New to me - punkish? Worth hearing again.

Actually fairly listenable, even if the track names sound like something from AxCx.

Listening to this album was a strange experience. I'll love one song, really dislike a couple then suddenly something amazing happens. I could imagine I would have loved this to death if I had caught it at the right time of my life. As it is there's definitely a few songs on here that could make it into my daily rotation, even if it's unlikely I'll ever play the whole album again. I really didn't know whether to give it a 3 or a 4 but ended up plumping for 4 because there's enough moments in here that I absolutely loved, even if the album made me work for them! Unsatisfied has gone straight into my list of favourite songs ever.

Harmless, classic record. Post punk has always been a meh genre for me, The Replacements.

Very earnest hearland rock, punk. Kind of like a proto Gaslight Anthem to me. I'm not sure how I feel about the jokey songs being here, but it's hard to deny that they're still just as strong. Favorite tracks: "Androgenous", "Answering Machine", "Sixteen Blue", "Unsatisfied"

Androgynous was very good

First track is a mega tune. Thomas was always playing that walk walk in the light ah tune on the bass. I would make the fuck out of track 3. Track 5 is such a banging ballad. vocals are mega impressive this just sounds good. Oh lovely I also know track 7. What a tune. unsatisfied is a bleedin song of a lifetime fuck uyeah. im so im so unsatisfied. what an absolute album chock a block with mega tunes. I am satisfied. what more can you want. the guitar is great. there is so much passion in the vocals of androgynous. sixteen blue might be my favourite song on the album. the alt vocal version performance is maybe even better. structuring isn't incredible. bit of whiplash from Garys got a boner to sixteen blue. unsatisfied goes noticeably well into seen your video though so its forgiven. serious banger of an album.

Not my thing

This was a fun album. If I was a 10 years older I would have been very into this band as a kid. I liked the lyrics, progressive and cheeky. I did not like the vocals though, could not understand anything he said. Luckily I listen to this album with lyrics. Would have scored less if I wasn't paying attention to lyrics.

A classic killer album that hits you quick and easy. Listened to this about 5 times before I knew it. Always excellent.

Only one song I didn't like, but only a few that I did. The rest is good rock and easy listening. Not my speed overall.

Really strong album with a great mix of alt-rock styles. They’ve got plenty of punk riffs and an impish sense of humor. And man, these guys can really unleash some stadium-sized hard rock too (like on “Black Diamond” -- apparently a Kiss cover). But at the heart of it all is strong songwriting. Lead singer Paul Westerberg has some wail! One of those voices that makes me think, “How does he perform like that without hurting himself?”

Cool album cover. Makes me think of late teenage / early 20 years living in the suburbs, growing my hair out, and being rambunctious. I definitely am enjoying the sound of the band. I hesitate to call it punk rock but I think it's like indie rock punk. Good choruses and great guitar riffs that blend subgenres of rock nicely. What a weird slowdown in "We're Comin' Out" right in the middle of a guitar solo. This is really a rare idea and it almost sounds like the guitarist was in the middle of it and then the rest of the band + engineer started slowing down without letting the guitarist know. Pretty cool effect that I liked. The speed up in the ending with more intensity was great too. "Androgynous" is fantastic and not what I expected to hear on the record. Cool track with progressive lyric content. "Unsatisfied" sounds like an evolution of a Bruce Springsteen song (this is a good thing!). Nice album! I will be spinning this one a bit more I think.

Shit, boring, turned it off

Hey, you can't just take an album title from the Beatles! Especially if you sound nothing like them! But really though, this was a good album. I'd never heard of this band before, but I quite like their sound. Catchy, peppy, full of energy. And then they made me cry with 'Androgynous.' Wtf, how dare they. Great album.

Never listened to the replacements before, really enjoyed this, feels like one of those bridge albums between 70’s punk and 90’s alt rock, almost got the full 5 stars, but probably being overly harsh but Gary’s got a boner stops this being a true masterpiece

I like this record, though it tends to be a bit more shambolic than I'd like - it sounds like a band trying out a lot of different sounds, which fits with the Replacements sound on their early albums. But it works as a whole and shows a band that's influenced by everything from punk to bubblegum pop to corporate arena rock to whatever else floated through Paul Westerberg's transom.

My oldest son is a fan of this record and I think that's where it hits, it would be hard to be an 18 year old who is into rock and roll and not get this album. I'm not sure why Stinson could not play the solo on I Will Dare but he rips out his best Ace Frehley on Black Diamond. And on that, sorry but there is nothing cute nor interesting about doing a Kiss cover in the style of Kiss. Westerberg gets kudos for the prescience of Androgynous, lyrically clever and well thought through, tells a story that needed to be told. So for him to even feel the need to write it is brilliant, he's a fine human being. That said, the stand out track is Unsatisfied, that's the one I've just played a few times this morning, a beautiful melody and screaming out for a cover by a great female voice, wonderful song. The rest, c'mon let's be honest there's not much happening there, but then that's kinda ok too, it is one of those records.

A bit hit and miss, to my taste, only the hits aren’t that great either. But very happy to hear that a band like this was singing songs like “Androgyonous” way back in 1984.

Look, this album’s okay, but hardly earth-shattering. I liked the opening track, which featured Peter Buck, & the final track, Answering Machine, which I thought was the most interesting track on the album. I also enjoyed Seen Your Video, which is almost an instrumental. But that was about it. I don’t think the rest of the album was bad - it just seems overrated. Black Diamond, the Kiss cover, was disappointing.

I've tried with the Replacements, I swear to god I've tried. I just don't really love it. Reviews like this one in Consequence of Sound (https://consequence.net/2008/05/album-review-let-it-be-deluxe-edition/) talk about them as "the only band that matters", and this as the greatest album of all time. But I swear, I have seen a hundred bands playing on a Wednesday night at the Sandringham Hotel in the 80s who were this good or better. Is this the emperor's new clothes, or did you really have to be there? I think the over-the-top adulation really makes it hard for me to approach the Replacements without some immediate resentment. The shitty playing and marginal recording don't offend me, but at least half this album is filler: Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, Seen Your Video, Gary's Got a Boner, or Black Diamond (a Kiss cover, god help me) to name a few. Reviews describe I Will Dare or Unsatisfied as the second coming of Jesus Lennon, but I don't see it. They're OK, but, you know, not all that and a bag of chips. The only song on here that did anything for me is Androgynous. I feel like the papers are full of conservatives bashing on gender diverse people, and I found this song an unaffected and moving call for tolerance. This album is 2.5 stars for me, rounding up because of Androgynous.

I still remember a friend lending this to me in the mid 90s. Such perfection on track after track after track.

Pretty good album with a nice mix of styles and very entertaining songs

A classic. Starts out more fun and punk and then Westerberg starts showing of his songwriting chops. Androgynous was way ahead of its time and Unsatisfied (a top 20 song for me) proves that raw emotion and simple lyrics can do wonders. The back end of this album just does not let up. Seen Your Video and Answering Machine are other highlights.

Great. Jumps around a lot but I always love the sound of early alt rock

One of the best bands in the 80s. A bit like R.E.M but with some more grit to it! This record is great and features some very catchy, powerful, anthemic songs! The themes are pretty straight forward and not too cryptic. But that's perfectly fine, and it makes the songs more enjoyable to be honest! The guitars are amazing and the rhythm section is incredibly steady! Favorite lyrics: - How do you say you're okay to an answering machine? - Try and free a slave of ignorance. Try and teach a whore about romance. Key tracks: I Will Dare, Favorite Thing, Androgynous, Unsatisfied, Seen Your Video, Sixteen Blue, Answering Machine. 8,5 out of 10

It was OK. Nothing mind blowing and somewhat forgettable. There wasn't a single song that really catched my interest.

I didn't really like this album. The music was fine, but I didn't enjoy the singing. The themes of the songs were cool, especially Androgynous, but everything else got in the way of me enjoying the album. This is one of my favorite albums of the 80s. The Replacements made a raw, powerful record here. Tracks like Androgynous, Unsatisfied and Sixteen Blue are incredible songs. Very close to being a 5 but had to settle for a 4 star rating.

I had to listen to this one twice before I rated it, and I'm still not sure what to give it. It is at its core pretty good post-punk with some shining moments of great. But it is also a surprisingly socially progressive album that I quite liked. But kinda half zoning out my first listen and then suddenly being bombarded with chants of "Gary's Got A Boner" was shocking. I think it gets a 4 because with that I'm more likely to go back and give it an additional listen.

Wholesome 80s fun

More six form bands. This one's quite good, and I'd have gone to their gigs in the back of a pub until they broke up because the bassist wouldn't stop saying how fit the drummer's mum was and it all got a bit tense. The lead singer probably knew that half their fans only came to gigs because they fancied the drummer AND his mum.

Enjoyed it enough, good to get that post-teenage angst out there!

I think this is a solid album. Really nice balance of catchy riffs and melodies against some post-punk crunch and swagger. I also love that they already viewed in the early/mid-80s that the punk culture was just as prone to snobbery and judgment as any culture. Please know I don't mean to single out punk culture alone; no culture of which I'm aware is immune to it. I used to see a lot of Dead shows, for example, and after a few years, I started to really dislike that same exclusivity that I'm addressing here. Back to the album and music. Superbly composed and arranged, and wonderfully performed. There are some fast and difficult rhythmic and harmonic elements here and I know they are not easy to perform well. I like Paul Westerberg's solo work, too. I had forgotten that Peter Buck plays the guitar solo on "I Will Dare". Very cool.

Well its 80s punkish rock.. i can dig it 3 stars.

I liked the music and the singer was clearly giving it his all but the songs themselves were lyrically boring or repetitive. I feel like this could have been more with better songwriting but I'll round up to a 3 since I generally enjoyed it

I was surprised this was done in the 80s because it sounded very 90s to me. Either way this was fine, I enjoyed listening to it, but I didn’t find it all that special either.

"Let It Be" is the third album by Minneapolis rock band The Replacements and happens to be one of my favorite albums of the 80's. Heck, of any decade. Lead singer/guitarist Paul Westerberg had grown tired of playing noisy and "fake" hardcore rock and wanted to write songs a little more sincere. A one-line description is a post-punk album with coming of age themes. I think that's accurate but The Replacements didn't completely throw away their punk and brattiness and as Pitchfork points out, that's what takes this album to the next level with sincere, more serious songs mixed with loud, brash, harder, less serious songs. The yin and the yang. A whole of album of "Unsatisfied"'s would have been very overwrought. The album was named for the next song they heard on the radio (and to poke fun at their manager, a big Beatles fan). Westerberg said it came close to being named "Let It Bleed." I guess "Gimme Shelter" was the next song they heard. There was a huge critical response then and since being described as "The peak of American indie rock" and "A cornerstone of alternative music." Jangly guitars open "I Will Dare." Catchy guitar and vocal choruses. The Replacements at their pop-rock best. About the band willing to do anything. Guitarist Bob Stinson couldn't come up with a solo so R.E.M.'s Peter Buck did and does the solo. Things speed up on "Favorite Thing" but are still melodic. The rhythm guitar carries this one. I think a love song. Alright we go snotty-'Mats' punk and attitude on the next two songs: "We're Coming Out" is another song about the band taking chances. "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" is, well, about bassist Tommy Stinson getting his tonsils out. True story during one of their tours. Let's go back to the sensitive side of things in "Androgynous." Only piano. Appearance and sexual identity shouldn't matter. An album high point. Why not end with a KISS cover in "Black Diamond." Killer Bob Stinson solo. And then we begin one of the best album sides in rock history. Paul Westerberg had to record "Unsatisfied" away from everyone and facing the wall to get and because of his emotions. An incredible raspy, vocal performance as the music plays with him. Great layered guitars. A song about discontent (with the music industry). I think all of the emo genre is based on this song...for better or worse. "Seen Your Video" is mostly instrumental with great guitar interplay. Obviously, a very anti-music song. And The Replacements backed it up by making very lame videos themselves. Touché. We need one yang song on Side Two and that one is the rockin' "Gary's Got a Boner." "He's got one but not for long." "Sixteen Blue" is about the awkwardness of being sixteen. Hey, I was sixteen when this album came out. Was I awkward? I don't remember. Probably. Hell, what do you mean was? Great, great guitar melody and an absolutely searing Stinson guitar solo fading the song out. Westerberg keeps upping the emotional level and just tears threw it on the closer "Answering Machine." Westerberg on the 12-string as he asks and screams "How can I say I love you to an answering machine." Drums kick in. An operator's voice comes in asking for change. We end in chaos. Wow! It's a shame this is the only Replacements' album in the challenge. Their next two albums "Tim" and "Please to Meet Me" are also brilliant. At that time and after this album, there was a major label bidding war between The Replacements and R.E.M. Well, we know how that ended but emphasizes how highly this album was thought of. It still sounds great and deserves every bit of its many accolades.

Nice album. Gritty and determined all the way through. It wasn't the tenor of my day, but I did enjoy hearing it. First time for me!

Lotta memories associated with this this album and this sound. I was fortunate to have lived a great childhood with some absent parents who in the summer would dump me at the sailing club as race crew for regattas. Those boats were often skippered by older kids, who probably weren't more than 15 or 16 at the time. Greg, nicknamed me 'Tober' because I was quiet. He and Bobby turned me onto girls, shitty beer and music like this album and the Femmes in the late summer evening sun while putting the Thistle's away for the night. The Replacements made even more appearances while I was in high school. Let it Be was viewed as a rebellious slant in my middle-class, conservative suburban Va neighborhood, but more importantly a favorite of my preferred 'ladyfriends' of the days. Wow... those were good days... we didn't know how amazing those times were... and this album gets me right back there. I could get lost in this one ... So good.

I think that I have somehow never heard a Replacements song before. I recognized nothing on this album, or any of their other top hits. But I know the name, and even know a bit of singer Paul Westerberg's solo work from his songs on the soundtrack of the movie "Singles." So who are the Replacements? And who were they replacing? Oh, it was Westerberg who did the replacing, by convincing the bands' original singer he was going to be fired, goading him into quitting, then taking the reins and renaming the band!? Well, damn. And I see that the band name itself was a replacement, a definite upgrade from Dogbreath and apparently a necessary rebranding after being banned from a venue they played for disorderly behavior. I'm glad to now know Paul Westerberg and The Replacements better. But I feel like they are constantly replacing and reinventing their sound, sticking to punk and hardcore in their early years. Their attempt on "Let It Be" to move away from that sound led them in lots of different directions, as you can hear on the albums. There's a lot of variation in genre here, which makes the band hard to get comfortable with. Who needs to be comfortable, though? The Replacements also challenged people to be uncomfortable in 1984 with the song "Androgynous," which stood out the most on "Let It Be." After a 2022 filled with debates about transgender rights and drag shows, this song's tolerance reminds us that there have been allies as long as there have been non-conforming people. It also served as a reminder that 1970s and 80s rock music was filled with challenges to gender conformity. While Westerberg sang "Tomorrow who's gonna fuss," we are still waiting for the day the last vestiges of that fussing fades away. As I read about "Androgynous," I realized I had heard a Replacements song before. A couple years ago I heard a cover of "Androgynous" (not realizing who wrote it) in a live backyard session by Joan Jett, Miley Cyrus, and Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! Check it out, and while you're at it, dive even deeper with Against Me!'s "Transgender Dysphoria Blues."

Probably would have been a 3 but damn if Androgynous wasn't super ahead of its time.

At times the music is cohesively poor. It’s as if the recording engineer captured warm up randomness and somehow spliced it into the album. It’s a real turn off. We’re Coming Out is an example, and I don’t care for Gary’s Boner. Somehow, I’m not surprised that Ted Nugent co-wrote Gary’s Boner. Upon a second listen, I realized there were fewer of these moments than I took away from the first listen. Black Diamond is my favorite song on the album. Sixteen Blue is a close second.

Standout tracks for me are Answering Machine and Unsatisfied. Androgynous is a well known hit. Overall the album is charming enough.

On first listen this came across as sloppy and unexceptional, but a second listen revealed more of its charms. I think I prefer their more thoughtful tracks, overall. Fave track - "Answering Machine" is the standout, but "Unsatisfied" and "I Will Dare" are both good too...

It's so weird how this record swings back and forth between new wave and punk. I like it, but always have trouble with this eras production. The drums and guitars just seem so skinny.

Not familiar with the replacements at all, but I feel like this album was a good introduction. Solid 80s rock with lyrics that in some ways feel a little ahead of their time especially on songs like androgynous and sixteen blue.

Heavily recommend the No Dogs in Space episode on the boys. Really helps me appreciate the edge and roughness of their music. They have such a genuine approach to creation that shows a bit of their wildness. Just a great, palpable energy flowing through the album. Hearing the band enjoying themselves so much, while also tacking some subjects with emotional depth due to Paul Westerberg’s writing creates such a great experience. Faves: Sixteen Blue, Black Diamond, Unsatisfied, Androgynous, I Will Dare, We’re Comin Out

I like the feel and the singer’s voice. Just wanted it to be a bit better. I suppose I was craving more memorable hooks.

I think the idea of "Androgynous" is really cool, especially for 1984, so it really sucks that I don't like it from a musical perspective. Actually, most of this album is full of "cool ideas" that just don't work on my ears, so I'll leave it at that - 2/5 not for me. Is this truly post-punk though? Seems like just regular punk to me.

Never really heard of them before, now I'm not sure how! Sound like an Australian clash-influenced proto-nirvana - I was astounded to find they were from the USA. Really enjoyed it, and was nice to see what the rock kids were listening to when the pop and indie kids were in charge of the charts. Definitely going to listen to more of their stuff, and read more about them too. Wonderful 5 🌟

I suspect this is heresy, but Unsatisfied was an immediate dud. Yet the lap steel saves the track with underground guitar work, present in varied form all over the rest of the LP (sadly not again as steel). Guitar work is a mixed blessing. Seems seminal, sincere, but not personally essential this year.

Catchy energetic post punk. Will listen again

I’ve certainly heard of The Replacements, but I’m not sure if I’ve actually listen to their music before. I’m very familiar with the song Androgynous, but that is due to the Joan Jett cover. I’m excited to hear the origin of this song, as well as the rest of the album! Songs I already knew: Androgynous (but not this version) Favourites: Androgynous, Unsatisfied, Gary’s Got A Boner Firstly, Androgynous sounds very different here to what I’m used to. It’s much more stripped back and minimalistic, and it works really well. If you aren’t familiar with this song, it’s all about breaking gender norms and just being who you want to be rather than what society dictates you should be. There is a great variety of songs to be found here, as we also have the tongue in cheek punk rock track Gary’s Got A Boner which is great fun. Overall, a very good punk album and an easy recommend to anybody that enjoys the genre.

I very nearly loved this. Tight band, singer has a great voice and there are *nearly" some great tunes. I think if I'd discovered this in the early 2000s when The Strokes etc were big it would be part of my canon. As it is only really good because the melodies just aren't quite there. Checked this by listening to Is This It after which I'm sure is a better album.

Pretty good coming of age teen rock album. Enjoyed Androgynous, which I thought was particularly prescient for the mid 1980s. I wish we'd travelled farther since then!

Absolutely a great band, i started listening the them in the early 80s watching and listening to them mature into a more melodic band. Not one of my favorite albums of the band but far from their worse. This band still rates high in my book

I've loved this album for quite a few years now. It has great variety, is funny, delightfully messy, and is brimming with creativity and talent. It's influence is very obvious when you look at the rest of the 80s and 90s alternative scene - very ahead of its time! "I Will Dare" and "Unsatisfied" are obvious gems, "Androgenous" is fantastic as well and often brings a tear to my eye. I love the cover of "Black Diamond" too, but I don't think I've ever thought to look up the original. Overall a great album, possibly one of my favourites of the 80s.

To the band's credit, the mundane and uninspiring nature of this album is explained by the band's name. Yet another album that doesn't belong here.

This was fun, snotty pop punk. Good variety throughout too keep things interesting, guitar was on point and vocals were great. This album was dumb in a good way, super creative and witty. Excited to listen to more of their work. 4 stars!

Solid record which really takes flight when The Replacements go from the more punky songs to the more posty-punky ones. The trio of 'Androgynous', 'Black Diamond' and 'Unsatisfied' smack in the middle of the album is clearly the peak.

This is basically all I want from my alternative rock/punk record. To the point, without any real filler and just filled with energy and great musicianship. The only time I almost lose interest is when the band focus too hard on their punk roots on “Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out” and “Gary’s Got a Boner”. Other than that I really enjoy Westerberg’s vocals and the first trio of songs, ending with the amazing “We’re Coming Out”, and the middle section with “Androgynous”, the great Kiss cover “Black Diamond” and “Unsatisfied” is unbelievably good.

I loved the album, a lot of genres mixed together, it was a total blast, the whole album was a roller-coaster, from punk, thrash to sort of power ballads and more 80's type rock it had everything that I didn't knew I could want in an album I hadn't heard anything from The Replacements before and I think I'm going to go and listen to more of them

These guys may have been cutting edge in the 80s, but by today's standards, this feels way behind the curve.

I jumped up and down to "Favorite Thing", I laughed to "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", I cried to "Black Diamond", I rubbed one out to "Gary's Got a Boner". I give this album three teenage emotional roller-coaster rides out of five. 🎢🎢🎢

Pretty enjoyable punk rock. Interesting to hear different influences in it. Sounds like there's inspiration from 60s-70s rock and even 80s metal kind of sounds. A fun listen and interesting lyrics as well

I was a Replacements fan from their first release. Let It Be may be their best. The sloppiness of their early work is gone. The over production of later releases isn't present. Just the Mats playing great tunes from start to finish. I Will Dare is a perfect start. There is humor (Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out and Gary's Got a Boner). Some great covers. (Black Diamond). Even Paul Westerberg playing Androgynous on the piano works. It is an understated classic, but a classic, nonetheless.

The Replacements, although critically acclaimed, never got the mass appreciation that they deserved in my opinion. This is a great album that moves between post-punk and power pop. Paul Westerberg was (and still is) a brilliant songwriter. His lyrics are insightful, witty, sarcastic and satirical. Read the lyrics to Androgynous -- he wrote this almost 40 years ago! Pretty incredible. Yes, some of the songs are a bit silly, but so what? It's great rock and roll. This band didn't last nearly long enough.

Sounds like the clash, Black flag, and Lou reed all fused into one. Not my personal preference but clearly a good album with amusing lyrics and emotional highs and lows. I’ll probably never listen again but I could see why someone else would.

probably a precursor to lots of music I do like but don’t really care for it all that much

Young garage band sound. Rather noisy. I think they have talent, but lack the skills. Music schooling would benefit them, if I may.

Been a long time since I listened to this gem. Punk, pop and rock, come the 90's this sound went mainstream, but when this released it was groundbreaking.

As a big fan of Stink, Sorry Ma, and Hootenanny it took a couple listens to “get” a lot of this record. Later, I remember one time sitting in my car listening to the tape start to finish and when Answering Machine ended just sitting quietly for a bit. This record is just exceptional. Punk adjacents, hard rockers, pathos laden feelies, boozy party kickers,… it’s all here. They were playing with a tight ease and a sense of barely contained chaos. And Answering Machine has one of my favorite guitar riffs on repeat that I have never tired of. Even after almost 40 years.

This is one of my favorite albums.

Early post-punk indie rock. Fairly diverse, faster paced but also slower tempo tracks. Standout is "I Will Dare".

A pretty impressive album from a band I’ve never listened to before. There was a wide range of punk and rock sounds on this album. The styles felt like 80s punk some 90s and 00s alternative as well. I thought it was pretty impressive given they made this in the 80s. Some of their songs were retry insightful for the 80s as well. 7.4/10

Lead off tracks sounded alot like the Beatles. Would have been too much like them for 1984. Not shabby

Another one of those bands whose name I know and who have a few songs that I'm familiar with but don't really know them all that well. I enjoyed this. Went back and listened to their earlier, more punk stuff. As much as I think I prefer that, it shows how, on this record, the band is growing trying new things, stylistically.

Not my favourite Replacements album, but still damn good. It is a little too heavy at points. Is this The Replacements heavy metal album? Though nothing as classic as Left of the Dial still some classic tracks here; Waitress in the Sky, Unsatisfied, I Willl Dare, Androgonous, Answering machine. 4.5 stars

A mostly great album with some skippable songs. Androgynous is a necessary song for all music lovers. Maybe a few more listens would warrant a higher score but not at the moment.

So many other 'Mats records could/should be in this list but this is completely worthy candidate. A sometimes great, sometimes indifferent band that is perhaps the essential '80s indie rock band – “Unsatisfied” and, “I Will Dare” “Androgynous,” “Seen Your Video” “Sixteen Blue” and “Answering Machine” all very strong, too.

Great album from a great band - might be the best 80s album in the list (which in an ideal world should contain a couple of more albums of the Replacements)

Great album by a band I was not familiar with! It makes me want to learn more about the Replacements for sure. Punk rock is definitely the genre I would put them in (hard to deny that), but this album definitely leans more into indie rock with a bit of Springsteen thrown in there. I have a feeling that if I went back and listened to their work prior to this record that it would be more raw/unhinged like the Sex Pistols or the Clash; while that feeling was present in both the vocals and the instruments, it felt overall more mature and grounded than what I would expect out of a band like this (except for 'Gary's Got a Boner' which contrasted with most of the other songs on the album). The singer's voice reminded me a lot of a young Gene Simmons, but he was easier to take seriously. This connection I made seemed much weirder when I got to the 'Black Diamond' cover on this album; I actually feel that this cover is much stronger than the original KISS version which I have never been the biggest fan of. I was a fan of all of the tracks, but the opener and 'Androgynous' were two of the standouts. 'Androgynous' was VERY progressive for 1984, and I can see why it would be the highest streamed song off of this album for this reason. Overall, I definitely enjoyed this record and could see myself coming back to it in the future. 4/5. NOTE: They should've picked a different album name for sure as 1) it doesn't really fit any of the core themes of the album and 2) it could get easily confused with the late record by The Beatles. Maybe they picked this title ironically? Who knows.

When I received this album Friday morning, I thought: ok, it's some ugly brother of THE "Let it Be." I was not wrong, and this was awesome. A great piece of late punk songs (post-punk, according to Wikipedia) that made me feel like it was in the 80s. Much rawer than its shine brother album and enjoyable as hell. I'll keep an eye on other albums from "The Replacements." 4 stars

cool rock album

The Replacements – Let It Be Nice guitar in parts. Don’t really like vocals. Many tracks are repetitive. Some tracks e.g. Black Diamond have some genuine emotion and cool riffs. The softer/acoustic parts have some solid artistry. Also, Androgynous is non-binary love song from 1984, so that’s interesting, I guess. Decent variety of tone, themes, and musical style, but there’s not a lot I like. Top Tracks: - Black Diamond – Great riff and some genuine emotion. Only part I dislike is the anticlimactic end.

You know when you have a song saved on your playlist but you don’t even know who sings it? That was me with Within Your Reach. That was off the Hootenanny album, never heard anything off this album before today. The stripped down sound of an early 80s punk 4-piece band really makes me yearn for a decade I never experienced. It sounds a bit boring now, but I’m sure it sounded absolutely mind-boggling back then. I wish I wasn’t desensitized and used to big production music done by computers. This album truly makes me want to spike my hair and walk around in a ripped jean jacket and Converse on the streets of New York smoking a cigarette and flipping off policemen. I’m learning from this project that often the bands that influenced the sound or created it aren’t as widely recognized or remembered as the bands who perfected it. This is one of those times. If I were a teenager in 1984, this would be on my record player every night as I laid on the floor of my bedroom hating my parents. My favorites: I Will Dare, We’re Coming Out, Black Diamond, Answering Machine

Average semi-punk, reminded me of Eddie & The Hot Rods. Not my scene, man.

New one for me but a great post punk Album. I really liked its Dynamism, and the pure energy of this post punk power-pop classic. Has a touch of Elvis Costello and the attractions about it. loved "I Will Dare" (Great Bass-line) the Knack-like "Favourite Thing" The plaintive "Unsatisfied" and the Humorous "Gary's Got A Boner" are all quality tunes. A nice new experience for this listener and I will definitely look out for more Replacements stuff to add to my collection.

It was okay.

This album is embedded in my DNA. Loved it from the moment I first heard I Will Dare, then the CD lived in my car CD player on repeat for months. They had moments of greatness after this, but this album is their finest moment.

I found this album to be pretty mediocre, not necessarily bad but pretty repetitive and unoriginal. However, fans of punkish rock might appreciate it.

It's pleasant- I can appreciate what they've tried but don't see what's so groundbreaking about this? When I think of the albums that have missed out because their 'Genre-quota' of 25 albums was full I realise what's wrong with the album selection of the 1001.

Such a great album. I don’t know if they invented these different genres of punk but to hear metal ballads, hardcore punk, folk punk and a wide variety of styles while still solely still being the replacements is awesome. They were the pioneers of bands who had a style but would change it up and didn’t give a fuck what people think. 5/5 buying this asap.

Good classic rock sound with a punk edge. Vocals aren't always good, whether that's on purpose, being drunk, or due to not caring I'm not sure. It sounds like the singer is destroying his voice every time he goes up high.

Fun pop punk. I had no clue that Androgynous was originally on this album and that the Joan Jett version was a cover.

This is such a funny album. Having a coming of age theme, with very real kind of experiences in the lyrics. I mean, who makes a song like Garys got a boner? Although this particular type of 80's punk isn't my cup of tea, you gotta appreciate how they break the "traditional" punk style.

I have absolutely no memory of what kind of music this was. Listening to some of it again (to refresh my memory of yesterday's forgotten run through) I find myself wonder why it was included. It's fairly uninspired rock and roll. Bizarre.

The Replacements are fine to me

There's a They Might Be Giants song called "We're the Replacements" that is, I think, better than this whole album. But these boys are just here having fun and playing their music with the guitar loud. Can't hate on 'em.

I bought this album after reading about it in Spin magazine, probably in part because it had the song "Gary's Got a Boner" on it, which sounded intriguing. It's the only Mats album I ever owned because money was tight, but listening to it on Tidal Master after all these years, the nuances stand out. The mandolin on I Will Dare, the solo from Peter Buck, and the obvious allusion to I Will Follow. The hardcore speed of We're Comin' Out and the thrashy solo with the accelerando finger snaps and piano. Androgynous, which is so prescient of the present moment with the classic verse: "Don't get him wrong and don't get him mad He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad And she don't need advice that'll center her She's happy with the way she looks, she's happy with her gender." Black Diamond is their Kiss cover, which is an interesting choice at this point in the 80s. Next up is Unsatisfied which resonates with almost any relationship. Seen Your Video with its disdain of MTV anticipates their video for Bastards of the Young. Gary's Got a Boner is a great piece of punk rock raunch with coining the phrase a "soft-on." Sixteen Blue is a great song about sexual identity and the end of adolescence. Finally, it's a shame that Answering Machine no longer has the same poignancy that it had back in the 80s when answering machines were dominant. How do you top these lyrics? "How do you say I miss you to an answering machine? How do you say good night to an answering machine? How do you say I'm lonely to an answering machine?" Voice mail just doesn't cut it with the eager anticipation of seeing the blinking light on your answering machine and the bittersweet disappointment when there are no calls. In the outtakes from the expanded version, Westerberg shows that he can do wistful and longing but not sexy in the cover of 20th Century Boy. Perfectly Lethal is about the banality of TV pre-cable and drugs

So I quite liked it even though I've not really found a lot of the post-punk stuff from that era to my tastes, I can certainly hear influences from acts I like that have come along since, probably gonna sit at a nice 3.

A comfortable 3, pushing a 4. Really strong, consistent album with some solid tracks right the way through (and a couple of less good ones like the one about Gary's Boner!). But, there's nothing there that elevates it to the level above, nothing that  which is why it stays at a 3.  Could do with sanding off the rough edges a little, but did enjoy listening to it.

A solid punk album that took us on a journey through the funny awkwardness of adolescence coming into adulthood. Best: Unsatisfied Worst: Sixteen Blue Note: Spotify had an extended version album however I only listened to the original 11 tracks.

Its a not bad slice of early punk

A case can be made that few, if any, ‘80s band are truer to the core essence – the raw soul – of rock and roll than the ‘Mats. That’s true both in spirit and execution. There’s skiffle and punk and early rave up in it. Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Hamburg Beatles, early Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis – all of these would have endorsed what Westerburg & co. were up to. “Unsatisfied” is an all-time personal fave, “I Will Dare” a great opener, and “Androgynous,” “Seen Your Video” “Sixteen Blue” and “Answering Machine” very good, too. Westerburg could be RnR HoF for songwriting reasons alone, and the band in the antics division. There were more very strong (and more polished) records to come, a few of which could easily be in this list.

Enjoyed it. Nice and short and definitely dealt with topics very much ahead of the time.

A few riffs that got me going, but the vocalist is awful

Never really listened to this band. Love the record title. Who gives a shit if the Beatles did it already? That's a statement. This record has a lot of charm. When I first started listening, I thought it was just sloppy early 90s music. Then, I realized its deceptively-proficient early 80s music with a singer that blends Springsteen, Petty and Cobain (not yet a glimmer in popular music's eye), into a really compelling front person.

This seems like a pretty typical alt/punk album. I'm not sure what makes it special, but I enjoyed most of it. This is the stuff I loved growing up, so my enjoyment of it was probably more nostalgia than anything.

A mix of soft punk and soft rock and something in between. Not easy listening.

I took a short break when this came up, mainly because I got a bit ill. Mind, I was also wondering what I wanted to say about this album. This album really did require several listens for me to comprehend my thoughts fully, but it turned out my opinion is not as effusive as the critical standard for Let It Be. This is not to slam the album. Much on the album to like, indeed love, and it's a firm 4-starrer. But US college rock has never seduced me. I can accept R.E.M. did a few worthwhile albums in the 80s, but I'm not going to cream my jeans over every song they produced then. And The Replacements have a similar fault to R.E.M.: they are just a bit too clever-clever, rather than just clever. The title, on its own, stands right on the boundary of inspired and smug. The wilfully puerile Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out and Gary's Got a Boner, likewise, straddle that boundary with a nut on each side. But these and others, in aggregate, make the album a tiny bit irritating. Also, ask yourself this: can you sincerely, hand on heart, give 5 stars to an album that gives a songwriting credit to Ted Nugent?

Not the 'Let It Be' I expected the generator to throw up. It was ok but nothing special. I think it says a lot about the state of rock music in the 80s if this is considered to be one of the decade's best albums.

This sounds like an album I’ll love in time but I can’t give that verdict in just one day so I’ll give it a neutral 3. It’s like a snotty less classy clash but with a lot of bite and layers.

This is the band that knows the simple joys involved with hanging around long enough for Last Call. Nothing quite beats People Watching, and the Mats might have invented it. Why go home when Gary's popped himself a boner and all that's waiting for you is an answering machine? And besides, Tommy's worried about having his tonsils removed. Bonus points for the Peter Buck guitar solo on "I Will Dare" and a great Kiss cover. Ride for the Deluxe edition to enjoy more covers.

i thought it was alright but the singing bothered me after awhile and i just didn’t like it but i didn’t not like it so it was just eh

Replacements are a bridge band for me - I don't like punk but can appreciate a ton of the energy and the bands that flirt with that aesthetic (of course like the Replacements, Clash, early Goo Goo Dolls). So the best songs here are super catchy and fun and yeah holy cow listen to Goo Goo Dolls Hold Me Up and Superstar Car Wash and you can hear the strong Replacements influence. The best songs. First two are great - "I Will Dare" and "Favourite Thing" but then comes "We're Comin' Out" - the first 90 seconds of that are unlistenable. Noise/shit with no emphasis on even basic songwriting - I strongly dislike this. So much back and forth on this damn album - track 5 "Androgynous" is a cool piano ballad out of left field that even with its low-fi feel (usually an immediate skip for me) has a nice back-of-the-barroom sound to it. Probably need to note somewhere in here (uh...here) that Paul Westerberg's voice sometimes is like listening to Drano. I think I'm a Replacements greatest hits kinda fan; I hear a lot of great things on this album but a *lot* of hit and miss. Too much for me to have this album as a keeper but the best have the common thread of a great melody - more of that please. 6/10 3 stars.

One of the great "I'm an angry white American young man" albums out there. "I Will Dare", "Unsatisfied", "Androgynous" and "Answering Machine" are absolute classics, but the whole album is great. It was also ahead of its time both for the lyrics and the music. Grunge bands obviously took notes from The Replacements. I could go on for hours about that album, a real gem.

Good album with nice riffs and rythms. I did not get a boner like Gary, but I might have enjoyed it enough to return to it again someday.

Unfortunately, I did not know this group and it was missing in my musical knowledges. I found The Replacements to have a phenomenal energy, they are punchy and quirky while maintaining a very standard formula for a rock band. I loved it.

The replacements are a bit like that TV show with the young snotty boys looking for relationships in all the wrong ways, I think it was The Inbetweeners. Interesting at first

I'm being a bit generous here because I really want to like the Replacements more than I think I do. A bit gruff and ready for me.

I'm not a *huge* fan of this band, but *Let It Be* is the perfect midway point in their story, between their early hardcore punk shenanigans and their more pop-sounding rockers (without too much cheese here). And like someone else pointed out in the group, a song like Androgynous has lyrics that are still on point decades later (not to mention its atmosphere). A great example of what sorts of wonders adolescent angst can do in music. I would also add the punk band... Adolescents to that category, with their eponymous album. That one is *criminally* overlooked in this list (and many other ones like that !)... I know I've heard the Replacements before, but I don't know what. I like the Crash Test Dummies' cover of "Androgynous" and the version of that track on this album is good too. Some of the tracks were too noisy and musically incoherent. Most of the tracks were fighting to reach the okay level. I just don't think I can round up to 3 stars. I did not hate the album, but 8 out of 12 tracks got less than 3 stars.

Not my favourite Replacements album but still really good. Love the Kiss cover. Androgynous and Unsatisfied are classics all in a a very enjoyable album 4 🌟

Mediocre punk with a couple bangers mixed in.

This album is that transition through your twenties from rebel punk to something more akin to a self-aware adult. There's plenty of playfulness in the lyrics that show adolescences isn't all angst. It is weird and something comes of it. The album also has enough changes in musical elements to feel whole and interesting. Enjoyed it overall.

With one foot out the punk door and one foot in what would become the alternative scene, The Replacements provided a template for what would happen when a band gets captured not in the throes of dissolution but in the moment where things begin to look up. 33 minutes of pendulum swinging punk ferocity and pensive perspective that's rightly regarded as one of the best examples of 80s rock. Favorites: I Will Dare, Androgynous, Black Diamond, Unsatisfied, Seen Your Video, Sixteen Blue.

Pretty ok, didn't light my fire

It took some months to appreciate it, but Let It Be is a perfect album. Its songs grew on me after each listen and it is now part of my playlist. The rhythm in I will dare is perfect -I think that Peter B from REM played the solo- other songs like Androgynous, Answer Machine, are also bangers. The Replacements are a special band, indeed. A group of intriguing people with whom you’d like to suffer and laugh with.

Listened to it and already forgot about it.

I've heard of, but never really sat down and listened to, The Replacements. The album cover looks like we'll be getting unpretentious working class rock and roll. Looking at the track list, 17 songs, goodness. Oh wait, no, I got an expanded version. There's only 11 songs really. Whew. Giving it a listen I hear reasonably simple listenable arrangements, high energy level in places quite punky, emotional some silliness plenty of angst, somewhat rough overall. I think I would have liked them a lot when I was younger, too bad I didn't discover them then. Favorites: We're Comin' Out, Androgynous.

One of my favorite 80's albums ever. So many great tracks on here. Funny, because I listened to this album again the day before this popped up.

I so wanted to be a Replacements fan. But I just don't see the attraction. Average songs, annoying vocals, minimal musical talent displayed. How this album got highly ranked by Spin and Rolling Stone magazines I will never understand. Highlights: Cover of T-Rex's "20th Century Boy", cover of Grass Roots "Temptation Eyes". Says a lot when best songs are covers. D+

THIS IS SO PUNK ROCK

Genre: Alternative Rock 4/5 Upon receiving yet another 80s alt rock album, I was in a rather sour mood going into this, praying that it was anything other than what I've been given so far in this exercise. To my surprise, this was a very enjoyable album, that certainly goes beyond just a standard alt rock label. This album has quite the variety. Songs like We're Comin' Out pack a hell of a punch and include some really outrageous solo work, songs like Black Diamond which have guitar tones that sound like they were ripped from albums of the future, and songs like Sixteen Blue which is so proto-Nirvana it's scary. This album kept me entertained the entire way through. They'd throw you a ballad, then go ahead and sing Gary's Got a Boner. Not a perfect album, but a surprisingly enjoyable listen, and one I'll certainly come back to in the future.

This album defies genre. It opens with new wave, and progresses through tinges of punk, hardcore, and even crosses over into power ballad territory. This album has been immensely influential and it is rightfully seen as one of the greatest albums of the 80s

I don't hate this. I also don't love this. All the songs are nice and up tempo but they're all very similar in their energy and there isn't really anything going on that peaks my interest. Solid meh from me.
