Overall Rating - 3.31/5 (6.63/10). Atmospheric, nothing I would really listen to, but well done.

Not good musically but when I saw that the creator was from Leeds I desperately searched in the hope that he was connected with or a fan of the Super Whites AKA LEEDS UNITED. If he was it goes without saying this album would get 5 stars. Unfortunately there is no evidence of any involvement but I am sure he must have at least once travelled past Elland Road and stared in wonder at the stadium which in my book is worth at least two stars. As it happens this is how I would rank the album on its musical value. Like a bit of ambient but not keen at all on its hip hop connections. 2/5 29/8/26

5/10 A triphop/electronic act from the 90s that I never heard of before today. It's a vibey, chill kind of album - the type of music you can put on as background music while working which will not interrupt your concentration. That being said, the music is not particularly exciting, and the album is far too long.

I would say the list has a good selection of downtempo albums overall, but this is a miss. I can understand its importance in 1995, but Smokers Delight is just a mindnumbingly tedious and unrewarding listen. Using it as a background wouldn't help much either, it would genuinely tire me out on a subconscious level.

I’d be lying if I said I understood why this was on here. It’s background noise you’d hear in a hotel lobby or on hold on the phone with a company that treats you with contempt, like cellular and internet providers. It’s fine though. Like, it’s not unlistenable or bad in any demonstrated way.

Pleasantly surprised to see this here. If I were to make a case for its inclusion on this list, I'd point to Warp Records mattering a great deal and Nightmares on Wax being a key part of its early history. But Smokers Delight never really rises above late-90s-Ibiza-chillout-room-cum-early-00s-Gap background music. That it came out in 1995 is interesting to do some math with — it precedes Endtroducing and a host of other legendary records in the subgenre. But there is far better stuff out there if you are drawn to this at all. Even his own follow-up, Carboot Soul, would be a better recommendation.

I actual had this album, but never fully listened to it. It’s a nice little lofi number that goes on too long. It’s just oops all grooves the whole way down. Some of them culminate into something, but most just sort of end. I can’t say it’s the most musically impressive thing, it’s sort of an instrumental jam session for an hour and fifteen minutes. It’s not bad, but it’s not really breaking new ground either.

Highlights: Nights Introlude, Dreddoverboard, Wait A Minute/Praying For A Jeepbeat, Mission Venice. In a nutshell: it's all about tha journey. "...I was sat in a friend's house. We were having a psychedelic experience, let's just say, and we were listening to The KLF album Chill Out. I sat in his living room, away with the fairies, and I was like 'you know what? I'm gonna do MY Chill Out. But I'm gonna do a hip hop Chill Out. And I'm gonna call it Smoker's Delight.' It was that simple." Nightmares On Wax at Royal Albert Hall, 12th March 2026. Go in knowing that it's meant to be played in the background. You don't have to be high to appreciate this album. Relax with a drink/cuppa. Go for a long drive/walk. Let specific sounds catch your attention. Albums in this wheelhouse are built on loops, which I can see why it will bore some listeners. If this isn't your thing, listen to Mission Venice and Wait A Minute/Praying For A Jeepbeat- both are under 3 minutes- first then start from the beginning. BUT if you liked this album, try A Grand Love Story by Kid Loco and The Mirror Conspiracy by Thievery Corporation. Overall: 7/10

Very dull, very mechanical. It's a mild form of jazz funk, but with no jazz or funk. All the instruments sound sequenced and quantised, flattened out and nailed into place. Bland, interminable, heavily processed background music. A waste of time to listen to this.

Very chill record. I usually don't like albums that are as long as this one (over an hour of music), but it actually didn't bother me as the music is fairly enjoyable. The tracks have a similar vibe while still being distinguishable from one another. I will definitely listen to it again! Favorite track: Pipes Honour 4.5/5

Had no idea what I was getting into with this, but I surprisingly enjoyed it. Largely soothing and inoffensive. I still think there’s too much random British electronica on this list, but this is one of the better entries.

Reggae trip hop? Never heard of that combination before but I wouldn't have been surprised since they both have a chill, hypnotic vibe to them. This is most definitely background music, something to put on while you study rather than intently listen. Seems that there are different avenues of listening to music "the right way" even though objectively there aren't any. Using it to study is just one of the more common ways we'd listen to this, but it doesn't make it any better than listening to each track intently (2.5-3).

Fun for trip hop but not my fav genre

The word Delight and this album should never be put together. Listener's ear bleed would be a better title. 1

On the one hand, I'd expected something called 'nightmares' to be a bit more dynamic and shocking. On the other hand, it's definitely something I could sleep through.

Why is this here? Not a rhetorical question, really, one must ask why this is included on a "greatest of all time" list of any kind, much less what is meant to be an universal collection if important musical artistry. As mind-numbing jams to zone out to and supply a backdrop, sure, this works; but I really don't see where the assumed supreme and outstanding quality or indeed artistry would be found in this. I don't meant to disrespect anyone making music or mastering all kinds of instruments, but there's levels and categories to music, and this I do not quite get. A few of the tracks stood out a bit more, in a positive sense; others were hitting me with a nasty hoinky-sploinky (negative). The last one was kinda alright. Yet, the whole thing just dragged on and on - cut the runtime in half and perhaps this would be tolerable. Add some strong identity and atmosphere, and it could even be memorable. Actually, it was indeed a rhetorical question.

The average global grade of this album reflects the product on offer quite nicely. This isn't music so much as it is entirely competent but unevocative set dressing, so the grade it gets likely reflects the mood you're already in. Only thing I'll say is that the name, title and cover art of the album heavily leans towards a reggae aesthetic, and sadly that's almost entirely not what the album is about.

6/10 - honestly a nice relaxed listen, very good to have in the background

It’s a great load of background music that is groovy enough but never seems to go anywhere or say anything. Inoffensive and mostly bland, it’s like trip hop with the good bits taken out. I didn’t dislike it. It don’t affect me enough to have that strong a reaction.

If you told me this was an album full of sample beats for lame rappers that were never used, I’d believe you. Just because cds could hold 74 minutes of music doesn’t mean that they should.

Monotonous. None of the songs went anywhere, they just stayed with the same beat. They didn't evolve.

Probably should have been titled Tokers Delight, it’s a smooth, trippy, downtempo electronica album that would likely be a better listen if stoned . Dreamy and drifty, the music (and occasional lyrics) conjure up some fantastical images. Only downside is the whole thing runs too long even for those with long attention spans. Very repetitive loops that run 5+ minutes. Loved the right to left stereo effect in Cruise. Overall, enjoyed the lengthy experience! (3.6*s) Will check out more from Nightmares On Wax when I have an extra few hours…

Nightmares puts you in a daydreaming mood. Super chilled out electro-jazz. Def get the smokers vibe on this album. Another long one but I'll take it over any Miles Davis. Good background music. Cool doodle cover art to boot. Not writing home about the record but solid 90s groove at 2.65 stars.

Glad to see that electronic genres continue to get representation on this list. At the onset I wouldn't have expected so many artists to get so much love but I can't complain. Perhaps the British background helped for exposure to the list creator as I wasn't previously familiar with Nightmares On Wax but enjoyed the trip hop electronica cuts for the most part. Relatively simple beats with chill vibes that were mostly smooth and comforting. Overall easy to be in a good headspace with this on in the background. While it might be a little lo-fi for certain situations or everyday listening, it worked well for some background tunes while reviewing project plans at work. It might get a little too minimalistic and threadbare down the stretch but overall it works for certain environments. There are some better electronic acts out there in terms of the overall mixing and production but I dug this Nightmares On Wax album. I'm not much of a smoker but I guess I was mostly delighted. 2.89 stars

The most reggae looking album cover ever

A strange mix of trip hop, laid-back house, reggae(!) and R&B from some lads from Sheffield. I don't know if it's a nightmare, but it's certainly very dreamy, and there are times when it's really captivating. On balance, it goes on way too long, so the lovely effect is lost by the end, but still, a pleasant time was had by all.

Not sure why people are so against background music being on here, not all background music is bad. This does certainly have a place and that's probably playing at a head shop

This is background music. TV, movies, real life...doesn't matter. This is the kind of thing you put on when you can't have lyrics distracting you. To that end, it's not terrible, it's just there. There's too much of this album. Groove St. goes on for far too long. I'm having a tough morning already and this is not providing any kind of relief. Mission Venice is my favorite track so far, even if it does just sound like a piece of a 60s heist movie score on a loop. The start of Rise sounds like the music from Final Fantasy VIII. They have better music than this. As far as EDM goes, this is probably the best of it.

This was assigned to me while all of New York was smothered under smoke from Canadian wildfires. A coincidence? Not to mention, there’s a moment where you hear the word ‘rain’ repeated over and over, and then a crazy downpour started, as if conjured. It caused major floods all around my neighborhood. What kind of freaky magic is this?

Man, it’s been ages since I last heard this. This album is jazzy, groovy, and incredibly laid-back, with hypnotic trip hop beats and ambient atmospheres. It’s the kind of middle of the road album that fits just about any situation. Whether you’re at a house party where people are getting into the groove, or casually driving with your grandparents after picking them up from the nursing home for lunch, this album just works. It’s smooth, inoffensive, and effortlessly cool.

Not bad. Pretty monotheistic in terms of sound. One concept is established and it’s run with pretty much throughout the entire album. Nonetheless, it’s a nice vibe and interesting music. Overall, Again, it didn’t blow me away entirely, but it sits and occupies its own space nicely.

I’m at a 3. I mean, look; it’s clearly a record intended as the loose background soundtrack to a smoke session. That should be apparent from the title. When this album wants to kick into more of a natural groove, it is kind of a delight, and I’d say that, as background noise, I enjoyed 8 out of the core 13 tracks here, which I listened to while reading a book. The problem, of course, is that background noise needs to evolve in order to continually stimulate the senses. This album does not fucking evolve its tracks whatsoever, leaving the senses far more prone to recognize the repetition at hand here. It’s like listening to the base of a plunderphonics track without all of the additional samples & instrumentation that’s meant to be layered on top. Admittedly, it’s not too annoying, especially if you’re already the type of person to use Nintendo music as a studying tool (see: me), but the result is that so many tracks feel infinitely longer than their already decently long runtimes due to that lack of extra energy. 72 minutes is a bit absurd here; even an MF DOOM Special Herbs album isn’t anywhere near that long, at least in terms of individually packaged volumes. It’s also just not structured very well as an album, which is the main reason I’m bumping it down to a 3 – some awkward shifts in the mood from track to track leave it inconsistent in the tone & imagery it’s trying to give off. More than that, this album had a track solely devoted to blowing up a bomb in my ears, as well as putting a Reprise for a track RIGHT AFTER the track it is reprising. Something had to have gotten lost in translation here, because it just feels like a well-intentioned album that doesn’t hit the mark. I want to be nicer to this, but even my nicest outcome would be a 3.5 bumped down to a 3; this isn’t in the territory of a 4 (although I might’ve been generous if this had ended on “Rise”) & it DAMN sure isn’t a 5. It’s a very solid, albeit marginally plain 3 that only occasionally kicks up the energy. It’s great background / chill out music, but it’s just not as compelling of an album experience as it could've been. I don’t know if it had to be on the list.

Solid album, but I started to reach a point where I felt like I was on hold for a call center for a bit three songs in.

Would be excellent background music during a dinner gathering and conversation, or if I was in a deep focus work fugue. But I was in neither so it was just fine.

I'm not convinced I would have enjoyed this more if I'd been stoned while listening. Prefer my chill out to be a little less busy, a little less jazz funky, and a bit more interesting. It's fine, though.

The album is pretty cool but most of the songs are way too long. The loops are not interesting enough for 8 mins.

Wikipedia says this is trip-hop, and the cover and album title speak for themselves. Should be interesting... Starts off great, love the first track. Love how the second track establishes itself and then evolves. A very vague thing to say but hey Third track is very long and drawn-out, but that's not a complaint. I really like how each track sets up and explores a different mood. They all feel related, but separate (even if this may grow tiresome eventually). Stars is great. As I feared, since the album is a bit long, these tracks start feeling a bit too slow, and what were previously interesting developments now feel drawn out. I haven't disliked anything so far though. Just when I wrote all that, the album brings me back around with Man (The Journey). Its energy is both completely different from everything that came before and a welcome change. After Mission Venice, one of the album's most famous songs, just came and went, without feeling much of a mark, I think the rest of the album may do exactly the same. I was wrong! I quite like Rise. It is confusing that the second to last song is a reprise of the previous one, but I like the closer, even if it sounds nothing like every other song that came before. Overall, this was fine. Some songs were great, some were good but too long, and others went nowhere. While there were no bad moments, there were some boring ones. Cutting the album down a bit would do it some favours. But still, nice experience!

Some of the other reviews for this album refer to it as "wallpaper," which I find interesting. Sure, wallpaper can just fade into the background if you're not a details person. It can also transform a room and set the feeling of it altogether. And if you look close, wallpaper can have all kinds of interesting stuff going on within it. It also requires skill to pick out the right thing and install it. So, you can call it wallpaper as an insult if you want, but I'll call it the wallpaper that created the perfect mood in my room today. I'll definitely add this to my personal collection, along with a couple other of his albums ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Was vaguely aware of Nightmares on Wax - but was expecting a more dubby / stoner vibe for private school reefer boys. Was therefore a bit surprised that its much more commercial/jazzy ambient and upbeat than was expecting. Its a perfectly pleasant background listen - but having listened to it twice I cannot recall a single song/ movement - its all very superficial and empty. Hardly a nightmare.

Good, chill background music, better than a lot of electronica/dance that I've heard. And also, I will likely never listen to it again.

This is perfect for flow-state background music while you work or do whatever you want to focus on. Unobtrusive, trance-like, and some cool samples from different genres. Not the kind of thing I'd throw on to just listen to the music by itself, because it's not particularly interesting, but music like this serves a purpose for me at least.

Vänder mig å det starkaste emot att detta skulle vara nån spa-musik det här är själva blueprinten för after-hours. Som sådan är den bra utan att vara sensationell. Naturligtvis inte ett album du ska sitta å "lyssna" på, det här är musik för när dansen är slut, bruksmusik. Därmed blir också albumlängden på 74 min orelevant (vet inte vilken du hittade Dagge som va över 100 min?). Du ska kunna sätta på den här likväl som en mixcd från Café del Mar. Och den gör sitt jobb alldeles utmärkt. Den melodiska basen är genomgående jättefin, det triphopig bra mycket mer klubb än Portishead och acid jazzreferenserna både tydliga och snygga. Jag saknar den finess och gränsöverskridande edge som exempelvis Ballistic Brothers har. Vilket gör att NoW känns mycket mer utslätat och märkt av tidens tand. Men det är fortfarande bra och gör sitt jobb alldeles utmärkt Stabil trea

Småtrevligt. Blir emellertid sällan något mer än bakgrundsmusik som varken stör eller engagerar. Men 100 minuter loungemusik blir naturligtvis alldeles för mycket för att nå tvåan.

Musik som en del av inredningen i en hotellbar eller på ett spa. I den genren är det rätt bra. Ett album jag måste ha hört? Knappast. Efter en genomlysning kan jag inte avgöra om jag hört de tre första spåren på repeat eller hela albumet.

Totally unfamiliar with Nightmares On Wax, but clearly the precursor to Chill Beats to Study To. Smokers Delight features jazzy downtempo hip-hop beats, electronica, and trip-hop, all blended nicely. I can understand the criticisms of songs being a little repetitive, but that's also just the music style. There are so many songs that feel like they were featured on Adult Swim (quick research found they were heavily featured, though song from a newer album. Not all the songs hit home for me, but enough of them hit me in a meaningful enough way to make Smokers Delight very enjoyable.

I dig this. Reading some other reviews, people expected it to be something else judging the album cover, some kind of reggae or whatever. Same, but let’s think about it…Smokers Delight…a purely instrumental, groovy, background type of music. It’s smoking music. Meant to be played in the background while you smoke and joke. Sets a nice vibe, don't have to pay too much attention to appreciate the groove. I love this kind of stuff. Not the greatest instrumental I’ve ever heard, but will probably revisit for background while I work, study, or smoke.

This title and cover are very misleading. I was very confused by the lack of traditional reggae style. I'm not mad at that cause tbh reggae isn't really my thing (I'm open to trying more tho!). It's an alright instrumental album, I like it less than ones I've listened to prior in the list as I just started to get really bored as it went on. Gives background music vibes, but moreso what plays in a crowded room where you can barely hear the music. I'm not putting this on unless it's for that specific situation, not bad per say but not very interesting. Fav Track: Rise

A mostly musical album of pretty chill music. Is this supposed to be what stoners listen to? I thought they put on live tracks of the Dead... This isn't hard to listen to, but it wasn't thrilling enough for repeated listens.

When I saw the negative reviews I knew I would enjoy this 😆 This is a straightforward down tempo chilled instrumental album. Yes it does would like background music, the sort of thing that you would hear in some beachside summer bar with its “Ibiza” vibes (I’ve never been to Ibiza). Good music doesn’t mean you have to have complex stuff that requires concentration or virtuoso soloists that you think you have “discovered”. It doesn’t have to have lots of lyrics on teenage angst by the new “people’s poet”. Sometimes it can be laid back and easy to absorb, something to enhance a mood. I think that this is one of those albums. Being called smokers delight I must admit I was expecting something more sunny, particularly with the green and red cover. It is more electronica Perfectly reasonable album but I’m not sure why it should be in the 1001

With a title like 𝘚𝘮𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, I expected something memorable. Instead, I got an album that seems content to coast on the same relaxed grooves for nearly an hour without ever developing them into anything particularly interesting. The atmosphere is there, but atmosphere alone isn’t enough. Track after track drifts by in the same hazy mood, and before long everything begins to sound interchangeable. I kept waiting for a moment that would surprise me or pull me back in, but the album never really gives me one. Maybe it works as background music, but as something I’m supposed to actively listen to, I find it painfully monotonous. More than anything, it leaves me wondering why it’s considered essential listening in the first place.

I don’t think there is any sugar-coating this - it is shit. Boring, repetitive wankmusik, and it goes on for 72 fucking minutes. I’d rather stick thistles up my arse than listen to this again.

Another one which is totally new to me. Not at all what I was expecting based on the album art, which looks more like Bob Marley and less like the boring blandness which followed. Suitable for some purpose, I suppose. Music to clip your toenails by, perhaps.

I prefer my trip hop with a bit more cinema, a la Portishead. But totally chill and unobtrusive!

Background music at work, but even then, I found myself getting bored with it. Just so still and with very little punch, especially at a time when juggernaut trip-hop and instrumental hip-hop groups were making the rounds (Massive Attack, DJ Shadow, Portishead, Chemical Brothers, etc.). This just seems too tame; I don't get it. 'Pipes of Honor' and 'Stars' were maybe the worst offenders, just the most yawn-inducing music you'd probably hear at a shopping mall or an elevator or something. I understand this is meant to be background music, but it feels like it fell a bit *too* much into the background. Some solid loops here still, though, 'Bless My Soul' I certainly enjoyed a bit more than some of the other songs here. I liked the sort of dusty psychadelic quality it had. Had that vintage, uncanny Boards of Canada vibe to it, same with 'Cruise'. Not the worst thing on this list, but I just don't understand its placement here. Not in the slightest. There are many better albums in this alley.

Like a glorified version of being on hold

Why is this on the list? It's alright just a bit boring to listen to as its fades into the background. my biggest gripe: why the fuck is this thing so long. Over an hour of again, background music that doesn't really go anywhere interesting or expand on the initial ideas of the tracks all that well.. There's much better downtempo trip hop even on this list. It's inoffensive, just utterly mindless to listen to.

Old Sky TV Guide menu music again, but whilst Everything But The Girl at least had some lovely vocals providing an extra layer of depth, this fully drifted into peripheral listening and never really threatened to truly grab my attention. Not bad by any means, but wholly unremarkable.

Inconnu au bataillon. Vu l'imagerie et les couleurs, je m'étais attendu à du reggae, mais mes préjugés m'ont trompé, il s'agit plutôt d'un album de trip hop, autant dire, un genre que je ne connais absolument pas et c'est tant mieux, c'est l'une des raisons pour lesquelles je me penche sur cette liste après tout. Cela dit, j'ai pas trouvé ça foufou. Tu as vraiment des atmosphères très relax et posées, mais à écouter, c'est pas ultra-intéressant. Je pense que ça passe très bien en fond, mais sinon... Le truc, c'est qu'en plus, j'ai aucun souci avec de la musique très orientée sur les atmosphères. J'aime beaucoup l'ambient, mais la différence entre du Steve Roach et Nightmares On Wax, c'est que Steve Roach, ses sonorités, elles sont très travaillées et riches, même quand il fait des morceaux répétitifs de plus d'une heure. Mais bref, je tire des parallèles entre deux artistes qu'on n'ont pour ainsi dire rien à voir l'un avec l'autre, donc je vais arrêter là mes extrapolations douteuses. En vrai, j'ai pas passé un mauvais moment du tout, c'était plutôt agréable et y'a vraiment des sonorités que j'ai appréciées et des passages aux qualités hypnotiques vraiment cool, mais cet album aurait gagné à être 20-30 minutes plus court, il aurait été bien plus digeste.

Music to scratch your soles by after an exhausting day while having a long drink that's maybe a tad too sweet. It is a document of its time and there have certainly been more annoying entries from the Café Del Mar era than this one.

I can see why this record is included here. It's bringing in a lot of interesting influences into his production, ranging from funk and soul to reggae. At times, the downtempo music creates atmospheric moodiness, but other moments feel a little sterile. However, it gets brought into a loops oriented electronic music that feels like its designed for the background of a party that creates a vibe while largely being ignored. It's fine, but I probably won't listen to it again.

Nightmares On Wax make decent background music (my preference is for "Carboot Soul", the follow-up). However, experiencing background music is fundamentally passive, so this album really doesn't belong on a list you must HEAR. Drives you insane if you actually have to pay attention to it.

From the cover and title I was expecting a reggae or hip-hop album with a pretty obvious central focus. However it's a relaxed instrumental trip-hop/electronic album with a wonderfully mellow vibe. I much prefer this to the Orbital style, dancier electronic instrumental music, which I suppose says to me that my clubbing days are over. If I didn't already know that (I did already know that)

Listen, no judgement to anyone who enjoys getting high to this album but I truly pray that as you make your way through this challenge you find far better albums to light up to than this one.

It started with flashbacks of the smooth jazz my mother subjected me to as a child. It somehow got worse. Incredibly repetitive and worse, it was boring. I kept thinking something might happen in a song but the only thing that happened was my increased indifference. 128 days in and easily the worst album yet.

A chill stoner type album that lands well. Good flow states music. Definitely sounds like the 90s.

I always thought that chill-out tracks were created by looping parts of existing songs without the melody track. With that in mind, I find it a bit confusing that Nightmares On Wax’s “Smokers Delight” is being recommended to me as a full-length album. I have to admit that a few tracks on it do show some compositional skill. Still, the difference from my alarm clock’s ringtone wasn’t exactly obvious. Even if the sentence makes little sense out of context: disappointing, as expected.

I think it probably says something about me that I enjoy laid back, repetitive, dub based electronica like this and can't stand repetitive, 4-on-the-floor, dance based electronica.

Kinda record you throw on and go about your day around the house, forgetting its on. In a good way, I think.

I hated this. Honestly I didn’t enjoy a second of it. It just seemed to keep going on forever. To give it credit it’s not the worst album I’ve heard on here or anything but it absolutely was not for me.

Trip hop, ok, goes on and on

Trip-hop was such a cool and interesting movement in the 90's. One moment you could be listening to very dark and oppressive sounding pop songs like Portishead or Massive Attack, and the next moment you could be listening to background nothing-burger muzak such as this. You never really knew what you were going to get!

This is such a smooth, light, and relaxing album. While listening I felt chilled out, warm, and pleasantly floaty — the kind of record that puts you in a good mood without even trying. It’s groovy as hell with that perfect laid-back trip-hop/downtempo feel, but it also has this subtle spooky, almost eerie atmosphere floating underneath. That weird little contrast makes it really interesting. The beats are fat and bouncy, the basslines are deep, and the samples are chosen beautifully. It never gets boring — even at its most relaxed, there’s always something nice moving in the background. Smokers Delight is one of those records that feels both nostalgic and timeless. Smooth, groovy, a little spooky, and never dull. Really enjoyed every minute of it.

Was vaguely aware of Nightmares on Wax - but was expecting a more dubby / stoner vibe for private school reefer boys. Was therefore a bit surprised that its much more commercial/jazzy ambient and upbeat than was expecting. Its a perfectly pleasant background listen - but having listened to it twice I cannot recall a single song/ movement - its all very superficial and empty. Hardly a nightmare.

Smoker’s Delight Although this is from 95 it has more of a late 90s feel to me, reminding me of some of those easy/chill-out bands from the turn of the millennium, like Zero 7. On the whole this glides along very pleasantly, and it's very easy to listen to, especially while working. It occasionally drifts into slightly more interesting darker, gloomier trip hop territory, and while I think I would like a little more of that I don’t think ultimately that’s the vibe they were going for. For the most part it also sounds very good, but sometimes it shows its 90s hand a little, especially the guitar on something like Pipes Honour. It is looooong though, even without the bonus tracks. I’d definitely listen again, most likely when I need something to work to - although there are other albums that do that job I’d probably go to first - but I don’t think it quite reaches a 4. 🚬🚬🚬 Playlist submission: Bless My Soul

A semi-enjoyable, late-night album. Some dreamy basslines (take 'Wait a Minute' or the smashing 'Groove St', or the funky bass of 'Cruise (Don't Stop)') covered in shimmering synth, or the ambient 'Rise') engendering a relaxing mood. I've seen it noted as trip-hop, although it has less of the darker trip-hop undertones of Massive Attack (or the Portishead and Morcheeba debuts). It has more of a soulful gloss to it; over the course of 75 minutes it can drag somewhat - or alternatively be played as pleasantly inconsequential backing music.

This chill album is exactly what I needed today and I listened on repeat while I did some complicated accounting. I can’t say that any tracks, apart from track 1, particularly stand out but something I will Listen to a lot. 4

I like this a lot for smooth, trip-hoppy background music. It's like warm blanket all around you. But it's all samey. You could have gotten the same thing from Suno or some other AI generator with a prompt like "Give me a funky trip-hop background lo-fi vibe for my Rasta themed coffeeshop". I think you'd get something very similar. My Rating: 3/5

Wow, crazy. I just listened to this again the other day. I like A Space Outta Sound better. George Evelyn is a great dj. I can’t imagine people coming to this cold. I mean it is very easy listening, but rarely do I find people appreciate Evelyn as a dj unless they already know him as a dj. 4 stars. Boolean rating: yes. Glad I knew about Nightmares on Wax before I died.

This is the album that I have liked least by a long shot. At least other electronica stuff I’ve listened to has a danceable beat (Bjork, Fat Boy Slim) or is interesting (Suba). This is just boring and soulless

I can't believe I got this album on 4/20, it can't be coincidence right? Anyways, besides that fun little coincidence I have next to nothing to say about this album except complain about the runtime. How is an album that is basically just the same 30 second loop on repeat an hour and ten minutes long??? The songs aren't bad, but boy do they drag on... if every song was 1/2 the length and the album was only like 30 minutes or so I could see myself considering giving it a 4, but as is, one man can only take so much dub. Low 3.

While I'm sure it's good, I was not in the bad to sit through stoner music today. Maybe I'll revisit this another time. I got through four tracks before having to take a break as it all sounded too same-y to me. Not bad though. 3/5

I have enjoyed plenty of electronica and cannabis in my life, but there's a particular 90s style of unstructured, unmelodic, chill-out vibe based on weak drum patterns and random jazz samples that I find very tedious, and this is a prime example.

But not even that good - it sounds like background music for a cheap video game. This does nothing for me. I don't hate it at first, not bad to have on in the background while working, but it gets SO REPETITIVE. I can't imagine putting this on to actively listen to it. Not a genre I have any interest in, so perhaps unfair to judge it too harshly. For that reason I'll give it a 2.

Ive heard a bit of Nightmares on Wax before (carboot soul, etc). I pretty much got what I expected with this album. Groovy instrumentals are plenty, and there are no bad tracks that stand out to me. However, it lacks that x-factor that separates a great album from a good one. 3/5
