Reviews (page 4 of 13)
wow, I only heard simple man and free bird before. The whole album is pure rock, and i love it !
The classic southern rock album. If you've never tried the genre before this is a good place to start. Fortunate Son and of course Free Bird are amazing. The album is solid over all.
Great Southern Rock
Good southern rock album
Lynyrd Skynyrd comes out of the gate with their first album containing iconic songs that would redefine Rock radio forever. While most will remember the album for the half of the 'Classic Rock HOF' (Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Free Bird), the remaining half still delivers some classic Skynyrd southern rock, with their staple triple-guitar attack, delivering boot-stomping rhythm and overdriven lead lines.
All the hits
🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
4.5 - The top tier of classic rock. Simple man is my fave track
The only thing wrong with this album is that Freebird should be about five minutes longer.
One of the all time greats. Pretty much every major Lynyrd Skynyrd hit except for Sweet Home Alabama. Southern rock at its finest. What more is there to say?
Perfect Classic Rock
Absolute masterpiece.
dad rock that slaps
Actually so good
Excellent debut, just love it.
Amazing!
In my light googling i couldn't determine if the band was actually racist, or at least supported "old south", it seems like maybe, maybe not. I'm also not sure how that should effect ranking - yeah it's fucking awful. The music sounded good.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. It made me want to drive around in a big old truck and fire a revolver in the air. The solo in free bird is the definition of musical ecstasy, I was worshiping the gun and the cheeseburger by the end of it.
I mean, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, AND Free Bird all on one album! Essentially, a greatest hits of Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is a classic album and sounds timeless granted this was 1973.
Taking me back home for sure. Can't grow up a southern boy and not know this album front to back!
The archetype of Southern rock and still the best of the genre
Joe Dirt could not have been mpre right about these guys! 10/10 would listen again!!
Banger
So good! Amazing. I finally got to listen to Free Bird after hearing about it in dated television shows and it did not disappoint!
Wow, this is a Southern-fried banger, each song feels fresh and groovy, and it's packed with classics, really enjoyable.
one of the best albums. discovered many new songs 5/5
There are no guilty pleasures but I do like this more than I want to.
a classic
See yesterday - Guitar Hero 2 has the BEST soundtrack. Two in a row! This album is a racist uncle on Thanksgiving. It's got some ass holes behind it, but damn, ain't no way I'm giving Free Bird less than a 5 dude.
Love
Is there anything wrong with this album? I think not.
Freeeeeeee Brib
Banger. At the gym, listening to Gimme Three Steps on the stair climb. Simple Man to slowly get biking before cranking into workout mix. Finish with Alejandro on the treadmill. Great stuff.
There really aren't any skips on the record. I was pleasantly surprised by the tracks I hadn't heard before. Obviously, Free Bird, Gimme Three Steps, Tuesday's Gone, Simple man are all certified hood classics.
Sempre esqueco desses caras
Some classic rock anthems along modern takes on old school blues tunes. Doesn't get much better for Dad rock.
One I have heard before. It's a classic and probably my favorite band of Southern Rock genre. Fun riffs, soulful singing from Van Sant, solos (the most important part of rock and roll imo), and some catchy choruses. Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man stand as some of my favorite songs of all time and Free Bird is always a good time despite it's status as a joke when it comes to live performances. Still a classic. I will come back to this one.
Solid album. Many songs are staples of classic rock.
One of the best albums of all time!
Such a classic of course. Simple man is one of my father’s favorite songs
Several all time great songs. One of my favorites of all time.
Þetta er mín músík. Ég kemst í svo mikinn fíling. Get hlustað endalaust á þessa plötu og aðrar í þessum stíl.
Slow start but a masterpiece follows
Free Bird. Nuff said
Really liked this!
I like the beginning beats with the electric guitar + plsu the low key southern accent. I like Down South Jukin. Also why is there so many people on the album?
Classic rock masterpiece.
I just love lynyrd shynyrd especially the guitar work and harmonies Intro title "I Ain't The One" is really catchy "Tuesday's Gone" is a wonderful bluesy song. The rock/blues is super strong and quite tight "Simple Man" needs no presentation. Such a gem right in the intro. "Things Goin' On" screams good times Man "Free bird" is such an incredible ride. One of my favourite music/solo of all time An old time favourite. Love this album
It's really great. What a classic. I'm going to listen to this a lot more often.
Wow. Plays like a greatest hits. Amazing album
One of the greatest rock albums of all time. No skips
Tuesdays home is one of the best sons ever made
oh shit, the first album is lynyrd skynyrd i actually know about them because their history was interesting to me
One of the all time great rock n roll bands. When you listen to these guys in the context for the era, they were pretty bad ass standouts. This is a good example as to why. One of the all time great bands.
Whoooa, this is really good! I'm assuming it's a remastered album I listened to as it sounds very clean. Much better than I'd given them credit for in my narrow, narrow mind. I reckon this would've been a 4 but because it finishes with Free Bird I'm pumping it up. Standout Track: Simple Man
I bought this CD as a teenager and listened to it heavily for a couple of years. An essential album.
Awesome debut with classic songs
Some absolutely great tunes. Free bird has to be up there with one of the Great guitar solos of all time.
An absolute banger, one of the best albums ever. Not a single skip in it. 5/5
A true classic. Loved it.
Every song on this album is great.
Great Listen, a classic i had only heard the mega hits from. Solid from start to finish
Full of hits. Insane debut.
Excellent from start to finish
Absolute beast of a classic. It took an all-time banger like Free Bird for people to sleep on the rest of the album.
FREE BIRD!
One of my top 10 albums of all time Each side of this album is amazing fav song: simple man 10/10
Excellent hard-edge southern rock
Didn't expect much, but I really enjoyed the album.
Great Album
Its not bad, its got a few good moments but this is where my personal preference influnces by bias. I'm not a huge fan of american rock but i can appreacite it and I appreciate this one. Its just not totally for me. Sonically its good its got some really good riffs, some good vocals and decent lyrics. It feels like I'm on a motorbike going across Route 66 with my mates. All In all its not shit. Its aight. 4/10
The southern rock classic, if this genra was an album it would this one. This album is of know for the magestic Free bird, wich in itself deserved a 5/5. But i never listen to the whole reccord. The first song: I aint the one, is a classic blues rock and generaly this album is very blues rock but still with a hard rockin sound. This song is a good openner. Thuesday's gone is a more soft and very good song a good country-vibe. Gimme three steps feel like a Rollings stone track, but with their southern style off course, very RNB and good lyrics, musicality ect. Simple man is a bit more sentimental song apparently isnpired by the death of Van Zant's grand-mother. Things goin' on is a good country rock song, a bit like what goes on by the Beatles. Very good piano work and good lyrics. Missisipi Kid really look like an old blues song the accustic guitar are very groovy and all. Not a bad song at all Poison Whiskey is a also a good song, about alcool abuse that the band know very well by themself, trouhout their carrer they will struggled with alcool and drugs addiction and wrote various song about their abuse and the danger of drugs. What better way to close an album when you have Free Bird in your repertoire. Its a freaking masterpiece of music and one of the best than mankind was able to ear. In this 9 minutes song, it have 2 part, the first with the guitar intro, and the powerfull voice of Van Zant that sing equaly powerfull and beautiful lyrics. Then in the half of the song the music accelerate toi give place to the magnificent solo by Allan Collins. A nearly 5 minutes long solo (more during live concert) that could honneslty have been 3 differents solos on 3 different song, that would have been great solos but not as legendary. Anyway, go listen to this imediatly, your life would never be the same. The voice of Ronnie Van Zant is what make this band and this album so great, i think he is a underated frontman in rock music and this album really show its potential. But the guitar play of Alans Collins and Gary Rossington really put them in the podium of rock musicians of the 70's. It was their debut album, its hard to tell but its probably the one with the biggest legacy to offer but the have made other really good songs on other reccord. This reccord is not suprisingly very good, i'm glad to finaly listen to it, there so very good song and a legendary song.
This is an all-timer.
Musically very impressive enjoy the bass
I didn't know you could grow a mullet in 76 minutes, but here we are.
The mickey
pas mal...
💯
Great from top to bottom!
Great album, lots of hits. Freebird!!!
I don't care what people think, I love Lynyrd Skynyrd! This album has it all rocking tunes, great ballads and one of the best and guitar solos of all time.
This is a band that needed to be free as a bird from the studio (😑). The studio production does not help them. Despite the constrained feel it puts on the songs, it’s a great record anyway. One More From The Road has several of these songs and it’s one of the greatest live albums ever recorded, especially Free Bird, so I’d rather go there for my Skynyrd fix. This is still a 5 for me. Southern Rock at its finest.
What a great album. So many killer songs and staples of classic rock radio. There are a few easy to define genres of rock and roll with Southern Rock being one of them. And no one does Southern Rock better than Lynryd Skynyrd (but god do I hate typing their name out, I have to double check the spelling everytime!)
Bangers bangers bangers.
Killer debut album. Has their top hits (minus one) and the other songs are good as well. one of my favorite albums
I think this is an easy 4 but I'll show that I too can like things and push it to a 5. The obvious bangers on this one can carry hard and the other songs aren't bad either.
This is the band and the songs I think of when someone says ‘Southern Rock’.
OK... another album tinged with my preconceptions before listening. In this case, I was expecting to be beaten over the head with a lot of pride-of-the-south, "yer aginst us if ya ain't with us" kind of bravado. Truly, even more than "Free Bird," my free-association with Lynyrd Skynyrd is the single line from "Sweet Home Alabama": "Now Watergate does not bother me..." Everyone sings along, but... what? So anyway, I was expecting more of that sort of reaction to the music. But damn, this album is great. Great riffs, great songs, great guitar work and melodies, great lyrics, really solid musicianship. These guys are legends in Southern rock for good reason. This is a really good album. The production is a little rough around the edges, but that fits, too. I am a bit shocked, but I can't see a way out of a 5 star review on this one.
This album has all their hits
Each track of this 8 track album is a standout. Free Bird especially.
5/8, 63%
Helluva debut album
sonzao absurdo, fazendo jus aos hits
YES: classic rock arguably at it's finest. Free bird is legendary and the solo is one of the best hyped up montage songs in existence. I initial clicked play on this album expecting to be stuck with mid music until the last song but I was surprised. Never been met with pure excitement and passion for loving an album off the first few songs, will definitely go into my rotation.
Southern rock at its finest. "What song is it y'all wanna hear?"
Definition of flawless
Another great Skynyrd album
It's just so unbelievably good. Nothing much more to say than that. Favorite track: Simple Man
FREEEEEEEEE BIIIIIIIRDDDDDD
Hell, what a debut album. Can you imagine taking a chance on this new band and being gifted with this, must have blown you away. I would have been telling everyone about this if I had discovered it. These are not good songs, or even great songs, these are stone cold classics of the rock genre. And in Freebird possibly one of the finest rock anthems of all-time. Over time the bands reputation has been tarnished by their allegiance to the confederate flag and the politics and values of the deep south of America. The trading of blows between Skynyrd and Neil Young will go down in the annals of rock history. However, focusing on the music only this is a monster of a record and for me an essential record for any fan of rock.
How can this be their debut album?!?! Almost every great song they’ve done is in this!! I can’t even imagine where they would have gone in their career if they had survived that plane crash. Awesome classic southern rock, my fave. And no matter how old the song is, or how many times I listen to it, that Free Bird guitar solo gives me goosebumps every time! Listen again: definitely Purchase for my collection:yes Favourite Song: Free Bird
Just a masterful album with such incredible all-time classics in "Tuesday's Gone", "Simple Man", and of course, "Free Bird". 9/10
Un classique tout simplment... Simple man, Tuesday's gone, Free bird.
Flawless - one of my favourite albums before, and even more so now. Three all time classics, including possibly the best song ever - simple man. Even the bonus tracks kick ass!
Greatness
Excellent album by an excellent band which would later be reshaped to be a really shitty band by racists. But for that time and that place, they were amazing. 5/5
idk yet
I love listening to debuts, usually a band at their most authentic yet most raw. Follows the Allman’s debut by about 3 years but still sounds like such a fresh and new take on southern rock. Free Bird is face melting, the way RVZ phrases some of the lines in Gimme Three Steps is legitimately funny and the song has a riff that’ll be in my head for a week. I loved every song here, then went to their second record and loved every song there.
Skynert
Straight fire. Good variation in sounds, great guitar. Ending with Free Bird is the cherry on top.
Shockingly good. Amazing title of album.
I liked it a lot. Will likely buy this vinyl.
Does it get a 5 for Freebird alone? I guess so
"(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)" is the debut album by American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Southern rock, hard rock and blues rock. Yeah, and probably the first band I think of for southern rock. The band formed in 1964 and most of these album songs had been part of their live repertoire. The band rehearsed in a place called "Hell House" in their native Jacksonville, FL and by the time they got to the studio, producer Al Kooper stated "every note was immutable and absolutely no improvisation was allowed." Lynyrd Skynyrd was know for their guitar attack called "Three Guitar Army" consisting of Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Ed King (also played bass). Other band members included Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocals), Billy Burns (drums) and Billy Powell (keyboards). "I Ain't the One" gets things going with that bluesy and almost grinding guitar approach. Prominent rhythm guitar by Rossington. A girl accused Van Zant of getting her pregnant but he ain't the one. "Tuesday's Gone" is almost baroque. It's melancholy for sure with the melltron strings and piano. Rossington, now on lead guitar, throws in some classic riffs. The lost of a love one. The first single was "Gimme Three Steps." The classic opening guitar riff with the rhythm guitar and drums kicking in. Based on a story in which Van Zant was dancing with another guy's girl in a bar when that guy walks in with a loaded gun and Van Zant asking for three steps before he starts shooting. The slow opening guitar chord progression begins another rock classic in "Simple Man." The chord progression speeds up for the main chorus. A great guitar solo. A deeper cut highlight on side two is "Poison Whiskey." The band shows its funky and bluesy side. Bass - great. Guitar solo -great. Piano solo - great. People drinking to forget. Even if you're album has sucked all the way up to the last song, if you're last song is "Free Bird," you might have corrected all wrongs. Still the most requested song at every show I go to. Profits in lighters mmediately went up. An organ, slow start. Those classic guitar chords. The song builds and builds until at the 5:00-minute mark, we get those ending layered guitar solos. This song never disappoints, still. This is a great album. A band and album that probably defined southern rock. It's bluesy, funky and great, great guitar. Some of the lyrics are deep and very progressive. About the only thing this album suffers from is that a lot of these songs still get way over-played is some of the establishments I may visit. Well, maybe that's my fault.
What a debut. As strong as it is, and closing with Freebird.
Great Album!
Tremendo disco de Lynyrd papá.
Masterpiece
Top album ! Simple man, free bird, gimme three steps, tuasday's gone. Schijven
Oh man I love Lynyrd Skynyrd. Such a neat sound. Free Bird is like one of the best songs to play on Guitar Hero ever!
Classic album genre defining
Amazing!!!
I'm a FREEE BIRD
I fuck with this. Kick ass, hard rocking Southern boogie rock band. It makes me, a die-hard New Yorker, want to chug some sweet tea and ride ATVs through the mud lol. There are 8 songs on this album and FOUR OF THEM ARE ALL TIME CLASSICS. Free Bird, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Tuesday’s Gone on ONE album?! And it’s a debut?!?!?! Come on. Come ON! Not a single skip or dud on this album. 'Nuff said. (Though I will say that it genuinely bothers me they got their own phonetic spelling wrong, lol)
This band should really be singing about Drive-By Truckers So. Many. Bangers. Dan and I once went to a Lynyrd Skynyrd show back in 2011 at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Dan got the worst chigger bites I have ever a human get. We then went back to my apartment in Towson which I had just moved into that day and sat with Mike Myers and crushed a bag of Franzia while watching Always Sunny and playing pong. Dan thought that the bed he slept on gave him bed bugs and it almost made me move out of my apartment in one day
THIS is southern rock, not that drive-by bullshit. Obvious classics like Free Bird, Simple Man, and that song from Happy Gilmore. Some of the songs I didn't know beforehand I could also jam to.
What a banger! This debut album is just stellar. The guitar work is some of the best the world has ever been treated to.
I hate that I feel compelled to give this album a 5 because like, I hate Lynyrd Skynyrd in so many ways. But - at the same time - they did kind of invent/perfect southern rock. They merged blues, country, and rock into a unique sound that a lot of people copied. . Plus, I didn't realize that basically every LS song I know (minus Sweet Home Alabama) ended up on the same album - and it was their debut. Therefore, one could argue that it was all downhill for them after this - which is fair. But this album - I Ain't the One, 3 Steps, Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird - that's an impressive rookie performance. I was hopeful maybe I'd be able to hate some of the lesser-knowns, but Things Goin' On and Poison Whiskey were solid tracks as well. Bottom line, I liked this album all the way through and - if you're going to listen to one album that "represents" the entire genre of southern rock, it's this one. Dammit.
Holy crap what a good album. Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Free Bird on the same album??? Absolutely insane first album. Absolutely defines rock and roll
Always one of my favourites. Great album
What an album. Great tracks on here
An absolutely incredible album. What more can be said about this album?? The A-Side is literally perfect and B-Side is not far behind! This album brings me back to listening to it in my dads old dodge van as a kid. I mean how can you too Free Bird as an album ender??? Just such a good album 10/10!
So many iconic songs on this album. This level of musicianship on a debut album makes it one of best in all of rock. Fun album with a lot of variety.
I have already listened to it prior but a good album is a good album no matter how many times you’ve heard it.
I like them
Fuckin hell this is stacked with classics - I had no idea they were pretty much all on the one album. Skynyrd has anyways been one of those bands I don't mind, but also don't actively listen to... I'd have said any given Skynyrd album was a 3, but this tracklist can't be denied in any way. 5/5 and then some.
Absolute classic
I love this album so much. Incredible debut album. Obviously, you have: Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Freebird, but the other four are solid as well, just overshadowed by those classics. I Ain’t the One and Poison Whiskey are perfect country rock songs. Things Goin’ On has a cool funky rhythm to it and Mississippi Kid is a fun blues song. Everything on this album is so clearly great. Obviously the instrumentation, vocals, structure, production, are all fucking sick. 5/5
What an album and even more amazingly their debut album.
Wow lots of good ones on here.
Did not liked it.
9/10 one of the most iconic rock albums of all time, and one I genuinely love and appreciate
Wow. I'd never listened to this album before, outside the of three hits. I have nothing bad to say about this album at all. It's perfect.
Awesome blossom!
Absolutely killer debut album. This can easily be a “best of” album, and I wouldn’t have noticed the difference.
A lot of some of the greatest classic classic rock songs of all time.
Honestly, a 5 for Tuesday's Gone alone. This whole album is fire, tho.
I mean what else can be said about this masterpiece. My personal top 10 favorite album all time. So many memories with these songs all throughout my life. It has become a part of me. It’s amazing what these guys were doing in that swamp and the music they produced will live forever. This is an ultimate perfect album that everyone should listen to. Easiest 5 I’ve handed out in this journey. I put top 5 on my bangers list, but I mean, the album is a BANGER. TBz 1. Free Bird 2. Simple Man 3. Tuesday’s Gone 4. I Ain’t The One 5. Poison Whiskey
Oh ya
Southern Rock at it's finest. Half of this album is all time classic tracks. Wild to think we almost didn't get Simple Man recorded at all. Anyway here's 5/5
Literally half the songs on this album are considered all time classic songs. This is not my go-to genre of music but what a great album.
What a banger
So good. I Ain’t the One, Tuesday’s Gone and Free Bird.
has the greatest song ever written
Great album
Great album. Free Bird is a masterpiece
Great
Great music
Rock & Roll! 5/5
love
Man, this album is full of all the hits from LS!
Excellent album. Holds up great over time.
Having refused to rate A-ha highly because the album was shit but it had 2 amazing songs on it, I'm going to do exactly the opposite here. I don't really care much for any of the rest, although they're fun enough. Simple Man stands out. But by god, those two songs. Fuck me. I will say it's not completely hypocritical, because these are two of the best songs ever written, really. Also, they make up about a third of the length of the album, and it's a good job.
I had heard about this album through pop culture osmosis but still never realized how many of Skynyrds' hits are on this album. Might as well be a greatest hits album tbh.
5.0
An all-timer with three of the best songs ever. Wonderful stuff.
I love the raw nature of this, human beings creating music through collaboration, not computers. Legendary guitar work and songs, a classic album forever!
They weren’t yet the “Three Guitar Army,” but my goodness the guitars soar throughout this album. Gary Rossington’s and Allen Collins’s guitar flex is strikingly great. Free Bird gets all the attention from this album, and it is a great song, but I prefer several others. Gimme Three Steps tells a tell of hitting on another guy’s girlfriend at a bar and then asking for a three step head start as a favor. I like I Ain’t The One because that guitar riff is fucking awesome, including the bass part. Simple Man is definitely my favorite song, an arpeggio filled ballad about advice from Momma. It’s so down to earth. Things Goin’ On is full is slinky coolness in the bass, piano, and guitar parts. I really need to learn more Lynyrd Skynyrd songs on guitar. Mississippi Kid is my least favorite track, and it’s still good. Even though it’s only on the extended version of the album, Mr. Banker is a phenomenal slide guitar driven blues piece. Lynyrd Skynyrd are a band I’ve listened to a decent amount over the years, but I should still give them more time in my rotation. This album is magnificent Even though it wouldn’t be my first choice, if I were given only this album to live on a deserted island, I would be content. It’s that good. The story of Lynyrd Skynyrd is amazing and heartbreaking too. Showtime made a very good documentary that is worth your time called - If I Leave Here Tomorrow: A Film About Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s available on Netflix.
Incredible Album, For me a forgotten pearl
fucking love it
You’ve heard at least one of the many hits off this album, it’s a classic regardless of how you look at it. I’m not the biggest Skynyrd fan but even I can deny this album is everything you want in classic rock. It’s got energy, sadness, happiness, story telling, and it’s just plain fun.
Fantastic album. Southern rock with multiple anthemic hits. Standouts are "Tuesday's Gone", "Gimme Three Steps", "Simple Man", and "Free Bird".
I give this album 7 key lime pies out of 5 September 18th, 2022
One of my favorite rock albums in history. This is absolutely a classic.
Amazing album. One of the best debut albums ever.
Unreal album, Free Bird is one of the best finishes to an album ever
Another situation where the album is basically a greatest hits album. And the hits are undeniable. Sure Free Bird is a bit of an overused meme at this point, but listen to them guitar solos and tell me you aren't losing your mind. Ps. Happy 600
Every song on this album is a winner! All killer and no filler.
Tremendous
I knew a guy, who shall remain nameless, who listened to this ALL THE TIME. I mean, all the time. And Dave would turn it up so that the whole damned stoop would have to listen to it. We didn't have air conditioning, so the windows and doors were always open. But then this nine minute song would come on and everybody would sing it at the top of their lungs. Is that idiotic? Yep. But it was also an exceptional album.
Dang. This is really an impressive damn album. There's a few tracks in the middle that don't do much, but they still have an interesting southern blues and rock vibe that is interesting. The rest are exceptional, Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird certainly being all time classics.
Classic.
5.0 - Classic Southern rock: “Simple Man”, “Tuesday’s Gone”, “Free Bird.” I also love deeper tracks like “Mississippi Kid.” So much soul!
I can't believe I've never listened to this album before today.
has to be the greatest southern rock album of all time
So many good songs, including. A few I’d never heard before. Enjoyed hearing the demos of some classics.
Lotta hits
I grew up in the most white bread Denver suburb imaginable, experiencing no honkytonks or whiskey bars. My teenage tastes were all 80's British Pop, plus some Charlie Parker and Bach. I now live in England. So where or where does my love of southern fried rock come from? I already had a heart on two songs from this album, neither of which was for Free Bird. I've not dipped my toe too deep into the Lynyrd Skynyrd catalog before and have already added some additional hearts. Gimme Three Steps is a perfect distillation of this specific art form. An incredibly strong debut album. Worth a listen, if you get the chance, before you die.
I really really dig it
Easy 5.
FREEEEEE BIIIRRRDDD
Southern Gods
Hard to believe this was a debut album
"Cold Cuts" is the episode of The Sopranos where Carmella Soprano and Rosalie Aprile take a girls trip to Paris. While his wife is away, Tony gets himself a blow job while driving his SUV. When he's done, his favorite radio station plays "Simple Man", which is the last song on Side 1 of this album. Nothing on The Sopranos ever happened by accident, and there was almost always a meaning behind every needle drop. No one made a blow job face quite like the great James Gandolfini, just like no television program or movie did needle drops like The Sopranos. And no band epitomized southern rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd. I think about that scene every time I hear "Simple Man", which is one of the four classic songs on this album everyone knows by heart. Those 4 songs are so ubiquitous, especially "Free Bird", the "Stairway To Heaven" of southern rock. I miss James Gandolfini. And I miss what this band could have been before that fucking plane crash.
I really want to not like this but is really a five star album. Pretty dang solid through out. I might be genetically programmed to like this music. Watched a lot people my parents’ age get stoned to this, have cookouts with this album on, play Free Bird and divorce each other and cry. Sigh. Like it or not a cultural touch stone.
My luck at the moment with this must be fanatical. Three fives in a row. While the first half is easily stronger than the second, I liked every single song on this. Didn't feel overly long or tired, and apart from Mississippi Kid and Poison Whiskey, every song felt essential. You have the classic guitar request of Free Bird (great closer btw), some quality ballads in Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man, and some fun rockers with I Ain't the One and Gimme Three Steps. Overall a very enjoyable album.
This album is incredible. Every song on it is dope. I am very familiar with this album and I don’t think it’s too much to say it’s the quintessential Skynyrd. Most of their best songs are on this. It’s sick. Highlights besides the obvious Freebird are Gimme Three Steps and Simple Man. R.I.P. Ronnie your legacy will live on through your art for generations to come
A foundation of the wave of southern rock to come in this decade. Didn’t realize there were so many hits on their first album.
A beautiful example of southern rock. Lynyrd Skynyrd has an incredibly focused musical identity as a band and I really like their no-frills approach to rock and roll. The songs are authentic, the band is strong, and the music just feels good. (Note these guys were actually progressives and the the band's image got distorted by those who survived the infamous plane crash). Finally, FREEEEEBIRRRRDDDD!!!! As much as it has become a joke to yell at encores, this song and the guitar solos at the end are just phenomenal with each measure elevating the guitar parts further into the stratosphere.
What an album! An absolute masterpiece. Banger after banger with guitar mixes in every song.
Very good album.
Absolute knockout album from start to finish. The first four tracks are all instant classics, and while the second half slows down slightly, it finishes right up at that high again with Free Bird.
Fantastic!
Growing up in the South, I heard this so much that I was sick of it. Only recently could I appreciate this again.
Such a great album. True classic
Astonished by how much I enjoyed this, it was never not interesting. Still not sure if they're racist though.
Great album. 5 stars
This album is so fucking good. And it's not JUST because of Free Bird (an undeniably excellent track), but because the whole album is full of shredding Southern rock. This album is the American South's Dark Side of the Moon. No skips, it really is that good. Like a truly good Southern album it's a rambling journey of great storytelling.
You know, I don't support the use of the Confederate Flag, but this album is amazing. That's all I have to say.
I never really listened to Skynyrd though I liked songs here and there. A few of those songs are on here. This album was an education. As I listened to the opener I Ain't the One, I thought "Yep, there's the good guitarwork they're known for. Oh, and a second harmonized guitar. Very nice. Wait what? A third lead guitar. Holy shit." I did not know about the Three Guitar Army, until I read up on who all the musicians were. So that was already changing my opinion in a good way. Gimme Three Steps is probably my favorite track of theirs - no, it's not overly complicated but the combination of thumping beats and cheeky lyrics/vocals ("I said Excuuuse me") always hooked me. As much as Freebird and Simple Man get played a lot, they are very good. I'm not going to go ga-ga over either like some, but the lyrics and the sad melody tug at you just enough (and of course there are good guitar licks). Still, I prefer the sweeping beauty of Tuesday's Gone. This album is at least a 4 but if I gave the Black Crowes' southern rock debut a 5 I gotta give Skynyrd's southern rock debut the same.
Free Bird! Ok, now that that's out of the way... Side 1 is PERFECT. Four amazing songs in a row. Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, and Simple Man are all stone-cold classics. I didn't know "I Ain't the One" but it absolutely rocks. Love the guitar solo in the middle. The first three songs on Side 2 are not nearly as perfect. All of them are good (my favorite of the three is Poison Whiskey), but it's not at the level of the four songs on Side 1. BUT, then we have Free Bird, which really is one of the greatest rock songs ever (with one of the best guitar solos (plural) ever), so Side 2 averages out to amazing anyway. Between a perfect Side 1 and an amazing Side 2 (thanks to Free Bird), this album is a clear 5.
Finest guitar-driven southern rock. The only song I new so far was the fantastic Free Bird, but the entire album is just highest quality rock.
-"I Ain't The One" has cool reversed cymbals, and a great bass to go along with all the guitar jamming -I like "Tuesday's Gone" in the same way I like most ballads, which is that it's fine. -"Gimme Three Steps" is incredibly catchy and also has great bass backing up the shredding guitar -"Simple Man" is very anthemic. It's relatively simple riffs just ring out with power -That's a big old honkin' bass riff at the start of "Things Goin' On." I also really like the ragtime-esque piano. -"Mississippi Kid" is probably my least favorite on the album. Just kinda mellow. -"Poison Whiskey is a solid groove of a song, with all the bits have been cited for the previous songs, ie solid guitar riffs, great bass and drums, and nice piano jams to go along with it -"Free Bird" is obviously an absolutely epic song. The song starts mellow and increases in intensity at a gradual, but not snail-like pace, and then the guitar solo/band jam totally rips. I think the solo is hugely aided by the rest of the band playing along and supporting, making the whole solo more epic than if it were left as pure guitar. I especially love the drum accents in between guitar riffs.
Ronnie Van Zant is my spirit animal. Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Free Bird and Simple Man are must listens. The other 4 songs grow on you with each listen. Can't believe producer, Al Kooper wanted to leave Simple Man off of the album.
I was very surprised at what a solid record this one.
An absolute classic.
Lean and mean. Southern rock that really rocks. It's been probably 10 years or more since I've played this album all the way through. I forgot just how good it is. I almost went for a 4 but I mean, come on. An album this great is a rare thing. Several of these songs get heavy rotation on classic rock radio, to the point where you don't really want to hear them. But you really need to listen to these songs together as an album to appreciate how Lynyrd Skynyrd really was on to something special musically. Nobody sounded quite like this when they came out. And there have been so many imitators to this sound over the years. It all falls flat when compared to the original. Skynyrd pulls on a lot of musical threads that were around in the early seventies - blues, rock, country. They take those threads and turn them into something distinctively theirs. It's a heavier and bluesier than a lot of their contemporaries, but also with a soulfulness and heart that's unexpected. Only the Stones and the Allmans were able to navigate such varied waters so effortlessly. These are all strong tracks, and a lot of fun to listen to. Fave Songs: Gimme Three Steps, I Ain't the One, Simple Man, Things Goin' On, Mississippi Kid, Poison Whiskey
authentic rock
awesome
okay
Really good. Somehow never heard this before. Makes me want to retroactively rate a couple of 4s I gave into 3s.
Fantastic album. Front to back amazing blues rock. Great vibes. Have heard all the singles and the other songs are just as good
Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man - what's not to like. And then FREE BIRD!!!!!
Enjoyed this one!
I Ain't The One has a surprising intro and sound. The rest of the album is classic. Amazing debut.
I've never heard a Lynyrd Skynyrd album all the way through. So glad that has changed. This is a great album, it jus keeps rocking and rambling. There's not a bad track here.
The southern rock magnum opus. And it’s a debut album! Tuesday’s Gone, Free Bird, and Simple Man existing together on the same album blows my mind. I fucking love it.
A stone cold classic of Southern Rock. You don't have to have a redneck to be able to rock out to these songs. There's a mix of FM classics, blues, riffs and honky tonk. Get tuning that air guitar. Best Tracks: Simple Man; Things Goin' On; Free Bird
There are a few reasons I may not have given Lynyrd Skynyrd much of a chance before, but I really did love all the music on this album. I love the rock/folk/blues/country feel of it. Mandolins and funky keyboards and the first time I was compelled during this project to air guitar. I really didn't expect to gush about this album, but I have to say there wasn't a song I didn't enjoy, as well as the unexpected variety of sounds going from song to song. I think seeing "Free Bird" performed live in concert must truly have been the most amazing experience, as the legends say. I like to imagine that while I listen. (I've complained about long songs before, but I've listened to this one four times today. It doesn't feel like nine minutes!)
This debut album from Lynyrd Skynyrd packs in four songs I was familiar with and already liked - “Tuesday’s Gone,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Simple Man” and “Free Bird”. I hadn’t listened to these in a while, but they sound as great as ever. As for the rest of the album: The opening track “I Ain’t The One” sees the singer abandoning the mother of his child using a lot of questionable terms of… endearment? Maybe not something one might write today. The incredibly jaunty but lyrically pointed “Things Goin’ On” takes on the subject of poverty and the environment and is very relevant still today. The song is great. Then the singer in “Mississippi Kid” heads to Alabama with his gun to fetch his woman and kill anyone who might cause him trouble. Not the most positive view of Mississippi I guess. And my least favorite song. “Poison Whiskey” is some pretty great 70s music, strong on guitars and organs. Loved this song about the perils of rotgut whiskey. This album version of “Free Bird” has an organ opening that I think is often not heard on the radio cuts. Man this song is incredible. It could earn this album a 5 on its own, but fortunately it doesn’t have to. An incredible debut from an incredible band.
Just some extremely solid, country-fried rock and roll. No real misses on this record. "Simple Man" is one of the best ballads ever written, and despite the pseudo-meme status of "Free Bird", it still kicks so much ass. Favorite tracks: "Simple Man", "Free Bird", "I Ain't the One"
The only thing wrong with this album is that they got their own phonetic spelling wrong. Best track: Tuesday's Gone
jo de már unom
9/10. Monster Album
Classic country rock! Best around for sure
Corr, these guys have learned their scales. Fantastic album Freebird will never not fill me with nostalgia for GTA San Andreas.
And absolute classic and probably their best album.
Unbelievably good, one of the best guitar albums
Pretty great.
album full of classic rock hits
Classic rock is classic, but Free Bird alone is worth 10 stars.
Aside from the 9 minute epic, there’s still a ton of solid stuff on this album, it’s probably their album with their most well known stuff on it.
Great classic rock n roll songs very funny great reefs perfect for go to work pegajoso
I had never heard this album all the way through but, like everyone I guess, I know all the hits and they're all on this album. The songs I hadn't heard still felt familiar. Great album
Had never heard this album all the way through. Then hearing all the classics as well as the amazing songs in between, this is absolutely a top classic of all time that everyone should hear.
Bra skit!
classic
Awesome. One of the best albums ever.
Awesome
Loved this! Just some rock n roll music. Great stuff.
Songs; Free Bird, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Poison Whiskey
What needs to be said about Skynyrd.
I'm not necessarily the biggest LS fan in the world, but this is the best album with the most iconic songs I have listened to so far.
PERKELE!!!
Kyllä nää kundit vaan osas musaa tehdä. Ehdottomasti timanttia ja tähtikaartia.
Southern rock usually isn’t the first genre I reach for, but *Pronounced ’Lĕh-’nérd ’Skin-’nérd* feels like a pretty great gateway into it. The obvious standouts are “Simple Man” and, of course, “Free Bird,” two haunting and powerful tracks with guitar work that completely blows me away. The rest of the album leans further into the band’s Southern roots, with plenty of slide guitar, lively piano, and honky-tonk flavor. Those songs may not reach the same heights as the classics, but they’re still enjoyable and give the album plenty of personality. Overall, this was a solid listen, and I can definitely see myself coming back for the big tracks.
Love me some good guitar riffs <3
Stereotypical macho white Southern rock, yes. And their lyrics are often cringe. But this album is also pretty great. Their bluesy rock is so crunchy and it just rocks. “Simple Man” is hard to fault and “Gimme Three Steps” is a gem of a story song. “Free Bird” can be annoying, but only because it is emblazoned in our psyches. There’s a reason for its ubiquity.
4 classics, 4 stars
Normally I’m not a fan of good ol’ boy music but this album slaps. “Simple Man” has been a favorite for a long time, and “Freebird” belongs in the annals of rock and roll history.
It's hard not to love this. I don't want to, I'm certainly not a fan of the politics, but the music is too good.
Pleasantly surprised by this one.
Favorite Track: Simple Man
Free bird makes this an auto 4
It's undeniably a classic for Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird alone, but I really enjoyed this more than expected. They perfected the Southern Rock sound and I think this has their best and most timeless work. Top Songs: Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird
Fav songs: i ain't the one, tuesday's gone, free bird
Underrated band
My dad played this one a lot growing up, but this was my first listen with my full attention on it and I enjoyed it as I expected. Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Free Bird are very easily classic rock songs that alone propel this record into an incredible debut. Insane solo on Free bird and the absolutely beautiful lyrics of Simple Man are definitely the highlights for me. The other track on here though are still great songs like Things Goin' On. Ronnie's southern accent really adds to the vocal delivery here and it alongside the guitar give Lynyrd Skynyrd their signature sound. Just a very cohesive album that gets right to the punch and is holds that energy throughout. Another great rock band that found their sound early and went on to refine it further.
hell yeah
Better than I was expecting, it felt ahead of its time. Will give this another spin for sure.
Free Bird is obviously a 5/5, but I feel like the rest of the album is more of a 4/5 than a straight 5/5. A great listen anyhow.
Good songs very groovy album. Opens great with "I ain't the one". Second song "Tuesday's gone is super recognizable. Then the upbeat classic give me three steps is next, super catchy. This album is full of heavy hitters.
A bunch of stone cold classics to help you get over the fact that these guys fans suck 8/10
Surprised I knew so many songs on the album before listening. Iconic. Free Bird
Southern fried swamp rock and blues! Pretty impressive debut. I'd never heard "Simple Man" but it was a standout for me. It's become a bit of a cliché, but "Free Bird" is still an absolute killer album closer.
Great vibes! Wasn't sure at the start, but recognised a few on there! Ends with Free Bird of course. Great summer vibey album.
8 / 10
Good album!
Pronounced GREAT RECORD
I like it very much; Freebird may be a joke today but obviously for a reason; it's a good song. I'm torn between 4 and 5, but as I reserve 5 stars for my all time greats this is a very good 4.
This is a pretty important one for me. I guess. My Danpa (my grandfather whose name is Danny, who we collectively refer to with the affectionate title “Danpa”)’s favorite song of all time is “Simple Man,” and I have surprisingly deep roots in the south. Now, I also know what this band represents to many people, that being oppression. And, in more humorous cases, incest. And while I’m reluctant to put that aside for the sake of enjoyment, especially because of their open use of the confederate flag, I think it’s fair to at least factor SOME level of general base-level enjoyment in. Because it’s not like this is an awful album, and it’s certainly not like it openly advocates for any kind of oppression, rather it stands as part of oppression’s shadow. It’s because of this that songs such as “Things Goin’ On” and “Mississippi Kid” ring so hollow even while the rest of the album hits hard. Opener “I Ain’t The One” is fantastic, “Simple Man” is obviously incredible and has an aforementioned level of sentimentality for me, “Poison Whiskey” is real cool, and “Free Bird” is a clear and obvious landmark of good music. It’s the perfect closer that this pretty good album does not deserve. And then… that’s it. It’s pretty awesome. I like the album. 8.2/10
This was a very relaxing rock album.
I have nothing insightful to say about Lynyrd Skynyrd. But then, neither do they.
Plays like a greatest hits.
Really good, all culminates into freeee biiiirrrrrdddd
Pure classic
