It's kinda funny that Elvis thought his career would be over if he was away from the studio for two years. Most of my favorite artists take twice as long for one album. Regardless, though, this is... nonessential. Elvis isn't an albums guy, and it really shows here. Fever and Such a Night are great, but most everything else can be left behind in the $5 bin. Maybe he should have tacked on an extra year in Germany to think this one out more. A 2.5/5 and a conscription letter.

Your run-of-the-mill Elvis record which doesn't have the same draw as it likely did in 1960. I can appreciate that this album was probably HYPED when it came out as it was the first since Elvis was in the military, but it's just a standard pop record from the time period.

Straight up average album. Elvis albums are a product of their time, songs that arent good enough to be singles and covers for filler. His "Fever" cover is the highlight of the album but it doesn't hold a candle to Peggy Lee's version

I appreciate the role Elvis played in popularizing rock and roll, particularly to white audiences. He also clearly played an important part in establishing the public persona of many performers who came after him. Just in terms of the music itself though, I can't hear anything special about it. There are plenty of more interesting examples of early rock and roll out there in my opinion. Maybe if I'd lived through that era, I'd see more to it. The songs are decent but I wouldn't go out of my way for this personally.

I preferred this to the self titled and there was at least some variety and personality on here, but it’s still pretty boring. The cover of Fever was so uninspired. Also low-key hilarious that there’s a song on this called Soulja Boy

I get why this is on the list, but Christ is it dull. A quick glance over other albums released in the same year show startling brilliant jazz albums, landmark blues albums and great folk. Then there's this, middle of the road, acceptable to white radio "rock". Historically important, but musically bland

From what little I know of Elvis this definitely isn't him at his most bombastic or provocative leaving me without much to say about it. Its serviceable early rock and roll at its highs, bizarre downtempo country and western during its lower moments, and the cover of fever is not only weird that he hasn't attempted to put any kind of personality into it at all but also why would you put it second in a track list? Its hardly a big into to an album. Sorry Elvis, its a 2 on this one

Slick, professional, well produced, and the boy can sing, but this is a little disappointing overall. It presents very much as a product rather than an artistic endeavor and lacks the electricity of 1950s Elvis or the soulfulness of later Elvis. The only message that comes across (other than a desire for $$$) is that Elvis was feeling rather randy following two years away with the army. Elvis is great by voice on this album, but I'm just not a fan. Album gets 1 bonus star for the great rendition of fever though.

This does very little for me. Half a star each for 'Make Me Know It', 'Fever', the melody of 'Girl of My Best Friend' and 'The Girl Next Door Went A'Walking'. The rest is incredibly bland. I don't believe this Rock 'n' Roll thing will survive for too long.

p50. 1960. 2 stars Well, this ain't aged well. It's mostly a collection of mediocre pop songs, saved only the Voice. There are maybe 2 songs that stand up to comparison with his pre-Army songbook, and on the couple of occasions that the songs are decent, we have the Jordanaires droning on it. And who let that sax player in?? Seriously, this album sounds like something meant for Bobby Vinton or Pat Boone. The boy had the looks, the moves, and the Voice. Just a shame that he rarely got the songs to match.

Maybe I'm broken but I have never cared much for Elvis.

Great job singing a bunch of cover songs in the iconic Elvis croon, I guess? Happy you were able to return to a successful career after your time in the military. But learning about Presley’s military service was much more interesting than the album. I learned he met Priscilla in Germany. That he decided to enlist as a regular soldier instead of being granted an exemption to be a performer in the Special Services. That the army is where he was introduced to amphetamines. And also that he was drafted when he became eligible at age 21. I can’t figure that one out though. I read about all the changes to draft age eligibility and enlistment length over the years, but what I found said that while the draft age was 21 at one point, it wasn’t in the mid-50s. Oh well, back to underwhelming crooning.

I mean, it's Elvis, I guess you either like his voice or you don't. I could take it or leave it, not an unpleasant listen but equally probably won't be revisiting.

Best Song: Dirty, Dirty Feeling. It was surprisingly difficult to identify anything in this album that was better than the rest, as it all felt very slow and sleepy. This one wins by sounding the least "Elvis", and having an upbeat, (safely) raunchy theme. Worst Song: Soldier Boy. As difficult it was to pick a "star", it was equally difficult to pick a low point in this album. I think this wins because what patience I had for these bloated, self-indulgent ballads had been worn thin by this track. Overall: With music like this, it is very hard to understand how Elvis came to be as famous as he was. Call it a change in tastes, but everything here is rich and overdone, but starting to sour like like milk that's gone bad. To punctuate how terrible it was, after the song ended Spotify automatically transitioned into playing a Little Richard song, which was so fiercely singular and alive that I got whiplash from the juxtaposition. I firmly believe that Elvis is only interesting to people for whom some slightly gyrating hips are considered scandalous.

Colonel Tom Parker neutered the King on this album.

This version of Fever is pretty terrible. Overall, not the best Elvis I've ever heard.

Elvis' first album after the army. You can hear the work he had been putting into his singing during his time away, with a more mature tone and increased range. This was recorded in a top Nashville studio with top players and was his first stereo album.... but all the things that went wrong with Elvis' career in the 60s start here. Designed to be an (inoffensive), 4-quarters crowd-pleaser, appealing to nearly everyone, there is a not a lot of edge here. A couple of ballads, a couple of gospel songs, some inoffensive blues filler, and not a lot of rockin'. Not yet fully leaning into the glory of his maturity (that didn't come until the comeback special and the pompous glory of the 70s), but without the rough immediacy of his Sun years, this is an album designed to be as shiny and mass-market blockbuster as you could possibly get. And, like most early 60s albums, nearly all the good tracks were released as singles and not on the album. This actually plagued him most of his career; poor song choice leading to albums full of filler. The only albums really worth listening to are ones with a particular viewpoint (such as the Memphis album, Christmas albums or gospel albums). This is a completely inessential release from one of the great giants of 20th century popular music. Listen to a best of compilation instead.

Elvis...was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me. Straight up racist that sucker was simple and plain. Come on - that's a memorable lyric. OK the album isn't terrible, it's just... yeah kinda plain. A lot of similar-sounding slow ballads. One thing though - I have to admit this record *sounds* really good; way better than I'd expected for a 1960 album. Recycled simple blues songs for suburban America. Just not my bag. 5/10 2 stars.

The King definitely gets right to work on this one. I never really got into Elvis. Can't deny his music has stood the test of time and persists into contemporary culture. That being said, this stuff is corny. Once in a while a song hits with me like Viva Las Vegas, That's Alright, Suspicious Minds, and in the case of this album, Fever. But everything else is meh for me.

Rock and roll changed a LOT in even the 10 years after this album came out Can't say this is doing much for me, really. It's a bunch of oldies pop songs that has more in common with soul and R&B than it does rock music nowadays. None of these are even the Elvis songs I recognize. This bluesier songs are the best ones here.

Seems almost like a throwaway album the studio put out as an afterthought. Some of the melodies are catchy, but most songs just exist for two minutes and peter out into nothing almost as if Elvis gave up trying to find a suitable ending and just left the stage. Goes without saying this isn't a wholly memorable project.

The rendition of Fever on this album made me feel embarrassed while I was sitting alone, listening to it. The musicianship is great throughout, but this was not for me.

I hate to rate this how I did because it's a great album, but it also feels... tired. The album being the first recorded after his military service makes sense.

Great for it's time, but not great for our time. Hard to rate as it's kind of campy and shallow, but would not have seemed so in 1960 when it came out. More of a gateway to the next generation than part of it. Only a few years later, the rules were completely rewritten by bands like the Beatles, Stones, Who that led to music that still holds up 60 years later. This does not. Elvis' voice and singing is very good for what the music allows, but not much is allowed.

I'm not really an Elvis fan and this album didn't change that even after multiple listens. The band and Elvis sounded good, but the songs were kind of bland. The two tracks that stood out for me were It Feels So Right and The Girl Next Door Went a'Walking.

After returning from military service, Elvis's sound & voice had matured to try different genres of songs on this album - his fourth. The album consists of rock, pop, & blues music with Elvis improving his vocal range as well. This album was one of the first with stereophonic sound, and the new technology was well used by Elvis. I don't really like jamming out to Elvis and the critics of this album didn't like it when it came out, but it was an evolution in Elvis' career and an important piece of music history.

It's more Elvis. That said, I have no idea why this album was chosen. It doesn't contain any of his big hits and is all-round really forgettable.

Not as traumatic as I anticipated, I'm not a fan. This is Elvis all laid back and chilled out, there's not much of the over the top histrionics that his performances often contain. I really quite enjoyed the first half of the album, but then things started to get a bit samey.

While going through the 1001 albums, I've tried to take each project at face value, without any surrounding context. Just listen to and judge the music as it comes. However, the context behind Elvis and his music just can't be ignored for me. The appeal to Elvis Presley is not anything he's recorded. His music is very dry, diluted, and boring. The appeal for Elvis Presley is his performance and his appearance. He's even quoted with saying, "I don't know anything about music. In my line, you don't have to." Many interpret as him being raw, and 'feeling' the music. I interpret this as him not actually caring about he roots of where his genre of music came from, and him being more interested in his fame and popularity at the time. And, he was very popular. It's been said that before Presley, there was nothing. An exaggeration, for sure, there was plenty before Presley (namely, people of color, but let's not get into that right now). He was a pioneer that popularized a new kind of music in America. And for that I give him great credit (But only slightly). As for this album, hard pass for me.

Well, whaddya know. The ink is barely dry on my Buddy Holly review, in which I claimed he had more talent in his little finger than Elvis, and the list immediately throws me an Elvis album as if to prove me wrong. The statement stands. Although I should probably qualify it. Elvis had no MUSICAL talent. The talent he DID have was looking good, wiggling his hips about, and making 13 year old girls damp. And if you can do that then you can sell them any old shit. (Harry Styles will attest to this) I love a good show, and I’d genuinely like to have seen Elvis live in the ’50s to understand what all the fuss was about. But this is an album list, and Elvis Is Back! is an album of bad covers and boring dross, written by other people and seemingly designed to keep teenage girls thinking about Elvis until the next concert. Whatever magic Elvis had, I’m not hearing much of it here.

Even putting aside my moral objections to Elvis as a person, this album was dull and repetitive.

Why did he have to come back? 😢 I don't really care that most of the tracks are covers. It's just that they're all worse than the original. "Fever" in particular is one of my favorite songs from this era, and this is one of the worst renditions of it that I've heard.

Still don't get Elvis, this album didn't change anything. Gyrating hips might represent a step change in how 'rock' stars were marketed and perceived but that doesn't make a bunch of standards written by someone else and sung badly an essential listen. I guess it could be essential in the context that this is after coming back from Vietnam but apart from some nods to coming home and soldiers it doesn't really affect the material. Not for me and I've listened to enough now that I can say with certainly it never will be.

Elvis Costello is the superior Elvis. This wasn't a lot of fun - pretty dreary, boring production. I guess not being a teenage girl in the early 60s clouds my perception, but what is there to go wild about? Some slightly maudlin doo-wop stuff? His version of Fever is perfectly serviceable, he has a distinctive voice. Loads of hits, just none on the album.

He shouldn't have bothered. This is just a huge pile of steaming keech! I've heard others doing many of these songs. In every case these were FAR better than Elvis. His vocals are awful, particularly on Fever. An insult to the entire American people.

I get why black people are mad at Elvis

I asked an AI thingy how many rock/pop albums had been released since 1958. Its conservative estimate was 3-5 million, its more inclusive estimate was 8-12 million. So quite what this dross is doing on a list of 1001 ‘must-hear’ records is beyond me.

The King becomes a Queen! Somehow the king of rockabilly morphs into a crooning easy listener. Tragic.

Honestly, awful boring not what I expected out of an Elvis Presley album at least there could’ve been one good song. There wasn’t even one good song.

Never been an Elvis fan. I've listened to his music and just can't get into it.

I couldn’t wait for this album to be over. The entire piece just feels like a challenge to record the same song as many times as possible. As soon as one song about being hopped up about a girl ends, it’s immediately restarts. The one relatively unique song, ‘fever’, is a cover and therefore can’t earn an additional star. The cultural impact of Elvis is undeniable, but from a pure listening experience, I’ve had few worse.

Well, it was a much simpler time I guess. I think I may have been a backing singer for Elvis in a former life. At least the tracks are very short. My brother loved Elvis, but preferred Shakin’ Stevens, which explains a lot.

I had such hopes at Fever (4), but then the rest was just Elvis. I bet he didn't smash 70 Hot Wings with his comeback after the army.

When he had decent material, Elvis could sing the hell out of a song. Far too often he had this kind of horrible saccharine drivel to deal with. Absolutely brutally bad production with soggy orchestration and no life whatsoever.

Elvis may have been cool then, but who cares now? Seriously. What impact does Elvis have 60 years later? Not much. Like seriously, Elvis has some iconic hits. But there are exactly zero on this album, so what’s the point? Why the hell is this album on this list? It’s utterly unimportant.

Why does the streaming version of this album sound like it's being played underwater? Look, I understand Elvis was foundational in popularizing stealing music and theatrics from black musicians and sanitizing them for white audiences, but this just feels so fucking soulless to me.

I wasn't really familiar with any of tbe songs. He still can't really sing. It is probably better than a one but I will round down.

Still not a fan

My mother loved Elvis. You could go so far as to say that for a time she was obsessed with him. Evidence being a life-sized cardboard cutout of Elvis standing in our kitchen among many other representations of him in memorabilia, e.g. Elvis clock, wallpaper, plates, etc. As you might imagine, I've heard a few Elvis songs and seen some Elvis movies in my time. This record has some okay songs, but nothing that really stands out as an amazing Elvis track. Too be honest, for me the best thing about this record is the typography on the cover and even that isn't the best of its era.

Make me know it - a bland and forgettable opening track. Fever is an excellent track that suits his voice, it shines over the minimal backing - clearly the inspiration for the Cramps cover, but still not as good as the Peggy Lee version 2 years earlier. The girl of my best friend reminds me why I hate a lot of late 50s and early 60s music, slow bland and a real snooze fest. I will be home again can be added to that list too. Dirty Dirty feeling is an anthem for stalking, followed by kidnapping and possibly worse... Thrill of your love. Tedious love song. Soldier Boy - Another slow ballad. Nothing going for it. Such a night - a celebration of a one night stand, a little more upbeat, but still very bland. Couldn't be bothered to listen to the last few tracks beyond the intro. Why is this album on the 1001 list? There must be better Elvis albums out there, and if they are already on the list, then this one doesn't deserve its place.

a hundred times better than the later memphis record we got a couple weeks ago, but minus two stars for "fever", and two stars for priscilla. the performance of "fever" was actually a pretty good cover of peggy lee's arrangement. here's an additional verse i added, mimicking the style, historicity, and politics of peggy lee's additions to the original song by eddie cooley, otis blackwell, and willie john: emmett till and carolyn bryant had a very mad affair when his cousin tried to kill her he said, "curtis, oh don't you dare" she gives me fever with her kisses fever when she holds me tight fever i'm her mister and cousin, won't you treat him right

I do enjoy your rockabilly stuff, ‘Make Me Know It,’ ‘Dirty, Dirty Feeling,’ ‘Girl Next Door Went A-Walking,’ as well as the blues numbers, ‘Like a Baby,’ ‘It Feels So Right,’ ‘Reconsider Baby.’ But the other half of this LP, all those sappy songs about romantic love found and lost… I don’t want 'that' Elvis back. That Elvis should re-enlist. Ahhh, this isn’t an album for me anyway, or most of you, maybe none of you. This is an LP for all the teenage girls in the late 1950’s who pined for Elvis while he served his time in the military. And I’m sure they wet their panties when they saw this cover- all sexy-eyed and coifed hair. Doggone dreamy, this Elvis is. The Jordanaires are here again, doing their doo wop best. Backing band, The Blue Moon Boys, are also back, rockin’ and playing the blues. Not that we hear much from them. Guitarist Scotty Moore is seldom allowed to tear it up. The reigns are loosened up a bit for pianist Floyd Cramer and saxophonist Boots Randolph on the last two numbers. But this is really all about Elvis. And his voice is in fine form, maybe it’s best, at times growling and barking, while other moments just as smooth and soft as a milkshake. If you like Elvis, you’ll enjoy this LP. And, if you’re not a fan (and I'm not), then there’s nothing here that’s going to change your mind. It is what it is: Elvis Presley. And he’s back. But baby, he never really left your aching heart in the first place, did he?
