At least it was short

Uneventful.

ну неееее

not my preferred kind of 70s rock

Lyrically, the 20-minute track that opens this album gives off some serious "I'm 14 and this is deep" vibes. Musically, it sounds like a bunch of disconnected riffs without any real thread holding it together. ("Close To The Edge" it ain't.) The not-particularly-memorable tracks that make up the balance of this album show that Rush was in the process of finding their voice; it'll still be 3 or 4 more years (and a few more albums) before they start to turn out songs with the distinctive Rush stamp. (Literally also, Geddy Lee was still a few years from finding his ideal singing voice - the difference between the timbre of his vocals on *2112* and say, *Moving Pictures* is like night and day.)

Not the best Rush album. None of the songs are particularly memorable

2* just becuse it's Canadian, otherwise it would be 1*

Sure it's musically impressive but I don't get how this is meaningful to anyone other than the kind of guys who are really into star trek.

lo entiendo, viendo la gran imagen de las cosas y que fue un disco bastante interesante en su época pero meh, not my cup of tea, pero lo disfruté.

The opening “suite” was incredible. One of the best 20 minutes “songs” you can possibly listen too. Spacey parts, unbelievable guitar playing and great vocals too. The rest of the album don’t really carry on with the great start with more ballety songs. Could probably get to like the with more listens

Alright so I’ll admit at the get-go that I don’t like Rush. This is a perfectly fine album, and I know they’re a pioneer of prog, but I think there are a lot of contemporaries that do a lot of what Rush tries to do better. I’ll take Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, and Coheed & Cambria every time over this.

Every future part team music teacher's favorite band in high school

This just pissed me off.

Played it as background. Probably better as an in your face alternative.

15/01/2026 I honestly do not understand the hype around Rush. Yes they are talented, but I gotta say .... boring. Spotify listeners: 3.7 million

Meh. Magari da riascoltare

Very impressive musianship and vocals but often felt more like listening to a band jamming and lacked structure and strong melodies

Not totally my kind of music Instrumentals are fun It wasn’t bad, but I wasn’t blown away

Lots of screeching from vocals and electric guitars. Was expecting prog rock, stadium rock, loud rock of some sort and it duly came. Not my thing. One track was a little different - Tears - and I would enjoy hearing this again. The rest of it, no.

I saw this was 7 songs long and thought “hey, a short n sweet album for once! Let me give it a spin!” I knew something was wrong when not a single vocal came in after like 5 minutes of the same song. Jokes aside, the sound barring the vocal is really nice. I can see why this is considered the best early work of progressive rock. The vocals… I just think it could do with a little less (or a lot less) of screeching and whining. As for the story line, alas, I am not whimsy enough to fully appreciate this song’s science fiction lyrics with an alien and a priest??? Or is it actually an alien priest? To be honest I still haven’t a clue what this is trying to convey. I felt the exact same way about imaginary disk’s concept except this is way more in your face and the sound isn’t so transcendent like imaginable disk’s that I am willing to wade through it. Eh, 2.5.

20 FUCKING MINUTES ARE YOU MAD? WHY IS ONE SONG MORE THAN HALF THE ALBUM'S LENGTH?? I really enjoy 2 songs, but you can't have just 2 songs on an album. Not my thing that's all, I get why others seem to enjoy it.

190/1001 Rush - 2112 Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ This one just isn't for me. I really don't like the vocals on this and the music itself is fine. It all just feels a little cheesy and not my favourite kind.

Listened to the first 2 songs and wasn’t really into it. Need to come back to this

Firstly, a twenty minute song is taking the piss but secondly, all the songs lowkey sounded the same…

When looking up Rush on my music streaming app, I scrolled through their most streamed songs and my first thought was, "I don't know a single one of these songs." So I am going into this completely blind, but based on the band name, album cover and year this came out I am going to assume this is a rock album... This album was very forgettable for me. Sonically it was good, but nothing really stuck or stood out to me. It was long and the songs dragged on. I don't see myself returning to this album

Good drummer, annoying voice, inconsistent vibes

An album that instantly feels dated and also experimental. I personally hate when an artist smushes 10 songs together into one but sure whatever. The soundtrack to a movie I wouldn't watch.

When this came out I was in 6th grade, and I remember a kid in the neighborhood loved this band. He raved about how great they are, but I couldn't get over the fact that I found the singer's voice incredibly annoying. I have given Rush a listen over the years and do like some of their songs. They are very good musicians, and I especially appreciate Neil Peart's drumming. As I listened to this again for the first time in a long time, I kept thinking - it would be so cool if they just focused on doing instrumentals - for 2 reasons: 1) The aforementioned annoying voice of Geddy Lee. He is much better on the songs (or parts of songs) where he isn't shrieking. I've seen some people make comparisons to Robert Plant's voice and - I don't know what it is exactly - but I think Robert Plant's voice is awesome while Geddy Lee is incredibly grating. I guess we all have different ears. AND 2) I also find the lyrics kind of silly. It seems like they are trying to be deep (especially on the first side track) but it just comes across as corny to me. And after realizing they were inspired by Ayn Rand it makes more sense since her books are like that - purportedly deep but populated with one dimensional caricatures and very flimsy philosophy In 2026, the "priests of the temples of syrinx" sound like they are the tech-bro billionaires of all the "magnificent seven" tech companies - so maybe they were on to something?? I've got 2 songs "liked" on Spotify (Passage to Bangkok and Tears) since they aren't as annoying. Although the "oriental riff" on Passage to Bangkok is kind of dated/stereotypical, so it kinda drops that one by a notch. Liked songs on Spotify: 2/6 Rating: 2/5

Not my vibe, but interesting

Eindruck: bisschen nervig Rating: 4/10 Favourite: Tears Anmerkungen: bin nicht so prog rock Fan (außer Pink Floyd‼️) so wenn ich mich Ma drauf einlasse schon ganz gut aber muss garnicht

Is This Someone's Favorite Album? Yes. That person is definitely Canadian.

Wanted to like this more, but idk. Rush is one of those bands where if you give me their greatest hits, I’ll take it! But for a full album, it doesn’t strike me. Loved the song Lessons, and I think if the intro track were broken into separate songs, it may be more digestible. Love the concept of the album and the inspiration from Ayn Rand. But a lot of these songs just didn’t make me want to revisit them.

Def have heard in a car ride with my dad - not a bad listen but not the best

That was an ordeal. Rock music? Yup - good. Canadian? Yup - good. Screeching voice for half an hour. Nope - an ordeal. I appreciate that Rush are accomplished musicians, but I don't like the things they accomplish.

fell asleep near the end

I don't hate it, just don't see what all the fuss is about.

boring

sounds like a rock opera, didn’t finish. what i imagine bob was listening to in the laser show

Ei nyt oikee irtoo.

I've heard great things about Rush, but there is no way people were talking about this album. It's fine but is not nearly as good as I was expecting. It feels like the nerdy kid decided to write a prog album. There is a lot of other prog-rock I would listen to instead. Best Songs: The Twilight Zone Worst Songs: A Passage To Bangkok, Something For Nothing

Ok 2/5

I feel like I should have liked it more, but it was just fine for me. I like my prog rock less noisy.

I like a lot of Rush. This album. . .I don't understand. . .

Couldn't do it lol

Too long

I get the appeal for some people but its not for me

Lyrics written by a small child. Sounds like a parody of wigout guitar music. Almost spinal tap in places

They’ve done something different. It’s not good.

Not really for me.

Rush is Rush, you know? Like, there is a lot going on here, but it's as bit of a mess. It feels like psychedelic rock fan-fic from a writer that has talent but is just so extra. There is clearly an A-side for this album, and the B-side is mostly just some random stuff which is all pretty forgettable. Prog rock is real hit or miss for me and Rush almost never lands, so yeah, it's okay. The cover is cool in concept but the execution is a bit of a mess, kind of like the album! Both are a 2/5 for me.

It was okay, interesting for someone who knows nothing of Rush despite their large reputation.

Oh boy, not a fan but I can appreciate the effort. Plus in these times I cannot say a bad word about Canada. That being written, this was a tough one to swallow.

Hard rocking experimental album but wouldn’t listen to any of the songs on their own.

You like Rush or you don't. Nothing about this album changed my mind.

I'm just not a fan of Rush, and I thought that having the first side of the album one song was annoying. Rush is like Jazz. I can appreciate the musicianship, and just not enjoy listening to it.

Snooze once the initial Odyssey is over

Not feeling it

That was really unpleasant. I don't get Rush.

Unhinged to open an album with a 20 minute rock opera, only to follow it up with the “oriental” guitar riff…twice!

some of the dweebiest dweebs to ever do it music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Idk man. Like rush is cool I guess but there is just something so corny about it. The lyrics and vocals really take me out

i still don't like prog but i respect the shred

Boooring.

TWENTY MINUTES

Rushed right past this.

There were enjoyable moments, but overall Rush is just not for me.

20 minute intro was not the vibe

Todays album is only 6 songs :) The first song is 20 minutes long :( It's Rush :) It literally has an Ayn Rand writing credit :(

This is a band i inow of but dont know well (beyond a few tracks). All i hear os people banging on about Neil Pert being the greatest drummer ever and I wonder if he is the non-musicians idea of what a good drummer is and whether i will find him too busy? I guess i am about to find out. Lets go. The opening title track name itself makes me think ‘concept album, only 6 tracks but 40 minutes long, ling tracks, this is going to be hard work’. Nice guitar sound. Annoying timing (i blame the drummmer) and yes he is too busy. Drums are beautifully miked. Recording very even though ive not heard the singer even 3 minutes in tk the first track. Vocals at 4.5 minutes in and boy I have to thank them for inspiring Spinal Tap. The second aong that’s in the first song about 12 minutes in isnt bad. The whateverth song 15 minutes in is back to pure Tap. Not a fan of the bass sound in theis recording - too muddy and in the background. Could be my airpods or itunes shitty compression. Lessons and Something for nothing were OK. The rest lack a bit flow for me. Too many fills, breaks, pauses, etc. good players for sure, just trying to ahow it too much maybe? After this i went to the lastest album on itunes which was 2012 Clockwork Angels. Firat song, Caravan, great. Less stops, starts, 50 tom fills, etc. they’d leaned into grunge and hard rock a bit more than prog, it rocked. So this album, must listen before you die? Two stars for me.

Another Rush album that would be four stars with a different vocalist.

Cuando pense que llevaba casi todo el disco escuchado y entre a ver que iba por la tercera cancion despues de una primera cancion de 20 min, tuve suficiente

This is #day425 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… time to sign off another artist from the list. As unintelligent as it may sound, I can't help but feel prog rock bands like Rush (Yes also comes to mind) are just trying too hard. I think my problem with this band in particular is that I lose focus very quickly and can't follow what's going on. I don't deny their influence, the technicality, and all that; I just can't force myself to like what I'm hearing. This is another 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day426.

I think Rush was a fun band, but Something for Nothing - last song - was the only one I liked. This album didn't do it for me. Glad it was only 39 minutes long.

Never did like Rush for some reason. Too much screaming instead of singing. Music is occasionally ok

I'm just not a big fan of Rush. There's like maybe 10 total songs by Rush that I enjoy, and none of them are on this album.

I like some Rush but this isn't it.

Hated this sorry

I get the musicianship and skill but this is just not my style of rock

Niet aan

eat the frog - 21 minute song to start with... (This wont be self indulgent AT ALL) talented dudes, excellent production. not my thing tho.

It's interesting enough but not really for me

I rounded up because I appreciate ambition in art, but this is not my thing. I think I prefer Rush when they sell out and are more economical.

I like Rush a lot but this album didn’t do it for me. 2

It wasn't bad but not much stood out to me about it. Although it's kind of wild that it was released in 1976, I didn't realize just how long Rush had been around. So they were pretty mold-breaking when they started.

Stopped listening on the second song with the same lyrics about a train ride to bangkok. First song was 20 mins long.

Standard classic prog rock without any popular singles to latch onto.

Grundsätzlich gut, aber zu episch

Yet another artist I have heard zilch about. If I'm to guess, I'm in for another arena rock affair similar to that of Boston's self-titled album. Guess I've nothing else to do but get into this one. Yep. More or less what I was expecting, though there's a surprising psychedelic influence and I must admit that I wasn't ready for those pipsqueak vocals after five minutes of build-up. This isn't really my thing and opening your album with a twenty-minute snoozefest doesn't do much to assuage my doubts but yeah. It's fine. There's a simple pleasure in listening to an album with some punchy guitar hooks and a rocking atmosphere. "The Twilight Zone" has a neat, soaring atmosphere. I enjoy how the guitar riffs jolt life into the piece and transition it between different moods. "Tears" has a great, pensive atmosphere. I dig the acoustic sound, along with how it pairs with the strings during the latter half of the track. Book time. "Biggest cult band in the world". Released during a period of friction for the band. Well received by fans, but garnered a lukewarm response from critics - those albums are always interesting. Wikipedia reveals that this album was the band's commercial breakthrough and ranked second in a Rolling Stone poll for best progressive rock albums. I can't claim to be a prog rock authority and I'm generally one for variety on this list, so I think this is a decent pick. I cosign the inclusion.

Niet mijn ding Het is ook niet te verstaan De gitaren zijn wel vet

Not only have I heard this album before but my last listen was actually very recent, within the last month or so. This is not an album that has ever particularly clicked with me despite multiple listens over the years (I bought, and still have, a CD copy of this album when I was still in school, so at least 15 years ago). I would very loosely, and perhaps incorrectly, group Rush fans in two camps, 2112 Fans and Moving Pictures fans. I would place myself in the Moving Pictures camp, and quite firmly at that. Moving Pictures is a 9.5/10 for me, and sometimes a 10/10 depending on which day you're asking. 2112 on the other hand is somewhere around a 5 or 6/10. So why have I listened to it so often? The 2112 suite is by far the star of the show here, and is conveniently the first track of the album, making it a good place to start. It isn't my favourite piece of music by any means, I've never been a huge fan of this style of songwriting, but I'm the sort of person who takes musicality over lyrics any day of the week, so when it comes to Rush it is usually quite easy to overlook the lyrics that can feel a bit dated, or even worse, cr*nge. The quieter, more story driven movements therefore fall a little bit flat for me, although Discovery does do a good enough job of conveying the plot in itself that I don't necessarily hate it. Soliloquy on the other hand, despite being the payoff to the story (and therefore possibly the entire point for some listeners) does nothing for me sadly. I do readily accept this is a flaw in my preferences rather than a fault with the music itself! The movements that do contain "actual" music are, however, very strong and up there with some of my favourite moments on Moving Pictures. The way it all kicks in again once Presentation starts is always incredibly satisfying, building up intensity through the movement until the explosive payoff of a guitar solo. My favourite movements (as redundant as it feels to separate them from their context in the suite) would be Overture, The Temples of Syrinx (seriously priests, you "hate music" so much yet write tunes this catchy?), Prsentation and Grand Finale. It's a great piece of music overall despite my own issues with it, and that's why I listen to it relatively often for an album I'm not too in love with. Why don't I love it so much, I hear you ask? I just can't really get on with any of the other five tracks, ranging from incredibly average to downright horrible. A Passage to Bangkok never fails to get my blood pumping when that oriental riff kicks in right near the start. That is, get the blood pumping right into my cheeks as I turn bright red from second hand embarassment. And although I just said I'm not a lyrics person, it's too hard to ignore the far-too-on the nose , which nowadays just remind you of "that one guy" everyone knows who make smoking weed their whole personality and constantly drop little references like 420 everywhere. Again maybe this is just me but as this is an entire song rather than a whole suite, I can't forgive it like I forgive 2112. The Twilight Zone has my least favourite Geddy Lee vocal (his voice is quite divisive but I usually side with enjoying it), and while the instrumental parts are *fine*, they're quite bland by Rush standards. It's just not one that I ever willingly return to outside of the context of a full album listen. Having said that, it was chosen as an A-side single so what do I know eh? Tears is the worst song for me personally. It's just really not my cup of tea at all, far too sappy/sentimental for me when I primarily go to Rush for their more instrumentally technical songs. I'd get that fill from elsewhere. To end on a less negative note, Lessons and Something for Nothing are two that I would give a pass to - both of these songs actually sound (at least musically) like they could fit into the main 2112 suite, and are at least playable outside of a full album listen (although I can't remember ever actively seeking to listen to these songs on demand). Overall, I really do want to like 2112 as a whole, and I have been trying to do so for a surprisingly long time compared to how quickly I give up on other artists/albums, but the absolute stinkers on here really do drag down my overall score of it. Ironically enough for one of the few albums I have on CD, if I'd waited until I was more into vinyl, I might have had a stronger opinion of this album - all the clankers are on side B so I might have never bothered to listen to them at all! Rating as a 2/5 (but I might have been generous with a 2.5 if we were allowed half-ratings)

Lasted about 5 minutes. Prog seems like a parody nowadays

La intro de 20 min es lo mejor

Not my thing

I've found a lot of albums that I don't mind having on in the background, but I'd never actively seek out listening to it again. This album falls squarely into that category.

Never been a Rush fan. Have heard this album many times, and my opinion did not change after listening to this album in full yet again.

Lots of guitar, drums and high pitch wailing. Spinal Tap.

Something for Nothing was like 6/10, a bit of a bop. Otherwise generic 70s hairmetal, but without bang.

Overlong songs, whether prog rock or avant-garde, annoy me so much. I am not interested in a song that lasts 8+ minutes, except Stairway to Heaven.

Why isn’t the first song divided into the multiple songs within it? I liked one at the mid way point but I have no way of listening to it individually. The rest of it was kinda meh.

Good prog rock

The aliens would love this

I hate the vocals, and the instrumentals, while good, don’t make up for it.

First track awful. Like a kids first recording. Track 2 better, except that awful "oriental" riff which was weirdly out of place. twice.3rd track was dreadful. 4th started well, but from the chorus onwards it sucked. It all sounds like a bunch of kids who have heard a few prog rock albums and thought they'd have a go. It contains a naivety which looks to a lack of understanding of what makes this stuff good. It's full of naff cliche, like the awful section in the first track that had a guitar being tuned bit in it. Ick. But actually it's a signed band's 4th album. I've no idea how this was the one that was successful. I hope their previous albums don't come up to listen to if this was considered the big improvement.

The wiki explanation for the "2112" title track is great! ""2112" tells a story set in the city of Megadon in the year 2112, after an intergalactic war in 2062 forces many of the planets to be ruled by the Solar Federation (symbolized by the Red Star on the cover artwork), where individualism and creativity are outlawed. The population is controlled by a cabal of priests living in the temples of Syrinx, who take orders from giant banks of computers that control all aspects of life ("The Temples of Syrinx"). An unnamed protagonist finds a guitar inside a cave and rediscovers the lost art of music ("Discovery"). Upon playing the guitar to the priests, they destroy it and declare music a waste of time and against the computers' plan ("Presentation"). In a dream, an oracle shows him a planet established simultaneously with the Solar Federation, where an elder race flourish in creativity and individuality ("Oracle: The Dream"). He awakens, depressed that music is part of such a society that he can never be part of and kills himself ("Soliloquy"). The song ends with an ambiguous spoken ending: "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation: We have assumed control" ("Grand Finale"). Peart clarified that after the protagonist took his own life, another planetary war begins and the elder race successfully take down the Solar Federation in an ending he described as a "double surprise ... a real Hitchcock killer".

Not a fan of that dude's voice. 2/5

I HATE the vocals. Good lord. Musically, it's nice. Very meandering/prog, which I'm not too fond of, but they make it work most of the time.

Rock music that may have been popular at time, but it is a little generic. Also, the first song being 20 minutes is ridiculous.

THis album was good, but i am not sure what i was expecting. I think i need to listen again to appreciate it more but it just didn’t grab me like i thought it would.

I felt like I already finished listening to the album and then found out I'm not even close to finishing the first track (was their intention to make you not want to listen to the rest of the album?). after that, the album was nice, the guitars are cool but the vocals area bit annoying.

randian bs aside, i don’t like the vocals at all deserves to be one of the 1001? maybe but i’m cool with just Moving Pictures tbh

Honestly couldn't really tell you what the 20 minute long opening track was about. Musically it's fine. It doesn't really sound super revolutionary - but maybe that's because I'm coming to this later. I will say that I find the lead vocalist's voice super grating which made the second half of the album a much tougher hang.

Rush has a unique flair.. Certain people like the shrill voice very much.. I'm not quite there.

Meh. I'm no Rush fan and this album didn't change anything

one time neil peart came to my high school and played the drums for us. or someone related to neil peart came to my high school and showed us his crazy drum set and told us about how cool neil peart is and donated some band equipment? anyway something neil peart related happened at my high school when i was like 15 and it was interesting enough that i remember it happening but not enough that i actually remember the details, because when i was 15 i was too busy listening to the smiths and oasis and i didn't give a shit about neil peart or rush. i have come to recognize that neil peart was pretty dang talented and also was born in hamilton, so that's cool. but i still don't give a shit about rush.

the little racist motif in "passage to bangkok" made me spit out my coffee.

As with most big name prog rock band I'm sure the musicians are highly skilled technically but this doesn't lead to an engaging or interesting album. Could be for someone else, just not for me. Didn't find any standout song. 2/5.

Not my cup of tea honestly, mad respect to Geddy Lee

Tråkrock. Mest spännande: en som stämmer sin gitarr vid en porlande bäck.

I was largely unimpressed by it.

Well, that’s some weird concept prog rock. Great musicians, super weird

Boring. I was not in the right mood for this. Doubt I will try again, though.

On paper, everything is there for me to like Rush and I keep thinking the day is just around the corner where I'll listen and it all finally clicks for me. But it never does. They feel sterile and distant and uninspired even if technically impressive. Also... Greedy's voice is annnnoyyiinnggg. I tried. I'm sure all try again, too. But man, I was so ready album to be over.

Prog Rock....noooooo!

This is the kind of bloat, self-seriousness, and terrible lyrics that people crave in their prog rock. 1812 Overture riff four minutes into the twenty minutes is a nice touch. Always appreciated how ugly Geddy Lee was. One of us!

Can I tell you a secret … I hate rock operas

Loved it at 16, outgrew it by 18. Good to hear again, but just the once.

Didn’t keep me engaged but did enjoy moments of this, the lyrics and influence of Rand are off putting.

Never been my thing

I haven't listened to this one in forever but even coming back to it especially knowing more about my taste in prog and everything... I just don't feel much for this? Like yeah the music is cool but I think compared to Moving Pictures there was more there that was catchy and interesting than here. Idk I didn't vibe with this one much (And that's without me paying attention to the lyrics which are about an Ayn Rand book....)

I mean. They're technically brilliant, and I like and respect their sound. And while it's their breakthrough album, this one just isn't very good. The only acceptable 20+ minute song is Alice's Restaurant.

threw me a bit off that more than half of the album was the first song. Otherwise solid prog and rock iin general. Not that much replay value to me, but solid. (2.5/5.0)

Die stem ... Een van de meest cheesy albums die ik ooit gehoord heb. Progrock had nooit mogen bestaan. Vooruit, "Lessons" is wel aardig. Twee sterren.

I'm with the priests of the temple of syranix on this one - "it's just a waste of time"

Some decent hard rock but just kinda meh all around, none of the songs really stood out to me except for the stupid chant about the priests in the TWENTY MINUTE opening track. Never understood why bands would mash multiple songs into one track

ehhhhh, not a fan

I know I'm supposed to like Rush, and there are a couple of radio tracks that aren't bad, but this just confirms yet again that I'm not into prog rock.

I confess that Rush triggers me. In the 70s the boys in my high school used their boomboxes to blast Rush in the hallways every day for years. It was like a hostage situation. That high pitched vocal was not my jam. I admit that on this album there is less falsetto, but still.. I do not like Rush!

Is it prog? Is it rock? It’s not a million miles away from Tarkus by ELP, and there is an early Genesis vibe on Tears. It has a very long opening track, which I was expecting to absolutely hate, but didn’t. I don’t love it either. I’m just not fond of the subject matter. And at the 14 minute mark, I was exhausted. The rest of the album is not quite so exhausting but doesn’t do anything particularly remarkable. It covers much the same ground as ELP and Genesis, and sounds more like indulgence than innovation.

h: a passage to bangkok c: tears

This album made me listen to tuning and a stereo typical pentatonic riff to represent Bangkok. It was a different time but I was expecting something less…gratuitous from literal pioneers of progressive rock (perhaps ironically so)

When I say I love Rush I realize that it’s Neil Peart I loved and that I ‘love’ about 10 Rush songs and that’s that. This album not the Rush sound I dig .. musicianship TOP but .. too Styx styley for me

Not my thing.

They got better. The songs. Not the band. They were always kick ass musicians. But the songs got better which even helped reign in Geddy's fractured Plantic shriek. But shed not a tear that falls from eyes - they're gonna be OK once the suburbs take hold.

Not bad for a prog album, the musical doodling has a little more direction, well a little more, lyrical content is .. well if it’s your connection good for you, 1 day think I switched from that heavy metal vocalisations being 'yeah' to downright annoying and now it's only songs that have some nostalgic connection that i can contemplate enjoyment, and thats not Rush. I just don’t enjoy or want to listen to the excesses of prog. not really. 2 Star

Probably been 40 years since I’ve listened to this album. Forty yrs ago I’d probably given it 4 or 5 stars but now it only to get 2 stars. The second side is just not good at all.

Not my fav

goofy. alright musically. ayn rand space opera is probably the dumbest idea I've ever heard.

why is the first song 20 minutes long? yeah, its just giving oldies rock. this is good music for a tailgate. Meh - not excited about this music. Will not listen again.

Rush. Many dismiss them or ignore them. I’m not entirely sure why that is. I like their music……well…….certain songs. This is a decent album.

Sonaba bien pero todo igual, muy repetitivo

It was ok

Not for me. I have heard about this album forever and finally heard it for the first time. Even as a fellow Canadian I just don't get the hype

This album was played on repeat in Randy Van Gelder’s car. Randy used to drive me to high school in 9th grade. His Mazda had custom installed neon lights underneath the seats. While this album brings back a certain nostalgia from those times, it makes me appreciate that I never have to rely on a ride in that car again.

This is the same guitarist from Moving Pictures?? I’m movin’ now! There were nice moments in 2112 and A Passage to Bangkok, but the back half—and Tears especially—was a hard pass.

Its was okay. Not my thang 💋✌

The album you discover in high school that makes you go 'woah, you can do THIS with music?'. Or at least that's how it was introduced to me by my mate's dad who was at home because his licence was suspended for drink driving. By virtue of having 2112 the song in my playlist, I have listened to this album many times. Sort of, I have listened to the second half once and the first half many times. At first, being 15 and the novelty of a 20 minute sci-fi short story song seems really cool. Then you grow up and find out that it's some libertarian/objectivist schlock and it feels a bit grimy. But the instrumentals are still very cool even. I still can't really tell if there are parts of the song I dislike from how many times I have sat through it 'meek shall inherit the earth' line, Geddy Lee's over the top vocals in the part where the protagonist kills himself, whatever. Having said all that, the III. "Discovery" and V. "Oracle: The Dream" parts of the song are banging. The very end of this is kind of cringe though, can't explain it but the last voice-over feels very lame and I always skip the song before it comes on. The only thing I can recall from the second side after a couple of listens from this album is how corny A Passage to Bangkok is. Other than that it's entirely forgettable and I'm unsure if it's because of how the second half lives in the shadow of the first or if it's genuinely boring music (it's probably both). Overall, 2112 is a cool song but AS AN ALBUM this kind of sucks. There's no reason you would own this album instead of just listening to the song on a streaming service unless you were a member of the Ayn Rand fan club/NAMBLA. Highlights: 2112

Wasn’t a huge fan. Talented musicians and fine production, but none of it really resonated.

pretty silly

They got me, I listened to it. I won't be doing it again though

Music immediately no, but… I can’t stop looking at the cover. So two stars for that.

A 70s Prog Rock album inspired by Ayn Rand sci-fi..what could go wrong? I suppose it was somewhat interesting to hear the influence of Zeb and Deep Purple from their albums I had heard earlier in the list - although I wasn't really into where they went with them.

The most exciting thing about this album was discovering it was only 38 minutes long. Listening to it before dying has not made my life any richer in any discernible way. There are so many mediocre 70s rock albums on this list that bring little to the process and this one sits anonymously amongst them l.

not my favorite Rush record.

I listen to it wasn't sure what was going on 3 out ot 10

Why did they do that first track its the pretentious nonsense that makes it so hard to love Rush albums, it has several fantastic potential Ideas for songs but mushed into a mess. All the tracks after that are fantastic tight examples of classic rock and love them, which makes it hard to score as an album.

Okay guitar wankery. Only liked The Twilight Zone

eh, okay

группа РАШ доводит меня до уныния, хоть она и довольно бодрая

I'm not really sure what to rate this. I was close to turning it off within the first few minutes. It gradually got better after that. The last couple of tracks were very repetitive. It gets 2 stars.

Hortera y no me ha parecido muy inspirado. 2

Although it was interesting in the musical arrangement it was not enjoyable though not enough to hate it.

I only knew of Rush as a rock band so the first song on this album being over 20 minutes long took me by surprise. It has a lot of twists and turns and while I don't know what genre they are categorized in I would put this heavily in stoner-rock. Its definitely an album that you have to close your eyes, lean back, and just take in. It was a great ride though. I liked the first song more than the other 5.

No band better fits the idea of “clearly very talented musicians, but not for me” than Rush. If only they made songs I liked.

Not my thing at aaaall

mid. didn’t really make an impression on me

All a bit too Spinal Tap-y for my taste!

Rush! Not my classic rock of choice. (13 known/24 new)

Top tier air guitar album, but Ayn Rand can go fuck herself

é um álbum legal. Mas nenhuma música me chamou a atenção. Acho que esse é um dos albums que teria que assistir o artista tocando live. Tanto que a primeira música e as versões lives foram mais interessante. Gostei de Something For Nothing.

Not my style of music, can still appreciate the musical talent though

The palindromatic 2112 gave me the same feelings as the previous Rush album; really good music with the lead singer way out of his range. Highest I can go is (2.4*s)

Another decent entry from Rush but I'm not fully onboard with Peart's nod to Ayn Rand. I'm all for anti-totalitarianism but these influences feel like a young person's phase and aren't really necessary. The album (and specifically "Overture") standalone as art and don't need all this symbolism to be good. Still, first half is better than the second. I don't love "Passage to Bangkok" but B-side improves a bit afterwards. Downgrading a smidge for the album art which isn't great stylistically but also just doesn't work with the original naked man removed (it's contrasting individuality and the masses so it needs the hero and the Solar Federation Red Star to work). A better album than a concept, I think we've all learned some "Lessons" here, and Rand is certainly no genius. 2.25

I'll give Rush credit for ignoring the critics/management and doubling down on their progressive rock path but this one was no where near as good as Moving Pictures. Side A was kinda cool but I wasn't vibing as much with the instrumentals compared to MP. I found "The Temples of the Syrinx" a bit lame. Side B was a bit better but "A Passage to Bangkok" cheesed it up with the Siamese chimes. "Lessons" lead the pack. I'm not really on board with this album as a must listen before death. Still not terrible...2.112 stars.

I like the build up and the entrance of the heavier instrumentals but lost the way a bit in the end.

First track is 20 minutes and some of it just sounded like they were tuning up. It had already lost me by this point

I will defend Rush's right to make music like this but you can't make me like it

Doesn’t sound inspired to me :(

13th of 1001 albums to hear before I die Rush. 2112. Here we go. I am supposed to like Rush. I’m Canadian. Like rock and metal. Play drums. Yet… I really don’t like them. This old lady I used to work with loves rush. Her son did and she did because of that. She thought I did and would always talk about Shane loving this band so much. However , I do not love this band. Song songs are great. Geddy is a great bassist and Peart is obviously amazing. But I never really liked them or listened to them much. I actually thought 2112 was the same song at the beginning of frizzle fry. But I was wrong. That’s YYZ. Great song but not on this album. I found this one boring tbh. Greatest musicianship. Boring 2/5

I'm not listening to Rush

No thanks. This Rush-album is sorted into the crate of rejects from my dad vinyl collection collecting dust.

This is definitely a high-quality album. I'm just rating based on personal enjoyment, and this just isn't my thing at all.

Meh. I don't care for Rush

I understand Rush's appeal. Extreme musicianship at a time in the mid 70s-80s when that sort of thing was rewarded. For me, however, their music lacks soul. I mean, "Tom Sawyer", sure. "Limelight", ok. "Fly By Night", alright. But beyond that it's gonna be a pass for me. Sorry Rush-heads.

Cool, Not mine

I get that they are technically talented, but it just doesn't sound good to me

*Oh, let me check how far I have progress in the album. ONLY THE FIRST SONG? 20 MINUTES LONG??? BROOOO* Not doing much for me 2/5

There's no need to push 7 songs together to make it 20 minutes long

Dobry prog rock, fun, raczej nie wrócę, chyba, że w piwnicy rodziców oświetlonej blacklightem. Top track: A Passage to Bangkok - smoke weed everyday, eeeee

This can't be the most influential Rush album...

I fucking hate the trope that the POWER OF ROCK AND MUSIC AND INDIVIDUALITY will conquer some oppressive regime. And since these morons are objectivists the regime they’re overthrowing is all about…equality and the meek inheriting the earth. How fucking oppressive?? Stupid. But the music is fun. Rush is better in smaller doses.

Fun vibe, but not something I'd come back to.

That's what I call "hard rock cafe rock". Lame. Boring. Not something that I would love to hear all the time.

Top-notch musicianship of course, and I usually dig prog rock, but....this one went *whoosh* right over my head and I just could not get into the headspace required to enjoy it. I know prog rock is all cheesy, but there is something especially so about Rush and this album in particular that makes me roll my eyes more than usual.

Not my cup of tea.

En mycket svag tvåa.

American rock. Not for me

No matter how hard I try to get into Rush, I just can't.

I’m just not a big Rush guy. After many attempts, live and otherwise

Rock, 1976 -> 2

Rush are a band that I’ve never listened to and tbh I don’t see myself becoming a big fan. I’ve given it a couple of listens and it has grown on a little, so I’ll likely revisit it. However, not entirely convinced it’s a must hear album.

It did not move me, personally

in the year between rush making a very amateurish and full-of-visable-seams (but endearing!) stab at prog, and the oiling up of their prog ideas into a respectable machine (albeit one that has a couple tendencies not to my personal tastes), they put out this weird transitional album that for me lacks the strengths of whats on either side of it but is positioned at just the right point to be inevitably remembered as a classic for people more sold on the band than me. i was determined to force the B-side to make an impression on me but nothin doin i suppose!!!! it takes a couple more records for me to get a lot out of rush's "normal" songwriting abilities,,,i cant quite articulate what doesnt work for me other than continuing fan fiction of bands i dont super like, and a certain structural choppiness thats in a LOT of the band's material (its p much my biggest problem with them) but is less irksome in the context of the big multipart epics. speaking of which the title track's fine lol, but honestly i kinda end up preferring the super rough yet Cute prog attempts on caress of steel. i dont wanna say its not growth, it definitely is, but its growth in just the right space to be less to my tastes. deffo not my favorite band as u can tell lol but they are capable of making great music, i am (very) slowly working thru their discog

The more rock albums this site pushes to me, the more demanding I feel for one of them to stand out

Listened to this yesterday morning and can’t for the life of me remember it. Didn’t hate it.

Singer has an annoying voice, turned me off the album entirely.

Rush is one of those bands that you either make your whole personality or you kinda shrug your shoulders at. I’m shrugging my shoulders. It’s mostly just fine. I think the rock vocals are good, the instrumentation is interesting, but every song sounds the same to me. 2.5/5

Not my jam. Well produced, and the sound is cohesive.

I dont like that kind of music, sorry!

I must admit I don't know Rush. But the sound is very 70s, not so unexpectedly. Probably great if you grew up with them. But not for me.

Like excessively long guitar solos and high pitched voices on your frontmen and a dazzling synthesizer noise mixed in from time to time? This is for you. Not for me.

mehhhhhhhhhh

dgaf 5/10

Excited when it came up then disappointed. Thought I love rush, guess just the hits

I'm sorry, but I'm not about to listen to 20 minutes of overindulgence, get the fuck out of your own ass Rush. A few more acceptable songs after the opener, but I just can't stand his voice, and that's a dealbreaker.

As bland as unsalted potato chips

Go away with your pretentious 20 minutes rock overtures.

Geddy Lee’s voice is an acquired taste, as is the slightly fussy kind of arrangements that Rush deliver – very accomplished, of course, very well executed, but – for me – all heading towards being clever-clever.

Fav: Tears Least Fav: A Passage to Bangkok

88 years earlier, it didn't impress much much at all. Favorite Track: "2112"

Was not bad, just doesn’t know what it wants to be, Kiss or Pink Floyd

rush is always solid. this just didn’t quite hit. could i write poetry to this? n

If you knew me, you'd probably assume I was one of those guys who won't shut the fuck up about how great Rush is. And I probably would be if I didn't hate Geddy Lee's voice.

20 minute medley? No thanks.

I just can’t do Geddy Lee’s voice, but it was less grating on this album. Prog is fine, this just went on for too long with nothing to keep it exciting.

Vocal style doesn't seem to fit the music - the music demands something richer but the vocalist sounds a bit like a folk singer trying to sing to loud

What in the world did I just listen to

I genuinely enjoyed Moving Pictures, but I think it's safe to say I'm not ever going to be a huge Rush fan. Much respect, but this one wasn't for me.

No, Rush...

I don't see what all the fuss is about. "Tears" is very nice.

If the singer never sung, this would have been great. Not a fan of his voice at all.

Not my bag

Was weird: sometimes screechy, sometimes self indulgent, sometimes really pretty, but nothing made me want to listen to it again.

2112 A prog rock comeback album? Sounds so pure, male and navy blue. Who's music is this? Is it corporate or corporal? The first 5 or so minutes of the 20 minute opener are good (if never ending) but in then end it left me so cold, this is more ranting riff than review. How is it so boringly familiar and yet troubling...? Ayn? “Breakfast of champions” music for young aspiring hard right politicians?. ... The insecure kind; who want Authoritarian figures to usher in reassuring economic Feudalism (as late-stage-capitalist fades away in a non-televised denouement). In 2024, we have some real Dr Strangelove-esque leaders rising in many western democracies. And they are jealous of the chief Oligarch. They want the same. Maybe ...This is their music? For fist punching the air. Saluting themselves in the mirror. Before occupying the high ...tower in the sky. Great cherry faux American soundtrack for an opening to a post apocalyptic dystopian dictatorship series. Encore, Non! Je Name pas!

I have to say I took no notice of Rush after reading an interview in either MM or NME in the late 70’s, in which they espoused the writing of Ayn Rand. I listened to this - musically talented, but not big on the vocals.

Lo veo y entiendo, pero namas no me pasa. Chance en otra vida me gustaría. 2/5. La segunda mitad mucho mejor.

title track maybe too long, concept is interesting, wouldn't be against listening to it again but wouldn't go out my way to play it again

Sopivan mittainen rock-ooppera. Aistin tulevaisuudenvisioita?

I didn’t think Rush were too bad when I got one of their albums way back at the start of this journey but maybe that was just a fluke album, or maybe I was more full of optimism and hope for this list of albums. Either way, this one isn’t doing it for me, plus the vocals are even squeakier than I remember so I’m marking off a star for that

Interesting guitars

Hard to care for an album when half the runtime consists of an overlong song with banal storytelling and bland sounds. The second side has some strong songs outside of that - though this seems to run contrary to the consensus - mainly The Twilight Zone, Tears and Something for Nothing.

It's Rush. No more. No less. Not very exciting. You dont need to hear it. No songs about radio towers on this album. At least it didn't give me yet ANOTHER fuckin' Yes album.

I can’t say there’s NEVER been a good 20+ minute track. But…

Rating: 5/10 Meh.

Just couldn't get into it

I'm a fan of prog-rock, but I'm not a fan of this album and can't see what all the fuss is about.

I think if it wasn't for rushes unique voice, rush would not be as big as they are

The meandering weirdness of rush amd geddy lee.

A 20 minute song to start is outrageous. I enjoyed "Twilight Zone" and instrumentally it's decent but kinda bland and the vocals are just not my taste.

Cock rock with extra steps

Good band from the 70’s-80’s. This album not their best stuff. Some nice hits, though.

First 5 minutes: ugh, this is such a slog. Next 15 minutes: wow, this is incredible! “A Passage to Bangkok”: this is pretty good, but that riff is kinda racist, isn’t it? The rest of side 2: ugh, this album just died. When does it end?

Ei ihmeellinen mun makuun. Ihan hyvää soittoa joo

20 minute song right up front? Alright I’m in. I understand why people love Rush and thought this was a good album but I couldn’t pick a song that stood out.

i think i dissociated through this bc all i remember was hitting play, returning to work, and then the beach boys being back on

I think I would have liked "Something For Nothing" if it wasn't after everything else.

*BIAS ALERT * I give the production an “Eh” I give Neal Peart’s drumming an “Eh plus” But otherwise I will never not see Rush and Geddy Lee as silly. 2112 Overture was not over soon enough. One listen to this album is sufficient.

It's a great sound, they're obviously amazing players. I like it when it's on, but when it's finished I don't feel any need to recall it or listen again.

2.5 that 1st song lasted a day and the Ayn Rand lyrics at the end were funny. Freedom isnt free!

Hadn’t heard of any of these tracks, but I didn’t hate it!

Impressive musicianship but doesn’t really do it for me.

Some weird prog/heavy metal sci-fi story about a found guitar and a priest destroying it. Falsetto voices bombastic guitars, it felt very 70's. My buddy said he made a movie about it in high school. I luckily missed this growing up.

The opening track is nothing more than 4 or 5 different songs. I guess the story meant to be told is the connecting parts, but the music wasn't much, especially when you have fade outs and back ins for the next part. Felt like an unnecessary 20+ minute song. The rest of the album was pretty subpar.

What's up with the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he talks like an ordinary guy? Either way, he's corny and Neil Peart can only do so much

Probably listened through about 5 times before. 2x this time. Good album, but not great. Somewhere between 2 and 3 stars, but I'm leaning toward 2.

Objectively, not good. Songs are ridiculous, Geddy Lee’s voice is awful. These guys got better, but without the benefit of knowing that, this album would never see the light of day.

So never liked Rush, singing sounds like screaming

As a proud Canadian, it is my duty to love Rush. I have fault my country. I fucking hate Rush. Rush is like that team of all stars who less than the sun of their parts. The band is unquestionably insanely talented (see Neil Peart) but they go nowhere with it. 4.0/10

Quite enjoyed listening to this. More of a 3 for me, but rounding down because Ayn Rand

# 211 : Can listen to this but it's not real good, had nothing I liked and I even skipped some of that 20 Minute opening track! Nothing stood out and I wouldn't go back to it. What an annoying sound!

That was a lot.
