The worst
Never heard of them, and I was immersed neck deep in all things music in 1987, so this one slipped under the radar or it sucks so bad it never made a ripple in the world of good music... Turns out it sucks super bad and does so in German/Slovenian. Who ever thought this should be heard by the masses? It has no place on this list, it's not cool or groundbreaking, it's fucking weird and you can't call it any one genre. It sounds like an angry German at a political rally, like it's taken from a movie not an album you'd sit down and "try" to enjoy. The vocals are god awful and rough, the music is just basic and noisy. There's something seriously wrong with a person who can sit through this entire 12 song, 60 minute ride, and enjoy it. There's no value to this album whatsoever (influence on industrial music or not) and it does not deserve a spot on a Top 3003 Albums list. Disappointing that this takes a spot from a truly deserving band/artist. Half a star from me.
That's the kind of industrial I despise. I wanted something like Einsturzende Neubauten or even something like Nine Inch Nails. "Opus Dei" feels a bit too poppy in places for an industrial album. The (probably) synthetic trumpets make it worse. That, along with the vocalist, makes me understand why this album is one of the lowest rated on the site. 1 star for "Opus Dei".

first album where i really didn’t know what to expect and the wikipedia blurb does not give you any clues either. after listening to it i’m still not really sure what it is. but i don’t like it.
Opus Dei by Laibach sounds like a prototype for Rammstein, only with less industrial metal and more keyboards. I can see how this might be someone's thing, but it did absolutely nothing for me. To my ears, it was just hot-shit garbage.

The problem with doing satire and parody is letting the audience in on the act. You need to give people a wink just to let them know you're performing, not actually being. Either these guys are furiously satirising Fascism and Totalitarianism or they actually are Fascists. But the act is so straight down the line and since many of their lyrics are in German it's not that easy to tell. And the lyrics that are in English don't help make things clear. And how much of their fan base can tell the difference is also up for debate. I felt a bit like I needed a shower after I heard it.

So… i get that Laibach's approach is to take elements of fascist music and turn it up to the point of satire and ridiculousness. I get it… in theory. In practice i think they do nothing for the listener to actually understand that what they are listening to is a parody. Especially the first two tracks made me incredibly uncomfortable to the point that i was considering not finishing the album. And yes, the point of art is to make the recipient uncomfortable. But this album made me uncomfortable because it felt like listening to actual fascist march-music - which made me nauseous considering the state of the world. At no point did the music reveal to me that i am listening to a parody and critique of it. That only came with reading about the album and band. So if the music itself does not manage to transport the idea of pardoy and critique, isn’t it simply reproducing what it’s trying to critique? I’m sure there are whole theses written about this out there, maybe i will go and read them when i feel like it.
I knew one song these guys did from a flash video on rathergood.com, and they did the Iron Sky soundtrack. I just assume this is the ambient sound of Slovenia, and you hear this as soon as you get off the plane.

Yeah im gona spare my ears on this one I think. Sucks abouth as much as its album cover. This album is what I thought Rammstein was before listening to them. And I dont even like Rammstein that much.
This is not a good album. Conceptual dark german cover synth rock. It was in late 80s so nothing really ground breaking just a few decent remake covers but really this shouldnt be here in top 1000 anything

Rough listen. A few of the more orchestral tracks (like The Great Seal) were fun in a kitschy way which made it slightly bearable but not enough to raise it above 1 star.

I thought this album was included for some special reason but no it's just ass. I don't care if it's some Slovenian avant-garde metal album. It's a lot of noise with Slavic yelling. Unfathomable that this made the list but no Rammstein album did.

I have not heard this before. I’ve heard several of these tracks while exploring Laibach some time ago. I like a lot of industrial and goth and symphonic and generally weird music, but I do not like Laibach. I can appreciate how ridiculous they are and that they choose to make unique oddball music that is bad rather than boring bland normal music that is bad. I would appreciate if this album was less than an hour long, because I am determined to listen to each of these albums all the way though. If anything, sitting through this builds character.

Not the worst thing of all time but also not great. "Bad" in a proud kind of way that I respect a little bit, and it only got annoying towards the second half. It's what I imagine Revolution 9 sounds like to people who haven't heard it before. Was waiting for it to be over towards the end but again, there are way worse albums out there than this 2.4/10

I haven't really mentioned this before, but I usually listen to these albums in the morning with my son. It's a great setup because I usually have enough time between making us breakfast, eating and (sometimes) driving to get through a 30-60 minute LP before it's sitter time. Arthur enjoys pretty much anything I put on, which makes sense because he's much too young to comprehend the concept of "bad" music. He just loves music at large and often does these little baby dances with a big smile on his face – it's very cute. That said, this album was so bad that even he couldn't wait for it to be over. My 13-month-old literally crawled over to the stereo and put on Spanish children's music to drown out the unsavory sounds of Laibach coming out of my Bluetooth speaker. No, I'm not joking. Thing is, there's almost a "so bad it's good" quality to Opus Dei. Between the goofy German vocals, random guitar solo and out-of-key organ sounds, the opening track had me gearing up for some delicious garbage. Unfortunately, the rest of the album isn't bad and fun, it's bad and boring. I was so relieved when I realized that I didn't have to listen to the last four songs on Opus Dei, since they are bonus tracks taken from a soundtrack album Laibach put out later that same year. Ironically, I think I enjoyed the couple I accidentally listened to more than the core Book Album. How this album somehow didn't end up in the global bottom 20 is beyond me (though it's pretty close, to be fair). As far as industrial albums go, I'd say Opus Dei is handily worse than the Throbbing Gristle album that is currently sitting at the very bottom. If nothing else, the experience of listening through Opus Dei sparked enough curiosity in me to check out the lead single from Laibach's upcoming MUSICK album ("Allgorhythm"). Still not my thing, but I can at least somewhat understand the appeal. I wish I could say the same for this LP. Highlights: N/A

I feel as if I am not in on a joke when listening to this admittedly interesting album. The avant-garde can be awe inspiring at times, and at other times it sounds something like this. Laibach curate these quasi-industrial vignettes backed by chants and the ramblings of a madman. It wouldn’t be bad if the vocals weren’t so unbearable at times.
Yikes! I would have been quite happy getting to my deathbed having never listened to this. Truly, truly awful.

It was poopoo. It was clearly referencing political ideas and assumingly criticizing things but it was German so had no way to understand them. Besides that, the music aspect was atrocious and all over the place. I had to quit halfway through since it became so much of a background noise rather than a listening experience. 1/5

These edgelords have constructed a series of noises that starts weak and goes downhill from there. They managed to work themselves down from a 3 to a 2 to a 1. Ugh, this is the first album I didn't make it through, gave up with three tracks remaining. Can generally find some redeeming qualities from an artistic perspective but this didn't have many. The synth was cool in track two but the cool moments were far and few between. 1/5 stars

This is really something different. Don't really know what it is supposed to be. A bunch of bored teenagers trying to get attention? A bunch of grown up boys wanting to be cool but totally missed it? No private session used for Spotify. Also no idea what I am getting into for the next hour. While listening to this I try to keep in mind that the list doesn't contain the best albums but also contains interesting albums..the kind your hipper than thou college acquaintance mocks you for not loving. I did not like this album horrible voice over orchestra music with some EDM to really screw with me. I can't imagine listening to this, maybe background music at a Halloween party when you get sick of Monster Mash and Thriller.
The cover and description made me feel this would be enjoyable; it wasn't. Just lots of shouting over awful music with too many brass instruments. One star.

What in the hell did I listen to? I’d never heard of Laibach and I can understand why. It sounded like music for a fictional fascist regime in a movie, or current hate groups in the world today. Laibach is described as avant-garde in Wikipedia, and I agree. Wiki also says they are associated with industrial, martial and neoclassical music. That sums it up. I’ve never been a fan of industrial-type rock and metal. While there are a couple of Ministry songs that tickle me, they aren’t really my type. I’m not even a huge fan of Nine Inch Nails, who dabble in industrial rock. Laibach seems to be a satirical band playing with some really crazy imagery and ideas. The problem is, when you’re creating satire, making fun of something really evil, some people don’t get satire and are legit into the really evil thing you’re just trying to make fun of. Beyond that stuff, which can be scary, Laibach apparently are huge Queen fans. The reason I know this is because on Opus Dei Laibach includes a cover of One Vision and a few samples from Queen’s A Kind of Magic album. It’s weird to hear One Vision sung as a kind of German military song. The whole album kind of gives me the piss shivers. That’s not to say there aren’t some very musical parts, but when the vocalist keeps shouting, “Jawohl!” throughout the song, it can become comical. By the way, Jawohl is pronounced yah-VOL, with the emphasis on VOL! So, if you’re favorite band is Rammstein, Laibach’s Opus Dei is the album for you. Otherwise, you can skip it….I wish I did.

Enjoyed the anthem feel of the opener and the super cheap synth to support it! Quite a build up to start with. Dramatic to say the least… …and how could I expect the cover of ‘One Love’ WTF?! I mean it’s a kinda fierce start to an album. Albeit with a comical and budget sound. And I totally get what other reviews say about the Cookie Monster sound 😂 And FIAT. What the hell. I can respect genres I don’t usually listen to but this is harder and harder to take seriously and give merit. Yeh, get this is getting close to unlistenable now. Maybe more manageable if it was parody. Gonna leave this at the half way point, which is rare, but I get the picture (1.5)

If ever there was a time for Laibach to take the masks off… Those are masks, right? Really weird album, but too tired to think on it much more. The "are they or aren't they?" debate about this band is enough to turn me off of them - there's just too much other music out there for me to bother. Truthfully, the album wasn't as brutal or unlistenable as I expected, but it gets pretty samey pretty quickly, and I don't intend to revisit it. I guess I appreciate that the list-makers included something of this ilk. Why'd it have to be maybe-fascists, though?

41/1001 Laibach - Opus Dei Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ It's quite clear right from the off that Laibach were a heavy influence on Rammstein from the vocals to (on the first half) the industrial style sound. It is a bit more synthy and less heavy, but it's there. I can kind of manage that, but then it turns into marching music to describe it best followed by nationalistic sounding stuff, sampling speeches/singing or speaking them. This where it completely lost me. Now whilst this was on, I was reading about how they would use the nationalistic sounding music to criticise the Communist government in Yugoslavia at the time. However, it does nothing whatsoever for me to enjoy or appreciate this.

bro. I hated this- it sounded like a Kyle Gordon parody of German music. It sounded like if you gave an Eastern Bloc child garage band and access to one nine inch nails song. In a year where I’ve listened to 2 Eminem albums, a bee gees album about an ancient ship and a concept rap album about an alien gynaecologist this is so firmly at the bottom of the list.

Having spent all day at a local pub who had hosted an all day festival of young local bands this came as a shock when I got home to listen to this album. Best I can say in its favour is that the 1001 Gods are once again playing a tick box game by including a Slovenian band. A Country (ahem) well known for its outstanding musical output. My advice is listen to Vinyl Friday a young band I was privileged to witness today instead of this muck. 1/5 5/7/25

I'e heard a different version of 'Live is Life', but nothing like this one, its worth a listen just to... to... maybe not. Yeah, it's different. every once in a while an album seems like it's included on this list for run of the mill music writer "look at the weird shit i know about" reasons. you don't need to hear this before you die, you need to hear this before about 1993 if and only if you live in former yugoslavian republics, and you'll hear someone's version of live is life at every european sporting event anyway.

On a family road trip in 1983 as a young creative child I decided to pass the time by loudly burping the lyrics to Eddy Grant's big hit "Electric Avenue" over the course of an entire day, much to the endless amusement of my family. They thought I was special. I just didn't know it had been recorded. 2/10 1 star

I somehow missed the album and had to go back and listen, I wish I hadn’t. It’s too industrial, it’s too German/Austrian, his voice is really distracting, there are three songs and some instrumentals and then they repeat said songs for different versions? 2/10

One of the funniest albums I've heard for a long time. I mean, it gets old after about a song and a half, but the cover version of Queen's One Vision is laugh out loud funny. Reminded me of stand up comedian Bill Bailey doing the Hokey Cokey as Kraftwerk. Check it out on Youtube.

More an art installation than an album. The would be movie soundtrack to the alt history dystopian industrial world if the 3rd reich or stalins USSR had been all conquering. What the fuck.
This was like Cookie Monster doing black metal over marching beats, it wore out it's welcome pretty quick. It's less an album and more like 3 songs repeated four times but with different battle horns added in. The only good thing is that it's completely different than anything else I've heard. 1.0 for the dystopian medieval trumpets.
It's not the worst album on the list but I didn't need any aspect of this. It's not entirely out my wheelhouse but there are so many barriers for entry that overall I'd rather just skip this altogether. I'm not huge into industrial metal and don't speak German/Slovenian so this is a pretty big miss for me. I tried to give it a shot but after a while I just wanted it to end. 0.59 stars

Pre-listening thoughts: is the reason Kraftwerk was such an accomplishment for Germany that everyone else there was just banging pots and pans together and yelling and calling it music???? Why is every German album here like frightening recruitment music???? Scared for the potential of Kollaps pt 2 Post/during listening thoughts: this is what I think of when I hear “German music”. Now, I will say this is loads better than Kollaps. I don’t think it can get much worse than that. There are actual instruments and singing here. However this totally still falls into the “banging pots and pans together in a militant manner” category. I don’t want to go to war papa 1.5/10 (.5 is for how much it made me laugh. LIFE IS LIFE!!!) DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: as funny as this album is I can’t say I enjoyed any of it as like music I would revisit to actually listen to. It’s clear the creator of this list has a bias for industrial rock. While I know that it has its place, I don’t really enjoy it. This one was no different.

Not even the “One Vision” Queen cover can save this noisy record. The vocalist is obnoxious and the instrumentals are just a lot of noise.
What a horrible album... I'm not easily offended, but hearing stuff like this... phew... I skipped most of it! Those 'Life is life' covers are appalling. It has a bit of The Art Of Noise, but very different on it's own. Perhaps if you like industrial music with pompous drums and horns; this may be something... Otherwise... just skip it...

Close to unlistenable fascist music. It was vaguely interesting for a few minutes but just kept going and going and going. According to their Spotify bio it all might just be some big performance art act, but I don’t think that really matters when your album sounds like the playlist of a Proud Boys meeting.
Honestly kind of scary. Could not finish it. Dystopian and maybe too on the nose for this current political moment.

the songs at the end genuinely made me question my sanity. I can't do that much repetitiveness for 7 minutes and it wasn't even good. I dont really care for what this band stands for either n the current political climate. You know an album is bad whenever you REMEMBER it for being awful.

This album felt like being trapped in a brutalist nightmare, with Arnold Schwarzenegger as my only companion. The album is mechanical, and oppressive. Each song dragged me through a dystopian landscape where the walls felt like they were closing in, and the militaristic thumping beats and monotonous vocals ground me down and stole from me any sense of enjoyment. It was like being stuck in a loop of grey concrete and steel. Not even Arnie could save me.

This album cover is terrifying and I'm not excited for it. Oh nice the sounds of Nazi Germany. Just what I want on a Wednesday morning. I got way further into this than I should've. At best it reminded me of Rammstein but a way worse Rammstein. In no way will I be back. High 1.
