Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Really really not for me

Starts out stronger than it ends.

Late 80s metal. Slovenian band. Strange, ominous ‘Life is live’ cover, German chanting. Quuen inspirations. 80s pop rock with growled German vocals, very weird but kind of funny. Industrial, influenced Rammstein. Second half nightmareish industrial.

Not for me. Thanks though.

First song was pretty good, then the album took a nosedive into the weird.

When you need just the right cocktail music for your end-of-democracy themed 80s party.

Walking to work during a torrential downpour listening to LIFE IS LIFE was fun

Unhinged soundtrack for cooking breakfast. First half sounds like a superhero movie, second half is just repetitive German rally-core and gets boring

Interesting 🤔, not sure if I could say I enjoyed this album. It appears the lead singer had a sore throat on some of the tracks, which is a shame. I guess this wasn't quite my thing, but it made me smile.

hmmmmmm

Well that was… something. Yah yah yah! 2 stars, though! Granted them an extra star mostly because I kept imaging how clever they must have felt and I love that for them.

I would say I get Rammstein vibes from this, but then it would just be that Boss Baby meme IRL (something like, Guy who has only seen Boss Baby watching another movie: "I'm getting a lot of Boss Baby vibes from this"). This did have more of a military march quality, I guess. Honestly, I don't know what to make of it. It was imposing and harsh a lot of the time. I did like the Life Is Life song, but the German foreign language version was better to me. The rest of the songs didn't really engage me that much. They also were much quieter for me that both Life Is Life versions, which may have been a problem with my own speakers but caused some uneven listening. I appreciate getting something different, so that gains it some points. I can't really say I thought it was all that good, though. Overall: 1.9/5

Did I expect to hear a Slovenian metal band covering Queen when I signed up to this list? No. Did I enjoy it? Also no. Still leagues better than Metallica though.

Inte för mig

Not my cup of tea

After the first two songs, I was ready to write this off as Music for Skinheads. Then I noticed the subtle skewing of the message, the tongue slowly inching towards the cheek. This does have touches of Kraftwerk, The Art of Noise and other bands I do enjoy. However, as a whole I cannot recommend this.

weirde shit

Laibach walked so Rammstin could run

Weird and crazy. Scary vocals.

Not a fan

If they ever have the Nuremberg rallies again, this will be the soundtrack. Glorious 80s pomp, but ultimately a bit shit.

Nah. Didn't really like this. Didn't hate it. But just not into. It was quite repetitive at times.

What a bizarre listening experience. This is what you get when you mix Industrial German Metal with 80s pop and I'm still not sure how I feel about it... I didn't exactly find it to be an enjoyable listen, but it was definitely interesting.

An intersection album for sure, perhaps a bit performative. The orchestration was well done but the vocals just kept sounding like Cookie Monster to me

Interesting. Appropriate soundtrack for a movie depicting a soldier's post-WW2 delirium.

Ákveðinn húmor í þessu sem ég fílaði

Virkilega erfitt. Fyrri hlutinn spennandi og öðruvísi en sá seinni alger steypa. Gef þessu tvær stjörnur fyrir tvær útgáfur af life is life (og queen cover).

really strange, theatrical, industrial sound.

Not my thing. Maybe with additional listens & translation of lyrics. 2/5

Got an extra star for the album cover.

Sounds like German rock.

Found this really weird.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is an industrial album in German. At first, I did not care for this at all and couldn't wait for it to be over, but I stuck it out and it grew on me a little bit. It is still a bit harsh and unmelodic for me, and the vocals are rougher than I like. I would not listen again but I am fine to have heard it once.

Did not care for this album. Not my cup of tea!!!!

I do not enjoy this.

Not my style.

This is the kind of thing I was expecting a lot more of. Bands I’ve never heard of from countries I didn’t consider doing weird hybrids of the music of the time and the future, like the missing link between INXS and Rammstein. Definitely interesting but definitely not for me.

In a parallel universe the Cookie Monster now fronts a German Queen tribute rock band! It was a bit of fun and that’s about it.

These guys sound like that one dinosaur themed metal band for kids from Scandanavia... not my thing

Hey you know what a great song is? “Live is Life” by Opus.

It's not every day you get to listen to a Queen cover in German. Rock on?

Sameish all the way through

While I didn't love it, it grew on me. I still don't think I'll be re-listening to it anytime soon.

p578. 1987. 2 stars. German opera-rock. Amusing for a couple of tracks, then becomes tedious.

Another album I don’t know why it was put on this list. There isn’t anything wrong with it, but it isn’t groundbreaking or very remarkable

Ich liebe das nicht

80s Rammstein w/cookie monster singing

I have little to no experience with German music. It makes me happy that every type of person in this world has the opportunity to combine all the things that has made an impression on them and spit out something unique and worth experiencing. That said, this one did not click with me. I found the marching rally aesthetic to be campy and over the top, the slow plodding drums and guitar got old pretty quick. There were moments I enjoyed where the guitar got a little more technical though.

Certainly is something. Has some funny ones but nothing too crazy

Political and sung in German, some queen links

Couldn't tell if this was ironically fascist or not.

Не люблю цей гурт.

Laibach are the teutonic equivalent of the Mike Flowers Orchestra, best experienced in singles form. Two cracking gag covers. The rest of their sturm and drang rather passes me by.

Feels like I’m about to go to war for the Germans

Maybe it’s because I’ve been playing a lot of Silksong recently, but this gave me epic video game boss vibes. The music is the culmination of the whole thing, and the “singing” is the weird sounds the little bugs make. “How the West Was Won” is weirdly Nazi-ish, and brings my score down.

I wasn't sure what a Yugoslav avant garde album with that cover would sound like, but after listening, this is exactly what a Yugoslav avant garde album with that cover would sound like.

Not my thing. It could be that I don’t understand the lyrics, but the music with the lyrics appears to be a joke within a joke.

What a strange and surprisingly catchy album. I don't know how to categorize them, but there must be some overlap with the RAMMSTEIN fandom.

2 stars for the album cover only, otherwise dear god what did I just listen to

I didn’t understand what the hell they were singing about, but I hope it’s something about nazism being bad

Unfortunately reading the Wikipedia article about the band and the art movement was more interesting than listening to the album

A couple of fun songs (cover of Life is Life) but otherwise a bit of a chore to listen to.

Good toe tapping music while marching to the front.

Strange. And kind of creepy. But also a bit fun.

The actual music wasn’t that bad but it was very weird.

Interesting genre but this is not for me

Interesting ideas musically but wow are the vocals bad

I mean at least it was unique, but still…painful

Who knew Cookie Monster songs in German? Weird, unique, and interesting for sure. But not for me.

The popularity of reviews on this site baffles me. Controversial albums in particular. This record currently sits at a lowly 2.39 average rating after more than 15000 listens. What I have noticed about the reviews on albums like these is that the garbage rises to the top. They almost always contain references to bodily functions, meaning that the average mental age of this platform ranges from 6-13. I’m not saying I’ll like this record. In fact, when it was teased that there will be an industrial cover of a Queen song entirely in German, I suddenly remembered my headphones are broken and I am busy today. With that said, this is a plea to the most dimwitted amongst you. Learn jokes besides “poop” and “sex.” That is all. Be like me. Copy the Simpsons until people forget their jokes and start attributing them to me. THAT’s the adult way. Leben Heißt Leben - New character used in a review. Apparently this band is from Slovenia? What’s with the German? I don’t know man. I wanted to like this; but it’s anthemic German Rock. It SUCKS. Music for Rammstein fans who are somehow more racist. Gebert Einer Nation - Gerber baby nation. Rise up. It’s TIME to divest our stock options with Gerber and invest in a NEW baby product manufacturer. Listen, I like the horns on this one, and the vocals are good, but I’m still just kind of bemused. Leben - Tod - Google, please tell me what Nine Inch Nails is in German. Ahh. Neun-Zoll-Nägel. This is like a worse version of that. It’s a simple riff with gruff, growled vocals. It’s not that bad, but I’m just kind of bored by the repetition and pomp. F.I.A.T - Oh boy! More military sounds. The spoken word sections debut the first English passages of the record. I’m not sure what “Hugger-Muggered” means but I like it. Sounds threatening and adorable. This hooked me slightly but it lost its lustre as it continued. Opus Dei - DEI?? Uh oh. Better call the worst person you know and tell them to avoid this album. They might find out about a woman with a job, and you wouldn’t want to ruin their day. Wait, isn’t this the English version of the first song? Not good. Trans-National - We’re really falling off if a cliff here. When the bizarre, discordant horns show up, the song is much cooler, but the martial, rhythmic chanting can go anytime. How the West Was Won - Not with this track! The Great Seal - Yeah that’s a pretty big seal. There seems to be some visceral hatred for this record. I was looking forward to that because I assumed it would at least give me some extreme feeling one way or the other. It did not. This was just sort of trance-like and any cogent political message was lost on me as a non-German speaker and overall simpleton. I don’t care about this. When this is referenced again as son controversial, divisive record I will have to strain to recall anything about this. No reason for this to be on here. You want to make an impact by being weird? Try being weirder. You want to make an impact by being a band that makes “martial industrial music?” Seek help. 1.5-2 HIGHLIGHTS: i liek wen dey march

Uh this is a record. 2, probably high 1. Confusing to me and I don't enjoy the lyrics

Arguably the most interesting listen so far, especially when considering I didn’t realize it was going to be in German until I hit play (I guess the album and song titles should’ve given it away) All things considered, I had a good time with this album The vocals were very unique and powerful while having some really solid production I probably won’t listen to any of the songs from this album again, but this definitely does not belong with the albums I consider 1 star Favorites: None Honorable Mentions: F.I.A.T.

Absolutely the silliest thing I’ve listened to all year.

Neat but not my jam.

Yeah I don't like this one. I mean it's fine, but very much not my vibe. It might be proto-industrial and a trail-blazer and all that, but a lot of it just creeps me out. The Queen cover with the synths is kinda cool, and I like the English version of the title track, but if I rate this on 'did I enjoy it?', it is a 2 star.

They have others I like better

Creepy German covers on cheesy synths... why is it on the list?

Wtf is that???

It was interesting at first. Completely took me out of my comfort zone and I appreciated that. But then it was just was too long.

Not a fan of the singing, but the music was OK (if a little repetitive)

I dont think I understand 💔

Dosta smiješan album, ne mogu ovo shvatiti ozbiljno 😶‍🌫️ 2/5, 3/10

Bizarre. I don’t understand how this could be repeated listening…or even enjoyable listening. This is probably what silence sounds like for Stephen Miller.

I appreciate its position in industrial music history, as well as the bands aesthetics. Just not an album for me.

Well, that was a thing.

Groupe inconnu. =>2/5

Was zum fick bin ich hörend. So absurd das es schon wieder lustig ist.

too out there for me but appreciated its novelty

This is #day362 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… in the words of my wife, who's a big industrial music fan: industrial music has its limits. This band is a case in point. Maybe I'm just not a huge fan of martial/military kind of industrial. I find it hard to fully embrace this kind of aesthetic when it's the band's entire identity. The interpretations of "One Vision" and "Life Is Life" are particularly hilarious. Sure, Laibach are the pioneers of the genre and all that, but I just can't. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day363.

+1 for singing in three languages: English, German, and Slovene. The trappings of totalitarianism are problematic as there is no clarity as to whether it is a parody, irony, or what. I find the music rather monotonous over all. There are bits to it that are interesting but most of it collapses into a rather plain pastiche. with a kind of pop sound to it in many cases. Needs work.

I was listening to this and thinking the voice sounded familiar, but I couldn’t place why. And then it dawned on me: Cookie Monster. That’s not a compliment.

no notes

well...

Title track opens like a Universal film. Vocals sound like a 60-year-old Strong Bad.

The production was dope, but the singer's voice and style gets old very quick.

Olihan taas erikoinen.

I wasn't expecting to hear a German cover of Queen's "One Vision" today. The theme of the album early on is industrial, with very prominent driving drums and some aggressive German vocals. Things change drastically after about three tracks in, bringing more of a nationalist, rallying cry sort of vibe. I didn't hate how the album started, but the direction it took afterwards was a little off-putting.

I’m not metal enough

Hahahahaha oke stuk. Opus Dei is een Duitse versie van Life is life. 2 reten

My favorite summer BBQ music!

Eigenartige Musik…

Really not to our taste. You can understand why some people imply this is "fascist music" even if the band say it's just ironic. Even if we did enjoy this deep droning, it was bizarrely repetitive to the point of believing we had restarted an earlier song (we had not).

Va falloir que ça s'arrête un moment donné. Ça peut pas continuer comme ça éternellement. J'peux tolérer l'existence de cet album mais personne au monde a besoin d'entendre ça.

Felt like I was being indoctrinated into the military. There is definitely a mastery of the instruments by band members, but did I enjoy actually listening to it? Not really. Fave part was in Jagerspiel when the dudes are going "will they pickle me pickle me pickle me, will they pickle me pickle me pickle me"

unfortunately, i just could not get into this album. not something i would typically listen to

Kind of repetitive, doesnt help that I dont understand German. Feels like I'm part of some sort of revolution. There are moments that were bangers (sampling winston churchill's speech) along with some pretty creative moments that spiced it up Favourite Song: The Great Seal

Slovenian band singing songs from 80s in German. Sounds like a parody, but I suspect it isn't. I bravely soldiered on until the middle, when I couldn't take it anymore. 1.5/5

Hmm, that’s a lot to take on for casual listening. It seems humorous almost but I’m not sure that’s the intended goal. Very theatrical sonic production but personally, I don’t know how to connect with this emotionally or sonically. Am I glad I listened, I mean, sure?…but to quote the title track “… we’re all glad it’s over.”

nice noises but bit garageband for me

It's better than I was expecting but I can't say I'll go back to it again. I was actually surprised to recognise a song from it (the title track)

Kind of liked the first half but good god it got real bad and dragged at the end

I was not prepared for how German this was.

Not my jam. Not the language barrier.

Overall not for me but very interesting

I found this pretty impenetrable, but it was at least novel.

Earlier less heavier version of Rammstein to an American.

2.2 Hahaha wow. That isn't what I was expecting. Fascinating to hear practically the birth of a sub-branch Industrial rock/metal without them even realising that's what they were doing. Title track is the only one I recognise, and it certainly is a tough listen overall. Ending was nice (excluding the 4 bonus tracks on Spotify). It's something new, it helped form a genre, but in isolation is tough to listen to. Nailed on 2 stars.

part auditory hell, part kitchy goofy european rock. sometimes it's too corny sounding for words, sometimes it's really difficult to listen to. a challenging listen but not in the right way for me. i don't know how to describe it really but it's not challenging in a fun way, the harder to listen to parts are just really ugly and dissonant and the easier to listen to parts are kind of dorky and annoying. i dunno. it sounds like a marching band had a baby with a bunch of mechanical noise. not my thing.

I can't take this very seriously, but it is more listenable than expected. FIAT and Trans-National have some good industrial drive.

When we all give the power We all give the best Every minute in the hour We don't think about the rest And everyone gives everything And every soul everyone will feel Life is life!

First one! German! lots of horns so far, which I like. Very theatrical in a way. A little repetitive which I don't love. Almost sounds like there's an organ?! Being in an another language isn't my favorite and I'm not a huge fan of the singers voice, it's almost comedic in a way? Still loving the horns. The singer sounds like Animal from the muppets to me. Getting sick of it by the 3rd or 4th song. It sounds like a soundtrack from a weird 80s muppet ride or something. I can't imagine sitting down and actually listening to this unironically. It needs visuals or something. It's somehow a bit boring and yet grating at the same time. Not a fan. I do like the horns and the almost march feel to a lot of the songs. I think without the singing I'd like it a lot more.

I cannot tell if this is parody, or serious. Certainly they seem to be performing in earnest. Weird, and not in a good way.

this was a helluva thing to listen to at 7:30am. def not my thing, but felt the need to google translate the lyrics bc of how fascist vibe was. lyrics seemed ok!

I thought I might enjoy this, as some industrial is interesting. But man this just dragged on. Grunting in German over a military march.

So Operatic! So Teutonic! So Martial! So Ridiculous!

Anytime I work out I just want this project to give me a nice, melodic, rock or pop album. Instead they always give me the weirdest, most difficult shit lol. Always foreign ambient music or 60+ minutes of experimental electronica. This album is kind of both of those things! Idk what to rate it. It’s not the worst thing I’ve heard, but I also didn’t really enjoy it at all. It sounded like an ogre grunting over instrumentals from Mario 64. 1.5 I guess

It feels unfair to rate this because it very clearly is not my favorite genre and frankly sort of scares me to listen to. Having said that, there were some cool 80s beats and synth things happening and I liked that. I'm glad it's over and I don't have to feel this uncomfortable anymore.

little scary

I just don't know

There were some things I appreciated about this album-the clear influential industrial sound (though there are more industrial influential bands I prefer) and the line “ha ha get me a light beer.” The backstory is cool, but the irony doesn’t sound, uh, I dunno, that ironic, which makes me uncomfortable. Album cover is cool. If this album was like 1/3 as long I’d probably rate it higher.

Not really for me. Pass.

Somebody needs to explain this to me. Listening to Opus Dei, I felt like I was in an even more dystopic version of The Wizard of Oz.

This album had its good moments, but also its repetitive moments. I do like how the song Opus Dei samples Live is Life by Opus. High 2/5

One of the most profoundly strange albums that the generator has offered up. I appreciated its unique vibe and sound, but I can’t say I enjoyed much of the actual music. Best song: Opus Dei

The guitar solo in the middle of Lieben HeiBt Leben was completely unexpected. I couldn't bring myself to list to the rest of the album though. To me, it sounds like monks chanting.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Don’t get it

What an unexpected ride. This one seemed to be a few actual good songs packaged around a bunch of super artistic type music. I'm battling with defining whether I liked this one or not. Can't say I would listen again, but this is another album that deserves to be on this list solely for the uniqueness of it.

This album has personality and I don't like that personality. I like my industrial real gay not fake gay

2.75 just not breaking the language barrier.

Dystopia ironic fascist Euri dirge. Not buying it.

No idea what he’s saying, but “Leben - Tod” was kinda cool, the rest felt like it should be in some Lord of the Rings anime remake (and not a good one). His voice is certainly interesting, I wonder what he sounds like live. Might have to find out. Can’t say I’ll listen to it again.

It was okay

Comedy glod

Certainly different. More interesting than Coldplay who just thieved 6 hours of my life. But not my kinda music.

"Opus Dei" is the third studio album by Slovenian and Yugoslav avant-garde music group Laibach. The Wiki-listed genres are martial industrial (offshoot of industrial) and neoclassical dark wave (characterized by dark, romantic and bleak lyrics). Sometimes, you learn two new things in a day. Rico Coming produced the album. "Leben heißt Leben" opens a crowd chanting and a pounding percussion. Horns and a very deep voice are brought in. Lyrics in German. This song is a reworking of Austrian pop band Opus' "Live Is Life." Enter an organ and a distorted guitar solo. A chaotic ending with opera-like voices. Woah! "Geburt einer Nation" covers Queen's "One Vision." Rhythmic drums and a wavering synth. This is a little more poppy than the previous song. It's an interesting juxtaposition between the poppy music and the industrial mechanical pounding and deep throttled vocals. "Opus Dei" is another reworking of Opus' "Live is Life." This time it's in English; there's horns, marching drums and a deep voice repeating "life is life." Dramatic! The closing song "The Great Seal" opens like the theme from "Star Wars." A military marching band. Very regal. Mostly instrumental. And, this is the anthem of the NSK State (Neve Sloweinische Kunst is a political art collective that formed in Slovenia in 1984. I'm confused as to what that exactly is so I'll just stop there.). Well, this music is unique; industrial mechanical pounding beats (very similar to late 80's Ministry) mixed with classical, anthemic, soundtrack, guitar, synth and/or horn-focused music. Songs might have combinations of these elements. The vocals are deep and guttural: half in German and other ones in English. Overall, I would say that if you like industrial, there's a chance you'd like this. I am not sure where I stand on it; I didn't dislike it but I serious doubt I will ever listen to it again...Soooo, there you go.

Not opposed to German rock, but this just didn’t hit for me.

I want to rank this 1/5, but I can’t. I couldn’t help but find myself smiling intermittently throughout. The album is ludicrous, abrasive, offensive, but something about it is unabashedly unique. It felt like I was at cult meeting for the German Steel Workers Union. Crazy stuff.

I tried my best but I did not succeed. Can’t manage a full hour of this. Having more fun reading their Wikipedia page than I am listening to the album. Maybe I’ll try again one day

Sometimes I see albums that have songs with no more than 40k plays and I wonder if the only people that are listening to that crap are we, the people doing this list. Anyways, this is not my thing. Some songs were borderline ok-ish, but the rest was just hard to listen to.

First album I've received through this by a group I'd never heard of. Mildly enjoyable in places, but I can't imagine seeking it out again.

Day383 - this sounds like a goofy movie soundtrack

Weird. I enjoyed some songs. Some were too weird.

This is… I don’t know what this is, but I’m happy to have gotten it, and I can’t wait till I have a reason to play it for someone else. (ntm.)

Superreptitve lyrics. Dark and political with a lot of gunshots, loud drums, crowd noises, chanting, and some explosions. Very influenced by WWII and the troops in Wizard of Oz. Couldn’t help but laugh when Arhnold’s cousin took the mic. I hope this isn’t the only local music they have in Slovenia cause this album sounded like the score to a German World War II movie. Better name would’ve been Maibach! (1.6*s)

How about some anti-fascist, battle rally, Hall of the mountain king music for your morning commute? Everyone get out of my waaaay yaaaa! The last 20 mins was kinda cool but repetitive. I like the mixing on the soldier march song "Herz-Felde." The band has a thing about reinterpreting rock music with some Queen titles making this album (I did not notice. Also don't listen to their "Let it Be" cover album...woof). Def influence on some more later bands of the genre like Rammstein, maybe even Muse a bit. An interesting band but too military. Give them a boost for being Slovenian...2.2.

Okay album. I didn’t dig this at all. It seemed like the band was trying perform a German rock opera. I think the musicianship was there but the album couldn’t end early enough for me.

Cookie Monster like light beer. Ja! Ja! Ja!

it's not my mood at the moment but i can appreciate

Another meh fest.

Laibach is a Slovenian group that makes "martial industrial" - industrial music with a militaristic bent, all performed as a parody, of sorts. The band presents rock concerts as absurd political rallies. The album includes the band's biggest hit, "Live is Life," also known as "Opus Dei." This is dark, foreboding music, that seems like a soundtrack to a dystopian film.

We get it, you're German.

Listening to this felt like being cornered by the most self serious dude at an otherwise fun party.

Never cared much for them though I quietly admire their tenacity in sticking to the bit. Unfortunately, that wry line between parody and endorsement is uncontrollable. At least when it comes to Opus Dei, it's clear to me that the music itself is not to my taste.

Thoughts before listening: No idea what this. I have never seen the cover or heard of the band. Based on the cover I'm guessing some sort of industrial, goth type sound...also probably very European. Review: Well I wasn't exactly right on the sound although pretty close I guess. This album feels like an 80s version of Rammstein with music sounding like hair metal meets a Nazi rally or something. Distorted guitars with synth sounds and military marching drum beats backing up barked and growled German lyrics. This is quite the album. I'm not so sure I am enjoying this despite being interesting so I will give this 2-stars.

Reminds me of dungeon synth. Could be classified as that I think. Not my type of album though. Maybe I should listen with headphones next time

Nick would love this.

I mean this was wild. From the Monty Python style album-art onwards. Enjoyable in some sense but also hearing a gruff Slovenian belching out Queen was just odd.

Heel slecht! Koopt iemand dit? **

This sounds like a Nazi march soundtrack. The only thing I liked about was the drumming.

This started very strong, but Herz-Felde is a massive question mark to me... Strong record, makes me want to topple some statues. And then a super experimental chopped sample song comes on for 5 minutes that kills the entire flow? The opening of Jagerspiel had me scared it would continue - and then it did. This suddenly went from great industrial music to a failed version of MGMT. Deserves to be on the list, but more of a show of missed potential than a great record. I think the Spotify listening numbers of the version linked here tell a very clear story. Rough. First section is 8/10, everything past Herz-Felde a 1/10. Total a 4/10. Shame.

I love German culture, but this…? I cannot get along with it. It’s almost a stereotype with its guttural vocals and opera-esque arrangements. It’s not for me

I've heard worse on this list, maybe.

I definitely liked my fair share of industrial music in the '90s, and I can definitely hear how this band influenced many of those bands (I don't know enough about the genre and what came out when to know exactly who influenced whom). But one thing I can tell you: I hated this. From what I can understand, the whole military sound thing was some sort of schtick? That we aren't supposed to take it seriously? I don't know. It just wasn't enjoyable to listen to. The vocals were harsh and discordant and the sounds abrasive, but not in a "this rocks my face off" sort of way. A couple of songs had some cool moments, like the ending to the first track, but overall this was just bad.

Describing this album as ‘electronic’ is like suggesting that all amplified music is electronic. I’m not a fan of genres anyway, so I don’t know why I am fixating on this.

Mixed feelings. Some Songs entertaining, others simply anoying

Neem de nummers opnieuw op belcanto-stijl, een accordion en een jolige volkszanger en ik zou het hoger geven

This kinda grew on me as I listened to it. It's definitely its own thing, so gets points for that. Mostly it felt like a joke that I wasn't in on.

Y'know, this album wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It really isn't all that good, at least to my American brain, but there are parts where I think the militaristic march pairs well with the silly fake horns and stuff to create an oddly uplifting Industrial sound, something you don't get a lot from the genre. Now, I'll admit that has me worried because prideful German + 80s Industrial usually equals something pretty bad, but it quotes Churchill at the end, so maybe we're all good there? Either way, this album has its charm. I don't think it's worth listening to outside of the context; production is poor, singing is strained, and you get the schtick with song one, but it's certainly better than acts like Rammstein, and that has to mean something, right? Right? Meh, still, I'd almost get one of those other questionable German acts in here. They may have iffy lyrics, but at least the music sounds good.

I mean it was a surprise when I heard a German version of a Queen song. But overall not for me.

Absolutely mental, first song knew my Uncle would be a fan of them and he was Worth listening to for their Opus and Queen covers

They say this album was hugely influential for industrial music, and I guess I can see that. I associate industrial with NIN, which released Pretty Hate Machine in 1989, two years after this album. Anyhow, some of this music has that industrial/buzzy guitar/synth sound, but some also has kind of a poppy 80's sound. The voice...I just can't get into that. Some tracks verged on scary circus music, and some of the last tracks were just really hard to get through ("Herz-Felde" and "Jagerspiel"). I find it weird that the band spent most of their career doing covers. And I'm not into the schtick of wearing military uniforms and avoiding "breaking character" in interviews - seems like too much of a show.

If nothing else, it gave me a chance to brush up on my German. I can see why the singer from Ministry would be a fan, even if I won't be racing back to it.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from an industrial Slovenian band performing Queen covers in German, but it was not as bad as the global reviews led me to expect. I can see through lines to other militaristic industrial bands (though that might just be the guttural German singing.) Didn't hate it but not really my thing - and amazing to think that music like this exists that *is* someone's thing.

im surprised this is one of the worst albums rated on this website its far better than dozens of others albums i already listened to here, but, sadly, its still not particularly good. intro is strong, but everything from track 5 onwards completely lost me YNN

Not my soeed

One of the weirdest Queen covers you’ll ever hear and some other songs that, while commendable for their audacity, won’t resonate beyond a specific niche. Cool cover, though.

Rammstein without the sweet guitars

Definitely awful but also hilarious. Like a video soundtrack playing in the back of otherwise metal

If you ever wanted to know what Ramstein would sound like as an 80's synth wave band, this is for you. It is unfortunately NOT for me.

Didn't listen, just wanted to say I enjoyed your review, Tom.

Can't believe it took me 1084 days to hit my first Slovenian German language industrial rock album.

"Honey, we have Rammstein at home".... Rammstein at home:

Not my thing.

Favorite Track: Opus Dei

Jesus Christ

Started off finding this weird, but fun, however the novelty quickly wore off and then it was just weird

Weird album, found it interesting but lost interest in the music towards the end. That said, I did spend the entire hour going down a rabbit hole of reading about Laibach, and still not sure if I understand what they're about. Will probably listen to more out of curiosity.

Didnt finish it

I wanted to like this album, but that fact that multiple of the more interesting tracks were covers, and the rest of the songs were repetitive and uninteresting left a sour taste. The best part of this album is the album art. 2/5

My immediate reaction was this must be a parody of a medieval-based musical stage production. It's so over the top, it can't be a serious band, but incredibly I was wrong. The vocals are out-front and huge sounding, somewhere between Cookie Monster and an angry German dictator and the music is all over the place with a definite "empire" stately sound to it. I've never heard anything like this, so it's difficult to be critical, but as far as enjoying it, I'm not so sure. I appreciate the range and variety on this list, that's why it's so appealing and fun, but what the heck?

This album really pissed me off, and not just for the reasons I'm sure it's annoyed everyone who's had to listen to it because it's on this list. It's the fact that albums like this exist on the list, while so many amazing metal albums are excluded. This glaring oversight seriously undermines the credibility of what this list is supposed to represent. Look, I get it—death vocals can be a hard sell for someone without a metal background or context. But then, what the HELL is this? It's like some German industrial metal-adjacent band that, even for someone who enjoys some of the sounds here, found completely GRATING. It's honestly embarrassing. Either remove music like this or open the gates to include the heavier side of music, you weirdos.

Industrial covers of Queen? Weird-psuedo facist arena rock? Why not - it's these albums on the outer edges of my listening that I'm here for. Some of it sounds like Arnie singing to you - which is always good. You can't help but think the band are performing with a smile and wink while performing it and hoping we are in on the joke too. Best Track: Geburt Einher Nation; Opus Dei; How The West Was Won

Ja nein.

Digging the videos for this.

Batshit crazy Yugoslavian industrial-military metal. There are actually some pretty cool moments here and some rather terrifying ones. Sometimes you just have to Laibach, think of England and welcome discovering something a bit different.

I bet they put on the sickest live show, but I didn’t dig the album.

Kinda like "The Wall" without the good parts.

I appreciate the drama, just not the literal sounds I'm hearing. 2.

Yeah, this ain’t for infants. I kinda vibed with it for a bit though. 2/5

That...was...interesting

Laibach's Opus Dei is a bold, industrial reimagining of classic pop. Their signature blend of militaristic beats and choral vocals transforms familiar tunes into haunting anthems. The album is a provocative listen, challenging perceptions of music and power. While not for everyone, it's undeniable that Laibach's unique approach creates a powerful and thought-provoking experience.

Surprisingly unforceful. And terrible stadium chanty lyrics

I wish I liked this more, I really do, but there’s just no variety here. As good as the first song is, you can’t just have more of the same for the rest of the album.

I remember it was high school & MTV started playing the video for Opus Dei (or was it called "Life is Life" back then?) & I thought this is bonkers (an early version of wtf). I really couldn't decide if these guys were satirizing or actually pushing Nazi propaganda. After all, no internet. Then, the following year they came out with a start-to-finish cover album of Let It Be & I started to clue in. Weird & curious stuff but all-in-all too tedious for a full hour.

"Construction sounds"

Some positives but a lot of cons.

Oof this was hard to listen to

It reminded me of the first Young Gods' eponymous first album that came out the same year, and prefer much more

Not sure how this made the list

Marching band ass drums Kinda silly

Not loving this out of the gate. It has all the markings of all the 80s pop-rock tropes that I dislike. Among them, compressed/distant sounding drums, sterile mixing, synthetic bright horns. Add to this a Rammstein-esq vocal delivery that feels completely unmatched to the mood of the instrumental. Leben - Tod is the first song that I actually enjoyed here. Still very 80s, but it is built around a more aggressive meatier "riff" that, to me, fits the mood of the vocals better. Not a fan of the album namesake -- too grandious for me. Trans-National; however, alludes to musical depth that the additional bonus tracks demonstrate more fully. This is like some early techno/industrial and is one of the stronger tracks here. Also enjoy How The West Was Won, but I found The Great Seal to be a low note to end on. The bonus CD tracks are where this album actually makes its strongest case to me. First time I was listening, I drifted off and came to during Jagerspiel. Had to double check that the album didn't change, this was so different than where we started (in the best of ways). On second listen I realize the transition started earlier - the track before (Herz-Felde) is built around a number of layers vocal loops and is really quite interesting. Reminds me in some ways of Nicolas Jaar's work as A.A.L. Discounting the bonus tracks, this album is one of extremes for me. I hated some songs and really enjoyed others. Going with a high 2 here.

The first half was pretty enjoyable and I wholeheartedly had it cruising to a 3 star review. Unfortunately it took a turn toward not being music anymore and just being some industrial percussion BS. Standouts were Opus Dei and The Great Seal. I wanted this to hold onto a 3 so badly, but the end wasn't really music anymore.

Well. Ok, this was...something.

It was fine although Jojah said something about Slovenian fascists idk - 5/10

Interesting cover. Seems like this band is ironically fascist. Lot of boring songs, some good ones that sound the same. High 2.

3/10 - as this album went on my rating just went lower and lower. It started at like a 6 then I got sick of the German so it dropped to like a 5 and then the second half of the album was just so bad then it went to a 3

It was quite a rough listen if I'm going to keep it for a buck. Some interesting parts kept me intrigued, but this industrial metal album wasn't for me. The only song that I enjoyed was The Great Seal, which I thought was decent. Other than that, this album was a bit of a chore to listen to. I won't be coming back to this anytime soon. Best - The Great Seal Worse - Leben-Tod, FIAT, Trans-national 2.25-2.75/5

Was kind of into it for the first 30 minutes then it fully lost me. I wonder if King Gizzard took influence from the robot voice for Murder of the Universe

Awful military shit

I kind of like Geburt Einer Nation

Album cover saves it.

had like 1 banger.

I like industrial... this was a tough one to get through. As a plus, I now have a new way to torture my child if he doesn't do his math homework. 2/5

I don’t understand the aesthetic of just looping something 90 times a minute with a tinny sounding snare and Sousa march sounding bass drums, so I didn’t particularly enjoy this album that either is the source of the stereotype of German 80s music or is just the stereotype distilled into its quintessence.

Música marcial industrial. Estresante. Un 2.

How silly. Maybe this would be more enjoyable if I understood German, but those synth sounds grate on the ears very quickly. It's cheeseball and metal at the same time? Certainly unique to my ears, but not for me.

Un rock muy oscuro ¡esloveno! La voz es como que recita todo el tiempo. Es bastante una mierda pero la atmósfera que crea de fondo es atrapante.

this is about what i'd expect from slovenian "cool" music in the eighties.

It's not my jam, but it's not awful. Kinda reminds me of Gwar for its campiness, but just a different, electroclash sort of sound.

it's cool but it is not my thing

2.5 stars? I was interested when I saw a description that Laibach is industrial music. This is more like ... dark metal music? The bassy vocal performance isn't something that I like. And some songs sound like 80s video game soundtracks. Honestly the descriptions of their other albums sound more interesting. I just wasn't for me. I don't yet understand why these Slovenian guys are cosplaying as Germans. I have found some intriguing articles and analysis about the band, but I don't want to have to do extensive research to "get" their music. Perhaps I will if I'd like to delve into the Laibach discography.

Unclear if the fascism is a bit or not. Yikes, but I actually didn't mind the music. I probably won't listen to this again, but it was interesting.

Did not like it. I am not a fan of Rammstein either. I understand this group's influence and it is likely a major movement change but not my style.

Interesting. It is certainly different.

I knew "hard, borderline fascist sounding music in German language" was a thing because of Rammstein. I can appreciate the original compositions and often surprisingly poetic lyrics. I didn't think there was a market for "pop songs covered by alternate timeline industrial metal Nazis" You don't get the original compositions or lyrics that go beyond whatever Germans say in American 2nd world war era movies, but at least you get to experience something that is far, far from mainstream.

i wasn't really sure how to take this at first. in reading about it, i realized that the music is satire, though I needed to do some homework to get that. musically, i wanted it to hit harder, though some of the tunes were all right. I checked out their cover of the Beatles' Let it Be album, and on that one, the satire is more obvious. (Although their cover of Across the Universe is gorgeous. Go check it out.) Anyway, I'm glad I heard these guys even if i won't be going back to listen to them. i see where Rammstein got their start.

I can appreciate their intellectual approach and I can dig their aesthetic ... but only for about two songs and then it's simply too much. I was listening to the lyrics and had to double check I wasn't streaming some neo-nazi hasse Muzik. They walk a fine line particularly for an international audience. But at the end of the day, it did not have a beat and I couldn't dance to it.

I read a comment saying cookie monster singing and now i can’t unhear it. this was piss. album cover was troll and F.I.A.T wasn’t bad. 2

Generally not a big fan of the german language in music, but this album made me doubt about that in the beginning. The first half of the album was good and surprising. Towards the end it got reparative and I lost my interest. Favourite song: - Opus Dei

I appreciate this album for what it is, but it’s not one I’m going to listen to again. Didn’t hate it, just didn’t hit the spot for me.

It’s this sort of proto-Rammstein industrial rock that I’m really averse to. It’s an amalgamation of strange gurgling German covers of already-mediocre songs, combined with a soundscape fit for greasy-haired neckbeard neo-nazis. Actually, scratch that comparison. The last song includes an excerpt from a fucking Churchill speech. How on Earth did this make it onto the list.

The German chanting went a little long and was just strange. Surprised I knew a song on this, pretty sure I’ve heard it at a sporting event before. 2/5 Won’t listen again

like Rammstein but not cool

I remember the cover of Live is Life from it was originally out. Still find it hilarious, awful lyrics, terrible voice; marvellous. An albums worth I really didn’t need though. RAUS!

Quite strange and I can’t think of a circumstance when I’d want to listen to it again but I didn’t mind the chance to giggle along to the weirdery.

Just not very enjoyable. If your going to listen to something like this just go for Rammatein and be done with it.

Dude, I don't even know. Angry german yelling. Maybe yelling is an overstatement. Why is this here?

How the hell did this make the list?

I recently said Pink Floyd's "wish you were here" had the greatest album cover. I was wrong; it goes to this album. not so crazy about the music tho

The music sounds like the stuff they play on the home screen of those old "Medal of Honor" Playstation games - or like the menu of a "Saving Private Ryan" DVD. The vocal are a poor imitation of Rammstein, minus everything that makes Rammstein cool.

I enjoyed the first 5 songs or so. It reminded me a lot Rammstein. Then it got really weird. I will round up because they covered Queen.

……….

Uhh? I don’t know what to make of it. I tend to enjoy avant garde music but this was on the erratically unenjoyable side of the scale, excepting the Queen cover which was kinda cool. Apparently this is “neo-classical”?

Kraftwerk for people who march with tiki torches How the west was won sounds like princes of the universe by queen

Couldn’t listen to it all

Ja! Ja! Nein! Nein!

Weird I mean proper weird. Looked into their history and purpose made less sence.

First track is strangely compelling. Second is laugh out loud bonkers. All went a bit downhill after that, but still entertaining throughout. That voice..!

This sounds like modern Eurovision entries. I got the strong feeling they were aware of how ridiculous they were. Maybe it was their album of Beatles covers that did it. They get an extra star for that.

Leben heißt Leben! Ja! Ja! Get that man a light beer! (if only to wet his gullet, his voice is so gruff!)

Huh. Well at best it was like an opening march to a knock off Terminator movie, at worst it sounded like Nazi step music. I’m uncultured so maybe that’s just how Germanic chanting will always sound to me but the Churchill speech at the end of one song does not help my mind’s association.

This was like listening to a 1970’s B movie starring Danny Trejo. It’s not fair to give it an actual rating because I’m not sure what I just experienced.

Industrial German rock with an experimental edge. I took German in high school and college, so I actually picked up on a few words in the German songs. Laibach reminds me of Rammstein. They must have been an influence on Rammstein. Some of this is cool and I vibe with the antiauthoritarian lyrics. At least, I assume it's anti-government and antiwar. The military drums and call-to-arms vocals feel ironic, like they're making fun of military marches. Anyway, all due respect to Laibach but I'm mostly a polite "No thank you" on this one. Funny to hear their version of “Live is Life.” I know it as a triumphant soccer anthem but the way Laibach play it, it’s much heavier and more serious. The last four tracks on streaming are apparently from a different project but they’re kinda cool. They’re more ambient with looping, chanted vocals. Not exactly something I’m gonna put on again but it was interesting.

Me, having been to Germany one (1) time: “yeah, that letter that looks like a B is actually pronounced ss”

Haha what if we were ironically fascisf? Haha wouldn’t that be funny? Haha what if it was a joke that we made being nationalist a thing again haha right? Heyy where’s everyone going???

Not for me

Definitely worth hearing! Not something I’d play a lot. Too ferociously Germanic. Very interesting. Not a keeper 😁

Not for me

3 goeie nummers en de rest vooral veel rare shit
