Reviews (page 3 of 13)
From my era, but never listened to them. I love the energy and confidence of their sound.
for free bird alone this album deserves 5 stars
Just perfect
9/10.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is probably one of the first bands I was introduced to via Guitar Hero II, rocking out to a cover of "Free Bird" on a plastic guitar controller. It was a cool time as a young teen getting into rock music, and as such, there's a certain nostalgia with checking out the bands I was exposed to early on. With revisiting Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut in mind, does it still hold up all these years later? The answer to that question is a resounding yes. (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) represented the craftsmanship and standards the band held during their original run with vocalist and lyricist Ronnie Van Zant. His words delivered in that Southern drawl were observations from hard lessons learned in life. The relationship drama of "I Ain't the One" and "Gimme Three Steps", the perils of alcoholism on "Poison Whiskey", living in poverty while the American elite continue to profit on "Things Goin' On". These stories still feel resonant today in how they were told over the twin guitar riffing of Allen Collins and Gary Rossington, the tight rhythm section of Ed King and Bob Burns, and the complementing keyboard flair of Billy Powell. There are three songs in particular on this album that I want to highlight. Near the beginning is the seven-minute ballad "Tuesday's Gone", using the allegory of riding off a train away from a former love to speak about the band's changed trajectory after signing to MCA Records, sold with eloquence as the orchestral strings kick in. Ending side one is "Simple Man", the centerpiece of the record, about a mother passing valuable wisdom to her child, inspired by the passing of Ronnie's grandmother. It's a simple three-chord progression song, but man, does the writing and slow-burn soloing not elevate it to great heights. Finally, as I've alluded to earlier, this album ends with "Free Bird", a nine-minute ode to the desire for freedom that comes in many forms, culminating in an extended jam session with the band where Gary and Allen trade solos and a sense of euphoria rushes over me each time. I know that Lynyrd Skynyrd tends to get a bad rap with the outside associations of this band to the Southern United States' misplaced affection for the long-dead confederacy and backwards-looking ideals, and the band's rebirth in the 90s with Ronnie's younger brother Johnny did nothing to ameliorate that. But the original Ronnie Van Zant run is timeless in its simple comfort, and their debut album exemplifies that best.
Ye good
Any album that ends with Free Bird cannot conceivably be rated fewer than five stars.
It rocks.
As previously reviewed last month, still rings true after listening again: ““Tuesday’s Gone”, “Free Bird”, “Gimme Three Steps” and “Simple Man”. 4 pure classic tracks. Loved “Mr Banker”. No brainer… 5!”
Fantastic album with great hits. No wonder they’re considered one of the best.
great album - listen again for sure
The holy grail of southern rock. End of discussion.
Easiest 5-star since Rumours
Ok this album rules . Surprising highlights included "things goin' on" and "I ain't the one". Goddamn good time.
A definitive classic
Favorite Track: Simple Man
Solid, lots of great songs. Didn't realize they were all on one album
Great album some very strong songs!
Southern rock at its finest
What was that noise at the end of Mississippi Kid? There are few moments that feel outworldly like the outro to Freebird, fuck it 5/5
9.5/10 Idk if it’s because I am in Kentucky or if this album is really that good, but this hit all the right spots today. Obviously skynyrd has had appeal across genres, generations, and cultures but this album really synthesized what they did best. Favorite song: Tuesday’s Gone/Free Bird
Honestly I needed this album in my life today. Some really great songs especially Tuesdays Gone, Simple Man and Freebird.
From the finer side of days gone by
This album is incredible. One of the best pieces of music in my opinion. Glad to be close to a lot of it in Florida.
FREEEEEEEBIRDDDDDDD
easy 5. Felt like I was listening to this with my Dad at some points sitting in front of his turntable. I didnt realize how many hits came off this one. Tuesdays Gone, Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps, Free Bird. Man, just enjoyment start to finish. A masterwork in rock.
Totally surprised at how much I loved this album. I knew a few of the songs but even loved the ones I wasn’t familiar with. “Tuesdays Gone” was the standout. And imagine hearing “Free Bird” for the first time when this album dropped?!? Fucking epic
Enjoyed this album quite a bit more than I expected to. Added some tracks to my Liked Songs but there were no skips.
Good. Was very surprised on the number of songs I was jamming out to. I don't know if I knew Free Bird was on this album before this and if I had listened to it before but shit was BANGIN
just a very solid album and an amazing debut for a band. free bird is legendary and always a bop to listen to
It really isn't fair to all the other albums out there. Three of Skynyrd's best songs all on one album! I might ask the kids to play Freebird at my funeral! Heck yeah ...
Loved this! Tuesday's Gone is one of my favorite Skynyrd songs, but then you also have Free Bird, Simple Man and Gimme Three Steps? So good.
Awesome!
Dad rock as it should be. Would definitely listen again.
Ronnie Van Zant sounds like a veteran bluesman but with his own unique style, a style that often sounds broken beyond repair & gloriously hopeful often in the same song. Just brilliant stuff. One of the best albums from the early 1970s (1973 to be exact) and maybe the best debut album of 1973 certainly greater than the debuts by such powerhouses as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Bryan Ferry and even Queen. No rock N roll library can be called complete without it at least not with a straight face. This is America reminding the world that we invented rock N roll and more importantly reminding ourselves that no one rocks harder and truer than a southern man raised on boiled peanuts, king cake, country music & old 78 rpm blues records. To call it essential seems like some grand underestimate of all the fire n skill that one finds on an album that is just over 43 minutes long.
Forgot how good Lynyrd Skynyrd is. This album kicks ass.
#532. Only eight songs, and four of them are inescapably huge hits. I don't see any other option than to give it the highest rating. 5/5: nothing wrong here
Such a monumental album. I don't even really care for southern rock a ton normally, but I have to make an exception here. My favorite here that isn't Free Bird is Tuesday's Gone. Simple Man is also so good. The base guitar goes crazy throughout and the lead guitar takes off specifically in the closer. Some ok songs on the back end, but maybe I was just too excited for Free Bird.
Country rock. Fantastic album. Some rock classics, some moving ballads, this is an exceptional album. Also it has Free Bird.
One and only Ronnie Van Zant. One of the best debut albums for me.
I think this is 5 Star territory. Or 4.5 rounded up. An incredible debut album, cementing themselves as rock legends. The Southern Rock genre would grow stale on me later in life, but having hits like Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man I think help diversify themselves as more than just hillbillies with guitars, they can also create emotional, timeless ballads. Bonus points for Free Bird.
Brilliant album from start to finish.what a way to end with the amazing free bird.rumour has it that the guitar solo is still going on
So many classics. Even the deep cuts are bad ass.
I was not expecting that album to be that good.
5 - I grew up on classic rock. My parents introduced me at a young age with their extensive vinyl collected, which included this album. Classic Southern Rock at its finest.
“Tuesday’s Gone”, “Free Bird”, “Gimme Three Steps” and “Simple Man”. 4 pure classic tracks. Loved “Mr Banker”. No brainer… 5!
10 minutes in, I thought "woah, Lynyrd Skynrd has a song on the Happy Gilmore soundtrack! And it's actually really good!" By the end of my second listen through, I realized there is a lot of depth to this album. I love the southern spin and the intentionality of this album. A lot of these classic rock albums we've been listening to sound more carefree and effortless, like it was recorded off the cuff. But this sounds like a well curated final product which is really refreshing. I might have actually dropped the kings of leon album down another star had i listened to this first because this is a guiding star of southern rock. The only pause i have from giving 5/5 is the stupid southern toxic machismo of Mississippi kid, but ill still do it
I’m amazed the global rating is as low as it is. Multiple smash hits with hundreds of millions of plays on Spotify, widespread recognition, mastery of their instruments… this album was an amazing debut and still sounds great today. I enjoyed every minute. 4.5/5 I could have done without some of the demo tracks added, even though they were interesting to hear for the differences and the working progress
8.80
Undeniable five stars, some legendary songs here
Great album
One of the tightest debut albums of all time.
This album is already long-time favourite of mine, so of course it's getting five stars.
What a debut! Jam after jam after jam.
A country classic synonymous with the deep south and hooliganism 8/10
Great sound, classic tracks.
Who knew that I'd like this so much but I did. Great album, will be back!
yea i fuck wid dis heavy. yea.
Every musician is a master of their instrument, every note is full of soul and necessary to the song. Tunes are catchy and inventive, with a nice variety of tempos and feels. Just a perfect album, front to back.
I mean it's Skynyrd's debut
I mean, it's a 5/5 for me.
Great album. Free Bird is legendary.
This is probably the best debut by a Southern Rock band of all time. Are you kidding me? 3 of the 8 songs on this album are on every compilation of Rock n' Roll anthems! Especially Free Bird. This song still makes me play air guitar for 4 minutes straight, even though I know how to play a real guitar. What a great album! I've been listening to this album since I was a teenager and I'll definitely listen to it forever! 5 stars, obviously!
(Pronounced 'fuck-ing 'awe-some). Every song on this album is important in its own way(even "Poison Whiskey, the only song on the album I don't like). Whether it's bringing you a wave of nostalgia for "Happy Gilmore" with "Tuesday's Gone", to the catchy ballad of "Gimmie Three Steps", to the somber "Simple Man", to classic blues with "Mississippi Kid", to the anti-drug ballad of "Poison Whiskey", to one of the most iconic songs of all time("Free Bird"), this song has a little bit for everyone, and is arguably the greatest debut album in the history of music. Favorite Song: "Tuesday's Gone".
Actually great
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. It sounds a little cheesy in places now but it's damn good stuff. Although it's a bit over played and talked about, Free Bird is an incredible song and that guitar solo could entertain me for the rest of my days, I bloody love it
Hell yeah
Overrated, overplayed, and at this point just about downright annoying; but I'd be a fool to say Lynyrd Skynyrd wasn't one of the best bands in the world and deserves every bit of their legendary status. Fact is, I don't actually need a reminder of any of the songs on this album because they're all so deeply engrained in my brain. Whether or not I like that, it says a lot about this band. When you're the band that's responsible for the song that someone requests EVERY OTHER BAND to play at live shows, you gotta be doing something right.
Simply one of the best. Every song brings a strong sense of nostalgia. And that is without ever having grown up during this time. Listening to this album takes you back to your adolescence, regardless of what decade that happens to be for you. The sensation of "a time when life was more simple" pours through the headphones and into the soul. One can close their eyes and almost physically get to the smells, tastes, and feelings of their teenage years. This is a timeless piece of nostalgia and art.
Great album. It was better than i remembered.
Great band, and pretty much all their best songs are on this album
I like this way more than I thought I would, but I may just be a Simple Man
HELLA GOOD
My intro into southern rock. Good sound and fun songs.
Undeniable classic.
Classic and essential listening.
Favourite tracks: Tuesday's gone; simple man; free bird; gimme three steps; I ain't the one
A Rock n Roll classic!! The first four songs are some of the best southern rock songs every produced "I Ain't the One", "Tuesday's Gone", "Gimme Three Steps"and "Simple Man"; then hhey hit it out of the ballpark with, "Free BIrd", their eighth and last track.
yep. played out classics but still classics. hard to fault
• 5/5 - The prototypical Southern Rock/Blues album • makes you want a cold beer on a hot night
loooooord I can't chaaaange
Fantastic front to back
A debut album with: "Gimme Three Steps", "Simple Man", "Tuesday's Gone", and "Free Bird"? That's some kind of start! Just good music! Puts ya in a good mood.
Simpleeeeeeeeeeeeeee Kind of man
This is rock!! Turn it up, man! 5/5
Excellent.
Freezer biiiird yeaaaahhhaahahah
I've been waiting to add this to my profile. Country boys say hoooo
Notes written during listening : "Sample Man - one word, 6 letters : INSANE tuesday gone - guitar solo is unbelievable !!!! Gimme three steps - incredible Things goin' on - kinda like the piano part ! Looks like great ball of fire from Jerry LL" Awesome album from a legendary group ! Quite hard to do better after that I think !
Very good
Most bands don’t have the courage to do a 7 1/2 minute rock song in 6/8… let alone absolutely crush it. Instant 5 from me, also helps that I already love half the songs on the album
One classic after another, many of these songs were overplayed on AOR radio when I was younger but still great tunes. Kind of forget that this was a debut record and it also essentially started the southern rock genre
First of all, I disagree with how the bands name should be pronounced. Ok now on to the album…. I’m not sure there is an Album that has more big hits on it than this one. Which is odd since by default, you should say this is the greatest album of all time. Which it’s not, to me at least. I don’t have a reason why. How it makes me feel I guess. There is nothing wrong with this album as long as you accept the fact that music in this day and age sounds completely different than back then. This is pure southern classic rock. Crisp, soul felt and foot tapping. Fans of almost every genre of music can appreciate this album. If you hate it, it’s based on musical preference. There can’t possibly be any other reason. The vocals are good and don’t sound out of key or an annoying tone. The band is solid with not one instrument taking too much control over the others. The pace of the album flutters in the mid range high and low zones where it’s not too heavy and not too soft, at any point. Enjoy this damn it! Because of Free Bird, the ending to the movie “The Devils Rejects” is the best ending ever in a movie. Choice cut: Free Bird
all the classic skynyrd in one album.
Growing up half hillbilly this was part of the soundtrack to my youth. This album is littered with some of the absolute classics of the southern rock genre.
Great album to listen all the way through - it's been quite some time - and full of classics. Simple Man always one of my favs. They codified Southern Rock and produced a hell of a lot in a few short years before that plane crash.
Going into this, I was like "Oh, it's the album Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, and Free Bird are on - I don't know if I've ever listened to this as an album, so let's see if the rest of the tracks live up to that incredibly high standard." And then I proceeded to go "Ohhhh, it's *this* one!" to basically every other track. Suffice to say, this is all bangers, and while the rest of the album can't live up to Free Bird, I think when the question is "How many genre-defining masterpieces are on this album," most bands will absolutely settle for "One." Seriously, the only negative things I can say about this record are that the honky-tonk piano in Things Goin' On gives me extremely specific flashbacks to Dr Drago's Madcap Chase (you're welcome, handful of other people who grew up on that), and that Guns 'N' Roses listened to Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird, thought "Yeah, we could do that," and that's how we ended up with November Rain.
Fantastic album with a ton of classics.
Classic. Love it!
All the jams. While I fully understood that Freebird is an epic song, listening to it in this context really solidified that.
Trite as it is to say, but you don’t have classic rock without Skynyrd.
I mean it’s got free bird on it
Free Bird
Classic
Bang on
I’m not much of a country rock fan, but man, when it hits, it hits! Not a soft moment on here. Some of these songs have been played so often, and even still, just keeps a rockin.
All time greatest album
it's good, very nice production, classic
It goes from a solid 4/5 to Free Bird bringing it home to an undeniable 5/5. Anthem after anthem, from songs about classism to songs about cocaine. This is the southern rock classic
Never heard this before, though I grew up groaning over Free Bird. Really enjoyed it--what an incredible first album. Tuesday's Gone is new favorite song, and it was nice to hear Simple Man again.
Really this whole album is fantastic. I loved it as a kid. I love it now
Fantastyczne. Simple man bardzo mi się podoba, a tekst trafia prosto w moją duszę. Free bird i I aint the one też znakomite, szczególnie free bird. Dobre teksty i jeszcze lepsze instrumnety 5/5
A remarkable blues/country rock album. Simple Man and the guitar solo outro of Free Bird are particular highlights for me. Excellent in every way.
Freeebiird! I really enjoyed listening to this. Awesome.
Get that air guitar out and go rocking. With a beautiful Tuesday's Gone (covered by Metallica) and Freebird, this album has really grown on me during the weekend. Played it on vinyl, this is really a lot of fun. All banger, all mash!
Favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd album so far. Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird. Everything been on my playlists for long time already.
Southern Rock vom Feinsten! Klassiker!
Classic rock legends, and this is one of their best! 8 songs and 5 made it on the radio with 4 being rock radio staples to this day. Out of the chute with "I Ain't The One", then rolling into the 7 minute ballad "Tuesday's Gone", and on to my favorite Skynyrd tune, "Gimme Three Steps", followed by the revered "Simple Man", which has been covered by everyone and their mother too! The only dud is "Mississippi Kid". They wrap this album up with what's possibly the biggest classic rock song of all time in "Free Bird", yeah you can yell it, and you have a bonafide Top 1001 album that had hits, top notch musicianship, gritty vocals, was influential and still stands up 50 yrs later!
As a teenager I refused to like this band. I was into heavy metal and drooling over Van Halen, Ozzy, Zepplin, Floyd and other bigger harder bands. A girl friend of mine loved this album, she used to tell me you will love it. I was being an ass because it was "country". Little did I know this album would be in my top 200 albums for the rest of my life. The album is perfect 10 songs all around the 5 minute mark, ordered perfectly by the producer, the smooth rock vibe mixed perfectly with the country aspect makes it something not many had pulled off before them. This is an absolute masterpiece even if dislike this type of rock.
A classic album and a one of their best. It's loaded with awesome songs front to back.
So many great classics! I had never realized they came from their first album.
All time great rock album. Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Freebird. Legendary.
# Album Name: Pronounced 'Leh-'Nérd 'Skin-'Nérd # Artist: Leonard Skynyrd # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: Tuesdays gone. What a song. Love the guitar, vocals in this one. and THAT piano solo. Shit man. Fantastic. Gimme three steps - very catchy. Love the guitar work on this one. Some great licks and solos. For some reason, some of the vocals remind me of the theme tune to only fools and horses. no idea why. Awww simple man. What a tune!!! The guitar riff again. Absolutely top notch. The vocals on the chorus is so powerful. fucking ace solo on this bad boy. The piano in things going on makes me think of the scenes of movies in the deep south where people walk into the bar and theres a honky tonk band banging out tunes on a piano. Sounds very cowboy to me. Quite catchy, i like it. Decent tune. Although the quality of the album dipped here from the very high standard set in the previous songs. This continues until free bird kicks in. What a finale to the album. Overall a very good album for me. I'd give it a low 5 # Top Tunes: Tuesdays gone / Gimme three steps / simple man / Free bird # Would I listen to it again? Definitely.
Excelent
Excellrnt
It’s just really good blues rock. Everything good about ZZtop or Kings of Leon, even The Stones or LedZep. I’m not normally a fan of Country/Blues but these lads have nailed it.
No private session used for Spotify. "Free Bird" is a meme at this point it's under the category of songs I never need to hear again, but "Tuesday's Gone" and "Simple Man" are far from that category. Next time you at a concert and you think you are hilarious by shouting out "Free Bird" try either of those two other underplayed classics. Back to the review, southern rock personified. Classic. Genre Defining.
Some of the best southern rock of all time. Lots of classics on this album by a band that could shred with soul. It's worth talking about the fact that "Sweet Home Alabama" is a jam, but has it's controversies about whether its about racist Southern pride or just a retort to Neil Young to point out that all southerners aren't racists (see https://www.npr.org/2018/12/17/676863591/sweet-home-alabama-lynyrd-skynyrd-southern-discomfort-american-anthem). On a purely musical level, this album is a banger though.
I know the hits, but never really did a deep dive into a full album. I expected to like a few tracks, but this is a BANGER front to back. Hard for me to throw around the term "perfect album" but this might just be that! "Lynyrd Skynyrd Smokes"
Pretty darned great.
Fantastic album. Somehow only 7 songs and 4 of them are bonafide classics and essential songs. Simple Man is personally one of my favorite songs of all time. Free Bird might be the best closer of any album
Such a great album! This got a lot of rotation back in the day when I lived in a student house. The first side is killer, but the second side does dip a little in quality. However, side B redeems itself with Freebird and so this is an easy 5 stars from me.
An album that is graced with classic hits, the most universally known is probably Freebird. I liked this album, very American both lyrically and musically. I would put it in the genre of country rock rather than hard rock, certainly where this album is concerned. A classic through and through.
I really liked this album!
This sounds like having the boys over for a cooler full of Bud Heavies on the deck while the wife is out of town
FreeBird!
Skynyrd likely isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and it could be argued that Second Helping is a better overall record, but the idea of giving an album that contains Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and (obviously) Free Bird anything less than 5 stars is lunacy. One of the most misunderstood bands of all time, Skynyrd ushered in southern rock with cerebral, thoughtful lyrics and a bruising musicality that is often obscured by the rebel flags that were often seen at their shows. It was a band filled to the brim with talent, and their first two records are especially brilliant. Hard living and the tragic plane crash (my dad happened to be at their last concert before the crash took the lives of several members) robbed the world of sustained greatness, but for a brief moment this was one of the best musical acts in America.
This album is 5 star good before it even gets to Free Bird. 5 stars or A+ for me.
No le voy a poner menos de 5 estrellas al disco que tiene Free Bird. Así son las cosas.
Classic
I’m a simple man
Love this album. Since there is no other time to talk about Free Bird, I have to rant about how spectacular that song is 😂. I hear Free Bird today only in an ironic context, so to have an opportunity to take it seriously again was refreshing. The first 4mins 20 seconds is obviously cool and bluesy. The melody (bwwwwuahhh, wahhhhh wyyaaa, wyyyahhh, wyabb) makes you feel like a free bird coasting in the air and is really catchy. Next, and you were teased with this earlier, it feels like youre about to leave and be the “free bird”, but unlike the easy and melancholic coast you expected, this is an cannon blast to outer fucking space that honestly does not drag on for the next 4 minutes and only gets more entertaining as it goes on. Around 7mins 30, the shuffling drum beat gives me goosebumps as I picture Jenny from Forrest Gump about to SEND IT off a building in high heels while high as balls on heroin and cocaine. The energy is fantastic after 100s of times through this song. Out of back of the mix around 8mins, the bass guitar finally cuts through the chaos to claim the official peak of this roller coaster. Somehow, they fucking land that eagle without it feeling rigid and fade it out (my only actual complaint is that they didnt decide to come to a final hit) Free Bird… holy shit
Side A is flawless - and a great summer album.
Damn so many hits. The non-hits are pretty good too but the hits are fucking amazing.
Didn’t expect to love this but I did
Lynyrd Skynyrd may be the definitive Southern-rock band. They toured for years before releasing this debut album, "Pronounced 'Leh-'Nerd..." It includes the song that might be their "one-hit" - Free Bird - if the band hadn't continued to make hit songs. "Pronounced..." also includes "Gimme Three Steps" and "Tuesday's Gone," great examples of the country-rock storytelling in the band's music. The songs are supported by the three-guitar line-up, which gives the song a depth and complexity that added to their appeal.
Seminal classic rock.
Absolutely fantastic album top to bottom.
One of my all time favorites!
Not everyday you come across an album teaching you how to say the band's name, but maybe it needs to become a more common practice. Absolute and complete delight this one. Not a wasted moment from 'I Ain't The One' all the way to the greatest guitar solo ever recorded. The trio of 'Things Goin' On', 'Mississippi Kid' and 'Poison Whiskey' is quite underrated for me, even if it's hard for them to compete with the amazingness of the other tracks.
Same!
I think this record is fantastic. Freebird is obviously both a cliché and the crown jewel at the same time, and makes this one worthy of a listen just on it's own (try as I might the solo sections really do draw you in and I can't help bopping my head and enjoying myself despite whatever level of objectivity I'm trying to bring to the listen -> it must simply be a great recording!) but there is plenty to love on this album. Tuesday's Gone always feels a tiny bit out of place to me -> I think of it as 'belonging to' the Dazed And Confused soundtrack, like it was made for that movie only or something. But it is a truly special track and I love every listen. Simple Man is a weird one for me -> some listening I feel like "oh don't give me this 'persecuted southern man' crap again" and then the next minute I'm welling up and I'm totally sucked into the song. Again I think I've come to the conclusion it's just a great track.
A classic from the originators of Southern Boogie!
THE Southern rock album
Hard to find a boring moment on this one!
5 out of 5. A quintessential classic rock album that while didn't quite stick out was solid all around.
Southern rock at its peak Every track still sounds really fresh and goes hard, absolute rock classic
Freebird gives this record 3 stars right off the bat. Classic rock isn’t my thing but I have no choice but to give it a 5. The album name alone is worth an individual star
Freebird!!!!!!
Love it all, simple man is an al time favorite, free bird speaks for itself, tuesdays gone, I could list every song on the album. Guitar ranges from country bumping to epic, I love it all
Rock & roll de la vieja escuela. Vinilo.
Southern rock. Beautiful, perfect album. Every song is memorable, every moment is amazing. Not a single thing I would change. 5/5
Not only does this album have so many amazing tracks, it’s just also beautifully produced and cut together. Amazing two intro tracks, fun middle, and of course THE closer. Fantastic album by a fantastic band. Unreal album that sits among the titans of debuts.
Love multiple songs. Some others I could take or leave.
Fire!!!!!!
Classic album! Best guitar music. Love how the whole band was in sync and were extremely talented.
I mean, there's no denying this is one of the greatest rock albums of all time
An amazing first album. Four out of the eight songs are all time greats including two of my favorites in Simple Man and Tuesday’s gone.
As a non-American, Free Bird was the only song I knew. Such a great song, but wow, this whole album rocked.
A classic album
129/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕 (5/5)
One of my all time favorites
Fantastic album, southern rock at its finest.
Been waiting for some five star swamp rock! One of those albums that just captures so much about rock and roll. Tuesday's Gone (should be played every week), Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Free Bird. All stone cold classics, and the other songs I know less are pretty great too. Just an overall vibe of driving in the everglades or something on a propeller boat.
I threw around whether I wanted to give this a four or a five, but at the end of the day, this album has four all-time classics on it and the other four songs aren't anything to denigrate. FANTASTIC.
So damn good. A staple growing up as my dad loved them, the A side is perfect
This album is a 5. I don’t make the rules.
Skynyrd come out of the gate guns blazing with this one!
Still so good!
great album loved every song
One of the few good things to come from the South
-great solos -nice vocals -Tuesday's Gone is one of the most beautiful songs I just discovered -this is amazing -side A is perfect -I cant say much about this amazing classic album -LORD KNOWS I CANT CHANGE -favorite songs: I Aint The One, Tuesday's Gone (<3), Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man (<3), Poison Whiskey, Free Bird (<3) -least favorite song: Mississippi Kid
Classic!
Killer classic Southern Rock.
I've been sleeping on Skynyrd too long. This is like all the best parts of country music without the awful steel guitar!
no skips, free bird be of the best guitar solos ever
Every element is perfect. I love them.
This debut from Lynyrd Skynyrd is an absolute beast of Southern rock. It’s got everything from the epic "Free Bird" to the cool swagger of "Gimme Three Steps" and the soul-stirring "Tuesday’s Gone." Most of this album really hits home for me, though I'll admit "Mississippi Kid" and "Things Goin’ On" didn't quite gel with the rest—just felt a bit off compared to the rest of the bangers here. But man, the rest of the tracks? They're all about that raw, gritty vibe that paints a real picture of the South's heart and troubles. It’s almost perfect; these guys know how to mix fierce guitars with deep, storytelling lyrics that stick with you. 4.5/5
I've got a fair few Lynyrd Skynyrd tracks in my playlists. They merged together so many different influences and created a catalogue full of great songs in just a few short years. Then tragedy struck and the world was deprived of them. Such a sad story, and one tinged with regret. Don't Ask Me No Questions (although, not actually on this album) is one of my favourite tracks of all time.
Heard it 100 times. Will hear it 100 more times. Free Bird
This is kinda hilariously Conservative. Like, both in it’s music, which is pretty typical Blues and occasional Honky-Tonk faire, but also in it’s lyrics. There’s a verse that rail’s against the space program. And weirdly, I kinda agree with it? Yeah, surely we should be putting money into making sure everybody is fed and housed and clothed before we even consider sending people to space? But I’m looking at this from a modern Communist’s perspective, and surely I shouldn’t have the same opinion about the space race about a group of Commie hating rednecks like Lynyrd Skynyrd, who sing shit like Mississippi Kid? Whatever, musically this shit slaps. I’m not a big fan of the lyrics, but fuck it, I don’t really care. For the duration of this album, I’m a conservative, Republican voting, American redneck. And I will drink my own, European, Commie tears for as long as it takes
Gotta go for 5 just given the unreal track listing and intense impact. Not my favorite band but unmistakable legacy on music.
Forgot how many great songs came from this album. Great listen
Southern Rock! Bit of Country! But never realised how much they sound like Aerosmith in some of these. Of course, Free Bird is superb, but the real star of this album is Simple Man. Incredible song that I could listen to all day.
The "bowwww" just before the second half of Free Bird kicks in may be the single greatest note in music history. The rest of the album is also great
I don't know why I never listened to this album before, but thank god I have now. All the songs have amazing guitars and drum performances. "Gimme Three Steps" is a groovy song that mixes its goofy premise seamlessly. "Free Bird" is the standout song from this album and it is iconic. That ending guitar solo is the perfect 4 minutes to end the album. If you've never listened to this, you definitely should (5/5)
Probably the most influential southern rock record of all time. I know some of these songs are kind of played out, but they’re still so good. “Tuesday’s Gone” is my favorite song on here, and I’ve been listening to it on repeat since listening to the album. “Poison Whiskey” is probably my least favorite song on here, but it’s still solid. Overall just a fantastic record.
Amazing
It's a stone cold classic. 4 of 8 tracks are legendary and the other 4 are real good.
There is precisely 1 valid rating for this album. Favorite track: Simple Man
Southern rock at its finest. A few songs are simply decent rather than great, but it's still a fun time regardless. Best Song: Free Bird (obviously) Worst Song: Mississippi Kid Album Score: 9/10
A classic southern rock album, nice and raw
Not for me, but objectively it’s great. Free bird alone makes this a 4 but this album is all singles
Love this album!
- tuesday's gone is a free gateway to heaven - consistently good guitars - this album sounds 70s in the best way possible - every track has a damn good solo - 5/5, peak 70s rock
SO GOOD!! Better than I expected. Added.
This album means the world to me. I know it makes me sound like a redneck, if anyone ever says anything bad about Lynyrd Skynyrd, I would quickly direct them to this masterpiece
This is just a great example if not the best of southern rock ‘n’ roll but there is out there. But it’s Skynyrd shows it all with great hooks amazing lyrics and ripping guitars. Great all around 5/5.
For somebody who claims not to be into Lynyrd Skynyrd, I sure do like a lot of their songs.
All killer no filler! Lynyrd Skynyrd brings it with there debut. It took me a long time to really dig into skynyrd, I knew the hits but never sat down and listened to the albums. It was probably a few years ago that i finally dug in and man these guys rule.

The album helped define the Southern rock genre, inspiring countless bands to incorporate elements of blues, country, and rock into their own music. In conclusion, "Pronounced 'Leh-'Nérd 'Skin-'Nérd" stands as a landmark album in the history of Southern rock, showcasing Lynyrd Skynyrd's exceptional musicianship and storytelling prowess. With its memorable lyrics, raw energy, and enduring classics, the album continues to inspire and influence musicians and listeners alike, cementing its place as a timeless masterpiece of American music.
Already intimately familiar with this album and it's one of my favorites. It's the best Lynyrd Skynyrd album (and there are several great ones). Not only are there many excellent songs, but the album works well as a whole for me as well. There's a good mix of rockers and ballads, and even the country song is good. Everything about this is stellar, and the guitar work in particular is as good as it gets.
Awesome
Genuinely love this album, some real iconic songs
This was a solid 4 all the way through, but Free Bird clinches the 5th star. “Lie-Nye-Ard Sky-Nye-Ard” know how to finish an album!
Quality album. My attention was a little divided listening to it and it's still a solid 5. Guitar Hero classic again with Free Bird. Also didn't know it was pronounced that way, so educational as well.
A fantastic debut album. LS pretty much created and defined "Southern Rock". Definitely a slice of music history, even without the classic "Free Bird". I'd put it in a "Top 50 albums you should listen to".
Just a great album.
Ronnie’s soulful voice, the wailing of the guitar army, and some of hardest driving music to make you get up and move, all holding aloft lyrical poetry. Few finer than Skynrd. If this isn’t a 5 none exist of this list.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) Debut album by Skynyrd. Contains all the songs you need by the band (and yes, I'm aware Sweet Home Alabama is not on this album). You got Tuesday's Gone (arguably their best song ever), Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and the always popular Free Bird. Southern rock staple and I do feel everyone should own or at least listen to it! 5/5
Great songs from beginning to end. Even the non-hits are incredible. This was a genre defining album.
I haven't listened to this in such a long time, I forgot how great this album is.
Southern rock at its greatest. All killer, no filler. Every song is a hit for a reason.
This Skynyrd album is up there for one of the greatest debut albums ever. It is stacked with hits. Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps, Tuesday's Gone, Poison Whiskey, and of course.... FREE BIRD!!!! Favourite songs: Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps, Tuesday's Gone, Poison Whiskey, Down South Jukin', Free Bird, Things Goin' On Least favourite songs: Mississippi Kid 5/5
Day78 - this is a great debut album.hearing al kooper’s story about discovering lynerd skynerd and really making southern rock popular is awesome. jacksonville in the 70’s was like seattle in the 90’s
Classic album by a classic band
Perfection. Though I wish there was more on here…great album.
Best song - Free Bird
"I Ain't the One", "Gimmie Three Steps", "Poison Whiskey", and "Things Goin' On" have the riffs (and the latter a piano solo). "Tuesday's Gone" and "Simple Man" superb ballads. "Free Bird" is Free Bird. Most excellent rock and roll.
10/10
Very good, so many bangers like free bird and simple man, but they never miss 5*****
Excellent album - love their sound. Had never head any of them other than Free Bird, but enjoyed them all. Will defo listen again.
Phenomenal
Pretty much a greatest hits album!!
Really enjoyed.
Pronounced ‘aw-sum suth-earn rock’. Hard to beat this hard rocking album for this genre!
Arguably the best debut album of all time. A classic from the goats of southern rock
Southern Rock’s GOAT!! Lots of hits on this debut album. ❤️❤️❤️
This really took me back. Hadn't listened to this album in 30 years. What a talented group and such an influence.
Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird - all amazing. As for the rest...also pretty damn good. I really enjoyed Mississippi Kid. This album rocks. Full marks.
Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Free Bird all on their debut album. On one hand I’m gonna side with Neil Young on that whole conflict. That said, Side A is basically all flawless Southern Rock. And with Free Bird closing it out, gotta be at least a 4.5 for me. As cliche as it is, this is a gold standard classic rock album.
So many good songs on one album.
This is Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut studio album. Rock, with a Southern twang, this album contains many of the band's most well-known hits including "Tuesday's Gone," "Gimme Three Steps," "Simple Man," and "Free Bird." "Free Bird" was syndicated nationwide and propelled Lynyrd Skynyrd into rock and roll history. This album had a huge impact on popular culture and is worthy of the recognition.
Probably their best album. Makes me happy listening to it.
Good throwback!
Not every song is a 5☆, but still the album averages 5☆.
(Hay-ell Yay-ahhhhh)!
Great
Amazing Album. Skynyrd came out strong on their first album and never slowed down.
Can’t believe how many great songs are on this album!
Great musicians, great music. Havent ever heard this album before, just free bird and simple man, what an album.
Did they have any other albums? Gimme three steps. Tuesday's gone. Simple man. Freebird. Heck of an album all around. This easily passes my question of "could I see someone hear this and start a band".
Just some really good classic American rock n roll. Some big times hits and some hidden gems (for those not familiar with Lynyrd Skynyrd like myself), and not a single disappointing or bad song throughout. Spotify had some demo versions that don't really do much for me, but I'm not holding that against the album.
Thoughts before listening: This is basically the blueprint for southern rock. Being a southerner myself Lynyrd Skynyrd is very important for a lot of the bands I grew up hearing on the radio, for better or for worse. This is a classic full of iconic songs, and despite the punchline that Skynyrd and "Freebird" have become years after their peak, this is a great album. Review: Any album where half of the songs are "Gimme Three Steps", "Tuesdays Gone", "Simple Man", and of course "Freebird" is going to be a fun listen, but this was even better than I remember. I also enjoyed some of the lesser known songs like "I Ain't the One". There's great guitar throughout this album and an awesome classic rock sound. Definitely a 5-star album.
It's hard to believe I was one year old when album came out but my older sister was big into classic rock so I know I was exposed to this early on and I vividly remember listening to all the classic rock albums and loving the sound and the energy. Going back and listening to this album all the way through for the first time this would definitely be one of those that you would put on the record pop down on the bed and read all the album liner notes look at the artwork maybe draw that you would definitely enjoy this whole album in one city. Such a big sound from this band and seeing how many members were in The band I could imagine there weren't a lot of overdubs that it was all their arrangements and everybody had their own parts and some fine quality songs and. Definitely a great album and for one of my opinions the best musical errors of the US.
Great album, classic
grossartig southern bluesrock, rnb
10/10
CLASSIC rock here at it's finest. The hits are so fucking good, simple man, free bird, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps. Holy shit I could listen to this stuff all day long. Some of the middle tracks do fall off a bit but the sound is still consistent so it's got that going for it. 9/10
Absolute classic
If you want a great introduction to classic Southern Rock, here you go.
Freebird!
There were a few 'misses' on here, but mostly hits. Classic early 70s rock. Gotta love it.
Incredible
WON'T YOU FLYYYYYY HIGH FREE BIRD
It’s Skynyrd man.
kako ja ovo tek sad prvi put cujen???? Gitara na Free Bird >>>>>>>
Meni jedan od najdrazih albuma
Najdrazi rock bend!! Napokon!
Got me so fired up I listed to the next two albums too
Southern rock in a single album. I Ain't The One is underappreciated.
What a great record, all killer, no filler! It invented Southern Rock the way we know it today, but is definitely one of the best Rock albums ever, Southern or not. Free Bird, Simple Man and Tuesdays Gone alone are classics, but the rest is complete up to par.
I loved every second of this album! So many good memories associated with these lyrics and melodies grew up, listening to them, and it stands the test of time truly a classic
I want you to flyyyyyyyy freeeee biiiiird!!!! Also these guys have some sick guitar lines
I'd forgotten how great this album was. There's the obvious legendary guitar hero "Free Bird", but the rest of the album is good as well, "Tuesday's Gone" and "Gimme Three Steps" to name but two.
Awsome
Great debut album. Fully formed sound and not a bad track!
Not in the league of CCR but it would be a little weird to have a 1001 without LS, and for sure, this is the album to include. Not every song is as strong as the highlights: Tuesday's Gone, Free Bird, Simple Man, but that's already half a record of classic songs, but overall 9/10.
Excellent in every respect. Bonus points for having my top three LS tracks. Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man are some of the finest pieces ever written, and Free Bird speaks for itself.
I'd give 4.5 if I could. 5 is too much, 4 is too few. Squeezing 9 and 7 minute songs in and running just over 42' is a feat.
This album is a blast, from deep blues to hard rock, a must listen.
This album brought back so many memories of hanging out with friends and listening to music, cookouts and good food, good friends and beer.
Banger after banger. A perfect record.
I am a HUGE Lynyrd Skynyrd fan and have been for decades. This is by far one of their best albums ever. Their sound is just fun and great for toe tapping!
record worthy
Album 288 of 1001 Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced 'Leh-'Nérd 'Skin-'Nérd) Rating : 5 / 5 Favorite Track : Simple Man Just a great album. I've been waiting for this one to pop up. When I last heard it a few months ago, as I was listening through the playlist, I earned a new respect for it. I have always known the songs on this album as individual tunes, having never really sat down and just put the album on of my own accord. I knew that as I listened this time, I wanted to hone in on the 3 songs that I felt are weakest on the album and give them a closer listen. The first 4 tracks are fire. When someone speaks of albums with the best opening songs, this is one that will come to mind. After that comes 'Things Goin' On', 'Mississippi Kid' and 'Poison Whiskey'. After my last listen, I felt that these 3 weren't quite up to the same level as the others on the album. I've changed my mind on that and will say my earlier opinion was based on an overall unfamiliarity with the tunes. They fit in quite well and aren't weak links, at all. Awesome album. It is too bad that they were kind of pigeonholed by many and not ceded the ranking they deserve in recording history, by many.
A fantastic southern rock album that has great song after great song.
Fantastic! If you like great jams!
my dad and i went to see them at MSG in the early 2000s. he got a traffic ticket for making an illegal right turn on red, and we almost missed the band bc we thought they had an opener but it turned out they were the opener. which was a huge shame, they opened for Kid Rock and we left after their set because fuck kid rock. LS killed, they were great. love them.
Un classique. Un doudou. Trop d'excellentes chansons pour mettre autre chose que 5. "Simple Man", "Tuesday's gone", "Free Bird". Pour un premier album, ça va.
Didn't realise this was their first album. Freebird man, what a track!!
Always a good classic album
Great album. Surprised how many hits were on this one.
Incredible album. Can't believe so many great tunes were from LS were on one record. Easy 5/5
That was utterly cracking. I think 5 stars alone for Simple Man and Free Bird, but so many other good songs - Tuesday's Gone was probably my favourite of the rest. Essentially my kind of music. Soaring.
I know Lynyrd for Free Bird but the rest of this album is just as good. A tight 40min album where no time is wasted, just high quality Rock throughout. Highlights: I Ain't The One Simple Man Free Bird
I know Lynyrd Skynyrd's hits but never listened to an album before. My dad is a fan and I used to listen to them with my mates a fair bit when I was younger. I don't care how cliché it is to say, free bird is an absolute banger. Tuesdays gone and simple man aren't far behind either. For me, gimmie 3 steps isn't quite in the same league. Enjoyed poison whisky too It's easily a 4.5, if not a 5. It's short, and half the tracks are amazing.... Perhaps some of the other album tracks leave a little to be desired.... Probably being harsh there. Those 3 tracks are so good though
Great southern rock album. Saw the originals in April 1976.
I mean, come on now. This one's obvious.
