Elvis ain't an album guy for me. Up there with Queen for all time Greatest Hits Only artists. 2.5/5
Would have been better without the Jordanaires.
It was fine. Standout song: Fever
Oh Elvis? Right, fine. Let's have a look at the "King of the Rock n Roll" or how I like to refer to him, the man who got famous stealing black people's music and maybe writing a couple of his own songs. Knowing he probably wrote none of the songs on this album does take away from the attempted enjoyment of this album. The album starts well enough, very 60s swing and early signs of what eventually became rock n roll. Fever can sod off, it's the delivery of the entire song stinks of ego. "Don't ya worry I'll just snap my fingers the entire song, that's all I need". Elvis does do well in his delivery throughout album, most notable tracks being The Girl of my Best Friend, Dirty Dirty Feeling, which is a upbeat 2 minutes swinging track, it would be even better if he wrote the cunt but anyway. Overall it's an album, the credit goes to the backing musicians more so than anything else and if you want to listen to the actual origins of Rock n Roll, listen to Sister Rosetta Tharpe who was doing what Elvis stole in the 30s, 40s and 50s. 1.8/5 MTW Good fucking god here we go. In a shocking turn of events, I do infact agree with MTW, I objectively quite like Elvis, subjectively is a bit touch and go. The lore of this album is a little bit nuts, fresh off his stint in the army, Elvis has a new depth to his voice; his interpretations were increasingly sophisticated; the group was probably the best studio band in the business; the song selection is imaginative and varied (alas, this is simply nothing to do with him), the technical quality is absolutely excellent. Most surprisingly of all, for Elvis. this album pointed in no one musical direction, it's almost as if Elvis had invented his own brand of music, broken down the barriers and included everything he heard in all the kinds of music he loved (stole). I have very little else to say, as I find the morals hard to approach. It's good, but not his. 2.5/5 - HF x P.s - He is a nonce This is not a record you need to listen to before you die. Elvis as a whole is someone you need to familiarise yourself with before you die. You should probably watch a few documentaries about him (not that god awful biopic with the man who now talks like Elvis full-time). You should probably even watch his comeback special in the full leather pervert outfit, because it's actually class. You do not need to listen to any Elvis record before you die. To paraphrase Alan Partridge; "My favourite Elvis album? I'd have to say... the Best of Elvis". But even then you could probably have a decent enough time without listening to fucking Hound Dog. The majority of tunes on 'Is Back!' have been performed by better artists who produced better versions. A record of no highlights that you could play in a pub and people would probably be okay with it (although they'd hear the voice and perhaps lament it wasn't one of the more familiar Elvis 'hits' playing). An overall dull experience but a necessary figure in music who moved along the theft of blues, soul etc from black people so we could have Led Zeppelin. Cheers you paedo. 1.8/5 JF
mid for Elvis. still has that great voice, nice harmonic backing singers and melody. nothing stood out.
My mom always told me that you were either an Elvis person or a Beatles person. Turns out I'm a Beatles person I guess. I liked Fever, but that's not an original to Elvis, and arguably done better by Peggy Lee. Hunka hunka boring album.
Enjoyed the Elvis educational. Again a sound ive heard countless times, still, a pleasant ballad. Origin of pop is here.
I appreciated the length of this album! I have never been a fan of Elvis but I must admit to having a lot more empathy for him since watching the recent biopic.
Elvis wrapping up a mediocre week - maybe I would have felt differently if I'd heard his music in the landscape of other musicians at the time? Huge cultural impact, but his music doesn't do anything for me. At least it was a quickie.
I simply have no interest in Elvis music. 2 stars or D.
I'm not really sure how I feel about this album, nothing memorable the next day when writing the review...
A bit hokey at times, but some good tracks mixed in there.
Ik begrijp Elvis nog steeds niet helemaal
I can't lie, I was a bit disappointed by this album. There were no real standout tracks, nothing that remotely sounded like a classic Elvis track (in my opinion). I made it all the way through and 2 stars feels about right.
Relatively unremarkable album with a few standout tracks and many that have become very dated. 2/5
Eh. I was fine with it for like 3-4 songs. Maybe microdosing is the way to go with Elvis
in terms of cultural relevance or impact, i can't really argue with elvis's inclusion on this list but that doesn't mean i have to like him or his crappy rip off music
I like some Elvis music -- songs with a little more gusto -- just fine. This seems way too languid.
Some decent tunes on here but overall felt very middle of the road and too slick; for someone who is deemed the king of rock'n'roll there was a lack of energy and spirit as well as any real energy or... rock'n'roll. The backing vocals also sound very cheesy and dated, generally don't see the appeal despite a few good tracks
2.25
didn't like it but I enjoyed it
He probably could have stayed where he was tbh. I either want "early raw Elvis" or "can barely move but LOOK AT THAT SEQUIN JUMPSUIT Elvis".
Eh, Elvis...
just cant get exited by Elvis.
Gets dull quickly
As much as he is a legend, he is not an "album- artist"
Not really into Elvis tbh
meh. Elvis.
Perfectly inoffensive and not more. He’s white????
I don't care for Elvis. Elvis go back !
I’m sure this album had its time and place and was great and groundbreaking back in the day. But it kinda sucks. The only worthwhile track is Fever. Lots of piano hammering chords, lots of shrill guitar lines and that drum beat that everyone played back then in every song. The song “It Feels so Right” is ok and a little different from the rest of the album but still has the background doo-wop singing.
Pros: the Jordanaires Cons: the rest
2/5
Fine, a bit boring. Elvis has a nice voice, but nothing about this music is particularly attention holding to me. Can't remember any of the tracks after listening
Can’t say I’m a huge fan of 50s/60s music
This is #day213 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... guess who’s back, back again? Elvis is back, tell a friend. Or should you? This is my second Elvis Presley album on the list, and once again, I’m giving it a 2 out of 5. The cover of "Fever" is fine, but the rest of the album is dated rock 'n roll that I’m just not feeling. Looking forward to #day214.
I don't want him, send him back!
Kinda snoozeville and he seems to sound different in every song!
Meh
Like looking at grandmas collection of porcelain dolls. At some point in history this might be considered interesting, but not in my world.
Old
Elvis is back but it wasn’t worth it
Pre-listening thoughts: well okay. We already got the one with suspicious minds and that is his best song by miles so I’m just going to be lukewarm on pretty much anything else from Elvis that comes my way. I mean, I’d like for him to pleasantly surprise me but I doubt that will happen. Post/during listening thoughts: yeah this is 100% what I expected. Very doo-wop of the 1950s seeping into the 60s. I can’t deny that Elvis has a nice voice but overall this style of music just isn’t quite for me. It’s just kind of repetitive and boring. Crazy how the audio quality on this is better than Californication and that was 30 yrs after this. 4.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Such a Night Least fav tracks: meh on most of it but didn’t outright dislike it ya feel?
Perfectly average record. I think Elvis may be one of those artists where the singles are amazing but full LPs are lacking.
Well, I listened to an Elvis record so I can now say that about myself.
I am an Elvis fan, but not an Elvis album fan. I feel like he has soooo many albums so rarely do any have more than 1 hit on them (if they even have any). This album was fine. Liked Songs: "Make Me Know it" , "I Will Be Home Again" , "Thrill of Your Love" , "Such a Night" , "It Feels So Right"
liked songs: Fever I understand this being groundbreaking if the only music you had ever heard in your life was church hymns, but holy hell this is boring. In reality this isn't that bad, but I really don't like it. Fever is good, but the original is better. 2

He's the king for a reason, but this album was surprisingly slim on the hits
I mean, it's rock and roll Elvis. I don't listen to Elvis but this sounds like the Elvis I've heard that's not the ballady stuff which I like even less. He's just not my thing. A few cool musical bits, like the guitar on "Dirty, Dirty Feeling" or maybe the whole real-ass blues feel of "Reconsider Baby." So, like some of these reviews, half is musical appreciation and some of it's simply taste. (6 know/11 new)
Not really a fan of Elvis and this big budget and slightly souless production didn't change that. The move away from rock n roll did not serve him well, in my view.
Elvis' first album after the army. You can hear the work he had been putting into his singing during his time away, with a more mature tone and increased range. This was recorded in a top Nashville studio with top players and was his first stereo album.... but all the things that went wrong with Elvis' career in the 60s start here. Designed to be an (inoffensive), four-quarters crowd-pleaser, appealing to absolutely everyone, there is a not a lot of edge here. A couple of ballads, a couple of gospel songs, some inoffensive blues filler, and not a lot of rockin' going on. Elvis is not yet fully leaning into the glory of his maturity (that didn't come until the comeback special and the bombastic glory of the 70s), but without the energetic immediacy of his Sun years, this is an album designed to be as big and shiny a mass-market blockbuster as you could possibly produce. And, like most early 60s albums, nearly all the good tracks were released as singles and not on the album. This actually plagued him most of his career; poor song choice leading to albums full of filler. The only albums really worth listening to are ones with a particular viewpoint (such as the Memphis album, Christmas albums or gospel albums). This is a completely inessential release from one of the great giants of 20th century popular music. Listen to a best of compilation instead. There are a zillion to choose from, and they are all excellent.
Very middle of the road Elvis, instantly forgettable and the few songs I knew had better versions by other artists in my opinion. It wasn't very long and it wasn't bad, just nothing special. I'm going with a strong 2 stars.
Haven’t listened to a lot of Elvis outside of the hits and whatever my Nan has played while visiting. Listening to this I wasn’t sure whether to be impressed or disappointed. I’d heard that he was unoriginal but talented and that he was an incredibly charismatic performer. And after listening to this I’m certain that Elvis was both talented and charismatic, but neither to the degree I had been lead to believe. The opening track kicks off with a nice amount of energy but the lyrics and short runtime of the song don’t really give the song the depth or the time to develop into a full piece. The fade to silence at the end makes the song feel unfinished and that’s the feeling I get from this track overall, fun and upbeat but shallow and unfinished. Fever might be my highlight from the album surprisingly. A relatively low energy but steady and smooth instrumental allows Elvis to croon over top with sultry lyrics that I’m sure made hundreds of fans swoon at the time. I think the simple lyrical concept works for this and it handily achieves what it was aiming for, albeit with a more sexual undertone than you would usually hear on an Elvis song ( from what I’ve heard). Although I think the song feels perpetually building to something and could have benefitted from a climax such as instrumental break or solo. Nothing really stood out from the next track, The girl of my best friend. Very much felt like Elvis by the numbers, again too short to really develop into anything and once again relying on a face out ending. I will be home again feels like Elvis putting his spin on a nostalgic ballad for home al la John Denver. The tempo is notably slower and the acoustic guitar errs with the sounds of country and is easily the best part of the song. I would be interested to hear this without the backing vocals and Elvis taking a less overstated performative vocal swing at this. But alas it feels soulless and shallow. But at least the song feels finished and has a definitive ending?! Dirty Dirty Feeling is fun and very high energy, the rhythmic sections of the track are very fun and the interplay between the drums and guitar are very well done. The instrumentals and melody of the vocals held my attention to the point where I wasn’t really paying attention to the lyrics which I guess is a positive? But frustratingly the song ends abruptly at a point where I feel like a new idea could have been introduced. Although this is probably my favourite of the shorter upbeat songs. Thrill of Your Love is one of the slow love songs about a nondescript girl that every pop star makes with no distinguishable edge or interesting writing or performance, think some of the Beatles worse singles or even a Justin Bieber song. (although 9/10 times I would rather listen to this). It feels like it was made to sell records and it doesn’t have anything unique or particularly well done to show for it. Soldier boy This feels like a song that was actually written with a tangible theme in mind. The song surrounds a soldier whose girlfriend awaits him back at home, but the soldier is afraid that she won’t wait for him. What I can only imagine was a very common fear for soldiers around the world, this song feels genuinely nice and knowing that Elvis was part of the military at some point this feels like it could be hinting at some genuine emotions he had experienced or at least those around him. Although the lyrics are nice it could do with another verse. But a much better song than some of the others. Such a night is well made and performed and feels like a full complete song without any cut corners. It’s charismatically sang by Elvis and his back up singers. Not a lot more to say, this is far closer to what I had been expecting from an Elvis track and although predictable, thoroughly enjoyable. I’m running out of things to say about these songs now, It feels so right is fine, nothing particularly impressive or terrible about it. Album is starting to drag a bit by this point which is impressive for a 31 minute release. Last couple songs flew I can’t help feeling that by this time in his career Elvis was such a hit that some level of label interference lead to an incoherent and almost unfinished in some places album. As usual I’ve not read up on the history of this album so I’m willing to be completely wrong about this. This album could have been a strong release if the fat was trimmed and a couple of the songs were a bit more baked. On a positive note I didn’t mention during the rest of the notes is that the recording quality is excellent and far better than I had expected. 2.5/5
..
It’s Elvis, so I won’t get too upset that it’s on here, but it’s such a mediocre album by his standards. I’m going subtract a star for this album not including the single that was released in advance of this album that somehow didn’t get on this album - Stuck On You.
Without any other knowledge on this album, I feel like most of these songs have not stood the test of time, even if the album was a hit contemporaneously. Favorite song: Such A Night Least Favorite Song: Solder Boy
the lyrics on a lot of the songs on this album have not aged well, if the lyrics we not as bad i would have given it a 4 because i really like this kind of music but the lyrics weirded me out a little too much
I mean, it's Elvis, if you're i to that sort of thing.
Nothing really to write home about with this one. Couple of decent tracks save it from being a 1
I’m torn - Elvis is an icon with some fantastic songs and delivery. But I was seriously underwhelmed here. Nothing stood out. I remembered nothing five minutes after it finished and I feel like I’m betraying a legend. But I’m just not sold. I think maybe it was of it’s time and if you’d been waiting for Elvis to leave the army and come out with something new, this was probably manna from heaven. Spoiler alert, he gets better later.
I listened to this while playing a game with friends, so my attention was not 100% focused. Still, I'm confused why this album was deemed worthy of inclusion. It's not terrible. It's worse. it's bland. Of all the OG rock 'n rollers, Elvis' oeuvre has held up the least well. It seems quaint and even puzzling when compared to that of Chuck Berry and Little Richard. (Though Elvis' Sun Sessions are definitely worth checking out. That music is pure fire.) But he went from being an R&B and proto-punk legend to a cheesy cornball in the span of a year. He had a brief period of near-greatness again in 68-69, but that was it. For this album, I guess you had to be there.
Meh
It's Elvis, what else is there Yo say?
Maar het is Elvis, en vertolkingen als 'Fever', 'Such a Night' en 'Make Me Know It' zijn gewoon ijzersterk. 6/10 Highlights: Fever Such a Night Make Me Know It
Meer Elvis = meer van hetzelfde. Niet warm of koud. 5/10 Highlights The Girl of My Best Friend
One of their best
Just not my thing. There's other artists who do it better, and this just feels too clean for rockabilly or blues. 2/5
Oh look who's back! Another Very Important Figure in the anglophone music world! And with that: he's gone. 3/3 Elvis Presley ✔ and I won't miss him in here one bit. (The Memphis album was cool, tho. Would have sufficed.) I cannot imagine a mood or situation in which I'd put this on, as an album, and be like "yeah, nice!"
I didn't realize how long a 32 minute album could feel.
It's Elvis. I can fully see why he was so big at the time. But its just not really my cup of tea. though it is reasonable listening just a 2 from me.
I'm a luddite, i never realised that 'Fever' was Presley. With its minimalist arrangements, he produced such a captivating performance with that song alone. The rest ventured into equal helpings of Dowap (nope) and rock and roll (yes). If it wasn't for this 1001 thing, I'd never have listened to an Elvis album ever, and enjoy some of it.
I'm not a big fan of Elvis in general, although I do enjoy most of his big hits. This seems like one that was included for cultural significance though rather than musical quality. The only songs I really enjoyed were the first two, It Feels So Right, and Reconsider Baby.
It’s a very mellow and kind of meh Elvis album. I prefer his upbeat songs. He is much more of a single artist than an album artist.
Elvis is just one of those artists who was so popular back in the day, that his popularity can still be seen in the modern age. But wow this is painfully mediocre and has not at all stood the test of time.
OK, but how many elvis albums are on this list? Elvis was a hero to most But he never meant shit to me you see Straight up racist that sucker was Simple and plain Mother fuck him and John Wayne 2/5
Not more Elvis!!! Elvis is phenomenon and a legend, I get this, but he has not made a good album he just has a great voice and sings what he is told to sing! There are some nice tracks on this like the girl of my best friend and Like a baby Favourite song: The girl of my best friend Least favourite: Soldier boy Album artwork: Standard Elvis album cover
My mom was a big Elvis fan growing up and I think that's pretty cool. There was some groovy music on this album, but none of the big bangers (except Fever which there are better versions of) and none that I will put on to listen to again.
Ew
meh. i like fever but not really done by elvis
(The rating excludes 'Fever')
Meh
Elvis is back from the army and he's still doing the covers. His version of "Fever" pales in comparison to Peggy Lee's original. He'd soon disappear into the movie era and wasn't interesting again until he had to comeback again a decade or so later.
seksijumala is back. aAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHH!!! ette nuoret ymmärrä.. jos näet meidät vanhat käppänät akat kaduilla... tiedätte että hullu elämä takana... nuoruudessammi elvissin lerssiä suikkeliin vedettii... siis nuoruudessa... hyvin nuoruudessa siis... aikuine mies tekee teinityttömusiikkia heh, ei paljoa muuttunut vuosikymmenien aikana... sitten se meni bulkkiin ja kuoli, missäs kuullu tuommosen tarinan aikaisemmin?? tai myöhemmin.... never dirty bulk fellas.... never dirty bulk. KUNINGAS... meikän kunkku on kuningaskotka janne ahonen, en tiiä minkä vitun monarkki tämä herra on mutta olipas paska albumi fever
I guess I’m one of those people who just likes Elvis’ hits. Because this wasn’t an essential album for me. It’s pleasant enough. But none of the covers are among my favourites and it features 0 of his well known tunes. 2.5/5
That 31 minutes dragged. Elvis seemed to have done like 5 good songs and then recycled them for his whole career.
I appreciate who Elvis was, what he represented, and what he did for music broadly. That being said, Elvis has never been interesting to me. There are a few well known songs that I think are fine, but Ive just never had any interest in actively listening to Elvis.
aight. it's elvis. classic.
Everything that boomers say modern music does to “ruin” it could be said about this album. It’s a bunch of really safe, unimaginative filler highlighted by one or two would be singles pushed by a pretty face and written by a bunch of industry execs just to sell more albums instead of do anything innovative or artistic. Really makes you think…
Kind of a middle of the ground Elvis record, not super amazing or really showy like the Vegas era records.
Am I tired of hearing Elvis on this project? Or was this one just really extra boring when compared to some of the other Elvis albums on the project? Maybe both. But seriously, I think this is the most bland and sleepy Elvis album that I've had on this project so far, and that really doesn't help when someone already doesn't like Elvis. There just really wasn't a standout on this album for me to speak of.
This album is supposed to reflect a more mature Elvis, fresh from his military service and ready to show a new side of himself. However, I find that his music still doesn’t resonate with me, mature or not. Elvis and his music aren’t necessarily bad, but they don’t strike any emotional chord with me. The standout moments on this album are the country, blues, and jazz elements, which were interesting, but overall, it wasn’t compelling enough for me to want to listen again.
Certainly an album full of Elvis’s standard sound, but without anything that really stands out, except for “Fever” which is a good cover but substandard compared to Peggy Lee (who also wasn’t the original). Just overall mediocre compared to most Elvis efforts.
Average
I didn't care for this one. Nothing against Elvis in particular, just never been big on that 50s sound.
Just doesn't do it for me.
I love Elvis, but I generally wasn’t into this
I like the more blues Elvis songs. This one has a distinct late 50's rock feel, which isn't my favorite.
Did not expect that I would not like this
Super meh. No wonder it took like 40 years to hit gold. I would argue I did not need to hear this one before I die.
I just dont care
Listening to Elvis cover “Fever” makes me break out in a cold sweat. It’s a shame the Dutch KFC Col. made Elvis be a gigantic sell-out for the majority of his career. He sings well but it’s creepy since it’s directed to teen girls.
Elvis creeps me out and this was pretty dull.
idgi
I used to think I liked Elvis but it turns out his hits were OK and his full albums are uninspiring. As always, he didn't write anybody the songs on the album, only sings them. So even if this album was good, all the credit shouldn't go to Elvis.
Here comes the Elvis slander: he's just some fella with wild hip gyrations, unnaturally jet black dyed hair, and a 4th grade reading level of lyricism. To me, he's highly overrated, and his music sounds like janky Christmas-adjacent. I disliked this album more and more as it progressed. Can we stop venerating him??
Definitely old core. Seems like you'd have to have lived through it for it. Will I listen to again: 1%
I'm not sure why the 1001 book included this album - this list is supposed to favor singer-songwriters, while "Elvis Is Back!" is just a collection of covers of songs that were already popular before Elvis recorded them. He didn't even write any of them. And as covers go, these tracks are kind of ... well ... blah.
Kind of run of the mill Elvis. Nothing special or fun.
Well, this is a rather dull album, perhaps Presley's first move towards the cabaret circuit following his spell in the army. I didn't care much for this album, though I've always loved 'Fever', and I can't see why it's one of the 1001 albums I should listen to! 2/5
It's Elvis. It's ok...
The King! When Presley got drafted in 1958, he was only away from the music business for two years. Turns out that two years away did wonders for his image, as he gained respect from those who weren't sold on his music prior, while also building demand from fans who desperately wanted more Elvis. The result is pretty tame. Compared to the hard-hitting bangers of Jailhouse Rock and Blue Suede shoes, Elvis Is Back! was fairly tame. Ballad after ballad, this album's core appeal was to make girls swoon while also being respectable for older audiences. Indeed, gone was the controversial hip-gyrating songs and appeal of a younger, pre-military Elvis. I think that's a shame! Presley's career went through a few distinct eras, but Elvis Is Back! would mark his most underwhelming era: boring music, bad acting career, and finding Jesus. These songs aren't so bad, but it's not much to praise either.
Good vocals, good production, but just doesn't do a whole lot for me.
Elvis has hits but also it’s a bit dated
2/5. While I generally like Elvis, I much more enjoy the Blue Suede Shoes Elvis than this Elvis which I thought was uninspiring.
Meh some are pretty upbeat and I can picture then being popular for dancing to in the 1960s.
Basic rockabilly með hressandi yfirdrifnum bakröddum og tómatssósu rokkheimsins í fararbroddi. Ég hlusta til þess að þið þurfið þess ekki.
Not an Elvis fan I learned from this album
36/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 This album did not know much commercial success and I can see why. Pretty uninspired and generic. It's a well-produced consumer product, so it gets two stars, rather than one. Oh, that bluesy number at the end earned it a few more points.
This is that stereotypical-Elvis sound that I was surprised wasn't super prevalent in his debut, but that is hardly a good thing. I find this album to be boring most of the time, with the changing sounds of including jazzier instrumentation to be predictable rather than something daring from the pop star. Perhaps were I alive in 1960 and heard the changing sounds I'd be like "holy shit!" but instead I feel like I'm hearing what everyone else hears when the name "Elvis" is muttered.
Well.. boring somehow. Too dated for my taste
Learning that rock and roll with and rock are technically different things was weird. Not gonna lie though, I don't care very much for "rock and roll". I find it to be a weak sub-genre of rock music. And it just feels very bland and basic to me. Maybe it just hasn't aged very well. But Elvis Presley is easily the most famous artist from this era of music. But he isn't the best by any means. I saw someone say that he isn't much of an album artist, and I would have to agree with them. Elvis was known far better for his infectious and attractive stage presence, and for being Hollywood's King of Rock and Roll. But none of that works very well in album form. There just isn't much for me to take away from this. I like very few of these songs because this isn't my thing. I'm not a squealing teenage girl from the 50's. And I don't really click with Elvis. Plus he was a creep. Rating: 4/10
If it's true that you're either an Elvis fan or you're a Beatles fan, then I'm the latter. I get it. He's slick, handsome, got that whole pelvis thing going on... But there's better music from the era within this genre. Elvis gets a bump because he's Elvis? Nope. Hey, his backup band is among the best in the biz. They have to be to buoy up their frontman.
Exactly what you'd expect from Elvis, probably pretty ground breaking at the time.
Not my fav elvis
I mean it's Elvis doing Elvis. I always enjoy a good cover of Fever and a few of the songs got my toes tapping but all in all...meh.
It's not bad. Decent vocals, and it was pleasantly surprising to hear so much piano from \"the king of rock and roll,\" but this is another one where I had a hard time getting into something made a few decades before I was born. Just not my jam. I was, however, blown away by how many albums are in his discography. I'm familiar with about10 Elvis songs, but the dude apparently cranked out a billion or so.
Elvis is pretty boring most of the time.
Very smooth, mostly easy listening stuff. Nothing that really gets the pulse racing though, even Fever loses a bit of oomph when you actually listen to the words. 2/5.
Elvis is Back! Unfortunately, I didn't ask for him. Its just a bunch of semi-interesting songs, nothing popular, just audibly sang by Elvis. I'm not his fan, although I enjoy his music, just not from this album.
It’s fine. The facade of his celebrity does a lot more work for his reputation than these songs do. People like Big Mama Thornton, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and Little Richard are so much better IMO.
It's an Elvis album. The descriptions talk about how he stretched out on this one but I don't know, it just sounds like Elvis. He's best known for singles so if you are looking for a record full of Elvis songs you've never heard that aren't as good as the singles, have I got the record for you.
This release marked Elvis' first album of new material since 1957. At the peak of Elvis' popularity, he received a military draft notice and subsequently completed his service of 3 years. He returned with this album of mostly blues/R&B ballads. Gone were the rockabilly hits that he was known for. Most of the songs are weak to be honest. Many black R&B artists from the same time period did this music much better.
I guess you had to be there. I know from my Dad that Elvis was a huge deal back in the day, similar to say the Beatles. But in contrast I think the Beatles had more substance and creativity. Case in point, none of the songs here are originals. and Fever which is probably the best song on the album was done better by Peggy Lee. Perhaps So apart from his boyishly cute looks and swivel hips, I don't think he brought much to the table here.
Elvis is back! Thank god only for 31 minutes.
how could someone listen to him?
There are better Elvis albums, surely.
Not his well known songs, but some interesting things. I'm not generally an Elvis fan, so score reflects this
It's kinda funny that Elvis thought his career would be over if he was away from the studio for two years. Most of my favorite artists take twice as long for one album. Regardless, though, this is... nonessential. Elvis isn't an albums guy, and it really shows here. Fever and Such a Night are great, but most everything else can be left behind in the $5 bin. Maybe he should have tacked on an extra year in Germany to think this one out more. A 2.5/5 and a conscription letter.
Your run-of-the-mill Elvis record which doesn't have the same draw as it likely did in 1960. I can appreciate that this album was probably HYPED when it came out as it was the first since Elvis was in the military, but it's just a standard pop record from the time period.
A collection of songs 2/5
Fever is a heater. Really like guitar part in "It Feels So Right". Rest of the album didn't do much for me.
i didn't like it. it's not my taste but his voice is nice.
Straight up average album. Elvis albums are a product of their time, songs that arent good enough to be singles and covers for filler. His "Fever" cover is the highlight of the album but it doesn't hold a candle to Peggy Lee's version
I appreciate the role Elvis played in popularizing rock and roll, particularly to white audiences. He also clearly played an important part in establishing the public persona of many performers who came after him. Just in terms of the music itself though, I can't hear anything special about it. There are plenty of more interesting examples of early rock and roll out there in my opinion. Maybe if I'd lived through that era, I'd see more to it. The songs are decent but I wouldn't go out of my way for this personally.
meh
Listening to this on the toilet just to flex on him.. Diggin the energy in dirty, dirty feeling tho I guess it’s cool that it’s a “welcome home album” like it’s cool he was in the army I guess but it doesn’t make the music any more enjoyable for me
I preferred this to the self titled and there was at least some variety and personality on here, but it’s still pretty boring. The cover of Fever was so uninspired. Also low-key hilarious that there’s a song on this called Soulja Boy
Of all the Elvis albums...this makes the list? Ok.... Standouts: Fever Others: The Girl of My Best Friend, Soldier Boy, Rating: 2.5
There must be better Elvis albums than this
Couple of good songs and lots of filler. Favorite song: Fever.
Pretty much what you'd expect from elvis
I thought he had never left?
Typical Elvis
It was a rushed cash grab album. Nothing really outstanding.
Significantly past its expiration date, but, frankly, I don't think it ever belonged here. It's pretty boring, and far from being a cohesive album.
Old Elvia album Ok but not my thing
Ho-hum. The big tunes you'll know and it's all starting to go a bit Vegas. Again, not an albums artist. Still, it's short. And a nice pic on the cover.
Meh
I love Elvis but I find this to be one of his least exciting albums. I think this is when his management was trying to give him the “good guy” image
I was a Beatles kid - Elvis felt irrelevant despite their love for him. This is another collection of good but not great stuff
So old-timey! I dunno, still thought it was kind of fun.
Lost on me. Not bad just no real impact.
I understand why he was such a phenomena, right, place, right person, right time and right voice, but his style of music, even the later stuff is not to my liking. That said I do appreciate his talents, and that of his management company who managed to keep him in the limelight, even when he was doing his national service. It’s not a bad album, it’s Just not an album that I would listen to because it’s not a genre that I can get into
Dull
I get why this is on the list, but Christ is it dull. A quick glance over other albums released in the same year show startling brilliant jazz albums, landmark blues albums and great folk. Then there's this, middle of the road, acceptable to white radio "rock". Historically important, but musically bland
I mean, it's an Elvis album. I didn't find this one especially special, and it's certainly something that I wouldn't listen to again.
Letsugas.
Elvis is kind of ass tbh. Really dated album.
From what little I know of Elvis this definitely isn't him at his most bombastic or provocative leaving me without much to say about it. Its serviceable early rock and roll at its highs, bizarre downtempo country and western during its lower moments, and the cover of fever is not only weird that he hasn't attempted to put any kind of personality into it at all but also why would you put it second in a track list? Its hardly a big into to an album. Sorry Elvis, its a 2 on this one
Nothing wrong with Elvis. But this is forgettable
This ain’t it.
I can respect what Elvis did for music but his voice just doesn't do it for me. It just feels flat and boring.
Elvis has to be on this list. His influence is unmatched in music as we know it today. That being said, this album being on this list makes no sense. I think it’s boring and not even close to his best.
Shakey voice snakey hips ginger eyes and swollen lips. The king of shopkeepers second to none uses the power of a compact bum.
Not a great Elvis album. Back of your gran's record box.
We've had a few Elvis albums on the 1001 list; undeniable culturally significant, but this album feels like factory churn to cash in after his army service.
Peruselvarii. Parhaimmat muilla levyillä
meh
I expected more from this album. Dr. Evil seems to have stolen his mojo.
Slick, professional, well produced, and the boy can sing, but this is a little disappointing overall. It presents very much as a product rather than an artistic endeavor and lacks the electricity of 1950s Elvis or the soulfulness of later Elvis. The only message that comes across (other than a desire for $$$) is that Elvis was feeling rather randy following two years away with the army. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Dirty, Dirty Feeling Date listened: 18/11/22
Not his best. Mostly dodgy balads.
This is light and fun and you can see why people loved it. Too bad it was basically all stolen goods.
Bros before hoes, Elvis. First Listen?: Y Fav. Tracks: Such a Night Rating: 2/5
it'd be 3.5 if he hadn't written songs about fucking a thirteen year old, and had maybe chosen the blackwell/cooley lyrics of fever instead of peggy lee's genocidal version
Never been a fan of Elvis. Not impressed. Songs were just A-OK. 2/5
He's back.
Elvis is great by voice on this album, but I'm just not a fan. Album gets 1 bonus star for the great rendition of fever though.
This does very little for me. Half a star each for 'Make Me Know It', 'Fever', the melody of 'Girl of My Best Friend' and 'The Girl Next Door Went A'Walking'. The rest is incredibly bland. I don't believe this Rock 'n' Roll thing will survive for too long.
'Dirty, Dirty Feeling' oof
It is what it is
p50. 1960. 2 stars Well, this ain't aged well. It's mostly a collection of mediocre pop songs, saved only the Voice. There are maybe 2 songs that stand up to comparison with his pre-Army songbook, and on the couple of occasions that the songs are decent, we have the Jordanaires droning on it. And who let that sax player in?? Seriously, this album sounds like something meant for Bobby Vinton or Pat Boone. The boy had the looks, the moves, and the Voice. Just a shame that he rarely got the songs to match.
Maybe I'm broken but I have never cared much for Elvis.
Great job singing a bunch of cover songs in the iconic Elvis croon, I guess? Happy you were able to return to a successful career after your time in the military. But learning about Presley’s military service was much more interesting than the album. I learned he met Priscilla in Germany. That he decided to enlist as a regular soldier instead of being granted an exemption to be a performer in the Special Services. That the army is where he was introduced to amphetamines. And also that he was drafted when he became eligible at age 21. I can’t figure that one out though. I read about all the changes to draft age eligibility and enlistment length over the years, but what I found said that while the draft age was 21 at one point, it wasn’t in the mid-50s. Oh well, back to underwhelming crooning.
I mean, it's Elvis, I guess you either like his voice or you don't. I could take it or leave it, not an unpleasant listen but equally probably won't be revisiting.
Best Song: Dirty, Dirty Feeling. It was surprisingly difficult to identify anything in this album that was better than the rest, as it all felt very slow and sleepy. This one wins by sounding the least "Elvis", and having an upbeat, (safely) raunchy theme. Worst Song: Soldier Boy. As difficult it was to pick a "star", it was equally difficult to pick a low point in this album. I think this wins because what patience I had for these bloated, self-indulgent ballads had been worn thin by this track. Overall: With music like this, it is very hard to understand how Elvis came to be as famous as he was. Call it a change in tastes, but everything here is rich and overdone, but starting to sour like like milk that's gone bad. To punctuate how terrible it was, after the song ended Spotify automatically transitioned into playing a Little Richard song, which was so fiercely singular and alive that I got whiplash from the juxtaposition. I firmly believe that Elvis is only interesting to people for whom some slightly gyrating hips are considered scandalous.
Colonel Tom Parker neutered the King on this album.
Elvis kinda overrated tbh
This version of Fever is pretty terrible. Overall, not the best Elvis I've ever heard.
Elvis' first album after the army. You can hear the work he had been putting into his singing during his time away, with a more mature tone and increased range. This was recorded in a top Nashville studio with top players and was his first stereo album.... but all the things that went wrong with Elvis' career in the 60s start here. Designed to be an (inoffensive), 4-quarters crowd-pleaser, appealing to nearly everyone, there is a not a lot of edge here. A couple of ballads, a couple of gospel songs, some inoffensive blues filler, and not a lot of rockin'. Not yet fully leaning into the glory of his maturity (that didn't come until the comeback special and the pompous glory of the 70s), but without the rough immediacy of his Sun years, this is an album designed to be as shiny and mass-market blockbuster as you could possibly get. Listen to a best of compilation instead.
of course elvis is one of the most famous people /singers to exist but his music isn’t all that special… it was totally normal and i know that it was really good back in the day but on modern times it was nothing i’d listen to again
Elvis...was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me. Straight up racist that sucker was simple and plain. Come on - that's a memorable lyric. OK the album isn't terrible, it's just... yeah kinda plain. A lot of similar-sounding slow ballads. One thing though - I have to admit this record *sounds* really good; way better than I'd expected for a 1960 album. Recycled simple blues songs for suburban America. Just not my bag. 5/10 2 stars.
The King definitely gets right to work on this one. I never really got into Elvis. Can't deny his music has stood the test of time and persists into contemporary culture. That being said, this stuff is corny. Once in a while a song hits with me like Viva Las Vegas, That's Alright, Suspicious Minds, and in the case of this album, Fever. But everything else is meh for me.
Rock and roll changed a LOT in even the 10 years after this album came out Can't say this is doing much for me, really. It's a bunch of oldies pop songs that has more in common with soul and R&B than it does rock music nowadays. None of these are even the Elvis songs I recognize. This bluesier songs are the best ones here.
voice like butter - songs pretty naff. good version of fever though and such a night good fun.
Seems almost like a throwaway album the studio put out as an afterthought. Some of the melodies are catchy, but most songs just exist for two minutes and peter out into nothing almost as if Elvis gave up trying to find a suitable ending and just left the stage. Goes without saying this isn't a wholly memorable project.
More or less what you'd expect from an Elvis album. The cover of Fever is worth a listen though.
Fine. 5/10
I'm not an Elvis fan, and this is worse than I expected. It's really slow, and doesn't really "rock" the way I thought Elvis did. He can sing, I'll give him that, but he just doesn't do anything for me.
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Dirty, Dirty Feeling Cutting Edge: Fever Overall Notes: Not as fun as the Elvis Presley album. Just aight.
Feels very familiar, ordinary and boring. It's not bad at all, just not surprising.
Nothing particularly exciting
Kompetent musik. Kanske inte jättekittlande längre
Förlåt men det är så jävla trist
Fine for its time, I guess.
Dated
I honestly can't see why this guy was such a big deal. Maybe you just had to be there, because to me it's just some boring crooning.
Not my piece of cake Fever is Great though!
The rendition of Fever on this album made me feel embarrassed while I was sitting alone, listening to it. The musicianship is great throughout, but this was not for me.
Kind of felt like Mehlvis to me. Nothing really jumped out, alas. I assume we’ll be getting more so hopefully something else will pop. Elvis has always been someone I’ve wanted to appreciate more than I have to date. Where’s the shit with him singing pseudo-Hawaiian beachy stuff? That’s what I’m here for.
Fairly good songs, and I like the country elements, but not quite as entertaining as some other Elvis material.
I like Elvis' music, but I think he's more of a singles guy... I preferred the mix of styles on this one to the debut but it's another 2.5.
Such a Night was a song I enjoyed despite never having heard it before. I probably won't listen this is ever again though
I hate to rate this how I did because it's a great album, but it also feels... tired. The album being the first recorded after his military service makes sense.
Great for it's time, but not great for our time. Hard to rate as it's kind of campy and shallow, but would not have seemed so in 1960 when it came out. More of a gateway to the next generation than part of it. Only a few years later, the rules were completely rewritten by bands like the Beatles, Stones, Who that led to music that still holds up 60 years later. This does not. Elvis' voice and singing is very good for what the music allows, but not much is allowed.
I'm not really an Elvis fan and this album didn't change that even after multiple listens. The band and Elvis sounded good, but the songs were kind of bland. The two tracks that stood out for me were It Feels So Right and The Girl Next Door Went a'Walking.
After returning from military service, Elvis's sound & voice had matured to try different genres of songs on this album - his fourth. The album consists of rock, pop, & blues music with Elvis improving his vocal range as well. This album was one of the first with stereophonic sound, and the new technology was well used by Elvis. I don't really like jamming out to Elvis and the critics of this album didn't like it when it came out, but it was an evolution in Elvis' career and an important piece of music history.
It's more Elvis. That said, I have no idea why this album was chosen. It doesn't contain any of his big hits and is all-round really forgettable.
*shrug* is ok. 2 stars? Didn't really wow me.
I think I'm realizing that I really just don't like Elvis as much as I thought. Like he's good yeah, but...
Duck boy elvis
Not bad, not great
I think Fever is the only song I explicitly knew beforehand. I kind of like that the album is short, which is not a good sign...
It’s fine, R&B ballads.
Not sure why but I find zero pleasure listening to this.
Not a huge Elvis guy but the first song was fun.
Fever, The girl of my best friend Un peu layant à la longue mais quel génie quand même
Was ok - Fever is a classic, couple of other notables
_Elvis is Back_, but he just came by for his hat. This album had some pretty raunchy songs, but nothing that stood out. No Devils in Blue Suede Jailhouses, Hounddogs. _Fever_ was _creepy_, like something a serial killer would mutter before doing serial killer things, like helping their neighbors with the trash or appearing otherwise normal
I can't help but have visions of Elvis movies going through my brain when I hear these songs. Elvis is great, but I would not add this to my collection.
I don't like elvis. this didn't change anything.
like listening to old radio
Did he ever leave?
The cat liked it...
I can't stand this man or his music. I just don't get it, sorry.
Erityisesti vauhdikkaammat biisit kuulostavat todella kulahtaneilta.
Neat but not really that nostalgic over Elivs
Not as traumatic as I anticipated, I'm not a fan. This is Elvis all laid back and chilled out, there's not much of the over the top histrionics that his performances often contain. I really quite enjoyed the first half of the album, but then things started to get a bit samey.
respect from the influence but come on shit its boring asf
I mean Elvis is Elvis, I didn't expect it to be super different, it was still enjoyable but not a album I would put on to chill to on purpose.
A: Grundaren av fuckboyismen. 1/5
Elvis was a hero to most, but he never meant shit to me...
Gjorde ikke noget for mig
Eh
I get that he is the Godfather of Rock and Roll and I get why he was an icon and loved by all but this era of R&R does not do anything for me, it’s too far removed from anything I can relate to. Yes, if before this you were listening to Artie Shaw and Bing Cosby then fair enough it probably sounded exciting but 70 years down the line it sounds basic, boring and repetitive. 1.3
I did not care for Elvis, he lowkengenuinely sucks
I saw a vintage badge yesterday that said ‘I hate Elvis’ and I thought that’s crazy who hates Elvis? But then I was faced with this album, and the only song I was familiar with was the droning cover of ‘Fever’ and suddenly I thought, maybe I hate Elvis? TBD.
Elvis was a hero to most / But he never meant shit to me, you see / Straight-out racist, that sucker was / Simple and plain / Motherf*** him and John Wayne
Nossa, as músicas desse homem não descem pra mim... acho tudo igual! Minto, tem as lentas (todas iguais) e as animadinhas (todas iguais). E todas igualmente forçadas e cansativas em 2026.
Goofy, candy coloured, Disneyfied rock n music. The King has no clothes.
Still don't get Elvis, this album didn't change anything. Gyrating hips might represent a step change in how 'rock' stars were marketed and perceived but that doesn't make a bunch of standards written by someone else and sung badly an essential listen. I guess it could be essential in the context that this is after coming back from Vietnam but apart from some nods to coming home and soldiers it doesn't really affect the material. Not for me and I've listened to enough now that I can say with certainly it never will be.
Elvis Costello is the superior Elvis. This wasn't a lot of fun - pretty dreary, boring production. I guess not being a teenage girl in the early 60s clouds my perception, but what is there to go wild about? Some slightly maudlin doo-wop stuff? His version of Fever is perfectly serviceable, he has a distinctive voice. Loads of hits, just none on the album.
Elvis does nothing for me really. I suppose some of the biggest hits might, but none of them are here. I don't need his crooning. It's super dated too. Fever was probably the best, but it's not his song.... Not that he wrote any of them anyway I would assume. Not the king for me. 1
I tried to give him another chance on this one, but oh my God is this bad. It's all the worst tendencies and tropes of early rock 'n' roll mashed together with a mumbling, stuttering vocal performance. It's difficult to conceive how this was ever popular. 0.5/5.0: Unlistenable
this was a chore to listen to. there may have been one listenable track on this entire album
I dunno dude. It felt like I was in the 50s and I wasn't in the mood. I just wannae interested in it.
nope not listening to this
https://www.reddit.com/r/gameofthrones/comments/1itjl3h/fuck_the_king/
Awful! Why did my mom every like him?
Racism aside, Elvis made some good songs. None of them are on this album.
Elvis came back with a soulless effort.
He might’ve been back, not sure from where though😂 nice little “pop” album- but nothing special here ( for me that is).
# 217/1001. Let's play the Elvis is back -game. The rules are: one person says a line starting with Elvis is dead...filling the sentence with some Elvish. And the other person answers with a line that beats or rhymes or in other way complements, contradicts or completes the first sentence. Here is an imaginary gameplay: Elvis is back from the army From the war From teenage girls' bed From the dead From Sun From the moon From the 50s From Vegas From an OD trip From a trip with a VD With a fever With a fiver For the disappointment of moms and dads For the disappointment of 50 million fans Softer than ever Harder than Jello From Germany As a nazi In white leather In a gold sweater More boring than ever Singing even fever The king is dead Long live the king
Unlistenable cack
He shouldn't have bothered. This is just a huge pile of steaming keech! I've heard others doing many of these songs. In every case these were FAR better than Elvis. His vocals are awful, particularly on Fever. An insult to the entire American people.
1/10 Send him back. Fucking Elvis. The vinyl they used to press this record could have been the siding on a slaughterhouse. boring. Fever is a great song and he just drones it like his quaaludes just kicked in. sounds like he has an actual fever and is sipping soup while singing. What the fuck, why this guy? 10-16-2025
yeah i dont see why americans are obsessed with him
2/10 - boring honky tonk music, every song the same as the others, honestly never understood the hype or obsession with Elvis
Elvis Schmelvis! Boring!
I get why black people are mad at Elvis
I asked an AI thingy how many rock/pop albums had been released since 1958. Its conservative estimate was 3-5 million, its more inclusive estimate was 8-12 million. So quite what this dross is doing on a list of 1001 ‘must-hear’ records is beyond me.
The King becomes a Queen! Somehow the king of rockabilly morphs into a crooning easy listener. Tragic.
Elvis sucks. That is all. That’s the review.
Appreciate the voice, appreciate the talent. Just not my thing.
1960 OMG 😨 Elvis is back… in 1960?! This album is too old to be considered. Unlistenable.
Honestly, awful boring not what I expected out of an Elvis Presley album at least there could’ve been one good song. There wasn’t even one good song.
Never been an Elvis fan. I've listened to his music and just can't get into it.
I couldn’t wait for this album to be over. The entire piece just feels like a challenge to record the same song as many times as possible. As soon as one song about being hopped up about a girl ends, it’s immediately restarts. The one relatively unique song, ‘fever’, is a cover and therefore can’t earn an additional star. The cultural impact of Elvis is undeniable, but from a pure listening experience, I’ve had few worse.
