Excellent album. Great vibes. Would match well with an active but overcast day.

Very good collections of soul songs. His voice was amazing.

Such a good soul record

i liked this one. otis redding has a great voice and does some solid covers. I'll be coming back to these for sure. favorites: respect, my girl, wonderful world, i can't get no satisfaction

liked it very much.

Classic soul record. "My Girl", "Respect" and that cover of the Stones' "Satisfaction" are among Otis Redding's most famous cuts, even though they're not my favourite songs performed by him (plus, Aretha Franklin's version of "Respect" totally erased the original version in popular consciousness). Conversely, "I've Been Loving You Too Long" is a gem I will always cherish. The rest plays out smoothly--some of the tracks sound a little samey, but maybe my ears are at fault here. I guess four stars is the minimum I can give to such a classic. Yet I would be lying if I said I was overly enthusiastic about *Otis Blue* as a full-length release. It has peaks, but it also has a few valleys... 1965 is also the year Nina Simone released *I Put A Spell On You* and *Pastel Blues*. I know Simone and Redding didn't exactly play in the same league, yet I can't help compare the two here, probably because my obsession about Nina Simone worsened during the last few weeks (listening to "Sinnerman" right now). And I have to say that as nicely done as *Otis Blue* is, it can't bring me to the heavens Nina sends me to. Another reason to only give four stars to Otis' record. It's probably unfair. But it's not more unfair than Dimery and co. ignoring Simone's *Little Girl Blue*, *In Concert*, *I Put A Spell On You* and *Pastel Blues* in their own list. Number of albums left to review: 432 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 264 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 137 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 170

Otis, My Man!!!!

I’m a sucker for a good cover song and some of these are on par with the originals.

None of my favorite Redding songs on this album but it was still good. The covers are a bit hit and miss for me but it's cool to hear where he was heading in later albums. Still one of musics greatest "what if's" if he had had the time to make more albums. Think my favourite was "Down in the Valley". A weak 4 from me.

Slick and powerful. Otis Redding is one under rated artist that doesn't get the props he should be getting. A lot of contemporaries get the accolades. This man was a genius. Great album.

Good album, had a load of originals on it that I was surprised to learn came from Otis Redding

Lol! Old people music!!! (I like this album)

Pretty good.Otis redding singing some classic 60s songs. He had a very nice voice.

Classic soul. Not much else to say, but since I’ve stopped getting so many R&B or funk artists, it’s nice to get another from the genre. I really like all the songs on this album, though it’s not really made as a cohesive work for the most part, which is why it gets a 4 as opposed to a 5. Not much else to say, really.

A brilliant album full of hits that many may have heard all their lives, but never listened to back to back. Artisanal.

i love him so much but Aretha Franklin really dookied all over any chance of me ever enjoying the original version of respect

This man will get emotional over anything and everything, but it translates into some pretty good music. One complaint, he changes around the lyrics a bit too much. So much "loving," the bees envy me? Favorite track: Respect.

Otis sure did sing soul

Love my girl

Sounds so soulful, don’t you agree? Love Otis’ scratchy voice and the bright ass horns used to back it. The tracks aren’t overly complex, only a few spots even pull in backing vocals. It simply doesn’t need anything extra, it’s that good.

Pretty stellar soulful blues collection. Essentially every song is recognizable and i had not heard his covers of Wonderful World and Satisfaction before. I absolutely love Change Gonna Come. Great album.

Old School Blues. Guet. 3 bis 4 Sterne. Mal luege ebs dänn für 4 langet. 4 Stern. Eifach wäg dä epische Songs.

Otis sounds awesome. Not sure about this album though. Would it be better if it weren't mostly covers? (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction is especially cringe. Overall it's a fun listen and I'd be glad to do it again.

Awesome band, as tight as two coats of paint with one of the great soul. interpreters

4.5 stars. Otis Redding sings the blues. A soul album by the King of Soul. Lots of covers and very impressive that he recorded all but one song in 24 hours. But there are three originals - including a pre-Aretha Franklin "Respect" - and his voice is just so profound this record is a joy.

My Girl is peak music. I’ve heard this before, and it was great to revisit. 8/10.

There aren't many vocalists that I'm either drawn to or excite me - on the contrary most singers annoy or are just a distraction. Be holistic ffs - my biggest complaint about modern music isn't really the music it's the production - i.e. I like to hear singers as just another instrument, not the weighted blanket on top of all those cozy sheets. Otis Redding is an exception. He was awesome and not in an over-the-top way. Just perfect for the music - I guess there's a good reason for this being considered the first definitive soul/r&b album. I always forget that he wrote "Respect" Anyways - this seems to break a few rules for me or maybe I'm just a hypocrite: vocally-featured* record consisting of mostly covers is something that would turn me off by definition but you can't be in a bad mood listening to this album. 8/10 4 stars. *the backing band is worth another play of the record to focus on them a bit. Never overplaying but at the same time not just a backing track by any means. n.b. I'm not a big fan of mono releases (yes yes purists "BUT THAT'S HOW IT WAS INTENDED" meh sue me - I like a good sounding recording.) but that's what I'm listening to - with a few exceptions I mostly avoid re-releases that add on 49 demos, live versions, and outtakes

Excellent covers. But Aretha has the best cover of all

pretty good covers

Soulful and iconic.

Great blues/rock album. Loved the covers and sounds of this entire album.

I liked Otis’ takes on some of these covers, as well as the heavy trumpet moments! He’s got soul and this was fun to listen to.

A blues cover album. Some are great covers, some are a little off. In a perfect world, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction would be known as an Otis Redding song.

Quite a few covers that I don't think are the best versions, but still really good. Funnily Respect is his, but isn't done best by him. Overall a good listen.

gran disco

Some classic covers by a legendary musician! I wasn't quite a fan of the Respect one, but every other one was fantastic.

Can't beat the voice of Otis Redding

I've got soul but I'm not a soldier

I've been looking for a good blues album as I'm not very familiar with the genre, and this is exactly what I was looking for! Even though it doesn't feature Otis Redding's most famous song, this is definitely a worthy introduction to the genre.

7.5/10. Incredible voice. Iconic artist. Great soulful album. Contemporary of Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones and it shows.

It's Otis Redding, what can you say. So many great songs on this album, Respect, Change is gonna come, Down in the Valley, My Girl, Wonderful World, and Satisfaction. The rest of the album is great as well, overall a solid soul album sung by one of the greatest voices in history

Great stuff. I don’t love some of the cover versions and the production isn’t great but what a voice.

This was probably the first classic soul album I heard and I loved it, his voice is magical and the entire album is really well put together. I specially loved A Change Is Gonna Come and I've Been Loving You Too Long.

I really enjoyed this album quite a lot. I mean come on that's Otis Redding!

What a voice, what a legend. Amazing that he wrote Respect, considering everyone associates it with Aretha.

Beautiful soul. Everything sounds great but I'm gonna go with a 4 due to it mostly being covers.

Good album! Loved it!

Otis is always a good listen. I hadn't realized he did a version of "Satisfaction" it was strange, but I'm here for it. Great album!

good. not my style of music generally. some songs are familiar.

Otis, my man!

Beautiful album. You can feel these songs in your soul and the heartache that when into this album. Otis Redding is a master at what he does and nuts just incredible to hear! Also just some are nice to dance too hahah!

Lovely stuff, untouchable really - the GOAT of melancholy soul

Exemple : "I've been lovin y... distance : 2km duration 14 minutes 08, 142 kilocalories burnt".

My father listened to the local oldies station what I was growing up and multiple songs from this were staples. I suppose I do have some nostalgia for it. But I'd never listened with a critical ear before today. It's good. Ole Man Trouble was a nice opener. I think this record sounds very much the same throughout. Which is frustrating. Otherwise, this is alright.

Bangin’

Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul is one album that'll have you feeling more soulful than a demon trying to possess Aretha Franklin's body. This album is chock full of classics that'll have you tapping your foot and snapping your fingers faster than my healing factor kicks in. From "Respect" to "I've Been Loving You Too Long," this album is an absolute gem that'll have you feeling like you can take on the world. So if you're looking to add some serious soul to your playlist, then Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul is the album for you. And if you don't like it, well then I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. But seriously, who doesn't like this album? It's pure gold, baby!

Beautiful buttery voice with a bite. Standout track for me is Down in the Valley

Rock me baby

Nice med det

Just some great soul with nice arrangements. Sometimes it doesn’t need to be more than that

Supa banga

Classic stuff

Man, Otis Redding is just awesome.

Approached with trepidation... but this was a cut above most the soul albums on here.

Lot of great songs in here

Very nice album.

Huge Otis fan, and was hoping to get some of his albums on here, was surprised to see them include a cover album but others have had theirs on here too so I'll be grateful. This was very enjoyable, especially on those covers I know like Respect, My Girl, Wonderful World, Satisfaction. Interesting album cover, not sure what the meaning is behind that.

Loved it, always good to listen to.

Goddamn that guy could sing. What a great voice, and some great songs with great arrangements. 4 stars.

I would describe his singing style as both incredibly smooth and somewhat unhinged 4/5

A fun listen overall. Short but sweet. I really enjoyed his cover of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, it was weird hearing it like this but it might be a bit better than the original. Songs I Already Knew: Respect, My Girl, Wonderful World, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (As performed by other artists.) Songs I Really Liked: Ole Man Trouble, Down In The Valley, Shake, Wonderful World, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

I like Otis. He seems to do a number of covers Hits: A Change is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke Cover) My Girl (Alexis Arielle)

- don’t think I realized how many classics are Otis - oh my god, every song hahah

Otis Redding sings a bunch of classics while Booker T, & The M.G.'s back him up. Tough to not like this one although tracks like 'Rock Me Baby' feels a bit out of place.

While there is no denying Booker T (the non-wrestling one) & M.G.’s excellent work on Otis Blue, it is Otis Redding himself that steals the entire show. Otis Redding possessed a voice like very few before or after his untimely death. Powerful, emotional, raw, pained and in total control. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. For me personally, songs like “Shake” and “Rock Me Baby” keeps this from being the perfect album it is often made to be. But looking at the rest of the track list I am almost inclined to ignore those songs and just go with it. Almost.

Nice vibes added 4 of the songs 7/10 overall

8/10 Suprising number of classics on here.

Oooh it's rather lovely. Even if a lot of these songs have definitive versions that are better by other artists, there aren't many songs yo wouldn't want to hear Otis' take on. Maybe Shaddap You Face?

Redding told the story with his voice and inflection. The music was just supplemental. I will be listening to this again

I guess it shows my age but I did not realize Otis Redding was a big soul guy - like a James Brown-like soul guy. And I guess that's because I really only knew The Dock of the Bay and I didn't see that as soul. The man has got chops, though Booker T and the MGs also provide great backing. I hate covers so that holds this album back a bit for me. I enjoyed his originals Ole Man Trouble and I've Been Loving You Too Long the most (the latter is a beauty). Even though Respect is a Redding original, Aretha has outdone him so it paled. I did like his Sam Cooke redo's though, Change Gonna Come (real soulful) and Shake (good upbeat twist), and his redo of the Stones' Satisfaction (cool beat). But in my opinion he's bested on most of the other covers (Down in the Valley, My Girl, Wonderful World - another Cooke cover, Rock Me Baby). I don't know about You Don't Miss Your Water because I don't know the original - but I do like his version. Still, ballsy taking on those other big tunes, especially so soon after they were recorded. But it's hard to do them better when you try to not mess with the original (My Girl) or try to change it up a bit (Rock Me Baby). Real catch-22. Still a very solid album but could've been more I think with more originals.

Lovely voice and some very nice renditions of these songs. Not sure if it'll ever be the top of the list of what I want to listen to, but I'm not gonna complain either. Solid 4.

Love this voice. A nice, quick listen.

Funk, soul, blues, I've heard quite a few albums befitting of those three things on this list so far and I'm not even at 200 yet. However I think they all deserve to be here and all of them are great. They're not something I'd usually seek out to listen to, but I always find them pleasant and enjoyable every time they're on. This was no exception - it made for nice music to unwind to after a thoroughly stressful day. These were all some nice covers, and while it's not something I'd usually listen to, it was nice. Favourite: Respect

Better then i had expected. Maybe not the best version of some of these songs. Taken as a whole, pretty enjoyable.

Was really enjoyable. Some very well known songs, some done differently than I've heard before. Not familiar with this recording before listening, but will probably listen again.

Listens: 4 Enjoyed: yes Just an absolute classic

Just awesome listen through and a lot of good covers

A triumphant soul cover record that gets most things right. A passionate and versatile vocalist, crisp production (for 1965), catchy recognizable tunes, and an outstanding backing band consisting of Booker T, the Mar-Keys, and Isaac Hayes. Although its hard for me to argue whether any of these are better than the popular versions many of us grew up on, it certainly does them justice, and you could certainly mistake some of these for his own compositions. I was not expecting "Satisfaction" to work so well with his formula. One of my complaints is that it goes too much back and forth with loud dance tracks and slow emotional tracks that you don't know how to feel next. All in all, no bad tracks, and felt quick with its short 36 minute length.

Smooth and beautiful. Incredible vocal performance. Not much to be said here. I think I sort of have a problem with those oldies as I love putting them on as a background but can't get too invested into their actual content. Maybe it's because they've become such a standard at this point it's hard to be bothered to find something new and exciting?

classic soul

Soul con versiones de canciones conocidas. Un 4.

Arguably the most influential album I've heard so far. It was good, and there were some stand out amazing tracks. Surprised my gut says 4/5, but I don't want to minimize how good this was. None of the songs made their way to my best of playlist which is a need for a star

Loved it. My only bone to pick is the amount of covers that leave it feeling like less of a cohesive album.

Dudes got soul.

Loving You Too Long is the best. Interesting to hear Respect before Aretha Franklin took it over.

Soul music is just good for the soul, and Otis Redding is a wonderful example of that. He breathes new life into these songs, and makes the record appear like it's full of originals even though the opposite is true. Although some of them aren't as good as the originals, they still have that soulful Redding touch that makes them worth listening to. Standouts are A Change is Gonna Come, Down in the Valley, I've Been Loving You Too Long, My Girl, and Wonderful World.

Well - it's Otis. Terrible cover art though

Very nice. It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize it was a cover album.

This goes so hard lol, I only docked one point because I liked the original songs more than the covers

He's so good

So many good songs

Impressive amount of hits and a diverse sound

Nice, soothing R&B

I always thought Otis Redding was a man. And after a bit of research, it appears he is. This album cover is quite misleading. Whatever gender, this is a great soul record. It comprises excellent covers of classic songs, which makes it easy to enjoy. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Respect Date listened: 21/12/22

Very nice jazzy cool music

otis soul: otis blueing sings blues by otis blueing

Buenas canciones, mala grabacion

very nice songs too short

Super awesome

Had no idea he wrote some of these.

Really solid album. So many memorable songs packed in about a half hour of music.

Classic stuff.

Really enjoyable listen, he's a fabulous singer. I love Ole Man Trouble. slight nagging feeling through several of the songs as I find myself enjoying them slightly less than other versions of the same song. Possible exceptions being Rock me Baby and Satisfaction. But yeah, really good.

Great soul and blues

Well this was a joy. It was all the ones you want to hear from OT. What talented writer and singer. Such warm soulful music that puts you in a great mood. Loved it

Just delightful

I like

Wonderful and rich album. That voice!

I was a bit disappointed by the cover and thought this would be boring. Never judge a rekid by its cover!

Some of the covers on here are in a word, better, than the original versions. Otis has a voice that is unmatched and I serious felt every single solidarity emotion coming from that man. What a legend, what a voice, what a recording.

That voice.

Not menpreferee typ

Filled with classic soul songs and a phenomenal voice

Very pleasant listen. Was surprised to find out the origin of a few popular songs. Standout tracks: My Girl, Wonderful World, I've Been Loving You Too Long, A Change Is Gonna Come

Heaps of familiar tunes and had to double check if Satisfaction was actually a Stone's original. Who wrote/who covered what gets confusing around this period.

So many hits! Start to finish this album is solid and has some of my favorite versions of the covers done on it.

Really enjoyed this one 4/5

Otis was one of the great song interpretators, someone who could turn most any track into a unique vision that only he could pull off. This mau be his best collection of studio performances, and I bet they must have been cracking live. A-

A record full of outstanding performances by a legend of music.

Short and sweet, enjoy the listening experience very much

Warm, sunny, great tunes - it's not ground breaking, but it's a really good listen. Otis' interpretation of some classic songs are beautiful and highly listenable.

toujours bienvenu

What a voice. Couple tracks are merely okay, but the rest are top notch.

Brilliant songs

09/28/2022 Yeah. We’ll just never have a talent like this again in our lifetimes. This genre is called soul for a reason, and god Otis Redding did it the very fucking best. — Today sucked FAT. Thankfully, I’m in bed and better now but holy shit. Stubbed tf out of my toe, got fucked over on a group project, and was just overall done with the day. It’s straight up a fight for me to keep showing up to studio, it’s just truly the worst. I hate everyone in my studio so so much.

It is Otis Redding singing what are essentially the pop songs of his day. Whether or not this earns a spot in 1001 is anyone's debate, but getting to hear a Blues legend take other people's music for a spin and make it his own is a treat for listeners, and this reviewer is glad for it.

Iconic voice singing some fantastic songs. Change Gonna Come, My Girl, and I've Been Loving You Too Long are all too important to be left off this list, hence it being here. Standout blues for the ages.

Listened Before? N A great album full of classic soul covers. I enjoyed this a lot. It's just staples front-to-back. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: My Girl

4.5. Very nice

Great sounds, enchanting voice, timeless compositions

15/09/22

Classic Otis versions of soul songs. Worth listening to, but MUCH better Otis albums exist.

Loved very mellow

This dude literally touched my soul when his hit this high notes

Was not expecting to enjoy this as mush as I did, some of these covers almost feel like the original was the cover.

I liked it

Even though most of these are covers, I felt every single one. They all give off their own sound and really make you feel when Otis sings. Top tier.

08/30/2022 I can't think of a time when I've heard of this artist by name, but I'm pretty sure I have heard at least 2 of these songs. This was a good album, I didn't realize this type of music is considered "soul". I thought it'd to be more like rock. Which by the way, it seems pretty advanced for its time. Listening to "Shake" currently and I wouldn't say it came from 1965. I really liked the songs "A change is gonna come", "Down in Valley", and last but not least "You don't miss your water". And ofc "my girl" is unsaid.

So this was just an enjoyable listen from start to finish. I'm hesistant to give it 5 stars for a couple of reasons. 1) the fact that only three songs are originals 2) the covers don't have a particularly unique spin on them, they just sound good 3) I can't see myself putting this album on to really listen to it, though I do see myself putting it on in the background while making dinner, etc.

If Otis Redding covers your song, there is a real risk that it'll become an "Otis Redding song" for all of history ¹, and you'll need the likes of Aretha Franklin if you want to get it back ². ¹ "Ole Man Trouble", "Respect" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long" are the only Otis Redding compositions on here, the rest are covers. ² "Respect" was infamously covered by Aretha Franklin, and her version is now considered to be the definitive one.

The album is a solid three stars production wise. But since these songs are the basis of Redding's absolutely stellar Monterey Pop show, I'll give it four stars. His performance of I've Been Loving You Too Long in particular is the epitome of soul music. You could say the same for his recording of Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, which isn't on this list unfortunately.

Good god almighty! Loved all of the songs.

This one has the soul I crave. Oh lord almighty.

This was an interesting listen - all they all cover tunes? Don't know - don't care. Pretty much the whole thing had me feeling mellow and....cozy? Couldn't place it. Why is Otis Reading making me crave hot chocolate and peppermint? Then it hit me - Otis singing "White Christmas" is the background to a classic Love Actually scene ("I hate Uncle Jamie!"). So other than subconsciously reminding me of Christmas, this is good stuff. Carol singers? Tell 'em to bugger off. No, on second thought...I'll go have a listen.

This album hits hard and is full of hits.

Profound and well organized. Old but still feels like it has been produced recently and the emotions are kept intact. Love the pace.

Good music. Lots of covers so was familiar, but maybe more originals would have been better.

brilliant.

8/10. Good performances of good songs.

Really nice listen. Nice mix of bangers and slow cuts and the band covers the songs really well. Otis’ vocals are really good at conveying the emotion of these songs and he does the originals great justice. 8/10

Brilliant.

Hehe, eindelijk weer eens een album geluisterd. Otis is fijn.

Slapping hard aren't we mr. Redding? cant believe this was recorded within a day, my god! yes this is a "cover" album but I don't think that concept existed back then (almost all albums were cover albums weren't they?) but it has I've been loving you too long which is one of the greatest songs ever (do I hear the "creep" progression in it?) I love this.

pretty good, lots of good songs

2 hours long, strong. Lots of bangers

This kind of music is right up my alley already, but this album had the added benefit of being the originator (I think) of classic songs like satisfaction and what a wonderful world. So both an enjoyable and interesting album

4 Classic R&B/Soul. I always forget how influential Otis Redding was by originating hits such as ‘Respect’ and covering amazing songs like ‘My Girl’ and ‘Satisfaction’. Less funk and more blues. Certainly more timeless. Other favorites include ‘Ole Man Trouble’, ‘Shake’, and ‘Change is Gonna Come’

4 Having only heard "Sittin in the Dock of the Bay" before this, I gotta say I really dig Otis' voice. He has one of those distinct voices you can identify just a few words into a song, and with the energy he puts into every performance on this record, to say he "sings" soul feels like an understatement. Despite most of the album I believe being covers, he really makes each song his own - to the point I actually think I prefer his rendition of "My Girl". Hearing the original version of "Respect" was also a nice surprise. There's no beating Aretha, but it seems the song came into existence already with a strong foundation in Redding's. Favorite songs: Ole Man Trouble, Respect, My Girl

Classic.

Very good, a classic. Did not realize he was covered so much.

suprised at how many songs I recognised

Wow, my first Otis Redding album. I was blown away. It did not disappoint. 4.5/5

Nice album of what sounds like mostly covers? Great, powerful vocals. 8/10.

An impressive display of soulful performance. Favorites: "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Down In the Valley", "My Girl"

Nautin kyllä Otiksen äänestä ja menosta. 4/5

Un 4.

Demasiado largo.

4, classics

It's sad to think that more than half of the songs on this album were written by Otis Redding or Sam Cooke, and that within two years of the release of this album, both of them would be dead (Cooke died prior to the recording of the album). Both incredible tragedies for the world of music, both for the loss of their voices and their masterful songwriting. Redding's massive talent is on full display here. What I wouldn't give for a higher quality of recording for this album. It's an issue that plagues a lot of these Stax recordings. Despite this, though, the beauty of these songs are undeniable. Even when he's covering famous songs, he always manages to make them his own 4/5

it was nice n groovy :) i enjoyed listening to it.

I felt a bit harsh only giving 'Back in Black' 3 stars so glad this came along to reinforce that it was reasonable. It's a bunch of covers and the songs I know (e.g. Respect, My Girl, Satisfaction) aren't as good as the originals but everything about this still sounds classic. That Stax houseband was so good

Wow. I mean, really, one of those special albums from which one just feels so much as it's played. I knew a lot more of the tracks than I would've guessed and was glad to discover the ones new to me. Fantastic.

Good covers of great songs. A good album to start the 1001 albums with

Otis was the man!

Smooth classic

Good stuff

Super solid. Only thing that doesn't click for me is the BB King cover which seems misplaced for some reason.

Prefs: Ole Man Trouble, Respect, Shake, My Girl, Wondeful World, Satisfaction Moins pref: Rock Me Baby

Enjoyed

Really good, listened to this a few times because it was good

It lives up to the praise - a fine selection of classic Otis Redding and Stax House band soul pop. A great listen. Fills you with sadness that we lost another star so early and not through self destruction this time.

This guy has the pipes. Damn good, but some unnecessary horns mixed throughout.

This is a great album but as is often the problem when there's an album with a bunch of covers, there are better versions out there for most of these. "Respect" is not a cover but there is also a better version elsewhere. Still great for what it is.

just lovely, smooth but gravelly, fun but sad

Much that's familiar, but also quite enjoyable.

3rd listen. 4/5. Some great Otis classics like I've Been Lovin' You Too Long, Respect (which Aretha Franklin's version became a classic). and Satisfaction (his version of the Rolling Stones classic is unique and soulful). Other Notable songs: You Don't Miss Your Water, Down in the Valley, Change Gonna Come, Rock me Baby, Wonderful World, and My Girl.

It was a good album with a lot of well known songs. It was enjoyable and I would listen to it again.

I find listening to a full album of soul is often difficult even with excellent signers. This album didn’t have that problem since there's a lot of diversity both in tempo and his vocal ranges.  It’s mostly covers but that was the era. It’s interesting that one of the few originals is Respect which is the song that is perhaps best known for the cover Aretha Franklin later did.  I remember the Stones covering “I’ve been loving you too long” on a terribly mixed recording that was their first live album. It’s interesting that the Stones cover of Otis and Otis’ cover of Satisfaction came so soon after the originals were released.  Did they do a pinky swear? Damn his version of Satisfaction is good.

The "O" in soul stands for Otis.

Really great listen with tons of classics. The highlight is definitely Redding’s vocals. Enjoyed listening, would put it on, but not the most mind blowing, impactful record I’ve heard. At least not personally. I think it’s because these songs are just cultural staples, we’ve heard them so many times it’s easy to become jaded. But taking time to sit down and hear the emotion in his voice is something special.

Love a change is gonna come, and the version of Satisfaction. A pretty satisfying soul album, although it doesn't include my fave of his - These Arms of MIne.

Great singer, lovely album, mostly covers but makes them his own, just misses out on 5 stars. I think this might become by go to Soul album.

This was smooth and soulful and exactly what I needed today. I can see this being on regular rotation.

I am not truly familiar with Otis Redding, Except for the hit songs (SITTIN' ON) THE DOCK OF THE BAY and TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS. I also know Aretha Franklin’s cover of RESPECT, which I was surprised to learn was composed by Otis (but I have not heard his original version). Interesting that Aretha changed the lyrics a bit to reflect a distinct perspective instead of just simply changing the gender. It makes me wonder with Aretha’s version does Otis get 100% of the royalties or zero or is there a split? I also knew the original version of MY GIRL from The Temptations, but not heard Otis' version. I really like Otis and this album. There is a good amount of consistency in the songs that are covered, and his soulful singing style adds spark. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, this is the only album included in the book. I would have thought with Otis he would have another entry. Rate Artist: OTIS REDDING (4.5) Rate Album (Year): OTIS BLUE/OTIS REDDING SINGS SOUL (1965 Original) (4.5)

Good stuff.

Pretty good. I've long liked classic soul and am of course familiar with Otis Redding, whose voice is top notch on this album. I particularly like his renditions of the two Sam Cooke songs A Change Is Gonna Come and Wonderful World, as well as You Don't Miss Your Water. It's not interesting or spectacular enough for 5 stars in my book, but certainly a good listen.

second greatest soul singer behind sam cooke. man otis could really sing

Otis Redding has an amazing voice that is a treat to listen to. However, many of these songs are covers with mixed results. "Satisfaction" with horns was pretty cool, but the chorus of "My Girl" was jarring to listen to with a solo singer as the harmonies have been replaced by awkward pauses and drawn-out notes. I had no idea that this was the original version of "Respect" but Aretha Franklin's cover is superior. Also, who/why is the random blonde lady on the cover?

Love Otis Redding. I have a live album of him (Good To Me: Live at the Whiskey A Go Go) that's just amazing. If you only know him from Dock of the Bay it's not obvious how great of soul singer he is. I'm not sure the recording quality here really captures him like the live album I have does but glad to see this on the list. Definitely an enjoyable listen.

Such a great listen. Great voice

Good relaxing music

Good stuff. Nice original songs and covers. Interesting to hear songs that went on to be much more famously done by other people.

Would definitely buy this one

Good saxophones. Tracks are short. Interesting in that it's basically a covers album. "Shake" has sampling potential I reckon. Didn't enjoy "Respect" much actually. Standouts for me: "Ole Man Trouble", "Shake", "Wonderful World"

I am so excited to see this album. I looove blues, soul, and Otis Redding.

Dried ingots of pure soul. Was a bit disappointed to learn most are covers, rather than the other way around. Went from 5 to 4

It was fun. Gotta get some good soul

This was the first album of this type of music I've ever listened to, and honestly I really liked it. It's music that my grandparents listen to but it's filled with soul. Everything blends together so well, whether it's the instruments or the vocals everything has it's place. I didn't know "satisfaction" from the rolling stones was a cover and I heard "my girl" on a commercial before. I feel like some of the songs dragged a bit but apart from that I enjoyed it very much and would definitely revisit it. 7.2/10

Consistently good throughout

A good set of covers, makes me want to listen to some more Sam Cooke

a pretty good album, i can definitely hear the motifs that would be repeated by other artists that would have heard this growing up. overall, a decent slapper

Awesome. Great musician.

solid.

The first song is called 'Ole Man Trouble' and it made me think of Ole's Man Utd trouble. Really needs a result against Villareal tonight. Robert Plant's favourite from this is 'Rock Me Baby'. He nonces babies. Otis Redding is pretty good.

main character moment

Great soul and blues. Highlights were definitely Respect, My Girl and Satisfaction.

I really liked the vibe of the whole album. "A Change is Gonna Come" sounds a whole lot like "I'm gonna find Another You" from John Mayer and I love it.

Really good album especially for covers

Soulful

Un classique du soul.j’adore 4.85

By the cover I thought Otis Blue was a female artist. Ended up finding out that no, Otis Blue is a male and, by the way, it's not even Blue, but Redding, which is cute but "Blue" would be nicer. Also, listened the album while writing and it worked well. Wrote a chronicle about eggs and crying. Anyways, it was very good. Particularly find "Wonderful world" kinda stupid but whatever. Some super famous songs like "My Girl" and "Satisfaction" are featured on this, which is, I imagine, the biggest reason why they would recommend this. Although, there are other bangers. Especially that intro track and "Down by the valley" This was the first soul album I've ever listened and I intend to go back to it and also search another records.

Busy and ambitious.

Classic.

What a good album. Emotion, grit. Very enjoyable listen.

Oooh this should be good. Yep this was a solid 4. Nothing life changing but good all the way through.

It's nice to hear Otis covering some classics. His voice is just so darn good. I like Sittin' By the Dock of the Bay but I feel like that's all I ever hear.

Great soulful singing. Did not know this was the first recording of Respect! Great covers of Satisfaction and My Girl too.

Redding's powerful, remarkable singing throughout makes Otis Blue gritty, rich, and achingly alive, and an essential listening experience.

God I fucking love Otis. An excellent, excellent record from an excellent performer, even if much of it is covers. Probably some of the best covers out there, if I'm being honest.

A generational talent. The songs muddle together a bit, but these are phenomenal covers - My Girl was a highlight, that shit sounds amazing. A solid 4 Saved: Ole Man Trouble, My Girl, You Don't Miss Your Water

Wonderful album full of iconic songs, cover songs and some I had never heard before. Definitely an artist ahead of his time. Only complaint is it was short, but short and sweet!

4.5/5 great blues album!

Pretty good -- would be a 3.5. I'll think about whether a 3 or 4. My gut said 4 so I'll go with that.

Who doesn't love Otis? Whoever it is, they're wrong, and I wouldn't mind slapping them about the head. This album is just lovely, you can't argue with that voice, it's everything a soul voice should be. Otis sets the tone for millions of others to follow. A lovely listen.

Love the way the drums were recorded. Tight, big brass. Tasteful guitar. All the big hits - standards now. Is there anyone else past or present that can step to this? Al Green? Sam Cooke? Have you heard the Otis live at Whiskey A-Go-Go album? Oh baby boy. I never put classic soul/R&B on at home. Aren't we all supposed to play Otis while we prep a pot roast dinner for our sweeties? Aren't we all supposed to drink wine and slow dance to Otis in candlelight with bellies full of pot roast? Why the hell is there a white woman on the cover? A

Listen to the deluxe album

I don't listen to a lot of soul music but he has an incredible voice.

Really, really good! So many hits and songs I didnt realise were his. Very enjoyable

Like a 100% Soul compilation

This man could sing The Times Obituary and make it feel uplifting. 11 great songs, averaging about 3 minutes in length each. Would Otis have been able to do this in the modern music Industry?

Mood inducing. Good ones.

Enjoyable. The start of the album is excellent and I think the tail-end (signified by 'Can't Get No Satisfaction') wanes enough to lose a star.

Great soul album

Smooth smooth album. Easiest of easy listening

Beautiful, soulful, timeless. Redding himself has some amazing writing credits on this album - "Ole Man Trouble", "Respect"... The rest of the tracks are rearranged and sung with that grit and conviction.

I like this!

Whole lotta classics. One of must have of the genre

Clásicos

This is one of the hidden gems in the book that I never listened to and shows a great piece of art. Exceptional, for sure. I didn't like so much of these versions of "My Girl" and "Satisfaction", but the album is brilliant.

Bangerz

otis redding otis redding otis redding otis redding otis redding otis redding otis redding otis redding

I don’t think anyone can hate this style of music. This early soul was very influential on what became modern day R&B and I thoroughly enjoy the sound of these pioneers. Otis sings with such emotion and power and the songs on the album really bring it out. I enjoyed it a lot.

Classic. Iconic. Otis shows his soul

Soulful delivery; mostly covers, but man this dude can sing.

Amazing soul, so many great tracks that Otis makes his own.... and apparently the whole album was recorded over 24 hours!? Fave track - "Change Gonna Come", but "My Girl" and "Satisfaction" get honorable mentions.

Don't know much about History <3 Viele Classics wie " I can't get no satisfaction"

One of the greatest voices in the history rock n roll

that was just awesome. what a voice, and what a view into its time.

Pure skill: Otis, the backing band, the Stax production--all of it.

Solid soul/blues album. I didn’t know that Otis Redding wrote Respect.

ma gurl

too many bangers

Nice R&B. Would listen again.

Smooth

Covers of some classics, originals of some classics. Enjoyable and soulful through and through

Liked it
