Reviews (page 8 of 8)
80s sound bit punky, no doubt influential for something but not something I will ever listen to
Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: I Will Dare Cutting Edge: Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, Androgynous, Seen Your Video Overall Notes: I really did not like this one on first listen, but I saw the appeal on second listen. Would've given it a one for sure after first listen, got bumped up to a 2 after a couple more listens. I do like I Will Dare a lot though.
Some parts I enjoyed but punk never seems to strike a chord with me though I found this a less agonising punk album to listen to as it seemed to lean towards rock in areas. It was ok 2*
Hmm is a bit too loose and messy for my taste. Sloppy music.
They were loved at CKCU and I even bought their 87 release so I could listen to Alex Chilton over and over. It’s good that at this time they were (slowly) getting away from a punk sound on this LP, since it was 1984. Androgynous is interesting and probably didn’t appeal to their core audience, but it’s a bit lame melodically and the lyrics lack wit, and if I put it on a list of piano ballads I know it’ll probably come in last. Black Diamond and Sixteen Blue are more melodic and lass grungy but I'm not so crazy about stuff like Gary’s Gotta Boner and How do you Say Goodnight to an Answering Machine.
eh, its alright. really long tho. ik its extended
I liked Seen your video the best, probably because it was mostly instrumental - good driving post punk music. The rest was not very exciting
Admittedly not all the time I put enough attention to these records, with this one I tried but to me seems quite irrelevant. Artistically speaking there is nothing to write home about but I guess they made a statement years ahead of their time, you go Replacements!
Forgettable
Fun listen, not bad
OK 2.5+ Liked the weird sound effects on final track ‘Answering Machine’ the best
I think these guys wanted to be British and about 8 years earlier. There are two decent songs here, Androgynous and Black Diamond. The rest of it is really quite annoying though, hence the low score. I couldn't wait for it to finish.
Nothing special
It was okay.
Should have taken their own advice, there’s another album with that name already ya na?
1984: Androgynous, Unsatisfied, I Will Dare
1. dare -0 2. thing - 0 3. coming - 1 4. tommy - 0 .5 andro - 1 6. black - 2 7. unzatizfied - 1 8. video - 1 9. boner - 1 10. blue - 1 11. machine - 1
Not for me. 1/5
Ugggghhh do I have to? God these posers are SO OVERRATED. Even "I Will Dare" is a complete rip off of the The Vandals or some bad Neil Young song. Also you named your album "Let It BE?" WTF Man I hate the Replacements. Ugh.
I found this quite dull
Not for me
it was very forgettable post punk
Yg6h6
No
Bum rot. Just an atonal sludge of noise and abrasive vocals offering almost nothing of any value. Paul McCartney should sue for reputational damage in case anyone thinks this has a connection to the Beatles album.
Early punk. Sounds like all the rest. Nothing unique.
this is so ass bro its like the 80s version of shitty 2000s pop punk
2/10
Truly horrible stuff. 0/100
Noise
Not good. Almost finished it, but it's just not good.
There have and always be angry young men, I think more so in Great Brittan, this album is that in audible form.
This type of thinking is how we've allowed fascism to take over.
Nah
this isn't my music, but the inspiration Connor Oberst drew from this album in his Commander Venus days seems obvious to me "androgynous" - can't quite decide if this is critical of 80s androgyny, or in support of it...? "he might be a father but he sure ain't a dad" is a good line "unsatisfied" and "sixteen blue" are probably the most tolerable tracks for me, the melody of "seen your video" isn't horrid the guitar and general music of sixteen blue remind me of neko case answering machine...a relic of another time
ew
I don't understand the fuss about this band or record, wasn't impressed in the late eighties when I came across their music during my teenage punk/indie years and three decades later it still doesn't impress me. The only thing I can clearly hear is what Kurt Cobain listened to in his teens and how Westerberg's singing (?) style influenced his. But no, not for me, neither punk nor indie, mediocre rock songs, drunken bar ballads ("Androgynous') pub rock covers (from Kiss and T. Rex), ridiculous self-deprecating lyrics, ("Gary's Got a Boner"), let alone the sloppy production of this record. If this represents "one of the greatest albums of the decade", to quote Stephen Thomas Erlewine, then "I Will Dare" him. Totally misplaced on this list. 1/5
I've realised I really struggle to enjoy music when the singer can't sing
English rock, punk band. No big hits to speak of.
This album flew by so fast I didn’t even realize I was listening to anything. Not for me I guess.
1/5
Wish they taken their own advice. Please Please Me!
Deathly dull, mid-80s American rock cosplaying (badly) as alternative music.
Interesting for about 4 and a half minutes. Then it gets silly and tiresome. Punk after punk was relevant. Great name for a band but the songs aren't there on this album to back it up. In the city by the jam ripped off at least 4 times on this album. Meh.
okay, I didn't like it but I saw so many good reviews I started to listen to it again. First song was okay, but it went downhill fast. It's a no for me.
Replacements for what? The Ramones? No, definitely not my thing.
Can’t stand the singer, and the unpolished production. Not sure why this is defined as “alternative”.
Too much of the same sound.
Couldnt enjoy this. Not for me.
Got two tracks in and didn't like it
53/1001 - British James Hetfield voice and sloppy musicianship.
Sounds sloppy and the production was not great Forgettable, couldn’t tell when the album ended and it started back from the beginning
dont remember a second but I know I wasn't into it
Forgettable
💩
Not my style, sorry
Punk done dumb. Not my thing. Even the KISS cover is lazy AF.
Sounds like and about as good as the band I was in when I was 13
Sure I heard this lot at my local pub the other Saturday but then realised that the pub band were miles better. Heard this stuff a 1001 times before and I’m bored of it. Good name for an album though but this record does not speak words of wisdom so let it be. 1/5 2/5/24
One star so I can press the vote button.
There's absolutely nothing on here to recommend. No good songs, no riffs, no musicianship, no good lyrics. Just no.
Not my style
It’s like new wave instrumentation with punk vocal. A bit sun-standard Clash or Police. Not for me. By “answering machine” (the last track) I just wanted to delete all messages.
This album is all over the place. Shouty punk 10 years too late.
Please stop giving me shitty English rock bands. Please.
Wow, this is total garbage. How did this ever make it on the best-of list of anyone? It's bad punk rock but without the speed and energy. Not that those would make it good, mind you. But the only thing that's left are the other typical hallmarks of punk rock: bad singing, dumb lyrics, lack of instrumental skill (which the speed and energy typically try to cover up), absolute lack of songwriting skill, tacky teenage angst.
not for me
Oh mama I can r everything TeAqeu qis is going well with w attayay as st A q stawe
Did not like at all. Could not finish the album.
Ehhhh
I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS
1984 doesn't inspire much confidence. We'll see. Ok absolutely the fuck not. Boo.
Just ok for me. Didn't seem like it was professionally put together. Wonder if they ever got better.
Not my thing
Not the vibe I'm lookin' for.
Shit, boring, turned it off
Sorrý, þetta er mjög leiðinlegt. Á hvaða plánetu telst þetta góð plata?
Not for me.
Meh, im not a fan of the punk
Young garage band sound. Rather noisy. I think they have talent, but lack the skills. Music schooling would benefit them, if I may.
Ersatzlos streichen, bitte!
Very boring, not my thing.
It's pleasant- I can appreciate what they've tried but don't see what's so groundbreaking about this? When I think of the albums that have missed out because their 'Genre-quota' of 25 albums was full I realise what's wrong with the album selection of the 1001.
Gary's Got a Boner, that is all.
Crap
bueh!
Not my type of music
Next
It's not bad. It's just not for me.
Not able to finish listening
Just not for me! Felt very simplistic and not particularly sonically interesting!
Boring album. Poorly mixed
hmm
Another stinker
Very uninspiring and extremely beige. It’s a rock album with nothing much going for it. You’ll be looking for something else to listen to by the halfway mark at least. 1 Star!
It was ok
