I like the industrial genre and had not heard of Laibach and was looking forward to this. A bit disappointed overall, I get the style and atmosphere they create but the quality of the songs just doesn't excite.

I don't know what's happening but I love it.
I think I'm mostly trying to figure out how tongue-in-cheek this is. I've listened to industrial a bunch before, but never so... heavily militaristic? Song one I enjoyed, but then the record even had an alternate version entirely in English... I think I should have been wary about the metal on this record when one of the first Maiden records was on here, as opposed to... not the first one. Also, holy shit, are the keyboards on this thing dated. Must've been the first synthesizer horns ever invented. The more I think of this one, the more I'd rather never listen to it again, and would kind of side-eye anyone who would want to.
So bad it was a painful experience.

Pre-Rammstein
Yikes. This is a band that has clearly spent all of their time thinking about power structures. The sounds blur the lines between music and an anti-political movement. My hope is that they are making a mockery of power structures of all kinds and sort of forcing listeners to question their own relationship with nationalism and power structures of all kinds. Obviously, that's not clear and may be be too hopeful. Also, it would seem, part of their point. The industrial sound pairs perfectly and is relentless and cold. The song 'Great Seal' is especially problematic as it's really inviting and attractive. You're listening along and like oh this is somewhat pleasant. Then you're like oh shit, I'm humming along. And then, oh wait, am I liking this? And I hope, I really hope that's their main desire. Make us question ourselves. How do we relate to power structures? How do we associate or further the cold and calculated sources of power to be inhuman? If that is the case, I would call the music important. In fact, self-reflection is certainly needed now, at this moment in history around the world.
Nazi constipation music induces laughter and ridicule. Somehow this was unique and entertaining enough to keep me listening all the way through tho.
Well, I can’t say “Opus Dei” wasn’t interesting. Or learning about Laibach and the NSK State. But I can say it was confusing. Both the music and the story behind it. Totalitarianism, facism, and communism did weird things to Eastern Europe. The harshness of the political and economic climate seems to have seeped into everything, which is the only way I can explain the direction rock and industrial music evolved in Germany and points eastward in the 70s and 80s. As much as I may have learned in the process, “Opus Dei” is still a one star album. And so a replacement must be nominated. For every one-star album, I pick a personal favorite 5-star album that didn’t get recognition from the list. And the last couple months, I have repeatedly lamented each time an overrated British band came up and found one album continuously coming to mind: Bloc Party - “Silent Alarm” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The energy on this 2005 debut album is unmatched. It begins with the brilliant cascading entry on “Like Eating Glass” of the whirling guitars followed by a driving bass beat and then finally the drums kick in. And it never lets up.
Liked this better than expected. Very growly. Felt like I was listening to a large muppet.
These deep dark grumbly vocals can go crawl back into the deep dark hole from which they emerged.

Tato skupina má auru epičnosti, ale zároveň je očividné, že se neberou tolik vážně a vše je to spíše parodie na militarismus a fašistický totalismus. Byla mi okamžitě očividná podobnost se skupinou Rammstein, která si od Laibach nepochybně vzala inspiraci. Laibach jsou skuteční industriální pionýři fašo-milito-fetišistické estetiky typické pro Německo, přestože jsou to Slovinci. Je fascinující, že mohli v takové době v Jugoslávii působit (chvílemi samozřejmě omezeně). Toto bylo skutečně kulturní obohacení, definitivně se budu k tomuto skvostu jednou za čas vracet. Nejlepší: Leben heisst leben, Leben:Tod, Opus Dei Nejhorší: nic Verdikt: 8/10
Nope. Nope. Nope. Ironic fascism (?) blended with electronic/industrial repetition....An absolute slog to get through and had a hard time finding anything note worthy that would save it from this rating.

I was not ready for this album lmao. What was this? First things first, the best thing about this recommendation is that it led me to their cover of across the universe and it's better than anything on this album. So, go give that a listen rn. Now, coming back to this album. I wish it was darker and more tribal. The drums could've been deeper and harder. I don't care for the queen cover. Leben Tod feels like a straightforward hard rock experimental song and it's good. I wish the vocals went harder as well. More aggression and energy in the vocals could have elevated the album. There are a few vibes that the album goes for and I wish it picked a lane or two and stayed there. It has this rock opera feel, then it covers queen as well, and then it this dramatic strings and horns and then it tries to mix all that with that German military hardcore chanting and war vibes and it just leaves the album hanging somewhere in the middle. I wish it had gone harder with just the military war rock chanting sound. Okay, so now for what the album is I did warm up to it after a few listens. Opus die is fine but i don't like the strings and the repeated chorus vocals. Same with FIAT. I like the darker experimental songs more. Trans National is great with those drum hits, and staccato strings, and panned synths. And then this great bass line also comes up. It's really good. It's almost an industrial dance song. How the west was won is good too, the main guitar riff with the drum pattern is great. It's a heavy, lumbering, and sharp track. The great seal is meh, sounds very cliche with those overdramatic strings. Herz-felde is great with those marching drums and group chants and repeated strings. Love the vibe of this one and the next track, Jagerspeil. koza skin is just hypnotic with that synth line and whispered vocals and background military vocal snippets. Great atmospheric track. The last track builds on that dark hypnotic atmosphere as well with repeated drum hits, synth or violin line?, some spoken word. It sounds good and then it ruins it all by integrating this dramatic strings during the ending and it kills the entire atmosphere. It's so annoying. It's a decent 3 for me. I like the second half much much better than the first.

I liked the second half a lot more than the first. In fact, I thought it was a different album. Would have been way more epic with a real orchestra but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
Okay, who had Slovenian art rock in today's sweepstakes? Some great (deliberately) comic highlights (somehow Leben heisst Leben is funnier in Geman). The (age retricted) video to the English version is something to behold, though. Apart from those covers there's not much in the way of tunes (or music), and it gets a bit tiresome to listen to. But hey, at least they're having fun. 2.5 🌟 Gib mir ein leicht bier!

Det här var ett fräscht avbrott jämfört med de senaste dagarna. Lyssnade lite på andra låtar med Laibach och många av de var bättre än detta. Just den här skiva får en trea men tror jag kommer återvända till gruppen för att hitta gudlkornen i deras katalog.
Inte riktigt min smak men det finns ju nåt där. Cover på queen är bättre än originalet
De två första låtarna. Som är covers är också bäst. Tredje låten, Leben - tod, är svagare. Fjärde låten är inte heller lika stark FIAT. Femte låten är samma cover igen, på engelska. Sjätte låten, musiken låter som ett tåg. Hetsigt. Lite lattjo. Påminner om de fyra sista soundtrackslåtarna. Inte dåligt. Men inte svinbra heller. How the west was won är nog deras egna bästa (alltså efter covers). Fan gillae nog herz-feld ändå. Men inte på ett "det här kommer jag sätta på lyssna på"-sätt. Första lyssningen var jag lite besviken, runt en tvåa. Jag tycker det är billigt med covers. Som är albumets bästa låtar. Men de är ändå rätt bra.

Det här var ju kul. Originellt och åtminstone delvis rätt bra. Dock är det ju deras covers som är bäst (Leben heisst leben och Geburt einer nation, Opus dei var inte lika bra), vilket för mig drar ned intrycket lite. Svår att betygsätta då det är så spretigt, men landar efter en sammanvägning i en stark tvåa.

Well that's a mixed bag for sure. But there's some gems among the 'difficult' stuff & their re-make of 'Life is Life' / Opus Dei is nothing short of brilliant. Several other tracks are growing on me as well.

i was incredibly skeptical about this album but i actually really dig it. definitely not an album i would have ever come across so good on ya 1001!
dark and orchestral. grandiose. elements of industrial music. some lyrics are in german, some are in english, sung in a distinct and harsh style. an obvious influence on current day european bands such as rammstein. wasn’t necessarily my thing, but i can understand the allure.

Laibach achieves a very avant-garde album where the gothic sound is the one that sounds the most. The covers of Life is Life and One Vision are funny. After that the sound is quite bland and repetitive. Also the lyrics are very weirdo. These people really were nazis.
Most out there album yet. Once I got past the initial stages and began to acclimatise to the weirdness, I enjoyed it a decent amount. No need to listen again but good to have some albums like this on here!
Ludicrous, sometimes humorously so, other times testing. Some cool flourishes of experimentation but it couldn't elevate the whole experience. Two and a half. Fave track: Opus Dei
One of the most sincerely confusing albums yet - it began so aggressively weird that I couldn’t begin to imagine how anyone could enjoy the mix of throaty demon music with the almost Princess Bride-knockoff-sounding synthesisers. Then somewhere in the middle (probably during the title track) I think I got it. And I thought it was funny, and I thought it was kind of great. Certainly one of the most unique listens I’ll have on this project, and one I had to meet on its level to appreciate. Don’t know how many times I’ll come back to it, but weirdly I think I’ll suggest this to a lot of people just to experience once. Fave track: Opus Dei
I love the different approaches that are in this album. The orchestral bits are fun. It's not the greatest but I didn't hate it either. I feel it deserves a 3 at the very least so I'll give it that

Enjoyable for the spectacle of it. The dark brooding metal vocals mixed with industrial metal and occasional orchestral flare. Definitely cool in the thing that it is doing.

If Grima Wormtongue was given the job of DJing the Uruk-Hai Christmas Party I think would be perfect. It has the innate anger of a pack of Orcs but adds enough wimsy and jauntyness to appeal to murdering half-men celebrating a nice time of the year. I'm sure the Orcs would give this album five stars. However for all the same reasons this gets a 2 from me.
I really don't understand what I just listened to. It's like... it's like the sound track to a b-level Bond movie rip off produced in pre-unification, East Germany. The whole thing is needlessly and dramatically gothic... but without the artistry. It's incredibly stiff and regimented. Why is this on the list, again? Oh, right. "Cultural importance" or something. Alright, you get a star for that.

OK, this is great: Live is Life was "made" for Laibach, and same goes for One Vision. These two songs might be the best what they ever did (and both LiL versions are excellent) the other five songs are good too but have a little less impact, so overall 8/10.
I was first introduced to this band when they released Kapital, an album that I quite liked and have listened to many times since. The rest of their discovery has always been a bit of a mixed bag for me, but I might have found a new favourite with Opus Dei. The two versions of Life Is Life were familiar of course, as well as a couple of other songs, but this sounded very impressive overall.
Despite a high score for the cult factor and two appreciable covers of a great song, I cannot justify more than two stars for this bombastic pastiche.
I have no idea but I couldn't listen to any song of the album except Guburt Einer Nation. I'd heard this melody and rhythm, anyone help me. It might be something from rock, 70s or 80s.
Definitely heard of laibach before, but never listened. Really cool industrial music similar to rammstein. Read up on them a little bit and their history and concepts are also quite interesting. Some of the songs are bit too repetitive for my taste but overall I enjoyed it. Feel like child laborer in during the industrial revolution listening to this. 😋 Will listen again. 8/10

sounds like a shitty german version of stomp or some shit. I can only assume this is included because its an early version of what would become 'industrial' music or something. It sucks, and every song sounds like there are dudes banging metal trash cans. I bet Rammstein listened to a lot of this. 1.3.
6/10 - German Rock album - Classical notes with symphony Ramstein Inspiration
My reaction to the record depended a lot on my inability to understand the most of the language used throughout. The wide variety of eerie, industrial, and national anthem-like sounds meshed well with the incomprehensible German such that if this was a more bland rock record I would have been bored for an hour. It will be pretty funny to come across these on shuffle in my playlists, but will be among the albums I'm least likely to go back to. Overall glad to be introduced to it though, was enjoyable in an atypical way. 4/10
Weird almost tribal metal but German.
What a bloated, heaping pile of gravel-filled horse excrement. The anti-fascist/fascist b.s. only masks the pointlessness of this soulless gurgle of acid. This may be the absolute worst album I've ever listened to... and I DID listen to it! The whole wretched thing! I earnestly wanted to discover why it was on this list. I mean, for the sake of it, the metalhead in me wanted to relate to the tone, the ambiance, the themes... but there's no way into this self-serving chamber echoing farts. Negative zero -- and that's being kind.

Proto-Rammstein with a Slovenian guy burp-singing into the mic. As a fellow Eastern European, it's great to see some Slavic representation on this list, but surely there are better examples? If the reason why this was included is the massive influence these guys had on Rammstein, then why isn't there any Rammstein album on this list? Kind of boring in a really goofy way. Didn't enjoy it that much.

An interesting concept for a band for sure; industrial metal parodying fascist dictatorships (god I hope it’s a parody and I didn’t just give fascists views/listens/clicks). Unfortunately between the singer’s Arnold Schwarzenegger sounding voice and music that sounds like it would fit into an 80’s movie training montage it’s hard to take it too seriously. Also, as a non German speaker, if you make very militaristic sounding music and sing in German while wearing nazi uniforms I can’t tell if you’re making fun of them/making a statement or are legit just a bunch of nazi and I almost have to err on the side of caution. Sorry not for me

Nah.The only Laibach track that’s ever moved me was their amazing cover of The Beatles’ Across The Universe, which was really the work of the vocal choir (Germania?) This album really does nothing for me.
I spent the 90s playing in a (pretty rubbish) industrial band, so I am very familiar with Laibach. It's one of the ur-texts of industrial. It's pompous and pretentious and bombastic and dramatic. Their cover of Sympathy for the Devil (released at around the same time as this album, but sadly not included on it) is the reason that it seems like every industrial band ever does a cover of that song. My band certainly did. Laibach are hardly the first band to notice the fascist overtones of rock and roll. Bowie and Pink Floyd both riffed on that theme prior to this. But Laibach take it to an extreme, and it doesn't take much to re-frame Queen's stadium anthem 'One Vision' into something much more threatening. I mostly found their covers more compelling than their originals (on this album certainly, their Sympathy single, or their whole album cover of the Beatles' Let It Be LP), although I'm sure I have plagiarized 'Leben: Tod' on more than one occasion. It's a big stomping sound they make, and you can certainly see that bands like Rammstein have taken the baton and run with it. Are Laibach more of an art project and/or political statement than band? If so, I'm not quite sure what that statement is. And are their records better in concept than in practice? I always found it hard to tell whether Laibach are being funny or ironic, because they are so straight faced in their presentation, and they have kept it up for over 30 years at this point. And that makes me uncomfortable, because if they aren't being satirical, well, you, fascism=bad. So, for me, this was an influential album, although it makes me uneasy to listen to. And non-essential.
One applauds the political commitment and insights (now long outdated). But musically this isn't really worth the time, even by the standards of Eastern European absurdism or socially conscious performance art. Vocals are a joke – a scary movie joke, one supposes. "F.I.A.T." is vaguely interesting, but mostly sounds like a soundtrack for a low-budget thriller of political espionage (to which end all this creative energy might have more productively been channelled). "How the West" has a semi-engaging moment where the strings intersect with the thumping metal beat, but then the laughable, cartoon villain vocals kick back in. There is some variation in styles and a general sense of unpredictability, with a tendency toward the darker/heavier and more martial the longer the record goes on, with an overemphasis on repetition (and repetition). One doesn't feel one really gets anywhere, at least anywhere recognizable for one lacking a deep knowledge of Balkan politics circa late '80s or the various languages at play here. Might belong on a list of 1,001 Political Satire or Protest Albums, but certainly does not belong on this list. Potential bonus points for including "hugger-mugger" in the lyrics.

Rating: ** 1 ** Notes: Really really unpopular band (70k monthly listeners on spotify). Did remind me of Rammstein, but their music is not as melodical. I did not like the mixture of german singing with slovenian accent, also I had the feeling that the songs are eithr not original or just the same beat and kind of experimental and very weird and also annoying. I find it funny that in their Wikipedia page it says that one of their albums is in the book 1001 albums... like this is their greatest achievement...So far, the worst listening experience for me (especially Herz-Felde), several times I thought about quitting. But for the people who liked it: they have a concert in Vienna on 21.11. Loved the instrumental/experimental vibes of it. Never heard of the band. I should listen more songs from the industrial-experimental genre. Once I got used to it, I really liked it. Wouldn‘t listen to it every day. Some elements reminded me of the sound track from the movie „house of thousand corpses“. Music/Film by Rob Zombie! Fine. In general I love industrial music, but this album didn’t grab me. The militaristic marching band vibe is a clever gimmick, and I know its intent is to mock fascism, but it is a little off putting at times with everything that’s going on these days. Although this album motivated me to listen to Laibach’s album Let It Be (yes, a cover of most of that Beatles album), and that album is a solid 4 out of 5.
Did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did. About halfway through I texted Ian to confirm that he knew this already or at least was enjoying it as much as I did. We’ll never know. Definitely in the vein of Ministry and Swans and other industrial loud loud noisy screaming bands. My kids said it sounded like Angry Cookie Monster, which I will now refer to music in this genre as.
This was great. I liked the singing and the guitar. I couldn’t understand what was being said, but it made me want to resist and revolt.

this was an interesting album. their whole shtick reminded me of the band Ghost, but like, the 80s german industrial version. i enjoyed the german queen covers. unfortunately, the novelty of the album wore off after a few tracks, leaving the last half of it a real slog to get through. also, the ironic fascism element probably hit different in 1987 than in 2023... :\ with all that said, i get why this is in the bottom 20 or so albums on this site, but I'll stand by my mantra. it's better to be weird and interesting and potentially off-putting than milquetoast. i'd rather listen to my ninth totally off-the-wall album than my ninth neil young album. favorites: leben heisst leben, geburt einer nation, opus dei

At first I thought this would be the kind of weird shit I can get behind, but alas, the longer it went on I realised it was a little too weird, even for me. The blend of industrial noise, tribal chanting and what sounds like nationalist propaganda anthems (EDIT - just read the wiki and it seems that's exactly what it is) is like nothing I've heard before. I'm kind of glad it exists, but I'm not sure I'd want to listen to it again. EDIT #2 - Now I know that tracks 9-12 don't really belong on the album I have to give this a bump up - there's too much chutzpah in tracks 1-8 to give it just 1 star.

Best Song: Opus Dei. Sometimes a song can be so bad it's good, and I think that might be what's going on here. Worst Song: The Great Seal. Sounds like it should run over the end credits to a late 90s computer game. Overall: 95% cheesy pomp, 5% substance. I like that it's weird, but I just don't like this flavour of theatrical weird. It's difficult to tell what, if any of it, is tongue-in-cheek, so it all comes off as a bit goofy.

A fun listen. Obvious big fans of Queen’s ‘A Kind of Magic’.
I begun the album sipping coffee when a strange feeling came from my bowels. I rushed to the restroom, sat down and what felt like a hot soup can came rushing out of me. For a moment I felt relief. Just then a yawn followed by what sounded like an angry German came from the bowl. I was launched off the toilet and knocked to the ground from an uppercut to the anus followed by a mid air roundhouse the face. I was half naked and stunned as he appeared. A brown demon shit stood before me. I had spawned a demon poo. He tied me up gagged me and left me in the bedroom closet. I was left in sheer horror as I knew my darling Betty would be home soon. But instead of harming her all I could hear is soft German being spoken to her. For the next 24 hours all I could see, smell and hear was love makin. The nasty German kind. Once it was over a knife was held to my neck and I was unbound with a simple "shhhhhhh" coming from the angry turd demon. My dear Betty asleep he left the room, the house and what I now know the state. I found him on linked in a year later. Happy and married working as some sort of lobbyist for Pfizer. Fuck you Opus Day. You spawned a demon turd right out of me. Betty still calls his name and the skid marks remain on the sheets.
Pleasantly surprised! Powerful, catchy rhythms, cool sounding vocals, interesting melodies, variety. I liked this! The main messages I caught felt very pro-community and anti-war / establishment.

I enjoyed the overall vibe of this album, it made me want to start a revolution which is always a good sign of a good album. Who doesn't like some medieval trumpets. There weren’t any stand out tracks because all the tracks were just really good. I think the reason I like this album is because of all the queen influences, but I honestly didn't expect to like this album as much as I did.

Man this album makes me wish I could smoke a blunt with Hitler and show him this album I bet he would love it lol Interesting combination of industrial metal and Wagnerian-style synth music with very gravelly vocals I actually liked the feeling of the music at times, especially on FIAT, Opus Dei, and the Great Seal, those tracks sounded triumphant and heroic. I kinda liked some of the industrial parts I like albums that are interesting experiences so I enjoyed the listen 3

This is completely mad. I can't see myself ever listening to it again, but I'm kind of glad that I've heard it once. It's mostly in German, combination of a bit of metal, some creepy spoken word, and some orchestral pieces. The guttural German cover of Queen's One Vision is a highlight. 2/5, knocking on the door for a 3 but it's just too weird.

Laibach is one of the biggest will-they-won't-they bands ever. Are they nazis? Are they communists? Are they even musicians? Tough to rate an album that is 2/8 parts 'Life Is Life', 1/8 part Queen cover, 1/8 part Churchill "tribute", and 4/8 parts industrial with raspy baryton vocals suitable for a Nazi propaganda video.
The lyrics of Queen's "One Vision" certainly carry another kind of symbolism when performed in German by Slovenian industrial export #1.
I saw the word “jazz” in a description and my heart sank. I glimpsed the album art and was confused. I listened to the music and I was confounded. What is this? Why is this? Who is this?? I did question myself part way through when the Churchill speech was playing over some Germanic sounding language, especially since I had watched episode one of The White House Plumbers the night before. All in all am experience I am glad I have had.
I like some of the Laibach albums. This is not one of these. The songs on this record are too stupid and narrow minded for me, lacking the (not too obvious) intelligence and musical complexity the other albums have. For example "Krst Pod Triglavom - Baptism (1987)" is fantastic (even knowing it contains Nazi speeches) and "Slovenska Akropola (1987)" is great too. This album is a collection of cheap thrills and only the songs at the end (from "Krst...Baptism") show some quality.
Kind of wanted to like this but can't take it seriously. Not keen on the drum sound or the vocals.

This is an album and band that's MEANT to make you feel uncomfortable. Not sure why this is marked as metal/hardrock though. Have you ever wondered how much Queen's "One Vision" seemingly shares a lot of similarities to certain 1930 speeches when translated into German? (Ein Mensch, Ein Ziel, Eine Erde und ein Volk!) Have you ever thought what would happen if you REALLY listen to the lyrics of Opus' 'Life is Life' and put it into a Nietzschean / Wagner type style, complete with a campy totalitarian aesthetic? Laibach is disturbing, thought-provoking and unsettling. And it's supposed to be. And a band that's worth listening more of. Albums like Spectre, Kapital or Wir Sind Das Volk are fully worth it.

For an album labelled as metal on here, I didn't expect something like this. It's weird. I didn't even really know what to think about it. Perhaps this needs a relisten, but I don't want to relisten to it, so it will stay at a 2. My favourite song was Geburt Einer Nation, I guess?
3.4 - If Rammstein decided to compete in Eurovision, this might be the result. It’s an interesting blend of sounds, partly fascist propaganda, some Wagnerian classical flourishes, as well as hair metal with a splash of electronics. It’s a bit too thick on the theatrics for me but I might revisit the 4-part “Baptism.”
Some remarkable musicality in this one. Classical meets proto-Rammstein. And from such an underrepresented region in music. Touching in some ways too. The themes are elevated by the sounds.
Starts decent but once the "shock"/"exotic" factor wore off halfway through the album, you're just not left with good music

I remain curious about Laibach's concept; There is absolutely nothing to bring me back to the music. This feels like one of those historical popularity oddities: The industrial sounds are standard, covers and gimmick dominate the tracklist, and the political project is niche in time and space. Martial industrial remains an entry in my list of music to get to, but there's a reason it's languished there for some time. I hear the four extra-vinyl tracks are different or better; They're unheard and don't factor into this ranking.
I appreciate the list expanded outside of the US and UK, but not like this. Outside of the off-putting belchy vocals, the first half or so of the album was acceptable as something a little different. The track "Trans-National" was not bad. It sounded sort of like a spy movie soundtrack. But the remainder of the album was just atrocious, a boring repetitive slog. I really hated it. Disliked the album cover art as well. Edit: Just looked at the wikipedia page and it seems the last four tracks (probably the four worst on the album) were bonus CD tracks. With those excluded, that might put my rating closer to 1.5, but I'm leaving it 1/5.

Rating this a five, not because I think every song on it is great but because I really the vibe the whole album puts out.

The list giveth 3 great albums in a row, the list also giveth a bottom rated follow up that completely doesn’t match the vibes of the last 3. While it sounds like I’m going to hate on the album, I’m mostly just fascinated by it. I can’t imagine that any regular person born after 1970 and/or outside of Eastern Europe would find this album even moderately comprehensible. Even if I spoke German I wouldnt have a clue what they’re going for, I feel; and short of a class in late stage Soviet era culture I’ll never understand this. It’s a mix of patriotic trumpets, heavy metal with vocals recorded by a singer with a mouthful of gravel, and samples of Winston Churchill quotes and the only thing I took away from it was that ramnstein had to have been influenced by this in some way. I was fine with it at first and excited to give it a 3, but then jagerspiel hit and that all too familiar feeling of physical discomfort came over me as I listened to something just awful. In general, I appreciate albums like this that are radically different from anything I’ve ever heard and are completely opaque to me because it makes me try to understand what the artist was trying to say with this. Unfortunately this came at a bad time at the tail end of an epic three album run so it doesn’t get quite as much slack.
This is ridiculous. I do appreciate hearing something so dramatically different than the usual on this list, but it's not really for me. I always fine music from this part of the world in the 70s and 80s interesting just because of the insular nature of that area at that time. Fun enough.

the exact type of band (and album) which makes me really happy we started this project — dadaist yugoslavian industrial music including a queen cover (and they also did a full album that’s just industrial covers of the beatles’ let it be???? more please). just incredible all around. viewed as an art piece, it’s one of the best i’ve ever seen. it’s also pretty listenable!

This band/Art collective was an inspiration for Rammstein. I don't like either of them that much but I can at least appreciate the musical character and especially the rearrangements of pop songs of the time. I'm sure this album did lots to get music evolving. It's just not my cup of tea.

Hreggi vinur var mjög hrifinn af Laibach og ég kunni alveg að meta í hófi. Hef hins vegar ekki hlustað í segjum 27 ár. Þessi plata eldist ágætlega, svoldið þurrt og lágt mixað bandið, og svona rymsöngur gerir lítið fyrir mig. En þetta er sjarmerandi miðað við fasíska umgjörðina.
Some of the stuff on this list I can just imagine that one friend sitting you down in front of the Hi Fi for a play and watching for your reaction as you fumble for your more positive impressions that aren't fooling anyone... not an industrial fan (if that is indeed what yous call this), and the kind of satiro-fascist shtick gets old for me quick. The repetitive stuff towards the end bordered on intolerable. Not quite 1-2 star territory but I wouldn't bother with it again.

As admirable and fun as it is to mix military classical, popular middle ground rock and industrial noise along with a dose of local politiking, I'm sadly outside the joke and the culture and don't really "get" this. I'd rather actually listen to Queen or Opus, but kudos for putting it together AND getting picked for the 1001 albums book.

I’m in the minority for this but I loved this. It’s weird enough but not in your face weird.
Kinda weird. The closest parallel for me is Rammstein. It has its moments but wasn't really that enthralling, especially the last 3 songs. A 2 for overall enjoyment, a 3 for being ahead of the curve.
I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. Freddy's reach knows no bounds apparently.

This is a very oppressive album. I quite like how weird it is, with the rhythmic drums, layered synths, guitars and trumpets. It definitely has a unique atmosphere to it, it's just a real slog. Very repetitive and very hard going.
I mean... okay. It just seems to be very march-y. Is there any joy to this? Any... fun? Covering "One VIsion" from Queen. The end of the original, Mercury sings "just gimme gimme gimme FRIED CHICKEN," which goes by so quickly you miss it if you're not listening closely. The point is the band doesn't take themselves too seriously. This band seems to be doing the exact OPPOSITE of that. I mean, even on the SNL bit "Sprockets" there was a point where they danced. Lighten up, guys.
Geez that's intense. I didn't hate it, which maybe isn't a surprise because I don't mind Rammstein, but I'm not going back for more. Chalk this one up to another interesting entry from the world of music. Maybe I have a soft spot because I enjoyed my time in Ljubljana (the name of the band in Slovenian).

Didn't know what to get going into this and I enjoyed it. The Queen cover was really unexpected and for that I liked it. Plus I'm tired of getting shitty 80s new wave or whatever. This is what I was hoping was on the list. How often am I going to listen to Slovenian industrial metal? It was different and I liked it for that reason.

Laibach's Opus Dei is like nothing I've ever heard before. And that's not necessarily a good thing. I mean, I'm all for exploring new musical territory, but this album is like a trip to a bizarre, dystopian world where the only sound is industrial techno mixed with Gregorian chants. And don't even get me started on the two covers of "Live is Life" in German. I mean, I get it, they're trying to make a statement or something, but come on. One was more than enough. It's like they're trying to brainwash us into liking it or something. All in all, Opus Dei is definitely not my cup of tea. But hey, if you're into weird, experimental music that makes you question your sanity, give it a listen. Just don't say I didn't warn you.
I’m not one that bothers with hating an artist because they’re controversial but I would get it for this album… This is a weird one and the kinda thing I think the list is really meant for! The whole album portrays a dark brooding fascist dystopia something that you’ve really got to be confident musicians in doing something like this especially as while (I think/hope) this is parody, it really is on the edge. Musically I didn’t mind it I wasn’t a massive fan of the electronic drumming but musically the rest was decent. There is filler on the second half but the first half is good. 3/5

If the rest of this album is as good as this first track, I'm all in. Am I supposed to take this as funny? Or at least tongue-in-cheek? I mean, they're covering Queen, so it can't be all that serious, right? This was more fun than I thought it would be. But it's also less good than I wanted it to be. Things got pretty long in the tooth toward the end. A case of out-staying one's welcome.
Everyone's favourite avant-garde Slovenian art rock band, right? Honestly, this fucking rules. Taking the dumbest dogshit song by Austrian no-hopers Opus and covering it - twice? Turning Queen's 'One Vision' into a mock blood-and-soil military march? Finishing up with a quote from Churchill? Superb. Wish more bands had the guts to do something quite as cerebral and satirical as this. Maybe Devo, maybe the Residents. Points the way towards what popular music could be.

I hadn’t heard of Laibach before today. The album art made me think it might possibly be death metal, but Apple Music describes it as electronic. Not quite what I was expecting, but I’m very intrigued. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Geburt Einer Nation, The Great Seal This album was fantastic! I’ve some heavy guitars were thrown into the mix, you’d definitely be forgiven for thinking this was Rammstein, except this album was released seven years before Rammstein had even formed. There are a couple of covers here which are excellently done (Geburt Einer Nation in a very unique take on Queen’s One Vision), and plenty of brilliant originals too. I will say that I don’t speak any German so I don’t understand any of the lyrics, but from a completely musical point of view I found this to be very good. It does fizzle off into a few duller tracks towards the end, but overall I’m definitely glad to have heard this today.
OK so this one was rather weird for me and I'm not entirely sure what to think about it. There were some parts that I liked musically - in particular the more gothic parts. But I found the lyrics, titles and imagery, as well as the martial sounds, disconcerting and unpleasant. I also really don't know where to place these guys on the political spectrum. According to Wikipedia, that seems to be their goal, but it's definitely unpleasant. I'll give this 3.5 if I don't include the 4 Baptism bonus tracks. But definitely rounding down for those. They're completely unlistenable (1.5 star).
Points for the sheer absurdity of mixing 80s Queen and pop, with industrial metal, and a theme of fascism. It fails to hold attention beyond the first half, and essentially devolves, but still worth a listen. The concept is clear- the anthems of a victorious, industrial, fascist autocracy. 02/03/23

This is a refreshing genre reminding me of scifi video games. Reminiscent of bands like Rammstein, this martial industrial album is characterized by Wagnerian (metal-esque) vocals, gothic melodic structure, and industrial and military sound effects providing triumphant and emotionally charged tracks. I recognize "Opus Dei" from an industrial club I went to. There are some decent tracks, but much of it is dull and forgettable.

I was NOT expecting to like this. 😂 But I was in a particularly pissed off mood, so some of the especially clangy songs went off. It started to drag a bit long towards the end, but it was mostly enjoyable and entertaining (and I understand super basic German, so it was fun trying to figure out what everything was about).
I didn't mind this at first but later on there were some songs that I hated - HATED!! I could not bear to listen to them - it started with "Herz-Felde" and continued through the end. I've never felt so tortured listening to a song. Supposedly they claim not to be fascists, but try not to imagine a Nazi rally listing to this bullshit.

Pretty interesting band. Basically a parody of fascist/authoritarian thoughts. Per Wiki: Laibach has frequently been accused of both far left and far right political stances due to their use of uniforms and totalitarian-style aesthetics. They were also accused of being members of the neo-nationalism movement, which reincarnates modern ideas of nationalism. When confronted with such accusations, Laibach is quoted as replying with the ambiguous response "We are fascists as much as Hitler was a painter". In addition, Laibach also provided most of the soundtrack for Iron Sky, a film that mocked Nazism. That said, I do not enjoy listening to it at all. I really respect the concept though.

Incredibly cinematic. I think this album is vital after listening to it, and I would argue that this obviously inspired several other projects (Rammstein feels like an obvious one, but stuff like Sigur Rós and other atmospheric projects definitely seem to have similar lineage musically). Either way, this is an album that I think everyone should digest at some point.
Standouts: Lieben Heisst Leiben (Life is Life by Opus), Geburt Einer Nation (One Vision by Queen), Opus Dei (LIfe is Life by Opus (again)). Others: Trans-National, How the West Was Won, 3
Weird shit
What a surprise this one was. Expected dated dark metal, received symphonic and innovative collection of songs by that mixed genres. Not all winners but really quite a revelation.
Unfortunately the CD bonus tracks on here performed in the band's native Slovenian were the best part for me. The opening was strong, but most of the middle tracks didn't impress. The English version of "Leben heißt Leben" was especially unnecessary. The bonus tracks come from another Laibach album titled "Krst pod Triglavom: Baptism", so moving forward I'm going to listen to that album instead, but since it's not on the list, I'll credit those tracks to this album anyway. Ik kende de legendarische Opus Dei videoclip en was dus zeker benieuwd naar dit album. Ik moet zeggen dat een heel album wel een beetje veel is. Het is zowel fantastisch als verschrikkelijk. 2/5. A very interesting album. It’s not bad but it’s not unique enough to listen to again. The only that feels different is the German language. Don’t have too many feelings for this one.
About as intriguing musically today as late '80s Balkan politics are relevant today. Different, yes, and perhaps worth an occasional consideration in a historical sense. But suitable for this esteemed list? No. This is a musical oddity, a satirical (perhaps bitting – it's hard for one to say when one doesn't speak the languages here) commentary on a political moment in time. It's also just straight-up odd, especialy the vocals and the rather haphazard contrasting of styles, metal chugging with minimalist keyboards and the stagey and bizarre-o vocals.
I gave this album 5 attempts, no exaggeration, and could not finish it. At first I thought, “oh this is different and fun” and within a couple minutes, it just felt like a weird, fevery nightmare soundscape that induced anxiety spikes. NAH THANKS
One of the weirdest things I have ever listened to. It was like National Music mixed with 80s Rock, and the singer was from a Frogcore Metal Band.
One listen through and some googling left me wanting to learn more about this band and the cultural context. Loved the intimidating chanting and bullfrog vocals 3/5
Well this was an experience. Definitely not easy listening, but does have some interesting qualities. Feels like I’m listening to a parade for some Totalatarian Regime. The Wikipedia confirmed that this is intentional, as their music is parodying that style of music. Interesting album/band but I don’t think I would listen again.
Rammstein meets Duran Duran
Think the worst thing that could have happened to this album was being released in the late 1980s; dated production aside, I don’t know why I liked this as much as I did (up to “The Great Seal”; I haven’t heard the last 4, CD-only tracks yet). The incorporation of bugles, chanting & very loud drums makes this feel like less of an album & more of a soundtrack to a dark fantasy movie. I caught the cover of “One Vision” by Queen but didn’t recognize the Opus track; knowing how the original sounds makes this album funnier as a whole. One of my favourite bands is Muse, which might explain my tolerance for the bombast & theatrics brought to this album, and in *both* versions of “Live is Life”. I think I liked this. I really can’t tell. I started thinking how terrible it was but then found I listened to it a few times over. It is too long, and there is some bits that arent my cuppa tea, but the bits that were good I really enjoyed. A very confusing listen.
That was unlike anything I've heard before, it just kept getting weirder as it went along. Don't think Slovenian avant garde industrial music is my thing but it was well worth listening to.
4 stars for audacity. What works works, what doesn't work is terrifying. The album is unsettling, and I believe that was the goal. A great introduction to the neo-folk martial industrial genre! Raus!
I like a bit of Rammstein and I can hear they've definitely taken inspiration from Laibach. I think the album is too long and the last third of is pretty awful. I swear it sounds like they're saying "I have not pooed" in the song "Herz-Felde". Highlight was "Leben - Tod"
This was complete madness. At first I thought it was quite interesting but half way through I found myself checking how long I had left to listen to. The last third or so was absolutely mental and verging on unlistenable imo I can imagine this appearing on an episode of Beavis and Butthead with them critiquing it. The life is life cover was interesting! I'm only giving this a 2 because it made me say "what the fuck" out loud while listening and also the fact that it was quite interesting JAH JAH.....NEIN NEIN!
The first song is an interesting combination of vibes. Then there were some songs I really enjoyed as well as some that were a bit too experimental for my tastes. A very mixed bag overall.
At first I was excited by this, but then quickly found it unlistenable. I really like noisey music, but this didn't really click.

This is a joke, right? It sounds like a homemade backtrack, in the style of the Princess Bride soundtrack, for a recruitment VHS for the secret society of neckbearded katana enthusiasts. It evokes mental images of quick cuts between scenes of swords slicing halfway through 2-liter bottles of mountain dew, and dudes with fedoras bowing. Honestly, the music itself doesn't have much to offer and I can't really think of what impact this band had on the history of music that would merit suggesting this is something that anyone has to hear in their lifetime. If anything, I'd suggest it's quite the opposite.
