nasty nasty nasty album

Nostalgic. 3

Yeah pretty solid rock album. Smoke on the Water is iconic but the rest of the album is mostly just solid but doesn’t really stand out.

I thought deep purple were a bit of a joke tbh. But some of these riffs and interplay between the different instruments are tight af

Live in Japan is the biggest pile of horse shit even put to vinyl. This, however i think we can all agree, rocks

A strong 3 - some good tunes - sadly Smoke on the Waters impact is much diminished due to over familiarity. Would not rush back - but nothing made my ears bleed.

Overall, I do find the hard-rock tropes are mitigated by some really soulful guitar playing and effective riffs, which elevate this above the likes of the one-trick ponies Motorhead, or the soft-rock of Iron Maiden and co. 'Maybe I'm a Leo' a good example - dull power-chords but into a pretty solid Cream-type blues rock riff. And so it is with 'Pictures of Home' and 'Never Before'. The 'Smoke' riff is a classic for any guitarist - mainly because it's easy to play. It feels stately in its slower tempo. The song doesn't get lost to tiresome ubiquity - the narrative about the Montreux casino burning down, alongside the vivid lyrical imagery and cool band references, is involving and evocative. Rightly a classic. I thought it a very solid album with some nice touches.

Not great, but enjoyable.

The second song is way too redundant and I think that most of the album is redundant like all the songs are built the same way. I feel like I'm not surprised by anything in this album after listening to one song, you get the mood, a cool mood but boring sometimes even if in some songs you have some great guitar solo like in "Pictures Of Home" or in "Never Before". Usually I don't like classic/mainstream rock bangers from the 70s but "Smoke On The Water" stands out from the crowd, the guitar riff is insaaaane and like I would have loved to listen to it in a concert. I'd like to apologize for saying that the whole album is redundant "Lazy" is incredibly insane, the intro is a masterclass, I think that the song coud have stayed without any lyrics because that part isn't as good as it was during the first 4min. But this song also gave me more of a groovy rock song and not a hard rock song. Special Mention to "When A Blind Man Cries", the slowest song of the album, there was more depth in this song, I usually don't really care about the lyrics but this one hitted me and I got stuck into it. Sad that they didn't make any other songs from this album more into this vibe. To conclude, the musicians are talented that's for sure but as I said way too redundant especially for the first songs but then 3 of them are absolutely insane and make this album better.

Smoke on the water is a stand out. The rest of the album is good but not great to my ear.

Now That’s What I Call Dad Rock Volume 72 Highlights include: “Smoke on the Water” “Lazy” and “Space Truckin’”

Pretty good album but honestly forgettable other than a few classics.

I have always heard this album was hype and boy did it live up to the hype. All of the hits I've heard over the years are bangers and the rest of the album holds up great too. The first 5 star from me

Three of the best deep purple songs on one record. This is pretty good despite my distaste for endless noodling on songs (tbf they kept it pretty tame compared to Made In Japan) Enjoyable for the most part.

It's got two big hits here with Highway Star and Smoke on the Water and that justifies its appearance on this list. Otherwise, all the other songs are fine to good but never amazing. Nothing to dislike, but nothing I'd return to in the future. 20/01/25

Quitando las 2 canciones conocidas del discos me ha parecido bastante blandito, salvado por su corta duración y porque con los años me he acostumbrado a escuchar la música de Deep Purple gracias a Rock FM. Canción destacada: Highway Star

Nice and rocking

In my head Deep Purple and in particular the riff for Smoke on the water are better than they actually are! I found this a bit plodding and slow. In mitigation it is 53 years old and blazed a trail for acts to come.

Good. Kinda background music. Probably really good if you're into this stuff but it just didn't really do anything for me. I just felt like I was listening to classic rock.

Smoke on the water is their famous song but some other solid metal songs/guitar riffs

Highway Star

If it comes on I’ll listen to it but I won’t go out of my way to put them on.

“smoke on the water” is such a classic

Machine Head is pretty standard classic rock. Smoke on the Water, like everyone else was the first riff I learnt to play. But nothing on this album truly stands out. It’s good but standard 6.3/10

Funky head banger

Not bad. I wanted it to be just a bit better to get to a 4, but it fell short.

The Good: Machine Head is an awesome song by Busch! The Bad: This isn’t a Bush album… The Ugly: Realizing that Deep Purple, DP, is NOT a reference to a sexual act… What a treat this album has turned out to be… and to think that this is the second DP album that I’ve been presented on this here voyage. The musicianship on the album is excellent, the songs are great, the solos are delightful… and yet, no 5* because I need to be a little more critical… and I wish that the rating would be between zero and 10 stars… then this album would get a solid 7* For now, here is the undeserved 3* because it should be 4*, but that is what I gave Ray Charles’s album yesterday, and that wouldn’t be fair...

Fine but a little boring. I like the crunchy guitar sounds.

I like the smoke in the air song; that's a classic. But overall, it's not my type of music.

I'm having a hard time deciding if this is a smart record pretending to be stupid, or a stupid album pretending to be smart, I think my gut is that it's the former. Some genuinely inspired arrangement choices and some virtuosic playing all around, coexisting with gobs of braindead blues rock and lead-poisoned lyrics about how sexy ladies are like sports cars. Highway Star is kind of an encompassing summary of the album in that way. The verses are dull monotonous melodies centered around the tonic while the rhythm guitar is doing neanderthal chugging underneath, and yet the chorus always feels so weird and off-balance. It's always a measure shorter than we'd expect, and the band always rushes slightly while going through the syncopations. And then there's Richie Blackmore's weird cascading scale exercise of a solo that works in what sounded like harmonic minor? This might be the first album I've ever listened to where my inclination is to just fast-forward to all of the guitar solos. "Maybe I'm a Leo" is by a good margin the worst song on the album, the most listless and unimaginative blues in the history of the British isles. The whole song is just every instrument clomping around heavily around minor pentatonic scales, no attempts at venturing away from the most generic bar blues-rock ever generated on earth. Give pat boone several sedatives and he'd still come up with a more visceral and compelling blues than this. My hot take on smoke on the water? The riff might be the worst part of the song. Honestly the verses here are brilliant, that free wheeling bass part works so well against the vocal melody, and the drum fills here are absolutely sick. Love the call and response chorus between vocals and lead guitar. Another corker of a guitar solo on this one, too, the 8 seconds where it switches to half-time is far and away the best part of the song, and I think they were a little short-sided to not use that as a bridge or post-chorus at some point. Every time the song goes back to the main riffs and the driving eighths you can feel the song downshift several times (an analogy deep purple would presumably appreciate). All in all I'd probably slot this in between back in black and physical graffiti for how much I enjoyed it. Some absolutely crazy performances in here, and you can hear a lot of more virtuosic metal being kind of grasped at here. In a lot of ways some of Richie Blackmore's playing sounds like Tony Iommi, where playing the blues and scales in fast motion gives you brief glimpses of what's to come. Still, there is a *lot* of filler on here, even for a 37 minute record. My gut is a 3.5 rounding down to 3 stars

The sheer level of Dad Rock™️ has been off the charts but the one note here is we have something a little different to listen to. Some origins of metal here even if it’s DEFINITELY dated. First of all, shout out to the organ running through a rock amplifier. Such a good sound. “Highway Star” is absolutely predicting Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, though with a slight prog twist with the organ going all over the place. The twin leads solo is super fun but a little sloppy (which means you know these dudes were doing it for real). Song rocks, even if it’s incredibly dumb. “Maybe I’m a Leo” is…certainly a follow-up. They can certainly rip but this blues riffing is a) nonsensical and b) boooooooring. Real momentum killer here. “Pictures of Home” gets back in the groove and sweeps me back. It’s missing the edge and deeper groove of the Sabbath greats but have real “Children of the Grave” vibes, with a prog twist. Much better, and should’ve been the second song. Side note: some of these solos fucking rule; they’re not perfect, but that makes them all the more enjoyable. You feel like you’re listening to the cool older kids shred while you’re watching. It’s a neat vibe. Sigh, and then we’re back to the blues funk stuff which is just not good. “Never Before” is just more boring generic dad rock. It honestly makes me wonder if this album is gonna be back and forth the entire time. Also, is this a song about their estranged mom? Cause it sure sounds like a whiny teen. Ah, yes, “Smoke on the Water.” The first song anyone learns on an electric guitar. Though it should be an organ given this album. Anyway that fucking bass is DANK and the organ distortion is just perfect with the guitar riff. Plus, it’s a legendary rock story too. Classic song, perfect riff and a banger of a chorus. Again - everything in this album sounds like dudes just fucking jamming out with little to no effort to refine. I kinda love it. “Lazy” goes hard on the organ to start, which is always fun…and then it goes back to bullshit blues jamming. HOW DO THEY KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!!! Now I do know of “Space Truckin’” and I love it. Because it sounds like a song a trucker in space would love. Does what it says on the tin. Simple as. I’m not including “When a Blind Man Cries” for my review but general notes: 🤢🤢🤢 This is a deeply stupid album that I somehow mostly enjoyed. A very dumb rock band but they know it and I appreciate that and love that journey for them. Keep it up boys.

as a child who grew up on music from guitar hero, Deep Purple were an early favorite of mine whose records i sought out when i first started collecting. even if i like some songs from other eras more this is probably the most consistent lineup Deep Purple ever had, with everyone really holding their own. Ian Paice was one of my favorite drummers back then & i still love his filling, Ian Gillan can be corny as fuck but i still love him (and Jesus Christ Superstar), Blackmore rocks and is the only time i'll accept neoclassical guitar noodling, and Jon Lord's organ defines the sound of this record the notable songs on here are more notable for a reason, and while the shuffle & soloing on Lazy are fun it feels like this just alternates between great rocker & middling letdown. this was not as enjoyable as i remember it being the last time i heard it but the highs are still high!

Without going too deeply into the whole Dad Rock discourse, this is fine. It's a legendary, heavy sound that would have freaked the hell out of a lot of parents back in '72. But you know what? It's kinda boring. I realize how Blackmore influenced just about everyone who ever picked up a guitar with those chops of his, but those chops are now mainstream -- and most bar bands have a guy who can at least keep pace here. Yep. You've got some certified FM radio classics on here. I hadn't heard "Lazy" before, which is a solid boogie after that big ol' keyboard intro -- but I'm not sure if "plugged a Hammond organ into a Marshall amp" certifies one for utter greatness. And the songwriting is...not great. But there are some good tunes you know, some you might not, and an understanding of why metal continued to evolve after this...

An old school rock album.

Let's face it: Smoke on the Water is a much better song than guitar store owners all around are comfortable to admit. In fact, it's pretty good. Add to that the sublime When a Blind Man cries, and you have two instant classics. It is sad, then, that the rest of this album can't hold a candle to these two songs. It's mostly what passed as Hard Rock in the early 70s, with some bluesy passages interleaved (but without any Metal, mind you). But there is nothing special about most of these tracks. On the strength of the two aforementioned songs alone, this is 3/5.

Знаешь я так соскуфился

Got a machine head! It’s better than th- oh, never mind, wrong band. It’s fine, first few songs are great and then it kinda peters out

Smoke on the water is such a meme but great song fr

I liked this, nothing too special but nice to listen to. Standout track: - When A Blind Man Cries (4/5)

Slightly above average classic rock. Some good guitar playing and I'm glad it's not all as heavy and screetchy as Smoke on the Water (which is still a great song). "Lazy" was an album favorite. 5.5/10 (2.75/5)

Highway Star is great, Smoke on the Water, I can't listen to it anymore but it's legitimately a good song. Space Truckin' is nice too, but I can't say that I was really blown away by any of the other tracks. Also, is it me or Ian Paice is incredibly basic as a drummer?

Some good songs here and there, but it's mostly just blues rock with an organ. I largely prefer other albums from DP, or even Uriah Heep if I have to compare them to a similar band.

This might be classic because of Highway Star and Smoke On The Water, but, let's admit it, it's pretty mid overall. Nothing bad, but nothing stands out either. It still deserves its place here, I think!

Hard to argue against such a classic

Das letzte Lied ist mein Highlight

My enduring memory of Deep Purple growing up is tied to our class lunatic (every school has one) who would challenge anyone—student, staff, young, old—to arm wrestling bouts. His "walk-on music" was humming the riff to "Smoke on the Water," starting softly and escalating to a scream by the time he reached the table. It was a fitting choice: brash, memorable, and impossible to ignore. “Smoke on the Water” is unquestionably one of the most iconic rock songs ever, with its instantly recognizable riff becoming a rite of passage for budding guitarists and a defining moment in hard rock history. Released on Machine Head in 1972, it propelled the album to multi-platinum success and cemented Deep Purple’s legacy. Its simple yet unforgettable riff earned it a place on countless "greatest songs" lists and in the Grammy Hall of Fame, remaining a staple of classic rock radio and streaming platforms to this day. The numbers don’t lie. But therein lies the challenge. How do you follow up a track like that? A few make valiant efforts, like "Highway Star," which opens the album with adrenaline-pumping energy and blistering solos; "Never Before," with its melodic hooks; or "Space Truckin’," a thrilling ride of pure rock intensity, packed with an infectious groove and larger-than-life swagger. Yet, Machine Head leans heavily on blues-rock formulas and similar riff structures, which can feel repetitive at times. For all its strengths, Machine Head hasn’t aged as well as some of its peers. It's Deep Purple's most recognizable release, but its reliance on a singular sound and formulaic structure limits its appeal today. Still, with a track like "Smoke on the Water," it has earned its place on the pedestal of classic hard rock. Did/Do I own this release? I owned "Smoke On The Water" on MP3. Does this release belong on the list? No. 1 in the UK and stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for 118 weeks, can't argue with that. Would this release make my personal list? Not really my go-to thing. Will I be listening to it again? Rarely.

This is a big rock album, not sure it's the best thing they ever did but it does contain Smoke On the Water, so for that alone it's a classic.

Decent stuff but must hear? I don't think so.

Highway Star on kyllä kova biisi, mut muuten levy on aika unohdettavaa seiskarirockia. Toki Smoke on the Water on klassikko ala-asteen musatunneilta! 3/5

I feel like I should be working on an old Trans Am in a neighbor’s garage and it’s 1974 and I have a mullet. Lead guitarist must have developed some wild scoliosis carrying this album.

I don’t care for some of their other albums but this one is pretty ok.

rockin. cool album

Not interested in that type of music.

Smoke on the water is great but rest feels generic

Decent early arena rock. Some great instrumental sections. Not a lot of replay value for me.

There were a few good ones on this album. Overall, it was okay.

Perfectly agreeable rock. Simpsons: Yes

Opening right up with Highway star has me wanting to play rockband again! A solid band for the time such a shame they were put into the smoke on the water box

Better than 2, not quite a 3 but closer.

Not bad, won't be listened to again for another 20 years or so.

I like this more than In Rock and it has a lot of classic songs, but I think I'm just not a huge fan of Deep Purple (Child in Time aside).

short album, pretty good! fun sound

This is bookended by the two best tracks on the album, but I enjoyed actually listening to this whole album vs just the highlights.

Blimey! Some 70's hair rock i didn't mind for once. It's impossible not to like 'Smoke on the Water', the rest was OK in parts. Still a tendency to head for the Prog route, but tolerable. I want to give it more than 2 stars but I'm not sure if it deserves 3.

7 songs and 38 minutes. It’s a short one!!! Great intro to Deep Purple though. I have not heard much of their work apart from smoke on the water (what a guitar riff that is!!) I really enjoyed Maybe im a Leo, pictures of home and never before. There are some great Dad rock songs on this album. Favourite song: Maybe I’m a Leo Least favourite: All were good. Album artwork: Good album cover

Classic

Highway Star - what an absolute banger of an opening track. Magnificent. It does rather slump after that, sad to say. Smoke... is a brilliant song. It's just that it's been played to death, so it's very hard to listen to it objectively any more. Space Truckin' is a great tune as well, but overall, this album falls short of my expectations. The singles apart, there's not much here at all. The extended edition, with When a Blind Man Cries, is the better version, being bookended by two stunning tracks. Three stars because the original version is a bit dull despite the superb start.

Everyone on planet earth knows “Smoke on the Water”, or at least the central guitar riff, which is what my expectations for this album were based on. I was thrown for a loop. One of the first words that comes to mind to describe this album is flamboyant. It’s like rock n roll jazz hands. If someone were to write a broadway show about Ozzie Osbourne’s life, this is what I’d expect it to sound like. Which absolutely sounds like something I’d hate, but this was a pretty fun listen. It gets a lil groovy at points. I like the bass solo near the middle-end of “Pictures of Home”. Some good musicianship on display notwithstanding, this album strikes me as very silly. Not a bad silly, but silly no less. 6.5/10

it's burning over the water

Smoke on the water and other prog rock tracks

Much better than I expected, acid rock

A little old school but still pretty damn good.

It's really hard to look back objectively because so much of our current experience has been built cumulatively over decades. Think of what you laugh at and remember that there was once vaudeville and knock knock jokes, and before that people farting and hitting each other. Deep Purple get a lot of mileage from playing scales really fast and singing basic lyrics, but once upon a time this was new, and men didn't scream lyrics, and guitars weren't distorted. Was it important? Yeah. Would I listen to it now? Not really. I'm waiting for it to end as I write this. Three stars.

Albumi #82, 18.10.2024 Deep Purplen kuudes studioalbumi vuodelta 1972.

Two pretty good songs, the rest forgettable.

Highway Star - Sounds like almost every single other rock band from this era, 6/10, not horrible Maybe I’m A Leo - Slightly better, not enough to warrant a full number shift, but, 6.5/10 Pictures Of Home - 6.8/10 Never Before - 6/10 Smoke On The Water - Iconic song, 7/10 Lazy- 7.5/10 Space Truckin’ - 7.3/10 When A Blind Man Cries - 8.5/10, A beautiful song Overall - 7.1/10

6.5/10 Highlights: When a Blind Man Cries Lazy Smoke on the Water Highway Star

God the electric guitar in this album is so sexy I’m obsessed. The drum solo in Space Truckin’ is fantastic. When a Blind Man Cries (B-Side) from the 2016 Version is absolutely beautiful

crazy head

It’s good, had I heard this when I was younger I’d be into it more.

First listen. A few pretty good songs. The rest was ok.

A song filled with classic songs and an iconic sound. It won't make it into a regular rotation, but I appreciated it during these listens. 3.5

Gotta know where you came from to understand where you are now. Not the best album but a foundational one

It sounds amazing. The every riff, every line. It’s a really impressive noise. I’m struggling to call it art, though, because the only emotion or concept that anyone seems to be trying to communicate is Look What I Can Do. They try to get emotional on the last track. The last line of the album is “When a blind man cries, Lord, you know he feels it in his soul.” Not to be insensitive but… why? What are you talking about? Why wouldn’t blind men cry? What the hell do those things have to do with each other? It’s slightly more affecting than the song about hoping that nobody steals his car but not by much. I’m glad they made the album. Because more interesting people were able to listen to it and steal all the good bits.

I just don't like the singer. If the album was purely instrumental it would be amazing and 5 stars. Smoke on the Water is great though.

Recognized Smoke on the Water.

Solid album. Enjoyed their sound.

Two songs that I dig, the first and of course Smoke on the Water. The rest was just good old classic rock.

dobra svirka, ali nije nista specijalno i verovatno ne bih slusao ponovo osim smoke on the water i highway star. tri zvezdice jedino zbog svirke.

Eh… not bad?

I had some fun with this, even if it is Dad Rock. Most of the songs were just ok to me. Cool guitar though.

I prefer Black Sabbath.

I truly had only heard Smoke on the Water. I assumed it was all psychedelic stuff. I was surprised from the first song. Great album.

Smoke on the water is simply amazing

Early metal that influenced guitarists all over the world

smoke on the water innit

Tight album at 37 mins. Favorite Track: Space Truckin'

Lots of hits on here, while memorable I didn’t love many of the other songs however. What works, works. 3.3

Good album but didn't find myself wowed. All solid, just nothing stood out. The tones were a little too rough and grating.

I think I'm just too familiar with Smoke on the Water for it to have any sort of musical impact to me. The rest of the album is actually pretty awesome, though. My expectations were pretty low, and I'm pretty blown away. I think my expectations were pretty low because I don't have a ton of respect for Smoke on the Water anymore. So I was pleasantly surprised when the rest of the songs on the album has interesting guitar riffs and and fun instrumentals. It still doesn't really measure up that well to its contemporaries, but it's at least a good, fun, and complete album. Favorite Song(s): Maybe I'm a Leo, Never Before

Fun at times and a part of the rock tapestry but lacking dimension.

Smoke On The Water is severely overplayed and overappreciated, but I enjoyed more of this album than I thought I would despite the unappealing organ noises. Highway Star is a banger.

bizarre wankery but not too bad

A powerful hard rock band. The guitar, bass, and keyboards combine to really drive the music and make it heavy. Talented musicians, ok songwriters. This certainly has some classics songs and some solid solos from each member. Singer can be a bit annoying with his high pitched yells. Important in the early progression of heavy music, but overall just a fine classic rock album.

"youre lazy, just laying in bed"??? well fuck you too

Surprisingly innocent.

Feels a little dated to me. Something about the energy is lacking when compared to Sabbath of Zeppelin. But the organ's fun. Opener and closer are the high points.

3.4 listened 3x

Classic

I was surprised how much I liked it, I was expecting heavier as Deep Purple are one of the British heavy metal stalwarts. Talented musicians, good solo's and rocking tunes.

I didn't know the first track was deep purple. Good classic rock

I dig Deep Purple. Solid rock band.

Highway star slaps, rest was mid. 3.5

Pretty cool but didn’t lose my mind over it

Much more enjoyable with more focus than the live album

I'm wondering why the authors would include this and the live album "Made in Japan" when 3 out of 7 songs overlap. I suppose the latter is more included as a display of one of the highest-regarded live albums of all time, but it still feels weird to listen to such redundancy when so many other albums are omitted. That aside, Deep purple is about as "down the middle" as "classic rock" gets.

Classic rock

Pretty good

Some 70s acts would have benefited so much from the modern 3 year album cycle. Some killer, plenty filler.

Iconic group. Good listen.

Is this where "Smoke on the Water" comes from? At any rate, this one kinda faded into the background like so many of them.

A fun album with some classic rock songs and some great guitar riffs. Just unfortunately felt a little shallow with nothing to "wow" me or connect deeper to.

Solid 7

Tunes were great, would listen again

Smoke on the water is one of the first riffs every guitar player learns, so that's fun. Otherwise, not really my thing.

Good old classic rock and roll!

It was fine? Other then smoke on the water nothing really stuck out to me.

It was intersting, I did not know what to expect, a harder rock album that had some known good songs on it, but all in all, not my Jam

Not a band I tend to gravitate towards but listening to this did conjure up nostalgia of the early 70's when this band was very influential in the progressive rock genre, alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Deep Purple 's sound is actually quite palatable, it's not that continual white noise pound you get from 'metal'. Ritchie Blackmore 's guitar playing is very good. Got to give this album respect. Overall, an OK listen

I really do like some of Deep Purple’s stuff. I also think that most of their songs are one or two minutes too long. A bit of a tighter focus and I think I’d love this. But “Smoke on the Water” still rocks. 3/5

"Smoke on the Water" is an iconic classic, but its' sharp edges have been eroded by time and excessive radio play and it sorta feels more like an impotent museum piece at this point. Groundbreaking in its day, though, and still a nostalgic listen. For a band that is the precursor to heavy metal, the surprise for me here are those awesome keyboards/organ solos throughout. Check out what I mean on Highway Star, Pictures of Home, and Never Before. Nice guitar solos on these too. The best discovery here is "Lazy," an awesome blues rock jam, replete with harmonica solo! Overall, more enjoyable than I expected, but a 3.0 at best.

It was a chore to get through this but you gotta love the story behind Smoke On The Water, and respect that it's the first riff almost every rocker figures out how to play.

very enjoyable

Not bad - kind of like B-level Who in my mind

Still pretty rocking. Interesting to hear the development from 70s to 80s. I much prefer the 70s deep purple. But maybe that would make a good bar convo.

More bluesy than I remember.

A bit too slow

I think everyone knows Smoke On The Water, but I can’t say I know the rest of the album. Good bluesy rock, nice background music not much more for me.

Good album. This album shreds pretty hard. The guitar work and riffs are top-notch with just some really nice soloing and extended instrumentals. My main issue with this album is it's a bit rock formulaic and the songs themselves are relatively poor lyrically. ***

Really enjoyed Smoke on the Water—cracked me up that my teenager knew the song right away. Apparently the marching band plays it. :0) The rest of the album was meh for me.

From Hard Rock to Heavy Metal with an tremendous Guitar… 6/10

I mean it's average as average can be. Not my type of music, kinda controlled and sustained basic imo

Solid dad rock/metal, yeah it’s got smoke on the water but outside of that it’s not a bad listen

This is some 70's rock if I've ever heard any. Solid guitar rifts with drums and bass being more rythym. Smoke on the water is easily one of the most recognizable openings in rock history. Overall though, probably not something I will be coming back to. I would probably just listen to Boston if this was the music I wanted to listen to. While I thought none of the songs were bad, most weren't memorable or left me with no lasting impression Lazy has a tremendous opening and I wouldn't have known about this song without this listen through.

I mean it's got two great songs and is kind of music that plays at your drunk uncles BBQ. Not bad but not good 2.75 rounded up

Generally a fan of super rift heavy music - this album fell a bit flat for me. It was certainly one of my favourite albums when I was 12 due to learning the Smoke on the Water rift on guitar and playing Guitar Hero at my friend Shayan's house. I always loved Highway Star which I still think is very good. I almost feel like the songs are a bit long and drawn out and it made the album feel much longer than it actually was.

Pictures of home Lazy

not as good as MIJ

Compared to Made in Japan, this album has slightly less energy, but far more balanced composition, which is a welcome tradeoff to me. The solos feel less elaborate and less strung out. Sometimes, this felt more punctual and proper to the song, other times the solos lacked some soul to it. In general, the album has excellent composition, I found the flow of the album to be good, and other than the solos, I enjoyed the songs quite a bit. The solos were hit or miss (or more frequently hit, then miss), and those are primarily what prevent me from listening to this more often, hence the score.

Not my thing. But if you like it, that’s cool.

This album was interesting. In the way that every song sounded alike. Maybe that's how I digested it. I enjoyed "Maybe I'm a Leo"

Fine, a little fun. They rocked so we could run(?). Or something. Foundational but overplayed. Should I start a cult based on the song Space Truckin’?

Decent enough classic rock that rocks. Nothing special, in my opinion. Fine enough background music, but doesn’t really hold up to further scrutiny.

Best song; smoke on the water and lazy Worst song: maybe I’m a Leo Most of the songs on here sound the same, none of them are bad but it does get boring after a while

Classic rock. Some good music in here.

Smoke On The Water // When A Blind Man Cries

Peak ”gubbrock” or dad rock in English. I sure heard my father repeatedly play this in the car growing up. It’s alright for what it is but the singer is a bit bland.

Deep Purple’s Machine Head actually doesn’t really feel like metal. Its softer, although still hard rock. I felt it was a little bit too long for my liking considering having only a 7 track album. I liked certain parts of Maybe I’m a Leo and Smoke on the Water, but they both turned in directions that became not as great as the tracks progressed. Besides those two, most songs were just alright. All in all, Machine Head is an alright album. Best Song: Maybe I'm a Leo Worst Song: Space Truckin'

Generic rock. The definition of dad rock. Does absolutely zero for me. I can understand the merits, however, as for my taste it just don’t hit.

Fond memory alert: my dad, who *does not* play instruments, taught me Smoke on the Water when I was an itty bitty child on like a $40 Walmart guitar

Kaksi kunnioitettavaa meemiä ja bluesia kukkoillen. Onnistunut levy.

Back in the day I absolutely loved Deep Purple. I still rate this album, but perhaps not as much as I did then.

Carried by the popular songs imo. Not bad but not something I will return to, just not my go-to genre.

Was ok

Guitar is going CRAZY. The solo on highway star is great. Smoke on the water is iconic, but still goes on for too long. Overall songs are quite long and a bit boring not really for me. Somewhere between a 2.5 and a 3.

I am familiar with several songs on this album. I can see why it is in the top 1,001 although listening to it once was enough for me.

Deep Purple has some deep cuts??? Led Zeppelin lite??? Some great jams and some ok. Good album overall.

Guitar riffs are legendary. Everything else is average.

Die konnten noch selbst Musik machen 😀. Im Ernst: technisch toll. Ich mag aber auf dauer keine Rockmusik. Hat ein wenig etwas von einer Jazz Session: jeder hst mal ein Solo.

The start of heavy metal! Smoke on the Water. Other good tracks, too.

A classic, I guess. Not really my thing.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this, it wasn't as heavy as I was expecting.

Good Rock album!

This is my second Deep Purple album in less than a week. I'm glad to say I enjoyed this one more; there are a few songs that I'm familiar with, and I know how much shouting to expect. The proto-metal sound is more obvious to me here than it was on 'Deep Purple In Rock', particularly in the soloing and vocals. These songs are catchier and more discernible. I'm still not blown away. Highlights: Highway Star, Maybe I'm a Leo, Pictures of Home (the instrumental outro is bananas)

Great guitar

Jykevää hard rockia. Kovia Deep Purplen kappaleita tällä levyllä. Muuten ihan perus hyvää. Parhaat: Highway Star, Smoke On The Water, Space Trucking

Overall decent hard rock album for it's time. There were some interesting moments throughout the album, but nothing that made me feel anything strongly really. Smoke on the Water, no doubt, is the track that stood out the most, it is the group's biggest hit after all (to the point of becoming one of the forbidden riffs to play at a guitar store). The story behind the song was cool though, which I never knew till I dived in.

Anyone who owns a guitar MUST give this album a minimum of 3 stars for the number of times we have all played the riff "Smoke On The Water" 🎸

2 stars for the music, and 1 extra star for the nostalgia! Dad rock yes, but I still enjoyed it :)

It was okay.

Now this is what should be playing on the radio when speeding around the GTA sandbox! Big guns, big cocks, big engines, big tits!! Turn the women on the way you start a car. Yeah...start that business, baby. Territorial pissing at its best. Gotta let this one go.

Prog Rick meets metal

Se pensar nos dias de hoje está datado, mas para época acredito que tenha sido bem atual...várias mudanças de ritmos interessantes.

It's fine

not their best ...

First time for this album. It was good.

Smoke Under Water - Banger. Space Truckin' - Unexpected banger. A bit too expected maybe? Not too many standouts. 6/10

I remembered the first song from Rock and Roll Racing on the SNES and I think I was most surprised by how compressed and sound font-y it managed to feel. Rest of the album never picked up from there.

Lots of noodling guitars and blues-y riffs. Not bad, certainly better than Smoke on the Water suggests.

Couple decent tracks but again very 70s

good album for guys who have sex with their cars.

Old heavy metal is basically blues - see e.g. Maybe I'm a Leo on this album. Highway Star is pretty good on here, as are a few of the others. Smoke On The Water is probably the least effective of the bunch, maybe just because it's been so overplayed.

I’ll say it. Smoke on the Water sucks. However, the opening and closing track on this album rock pretty hard. I don’t hate this band as much as I thought I did.

We need half-stars here. This is a 3.5 star album, import for early hard rock, but it hasn't survived as well as many other artists/albums of the era.

It was fun to listen to this album again. It has been a long time. They certainly had a distinctive sound, that was present throughout the album.

It was ok, not great, but ok. Smoke on the water is a track I remember with fondness from my youth so I’ve rounded up to a three

Was excited about this, loving metal and all. Even the albums namesake I used to love in my teenage years. Sadly didn't do a lot for me. A lot of the other NWOBHM were better, if still not my thing. Very average.

everything is just in the way until Ash Williams favourite song Space Truckin’ comes on

3/5 for Smoke on the Water. Lazy is good too 👍

Good album. I like Made in Japan better as most of this album is on that.

I liked this better than Made in Japan. It feels more focused but still feels like jam band meets metal and ultimately isn’t really for me. I really don’t like the screams vocals at all.

Interesting I liked it

Fuck boomers and their overrated 2 chords riffs man

What can be said about the artists that wrote thee seminal jam song that every, I mean every, high school garage band played at one time. Prior to having the chops to play ‘Stairway To Heaven’, which came second, the first one learned was always, ‘Smoke on the Water’. Like most jam bands, DP likes to beat the heck out of the same riffs for days..so don’t expect a lot of changes/B sections in their songs.

It's solid classic rock, and while I don't like very bluesy rock, this toes the line, only slightly more than a Black Sabbath. Overall, I am surprised and impressed at how much I did like it, but it won't be a new part of my regular rotation or anything. "Space Truckin'" was likely my favorite track, as it sounds very proto-stoner rock.

MARRY... the rhythm section F**K... the keyboards KILL... the singer (Sorry Ian Gillen)

Brings back memories. Not a big fan though.

Took me back.

Vibey wibey

Yeah. Wish the recording wasn’t so muddy. Smoke on the water is a classic, hands down. Can’t see putting the whole album on.

Some classic tracks, a lot of forgettable proto-prog.

Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are classics, Lazy has an awesome guitar solo, but the rest is a bit forgettable.

Too much jamming

Not too bad. Smoke on the water is a classic of course.

Dad rocks finest

I think this record was more important historically. It's not that it doesn't hold up, but you can't sense the impact it had at the time.

Super simple stuff. I was surprised when smoke on the water came on, it wasn't a teenager learning acoustic guitar playing to a wonky metronome..

Good solid British rock. Music to make models to, well today it was, anyway.

Haven’t heard in ages. Way more metal sounding than I remembered. No wonder they are always mentioned as early metal. Good for educational purposes.

Machine Head is another album I feel like I’ve heard millions of times, whether or not I actually have. Given the date of its release, I imagine this to be some of the earliest heavy rock with metal elements. Favorite Track = Space Truckin’

I had this on in the car while running errands with my son this morning. I didn't pay much attention but it wasn't something I absolutely loved or hated.

Better than I expected. Would be a 3.5 if that were an option

Ok 1001 albums generator plz try to keep at least a week between a live album and a studio album by the same band lol. Not bad to listen to this - my favorite track was actually a bonus track and I didn’t even realize it!

Weird, I guess this is the 70s but it just sounded...like generic old rock?

Pretty solid classic rock. The whole thing felt like one big jam sesh. I really liked the story behind smoke on the water, as it made the song even more enjoyable!

Classic rock album but has lost some of its luster over the years. Liked the opener Highway Star a lot, though the album goes downhill from there. Not to say it's ever 'bad' (although Never Before comes close), but I caught myself nodding off while listening to it several times. At times it's because of repetitive riffs, other times it's just kind of boring. Fun listen overall, but gets upstaged by other rock albums. Fav. Tracks - Highway Star, Smoke On the Water

nice energy

Solid rock. Plus Smoke on The Water

I mean I guess? It's not terrible. Organ wails.

Liked ok

Ich habe (wegen meiner Unwissenheit) etwas anderes erwartet. Ich dachte, dass Deep Purple etwas "härter" ist/war. Mir hat es aber gefallen, habe gleichzeitig mit mehr Besonderem gerechnet..

The lyrics … it would score higher with better lyrical content. Alas, there were no poets in DP, but they played great.

Really rather enjoyed this. Not a million miles away from Cream, in terms of the playing is pretty great and it's not overly-heavy. Should probably give it a 4

Another case of - they had more than one song.

Not a fan, but good album.

🤘🏽

Rockig, aber dieser typische Deep Purple Beat geht mir nicht so rein.

Has Smoke on the Water. Outside of that pretty mediocre.

Little Dad rocky but still liked it

Machine head rules and so does smoke on the water

Good stuff. I’ll never love early metal, but I certainly like it. Pictures of Home is great. Love the story behind the album. I was a bit too young to appreciate Machine Head on its initial release, but have grown to appreciate it over the years.

Some early iteration of dad rock here. The guitar riffs were cool. Smoke on the water is just story telling.

Fun album, with some absolute classics on it

Standout Tracks: "Highway Star," "Smoke on the Water" Lyrics- 4/5 Vocals- 3/5 Instrumentals- 5/5 Vibes- 3/5 Overall: 3/5 This is your standard 70s classic rock album. For me, this album was a nice listen but nothing really "leapt" out at me after the two recognizable tracks. The guitar was insanely impressive, but really did not leave a lasting enough impression for me to remember any of the songs besides the two I already knew.

SMOOOKE ON THE WAAAAATEEEEERRRR 7/10

I feel like this album should come with some shitty weed or LSD. I'm very much hit or miss on this era of rock; don't usually care for it outside of the hits but thought this was respectable and hey, "Smoke on the Water". 7/10.

I remember listening to this when it first came out, too heavy rock for me then, except for the radio hits, but I enjoyed it today!

It’s fun

A whole generation (or 3) of people were turned off Deep Purple by the opening riff of Smoke on the Water. Started with high adrenaline heavy metal which fucked HARD, and descended into mediocre rock. Still, much better than expected.

Two songs were good, the rest I don't even remember.

Hard Rock

3.8. Should be a 4

Not a heavy-ish metal fan, but you can't go wrong with Smoke in the Water anytime. This is Deep Purples best song by far. The final four tracks starting with Smoke.... improve upon the first four tracks which left me "meh".

Remarkably enjoyable. I've never had much of a reason to dip in to Deep Purple but this was soulful, it rocked, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable listen. I probably wouldn't throw it on again but I didn't wish most of these songs away.

This did not hit me straight out of the gate, and based on the first song I was expecting cheesy, generic rock. But by the time the vocals kicked in on Lazy I was properly grooving along. Definitely a pleasant surprise. Highlights: Maybe I’m a Leo, Smoke on the Water, Lazy

Nicht schlecht

Has the major hits, really all you need for Deep Purple

Sounds pretty dated and generic, almost Spinal Tap like at times. Still an enjoyable listen.

Helt ok.

Like so many things in life, this album starts off at a high level and then falls into the middle class. What's most annoying are the solos and repetitions that feel like they last for hours.

Totally not a genre I like, but not gonna lie - Space Truckin’ just hits the spot sometimes.

- pretty solid - Smoke on the Water is a classic - enjoyed Space Truckin’ as well

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

yeahh!! smoke on the water!!!

Hey, this is a pretty good album but why does this 1001 list have such a boomer rock slant to it? I will admit.. Smoke on the Water is probably one of the first riffs I learned when I picked up the guitar for the first time. It's just so damn accessible. Highway Star, already a good song, has a whole section of it that is not played on the radio.. or at least wasn't in my head and there are sick instrument solos in it. I can imagine this is the best of Deep Purple. At the end of the day, this makes classic rock album list... idk surely though this slot could offer a more complete album from someone else? I had never pulled up the lyrics to Smoke on the Water before this.. it's literally about the troubles they had trying to secure a place to record this album. I love when musicians so plainly talk about an experience they've had through their music in a meta sort of way. Best Track: Smoke on the Water

Average rock album, some interesting song concepts.

It is exactly what it says on the tin. Good, straight ahead, hard rock, keyboard-infused, 70s rock and roll.

Better than expected but a mixed bag.

Very enjoyable. Not quite heavy enough for me. Some nice songs. Smoke on the water.... Ugh

- Get's off to a poor start with a turgid song about a car. - Like the previous Deep Purple album, it does improve when the organ bits come in. - The riff to Smoke On The Water has lost its lustre over the years, but I enjoyed discovering the very literal nature of the lyrics and the story behind them. I feel like it's all a bit 'meh' really so it gets half-marks: 2.5 stars. But there's something about the big dumb riffs and big dumb lyrics of Space Truckin' in particular that makes me smile, so I'm roundin' up.

It was fine.

These guys are obviously talented musicians. Some good guitar, solos, and cool effects from the keyboards. But seriously, do we need another white guy singing about his car? A lot of it felt pretty cheesy, but I will be giving it three stars for its place in rock history And that awesome organ sound

2 good songs. Others pass.

oh like the simpsons

The only one I knew was Smoke on the Water. This whole album reminds me of my early childhood, but more of what it feels like to look at a blurry photograph and to be at the rides at the carnival. And the basement of the Blake’s where their teenage sons introduced me to Kiss. I was what, 5? The potter scared me a little. The had the painting of dogs playing cards around a table, too. I did like that.

Two Deep Purple albums close together. Didn’t love either, didn’t hate them.

Alot better than I was expecting for Deep Purple 3/5

Some classic songs here but I like the less-polished In Rock more. Space Truckin' is great. Ritchie Blackmore has one of the most original guitar sounds of anyone from this era.

Great classic album, Jojo moment

Love the organ. Subject matter often isn't the most relatable but super impressive classical solos. Not a great album but worth it just for Smoke on the Water.

The guitarist shreds on this album. Everything else is kinda baseline. Funny that the most famous song on this album is the easiest guitar song to learn ever.

Not bad. Less heavy guitar screech than others of this ilk. Good roadtrip company.

5.5/10

It’s got some classic rock hits. Kind of a good mix of blues rock with a little more hard rock/metal influence. I wish hush was on it

Dad rock, kinda boring

It was fine . I have heard this one before.

sadly the first thing I think of is guitar hero.
