Reviews (page 6 of 14)

I really like innovative and creative music and the Rockefeller Skank has more creativity in it than most other bands entire albums. That song and Praise are ubiquitous at this point. Even if you haven’t listened to them you’ve heard them. Listening through the whole album, it got a bit repeated and same-y though dropping it down a point. Vocal sample repeated and stuttered over top of big drums. When I read it was just a guy recording everything in his basement on an Atari with floppies it bumped it back up for me. I really wish I could give this a 4.5 or 4.75 stars, so close to a perfect album.

A classic electronic album.

All of the sudden I’m craving a Mountain Dew

Really fun Big beat album. The soul and funk samples mixed with the most insane transitions makes every song danceable. The beats while standard for it's genre are also really well done. I don't like Kalifornia. 4.5/5

Unverwechselbarer Sound, prägend in den Hits „ Right here, right now „ und „Rockafella Skank“ - genial und mitreißend. Für mich aber kein Album zum durchhören, denn da fehlt mir die Abwechslung im Sound. Aufgrund der Originalität für mich trotzdem 4 Sterne.

Spitze

just an incredible album, loved it

Wow. Haven’t actually listened to this album in it’s entirety before, and of course I know the popular songs like Praise You, but I’m stoked I listened to this! Awesome album. Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: ohhhh hard call, they’re all so good! Probably Kalifornia or Fucking in Heaven

Electronic classic album

An outstanding and innovative quintessential '90s album. Excellent.

Nice Songs. Nice Lyrics. Except from „Praise You“ I knew nothing from Farboy Slim!!! personal top3 in no order: Fucking in Heaven Praise You Acid 8000

That albums banging 😁👌

Brings me right back to the late 90's, but still amazing.

So good

90’s distilled in an album, great listen

After a streak of meh albums lately, this one is a nice refreshment. It is very 2000s djy. A hefty amount of electronic elements, samples and repeating melodies. I liked it. But the question still remains. Is he a fatboy or is he slim? 7/10.

Feels like an album I'd come across while digging through the discounted record bin and buying it just for the giggles. Kinda slaps, almost like I've heard it before in terrible tinny quality coming from my mom's Sony Ericsson flip phone as a soundtrack to a gangsta' parkour mobile game. Or something that would play from the bullies' boombox in an anti-bullying campaign. Or something Felix would download very slo-o-o-owly through uloz.to in his Extrem DJ phase. Or what rowdy eight-year-olds would learn their dance routine to in a small town Hip Hop afterschool class. Giving it a very biased 4-star rating, because unlike the past multiple albums, this actually evoked "some" emotional reaction.

So I had never heard of Big Beat before listening to this album despite hearing of many of the big artists in the genre like Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers. I had heard of Fatboy Slim only because of the "Weapon Of Choice" music video in probably 2016 and never looked into the artist because I was not into electronic music at that point and I was pretty young. I just assumed it was a one hit wonder of a group that managed to shell out a lot of money to get a famous actor in their music video. It was not until I got into music that I learned about electronic music and the vastness of the different subgenres. Like I had never heard a Daft Punk album or even heard of Aphex Twin before getting into music. All that to say I had really no clue what was in store for me for this album besides it was some sort of electronic album in a genre called Big Beat. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that Big Beat essentially is a type of electronic music that is heavy on its use of breakbeats, uses a lot of samples and distorted sounds, and is very energetic and playful. This made it such a fun, easy listen and is definitely one of those albums that I could see myself throwing on whenever. From start to finish I liked every song. It was so playful which was a nice change up as the last few electronic albums I had heard like "Music Has The Right To Children" and "Post" have been sort of depressing. I particularly like the progressions on songs like "Right Here Right Now", "Kalifornia" and "Soul Surfing". I don't have much to say about this album besides it was fun because I don't really know how to talk about electronic music yet. I can say I really enjoyed the breakbeats on the album and it really lived up to the genre it hails from, I liked alot of the samples like the ones on "Fucking in Heaven", "Gangster Trippin" and "Acid 8000". Overall I really liked this album but I do find that some of the songs go on a little too long and some can get a little annoying at times. I think my favorite songs on the album are "Right Here Right Now", "Praise You", "The Rockafeller Skank" and "Soul Surfing". 8.5-9/10

Liked the beats. Had a cool vibe to it

Best of it's kind

Infectious, top album.

Right Here, Right Now - 4 The Rockefeller Skank - 4 Fucking in Heaven - 2 Gangster Trippin - 4 Build it Up, Tear it Down - 3 Kalifornia - 3 Soul Surfing - 2 You're Not From Brighton - 3 Praise You - 4 Love Island - 4 Acid 8000 - 3

7.5/10

This was a big disc man album for me when it came out. Doesn’t totally hold up, but I’ll round it up from a 3.6

hell yeah. hard hitting incredible beats, energetic and funky. best tracks: right here right now, rockafeller skank, praise you

This is like a fun live set for an album. But some of the songs that are way to repetitive. Repeats: the Rockefeller skank, gangsta trippin, praise you Skips: in heaven

Praise You forever a banger

Really fun electronic album

feeling generous, but was an easy listen

Surprisingly interesting.

been a long time since i've heard this, and i'm sure i've listened through the album many times back in the late 90s and early 2000s + seeing FBS in concert at the Tabernacle I believe... good memories and my first real taste of electronic music. 4.4/5

现在的韩娱公司制作人应该非常喜欢非常愿意模仿的一张专,全歌几乎都是重复几个词几句话

* Rockefeller Skank Gangster Trippin Kalifornia Soul Surfing You're Not From Brighton * Praise You

I do quite enjoy a lot of the tunes on this. I think Fatboy Slim is kind of iconic and it feels like it was fresh in the nineties. As an album though, it kind of feels more like a collection of songs than something I want to listen from end to end, so I'd like to say 3.95 but I'll give it a 4.

Big beats are the best, get high all the time.

Not as good as i remember it back in 1998-99 but still a nostalgic album :)

It really does have some great songs on it, brought back good memories of the 90s.

Big beats, melodies, samples. Proper Zeitgeist. Classy house/techno with an edge of thoughtful selections

Really fun except the ones that swear a lot. Good workout music I

BANGERS!

The genius here in this genre crossing romp is the sampling. Bits and pieces from a collection of noise brought together in a tight seamless loop that bounces, bangs, crashes and bops along in a tight engaging way that encourages a full listen all the way through. Not a musical masterpiece in the traditional sense, but it's a celebration of dance, pop, and the joys of sampling. It's Fatboy Slim's party, you just have to dance along.

incredible dance music and so great for gaming and racing games. Has so much personality. Love Island has some weird drum programming that messes with me a bit but otherwise its all great. Highlights : Gangster Trippin, Kalifornia and the 3 big songs

Nostalgia, and all?

A prime example of what would have once been called Big Beat. The music alternates between catchy, silly, and acid-laced dance party. I loved this album when I was young. Now, I'd need to be in the mood for it. It has retained some of its charm over the years though.

Fatboy Slim is truly one of my favorite electronic bands, this album is full of bangers.

Great for work environment

Awesome sounds, great grooves

Timeless album.

He put down some deliberate tracks here, good stuff. Couldn't help but find myself being a nuisance to my co-workers on the third playthrough, tapping and moving along to the beats. Had fun trying to identify all the samples he used too.

All the ingredients are there, and yet... its somehow a bit too obvious?

Itseni ja Sohon omistajan puolesta haluan kiittää erinomaisesta albumista

Super energizing album, enjoyed it!

This album has a bunch of songs that can cheer me up me at any time, love the vibe that Fatboy slim puts down.

Lots of fun. Definitly has some lesser moments but mostly sparks joy

Definitely some bangers in there, Right Here Right Now, Rockefeller Skank, Praise You; Gangster Trippin and Soul Surfing we’re good too. All the other tracks were way too repetitive and boring.

Very solid big beat with a great sense for production. Has aged gracefully

So Before I review You've Come a Long Way Baby, I need to ask myself one simple question "Was I high on drugs during this album?" No? Well in that case, This is the weirdest album i have looked at so far. It felt like every song had something different to deliver. But that doesn't mean this album is bad, in fact, the crazy beats are what kept me engaged because they could just be so catchy. Definitely a pretty great album Best Song: Gangster Trippin Worst Song: F*cking In Heaven

3 great, few mwaah

Liked it!

Ja deze was lekker dannnnn!

Echt heel erg goed. Ga gelijk de lp kopen

Check it out now

I would have never picked this album, but I am thoroughly enjoying it. I know the hits, but am digging the lesser known jams. Perfect for working on boring shit. Just what I needed this morning!

This album was the shit in my world in the late 90's. I'm sure I haven't listened to it in 20+ years though. It doesn't quite hold up to what I used to think of it, but it's still a ton of fun. Fatboy Slim is still fucking in heaven.

Knew the hits, enjoyed the rest.

Omg love love love right here right now- especially while driving. This is the defining music of the 90s, feels like home.

похоже очень на прикольный idm но брейкбиты выдают эту музыку с лихвой) в целом класс, но немного затянуто и репетативно (хотя с кайфом поработал)

This fucking album cover. Hahaha. Anyone else remember the time when some dumb ass hole drove an emergency vehicle through the crowd at the Fatboy Slim show during Woodstock 99? There is a lot to be…praised…here. When it’s on, it’s ON. the opening track into Rockefeller Skank is wonderful. And then we’re treated to In Heaven, which is impossible to not get stuck in your head. But the record is 10-15 minutes too long. It is very much a DJ set in album form, and I don’t know if that works for me. But hey, strong closer and a very important album for 98. My booty isn’t dead, cause it was movin.

Big fat beats are far from slim on this raving relic of late-90s British electronica.

Much better than I expected. I’m surprised how much of this I have heard before.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qyeL39_-nM

Didn’t like cussing

LOVED. Ride a boat now. The funk's old brother

Despite a moniker that would now be deemed "problematic" in today's cultural climate, Norman Cook's sophomore album is a must-listen for those who are fans of "Praising You" by Rita Ora.

This was fun, not something I would listen to on my own tbh. I did enjoy the very dated sound effects used throughout the album. Made it feel really nostalgic. I was also surprised that the first song was familiar!

Didn’t hate it!

You've Come a Long Way, Baby is the second album by Fatboy Slim - English electronic music producer Norman Cook. This was Fatboy Slim's breakthrough album, being critically acclaimed, performing well on charts around the world, and earning many gold and multi-platinum certifications too. The big beat / techno album is filled with big hooks, cool beats, and unexpected twists that almost make this a near-perfect electronica record. I've loved the single "Right Here, Right Now" since I first heard it in the early 2000's, and the rest of this album is just as catchy. I'm glad I finally got the chance to listen to the whole album. Fatboy Slim is an EDM treasure that produced some truly unique tracks. Please give this album a listen.

Praise you is my mums favourite song. It’s a great one but I wasn’t overly excited for the album. How wrong I was - I loved all the beats and silliness here. Rockefeller transcends taste, praise you is a classic and the others are tongue in cheek and delighful. Found it tailed off for me at the end.

Fatboy Slim was probably the first dance music artist I 'got' when I was a kid. His tunes were playful and catchy, and I could enjoy listening to them in the cold light of day, without requiring the context of some sort of nightclub, dance hall or discothèque. As a wise man once said, 'if this don't make your booty move your booty must be dead'. The awesome video to Right Here Right Now definitely helped get me on board, too.

Some incredible songs but also a few fillers

Staple of the 90's and way ahead of its time

Listened to this a ton in high school. These days it's not my favorite genre, but I still appreciate it.

I thought it was okay. Like most electronica, there are a few songs that might be brilliant, and I really enjoy. Then the rest seem to be filler and get to the point of repetitivness very quickly. But the couple of really good songs probably bump it up a point, between a 3 and a 4 for me, I'll go up to a 4.

rockrockrockrockrockrockrockrock rockafeller rockafeller

Repetitive but fun

Really fun collection of dance bangers from one of electronic music’s greatest decades The sampling on this is mind-blowing too Favourite tracks: Right Here Right Now, Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Trippin, Kalifornia, Soul Surfing, Praise You

Catchy electronic music, several fantastic songs on this album. Here be earworms.

expertly curated. god i love electronica. fav songs: rockafeller stank, gangster trippin, build it up tear it down, you're note from brighton

I’m kind of a sucker for most electronic music on this list, aren’t I? I mean, I’ve mostly gotten more popular artists, really, except for Goldie and Boards of Canada, with even the latter being critically acclaimed, just not super accessible. Anyway, a lot of great songs on this album, some of my favorites being ‘Right Here, Right Now’, ‘Praise You’, and especially ‘The Rockafeller Skank’. Again, I just love this genre, but I like these songs a lot, and it’s a good example of great electronic music.

Gets a bit repetitive, but some huge songs on here

"You've Come a Long Way, Baby" is the second studio album by Fatboy Slim, a project of English electronic producer, DJ and former Housemartin bassist Norman Cook. The album was recorded at Cook's home in Brighton, UK using an Atari ST computer, Creator software and floppy disks. The genres are big beat and techno with one critic naming it the definitive big beat album. It was widely acclaimed and his breakthrough album peaking at #1 in the UK and #34 in the US. The album cover (US changed it) was taken at the 1983 Fat People's Festival in Danville, Virginia. The album title was the slogan for Virginia Slim cigarettes. The name of the artist is Fatboy Slim. Ah, clever. I see the connections. A slow synth opens the fourth and final single "Right Here, Right Now." Beats. A dreamy song. Various music samples from the James Gang's "Ashes, the Rain & I." The song title and repeated vocal chorus is a sample quote from Angela Bassett in "Strange Days." The Lord Finesses vocal sample "Right about now, the funk soul brother, Check it...." repeats throughout "The Rockafellar Skank." Scratchy, repetition, tempo changes. One of the most memorable vocal samples. Quite creative. A highlight of "Gangster Tripping" is the layered samples. Scratching. "You got to get down." A sample of a DJ Shadow sample. I'm just going to keep using sample in every sentence and why not continue with "Praise You" since there arectwo brilliant uses of sampling here. "Take Yo' Praise" by Camille Yarbrough is stretched into the primary vocal chorus. The main melody is a piano sample from a JBL test album "Sessions." How did he even find that? Every song samples four to eleven songs, quotes, video games and noises. I don't know if there is any sound entirely original here except in the very creative and original way Cook puts this together. The music itself varies from techno, 80's synth computer pop, club, industrial, big beat and hip hop. The top-end hits are catchy, some of the best of the 90's and the rest was experimental enough for me to keep it interesting and definitely worthy the listen.

Unfortunately, I was born in the wrong time and the wrong place to be able to fully experience this music.

I wish I could go back to the late 90s and hear this again for the first time. 4/5

me encanta

Great album.

It's easy to forget how big this album was when it came out. And I think we've all heard some of these tracks so much (Praise You, The Rockafella Skank) that we take them for granted. But this was big and I feel it changed a lot in terms of what sort of music was popular in the UK. At the time of its release the UK album charts included Bewitched, Phil Collins, The Corrs, Ladysmith Blackmambazo, The Beautiful South, Cliff Richard and Boyzone - I shit you not.

Muy lindo el punchi punchi, pero ya estoy viejo para darle 5 estrellas

A compelling showcase of how the electric mainstream worked back in the 90s: thick sounds and spicy tunes at full speed

плясала весь день

Heard before while exercising. The first half is iconic, so many good songs and memories. I love especially the Fucking In Heaven Simons GT Remix!

This is another one of those ones I am surprised I didn't own at the time... heard it endlessly andseveral tracks still kick around today, I had the Propellerheads, how did I NOT own this one?

Love this album. I remember when it came out when I was in middle school -- it still hits. :)

It’s a great Dance Album. But Dance Albums aren’t great to listen to… It’s era defining in its own way - I was just getting into mixing around this time so I’m surprised we didn’t have a copy of this kicking around. I guess I never could really dance to this kind of stuff, so what’s the what’s the point in dance music you can’t dance to? Maybe? I’d love to find out how he made this using 3.5’ floppy disks though!

listened

Multiple radio bangers bolstered by a solid rest of the album. All it neede3d was a little Christopher Walken.

Solid background music. This project has me listening and enjoying more electronic music than I would have thought. Overall I enjoyed it, but I think there were some slight misses and the length could have been a little shorter. Favorites: Right Here Right Now, Rockafeller Skank, Fucking in Heaven, Praise You Least Favorites: Acid 8000

Everybody likes a bit of Fatboy Slim, right? I wouldn’t say I’m familiar with loads of his music, but the stuff they gets played on the radio is usually good fun. I don’t think I’ve listened to this album in full before - or if I have, it was a very long time ago. Songs I already knew: Right Here Right Now, Rockefeller Skank, Fucking In Heaven, Gangster Trippin, Praise You Favourites: Rockafella Skank, Kalifornia I hadn’t realised before listening to this today how despite the music being obviously something intended to dance to, there are enemy’s of surf-rock and maybe even rockabilly at times. It’s an interesting fusion of genres that works very well. There were a few songs that felt more skippable but on the whole I did enjoy this quite a lot. It’s feel-good music with no expectation to follow the lyrics (as there is minimal), so you can easily just relax and enjoy the ride.

day 8. All I knew of Fatboy Slim before this was Rockafeller Skank and that Christopher Walken video for (checks notes) Weapon of Choice. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Could've been cut down for size, but as background music for grind-it-out type work it actually made the hour go by fast. I could see myself coming back to this. 3.5/5 rounded up to 4 faves: Acid 8000; Right Here, Right Now; Praise You

Tiukka meininki! Kyllähän tässä kuuluu se että samplaustekniikka on ollut mitä on mutta hieno meininki. Sillai sopivan yksinkertainen! 4/5

The hits on this are dance records for the ages and still sound terrific. As a fan of big beats I'll always be up for getting down to this. More venues should play this kind of stuff, it's good fun.

Red hot bangers on this one. I did feel some of them got a bit obnoxiously repetitive after a while but still deserving of a big number

Fatboy Slim managed to capture the essence of what was happening amongst electronic music in the late 90s and, in the process, came up with some of the most iconic and enduring songs not only in his catalog but in the genre. You've Come A Long Way, Baby is about an hour of exciting, relentlessly fun album. If you don't make your booty move to this then your booty must be dead. Favorites: Right Here, Right Now, The Rockafeller Skank, Fuckin'/Illin in Heaven, Gangster Trippin', Kalifornia, Praise You, Love Island, Acid 8000.

Really enjoyable listen. Definitely similar vibe to the other trip-hop/plunderphonic type music I've heard from the 90s, though a lot more streamlined and an entirely different focus. This album is absolutely packed with catchy musical ideas, super entertaining chops and samples, and everything I could've wanted from an album like this. The run from Rockafella Stank up through Praise You is just hit after hit, and I was never bored for a second even with the long runtimes on these songs. I do wish it was a bit more experimental in its execution, since none of the ideas were at all mindblowing, just super catchy and fun to listen to. But there's nothing wrong with that!

A ton of fun, with deliciously layered samples and a relentless tempo. Arguably Norman Cook’s crowning achievement.

Seriously great

Hmmm. So am familiar with this album, so all a bit meh at first, but by the end I was raving to all the forgotten album tracks. Actual lol at the one where it sounds like it says I am a druggy druggy druggy.

Why listen to this album when you can just rail cocaine? For real love this album, hype but not unlistenable. It’s 3-4 songs too long

Hell yeah

Very good

Part of the soundtrack of life in the late 90s, early 00s. Includes the ubiquitous "Praise You", plus the classic "Right Here Right Now".

Been a long time since I listened to this, I forgot how good it is! Obviously, it's best enjoyed in a nite club or something similar, vs on headphones in my home office. But it brought back some nice memories. There are are couple of songs that run a bit too long, and tbh "Soul Surfing" and "You're Not From Brighton" don't do much for me. Other than that though, great album. Weirdly enough, I had Acid 8000 stuck in my head a few days before this popped up, despite not having heard it for years. Maybe I'm psychic!

Yes boy! Some sick beats in here. Lovely bass, really working my headphones. A lot of it IS very repetitive, but it's still a head-boppin' good time. What I appreciate about a lot of these songs is that they're a real, real happy time. Standing in the sunshine with friends, pint of cider in your hand, feeling the good vibes kind of songs.

Time and circumstances make this album a hit or miss, but as luck would have it, this review comes on the heels of a day in the office where this energy was apropos. This album, like many in the electronic music genre, makes use of sound effects, loops, tons of repetitive elements that eventually get boring, but Fatboy Slim finds a way to break that monotony of sounds and put out actual songs. This is what separates this album and Fatboy Slim from their electronic contemporaries who either focused solely on dance, or trance. Catchy electronic music that justifies a few minutes of key repetitions is truly an elusive element in that genre, but that's where this album really shines.

Epic from start to finish

Right Here Right Now is a five star banger. A true classic. I did like the big beat sound of the late 90s and even though it is somewhat dated, I still enjoy it. You're Not From Brighton is a hidden gem.

Better than I remember, the samples are outatanding

Great album, still sounds very modern decades after its release.

There's something iconic about Fatboy Slim. I have no idea where I know 'The Rockefeller Skank' from but I immediately recognized it. Really catchy music and beats that kept me on my toes. Between this and Leftism, I think I'm starting to enjoy some electronica. 4

4 Probably not something most people would think I’m into, but as far as big beat and electronica goes, I think Fatboy Slim is the best in the game. His beats are so goddamn epic and catchy, and straight out of the gate this album starts with a strong example of that with Right Here, Right Now. Then, at nearly seven minutes, The Rockafeller Skank seems like the kind of song that would grow annoying quickly, being that’s it basically one line repeated over and over, but the dynamics of the composition are so snappy and interesting that it really doesn’t grow old, to the point where I probably wouldn’t even mind if it went on longer. I don’t think there are a ton of DJs that could pull that off, and he does so successfully a few times here on the album, though also notably on one of my personal favorites of his, Don’t Let the Man Get You Down (not on this album). While not every song reaches the highs of the above mentioned tracks, they’re all still fun and have a good vibe to them, though I do have to praise Praise You in particular for being an absolute 10/10 song and probably the best of his career. If you haven’t seen the Spike Jonze-directed music video, I would recommend giving it a watch. While not a 5/5 album, I do think Fatboy is a 5/5 in the genre, and if you enjoyed anything here I would encourage giving at least the rest of his Greatest Hits a listen.

Ouverture à Right Here right now suivi de Rockafeller Skank.. Ensuite que des sons très scratch qui s'écoutent moyen et puis : Praise you! Stylé.. Love Island aussi pas mal avec le sample de "So Few words"

This held up really well

I don’t have Fatboy Slim nostalgia goggles?

Some soongs were repetitive. Buuuut, biigg butty but it wass a goood vibeeee. Me liki

Really good, worth a relisten

Good album — really brings me back to the late 90s and the music and movie of that time; Oceans 11 comes to mind.

Musica orecchiabile, ascolto piacevole, qualche canzone spettacolare. Canzoni preferite: 1. Rockafeller Skank 2. Right Here Right Now 3. Praise You

Muss man mitnicken.

Listened to this while on a run. Might have gotten a personal best time, might have also pulled a hammy. Fat boy slim giveth the groove, and fat boy slim taketh the groove

this album gives me kids-jumping-around-in-a-bouncy-house vibes. At times the repetition got old but for the most part it was one of the most fun albums I’ve heard so far

Strong work, iconic tunes.

De bra

Good album. I had heard a few

Has some great tracks that are a lot of fun to listen to, but the repetition can be a little much.

Funky DJ Mashups. Classic 90's hits "Praise You" and "The Rockefeller Skank" are on this album. Rest of the album sounds similar. Good listen overall.

This album was everywhere in the late 90s. It sounds quite dated now, but very nostalgic and still a lot of fun. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Praise You Date listened: 10/12/22

This is really a 3.5 but i love the song gangster trippin, which was on the go soundtrack and I just found out was released on my birthday.

Fun listen with some absolute fire singles.

Almost a 5 I guess

This would make me want to riot in a Woodstock 99 airplane hangar too

This was what cool sounded like in the 90s. I can see how if you weren't there you'd think this was lame. But I was there and I think it's awesome.

I enjoyed this album. It is classified as bigbeat and the influence of earlier beat driven electronica (like techno or acid house) can be heard. This album fit comfortably into the background, but moments throughout fully captures my attention. Simply put this album has a very infectious groove.

This is not for casual listening or the concert goers... this is dance club / festival music to get people moving around. It typically criticize tunes for having canned beats but tjis is where they belong. Norman Quentin Cook aka Fatboy Slim is a genius electronica dance club DJ and producer. The songs are long but the constant sense of ADHD due to constant introduction of new content while keeping a thread of repeation that would drive you nuts if not distrated by the crowd if out of control dancers. I only counted 102 times the word "f**k!ng" was used in the song "In Heaven"... repeation to the level of uncomfortable but exactly as intended. This is template for anyone wanting to produce dance music... keep them on the floor.

Fatboy Slim is part of the soundtrack of my high school life, particularly “Praise You” and “Rockefeller Skank”. But as much love as I have for those songs (and later hits like “Weapon of Choice”) it never occurred to me to listen to the whole album? Bless streaming sites. On the topic of YCALWB, I loved every minute of it. The repetitiveness of the whole thing makes it super easy to have on the background while working, but then I pay attention and it makes me smile. Gotta take a look at all the other FBS albums I missed.

83/100

Great 90s music

Not bad, but a bit too repetitive for my liking

Some absolute bangers. Solid 3.5/5

3.75 out of 5. Norman's smashing it

Pretty fun

favourite song: rockefeller skank very good album however maybe a bit too long

Great album. Good tunes for a party/night out etc. A lot of hits on this. Enjoyed most of it.

Good background music / chill summer music.

Leuk om nummers van deze guy op whosampled.com te bekijken

Cool sampling, sounds like a mix of homemade samples and things found in other songs The album has a unique sound, created by the many repetitions in both the beat and the harmonic structure, the lyrics, witch there are few of, are simple and recognisable soundbites It is easy to find the sound from this album in pop created after this album (maybe not because of this album tho) The placement of 'praise you' is perfect, the track is deferent enough to give a well needed break

Blast of nostalgia … high school baby! The hits are big big and the others are … fine. Fun listen

Directo en la nostalgia, aunque con menos impacto que otros porque la música electrónica tampoco es mi favorita. Obviamente sobresale Rockafeller Skank pero también Right Here Right Now, Praise You y Gangster Trippin.

Cool DJ stylings and the enduring hit Rockafeller Skank. Soul Surfing is good. This is a great get shit done album. Praise You is also a great track. Acid 8000 is pioneering.

Klassiker, och före sin tid. Catchy. Varierande kvalitet.

Finally, some good music. mieux que le français et le beck combinés

It grooves. Fatboy Slim rules. Good album for working or having on as atmospheric while doing something.

Some really annoying bits in here like the high pitched whine towards the middle of Rockafeller Skank and the repetitive lyrics of In Heaven but the rest is so good.

Inte hört hela plattan förut men den är verkligen späckad med hits.

Great album. Takes me back to college

me re divertí kjj creo q es el q más me gustó hasta ahora aaa. 8.5/10

Cool Beats, ahead of its time.

Derry girls made me add on two stars

Wall to wall bangers

I had forgotten how much I liked this album considering my copy was stolen 15+ years ago.

Absolutely loved it and got me hyped for seeing FS next week in Brighton

some good early 2000s house and uk techno whatever the hell. not bad and has some bangers, also some really cool ideas

It's not particularly original, just better produced than his previous album. (7/10) FT: Praise You, Love Island

What else can I add? Yeh feels a little dated now. But yeh, if you know, you know.

Man, “The Rockafeller Skank” takes me back to childhood. So good. I’m very happy to know there’s a whole album of that energy. This is a really fun album with an abundance of personality. Other highlights: “Gangster Trippin,” “Soul Surfing,” “You’re Not From Brighton,” “Praise You,” “Love Island” (wow, the bass on that one!)

Yesss! I had some kind of EP (or home made ripped CD) of theirs with "Right Here Right Now", "Rockafellar Skank" and "Praise You" on it, so that was really my first taste of more modern electronic music and I dug it! Reading the Wiki, it looks like a lot of tracks have "Sample credits", which I am slowly learning is common among the genre. I used to be like "just make your own shit", but now I think I'm starting to get it.

This album was such a guilty pleasure for me when I was a kid. All of my friends were into heavy metal as was I, but I would listen to these tracks and love them in secret. (side note - guilty pleasures - what a silly thing). It's a great album. Only listening now do I find that this album has some tracks that are very videogame soundtrack-y.

Best Song: Praise You. Even though this is one of the three big songs I'd heard before, the vocal sample here is just too good, and used too effectively, for it not to be the number one. Worst Song: In Heaven. You can just tell that the artist thought that the vocal sample was cooler and edgier than it actually is. Overall: One thing that I found Fatboy Slim is the master of on this album is holding things - notes, patterns, looping samples - longer than I feel many artists have the courage to hold things. The effect is that often, for these extended repeated sequences, I found myself going through this entire trajectory of liking whatever new sound he introduced, growing tired of it and wishing it would end, but then pushing through to some point where it felt like it had wormed itself fully into my brain. I know this idea obviously isn't unique among electronic artists, but I think that Fatboy Slim does it tremendously here.

What an album this was! One of the hottest to come out that era, packing the energy of a few atom bombs. I still remember the sheer joy of playing FIFA 99 just so I could listen to Rockafeller Skank again and again (the game was great, too; it was the era before loot boxes took over). Add Right Here Right Now and Praise You into the mix, and you have an armada of smash hits with great videos to match. There are too many fillers in the album, and it has dated by now, but it's still good.

It starts off well, but the tracks become very samey.

A stone-cold classic in its way, not all to my liking, but there are some truly seminal musical moments on this album.

This was a fun album. I had heard several songs from the record, but didn't realize they were Fatboy Slim. I'm down for it!

Cool sound.

Surprised by how many songs I knew, seems to have been everywhere even more than I noticed at the time. Gangster Trippin is still my favourite, but the album as a whole is so good, and so consistent, that it works best as a piece.

LE-GEN-DA-RY! You may not know who they are, but you definitely heard the songs

They had such a distinct sound. It's really surprising that they caught on, but they were smart enough to know it would. Their samples are iconic, and most importantly, they know what they are and offer no pretense. HIp-Hop can be heavily hyperbolized and degrading, but they are able to be mostly real, innovative, and take aim on interesting subjects...like Bill Laimbeer. I think Sabotage is the perfect example of what they are. It's a great track, produced perfectly and timeless. This album is way better than I expected it to be.

Well, this is something of a classic - there are some brilliant singles on here and of course, an all time favourite album track, Love Island. There's not really a lot to say about this, except it was great when everybody started getting into Fatboy because I'd been a big beat enthusiast since I bought a weird grey covered Skint record with a name I could barely read and thought it just said FATBOD SLIM... you have indeed, come a long way baby.

Bangers

fy vad bra och fortfarande fräscht 20 år senare

Lots of bops and different-ish vibes from the songs.

i like the idea of this album

The production was great on this, the drums, the timing. I like how he changes tempo so suddenly and it still works, goes half time, double time. The craziest part about this album was that it felt like it could've just been released, it must have been way ahead of its time. I hear this album's influence in a lot of EDM artists (Skrillex, Don Diablo, Griz, Bassnectar). Favorite songs - Rockefeller Skank, Gangster Trippin, Build it up Tear it Down, You're Not From Brighton

Probably really a 3* album (although there are a handful of great tracks, to be fair) but I listened to this so much as a kid that the nostalgia trip it provided boosted the overall listening experience.

great tunes. takes me back

More guitars than I'd have assumed. Fun album, especially the last track.

nostalgiaaaaaa

Fun album.

I knew going into this record that I would enjoy it, but a closer listen didn't disappoint. It depends on looped samples to a fault, but the seams, especially those in the vocal lines, end up as tasty imperfections. The sides are reasonably distinct: A has the hits and the self-reference, B a couple deeper cuts and a melodic surprise at the end, C brings the drums over melody as such, and D takes a beautiful left turn. One has to be prepared for repetition in form, but it rides on strength of execution.

Very cool. I liked his work before but had never heard a full album.

the nostalgia is strong with this one

Iconic! Remember dancing around to this back in the day. Saw him live at Latitude a few years agonand he was smokin’ hot! Love it!

Maximum 90s

I didn’t really care for this type of music as a teen when it released but upon release as an adult, I really enjoyed a number of tracks.

Great album that highlights the rising digital creative scene.

Classic, great rhythms and beats. I think this album contains 3 of my favorite songs.

Liked it!

A solid album although starting to sound a little bit dated.

Pretty damn good even outside of the classics.

I love this album. Still so cool!

Really cool!

No one has made better electronic music that it's actually listenable and enjoyable, not only at rave parties so much as anywhere else, than Fatboy Slim. And this album alone, it's just a pure gem in the uplifting 90's music.

Here we go. This is a formative album for me. It's of the few albums that managed to cut across the divide at school between all the dullard "real music" britpop bores, and the super cool kids like me listening to electronic music. It drips with pop appeal but manages to keep a pretty cool edge. Album opener Right Here Right Now, sampling the wonderful Angela Bassett from the film Strange Days is an absolute powerhouse of a tune. Big lush and emotive. I remember being blown away hearing this on a mixtape for the first time. It doesn't quite tingle the spine as much today but it's a fine track. Rockafella Skank is amazing, it epitomises the bright and breezy pop appeal of the album. In a sea of po faced indy wankers it's not hard to see why tracks like this stood out. Fucking In Heaven at first glance feels like a bit of filler but I ended up loving the funky breaks thing going on here. It stands up better than some of the more overt big beat tracks like Build it Up Tear It Down. Big beat was a light that burned so very bright but for a very short period of time, so sounds very much of they're time. Gangster Tripping sandwiched between those two is another that was hammered on the radio. This really is a rare album for me. One that I both hold in fond regard personally and one where many of the singles were widely popular. You'd hear this wafting out of car windows, playing in shops or whatever. Kinda makes me wish I enjoyed more popular music. Or at least that the music I like was more popular. Anyway, as we get into the second half of the album there's still plenty to enjoy. Kalifornia is another nice breakbeat number, bringing in daftpunkesque vocoder type voice. I don't remember the breaks tracks being as strong as this. Soul Surfing was always a favourite, he used to chop this into his DJ sets, possibly works better as a DJ tool than an album track, but meh, it's still fun. But the time we get to You're Not From Brighton though it's feeling like it needs a bit of a change up. Which happily is delivered with the album's most successful single, the (amongst others) Camille Yarbrough sampling Praise You. Fatboy Slim always seems to work best when things seem at their most simple. Catchy vocal sample, breakbeat, bang. He's got a tremendous ear for it, as seen with his ace renegade master. Love Island brings a bit of of an urgency, with some driving beats as we get to the end of the album. This is more club gear really but it still fits pretty nicely here. Acid 8000 brings things to a bit bombastic squelchy end. These are not the cross over tracks, but they show off Cook's club chops. He could still get the cooler dancefloors jamming .I saw him play Back2Basics a few years after this and it was absolutely mega. He probably gets a bit of stick for being the first pop crossover DJ, but he's done it better than most.

Such a throwback!

Good memories

shockingly good the middle gets slow but there are a lot of bangers to go around 4.5

Not my normal music but pleasantly surprised.

Difficult to rate as I loved this album when it came out, listening to it now it's everything I hate about mainstream dance, but it does have some genuinely great hooks in there. could give it any score based on how I feel that day. 4 seems generous but fair

Bijzonder rap genre. goed gedaan en ik kan het waarderen maar niet zoveel als eerst.

90's Big Beat what's not to like about this Album, the mixture of humour and serious point making continues to make this relevant 23 years later. But the reality is you can't separate the music from the videos really. "Rockafella Skank" and "Praise You" are stand outs for me. Just love his inventiveness and his cheeky British lad like humour. "Right Here, Right Now" rightfully a classic in it's own right. Good Stuff all round.

Honestly, this album was more consistently good than I thought it was going to be. It's got a distinctive style, but manages to pack a lot of different moods into the album 4/5

Good stuff. My only criticism is that the tracks are each just a little too long, but that's pretty minor and probably just a side effect of the genre

Dope beatz

All bangers

Super fun!

This is better than the last FBS album. The question is whether it's enough to get it a higher rating. I think it is and I also like the cover.

When FBS spun the first 2 tracks of this LP at the Olympic Games closing ceremony in London, I got a better idea of how popular and influential he was/is. His ability to construct catchy, surfy tracks using obscure samples is amazing. He still enjoys assaulting your ears a little too much with noise and repetition for my liking, otherwise it would be a 5 for me – that and the fact that the original of Praise You is superior to his bland remix. My CD had the record library cover but I love this original (UK) album cover from the fat people’s festival – the cigarette is a nice touch!

Took me back….

That cover photo is taken from Fat Peoples Festival, in Danville 1983, and the guy is still not identified. But was there ever a festival like that? Rabbit hole warning! https://www.reddit.com/r/nonmurdermysteries/comments/lw1wlj/the_identity_of_the_man_on_fatboy_slims_album/ And the the songs are great too! Best: Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Trippin, Praise You.

Was one of my favourite albums growing up, and whilst it has lost some of its edge for me, and I can see maybe some flaws that I didn't when younger, I still think it has great energy and gets me wanting to dance and have fun.

kind of cool to listen to it with headphones. I feel like it changes the experience to a more active one.

I know what Fatboy Slim is!

Good album, listened to many times.

A classic

Never listened to an electronic album before, so I was skeptical but became pleasantly surprised. Each song is long, and you'd think it would be repetitive, but there's enough variation to keep you interested. The best example is The Rockafeller Skank which is just a single line repeated over 7 minutes, but Fatboy Slim's experimental movements are almost classical. With the exception of "Praise You", I did feel the second side was weaker in the first, but you can tell Fatboy Slim is having fun.

Pretty good, I did enjoy it a lot but to me in some ways it hadn't aged well. Still a few bangers though.

A really good album some great songs on the album contains songs that I would listen to again and again 4/5

"Right Here, Right Now" is good, I like the violins they incorporated. Hey I know "The Rockafeller Skank" "In Heaven" has a good beat, but not in love with the lyrics. "Ganster Trippin" has a good beat. Not much to the lyrics. I'm finding the album has good beats but no substance to the lyrics. "Build It Up, Tear It Down" is good to work to. "Kalifornia" is a bop. "Soul Surfing" hey, some lyrics! Sort of. "You're Not From Brighton" I was bopping but didn't listen cuz work. "Praise You" hey I know this one too! "Love Island" is the only one that doesn't really seem to fit with the rest. "Acid 8000" ok this one doesn't fit quite with the rest either but I like the techno. Overall I like the album. It doesn't have much in the way of lyrics but it's easy to work to.

Ground-smashing.

Qué disco más guapo de electrónica. Praise You me la pongo en bucle, pero además tiene las icónicas Right Here Right Now y Rockafeller Skank. Un gustazo.

Great album. Still makes your feet wanna move. One star off for 'Fucking In Heaven'. That one is annoying.

Massive break beats, very accessible electronic music fused with soul and funk, mostly. Great running soundtracks.

Super fun stuff. Could have been a 5, but a little bit of bloat just holds it back.

Big beats are the best beats. Get high all the time. Best Tracks: Right Here Right Now, Rockafeller Skank, Praise You

Unreal

Pelkästään Right Here Right Now'sta ja Rockafeller Skankin nostamista fiiliksistä voisi Pläskipoika Hoikkikselle antaa vitosen. Rockafeller Skank on syöpynyt jonnekin syvälle, koska se oli pleikkarilla FIFA99:n introssa... Right about now, the funk soul brother, check it out now, .... Loppulevyä en Praise You biisiä lukuunottamatta ollut kuullut, eikä levyn muut biisit nyt mitään erityisen sykähdyttäviä olleet. Tai sitten en vaan päässyt yli tymäkän alun nostamasta fiiliksestä. Kuitenkin pelkästään juuri tästä levyn aloituksen ansiosta hyvällä omalla tunnolla perusvahva nelonen (5,8%).

Jaaa, coole plaat!

Voor het eerst eens helemaal en op koptelefoon geluisterd. Wat een geweldenaar! Nothing but hits en supercatchy.

Classic Norman

A classic. I love The Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Trippin, and Soul Surfing. I wouldn't just listen to the album probably, but it's great party music.

Very good, great flow. Songs were a bit long, but all bangers. Obvi faves were the hits, but You're not from Brighton was a happy surprise :)

Always liked this album, but the Chemical Brother's Dig Your Own Hole is probably my fave big beat album from the late 90's.

Real dancey upbeat bops, while the middle blends together a bit the high points outweigh the lows

Bon album techno j’aivraiment aime hehe 4.25*

Spent a lot of time with this one many years ago. Love the energy

Just really good electro-dancepop that is chock full of earworms and bangers. If I would consider the transcendent music videos, if give it another star.

Fatboy slim is so fun. RHRN, Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Tripin, Praise You, etc.

"The Rockafeller Skank" and "Praise You" were the two songs I knew. I heard "Praise You" recently on the radio and didn't know it was FBS and thought it was a new artist, so I think a lot of this has aged well. I especially like the stutter-vocals on Praise You that keeps going for a long time, a technique I am surprised to not hear more often in music honestly. There is a playfulness in the tracks that I really appreciate, it's just fun music but also the breakbeats and DJ-style mixing adds a depth to it. There are some somewhat cheesy 90s sounding acid-techno style squelching synths that feel a bit dated, but this was the 90s. The deluxe edition is a bit too long though, I'd cut it down in half personally. But, that original length album exists, so that's the one I'd listen to as a first time listener. Still really hard for me to rate. It's a 3.5 in terms of enjoyment, but I will round up to 4.

Very nostalgic album for me. Good to listen to in full. I may come back to it at some point.

Could use a party right about now...

Big beats and big boys. Liked more than I thought I would

Recognized a lot of these songs. Would listen again

Check it out now, the funk soul brotha.

Good tunes.

Definitely very dated. A few bangers tho.

crazy sound

i have my favorites off this album but by the end of it i realized how most of the songs couldve been cut short to half their length it became very monotonous but still fun to jam to

Sample based big beat music. Coachella-core. Music that is fun if you just want to dance. You’re not pouring a finger of scotch and putting this on the hi-fi for an evening of active listening.

It’s good. A bit high energy for my boring ass self

At times 'You've Come a Long Way Baby' is both Infectious and inventive, featuring impressive four and five-star hooks but those hooks unfortunately outstay their welcome across repetitive, overly long tracks. While this approach works to some degree - offering a fun, engaging listen if you are in the right mood - some pruning was definitely needed on what becomes an unduly long 58-minute record. For this reason, while individual elements certainly deserve a four- or five-star ratings, as a complete album it achieves three stars 1 "Right Here, Right Now" (3/5) 2 "The Rockafeller Skank" (4/5) 3 "Fucking in Heaven" (2/5) 4 "Gangster Tripping" (3/5) 5 "Build It Up – Tear It Down" (2/5) 6 "Kalifornia" (2/5) 7 "Soul Surfing" (2/5) 8 "You're Not from Brighton" (3/5) 9 "Praise You" (5/5) 10 "Love Island" (3/5) 11 "Acid 8000" (2/5) Total - 31 Average - 2.8 362/1001 192/362 albums reviewed were new to me.

Not my genre of choice but good for what it is.
