The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Mr and Mrs. Education. That’s all I got for this intro. Can’t all be winners. Let’s see if this album can break away from our foray into Nick’s horrid Cave yesterday. Oh buddy we’re rappin’ big time. Pretty good. I don’t need the melodic chorus. Unless it’s a sample, that often ruins rap for me. Good beat, fun flow, aggressive delivery, only hampered by a reliance on a lame chorus and overstaying its welcome. This song has a good beat. Good underlying rhythm, but man is this ever not for me. The overdone vocals are bleh. I can’t do the late 90’s/early 2000’s R & B sound. The breakdown close to halfway through the track saves it. Get out of that register. THEEEE JOOOOYYYYYYY. Not good. Not for me and also not good. I’m doublin’ down. Lots of leaving the G off today. I’m enough “G” for the whole review I suppose (I am not a G). I am however, a hater of rap interludes. These barely audible talking segments are death. That thing. This song is very popular, is it not? 514 million plays. Good lord. It’s fine. More rap, which I find works better. She has an excellent delivery, but I don’t care for the melodic aspects of this. “Hip hop started out in the heart and now everybody is trying to chart.” Proceeds to do a primordial Destiny’s Child song. While Alanis has a weak grasp of irony, I’m sure even she could pick this one up. Again, the rap portions are excellent. The rest is bunk. Here we go. The flute beat, the menacing delivery. HEEEEELLLLL YEAH. Finally. Israel?? Problematic. Palestine also mentioned. Way to go Lauryn. This thing rips. More bad R & B. It’s up there with reggae and vocal jazz for genres I can’t abide. It’s so reminiscent of the early 2000’s. It brings to mind big dumb skate shoes, baggy jeans and those music videos that look like they were shot on the inside of a cheese grater. Not MY nostalgia. Big thanks to Lauryn for breaking breakup songs down to their core essence. I used to love him, and now I don’t. Easy to follow although near impossible to sit through. This is starting to really drag. This song reminds me of trying to sleep with a stomach flu. So very tired, but being roused by constant pain and waves of nausea. Oh sweet Jesus. Was this song in Shark Tale? The phrase “not for me,” continues to bubble to my fingertips. We’re at a boil now. Man. More R & B eh? American Idol vocal runs accompanied by dumb snaps and a feature from the imperious D’Angelo. Isn’t that the guy from season 1 of the Wire? Well, based on this performance, I’m hoping I never hear anything ever again from this guy either. WHY IS THIS ALSO 6 MINUTES??? The phrase “masturbatory” might apply to much of this. Certainly fits like a glove on this terrible cut. Rap portions were good. Rest of the song sounds like the backing for an uplifting montage in a Lindsay Lohan movie. It’s time to shut it down. Let’s get out of here. Wrap it up. Lauryn is vocal running past the go home light. And we’ve arrived. That could have been shaved by 30 minutes. One album of songs and one album of outros and vocal runs for the real “sophisticated music listener.” I think some albums are released for the artist, and some are released to be well received. Consideration of audience is the death of art, and despite the personal title and the frequent third person referral, this album reeked of an outward cry for validation. I think the rapping was fantastic and filled with menace, purpose, and a deft touch, while the singing and features turn this thing into a bloated American Idol audition compilation tape. One of the most overrated albums of all time

Liked this way less than I thought I would. Tell Him is an all time classic though! Don’t much like the rest.

I guess you had to be there. Wait, I WAS there! But I guess you had to be there and care about the Fugees and Lauryn Hill, which I didn't at all. This is isn't bad, in fact she has a nice voice and she does that neo-soul thing pretty well. But musically it starts to blend together preally fast, and the album is REALLY long so I lost interest after a few songs.

I just can't stand this kind of early Century soul/hip-hop. Good for her though.

For some reason there are only 3 songs with legit melodies. Also, for some other reason, about 85% of the lyrics on this album are echoed. This is not as good as I was hoping it was going to be. Extra star for a popular music star making an album that is very different than what was commercial at that time.

That thing is a classic ear worm, although I love to substitute Bad for That - I think it has more oomph. I don’t like her cover of Too good to be true and the rest of the songs fade into obscurity. I remember when the album came out and there was such an outpouring of admiration and love for it. I didn’t get it then, I don’t get it now. I quite like the punctuating speech fillers. It reminds me of watching one of those classic 80s films where teachers inspire poor kids. But mostly it’s Bad Thing Bad Thing Bad Thi-i-i-ng!

Pretty nice sounding music, however it can be a bit repetitive and samey at times. It does feel very long and does feel like it overstays its welcome.

One of those highly regarded albums I've never listened. to. And now that I have, I never will again. Do not understand the hype - there is some nice music underneath some of the rantings and wailings, but nothing special.

2/5 Great artist, really good musically, just not my taste.

My expectations for this album were pretty high, so maybe this is my fault. I think if every song (I mean it, all of them) were at least a minute shorter, this would be more digestible and thus easier to appreciate and enjoy. She's got a great voice and this record is produced well, but it's too bloated for me; it gives me too much time to notice things I don't like. It doesn't help that most of the songs are paced similarly and some of the top line melodies are indistinguishable. I guess I'll have to listen again another day. Highlights: Doo Wop (That Thing), Everything Is Everything, Can't Take My Eyes Off of You - (I Love You Baby)

I enjoyed the songs where she sings (she has a good voice) but the rap and hip-hop did nothing for me. I'm neutral on the reggae flavored cuts. Overall, just an okay listen for me. Kind of overrated. And way too long.

Couple of good singles (Lost Ones, Doo Wop) but the overall album is more disappointing that I remember. But a great opportunity to mention my favorite Lauryn Hill lines...(from the Fugees song "Zealots") “And even after all my logic and my theory, I add a “motherf*cker” so you ignant n*ggas hear me"

Hab überlegt drei Sterne zu geben, weil ich glaube wenn man Lust drauf hat macht das Album Spaß. Die Lieder aber mal einzeln zu hören ist schwierig, weil am Ende vieler Lieder Dialoge zwischen Lehrer und Schüler drangehängt wurden.

Still in search of the rap album I enjoy. There was promise a couple of times, but it didn't really grab me.

Middle-of-the-road pop-flavored R&B, with grace notes of hip-hop and Caribbean stylings. I’ve never understood why this album is so popular: some of the singles really bang, but the rest is interminably long, the interstitials are irritating, and the lyrics offer little except, I don’t know, don’t trust people? She has a lovely voice and a creepy attitude.

I will never, ever, understand why this is rated so highly that Lauryn can still tour, and be a diva, on the back of it. A few good tracks, but so much uninspired filler. It's not that this is badly produced or performed, but it's just not for me. I was bored for an hour.

To be fair, this is not my genre of music. However, a few of the tracks in the non rap genre were worth listening to. Nice voice. One tune worth mentioning is 'Can't Take my Eyes off of You'.

Is it finished yet? Lauryn Hill has an absolutely amazing voice: beautiful golden, velvet. But every song is like being beaten senseless by that voice. Individually, each song is great but the cumulative effect is, to me, unlistenable en masse. From about four songs in I was counting the number of tracks remaining. It decreased very slowly.

Pretty boring and repetitive but still better than the shit they make today

It's fine. I know this tries to be a huge statement and such, but for me it falls flat. There's not a ton of cohesion in the tracks, and the talky bits at the end of most tracks feel like they try to reveal some grand truth, but it's just spewing tired cliché after tired cliché. Maybe you should have been there when it was made? Maybe that's what makes it great? Standouts - 2/5

My wife has a theory that the Fugees ruined pop music. They took everything and slowed it down with generic "beats" and wailing. She's onto something with this bland procession of blah.

Her voice is a decent instrument. I found myself getting bored and checking how much was left. The singles hold up but most of the tracks are very forgettable.

1001 Albums Day 4 The first album in this challenge that's in a genre I don't really listen to, being soul and R&B with slight elements of Conscious Rap, now that latter I can take, but the former two have never really appealed. I tend to find songs a bit slow, and mature in all the ways that makes me disengage from the art, feeling like artificially extended, idle musings on life with the gravitas of having something grander to say that it actually does. Maybe one day I'll get it, but that day is not today. Even on her first release Lauryn's songs are quite long-winded, which is a personal pet peeve of mine. I feel that all songs have a length that they deserve to be, and for most songs that is shorter than they are, and that is definitely true on this album, with most songs being around the 6-minute mark, while having enough material for about 4:30, being extended with beautiful - but in my opinion unnecessary - repetition. A song that really suffers from this is Final Hour, with the final 1:30-2:00 being the chorus repeated ad nauseum and then just the instrumental just playing over and over, doing nothing. BREAKING NEWS: The skit virus has infected The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. You can have skits that's fine, but I am a serial playlister, so having them at the ends of songs instead of as separate tracks basically guarantees that I won't return to these songs. Now, positives, Doo Wop (That Thing) is where things really click for me, the soul and R&B makes the song smooth and pleasant, while the rap elements lend a kinetic energy, that I feel is somewhat missing from other tracks, and maybe a bit too present on Lost Ones, to the point of being almost aggressive. Forgive Them Father is another highlight for me, with a good hook and and interesting harmony that sort of "rubs" against the main vocal, it's not quite dissonance but functions in a similar way, and sonically it introduces more Reggae elements giving the song its own distinct flavour. However, as I was listening to the song I kept thinking, "Please don't have a skit, I really wanna save this" it ended, and I had already added it to my good music playlist before I noticed that there was still 45 seconds left, DAMN YOU SKIIIIIIIIIIITS!!! Now, I am aware that this is a sacred cow, and that I am likely to be raked over the coals if anyone notices this review, so I just want to state that my dislike is purely down to not getting the genre, I am genuinely sure that if this genre hits for you, few things are as good as this album, and I fully respect that, I simply ask that you extend the same favour to me. I believe that no amazing album can be for everyone, and that if you like all music, even all music that is generally considered masterworks, you aren't engaging deeply enough with the medium or the music itself, it takes all kinds and all that. Beyond that, I don't know what to say, this is not my genre and listening to what many consider to be the prime example of the genre in more modern times has not convinced me otherwise, so I don't think I'm gonna convert any time soon. I honestly feel like a poser even just listening to this album. Though if I ever do get the album, I'll be sure to re-do this review. Just couldn't get into it

Man, I didn't like this in High school and I didnt dig it this time around either. IT has the hits and D'angelo kills his feature but I'm not going to put this into rotation anytime soon.

Já havia dito que acho o RAP um som extremamente "de nicho", pois exige uma compreensão profunda do contexto e da língua, pois há rima e fala rápida, diferentemente dos outros estilos. Apesar de achar o album da lauryn um dos poucos audíveis no ambiente do rap, continuo a achar essa dificuldade incômoda. Mas, é bem mais melodioso e agradável que a maioria dos álbuns de rap e rythm and blues. Mas longe de ser número um de alguma lista pra mim. Parece ter uma história muito interessante por trás, com o negócio da escola e tal....

I never understood why The Fugees and Lauren Hill were admired so much back in the 90's. It's all a bit tedious and up it's own arse with all the made up school recordings in between songs. The only song I actually liked by her is 'Everything is Everything' probably because it is a halfway decent R&B song in the style of TLC. The rest veers between hip hop, gospel and Blues. On occasion when she wants to, she shows she can sing, but not for me. 1.5 to 2 stars.

Meh, not for me...I'm not the hip.I like some of the songs, there were parts that reminded of 70s soul that I was getting into, but I have never been into that rhythmic grunting into the mic and this album is full of that. Yo. uh. yo.

Sigh...a legendary album that I just cannot get myself to find anything besides boring. I'm so sorry everybody. R&B just sounds like elevator music to me

It was alright

Honestly: this was an album that I wanted to rate higher based on a few select songs and it's reputation. But upon listening to it for the first time all the way through in order it did not resonate with me. It came through as very staccato-esque to me and not "smooth." A surprise to me that it was not as strong as I would have thought coming into it.

Ok. I see now why it is so highly regarded, but it is not what I like. That’s all. Others who understand and love this genre know better than I do and will rate this album high, perhaps deservedly so.

Some of the songs on this album that are more soul and less hip hop aren't terrible. I hate hip hop, it just does nothing for me at all. She's got a great singing voice and I wish this album had been more of that. The more reggae sounding songs were cool too. It's just ruined with the rap that sort of takes over. And what's with the skits? Like how did that become a staple on hip hop albums from this time? It's weird and takes you out of the album. 2/5

Better than yesterday for sure

Inoffensive but dull. WNLA. Spotify decided to play Can I Kick It by Tribe Called Quest after the album finished which woke me up a bit.

One of those where you need to have a real interest in the genre. The big songs are bangers, and forever will be, is just the other 45minutes is good but long.

The album was a total let-down given it's title as 'One Of The Greatest' of all-time. There was no actual substance in the album. I'm not a fan of hip hop in the first place, and although she was spitting bars, Ms. Hill put zero effort in the actual melody.

Lauryn Hill is a great singer and rapper, after the first song I had really high hopes. Most of the album from then on was quite dull, no more rapping and straightforward music. No excuse for it being as long as it was either, if the runtime is already over an hour maybe don't bother with the cover of can't take my eyes off of you. Her voice does keep it from being a complete disaster, there were a good number of parts I enjoyed. Feel like it could have been so much better though, wouldn't listen again. 2.5 but closer to a 2.

Can appreciate that it is good. Dislike the chatty bits between songs, seems indulgent. To Zion is a very, very good song, but overall just not my cup of tea. Sorry love.

I've listened to this album before on a list of the top 100 albums of all time.... I think this falls into the category of I can appreciate that it's good, it's just not for me. R&B and soul are not my thing. Would never choose to listen to this, but I can appreciate it's a good example of this kind of thing!

I've listened twice and a half. There is depth here. Striking depth. My background is not black, female and American, but i still get themes here - themes that hold injustice and insufficient opportunity. The message is complex and really well delivered. Music elements are engaging, like really engaging..the classroom queries on what Love means, what it is, all that is really good spacing of the pieces, the pieces themselves, it's quite good. It still requires more concentration from me. It's among the more approachable pieces of rap and rhythm I've encountered. I do think it would be worthwhile pursuing more. More listening required. I don't quite know about the musical composition though, I heard the vocals strongly - they are powerful - possibly compelling with all the elements there. High 2 stars for me, but not three. Not yet anyway. It might rise to a 4.. but more time needs to pass before I can say that. It's the first time I've listened to her whole album, and for that, it's a good discovery. Takeaway - listen to the whole before making up your mind. Like, LISTEN.

She has a good voice and range but I didn't listen to the Rap style songs. So I'd only like about 1/2 the songs she sang.

Nicht mein Fall - ok aber nicht gut.

- Das Album taucht in jeder Topliste Immer relativ weit oben auf, auf meiner eigenen Topliste leider nicht - Ich kannte zwei Songs, der Rest war mir gänzlich unbekannt - Ich finds nicht schlecht, ist wiedermal gut gemachter R&B und Lauryn Hill ist durch den Wechsel zwischen Gesang und Rap auch sehr variabel. - Leider kann ich abseits dessen noch nicht komplett nachvollziehen, was das Album jetzt von jedem anderen 2000er R&B Album unterscheidet - Was irgendwie cool ist und ich mir erstaunlich gern gehört habe, sind die Skits, die scheinbar in einem Klassenraum aufgenommen wurden und immer wieder am Ende einiger Songs eingestreut werden. Es handelt sich um ein langes authentisches Gespräch zwischen dem Lehrer und der Klasse über das Thema Liebe. - Insgesamt cool und gut gemacht, aber einfach nicht so mein Geschmack. Rating: 2,5/5

It was ok

Man is this ever overrated. I do like Doo-Wop but I expected better. I remember everyone fawning over this album when I was a kid. She was easily the highlight of The Fugees but this didn't excite me much at all aside from a song that I've heard many, many times over the years. The big hit was a big hit for a reason but overall I'm baffled as to why this was so special.

started out solid, better then expected. But by the end (last 3 or so songs) it was nails on a chalkboard.

Hay géneros que son de una época y en la segunda mitad de la década de los 90 apareció una forma de rap que es de ese tiempo. Un sonido que escuchado ahora suena raro. Eso es lo que le ocurre a este disco. Salió como un producto para ser vendido, así que tenía que llegar a mucha gente y se ha quedado en un producto que ahora no acaba de funcionar. Y es una lástima, porque Hill tiene una voz maravillosa que usa muy bien. Tiene una interpretación extraordinaria y, supongo, de no haber tenido que compartir listas con Whitney Houston hubiese sido una gran cantante de soul. Un disco totalmente prescindible.

I like Lauryn Hill but the album is still average..

My son assures me this is a major, classic hip-hop album. I had never heard it before, yes I guess I’m a troglodyte, so I was expecting something special. Even though it’s not my favourite type of music, I can still appreciate work well done. This just doesn’t come close at living up to the hype for me at all. Very disappointing really. It just didn’t connect with me one iota.

I have said it before and I will say it again you don't need an into into your album, you just need to start it with a bannger. Also why does it have speaking parts from some bloke it breaks up the music and flow. Havent got to the end of the first proper track and already pissed off with this album. WHY IS THERE PEOPLE TALKING AT THE END OF THE TRACKS!!!  It's unnecessary and a waste of everybodys time. Its like they have forgot to stop recording after each song. When Lauryn actually sings its not too bad, unfortunately that is too infrequent. Overall I would have wanted to rate this higher, but I can't because of the constant talking at the end of tracks.  The track lengths were fat to long, this album could have been done in 2/3 of the time if it wasn't for all the messing about. Won't go back and listen again. Maybe she should get some education on how to do an album properly or find a decent producer who knows when to cut off a track .

The album was ok. I don't think it's as ground breaking as everyone claims but that may be from the perspective of looking back from present to when this was released. As with a lot of hip hop albums of the time, there were a bit too many skit interludes for my taste. Everything I've read about Lauryn Hill as a person has been pretty negative and I'm again trying to separate the art from the artist. That said, she's clearly talented but Wyclef and Pras did their fair share of the heavy lifting in the Fugees to make that album special. That seems to be somewhat missing on this album. uh uh, oh yeah. I'm sure it's fine if you like rap/hip-hop. Not for me.

I've never been a big fan of R&B and this album didn't change that. I think there's a lot of talent in this album, and I can definitely understand why it was/is so loved... it's just not my taste. I was familiar with "Doo Wop (That Thing)" because it was on Much Dance 2000 and I do like that song. I had a hard time listening to this impartially as I recently learned Lauryn Hill is pretty shitty to her fans; cancels shows last minute, comes on stage late and only performs briefly. Blegh. I feel a bit guilty giving this a low score but I personally didn't enjoy it.

Nice Hip-hop beats, I'm not really a fan of this style of music but I've listened to some of the more famous guys, I liked some songs, but nothing to special for me, if you stop and think about the time frame it's really remarkable that a female singer could grow to fame in the heavily dominated scene by men The songs feel impactful and the lyrics carry a message, but not my style, I'll grade it according to importance and relevance to the hip-hop scene and not just my style of songs,

1. Gosto de álbums conceituais, que tem uma intro pro álbum, tem um tema, achei que viria algo foda... 2. Mas aí fiquei meio "tá... pode crer.". Não é meu gosto, mas a voz dela é boa, a galera que curte o estilo deve gostar mesmo. Refrão com harmonia bonita de vozes. 3. Parece muito uma música de filme que se passa em Los Angeles. Uma cena mostrando a cidade, andando de carro. 4. Pronto, vai começar a parecer tudo igual agora. E a vontade de só ouvir a primeira estrofe, ir até o refrão e pular? kkkk 5. Chegou a música mais famosa. Não deu vontade de pular. Música bem feita, voz boa. 6~16. É foda, cansou, tudo mesma coisa pra mim. A música com o mesmo título do álbum é uma das menos ouvidas... Como isso? hahhuauhauha. Será que ela pensou "essa vai ser o hit, a galera vai amar, vai ser A música do álbum..." A penúltima é muito conhecida, mas nem é dela. Mas ficou muito boa na voz dela. Foda, por mais que seja repetitivo, álbum é de 1998, talvez tenha criado uns padrões na indústria pop que ouvimos hoje, mas vai saberis. É de boa de ouvir, mas nada me chamou atenção. Música boa, mas por ser um estilo que não ouço, não teve um "wow".

#17. I never really listened to Lauryn Hill before. Honestly I thought she made poppy r&b type shit, but as it turns out she was a rapper this whole time. Who knew? All I know is that this album is boring. This was one of the legendary albums thst I’ve heard about for so many years that it could never live up to the hype. And it didn’t. Lyrically it was excellent but musically I found my attention drifting.

As an album with such a MASSIVE reputation I was a bit disappointed by it. Love, love, love the X factor, and Doo Wop but outside of that I got a little bored. Maybe the straighter rap stuff just isn’t my thing (the between song skits really aren’t)

I didn't enjoy this. Lauryn Hill has a pretty intense vocal talent, but this album just didn't come together. I remember hearing about it and how it was critically acclaimed in all of that, but this absolutely didn't do it for me.

The "neo-soul" parts of this album were quite passable, although not particularly engaging. On the other hand, I skipped the hip-hop tracks halfway through. Definitely not the worst out there, but I don't like the style and the tracks sounded so repetitive within themselves - if you listen to 10 seconds of it, you've basically heard the whole song. I can see some people liking it and I don't fault them for it. But for me it's a pass.

This record made me take an absence from this project which lasted nearly a year. While there were rhythms, beats, and box I definitely enjoyed, this one just left me a little flat for some reason. There’re hints of a narrative and melodic thread here, but it’s not strong enough to tie together an absolutely stuffed LP that doesn’t have much exciting to say.

Enjoyable but didn't really hit hard for me

Probably the only RNB album I like. I don't like it much, particularly when she takes you to church and gets into the praise Jesus vibes, but I have to stay a real standout in the genre.

Don't you mean "Ms. Lauryn HIll" ... ? Though I didn't try to listen to it until today, this never resonated with me... and unfortunately, still doesn't. I think for its time, this was considered phenomenal. Today it just sounds kinda old.

I’ll have to thank The Fugees for setting the bar too high, my expectations were destined to be unmet. I found this to be bland and boring, and pretty repetitive throughout. I listened to this one 3 times bc I couldn’t believe I didn’t like it, but I’ve accepted it now and I’m ready to finally review. Ex-Factor, To Zion, and I Used To Love Him are the only songs I liked.

She has a good voice but I don't like this style of music, especially the more rap-heavy parts where not my cup of tea.

Much better Neo-Soul/R&B than some of the other albums on here. Hill can perform a range of styles successfully. She doesn't overly rely on gimmicks and warbling over the top vocals (though they are present natch) she remembers to include some choruses you can actually recognise a melody in. The god-bothering can be grating but the real issue here are the fucking pointless skits. There's a good album here getting buried by these naval gazing excerpts from a "classroom". It was a long listen that's for sure. But as someone who is generally not really a hiphop/r&b enjoyer, this was surprisingly 'not that bad'. Still way to long with all the songs blending into one another. This makes the album excessively boring. I would say this is fine for one or two songs, but the whole album is a big no no.

Did not enjoy as much as Wyclef Jean's solo album.

It was OK. Some groovy bits but mostly benign.

A blend of hip-hop, soul and R&B makes an enjoyable listen to most people, though I am not entirely convinced by the concept's strength, Lauryn's (at times) annoying vocals, or the slightly overdone repetition on some tracks. Hip-hop is not my favorite, though I find enough grit, edge and depth in other artists' discographies. In some cases, I had the feeling song length was an issue as well, especially in "Lost Ones" "To Zion" and "When it Hurts". When "Nothing even Matters" with D'Angelo came on, the cheese was almost too much to handle, and when the Four Seasons cover came on, I was happy to almost be done with this. A 2/5 for creativity, but barely.

With all the skits (so many of them) it reminded me of a social realist film using real, improvising actors. But one where the director has got too wrapped up in "the magic" once it comes to editing and refuses to cut whole swathes flab. So there are good moments - terrific beats, great rapping - balanced by utterly forgettable or painful moments. As far as social realism goes, yeah okay, that's life. But it's not always entertaining and I strongly doubt it's intentional.

this album was highly recieved back in the day, probably because the world was awash with slow jamz and R'n'B was king of the world. so weird to hear her singing about love and being soppy knowing how much of an angry woman she is. its also worth noting that at the time this was viewed as a step forward for women in the urban music game - so in its own way this paved the way for WAP, thanks Laryn. i skipped about 50% of this album but there is the odd nice hip hop track hidden in between the 90s amy winehouse crap. loses points because of the new variation of the rap album skit, i'd rather hear her talking to her mates about how she is the master of shagging than kids talking about love.

Unfortunately, R&B/rap where almost every song is over 5 minutes long is not my thing. There's only so much Fergie-singing-the-National-Anthem-ing I can take before I tune out the lyrics, even if those lyrics are really good. Was close to giving it a three, but I was kinda bored listening to a lot of these songs. I'm sure that if I ever grow to like R&B I'll look back and laugh at what an idiot I was for giving this album a 2, but that's where I am right now.

I'm going to base this rating almost entirely on the only song of hers that I had heard before this album. The song "Selah" from the Ya-Ya Sisterhood soundtrack. The song sucks and goes on for-f*ing-ever. After about two minutes I realized that sings the same for notes of the same scale over and over. It's a bit maddening that she then went on and did and entire album of it.

Oh no. This isn't my kind of music at all. I still don't like her because the Fugees took the number one spot from Three Lions back in the day. A real slog this one, not helped by heavy weather outside today.

Do the people who chose these 1001+ albums realise that there are other countries besides those where English is spoken? She has a good voice. Repetitive backing vocals, with all the "yo yo", "yeah yeah", "ah ah", "ya ya" etc. The cover image has a good idea, but is executed poorly (especially the font used for the title). 1.5 / 5

I quite like some of The Fugees tracks so was interested to hear this. Hasn’t grabbed me initially though, but only part way through my first play through. That said, I’ve already fast forwarded a couple of tracks so it’s not sounding overly promising… Going into this I really hoped I’d enjoy it, but sadly I haven’t. Uh huh, huh, yeah, yo, etc etc. This sort of stuff just gets on my wick. I don't feel qualified to judge it on merit, only that it doesn't do anything for me.

When I listened to Lauryn Hill’s album, I found it unbelievably bad. On the first play it got under my skin so much that I almost quit, but I forced myself to listen again. The second time was slightly less awful, maybe because I was distracted. Still, the whole album feels like one long low point. “Superstar” stood out negatively, and the cover of Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You was, in my view, ruined beyond belief. The only track that made me pause was Final Hour, because it has a flute that actually sounds musical. Carlos Santana also plays a short acoustic guitar part, but it gets buried in the rest. I simply can’t connect with this modern version of R&B at all. Sorry.

I was encouraged by the intro track with the school teacher-ish reading of names. Lauryn Hill was missing. Imagine my disappointment when she turned up on the very next track! The tracks are not a screaming horror show as some offerings on 1001, but none were ticking boxes. Its a no from me. NO! About 1 hour 16 minutes too long. No, changed my mind, 1h 17mins too long.

This isn’t something that was made for me, nor do I particularly want to hear it again. I understand why it’s critically acclaimed, but my tastes in hip hop do not lead me to come anywhere close to enjoying this album. The flow, timbre, and general vocal style does nothing for me. I’m not at all upset about the instrumentation and production value, musically it’s very good for what it is, but the vocals kill the record for me. It was a slog to get through this and I’m glad it’s over.

Honestly, this album is really nice to the ear, but it feels more like an exploration of samples over someone rapping. Lauryn Hill sings like no other but her music isn't my kinda thing, even a song she had with Carlos Santana (which is one of my favorites musicians) felt underutilized. I expected more, but I guess her music isn't for me at all

Overall, didn't really like it. There were a few cuts like Superstar, Final Hour, and that Frankie Valli cover that I enjoyed but overall the record mostly missed me. I'm just not into R&B and overall, the immense length of the record and the sheer amount of 5+ minute long songs is just a nonstarter for me. The concept is cool and learning about Ms Lauryn Hill's inspirations behind the album helped contextualize it overall but I can't say this is one I'll be excited to revisit outside of a few tracks that appear to be on the less-beloved part of this classic-but-not-for-me record.

Closing track ("Tell Him") goes really hard, and "Nothing Even Matters" too. I Knew "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" before, great too. Also I like the discussions separate from the songs, a nice touch Still, this rap album isn't as much my thing. There *is* certain rap I really like though, like Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by OutKast (it also has discussions separate from songs, which are done very well there)

I'm interested in giving this one a listen. Ever since I sat through the Fugee's second album I've seen this album everywhere and have heard about how great and influential Lauryn Hill is despite only having three albums to her name. Listened to it and yeah, not a fan. I can understand where this album innovated if Lauryn Hill was one of the first people to popularise the "being shaken" style of singing, but that kind of vocal performance sounds like utter shit to me. It's an impressive display of vocal range and prowess, but I firmly believe that it belongs to the "for record producers only" category. Every song being sung in this style combined with the minimal instrumentals, lack of breathing room and hour seventeen runtime made this album a profoundly miserable listening experience for me. I wasn't compelled to listen to the lyrics too closely, but they all came across as pretty insipid and self-aggrandising to me. Which beckons the question. Why this is considered a concept album? There isn't really an arc to any of the discussed themes, and what is discussed falls vaguely within the realm of self-love or something. The entire experience is fruitless to me.

First Album I’m rating. I’ve resisted listening to it for a long time and now it is time. Every Ghetto, Every City - Adding to my Playlist. Best song on the album. Intro - Not Adding to my Playlist. I don’t think I need to explain anything. Lost Ones - Not Adding to my Playlist. Not really my type of song. One of two songs I listened to before today. Ex-Factor - Adding to my Playlist. It draws on a little too long but I like this more than Lost Ones. To Zion - Not Adding to my Playlist. I didn’t like this song. Doo Wop (That Thing) - Adding to my Playlist. I really like this song. This id the other song I listened to. Superstar - Not Adding to my Playlist. I just don’t like the vocals all that much. Final Hour - Adding to my Playlist. This is a pretty good song. Not much else to say. When It Hurts So Bad - Not Adding to my Playlist. The vocals are kinda annoying. I Used to Love Him - Not Adding to my Playlist. About as good as Lost Ones. Love that opening but it gets worse and worse as the song goes on. Forgive Them Father - Not Adding to my Playlist. Her vocals are a little annoying. Nothing Even Matters - Not Adding to my Playlist. Very long and not in a good way. Everything is Everything - Not Adding to my Playlist. A bit better than Lost Ones. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - Not Adding to my Playlist. It wasn’t that good in ny opinion. Can’t Take My Eyes Off You - Not Adding to my Playlist. The song is barely not good enough. Tell Him - Not Adding to my Playlist. Pretty bland. All in all I liked 4/16 songs. I thought the other songs were ok though and none were bad. It would’ve been a much better album if the songs were less drawn out. Also, what is wrong with Lauryn Hill? Was she always insane?

This album is not for me at all. I enjoyed the Fugees but this was a struggle.

sooooooo boring. Nothing much going on in terms of anything. Just a pain to sit through.

So much 8th grade class recordings. Too long and overrated, it was a struggle to listen to the entire thing.
