Reviews (page 4 of 13)

I bought this on vinyl in 1972. As I recollect at that time I was not a big Neil Young fan but there was a lot of chatter in the music press of how good the album was. I rated it an OK album then. The standout track for me was A Man Needs A Maid which I still think is a beautiful and melancholy song but I wasn’t exactly keen on the Country music feel on a lot of the tracks. It is a while since I listened to the album in full so this arriving on my list was a welcome chance to do so. I did this in bed listening on headphones and was totally enchanted. It was like listening to the album anew. Gone has my apparent dislike of the Country music element and in fact I think it now enhances the album. Loved it from start to finish. 5/5 27/5/24

Well, I’m already familiar with Mr. Young as a prolific singer-songwriter. I’ve also heard “Heart of Gold”, “Old Man” and “The Needle and the Damage Done” before sitting down for this album. Needless to say, the rest of Harvest is just as good as those three if not more. This is the kind of tightly constructed, well-written folk rock you’d expect from Neil Young, with a few surprises such as the symphony orchestra accompaniment on “A Man Needs a Maid” and “There’s a World”. There’s also a fair amount of electric rockers with “Alabama” and the closing waltz “Words”. Speaking on the former, I understand Neil has not looked fondly at “Alabama” with how the lyrics might not have been fully thought out, but I personally feel it’s aged better than the response we got from Lynyrd Skynyrd. I can see why Harvest is considered Neil Young’s signature album. This is exceptional.

love this, impeccable

Excellent album - the last two tracks are soooo good.

Love love love! This is my favorite Neil Young album, and has always been one of my favorite albums ever. So many great songs.

I like Neil Young, and this is one of his more enjoyable albums.

Heart of Gold and Old Man alone makes this a 4 star album. NY solo is much better than CSNY and Crazy Horse.

Top 5 Neil studio album

Truly an undeniable classic album. My favorite Meil Young song has always been A Man Needs A Maid (followed by Powderfinger as a very close 2nd) but every song is amazing on this album. Heart of Gold, Old Man, and The Needle and the Damage Done are flat out three of the best songs ever written- yeah, I said it! 5 stars without a doubt.

And for the third artist to give me four albums, we have Neil Young with the album Harvest. I've liked the Neil Young albums I've gotten so far, but unlike the other members of the 4-album club (which as of right now is comprised of Bob Dylan and the Beatles), none of his albums have yet to cross into 5 star territory. However, if there's any album of his that can do it, it's probably Harvest. I mean, it's his best-selling album, many have called it his best album, and it even got a JoJo stand named after it! It passes all of the tests for if the album deserves to be on the list or not. So, does the album live up to the hype? Yes. Yes it does. Neil's singing is still good. The instrumental sound in this album is great. It's simple, but very pleasant. What elevates this album to a whole new level for me is the songwriting. Between the four albums of his I've listened to now, the songwriting is absolutely at its peak in this album. The tone of the whole album is just top-notch. Do I feel like finally giving Neil Young a 5 star rating? Yep. This is it. 5/5.

I’ll admit I never heard anything besides Old Man and Heart of Gold before this venture. It was a good first listen.

Love this album. Probably my favorite “version” of Neil; he’s such a chameleon with the type of music he’s played over the years. Earnest and yearning themes from such a young man. Guitar work on acoustic cuts and the backing band and singers are my highlights, as well as Neil’s songwriting. Almost theatrical on the orchestral cuts which was a nice surprise, having really only known the hits. He leveraged his friends well; love hearing Linda Ronstadt cut through on the background vocals of “Heart of Gold” where you can’t miss her voice; so nice. And love how Neil unintentionally pissed off Lynyrd Skynrd with “Alabama” inspiring them to write “Sweet Home Alabama” in a musical retort. Art pushing art! The classic cuts and universal themes that resonate to this day push it to top tier for me.

Oh wow, what did I just hear? When I started collecting vinyl, I jokingly wished I liked certain artists more because their albums were so well regarded on LP. Neil Young is at the top of that list. But I had never heard this masterpiece before. And it's odd too because I am very familiar with the singles from this album, Old Man, Heart of Gold, Needle and the Damage Done. I've never considered myself a Young fan, but, of course, these tracks are canon classic rock, and I always thought they were great. What's unfortunate is that I wasn't aware that they were from this album or that they even were from the same album. When listened to together as part of a full album project, their magic opens up. I've only experienced this one other time, with Marvin Gaye's What's Goin On, and while Harvest didn't quite capture my heart the way that album did, it's still a masterpiece that I plan to get on vinyl and listen to over and over. Five stars.

To give a love You've gotta live a love I really need a maid.

This was great, the emotions hit home, especially in the second half. More interesting than I'd expect from what seemed like a "country" album. Another one that I was raised listening to songs from so also pushes it up a bit.

Neil Young is a walking contradiction: one of our loudest rockers is also one of our quietest, most introspective tune smiths. Sometimes he does both on one record. This time, he leans into the introspection, delivering some of the finest , most enduring songs of his career. “Heart of Gold” and “Old Man” are instant classics. The rest is a mix of beautiful and haunting, with some of the best playing from top notch musical collaborators.

hands down Neil's best album. my favorite of his songs are on here, Old Man, Heart of Gold and The Needle and the Damage Done are all classics.

Recorded in a barn with a broken back, Harvest somehow still feels like comfort food. We played this LP about seven million times back on 130 College Ave—so it’s less an album now and more a permanent room in my memory.

Neil’s best album! Wish he could still write this well)

One of the greatest artists of all time. Looking forward to seeing NY and Crazy Horse in Chicago!!!

damn good album

I don’t need to listen to this because I’ve listened to it before. But I will because it’s 5/5 thank you algorithm.

The album that first got me into Neil Young. Although he's amazing at rocking out as well, Harvest is such a classic. It feels a little dismissive to call it Folk Rock, it does lean into that but there are other elements that elevate the sound beyond acoustic guitars and harmonicas. the strings on A Man Needs A Maid are particularly beautiful, and electric guitars on Alabama fit the tone of the song perfectly. His lyrics are incredible, he has something to say on all these tracks, be it a political message or something more inward looking. I also like his voice, it seems a little polarising but it evokes the emotion of each song perfectly whether that be sadness, anger or whatever else. Brilliant

High and haunted voice Coos folk songs powerfully Harmonica rocks

A man needs to edit one song off the album

The maid song deserves criticism but I’m going to use this opportunity to call out a later album by him titled “Harvest Moon” … like, try harder?

Heart of Gold, was für ein Klassiker. Auch sonst gefällt das Album durch die akustische, entspannte Musik.

One of my all time favorite albums

Love Neil and love this album even though the purists would say it was a sellout. Some classic rockers, and two of the best introspective acoustic songs in Neil's gigantic catalog makes this an easy five star album for me. It sounds so frickin' good...like you are sitting in the room with the musicians.

Terrific. I think I’d listened before but I listen to a lot of the Live at Massey Hall album and it was a good reminder of how wonderful the album tracks are too.

love neil young, makes me think of my mum and dad. easy listening which can’t be faulted. would listen again obviously.

I think it was Linda Ronstadt, who sang on this album, who described Neil Young as "a sketch artist" and that's a really apt description. His songs seem like fragments of images and ideas distilled and lifted from longer stories. Many of them are eminently singable and have stood the test of time in cover versions and campfires. Needle, Heart of Gold, Old Man... Between the solo acoustic, the grunge blues jam track, the orchestral backing and the intimate band sound, this album captures all of Neil Young's personalities and traits. Wistful vocals, always reaching for the nostalgic turn, for this idea that a better situation exists just out of reach, the simple riffs, the dirty guitar tone. Neil Young made this album and then just kept making it, really.

Great album - some of the lyrical themes seem a little dated, maybe, and Young's voice is, clearly, an unusual instrument, but this is packed with quality start to finish.

Classic.

I really enjoyed this, I had always been resistant to Neil young just because I felt it was for old people. This was fantastic.

Great track, really took me back to working in the butchers. Enjoy all of the vocals and guitar throughout

Synonymous with singer song writer and for good reason. Dude's smooth and mellow delivery is legendary. Great album.

was not expecting there to be songs with full orchestras on them. Thank you Neil!

Didn't listen because Neil's not on Spotify anymore, but this is one of my favorite albums. 10 / 5.

Classic

A Man Needs a Maid en There's a World zijn twee moeilijke nummers waar ik echt aan heb moeten wennen. 9/10 Highlights Out on the Weekend Heart of Gold Alabama Needle and the Damage Done

Probably the easiest listening of my all time favourites. Geffen Folk Rock sounds like anathema to me, but of course Neil’s incredible talent for being shonky but persuasive gives this album his usual underlying grit. Tuneful, thoughtful, tragic. His best.

What a treat of the album. Always been a casual fan of Neil Young but this is my third album of his from this list so far and I'm becoming a big fan of his.

O esplendor da força das melodias envolventes com a delicadeza das composições e execuções que devem ser ouvidas sempre.

Harvest is good. Finally on Spotify. Heart of Gold is such a classic, and I also like the title track, and Old Man. Absolutely fantastic songwriting, and his wailing compliments the whole thing.

I'm sorry this album isn't on Spotify. It's one of my favorites and Neil Young is also one of my favorite artists. Classic album and it is a must-hear. There are some tracks on here that are probably a bit overblown (A Man Needs a Maid), but it's very hard to knock the album when 8 of the 10 tracks are fantastic and Neil Young loves trying new and different sounds every time he comes out with an album.

Synonymous with singer song writer and for good reason. Dude's smooth and mellow delivery is legendary. Great album.

No Neil Diamond, but this album had a heart of gold 4/5

A near perfect album.

Amazing!

10/10 great fucking album

Beautiful

Already a favorite. Very relaxing "sit on the porch" kinda vibe.

Neil Young wasn't even 30 when he recorded this album. Wise beyond his years, and a genius storyteller. This Canadian figured out America in a way that America still hasn't.

Top notch. 4.5

for me NY is the master of capturing my attention without my knowing exactly why. i love this “middle of the road” album even though my faves are the “ditch trilogy”. the layering of the rough guitar sounds with simple rhythm backing and soaring pedal steel is magical.

We love a stone cold classic on a Friday! What else can I say about this album that hasn’t already been said?

As the old joke goes, I played this so much on vinyl back in the day it destroyed the record: you should see the needle and the damage done. Anyway, it's the album that got me into Neil Young, and still my favourite.

This is one of my favorite albums. It sounds great, and it’s bonkers!

good ol' Canadiana. Great listening. Love the harmonica.

stone cold classic

Great album.

Young spends much of this album yearning for love and fulfilling relationships amid a life of fame, success, and empty pleasure. And it makes for pretty damn good music. Fav Tracks: Out on the Weekend, Harvest, A Man Needs a Maid, Heart of Gold, Old Man, Alabama, Words (Between the Lines of Age) Least Fav Track: There's a World 10/10

Other than live albums and compilations, this is probably the strongest Neil Young album out there. There's really not a single bad track on it. Yes, even the slightly dodgy song about maids is a good one in my books. I understand that some people don't like Neil Young's voice and there is a bit of a downtempo theme to most of the songs. However, I adore Neil's voice and also the slightly melancholy feel to many of the songs. This really is as close to perfection as I think is possible; definitely one of the most important folk rock albums ever made. If I could give this a six then I would, but I'll have to settle with a five.

Yet another album I love from Neil that I'll just have to put on at home outside of any streaming context. Highlights: Heart of Gold, Are You Ready for the Country, Old Man, Alabama, The Needle and the Damage Done.

Really enjoyed this albim

Maybe I’m going soft with my reviews but this one seemed like a fiver

Amazing album

This is quite simply one of the best albums I’ve ever listened to. I can’t believe I haven’t given Neil Young the attention he deserves. Every single song on here was absolutely beautiful and completely melancholic. 10/10 will not shut up about this for a while.

Exceptional album. Really enjoy this one and have listened before.

All around solid classic rock album. Sucks he took his music off of Spotify though

There is such a raw tenderness in Neil Young’s vocals like a man amazed by how overwhelming it all is and his voice is almost cracking and breaking from being in awe

If there ever was a soundtrack to my youth, this is it.

Loved revisiting Neil Young early in this list.

no esta en spotify

Beautiful record - my favourite Neil Young album.

One of the quintessential albums by Neil Young. Most others pale in comparison.

I really enjoyed this one. I wasn't so big on CSN, but I do love me some Y.

There are a couple songs I don’t like, but the ones I do are brilliant enough to make up for them.

Great album!

Ja man mooi Neil young is wss wel de oudst klinkende twintiger ooit

Look man, sometimes these albums don’t really need reviews. I’m not saying critics always got it right, but we have 52 years of evidence saying this is one of the greatest albums of all time and I think they nailed it in one.

Man, I love Neil Young. His vocals suck, his guitar work sucks, and his band is sloppy, but something about all of the elements together is pure folk magic. The poetry and melodies are timeless, beautiful storytelling, backed by some of greatest singer-songwriters of the generation. My dad introduced my to Neil Young when I was young, so this album will always have a place in my heart. Stand out tracks include: “Heart of Gold”, “Old Man”, “Alabama”, “Needle and the Damage Done”, and “Words”.

Really wish he would put his music back on Spotify

Forgot how good this album was

Neil at his best. I wore the grooves out of this CD in the late 90s.

Harvest moon is my wedding song

All time classic

One of my favorites, a lovely record through and through. Perfect for crooning and yearning

Loved “Are You Ready for the Country?”, especially the guitars in it.

sadly not on spotify :')

Growing a serious appreciation for this guy. I've always liked this album but it's another one that hits differently as I'm older and I would easily rank it alongside On The Beach. I really like the ambition here even if it feels a bit strange in places. Specifically, 'A Man Needs a Maid' and 'There's a World' are the kind of songs I would like to know more about and what was going on at the time that put them together. Really, the whole album seems to make itself painfully obvious about a rich story and narrative and it does a great job of sucking you in while keeping things very concise. Sad, but in a good contemplative way.

Excellent album. Multiple hits, great guitar tones, awesome song writing

I know this album very well but it’s been a long time since I listened to the whole album. I always loved this album and still do. Glad I listened again after so many years.

Still not on Spotify - which weirdly meant I was probably more focused on listening, since I wasn't driving or reading while listening to YouTube. A wonderful album, probably my favourite of his, with at least three stone cold classics and, in Old Man, one of my favourite songs from the "album era". Reading about Alabama also led me (through a classic wiki-dive, but on genius.com) to be reminded of this song: https://open.spotify.com/track/1STSziov35uhw9dnnxh92g?si=MG4x0jqOSmiJ9BEd4STkoQ and a few others from the same album, which is always a good thing anyway, and gives context to the legacy of that song and Southern Man.

A classic!

One of my top 10 albums!!

Love Neil Young. Saw him in concert. Amazing!!!!

another neil young album! i really liked the first one i listened to, and surprise surprise i like this one too. compared to the sometimes melancholy feel of the first one, this one feels, while not OVERLY cheerful just a tad more positive in terms of mood, swapping that pre-grunge sound for more of the humble and hunky-dory country... according to an interview it's a bit calmer due to neil unfortunately hurting his back; he couldn't stand up and perform during that time. very glad he was able to pull through and still make some beautiful songs despite his condition.

Fuck off it’s one of my all time favorite albums.

Ganz großes Tennis

Nice album full of amazing songs from the legendary songwriter. 4.9/5 Fav: “Are You Ready For The Country” Least Fav: I have none.

Super....mega!

I've only ever listened to the top 40 hits from this album. It's really so much more country than I remember. I was 7 when this came out and didn't hear it until I was in college. Went down a rabbit hole and now have to watch the Harvest Time documentary.

The one and only - milestone! "I hope Neil Young will remember ..." had to be earned ;-)

Not available on spotify

Before I started this project I really underappreciated Neil Young. Everything I've heard of his is solid.

Groundbreaking? Not sure but like the play on words. I bet the hardest song for him to sing was only 2:03 long. Reliving losing your friend to such a terrible drug has got to be hard.

Harvest is at times incredibly simple and other so huge. Young’s melodies so strong, simple and unique. He mixed his classic Neil Young electric guitar in with his unique acoustic playing style and adds in grand strings on songs like A Man Needs a Maid. Heart of Gold, Old Man and The Needle and the Damage Done are all masterpieces 9.0/10

"Harvest by Neil Young is like a musical crop yielding a harvest of quirky brilliance. It's the only album where you can simultaneously sway to the tunes and contemplate the deep, philosophical implications of the harmonica. It's so good that even scarecrows would ditch their posts to two-step in the fields. Neil Young didn't just plant seeds with this album; he cultivated a garden of musical hilarity that leaves you wondering if your ears just experienced a musical harvest festival.

Neben dem Ohrwurm Heart of Gold gibt es noch viele andere wunderbare Stücke auf diesem Album. Besonders toll die mit Sinfonieorchester. Beglückendes Wiederhören.

Perfect

One of those albums that’s just as good as, if not better than, its reputation suggests. A sweeping collection of songs that lay bare the heart and mind of their author.

No question-his best album. And one of my top 10 of all time.

I went through RS top 500 albums in 2020 including the 7 Neil Young albums on the list. While I had previously loved some of his songs, going through his best albums gave me a new appreciation for him, which quickly led to an obsession. He was the biggest and best surprise of the entire list. Bought several of his records after that and went on an intense binge (maybe driven by covid loneliness) and listened to his entire catalogue (30+ albums) - They're all good. 'Harvest' is the perfect album to start with. Not my favorite NY album, maybe not even in my top 5, but one of his most generally loved. Perfect opener with "Out on the Weekend" and then each track builds, not a dud on here - highlights are the hits, + "Alabama" "Harvest" "Man Needs a Made" "Needle" "Words". . Got to see Neil Young for the first time this year and he played 'Heart of Gold' a very special moment for me - right after a surprise appearance by Bob Dylan and warming up for Willie Nelson. The best part...this is just the tip of the ice berg.

I had to go to YouTube to listen but it was worth it. This album is fantastic.

A fucking beautiful album that I need to get a physical copy of asap cause those youtube ads are an absolute killer

I discovered this album very late in time, but it amazes me how fresh it sounds. Really brings you to a landscape both physically and emotionally.

Classic in every way. Maybe the strings were a little overdone on There's A World and A Man Needs A Maid, but I can forgive the indulgence. Hard to be objective when it's been in my listening rotation 30+ years.

A classic!

Despite the best efforts of this album generator project already feeding me all three albums of the "ditch" trilogy, I've not listened to the breadth of Neil Young's catalog. I suspect Harvest might be the best of the bunch. It's an incredible album.

Found this recent review about *Harvest* on this app: "If you don't like this album then you don't like Neil Young. If you like Neil Young this is about as good as it gets. 5/5." Yep. Let me double down on that... I love *many* albums by the loner: "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere", "After the Gold Rush", "Tonight's The Night", "Rust Never Sleeps", "Chrome Dreams", "Le Noise"... Some of Neil Young's fans will have you believe that only ONE of these records is his true masterpieces. Well, they don't say that about "Le Noise", but it's certainly my favorite *underrated* album by him--with *Trans* not so far behind, oddly enough... Everytime those fans say something like this, I kinda agree. Or I *want to agree*, in a way. Because *each one* of those records are moving or trippy or evocative or heartfelt or moody as f*ck. Each one is... one-of-a-kind. If you can appreciate the emotions in Neil's frail voice, if you can sense his genius as a songwriter and tunesmith, there are strong clues that will lead you to believe that ONE of those records is the loner's "magnum opus". Yet the secret is that *none of those albums* can be considered as his magnum opus, really. Because *Harvest* is the one. Yes, as far as sales and mainstream reputation go, it's Neil's most "succesful" release. This always rubs a lot of of the so-called "true" fans the wrong way. And this can even rub grumpy old Neil the wrong way sometimes. Which makes me smile, somehow... The "truth" (*my* truth?) is that *Harvest*'s tracklisting is just... perfect. It's not only the hits ("Old Man", "Heart of Gold" or "Alabama"...). It's also how each song segues into the next. It's how Jack Nietzsche's tense orchestral arrangements on a few tracks provides another dimension to Young's songwriting, and brings welcome dynamics to the whole shebang. It's how "Words" concludes the proceedings in such a heartwrenching fashion. And it's how *each one* of those tunes can leave an eternal imprint in your soul. Because this record will live on forever. And "forever" means long after Spotify, and people remembering who Joe Rogan was, are both gone, lol. So 5/5, what else? Number of albums left to review: 357 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 290 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 154 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 206

p258. 1972. 5 stars. Quality early 70s singer/songwriter on top form. Not a weak track on this. Short, sweet and on point.

Wow, great album! Liked it substantially more than After the Gold Rush.

Holy shit, what an amazing album.

Sadly only one song available on Spotify of the album. Great artist, great talent.

Classic album. One of Neil's best!

Heart of Gold, Old Man, There's a World, Alabama, The Needle and the Damage Done, are absolute classics. What an album. Raw. Real. Lovely.

One of the greatest albums ever made. Neil Young is a real one. On a record jammed with celestial hits Neil waits until the last track to put down his sickest licks. Words is the truest song on Harvest.

10/10, so cottagecore

I used to love listening to Neil Young when I was a teenager, I'm not sure what happened, that he fell off my radar pretty hard, but it's nice to revisit his most popular works. I really like the songs with the orchestra involved, I've listened to this album before but I only really remember the super popular songs, so it's nice have a "fresh" listen on a handful of tracks. I definitely need to be in a certain melancholy mood to listen to Young nowadays, the lyrics hit harder when you're older and understand where they are coming from. From a musical standpoint, I would give this a 4, just cause it feels like classic folk to me. But the writing and nostalgia is just too strong, so this will probably get a 5 from me.

One of the best albums! Love NY, and this is him at his best. The two orchestrated songs don’t hold up as well but still this is a 5

A superb album, full of great tracks: "Harvest", "Heart of Gold", "Old Man", and my favourite "The Needle and the Damage Done".

One of the greatest of all time

I love Neil Young. He’s got a unique voice, and I love the folk sound with guitar and harmonica. Top Tracks: 1) Heart of Gold 2) Old Man 3) There’s A World 4) Alabama 5) The Needle And The Damage Done 6) Words

The two sides of Neil Young - the acoustic balladeer and the electric rocker - share the stage on Harvest, swapping songs, verses, and solos to create a country-rock masterpeice. Harmonicas, close harmonies, exquisite lap steel guitars, and banjos give the album a folksy twang, while the overdriven rhythm guitars and stochastic fuzzy leads bring a heavier, dirtier energy that cuts through the pretty country facade hinting, alongside the gloomy lyrics, of darker depths below. The songs are slow and reflective but the musicianship and vocal performances are so rich it's never dull. NY's voice especially is thin and fragile, almost weak, expressive of a lonely hurt. It's not all brilliant though, "A Man Needs a Maid" and "There's a World" are huge drags, burried under onslaught of ham handed piano and a terrible orchestral arrangement that go for BIG AND SERIOUS but end up sounding like a Disney cartoon.

One of my favourite Neil Young records. It's an incredible blend of sing/song writer, folk, and rock and roll. There is a lot of legendary musicians on this record: Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, David Crosby, James Taylor, and notably The London Symphony Orchestra to name a few. I truly think Neil Young is one of the best acoustic guitar players to this day. His song writing is one of a kind and I without a doubt many artists have taken notes from Uncle Neil. Neil Young has an extensive career with albums dropping once a year, sometimes 2 albums a year. I understand a lot of people have issue with the sound of his voice, claiming it to be whiny or too nasaly but to me, it has an undeniable emotion to it. When he sings his lyrics you feel it. His lyrics are so well written and his phrasing within his songs are perfect. The song Man Needs a Maid stands out to me. It's this haunting, yet vulnerae tale of a man seeking love. It stars with this timid vocal approach at the beginning, then the chorus kicks in with the LSO and its this epic/cinematic piece. Another song that stands out to me is The Needle and the Damage Done, which is the only in front an audience live recording on the album. It's a masterpiece. It tells a story that every musician and non musician within the hippy era 70s scene can relate to: the sad truth about drug use. It's the shortest song on Harvest but it may be the one song that leaves the biggest impression. Every song on here is 5/5. A perfect Neil Young record. Would definitely listen to again, again, and again... Unfortunately NOT on Spotify as his music is no longer available there.

Solid country rock album, interesting layered arrangements, Neil Young's songwriting still shines through. There's a reason this was a standout album for the era.

The quintessential Neil Young album? A little ornery, a little romantic, often pensive and often rocking. A lot of classic songs here too with Old Man and Heart of Gold. Out on the Weekend is a favorite. Harvest, Alabama and Words also excellent. Really hate A Man Needs a Maid, but I guess it fits the aesthetic and theme of the album at least. Still, it’s a classic album.

Has been part of my listening collection and history for 50 years - reminds me of my dad. It’s not always a 5 - depends on my mood but it’s dependable and comforting!

Exceptional listen. I own it on vinyl, happy I was able to revisit. Also great driving music. Orchestral, beautiful folk.

Excellent

Very nice album. One of Neil’s best in my opinion. Lovely use of the harmonica, the piano and what I assume is the pedal steel. Very balanced and calming melodies and vocals. Includes the classic song Heart of Gold. The outro song, Words (Between the Lines of Age), is my favorite of the album.

Great folk rock album by Neil Young. His best song Heart of gold is on this one but the rest is also good.

Fantastic album

Easily fav🩷

Great folk. Like you didn't know.

stand out track- Old Man

Fun fact: "Heart of Gold" was the first song I learned to play all the way through on guitar. Album #3. Neil Young has long been a close singer-songwriter to me, despite my lack of real experience with his music, because of how early I discovered and held onto a few of his songs. "Heart of Gold", of course, but also this album's "Harvest", "My My, Hey Hey", "Harvest Moon". They're very basic picks, but I like to attribute my not having tethered myself to more of his catalog to a certain...podcaster... Tis a lame excuse, but there's no ignoring that his exiting my new main source of music swiftly paused any NY discovery that may have taken place in the last few years. And now I'll have to revisit that unintentional stance, because this album GOES!! It reminds me a lot of Rumours with the change in styles that it plays with, the numerous standards packed in, and the fact that it ends with a complete barnburner. Sometimes, as I'm wont to find out with this project, classic 70s albums can be underwhelming, and in other cases, they end up more in tune with your current taste than they ever were when you first heard them. Here's to a new stage of our relationship, Neil.

Really good from start to finish

Beautiful album. A masterclass in “less is more”.

I know this album. I own this album on vinyl. I love this album.

i guess i love neil young, it’s kind of an abusive relationship, though

Geilomat

Old Man is a fantastic song

Enjoyed

Been enjoying Neil Young’s music a lot lately. I think something I missed the first time I heard this album or whole listening to him previously was that he is has a very rock n roll vibe to his music that is overlooked cuz he’s thought of as an acoustic songwriter usually. Obviously the big 3 of heart of gold, old man, and needle are great songs but I also like the lyrics of harvest and a few others a lot. Super easy to hangout to on a fall day

Knew lots of the songs already without knowing - right up my alley

I’ve listened to this many times, and I’ll listen to it many more. Each time as magical as the first.

one of my favorites. not much else to say.

i never expected a song about alabama to go so hard.

Great album.

Chill and nice album. Knew a couple of songs

I didn't always get Neil Young. However, I love that he does what he is feeling at the moment and if you get it, then great. If you don't, then sucks for you. In this case, I really like almost everything about this album. The songwriting, his singing, the lyrics, the mood (for lack of a better word), all resonated with me. The only exception is "There's a World". That song should have been reworked, or redone altogether. Neil needs to just focus on being Neil.

Just a classic.

Sonzeira, grande mestre

It’s nuts. What starts off as some of the most progressive Americana that you could conceive (and from a Canadian), with the prettiest guitar licks and harmonics melodies taking you to the great open planes and the simple life. Then this dude brings out the grittiest, grungiest blues imaginable and shows you why he is a maverick. He perfects 2 genres and brings you something heavenly in the middle. While his politics have always been at the forefront of his music, and the song Alabama can make him sound like a pompous Jesus-figure trying to save the backwards people from their troubles (we get it Neil, you have all of the answers) it’s clear the he is an opinionated man just trying to spread the word. I think that’s what all good musicians should aspire to, right or wrong. But damn does he get soooo much right. Incredible body of work, just in this quick album.

Seminal album in the history of rock and roll...plus, possibly the finest piece of work, by a truly brilliant artist!

It's really good. It's filled with classics. I just hope this is my last Neil Young album. I like him as an artist but he's on this list too much. At least this one really is great.

Een van mijn favo Young albums en sowieso all time favorite

Music to cherish. If this doesn't move you, you are a rock or an island. Of 'this sort of music' possibly only matched by Desperado by Eagles . Hope that will come along too in the 1001 list.

Such a phenomenal album. Love Neil Young's voice. Kind of music that makes you want to close your eyes and just take in the lyrics and sway with the music. Unfortunately not available on Spotify, but can be streamed on other platforms.

Beautiful. Surprised I'd never listened to it before. It's expansive sonically.

I don’t know why, but I tend to enjoy Neil Young a lot more than his country rock contemporaries - probably just because he makes better music, but I digress. Anyway, Harvest is a classic albums with such great songs as ‘Heart of Gold’, ‘Old Man’, and ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’, and that’s just scratching the surface. All the songs are primarily acoustic, with the exceptions of ‘Alabama’ and ‘Words’, unifying the album. The real great thing about the album is simply how good the songs are, though. Seriously, all of them are great. Just give it a listen. (God, this review was basic.)

Wow this is a fine piece of craftsmanship from start to finish. Incredible lyrics and themes that should have been written by someone twice his age, beautiful fragile musicality, and enough anger under the surface to keep it all tense and interesting.

Amazing from start to finish

Clásico!

Neil Young demonstrating just how much he really didn't need the other three.

Harvemmin pystyn levyä kuuntelemaan, liikutun liikaa. Nyt kuuntelin pitkästä aikaa.

Ah mikä levy. Yksinäinen ja vähän melankolinen. 5/5

Great album. Needle and the Damage Done is an all time classic! Out On The Weekend is a great opener. Perfect album to play on a lonely highway in Western Canada. Only Neil Young can make a country folk album that I love.

Очень крутой альбом, прям то, что мне нравится. Мягкий рок с крутом вокалом и искусными гитарными соло. Что еще нужно для счастья?

A classic

Fantastic.

One of the greatest of all time, even though it's not on Spotify.

An album that wasn't critically acclaimed back in the day, but the more recent and favorable evaluations showcase how much of a classic it is. "Heart of Gold" and "Are You Ready for the Country?" cannot not be played on a loop.

Soft spot for Uncle Neil

Love this album!

Southern Radiohead.

Easy 5.

Like pretty much all of Neil Young's early post-CSNY work, this is a really beautiful album. It's classic Young, with a rich, country-inflected sound and contemplative lyrics. Two of his best known and most popular songs reside here ("Old Man" and "Heart of Gold") as well as some stellar deep cuts. "Words (Between the Lines of Age)" is the stealth best song of the whole album. Wow. I'm less a fan of Young's attempts at sweeping symphonic numbers. It may be the London Symphony Orchestra, but the songs are entirely too polished and really don't suit his his style. On balance though, I would still give this album a 5. Young has better albums, but most artists will never make an album this good. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Old Man, Heart of Gold, Words (Between the Lines of Age), The Needle and the Damage Done, Out on the Weekend, Harvest, Alabama, Are You Ready for the Country?, A Man Needs a Maid, There's a World

A haunting American classic. 5 stars

Young Neil - the best

One of the best albums of all time. That's the review. By total chance I've had several Young albums in the last chunk albums, as well as albums by Stills, and an album by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Will my last 100 just be albums by this combination of people? I'm okay with that.

excellent. Deserved classic status. I enjoyed the tracks with the Philharmonic.

Obviously.

Classic

Exceptional. Wedding music?

Mr. Young continues to grow on me. I found this very moving.

Happy to listen to this - I don’t think I’ve ever heard the whole album. It is the definition of a classic with the incredible Heart of Gold. I was very impressed with the guest artist lineup. I was very surprised when I heard A Man Needs A Maid and There’s A World the orchestral backing… quite impressive and beautiful. What a great album!

AMAZING

Fantastic albums, no skips, every song is great

Pity he left Spotify

Solid record. Knew most of the songs before. Nice to hear together.

Excelent album, a must for every collector.

Harvest, Neil Young's most succesful selling record! This album is very iconically Neil Young, some of his biggest songs are on this album. The tracks featuring the orchestra are maybe somewhat out of place here, but still, this record is a damn classic! Favorite lyrics: - As the days fly past, will we lose our grasp? Or fuse it in the sun? - I've been a miner for a heart of gold - Your Cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch. And a wheel on the track. - I've seen the needle and the damage done. A little part of it in everyone. But every junkie's like a settin' sun. Key tracks: Out On The Weekend, Harvest, Heart Of Gold, Are You Ready For The Country, Old Man, Alabama, The Needle And The Damage Done, Words (Between The Lines Of Age) 9 out of 10

This is my third Neil Young album, and it is one that I am very familiar with. In my mind, this is a perfect album, cover to cover and it is Neil's best! This album is stacked with hits; Old Man, the Needle and the Damage Done, Alabama, and my personal favourite Neil Young song, Heart of Gold. This album tells stories about aging, drug use, and love. This album was really a turning point for Neil. It exploded into the mainstream, and took him from a small time Canadian folk singer to a international star. This album was so successful, that it caused Neil to write his next three albums and fans would coin them the "ditch trilogy", where he wanted to get off of the highway of success a bit and spend some time slowing things down. The inclusion of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, and James Taylor on parts of this record helped to alleviate it past anything Neil had released up to this point. Also, the big band numbers, which included strings and horns was like nothing Neil had done before! A perfect album is a very rare thing, and this is one of them. This is an awesome way to spend a Friday! I've listened to this album many times before, and will definately listen to it many more times!! Favourite songs: Heart of Gold, Old Man, the Needle and the Damage Done, Words (Between the Lines of Age), Alabama, Harvest, Are You Ready For the Country? Least favourite song: if forced to pick, There's A World 5/5

Old Man and Heart of Gold are easily my favourite Neil Young songs. This album is a good listen throughout. Words and The Needle and the Damage Done are songs I liked but hadn't given much thought to before. A Man Needs a Maid sounds like its from a bygone era to my ear.

Obligatory fuck Joe Rogan. This album is a classic and songs like Old Man and Heart of Gold always bring a tear to my eye.

A classic

Just a great album. Love the sleepy sound that Stray Gators provided on this, espically Ben Keith's pedal steel guitar. So many great songs on this album. Another no brainer 5 stars.

One listened to this record so much in his sad, lonely, depressed and mostly intoxicated 20s, that one has taken it for granted, as if one'd worn it out, as if there was nothing left to hear. One was wrong – way wrong. It rings true and beautiful after all this time. "Out on the Weekend" is an excellent starter, gloamy and melancholic, followed by the waltzy-lullaby title cut, which remains massively easy to like. The less said about "A Man Needs a Maid" the better – one only hopes it was written in character or ironically. The orchestral pieces are overdone and belong on another record, though they show how his thin reedy voice can contrast in richly cinematc and lush settings. "Heart of Gold" is inch-perfect (that bell, chiming in the very background, right on cue); one understands why he quit playing it, but that was a silly decision. "Ready for the Country" and "There Is a World" have their moments. "Alabama" is a much stronger song than "Southern Man." And the album closes incredibly strong with "Needle + Damage" and "Words." If this is embarrassing, as an early RS critic said, it's an embarrassment of riches. The absolute worst you can say about is that it's uneven, and the unevenness, which sometimes strays into awkwardness, more often results in authenticity and relatability, and thus, NY's unique power as a most sloppily human sort of artist.

Brilliant. Still one of the best.

The first album I ever bought. 1972. $5.00. Classic.

It's the obvious Neil Young album. But when you listen to it... It's obvious why it's the obvious one. It's the most 'pop' he ever got.

Great album, just not on Spotify anymore.

Amazing Neil Young Album. My favorite from him.

Agreed.

Virtually perfect. No notes.

Not about to mess up the curve on this one. I somehow came into possession of this on vinyl in the very early 2000s. It may have been my father’s, though I don’t ever remember hearing it growing up. (Too busy listening to the Oak Ridge Boys.) But I listened to the shit out of it then. “Heart of Gold” is my main go-to whenever I pick up an acoustic guitar. And it never gets old. This is a classic, no doubt.

Words (Between The Lines Of Age) huhhuh

Great album, several hits

Fantastic album, on of my favourites of Neil Young's. Some great songwriting and guitar playing. The only song on it I don't like is "A Man Needs A Maid", I find the orchestral arrangements and Neil's wailing a bit over the top. Still a 9/10 for me though.

I’m going to be rating this one 5 by default. I’m from central Ontario and I’ve worked at a lumber yard when I was younger. What do you want from me. Has some all time classics and some truly bizarre diversions. A Man Needs A Maid is so such a weird song with the orchestra and him singing about needing a cleaner for his house?

A superb Evergreen and my 1st encounter. So good and true. 4.7

Arguably Neil Young's best album. Combines unmistakable vocals with consummate musical arrangements. A beauty, Neil. A beauty.

This album is perfection. Linda Ronstadt's harmonizing at the end of Heart of Gold never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

fuck you, Joe Rogan and spotify. i choose Neil Young.

C'mon Neil, it's time to put your music back on Spotify. Joe Rogan ended up being kinda justified in his skepticism anyways, so you just look like a huge pussy for throwing such a huge fit. Why is everyone so authoritarian these days?

Still beautiful.

Amazing

I already listened to this

Classic Neil Young. I'm a fan.

I can't not give this album 5 stars. It is an all time classic and foundational to so much music. Especially a lot of the bands that I love. Every song is good but my personal favorites are; "Out on the Weekend", "Harvest", "Heart of Gold" (My number one on here and an all time great song), "Old Man", and "The Needle and the Damage Done". An all time great album from an all time great artist. I would much rather have Neil Young on Spotify than Joe Rogan, but unfortunately they don't feel the same.

This is just pure treasure and one of my most valued records. I don't even know what more to say. Doubling down on streaming services just because Spotify is missing Neil Young is worth for this album alone.

Love this album!

I love this album

Really good

Det er vel topp 10 Neil, er vel det. Hørt på strømmetjenesten Neil Young Archives, anbefales!

I know of 0 albums better than this one

Great album. I could listen to this over and over, Heart of Gold, Old Man, Needle and the Damage Done. So much feeling in every song, guitar work is great. Overall great album

ALL TIME FAVORITE

One of the very best. 5/5

Wonderful album with great arrangements. 10/10 would listen again

One of my favorite of the LEGEND Neil Young ! You need to listen to this album on the side of a firepit with a whisky in your hand to really feel the mood. Awesome album

A timeless classic of folk music that borders on perfection. The lyrics, the emotion, the arrangements, the compositions, the interpretation. Everything is there. There are times like this where the magic worked 100%.

Always great to hear this classic!

There are so many of these songs I know and love. And not just the hits: "Words Between The Lines Of Age," "The Needle And The Damage Done" "A Man Needs A Maid" (Ok, the last one is a bit shmaltzy, but still... Neil YOUNG, man.) Although at first, when I listen to this album I think "Oh boy here comes country again." But it is so much more varied than that. Weird fact: I sang "The Needle and the Damage Done" as a lullaby for my kid. Is that weird? No, not weird at all. Classic album. Love it.

This is a good album but its charms are also its weaknesses. Neil Young is one of the finest lyricists we've seen in the last 100 years and it shows in songs like Out on the Weekend, Heart of Gold, Old Man, and especially The Needle and the Damage Done. But I don't know what he was going after in A Man Needs a Maid (cringeworthy way to express his adoration for a woman) and Alabama (heavy-handed, which even he admits now). His stripped down but deft musical arrangements are hallmarks of his as well - and that is here in spades on 8 of 10 songs. On top of that he nicely brings in the London symphony on A Man Needs a Maid (sound is cool even if lyrics are junky), but then the symphony feels overdone and disruptive on There's a World (the harp in particular makes it sound like a bad Disney theme song). Still, if you step back there is maybe one bad song, a couple so-so songs (weak lyrics but good sound), and the rest is really Neil Young at his lyrical and musical best. And his best is quite a high bar. And I say that as someone who is not a fan.

I don’t know if this is Neil’s best- I like his rocking stuff- but it’s his most popular for a reason. The bridge between folk and country never sounded so tight and refined as it does here. A

Great overall album! The harmonica and Neil Young’s voice are beautiful and work so well together

Currently unavailable but I've got it covered in CD and vinyl. Absolute classic if the genre.

Almost perfection.

Not on Spotify so listening on YouTube. I wish Spotify would tell you when you lose songs or if they get removed! I had no idea all my Neil Young songs were gone. I enjoy Neil Young's music and voice. I know he's not for everyone though. "A Man Needs A Maid" would be a really solid song to sample. "Heart Of Gold" is a classic. This is driving in California along the coast music with the wind in your hair. Super easy listening but such a good one front to back.

Not much to say here other than a fantastic album.

Absolute classic. Love Neil Young and this album has some of his biggest hits, including my favorite NY song (Old Man).

Definitely growing on me, it gets more interesting every time I hear it. Love the unpredictable key changes and the way the whole thing is out together. I listened to this on YouTube Music, with ads. Totally respect Neil's decision to avoid Spotify.

old ghost voice at his best. the album that got me into Neil Young

Qué discazo! Se disfruta al escuchar. Todo un genio musical el gran Neil Young. Me trae mucha nostalgia porque a mi papá QEPD le gustaba mucho Neil Young, y ahora aprecio más los detalles de la música de este señorón.

I like Neil Young but I also feel like 3 (at least) albums on this list may be a lot. Some interesting developments, but still. But if you were going to put one on the list, it should be this one.

Classic Neil Young post the iteration of CSNY. Great album. Favourite tracks are "Old Man" "Heart Of Gold" and the excruciating "Needle And The Damage Done" which of course is all about Crazy Horse Bandmate Danny Whitten who eventually died of an overdose. Great Album rightfully on the list.

Even the songs that aren't considered the classics are classic.

Political, soulful, masterful

Absolute classic

Out on the weekend Harvest Hear of Gold Old Man There's a world Alabama The needle and the damage done Words Enorme chef d'oeuvre, énorme connard. Mais comme le veut la loi de Pink Floyd, ici la musique prime sur la personnalité. Et c'est excellent.

9/10. Not the biggest Neil Young fan, but this is a very solid album.

A great complete album of well made songs uniquely expressed

It's taken a while to get used to Neil's voice (I'm sorry Bob, I'll never get used to yours) and now I have there is no doubting the genius of this album, even if I had told find a new music streaming service to listen to it.

Young’s best

Really really nice man....

Classic Neil Young album. In a Neil Young top 5 I would put Everybody Knows, After The Goldrush, On The Beach, Tonight's The Night, Comes A Time and this album (and Freedom and Harvest Moon as well, and of course Rust Never Sleeps and Zuma).

Brilliant album from start to finish.

Not my favourite Neil but better than I remember.

Love this album. Grew up listening to it, so it holds a special place in my heart. When I think of Neil Young, this is what I hear...

First time listening to a Neil Young a album in full and this is brilliant.

Incredible. Every song is great

Priceless

Shame to discover this just as he’s off Spotify, but nothing if not worth finding another platform for 36 minutes of perfect music for anything. I already knew a couple songs but this is a listen through that gives you everything you need. Can’t wait to sit back in the sun and let this wash over me.

Deux jours apres que neil young ait retire ca musique de spotify, ca fait un tres bon albums plus dure a ecoute. Quand meme une perte pour spotify. Pour l’instant… un classique. 5*

Had this one on vinyl back in the day and have always enjoyed it. It's his most popular album and it deserves to be. Though I may like some of his other albums slightly more, this is still a masterpiece. It has a little bit of everything, from the wistful folk and country flavored ballads that seem to be his forte, to the intensely arranged pieces like "A Man Needs a Maid" or "There's a World," to some genuine sing along rockers like "Are You Ready for the Country" or "Alabama." He covers alot of ground and even sneaks in some live material while he's at it. You might think it would come out as an incoherent mess but it all seems to blend together quite well. Ends up sounding like a cohesive album to my ears. The 2009 remaster sounds gorgeous.

Great album. Lots of classics

I don't even need to listen to this one. I already know every song. I have seen Neil live over 25 times. Classic album. All great by one of the greatest musicians and song writers of my lifetime. I especially enjoy Alabama, Words, Old Man and Man needs a maid. (Don't we all?)

Classic. A bit quiet for my normal listening, but has it's place. Love the simplicity.

In my opinion, among the best albums ever made. It’s a slow burn, but i felt that this album in particular shows off Neil Young’s versatility as an artist. Out on the Weekend - Damn, what a sad song. The loneliness and disconnect he describes sets the stage for the rest of the album in a powerful way. Harvest - Not my favorite. It’s a bit on the slower side, and he really leans in on the country influence here. Gave it a few listens and just couldn’t come around on it. A Man Needs a Maid - Love how he leans on the London Symphony Orchestra here for a unique spin on folk-rock. Interesting song, just unfortunately overshadowed by the big hits on the album. Heart of Gold - Legendary song. I’m jealous of the geezers that got to hear it on the radio ad-nauseam back in the early 70s. Are You Ready for the Country - Despite Crosby and Nash’s involvement on this one, I can never get past the fact that this song just gets in the way of me hearing my two favorites back-to-back. It’s a fine song, but i just want to hear “Old Man”. Old Man - Like “Heart of Gold”, I find this song to be completely addicting. This is one you can throw on repeat and it never gets old. Also, I’m convinced this song inspired Harry Chapin’s “Cats in the Cradle”. They just sound so dang similar. There’s a World - London Symphony Orchestra crushes it again with this song. Not the kind of thing I’d normally go for, but it works. Alabama - He teams up with Stills and Nash to follow up on “Southern Man’s” critique of southern social injustices, this song unfortunately still resonates a half-century after this album’s release. Is “tied in white ropes” alluding to the KKK? Sheeeeeesh. On top of the powerful messaging, the guitar in this song absolutely shreds. 5/7. Needle and the Damage Done - Powerful, sad song about drugs ruining the lives of people around Neil. Somehow feels out of place that he used a live version in the middle of a studio recorded album. Words - Can’t get enough of the way this song builds in the last three minutes. Awesome end to an awesome album.

One of the greatest albums of all time. Probably in my top 5.

I love Neil Young and this is certainly among his best. The only misses on the album from my perspective are the two songs with the cheesy orchestration - A Man Needs a Maid and There's a World. Not sure what he was thinking on those two songs, but it's still a classic. 5 stars.

A classic.

This album sees Neil Young grappling with the urge to settle down into a quiet place with someone he loves. The impulse is universal and it leads to a richly textured folk country album that includes some of Young’s most enduring songs.

A beautiful and timeless record, one of those albums that I never get tired of. Grew up with this album so I hold it close to my heart. Easily Neils finest moment although I’d say he would disagree. From the wonderful lyrics through to the guitar and orchestration it’s just flawless.

Easy 5 and a treat to listen to on the HiFi.
