Classic but I just don’t care
A lockdown favourite of mine. I aspire to be as cool as the bassline on Money. 4/5. And that's unheard of.
Less profound than when I was 16! Probably my 3rd favourite Pink Floyd album. It's masterful, but falls flat in places. Time starts with clocks. Money with cash registers. Ugh.
Pretty good. It's apparent how influential the album has been over the years
Pretty dope! More psych leaning than I remember. Money was probably my fav song.
Hot take. This album would be perfect without Time and Money.
Had never listened to this although I knew it was a classic. Some really good stuff. Where are the lasers, though?
Have tried several times over the years to get into this and never succeeded, this was definitely the most productive listen though - still can't see the best album ever claims but starting to understand the appeal
2024-03-13...
Another 4.5 one. It lives up to the hype with hitters and album tracks
awesome
4.5. Obviously some of the songs are legendary, but there is also too much filler to get a 5.
Really like Money and Us and Them... some songs go on too long. Brain Damage is great song, reminds me of The Beatles.
Not a huge fan of Pink Floyd or concept albums, but I can see how this one is held in such high regard. As an album, it is masterfully crafted and each song is well thought out to flow seamlessly from one to the next.
i already like pink floyd
Undeniably a great Album, but it doesn't elicit a particularly strong emotional response or a desire to listen again, so I can't give it a 5.
What a trip. Genius album, especially for the time.
A deep, meaningful, beautiful album. I only think it suffers from being so familiar that it doesn't give the same mystery and wonder it once did.
A great album but I’m sure I will still attract the ire of others when I say that perhaps it is a touch overrated by some. Not an all time favourite of mine but still a must listen. While this album definitely belongs on any list like this - I’m blind to the full 1001 and after the ones I’ve had come up I do wonder if the period from 1965-75 is over-represented?
Totally get the hype for this album and Pink Floyd as a whole. My favorite was “Breathe”
As atmospherically beautiful as it is iconic. doesn’t mean it it’s one of the best albums of all time. It is great, but most certainly not their best
nice stuff but i don't like floyds
Not the best Floyd album
I wonder when and why I listened to DSotM for the first time. My guess is that it was the late 90s, and my curiosity had been piqued by the Wizard of Oz urban myth. (It's very difficult to proof-of-concept this whilst stoned. This should have been a clue.) Because my parents didn't listen to music (Jim Reeves aside) I never had a cultural inheritance to build my taste around. That said, my seventeen year ol evinces approximately zero interest in my cultural lynchpins, other than for curiosity value. Of course, in 199 whatever the gatekeeper consensus was far more dominant. But, to be fair, whilst it was limiting and did sift out a lot of stuff that ought to have had a seat at the (a) table, more often than not what did get in got in on the merits of the case. It's funny that this and, say, Marc Nolan (whom, I should say, I like) co-existed in the same general cultural space. Although one can draw a direct line linking Bowie and PF, and Bowie and MB. Bowie explains a lot of things, doesn't he? The Great Gig in the Sky still sends shivers up and down my spine. ...
4,4
Very good, will listen again. Score might change. 8/10
of course its a classic!
Solid cohesive album, a bit anxiety inducing at the start. Overall definitely a classic
Any time someone listens to this album on shuffle, Syd Barrett turns over in his grave
First listened to this album at a friend's house in 85. He put a set of headphones over my ears and played Any Colour you like. Been a fan ever since.
4.25
Great album, enjoyed the listennig. Heard it 3 times
A real good one, very familiar to me. Can’t remember if mom or dad listened to it more, but we definitely had it on often. No skips
I like it. I'm a little soured on it because of how hyped up it gets, it is a good album though. Will I listen to again: 60%
a good one
Have listened to this one many times. I think Meddle is better. I had the cd version of this album from Amoeba records.
One of the more difficult tasks with listening to highly influential music, especially something you missed, is that the tropes and concepts you are already well played out ideas and not as innovative as presented on an album. That being said, obviously this is a fully succinct work and there’s a reason it’s so beloved, emulated and frankly just well known. I was surprised how many of these songs I was familiar with despite never seeking out this album, or really much of Floyd.
If nothing else, this album is sound engineering at its best. Shorter than I remember, though. Another one that is hard against
This is unrecognizable one of the great albums of music history. I can give dozens of reasons why this is amazing, from songwriting, production, lyrics, clever buildup of songs, use of 7/4 time signature in Money changing to a 4/4, the centralising of themes. And more. And still. This album has never grabbed me as much as Wish You Were Here or Animals did. And for years I've tried to figure that out. Objectively amazing, personally not one of my favourites.
Influential but funky sounding for casual listening. Demands listeners attention.
Listened to this at a listening party at midway sf with Tomas. Realized many of these songs have one chord progression throughout and that money is a 12 bar blues. Really nice listening experience
I don't really get the appeal of it. It's a good Prog Rock/Psych Rock album, but I can't in confidence say that it's one of the greatest albums of all time. I may need to listen to it a few times more. 4/5. Favorite Track: Money
I liked all the crazy sounds.
All time classic.
Vad man väntade sig
Money is a great track. I really like the bluesy jam stuff on here but the random sound collage/clock stuff is not really very compelling
Nice
I like Pink Floyd. Always nice to hear it come on the radio. Not music in my collection find it kind of depressing.
Enjoyed the album. Felt a bit meandering at times, but also enthralling. I’ll be returning to it to keep diving deeper. It seems like an album that takes several listens to get the full experience.
Good Understand the Hype would listen again
One of the all time classics. Listening to it again after many years gave me a different perspective on it. I think it is much more engaging if the listener is stoned.
Wasn't a big fan in those days and now I wonder why. Really enjoyed it.
Very mellow with some interesting changes
Have listen before. Very good, nostalgic
Solid. I like "The Wall" better, but still very much a classic album.
First time ever listening to this. It’s decent, money is the best song by far for me.
It starts out so strong but slightly falls away in the last 1/4 for me still a mad album.
I guess I have to like it?
A mid to low 4. Great songs when they eventually get around to them, but just too much nonsense in between. I suppose that’s art. Iconic album with iconic artwork, but too much nonsense I skip and not enough non-nonsense to enjoy. Best track ‘Us and Them’ - pure class
This is a really interesting album. It's obviously one of the most popular, iconic, best selling of all time. I listen to it and it's obviously a good album, but I just can't quite connect to it. That's not to say I don't like it, I do! but without half stars, is it a 3 or a 4? Going through the track listing, I think the instrumental On The Run is a throwaway, and the shrieking in The Great Gig In The Sky was off-putting in an otherwise very good song. Other than that, the other songs are all hits. How can I *not* give it a 4?
Probably one of the most inventive albums of all time.
Excellent album
First time I listened to this properly on good headphones and no distractions. Very good record. Solid from start toy finish.
By the end, I felt like I was descending into a bad dream. Not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing, which is concerning.
9/10
Classic
'm having fun - this is definitely sickkkk to listen to while super high and vibing out lol All the songs that are actually songs are really cool I like the psychedelic stuff normally so its up my alley also roger waters is sick and only a cool dude could make a cool album like this
8/10 Highlights: Time
This will be interesting as I'm going into this having only heard a couple songs from this album. That means I will be a real unbiased opinion from a millennial that has never given this album a fair shake, but have heard how it's one of the best albums of all time. Speak to Me: Instrumental. Heart beat sound is an interesting part. Breathe: Nice song. I can hear a mix of genres which is a nice touch. Not many lyrics which lets the music, well, breathe. Not sure if that was the intention but it fits really well with the song. This is not the extended version so it has a sort of abrupt ending. On the Run: Huge shift from the last song. Instrumental and very upbeat. This must be what was used in the Chicago Bulls entrance themes in the 90s because that was my immediate recognition. Not a bad instrumental but it changes the flow of the album. Time: Long instrumental buildup over the first two minutes is very good. Especially considering the time it was recorded. Overall this is a fantastic song great musically, instrumentally, and the lyrics go along great with the song. I was concerned when I saw a 7 minute song, but it cruises along with the right changes at just the right time so nothing over stays its welcome and you don't realize you just listened to a 7 minute song by the time it ends. The Great Gig in the Sky: Another song with no lyrics but it's still very good. I read about this previously unfortunately so I kind of knew what to expect from the infamous song where the singer was paid 30 pounds. I could hear the emotion she was told to put into the song. Money: The first song that I have already heard prior to this full album listen. There really isn't much I can say about this song. It's a classic that many people have heard due to it being used in many places. Us and Them: Nearly 8 minutes of a dream like song. I enjoyed the big chorus part around 2:50. Other than that this song was a lower point on the album for me personally. I think that's because the song kind of dragged on after 5 minutes and just turned into good background music. Any Colour You Like: Very good instrumental. Nice use of effects and varying instruments on this song. Some times you don't need lyrics. Brain Damage: The most lyrically heavy song on the album (also has the albums name in the lyrics). Still very good and like the previous song is one of my favorites on the album. A great track for the penultimate of the album. Eclipse: Short song and sort of an interesting way to end the album. I must say that I wouldn't call this one of the greatest albums of all time. Maybe the hype sort of killed that for me? It is very good, don't get me wrong, but I've heard 5 albums previously during my 24 days on 1001 Albums Generator that I would consider better than this album. 4 out of 5.
Would listen again
I knew this album was pretty widely praised but hadn't ever actually listened to it before. I enjoyed it. I would listen again
Good
After some poor albums, this album was a nice release. It was lovely to hear actual well composed, good music. I know sometimes pink floyd is seen as good because they've made a name for themselves but there's a reason why they're so popular. Between the amazing guitar rifts and the smooth vocals this album is such a beautiful listen. The only reason this isn't a five star album is because it didn't quite give me that escapism like certain music does.
beautiful
Didn't know how big of pompous jerks the Pink Floyd really were, but really glad Clare Torry finally got paid for her vocals in 2005. "Great Gig in the Sky" still impresses me.
Great album sans Money. Terrible track
Classic. Incredible. 50 years and still hitting all the right shots. Subjectively I enjoy ‘wish you were here’ and ‘the wall’ more, but talk about the definition of what good, groundbreaking music is. I feel fortunate that I heard this album for the first time while also having one of my first exposures to marijuana. No longer a fan of weed, but feel like that was a signature pairing for 15 year old me.
A beautiful record but I don’t love it as much as I would want to
didn't like the beginning but got pretty good very fast afterwards
Lots of tracks with sound effects, but the actual songs are catchy. Some really good vocals and neat sound effects. Like a little journey.
It is a great album and and of course it is iconic, and feels like an experience when listening to it in full. But in terms of replayability, this isn't an album I would revisit regularly, or on any given day. So for me, while it is a great album for a listen through, it isn't something I would regularly come back to, unless I was in need of some kind of existential mind bending relaxation.
It was just a lot of cool sounds And I love the Imagine Dragons
obviously near masterpiece no debating but doesn't do as much for me as 5s I've given . Us vs them is crazy tho
"The Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd is a monumental masterpiece that stands as one of the most iconic albums in the history of music. Released in 1973, it's a concept album that delves into themes of life, death, and the human condition. Tracks like "Money" and "Time" are synonymous with progressive rock and are known for their intricate musical arrangements and thought-provoking lyrics. The album's production is a testament to Pink Floyd's pioneering use of sound effects and studio technology.
Brani Preferiti: - "Time" - "The Great Gig in the Sky" - "Money" Note: Mai stato un fan dei Pink Floyd.
Fav: Us and Them LF: Money It's a classic sure, idk. 8
Really enjoyed the flow and transitions
Classic. Love the way it flows the whole way through, always a good time listening to this album
I mean, It's Dark Side of the Moon. It's a classic. Still think I prefer The Wall though. If you play it at the same time as Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 you will have a religious experience. Liked Songs - Time, Great Gig in the Sky, Money, Us and Them, And Colour you Like, Brain Damage, Eclipse
Enjoyed it more than I remembered from my last listen.
I’m totally wizard of oz-pilled now
I loved the album my least favorite song was on the run but my favorite was money! Overall, I really enjoyed the album and Pink Floyd’s music!
Liked this. Don’t think I have previously listened to the full album.
Time is still a really strong track. Overall more up my alley but not my favorite ever
Wow I haven’t listened to this one in a minute. Pink Floyd’s proggy elements have always been tempered by a solid sense of popular songcraft and this is the pinnacle of that. Sure, it’s druggy and a little pretentious but not so much that you can’t enjoy the songs outside of the context of the entire album. Time for example is just a good song, period. That being said, I forgot about all the synth washes. And saxophones. Anyways, whatever, happy to revisit this one, which is more than I can say about the bulk of the boomer bullshit on this list.
Classic, and perfect for a Friday.
Pretty cool. Found the actual songs a bit less interesting than the rest
7.5
Woah whats the new album! Never heard this before! Wow! So cool & new! ! !!
Pretty good background music dragged a bit at the beginning. Might need a relisten
It is obvious that this album has influenced modern music as well know it. Just based on this it deserves a 5 however since this album has influenced so much music after it it caused for my personal experience to be watered down. Because of this personally I will rate 4 stars.
I've always really enjoyed this album. However, being a big Pink Floyd fan, I don't think this is their best works. Best production, maybe, but not the best songs. Still an amazing listen everytime! 4.5/5
Nice!
Some overly long intros, outros, and interludes, but the actually meat of the songs is incredible. Definitely an experience to listen to.
Really enjoyed this, been anticipating the listen for quite a while. Unlike quite a lot of things I’ve heard (honestly). “Us and them” would have to be one of my favourites, as well as “Breathe”. Although, I enjoyed all of them. I really liked the meaning behind a lot of the songs, as well as the feel you get from them. For example, the song “On the Run” sounds and feels like you are running fast or being chased by something. Sort of sounds like the music you get when fighting the final boss in a video game. I thought the cash register sound effects at the start of “Money” were very fitting. I really like the chill vibe you get from “Breathe”. I think it’s placed very well being the 2nd song in. It’s a bit unusual to get into at first with the opening track making you question whether the track is playing, as it is very quiet. I definitely gathered that it’s a much better listen with headphones. Overall I really enjoyed the album, I think it’s one that will become better over a few more listens. At this stage I have it at a 4. It’s just way too good to be any lower🔥
Amazing listen. The true definition of an album experience. I don’t understand how this album was made 50 years ago, the production is perfect.
I can't imagine what it was like to have this drop in 1973. For me when i first heard it I thought it was over-hyped and boring aside from Money. Now that I'm no longer a 14 year old skate punk I can appreciate it for its merits even if I still find The Great Gig In The Sky to be a bit silly. It's not my favorite Pink Floyd but it's better than I used to give it credit for.
classico
It’s hilarious how much higher this album is rated than any other one I’ve gotten so far. Who ever would have guessed.
I will be honest going into this album I had very mixed feelings because for one this is one of the most iconic albums of all time so I didn't want to dislike it and be that guy but on the other hand I was really not a fan of their first album which I had listened to. That being said this album lived up to its hype for the most part. I was a little worried because the first few songs on this album were good but not game breaking except for "Breathe". Then we get "Time" which is the start of the really good shit. Personally I could have gone without the ear piercing clock noises as I was listening to this full volume with headphones while cooking my dinner but after that the song is incredible. Beyond that the album is immaculate. My favorite song is probably "Us and Them" but really from "Money" to "Eclipse" you can't really go wrong. The thing that stands out on this album before everything else to me is the guitar work throughout. I don't know I have listened to an album that had such consistently great guitarwork. That being said I think this album really is held back from being a 10/10 by "On the Run". It was genuinely grating to hear and that coupled with the start of time was the worst 3-4 minutes I have heard on any album that is this highly regarded besides "Love To You" on Revolver. That being said I still really enjoy this album and think that for the most part it deserves all the credit it gets. 9.5/10
A masterpiece. Fantastic commentary on growing old and society.
FAVO: Time, Money, Us and Them
Pink Floyd. Favorieten: On The Run, Us And Them, Any Colour You Like
Day 1 of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard this album before. But this is exactly why I'm doing this, to find classic and incredible albums that have somehow passed me by. The fact each track bleeds and continues into the next is so satisfying to the ear. To be honest, some of it is a bit too psychedelic for me. However, it isn't boring that's for sure. Favourite Songs - Breathe, Money, Us And Them.
good enough
An absolute classic. I don't know how many times I've listened to this album. Best tracks: Breathe, Us and Them, Any Colour You Like
Great album!
musiałbym pewnie więcej razy przesłuchać by docenić
I can't believe in my 29 years of existence this is my first time listening to this album. It is nothing like I expected, but everything I thought it would be.
Cool album, heard it before and always enjoyed it, some amazing songs in there but don’t love the interludes and IMO there’s a few filler songs.
Can’t go wrong with Pink Floyd
I can tell it's good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would. It's a 4 because it's a classic but it's somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me.
Good classic album
I know this is supposed to be one of the best rock albums, but Pink Floyd just never really did it for me. There's good elements to it, but I'm just not a big fan. 3.5/5
Excellent if pretentious stuff
Has to be overrated because its regard is so inflated. For historical reasons as much as anything. I found many of the same things in it to like that others always find, but I found other parts overlong, or not particularly interesting. Still, it’s an undeniable mood of an album. Feels like cinema. There’s nothing quite like this album, even if its ideas feel a little protean. 4/5
Outstanding production, great playing and a great listen. Just lacks an out and out 5 star song to get top marks
I understand why people like it, but it's too depressing for me.
Okay... I've let this one sink in and listened to it over and over again and I really like how the songs kinda blend into each other, but on the whole I don't get what all the fuss is about. I really liked and could identify with the lyrics of Time and this album is much more trippy than I expected. Maybe because drugs are for lowlifes (thank you, no. I'm straight) I'll never fully comprehend what this album really is. I guess that's something I'm going to have to come to terms with and endure the hatred and ridicule for people f'ing up this perfect five. Sorry peeps...
I literally wore this record out. Money might be my fav Pink Floyd song but I think Wish You Were Here might be the better whole album. Pretty close though...
50 years on and this still is pretty impressive and unique - word!
unpopular opinion: not their best
Too much effects and too little substance. Was groundbreaking at the time, but it sounds quite a bit outdated, now.
HISTORY (even though in my opinion this is not the best album by Pink Floyd).
i’ve heard this album before favorites time the great gig in the sky money
Solid album
Pink Floyd does not need my review
Yes it's great, but it's symptomatic also of the facelessness of the Floyd. Their best-known album and it doesn't have a track that punches through to the global music psyche like Bo Rap or Whole Lotta Love. Having said that, the production on this album is amazing.
Meow
When the album art is better than the album... Although it still rocks
Okay look. I thought this would be an instant 5. And some tracks certainly were. And it's a concept album. And the band goes off. And I like weird shit. But tbh, my problem with this album is that aside from Money there's nothing that stands on its own. This is good art, and I love it. And it earns a 4 from me
lots of good songs on this one.
I don't even really like Pink Floyd, but you can't argue with it.
Very cool Album, was way different than I thought it would be, but in a good way!
I’d never listened all the way through, but that’s definitely the way to do it
Cool!
This album is good, but nowhere near as good as the hype and it’s iconic status would lead you to think. Probably not even in Pink Floyd’s top three.
Damn Mr Floyd
A very enjoyable listen. This would be a nice album to put on and chill out with. The transitions are pretty cool. I'm beginning to like Pink Floyd more. My favourite song was Brain Damage.
Better than expected but I feel like the reason it gets so much hype is that it must’ve been incredible for its time. Nowadays it’s sound has been replicated so it doesn’t seem as unique
Dark Side Of The Moon. Perhaps the most iconic album cover ever? It's certainly up there. I don't think I've sat and listened closely enough to this album before, so this should be a good one. Yeah this is WAY ahead of its time. It's so seamless. Great Gig had me until the wailing. Another timeless record. Loved it. Notable Songs - Breathe Time 8/10
Amazing. Pivotal for my youth and a big album at the time.
In which Roger Waters begins to grab the steering wheel. I don't think this is their masterpiece - I do remember being dazzled by it when it came out, but being bored by it a few weeks later. It's certainly one of their better albums, but - and this is quite unusual for Floyd - the best tracks are the shortest ones and the worst tracks are the longest ones.
Pink Floyd makes me feel weird because I feel like I’m missing something. I don’t understand why this album is such a cultural touchstone. Not that it’s bad. Time is my favorite track because stuff actually happens. Yeah, I don’t know. Light 4.
Thought I didn’t like Pink Floyd all that much, but actually really enjoyed this album.
Still songs to get high to. Or sit by a fire to. Or gaze wistfully from widow’s walk for our loved one to return to. Or to get murdered to on a dark street in a 1980s slasher.
Money is the standout Last two songs are a great ending sequence
Best till now
This was better than I remember. There are some moments from this album that are spectacular. I do wish the more experimental moments were shorter. I really like the flow of the album but I found myself being like…alright let’s move on.
Starts like a film track, ends like a great album.
Aside from The Wall, I've never listened to a full Pink Floyd album. Dark Side is great. Time is by far my favourite track.
This album is a much looser concept album than the wall, though its trappings are so conceptual that its hard to pierce this morning after not a lot of sleep. Us And Them feels appropriately triumphant. Yea I just didnt get it. worth a relisten just for the culture around this album.
what a masterpiece. at first, the transition into breathe legit made me squeal a bit it was that good. pink floyd has always been a family favourite and this has made me love the band even more. however, i wish it was longer </3 4.5/5
Some good shit
I feel like I should have been watching The Wizard of Oz with this.
Classic.
4.5/5. This is a really good album. Not much else to say.
Good prog innit
Psychedelic masterpiece concept. Flows from beginning to end. You’ve heard every song on the album even if you never heard the album before. Wonderfully ethereal. Hurt by the fact that it’s been played so many time that some people have heard it so much that it’s tiresome. So highly rated if feels overrated at this point
really enjoyed, more hopeful than i remember, especially brain damage. 8/10
the dark side of the moon is similar to the other two pink floyd albums i've reviewed so far: wish you were here and the wall. the specific, reoccurring sounds (the heartbeat, money clinking, the laugh, etc.) tie the whole album together, like a concept album but also like a musical. the songs flow into one another with such ease, which makes me regret ever having heard pink floyd on the radio (aka out of order and incomplete). roger waters' lyrics are just as beautiful and poignant. the thought behind such songs like "money." what makes the dark side of the moon different is how hard pink floyd leaned into the progressive. there was more experimentation, specifically the keyboards. there's also this psychedelia feel, which makes sense in 1973. several songs created such a colorful visual in my head.
I have long associated this music with "space age". This science fiction vibes of this album have always resonated with me and while I know this album didn't pioneer that sound, it certainly perfects it. I have enjoyed imagining over the years that this is the album that aliens would be listening to if they were interested in Earth music, and not just because of the album name, either. This commentary brought to you by someone who is actually not under the influence of psychedelics, believe it or not. Like most Pink Floyds, this is a total concept album that is built to be experienced from beginning to end. It tells a specific story, has a very specific flow, with timeless songs and overtures. Every song is otherworldly and soaring. It is so easy to think of this album as one giant continuous experience piece, because it very clearly is intended to flow that way. The heartbeat opening and closing tracks just tie things together even more nicely. This album, simply put, is just an experience that really should be heard. This album is about a 4 for me, and a definite 5 for relevance to the project.
It was good but idk how much i really loved it. I feel like a lot of love for it is nostalgia factor
A masterpiece
Eh geil, i mein classic, sömpis cutten wie bei money sicher very innovativ für 1973 aber ohne blunt in hands schon a bissi anstrengend. schönste: der ref bei us and them "forward he cried from the rear and the front rank died", money guit riff und das cover
Love the songs. The bits between are not my thing.
First ever PF album. I completely understand now why it’s so heavily devoted and respect in the music industry as a whole. Every song is very cinematic and makes you feel like you are in a movie. Music is an art of its own in the way it’s used as story telling and how it can set a mood, and this album does a great job of that. I take the year into respect because hearing this in the 70s/80s is kind of insane, but after first listen I’m going to say this album is slightly overrated. I have little complaints, but it’s def not a 10/10 and a “perfect album”. Personal rating is going to be a 8.9/10
It was a blast when I heard it first in 1983/1984. Still, after all these years it is something that speaks to me, despite the foreseeable harmonies. Nothing to have in the background. More a sound-movie than just an album.
I'm a fan of this album, it's pretty advanced for the time with some of the electronica elements in On The Run, and the use of audio clips repeating in Money. Overall an enjoyable listen.
Well well well. Let me start by saying I dislike Pink Floyd - but this is the album I always bring up as an exception to them actually having a fun record. And yes I can still corroborate that statement - begrudgingly I say as far as records go this is a perfectly balanced well written album - not merely a collection of songs but a volume in itself. It does not taper or sag in the middle and gets your attention from the start. It’s a really good record. But because it is Pink Floyd it gets a 1 star penalty. Especially because Roger ‘the Sponge’ Waters is a self absorbed dick
Classic for sure!
Classic! Certainly the most familiar to me so far. Although I’m a big Pink Floyd fan, and this has two of my favourite tracks (and one of my all time favourite rock songs, Money), as an album there are others I’d put ahead of it. So 4 stars from me.
An album everyone should hear at least once.
Niceeee
Always a classic and good listen. The Great Gig in the Sky is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard.
For being 49 years old this holds up
This is one of those albums that I could have playing in the background on repeat all day long and just enjoy the ambiance.
Classic. First time I’ve listened all the way through. Still rings true after all these years.
Rock progresivo
Funny one this. Came to Floyd for the Syd Barrett stuff, via Robyn Hitchcock, I have no real love for later iterations and that's always been my position, despite mates and the entirety of society insisting it's one of the best records ever made. Certainly one of the best covers. So let's see. There's some obvious classics here, Breathe, I wish was as long as Money (see below), 2 minutes is a waste of that lush sound. Great Gig, is obviously stratospheric. Aside from that, On the Run is some fun noodly noises, fine, Time is nice in a cross between the previous two tracks kind of way, so far we are all good for playing on a hot day. Money, I just do not care for that much. I enjoy the odd time signature, that's good, but other than that it's just a blues rock song, which is fine, I just don't feel it. Us and Them is the centrepiece I warm to, that's great. I like that the rest of the album bleeds into eachother and Eclipse is a good finish. So ok, it gets a 4 - mainly because of the classics. will I listen to it often, no.
Much much better than The Wall - a decent run time, some good songs and not actually that proggy.
Ruhige, entspannte Titel. Leichter Soulcharakter
4 stars
Robots and space and society sucks, but they have cool guitars and a sax Blends well together and finishes strong
Good album tho not my exact type of genre
It’s hard to hit the mark when your aim is a complete concept album. Many have tried and failed. Pink Floyd are the standard bearers. Inadvertently, the album comes with not just itself but the phenomenon’s cultural grime. It actually muddies the water here. There’s a layer of Wizard of Oz and stoner space-out to push past to be able to listen with any real clarity. It’s worth that dive to hear it without the weight of “oh man, dude, you like really gotta..”
I expected this to be weirder!
Det bra pink floyd albumet
pink floyd albums are standing out so much because it feels like every moment in the song i supposed to be there, there is no unnecessary silence, not over the top instrumental. It all justs fits there
heard this album
I remember buying this back in the day. I really liked it and played it regularly. Then I heard New Rose by The Damned, so Pink Floyd became the enemy. I'm more kind to them now. It's a classic.
not as good as meddle end of review
3.5
Atmospheric- I’d listen again!!
fremragende men der findes bedre
I've listened to this album a zillion times so it's rather hard to rate it as if I've heard it for the first time. It's great, can't say much else.
Iconic and all that. Great vocals although at times it sounds like parody… or maybe I heard the parodies first? Dunno. Pink Floyd is one of my moms favorite bands, but this was not her favorite record when I was growing up, this was not on pay as often as Wall or the one with the pig. 4 stars will make it.
This album is obviously pretty good, but it was never my favourite Pink Floyd album. It's a 4.5, but I'm rounding down so that I can distinguish between this and the PF albums I like better (which will be 5), in case they're also on this site.
Great album, though it's not my favourite Pink Floyd album. The first half has a few weak bits, and I've never really enjoyed Time and Money, which seem to be very popular for some reason. That being said, the second half is amazing, and Brain Damage/Eclipse are two of my favourite PF songs. And the depth and layers of sound in Pink Floyd songs is amazing - this made me remember how amazing the Roger Waters concert was. Great stuff!
Liked it a lot! But crazy, but cool
Fín plata, margt mjög flott. Gott hjá ykkur, Pink Floyd. (En Money er leiðinlegt).
Another classic album I had never listened to. Sorta like meeting someone famous, you just hope they’re not an asshole. Well, this album is not an asshole. It’s just some classic rock n roll. I can see how this album could be a 5/5 for some folks but it just didn’t grab me that way. I was impressed with the mixing, tenderness and unexpected variety on the album.
I listened to this one a lot in high school. Seems like there's a lot of urban legend around it, like the whole Wizard of Oz thing. It has never quite lived up to he hype for me, but I do enjoy it. My favorites are the instrumentals "Great Gig" and "Any Colour."
Difficult to rate this one, I can't say I'm the biggest Pink Floyd fan. I think they're good but not a band I want to ever sit down and listen to. Very much the same with Dark Side of the Moon. It's such a cultural touchpoint and lauded so highly it's almost become boring to me. I'm guessing if I heard it on my own before I heard all the hype that wouldn't cloud my judgement. Culturally/musically it's a 5 but personally it's a 4.
Time and Money are classics. Great gig in the sky is hard to listen to. Us and them is a good song too!
Have any of you heard of this one before
Great album. Not much to say otherwise though. Classis and will stay classic.
Like Pantera, Pink Floyd are a band who I really liked when first getting into music, but have seldom use for. While I give them credit for introducing me to odder time signatures and elements of progressive and jazz, I'd much rather listen to King Crimson or Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. I find their themes and songwriting much more appealing. That said, I'll admit that one of my all-time favorites albums is by PF- Wish You Were Here. Dark Side of the Moon is pretty good, too. It flows together quite well and is a pretty smooth listen, even if I could go the rest of my life never listening to half of these songs again. A solid B.
Nice.
Good album but not really my vibe, still a solid 4, some tracks left quite a good impression despite the fact that I don't really like experimental-type of melodies
Really cool conceptual and very smooth adventure, it's still listens great and gorgeous
all the songs they sing on are great
Despite the cult of personality surrounding this album, it does deliver on its premise of a highly thematic rock album that doesn't get lost in its own narrative. Though some tracks tend to run long, the majority manage to exhibit a wealth of their own personality while still serving the overall LP as a whole, helping it to deliver a message of mortality and meaning.
Good album, second favorite Pink Floyd record. Very ethereal
Hard not to like this.
Legendary progressive rock album. Not my favorite PF album though.
Classic. Brain Damage
I remember enjoying this album, and I think it's good but was not feeling it this listen.
My earliest memory listening to this was in my freshman year science class through a headphone I was hiding. A gorgeous, layered album. Still a bigger fan of "Wish You Were Here". Favorite tracks: "Breathe", "Time", "Eclipse"
Methinks a foredoomed rating incoming.... was assuming a 5, but can’t justify it. Felt myself thinking “get on with it” too often between some great tracks. Sorry to my father in law in advance
I really dislike concept albums in the main. They seem to bring out the worst in Band's "creativity" leading to them just demonstrating how smart they are and sacrificing song-craft. This album though is bearable from that point of view. You can really see the shadow that Syd's departure continued to cast over the band from the lyrical content
By far the most enjoyable Pink Floyd album that this list has generated for me so far. So much better without "that psychedelic noodling stuff" (as Dave Gilmour described it). I had to read about the concept of the album in order to understand it. Each side reflects a journey through a human life, covering themes including greed, death and insanity. It also followed Syd Barret's breakdown and exit from the band. That context makes a big contribution to my understanding and enjoyment of the music. Overall, it is a pleasant listen and interesting idea which is well executed. However, musically it is a bit too polished for my tastes, which to me somehow detracts from its emotiveness. 3.5/5.
"Time" y "Money" las mejores canciones de este disco. Se disfruta más si se escucha entero como una sola obra, incluso creo que le sienta bien no estar en formato vinilo y así no tener que cambiar de cara. Aunque me gusta, para mí no es mejor que The Wall. 1973 y un grupo ya hacía estas cosas qué locura oír este vinilo ese año.
Love it
-Liked Time, Money, Us and Them -Very theatrical -Got better towards the end of the album -Classic Album but not my favourite genre -Can see why it's considered one of the greatest of all time
Classic, but not my favorite
This album is in regular rotation on our turntable at home because of my prog psych loving family. Not a fave of mine for sure but I can appreciate the sentiment.....next!
Classic high school dance tunes…. Great album….
A classic album graces us today. One that I have heard so much about throughout my life but have never truly listened to (either forwards or backwards). This was a fantastic album and as I've heard, best listened to all the way through. Time was one of my favs in the album. As a whole, this is a really cool concept of one long song all the way through. Lots of instruments and psychedelic feels to this. And this may be one of the coolest album covers ever. At least if you go to a college campus.
Bruh. Hit me a bit like "The Wall", didn't understand all the hype, not a big fan of the phsycadelic movement of the 70s, but it was a much better than that album. There was some actual feeling and creativity in this one. These are quick reviews so I'm not going into detail, but I think this album is about a 4.4
Brilliant stuff if not quite hitting the mark of WYWW for me
Liked it - some of it kid of washes over me a bit, but i can see why people rate it.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Breathe, Time, Brain damage
I don't like prog rock. Have never actually actively listened to this album before. I still don't like prog rock, but surprisingly I didn't hate this. I can appreciate that it is a masterpiece, hence the 4 stars. Not what I'd listen to for fun though.
classic but not as good as the wall
First time listening properly to Pink Floyd. This is much more avant-garde than I expected. Not quite my style, but I can definitely see why this album is counted as one of the greats.
An experience.
I once watched the synced up version of the Wizard of Oz and this album. It was fun. This good by itself too.
An iconic album that one never tires of listening to. It's only flaw are some of the long, instrumental segues and lead-ins that don't necessarily add much to the album.
Njoah
I'm not sure if it's the overly high expectations I had when I listened to this for the first time, but even on re-listening, it's not as perfect an album as the general opinion makes it out to be. It's still great, but it contains lulls and some unnecessary filler.
Hmm. I don't like this one as much as The Wall, but I don't feel good about going down to a 3. Iconic album art aside, I don't have that instant association with any of the tracks on this one. There are a couple rippin' guitar solos on this one though!
i know this one such a classic
Not my favorite Pink Floyd album, but still great
have to listen in chronological order
Veldig bra, men The Wall er bedre.
I quite like Pink Floyd, but never understood why this is regarded as their magnum opus. They have plenty of other albums, both earlier and later, which I prefer over this one. Still, it's solid. Maybe it's sprawling and unfocused... or maybe a dream-like collage of styles coming in and out of focus. I like that the album is confident enough to reward a patient full-album listening experience. I also like the actual songs when they do show up, and I like how the lyrics root all the psychedelia into down-to-earth post-war British experience. But yeah, it is sprawling and unfocused, and perhaps a little too mild-mannered than any rock album deserves to be.
Tim's right, this album is hard to deny. And yet... Just kidding! This is a really remarkable work and I think the best representation of what Pink Floyd are capable of at their best. It's coherent and focused, and really tells a narrative over the course of its tracks. At the same time, there are small moments when I feel like this record verges on indulgent and certain choices in the arrangements and overdubs don't quite sit as elegantly as they could. Especially in the first half of the record. An unfortunate tendency that would grow into quite a monster by the time The Wall came around. Listening to this so closely after Abbey Road, I'm struck by how much of the production choices are indebted to the former. I don't think this record could exist without this particular forerunner. They also have similarly incredible medleys making up their second sides. 4.5/5 Favourite songs: Us and Them through Eclipse
Ok didn't listen, but uhhh, yeah i know this album.
Pretty decent. Feels like it needs the experience of sitting and listening to the whole album without distraction and just leaning into it.
Pretty sure everyone is familiar with it and would probably rate it similarly. Great song composition, beautiful music and a great album.
excellent listen but not on a monday morning
mellow but driving
It's a classic sure, not all for me but some of it is great
Holding on in quiet desperation is the English way
bretty good
It’s a classic. Probably my favorite Floyd album- shame I realized I’m not a huge fan of Floyd
Not the biggest Floyd fan in the world, and this one isn’t my favorite of theirs. Still a really solid record.
Breathe was better
Slow, Softer Rock. I've heard people call this Alt-Rock before. I can see why its good, it's just not really what I personally like.
Revisiting this was surprisingly enjoyable. Maybe too many exposures from dope smoking hippy kids in college turned me off? Maybe an older?
One of the all time classic albums. Love it from beginning to end
The belting vocals were great, and the guitars. Very enjoyable
What can you say about this album? Obviously influential, but not in its actual form except for a few exceptions in the mainstream. The most selling psych-rock album probably ever, but something of a dead-end in American music despite decades of enthusiasm about it.
Eclipse, money, breathe
Chille muziek, niet helemaal voor nuchtere tijden
Familiarity: 7/10 Notes: it's dark side of the moon. If you seriously are not familiar just stop reading and start listening. Done? Good. Now then, this isn't even their best album! Get started! Real Rating: 8/10
Very Floyd
Really easy to listen too. Already heard most of the songs. But it was good to listen to the whole thing through.
What can I say this is a classic 9/10
this has some actually really good songs on them.. money is a banger.. brain damage and time.. wow but its also kinda over hyped so 8/10 for you
Another jam
Classic Floyd, I think the wall was the real peak up nothing bad here
