Reviews (page 13 of 13)
I've listened to this album before on a list of the top 100 albums of all time.... I think this falls into the category of I can appreciate that it's good, it's just not for me. R&B and soul are not my thing. Would never choose to listen to this, but I can appreciate it's a good example of this kind of thing!
Too much yo yo for me me yo.
Not for me
boring
I've listened twice and a half. There is depth here. Striking depth. My background is not black, female and American, but i still get themes here - themes that hold injustice and insufficient opportunity. The message is complex and really well delivered. Music elements are engaging, like really engaging..the classroom queries on what Love means, what it is, all that is really good spacing of the pieces, the pieces themselves, it's quite good. It still requires more concentration from me. It's among the more approachable pieces of rap and rhythm I've encountered. I do think it would be worthwhile pursuing more. More listening required. I don't quite know about the musical composition though, I heard the vocals strongly - they are powerful - possibly compelling with all the elements there. High 2 stars for me, but not three. Not yet anyway. It might rise to a 4.. but more time needs to pass before I can say that. It's the first time I've listened to her whole album, and for that, it's a good discovery. Takeaway - listen to the whole before making up your mind. Like, LISTEN.
She has a good voice and range but I didn't listen to the Rap style songs. So I'd only like about 1/2 the songs she sang.
Loved that it was melodic and mellow, but overall not my cup of tea.
Repetitive (uhn), rhythmic (uhn) meanderings (uhn, uhn-uhn), interspersed with appeals to God (God) and phrases interrupted (uhn) with random uhn’s (uhn) and words repeated (repeated) for lack of syllables (bals). Gets tired quickly.
I do not understand. Miseducated.
wenigstens kein autotune
Not my music.
2.5 Fine album, little long
It was ok
Man is this ever overrated. I do like Doo-Wop but I expected better. I remember everyone fawning over this album when I was a kid. She was easily the highlight of The Fugees but this didn't excite me much at all aside from a song that I've heard many, many times over the years. The big hit was a big hit for a reason but overall I'm baffled as to why this was so special.
I like a couple of the tracks. Not my style.
2,5
Not my jam, but didn't hate it.
started out solid, better then expected. But by the end (last 3 or so songs) it was nails on a chalkboard.
No sir, didn't like it.
I like Lauryn Hill but the album is still average..
My son assures me this is a major, classic hip-hop album. I had never heard it before, yes I guess I’m a troglodyte, so I was expecting something special. Even though it’s not my favourite type of music, I can still appreciate work well done. This just doesn’t come close at living up to the hype for me at all. Very disappointing really. It just didn’t connect with me one iota.
Good beats and a very good voice. Just not for me
I’d give this a 3 for my personal listening pleasure.
Overrated by far.
Meh? Liked some beats.
Expected I'd like this better than I did. Every Ghetto, Every City was the track I enjoyed the most if I picked one.
The sound I associate with late 90s - early 00s rap and R&B. I don't like the music, so the lyrics are hard to listen to.
Just awful. Couldn’t end soon enough
I didn’t love kt
Not for me, but I get it. She has a nice voice and the production is great. Doo Wop is fun.
I have said it before and I will say it again you don't need an into into your album, you just need to start it with a bannger. Also why does it have speaking parts from some bloke it breaks up the music and flow. Havent got to the end of the first proper track and already pissed off with this album. WHY IS THERE PEOPLE TALKING AT THE END OF THE TRACKS!!! It's unnecessary and a waste of everybodys time. Its like they have forgot to stop recording after each song. When Lauryn actually sings its not too bad, unfortunately that is too infrequent. Overall I would have wanted to rate this higher, but I can't because of the constant talking at the end of tracks. The track lengths were fat to long, this album could have been done in 2/3 of the time if it wasn't for all the messing about. Won't go back and listen again. Maybe she should get some education on how to do an album properly or find a decent producer who knows when to cut off a track .
yawn....... all the tracks sound the same
I know its good, but i think its boring
Singles are o&. Rest isn’t.
The album was ok. I don't think it's as ground breaking as everyone claims but that may be from the perspective of looking back from present to when this was released. As with a lot of hip hop albums of the time, there were a bit too many skit interludes for my taste. Everything I've read about Lauryn Hill as a person has been pretty negative and I'm again trying to separate the art from the artist. That said, she's clearly talented but Wyclef and Pras did their fair share of the heavy lifting in the Fugees to make that album special. That seems to be somewhat missing on this album. It's good, but not great. Standout tracks: Doo Wop (That Thing), Can't Take My Eyes Off of You
2 stars. Soul rap
uh uh, oh yeah. I'm sure it's fine if you like rap/hip-hop. Not for me.
I've never been a big fan of R&B and this album didn't change that. I think there's a lot of talent in this album, and I can definitely understand why it was/is so loved... it's just not my taste. I was familiar with "Doo Wop (That Thing)" because it was on Much Dance 2000 and I do like that song. I had a hard time listening to this impartially as I recently learned Lauryn Hill is pretty shitty to her fans; cancels shows last minute, comes on stage late and only performs briefly. Blegh. I feel a bit guilty giving this a low score but I personally didn't enjoy it.
90s Hip Hop. Kind of boring though. There was a lot of random people talking through the music aswell.
not feelingit
Nice Hip-hop beats, I'm not really a fan of this style of music but I've listened to some of the more famous guys, I liked some songs, but nothing to special for me, if you stop and think about the time frame it's really remarkable that a female singer could grow to fame in the heavily dominated scene by men The songs feel impactful and the lyrics carry a message, but not my style, I'll grade it according to importance and relevance to the hip-hop scene and not just my style of songs,
4. Pronto, vai começar a parecer tudo igual agora.
Lauryn has a great voice however this album just doesn’t do it for me. Only just made it through the whole thing and not in a hurry to go back
#17. I never really listened to Lauryn Hill before. Honestly I thought she made poppy r&b type shit, but as it turns out she was a rapper this whole time. Who knew? All I know is that this album is boring. Some lyrics from one of the song say "Come on baby, light my fire/ Everything you drop is so tired/ Music is supposed to inspire" and I wonder was she talking about herself because this shit is very much so tired and uninspiring. Just one skippable track after another. No part of this album was even remotely interesting. 2/5: meh
Taustalla soi.
# 92 : meh! From all the hype, Like Grammy Album of the Year (1999), to top 10 in Rolling Stone 500 top albums, Really disappointed with this, this album is not all that. A very ordinary R&B album and of course it goes over an hour! So boring! Favourite Track : Ex-Factor Listened : 20/10/2023
Appreciate the 90s nostalgia but this really isn't me
It's ok I guess, a bit nothingy in my view. She has a great voice though but seemingly let down by mediocre songwiting. Great cover too.
Rebel Vibe
She has a great voice. However does this album ever get faster than ambulatory? Had to stop half way. Sorry, not for me.
This was one of the legendary albums thst I’ve heard about for so many years that it could never live up to the hype. And it didn’t. Lyrically it was excellent but musically I found my attention drifting.
As an album with such a MASSIVE reputation I was a bit disappointed by it. Love, love, love the X factor, and Doo Wop but outside of that I got a little bored. Maybe the straighter rap stuff just isn’t my thing (the between song skits really aren’t)
Meh. Other than 'that thing' this album is completely forgettable.
Not really my thing.
p831. 1998. 2.5 stars. Drum machine and hip-hop, so wrong audience, and it goes on for far too long without any standout songs. Set against that, she's got a great voice. Unlikely to listen to this again though.
I want to love this but I just don’t. I never have. She has a great voice but it’s one paced and I don’t think the singles are that great.
Obviously it's good, just not my thing.
I wouldn't call this album "bad". Vocals and music is technically good. But there is nothing intresting in it. I felt like I was listening some basic "contemporary adult" radio, not 1001 albums that I have to listen. Songs are fine but don't differenciate from each other and I don't remember any particular song. I would consider rating this album a bit higher but it is sooo long...
I didn't enjoy this. Lauryn Hill has a pretty intense vocal talent, but this album just didn't come together. I remember hearing about it and how it was critically acclaimed in all of that, but this absolutely didn't do it for me.
The "neo-soul" parts of this album were quite passable, although not particularly engaging. On the other hand, I skipped the hip-hop tracks halfway through. Definitely not the worst out there, but I don't like the style and the tracks sounded so repetitive within themselves - if you listen to 10 seconds of it, you've basically heard the whole song. I can see some people liking it and I don't fault them for it. But for me it's a pass.
This is not for me. Good voice. But that's where my compliments stop.
Not a fan of the genre, but it's okay at some parts, and annoying at others. The duration is too long, but I guess we have the CD generation to blame for that.
This record made me take an absence from this project which lasted nearly a year. It's absolutely fine, but I'm not listening to it again so all I'll say is from what I recall she whines a lot, is a seriously asinine character but writes a couple of great tracks. It's too long and the skits range from good to shit. That's it.
Pénible
Kondensaattoripurkauskäyrä heh albuminpotentiaali syöksylasku. Ajanhetkellä t=60 min kokonaan purkaunut varaus ja alun kiihko. Pömppö pilaa, kiekuminen pilaa, female mc pilaa, R&B vituttaa, 2000-luku vittuilu vituttaa. Paras biisi jätetty viimeiseksi pistää VIHAK- iloksi.. hehh.. Iloinen olo siis.. heh.. Viihdytetty kuningasta..Niinkös oliko koko albumi hyvää EIPÄ OLLUT VIKA BIISI HÄMÄÄ ON KUANIS LOPETUS MUTTA SUURIN OSA PASKAA PASKAA.. eli siis oman genrensä täydellistä ja sulavaa hallintaa oli albumi. Eli kaksi tähtöstä heh heh
Onko sanoituksissa paljon painavaa sanomaa? Kuulosti, mutta ei ollut voimia kuunnella. Ainakaan melkein puoltatoista tuntia. Joitain kivoja koukkuja
Did not rate this at all
While there were rhythms, beats, and box I definitely enjoyed, this one just left me a little flat for some reason. There’re hints of a narrative and melodic thread here, but it’s not strong enough to tie together an absolutely stuffed LP that doesn’t have much exciting to say.
I wouldn't listen again through choice, but I would listen if there was no other option. Some songs are quite pleasant but not really my type of music.
Enjoyable but didn't really hit hard for me
Probably the only RNB album I like. I don't like it much, particularly when she takes you to church and gets into the praise Jesus vibes, but I have to stay a real standout in the genre.
Don't you mean "Ms. Lauryn HIll" ... ? Though I didn't try to listen to it until today, this never resonated with me... and unfortunately, still doesn't. I think for its time, this was considered phenomenal. Today it just sounds kinda old.
I’ll have to thank The Fugees for setting the bar too high, my expectations were destined to be unmet. I found this to be bland and boring, and pretty repetitive throughout. I listened to this one 3 times bc I couldn’t believe I didn’t like it, but I’ve accepted it now and I’m ready to finally review. Ex-Factor, To Zion, and I Used To Love Him are the only songs I liked.
She has a good voice but I don't like this style of music, especially the more rap-heavy parts where not my cup of tea.
Ehh...not my thing. I'm not a fan of her style of singing. I liked "Forgive Them Father" - that was a good track that caught my ear, but in general I found the album boring. I'm sure it's great for many people, just not me.
Not my style of music, but it's not bad. I like the few guitar forward bits.
Thought some songs are cool others bore me a bit and don't really remember what I listened to, also sounds a bit dated
Did not really feel this album, not very exciting and I don't really feel the gospelly vocals.
Nope
Not my genre
Nicht so meins. 2, 3 Hits aber
This album is soooooooo long that that's really my take-away. Just an exhausting album - made even longer by a minute of classroom skit after many songs. She can sing, she can write songs but someone get her an editor.
Can’t remember asking for popmusic.
If you can deal with the blatant sexism and casual racism, its an okay listen. One certified banger and then a lot of filler. Not for me.
Not a huge fan of this, a couple of good tracks but nothing I will revisit
Great photoshoping skills on that album art.
I always remember this being better
Meh. It probably sounded better in 1998.
Not my thing. Solid recording, but the music style, hip hop, Soft RnB, does not catch me
Found it all a bit repetitive and dull. Not my kind of thing though, granted.
Boring, but I really like her voice.
Sub fugues effort. Too long. Too samey Cover art 3/5
It didn't help that I wasn't feeling very well but not really my thing.
Much better Neo-Soul/R&B than some of the other albums on here. Hill can perform a range of styles successfully. She doesn't overly rely on gimmicks and warbling over the top vocals (though they are present natch) she remembers to include some choruses you can actually recognise a melody in. The god-bothering can be grating but the real issue here are the fucking pointless skits. There's a good album here getting buried by these naval gazing excerpts from a "classroom". Best Tracks: Doo Wop (That Thing); Every Ghetto, Every City; Everything Is Everything
not my cup of tea
it was ok. not my bag particularly.
This one's not really for me sorry!
She's talented for sure, but not my style. 2/5.
It was a long listen that's for sure. But as someone who is generally not really a hiphop/r&b enjoyer, this was surprisingly 'not that bad'. Still way to long with all the songs blending into one another. This makes the album excessively boring. I would say this is fine for one or two songs, but the whole album is a big no no.
Didn't like it. Not my kind of music.
// Favs: - Score: Light 2
Over rated
Not a fan
Nothing particularly wrong with this album but nothing leapt out at me either. All the tracks just blend together. It's not for me.
Ok. Not something I would have listened to otherwise
Did not enjoy as much as Wyclef Jean's solo album.
It was OK. Some groovy bits but mostly benign.
A blend of hip-hop, soul and R&B makes an enjoyable listen to most people, though I am not entirely convinced by the concept's strength, Lauryn's (at times) annoying vocals, or the slightly overdone repetition on some tracks. Hip-hop is not my favorite, though I find enough grit, edge and depth in other artists' discographies. In some cases, I had the feeling song length was an issue as well, especially in "Lost Ones" "To Zion" and "When it Hurts". When "Nothing even Matters" with D'Angelo came on, the cheese was almost too much to handle, and when the Four Seasons cover came on, I was happy to almost be done with this. A 2/5 for creativity, but barely.
With all the skits (so many of them) it reminded me of a social realist film using real, improvising actors. But one where the director has got too wrapped up in "the magic" once it comes to editing and refuses to cut whole swathes flab. So there are good moments - terrific beats, great rapping - balanced by utterly forgettable or painful moments. As far as social realism goes, yeah okay, that's life. But it's not always entertaining and I strongly doubt it's intentional.
Not my style
this album was highly recieved back in the day, probably because the world was awash with slow jamz and R'n'B was king of the world. so weird to hear her singing about love and being soppy knowing how much of an angry woman she is. its also worth noting that at the time this was viewed as a step forward for women in the urban music game - so in its own way this paved the way for WAP, thanks Laryn. i skipped about 50% of this album but there is the odd nice hip hop track hidden in between the 90s amy winehouse crap. loses points because of the new variation of the rap album skit, i'd rather hear her talking to her mates about how she is the master of shagging than kids talking about love.
Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: Forgive Them Father Cutting Edge: Ex-Factor, To Zion, Doo Wop (That Thing) Overall Notes: Let me just say that this was really good R&B/rap. Unfortunately, R&B/rap where almost every song is over 5 minutes long is not my thing. There's only so much Fergie-singing-the-National-Anthem-ing I can take before I tune out the lyrics, even if those lyrics are really good. Was close to giving it a three, but I was kinda bored listening to a lot of these songs. I'm sure that if I ever grow to like R&B I'll look back and laugh at what an idiot I was for giving this album a 2, but that's where I am right now.
Aikamoista voitelumusaa. Vähän liikaa Uuuu-uUUUuu-uUUU:ta minun makuun.
One great song, the rest was silly.
Not my thing. But did bring back memories
3.5
Not a fan of lauryn hill, thanks art as experience
Not my favorite.
I understand why this was huge in the late 90s but I never really heard it then (outside of the single[s]) and it's not really for me now.
its fine, just not my thing
So repetitive
She ain't the only one to go through a bad school system.
one good song
Miseducation? About sums it up.
How and why is this here? Some may like, but I don't like.
I'm going to base this rating almost entirely on the only song of hers that I had heard before this album. The song "Selah" from the Ya-Ya Sisterhood soundtrack. The song sucks and goes on for-f*ing-ever. After about two minutes I realized that sings the same for notes of the same scale over and over. It's a bit maddening that she then went on and did and entire album of it.
Why do I find this just mildly annoying? Maybe it's the elongated words, 'My soul is weaeaeaery' My ears are weary. Nah, not into this at all.
Oh no. This isn't my kind of music at all. I still don't like her because the Fugees took the number one spot from Three Lions back in the day. A real slog this one, not helped by heavy weather outside today.
trash
Nah.
this was so boring and long and didn’t resonate with me at all
Meh
Inte för mig
Just not my thing
first 3 songs are good then its a snoozefest how is this one of the best albums ever
Like World Music, this is unlistenable. Not that the people can't sing, it's that the subject matter is so boring, so over trod, so base, so stupid. If prefer the stupid fantasy metal about knights and unicorns to this drivel.
did not listen to this album. Lauryn Hill is a bit of a controversial figure in the rap world so I think I will avoid her for the time being
No llega a explotar nunca, generico
It’s not Hill’s fault, but after yet another commercial anglo-american album, this list is getting rather tedious. Do the people who chose these 1001+ albums realise that there are other countries besides those where English is spoken? She has a good voice. Repetitive backing vocals, with all the "yo yo", "yeah yeah", "ah ah", "ya ya" etc. The cover image has a good idea, but is executed poorly (especially the font used for the title). 1.5 / 5
Gut mit den Fugees, sonst nicht meins
Lauryn Hill is a bad person and an even worse musician. It's not good, and it drags on too long. Apple Music is insane for putting this album as the best of all time, but I shouldn't have expected much because the rest of that list was shit.
I listenen 3 songs i coukdnt more
Couldn’t wait for school to be out. It’s hard to believe The Miseducation was album of the year, musta been one dogshit year in music. Wasn’t good when it dropped, little better now but still not good. Yo, yo, yo, the classroom chatter between songs did not add anything positive to the album. Overall, it’s a miss. L = (1.5*s) Unh, unh, unh… J = (1.5*s) Best thing about this album is the cover art and the cover of Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.
Fuck me, just shut the fuck up already. We get it, you messed up your life, now you wanna tell the whole world. No one cares. Just what the world needs, someone to preach at us from their new found wisdom. Merde.
Dogshit
Not for me.
90s rnb
1. intro was cute had a little spin very uniquie i love 2.not what i would usally listen, i lover her voice. head bop song. can barely understand what she i saying, not the fan of the music. 3. not my style of music, her voice is absouluty amazing tho it is very fitting for this genre of music. no smth i would personally listen to. 3.chill laid back. i dont like this genre of music at all im sorry i think i might jst stop here because i know i dont like it and ima fall asleep, ik its not very open minded of me but its only day 2 i will find smth i like here
I tried my best but unfortunately this was not for me. I enjoyed the instrumental but not really my jive.
Not for me
It was awful, she has a pretty voice if she cared to sing rather than that ceaseless whatever it is. It was annoying and irritating. I dont understand how people can say they like it.
I don't care
Long & tedious. I struggled to finish this one, but I will certainly not struggle to completely forget that it even exists by supper time. I want peach cobbler for dessert.
Fuck whoever made this racist account.
I quite like some of The Fugees tracks so was interested to hear this. Hasn’t grabbed me initially though, but only part way through my first play through. That said, I’ve already fast forwarded a couple of tracks so it’s not sounding overly promising… Going into this I really hoped I’d enjoy it, but sadly I haven’t. Whilst it pains me in many ways I’m going to have to give this a lonely 1.
DFL kako bismo rekli, dosta faking loše. Ne mogu taj loš hip hop slušati, jedva dobar mogu poslušati. 1/5, 1/10
Someone who understands the history of hip hop will know why this is a classic album, but it’s not working for me
Yet another album where IT and I have nothing in common. Don’t want to be rude about it so will leave it there. 1/5 27/10/25
Nope.
Not really my thing. I prefer jazz and blues.
Can’t believe how many shit albums are in this list.
Uh huh, huh, yeah, yo, etc etc. This sort of stuff just gets on my wick. I don't feel qualified to judge it on merit, only that it doesn't do anything for me.
When I listened to Lauryn Hill’s album, I found it unbelievably bad. On the first play it got under my skin so much that I almost quit, but I forced myself to listen again. The second time was slightly less awful, maybe because I was distracted. Still, the whole album feels like one long low point. “Superstar” stood out negatively, and the cover of Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You was, in my view, ruined beyond belief. The only track that made me pause was Final Hour, because it has a flute that actually sounds musical. Carlos Santana also plays a short acoustic guitar part, but it gets buried in the rest. I simply can’t connect with this modern version of R&B at all. Sorry.
She is talented. I just never got all the hoopla about this album. Sue me
I was encouraged by the intro track with the school teacher-ish reading of names. Lauryn Hill was missing. Imagine my disappointment when she turned up on the very next track! The tracks are not a screaming horror show as some offerings on 1001, but none were ticking boxes. Its a no from me. NO! About 1 hour 16 minutes too long. No, changed my mind, 1h 17mins too long.
Garbage
Not for me.
Said her name in the songs, check. Talked about how good at rapping she is, check. Skits, check. Lots of "uhs" and "yeahs," check. Guest rappers, check. Bragging about how much money she's going to make as a rapper, check. Talk about sex, check. Although it wasn't in the same context as most rap albums. This checks all the boxes to clarify as a generic rap/hip hop album. Too long for it's own good with nothing that really makes it stand out. The only redeeming quality is she has a decent singing voice when she actually felt like singing. 1.5/5
Nope
Very bland.
Rating: 0.2 I am so tired of this astroturfed vibe curator nonsense, I’ve had enough for the rest of my life. Incredibly grating, dated, borderline challenging. Makes it worse when you know everything that comes out of her mouth is a lie and she mistreats her fans and everyone around her. Enough Lauryn Hill.
I felt nothing but boredom. "Everything is Everything". Genius...
Not for me
This isn’t something that was made for me, nor do I particularly want to hear it again. I understand why it’s critically acclaimed, but my tastes in hip hop do not lead me to come anywhere close to enjoying this album. The flow, timbre, and general vocal style does nothing for me. I’m not at all upset about the instrumentation and production value, musically it’s very good for what it is, but the vocals kill the record for me. It was a slog to get through this and I’m glad it’s over.
Didn’t like it
The bits you know of the songs you know are fun...
Not a fan, she's very rude and arrogant. This album is truly overrated. MTV unplugged was hideous. She is horrible live and mails it in.
Leukste nummer: I used to love him
How is this even on here. Really full of ego and ramblings. Got to a minute in of Do Wop and thought life is too short to be listening to this tripe.
Sorry Lauren hill fans got 1 song in can’t do it. Didn’t like her when she came out in the 90s. Will have to give her a 1 star. I love rap love female rappers just not a fan of her.
Honestly this one didn’t do anything for me, nothing at all stood out on it. I normally give every album at least two listens but I have zero desire to give this another go.
Sobrevalorado
Interesting voice...
I don't like this type of music. I don't like Lauryn Hill at all. I and really really didn't like this album.
I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would, still very much not for me.
Angry biatch
Didn't like it.
Honestly, this album is really nice to the ear, but it feels more like an exploration of samples over someone rapping. Lauryn Hill sings like no other but her music isn't my kinda thing, even a song she had with Carlos Santana (which is one of my favorites musicians) felt underutilized. I expected more, but I guess her music isn't for me at all
Overall, didn't really like it. There were a few cuts like Superstar, Final Hour, and that Frankie Valli cover that I enjoyed but overall the record mostly missed me. I'm just not into R&B and overall, the immense length of the record and the sheer amount of 5+ minute long songs is just a nonstarter for me. The concept is cool and learning about Ms Lauryn Hill's inspirations behind the album helped contextualize it overall but I can't say this is one I'll be excited to revisit outside of a few tracks that appear to be on the less-beloved part of this classic-but-not-for-me record.
No nie porwało mnie niestety. 2/10.

Jaahas. Kai tää on ihan hyvin tehty mutta on kyllä mulle kohtuu mitäänsanomatonta musiikkia
Even someone like me who doesn't like this type of music still can tell that this album is too good and def a game changer but it just not my cup of tea that's why I didn't enjoy it at all so i'll give it 3/10
not my cup of tea
I would rate 0
No
She skipped that day in school when they were teaching how to make good music.
Closing track ("Tell Him") goes really hard, and "Nothing Even Matters" too. I Knew "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" before, great too. Also I like the discussions separate from the songs, a nice touch Still, this rap album isn't as much my thing. There *is* certain rap I really like though, like Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by OutKast (it also has discussions separate from songs, which are done very well there)
I'm interested in giving this one a listen. Ever since I sat through the Fugee's second album I've seen this album everywhere and have heard about how great and influential Lauryn Hill is despite only having three albums to her name. Listened to it and yeah, not a fan. I can understand where this album innovated if Lauryn Hill was one of the first people to popularise the "being shaken" style of singing, but that kind of vocal performance sounds like utter shit to me. It's an impressive display of vocal range and prowess, but I firmly believe that it belongs to the "for record producers only" category. Every song being sung in this style combined with the minimal instrumentals, lack of breathing room and hour seventeen runtime made this album a profoundly miserable listening experience for me. I wasn't compelled to listen to the lyrics too closely, but they all came across as pretty insipid and self-aggrandising to me. Which beckons the question. Why this is considered a concept album? There isn't really an arc to any of the discussed themes, and what is discussed falls vaguely within the realm of self-love or something. The entire experience is fruitless to me.
Typ RnB, verkligen inte min grej.
First Album I’m rating. I’ve resisted listening to it for a long time and now it is time. Every Ghetto, Every City - Adding to my Playlist. Best song on the album. Intro - Not Adding to my Playlist. I don’t think I need to explain anything. Lost Ones - Not Adding to my Playlist. Not really my type of song. One of two songs I listened to before today. Ex-Factor - Adding to my Playlist. It draws on a little too long but I like this more than Lost Ones. To Zion - Not Adding to my Playlist. I didn’t like this song. Doo Wop (That Thing) - Adding to my Playlist. I really like this song. This id the other song I listened to. Superstar - Not Adding to my Playlist. I just don’t like the vocals all that much. Final Hour - Adding to my Playlist. This is a pretty good song. Not much else to say. When It Hurts So Bad - Not Adding to my Playlist. The vocals are kinda annoying. I Used to Love Him - Not Adding to my Playlist. About as good as Lost Ones. Love that opening but it gets worse and worse as the song goes on. Forgive Them Father - Not Adding to my Playlist. Her vocals are a little annoying. Nothing Even Matters - Not Adding to my Playlist. Very long and not in a good way. Everything is Everything - Not Adding to my Playlist. A bit better than Lost Ones. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - Not Adding to my Playlist. It wasn’t that good in ny opinion. Can’t Take My Eyes Off You - Not Adding to my Playlist. The song is barely not good enough. Tell Him - Not Adding to my Playlist. Pretty bland. All in all I liked 4/16 songs. I thought the other songs were ok though and none were bad. It would’ve been a much better album if the songs were less drawn out. Also, what is wrong with Lauryn Hill? Was she always insane?
This album is not for me at all. I enjoyed the Fugees but this was a struggle.
sooooooo boring. Nothing much going on in terms of anything. Just a pain to sit through.
So much 8th grade class recordings. Too long and overrated, it was a struggle to listen to the entire thing.
-1 tane bile 90 bpm üzeri şarkı yok. -R&B türünde bir albüm -Mutlu şarkıları ortalama bir albüm (90 üzerinde bir tane bile yok) -Puanım 1/5
Straining to listen to this amelodic Soul Hip Hop mix.
Bajsplatta.
16 tracks of solid no thank you. Oddly Lauded as breakthrough, she has a good voice but little else. Musically dull at best
niks kunnen uitluisteren... mismusic from lauren
Utter tosh
I can see why people love this, but it's not for me.
It's a no from me
Not my style...
Not my thing
Rap just doesn't do it for me
No.
not my style, didn't like it at all
Je ne suis pas allé au bout ...
I don’t know, I just didn’t care for it. I thought some of the rap parts were good, but then I feel as though the group singing parts really ruined it for me.
Ok
If you took away the warbles, the 16-track album would shrink to a 2-track EP, and be all the better for it. Some might say that her voice dances and weaves, but for me the frequent thought was a simple plead: "Make it stop!" (Tip to anyone that ever takes me captive and wants to break my will, play the last minute of track 9 on a loop and I’ll cave in and tell you everything you want to know)
ae
Gangsta rap is not my thing, 1/5
I thought the opening Intro quite amusing. The second track (The Lost Ones) is pretty tedious cliched rapping. The vocals on the third track, Ex-Factor are just painful to listen to as is the fourth track, To Zion. This isn't looking good for this album. And it keeps on going. And I kind of lost the desire to listen to more of this. But I did play the whole thing and I frankly cannot see why this made it into this list of albums one must hear.
That's a pass for me.
I remember the hype about this one, and listening to it again, I don't think it held up well.
I thought I would like this album but really didn’t like it at all. It was too jazzy and the songs were forgettable and annoying at points when the reputation of lyrics over and over started. Not a fan of this one. 1/5
No
More annoying rap nonsense.
Not my cup of tea
Not aimed at me but not a fan
Still not a big fan of hip hop
No lo escuché
Naja nicht so mein Ding.
this is a hard listen for me. Not my thing. 1/5
Forgive me father was okay and slightly enjoyable. Everything else… nope
Not my style of music
I do not like contemporary R'n'B genre
Quite boring. Very repetitive and monotone; nothing really stood out. This album is too long to not have anything worth listening too. I was waiting for it to end nearly the entire time. The self-titled track is the best on the album.
Didn't like the few songs I listened to.
If she can’t be bothered to show up to her concerts, I can’t be bothered to listen to her music.
only half listened because it really wasn’t my thing
I hate Hip-Hop
Langdrygt, uinspirerande
Not a fan.
I wasn't interested in this album in 1998 and a relisten now confirms my feelings. It was cutting edge in 1998,: but now feels dated. Still, the production is stellar, but it's just so generic for the times. I can't find any reason to ever listen to this again, at least I've documented it this time around.
It wasn't really that bad, but it felt like it lasted forever and in the end I was just sooo tired. Every song was way too long and not even one of them managed to catch my interest.
Everything you drop is so tired Music is supposed to inspire the message of everything is everything was okay. Done way better in other songs/talks.
Ei paskaa, mutta miinusta täysin tarpeettomasta pituudesta. Mitä minun tulisi tehdä tällä tuotteella? Laittaa soimaan "taustamusiikiksi"?
hard pass
I believe Ms Lauryn Hill once said she'd rather die than a white person listen to her album. I hope I have done my bit.
Just not into gospel hip hop I guess. Some parts are okay .
It's not even the most repetitive and unoriginal rap album I've found 'till now, so I was maybe thinking giving it 2 stars. But again, that's not even music to me, I've just regretted giving 2 stars to the others not-so-unoriginal rap albums I've met. You deserve your 1 star
Not a rap fan
Big nope. I'd prefer to grate my ears off than subject them to this.
Not my style, I’m sure there are plenty of people who enjoy it just doesn’t do anything for me.
Not for me.
Sudu kruva!
I really liked the fugees album, but this is just so much less creative. It has none of the clever lyrics, creative instrumentals
bruh
Garbage
Not bad, but not for me.
Tough listen. Not for me. Used an interesting framing device that played along with the education/classroom theme.
Rubbish
Lyrics? Nope. Entweder Check ich’s nicht, oder „What you need ironically Will turn out what you want to be“ hat nix mit Ironie zu tun, oder? Konzeptuell gefallen mir die Schulbank Zwischenstücke am besten. Blasse 1.1
Nope.
