It's fine. Another one for the first column but not one i'll be going back to
Favorite track: Androgynous
Sounds cool, not forced, effortless. I hear some Nirvana in it (‘Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out’). I should rather say hear some of them in Nirvanas music. I like the attitude. Great riffs, nice piano in ‘Androgynous’. Good balance of energy levels and noisy vs. melodic passages. At the end of a phrase they often land on strange, disharmonic notes/chords (as in ‘Seen Your Video’). I hear some of Radioheads ‘Creep’ in 'Sixteen Blue'. Also, they are giving me a bit of the Kooks vibes. They either have been part of a larger movement or were influential for a generation of artists.
I had never heard this album before and enjoyed it. The wife didn't run away screaming either.
Nothing grabbed me
I liked this one ok, some catchy riffs on I Will Dare and Unsatisfied.
This album really helped me define the line where punk goes from good to not good for me. I enjoyed probably 50% and disliked the other 50%.
Ok
Qué puede ofrecer un disco para destacar entre los debuts de The Smiths, Dead Can Dance, Run-DMC, Nick Cave, LLoyd Cole and the Commotions, The Style Council y clásicos instantáneos como Purple Rain, Ocean Rain, Born in USA, 1984, Recknoning, Learning to Crawl, Ride the Lightning, Like a Virgin, Zen Arcade, Knife, Diamond Life... o Deseo Carnal y Make it Big?
Makes you really feel like an angsty punk. 5/10
Have a lot of respect for PW and the band. I found it a song-by-song experience. Loved some tracks, but not a fan of others.
C+ I Will Dare 3 Favorite Thing 3 We're Comin' Out 3 Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out 3 Androgynous 3 Black Diamond 3 Unsatisfied 3 Seen Your Video 3 Gary's Got A Boner 2 Sixteen Blue 3 Answering Machine 3 I dated a girl who recommended this album to me. I never understood why.
Amateurs. Some great high points, but also so many bad notes, bad timings, and pitchy harmonies. It’s a fun record all in all. Westerberg is a memorable vocalist, very good at conveying a catchy emotional sentiment.
\"Let It Be\" by The Replacements is a raw and heartfelt album that captures the essence of 1980s alternative rock. Released in 1984, this album showcases the band's unique blend of punk rock energy and melodic songwriting. Tracks like \"I Will Dare,\" \"Favorite Thing,\" and \"Androgynous\" highlight the band's ability to mix gritty guitars with catchy melodies, creating a sound that is both edgy and accessible. The album's production, helmed by Steve Fisk and Paul Westerberg, gives it a raw and unpolished feel that adds to its charm. Lyrically, \"Let It Be\" explores themes of disillusionment, longing, and rebellion, reflecting the angst of youth in the 1980s. The album's title track, a cover of The Beatles' classic, is a standout moment that showcases the band's ability to put their own spin on a timeless song. Overall, \"Let It Be\" is a classic album that has stood the test of time. It's a must-listen for fans of alternative rock and earns a solid 3/5 rating for its raw energy and memorable songs.
What I dream I might have sounded like if I chose the path of music, if I had the talent and the drive. No idea, as this was not the path chosen, and after so many years removed the dream is fuzzy at best. But I enjoy this albums hints of maturity from an age and time where, today, maturity was blind to the future.
cool stuff but why does gary have boner?
Best Song: We're Coming Out. That good, tight punk energy. Worst Song: Androgynous. This feels like a first draft of a better song. Well-intentioned but cheesy. Overall: Juvenile, but in a fun way. A sort of silly, punkish rock that doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. Still, a boisterous first half gave way to a comparatively slow and dull second half.
Smells like Nirvana spirit
quintessential post-punk listen. This album finally has gotten it's due.
Like this. punk and plaintive
Turned out not to be a cover of the Beatles' album.
Liked it better the second time through. Got it past meh but not all the way up the like meter.
So was "Gary Has A Boner" about themes of teenage rebellion, social alienation, and the struggles of adolescence? Or was it in fact just about Gary's boner?
Sometimes jangly, sometimes spiky.
I Will Dare - 7.5/10 Favourite Thing - 7.5/10 We’re Coming Out - 7.5/10 Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out - 7.5/10 Androgynous - 8/10 Black Diamond - 7.5/10 Unsatisfied - 7.5/10 Seen Your Video - 7.5/10 Gary’s Got a Boner - 8/10 Sixteen Blue - 7.5/10 Answering Machine - 7/10 TOTAL - 83/110
something i can see myself going back to, but for sure this is best in the background i think. good but not amazing.
This is an album I have but don't think I've ever listened to it. From the jump they're giving decent rock vibes. They have a song called 'Androgynous' that is incredibly progressive even by today's standards, that's pretty awesome. The rest of the album is decent. 3/5
I like their sound and energy. I thought they lost it a bit in the middle of the album though. Quite a raw singing style. Not always my thing. Interesting choice to have the drums kick in so late in Answering Machine.
As a Minnesotan I kinda feel like I should already know this band but this is the first time I've ever listened to them. I like their energy and I enjoyed this album overall. 3.5/5
Solid grunge punk band
mostly fun rocking album.
At first I was gearing up to bitch slap this album in my review for being another boring 80s post punk album but it really beat the hostile expectations by mixing the best parts of 80s and even 90s pop rock. Even though I didn’t really love any of the songs except androgynous I heard some Billy Joel and some offspring type sounds at various points which is enough from giving it the same fate as the minutemen album.
not too bad!
Fine
3.5 It feels like this album so perfectly embodies youth: from the album art, to the angsty singing, to the discordant sound, to the frustrated and progressive lyrics. I’ve been in a particularly bad mood, but I found this album soothed it. Frankly, it was unpleasant to listen to, but I enjoyed it. My personal enjoyment of the album was probably a four, and for its cohesion I would also give it a 4, but it was very short and didn’t feel like it necessarily went anywhere (which I simultaneously appreciated and missed). I would definitely listen to it again, but I think I’d have to be in a specific mood, and the repetition would get to me and put me in a worse mood. It’s not going to be my favorite album, and it’s not a perfect album, but I think its downfalls make it fall a little hard, which is why I don’t think it’s quite a 4, but certainly higher than a 3.
Liked the album, thought some of the songs lacked a bit. 3/5 Might listen again
Nice production, some cool tunes here. Not massively up my street, but can appreciate it. Favourite tracks: I Will Dare, Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, Androgynous.
Not bad! Honestly the first punk album I’ve enjoyed the whole way through. It’s just not my genre, but this seems prescient and I can hear how influential they must’ve been.
Great beginning, lost me a bit at the end of the album, a few different styles all in one album. Fun nonetheless
Ahh another random punk rock album
Although this was at the point where the band was getting tired of playing punk songs, I found that most of the songs... were pretty much just punk songs. Yeah, there were a couple of songs that, like "Unsatisfied" and "Seen Your Video." But the rest didn't seem that far away from their punk roots. Some interesting ideas, though. And why "Black Diamond," of all of the Kiss songs they could have covered?
I liked this, this is my jam. I need to listen to it again because I was distracted, but I liked what I heard. Probably more of a 3.5 from what I remember.
Solid early 80’s punk album. I’m familiar with The Replacements but hadn’t ever listened to an album too to bottom. It’s not my favorite style but it’s really interesting to listen to. Gary’s Got A Boner wins song title of the day. Answering Machine is a deeper song that you would assume. Will relisten again.
Some clever stuff here, surprised I hadn't heard it before.
I wish there was a 1/2 star to this rating system, so that I could give this a 3.5/5. I enjoyed the personal lyrics on some of these songs, like answering machine. Reminds me of some of the whiny, pop punk stuff I enjoy now but just 80s-afied.
some fun, some too scathing
Really liked Answering Machine - even though the lyrics seem toxic AF. Overall it reminded me of old Goo Goo Dolls.
Too hard. Yelling.
There are some real bangers on here. Found myself groovin even when the lyrics weren't quite hitting. Just a solid listen overall, and it did make me wanna hear more from The Replacements.
With classics such as "Gary's Got a Boner", it's hard to deny the impact that The Replacements had on the punk rock scene. However, while this album had some bops that I could bob to like "I Will Dare", overall I wasn't truly encapsulated by what was there, no matter how fun the overall album is.
Not a huge fan of punk music. The instrumental part of Seen Your Video was cool. Stand-out: Unsatisfied
All it sounds like to me is the soundtrack to a forgotten 80's teen comedy. A few songs that stuck out were Androgynous (a song about two non-binary people in a relationship all the way back in 1984), Gary's Got a Boner, and Perfectly Lethal. A decent entry in post-punk coming-of-age type music. It has a pretty rough sound in some areas which is typical of the genre, but its not really my thing. Although, I can appreciate it for what it is.
Wasn't very punky. Not a huge fan
This feels like the missing link between punk and Pixies, just without any of the excitement of either.
Ganska bra, en stark trea
Good
A few songs stand out, but the rest kind of blend together. Not all that in my opinion. I definitely prefer 'Pleased to Meet Me'.
Punk rock seems to resonate the most with disenfranchised youth of that specific era, more than anything else. This record is fine, but I'm at most indifferent to the punk rock genre. The quality and creativity is there, I can hear it. But this style of music rarely ever scratches the itch for me. It was decent, but nothing groundbreaking.
Straightforward rock album with a few songs I know and like.
eclectic.. fun.. Blind channel type popular alternative sound.. but not blind channel type.. like.. easy to understand hard to forget.. easy to see past.. feeling; pretentious; as part of the overall feeling; the album as a whole; explodes with his single-mindedness.. with his unwillingness to understand.. that has become a habit for young people.. Fun to listen.. Something to have.. this album.. have it have the feelings of youth.. sotting album cover.. very good match..
It's a fun album, but to me nothing really pops out. 6/10
This was ok.
Surprised I've never heard of these guys. Pleasantly surprised with the post-punk sound.
Reminds me of High School. I like Pleased to Meet me more, but there's a 33 1/3 about this one I should read. It might change my mind.
Nothing spectacular
soft punk. ok
Androgynous - unsatisfied are great tracks. Quite like the raw sound in a couple other tracks as well, imagine it would sound great live. 3.5
What a bore
This sounds like a band, it sounds like a gang. I preferred the melodies compared to the more hardcore roots. It doesn't quite flow with the constant change in direction. It's the sound of a band not sure if they want to break through to stadiums or not. The songs stack up with enough oomph to carry them. Maybe the ambition wasn't there. An interesting mid 80's musical document.
favourite songs are androgynous, black diamond, garys got a boner, answering machine
3,5 helt ait
I thought I would like this more than I did. With the exception of a few songs (Androgynous , Unsatisfied) , I never really got into the entire album, it passed me by more than it captured me.
This was ok. Not my favourite; a couple a good songs, but overall forgettable.
16th June 2023 Listened during the day while watching the ashes, doing bits of work and chilling. Stayed in and watched X men in the evening before Ebbs’ wedding over the weekend. It’s got a wit and a youthful exuberance to it which I enjoyed.
5/10. I'll let this album be if it lets me be.
idk first half was boring second half was pretty good ugh
Nothing special but bearable
Some good songs but nothing too special
It's odd when something is incredibly influential and you can hear that, but just doesn't grab your heart. The lofi screams Pavement, HMHB and Moldy Peaches, the vocals have been lifted by Black Francis and Kurt Cobain, the silliness/seriousness even goes up to Wet Leg or Art Brut. But beyond a couple of tracks, I just... Liked it. Maybe it's a grower, but it didn't have a hook to bring me back.
first listen like the guitar tone but it's kinda messy
Better than I thought it would be. Androgynous was the standout track for me.
rough garage rock
Standouts: I Will Dare, Favorite Thing, Androgynous, Standouts: I Will Dare, Favorite Thing, Androgynous, Unsatisfied, Sixteen Blue, Answering Machine. And from the Bonus material: 20th Century Man "Heartbeat - It's a Lovebeat" by the Defranco Family! Wow, they made it actually listenable! 3.5/5
Pretty good
It was alright. Nothing stuck with me.
Actually fairly listenable, even if the track names sound like something from AxCx.
Sounds like The Smiths, The Bunnymen, The Cure and early REM with a punkier vibe Quite a few songs take some very surprising turns Singer grates after a while but it kind of all works anyway
Harmless, classic record. Post punk has always been a meh genre for me, The Replacements.
Perfectly adequate, albeit not quite irreplaceable, post-punk rock tunes.
Nothing special. Just ok
Bit shout. But that's punk right? Favourite track? The outtake of 20th Century Boy. But that kind of says everything. Love the energy, still looking for a melody.
It's pretty good. Sound and vocals quite raw.
Nice listen.
Androgynous was very good
Enjoyed it as well.
Only one song I didn't like, but only a few that I did. The rest is good rock and easy listening. Not my speed overall.
Cool album cover. Makes me think of late teenage / early 20 years living in the suburbs, growing my hair out, and being rambunctious. I definitely am enjoying the sound of the band. I hesitate to call it punk rock but I think it's like indie rock punk. Good choruses and great guitar riffs that blend subgenres of rock nicely. What a weird slowdown in "We're Comin' Out" right in the middle of a guitar solo. This is really a rare idea and it almost sounds like the guitarist was in the middle of it and then the rest of the band + engineer started slowing down without letting the guitarist know. Pretty cool effect that I liked. The speed up in the ending with more intensity was great too. "Androgynous" is fantastic and not what I expected to hear on the record. Cool track with progressive lyric content. "Unsatisfied" sounds like an evolution of a Bruce Springsteen song (this is a good thing!). Nice album! I will be spinning this one a bit more I think.
My oldest son is a fan of this record and I think that's where it hits, it would be hard to be an 18 year old who is into rock and roll and not get this album. I'm not sure why Stinson could not play the solo on I Will Dare but he rips out his best Ace Frehley on Black Diamond. And on that, sorry but there is nothing cute nor interesting about doing a Kiss cover in the style of Kiss. Westerberg gets kudos for the prescience of Androgynous, lyrically clever and well thought through, tells a story that needed to be told. So for him to even feel the need to write it is brilliant, he's a fine human being. That said, the stand out track is Unsatisfied, that's the one I've just played a few times this morning, a beautiful melody and screaming out for a cover by a great female voice, wonderful song. The rest, c'mon let's be honest there's not much happening there, but then that's kinda ok too, it is one of those records.
Look, this album’s okay, but hardly earth-shattering. I liked the opening track, which featured Peter Buck, & the final track, Answering Machine, which I thought was the most interesting track on the album. I also enjoyed Seen Your Video, which is almost an instrumental. But that was about it. I don’t think the rest of the album was bad - it just seems overrated. Black Diamond, the Kiss cover, was disappointing.
I've tried with the Replacements, I swear to god I've tried. I just don't really love it. Reviews like this one in Consequence of Sound (https://consequence.net/2008/05/album-review-let-it-be-deluxe-edition/) talk about them as "the only band that matters", and this as the greatest album of all time. But I swear, I have seen a hundred bands playing on a Wednesday night at the Sandringham Hotel in the 80s who were this good or better. Is this the emperor's new clothes, or did you really have to be there? I think the over-the-top adulation really makes it hard for me to approach the Replacements without some immediate resentment. The shitty playing and marginal recording don't offend me, but at least half this album is filler: Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, Seen Your Video, Gary's Got a Boner, or Black Diamond (a Kiss cover, god help me) to name a few. Reviews describe I Will Dare or Unsatisfied as the second coming of Jesus Lennon, but I don't see it. They're OK, but, you know, not all that and a bag of chips. The only song on here that did anything for me is Androgynous. I feel like the papers are full of conservatives bashing on gender diverse people, and I found this song an unaffected and moving call for tolerance. This album is 2.5 stars for me, rounding up because of Androgynous.
It was OK. Nothing mind blowing and somewhat forgettable. There wasn't a single song that really catched my interest.
Wholesome 80s fun
More six form bands. This one's quite good, and I'd have gone to their gigs in the back of a pub until they broke up because the bassist wouldn't stop saying how fit the drummer's mum was and it all got a bit tense. The lead singer probably knew that half their fans only came to gigs because they fancied the drummer AND his mum.
Enjoyed it enough, good to get that post-teenage angst out there!
I think this is a solid album. Really nice balance of catchy riffs and melodies against some post-punk crunch and swagger. I also love that they already viewed in the early/mid-80s that the punk culture was just as prone to snobbery and judgment as any culture. Please know I don't mean to single out punk culture alone; no culture of which I'm aware is immune to it. I used to see a lot of Dead shows, for example, and after a few years, I started to really dislike that same exclusivity that I'm addressing here. Back to the album and music. Superbly composed and arranged, and wonderfully performed. There are some fast and difficult rhythmic and harmonic elements here and I know they are not easy to perform well. I like Paul Westerberg's solo work, too. I had forgotten that Peter Buck plays the guitar solo on "I Will Dare". Very cool.
Well its 80s punkish rock.. i can dig it 3 stars.
A diverse, subversive, and most importantly fun punk album. It didn't blow me away, but it's definitely one I'll go back to
I liked the music and the singer was clearly giving it his all but the songs themselves were lyrically boring or repetitive. I feel like this could have been more with better songwriting but I'll round up to a 3 since I generally enjoyed it
It was fine but a lot of it felt pretty flat to me. Not sure if it was an intended sound or just that it hasn't been remastered but that took away from it for me. 2.5 but I'll give it a 3
I was surprised this was done in the 80s because it sounded very 90s to me. Either way this was fine, I enjoyed listening to it, but I didn’t find it all that special either.
Nice album. Gritty and determined all the way through. It wasn't the tenor of my day, but I did enjoy hearing it. First time for me!
At times the music is cohesively poor. It’s as if the recording engineer captured warm up randomness and somehow spliced it into the album. It’s a real turn off. We’re Coming Out is an example, and I don’t care for Gary’s Boner. Somehow, I’m not surprised that Ted Nugent co-wrote Gary’s Boner. Upon a second listen, I realized there were fewer of these moments than I took away from the first listen. Black Diamond is my favorite song on the album. Sixteen Blue is a close second.
Standout tracks for me are Answering Machine and Unsatisfied. Androgynous is a well known hit. Overall the album is charming enough.
It's so weird how this record swings back and forth between new wave and punk. I like it, but always have trouble with this eras production. The drums and guitars just seem so skinny.
Not familiar with the replacements at all, but I feel like this album was a good introduction. Solid 80s rock with lyrics that in some ways feel a little ahead of their time especially on songs like androgynous and sixteen blue.
I like the feel and the singer’s voice. Just wanted it to be a bit better. I suppose I was craving more memorable hooks.
I swear this is Nirvana. Six years earlier!
Interesting punk styling from the 80s
3.5 but good
Good
I'm into it, but seems a tad overrated. Perhaps you had to be there.
I suspect this is heresy, but Unsatisfied was an immediate dud. Yet the lap steel saves the track with underground guitar work, present in varied form all over the rest of the LP (sadly not again as steel). Guitar work is a mixed blessing. Seems seminal, sincere, but not personally essential this year.
😞😞😞
Some bangers. Some noise.
I very nearly loved this. Tight band, singer has a great voice and there are *nearly" some great tunes. I think if I'd discovered this in the early 2000s when The Strokes etc were big it would be part of my canon. As it is only really good because the melodies just aren't quite there. Checked this by listening to Is This It after which I'm sure is a better album.
Bog post punk. It was ok? Not bad, not great. Was a fairly short album at least. 3/5.
Pretty good coming of age teen rock album. Enjoyed Androgynous, which I thought was particularly prescient for the mid 1980s. I wish we'd travelled farther since then!
It ight for an 80s album, nothing special tbh
A good rock & punk album. First & second album song are interesting
Some of the song titles made me laugh, but regarding the music, it's completely different from the "Let It Be" most people think about. Its very angsty and reminds me of more modern stuff. The music sometimes drowns out the vocals. Overall good, but I'm not sure I would go back and listen again. Fave track(s): I Will Dare, Black Diamond
Solid record which really takes flight when The Replacements go from the more punky songs to the more posty-punky ones. The trio of 'Androgynous', 'Black Diamond' and 'Unsatisfied' smack in the middle of the album is clearly the peak.
I jumped up and down to "Favorite Thing", I laughed to "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", I cried to "Black Diamond", I rubbed one out to "Gary's Got a Boner". I give this album three teenage emotional roller-coaster rides out of five. 🎢🎢🎢
Average Alternative
probably a precursor to lots of music I do like but don’t really care for it all that much
listen
Early post-punk indie rock. Fairly diverse, faster paced but also slower tempo tracks. Standout is "I Will Dare".
A pretty impressive album from a band I’ve never listened to before. There was a wide range of punk and rock sounds on this album. The styles felt like 80s punk some 90s and 00s alternative as well. I thought it was pretty impressive given they made this in the 80s. Some of their songs were retry insightful for the 80s as well. 7.4/10
Lead off tracks sounded alot like the Beatles. Would have been too much like them for 1984. Not shabby
Oh the naive rusty sound of 80s punk, so soft, so plain. It feels me with warmth almost.
I only really liked the last song (Answering Machine) tbh
bra greier
7/10
I will dare: a very bouncy song. And catchy. Has replay ability which I like! 3/5 favourite thing: a bit of me this song. Similar to the last. A very cool sounding album so far. Not good as the last but an all round great song. Would be cool live. 2/5 We’re coming out: good live song maybe. Hectic. Even more my cup of tea.A bit repetitive tho. But I get the appeal. A rip of a guitar solo tho. Oh wow the slow down. 2/5 Tommy gets his tonsils out: I think a good song in isolation. Not a fan of its placement in the album. Hard to honestly rate it. Similar to the last song. Just not as good. Again I like the change in the chorus. Catchy melody. 1/5 Androgynous: wow what a song. So cool. Alone it sounds cool and really fits its place in the album. Slows things down. But the lyrics are so cool. Really fucking cool. On top of that, for the times it’s cool.4/5 Black diamond: back where we left,eh? It’s a good song in its own right. I just feel it hasn’t aged amazingly and is similar to things at the time idk. Sounds similar to things but they may have copied. The guitar rips tho. 1/5 Unsatisfied: idk what to think of this. It’s good. A good change of tempo rlly. It’s alright I guess. Well it is but isn’t amazing. Has replay ability. 2/5 Seen your video: I love the instrumental it isn’t over the top it kinda just lets you jam out. The bass is so cool and the piano is jazzy. It’s chaotic and I tell you that we don’t wanna know. Only downside it didn’t last longer. 3/5 Gary’s got a boner: I wonder if it’s a raging one cause this song is rocking. I’m loving it. The guitar the fast pace. The lyrics and all! What did Gary do wrong??? Idk but he has a great song about him! 3/5 Sixteen blue:a possible coming of age song. It’s cool I think. Idk how to describe but when singers sing like this I don’t personally like. But the lyrics and music is good. The lyrics are acc beautiful 3/5 Answering machine: a very good end to an album. Good lyrics. good guitar and is a nice mixture of what this album is but doesn’t really leave an impact on me. 2/5 Total:2.7/5
A mostly great album with some skippable songs. Androgynous is a necessary song for all music lovers. Maybe a few more listens would warrant a higher score but not at the moment.
Lekker naar te luisteren! Niet de beste band in mijn optiek!
cool.
Steady away
Pretty good punk rock, solid 3
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Definitely, it’s filled with great songwriting and that unmistakable 80’s feel and sound, the last track was rather odd though and was annoying Favourite song: Track 7 - Unsatisfied
Sloppy rock that fools the ear into thinking it's punk sometimes. While I can see how it might have been influential, there's nothing truly great here.
Good
Dobra sprememba po prejšnjih dveh albumih, ampak me ni tako pritegnil. Zanimiva anakdota z naslovom albuma (zaradi Beatles, na radiju bo naslednja pesem povedala, kaj bo naslov pesmi).
Rock. Punk
I found this album to be pretty mediocre, not necessarily bad but pretty repetitive and unoriginal. However, fans of punkish rock might appreciate it.
Solid rock / punk rock. 3.5 / 5, but I can't round up to 4 on this one.
Kinda uninteresting, it's aight but didn't catch me. Standard 80's, not my jam but it's ok. 3/5
Not bad but I wasn’t super into it. The KISS cover of Black Diamond was good and a cool surprise. Favorite song was Unsatisfied.
Good 80's punk
Would be a 2.5 but rounding up. Not for me, cool subject matter. Second half of the album redeems the first mostly
Black Diamond cover was dope. Rest of the album was pretty okay. Solid 3
I like it. Favorite: We're Comin' Out
Good classic rock sound with a punk edge. Vocals aren't always good, whether that's on purpose, being drunk, or due to not caring I'm not sure. It sounds like the singer is destroying his voice every time he goes up high.
Enjoyed the angst.
This is such a funny album. Having a coming of age theme, with very real kind of experiences in the lyrics. I mean, who makes a song like Garys got a boner? Although this particular type of 80's punk isn't my cup of tea, you gotta appreciate how they break the "traditional" punk style.
Hadde visst hørt både i will dare og androgynous uten at eg kobla at da va samme artist
The Replacements are fine to me
There's a They Might Be Giants song called "We're the Replacements" that is, I think, better than this whole album. But these boys are just here having fun and playing their music with the guitar loud. Can't hate on 'em.
So I quite liked it even though I've not really found a lot of the post-punk stuff from that era to my tastes, I can certainly hear influences from acts I like that have come along since, probably gonna sit at a nice 3.
A comfortable 3, pushing a 4. Really strong, consistent album with some solid tracks right the way through (and a couple of less good ones like the one about Gary's Boner!). But, there's nothing there that elevates it to the level above, nothing that which is why it stays at a 3. Could do with sanding off the rough edges a little, but did enjoy listening to it.
A solid punk album that took us on a journey through the funny awkwardness of adolescence coming into adulthood. Best: Unsatisfied Worst: Sixteen Blue Note: Spotify had an extended version album however I only listened to the original 11 tracks.
I prefer my punk to be American skate punk/melodic hardcore from the 90s, but this is ok
Some memorable songs but expected the entire album to be better.
Still trying to be a replacements fan but not not-a-fan
High three.
Some songs were ok, but not great.
Its a not bad slice of early punk
A mix of soft punk and soft rock and something in between. Not easy listening.
This sounds like an album I’ll love in time but I can’t give that verdict in just one day so I’ll give it a neutral 3. It’s like a snotty less classy clash but with a lot of bite and layers.
Good mix of that new wave punk. Few good tracks and a short album.
Hardly original, but I can Let That Be.
i thought it was alright but the singing bothered me after awhile and i just didn’t like it but i didn’t not like it so it was just eh
Replacements are a bridge band for me - I don't like punk but can appreciate a ton of the energy and the bands that flirt with that aesthetic (of course like the Replacements, Clash, early Goo Goo Dolls). So the best songs here are super catchy and fun and yeah holy cow listen to Goo Goo Dolls Hold Me Up and Superstar Car Wash and you can hear the strong Replacements influence. The best songs. First two are great - "I Will Dare" and "Favourite Thing" but then comes "We're Comin' Out" - the first 90 seconds of that are unlistenable. Noise/shit with no emphasis on even basic songwriting - I strongly dislike this. So much back and forth on this damn album - track 5 "Androgynous" is a cool piano ballad out of left field that even with its low-fi feel (usually an immediate skip for me) has a nice back-of-the-barroom sound to it. Probably need to note somewhere in here (uh...here) that Paul Westerberg's voice sometimes is like listening to Drano. I think I'm a Replacements greatest hits kinda fan; I hear a lot of great things on this album but a *lot* of hit and miss. Too much for me to have this album as a keeper but the best have the common thread of a great melody - more of that please. 6/10 3 stars.
Good album with nice riffs and rythms. I did not get a boner like Gary, but I might have enjoyed it enough to return to it again someday.
The replacements are a bit like that TV show with the young snotty boys looking for relationships in all the wrong ways, I think it was The Inbetweeners. Interesting at first
I'm being a bit generous here because I really want to like the Replacements more than I think I do. A bit gruff and ready for me.
This album is that transition through your twenties from rebel punk to something more akin to a self-aware adult. There's plenty of playfulness in the lyrics that show adolescences isn't all angst. It is weird and something comes of it. The album also has enough changes in musical elements to feel whole and interesting. Enjoyed it overall.
Pretty ok, didn't light my fire
Didn’t hate.
Some songs are really good, some of them are not enjoyable but it's an okay album
I've heard of, but never really sat down and listened to, The Replacements. The album cover looks like we'll be getting unpretentious working class rock and roll. Looking at the track list, 17 songs, goodness. Oh wait, no, I got an expanded version. There's only 11 songs really. Whew. Giving it a listen I hear reasonably simple listenable arrangements, high energy level in places quite punky, emotional some silliness plenty of angst, somewhat rough overall. I think I would have liked them a lot when I was younger, too bad I didn't discover them then. Favorites: We're Comin' Out, Androgynous.
It was fine.
I don't hate this. I also don't love this. All the songs are nice and up tempo but they're all very similar in their energy and there isn't really anything going on that peaks my interest. Solid meh from me.
Meh but listenable
Highlight - Black Diamond Lowlight - Answering Machine
when i find myself in times of trouble garys boner talks to me. imagine the scenario where someone who doesn't know music gets recommended they should listen to let it be as its up there as one of the best albums ever and they find this. they're either going to disown the recommender or they're gonna drown themselves in sleeveles stonewashed denim and get tattoos of springsteen and bon jon bovi. 'Born living on the stairs!'
Wel lekker heur, gewoon beetje standaard rock
Balancing wild punk with a rare soft side, The Replacement’s Let It Be may lack the hits of future albums, but it does an okay job of introducing the group as not just another rock outfit.
Interesting album to kick off the week. I liked these guys...punk rock meets regular rock but also sounding british. I really liked Unsatisfied and the rest just flowed through as I was working. Hope they are being safe up on that roof.
3/5
aighttt
I like the rawness of the album.
Not really my jam, but some decent songs.
Running through a whole range of styles. Plenty of nods to their influences. Some strong songs but others irritating.
It's alright; couple of good songs, couple of crap songs. Middle of the road for me.
3.5/5 Best songs: I will dare Black diamond Androgynous
It was ok. Very inconsistent. Some excellent tracks, and some downright shitty ones.
Skemmtileg plata.
Good early punkish 3
80s pop/punk
Another punk going alternative rock album. The bridge between the two genres viewed at another angle. And while Pixies introduced some new elements in "Surfer Rosa", The Replacements made a "more sincere" work in their pretty decent coming-of-age album, "Let It Be" four years earlier. Most of the tracks are still as messy and as edgy as most punk songs that I know. And I unsurprisingly didn't enjoy most of them. The theme ranges from childishly fun (songs about somebody's tonsils or boners, for example) to mature and serious (a non-binary love story, for instance). And the signature punk energy weaves all of those tracks, creating such a solid statement, despite it's messy sounds. Not something that I would listen to again, but definitely a fun ride.
Pretty alright album with some catchy songs. No songs recognized
Was fine
Bit of a mixed bag but ultimately Quite Good
Weird vocals
Cool, likeable, fuzzy, indie bop-along jangle.
Meh
For post punk, at least it didn’t piss me off. Seems a bit like a cross between too many things. Halfway between The Clash and Nirvana, T-Rex meets Guns ‘n’ Roses. Maybe doesn’t have a load of personality of its own
weird and jagged and sloppy. unsatisfied is the best jam on this boy.
Couple weird ones
Pretty good album, but it mostly felt very similar to a lot of other punk rock records in the 80s. Nothing too crazy, but overall solid.
Starts off as forgettable, progresses into really bland always-shouting scratchy thrash punk, and I almost gave up on it. But then it had variety. Some slow ballads, Album was all over the map. Some good stuff in there. A little for everyone. I might even revisit some specific tracks later.
Early punk sound, some good songs, sounded repetitive
Largely enjoyable, but it didn't blow me away. I liked the queerness of it, so bonus points for that.
Not bad! Surprisingly didn’t mind it
I always thought of The Replacements as a full on punk band, but this album takes me back to hearing rock songs on FM radio when I was a kid. Maybe not quite that polished and easy listening, but certainly post punk.
Way more 'punk' than i was expecting. Thought it was going to be more 80's new wave-y, but was mostly more of an early crusty punk sound. Pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it.
Good, I like the second half of the album best. The first was to punky ;)
3/5 niceish album, but not enough
Very enjoyable album. I like it!
Solid. Would like to give it another listen
I have never heard of this band so was interested to listen. It surprised. I had heard Crash Test Dummies’ version of Androgynous, had no idea it was a cover!
Yeah enjoyed this American pop-punk.
Some songs reminded me of the strokes and jet before they (the replacements) started singing really fast.
I loved this when I was a teenager. It's still fun but definitely less interesting. Jangly indie punk with some nice songs writing and shouty singing.
It was fine
Not the biggest fan of punk/post-punk stuff but this album spreads itself between genres quite well, albeit a little too much. Great listen and some great lyrics, too.
Expected to enjoy this more than I did, couple of great songs but largely a bit meh
It was good, but nothing special.
Solid 80s band. Never heard of them....glad I have now.
Bit tedious after a while
Somehow I have never listened to this. Couple of punk tracks here, but much of it is alt-rock being shaped by a punk legacy. I can get along with that. Listened to it three times and it's a grower. "Androgynous" and "Unsatisfied" have a haunting melancholy about them. Towards the end of the album, "Gary's Got a Boner" is shit, and the next track "Sixteen Blue" is also a weak point. But then they wrap up with the insanely memorable "Answering Machine". It's slightly uneven up to this point too. I'm going to give it 3.5 and not feel too bad, because it already made the collage.
a vibe for sure, super 80s post punk, some weird songs like Gary with a boner lmao. I see the appeal and enjoyed it a good bit.
Struggled to rate this one - felt like I enjoyed it a bit more than the Byrds album and other 2's, but didn't feel it was up there with the 4's. If only there was a number that fit between those two. Unsatisfied gives me a Bryan Adams feel Saved: I Will Dare, Unsatisfied
Pretty solid album. Good variety. Punk inflected rock. My favorites are the less punk, more overly sentimental ballads Androgynous and Unsatisfied. A few songs faded into the background for me. 3 or 4.
Meh. While a skilled album, I didn’t connect with it.
Sin pena no gloria
Good, could probably end up being a 4
I like this. Definitely raw, but enjoyable. Sounds very early 80's. Androgynous is ace. Piano / singing. Noice.
punk-y lighthearded garage band-y. Didn't resonate with me super well
I wasn’t sure about this on first listen but by the second time I was really quite enjoying it ! ***
Gary got a boner
Seen Your Video and Sixteen Blade were highlights
Of its time
Highlight - Black Diamond Lowlight - Answering Machine
Good - but not really my vibe
Ikke vært innom Replacements før. Varierende album. Perfectly Lethal allright.
Not bad Brit rock
This was fine... not good, not bad.
Wish I liked this more, them being from Minneapolis and all, but I just don't find their music very interesting or exciting, in general or on this album.
It was ok I guess.
I really like the lead track/single I Will Dare. I like punk rock but appreciate that they expanded their sound here a bit. Has some nice moments but as an album it hangs together pretty loosely. Hearing where Kurt Cobain may have drawn some inspiration for vocals.
This was pretty good! Never heard of them before, sounded 90s so was surprised to find it was early 80s
Would definitely love this for a road trip
I've never heard this album before or any songs on it. pretty good punk rock album.
Surprisingly likeable post punk album
Solid album overall, felt like standard 80's punk
Low 3
4/8 Good coming-of-age album. Standout Tracks: We're Comin' Out, Black Diamond, Seen Your Video, Sixteen Blue, Answering Machine
Rock/punk. Normal. Not really special
I don’t know who The Replacements sound like but it isn’t The Replacements .
Liked first track. But everything else just a coming of age, rough bag of noise that all either started to sound the same, or otherwise was just a dirge that rambled nowhere. If it wasn’t for me then, it certainly isn’t now.
4/10… college rock / punk / *1984
i think my earliest memory of someone telling me a record is good and me not getting it is of a friend burning me a cd of this album. i think it may be good i just cant get into it, had to skip a few tracks. another case of theres too much anglophone 80s rock on this list imo
They had one really good song that starts this album off. And that's it
Tepid 90s radio rock 10 years early. Not really my thing. “Black Diamond” is okay.
mjoah
Chaotisch und unzusammenhängende Lieder, nichts für mich.
Wenigstens war es kurz. Dissatisfied hat mir gefallen immerhin
Some more of the faster paced songs were actually pretty good. Just those slower ones were tough to get through. And answering machine was honestly one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard.
It’s fine? Maybe I should start being harder on these because I really don’t see why I had to listen to this before I died
This album left me unsatisfied. Liked Songs Added: Answering Machine
holy cover band
Meh
