Reviews (page 8 of 14)
Worth buying.
The classic Deep Purple and arguably this captures them on top form. Some great tracks here - Highway Star, Never Before, Smoke on the Water (of course) and When a Blind Man Cries - the musicianship is exceptional, and their sound is a lovely mix of heavy rock and melody courtesy of Richie Blackmore's mellifluous guitar and Jon Lord's keyboards. A couple of throwaway tracks - Lazy especially - prevents this being an absolute classic
A little better than your standard classic rock album
Good riffs, aged shockingly well
I'm not a big fan of Deep Purple, but listening to this release, I get the reasons for this so-long hype. They are consistent in their albums, and Machine Head is somehow the summary of their potential. A classical album does not become classical for no reason.
Can hear the precursor to Metallica
highway star, smoke on the water hammond organ rocks pretty hard lyrics mention zappa concert burning down the casino before recording at the time I was reading zappa's book which also mentions it.
Four star classic. Can hear lots of Zep in here.
It became classic for a reason: these songs are pure rock ragers. Who cares FM radio played them to death?
Pure 70s rock in the most fun way possible. Some absolutle bangers on this one. I don't think it's in my favorites of all time, but I really enjoyed it.
Hairy space/prog/metal. Put on your best sleeveless denim jacket and start air guitaring away. Also, best not wash for a week to get the full experience. Best Tracks: Highway Star; Smoke on Water; Space Truckin'
Hey has anyone ever heard that song smoke on the water before it's a pretty cool song haha
This album rocks and delivers on everything you would associate with Deep Purple. It fits right in with the advent of Zeppelin, Sabbath, and the hard rock scene. It's a direct progenitor of hair metal and rock acts like Van Halen, Crüe, Judas Priest. It's good throughout and should get most people away from just listening to "Smoke on the Water".
It's undeniably a big stupid album but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Only dip shits don't like this album. It's greattttt
These guys just rock… highway star is an all-time classic… good music
Classic rock like a precursor to AC/DC. Includes the overplayed Smoke On The Water - the other songs sound good too.
As is probably the case for many, the only song I recognized before diving into this album was "Smoke on the Water", so I was pleasantly surprised (as someone who doesn't really listen to hard rock or heavy metal) to enjoy most of the songs, even adding a couple to my personal playlists. It was also cool to peak at the Wikipedia page and learn about the inspiration for "Smoke"!
This groups was good by what I remember… The album opens with highway star the sonic is like an overexcited catapult of energy crashing into you only stopping for the awesome guitar solo. It’s an excellent opener though; maybe me from some 20 or so days ago would’ve written the length of the song as “ too pretentious” for an opener at 6 minutes, but it doesn’t feel like 6 minutes be honest. Deep purple just have the formula for long songs! Next is maybe I’m a leo it’s a slower track but still keeps the band’s essentials in tact it’s also quite playful for the song’s intro that bit goes but it’s cool while it was there. Pictures of home starts with a brief drum solo it’s quite a cool song to be fair it’s only three verses spanning 5 minutes but still cool. Strangely enough, it’s probably the way he sings it that makes the song unique. An odd favourite! Never before is good but not as good it’s essentially a dive into more of a pop rock sound it works really well for the album, especially the chorus and the slowed down bridge. Smoke on the water has one of the most simple but effective guitar riffs ever ( even I could probably do it). The bass line is also very cool and complements the song quite a bit. As far as the core of the song goes, the verse tell a good story and while the chorus doesn’t lyrically fit up too much with the verses it’s still a top tier chorus and a good song. Now the penultimate track lazy the intro is much more electronic than the others but it somehow works then the song goes into a more organic sound still with the cool keys though . The song is slow and fairly long but after the song’s 4 minute intro there’s a small sonic in there it’s alright not the best, especially with the harmonica solo. Way to ruin a near perfect album. The album finishes with space truckin the lyrics are dumb but it’s good feels like lazy was the end of the set list and this is the encore to the album decent sonic though. Well I must say it was close to a 5 fine it didn’t reach the heights of lets say child in time or flight of the rat on deep purple in rock it still was a consistently good effort that I would have returned to and I still will but lazy is such a drag that I will never touch again.
hadde faktisk aldri høyrt heile albumet før
Genre: Hard Rock 4/5 Oh, hell yes. Rip the hair of your balls rock and roll. It's motherfucking Machine Head. A classic album with classic songs from one of UK's best, the hard rockin' supergroup Deep Purple. An album I've listened to many, many times, and one that continues to reward repeat listens, Machine Head has some of rock and roll's biggest moments ever, and not just from the 70s. The riff from Smoke on the Water is one of popular music's most recognizable licks around, which some call simple and lame, while others deem it iconic and necessary. Deep Purple's synthesis of blues and hard rock wasn't the most unique at the time, but Deep Purple's technical talent set them apart from other hard rock outfits. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Ian Paice on drums, Roger Glover on bass, the classically trained Jon Lord on keys, and the incomparable Ian Gillan on lead vocals, made for one astounding rock group. Each musician enjoys their moment in the spotlight on this, as each song gives ample time for extreme noodling. The opener, another classic single, Highway Star, gives Blackmore and Lord plenty of time to showcase their brilliant playing. Space Truckin' provides time for Ian Paice to show off his solo talents, along with Pictures of Home (which even finds time for a Roger Glover bass solo!), all while Ian Gillan gives us some of rock's biggest and best vocal performances throughout this album. Great album that'll grow some hair on your chest, and keep you head banging till the final fade out.
I love Highway Star. This is a great blues-based hard rock album anchored by Smoke on the Water.
4/26/2022 Today's Album: "Machine Head" by Deep Purple - This album is some serious dad rock if I've ever heard it, tapping into that early metal sound while maintaining a mostly generic 70's rock aesthetic. There's a lot of fun performances on here and I think the production is quite nice, but it's definitely an album that caters to it's demographic and just sticks to it. It's pretty much a by the numbers 70s rock outfit full with rock organ, bluesy solos, and 4 chord structures. There's even that classic hit Smoke On The Water, which sounds even more like dad rock in this context than it already did. I'm not saying this album is bad, but I also understand that I am someone who tends to like this kind of music and it really doesn't do much outside of just performing the genre. That being said, if you like dad rock, this album is stellar. The solos throughout are absolutely mind melting and the 7 minute track Lazy is just an all out jam session. I like how many ideas this band traverses in a single song and it really helps to make this album stand out from your typical rock group. There are songs that don't hit as hard as others on this project, but with a runtime of 40 minutes over only 8 tracks, the songs are over before you know it and you're onto the next impressive solo or headbanging chorus. Honestly, this feels like a record that I would be really really on the fence with, but the instrumental breaks and solos just keep bringing me in. Overall, I think this is an above average 70s rock album, but it also doesn't do a ton to really revolutionize the genre. Listen to this one if you like dad rock or can sit through any track if it's got a killer guitar solo. Highlights: Highway Star, Maybe I'm a Leo, Pictures of Home, Smoke On The Water, Lazy, Space Truckin', When A Blind Man Cries Score: 7.5/10 Dad rock, but some of the best of it's breed.
dudes rock
Good
Listening to this album, I could just hear the influences on a bunch of 80s bands. Like if you told me Motley Crue, GNR, or Van Halen grew up listening to this stuff, I could totally see it. The entire album has pretty awesome guitar
Like it!
035036503530! Great album with some all time great songs. "Highway Star" is one of my favorite Rock Band songs to play even if it gets tiring by the end. "Smoke On The Water" is obviously one of the most well known songs of all time. I think every guitar player has played that classic riff at least once. My favorite track though is "When A Blind Man Cries" which unfortunately didn't make it on the original track listing. I just love the groovy band jam vibe of it.
Banging proto-metal in the opening and closing portions of the album, they revert to blues appropriation, as was the custom at the time, in the middle portion. Fave track - "Smoke on the Water" is obviously iconic, but "Highway Star" and "Space Truckin'" are prolly more fun to listen to....
Smoke on the Water is obnoxiously classic at this point. The whole album I feel follows the trends of the previous ones - good, but not amazing, little highlights or low points, great to listen to but too forgetable to come back to. Lazy is a stand-out, so is Smoke on the Water. 4/5
An album with some of the best known Deep Purple tracks. An old friend, the ol' reliable, you name it. No surprises, no outbursts of joy. Just a really enjoyable portion of classic rock. Highlight: Space Truckin'
Bière Molson et corvette, rock and roll baby.
I know, Smoke on the Water has become a bit of a cliche with its highly recognizable, simplistic main riff. But listening to this music with fresh ears and putting oneself in the context of 1972, when heavy metal was still in its formative years, it's really fucking good. The combination of heavy, riff-based guitar and distorted Hammond organ stands out. 4 stars.
Smoke on water. Bam Bam baaam
Classic hard rock, sounds like it is the example of the genre.
Starts off strong with "Highway Star" but I found "Maybe I'm a Leo" to be a bit of a let-down. Everything after that is a banger, though! Great album, 4.5/5 stars
Nice, original songs, some of them classics
Great guitar play but the rest of the album is just decent to good. Bit disappointed, expected a bit more progressive or heavier stuff. Seems to be going more into the direction of for example The Who, without ever reaching that greatness
Not as great as “Live in Japan,” but obviously amazing
Classic guitar rock
Classic 70's power rock with some shades of psychedelia from the late 60's in there. A very powerful album for it's time.
I'll acknowledge that this isn't my version of heavy metal, but it is clean, finds its groove and executes well from start to finish. I can certainly appreciate it as a solid early hard rock album.
I enjoyed it more than I expected!
heard most of these before on live album, definitely solid sound.
». Robert n'a jamais rien écouté d'autre.
4/5 that was a good one!
Some classic tracks such as Smoke on the Water and Highway Superstar, and I really enjoyed the energy and musicianship.
Classic rock, revs up my mornings
Classic. Jon Lord's organ and Blackmore's guitar dominate.
Another classic I never got round to checking out. Of course I already know the majority of the songs. I've always loved Highway Star, and it is still the highlight of the album as far as I'm concerned. Just a really great rock album that is rightfully loved by many.
4/5
classic 70s rock, whilst I think later generations have iterated and created newer and more unique sounds, this generation of musicians will remain somewhat timeless
This album contains a classic hit that most people heard one time too many. Even with that crux the rest of the album is amazing. Space trucking, highway star, lazy, ... all deserve as much adoration as smoke on the water. Almost 50 years old and still timeless
Hørte på albumet tre ganger, veldig stilig. Mye keyboard. Likner litt på the doors, men muligens litt "mørkere" i følelsen. Smoke on the water og highway star åpenbare bangers
I would never have guessed this album is from 1972! Way ahead of their time and very metal rock. Smooooooke on the waaaaater
Amazing album. Probably the Deep Purple album I've heard the most.
Rock
BUH BUH BUHH BUH BUH DUH DUH BUH BUH BUHH DUH DUH I actually really liked this one Lazy and pictures of home slap
4.5/5
Deep Purple is one of those artists that I have always heard of, but never checked out. Aside from "Smoke on the Water", I had never even heard another Deep Purple song before. Once I finished Machine Head, I now understood the praise and recognition this band gets. Simply put, it rocks! It's not as generic as I was expecting it to be. While not a fair assumption to make, I tend to find most classic rock pretty tame. Deep Purple didn't merely meet my expectations, but they exceeded them!
Great album
Smoke on the Water is a classic.
11/2 Just some classic hard rock. Standout Tracks: Highway Star, Smoke On The Water, Lazy, Space Truckin', When A Blind Man Cries
A classic for a reason
There are some classic bangers on here that are so high above the other tracks. Solid!
The album that spawned 'Smoke on the Water' - written after the casino the the album was to be recorded in burnt down during a Frank Zappa concert! Great British rock - tinged with no many genres. Fab.
Awesome.
Smoke on the water.. The rest isn't fab, but it's Smoke on the water.
short album, but very iconic rock. Highway Star & smoke on the water <3.
I'm not a fan of metal but this album is one of the few that I can listen to in its entirety. Smoke on the water and Highway Superstar are iconic head-banger tracks of course, but I also enjoyed Lazy and Space Truckin' and especially the amped up organ which gives them a very distinctive sound. The background story on Smoke is interesting - how some idiot with a flare gun at a Frank Zappa concert burned their concert venue down. This is a solid 3.5 for me, but I'll round it up because its iconic and still rocks 50 years later.
Some absolute bangers but not without its flaws (pace is slow in places). Just shy of a 5.
Highway Star is the most underrated Hard Rock song of all time Smoke on the Water is a classic
Nice
Quality stuff if you ask me!
Required to listen at 11!
Stellar riffage from Blackmore. Gillan does his best Plant impression and Paice tries some Bonham, and both do a decent job. Not sure if this inspires me to dive into their catalogue, but a very enjoyable listen. Choice cuts: Highway Star, Maybe I’m A Leo, Space Truckin’
pretty good rock album. Enjoyed it and knew a few songs on it.
nice space/blues rock album. Great riffs, lyrics can be a bit silly.
Smoke in the water Muy buen disco
glassic
I enjoyed this more than I expected to. Generally I'm not a fan of this sound, but I really liked the drums and guitar. Favorite track: Pictures of Home
70. Vou acertar no preço certo. Desce as escadas. Não tropeces, Henry Mancini. MotA: Lazy "Nobody gonna take my car, I'm gonna race it to the ground"
First time listening except for Smoke on the water. A very rad album.
Smoke on the Water has that one guitar motif i've heard around before. Nice to see it has a name now. Oh. the lyrics of lazy sure are something.
Pretty good dad rock with a few bangers on there. Highway star is ultimate cock rock. Probably didn’t quite deserve a 4 but a 3 was harsh
Fantastic!
4
Great start, classic groove rock, excited for tomorrow
Enjoyed this one way more than I thought I would. I hadn’t heard anything by these guys other than “Smoke on the Water” and found the rest of the album to be equally solid and enjoyable.
Better than I was expecting. Not a fan of "Smoke on the Water", but "Lazy" is and amazing track. And I discovered "Maybe I'm A Leo" and "Pictures of Home" which are also bangers. Love Deep Purples organ work.
That organ shreds
I dig this more than I thought I would! The drums are sick and honestly so is everything else. If Pineapple Express took place in the 70s, this could be the soundtrack. If you needed a default example of 70s hard rock, they would probably be it. Pretty fun album!
What a fun album. I’d argue one of the better classic rock pieces of its time, but there’s still better out there.
Similar to Black Sabbath not so much in sound or style, but in how I can hear how much they influenced a lot of 70s rock. I get the influence, makes sense this is on the list. Blackmore’s solo and rhythm riff on ‘Highway Star’ are totally high octane, and ‘Smoke On The Water’ is forever etched on the walls whether we like it or not, but this isn’t on my personal favorites list.
Countless hard rock classics in a single album -- most every notable Great White song is from this album.
To my surprise, I enjoyed this alot
Proper cheesy dad power rock 😂m but absolutely mint, can't not enjoy it. Saved a couple tracks to a playlist. Smoke on the Water is obv a classic
Rocky, funky (in places), a decent listen. Easy on the ear. Highlight - Highway Star, When A Blind Man Cries but they're all good. Lowlight - Smoke On The Water 8 out of 10.
Enjoyable romp of classic rock.
These guys are kind of over the top! Some SERIOUS keys and base going on. 2.5 really good songs out of 7, so I'mma call it a 4.
Did I miss some albums here? I'm fuckin livid! My asshole was flapping during this. Fuckin love to drive angry to this. I'm like a roll n rock Derek Bird when this comes on.
Well good to hear them again ! Enjoyed listening as always and some tracks are amazing but I still love Burn. I wondered what group would feature more than once. Happy that Deep Purple do considering they’re weren’t a chart band. ****
Some classics on there
Yeah fair play this was pretty good especially after listen to it after Jaques Brel!
Classic. Good timing heading into the weekend and especially after the previous albums.
Ik kan dit wel waarderen. Klinkt goed!
Fantastic album. Best one I've had randomly picked so far
no complaints, I love the fuzzy sounds of the 70s on this album
7/10. Nothing to write home about, but had a good sound, and a few pretty good songs as well.
Classic
I knew a lot of these songs and really enjoyed listening to this album!
Now here is some classic rock! Fantastic album, listened all the way through, it's got your classic Smoke on the Water (easiest way to learn the guitar I hear) and Space Trucking. I enjoyed the other songs as well and hope we get their album with Hush on it in the future. Album cover is also classic, looking at their reflections in the metal. Very metal.
How to forget those songs, listening to them in my youth. Radio Universal in Mexico City
Great
Ah, the album that houses the most classic, classic-rock riff of all time. One riff to rule them all. The riff that made me excited to play guitar. I don't need to name it, you know what it is. I like how few tracks are on here, and I like how long and exploratory some of them get. As a whole, it's nothing crazy, but an enjoyable listen front to back, and I liked more than half the songs, so I'd say it's pretty great. Favorite tracks: Smoke on the Water, Lazy, Pictures of Home. Album art: This is a classic one for sure. It looks like the band is staring in disapproval at an embossed piece of sheet metal. Much more creative than your typical band photo album cover. 4/5
0 - 3 - 5 hahaha funny.
Classic rocky boy
Hrm. There’s something honest about this style of rock from this era. Is a win.
Mellow rock. Very 70s/80s
Kneiter goede plaat die in elke rock collectie thuishoort, vooral erg genoten van het nummer: "when the blind man cries"
Smoke on the water
Whether you know it or not, you’ve heard part of this record. Smoke on the Water and Highway Star are two songs that are fully engrained in our culture and it is hard to escape them, for better or worse. This is a pretty short record (especially for 70s hard rock). I’ve listened to other Deep Purple and I think I prefer some of their other output, but this is a good starting point. The organ tones on this are something to behold. Favorite song: Smoke on the Water (cliche I know but the riff is still killer) Least favorite song: Lazy
Ritchie blackmore at his finest
That's definitely rock (hair rock?) A+ guitar
Really cool classic rock vibes.
Rock and roll classic!
ok . i doubt ill intentionally listen again . but smoke of the water is an exception
it's more than just smoke on the water...heh
Solid! Lazy fav track - If you like this stuff, check out 'The Sword.'
Gritty ditties, roadhouse dirty grooves
A wonderful, powerful album.
Got kicked out of the guitar store
Some classic songs
uhhh.. not my thing at all. I can recognize that the craftsmanship is great but I never felt the heaviness in the sound as I do with other hard rock bands like Zepplin & Stooges. I think my biggest problem was the vocals and the production, both were underdeveloped and kinda annoying. Highway Star is a pretty good song but everything else went in one ear and out the other. sorry!
Deserves its place on the list
It's just very average rock to me. The two big hits are massively overrated, in my opinion, and the deep cuts are nothing special. I don't even think I have anything else to say about it because it was pretty standard and generic.
I recognise that this is seen as a vital influential album, but its a mixed bag for me. I quite like Highway Star and Space Truckin, but I hate that Hammond Organ sound that crops up frequently and is so overbearing.
Not my favorite album for sure. Smoke Under Water was all that I actually enjoyed. Very dated rock and roll.
Listening to this album was interesting after listening to so much Metallica and similar artists. The influence of Deep Purple is clear. This album felt like another iteration of the genre and it didn't stand out to me at first, honestly. However, I found it enjoyable and I appreciate the significance of this album.
There were a few songs I recognized from all over. A lot of the music felt very samey. And blended pretty easily into the background. Good. But nothing attention grabbing.
What a blast from the past. I seem to remember Highway Star being on Rock and Roll Racing a absolute gem of a game on the Super Nintendo.
Kinda corny, very 70s sounding. Guitar solo on literally every single song (sometimes multiple solos) which just felt unnecessary. Some of the solo's were very good though (highway star). The actual songs outside of the solo's were mostly good, but nothing amazing. And again very corny lyrics from a modern perspective. like a 7/10 probably,
Not bad, but feels a bit played out.
67/100
Happy to have listened I guess 🤷🏼♂️
3.0/5 - gets old pretty fast.
Surprisingly enjoyable! Pretty catchy, hard rock kinda stuff. It's not something I'm likely to put on myself, but I'd be happy listening to it if someone else spun it. 3.5 stars.
no siinä oli kirkasta kiekumista ja menevää meininkiä saakeli
Childhood memories. "Smoke on the Water" is quintessential 1970s music.
Highway Star probably better as a song and as entertainment than Smoke on the Water, everything else... primitive rock 'n roll.
Interestingly – this seems to be a precursor to hair metal that will come 10 years later
Helt ok album
Sometimes good music doesn't need to be complex. After listening to albums packed with dense lyrics and big philosophical themes, there's something refreshing about a record that just says, "Here's a killer riff—have fun," and what's more iconic than the most practiced beginner guitar riff of all time in "Smoke on the Water" Some people would probably call this boomer rock, but Machine Head reminds me why those albums became classics in the first place: heavy (for the time) riffs, a fantastic vocalist, memorable guitar work, and not a single song I'd skip. It may not push boundaries or reinvent rock music, but it doesn't really need to—it just does what it sets out to do extremely well. 3/5.
Smoke in the Water is the reason I heard this nearly 20 years ago. At the time, I downloaded the whole album but only really enjoyed the single. After listening today I think I get why, though there's heavy metal magic spread throughout the album, it's got a star track that goes beyond the pull of the album. This is listenable because it's not mediocre anywhere, it just doesn't concentrate the magic frequently enough to grab my attention. They fix these things in the live performances, and the bands they influence can tell the good shit apart. I'd buy it because it's a cool addition to the collection, not because it's a record I need. 3.2/5
3.5. Classic. Bästa låt, pictures of home
its fine, i just have a vendetta against music like this. sick of it
Very nice guitars and bass and stuff catchy but not anoying best song maybe I'm a leo worst song Smoke on the water
not great but pretty good. lots of fun memories from this record
Deep Purple have never been my favorite hard rock band. They have their moments, but this album is mostly not my cup of tea. It comes across to me as so flashy when there's not a lot going on, and the production is just not good. I can forgive them for the constraints of a mobile studio, and touring schedule, but it's just not an album I find myself jonesing to listen to. I don't think it's a LAZY album, I just don't think they puts much effort as the could've into it. Not to say the whole thing is mid, Pictures of Home is particularly amazing, and there's moments scattered throughout that are pretty nice, but then there's songs like Smoke on the Water that are showy and acting all badass, when it's really just a dude playing a few strums and saying "that's good enough for a song :)" I just don't understand the hype for this album. Deep Purple have a lot better sounding albums than this that actually succeed in being flashy and at least somewhat badass
It’s good, not Sabbath good, but it’s good. It’s all a little too worked out for my taste. I like things on the edge of chaos when it comes to harder rock music, and it’s just a little too worked clean.
Yeah it's good and everything, but i had their "Made in Japan" live album just yesterday, so I already experienced two hours worth of them. Kinda over it
I had admittedly listened to All Hail West Texas by The Mountain Goats before this, so my lyrical standards were admittedly on another level. I really dog a lot of this, but in spots it just felt corny. I have heard a lot of my dad‘s friends call this one of their favorite records of all time. It’s just not there for me.
A very good earlyish hard rock album. 3.5/5.
Degelijke rockplaat verder.
it was okay, felt repetitive
JL : 3, Highway Star A : 3, Never Before (tho smoke on the water is a classic)
353/1089 not really my music but honestly didn’t mind it it was the kind if more chill old rock that i can enjoy 60/100
Solid album indefinitely deserves a spot on the list. Three stars.
It’s a classic album. I’m glad I heard it. I won’t listen again
One of the original 3 power chord rock bands. My dad had this album when I was growing up. Smoke on the Water is almost always one of the first songs a young guitarist learns to play.
Sok
It has highway star :D
Guarantee if I’d grown up listening to this my mind would be blown right now, but I didn’t so it’s not - fun, but I doubt I’ll be running back for more
This really is a crossroads from blues and rock into a heavier sound. Smoke On The Water
Didn't really feel like listening to hard rock/ metal yesterday so I didn't, only listened to the first song and it was alr. Also I didn't understand why it was hard rock and not metal, when paranoid is metal and not hard rock
Kinda long, listened to the whole thing and liked it a bit more than I thought I would though it started to mush together near the end
that smoke on the water riff will live in my head until i turn to dust
fine
Holy Dad Rock, batman! I am starting to feel like I need a boilerplate response for albums like this. Do I like it? No. Do I hate it? No. It's perfectly ok. It's fine. I'm neutral.
They’ve got the most awful artist bio on Spotify lol. Some great guitar licks. Ive never listened to deep purple before, seems a very solid album.
Shoutout Frank Zappa for Smoke On The Water
It was decent, just not really my kind of music.
Good hard/blues rock album. "Smoke on the Water" is the albums most famous song, but the band plays well throughout. 3/5 Might listen again
Think the last two songs are actually the stand out tracks. Really interesting 60s flair (kinda disco?) i wasn’t expecting. Obviously Smoke on the Water is the most popular but other than that baseline it might be one of the weaker tracks on the album. Highway star is another great song.
A little bit samey but very good
I can see why this is considered an important early metal album. If I want to listen to 70’s British heavy/ amped-up blues, though (which I don’t often), I’ll stick to Sabbath, for Ozzie’s one-of-a-kind vocals.
Good fun, that
it’s not bad
Yeah that was fine
In my early teens, I thought Deep Purple was the greatest band in the world. Listening now, the songs are familiar, and thereby somewhat comfortable, but I’m not exhilarated. I'd say Deep Purple were significant, maybe trailblazers of heavy rock, but they're not a band I'd play now for pleasure, more an object for study. Smoke On The Water in particular unlistenable (so plodding); I was looking forward to the chorus of Space Truckin', but the song is not fun enough to play the whole thing... Overall, there’s not much that’s good, and there are tedious bits, I am slightly surprised to say Not Good, 4/10.
Deep Purple is a fascinating band and I love the hammond organ here. Ian Gillan has one of those voices where I don't know if I'd really say he's a good singer but it works pretty well here. (I think it works better in the second iteration of this lineup, when they were doing the creepy songs like Perfect Strangers and Knocking At Your Back Door, which is also the kind of Deep Purple I like more than this Smoke on the Water run, but that album isn't on here so whatever) That's not even getting into Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore, and man could we talk about Blackmore for days. Anyway it is a shame they are more interesting than good. I liked this a normal amount. More bands should have cool organ sections.
Classic rock classic.
Extra point for Smoke on the Water, otherwise just a bit boring..
Never really been a big fan of it, although it's not bad.
I respect it 3/5 Top tracks: Smoke on the Water, When a Blind Man Cries
ok
divorced dad rock
Great album. Like if zeppelin and Black Sabbath had a baby that fell down the Prog rabbit hole. Nothing that blew me away, but a pretty solid album with some great organ and guitar.
Kinda boring predictable melodies, but pretty heavy for the time and seems like it was a trailblazer in terms of heavy metal lineage, and there were some pretty enjoyable jams.
Highway Star - 4/5 Maybe I’m A Leo - 3/5 Pictures Of Home - 4/5 Never Before - 3.5/5 Smoke On The Water - 5/5 Lazy - 3.5/5 Space Truckin’ - 3/5 When A Blind Man Cries - 3/5
This is something my dad would've enjoyed. Im not my dad . I really liked "pictures of home" tho.
I genuinely enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I know Highway Star from Guitar Hero and I remember Smoke on the Water playing on the classic rock station. I had no idea they were considered prog-rock and heavy metal pioneers. There are some good songs on here, and there are some great songs on here. I played this on my way home from work and it made even an awful commute exciting. It isn'y my particular taste, but its pleasant and alive. nice.
3,5
There's a lot of tracks on here that could be very good, but fall short because of some annoying aspect in either the vocals or instrumentals. My favorite track was "Smoke on the Water".
better than i was expecting, similar to that queen 2 album
I can play part of one of these songs on guitar. Does that make me a guitarist?
Gubbrock. Mys.
A pretty decent first album listen from this list. I had no idea that Smoke On The Water, one of the songs I grew up with, was on this album and is sung by Deep Purple LMAOO Very nice guitar solos, rifs and just the guitar parts of all the songs were really good. The lyrics are repetitive in every song and it gets redundant quite easily.
Monster riffs, songs that don’t overstay their welcome and Smoke on the Water. Highway Star and Space Truckin’ also rock hard.
I never really paid attention to the lyrics of Smoke on the Water before - they made me chuckle with how literal the storytelling was. Banger riff though!
Dad Rock time!!!
Better than I thought it would be, a couple of great songs
Yeah I mean it was alright
Good album...wouldn't mind listening to it if it was on somewhere
Sigh.
Opening track is designed to be delivered directly into the veins of a teenage boy. Other tracks are a bit more sophisticated and can be enjoyed once you grow up a bit. Never Before feels ahead of its time. Honestly I think the big hit Smoke on the Water is my least favorite. Sure the guitar rift is famous, but feels kinda basic as the kids say.
This is what every hard-rocking album should strive to be. A heavy album with some really thick instrumentation, searing vocals, and electrifying solos. Some may say "Smoke on The Water" is overplayed (maybe in America), but here in the back-alleys of Europe, it's beloved across all generations, and whenever it's played it quickly gathers a crowd of people from 15 to 95. And even if you don't like it, how can you not like "Highway Star" "Lazy" and "Space Truckin'"? You're either soulless or just lying to yourself.
Guitar Hero-ass album
Not bad by any means, but I found Deep Purple In Rock to be a much more intersting album and superior in pretty much every way. Still, some good songs on here! My god, I cannot imagine being that in love with a car though.
If I hadn't read the allmusic review, I might have given this 4 stars for a good example of dirty 70s rock. But to hear this belongs alongside LZ4 and Paranoid (not to mention LZ1 and 2), I feel I have to make a statement.
Some cool tunes on here and clearly loads of talent but I find the band hard to love.
Organ and screaming. 5/10
Hmmhmmm I liked 4 songs, I don’t think that I can listen it like often, but sometimes when I will have mood Highway Star, Picture of home, smoke on the water, when a blind man cries (this one I likes especially more) Gives me vibe of Back to the future movie xD idk why
For mye gitar og mimimi
Smoke on the Water is good, the rest is average
Great early heavy metal, handful of recognizable tunes to any GenX music lovers.
easy listen, classics. very singstar rock
Favourite Songs: Lazy
Lot of riffs.
Classic rock radio staple, always a good listen.
It was fine....
gotta be the most known riff ever
Spinal Tap but in a good way.
Good listen
Deep Purple always did know how to put together a descent sound.
Smoke on the Water is a classic, but they’re not nearly as interesting as their peers
A solid classic rock album with one bonafide forever radio hit. Top tracks: "Smoke on the Water," "Highway Star"
--Highway Star...Guitar Hero! sick bass. sick guitar solo --Maybe I'm a Leo...a mid groove. Blackmore's guitar elevates it a little --Pictures of Home...love the organ solo. we get a bass solo, too! --Never Before...straightforward with a great closing organ solo --Smoke on the Water...that's one heavy bass --Lazy...what starts as a hard rock instrumental eventually becomes a blues groove. it's a head bopper --Space Truckin'...Ian Gillan's vocals get some time in the sun
Allman brothers hard rock, too much Richie blackmore Highway Star Smoke on the water
That classic rock sound where legacy overshadows a solid little album.
Yeah, ok rock from the time. Preferred to blues rock songs more tbh
I tell you who wasn’t lazy when it came to music - Len Houmous 2.8 6/8 Lazy
Deep purple are a sliding doors band for me. If I’d come across this first in Woolworths instead of Led Zep 1 and Paranoid I may be an equally big fan of Deep Purple, but I I didn’t and I’m not and while I can hear the quality of Highway star and smoke on the water is a true classic it’s just a bit too 70’s rock by numbers for me
Carried by "When a Blind Man Cries"
Really fun. SOTW is epic but I also liked Highway Star and Lazy
It’s an okay classic
It has some vlasisc like smoke on the water and highway star But i loved lazy it was a fine album When a blind wan cries is really good so a 4/5 on a good day if not then 3.5
Certainly a lot more listenable than a number of the preceding 70s rock albums that we’ve been given. Some real belters in here too. I enjoyed the prominence of the vocals alongside the guitar riffs!
Didn't realize Smoke On The Water was by them, but obviously I liked that one. They like repeating the same words a bunch during the songs.
Too much instruments/riffs/drums and not enough of the singing, which was really good.
Ok - so this is clearly from the genesis of metal/hard rock. Always struggle with Organ in the mix a bit, but it’s pretty cool musicianship overall. Leaves me a bit cold. Impressive, but not really anything I’d choose to listen to. 3
Smoke on the water is a classic song, fits really well into the whole album. Lazy's synth act as a standout, transitions from the original melody in Smoke on the Water, I think it really builds the whole soundscape into something more unique and more in line with what the band's sound is. Nothing particularly surprising other than the unique melodies for me, it's definitely fitting for the era, but I wouldn't view it as remarkable. Smoke on the water is a fun one though and it really shows how the band just plays around with its soundscape. Overall, pretty fun album, pretty ahead of its time and it just sounds pretty coherent as all the different instruments blend together. I like the melodies and guitar particularly but maybe that's because I am a guitarist myself. Rating right now, around 6.5.
Surprising smoke on the water is their hit. The rest is familiar and similar
Enjoyed
Decent album, though it did sound similar throughout the album. They can play guitar and drums well.
maybe it's because we've had a super long run of bland, boring albums but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. could also be because it's over before I got bored. either way-3.5 stars
I have questions. At first I thought I heard Space Monkey. I thought this had a fight club tie in and my mind raced trying to figure out the connection between Deep Purple and Meatloaf. Then I realized it was Space Trucking and I wondered how they knew back then about space? A little campy, this is the music kids of my generation made fun of whilst listening to much worse music like vanilla ice.
Heavy like I like, maybe a bit too much organ
Really enjoyed listening to highway star on my way to Tesco's in my 2012 ford fiesta.
I feel like if I said make a classic rock album it would sound something like this. Smoke on the Water is huge, but overall a fun listen.
Sure, the Organ, I get it. Also, the most practiced beginner guitar riff in history.
Wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did!
Not heard this for years! Always enjoyed the Deep Purple sound Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are the winners on this collection
Might just be getting burned out on the 70's rock.
Typical ‘70s hard rock. Not a fan of most of the songs. Smoke on the Water is obviously iconic but was never a song I cared much for. I didn’t hate it but wouldn’t choose to listen to it again.
Pretty pretty pretty good
Obviously smoke on the water Big fan of lazy and when a blind man cries, great guitar work but a little rinse and repeat at times
i appreciate the album and respect the influence it has had on music, but it’s just meh to me
didnt love as much as the last doors but still good (3.5)
Some decent riffs but come on… this is nowhere near Led Zeppelin IV.
consistent, talented instrument playing, super in sync, vocals are really suited to the sound. songs are a bit long for me
Algunos clásicos temazos
I like how blunt, hard and excitable the bass playing is on this record. Deep Purple is at its best when everything is very bold, forceful and insistent. Oddly it's the mega single Smoke on the Water which is my least favourite song, the only one I disliked. I think it lacks their energetic USP. I also take issue with the lyrics of the final track where blind people are essentially likened to mystical creatures. All in all though a bit of good fun.
Deep Purple gets a mid 3 from me, its on the acceptable side of hard rock thats for sure
Deep Purple were an integral band in the evolution of heavy metal and hard rock and you can hear why on Machine Head. I absolutely loved this album when I was a teenager, but Deep Purple haven't quite stuck with me the same way Led Zeppelin did. While listening to Machine Head today, I can appreciate their impact, and I did enjoy the album, but I don't think I'm any more likely to want to revisit this album in the future.
Sometimes it's rocking, overall a nice listen.
There's something about hearing that annoying Musical Theater™️ type voice overtop of an electric guitar that really does not do it for me. Sir why are we over-annunciating. Isn't this is supposed to be rock music? They earned the 3rd star only because of Smoke on the Water.
Classic rock
Deep Purple fit in a weird spot between hard rock and heavy metal. This album rocks hard, with big riffs and rollicking guitar and organ solos. "Smoke on the Water" of course has the most famous riff, but "Space Truckin" is the most complete song. At the same time, it never feels truly heavy. It's slow and plodding like heavy music, but without the heft behind it to really knock your socks off. There isn't a bad song here - "Lazy" is the closest because it's too long and the lyrics are lame - but all of the songs are also similar enough that unless you're really into that sound things are going to grow a bit old. This was hard for its time, but with the benefit of hindsight I find it not quite hard enough.
Dad rock
2.86
Very respected album but i didnt find that all interesting but its good nonetheless.
"Highway Star" "Smoke On The Water" and "Space Truckin'" are fun and I've already forgotten the rest. Would also help if they recorded it in a real studio. Three remasters, and it still sounds pretty archaic.
Not bad, short and sweet with some classics
Mención especial para When a Blind Man Cries.
put it on at work in the background. great album! favorite song is lazy
It’s aight. Classic rock sounds, a bit of too much standard blues in them but with some splashes of cool harmonic movements and fantastic soloing from Blackmore. I am not liking the vocals tho.
