fairly safe song wearing a vaguely Kid A-adjacent electronic coat. Underneath, it’s still straightforward, and the sense of risk never really materialises. There’s a constant feeling of forward motion - a kind of vague marching somewhere - but no real destination. The album keeps implying that something is about to matter, and never quite cashes it in. That’s what turns it from merely unengaging into actively frustrating. I can see why it was well received at the time. It looks like an important record. It sounds like one. But on a full listen, it doesn’t give me enough to justify that status. For all the intent, it never establishes a clear centre of gravity. Fifty minutes later, I’m left with the sense of having heard something carefully made, broadly admired, and ultimately disposable.

4/10… modern rock / indie / *2008

I think the best way I can sum this up is it feels like Fifa music. Now that can either be a compliment or an insult. That's how this album feels. It has elements I like but then loses me immediately. As a whole album, no I didn't enjoy this. I've heard this style done better by other artists of the time and maybe that's why their songs remain in playlists you see for the decade. There are some songs that are good but nothing that sticks for me. The whole thing feels forgettable to listen to, but nothing I would stand up to turn off. Not quite 1 material. Also I hate the album cover and name it sucks.

I have never heard of them before. Quite groovy but the vocals are too often on the edge to annoying. 1,5

Interesting enough to keep my attention, and definitely some cool explorations, but it was just a little too erratic for my liking. I know they have other albums I've enjoyed more so 2.5 rounded down.

This list has way too many dance-rock-electronica hybrids. I think that LCD Sound System did a good job perfecting that while indie bands like this one here have something very annoying to them. This album can be all right enough for some and maybe I would've liked it more if the singers would've kept it down a notch.

Very typical for the era. Reminds of Passion Pit in spots, Metronomy in others. Bold move opening an album chanting buh buh bump - already losing interest before we even begin. 2/5

Significantly better than the last album from these guys, but still not good. Too forced and too boring. 1.5/5.0: Bad

I feel I should have enjoyed this more than I did, perhaps another listen is required. While guitar-driven, I enjoyed the funky, afrobeat components, but it all felt a bit jumbled. File under listen again.

Eminently forgettable

Each song has incredible variety. It feels like weather in the Midwest USA. The saying in that area is "If you don't like the weather, wait an hour". Well in a sense, that saying applies to this album as well. If you don't like the song, wait 3-4 minutes and you've got something completely different than what was just playing. I didn't hate any moment of this album, but it was pretty room temperature the whole way through. No particular song stood out to me, no song made me skip, no song had any lyrics or melodies that I can justify adding to my daily playlist. It's white bread with bologna and American cheese. It's inoffensive, universal, and unapologetically bland. If any album so far deserves a 5/10 it's this one.

Upon first listen I found it annoying. I decided to return to it 3 weeks later… still annoying.

Some potential, but again vocals ruin the listening experience for me.

The one thing that really drags down this album for me is the vocals. The way that he uses it in this album sounds quite flat, and it results in it sucking the life out of everything else. There are some interesting elements to this indie rock album, but after a while, it becomes just background sound. It's a shame, because I really liked their song "Happy Idiot" as a kid.

Sounds like all the bands of that era, depressed with a voice like if they had been kicked in the nuts. Its fine as background music but that's it. 2.5

Was interested by their first album but this didn't feel so fresh or creative

Another 2* Indie Rock album. It shouldn't be on the list, but Blind Melon should be. Specifically, their self-titled debut album. That would be a 4* because while it is an indie rock album at its core, it has a smash hit, is vastly superior musically, and has actual depth of lyrics.

It was ok, but not mind blowing. Liked the first track.

I don’t get the hype here at all. This album refuses to be anything. Not experimental, not poppy, not lyrical, not beautiful, not weird, not anything. It’s just dull.

I didn’t warm to this. Never heard of this band before. The opening track was intriguing until the guy started to sing. After that, a combination of the guys singing and dull tracks didn’t sustain my interest.

Interesting listen, but couldn't grab me. The music was unorthodox and surprising in that indie kind of way, but I found very little to grab me. Not sure I'll go back to this.

This is not the indie I'm looking for. 2/5

not really for me

Maybe I’m just not in the right mood for this today.

I would put money on this being one of the albums which was cut from more recent editions. Was this so popular or influential that it needs to be in the list? It took me most of a day to listen to this as it's just so bloody boring. It's musical hipster 2000s indie rock wallpaper. It's not awful, but who sits down and listens to this?

pretty boring

That was very hit and miss. I'd already heard another one of their albums via this site, but that was over a year ago and so I had no real preconceived ideas. The first track was just boring, so the bar was initially set quite low, then tracks 2 and 3 were really enjoyable, which perked me up a bit. Then it devolved into a sort of crappy Coldplay tribute band. Coldplay are pretty crappy themselves, so a crappy version of them is not an enjoyable experience. Anyway, I did listen to the whole album so it's not a 1 star experience - I can;t bring myself to give 3 stars though, so it's 2 stars - which does feel about right.

DLZ is a banger, the rest of the album aint

it was average 2 Stars light 4 out of ten

Didn’t care for this much, and it’s late. Two stars.

I just don't get it me, it's not offensive to my sensibilities, but it doesn't speak to me

Like a discount rack at a dollar store version of Gorillaz

Not for me

4/10 I’ve heard of TV On The Radio before, but couldn’t tell you much about them really, so this should be interesting at least. There are a lot of elements here that are right in my wheelhouse, creative sound design and synth use, an edge of funk and a quirky little indie edge. Unfortunately, none of that really gelled particularly well for me or really grabbed hold of me and demanded my attention. One of the strangest things about it was that, despite them seeming to have spent quite a lot of energy working on building dense rhythmical ideas, these were limited to fairly short loops that then repeated fairly relentlessly. It also felt very robotic, with everything feeling almost too tight and lacking a human edge to it that would bring out the heart of the groove. And that extended to a lot of the instrumental parts too. I don’t know how much of it was live instrumentation and how much was samples, but much of the instrumentation felt like it had had a lot of its soul quantised and compressed out of it in the production process. When this sat in the background, out of my main focus, I grooved along to it nicely enough, but every time I tried to focus on it, I found there was little to hold on to and beyond that, there were bits that were actively annoying. I don’t think the lead vocalist is particularly good and he has a fairly affected style that only really worked for me during certain songs. As a background listen this was decent enough, but there are plenty of bands that lean in this direction that I would much prefer to listen to, and unfortunately there was nothing memorable enough to really settle this is an album worthy of continued repeat listening. Halfway Home - An interesting droning into that feels like it’s building up to something. It’s quite a nice tension builder, but it never really develops into anything vastly satisfying, and also feels overly long for an album intro track. I quite like the sound design and atmosphere that’s built, but it’s not particularly harmonically interesting. Crying - A nice bit of rhythmic programming to start this off, and it’s already got a bit more to it than the opener. The funky guitar is pretty tasty, but lacks variation to give it more feel. I quite like this, and the shuffling groove is pretty good, but it all feels a little bit too robotic, lacking the fluidity of something a little more human. It’s also a little on the repetitive side and never really finds its way to anything vastly memorable. Dancing Choose - There’s a little more attitude thrown in to the vocal here in places. There’s also a little more variation to the emphasis from verse to chorus, which is nice, but it starts feeling a bit too hurried after a while and things get a bit loose and cluttered. It all feels a little bit relentless and like it’s struggling to keep up with itself. Stork & Owl - This is a little plodding and melodically unfocused. I think the lead vocal here is pretty weak and the strings feel very static and robotically programmed, rather than warm and organic. It also doesn’t really go anywhere. The layering of everything is theoretically nice, but doesn’t feel all that well executed to me. Golden Age - This starts out pretty promisingly, but again, I feel the programming of a lot of the parts is very, very static and because of that it feels like it takes a long time to get anywhere. When things do come in, it builds quite nicely. The general groove is pretty good, but the lead vocal largely seems very thin and fairly unconvincing. This is in that weird space where it’s getting me shuffling along to it, but there’s no really standout element of it to me, and I expect I won’t really remember much about it by the time the next track comes on. Family Tree - This kind of sounds a bit like Coldplay if they were a more interesting band. The string arrangements are pretty nice and they do some decent work of building things up, but it all feels a little bit obvious and the piano and vocal line running along the exact same melody doesn’t hep to add depth to the composition. I can hear little touches of inspiration from Sigur Rós in there, but it’s way less lush and emotionally centred than them. It’s nice but fairly bland. Red Dress - This is better. It’s got a great skittering rhythm and plenty of different instrumental parts that extend and enhance that rhythm. I’m still not convinced by the vocalist. It feels like he’s doing a bit with his vocal delivery, or is so unconvinced by his vocal ability that he has to ‘sing’ in a half-spoken, very plosive way. It works better here than it has on other tracks and I’m getting into the groove of this one a lot more. There’s some solid layering on there, but it’s got such a weak keyboard solo to end it that it just limps away. Love Dog - We get another interesting, shuffling rhythm that after a couple of loops starts to feel altogether too static. It’s weird, because it does quite a lot in that loop, but perhaps that’s why it sounds so repetitive. This builds quite nicely in ambience. It’s another where the component parts tick a lot of boxes for me, but ultimately the execution, while making me tap my toes along to the groove, doesn’t really produce much of an emotional or engaged response. It feels a bit stylistically mixed between the shuffling, skittish drums and the long, legato wash of strings and it doesn’t really gel all that well for me. Shout Me Out - A slow shuffle gets us moving here, but it takes too long to develop. I keep getting distracted by other things while trying to review this because nothing is really getting hold of me. When it finally gets a shift on and does something, it doubles time, but it’s really not convincing. The guitar parts in these sections are repetitive and jarring. And then they drift off into an aimless guitar widdle that does nothing aside from aimlessly meander. DLZ - Ah, this is a solid, atmospheric start. This vibe works better with the vocal and he gives it a bit more swagger in his delivery. This is definitely my favourite on the album. It’s really nicely produced and creates a deep and interesting vibe. It also manages to create some good hooks, build some nice dynamic range and maintains the best of their skittering beats. I think this just managed to hook up the best bits of what they were trying to do elsewhere and brought them together in a coherent and satisfying way. Lover's Day - This is oddly militaristic in sound. It feels like they’re trying to build something, but despite that rolling beat, it never really goes anywhere. Overall it feels pretty unconvincing, a little to rhythmically repetitive and lacking in any significant musical phrases to grab on to. Ultimately, it’s just a bit boring.

Never been impressed with TV On The Radio is this experience was no different

felt very 2000s indie. it was fine but nothing really spoke to me

This is ok - TVOTR never really stood out to me for whatever reason.

Wasn't really my thing. Had some neat sounds and I liked Red Dress, but this pretty quickly just became background music for me. Wasn't bad, but probably won't be revisiting this one. 5/10, was originally leaning towards 3 stars but honestly I’m going with 2. This kind of indie electronica stuff has the occasional neat sound but I just don’t really care for it.

Polished, densely layered grooves built from glossy synths, punchy bass lines, processed guitars, and emphatic vocals folded into the mix move this art-rock album like standing in a brightly lit showroom playing "motivational" music—slick and busy, but ultimately generic, faintly annoying, and exhausting rather than energizing.

Just some of the most mid music you’ll ever hear. It’s not amazing but it’s not terrible, it just is.

Literally the first 0.5 seconds of this made me tense up. Stereotypical mix of stereotypical late-oughts arrangements and vibes. I dare this list to give me something from this time period that doesn't sound like most everything else that came from this time period. Suivant/next.
