So many hits! Start to finish this album is solid and has some of my favorite versions of the covers done on it.

Otis was one of the great song interpretators, someone who could turn most any track into a unique vision that only he could pull off. This mau be his best collection of studio performances, and I bet they must have been cracking live. A-

09/28/2022 Yeah. We’ll just never have a talent like this again in our lifetimes. This genre is called soul for a reason, and god Otis Redding did it the very fucking best. — Today sucked FAT. Thankfully, I’m in bed and better now but holy shit. Stubbed tf out of my toe, got fucked over on a group project, and was just overall done with the day. It’s straight up a fight for me to keep showing up to studio, it’s just truly the worst. I hate everyone in my studio so so much.

It is Otis Redding singing what are essentially the pop songs of his day. Whether or not this earns a spot in 1001 is anyone's debate, but getting to hear a Blues legend take other people's music for a spin and make it his own is a treat for listeners, and this reviewer is glad for it.

Iconic voice singing some fantastic songs. Change Gonna Come, My Girl, and I've Been Loving You Too Long are all too important to be left off this list, hence it being here. Standout blues for the ages.

Classic Otis versions of soul songs. Worth listening to, but MUCH better Otis albums exist.

Even though most of these are covers, I felt every single one. They all give off their own sound and really make you feel when Otis sings. Top tier.

08/30/2022 I can't think of a time when I've heard of this artist by name, but I'm pretty sure I have heard at least 2 of these songs. This was a good album, I didn't realize this type of music is considered "soul". I thought it'd to be more like rock. Which by the way, it seems pretty advanced for its time. Listening to "Shake" currently and I wouldn't say it came from 1965. I really liked the songs "A change is gonna come", "Down in Valley", and last but not least "You don't miss your water". And ofc "my girl" is unsaid.

So this was just an enjoyable listen from start to finish. I'm hesistant to give it 5 stars for a couple of reasons. 1) the fact that only three songs are originals 2) the covers don't have a particularly unique spin on them, they just sound good 3) I can't see myself putting this album on to really listen to it, though I do see myself putting it on in the background while making dinner, etc.

If Otis Redding covers your song, there is a real risk that it'll become an "Otis Redding song" for all of history ¹, and you'll need the likes of Aretha Franklin if you want to get it back ². ¹ "Ole Man Trouble", "Respect" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long" are the only Otis Redding compositions on here, the rest are covers. ² "Respect" was infamously covered by Aretha Franklin, and her version is now considered to be the definitive one.

The album is a solid three stars production wise. But since these songs are the basis of Redding's absolutely stellar Monterey Pop show, I'll give it four stars. His performance of I've Been Loving You Too Long in particular is the epitome of soul music. You could say the same for his recording of Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, which isn't on this list unfortunately.

This was an interesting listen - all they all cover tunes? Don't know - don't care. Pretty much the whole thing had me feeling mellow and....cozy? Couldn't place it. Why is Otis Reading making me crave hot chocolate and peppermint? Then it hit me - Otis singing "White Christmas" is the background to a classic Love Actually scene ("I hate Uncle Jamie!"). So other than subconsciously reminding me of Christmas, this is good stuff. Carol singers? Tell 'em to bugger off. No, on second thought...I'll go have a listen.

Redding? cant believe this was recorded within a day, my god! yes this is a "cover" album but I don't think that concept existed back then (almost all albums were cover albums weren't they?) but it has I've been loving you too long which is one of the greatest songs ever (do I hear the "creep" progression in it?) I love this.

This kind of music is right up my alley already, but this album had the added benefit of being the originator (I think) of classic songs like satisfaction and what a wonderful world. So both an enjoyable and interesting album

4 Classic R&B/Soul. I always forget how influential Otis Redding was by originating hits such as ‘Respect’ and covering amazing songs like ‘My Girl’ and ‘Satisfaction’. Less funk and more blues. Certainly more timeless. Other favorites include ‘Ole Man Trouble’, ‘Shake’, and ‘Change is Gonna Come’

4 Having only heard "Sittin in the Dock of the Bay" before this, I gotta say I really dig Otis' voice. He has one of those distinct voices you can identify just a few words into a song, and with the energy he puts into every performance on this record, to say he "sings" soul feels like an understatement. Despite most of the album I believe being covers, he really makes each song his own - to the point I actually think I prefer his rendition of "My Girl". Hearing the original version of "Respect" was also a nice surprise. There's no beating Aretha, but it seems the song came into existence already with a strong foundation in Redding's. Favorite songs: Ole Man Trouble, Respect, My Girl

It's sad to think that more than half of the songs on this album were written by Otis Redding or Sam Cooke, and that within two years of the release of this album, both of them would be dead (Cooke died prior to the recording of the album). Both incredible tragedies for the world of music, both for the loss of their voices and their masterful songwriting. Redding's massive talent is on full display here. What I wouldn't give for a higher quality of recording for this album. It's an issue that plagues a lot of these Stax recordings. Despite this, though, the beauty of these songs are undeniable. Even when he's covering famous songs, he always manages to make them his own 4/5

It's a bunch of covers and the songs I know (e.g. Respect, My Girl, Satisfaction) aren't as good as the originals but everything about this still sounds classic. That Stax houseband was so good

Wow. I mean, really, one of those special albums from which one just feels so much as it's played. I knew a lot more of the tracks than I would've guessed and was glad to discover the ones new to me. Fantastic.

It lives up to the praise - a fine selection of classic Otis Redding and Stax House band soul pop. A great listen. Fills you with sadness that we lost another star so early and not through self destruction this time.

This guy has the pipes. Damn good, but some unnecessary horns mixed throughout.

This is a great album but as is often the problem when there's an album with a bunch of covers, there are better versions out there for most of these. "Respect" is not a cover but there is also a better version elsewhere. Still great for what it is.

Some great Otis classics like I've Been Lovin' You Too Long, Respect (which Aretha Franklin's version became a classic). and Satisfaction (his version of the Rolling Stones classic is unique and soulful). Other Notable songs: You Don't Miss Your Water, Down in the Valley, Change Gonna Come, Rock me Baby, Wonderful World, and My Girl.

It was a good album with a lot of well known songs. It was enjoyable and I would listen to it again.

I find listening to a full album of soul is often difficult even with excellent signers. This album didn’t have that problem since there's a lot of diversity both in tempo and his vocal ranges.  It’s mostly covers but that was the era. It’s interesting that one of the few originals is Respect which is the song that is perhaps best known for the cover Aretha Franklin later did.  I remember the Stones covering “I’ve been loving you too long” on a terribly mixed recording that was their first live album. It’s interesting that the Stones cover of Otis and Otis’ cover of Satisfaction came so soon after the originals were released.  Did they do a pinky swear? Damn his version of Satisfaction is good.

Really great listen with tons of classics. The highlight is definitely Redding’s vocals. Enjoyed listening, would put it on, but not the most mind blowing, impactful record I’ve heard. At least not personally. I think it’s because these songs are just cultural staples, we’ve heard them so many times it’s easy to become jaded. But taking time to sit down and hear the emotion in his voice is something special.

Love a change is gonna come, and the version of Satisfaction. A pretty satisfying soul album, although it doesn't include my fave of his - These Arms of MIne.

This was smooth and soulful and exactly what I needed today. I can see this being on regular rotation.

I am not truly familiar with Otis Redding, Except for the hit songs (SITTIN' ON) THE DOCK OF THE BAY and TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS. I also know Aretha Franklin’s cover of RESPECT, which I was surprised to learn was composed by Otis (but I have not heard his original version). Interesting that Aretha changed the lyrics a bit to reflect a distinct perspective instead of just simply changing the gender. It makes me wonder with Aretha’s version does Otis get 100% of the royalties or zero or is there a split? I also knew the original version of MY GIRL from The Temptations, but not heard Otis' version. I really like Otis and this album. There is a good amount of consistency in the songs that are covered, and his soulful singing style adds spark. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, this is the only album included in the book. I would have thought with Otis he would have another entry. Pretty good. I've long liked classic soul and am of course familiar with Otis Redding, whose voice is top notch on this album. I particularly like his renditions of the two Sam Cooke songs A Change Is Gonna Come and Wonderful World, as well as You Don't Miss Your Water. It's not interesting or spectacular enough for 5 stars in my book, but certainly a good listen.

Otis Redding has an amazing voice that is a treat to listen to. However, many of these songs are covers with mixed results. "Satisfaction" with horns was pretty cool, but the chorus of "My Girl" was jarring to listen to with a solo singer as the harmonies have been replaced by awkward pauses and drawn-out notes. I had no idea that this was the original version of "Respect" but Aretha Franklin's cover is superior. Also, who/why is the random blonde lady on the cover?

Love Otis Redding. I have a live album of him (Good To Me: Live at the Whiskey A Go Go) that's just amazing. If you only know him from Dock of the Bay it's not obvious how great of soul singer he is. I'm not sure the recording quality here really captures him like the live album I have does but glad to see this on the list. Definitely an enjoyable listen.

Good saxophones. Tracks are short. Interesting in that it's basically a covers album. "Shake" has sampling potential I reckon. Didn't enjoy "Respect" much actually. Standouts for me: "Ole Man Trouble", "Shake", "Wonderful World"

This was the first album of this type of music I've ever listened to, and honestly I really liked it. It's music that my grandparents listen to but it's filled with soul. Everything blends together so well, whether it's the instruments or the vocals everything has it's place. I didn't know "satisfaction" from the rolling stones was a cover and I heard "my girl" on a commercial before. I feel like some of the songs dragged a bit but apart from that I enjoyed it very much and would definitely revisit it. 7.2/10

The first song is called 'Ole Man Trouble' and it made me think of Ole's Man Utd trouble. Really needs a result against Villareal tonight. Robert Plant's favourite from this is 'Rock Me Baby'. He nonces babies. Otis Redding is pretty good.

I really liked the vibe of the whole album. "A Change is Gonna Come" sounds a whole lot like "I'm gonna find Another You" from John Mayer and I love it.

By the cover I thought Otis Blue was a female artist. Ended up finding out that no, Otis Blue is a male and, by the way, it's not even Blue, but Redding, which is cute but "Blue" would be nicer. Also, listened the album while writing and it worked well. Wrote a chronicle about eggs and crying. Anyways, it was very good. Particularly find "Wonderful world" kinda stupid but whatever. Some super famous songs like "My Girl" and "Satisfaction" are featured on this, which is, I imagine, the biggest reason why they would recommend this. Although, there are other bangers. Especially that intro track and "Down by the valley" This was the first soul album I've ever listened and I intend to go back to it and also search another records.

Redding's powerful, remarkable singing throughout makes Otis Blue gritty, rich, and achingly alive, and an essential listening experience.

Wonderful album full of iconic songs, cover songs and some I had never heard before. Definitely an artist ahead of his time. Only complaint is it was short, but short and sweet!

Who doesn't love Otis? Whoever it is, they're wrong, and I wouldn't mind slapping them about the head. This album is just lovely, you can't argue with that voice, it's everything a soul voice should be. Otis sets the tone for millions of others to follow. A lovely listen.

I don’t think anyone can hate this style of music. This early soul was very influential on what became modern day R&B and I thoroughly enjoy the sound of these pioneers. Otis sings with such emotion and power and the songs on the album really bring it out. I enjoyed it a lot.

What else is there to say? It's Otis fucking Redding, one of the greatest Soul singers of all time. This album clips along with nothing but passion behind it. No song is wasted on Otis and the band backing him.

Never bothered with soul music before but enjoyed this - always like blues so had a gateway to soul but appreciated this for what it is

There are a couple of classics on here, but it's not my favorite.

On one hand, most of the album is covers that (imo) have been done better elsewhere. So I can’t rate it too highly. But he and the band have so much swag that I can’t rate it too low either.

Great songs and a great singer. It still misses the mark for me a little. I'd rather hear Franklin's Respect and Cooke's Wonderful World, not to mention the Stones' Satisfaction. A wonderful album but a minor one, if that makes sense.

I like Otis Redding and was expecting to enjoy this more than I did As a general rule, I'm not a huge fan of albums full of cover versions, no matter who makes it. Great voice, great sound, but didn't really hit the spot

Never heard the full album before but a lot of it was familiar. Nice listen...a great voice. Only quibble was that at least half of the songs I prefer somebody else's version. A Change Is Gonna Come is an absolutely incredible song, utterly timeless. But Sam Cooke's version is better! Likewise Wonderful World. Remember that old 2010s meme of the girl walking down the street covering her ears and cowering from her brother who is following her playing the trumpet? That's this album. The trumpets are so loud and blown out, they dominate the audio for most of the songs on this album. It's otherwise a great album but those trumpets are so loud. 6/10

Otis was a hell of a singer, but there are a lot of covers and some of them don't add much to the original (i.e., My Girl)

Sounds like pretty much every other Stax record of the time. Otis is a very good singer and some of these songs are really great, but most of the covers don't add a lot to the originals.

Undeniably a legend. I quite enjoy his vocals & the general instrumentation/arrangement on the tracks. I like how the covers are really his own spin on those classic songs, rather than a replica of the original (my girl is pretty spot on replica tho). Cover of satisfaction is very fun soul-ifying the stones mainly with his vocals. He’s so masterful with the use of the growl in his voice but also kinda sultry pulling back. Fav track might be you don’t miss your water. What can I say, I love a ballad. Soul music can sometimes feel a little formulaic with the chord progressions (esp ballads methinks) but it’s a good formula which makes all the songs sound kinda familiar to me and I enjoy things that feel familiar. Wait ole man trouble might be fav track. Love that little guitar riff (reminds me of another song what is it????). Still a soul ballad I just love a soul ballad. Just learned he died in a plane crash at 26, which is quite sad. Wait holy shit just read that this version of respect was BEFORE Aretha’s. Wow! 1965 also the year my grandparents got married which makes this feel more significant somehow. Gonna go three stars because it was enjoyable and great musicians but also there was a bit of monotony and I’m not gonna wake up in the morning and think I NEED TO LISTEN TO OTIS BLUE

I mean this is pretty decent. Nothing mind blowing, good album but doubt I would ever put it on again. The covers at the end were probably the best songs.

Standouts A Change is Gonna Come

I think this is my first soul record I enjoyed this! I loved all the horns and the guys voice had a nice grit to it. There were a couple songs that had arrpeggios throughout which annoys me but I would definitely listen to it again 3.5/5

This was a good album and I enjoyed most of the songs, but I'm always gonna deduct a whole point off the score for an album full of covers. Listening to Otis Redding sing these famous songs didn't make me appreciate his talent, they just made me want to listen to the original versions. I don't want to hear 'Respect', 'Satisfaction', and 'Wonderful World' done by Otis Redding, I want to hear Aretha, the Stones, and Sam Cooke. 3/5

This album was recorded in a day what the fuck Redding's voice is just so iconic and pierces through any medium of separation between the speakers and your ears with ease. You can recognize his timbre from anywhere. Good album in general doe.

I love Otis, so I was so excited for this. It ultimately disappointed me a bit. Most of this is covers, and while they're all enjoyable they often didn't outshine the originals for me. Good, not great.

Almost awesome. Love the voice. Love the band. Love most of the songs. Unfortunately for me it suffers from the fact that I love a different version of most of the songs. There's no competing with Sam Cooke for those ones.. Then with a lot of them, there's not all that much interesting about the re-interpretation for me

It’s a great voice but how highly are you going to rate it when it’s all covers? It’s like saying a, well this college essay is beautifully written but it’s all cited sources, so is it really a meaningful contribution to the field? I would say not really. Nice crystallization of what’s going on in R&B at the time but not much more than that.

I like Otis's voice. Sometimes the lyrics are pretty solid, other times they leave a lot to be desired. It's a mixed bag for sure. Some very enjoyable songs, some duds. "Shake" is the cupid shuffle from a universe with a god that intervenes on human suffering more (derogatory). "My Girl" is "Sweet Caroline" in that same universe (commendatory). It's decent, and the guy definitely has talent, but It's mostly covers all done in the same style. And I think there's slightly better versions of all these songs out there. A Change Is Gonna Come was my favorite.

Rating: 7/10 A great performance of some classic covers and original songs by Redding and his band, it's very simply that and not much more but it does what it sets out to do very well. Hard not to see why he was so influential for both soul and blues styles. I couldn't really see myself putting this album on but would rather just reach for Redding's greatest hits if I ever happen to want that vibe. I stand by the fact that they should just put greatest hits albums of legendary musicians on this list instead of studio albums and it would be fine.

I don’t see myself revisiting often, but nothing I object to either. - had no idea Respect was not written by Aretha, very different feel in the original here - love the horns on this album - lots of dynamics - did not realize how many of these songs I knew - cover of Stones’ satisfaction, a song I don’t really like, and I don’t care for this version much either

Disappointing. Very standard for a 60s singer I was pretty high on before this.

I like this album and think the renditions are very good. Am I insane in thinking that Otis needs to chill it down a touch though. Like listening to 'Wonderful World' he is screaming a lot and compare that to Sam Cooke's version which is mellower and I prefer that version. But still, great band and great force of nature.

I was really into Otis Redding while a bit younger...not as much now...but that voice and talent and effort is much much appreciated and still admired.

Alors j'ai pas accroché plus que ça. Je ne connais rien à la soul donc je suis absolument incapable de dire ce que ça vaut, mais d'un autre côté, il faut admettre qu'Otis Redding a une sacrée voix et qu'il est vraiment très intense. Et je dois bien dire que je suis tout de même très satisfait de mon écoute car : - ça contient sa chanson la plus connue et je savais même pas que c'était de lui, - on a droit à une des chansons sauvagement plagiées par Led Zeppelin (et c'est pas subtil du tout), - on a une reprise de Satisfaction en version soul, personne ne la réclamait, mais tout le monde en avait en réalité besoin. Ce genre de choses, c'est exactement pour ça que je me suis lancé dans l'écoute de cette liste. Parfois, Robert Dimery fait quand même pas mal le café. Et comme c'est un petit album qui ne prend pas longtemps à écouter, aucune lassitude n'a le temps de s'installer alors que moi, c'est pas du tout mon style. Non, vraiment, c'était une découverte intéressante !

Otis energetic performance even in studio recordings is amazing it always hits me how much soul is in that soul music truely "The King of Soul" also I listened to both the Mono and the Stereo versions of the album and I really prefer the stereo one

Soul and blues isn't really my cup of tea. However I enjoyed listening to the album while writing my thesis. It was calming, vibey and helped me focus on my work. Four songs made it into my playlist: Shake, My Girl, Rock Me Baby and (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. Although most songs sound a bit the same, those songs stood out to me more than the others. Overall a good album, just not music I would listen to or enjoy often.

A strong effort from one of the smoothest singers ever. It was a great listening experience. Not a lot more to be said. Biggest negative for me was that it was overwhelmingly covers. Is it really fair to say an album is "great" when it's an immensely talented vocalist singing songs that are already popular? It feels like cheating a little bit, even though they changed up the arrangements somewhat. His few originals are great, and everything I know Otis has written is a good song. Unfortunately we only got three of those on this whole album. The covers are what dropped this back down to just "good" for me. Just not enough original work to get more credit than that. But it was still very good.

Good blues / jazz. Aretha definitely did a better job on "Respect" (with which Otis himself agreed) and I didn't care for his cover of "Satisfaction," but still, he's got a terrific blusey voice.

Soul is actually pretty nice.

Otis Redding has an extremely powerful voice; he blends into each cover so smoothly. I originally thought these were all original songs until I took a closer look. I’m not sure if I’ve ever listened to a soul and blues album, but this is definitely a classic in its respective genre. I began listening to this in the shower. Every enjoyable, easy listening!

Really like it, but a couple of the covers don’t work, Stones in particular

Sublime. His voice was astonishing, it's hard to believe he was in his 20s sounding like this, so much weary heartache. This was fun to just jam out to at the end of my work day while cooking, I'll definitely come back to some of these tracks next time I want to fill out a soul playlist Standouts: Respect (HOW did I not know he wrote the song! i assumed this was his response to Aretha) and A Change is Gonna Come.

I like it! His voice is great and Otis was a cool cat 🐈 but with it being mainly just an album of standard covers at the time it not all that interesting. For what it is though he does a great job!

Some great songs, prefer Smokey Robinson's 'My Girl', Rolling Stones' 'Satisfaction' and Arethas 'Respect' though props for writing that one. Hes got a great voice but prefer when he sticks to the slower numbers. If Sittin On The Dock of The Bay was on here coulda taken it to 4

Just a damn solid record from Otis. Unfortunately not the one with Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, but it does have a great rendition of My Girl. Not sure on it being included due to mostly being a covers album, but good nonetheless.

Otis Redding has an amazing voice. So far the standout track has been “I’ve been loving you too long.” I also like the horns throughout, especially on the “My Girl” cover.

Led almost entirely by Redding's gruff, inimitable voice, this album is a benchmark in soul by all metrics. Personally I was fairly surprised to see so many all time classics find their earliest success here (namely Respect, My Girl.) Much of the album is covers or other assigned material in general. While I find it to be a quite robust and fully convinced album, it does get very samey about halfway through and Redding doesn't really show much of his voice except go full blast almost every time. An album that serves best as a nice background accompaniment as it rarely ever demands a listener's full attention.

Soulful and full of emotions, I'm just not personally a fan of his tone and much prefer the original versions of covered song but nevertheless solid record.

A nice soul album composed by a mix of very cheerful tunes and some heartfelt ballads. The man certainly does sings with a lot of passion and there are some very lively performances, both coming from the singer and the instruments. My criticism about this album comes from me not being very excited about soul in general. I think it is a nice style, but I am not incredibly excited about it, except for some particular acts, such as Nina Simone. So while I enjoyed this album for its passion and fun, I'm also not particularly moved about it.

Hearing the cover of Satisfaction was fun! I had to look it up because I briefly wondered whether in fact this version came first
