Solid rock

Rating: 3.1 There are some of the juiciest and tastiest riffs ever on this album. This version of Smoke on the Water is a lot more flaccid than what I remember. Overall, very good and right on the cusp of being an album I’d come back to.

I’ve always leaned more towards Led Zeppelin over these guys or Sabbath who were all contemporaries and key players in the early '70s hard rock and proto-metal scene. That’s not to say this is bad, ‘Machine Head’ is probably the best of the three Deep Purple entries on this list. It definitely gives off some Spinal Tap vibes, occasionally bordering on parody. But there’s also a surprising amount of chugging boogie that adds a cool twist, reminding me a bit of ZZ Top. Overall, it’s a good album—and if you’re into that blend of heavy prog and boogie rock then you’ll love this.

Favorite Song: Lazy

Hell yeah We Love To Ride mentioned! Detta är jag när jag tar hojen ut på motorvägen en söndagsmorgon Yeah okay I already know how to play this riff get some new material This album is low key ape-mode coded Damn how he reading the lyrics if he blind??

Fun album. I definitely recognized Highway Star and obviously Smoke on the water. This was my first time listening to a Deep Purple album all the way through. Very 1972, it felt very at the crossroads of psychedelic and classic rock. Something about it also reminded me of Queens of the Stone Age, so I wonder if there was any influence there. Good album, would listen to again, maybe, but nothing amazing. Solid 3.

I listened to this the other day while working. I can't remember a single moment of it. Can't have been that exciting.

This is the kind of dopey—literally and figuratively—hard rock my punk forefathers rebelled against in the '70s. You could call it clichéd, except this album helped establish those clichés! All that said, I've got no beef with this. It gets wanky and deeply silly ("Space Truckin'"), but the classics on here have endured for a reason.

A real QFM 96.3 classic here (Daddy Wags in the house). Thank you Ritchie Blackmore for your immortal contribution to beginner electric guitar lessons for dirtbag teenagers for over half a century now. Take it sleazy.

Recognized Smoke on the Water…at least the first chords lol. Dad rock that at least wasnt offensive to my ears. 6.5/10

It was an OK hard rock album from the early 70s. The issue is it’s a hard rock album from the early 70s which I think this genre lost its way. The standout for me is “Lazy”.

Not my style of rock but solid album and entertaining.

At turns I disliked and enjoyed the album. The lyrics are at times insanely bad, but the hooks are there. The jams are pretty cool--I think they made the right choice recording the album live(ish) even at the expense of having clean takes or having precise timing. Maybe gets to 3.5, but dropping as I probably would not buy the album.

5/10 - smoke on the water is so popular but the rest of the album is mid

Pretty fun to listen to. I remember learning to play smoke on the water when I was a little kid. Still doesn’t stand out much

not enough he’ll for hell yeah

Mennään vaikka kolmella, oli siellä seassa ihan kivojakin ralleja. En silti uudellaan viitsisi soitella.

This album is objectively good at what it is going for, I just did Not Want to Hear It today. I liked that it was under 40min.

listened to this ages ago highway star was my favorite song for a while pretty good album iirc

Not my type but pretty fun

Classic Rock. Bang your head.

Decent

Great riffs and vocals. Feels like it would have really stood out in 1972 alongside Sabbath and Zeppelin, although this is higher energy than either of those without feeling at all thrashy. Nice album, with lots of interesting instrumental parts.

Eh I mean it’s fine, but I never thought they were anything special.

Beavis and Butthead were not wrong about Smoke On The Water. Most recognizable guitar riff ever. Good album overall. Not one I'd listen to every day, but one that if it was on at a bar or something, it would be great background music. 2.93/5 stars = 3.

Not bad. Road trip kind of album. It was a fun listen. Had a heavy metal feel at times.

41 minutes - mostly a classic - Pictures from Home, Maybe I'm a Leo ♌️. Closing track disappointing.

3 might be too high but 2 feels low

The guitar riffs. So many riffs. Long complex riffs every song.

For what it is, it is elite. Have never really been into it that much though. 3.5/5

Deep Purple

Solos de guitarra molt top, i hi ha algunes cançons que me sonen. Es metal, per tant no es un estil que me matí, però s'ha de reconèixer es talent. Preferida: smoke on the water. *Curiositats: aquest va ser gravat amb un estudi mòbil, lo qual els permetia captar la seva essència damunt l'escenari.

🎧Smoke on the Water…the most recognizable and enduring rock riff ever? Maybe. It’s one you love as a kid and then over time and thousands of exposure come to despise or just tire of. But this is a fine hard rock album that I really can’t hate on. Favorite tracks: Highway Star, Lazy

Fine. Didnt pack the punch I was expecting from a band trailblazing the hard rock scene

Rock (Pun Intended) Solid 70's metal album

Space trucking er en objektiv banger... Resten er det meh.

Decent, I'd listen to it again

No dobra dam cztery, bo Smoke on the water to hit plus doceniam zespół rockowy, który nie zmienia jednego kawałka w godzinną epopeję. 6.5/10 równane w górę.

I can tell this is the seeds of hard rock and heavy metal. It was enjoyable enough with their most famous song on the album (Smoke on the Water). I may revisit in the future but there was nothing about this that spoke as artistic genius that I would need to revisit multiple times. Fine fun album. Good for a day at the cabin.

Don't remember much but I did generally like the sound. 3 star.

It's not hard to imagine the tandem of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath contributing much of what heavy metal would end up being down the road. It's definitely something I can appreciate, but I think I still prefer the stuff that stood on their respective shoulders. Favourite Track: Highway Star 3/5

Also not my favorite kind of music typically. I’m more of a classic rock type of person. But I have to give this album credit for having one of the most recognizable songs of its era on it, for sure.

This album failed to catch my attention, it was just noise. Not bad noise, but I won't remember it.

Slaps. Boomercore. Crazy riffage. Clearly influential. Wolfmother should be ashamed of themselves.

Bluesy, rolling guitar sound, funky keyboards. These guys are a less dark version of Black Sabbath. Or Black Sabbath is a heavier version of these guys. It’s jammy. This is a good album for wordless scenes in a movie or for background music in a video game when you’re driving a vehicle. Choice cut: Smoke on the Water

For the genre of music which definitely is more suited personally, this album certainly left for wanting more. It will be a 3.5/5 but demoted to 3 as it wouldn't really belong in the echelon of 4s.

Thought it would be better. 3/5.

This was fine? It was fine to have on I the background but any time I tried to actively listen, I got distracted by other things.

It starts meh and finishes quite good.

reminded me of steely dan a bit

Yeah this was kinda fun. Unfortunately I am so numb to 70s rock I won't be dwelling on it, but I liked the guitar 🎸

one of my (imaginary) friend that only knows "smoke on the water" listened to this album with me and shouted at the beginning of the song "it's 0-3-5 time" and smoke on the water'd all over the place. the only problem, however, was how we are not listening to"highway star" on a highway. 3.5/5

Bits of delight laced throughout, but something cheesy or false pervades. Overall, not really my jam

- I respect their influence, but Deep Purple rarely does much for me. Too much keyboard. And it lacks an edge I keep wanting from it, especially because they keep skirting that line. - "Never Before" is my favorite, but there are some other solid tracks. - Do not care for "Maybe I'm a Leo" and "Lazy."

Classic album, but just because Smoke On The Water is actually kinda boring, I'm not such a fan.

Deep Purple – Machine Head (★★★☆☆) As a Gen X guy who grew up with rock blasting out of car stereos and bedroom speakers, Machine Head was one of those albums everyone had—or at least knew. It’s a classic, no doubt, with “Smoke on the Water” and “Space Truckin’” leading the charge. “Smoke on the Water” especially… that riff is legendary. Every budding guitarist’s first real lick. You still hear it in Guitar Centers across the country. But honestly? It’s been played to death. It’s time to let that one fade into the background and make room for something new. The magic it once had is long gone. The album as a whole still rocks, but it doesn’t hit quite like it used to. Solid, but not mind-blowing. A classic, sure—but not a personal favorite anymore.

It was good. It was a generic classic rock album. I feel like there’s a reason I only know smoke on the water… but they sound good and I liked it! Just a average generic sound

3 stars just for Smoke on the water

Based on Smoke on the Water I expected this to be a lot harder overall but it was pretty mellow besides Space Truckin. Not bad but pretty mainstream, think a little more rock would have pushed it up a start

TIL the story of Smoke on the Water, fascinating! I had no idea what that song was about, turns out it’s just a very literal story of what happened to the venue they were supposed to record at. I like the last three songs of this album the best. It’s not an album I’d just decide to put on, it’s not totally my thing, but I appreciate their influence on rock and heavy metal. Very classic!

70’s southern rock vibe

Deep purple is pretty silly, but this is a fun album that tends to make me smile, even if they're are a few misses in there.

Solid first and solid last few songs. The middle part was less interesting though bumping my score down.

It's hard to believe that there are so many classics on this short album. Favourite Track(s): Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Lazy Least Favourite Track(s): Never Before

Solid 3,5 in my eyes, giving it 3 stars just because of chance.

Ikke helt min greie.

Proto narvermusikk. Det er fete låter, men jeg har alltid kjent på at Deep Purple er litt kjedelig. Highway Star er fet da.

This reminds me, I'm late for my appointment to steal a convertible and drive way too fast outta town with nothing but a smokin' babe at my side and a bag of viagra and cocaine. Don't let me forget my beer.

Really thought they would give us MORE. However, I can appreciate one of those albums that is classic rock for zoning out while driving. 3

Pätevää tilutusta

Strange album – I hate the first half but quite like the second half.

Oh hey, it's the song from Rock and Roll Racing. I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Before today I considered Deep Purple a one hit wonder with "Smoke on the Water." Surprisingly "Highway Star" is the standout track for me.

Decent fun, my favorite of the Deep Purple I've gotten so far Rating: 3.4

I'd say 3.5

Also solid but not super memorable overall. Liked this better than the other deep purple album though! Real fun like 3.5

this was like basic dad rock wtf

Happ, min tur att vara contrarian! Var väl rätt bra men inget märkvärdigt.

This is primo 70's classic rock but pretty meandering and forgettable beyond "Highway Star," " Smoke on the Water," and "Space Truckin'" Felt like I should be listening on 8 track

Classic album. Not entirely my taste.

If you're a dad of a 16-year old in 1973, and you hear this coming out of the hi-fi in his bedroom, you should definitely look through his shit while he's at school.

0 3 5 0 3 6 5 You know what you did deep purple, you know what you did.

It's classic heavy rock and all, but really it's kind of cringe if you think of it from a 21st century perspective.

Have it on vinyl so was nice to listen to that way. Highway Star is a classic and you can hear the inspiration of every Motley Crue song in there. You all know Smoke in the Water too. The rest of the album just doesn't do it as much.

Kinda cheesy 70's hard rock album, but when a better track off it hits a good groove I can't help but nod along. Standouts: Highway Star, Space Truckin', Lazy

Meh. Was surprised to have a second Deep Purple LP this early on. I hope there isn't a third. It's not that it's 'bad' per se, just a little...dull? The musicianship is great, but not as impressive as the likes of Van Halen would become, or as soulful as their predecessors The lyrics are fairly dull. Highway Star, Smoke on the Water and Space Trucking are at least kinda fun bops, but nothing really blew me away. A straight down the middle 3 stars.

. Highway star seems overrated to me, fun song but way to muddy production. In fact the first three tracks production seems kind of off compared to the very good production of the later tracks, stereo field of never before is very good, same for Lazy. Smoke on the water is just a classic fun song. Lazy absolutely slaps, best song on the album. Space trucking is also very fun, I like the production on it and the drums go hard on it. When a blind man cries is a lovely slower bluesy song. Quite nice. Overall i'd give the album a 7. It has some very good moments. Nothing too special or amazing, just quite enjoyable. Ofcourse it's influence cannot be understated.

At the time of it’s release I can see how this album could have really inspired others to write heavy music but I don’t feel like the album has aged well and it’s rather boring in todays music.

Enjoyable listen and a time warm. I don't think its turned me into a huge fan but there are some songs i liked.

A good listen

Space Truckin’ is a perfect capper for this album because it sums up the whole experience — deeply goofy but undeniably rocking.

Smoke on the water is goated

Smoke on the water is a classic.

At first listen, it felt energetic and very powerful rock / proto metal. But with more and more listens, it became a little bland and boring.

Surprisingly good album that I wasn't expecting. "Pictures of Home" is kinda metal, and I'm into it. "Smoke on the Water" is a classic, of course, and this album is relatively short (love that about 70's rock albums). This is a case where I wish that there were half star ratings. 4 seems a bit generous but 3 feels too low.

I respect the inclusion of an organ, especially when stuff gets "heavier." The fact that this is from 1972 and not, say, 1976 gives it a pretty good lift, but it's still dad rock that feels kind of ur- and underevolved at this point. It's a little bit like AC/DC in that it's too long and kinda all sounds the same but less balls to the wall. Credit due for Smoke on the Water and Highway Star, despite the latter being twice as long as it needs to be. Pretty long 37 minutes, but I don't hate it.

I wanted to like this since they are so influential, but ultimately I found it to be 70's muscle car music that was ok.

Not awful but probably not something I will listen to much. The hits are hits for a reason

When I saw this was today’s album, I did groan and was completely unexcited by the prospect, although it wasn’t as bad an experience as I thought. However, when it got to Smoke on the Water, it reminded me of a record I’ve not heard in over 40 years. Which was fabulous because I went on a trail to find a particular cover version and subsequently the album it was on. Some may say it’s sacrilegious, but there are definitely some cover versions that are better than the original. I hold up John Cale’s version of Heartbreak Hotel, Patti Smith’s Hey Joe and Dope on the Water by Nash the Slash. That is not a joke or a typo. His 1981 album Children of the Night was a favourite for a couple of years and then I completely forgot about it. Until now! So for the excellent reason of reminding me about Nash the Slash, I wholeheartedly approve of today’s choice. I didn’t always like the Deep Purple sound but When a blind man’ cries was a poignant end. And Smoke on the Water was a great reminder. I now encourage you to go and seek out the Children of the Night album.

I'll confess I didn't give this one a close listen (too busy), though i've heard many of these tracks over the years. These guys never really did it for me, but there's no hate.

Very nice

Rock highlight, an album which made them famous.

I've already had Deep Purple's live album, Made in Japan, which took some decent tunes and stretched them out to breaking point with endless solos. This still has a bit too much noodling for my personal taste, but it keeps it to more acceptable levels.

7.4/10

até que gostei, mas rock realmente nao é meu forte

Somewhat disappointed to learn the lyric is Space Truckin rather than Space Turkey. More old guy sweaty riff rock; I grew up on Queen so this is both more simply energetic like a MAN SWINGING AN AXE but as equally thoughtless and simple. I can appreciate it, and there's definitely moments on here where it's got astonishing intertia, but it's not my bag.

Sorry men deher far noo ti gubbrock kategorin. Gar ti hör på men lömnar int na avtryck.

Of course a classic of classics. Just not my fav.

Definite sense of drama and occasion - the album tees up Smoke on the Water. Beautiful guitar work from Blackmore.

Pretty fun if you listen inbetween the hits. Peak dad rock. 60/100

Solid rock with a bit of jam band thrown in.

Good sound that became repetitive.

Some good songs, a lot of ok songs, basically how I feel about all rock albums at this point.

Infantile to the extreme

the best tribute the muppets could have hoped for

RååååKKKKK RÅKKRÅKKRÅKKNROLLLL. Seriously though, it's decent album, with a legendary track or two, but I never understood this band very much.

Positively susprised. Groovier than anticipated stuff. E.g., Lazy as an example. The many radio stations out there have ruined Smoke on the Water for me, but there are other bright spots here.

Typ den mest klassiska rock som finns, i mina öron. Diggade när jag var mindre. Men det är rätt meh, det är inget som får en att jubla av glädje.

I guess it's good air guitar music

Smoke on the Water is an iconic song, but the rest of the album is just ok.

I think this album was considered "classic rock" the day it was released. Favorite track: Smoke on the Water 3.5/5

I liked it .. but deducted a star for excessive guitar solos and unnecessary fade-outs 😀

Pretty rockin but I’m not sure it holds up. Sounds pretty dated in a way that Led Zeppelin, for instance, doesn’t.

Lots of self jerking solos, but I didn’t hate the album overall. I was immediately drawn to the mix and tones of the guitars in the first track, And I liked the songs, but if they cut those solos I think I would bump this up another star

I feel like I am getting more critical. I did target a Deep Purple themed peloton ride after this one.

I've heard worse. Probably decent for the era in moving towards heavier and kerrangier rock but doesn't really hit like other stuff from back then.

3,5 rigtig good shit. Der er nogle klassikere på og de har inspireret folk som iron maiden, Metallica, Van halen osv. all around svært at hade det hvis man bare kan lide rock en smule. Progressive rock

Pure classic

Exuberant, if not super interesting. The last 3 tracks really stand out on this album. I understand this is early metal. I recently had Black Sabbath, and this band is not at their level, but still enjoyable

I’m a little disappointed by this one. I like me some classic 70s rock sometimes so I thought I’d really enjoy it, but I found it a bit…dull? There are some iconic riffs (Smoke On The Water obviously, but there’s some lesser known gems on here too) but by the end I was just sort of waiting for it to finish.

kind of stupid. kind of fun

se ascolto un’altra canzone divento un settantenne con beer belly

Decent album.

Das letzte Lied ist mein Highlight

BAA BAA BAAAAA BA BA BADAAAAAAA

I think this was the first time I listened to more than 10 seconds of Smoke On The Water. Standard rock album.

Good album.

I wasn't in the mood for this album, even though I could appreciate the musicianship

This was much proggier than I expected. They really like their jams. There were many many moments I liked on Machine Head, but not really any songs I liked. Listening to this stuck in traffic, I really understood why the punks wanted to strip away all the self indulgence of this type of rock. I appreciate this as a major influence on later music that I love, and Ritchie Blackmore's playing always wows me, but this is just not my vibe. Album cover: (C+) Now that's just silly.

nasty nasty nasty album

Nostalgic. 3

Yeah pretty solid rock album. Smoke on the Water is iconic but the rest of the album is mostly just solid but doesn’t really stand out.

I thought deep purple were a bit of a joke tbh. But some of these riffs and interplay between the different instruments are tight af

Live in Japan is the biggest pile of horse shit even put to vinyl. This, however i think we can all agree, rocks

A strong 3 - some good tunes - sadly Smoke on the Waters impact is much diminished due to over familiarity. Would not rush back - but nothing made my ears bleed.

Overall, I do find the hard-rock tropes are mitigated by some really soulful guitar playing and effective riffs, which elevate this above the likes of the one-trick ponies Motorhead, or the soft-rock of Iron Maiden and co. 'Maybe I'm a Leo' a good example - dull power-chords but into a pretty solid Cream-type blues rock riff. And so it is with 'Pictures of Home' and 'Never Before'. The 'Smoke' riff is a classic for any guitarist - mainly because it's easy to play. It feels stately in its slower tempo. The song doesn't get lost to tiresome ubiquity - the narrative about the Montreux casino burning down, alongside the vivid lyrical imagery and cool band references, is involving and evocative. Rightly a classic. I thought it a very solid album with some nice touches.

Not great, but enjoyable.

The second song is way too redundant and I think that most of the album is redundant like all the songs are built the same way. I feel like I'm not surprised by anything in this album after listening to one song, you get the mood, a cool mood but boring sometimes even if in some songs you have some great guitar solo like in "Pictures Of Home" or in "Never Before". Usually I don't like classic/mainstream rock bangers from the 70s but "Smoke On The Water" stands out from the crowd, the guitar riff is insaaaane and like I would have loved to listen to it in a concert. I'd like to apologize for saying that the whole album is redundant "Lazy" is incredibly insane, the intro is a masterclass, I think that the song coud have stayed without any lyrics because that part isn't as good as it was during the first 4min. But this song also gave me more of a groovy rock song and not a hard rock song. Special Mention to "When A Blind Man Cries", the slowest song of the album, there was more depth in this song, I usually don't really care about the lyrics but this one hitted me and I got stuck into it. Sad that they didn't make any other songs from this album more into this vibe. To conclude, the musicians are talented that's for sure but as I said way too redundant especially for the first songs but then 3 of them are absolutely insane and make this album better.

Smoke on the water is a stand out. The rest of the album is good but not great to my ear.

Now That’s What I Call Dad Rock Volume 72 Highlights include: “Smoke on the Water” “Lazy” and “Space Truckin’”

Pretty good album but honestly forgettable other than a few classics.

I have always heard this album was hype and boy did it live up to the hype. All of the hits I've heard over the years are bangers and the rest of the album holds up great too. The first 5 star from me

Three of the best deep purple songs on one record. This is pretty good despite my distaste for endless noodling on songs (tbf they kept it pretty tame compared to Made In Japan) Enjoyable for the most part.

It's got two big hits here with Highway Star and Smoke on the Water and that justifies its appearance on this list. Otherwise, all the other songs are fine to good but never amazing. Nothing to dislike, but nothing I'd return to in the future. 20/01/25

Quitando las 2 canciones conocidas del discos me ha parecido bastante blandito, salvado por su corta duración y porque con los años me he acostumbrado a escuchar la música de Deep Purple gracias a Rock FM. Canción destacada: Highway Star

Nice and rocking

In my head Deep Purple and in particular the riff for Smoke on the water are better than they actually are! I found this a bit plodding and slow. In mitigation it is 53 years old and blazed a trail for acts to come.

Good. Kinda background music. Probably really good if you're into this stuff but it just didn't really do anything for me. I just felt like I was listening to classic rock.

Smoke on the water is their famous song but some other solid metal songs/guitar riffs

Highway Star

If it comes on I’ll listen to it but I won’t go out of my way to put them on.

“smoke on the water” is such a classic

Machine Head is pretty standard classic rock. Smoke on the Water, like everyone else was the first riff I learnt to play. But nothing on this album truly stands out. It’s good but standard 6.3/10

Funky head banger

Not bad. I wanted it to be just a bit better to get to a 4, but it fell short.

The Good: Machine Head is an awesome song by Busch! The Bad: This isn’t a Bush album… The Ugly: Realizing that Deep Purple, DP, is NOT a reference to a sexual act… What a treat this album has turned out to be… and to think that this is the second DP album that I’ve been presented on this here voyage. The musicianship on the album is excellent, the songs are great, the solos are delightful… and yet, no 5* because I need to be a little more critical… and I wish that the rating would be between zero and 10 stars… then this album would get a solid 7* For now, here is the undeserved 3* because it should be 4*, but that is what I gave Ray Charles’s album yesterday, and that wouldn’t be fair...

Fine but a little boring. I like the crunchy guitar sounds.

I like the smoke in the air song; that's a classic. But overall, it's not my type of music.

I'm having a hard time deciding if this is a smart record pretending to be stupid, or a stupid album pretending to be smart, I think my gut is that it's the former. Some genuinely inspired arrangement choices and some virtuosic playing all around, coexisting with gobs of braindead blues rock and lead-poisoned lyrics about how sexy ladies are like sports cars. Highway Star is kind of an encompassing summary of the album in that way. The verses are dull monotonous melodies centered around the tonic while the rhythm guitar is doing neanderthal chugging underneath, and yet the chorus always feels so weird and off-balance. It's always a measure shorter than we'd expect, and the band always rushes slightly while going through the syncopations. And then there's Richie Blackmore's weird cascading scale exercise of a solo that works in what sounded like harmonic minor? This might be the first album I've ever listened to where my inclination is to just fast-forward to all of the guitar solos. "Maybe I'm a Leo" is by a good margin the worst song on the album, the most listless and unimaginative blues in the history of the British isles. The whole song is just every instrument clomping around heavily around minor pentatonic scales, no attempts at venturing away from the most generic bar blues-rock ever generated on earth. Give pat boone several sedatives and he'd still come up with a more visceral and compelling blues than this. My hot take on smoke on the water? The riff might be the worst part of the song. Honestly the verses here are brilliant, that free wheeling bass part works so well against the vocal melody, and the drum fills here are absolutely sick. Love the call and response chorus between vocals and lead guitar. Another corker of a guitar solo on this one, too, the 8 seconds where it switches to half-time is far and away the best part of the song, and I think they were a little short-sided to not use that as a bridge or post-chorus at some point. Every time the song goes back to the main riffs and the driving eighths you can feel the song downshift several times (an analogy deep purple would presumably appreciate). All in all I'd probably slot this in between back in black and physical graffiti for how much I enjoyed it. Some absolutely crazy performances in here, and you can hear a lot of more virtuosic metal being kind of grasped at here. In a lot of ways some of Richie Blackmore's playing sounds like Tony Iommi, where playing the blues and scales in fast motion gives you brief glimpses of what's to come. Still, there is a *lot* of filler on here, even for a 37 minute record. My gut is a 3.5 rounding down to 3 stars

The sheer level of Dad Rock™️ has been off the charts but the one note here is we have something a little different to listen to. Some origins of metal here even if it’s DEFINITELY dated. First of all, shout out to the organ running through a rock amplifier. Such a good sound. “Highway Star” is absolutely predicting Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, though with a slight prog twist with the organ going all over the place. The twin leads solo is super fun but a little sloppy (which means you know these dudes were doing it for real). Song rocks, even if it’s incredibly dumb. “Maybe I’m a Leo” is…certainly a follow-up. They can certainly rip but this blues riffing is a) nonsensical and b) boooooooring. Real momentum killer here. “Pictures of Home” gets back in the groove and sweeps me back. It’s missing the edge and deeper groove of the Sabbath greats but have real “Children of the Grave” vibes, with a prog twist. Much better, and should’ve been the second song. Side note: some of these solos fucking rule; they’re not perfect, but that makes them all the more enjoyable. You feel like you’re listening to the cool older kids shred while you’re watching. It’s a neat vibe. Sigh, and then we’re back to the blues funk stuff which is just not good. “Never Before” is just more boring generic dad rock. It honestly makes me wonder if this album is gonna be back and forth the entire time. Also, is this a song about their estranged mom? Cause it sure sounds like a whiny teen. Ah, yes, “Smoke on the Water.” The first song anyone learns on an electric guitar. Though it should be an organ given this album. Anyway that fucking bass is DANK and the organ distortion is just perfect with the guitar riff. Plus, it’s a legendary rock story too. Classic song, perfect riff and a banger of a chorus. Again - everything in this album sounds like dudes just fucking jamming out with little to no effort to refine. I kinda love it. “Lazy” goes hard on the organ to start, which is always fun…and then it goes back to bullshit blues jamming. HOW DO THEY KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!!! Now I do know of “Space Truckin’” and I love it. Because it sounds like a song a trucker in space would love. Does what it says on the tin. Simple as. I’m not including “When a Blind Man Cries” for my review but general notes: 🤢🤢🤢 This is a deeply stupid album that I somehow mostly enjoyed. A very dumb rock band but they know it and I appreciate that and love that journey for them. Keep it up boys.

as a child who grew up on music from guitar hero, Deep Purple were an early favorite of mine whose records i sought out when i first started collecting. even if i like some songs from other eras more this is probably the most consistent lineup Deep Purple ever had, with everyone really holding their own. Ian Paice was one of my favorite drummers back then & i still love his filling, Ian Gillan can be corny as fuck but i still love him (and Jesus Christ Superstar), Blackmore rocks and is the only time i'll accept neoclassical guitar noodling, and Jon Lord's organ defines the sound of this record the notable songs on here are more notable for a reason, and while the shuffle & soloing on Lazy are fun it feels like this just alternates between great rocker & middling letdown. this was not as enjoyable as i remember it being the last time i heard it but the highs are still high!

Without going too deeply into the whole Dad Rock discourse, this is fine. It's a legendary, heavy sound that would have freaked the hell out of a lot of parents back in '72. But you know what? It's kinda boring. I realize how Blackmore influenced just about everyone who ever picked up a guitar with those chops of his, but those chops are now mainstream -- and most bar bands have a guy who can at least keep pace here. Yep. You've got some certified FM radio classics on here. I hadn't heard "Lazy" before, which is a solid boogie after that big ol' keyboard intro -- but I'm not sure if "plugged a Hammond organ into a Marshall amp" certifies one for utter greatness. And the songwriting is...not great. But there are some good tunes you know, some you might not, and an understanding of why metal continued to evolve after this...

An old school rock album.

Let's face it: Smoke on the Water is a much better song than guitar store owners all around are comfortable to admit. In fact, it's pretty good. Add to that the sublime When a Blind Man cries, and you have two instant classics. It is sad, then, that the rest of this album can't hold a candle to these two songs. It's mostly what passed as Hard Rock in the early 70s, with some bluesy passages interleaved (but without any Metal, mind you). But there is nothing special about most of these tracks. On the strength of the two aforementioned songs alone, this is 3/5.

Знаешь я так соскуфился

Got a machine head! It’s better than th- oh, never mind, wrong band. It’s fine, first few songs are great and then it kinda peters out

Smoke on the water is such a meme but great song fr

I liked this, nothing too special but nice to listen to. Standout track: - When A Blind Man Cries (4/5)

Slightly above average classic rock. Some good guitar playing and I'm glad it's not all as heavy and screetchy as Smoke on the Water (which is still a great song). "Lazy" was an album favorite. 5.5/10 (2.75/5)

Highway Star is great, Smoke on the Water, I can't listen to it anymore but it's legitimately a good song. Space Truckin' is nice too, but I can't say that I was really blown away by any of the other tracks. Also, is it me or Ian Paice is incredibly basic as a drummer?

Some good songs here and there, but it's mostly just blues rock with an organ. I largely prefer other albums from DP, or even Uriah Heep if I have to compare them to a similar band.

This might be classic because of Highway Star and Smoke On The Water, but, let's admit it, it's pretty mid overall. Nothing bad, but nothing stands out either. It still deserves its place here, I think!

Hard to argue against such a classic

Das letzte Lied ist mein Highlight

My enduring memory of Deep Purple growing up is tied to our class lunatic (every school has one) who would challenge anyone—student, staff, young, old—to arm wrestling bouts. His "walk-on music" was humming the riff to "Smoke on the Water," starting softly and escalating to a scream by the time he reached the table. It was a fitting choice: brash, memorable, and impossible to ignore. “Smoke on the Water” is unquestionably one of the most iconic rock songs ever, with its instantly recognizable riff becoming a rite of passage for budding guitarists and a defining moment in hard rock history. Released on Machine Head in 1972, it propelled the album to multi-platinum success and cemented Deep Purple’s legacy. Its simple yet unforgettable riff earned it a place on countless "greatest songs" lists and in the Grammy Hall of Fame, remaining a staple of classic rock radio and streaming platforms to this day. The numbers don’t lie. But therein lies the challenge. How do you follow up a track like that? A few make valiant efforts, like "Highway Star," which opens the album with adrenaline-pumping energy and blistering solos; "Never Before," with its melodic hooks; or "Space Truckin’," a thrilling ride of pure rock intensity, packed with an infectious groove and larger-than-life swagger. Yet, Machine Head leans heavily on blues-rock formulas and similar riff structures, which can feel repetitive at times. For all its strengths, Machine Head hasn’t aged as well as some of its peers. It's Deep Purple's most recognizable release, but its reliance on a singular sound and formulaic structure limits its appeal today. Still, with a track like "Smoke on the Water," it has earned its place on the pedestal of classic hard rock. Did/Do I own this release? I owned "Smoke On The Water" on MP3. Does this release belong on the list? No. 1 in the UK and stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for 118 weeks, can't argue with that. Would this release make my personal list? Not really my go-to thing. Will I be listening to it again? Rarely.

This is a big rock album, not sure it's the best thing they ever did but it does contain Smoke On the Water, so for that alone it's a classic.

Decent stuff but must hear? I don't think so.

Highway Star on kyllä kova biisi, mut muuten levy on aika unohdettavaa seiskarirockia. Toki Smoke on the Water on klassikko ala-asteen musatunneilta! 3/5

I feel like I should be working on an old Trans Am in a neighbor’s garage and it’s 1974 and I have a mullet. Lead guitarist must have developed some wild scoliosis carrying this album.

I don’t care for some of their other albums but this one is pretty ok.

rockin. cool album

Not interested in that type of music.

Smoke on the water is great but rest feels generic

Decent early arena rock. Some great instrumental sections. Not a lot of replay value for me.

There were a few good ones on this album. Overall, it was okay.

Perfectly agreeable rock. Simpsons: Yes

Opening right up with Highway star has me wanting to play rockband again! A solid band for the time such a shame they were put into the smoke on the water box

Better than 2, not quite a 3 but closer.

Not bad, won't be listened to again for another 20 years or so.

I like this more than In Rock and it has a lot of classic songs, but I think I'm just not a huge fan of Deep Purple (Child in Time aside).

short album, pretty good! fun sound

This is bookended by the two best tracks on the album, but I enjoyed actually listening to this whole album vs just the highlights.

Blimey! Some 70's hair rock i didn't mind for once. It's impossible not to like 'Smoke on the Water', the rest was OK in parts. Still a tendency to head for the Prog route, but tolerable. I want to give it more than 2 stars but I'm not sure if it deserves 3.

7 songs and 38 minutes. It’s a short one!!! Great intro to Deep Purple though. I have not heard much of their work apart from smoke on the water (what a guitar riff that is!!) I really enjoyed Maybe im a Leo, pictures of home and never before. There are some great Dad rock songs on this album. Favourite song: Maybe I’m a Leo Least favourite: All were good. Album artwork: Good album cover

Classic

Highway Star - what an absolute banger of an opening track. Magnificent. It does rather slump after that, sad to say. Smoke... is a brilliant song. It's just that it's been played to death, so it's very hard to listen to it objectively any more. Space Truckin' is a great tune as well, but overall, this album falls short of my expectations. The singles apart, there's not much here at all. The extended edition, with When a Blind Man Cries, is the better version, being bookended by two stunning tracks. Three stars because the original version is a bit dull despite the superb start.

Everyone on planet earth knows “Smoke on the Water”, or at least the central guitar riff, which is what my expectations for this album were based on. I was thrown for a loop. One of the first words that comes to mind to describe this album is flamboyant. It’s like rock n roll jazz hands. If someone were to write a broadway show about Ozzie Osbourne’s life, this is what I’d expect it to sound like. Which absolutely sounds like something I’d hate, but this was a pretty fun listen. It gets a lil groovy at points. I like the bass solo near the middle-end of “Pictures of Home”. Some good musicianship on display notwithstanding, this album strikes me as very silly. Not a bad silly, but silly no less. 6.5/10

it's burning over the water

Smoke on the water and other prog rock tracks

Much better than I expected, acid rock

A little old school but still pretty damn good.

It's really hard to look back objectively because so much of our current experience has been built cumulatively over decades. Think of what you laugh at and remember that there was once vaudeville and knock knock jokes, and before that people farting and hitting each other. Deep Purple get a lot of mileage from playing scales really fast and singing basic lyrics, but once upon a time this was new, and men didn't scream lyrics, and guitars weren't distorted. Was it important? Yeah. Would I listen to it now? Not really. I'm waiting for it to end as I write this. Three stars.

Albumi #82, 18.10.2024 Deep Purplen kuudes studioalbumi vuodelta 1972.

Two pretty good songs, the rest forgettable.

Highway Star - Sounds like almost every single other rock band from this era, 6/10, not horrible Maybe I’m A Leo - Slightly better, not enough to warrant a full number shift, but, 6.5/10 Pictures Of Home - 6.8/10 Never Before - 6/10 Smoke On The Water - Iconic song, 7/10 Lazy- 7.5/10 Space Truckin’ - 7.3/10 When A Blind Man Cries - 8.5/10, A beautiful song Overall - 7.1/10

6.5/10 Highlights: When a Blind Man Cries Lazy Smoke on the Water Highway Star

God the electric guitar in this album is so sexy I’m obsessed. The drum solo in Space Truckin’ is fantastic. When a Blind Man Cries (B-Side) from the 2016 Version is absolutely beautiful

crazy head

It’s good, had I heard this when I was younger I’d be into it more.

First listen. A few pretty good songs. The rest was ok.

A song filled with classic songs and an iconic sound. It won't make it into a regular rotation, but I appreciated it during these listens. 3.5

Gotta know where you came from to understand where you are now. Not the best album but a foundational one

It sounds amazing. The every riff, every line. It’s a really impressive noise. I’m struggling to call it art, though, because the only emotion or concept that anyone seems to be trying to communicate is Look What I Can Do. They try to get emotional on the last track. The last line of the album is “When a blind man cries, Lord, you know he feels it in his soul.” Not to be insensitive but… why? What are you talking about? Why wouldn’t blind men cry? What the hell do those things have to do with each other? It’s slightly more affecting than the song about hoping that nobody steals his car but not by much. I’m glad they made the album. Because more interesting people were able to listen to it and steal all the good bits.

I just don't like the singer. If the album was purely instrumental it would be amazing and 5 stars. Smoke on the Water is great though.

Recognized Smoke on the Water.

Solid album. Enjoyed their sound.

Two songs that I dig, the first and of course Smoke on the Water. The rest was just good old classic rock.

dobra svirka, ali nije nista specijalno i verovatno ne bih slusao ponovo osim smoke on the water i highway star. tri zvezdice jedino zbog svirke.

Eh… not bad?

I had some fun with this, even if it is Dad Rock. Most of the songs were just ok to me. Cool guitar though.

I prefer Black Sabbath.

I truly had only heard Smoke on the Water. I assumed it was all psychedelic stuff. I was surprised from the first song. Great album.

Smoke on the water is simply amazing

Early metal that influenced guitarists all over the world

smoke on the water innit

Tight album at 37 mins. Favorite Track: Space Truckin'

Lots of hits on here, while memorable I didn’t love many of the other songs however. What works, works. 3.3

Good album but didn't find myself wowed. All solid, just nothing stood out. The tones were a little too rough and grating.

I think I'm just too familiar with Smoke on the Water for it to have any sort of musical impact to me. The rest of the album is actually pretty awesome, though. My expectations were pretty low, and I'm pretty blown away. I think my expectations were pretty low because I don't have a ton of respect for Smoke on the Water anymore. So I was pleasantly surprised when the rest of the songs on the album has interesting guitar riffs and and fun instrumentals. It still doesn't really measure up that well to its contemporaries, but it's at least a good, fun, and complete album. Favorite Song(s): Maybe I'm a Leo, Never Before

Fun at times and a part of the rock tapestry but lacking dimension.

Smoke On The Water is severely overplayed and overappreciated, but I enjoyed more of this album than I thought I would despite the unappealing organ noises. Highway Star is a banger.

bizarre wankery but not too bad

A powerful hard rock band. The guitar, bass, and keyboards combine to really drive the music and make it heavy. Talented musicians, ok songwriters. This certainly has some classics songs and some solid solos from each member. Singer can be a bit annoying with his high pitched yells. Important in the early progression of heavy music, but overall just a fine classic rock album.

"youre lazy, just laying in bed"??? well fuck you too

Surprisingly innocent.

Feels a little dated to me. Something about the energy is lacking when compared to Sabbath of Zeppelin. But the organ's fun. Opener and closer are the high points.

3.4 listened 3x

Classic

I was surprised how much I liked it, I was expecting heavier as Deep Purple are one of the British heavy metal stalwarts. Talented musicians, good solo's and rocking tunes.

I didn't know the first track was deep purple. Good classic rock

I dig Deep Purple. Solid rock band.

Highway star slaps, rest was mid. 3.5

Pretty cool but didn’t lose my mind over it

Much more enjoyable with more focus than the live album

I'm wondering why the authors would include this and the live album "Made in Japan" when 3 out of 7 songs overlap. I suppose the latter is more included as a display of one of the highest-regarded live albums of all time, but it still feels weird to listen to such redundancy when so many other albums are omitted. That aside, Deep purple is about as "down the middle" as "classic rock" gets.

Classic rock

Pretty good

Some 70s acts would have benefited so much from the modern 3 year album cycle. Some killer, plenty filler.

Iconic group. Good listen.

Is this where "Smoke on the Water" comes from? At any rate, this one kinda faded into the background like so many of them.

A fun album with some classic rock songs and some great guitar riffs. Just unfortunately felt a little shallow with nothing to "wow" me or connect deeper to.

Solid 7

Tunes were great, would listen again

Smoke on the water is one of the first riffs every guitar player learns, so that's fun. Otherwise, not really my thing.

Good old classic rock and roll!

It was fine? Other then smoke on the water nothing really stuck out to me.

It was intersting, I did not know what to expect, a harder rock album that had some known good songs on it, but all in all, not my Jam

Not a band I tend to gravitate towards but listening to this did conjure up nostalgia of the early 70's when this band was very influential in the progressive rock genre, alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Deep Purple 's sound is actually quite palatable, it's not that continual white noise pound you get from 'metal'. Ritchie Blackmore 's guitar playing is very good. Got to give this album respect. Overall, an OK listen

I really do like some of Deep Purple’s stuff. I also think that most of their songs are one or two minutes too long. A bit of a tighter focus and I think I’d love this. But “Smoke on the Water” still rocks. 3/5

"Smoke on the Water" is an iconic classic, but its' sharp edges have been eroded by time and excessive radio play and it sorta feels more like an impotent museum piece at this point. Groundbreaking in its day, though, and still a nostalgic listen. For a band that is the precursor to heavy metal, the surprise for me here are those awesome keyboards/organ solos throughout. Check out what I mean on Highway Star, Pictures of Home, and Never Before. Nice guitar solos on these too. The best discovery here is "Lazy," an awesome blues rock jam, replete with harmonica solo! Overall, more enjoyable than I expected, but a 3.0 at best.

It was a chore to get through this but you gotta love the story behind Smoke On The Water, and respect that it's the first riff almost every rocker figures out how to play.

very enjoyable

Not bad - kind of like B-level Who in my mind

Still pretty rocking. Interesting to hear the development from 70s to 80s. I much prefer the 70s deep purple. But maybe that would make a good bar convo.

More bluesy than I remember.

A bit too slow

I think everyone knows Smoke On The Water, but I can’t say I know the rest of the album. Good bluesy rock, nice background music not much more for me.

Good album. This album shreds pretty hard. The guitar work and riffs are top-notch with just some really nice soloing and extended instrumentals. My main issue with this album is it's a bit rock formulaic and the songs themselves are relatively poor lyrically. ***

Really enjoyed Smoke on the Water—cracked me up that my teenager knew the song right away. Apparently the marching band plays it. :0) The rest of the album was meh for me.

From Hard Rock to Heavy Metal with an tremendous Guitar… 6/10

I mean it's average as average can be. Not my type of music, kinda controlled and sustained basic imo

Solid dad rock/metal, yeah it’s got smoke on the water but outside of that it’s not a bad listen

This is some 70's rock if I've ever heard any. Solid guitar rifts with drums and bass being more rythym. Smoke on the water is easily one of the most recognizable openings in rock history. Overall though, probably not something I will be coming back to. I would probably just listen to Boston if this was the music I wanted to listen to. While I thought none of the songs were bad, most weren't memorable or left me with no lasting impression Lazy has a tremendous opening and I wouldn't have known about this song without this listen through.

I mean it's got two great songs and is kind of music that plays at your drunk uncles BBQ. Not bad but not good 2.75 rounded up

Generally a fan of super rift heavy music - this album fell a bit flat for me. It was certainly one of my favourite albums when I was 12 due to learning the Smoke on the Water rift on guitar and playing Guitar Hero at my friend Shayan's house. I always loved Highway Star which I still think is very good. I almost feel like the songs are a bit long and drawn out and it made the album feel much longer than it actually was.

Pictures of home Lazy

not as good as MIJ
