Reviews (page 4 of 7)

I'd never heard this album before, but it sounds like something I would have liked in the 1990s, when I was going through a bit of a chill-out/trip-hop phase, and then not listened to in 20 years. Then it would have come up on the generator and I'd be like "Blimey, Nightmares on Wax is on this list? I can see why I was into it at the time, I'm just surprised someone considered it one of the best albums ever made."

Incredibly boring! No offensive enough for a 2 I suppose. But man

Made decent background music, but way too long

Good easy listening. Nothing earth shattering with the beats and music.

Music to fall asleep to. Which isn’t an insult. I’m always looking for something new (to me) that I can wind down to

This mostly instrumental album was rather interesting. Sometimes the tone was mellow, yacht rock-esque or smooth jazz, or contain eastern influences. I can confidently report Smokers Delight was not boring. Trip hop can be hit or miss with me because I never do well with repetition. But I didn't hear many repetitive noises, and I really like that Nightmares On Wax didn't rely on the same boring sounds played over and over again.

This was an intriguing listen! Somewhere between jazz and trip hop, this album provided a unique soundscape that was easy to wrap the mind around and honestly pretty relaxing.

chill beats to study to

Ok I guess

I liked it

Chill lounge vibe. I liked it.

It's refreshing to listen to something else than 60s to 80s English rock to be honest. But what would be awesome is to listen to something different AND a tad more interesting. I can appreciate chill electronic music, but it's a bit too chill and once I was done, I could barely remember a thing from the record.

Very pleasant lofi chill beats

Ok never mind now that's two releases I've never heard of even in the slightest but I will chock it up to the fact that both acts are from the UK and this is a UK centralized list. So far I'm digging this. Not sure I'll be likely come back to it though. Probably the album which I have the very least to say about so far. Well, as a final note I'll say that detractors of this album seem to compare it to muzak and I don't find the description fair.

Chilled out but never filled out, Smokers Delight hardly approaches its shroomy album art, which has the fecund aspect of psychedelia gone right. Instead, this is the blunt hit that propels you from a steady high to a looped nightmare, the groove that stops grooving and's got you panicking b/c you want some color and fullness back in your life. It's not that I can't get down w/ music that's better in the background, it's that this is more like tasteless food for thought: I prefer my highs to unstick my brain rather than imprison it in savorless inertia. Some of the tracks succeed on their own, like 'Wait a Minute / Praying For A Jeepbeat,' 'Groove St.,' and 'Bless My Soul,' but this is a failure of a complete record, a thin clutter of boomeranging lethargy.

This could be menu music from Gran Turismo if it leaned more towards jazz. That's a good thing. 3.5?

Not what I expected form the name of the the album. Super chill. I’m giving this album 3*s. The album itself is ok for background music while doing other things. But I ended up listening to the associated songs Spotify played for about 3 hours after the album ended. I will be searching for more music like this.

It is pretty chill. Something that i can relax and listen to. Something that I can listen to while doing my work or cooking, but not something I am necessarily going to reach for when I am wanting to listen to music. If I owned it I would probably play it in the background while doing something else. It is pleasant enough and therefore gets the standard 3 stars.

Sweet! Some trip hop. I’m down for a little R&R. I’ve been put through the wringer by these albums quite a few times recently. Trip hop is a genre I like to think I know decent bit about, and it’s for this reason that I feel like I can confidently call it the musical equivalent of cotton candy. I enjoy listening to it from time to time, though I usually need to pair with something more sumptuous or else I’ll burn out quickly. Still. For what it is, it’s near-impossible to get trip-hop wrong, which is perhaps its most admirable characteristic. Yeah, I enjoyed hearing this one. It’s admittedly on the lower-tier of trip-hop albums with how dated the sound is, though it accomplishes the mission statement of being a relaxing listen from start to finish. For this, I shall spare Smokers Delight from my pedantic bitching about album lengths. That being said, there are quite a few moments in here where I lost interest. “Dreddoverboard” has a nice spacy ambience going for it, and I appreciate the guitar loop. Very catchy. “Pipes Honour” is a good follow up. The dead silence around the middle of the song is very gratifying, and I quite like the lead guitar. I’m picking up a little bit of a Jamaican influence on this album, which is surprisingly appropriate for trip-hop and pretty unique. “Tha Journey” is the next good track. I like the heavy percussion. “Rise” and its reprise are sweet late album tracks. I dig the rhythm of it, and I like the jingly sounds that appear near the end of the track are a good way of closing out the track. Book time. “...instrumental electronica laced with down-tempo hip-hop beats and samples from classic soul and R&B”. This album doesn’t seem to be all that popular and I can think of quite a few better trip-hop nominations, but I won’t quibble. Been a good while since I last listened to an oddball pick, and I always enjoy the sensation of cracking these kinds of albums open.

Like the XX’s first album, a deceptively electric opener paves the way for somewhat more generic fare.

chill instrumental beats to study to Tracks to Track: Nights Introlude

Pretty cool vibes album, nothing earth shattering but better than the cover and name would have u believe

Was hoping this would be atrocious so I could say something like that “what’s this guy smoking, oregano??” But it’s fine I guess, not really a huge fan of grooves or smoking weed tho

Very solid vibes. Unfortunately not really engaging enough for me to really consider listening again, and it's pretty lengthy... but I enjoyed my brief time in smokers delight.

I had a good time with this but it definitely over-stayed its welcome a fair bit. Not bad music to work to though!

Excellent vibes - I love this sort of dub-inflected downtempo music. However, an hour and fifteen minutes of it was a bit much for me. Probably would've fared better as background music with a fat doob - as is, my sober mind was satisfied much earlier.

Bumped to a 3 after consideration. I really don't find his thing to be very interesting but it did grow on me when I started listening again. I didnt even feel like it needed a second listen all the way through. It does feel like I am on the character select screen in a 90s Sega game. I have to put respect on it for being the foundation of some of my favorite albums.

This was pretty meh. I sort of just didn’t really notice it

I was skim reading a reference book throughout listening to the album and it worked nicely as unobtrusive background music. Only slightly feeling like it was dragging a bit by the end.

This was a nice listen, I don't think I'd heard of them before, but this would be something I'd put on when I'm walking about and not in a hurry. Laid back, chilled. Strong 3

I am going strong 3 for this. I could happily put together a playlist for Nightmares on Wax that is a strong 4. But over the course of 70 mins this album is slightly too relaxed for my tastes. I full understand that they are making trip hop albums that are very deliberately lounge - but I prefer the tracks that focus on hip hop elements to ambient jazz

It's the coolest and most sophisticated background music, but that's all it is. Luckily I have a very high tolerance for repetitive music that has no sense of development.

The clue is in the name of today’s album, this is for chilling out. Not great for a cycle to work, not great for actually getting work done, but a solid 3 raising to a 4 with the right circumstances

3.5 this album was at least 30 minutes too long. I enjoyed the songs but every single one went on way too long

Pleasant background music, but gets a bit dull by the end. Three stars.

Some groovy Electronica. Gets overly repetitive for too long in some tracks.

As far as background chill vibe music you might hear while boarding a Virgin Airlines flight in the mid-2000s goes, this is solid.

If you're having a doob with a mate, this is great, chilled out background music. In almost any other context though, it's way too one note, not something I'd ever just choose to listen to. Can't complain though, that's obviously what the album was made for, does it's job perfectly.

The cover makes this look like stoner rap or Bob Marley knockoff, when in reality it’s a tapestry for some kid’s dorm room. Literally an album meant to be listened to whilst smoking weed. In a weird way, a precursor to LoFi Girl.

Groovy, but highly repetitive. Not a smoker, so maybe that is why I did not find it as delightful.

I dug it, but I’llprobably never pick it back up.

Rambly grooves, not many vocals

Idk it’s quite nothing, doesn’t go as hard or feel as atmospheric as some trio hop stuff, and isn’t fast enough to be cool jungle stuff. Some of the samples are cool and also the synth bits, but it’s just really repetitive generally speaking. Favourite songs: stars, blessings my soul and probably some more I missed Overall around 5/10

Kinda ok, but a low 3.

Good background music but def not a must hear album

6/10 This is a bit of a funny album. To start with, I was really enjoying it, but I did feel it started to drift after the first few tracks. It’s very ronseal, in that it’s kind of the perfect music for the chill out room at a rave, a relaxed DJ set or an after party. Smokers delight indeed. I would happily have this album on now and then as background accompaniment, but I did have to keep skipping back while doing my song-by-song, because it frequently failed to cling onto my full attention. Some of the tracks really didn’t have enough variety to keep my mind fully engaged. Perhaps that’s partly the way my brain works, as I did have a similar complaint about overly repetitive motifs in Boy In Da Corner when we listened to that one. I suppose I’ll likely never stick this album on to just listen to it, and there are trip-hop albums that I certainly would do that with, but I can definitely see its place and it’s a very good album when placed in the right environment. A little hard to pick a rating for this one, but I think shooting somewhere down the middle is probably fair, and it’s getting 6 rather than 5 for that touch of nostalgia. Nights Introlude - A great little groove of a track that really sets the tone for the record. A good deal of this is sampled from Summer In The City by Quincy Jones, but NOW translates the vibe into something fresh. And the pads and strings that swell through sections are so 90s electronica. Dreaddoverboard - I used to run an electronica night at uni and played this one a lot. This has edges of dub, but sits firmly in the Trip-Hop wheelhouse (although NOW would disagree). The sections ebb and flow nicely, but there’s a nice drive that keeps the flow going throughout. Pipes Honour - A sparser arrangement here and a groove largely lifted from The Soul of a Black Man by Maceo Parker (legend). This is so chill and groovy. Me And You - Nice little interlude. Nothing special. Stars - Back to something more dub edged. This one’s a little too repetitive for me in places. The electric piano is a bit relentless. Wait A Minute / Praying For A Jeepbeat - Bit of a weird one. Just a sort of cluster of bits and pieces really. Groove Street - This is ok. A bit too repetitive and long, so got a bit boring. Time (To Listen) - Another interlude (Man) Tha Journey - This one’s definitely got more drive to it, but there are sections where I wanted it to throw in a bit more variety as it was getting a bit samey. Bless My Soul - A nice chilled groove. It’s not the most interesting, but it’s ok. Cruise (Don’t Stop) - A bit more variety and interest here. A nice bouncy beat and some of the samples add some nice lilt to the groove. Mission Venice - A nice, shorter track, The idea is decent, but it’s just very samey throughout, despite the dub mixing of the different parts. What I’m Feelin (Good) - This was better. Another short one, but it felt like there was just more variety to keep the momentum up. Rise - Another nice one. Not the most interesting of tunes, but a decent, relaxing little number. Rise (Reprise) - Not sure why we needed to have another 1:46 of the same track really. Gambia Via Vagator Beach - This just doesn’t really go anywhere. Too much like a hippy drumming circle in the park for me.

Not a bad album.

Synth with nice harmonies are plenty enough to get me to enjoy something, and this record is no exception. In fact, I was a little worried looking at the artist's name, album length, and presence of several interludes that this would be yet another bland 90s hip-hop record – but I was immediately and pleasantly surprised. Nights Introlude is smooth as heck, making itself a contender for strongest track right out the gate. The tracks are all in the tried-and-true form of "introduce an idea and repeat it relentlessly, adding and removing textural elements as you go". For the first half of the album, it works pretty well. But all good things must come to an end. Around the point of Bless My Soul, the tracks *really* start to drag. There's no intra-track progression, no sense of adventure, just one idea repeated for six or seven minutes with the occasional "yeah" or "uh" slapped in to give the passing appearance of an engaging track. ("These artificial disembodied are grooving to the song? I guess the song must be groovy!") Cruise (Don't Stop), apart from having Terraria-soundtrack-esque arpeggio synths at the beginning, falls victim to the same problem. There's just not enough interesting content. Give me a key change, a rhythm change, some song structure, anything! Mission Venice is a great change of pace towards the album's tail end – at just under 3 minutes, its clear-cut melody only gets a little repetitive, and there are multiple well-defined song sections. Definitely a top-3 track. Love the softer breakdown in the middle. Big fan of Rise and its reprise too; those chords are yummy (even if they're heavily looped). These two tracks should have closed the album instead of the almost objectively less interesting Gambia Via Vagator Beach. 3/5 Key tracks: Nights Introlude, Stars, Mission Venice

It's good if you want chillout music, but that makes it by design extremely background and just generally kind of fine.

Lo-fi beats to zone out to It's fine, it's good background music, but any time i try to engage with it i just slip off of it like I physically can't pay attention - I've listened to it several times now and if you put a gun to my head i wouldn't be able to tell you how the tracks go

Not as dislikeable as I thought it might be, fairly pleasant in the background, but not really my groove.

Chill listen

It was like hold music but better. It got a little repetitive, but I enjoyed it in the beginning.

Electronica feel

No me imaginaba en absoluto que tuviera este sonido basándome en la portada y el nombre. Realmente es iba música que me agrada mucho y que suena muy actual.

음 시대를 앞서간 앨범인가? 내귀엔 그냥..

I'll need to remember this album when I need to have background music on, but don't want to be distracted by it. I'm not sure "easy to forget it is even playing" is a ringing endorsement, but I didn't hate it.

Very atmospheric and groovy. However I don't take drugs anymore...

This is *very much* my type of record, and that’s exactly why I’m a bit let down by it. On paper, a chill, slowly paced downtempo electronic record with a huge hip-hop influence is right up my alley. I’ve historically been known to listen to Boiler Room sets, DJ mixtapes, and Lo-Fi Beats To Chill & Study To while I’m writing, working, or studying. While I don’t habitually partake in Ms. Mary’s activities more than 2 times per month on a bad month, I’m down with the general vibes associated with her practice. And like, Smokers Delight provides; it’s very well-crafted, has all the right touchstones, is a slow burn with detailed production quality, and is the perfect background ✨vibe✨ record, clearly being a huge influence on the Lo-Fi Beats to Study To™️ genre. Frankly, there’s nothing wrong here at all. It’s fine. But also, that’s kinda the thing…it’s only fine, there’s nothing here that really stands out and amazes you, it’s just exactly what you expect, nothing more. And like, that’s totally chill when you’re just flipping through records and need something new that isn’t too far off from your normal downtempo nighttime listens. If you’re putting together a catalog, this is a solid addition. But it’s farrrrr from the first thing I’d think of purchasing, and I would not say you should rush to find a copy. Everything on here has been done before, and better. I’m not saying I need innovation, but I do need a little substance and style. Smokers Delight has none of the former, and a skin-deep understanding of the latter that fills up the entire glass. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, and clearly, C’s get degrees and record deals. But this is like, a third-tier Warped release, a fourth-tier downtempo release, and a fifth-tier electronic music essential. That said, what I immediately picked up on was that Nightmares on Wax probably is a phenomenal DJ. And the old London Boiler Room makes that obvious. That’s because a good DJ can be more of a curator with little innovation, substance, or style of their own, as long as their set shows they appreciate those qualities in others. Smokers Delight doesn’t get the opportunity to showcase those skills. Instead, it’s a vibe, and maybe important to a specific electronic niche, but there are better versions of this that stick in my brain way more. But maybe I’m harsher on this because I knew what it could’ve been and was only met with what was the bare minimum for passing. Listen to his DJ sets instead.

Inte så pjåkigt faktiskt. Jag är förvånad själv. Jag trodde jag bara skulle rapa.

I really like this album cover. The music, less so. I love electronic music so at worst, I still like the stuff I wouldn't choose to listen to it again. This was just a little too one-note for me.

Warp Records is my favourite label, but for some reason this album has never really made an impression on me (apart from the wonderful 1st track). Possibly because it's a bit too polite for Warp. It's ideal background music, but nothing really sticks out apart from "Nights..."

sometimes i wonder if the dude who wrote this book actually listened to any of these records

Didn't know what to expect but this turned out to be really good. Good electronica of r changer )most have been crap no.564/1001

A decent listen with some fun samples. It's an album that most people wouldn't mind hearing, but not one people will love

Some good songs. Better for background than intentionally listening.

2-3 morceau vraiment chouettes sinon bof

sirve como música de fondo pero no le veo la gracia.

Unexpected. More chill than expected based on the name

First listen. Was not sure what to expect. Repetitive. Boring.

Chill ambient backround music. A bit repetitive, but over all pretty decent.

I thought this was going to be some kind of Snoop Dogg knock off but it's not that at all. I enjoyed to an extent, but it felt very much like background music. Much of it went in ear and out the other, but it filled that role pretty well. A lot of it sounds like PS2 menu music which gives it a bit of a nostalgic quality for me There's weirdly quite a few sounds that remind me of random, non-musical things. There's a sound (a guitar bend I think) that repeats on Bless My Soul that sounds like Lego Yoda dying so I had to write that one off, that's all I could think about. Cruise (Don't Stop) has a ping throughout it that sounds like the gates opening on the Glasgow subway which was kind of distracting too Decent. Also too long, unsurprisingly Highlights: Dreddoverboard, When I'm Feelin (Good)

Not what I expected. I felt like I was going to be suffering through a bass test track album but it turned out to be a really nice little ambient stoner piece. Relaxing and enjoyable enough.

Background music, but better than I was expecting going in.

Another lengthy one, it was ok no stand out tracks for me though

Yet another 90's album designed to be talked over at a coffee house

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background 3: Trippy and sprawling. Sounds great in small doses, a bit long when listening to the whole album. Great background music though.

I'm chillin. you chilllin?

Felt somewhat familiar and completely passed me by (but in a pleasant way)

Alright background music

Nice lounge music

Most generic trip hop album ever

Chill album

Chilled and groovy and pleasant. Not one to het excited about but in the tight mood it was lovely.

Solid background music. Too repetitive and too little there for active listening.

I get the vibe, I get why people dig it. But was not my mood for the day so only listened to half

Day 31 - not what I expected- nice sound but a little boring #musicsky #albumsky 3/5

Glorified hold music

Decent background music but otherwise not that interesting.

not what i thought it would be

Quite nice and generally I like this kind of music. But something is missing. There are no highlight, there is nothing special. It's like having a nice evening with somebody but then forgetting it very quickly because there is nothing to remember. I still give it a 3 since - as already mentioned - I like this kind of music.

Langt. Men fin arbejds musik uden lyrik. Der er passager som Pretty Lights må have napper fra.

Det er aldrig noget jeg kommer til selv ar sætte på. Men det var okay chill

While Smokers Delight is a good listen, there’s nothing that really pulls you in. The chilled-out beats and grooves make for great background music, but I guess that may have been the whole point. It’s smooth, laid-back, and easy to enjoy, but it never demands your attention.

"Smokers Delight" by Nightmares on Wax may lack lyrical content, as it is entirely instrumental, but this does not detract from its enjoyment. The album features a rich blend of electro, hip-hop, reggae, and soul, complemented by hints of Latin percussion and a touch of low-tempo funk. This is far from typical elevator or hold music. Instead, it serves as a musical backdrop, providing a soothing atmosphere while also offering enough rhythmic energy to keep you engaged. This album is an enjoyable and relaxing experience.

Listened Before? N Pretty good for wordless electronic stuff. I don't think I'm high enough to appreciate it. Seems kinda trippy in spots. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Nights Introlude

Pretty good background chillin music

Well, it does what it says on the tin: if I was smoking a cigarette and lounging on a balcony, I think this would be quite the pleasant experience. Unfortunately I listened to this in the middle of the hellish experience that is public transport, so effects may vary.

How to check if people read your book: 1) Put in an album that is clearly background music. 2) Explain very clearly in the book that it is good in the genre of hip-hop background music. 3) Watch as those who haven't read the book complain about it being background music that shouldn't be listened to actively. 4) Profit??? In all seriousness, it really is just that. Productivity music that fulfills its role nicely, but I have other music that works just as well. It's kinda funny though that a niche like this exists. "Oh no guests are coming over! What could I play to break the silence but not reveal too much about my personality or offend anyone? Ahah, perfect!" I guess this is how people did the lo-fi stream before the internet became ubiquitous.

works well as bg music 🙂‍↕️

super groovy and chill sampling with some odd choices that further build up the weirdness and relaxed nature

Easy listening, good background music, but wouldn’t be able to pick up a single track

Ok, so I'm not really the target market for this. I'm not a toker, a smoker or even a midnight joker., tho' I do like to chill with a mug o coffee. The album... yeah. It's OK. A couple of good grooves to it, but a load of filler too. Probably won't listen to it again.

This is the perfect album for sitting down and getting shit done. I put this on in my car and paused it after a few tracks because this is productivity music. Great beats, easy to concentrate to, non-distracting. Not for roadtrip sing-a-longs. I instantly recognized a sample from the first track. This feels like a classic, and I admit I had never listened before, though I've been familiar. I'll come back to this one in my work-from-home days in the future.

Not bad, just too long

An all instrumental electronic album, cool! Definitely something that should fit me. Sadly, it just wasn't interesting enough to really make a dent. It was great working to, and definitely evoked some nostalgic feeling (even though I've never heard the album before). It had some interesting songs here and there, like 'Night's Introlude', and 'Stars', for example. But overall it lacked depth and hooks to really make it stand out. It is quite similar to David Holmes' 'Let's Get Killed' album actually, but that at least had a whole story to it and was conceptually much more interesting and complete. This is just lounge music, really.

M'eh, pleasant enough, maybe if i were stoned.....

Instrumental hip hop always makes leaves me wanting something more. It’s all appetizers no main course. It just music for vibes, and that’s fine but am I about to seek this out? No.

Best Song: Mission Venice. Loved the saxophone(?) here. Worst Song: Time (To Listen). Technically not a song, but just an egregiously bad and noisy thing to insert into the middle of an otherwise chill album. Overall: Not sure what to say. Great for work/focus as it's really just a consistent groove, but it also isn't interesting enough that I could even feel like I could talk about the album having just listened to it.

Interesting, new to me.

Chillout but one of the 1001's? Why?

Had its moments but largely forgettable.

Very nice instrumental music. Could listen to it a lot, but only 3 stars because nothing really grabbed me about it.

I like a lot of ambient/background music, but couldn't get excited about this. Inoffensive.

it sure is.

This album starts strong with two great songs and then just kinda meanders for the next hour. Good background music

They say don’t judge a book by its cover (or album cover, or band name, or album name) for a reason. I really liked this album. Nice music to put on as I’m going about doing work around the house. Definitely putting this in rotation.

very chill but also not anything crazy great

How disappointing! I was hoping to like this album a lot more than I did, because it is of a genre that I enjoy. But I found it merely average.

Pretty vibey

stoners

Ganz nett :)

It’s not difficult listening, but not exciting either. I don’t want to rate it any lower because this would make for good party or work ambience I guess, and it didn’t bore me. Skillful and inoffensive.

Copado

The only time and place for this was 1995, on a Walkman, as you wandered grimy city streets in a stoned fug.

This probably would be fire if I was stoned. Alas, I am not.

Not bad, but just not bad.

Cool album, great background music at work

I like sample-based instrumental music, and that includes a ton of trip hop. But this isn't even my favorite trip hop record from 1995! I don't think this should be on the list if DJ Krush and DJ Spooky aren't on it.

I love me some trip-hop. This one is fine. But not anywhere near my top ten trip hop albums. I appreciate the production on this, though. I think Nightmare's 'Carboot Soul' ends up being a more enjoyable listen.

Is this trip-hop? It’s okay, made for good background noise. I did get a little bored and skipped around towards the end.

Liked this more than expected but probably wont come back to it much

Extremely chill, but never really interesting.

Not really interesting, but fine as background while doing some household chores

all smoke and no fire

Smokers Delight is the second studio album by Nightmares on Wax, originally released in 1995. This is some solid trip hop. I think each song does a good job at fitting into one another. Listening to the whole album is kinda an experience. I'm sure this would be great music to smoke to, as the title suggests. The jams were also very jazzy as well, which I enjoyed. The downtempo vibes are heavy with this one. Definitely one for late nights.

Chill vibes. A little spacey, a little jazzy, very much easy-listening. It feels designed to be listened to as background music but it’s nicely produced and pleasant throughout.

There are some really quality classic sounds on this record. Almost immediately I'm hit with some shakers + triangles + synths that are so often used and emulated in this sound that it feels like a painter taking your favorite colors and making their own thing with them. The 9 minute stoner droner track "Pipes Honour" was probably my favorite on the record. It's so repetitive but that's the whole purpose; put this album on after smoking weed and sit back and fade into the music. I'm glad that there is such an obvious expectation and it sufficiently meets that expectation for me. Nice album. I'll put it on again sometime when I'm in the proper headspace :)

Strange but I actually like this. Sounds like a nightclub theme I'd actually enjoy visiting.

Great background music while working.

Albumi #133, 13.12.2024 Vuonna 1995 ilmestynyt Smokers Delight osuu genreltään johonkin trip hopin ja downtempon välimaastoon. Kelpo teos.

In the elevator

It’s great that there is such such a diversity of styles on here. Perfect background music for cleaning or working. Not something I’d choose to listen to but easy enough on the ear. Reminds me a bit of those Café del Mar albums. Chill vibe. Just not dynamic enough for a four.

Way cooler than the Fatboy Slim album but less cool than Post Orgasmic Chill. Nice genre blending and patience in letting the tracks develop. "Heady" as the stoners say, I enjoyed it. But must add, dub reggae goes beyond this and always puts me in a more chill mood.

A chillaxing classic. Lo-fi hip-hop beats, melodica warblings and some dubby bass add up to something you can listen to if you're: (a) stoned (b) at an afterparty watching the sun come up after chewing your face off (c) doing some work. Or all 3 if you fancy. It kind of all morphs into one blob of sound but I guess that's kind of the point. Best Tracks: Nights Introlude; Wait a Minute/Praying for a Jeepbeat; Mission Venice

I've never heard of Nightmares on Wax, and I don't think I've ever heard anything by them (him?) either, so that's always a potential plus for this project. It's a bit long in the tooth, playtime-wise, but that almost seems intentional given that it's more of a groove sound than anything else (another potential entry for that long-ago "Music to Code By" curated internet-radio/playlist I listened to in the later 90s/early 00s). Some tracks remind me of a more mellow (and somewhat more monotonous) version of RJD2 (of "Ghostwriter" fame), others are a bit reminiscent of MC 900 Ft Jesus (without any lyrics). But a shame we won't be getting the contemporaneous "Furious Angels" album by Rob Dougan, with the incomparable "Clubbed to death" track of Matrix (movie) fame. It's always a bit hard (for me, at least) to rate ambience-oriented music as anything but a 3, largely because there's not really any virtuoso elements or a story or theme running throughout the songs (that I know of). Sorry for the wishy-washy, DJ EASE....

Excellent background music for working.

Immaculate vibes, unremarkable music. It's good but this kind of music is a dime a dozen these days, and while I would easily listen again, I don't think I will ever seek this out. Favorite track: "Mission Venice."

Hilariously I got this after UB40, so we go straight from Reefer Madness into this. Came out just in time for several people to play this in houses I would hang out in at uni. So of course I'm fond of it. This and Car boot Soul. That said, much of it is very samey and repetitive beats, like man the journey, which is playing as I type, but could be said of a few others. Feels designed for background, great for parties to talk over, not so great for any close listening. And considering the advanced aural sensitivity afforded to some 'smokers', that seems a shame. Other stuff like Nights Introlude and Stars are lovely though.

Good background music? Funky hotel lobby?

Pretty good for hyper focus music.

Good relaxing background music

3.6 great work music

Really excellent trip hop. Groovy mid-tempo loops with some nice stylistic diversity thrown in - dub, funk, rock, this has a lot of little surprises. Frequently background music at work.

groovy tunes

Didn’t do anything for me.

It's fine, wouldn't listen again 2.5

This was great. I can't believe it's nearly 30 years old, it sounds so fresh

Album was fine. A bunch of relaxing beats. I don’t know if I would put this on for many situations, but I wasn’t bad. 3/5 Might listen again

Didn’t hate this, but I’m certain I won’t turn it on again. It’s definitely interesting and kind of vibey. Though the vibes feels more like the menu screen of an early 2000s Xbox game than really something I want to spend a lot of time with. But it was cool, and for like 20 minutes it was nice to have on in the background. After 20 minutes, it kind of all sounded the same.

vaguely funky background music that is fine but not engaging

Chill, mellow, groovy, but felt neverending...

Lovely music to work to this. Unobtrusive but not repetitive or irritating, and I could concentrate. I recognised some of the beats and keys used in Nights Introlude. Thanks for making my work day go faster!

I like the mellow dub, reggae sound generally, but it's hard to give this higher than a 3 as it's just background music really. It was nice enough to have on while working though.

Hard to rate because I enjoyed it all the way but is more of a background ambient album than one you would actively listen to. Still cool though

Its cool. I didnt expect it to have no words but i was grooving to it. Solid album

Nights Introlude, Mission Venice

I don't know how to rate this one. It was much more .... subtle .... than I was expecting from an album with this title and cover art by a band with this name. Cannot judge this by any of those attributes. It was a nice dream. A little boring. Very long.

chill as hell

muzak for slightly edgy people

Listened on earphones while cleaning. I can definitely imagine getting really excited for this while high. Good to work to too (for me, listening while cleaning house), but to be honest I couldn’t wait till it ended about 45 minutes in.

i don't give a damn

Such a great album. First few tracks are dubious, but there are so many great ones toward the latter half. I recall hearing this first in about 2000 as it was one of the favorite bands of a friend of mine who always has the inside track on music! It's been in my rotation ever since. Songs of note for me are Man (The Journey) and Cruise (Don't Stop), and admittedly, a good bit of this album does now sound a little muzac-y, I still feel that NOW has their place in the portfolio. Great background music with some standout sounds.

I was really nervous this was just gonna be some reggae regurgitation and people saying "I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints, and then I smoke two more ..." Though super-dated, I was pleasantly surprised how mellow and chill most of the album sounded. I was successful in my ability to put this on, smoke two joints before I smoked two joints and then pass out.

chilled to this, very nice

nights introlude- 5 dreddoverboard- 4 pipes honor- 4. no reason for it to be 9 minutes me and you- 4 stars- 4 wait a minute- 5 groove street- 3 or 4 time to listen- who cares man tha journey- 4 bless my soul- 4 im done i barely registered that there was music playing

Very chill album. Fun beats.

Okay aber nicht überragend….6/10

more repetition. This one is more bearable than Fatboy Slim in that there's more organic music, but it's still too heavy on repetition.

Trip-Hop. Desconocía este álbum y autor. En la wiki la entrada es la típica de un disco cuyo mayor mérito es estar en esta lista. A pesar de todo eso el disco empieza bien y no está mal. Música de un tiempo que ya pasó.

Ok. Very ambient

Great background music for a party or for working. I will add this to my rotation for laid back parties.

Topp 1000 plata allra tíma? Já nei nei, en á köflum þægilegt og snoturt tíundatugar easy listening. Hef heyrt margt verra.

Sure whatever.

Some good beats.

Kinda a vibe

I read some of the reviews and a lot of people seem to be unhappy with this being background music. I don't really get that. There's definitely a place for music to have on while concentrating on something else or for when you just need to chill out a bit. This certainly isn't up there with the great ambient works of Eno or Aphex Twin, but it's pleasant enough and I'll add it to my rotation of chill out tunes.

Quickly turned into ambiance. Still enjoyable.

If I was on molly, walking the streets of Ibiza past midnight, this would probably slap.

Chill and I see where a lot of samples from that time came from.

Hieman pitkähkö platta, mut nautin kyllä tunnelmoinnista. 3.5/5

Funky, hippy, hoppy, and peppery, and entirely a vibe before a substance.

Cool, chill, nice album but long and a little meandering. Prob should revisit

6.5/10

Perhaps overusing the ride? Nah this one's ok - and has some fucking vigor and swing, unlike my favorite whipping boys the beta band or mylo. Still, if you're gonna do instrumental, vary it up a little bit or it becomes background music.

sick background music

If you need background music while you smoke fat dabs, then boy do I have the album for you

This is not my favorite Nightmares On Wax album but I do enjoy revisiting it. I feel like George Evelyn really honed his craft on Mind Elevation and In A Space Outta Sound, adding more sophistication, layers and variation but I get why this album always makes the top of many lists in the genre. Smokers Delight broke new ground in the lounge/trip hop world in 95. It’s his most consistent album, what you get at the top is what you get through out. Also it’s hard to deny this album makes for a good summer cook/smoke out choice or even a late night chill album. A great companion to Massive Attack, Portishead, Air, etc.

After listening to 160 albums, my first Wax Trax! record has popped up and I was surprised it was this album and not an album of Ministry, KMFDM, or Front 242, etc. but rather the acid jazz of Nightmares on Wax. I have seen some criticisms of this record being repetitive or on hold music, but it must be understood that this album was largely played in cool down rooms at raves (legal and illegal) and clubs, which were everywhere in England by 1995. They would have high intensity acts like Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers, and Prodigy in the main rooms, and the hours of pre-dawn you would find people in the chill/cool down room listening to acid jazz like this and by other bands to bring them down from the madness of the rave before they reintegrated into reality.

Trip Hop is a strange genre. Smokers Delight has a new age sound that I like but the trax are arrogantly long.

There's nothing offensive about this, it makes for pleasant-enough background music, but that's kind of all it is. Favorite track: "Rise"

Relaxing music, but I’m not gonna turn this on for ambient music. 2.6

It was ok

High Bryan will give this a four but sober. Bryan gives it a 3

Chill. The name makes sense, it seems like a good album to put on in the background if you want to get high and chill with friends. Not something I would want to devote my full attention to, but it's smooth enough to be good background music to something. I could definitely see myself coming back to this.

Ok but to long

This was alright. Recognized some samples from other DJs and hip hop albums from around the same time, like Far Ride to the Pharcyde. Not something I would listen to often in general, but it did make for a soothing drive home after a stressful day, so that ain't nothin'.

No strong feelings about this... it kind of disappeared into the background.

decent enough but too long and quite literally nothing interesting happens. reminds me a little of a few persona songs but without the charm. 5/10

Its chill I guess.

There are some decent grooves on here, but it really didn’t need to be so long

pretty good, not as good as I was initially expecting.

3.5 I wanted to like this more than I did. I love a good instrumental, but my favorite part is catching something so cool that I have to stop and restart the track to listen more closely. Not a ton of that here despite over an hour of runtime. As much as it pains me not to give a funky instrumental at least a 4, it was good but not great. Definitely saving Nights Introlude and Gambia Via Vagator Beach though.

Lounge, Instr. 1995 -> 3

This collection of repetitive trip hop isn't 'good' by my arbitrary standards - frankly, it is dull as ditchwater, whichever way you hold the prism up to the light. Yet I feel that we're back on 'music as function' territory - and on that basis, as a background to other activity, this isn't bad. One can speculate, given the Smokers Delight title and signifiers on the album artwork, what activity is suggested; but as the aural zest to a working day, this is fine. Some sounds even broke through - a breezy guitar line, the bubbling retro synth on 'What I'm Feelin (Good)' - it's quite pleasant. A gentlemanly three stars.

This is pretty wavy but with more parts I didn't enjoy than parts I did.

It’s fine I guess. 2.93 per track.

I went in dreading this by the name alone but it was quite a good listen. I'm not sure if I'd listen to it again so it's getting a 3.

3/5 Nice electronic music but nothing essential.

Nice background music

(Message to the people who made the original list even though they will never read this) I'm in full support of instrumental hip hop being on this list but why this pick specifically? You choose this over Donuts by JDilla one of the most influential hip hop albums of all time? You could of even choose one of the million instrumental compilations from MF Doom and that would of been more of a valid pick than this. Not even a bad record its just that its not an essential.

Pretty good

Awww, this is great. I love Nightmares on Wax, but somehow had never gone back as far as this album. Great way to spend my Tuesday morning.

I expected very little from this, given that pretty rough cover… but was pleasantly surprised! It really all sounds great. A good blend of cinematic, good rhythms and samples used. Easy to pick up and keep on for a long time… I went through the album twice before realizing it was done the first time. I could see this entering my rotation and occasionally challenging Nujabes’ Modal Soul for “the thing I put on when I want to get shit done.” Hard to get too excited about an album that was essentially fantastic background music, but there is more than meets the eye here! 3/5, good time was had.

Not what I was expecting

Veikeä - osa soundeista niin ysäriä kuin voi mikään olla. Kuuntelen varmasti vielä uudelleen.

bit long tho :/

Oh yeah, this is the chillness.

Only exposure to Nightmares on Wax was a Boiler Room set that a friend showed me eons ago in grad school. I remember enjoying it fine enough at the time, but studio vs. live DJ'ing are (often) two different arts. Album opens on a laid-back jazzy R&B tone with some noodling synth keys punctuated by some dusty snare, bells, and organ tones. I've definitely heard this sampled in other mixes before. Flips into a much moodier atmosphere on Dreddoverboard. Some plucked electronic key sounds sprinkle above a burbling bassline, along with a repeated vocal sample some horns and cheap snappy snare fills. This has just been filling the background space since I last focused. I will say that, although I enjoy downtempo of this nature, I rarely find it to be notable. I guess to a certain extent that is the point of the genre; when done well it is more about the atmosphere than anything else, but its hard to really distinguish. Yeah, honestly, this album is far longer than it has any right being. I was into it for about 3 tracks and then lost focus completely. I enjoy it for background working music, but would hardly consider it "great" standing on its own. This borders a 2-3 in my mind. Nudging to the right, because while it wasn't particularly engaging, it did set a productive mood.

The individual beats were very cool but got super repetitive in every song. Album got quite boring and almost a task to finish it.

Trip-hop is probably the most underrated genre of all time. Getting me excited for some Portishead that better be on here. There are some real solid beats on here and love the flow of it all. Went on a bit longer than I would've liked but still overall good stuff.

Trip-Hop am frühen Morgen war fast schon zuviel .. da half nur noch starker italienischer Kaffee. Ist dann ab Track 2 auch eher immer das gleiche.

It was a delight even not smoking

Decent electronic music and good vibe to relax and/or work.

File under: Chill, Cool, Funky, Boring and Irritating. This is one of those things that I *want* to like more than I do. I think I've listened to this album before. There are a few really great stand out tracks (Particularly "Nights Introlude," which I know Mr. Wax has done other versions of with lusher strings etc) but a lot of it washes over me and some of the sounds actively irritate me for some reason. I think what bugs me is that if you hear the best tracks, you might expect a lot more from the album but there is a lot of it that is just "meh". Having said all that, I'm going to listen to Car Boot Soul and see if that fares better...

Mellow, 90’s stoner classic….

I found this actually pretty good ambient/work music.

Está bueno pero no es algo que escucharía regularmente

Smoky atmospheric and overly long trip hop.

I was prepared to love this more than I did. Slid on by.

Better than expected. Enough jazz influences to keep it interesting.

An electronic album from 1995. Haven’t heard of it but going in with an open mind, quite like the pads as the album starts. Not bad but nothing special.

5/10 Pleasant enough. 3-6-2024

Perfect background music album

Pretty good. Good vibe, thanks. The next ones gunna be a fuckin doozy I can feel it…

Like most trip hop albums, some good songs but most last too long and there are too many tracks on here. Its actually one of the better ones though, despite not being great still.

mostly instrumental, mellow music. pretty nice for the most part

The album cover art and name gave me low expectations, however, this was better than expected.

This was enjoyable as background music, but not something I could really imagine listening to just on its own.

Great for chilling and smoking…

I dont know what this muzak-sounding background noise is, but it made for a relaxing drive. Nothing more to it, though. Maybe I would understand it more if I was smokin.

Chill but extremely repetitive. This doesn’t seem like it influences anyone or anything. Not sure why it belongs with the likes of Beck and Chemical Brothers.

perfect ambient / background music, not something I would listen to regularly but great for lifting up the mood a little while working

Very chill, groovy album that flows along smoothly. The mix is pristine and the songs great to vibe in the back. Standout tracks: Nights Introlude, Pipes Honour, Stars, (Man) Tha Journey, Cruise (Don't Stop), Rise, Gambia Via Vagator Beach 7 out of 10

chill background music. not much else to say 5.5/10

I had never heard of this group or this album. Pleasantly surprised. Nice vibe. Repetitive but that is not atypical with electronic music so not unexpected. Great background music.

Better than expected.

Enjoyed it but grew a little weary by the end. Long album!

Good bops. Great production. Groovy stuff and a strong 3

A good example of what trip hop can be, focusing on the influences across multiple genres and great beats. It's not exactly genre defining the way the heavyweights of trip hop (Massive Attack, Portishead, etc) are. What it does showcase is how well bedroom producers can put together a solid album of very chill music. It's more background music than anything and it's a bit repetitive but it's a good album for what it is.

It wasn't terrible kept me focused on my cleaning task.

I actually like elevator music, and this in particular, was pretty groovy.

This is a new one for me. Kind of a chill-out, hip-hop, DJ groove. Mostly instrumental. It was good for filling the room while I did stuff.

I liked, but didn't love it.

Soft, melodic, electronic

interesting vibe but well done

Very well made, it all sounds good, but I wasn’t into it. Many of the songs were far too repetitive and long. Great background music, but not much more than that. But on the plus side, it’s got one of the best album covers I’ve ever seen. That gives it an extra point. 6/10 Top 2: 1. Rise 2. Nights Introlude

It’s not the fault of the music that trip hop is the aural landscape of the coffee house, that it lands at the nexus of cool and inoffensive. To me, it’s the sound of putting too much effort into seeming effortless.

First listen. Good vibes.

Completely new to me, and I knew nothing about the trip-hop scene in Leeds, which apparently was a big thing. I liked it, but truthfully found it more like background music; if it was on in a bar while I was chatting to mates, I'd probably think it was brilliant, but it didn't sustain my interest in a more focused way. Quality, though.

I feel unkind classing it as aural wallpaper, but that’s just what it is; background to another activity IMO. Not a smoker so it didn’t delight, but it was pleasant to let it wash over me…

Literal background music, 2 star if actively listening and 4 star on background.

Groovy, trippy. Great chill vibe with old school flourishes. Mostly pretty enjoyable, but some of the songs are overly repetitive. The album would have benefited by removing a few songs. Fave Songs: Wait a Minute/Praying for a Jeepbeat, What I'm Feelin (Good), Nights Introlude, Pipes Honour, Stars, Dreddoverboard

The name, the cover, filled me with dread. This album is, however, a delight. I'm iffy on its inclusion on this list, but didn't mind listening all the way through, though admittedly on background while I worked.

Nice sounds

Chillest instrumental hip hop music ever Maybe a bit too chill to stay interesting I enjoyed it well enough while I played video games though lol, maybe that influenced my opinion

Cool vibe…dig it

Electrónica. Chill out.

какой-то не бесящий психодел, но слушать я это конечно НЕ буду

3.0 Through 1 listen I couldn't recommend a single song, like, "hey check this out" but I could have this album on in the background and enjoy it. I thought for sure by the name of the title and band it was going to be a weed rap album akin to Cypress Hill

Nice instrumental album to have in the background, does remind me of walking into a trendy cafe though. I lost interest in the back half.

Good as background music

Asskolli næs og chill. Ekki það sem ég bjóst við þegar ég sá myndina á coverinu.

An album I’d be convinced that came out much sooner. Well produced, though I think I’d delegate this to ‘background music’

So I surprisingly have seen this album cover before, but I never listened to it or even remembered the artist. So going in blind... I definitely see the appeal of this album, but it is NOT a go to for me. I think my ears almost fell off my head from all the bass. Definitely guilty of skipping a few songs and jumping around the album. But the style and influence is there, just not for me.

Nothing terribly striking and a bit repetitive, but I like it. Varied and interesting enough. I would probably listen to this if I was a passenger on a long car drive and I wanted to doze off. It's really intended as background music for a Summer afternoon on the back porch while grilling and getting high or buzzed.

These songs sound like a mix of the start up menu for an old gran turismo video game and songs played at an Amsterdam "coffee shop"and for that, it gets good reviews from me. Funky, jazz and reggae infused sounds are heard throughout and I found myself bobbing my head during my drive to work. Not sure how "influential" this album is in the grand scheme of things but its a good one to chill to. 3/5

Chill out. Sin más.

Chill, man. Probably sounded fresher when new - this sound has been done and done since. Not interesting enough for a four, but not bad at all.
