Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Didn't listen to the while thing but very cool. Some parts have that intense small sound thing in only one ear thats v uncomfy in a good way
Would listen to again Family tree is good
Interesting, to say the least.
This is huge. A barn stormer of an album. Heard it get great reviewers but never properly explored until. I’ll definitely be revisiting this one!
Really enjoyed this, hadn't heard of them before but will check out some of their other stuff. Red dress and love dog were the stand out tracks for me.
I forgot how good this album really is.
Never listened to TV On The Radio that i know of before. Enjoyed the album. Music was good. Had it on loop all day but don't think any of the songs will really stay with me. Don't think it'd be a 'favourite'.
I really loved their previous album. This one wasn't as good imo.
Liked this. Good energy good tunes. Would listen to again. 3.5 and rounding up.
Can't place who they remind me of. Family Tree reminds me of Coldplay, but also some other pop/rock bands (Fun? Passion pit?) A Little bit slow, downbeat at times for my tastes. I like the instrumentation though, quite rich and musical, strings, horns etc. But then Red dress is funky, do I know this already?? Very danceable. Album is a grower. Prefer the second half.
I wasn’t expecting nothing with this one, 2008 was about something else for me, and also I don’t like the title lol, but it’s a gorgeous record and I liked a lot, I’m sad to see I missed so much Mack in my youth but also glad I keep founding this gems
Didn't like it very much before but now I do!
Art rock with a sense of dread but full of catchy hooks and a smart pop element, loved this album when it was out and it still sounds good. Halfway Home & DLZ are superb but it’s a great, maybe forgotten, album.
A band I never heard of, an album of songs I didn’t recognise. What a treat this was. So much going on, interest, varied, fun. Definitely one I will keep coming back to
Brilliant sound, enjoyed coming back to this.
Very enjoyable, I like the brass instruments
This was surprisingly enjoyable! I didn't know what to expect but found this to be a mix similar to Jamie T, Arcade Fire, We Are Scientists.. some songs I wasn't to into but going to score highly for surprise and variety element
This was a goodun, don't really know the band much but really enjoyed this album
Great album. Features "Golden Age" which is covered regularly by Phish.
Never heard of these guys surprisingly enough. Opening track was like a mash up of Everything Everything and Interpol with a sprinkle of LCD Soundsystem. Interesting vibes. Enjoyed the album and gave a few listens. Took a few and added to my Spotify playlist. Will deffo be listening to their other albums. Most intriguing yet.
Love it.
Really liked this album…somewhat familiar with them. Going to listen to more of them
I only knew two of their songs previously, 'Happy Idiot' and 'Wolf like me', this album was much more relaxed than those, nice Indy chill album. The First track 'Halfway home' had a hook line that some friends used to sing but I never knew the song until now, which was pretty cool for me. Overall enjoyed it
Not the kind of thing I usually listen to, and I had never heard anything by them before. Indie alt stuff. On the one hand I did really enjoy it and find it interesting, but on the other, I can't really recall any songs. Definitely one I will come back to though.
Awww I haven't listened to this in a long time. This isn't my favorite album of theirs but I fucking love TVOTR. Surprised they didn't have Desperate Youths on this list instead actually. Man I used to love Stork & Owl.
very solid album - reminded me vocally of Peter Gabriel, not as quirky
New to me, liked the rock sound and lyrics
Loved this album. The rhythms and added horms make this album very catchy from the first note. It is only after listening a few times that I was able to start to focus on the lyrics which turned this into a completely different experience for me. The urgency of the lyrics added some tension to the sound. All songs are great but early favorites are Halfway Home, Crying and Lover's Day. The horns bring a really nice touch to this album so I checked out who was playing, The Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra (worth a listen!). I really feel the Prince vibe but at the same time there as some songs that seem to draw comparison to the National
This really feels like the proper evolution of indie, rock, soul, funk, etc. It's a fusion without explicitly selling itself as such, allowing boundaries to be broken at will when it suits the band. I'm always curious about music that was released at the end of the Bush administration, and this record definitely feels a little jaded, as the politics really mix well into this concoction. Fav Tracks: Family Tree and Halfway Home
a lot better than i was expecting. i will probably listen to this again.
I had never listened to this album in it's entirety before. Very well done, reminds me of what my old band tried to do at times. Dig it.
Maybe it was because my first listen was pre-coffee (grumpy boy), but I liked this immensely more on the second listen. First half is damn good, went 5/5 on liked songs and eventually just went and saved the album. Didn't like the second half quite as much, brought me down on the album overall as I felt it dragged on a bit. Still, the start was good enough for me to give this a solid 4. Saved: Halfway Home, Crying, Dancing Choose, Stork & Owl, Golden Age, DLZ
On the third song, so far this album is top notch. Listened to a couple of TV On The Radio albums before and enjoyed both of them but this one beats both those out by miles. 4/5 so far. Finished the album, still a 4/5. Maybe 4.5/5 even. Really good.
🎄
A bouncy album. The songs are long, but I was surprised at how short they feel when I’m listening to them. It might be partially due to the constant shifts in the sound that spans each song (and that spans the album, really). No one song sounds too much like another, but the sounds aren’t so disparate that the album lacks cohesion. There are definite highlights (“Crying”; “Golden Age”; “Family Tree”; “Shout Me Out”) and the best of the album outruns the album’s worst parts (“Red Dress”; “DLZ”). And, like every album on the cusp of being great, this album has songs that I can’t figure out if I like regardless of how many times I listen (“Dancing Choose”; “Love Dog”). All in all, a really great album. 7.5/10.
Spent a lot of time listening to this before. Very good front half, some dips in the second half.
Pretty solid and surprising
Buena experiencia.
4.2 + TVOTR sounded like a band that was able for a brief period to harness their collective talent in full and stretch it to almost to its breaking point. The creative energy and ambition in this record burst forth at every turn. The rhythms, the sounds, the lyrics, the vocals. It’s undeniable.
love dog dlz
O no recuerdo... 8/10
Art rock that combines techno and indie vibes that are straight from the 2000s. Has a nostalgic feeling and quiet but powerful lyrics. Not one to have on repeat but definitely one to repeat for the mood.
I know I’ve heard this group before because I recognize the voice and sound. But I don’t think I’d heard any of this one. It’s pretty good, I enjoy it musically and at times when I’ve paid attention, lyrically. The silent track was probably interesting …. Once. Then just annoying. I’ll check more of them out.
I really enjoyed this and would listen to it again. TV on the Radio is a band I had occasionally heard a song or two from, and liked, but had never really sought out. I may be on the verge of fandom after this.
Brooklyn Indie. I’m supposed to like it. But it sounds like music I’m supposed to like.
Pretty good
Great album and great band! Had always heard good things but have never listened. Great construct between two singers voices
This is precisely why I embarked on listening to random albums. Somehow I had never even heard of this band. This album is fantastic, so many different styles covered and all done so well. I feel like I've found treasure. Highlights: Dancing Choose Red Dress DLZ
7/10
Decent funky punky sound
Just as I remember
Wow! This was excellent. I really liked their style, and will definitely check out more from them.
Mindblowingly good, despite hideous cover. Really excited that it’s by a nearly all black rock band.
great
this experience is making me realise i don't know a lot of artist lol. another first. not necessarily bad but i didn't enjoy it.
Never heard of this band before. Some really interesting stuff here. Not everything sticks for me but there are some highlights
Either collectively or individually the band members are heavily influenced by Prince. Apart from a few songs of his I don’t like Prince despite his musical abilities. So I conclude that if it wasn’t for the inclusion of the ‘Princy’ songs this would be a great album. The first track is exceptional and made me think I was in for a great new discovery. But then came along the shadow of you know who to spoil things. I could extract a few good songs from the album to make an exceptional good EP which thanks to the marvels of streaming playlists I’m about to do. 3/5 27/6/26
Not for me personally, but I can see why people like it - definitely a refreshing, original sounding album.
Þrjú rennsli, fínir sprettir en heilt yfir ekkert brjálæðislegt eftirtektarvert. Solid þristur.
It’s alright - a band and album I’ve never heard of but fits with the kind of indie pop wave of the mid aughts. A little more introspective than like Matt and Kim or Passion Pit, with more songs a bit more toned down so almost a mix with something like The National. I’m not sure if the album is front loaded or if I just lost interest the further it went on. A fine album.
Interesting choice to make it on the list, would’ve assumed return to cookie mountain would be on here, if anything. It’s not a bad album, but at the same time I’m not blown away, none of the songs really got to the level of wolf like me or happy idiot. Heroic dose was a nice little interlude though
This is an interesting album that's a little all over the map. I'm hearing sounds that remind me of many different artists, including the King of Leon album we just had, so idk how to place this genre-wise. I don't love it, but it's decent.
Had its moments, but a bit all over the place. Highlights were a pocket of really great songs deep in the album, Love Dog, Shout me out, and Dlz. Some other decent songs sprinkled in, but a few that soured things.
Some very catchy tunes, but also some blander ones. Overall a bit too lenghty for my taste. A little bit bloated
Somewhat familiar with the band. Kind of hard to describe their version of rock, but I like the vocals and the sound when I'm the right mood, even if none of the songs of this particular album stay with me once it's over
This group has been a big blind spot for me - I have heard about them a lot and (my memory is foggy but) I think I checked out their first album and it didn't grab me so I never bothered to check them out any more than that. Unfortunate because I like this! And now I regret missing Tunde Adebimpe at Big Ears this year (although looking at the schedule I see that he was opposite my David Byrne show, so I wasn't going to see him regardless...) This is an easy 3 stars for me and might even be 4 stars with a few more listens.
I couldn't get with this one. I'd seen that this is classified as indie,so it couldn't be too bad. Like the first track was a complete earworm, it sounded like Joey Ramone (of the Ramones) was doing the humming. I don't recall liking the rest of the album. I think the instrumentation - especially near the end - was really quite dense and busy, by the last couple tracks I was completely done with it and wanted to be over. Which the emotions it gave me sure influenced my rating and made me more critical than I otherwise would've been. I like shoegaze music, so it's not in general dense music, just the way they went about specifically doing it I suppose made me overstimulated. I didn't like it; won't see myself returning to it. Highlight Song/s: "Halfway Home"
I could see this album playing throughout an early 2010s indie movie and I am really not mad about it. Chill instrumentals!
I didn't hate this album and I wouldn't be mad if someone put it on at a party, but it felt a bit overwrought, a little try-hard. The stock samples (eg the clapping), flowery lyrics that gesture at poetry while not really synthesizing into anything very interesting, the orchestral instrumentals layered with synth samples that were lovely on some tracks but cacophonous on others - I wanted it to work. But it didn't really come together the way I wished it did. bro he just pronounced tether as "teether" to rhyme it with ether, fuck off. songs where the instrumentals worked best: stork & owl, golden age
3.5
This has sweet moments and danceble moments, strangely enjoyable album.
Meh it's fine, not ground breaking but easy to listen to
Very interesting and had some fun moments but a bit too much for consistent listening.
Just ok - probably won't listen again.
It was fine, I liked Family Tree most
I really don’t understand this band in the slightest. After listening to both of their albums for this project, Dear Science is the second of 2 TV On The Radio albums I have rolled, following Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes. Virtually every comment I made about that album I still feel the same way about this time around as well. It’s almost shocking to me that either album was included. They’re both fine, but I’d hardly say either are important enough to include in the book. I’ve never heard of this artist, so unless I’ve been living under a rock, they were probably a flash in the pan. Hardly worth celebrating twice. Every song here is such a radically different tone shift, it’s like they just recorded a million different things and wanted to see if any of them stuck. Some songs are very light almost orchestral beats, others are light Rock, there’s a tiny bit of Electronica here and there, and some are pretty Funky. None of them blow me away, and most of them leave me wanting just a bit more. Some even seem like parody or imitations of much better bands. The songs I enjoyed on this album really stood out though, and all of them prominently feature the lead singer singing his heart out with very high energy. My favorite songs are all the ones where you can tell everyone was having a blast recording. “Dancing Choose” almost starts in a rap, but remains a fun little bop throughout, cool trumpet included. “Red Dress” might not be the most memorable song on the album, but it was actually my favorite of the bunch. It’s the most traditional Rock song on the album, has some cool vocals, a good beat, and a catchy hook. I really appreciated how well it all flowed together and wasn’t overly artsy like so much of the album is. The other song I really liked was “DLZ”. I can see why it was the big hit on this album. It’s catchy, a bit dramatic, and a bit edgy, but it’s certainly got charm as well. Perfectly encapsulated the kind of music that was very popular pretty much throughout the entire 2000’s to late 2010’s. I didn’t love this album admittedly. They try to do too much and don’t succeed a lot of the time. When it’s not really good, it’s usually pretty boring, or worse, skippable. There’s a lot of skippable songs here. But when they actually manage to find their groove, I’m into it. Still though, it’s an alright album. I wouldn’t really want to return to it, but it was fun enough listening to today. We’ll go with a 3.4/5 for this, and move on to the next one. That’s another band done, I’m starting to really make some good progress here.
Really good
Well this was a thoroughly naughties affair. It had a few standout tracks but I’m not sure how often I’d listen to them.
Fun shit
Ok
I really enjoyed this album. There’s a lot going on in these songs but it still feels simple and uncluttered and everything comes together into sounds that are both unusual and catchy at the same time. The songs have real groove to them, which isn’t something you always get with indie rock. You can hear bits of all different styles of music mixed in and I dug it. A high 3.
I like where this was going even if it didn’t always get there. Good background / mixer music but nothing too introspective.
Intro track was pretty cool but it sort of tapered off after the first two tracks. Still enjoyed it. Parts of it were pretty cool
big 3
Pleasant background indie
Good songs, but I won't remember most of them a week from now.
--Halfway Home…a wall/cacophony of sound. it’s pleasant. The last minute kicks it up a notch --Crying…Bowie-esque --Dancing Choose…I like how horn-forward this is. vocals not great --Stork & Owl...melodrama --Golden Age...I enjoy the beat but the production is overwhelming. every successful band artist doesn't need a Phil Spector record --Family Tree...the schmalzy production works for this one. but also descends into melodrama --Red Dress...digging the funky horns. groovy bass, too --Love Dog...something a little more restrained. still a little over produced but very nice --Shout Me Out...the Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. the back half is fun --DLZ...this is great. they create a great sense of foreboding --Lover's Day...I like half the song. would prefer to like all of it. I appreciate the big swing
joa. 3/5. war gut aber is nit volle positiv aufgfallen
I have tried to enjoy TV on the Radio in the past and it has not stuck. They are like Bloc Party with a little more weirdness in their sound. Overall, this was a fine album and I guess it should be in the book. Honestly, I can take or leave TV on the Radio. Dear Science is fine, but it is also the kind of album that gave music critics a huge boner in the 2000's, because it gave them an "underground" band they could claim to understand more than you. "This is good music, you just don't get it like I do." Not bad but what TV on the Radio is doing here, I like better when other artists do it. I enjoyed listening to TV on the Radio more now than I had prior, so there is that.
Poppiger Sound. 3/5
Something about this just doesn't connect with me. I'm not sure how to best quantify it, but the album just feels overly synthetic/digital in a way that doesn't appeal to me. It's not bad, but lacks a certain element that keeps me from truly enjoying it.
It's a good album but not great. It's got some jams I used to love and come back to occasionally but I was never really sold on them being great
I know I need to familiarize myself with more music made this century. But so much of what’s been represented in this project is about as inspiring as plain yogurt. Not bad, but almost immediately forgotten.
#388 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ❌ ✅ TV On The Radio has been just a name on hipster music influencers playlists to me. I read a bit before spinning the album and I was mildly interested in their mix of influences. However, the likes of Stereogum and Pitchfork are usually quite plentiful with their hyperbole, so when they say post-rock or punk or whatever the fuck else, it's usually not even close to how I would describe any of it. So far, this sounds like indie pop with electronic vibes and a touch of modern soul and r'n'b. Got bored around mid way through, skipped to an apparently popular track "DLZ" and gave up. Luke warm 3/5
Very much not my jam.
It was fine, not my favorite album
Sometimes funky, in a good way. More times theatrical, in a campy way.
Never heard of this. Quite pleasant
This is #day629 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… when I got my first TVOR record, which was like a forever ago, I was genuinely impressed by how much I liked it. Maybe because I'd never heard of the band before, and I liked that experimental edge. It turns out that the album eventually got dropped from the list. Sometimes I just don't get the logic of this list. Anyway, with Dear Science, I can kind of see where it's coming from, with its blend of art rock, post-punk, and touches of funk and soul, but… I just don't know. The music is fun, but is it something you have to hear before you die? Let it be a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day630.
Me gustó, suena lindo y tranquilo.
Handful of hits, handful of misses. It's ok but I dunno'. It's just not grabbing me. Dancing Choose, Red Dress and DLZ stand out.
Should be 3.5 (still ridiculous we can't rate 1/2 stars).
465/1089 - There's some cool instrumental ideas but nothing really catchy. There seems to be a lot of Radiohead influence but I think the thing that makes Radiohead work is the same thing that makes the Beatles and XTC work: the dynamic between an intuition-based songwriter and a highly-skilled technician. Yorke and Greenwood, Lennon/McCartney and Martin, Partridge/Moulding and Gregory all balance each-other out to make something special. Tl;dr I think you need the theory guy and the feelings guy for stuff like this and not just "vibes."
This is perfectly fine but not really my type of music and not sure why it's on the list. I feel like there's not a lot interesting to say on it.
Super smooth
Whatever. This came and went without me really feeling anything
First half is a snooze. Second is pretty good. I hate doing 3s but sometimes it fits.
Unexpected favourite, very blunt lyrics and catchy. Favourite Track: Family Tree
I was hating this for the first couple of tracks but it slowly started to grow on me and by the time it got to Red Dress I was really enjoying it. There’s definitely a few tracks on here I will go back to but I don’t think it’s one I’m likely to go and listen to in full again. Top Track - DLZ
I really did like quite a few songs, i would probably listen to again, but not the whole album really i wish everything wasnt a 3 all the time
lyrics are fine, instruments too, vocals surely aren’t anything special but overall it’s listenable. A high 3
Decent album
Listenable entertainment
Coldplay without the whining. Enjoyed this.
Listening on a long car journey, which isn't ideal. Also not ideal that some of the album effects make the car sound like it's f*cked. Ideals aside, I don't know what to make of this even after a couple of spins. But I love the energy and variety, and think I'll keep listening. A benefit-of-the doubt-driven 3*
Decent - I'd listen again
Pretty good new album
Horns, Gabriel Halfway home Dancing choose
I did college radio in the late 2010s and my station still had their old poster from the release of this album up on the wall of the studio when I was there, as well as one from some band called "Loney Dear". And yet, I don't think I ever listened to it! Now that I'm more interested in 00s indie, it was a good time to fill that gap, I guess. It's cool how they don't really sound like anything else I've ever heard, but I'm not sure that I actually enjoy them all that much outside of "Wolf Like Me", which isn't on this one. Probably better than Loney Dear though, at least.
Science. It works! I’m not sure this album does?
28/03/2026 I've heard better and nothing really stood out. On to the next one. Spotify listeners: 1.5 million
Not totally average pop. Sometimes interesting.
Family tree and lovers day were so gooood
album #17 Okay so I liked quite a few of the songs on this album, but I'm not 100% sure why it's on this list haha. I'm not opposed to it, and really loved 'Dancing Choose', and 'Lover's Day', but I'm not sure it constitutes an album that is necessary to listen to. It's of its time but not particularly influential or noteworthy to be deemed an album to listen to before death LOL! A solid indie album. Nothing particularly special about it, but I enjoyed listening to an album from a band I had never heard of before :D average track rating: 2.8 favourite track(s): dancing choose, lovers day least favourite track(s): red dress, golden age album rating: 3/5 number of albums left to review: 1,072 number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 8 albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 3 albums from the list I won't include on my list: 14
Not a fan but I do know of them. I may have even caught them at a festival. Not my type of indie rock but I respect them so much
This is just 2000’s indie rock and like yea it’s good it’s just that. I’m sure twenty one pilots heavily like this band.
While I do wish TV on the Radio had stuck with the very intense and rejuvenating sounds of Return to Cookie Mountain, I am also perfectly fine with them going in a more accessible direction for their third project, Dear Science. This project feels more groovy than any of the band's past projects but still in the very strange and appealing way. I wouldn't call this a Pop record by any means but it is the closest the band has gotten to that kind of sound due to the accessible songwriting and very soft instrumentation compared to their more dreamy and noisy productions on previous albums. Even with this having much stronger critical praise I didn't find it to be significantly better than some of their previous work, yes it feels more polished but it also feels safer and a lot less willing to make risks and do something more noteworthy. Even with an album like Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, one I enjoy less than this project, I feel it is somehow more memorable than this one despite the clear difference in quality. Dear Science is a cool project don't get me wrong, but it doesn't really bring as much interesting discussion or even notable songs to the table as some of TV on the Radio's previous hence why I don't have much to say here about it. It is good, but that is about it.
Pleasantly surprised by this - pretty ok indie rock, but nothing really exceptional. It was decent enough.
Nothing was quite in this pocket when it came out. It isn't a perfect album but it has some really bright spots and certainly is something I used to spin up and leave on while cleaning really often.
It's kinda good but a little too precious. Also Breaking Bad BatChest!!! Will I listen to again: 25%
These guys are writing to science? What a bunch of nerds.
Average contemporary / indie alt rock. Not bad.
Surprise like for me.
Fine enough for what it is, but I don’t really see it as being particularly cutting edge warranty particular attention. But it was a fun enough listen.
Pretty sweet honestly
Fairly good, but do not feel I'll listen to it again
This sounds like a 40 year old dad's version of what indie rock should sound like. And his voice is terrible.
It's fine and interesting, but I don't think this is one of the albums I NEEDED to hear before I die, you know?
I like it! Idk if I’d listen to it again but it’s fun
Never heard them before, and I genuinely couldn't figure out what I was hearing at first, in a good way. Really interesting blend of genres and influences, but the songs didn't grab me.
I vaguely know TV On The Radio and have a couple of their songs saved on Spotify but I can't really say that I've spent any time listening to them. So this one is basically an unknown for me. I do remember a lot of people comparing them to Radiohead when they first came out. Maybe the Radiohead fans needed a new band? I don't really remember. Some cool vibes to start off. Nice and chill sort of ambient stuff. Then Dancing Choose starts and you've lost me here a bit. It goes back to the sort of airy ambient fluff afterwards. It just kind for carries on from there. I'm not sure this is really for me. It was ok but even thinking back after a couple of hours I can't remember any of the songs specifically, more just the overall feeling of the album. One and done for me. 2.5/5
It's got a lot of elements I love (horns, funk with the rock groove) but just doesn't come together into something I love.
so mid
another 2000s album. not sure what this is necessarily reminding me of, but it does feel reminiscent of 2000s music in some way
I like this; there's only a couple songs I would listen to again, but I enjoyed it overall.
Halfway Home 3/5 Crying 3/5 Dancing Choose 2/5 Stork & Owl 3/5 Golden Age 2/5 Family Tree 3/5 Red Dress 3/5 Love Dog 4/5 Shout Me Out 4/5 DLZ 4/5 Lover's Day 3/5 Overall Album 3.1
Their third album. Indie Rock. I don't know how I feel about this one either way. Was it captivating ? No. Was it awful ? No. The fifty minutes of the album came and went without me disliking it I suppose. I'd give it a 2.5 if I could, right down the middle. I'll round it up to a three for decent production.
I had heard of TV On The Radio but had never heard any of their music. This is an intriguing album, hopping from funky to post-rock and Cure-like moods. Three stars may well turn out four when I get to know this better. And I intend to. This sort of discovery is why I wanted to do this in the first place.
544/1001
I had heard of TV on the Radio but had never listened. I'm glad I finally have. But... while it's quite enjoyable, it's not four- or five-star material.
Really liked his voice and digging their sound, the list has made me a fan (3.5/5)
This was pretty good. When I read the words “indie rock” I shuddered a little, but there is far more substance and integrity to their music than describing them like that. One of the best things about this internet age is that we can listen for ourselves, and not be subjected to buzz words - and music journalism in general - which I’m grateful for. Good riddance. Anyway, for the fist time hearing TV On The Radio I enjoyed it. Vibrant and layered, interesting music. A worthy 3.
It’s not really my thing but I can hear that it’s quality
Super meh - dont understand why this is on the list
Always really liked Adebimpe's voice. TV on the Radio is probably the 2000s hipster band to beat in terms of how tethered to the era they are - even more than The Dirty Projectors. The Strokes transcend it a little but TV on the Radio is handcuffed to Daily Show appearances and prestige tv needle drops. There are worse claims to fame but I always wondered where they went. Favorite Tracks: Dancing Choose, Family Shoes, Red Dress, DLZ
I've listen to this band before but never listened to a whole album. It kind of felt like an American version of Bloc Party to me from what i heard prior. But when i started listening they had a very interesting and unique sound. DLZ is the track I heard before and is a really cool track and still hits hard. The fact that 98 000 people have listened to the 4min of silence on the bonus edition really really blows my mind... my entire music catalogue doesn't reach that high... is my music less listenable than silence...
I only know "Wolf Like Me", but I do love that song. Excited to dive in. churning drums, and falsetto I expected, but used to build a far different experience I anticipated. I liked this album, but not sure I would ever put it on. It's interesting, and not like much I'm aware of from 2008.
First song sounds like bird bird bird bird is the word, idk kinda generic
not bad when i was listening, but looking back i cant remember anything about this album. clearly not very memorable
Good
Again, although I like it well enough, I don't really fully connect with TVOTR. I liked the second half of the album more than the first, with particular call outs for "Shout Me Out" and "DLZ"
its alright
Funky! Not bad but the vocals weren't my favorite. Instrumentals were super cool.
Huh. I thought I had a pretty good handle on TV on the Radio and knew what their whole deal was. I had them pegged in the a-bit-more-abrasive-than-and-not-as-good-as-the-yeah-yeah-yeahs zone. But this was a really solid and enjoyable album with some very decent songs on it. I am glad to have been proven wrong as to this band.
Ok
They bring some lovely, infectious energy...and then they bore me.
First few tracks did not do anything for me. But some of it grew on me and I ended up saving tracks 4 and 6 to my general playlist. Kind of an interesting fusion of sounds and styles.
I tried twice, but I couldn't find anything interesting about this album.
Not a fan of the vocals at all - kinda Prince-like but just... not good. Overall the music otherwise is fairly decent. Kinda funky, like the mix of electronic sounds and real instruments. Really mixed feelings overall, there weren't many songs that I liked every aspect of, but I also didn't hate any songs all the way through. I could happily have this album on as background in future but I don't think I'm sold on TV On The Radio based off this listen.
Run-of-the-mill indie rock, I'm not really a fan but it's pleasant enough, they experiment with a large instrumental variety which is pretty cool. I thought it sounded like a chiller, early Gorillaz at some points. I enjoyed the more animated moments such as Red Dress, where you can actually see the funky Prince influence. Overall though I just don't think there's much calling to me for future listens. I'm certain that there were more influential records than this in 2008! Standouts: Halfway Home • Crying • Family Tree • Red Dress
I really wanted to like this more, but it strikes me less as an album and more like a random collection of mildly related songs, none of which really struck me.
Very standard 2000s indie rock, nothing very memorable for me.
I loved their early albums. At first I wasn’t thrilled on this one but it grew on me.
Loved the other albums of them, but this was just alright. Didn't have a bad time listening, but it's really nothing to write home about.
This band has one great EP and one great album and this one is neither of those, so it was a nice throwback to the days when I wore skinny jeans but clearly a lesser work
Enjoyed it
Dear basketball
…I dunno. Is there something about this one I don’t get? I really want to love this band but most of the time they’re good but that’s about it. Enjoyable but forgettable I s’pose
I had never heard this album. Sonically, it's pretty good. The compositions are rather catchy, and I think the vocals are unique. Unfortunately, my interest stops there. I don't know anything about this band's other work, but this album feels creatively limited to me. The music is very straightforward electronic (indie?) pop, but that's it. Other than the vocals, there is nothing weird or challenging about the music. It sounded good, but I got bored with it pretty early on. Three stars.
This is not my favorite TVOTR album but it is still quite enjoyable. Starts out very strong but Peter’s out in the second half as it becomes less dancey.
One of those bands that I respect, and like, but don't love. This doesn't seem as inventive as Desperate Youth and I can't tell if it's better or worse for it. A head above your standard late 2000s indie stuff, but that doesn't really make it great.
A 3
Not for me.
I haven't heard of them before so this was fun to explore. It makes good background music but very little stood out. I'm curious what it is that drives their inclusion on this list. Fav Tracks: DLZ > Lover's Day > Family Tree Current Fav Album: Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd (#11/1089)
Indie rock with a little funk thrown in. That funk helps it rise above the level of bog standard. Unfortunately it doesn't show up in every song. Favorite track: DLZ
An obvious 3.
Heisenberg
Indie!
Don't think I could tell you a single thing about any of the songs on here. There was some sonically interesting production choices I guess (I like the drums on Shout Me Out) and the occasional good line but most of it felt like boring indie rock with an equally uninteresting vocalist. Last 2 tracks probably bumped it up to a low 3
Highlights Family Tree Red Dress Love Dog DLZ I got excited seeing experimental rock in this artists genres but it turns out this was their less experimental album. Feel like it could have been so much more. It did grow on me towards the end, the singer can have quite a big voice and the songs that lean into that with big instrumentation are really good. 3
Very smooth, very nice. It was an enjoyable listen throughout. I wouldn't say it pushed too many boundaries, but I was happy listening to it. And that's important.
I stopped after return to cookie mountain and should not have
Mellow yet interesting. I’d listen again without complaining but it’s not a special album.
The strings on this album are great. The songs are hit and miss with me, I don’t love the vocals unless they’re in that fun punk kind of way. The back half of the album was better, maybe that’s because I got used to the sound and it grew on me? I’ll have to try again with this one.
Decent listen, difficult one to rate but its probably 3.5 rounded down to a 3
I liked this a lot but it did like all these albums start to dwindle towards the end. Family Tree was great, surprised it’s not more popular in the YouTube montage world. 3.5 rounded down
A little unique, but nothing stood out.
I once heard this described as "the best rock album of the 21st century so far." And don't get me wrong, I like this album, there's definitely nothing wrong with it, but I just don't think that it's anywhere near unique or daring enough for a title that big.
I have a feeling this one had some depth to it and probably needs more than one listen to enjoy it fully.
64/100. It has moments of brilliance, but as a full project, I think their strongest work exists elsewhere in their discography. A decent listen, but not their peak.
No me convenció. Muy lineal
We have gorillaz at home Gorillaz at home:
There’s a lot of cool stuff here, but the way it’s all put together makes it sort of indescribable. It’s alright.
This is a fun album. The only way I can describe it is "Nine Inch Nails" but fun and happy. The band uses loops - lots of loops! But, they are always tasteful, interesting, and used in service to the music, never in place of it. The loops add degrees of texure where needed to best effect. While this music is largely electronic and "locked to the grid" it still manages to stay funky. Best examples are "Golden Age," "Red Dress," and my favorite "Crying." Real guitars and organic instruments mix it up with the synths. The album features a variety of styles: Dance ("Dancing Choose"), Ballads ("Family Tree"), and even a Pop Anthem ("Lover's Day"). A good listen.
Listening to this, I was thinking about why I've never really listened to their music. I think it's the name. The band name is stupid. But that's a bad reason to not give something a chance, so I listened. There's a couple tracks on here that I love, but I don't get the hype. This was apparently album of the year among pitchfork readers back in the heyday of when pitchfork mattered. And this does exist in a pitchfork sweetspot, somewhere at the intersection of arty and pop, but I don't think it does either really well. Is it kind of interesting? Yes. Is it a little pop-y in a good way? Absolutely. But there's nothing truly experimental here, and as pop it hasn't aged especially well. It's possible this would grow on me with more listning, but othe of the gate, nearly twenty years after release, meh.
I have fond memories of this record, in the epicentre of the indie rock revolution. It felt part of a movement, and I felt a part of it too. Eclectic as it it is, it's consistent with New York's tradition of audacious iconoclasts; it makes me think of Battles, or recently, Geese. Warm though my memories are, I'm not certain that it holds together all that well. Zagging, instead of zigging, wears out its welcome. Listening to it feels like I'm allowing for the strangeness of these songs out of responsibility, because I like strange things because art. But this record runs the risk of trying too hard, I think. Halfway Home is a dramatic bit of post-industrial; I was excited to hear it again. Family Tree is boring as shit and I never liked it. Side B tries a little less hard and fares better for it. Love Dog has a good shouty hook and succeeds as being restrained. Similarly Shouted Out. Most of the following tracks. That part is a more linear, maximalist, New York record. But admittedly also more forgettable. Being weird is fine when it comes together. I'm tempted be cynical and say they definitely hit that on their first record, and chased that ever since. But I guess that's what a New York hipster would have said in the late aughts.
Actually not too bad when they’re not trying to seek medical attention by making music. Family tree, red dress all good melodies. They can make some good music with some polishing. Also reminds me of Brian Eno which I liked and didn’t like for the same reason.
Eh, it’s alright. I was grooving to a couple songs but some were just a little too outside the box for me. I can see the appeal for some background music though.
5.5/10
This is a solid album from a band I'd never heard of. Definitely a cool sound and aggregation of different influences going into this one. Enjoyable for sure.
Pretty good. Golden Age really caught me off guard. Had no idea it wasn’t a Phish tune.
One of the more bearable of the entries on this list, and my favorite of their albums. If you were going to include anything from this band, I think this is definitely the one. Personally I would remove their debut album DESPERATE YOUTHS, BLOODTHIRSTY BABES from the list. They absolutely nail their influences in these songs. Perhaps a bit too much on the nose for some, but personally I do think this was one of the better albums from the naughties. You can hear the David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Brian Eno, and Talking Heads influences. Faves: "Golden Age" and "DLZ" I saw them live when they toured with Nine Inch Nails and if you thought their live performances might sound a bit more meaty and gritty then you would be mistaken. They sound almost exactly like what they do on the album. I was also puzzled by the number of people who think that Phish wrote "Golden Age". It is actually the other way around. Phish covered TV on the Radio's "Golden Age".
I thought these songs were MGMT but other than that it was ok.
Arcade Fire for Hamilton fans? is this anything? i dont know
helt ok.
I enjoy TV on the Radio's sound, but the album was repetitive after about half way through.
I had heard two songs from this album before (DLZ and Love Dog) and enjoyed them, so I was happy to get this album and hear more from the band. Unfortunately, the rest of the album didn’t really click with me; it feels like it’s missing something to elevate it to being “good.” It’s not bad, and there are things to like, but it feels disappointingly underdeveloped. It was fine.
I was really into Cookie Mountain but had already tuned out by this one. Morning stand out here to my 2025 ears.
Cool solid album. Nothing I’m getting into all the time but appreciate it for what it is, got a few songs I really enjoyed. 3 stars
Mostly enjoyed the songs I already knew.
Mate what do you think science has been trying to do you prick. Average 2000s music I guess. Nothing to write home about. Specific rating - 3.2 Fav song -DLZ Least fav- stork and owl
Trea
I thought this sounded awfully modern for an 80s band, then I checked the date (I guess I was thinking of Television?). I thought this vacillated between pretty cool and swings that just didn’t work (the “rapping” parts especially suck). Overall thought it was interesting and more worked than didn’t.
3.3 I thought "wolf like me" was on this album but I guess I was wrong. That song is a burner. I think I've listened to this album a few times over the years as I remember being critically acclaimed and liking a couple of the bands songs. Those listens didnt stick and I dont think this one will either. A few songs sounded like Bowie and I liked DLZ
Something a bit different, inoffensive but I couldn't get into it.
DLZ is catchy, and I'd listen to this album again. However, overall, I'd say its a mid-tier album.
Ehhhh; it’s ok.
funky
I was very fond of TV on the Radio at the time, but these days they feel like a song band more than an album band for me. It was good to revisit some old faves - (Lover's Day 😘)
Some decent stuff, not too memorable. 3 stars
This album wasn’t bad by any means. But they sound like a band you’d hear live and think “wow, these guys are amazing!” So you buy their CD at the show, listen to it literally one time, and then it just lives in your car until you need some quick cash and you sell some of your CDs.
Decent. I knew DLZ from Breaking Bad. I have nothing else to say
Quite a crunchy album
I spent the whole time trying to decide if this was boring or beautiful. Sometimes I got into it, other times it sounded bland and fake deep. I did find myself bopping along so I'll take it and go straight down the middle
Nice mixture of funk and soul and Indie-pop. It's not life-changing or anything. But few albums are.
In my quest to figure out if these guys were British because, why not. I found that (a) they aren’t a predominantly white band (b) they look like Living Color and (c) I was really confused as to how they have over 1 million listeners since I had not heard of them before. This is decent enough, slightly weird crossing back and forth between pop, rock and alternative.
Good! Sounds like if Prince, Bowie, and Andre 3000 formed a band. But the influences are a little two obvious & the Art Rock-iness is a little too much for me. A 3, but could be a 4 on another listen.
It’s OK
Having never heard of this band, I found the album a bit unusual, but I wasn't repelled.
A decent indie rock example, but no real standouts.
This is fine alt rock, I'm not sure it's TVotR's best. 3*
Tough to watch TV on the Radio but the band sounds pretty good. Interesting alt-rock pop. The B-Side of Dear Science is better than A with "DLR" taking top track spot. Continued through the bonus tracks and shouldn't have. Spotify has the "Non-Musical Silence" track (if it even is one) which is so hipster that I almost gave up on the band. "Dear Science, please start solving problems and curing diseases or shut the fuck up" is pretty great from Dave so I'll give this one 3.11 stars.
I've heard of TV On The Radio in passing over the years. They've never had a breakout hit to my knowledge so I never gave them a shot previously. Dear Science was a nice little indie rock entry that mixed it up a bit. Some decent arrangements and variance throughout the album. Nothing wowed me, but there was a handful of songs I liked enough that I'll probably check out some of their top songs and see if they have anything else to offer. Even if they don't have their place in music history I'd take entries like this of somewhat unknown contemporary indie acts over outdated albums or more run of the mill britpop acts. 3.02 stars
point2.
I enjoyed the other TV On The Radio album on this list, but Dear Science didn't really do much for me. It's pleasant enough, but not much more
An indie album if i ever heard one , dear science has a lot of interesting moments and genre fluidity while keeping a level of some (hit and miss ) chaos
Rv
TV On The Radio feels like one of the most "2000s Pitchfork" bands ever to me, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Bad rep they have now aside, Pitchfork did have pretty good taste during a certain period and I do think of TV On The Radio as a "good" band. I think maybe because their particular take on the indie sound seems to exemplify everything the publication gravitated towards, as well as the kind of unique space in the public consciousness TV On The Radio seem to occupy. They feel tangential to the more "proper" 2000's indie pop scene, ending up somewhere similar, but seemingly coming from a slightly different world. TV On The Radio seemed to have their roots in the worlds of art rock, post-punk, soul, and to an extent, electronica. And this sound netted them a certain level of success, but I don't think I'd say they ever had a real hit or anything. In the past, I've enjoyed Return To Cookie Mountain, and Dear Science has been on my to-do list for a while. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but your mileage most likely depends on your amount of goodwill towards indie generally. I will say that I think Cookie Mountain was more willing to stake itself in the fuzzier woodlands of TVOTR's sound, while Dear Science is pared back to the core of their sound, leaving the weirdest edges of the band's sound behind. The result is a more focused sounding album that I do think is a little less interesting for it. However, the songwriting feels a little more front and center, and these are some really good tracks. Halfway Home, Dancing Choose, Stork & Owl, Red Dress, and DLZ are some of the best songs here. A lot of the songs here have a really interesting sense of momentum, and the performances are really good across the board. I especially enjoy the vocal performances, Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone both have unique stylings and great energy. And the sounds on these songs are a good representation of the sounds across this album. There is post-punky guitar, electronic percussion, think synthwork, and it's rounded out with flourishes from violin, horns and more. As I mentioned, if you enjoy indie, check this out, it's really strong, but I don't think it's gonna make the genre click with skeptics. And while I did enjoy this, I get to sense this has more to give, so I definitely see myself coming back to Dear Science.
Alright. Nothing much to say about the music. The cover, though, is dreadful. It seems like it was made on Canva for an album a family would put together for Christmas.
That late 2000s indie creative writing with elements of funk and rock.
Pretty middle of the road album. Maybe it should be 2 stars instead.
Interesting
This reminded me of Arcade Fire, but in a not so expensive to see live kinda way.
Musically quite hard to follow – and not because it's complicated, but rather because it's a bit haphazardly composed. There isn't much in the way of catchiness or hooks, though I'll give the vocal (particularly in more melodic songs like Dancing Choose) props for trying. Notably though, other tracks like Stork & Owl completely throw aside the idea of an enjoyable or technically good vocal in favour of... experimentation? Not sure. Don't like it. TV On The Radio is like a group version of Bowie but with zero vocal control. It's a shame, because the instrument arrangements are generally fantastic. Love Dog ends up being a better version of Stork & Owl because it takes a similar instrument texture and places decent singing on top of it. Golden Age is also great: it sounds straight off the better part of Young Americans, with a couple of melodic lines in the instrumental poached from the 1975 record. It has to be the best song here. DLZ is not nearly as good as Golden Age despite being more popular. I'm not a fan of the quote that's this album's namesake: "Dear Science, please start solving problems and curing diseases or shut the fuck up." Not sure what exactly this is responding to – there weren't any huge notable science controversies in 2007 or 2008 – so presumably it's just a general anti-science sentiment. Very uncool. What's cooler is that (at least on the face of it) the songs themselves don't appear to be anti-science. Check out some of the sweet lyrics on DLZ: "This is beginning to feel like the long winded blues of the never / Static explosion devoted to crushing the broken and shoving their souls to ghost / Eternalised, objectified, you set your sights so high / But this is beginning to feel like the bolt busted loose from the lever." It's very pessimistic, possibly inspired by (and improving upon) Muse's early-2000s poetry. The style isn't (post-)alt but the lyrics definitely are. 3/5 Key tracks: Dancing Choose, Golden Age, Love Dog
This probably had a timeless sound for all of maybe 4 years before it became incredibly dated. You couldn’t make this before about 2006, and you couldn’t make this after about 2014. Now, I’m all-for that late 2000s / early 2010s indie rock, indie folk, indie whatever-the-fuck, but this is the worse side of the coin. An energetic but ultimately bland sound that matches the honestly terrible album cover. Seriously, what the fuck were they thinking with that album cover? It’s awful. Don’t judge a book by its cover though, right? Wrong. The music here may not be as laughably shit as the album cover, but it is laughably mediocre. That is, until the last four-or-so tracks, which are for the most part just mediocre. Not laughably so. I wanted to like a track besides DLZ, clearly the most popular based on its Spotify streams, but no. It’s most certainly the standout. But being the standout track here isn’t much to write home about.
It was fine, no real stand out tracks but it was good music
6/10
3/5. Solid. Nothing I especially disliked but also nothing I especially liked. Overall just solid.
I appreciate the revisit to this band! Solid sonic experience!
I dunno if I liked this album or not. It seemed as if some songs I liked, some I didn't, then I think that some of the songs I didn't liked had a beat switch in the middle that I liked. It was kinda confusing in a good way. But I guess the album was okay, maybe I'll listen to it again in the future to have a better feeling with it, but I don't think my opinion on this will change.
Good stuff: not my personal favorite of theirs, but still solid
i’m honestly not sure how i feel about this one. it definitely sounds interesting, it sounds like an album that would be on this list, but I’m not sure if that necessarily draws me in! i liked golden age, the combo of orchestral horns + strings plus two layers of electric synthy staticky bass. a bit reminiscent of the national in the drumming at the beginning of the album, a bit of bon iver on family tree. red dress went in a completely different direction, the funk was unexpected. liked the tempo increase in shout me out. overall… Interesting album, listened to it twice, but not adding to my library
The Good: we know we are not going to get bored… The Bad: turns out that there’s nothing worth watching on the TV or hearing on the radio… The Ugly: still not understanding what science has to do with this! Bland… Or, blink and miss it… That’s the best way to describe the music. It’s not bad, but it’s just not there… So, I am reviewing an album that I played twice back to back and I can’t recall the experience… and that’s not the first time it’s happened to me during this here 1001 list. I do wish we could score on a 10 base, as this album isn’t 2*, but kind of isn’t 3* either. Guess it’s sticking to the trend it set for me with just not being anything...
Hadn’t heard of this band before but I thought they were not too bad. Good alt rock vibe.
i liked it, a decent entry into the mid-2000s/2010s indie rock pantheon
Dear Science won't blow anyone's mind, but it's fun enough.
Very uneventful
Favorite Track: Crying
TVOTR’s first 2 LPs didn’t really do that much for me aside from a few incredible standout points (Wolf, Lover, Wrong Way). Basically I just kept returning to Young Liars, the only thing I’ve ever enjoyed front-to-back by Adebimpe and Sitek. So, it was with some surprise that Dear Science was one of my favourite albums of 2008, ever present in the disc changer/iPod. I’m not sure it has stood up well over time, but the highlights for me - Crying, Golden Age, DLZ - still grab me. Whatever they had here didn’t extend to subsequent efforts, but this pop-tilt really suited them well.
I like I’d but I also didn’t like it. A conflicted 3/5
Oh my Science, the band name is so on point!
Three great surprise and the rest mid
For an album with a great production, solid performances and a lot of details and ambition in the instrumentation, it didn't grab my attention in any of the three times I listened to it. What I can say is that I found this record to be, generally, way more consistent than the other one, 'Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes', featured in this list. My favourite songs are: 'Family tree', with a rather melancholic ending. 'Shout me out' because of the high pace that make it quite energetic. 'DLZ' for being the catchiest song. I don't have anything else to add. A decent album.
Interesting combination of genres, decent album to listen to but not something that I will return to in the future.
Not bad.
TV On The Radio have always been in my periphery but never were a band I really got a chance to sink my teeth into, which is a shame because they sound very cool. At times they remind me of Spoon (a band I love), and I think the vocalist has a super cool voice. This album I feel like is a nice representation of their sound, and it's got one of their bigger songs on it "DLZ". It's a nice 3.3 for me.
6/10 Favorite: Halfway Home
a mix of late electro new wave and 90s alternative
It's OK. Kinda has Coldplay vibes but feels uninspired. Wouldn't recommend.
I thought this was Bon Iver for half of the album, but it was not, and he was not involved at all from what I can tell. I did generally like the album, but I couldn't fully immerse myself so it's a 3 not a 4.
I wanted to enjoy this more than I did. It was fine. Busy, congested, a bit tiring to have on, but fine. I think they would be better if they removed about 40% of the noise in each track. By that I mean less instruments, less notes, focus on the core of what they are trying to play. As it stands, it's a bit of a muddled mess that just bounces off the walls and becomes pink noise.
Ok
As anticipated, this is not my style in any way, and it never has been. Still, this is a lot better than I expected. Kind of like an indie rock version of At the Drive-In, without any of the hardcore influence and more new wave and post-punk.That doesn’t make it my thing by any means, but it made me tolerate it more than I thought I would. Doesn’t save it from being a rather boring dredge overall, though, and I will barely remember a single note off of it 6 months from now. Proof that the original end of this list really suffered from mid-2000s indie mag overhype. Maybe not bad, but 2005 ephemera that wouldn’t last.
Sounds good but too smooth and unsurprising, lacking edge 3.2
