Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Interesting that they put a white woman on the cover of this album. Very listenable early soul from one of the masters, who died way too soon. Just not an album I need to hear more than once.
offensive reviews . seminal R&B / Soul album
A lovely listen, bit upbeat with funk and soul sounds
Love his voice and his songs, even though some of these songs were covers.
A great cover album, but nontheless it is still a cover album and I can't give it more than 3 stars Best Song: A Change is Gonna Come Rating: 6/10 Stars: 3/5
really cool stuff!
This is the kind of stuff I listen to for pleasure. The only reason I don't rate it higher is that it's not very original.
Y pues algo me faltó.
A great singer and some great tracks here.
I wasn’t expecting covers, but I liked many of his interpretations, especially of “Satisfaction.”
Timeless soul classics!
15/1089 Ole Man Trouble was a great opener, Otis’ voice is beautiful. It has a very easy listening vibe to it. It’s interesting hearing the original version of Respect (having not previously known about it) naturally his voice sounds amazing on it Wow A Change Is Gonna Come got me teary, i’m not sure if i’ve heard this rendition before but it’s stunning. I’ve Been Loving You Too Long was very passionate and a nice listen his version of Satisfaction was a lot of fun and very energetic You Don’t Miss Your Water was a perfect ending, a really beautiful relaxed way to top of the album overall i really enjoyed listening to this. however, i find it hard to judge it knowing that the majority of these are covers and not original to Redding. That said, they were mostly really nice interpretations. I fully appreciate artists including covers and renditions of songs that are important to them/their record and these were very well incorporated, I just generally prefer original songs when i’m listening to the album of an artist who is new to me faves: A Change Is Gonna Come, You Don’t Miss Your Water least faves: Rock Me Baby, Wonderful World 3 stars or 61/100 i really liked this album and will likely revisit my favourites but it isn’t necessarily my taste as a whole
Great voice great vibes just too much filler
Great vocals and good vibes! I knew a lot of the songs he was covering so that was nice. Happy
Iconic voice, mostly covers with some originals, backed by an all-star Stax band — Booker T. & the M.G.’s and Isaac Hayes on piano. It sounds great, but some of these songs are done better by other artists on other albums. I like it, and you can’t deny the talent and the playing — it’s just not a record I would reach for often.
Oh my soul! In my teenage years (60's), my peers would either follow rock/r&b or soul, and be dressed and groomed as such. I resisted soul therefore as if it were political. Once more mature, I was able to appreciate this genre for its own unique sound and importance. Otis Redding's story is remarkable. What a talent, and productivity as a young artist, cut short at the height of his success, like so many others. Soul never became my favorite genre, but this album is very listenable.
Otis Redding: Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul: Its a fairly good soul album. Not my favorite genre of music, but its solid, fun, and short. Like the instrument diversity. 7/10
a lot of great songs, Idk what was original or a cover, but a nice voice to listen to over some deeply emotional songs
Otis is wonderful - love the sound, some great highlights here (Ole Man Trouble, A Change is Gonna Come). Some of the tracks have versions which are more iconic (Respect, My Girl, Wonder World, Satisfaction). I do like Otis' version of these but it keeps the record feeling a bit less essential. This is a strong 3 for me.
Great sound but too many covers!
Good, but not the best of Redding. Also, “Respect” is out-shone in every way by the AF version.
What's that? Cover albums shouldn't be on this list? Especially if they just make you wish you were listening to the originals? Sorry Otis 😭
soul, 1965 -> 3
Standout Songs: Respect Down in the Valley My Girl Wonderful World
Good basslines and rhythms. I don't normally listen to stuff like this, but there was enough going on musically for me to appreciate.
Great listen with lots of great hits. Gets a bit samey at times but hard to have too much of a good thing.
Great classics. All listenable. I would put the whole album on.
Otis is uber talented, but it's hard for me to rate an album full of covers too high, especially when I like the originals better
classic
Really solid listen and an essential artist - however, the composition of the album being covers (or songs made more famous by other artists' covers) makes it less likely I'll revisit.
Didn't listen to the whole thing. Obviously amazing talentt
Not bad.
This short album includes mostly covers done by soul singer Otis Redding, i never liked Otis that much, although there are a couple of songs that are good. The Memphis-based backup band was top notch at that time. Aretha Franklin covered “Respect” later and made it a hit. Overall enjoyable listening.
Who knew Otis Redding looked like that? This album is mostly covers, which is good for me because it means I actually know the songs. Well, covers and songs that will later be covered, like 'Respect'. (By the by, there seems to be a lot of misinformation about where "cover" in the music sense came from; it came from "coverage", as in market coverage!) Double by the by, what's the deal with naming albums by colors? There's the Beatles' White album, which I always assumed inspired things like Weezer's Green album, Metallica's Black album, etc. But this album is older than the White Album! Of course I don't know if anyone called it Otis's Blue album, but surely it could have played some role in this tradition? It's a hard thing to research because colored vinyl records were also a thing, which may or not have had some influence (c.f. Bobby Vinton's 1963 "Blue on Blue", which was on blue vinyl). Highlights: 'My Girl', 'Wonderful World' (I also don't know what a good slide rule is for), 'Satisfaction' (only because it reminds me of Britney Spears, ha)
Mit „I've Been Loving You Too Long“ enthält das Album eine der zentralen Balladen in Reddings Repertoire.
An underwhelming album. I think this is an example where the total is less than the sum of its parts. I enjoy Otis, and I enjoy Soul, but I don't think his covers add to the listening experience. 3/2.5 stars
Good stuff, a little monotonous when listening to the whole album straight
I mean it's nice. But nothing really special imo
Really enjoyed this one
A lot of the songs sounded the same, but it’s good!
2.5-3
it's pleasantly nice
I know Otis but I have never listened to this cover album of songs we all appreciate. I was aware he wrote "Respect" which Aretha turned into an all time great hit, his version is very different. His take on "A Change Is Gonna Come" is solid, it's such a good song regardless of who's singing it. I enjoyed his interpretations of "My Girl" and "Wonderful World". But I wasn't satisfied with his version of "Satisfied" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long" It feels like he oversings some of the songs, trying to find that wow moment, instead of using that great voice to present his version. I wasn't all that impressed nor did I think he did enough to make some of those classics his own. 3 stars and that's generous.
Classic and fun to listen to. Only a few of them I remember from before.
A strong effort from one of the smoothest singers ever. It was a great listening experience. Not a lot more to be said. Biggest negative for me was that it was overwhelmingly covers. Is it really fair to say an album is "great" when it's an immensely talented vocalist singing songs that are already popular? It feels like cheating a little bit, even though they changed up the arrangements somewhat. His few originals are great, and everything I know Otis has written is a good song. Unfortunately we only got three of those on this whole album. The covers are what dropped this back down to just "good" for me. Just not enough original work to get more credit than that. But it was still very good. Overall: 3.5/5
Some covers were better than others. Oddly I like my girl the most
Sounds like all over old music. Nice listen but quite unremarkable
Solid blues music. I am not a Blues person but it was solid
enjoyable listen with lots of familiar songs (most are covers?). I'm not usually a blues fan but enjoyed this. 3.5 stars
Blues isn’t really my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the quality of the songs here
7/10. It's...pleasant.
Pretty good
Mostly a covers album but well above average for this genre. Great backing band and soulful vocals.
not my style, but is good
Sweet vocals, great band.
So many solid songs I recognized but don’t know if he’s the chicken or the egg. Ran a bit long though
Pretty classic
Good stuff
3.5 Stars.
This album just sounded like one big continuous song. I don’t dislike it but I don’t know if I’d purposely put it on. It kind of started growing on me the more I listened to it. I can see why people like it though, just not a big fan of soul music. It just seems kind of slow and forgettable to me. My favourite tracks were My Girl and Wonderful World.
90/1089 - I like Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin's versions better. Overall it was okay.
It was fine. Vocally nice but musically a bit boring.
i would once again like to register my frustration at albums that are largely covers, despite knowing that standards are a big part of early rock and soul. anyway, good bathtub listening
his voice is just so great
Some good songs on this album. Definitely enjoyed but not sure if I’ll relisten.
Didn’t like it that much to begin with icl, probs cos I was doing a paper again, but I do like the instruments, a bit jazzy kinda upbeat, different, very, to what I’d listen to but it’s not bad actually, some of it gets a bit tiring/repetitive but not too bad I wouldn’t say. He does love speeding it up too, might just be because it was the live versions but he would get really fast and it was idk maybe a little annoying? Also the song respect sounded really demanding and misogynistic lmaoo
Foundational for a lot of music. Not really my thing though.
Listenable but rather boring.
Most of this album is covers, and while they’re nice listens, none of these versions are the most famous versions of any of these songs. And I can understand why. Nice, but ultimately forgettable.
Couple of good covers, but ain’t my fav.
Good as Don’t listen to soul but na it was proper good to chill out with
The vocals are fantastic. And the musicianship is first rate. I didn't like all of the covers, but overall this is good stuff.
Solid soul album. Not much to say.
Not for me, but not bad
The cover of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction is better than the Rolling Stones version (and so is Devo's cover)
you can tell it was super influential but I don't feel like it holds up for me having heard what came later. aretha's respect is just better.
Nothing other than the popular classics stuck out to me on first listen.
good listen
Some classics here, and the tracks I hadn't heard before were fine. It wasn't my cup of tea musically, but I enjoyed it enough for a strong 3 star rating.
idk its ok, songs are mostly fun and instrumentals are pretty good as well, singing suits the songs well. Quite a lot of the songs sound the same. Favourite songs: kind of all of them, but especially A change is gonna come, wonderful world, you don't miss your water. I think I like the more ballad ones. Overall around 5/10
Enjoyable change of pace from the last few albums, but mostly covers that don't enhance or deviate from the originals
they should do half stars this is a 3.5
Sweet
Groovy album. Soulful rendition of Change Gone Come, Wonderful world, and My Girl. Lots of Sam Cooke tracks there. Other solid tracks like Shake. It's a good overall listen, but I'm always hesitant of getting behind cover albums like this. I nearly always prefer original material.
I wanted to like this more than I did and it did have some great hits on it such as My Girl and I’ve Been Loving You Too Long, his voice was amazing ofc too, but the music just didn’t captivate me so much. It was good though and I can see the albums merit, I think I may just need to devote it more time and energy.
Overall: 5/10 I'm going through some stuff so I'll keep this short. Otis had an incredible voice but that's really the only element of this album that drew me in at all. I don't typically enjoy this era of music where every artist seemed to be covering the same handful of songs. A lot of talent here but nothing I feel the need to revisit. Fav Song: Down in the Valley Least Fav Song: Loving You Too Long
It was a nice listen, but not something I'll likely return to.
I like the feel of this album and Otis’s voice. I didn’t realize he wrote R.E.S.P.E.C.T. The overall vibe is slow and I’d like some more energy.
Yeah, it's good. I just can't get into soul music though.
Pleasant album to listen to while running some errands. Bloke has a great voice, lots of soul. Some bangers in there too. Soul
Does an album with so many covers belong on this list? I'm not sure. But either way, it's silky smooth and soulful goodness.
It was good with great vocals. Lots of covers though so I couldn’t rate it higher than I wanted.
What a voice Otis Redding has. It's surely worth an extra star for being so soulful. The actual songs are a little hit and miss. I like the cover of 'Respect' which is pretty good (I never really liked that song to begin with to be fair). I really really enjoyed the cover of 'My Girl' which I actually think is better than the original, or at least I enjoyed it more. Once again, Redding's voice pushes it to that next level and the horn section is great. Redding's version of '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' was very interesting. The slightly quicker speed, his vocals and the horns add a different flavour to the song. I think the Stones version is good as the drums drive it forward, but this is a very very good version and very close to pick between them. I have a huge soft spot for 'I've Been Loving You Too Long'. When I was younger, my parents had a performance of it on VHS and we replayed this track over and over so it's ingrained into my brain. It's a beautiful song, sung perfectly by Redding. The building of the horns into the almost desperate cries from Otis are perfect. The rest of the album is okay, I can't say I've heard of any of the other songs but they're decent. Just upbeat soul. A rating of 3 stars seems fair to me.
I rate I've been loving you a 3 star because its really not for me and the beat is kinda bad ⭐⭐⭐. I rate Respect a 5 star because the beat is for me and the country is really good ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. I rate Sadisfaction a 2 star because star because its really not for me and the beat is kinda bad ⭐⭐.
I don't like this song because it is too sad and gives me sad vibes. I like this song because it is happier and gives me happy vibes.
the first song is buns I don't like it but the beat is lowkey good or wtv but I don't like and the music is good the second song is buns to like I said in the first song the beat is good I don't like the voice or nun but da beat is good the third song is buns from da start
Is the woman on the cover the singer? "I've been loving you too long" is okay, the singing voice isn't the greatest. The music is decent but kind of boring. I liked "Respect" because it was good. The music was upbeat and fun. "Satisfaction" was okay. The music was fun and the singing sounded pretty good. I might recommend this album.
the first song is okay I don't really like it though not really much to say about it I wouldn't really recommend it. the second song is the same and so is the third
This is one of those albums I’ve never heard but it sounded exactly like I expected.
I dutifully listened to the whole album but I don't feel like I heard anything
6/10 - It was decent. Sounded old timey and had 2 songs that might be covers or are covered of more popular songs.
A really nice voice with some good covers of classics
Decent but not a standout. I recognized some familiar tunes. Favourite track: My Girl
Lovely, soulful Had only listened to one song off the album before but really enjoyed on my way to work
With this kind of album, the rating very much depends on whether you like the style of music or not, as most of the tracks are very similar. For me, I don’t mind it, but it does start to get annoying after a little while of the same vocal techniques song after song. It would be good as background music at a dinner party.
Pleasant background music.
my giiiirllllll....trumpet!
Out of the soul singers I have checked out so far in my dive into the genre I would say there have been a fair amount more I prefer to Otis Redding. Don't get me wrong, I think he has a projective and powerful voice but the thing I like more about this project would be the production, big instrumentation and maybe even the songwriting, all in contrast to the vocals. Still nothing bad, just not my favourite.
Wasn’t expecting an album of mostly covers that didn’t sound all that different from the originals but still fine.
Not into soul, but it was ok. 6/10
Banger. Just good, awesome music. The solo on "Rock me baby" goes so hard.
Covers. Dull
not my type
„My Girl“. „Wonderful World“ und „Satisfaction“ sind reizvolle Coverversionen bekannter Titel.
Fine. Obviously a lot of classics. Not sure it should be included with all the cover versions though
I liked this album. The horn line was sooooo good and I enjoy Otis Redding's voice. This album is a majority covers, which is always fun to see someone's spin on songs, but I wish there was more original content here. Actual rating is a 3.5. Liked Songs: "Ole Man Trouble" , "A Change Is Gonna Come" , "Down in the Valley" , "Shake" , "Wonderful World" , "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"
liked songs: Respect, A Change Is Gonna Come, I've Been Loving You Too Long, My Girl Pretty good! 3.5
not really my cup of tea, but he had a really amazing voice!, I loved his passion and power. It's good to hear someone I completely ignored in the past and figured out how he influenced so much great music created later.
Don't know much about RnB, But I do know Otis Redding had a wonderful voice, What a wonderful album this could be
I enjoyed it but an album of covers really?
3.5
ok
I think if anything it just proves the genius of Aretha Franklin. How you can change a song about implied spousal abuse to a women empowerment anthem by barely changing a word. The rest of the album is good. satisfaction is better here than the rolling stone version. Honestly better than I was expecting. He's got such a unique voice.
Good album, a few classics/early versions of songs.
i'd rather just listen to the original songs
I love Otis Redding but I don't think you can pick an album of his that's solid. Would have loved to see him live longer and see where his music went, there was so much potential but we live in the world we live in.
Some classics and impossible to hate but most I wont return to Rating: 3.1
Overall, solid, but not really my type of music. I think part of the fact is that I'm used to albums containing all, or almost all, original songs, while this is still the era in which covers rule. Don't get me wrong, Otis puts a great spin on "My Girl" and "Satisfaction", but I'm sad there aren't more originals. That said, I was actually shocked to learn that this is the original version of "Respect"! Yes, Aretha did it better, but it's still a great song. Fav tracks: Ole Man Trouble, Respect, My Girl
Whole extra star for “My Girl”
Nice soul music
J’adore Down in the Valley J’aime bien You don’t miss your water
I enjoyed this but I really enjoy live recordings of Otis more.
Pretty good gets a lil boring
Nice album. Interesting arrangements of his and other people's songs. What a voice.
solid
Enjoyed it. Easy to listen to, some classic songs.
Decent album, Otis has a fantastic voice. Didn't really resonate, soul is a bit slow and winding for me, but the horns are great.
That was pretty good, but I don't see why I would listen to it often. Still, it totally deserves its place here!
Short and sweet but very enjoyable, that’s the way to do covers!
Listening to this album isn’t an unpleasant experience and there’s no denying Otis’ vocal talent. The record is littered with great musical talent - Booker T and the MG’s were the backing band. Is it a classic, well it’s certainly good but the majority of tracks are covers, which helps rather than distracts from it being a classic. There’s no doubt this was in part of the albums crossover appeal and commercial success. In that sense it’s a classic album bringing soul to a wider audience. Not entirely my taste but I can see it’s importance in the history of popular music 🎶
There's a lot of classic stuff on here but I've also heard it like 2,000 times so it doesn't really hit anymore
Good album but it is all covers.
hour 356 of listening to 60s blues mash songs which were surely all nice by then but now are kinda meh (unfortunately also thanks to the garbage recordings back then)
No esta mal, not mi rollo
Iconic in its own terms, but it does have lots of filler songs.
I know I'm wrong, but I don't really like Otis Redding. I think his music was used too much in 80s-90s movies or something - it's hard to evaluate it from a neutral perspective.
Otis Redding songs songs other than Sittin in the dock of the bay!?!?! This can’t be right. I’ll call the list maker. It’s ringing. Hey, man. First of all, fuck you. Yeah, Uh huh. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were big for you in college? Right right. What was the deal with that late era Bob Dylan album? Yeah? Well, it wasn’t good. Anyway, I’m seeing here that Otis Redding will not be singing his seminal hit “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay.” Hmm, I’m an idiot??? Well, we’ll see who’s the idiot when I write my OWN book called the 1002 albums that are better than The Killers’ Hot Fuss. Otherwise titled, every album ever written. Good day to you sir. Alright, I’ll call tomorrow. Take care. What were we talking about? Oh yeah. This first song was ok. Was hoping for a bit more punch, but it was fine. Did Otis write this song??? No R-E-S-P-E-C-T?? How else am I supposed to know how to spell any of this shit? Come on Otis. Good song. Here is the soul. Hell yeah. A change has indeed come. Arrived in a big fashion. YUP. The piano and drums are ripping. This one is good, and yes, I HAVE been sad. Otis would’ve LOVED relatable memes. POV when you see uhh POV that face when uhhhh me when I listen to music #ad Listen. This song doesn’t have much except his voice. His voice is good but it doesn’t stir me like some others have. Pass. You shake it like a bowl of soup. - Otis Redding, 1965. This song is kind of fun, but a little to roller rink and by no means earth shattering - Me, 2024. Otis wins as far as quotes go, but as far as being a talentless boob reviewing music? I have that puppy firmly in the bag. Very popular song. Wanted to hate it. The melodies are wonderful, the concept is nice. The horns blew out my eardrums. Luddite’s revenge in destroying my oppressive headphones. Still good. And my damaged eardrums will certainly the next 12 Bowie albums go down easier. He doesn’t know much about biology, or French. Same brother, same. Although why is this a weird ode to a student. Has the vibe of a 20 year old talking to a 14 year old outside the lunch hall. Do kids have lunch halls? Or is it just the TikTok gymnasium brought to you by Vape Pods. This is an excerpt from my new webstrip “Dunch: The man who hates everything that’s different and new-fangled, yet only has a vague understanding of any of it.” Anticipating huge Facebook shares despite large competition in that genre. More good soul. Excellent track with over the top lyrics, but hey, they work here. Repeats a little heavily towards the end, but overall decent. Did he write every song? A classic made famous by the Rolling Stones obviously. I mean Otis isn’t struggling for notoriety out here but still. Don’t tell me what I miss. Come on man. After all we’ve been through. You tell me I don’t miss my water. I miss that sweet water every day. I’m incredibly dehydrated. This isn’t a metaphor. This is a good reminder for me. Hmmmmmmmmm. Well. This album is good. Does it move me in any particular direction? Not really. Did I hurt my potential enjoyment by listening to Etta James before this? Possibly. We had fun today. And we learned a lot. Mostly that Otis Redding is pretty good. Not great, but good. Sorry. 3 HIGHLIGHTS: A Change is Gonna Come, Down in the Valley, My Girl, (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
I don’t have much to say about this album. Otis Redding has a great voice, but this album of covers didn’t do much for me. Nothing wrong with it, I wouldn’t be upset to hear it again, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it either.
Cracking voice, some cracking songs, but as usual I’ll be capping my score because it’s mostly covers of already famous tunes (several of which can probably be found elsewhere on the 1001 list anyway). For balance though I will give some acknowledgement to Otis’s songwriting chops. In addition to co-writing the peerless (Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay, the three tracks he wrote for this album are all decent (did I know he wrote Respect? Probably, once, but I’d definitely forgotten).
A pleasant enough run through of some classic songs - not sure it's essential though
Clear delineation between the two halves. First half great voice and songs show some signs of life but it's all a little slow for me. 2nd half mich more me but no definitive versions of any song
Otis Blue is a solid soul album, but it is definitely a product of its time. Half the album is just covers of other popular songs. What's wild, is that those covers are basically the best part of the album (although he apparently did write Respect, which was a surprise). Best Songs: My Girl, Satisfaction Worst Songs: Down in the Valley, Rock Me Baby
I really enjoyed this album. Not very long but filled with beautiful soul. Otis nails it perfectly. I really liked it, and recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a perfect soul and blues album. 3/5
Correcto
It was good, good but not the quintessential versions of some of the songs. I enjoyed it though!
Cool album. Nice and chill.
A lot of pleasant songs
Solid album. It's not what I usually listen to so I appreciate having my mind expanded. The number of covers make me feel like it might be lacking in originality or progressiveness but it was very listenable.
I wanted to like this album more than I did. It was good, don't get me wrong, but it more often than not made me want to listen to other versions of many of the covers that Otis sang. Good but didn't stick out in my mind as great. At least it was bite sized compared to the last 2 albums.
3/5
Liked the album well enough but not the best soul/blues we've had. Aretha Franklin remains supreme and that's extra relevant here given she coved Otis' song and made it better. EVEN FUNNIER is Otis singing I can't get no satisfaction: Redding claimed that he did not know the lyrics of the song. "I use a lot of words different than the Stones' version," he noted. "That's because I made them up." Of that session, Steve Cropper said, "...if you ever listened to the record you can hardly understand the lyrics, right? I set down to a record player and copied down what I thought the lyrics were and I handed Otis a piece of paper and before we got through with the cut, he threw the paper on the floor and that was it." Fucking boss. Overall not bad. 3/5.
Pretty nice, but the fact that only 2 songs are original takes away from it a bit.
good
Otis my king, this ight
i guess you say what can make me feel this way my girl
It's a good album. Lots of soul brother.
Where's the harmonica? Just joking, guys :D Gentle waves breaking on a distant shore. A luxurious quilt to wrap oneself in and feel its warmth and depth - not too hot, not too cold. I rather enjoyed this.
Just makes you feel good! He has a great voice, really soulful. I think Paulo Nutini must have been a fan, this reminded me of him. Strong 3 but didn’t quite grab me enough to warrant a 4, it’s just nice relaxing music.
Ole Man Trouble - 5/10 at first I was transported to King of the Hill. It's okay but I wouldn't listen to it again. Respect - 6/10 this one teleports me to family feud LOL A Change is Gonna Come - 6.5/10 Oh this one I like. so many emotions when he started singing. love the piano's in the back as well. Down in the Valley - 6/10 this one is a little groovy! And funky! but the lil guitar moment was good. I've Been Loving You Too Long - 6/10 oh the piano is lovely here. okayyyy vocals!! Maybe i just like these slower paced songs more. This kinda giving Recess by Melanie Martinez. It's that old timey piano in the back. Shake - 6.5/10 okay this one makes me wanna dance and do the lil side move while swinging my arms. rn im stuck on 6.5 or 7 My Girl - 8/10 A CLASSIC BABY SHES THE BEST ONE FOR A REASON missing the harms and adlibs though Wonderful World - 7/10 this one is so cute Rock Me Baby - 5/10 she was okay just very repetitive (I can't get no) Satisfaction - 6/10 this is giving surfer and summer. i like. You don't Miss your Water - 6/10 oh the guitar and piano are married in the beginning. Overall: 6.18/10
Average.
Celkem bavilo. 6/10
Yes, this is mostly a covers album, but Otis Redding does such a fantastic job of doing his own spin and making these songs his own. Every song is beautifully and masterfully sung in a way that only he could do. And most of these are well-known songs too; he wasn't covering obscure songs, he was covering songs that were already iconic. And yet, he manages to still stand out with his renditions. It's kind of funny that this album of mostly covers would have the Otis original, "Respect" on it, which he would definitely not go on to be known for, and would instead be completely eclipsed as this became a huge hit being covered by Aretha Franklin.
A mighty tool (Redding’s voice) used for less worthy material (frivolous lyrics), not too different than the case of Nina Simone and Wild Is The Wind (which I got not too long ago), though in both cases the material is nonetheless elevated by the artists.
I'm not really sure how much to say about this one. It's Otis Redding so it's great. But as great as it is, I just don't connect with this music much. Or maybe it's not that I don't connect with it, it might be that it just sounds so dated to me. Not just this album but the whole soul and early R&B genres in general. I think this kind of music, though great for the time, just doesn't play as well anymore. I don't know. It's a great album but would I ever seek it out again? Probably not. 3/5
I can pretty easily understand why this album is on the list. Every now and then, I listen to an old soul album and realize just how often these songs get covered. I would never have known about the person who originally wrote them. This seems to be the case here. Every other song on this album was one I was very familiar with, but didn't know that Otis sang it. It's good songwriting, but maybe I'm used to all the covers to really listen to these, or maybe I would only listen to this if I wanted something that sounded lower-fidelity.
It's fine. I'm not a huge fan of soul music, but Otis Redding has a really good voice and every song was listenable. That's about all I can say.
Otis Redding (gone far too soon) has a beautiful soulful voice, but some of these songs just aren’t distinct enough from the originals to make an impact. “My Girl,” for example, is missing something without those harmonies.
It’s a rather lovely selection of soul covers, with a few Redding originals too. It doesn’t do anything else, though. A nice soul album, a product of its time, takes you back to the era, et cetera, et cetera. With its longest song at just over 4 minutes, and most of the others below 2 minutes, it really does epitomise the word ‘album’ itself, a collection of soul numbers from the era of singles.
I was looking forward to this one. I feel like soul and r’n’b is “proper” music that I don’t know enough about. But I was left a bit confused as to what was original songs (the original “Respect” is on here) and what is covers (everything else?) and not the “classic” version. And a few songs didn’t grab me at all. Having said all that, it has the song that is sampled on “I squeeze gats” (shake) so that’s pretty good. I dunno 3.5stars?
Classic voice though this album felt like a bunch of tracks had been slapped together
A very good album of mostly covers. A pleasant listen with a few great tracks. 3.5.
Soul R&B. Very Good.
Not being a style I listen to often at all, I find this refreshing. Deep emotions and catchy melodies. 3 stars
I was excited seeing an Otis Redding album but was surprised that it seemed to be all covers. His voice is one of the best and the instrumentals are solid throughout. Worth being on the list and hearing for sure but honestly thought I'd like it more than I did.
When I saw Otis Redding pop up I was expecting more. A bunch of covers and not really my favorite versions of these songs. Still some good energy but doesn't vary enough.
I really like Redding's singing here. The songs are a bit bland. The original tracks are the best. Another album I discovered this year. All thanks to this list. 3 stars for "Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul".
This leaves me a bit cold and I am trying to put my finger on why. It all sounds a bit samey? By the numbers and lacking in passion somehow. Anyhow, this is not quite what I thought it would be
Agradable
Otis Redding is great. I only have a limited knowledge of his music. His voice sounds good on this album but I'll need to listen to some other non-cover songs of his to get more of an idea as to what he does. Some of the songs on this album. I have too strong and association with other artists on. My favorites were Down In the Valley and Shake.
-I’ve gotten a lot more interested in soul music lately. This is really solid, although the production and sound is understandably a bit dated. the Satisfaction cover is legitimately amazing and so catchy -Favorites are Down In The Valley, Shake, and I Can’t Get No (Satisfaction)
It's fine. Good, not great. Not really much to note but an above average soul/blues album. Exactly as the top commenter notes, it's too one dimensional to score any higher. 6/10 (3/5)
Good listening to some classics, but pretty tame. It is quite foundational, though.
I was really looking forward to this album... I like Otis Redding and this is supposedly his best album (I must admit I had never listen to a full Redding album before). I still like Otis Redding but this album is only a 3 for me. The reasons are that I find it hart to give a very high score for a (mostly) cover album. Redding only wrote three of the songs. And for the music, he could count on the Stax session musicians (which are amazing), it's not "his" band. Also, the songs sound great, but a bit same-ish.
A fun listen, couple of noteworthy songs, but got boring.
Even though this album is only 30 minutes long, making it all the way through it seemed hard. It gave the feeling of being one 30 minute long song... Then about halfway through, it became significantly better. Plus, I can't complain about Redding's singing.
This sounds great, and Otis has an amazing voice. I can't give high marks to an album that is mostly covers though.
New to me. Rock creeping in, nicely. I'm loving the way the covers are both familiar and ground-changing. The horns alone are enough to love this album.
Bit of a dodgy cover! His voice is beautiful but I can only take a handful of songs at a time. They have more impact in isolation.
This one didn’t impress me as much as I’d hoped but the strength of a couple of tracks (Change Is Gonna Come esp) really bouy the weaker entries (Satisfaction cover)
It was fine.
Yum yum smooth
Great voice.
Enjoyable listen
This was fine. Redding's voice is amazing, of course, but I got bored. It's becoming increasingly clear that the author of this list thinks the only good music came out of the 60's... 3/5
Cool blues seeped pop song collection from Otis, is voice remains so unique and crisp 59 years later. Unmatched ranged and pop prowess from a souldgul dude. Production and instrumentation keep the value of this album high off the bat. Doesn't sound dated or old in the slightest.
Gut!
Surprising that he was so young but has such a soulful voice. 3.5/5.
It’s a solid album, just feels too drawn out at times
Horny!
Otis Redding is one of the greats, but this album sounded so dated.
Not bad, not good. Not my style
Mostly very well performed cover-versions of well-know titles. Nice voice. A bit too aged for my taste. 2,5
Would I listen to it again: yes Is it a no-skip album: no Favorite song: Ole Man Trouble Least favorite song: Rock Me Baby Do I like it: yes
A lot of classic records. Soul album by Otis
I wanted to love it, and Otis sure had some great songs, but this just felt a bit too like typical soul music. Aretha Franklin's cover of Respect also blows Otis' original out the water. Maybe a 3.5/5
It’s impossible to hate on Otis Redding. Change Gonna Come, My Girl, I’ve been Loving You Too Long, these are classics. But I can only rate what’s basically a classic album so high, even if it’s maybe the greatest cover album ever. 7.3/10
Sure it's fine, he has a fantastic voice. It's just a little dull overall, in one ear and out the other. Doubt i'd play it again but there's nothing wrong with it.
Man the production takes all the fun out of this music. So plodding. I’m sure Otis has better versions of those songs on some other albums! I suppose I need to keep in mind the year this was released.
Enjoyable listen and Otis Redding has a great voice.
At first I thought I was really enjoying this. But the best songs are really just covers of other greater artists work. And something in the telling gets lost - they're more pale shadows of great works. There's obviously something to Otis Redding's voice that goes a long way to carrying these, but it's not enough to lift it into the upper echelons of music for me.
Classics but covers. Think I need a few more listens but sometimes the original is vetter
Classic after classic on this one. I need to research rap samples from this album, it has to have been picked apart by producers.
I said this about the Rolling Stones and I'm going to say it about Otis Redding too. Enjoyable, but you're not getting more than a 3 for an album full of covers.
most soul albums sound pretty samey and this one definitely had that vibe. but some classic songs very well done
enjoyed it.
A bit too mellow for me but I'll try again down the road.
decent takes on the classics, knew a lot of the songs.
A fun album but not great across the tracks.
Otis Redding had the perfect voice for this type of music and he puts it to good use here. Didn't love some of the covers but this was an enjoyable listen.
Unterhaltsamer Rythm&Blues. Highlight und wohl bekanntester Song ist "(I can't get no) satisfaction".
Okay, so these are cool re-renderings of old Soul songs by the great Otis Redding. But, it's still like a cross-genre greatest hits type compilation so not scorable on the same level as a regular album.
Hey aso s haut mi jetz ned vom hocker aber grundsätzlich sicher echt tolli musig
Love his voice but something felt a bit off on this one. Not quite sure what.
RIP to a once in a lifetime voice. Best Song: My Girl, I've Been Loving You Too Long Worst Song: N/A
Otis is an instrument
Enjoyable stuff - left me wanting to hear Sam Cooke or Smokey Robinson. Wanted to hear more original Otis Redding - Rolling Stones covers. Easy 3.5 - but rounding down to a 3.
Nice covers - real good album.
Ol' Otis was all over Sam Cooke's booty. Funny that every cover on this album is worse than the original, and then Aretha's Respect cover was so much better than his original! The production seemed a little rough and rushed, not the best of his recordings, albeit impressive.
like it, if I'm in the mood as it's not my usual cup of tea
It’s an ok record filled with covers of great songs. There are a few that have a unique orchestration that makes this a non-typical collection. It’s a reinterpretation of many of these songs. All that being said the back half started boring me because I’d rather listen to the originals. 3/5
Good album with tracks like Wonderful World and Can’t get no satisfaction. I give this 3.5 stars.
favourite: respect, down in the valley, i can't get no satisfaction least favourite: you don't miss your water holy shit those horns on my girl are loud cool album, kind of samey started great then tapered off towards the end reminds me a lot of modern sounds from a while back mayb 7/10
Marvin Gaye's take on some classic 'soul' hits. Love the voice but I kep expecting to hear the 'original' version of the songs
Ole Man Trouble 3.5 Respect 3 Change Gonna Come 3.7 Down in the Valley 3.6 I've Been Loving You Too Long 3.5 Shake 3.4 My Girl 4 Wonderful World 3.8 Rock Me Baby 3.3 Satisfaction 3 You Don't Miss Your Water 3.2 Score: 3.454545455
I was BOOOOOOOORN by the river!
Lekker album.
Of all the songs to be an original composition on what’s essentially an Otis Redding karaoke album, I did not expect it to be Respect. This was good.
Short, sweet, and to the point. Ty Otis
Pretty good short ripper. My girl hit
Respect for Otis. Although hard not to put out a good album with that many cover songs. Guess it turns out he’s more than a one hit wonder. (3.1*s)
Can't get no satisfaction was a nice departure, but otherwise not really my type of a record.
Overall a good listen full of songs you know. The problem to me, is that this is essentially a covers album. Otis wrote or cowrote 3 of the songs.
Soulful
Super heart felt but I feel like he hits the same voice crack every note.
Some classics on here. Nice listen.
It is mainly an album of covers. Very good covers, but I was hoping for something more original.
Album # 24 Good music to have on in the background but mostly covers except for "I've been loving you too long." Not really my jam.
Wertung: 😎😎😎(😎)/5
Otis sings mostly covers while being backed by Booker T and the MG 's with Isaac Hayes on piano. His rendition of Respect is interesting from the comparative perspective of his writing it and Aretha Franklin subsequently turning it into an anthem. Can't say I need to hear it again but I did enjoy the listen.
This album is soulful, smooth, and a classic but it's way too long. It's full of covers (many with several remasters and various versions) and it's just not really my taste. He's great at delivering emotion and his voice has it but after 2+ hours I was done. The horns started having too much of a big band sound and I just wanted it to end. Knocking points off for the length since it left me feeling annoyed.
Otis slays it. Short and sweet, well rounded album with soul, blues, slow jams, and classics. Particularly like the guitar focus (bass and lead) on some songs. No satisfaction left me satisfied. Not sure how you shake like a bowl of soup though...
Otis with very solid entry. Of the soul/R&B stuff I've encountered so far within project, Otis has been the best of the bunch for me. Good range of different sounds and a couple hits that have some lasting effect. 3.0 stars
Classic blues album, would put on as pleasant background music.
About what I expected, lacking a bit of variety but still a classic soul record
Highlights: De uithaal in het begin van I've Been Loving You Too Long My Girl (beter dan the Temptations)
Enjoyed this one. Not something I would listen to on my own. 3.5
Good album. It’s always cool to hear different musicians perform songs that are associated with other musicians. It’s fun but a little distracting.
This is another album where the merits of the album, historical, influential, performance would be higher than my personal rating. While I enjoyed listening to it and would do so again if it came up on the radio, it's not something I would choose to listen to. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to but I wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
Great singer in short doses.
Ah, I wish there were more originals rather than covers here. I did like a few songs tho. Ole man trouble is great, Otis’s vocals and soul is undeniable. Change is really gripping as well. The vocals on down in the valley are so good. He really puts his all into the songs. I’ve been loving… is my fav on the album. Such a good tune. The last song I like is the album closer. Apart from that, respect is done better by aretha, my girl by temptations, satisfaction by the stones, I didn’t vibe with shake - I don’t like dancey upbeat Otis. Rock me baby is good too tho but it wish it had more edge. The riff is so good and it could’ve gone harder. Overall it’s a decent 3 from me.
What a voice! Really enjoyed the horn section too
Otis, my man!! Impassioned, soulful singing. If I’m in the mood for R&B/Soul music, this fits the bill. A little pitchy on “My Girl” but other than that, a solid album.
fine
Of the songs I already knew this is an inferior version of them all. Fine though.
It's a very descriptive title.
Old school cool.
Some classics here. Not really my cup of tea for multiple song listening.
decent album, but don't like the covers of famous songs
Cool album, I liked the covets he did.
Would listen again, como ambiental.
Good performances, did enjoy but not really my style. Will I listen to again: 5%
I like Redding. But there is no spark in the melody. Otis tries his best with his voice and he does a great job.
Man this guy has some pipes! Very soul full and pleasant album to relax too, or dance with someone special. Some great covers too.
some great stuff here and it's held up over the years
Otis Redding has an unmistakable style. It's good, but I tend to prefer the versions of songs I know by other artists, so that tells me I don't really love it. Or I'm easily jarred
So many soul classics here. A smooth and nostalgic listening experience
