Reviews (page 11 of 11)

Some familiar songs. I thought the album was kinda slow, and the recordings were a little low quality.

Just the intro notes make me happy, "Blueberry Hill" is so classic and a Mt. Rushmore track for early rock & roll. I'd say the rest of the album is pretty vanilla and not all that compelling, but at the time it was probably a rocking album! The entire album was under 30 mins as each track us around 2 mins long. It was a table setter for what was coming in the late 50's and early 60's as rock & roll blossomed, so it has its place in history and was clearly influential. "Blueberry Hill" is still a great song, still instantly recognizable to the masses and heard in TV and movies. Not sure I'd include it in the T1001 but it has Honorable Mention status.

Not my cup of tea

just don't really see the point of listening to this

das ist so alte musik

I like Fats Domino. So Long is a great song. This was more of a compilation of songs by a great artists rather than an album. He obviously influenced every soul and rock and roll artist of the 20th century so for that I'm forever grateful.

Just ok,

Didn’t hate it

Enjoyable stuff

After listening to this, I'm feeling nostalgic for the innocent days of listening to Jimmy Saville's Old Record Club on Radio 2 on a Sunday afternoon. Luckily for me, this is the only Fats Mr Saville forced down my throat in my prepubescent years. But for its jolly tunes it gets a 2.

It was an okay album. It was nice to listen to but not a lot of these songs are going into the rotation

Maybe it's just the drag of time, but I don't think this album is essential to hear. There's a nice roll to his stuff, but it is all similar to other groups from the mid-50s. Maybe it was groundbreaking, but I wish there was more variety and length to the songs--I wonder if the songs were freer live ...

Like bad Chuck Berry

I get the significance. Just to date. But still fun songs

Fun look back. Not my first choice, but I can respect the significance

A legendary performer by all accounts, in my modern perspective a boring album. I understand that this era of early rock n roll was extremely important in the development of the sound, but it really doesn’t do much for me. Lyrically pretty empty, sonically it’s fine. Not something I’d ever go out of my way to listen to again. 2 stars.

2,4 1,7 1,8 2,2 1,5 1,8 -> 1,9

Meh, not my style. I like some of his stuff, but none of it was on this album.

This was OK. Unrateable even due to statute of limitations

Not my thing

Ok album, very generic old times blues. Nothing stood out to me and just felt like it was missing something. 4/10

Nothing interesting to see here. I get that Fats Domino is considered a legend by many. But this album isn't as good as I expected it to be. And it's also less than 30 mins long. There's better rock n' roll artists out there. 2 stars for "This is Fats Domino".

Short, all kinda sounded the same. Not bad but wouldn’t listen again

Ok. But not my thing

not available on spotify, typically means its a great album... not....

The television show “Happy Days” was filmed in the 1970’s but set in the 1950’s. It was a running gag on the show that whenever Richie Cunningham would “make it” with a girl (offscreen, of course), he’d appear in the next scene, bold as brass, singing Fats Domino’s version of “Blueberry Hill”. It was his way of celebrating what had just happened. His way of giving thanks for being happy, for having indulged in a rite of passage, and for simply being alive. https://youtu.be/o20YZ9B5BaQ?si=V5ceaCHJ4Rl1T7Tq That carrot-topped freak would stroll right past his mom and dad and little sister, walking bowlegged, reeking of sex, sticky love juices quickly drying on his be-freckled face, incubating a virulent case of the clap he’d just picked up in the backseat of his jalopy from Pinkie Tuscadero, with a shit-eating grin on his face and singing “Blueberry Hill.” That nasty little ginger sex fiend had no shame. Walking right up to his cornfed midwestern momma with her bouffant and her apron, doing a “I just blew a bitch’s back out and since this is the 1950’s she’s probably going to get pregnant and have to drop out of school and have the baby in secret in a dingy charity hospital in Chicago and give it up for adoption and slink back into town ten months later and say she was recovering from polio but everyone will know what really happened and she’ll never be employed in anything other than a service job and no one decent will marry her while I marry the bank president’s daughter and start working in his bank as a vice-president right out of Wisconsin University and turn her down for a loan to open a beauty shop fifteen years later because she doesn’t have an upstanding reputation even after all that time and she has this emptiness inside and never stops wondering if her baby is okay” touchdown celebration dance, singing “🎶I found my thrill, on Blueberry Hill🎶.”

Once again one of these albums one knows is historically important but one doesn't really like. How to vote. Well, I chose a two. Blueberry Hill is at least one song I can listen to again and again and which I have liked for decades. The other ones typical rock'n roll of the 50s where you really hear very clearly the movement from blues to the "new" form called rock'n roll.

not on spotify???

Fun to listen to, but not something I’ll be coming back to soon.

Fast-paced and blessedly short. I can see why people like this, but it's not for me.

Pretty fun, just not really my cup of tea

Youtube

Yep, seminal Also very much can be visualised as part of a Tom and Jerry soundtrack, so much pastiche

I wanted to like it because I enjoyed the Little Richard album a couple days ago so much. I did not like it.

Golden oldie

Loved it actually. But so many amazing records got a 3.

I’m sure it was groundbreaking at the time - quite pleasant now…

I’m sorry, it just bores me. 2.4/5

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” I think is the motto of this type of music. Each track is short and very similar to the previous 10 tracks. I like a bit of variety.

Blueberry Hill.

If this is Fats Domino, I guess I don't need to listen to more of him.

This album was a let down for me. The audio itself was choppy which likely made it hard for me to enjoy. High two star rating.

Usually I like old timey music but this one did nothing for me.

I'm sure this was exciting at the time but now sounds background.

Blueberry hill , very good and iconic. The rest of the album i found very samey.

Not available anywhere. But I know enough Fats D to rate him a 2.75

Had to listen to each song individually in order as couldn’t find the album…. Enjoyed reading up about Fats Domino and his impact….

Notable track: Blueberry Hill

puh - it sounds old, for me it‘s an oldie, but not a goldie :-)

Pleasant music nothing special not bad. Glad it was a fairly short album.

Yeah tiz fine Won't revisit High two

I liked the fact that the album was short and sweet.

Music from before my time. All songs very similar and out of date. Good jazz piano by The Fat Man (2.3*s)

Chillin with the Fat Man. Some catchy tunes. A little dated obviously but holds up if you want something to dance around the kitchen to. I prefer Fats over some of the other albums on the list from the era...2.45.

Sorry Fats, it wasn’t you it’s me…..not a fan of New Orleans’ jazz, rockabilly and the 50s more generally so I don’t think I was ever going to like this one

Didn’t actually listen bc I couldn’t find it on Spotify so I’m just gonna assume it’s a 2

I understand the romanticism of the era, but jeez Fats could you not get better musos. About the only that nearly got a response from me was the horns, but then they'd drift badly out of tune and the moment was gone

Thanks Antoine (Fats) Domino., your legacy is strong and valuable. It's not my delight, but it is others, and I'm pleased you are remembered fondly. Joyous plunking R&B, but so short and brief. 2 stars.

This sounded like the typical 50s album. It was nice but it was pretty much the same throughout all the songs.

Fats was a vibe! Very concise album that showed off Mr Domino’s many talents. Just not a go-to style of music for me!

Fats Domino, Derek & The Dominos, Phats & Small - think about it. 2.4

An artist at the cutting edge of rock 'n' roll in the 1950s, but, whilst fine, this doesn't have a huge appeal in 2024. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Blueberry Hill Date listened: 26/02/24

Another case where I'm sure he was great at the time, but it didn't do much for me listening to it 70 years later.

I can’t front, I know Fats Domino is a big deal and a huge influence on rock music as a whole, but this is grandpa music. Just not very interesting from a modern perspective. Best song: Blueberry Hill

Sure it’s good, sure he’s one of the greats. Doesn’t mean I want to listen to it.

Blueberry hill is really all you need to listen to

Only about half of these songs are available to stream online, but from what's available, it's just totally fine. Inoffensive and nothing remarkable.

Meh, I’m sure it was entertaining back in the day.

Belongs on this list, but no my thing.

It's fine? Kinda hard to listen to since half the songs were copyright blocked on Spotify lol

I respect the Fats Domino hustle and 50's music in general, it's just not for me. It's slow and boring.

I understand that 1001 albums is a lot of album so fillers are to be expected, but like . . . this is 1957 chief. Little Richards, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, his contemporaries were pumping out far more memorable material. There's a quality to his voice, but it's not something I would revisit. 4.35/10.

Boring and samey to me

I dunno man, I just cant feel it. Not really for me.

Das erste Lied ist gut. Die weiteren sind so La La.

13 is an unlucky number, and it appears that this day is probably the most... mixed reaction thus far. fats i've read is a great pianist, and his voice has a real nice tone and twang; i truly do feel like he could make some awesome stuff if he really wanted to. but unfortunately, this album is just not one of those great ones. typical typical typical rock from this time. half the songs sound the same to me. it's just... this isn't one i would recommend.

Not my jam. 2

DK - Beautiful sounding album, really amazing to get to the roots of where R&B merged and created rock & roll. So many stand out tracks at the start for me, my favorites being 1. Honey Chile 2. What's the reason for not pleasing you 3. La La However, this album does taper off slightly after the first six tracks, slightly losing steam and having some tracks feel pretty similar to others. Another album unfortunately with lots of portions missing off streaming. I appreciate the fact that it is a tight concise album (runtime of 31 mins with the bonus tracks). Fun little album, probably won't revisit any tracks except for the top 3. Rating - 2.5/5 // Aaron - As you would expect of a 50s album, the instrumentals are always on point and a pleasure to listen to, however, the overall songs weren't that enjoyable. While I can appreciate the obvious influence as a pioneer of sound Fats Domino has had, it would be disingenuous to rate this higher than I enjoyed it which is a 2/5. This woulda been a bop in the 50s though.

Nicht so meins

This was a really difficult album to find and listen to because it's not really an album, it's a compilation. And only half of it was available to me so that sucked. But this type of music is always fun and easy to listen to. He had a certain quality that makes his seem more special than the other artists like him.

This Is Fats Domino! is the third album by R&B pianist and vocalist Fats Domino. This is a rock 'n' roll album that sold 50,000 copies in just three months. I think this album is showing its age. The music and vocals sounded dated, and one can tell this album was produced during the early transition from blues rock to rock 'n' roll. It's not the same rock that were used to today.

Simple uplifting R&B of the 50s

I kind of like it conceptually (the vibes mostly), but it's really dated. >1957 must be the oldest album we've listened to Nope! It's Sinatra, ~1955 if I remember correctly. I remembered because it's the first album in the book

It was okay! Not rly my vibe tho.

classic blues but not really my thing

While Fats is a pioneer of the Rock genre, I can only appreciate its novelty.

Mysigt men lite daterat

I'm glad I listened, and I hear the greatness, but I'm not sure this changes anything.

Was he part of the Colgate Comedy Hour? What happened to the old lady's rooster? What a shame. 2/5, not really for me. It's good old timey big band jazz I guess? Didn't really do much for me.

Pari klassikkoakin matkassa.

An audio assault in terms of engineering, very repetitive after a while... It also makes me wonder what it would've sounded like had it been recorded & produced with today's equipment...

Maybe historically relevant but does not feel worthwhile as an independent listen.

wasn't to my taste really.

This definitely peaks with the first song, as the rest of the album is very bland proto-rock 'n' roll with no substance save for some nice instrumentals and surprises peppered throughout (the instrumental, the guitar in the final track, etc.). It certainly isn't a bad album, but considering this album is already confusing enough to track down what to listen to, it isn't really worth the end result.

this is fine

Production on it is so... old. Also was only 19mins for me which was a bit underwhelming.

I'm trying to come up with something more positive than 'some of the songs are good, and he wrote them way back then'. But that's it. Listening now, this is an incredibly pedestrian meander through some old rock 'n' roll songs that is as dated as you would expect. 2 / 5 stars.

Old school dance music, pretty low energy by today's standards.

its ok, but i'd never listen to it.

Historically important but not my cup of tea.

This is Fine.

Rock and roll 1957.. Pystyy ennalta arvata miltä kuullostaa uskomattoman geneerinen.. Aivan mitäänsanomaton mutta heh silti nautinnollinen..

simply too old, sounds like its coming out of a gramophone

While no doubt a pioneer for rock & roll, many of Fats Domino's songs are just fine. He plays it safe by playing a tried-and-true approach to songwriting, which is mostly inoffensive. Yeah, this is fine.

It's fine but a little too old-timey for me.

I thought I would hate this, but it's not that bad. I don't like it, but I understand why people do or did. Probably more did than do, because it sounds very outdated. There's a charm to it like to little kids drawing stick figures. Favorite song: Honey Chile.

if I was honest, I found this was unremarkable

Very one-note, interesting to hear how a lot of the progressions within blues have changed and how the cliches sounded at the time vs blues now.

Really annoying to have to go search these songs individually on YouTube. Which isn't Fats's fault, but didn't help with the enjoyment of the album. The songs were okay, I guess.

Bit dated now…

It was probably a great album once, but to my ears now it sounds kinda boring.

Not convinced. Good vocalist. Sounds I like. Play for Remy.

Not my everyday cup of tea, but it's cool

No my thing One good song that I liked

Some fun tracks, although half the songs are unavailable on Spotify for me.

Propulsive, but somewhat forgettable.

Couldn’t get away with this sadly. I really like this kind of music and have listened to and liked other things by FD, but this on a whole didn’t do much for me!

Great voice and knew a few songs. Didn't mind it but not really my thing. Probably wouldn't listen again

Non-christmas themed christmas music...

not really a fan

Not really what I wanted. Old blues. Not bad, but not really what I like.

I enjoy these old-timey songs so even if the songs get very same-y at some point I still enjoy the aesthetics/vibe of them

It's decent, just not really my style. I appreciate it more than I like it, if that makes sense.

Unlike wine or cheese... well, we'll leave it at that.

Pretty nice! "Blueberry Hill" is a classic, though "Honey Chile," "Reeling and Rocking," and "Blue Monday" are some other faves.

Yeahhhh I don’t get it.

i mean, apple music did not have

Very of it's time, but not something I can listen to.

Only half the album was on Spotify.

Too archaic (sound quality included) for me to appreciate in any other manner than the historical one.

The full album is not on Spotify, but I'm absolutely not a fan of this kind of music and I don't think the 6 missing tracks would have made a difference.

Hard to rate as Spotify doesn't have the whole album but it sounded good. I like Blueberry Hill from 12 monkeys

Wasn't impressed by his voice. I'm sure it was revolutionary at the time, but this 50s stuff I just can't get into.

I love Fats Domino just as much as anyone with functioning ears. The man deserves more love than he currently gets. That being said, albums weren't exactly where he focused his efforts. This collection of songs starts off pretty good, but the second half doesn't really stand on its own. I'd recommend the "Fats Domino Swings" album instead, which has all of his biggest and best hits (including "Ain't That A Shame"). Also, it's on spotify!

Well, historic album. Great piano playing but I wouldn't listen to it by choice

All tracks weren't available in spotify, at least in my country but for what i heard (8 tracks) there is nothing really special here.

Straight ahead blues rock n roll piano. Might have been ground breaking once, but now it's just well executed and sung big band 50s rock n roll.

One of those albums where I can 100% see why it's on here for historical significance. It's not a bad album by any stretch but it's also not terribly interesting in a "Seinfeld is unfunny" kind of way.

Super boppy and a very bluesy album overall. This style of music would have been a staple at numerous parties and events from the late 50s onwards. Best: Blueberry Hill Worst: The Fat Man's Hop Spotify did not have the entire album, had to resort to finding the songs on YouTube to complete my listen.

Look I love Blueberry Hill, sung along with this one. But the rest just sound the same...Sorry Chubby only 2 stars

Not my cup, but I recognize how big this must have been back then to have sold 65 million records.

fats domino

Enjoyed hearing some familiar melodies and definitely understand how this kind of artist built the foundation for pop music. Would like to explore this genre and style more- clearly a lot of vocal and instrumental talent is requires. That being said it is quite simple and paired back in today's standards so I probably will not revisit often.

Not my jam

Is this a best of? Fats Domino an important figure in rock and roll and listening to this was enjoyable, but only to a point and I say with a great deal of certainty that I will never revisit his album.

Fats greatest hits! What a treat! What a bastard treat.

Is this a best of? Fats Domino an important figure in rock and roll and listening to this was enjoyable, but only to a point and I say with a great deal of certainty that I will never revisit his album.

Interesting from a music history perspective but that's it.

All good songs but they all sound the same.

Quaint and bopping. I could imagine dancing to this in poodle skirt at a soda fountain. This is the album that “created rock and roll” right? I suppose it deserves more stars and credit for that, ahead of its time and stuff. “So Long” and “Blue Monday” were particularly Valium soft and slow and enjoyable. But ultimately rock has evolved so far beyond this it seems rudimentary.

It was fine

Couldn't get on with it even though there are classic songs on it.

my grandma use to sing me blueberry hill. not my kind of music, but it could be fun background listening.

Wasn't able to listen to the whole album since it wasn't available. Nonetheless, a fun little early R&B album but nothing that really stood out to me

Not bad, but not my style.

Meh jazz, didn’t really listen to all the songs

Couldn't get the whole album. This style of music as never done it for me.

early R&B/Jazz. cool to hear the roots, hard to get excited about this kind of music today though. sounds much the same as a lot of artists in this genre in this era

Rock'n'roll before rock'n'roll started rocking. Blueberry Hill being his signature song kinda says it all

No me apareció en Spotify no hay like

Good album.

Unfortunately, I was not a fan.

I’m sure this was groundbreaking in 1957 - but it really doesn’t connect with me at all

Me aburrí y no pude terminarlo

👎🏻

Not as intriguing as expected. Blah 1960s early crooner.

Not my era. This music is just silly. Obviously inspired by the environment this generation grew up in, post WWII when everything seemed to be on the up and up. No Cold War vibes just money, drink and women. Makes me feel sad.

i’m not going to listen to compilation albums

Not for me. 1/5

Ikke fundet

Also not for me

Säger mig ingenting. Etta

Half the album was greyed out and unavailable. I could hear "Blueberry Hill" in Richie Cunningham's voice.

My grandma probably would’ve really liked this if she wasn’t racist. Love you gma. However, not for me at all. It sounds old. It feels old. And I don’t like it.

Not british BUT that doesnt excuse it I dont vibe with 50s music

Blueberry Hill Blue Monday

No disrespect

That's not nice.

Couldn’t find album.

2 old for me bruh

Not my jam

I specifically didn't ask for Jazz/Soul/Funk. I feel bad for having to give a review...

No me gusta

Good mixing for that time, musical not outstanding

fun and funky but not really my thing. I can see its appeal but not my style. I really enjoyed Blueberry Hill

Just not for me, despite its historical significance. Just sounds like an old movie to me.

After about, oh, I don't know, 59 seconds, I feel like I've heard everything Fats Domino has ever recorded. Why would I endure an entire album?

Obese Domino, with the voice only a fat man could have, is ok compared to other music of the 50's. It feels a bit hokey but some catchy riffs here and there. Most songs sound the same, don't need to explore further.

Meh. Better than some of the 50s stuff we've heard but nothing special. I get that it was a different time in music but everything sounds so similar. There is little to differentiate it. Would have been down to chill with the fat man though. 1.05 stars

A delightful record that I would only listen to again if I start this project over again.

So Fats Domino is not Chubby Checker. I did not get to do the twist, and it ruined my day. One Star.

not my kind of music

1. blueburry hill - 2 2. honey chile - 1 3. uuhatz the reazon - 1 4. blue monday - 1.5 5. zo long - 1 6. la la - 1 7. going home - 1 8. mardi graz - 1

Fats wasn’t for me, Domino also wasn’t for me…

Meh... fyrir utan þetta eina verulega góða lag.

Pretty boring stuff, but at least the production is shitty.

You can hear that this album was recorded in the span of five years. There’s absolutely no cohesion musically or production wise. It says “Story of Soul” in the top right of the cover. I first read it as “Story of Sad”. I feel the latter is more appropriate.

Too heavy for me

Echt gedateerd

Boring

Couldn't access it on streaming.

album was not on apple music

not my cuppa tea ngl

An oldie but a…meh.

dont like this bruhv

Anyone who loves nothing more than winding down their window whilst driving and belting out whatever modern music they’re into at the time is really not going to dig this. He plays a trumpet...big deal! The music is so dated and not enjoyable at all. Remove it from this list please...for everyone’s sake.

Sorry Fats Domino, you win points for Blueberry Hill but it just ain't my scene. Good Fallout music, but I can't see myself ever listening to anything but the first track again.

Classic 50s bops.
