Fucking weirdo rock, fuck yes.
3.5
Good punk but far from mind blowing.
A mix of punk / rock anthems- typically not my go-to genre but I did appreciate the topics covered by yhe band having a more serious tone. Overall- decent
Ah, these guys. I have a friend who swears by them, his favourite band ever. Truth be told, I don't know much about them or many of their songs. This will be my maiden voyage. Well, it's a bunch of three star songs with a couple of four stars in Unsatisfied and We're Comin Out. With added weight for obviously being ahead of the Zeitgeist. Also, for a bunch of punk guys who can barely play, having an almost complete instrumental track is buck nuts. It's noisy, it's less serious and posing than much of the punk which had come out a few years earlier, but it also lacks the tunes of what the alt genre would become.
I could listen to 1 or 2 of these songs. A whole album turns into noise. Does make me want to drink whiskey though
Fun. Too long Christ
This was fine. I know they influenced some of my favourite bands. I liked it, but wasn’t blown away.
There's a lot to like here. And then there's the rest of the album.
fine enough but pretty bland. already heard a ton of british post-punk from this list and idk why we need so much
I have to re-listen to judge, didn’t leave me anything much
Used to really like this album. And its peaks - Androgynous, Answering Machine - remain high. But there’s too much Status Quo or Guns n Roses style mindless riffage on songs like Gary’s Got A Boner and that stops this album from being as good as, Halo of Flies or the Minutemen or every Husker Du album and a 100 other mid eighties post hardcore pre grunge LPs from the states.
Enjoyable enough
Not too familiar with The Replacements. Reminded me of The Stray Cats. Liked it
Gary's Got a Boner merits 3* by itself.
high 3 another decent one, but the singer was a bit annoying
I really liked this, but I feel like it's just a little too hit or miss for a stronger rating. I like the sort of post-punk/Green Day/rocker vibe going on here, but it's not super...consistent? Which isn't a bad thing, per se. I don't know. The musicianship comes and goes, and when it's here, it's solid. Again, I liked this. Fave tracks: - I Will Dare - We're Comin' Out - Androgynous - Black Diamond - Unsatisfied - Gary's Got a Boner - Sixteen Blue
2,9 - Normales Punkalbum für seine Zeit. Nichts stört wirklich, aber nichts sticht besonders heraus Highlights: Black Diamond, Unsatisfied
Few good songs. Interesting sound for a rock album in the middle of the 80’s.
Some cool songs on here but others are just filler.
I wasn't sure what to expect from these guys... pretty solid. Definitely a 3.
decent but nothing that got me too excited
Also British sounding
fine sprightly rock, maybe don't need to know Gary had a boner. The song about the answering machine didn't age well. Still, good period piece.
Diverting and unpretentious collection of power jangle bangers.
Pretty good punk-ish rock album that really feels like its from the 80s but not in a good way. The songs vary in how good they are quite a lot with some that I wont be listening to the good songs are really good and that I've added to playlists straight away.
Great guitar, horrible vocals
Fine! I think I would have liked it more when I was younger
Fun album. chaotic at times.
Garage band
Album 950 of 1089 The Replacements - Let It Be (1984) Rating : 3 / 5 A nice listen overall - some solid indie rock that never really goes past the “this isn’t too bad” level for me. It’s got that scrappy, unpolished charm that made The Replacements who they were, but it just didn’t stick with me beyond the moment. There’s no doubt they had the attitude and energy that influenced a lot of later bands, and I can respect that. The musicianship is good, the songs flow well enough, but nothing here really jumped out as something I’ll be replaying often. It sits squarely in that “good but not great” category - enjoyable while it’s on, but not something that’ll linger.
I will let it be, sure.
There were about 3 songs I really liked.
Beste sang: Answering Machine
Some hits, some misses
Pretty solid post-punk but nothing too memorable
well, its aight. its one of those albums that has a very strong feeling of "timeliness" like its being bounded to that one era it was created it or whatever. still solid
Pretty run of the mill
another MASSIVE gap in my pop music knowledge. I've never listened beyond the Replacements' big songs and singles. I don't know that I would have the nuts to say this in the company of other music fans but I think it stands out more within its moment in history than it does as an all-time great album. It is a great album, but it's more of an evolutionary step than a standout creation? That said, Paul Westerburg is one of those songwriters where if I had written even just one of the all time brilliant classics he dropped a couple at a time on some of these albums, I'd retire and weep every morning with satisfaction. "Unsatisfied" is absolutely perfect.
Blending punk energy with heartfelt pop melodies,
it's okay enough, I'd throw it on again for sure.
Great Proto Punk. 3.5/5
Ajoittain hyvää rokkia. Ei silti taivu 4 tähdelle eli 3,5 tähteä.
Like many people, my only knowledge of The Replacements were their songs “Alex Chilton” and “Can’t Hardly Wait”. This was a nice way to hear more of their material; something I wouldn’t have or ally sought out. I liked this album, but not so much that I’d become a super fan. Strong 3 stars.
later
Meh
Mostly fine. Some questionable lyrics here and there. 3/5
Surprisingly great for the 80s. Feels like quite a modern band. fav = Androgynous
Very hit and miss, but, “Gary’s Got a Boner” aside, had enough about it to deserve the benefit of the doubt and settle at a 3.
Not as "punk" as some of their stuff. Not bad, but not their best IMO.
Another 'nothing special here' album for me. Again, thankful this one was a short listen. 3/5
#100 oppsummerer egentlig lista perfekt. Neeeei.
Nicely spirited punky pop music. Liked the T.rex cover!
Grungey rock
Minnesota light punk
Favorites: 'Favorite Thing' (ironically), Androgynous, Black Diamond, Gary's Got a Boner (instrumentals are sick).
one of my favorite songs with a jane in it
I like some of the replacements' songs, but what the hell do they know about the beatles? Fav song: Unsatisfied
Pre: Heard one of their songs before!
Solid post punk album, some songs were good, others were ok, not essential imo to get a feel for the genre as a whole
Pretty consistent, the songs are just not so memorable for me. Liked the raw and dirty "post-punk" style.
Feel like I should like this More than I do, but it’s p good
nicer and cuter than i remembered !! i liked the part where gary had a boner
I know I am supposed to like this but some of the songs just are not great.
In theory I should like this one, its a genre I like, the premise sounds cool.. But, I dunno I didnt really. It was alright.
What a wild ride of an album. It felt so angsty and counter to everything I usually enjoy, but right after "Androgynous" hits, the album opens up into a more mellow, introspective version that I really enjoyed. 3.5/5.
3.5
I always found them slightly overrated
Would listen again but nothing too special. Black Diamond my highlight. Preferred the faster stuff.
This album shines in the slower moments
This album is a little bit all over the place. Punk, post punk and alternative in one place. However, it is not cohesive and I dtrugglwd to have a good time listening to it
Interesting take.
This album is nice. Musically talking, it is more or less the same than other musical projects of the same style. I wouldn't say it is innovative in any aspect, which is not bad at all, but, then, it has to impress me much to really appreciate it. So, it is not much interesting in the musical aspect, but it has some good songs though. I guess I liked it, but just that.
Don't know anything about this band and have not listened to much of this genre, and being my first album was not knowing what to expect. I will dare you (the first song) sounded decent and got me excited but then the next 3 songs got me worrying and wondering whether to continue or not. But credit to them the next songs redeemed the album. And songs about gender identity in the 80s was quite something. Adrogynous was one of the better songs of the album and the song that forced me to listen to the whole thing. I dont see the hype of this album to be honest, there were a few good songs but i dont know if they were memorable enough for me to go back to the album. Songs that i liked : Adrogynous, Unsatisfied, Answering Machine, and weirdly enough Gary's Got a Boner.
This had to be a favorite of Kurt cobain - very punky alternative. Very raw and to the point. The kiss cover of black diamond took me by surprise. I didn’t hate but won’t go back to it.
Maybe it’s the passage of time and you just had to be there. But this album feels like fairly middle of the road 80s rock to me. I don’t get the hype. Maybe like a cross of REM and Bruce Springsteen. Which sounds cool on paper but I’d rather listen to Springsteen instead. Lead singer has a cool voice though.
Good old rock, nothing too special imo tho
2.8 Some fairly run of the mill punk/post rock it sounds like. Nothing really stands out. Black Diamond is an alright metal song randomly plonked in the middle. But still not great. Not really arsed hearing about someone having an erection. Don't think this changed music, but will now probably read a wiki page about how this impacted everything.
Overall, I like the Replacements’ Let It Be. I like Paul Westerberg’s voice, and I always enjoyed the whole lo-fi, indie slacker type bands. That said, I’m not quite sure that I understand how Let It Be got to be quite so highly regarded as an indie darling record. I imagine it had something to do with the year of its release; I imagine it was pretty counter cultural at the time. But it starts a little slow, and I almost never say this, but this record might actually benefit from some slicker production. But it is what it is, and probably represents who the band was more accurately than some polished studio production. Anyway, it’s a pretty solid record that was probably a really big deal just a few years too early to really connect with me in a really nostalgic way. 3.7/5
great album. reminds me of a lot of the pub rock albums from the late 70s early 80s.
Like this one!
One of those US bands that didn’t really register in the UK. So the nostalgia and youthful support of this passes me by. I enjoyed it but it’s not going to stick.
Pretty good.
The boys are singing about boners. Was this a special event for Gary? Had he been struggling and finally got there? This was a fun record, but not too much stood out to me. The song "Androgynous" was good. I can see that it might be popular today, it seems very ahead of its time. 6/10
Was alright, some waffle but also some cool tracks
Pretty good album that I have never heard before today. It has some nice punk vibes without being too over the top. A nice variety of songs to keep things going. Not bad, it's something that I should have heard when I was younger but didn't have the chance.
I really enjoyed this, and I wasn't expecting to given that it's punk, and I haven't enjoyed the past punk albums I've dove into during this project. My favorites were: "Sixteen Blue," "Androgynous," "Favorite Thing," and "Unsatisfied." Really enjoyed the percussion, guitar licks, and bass in a lot of these tracks. Thoroughly enjoyed this project on the whole, despite not being a huge fan of the wider genre.
just feels a little dated
I liked it! It was a change from my usual music; however, I am unsure if I would return to this album (unless for a specific mood!) I think it sounds like other songs of the same genre (a bit too similar)
Punks get serious about their lives. There’s a world where this album is flabby and boring, but they successfully mix raw guitar music with smooth balladry. I liked it.
Hey, where's Tommy? Someone find Tommy We're out on the road Moving equipment Where's the equipment? Soon we're going home Then we'll have a party (then) Then we'll have a party (then) Then we'll have a party (then) Rock and rollin' 'til the break of dawn (Rock'n'rollin' 'til the break of dawn)
i enjoyed actually!
This album is a typical one from these days, I think, but these usually sound a bit outdated nowadays, so I feel like the songs were nice as a background listen, but properly listening to this would be a bit too much and nothing too exciting, apart from a couple of decent ones, but I would say a bit meh.
A couple of good songs bring this rating up, but I couldn’t really get into most of it
Ain't got time for this
Rauer Indie-Rock mit Charme – „Let It Be“ mischt Punk-Spontanität mit Ansätzen von Tiefe. Einige Songs glänzen, andere stolpern. Kultig, aber nicht makellos.
In theory I would have expected to like this, but I just didn't connect with it. I found it to be doing a lot of similar things with bands that were doing them better, like Nirvana, say. I found "Androgynous" to be so out dated it was hard to listen to and "Gary's Got a Boner" ???? What was that supposed to be. The one track I connected with was "Unsatisfied." But unfortunately it got buried in a bunch of songs that were either forgettable or annoying.
Not bad. Not sure I concentrated hard enough for a better appraisal but I enjoyed having this on
I liked it more than I expected, but not my normal jam
Very good record.
This is very quintessential 80s college rock. It's very much a product of a certain time and environment. A handful emerged from that scene to become major bands, like R.E.M. But there were others like The Replacements who were loved by their early adult cult followings and college radio stations. I was only aware of this band before because They Might Be Giants (who opened for The Replacements in their very early days) wrote a song in tribute to them. Not that there aren't any good songs here. There's some decent indie rock here with elements of punk (most notably in a couple of songs that you definitely wouldn't play for your grandparents). I did find some filler here but there were still good tracks among them.
Liked the first song, kinda fizzled out after
Decent album - quite enjoyed 6/10
not a fan of all songs but a few real bangers on here. I will daaaaaare!
Enjoyed the lyrics on this one. “Androgynous” was the highlight.
carini
I enjoy the punkier sounds of this more than the folk-rock-esque sections. Knowing nothing about this group coming in this was surprisingly good.
Great rock’n’roll band. Too bad chart success evaded them due to bad decisions on their part. Enjoyed this quite a bit.
Liked it
For the time, it’s a pretty innovative album. Not a super big fan though, but wouldn’t skip it if it came on the radio.
I got Spotify ad so I didn’t really listen to just this album, but they passed the vibe check as white men
I can't lie, I didn't not like it... Will definitely give it a second listen, could tell it was a US punk rock outfit.
Paul Westerberg, at the start of an actual songwriting career – that is writing songs rather than riffs – is messy. Paul Westerberg at the height of his songwriting career is messy. I haven't heard anything he's done lately, but I bet it's messy too. None of my favourite Replacements songs are on here. Neither are the catchiest. But it is joyful, reckless, open-minded and messy, much like the life stage it successfully describes. Honestly, I prefer my college rock to have more mystery than messiness, but it would be churlish to disregard the Replacements – it's sincere, it's spontaneous, and it's sloppy. Westerberg becomes more of a craftsman later, but the satisfying ending to Androgenous could never be achieved with craft. 3 This Replacements album is good but it is much cooler than it is good, which makes me quite suspicious of it. There’s a lot of being bored and not caring on this album. ‘I don’t care’ (I Will Dare) ‘I don’t give a single shit’ (Favorite Thing) ‘Let's get this over with, I tee off in a hour’ (Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out) ‘We don’t wanna know’ (Seen Your Video) We are also invited to grasp how little The Replacements care in the ‘live-feel’, complete with a tinny, cheap-sounding delay on the vocal and noisy, random breakdowns and in the grab-baggery of the shifting tempos, genres, instrumentation etc. Oh look - an old piano; why don’t I just do something bouncy and sweet? Um…I dunno let’s do a Kiss cover next or whatever. Dare we listen to Unsatisfied and believe that it was the result of more than a single take of genuine, visceral unsatisfaction after which the producer said ‘So are you happy with that take?’ and Paul Westerberg shrugged? Audibly not-caring has been cool as hell in rock music ever since Bob Dylan stopped trying to sing and started not-really-singing about women that he didn’t care about, in place of political causes that he seemed to. There have been many genuine not-carers since then but I’m not sure that The Replacements are among them. The not-caring here is so multifaceted, so plainly thoughtful, that it comes across as interested. Even the title ‘Let It Be’ is more than just a form of words to not-care by; they picked the title of the last Beatles album because they wanted to show that they didn’t care that the Beatles had it first. Clever squares. 3.5/5
a pleasant and calm listening
ok not really my bag. A bit forgettable could have been better but seemed lazy
Will need to listen to again, I really appreciated some of the more punk tracks.
Pretty good
I’ve not heard of the Replacements before listening to this album, but Apple Music told me that this was their third album with a more mature approach. However, the songs mostly deal with teen angst and one of them has the marvellous title of Gary Got a Boner. Good natured punk fun!
Sounded like an album that would be playing at the record store while I looked through the selection. 3 stars
Not my favorite kind of music. Some songs were ok, a couple I liked, some I didn’t like.
These guys feel like Replacements. The music, sound, and overall vibe are really good, but they don't inspire great investment. Still, you kind of think that if they grew up a little, polished up their writing, they might be great.
Fun sound, but it didn’t really stand out to me in the world of punk/rock. Favourite song: Sixteen Blue
Good, for the most part
Didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it. Pretty decent stuff
Probably would benefit from a relisten but didn’t really jump out at me
Very disjointed. A lot of styles that change without rhyme or reason. None of it's bad but only a couple songs really stood out to me
Tämähän on tällaista punkkariem AOR:ää. Soundi paikoitellen jopa aika Perl Jam oudolla tapaa. Mä ihan tykkään kyllä! En oikein osaa valita riittääkö nelosen asti 3:5
a rowdy goofy album for teenage boys only
I feel like the vocals on this album felt really muted? I wish they were more prominent because I couldn't focus on much else.
A pretty solid punk album. Perfectly fine for what it is. High 3.
Either this album is so familiar to me, or this is the second time it’s been suggested. Overall, I like this album. I don’t love it, so it’s a solid 3 for me
Overall decent album, but a lot of mixed personality. Does it want to be pop/punk/metal/grunge? I’d listen again tho
I liked this album . They had some cool songs.
Decent but not great rock/alt. Nothing super unique or outstanding
One terrible punk song and a bunch of not horrible. The last couple of songs removed me of Nirvana (particularly the singing style), which I found interesting.
Great punk album. Not quite in the sub zone of what I'm into and a bit hard to be fair to it after listening to The Minutemen as yesterday's album. I'm going to hit the three star but it may deserve better.
Pretty good and definitely better than a lot of the post punk stuff on the list. However, I still find it a bit forgettable outside of Unsatisfied, which is a great song.
Not bad but not something I’d turn on.
I like hearing the bridge between punk and what would become alternative. This album seems to be one men in their 50s would like because it's from their youth.
Helt okej
Jorå! Pretty good! Korta låtar :okhand:
“I will dare” didn’t do much for me. It sounded like The Clarks from Pittsburgh. “Favorite Thing is a great track. This band gets talked about a lot. I don’t know if I’ve ever listened before now. I was not expecting “Black Diamond” to be a cover of the KISS song. This is one of my favorite KISS songs and I’m not sure how I feel about this cover. Ok. The cover was alight. Not my favorite, but the spirit was there. “Unsatisfied” grabbed me from the start. Great tune. “Seen your video” is a fantastic instrumental. “answering machine” sounds like Kurt Cobain singing. At the end of this record I’m understanding their influence.
Decent, recognized a couple of songs we didn't expect to reliable indie.
Another one I was pleasantly surprised by. Androgynous feels about 40 years ahead of its time politically, and Answering Machine is cleverly constructed. I was skeptical early, but this won me over by the end.
This was an enjoyable rock album overall. Answering Machine stuck out to me, because it made me wonder how many people are confused by what that even is at this point. Lol. Doubt I’ll go back to it, but I had fun with it.
I can see how this influenced a lot of music I like, and I enjoyed listening to it, but it left me a bit cold.
Although it's not close to being as good as the Beatles' "Let it Be", it does have "Gary's Got a Boner"
Album no. 1001 and the surprise is, there's still more to come. At the moment I have a love/hate relationship with this list, so another 100 albums to go causes some mixed feelings in me. They are exacerbated by records like Let It Be - a random and uninteresting punk album with no punk features in it. Atypical and boring - you can describe a lot of records here this way. Well, I guess I'll just have to push it through.
Lively and solid album. Punky sound. Some silly songs. 3 side of 3.5.
A nice pop/punk rock album
This wasn't bad.
It was ok.
2.5ish
After reading the Wikipedia article about the band and the album, I was curious. Well, you can hear the echoes of punk. I can't recognize a really big development like with other post-punk bands. I didn't find the album annoying but boring. There wasn't a track that made me sit up and take notice and that I would have wanted to listen to again. 3/5
Pretty good. I need to give it another listen though.
The first few songs had me thinking we were heading in some kind of punk-rock direction, which worried me a bit. The album took a left turn though, and I found some safe ground in the trio of 'Androgynous', 'Black Diamond', and 'Unsatisfied', where especially the latter one was very good. The rest of the album continued along this trajectory: some punk-ish rock songs with 'Sixteen Blue' between, which sounded completely different (in a good way). Keep making these types of quite dramatic switches makes the album feel a bit in-cohesive to me. At the end I very much enjoyed the tracks I stated, but the more energetic post and rock songs were not for me at all. In summary I think this puts it at a weak 3. There were some good songs, but most were not to my liking, sadly.
More American Post-Punk / Indie Rock / Alternative Rock / College Rock from the mid-1980s. It's OK, but nothing special.
I have an emotional antipathy to The Replacements. They were the paradigmatic cool-kids bank when I was in high school (that I didn't even hear of until well after high school). While the kids smoking clove cigarettes were listening to The Replacements, I was listening to Billy Ocean. In any event, this was just okay. I can see how a disaffected teenager in 1984 would have loved it, particularly compared to the bulk of music on pop radio at the time. But not earth-shattering.
Not for me but had a bit of life. Earns its 3 for "Gary's got a boner"
I see why this is so influential among the punk scene. I don't love it personally, it is a little rough for my taste, but Androgynous is an all timer.
Kinda punky rock
Fun 80s rock, pretty mellow, nothing stands out, the songs all sounded fairly similar, but it was enjoyable.
Okay, good
This album was very up and down for me. One minute I was loving it the next I wasn't. Also why do I need to know about Gary's boner?
I liked some bits. I didn’t like others. It was short at least?
Nice and fun rock here. A little punk, power pop kinda thing. Nice guitar layering. Might ne the better 'Let it be'
Has a lot of elements I live (punk, rock, a bit quirky) but for some reason it doesn't move me at all. I think it's the songwriting, the songs just aren't great. Should have been great in a live setting though.
OK, I can hear the 90s grunge right around the corner from here, but this is basically boring.
This was good! Very breezy alt rock new wave sound. They didn't take themselves too seriously and you wanted to keep listening. I would definitely listen to this again.
I have a friend that has his own band and this is one of his favorite inspirations so I had to listen to them but for some reason it just didn't excite me like it did him. Maybe he got to see them live or something I don't know.
Meh
Not bad at all
Nothing special
I don't know. Pretty standard rock. Nothing exceptional. Three.
Well worth a listen
The Replacements show up with some range here. “Androgynous” is not a song I expected and this album but was pleasantly surprised. “Unsatisfied” and “I Will Dare” are solid rock staples. Even the goofy songs ‘Gary’s got a boner’ and ‘Tommy gets his tonsils out’ aren’t bad or lacking.
Good listen! Like soft-core punk. Nothing crazy stood out but I would listen to again.
I didn't hate this, but pretty forgettable rock with punk influences. I can't imagine ever going back to this, but again, not terrible.
An enjoyable punk album, from a very neat act. The replacements, for an 80's group has a for me succesfully captured the counter culture idea. The pure rock idea of the album and the polarizing lyrics make it unique for its time period, which I liked. Overall pretty great piece of music. Favorite track: androgynous. Overall score: 7.2.
I don't know this band, and I don't know why, maybe slightly before my time. Quite enjoyed this album
Same hair evolution, same build evolution
alright, fine bus music
6/10 - There were some very interesting titles but not very interesting songs. Overall it was fine
very good
Solid post-punk 7/10
pretty cool rock and roll album with a kick ass cover of “black diamond” by KISS.
3.5
It's alright. I guess for it's time it was something different.
I believe this band influenced some of my favourite bands, but I struggled to really get into it. Top track: Unsatisfied
I guess it’s OK in the ‘post-punk but still a bit punk while being a bit hard rock/pub rock sounding a bit springsteeny’ genre. I did really like ‘We’re coming out’ and was childishly amused by the boner song. Otherwise not particularly memorable.
I have been sleeping on The Replacements for a really long time. Maybe this was not the best album to start on (? I don't know, gotta go ask for fans) but it was pretty enjoyable. Sounds so ahead of its time for the early/mid 80s but occasionally slips into sounding characteristic of that, which is strangely endearing.
As a punk lover, post-punk was never my cup of tea, but I found this album quite enjoyable. I give it a 3 because it's nothing special. I will listen to it again for sure, but I just found it quite mediocre, which is not bad, but there are better post-punk albums than this
Favorite Track: Unsatisfied
The music was pretty good and I didn't mind listening, but nothing really hooked me in. I would be willing to listen again, but right now this is a 3.5 rounded down.
I didn't hate it, but I was glad when it was over.
An enjoyable listen. Nice way to spend an hour dancing round the kitchen while cleaning.
I've not heard this before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. Can see/hear that Clash, Pistols, and Stooges are a big influence. Lyrics seem a bit adolescent, i.e.. Garys got a boner etc, although I guess they were still quite young. And there is a certain charm about some of their songs, e.g., sixteen blue reflects teen angst in an honest way. Might have liked this first time around the mid-80s - similar to the Alarm - and think it would grow on you. A solid 3 stars from me.
I don't know what it is about this one that clicked, but I actually dug a punk album.
apparently a beloved album, sounds like i had to be there to understand still alright though
Mostly fine.
It's fine
okay but not for me
Fun, sad, irritating, one-of-a-kind British rooftop expression.
I can see the potential in it being a semi groundbreaking band. Better than some of the others from that era.
C'est pas le Let It Be que je m'attendais, un peu trop HEURGEURGGHARH fond de la gorge à mon goût
Easy to listen to, but didn't drag me into the songs. More background music on the 1st listen
A little better than I thought.
Good but not amazing. But great but not astounding. Heartfelt but distant. Complete but unfinished
Good album overall but not great voice of singer didnt meet expectations for some songs and should have been sang by someone else in the band.
Not that memorable
"I Will Dare" and "Androgynous" were the best tracks on here. I like that these guys actually wrote songs rather than just put out an album of two chords and unnecessarily aggressive "singing" ("We're Coming Out"). Not a bad listen.
3.5
Its pretty alright, didnt totally grab me, but almost
This has the components of things I like, but I don't love it, for reasons that I'm not quite sure of. Maybe it's Paul Westerberg's voice. I don't _dislike_ it, it just doesn't quite click for me.
No expectations, somehow this band passed me by in period. Grew on me as I listened. 3/5 for now. If I'd stumbled across this when I was 17 I might have liked it more.
Good but I was expecting great. No doubt it influenced Kurt Cobain and the rest of Nirvana. There are good songs but not everything hit for me. Decent but not spectacular.
It was okay I'll give it 3 stars.
Fun listen once in a while but nothing more, like the earlier stuff better.
love these guys, but this wouldn't be the album I choose from them (maybe another one in there, but doubt it).
replaceable
Unsatisfied //
It’s ok, punk and alt, not a fan
Some good stuff, but that interesting overall to me. The bonus material the best part.
I enjoyed this for the most part. Really preferred the more downbeat songs as my favorites were “Androgynous,” “Unsatisfied,” “Answering Machine,” and “Sixteen Blue.” I definitely understand why this is on the list. My only experience with The Replacements before this was the song “Alex Chilton,” which I absolutely adore. This didn’t quite live up to my love for that song, but it was still pretty good overall.
I’ve been long aware that not being familiar with The Replacements is a glaring gap in my music knowledge. I think this is the first album that I’ve listened beginning to end. I really enjoyed this, but need a few more listens: 3.5 for now.
I like the mix of rock & roll and a bit of punk.
The tracks felt like they needed something more to stick in my mind
As much as I enjoy rock and most of its subdivisions, this album was genuinely a mixed bag. The instrumental portions were phenomenal but the vocals were so below average that it sucked the life of out the song. Solid 2.5 to generous 3 out of 5. The vocalist ruined it for me.
This one had bright spots and dark spots, with some tunes being really intricate and well-performed and others just sounding like noise (aka punk). I liked the good tracks a fair bit and hated the bad tracks a fair bit. The Beatles did this album much better. ;) Overall three stars.
Not surprisingly, they were much rougher in their early years. There are notes of things to come but it’s a bit of a struggle to get through this.
Decent US power pop indie from a band u know little about.
I'm usually down with the jangly guitars, and this starts out super jangly with "I Will Dare" then I found out the jangly guitar part was played by Peter Buck of R.E.M.... They fooled me, they weren't jangly at all. They were just dull college rock. Not cool man.
Some fine tunes
I’ve come to expect a lot from Paul Westerberg, this was good but not great. 3.5 rounded down.
not exaaaaaaaactly my thing. liked the first track and androgynous a lot found myself dancing involuntarily to 'seen your video' sounds very ninetees. like sp territory I guess. the 20th century boy cover has veery cool guitar but vocals are mediocre at best. so placebo did it better will surely need to re-listen. I feel like I'll like it much more in two or three more listens
It's fine, it may have hit differently when I was a few years younger though. Favorite track: "Black Diamond," probably.
Not bad.
its right kinda forgettable
# Playlist track - I Will Dare # Notes - I don't dislike much about the album, but there's not much to like either. - Vocals are kind of weak. Some good riffs, good energy. - Can't reprehend it too much for sounding extremely 80s, as I have no idea if they are a cause or consequence of this. - I've got a feeling that I would like it more if I've gotten to this while I was younger.
So so album. I briefly listened to each track but I didn't get good vibes.
This was fine. I'm starting to get real tired of albums that I have the same opinion on the music on song 1, as I do by the time I get to song 11. Just no variety on this (and many of the 1001) albums. Like I didn't have to listen to this whole thing to know I was giving it a 3.
sixteen blue is good, and androgynous, and answering machine. I'd say this is an overall 3 for me. some tracks I didn't mind
Good ol' Replacements. More on the hard side vs melodic Replacements.
A pleasant nostalgic ride - this was like the soundtrack to a John Hughes movie.
Love the post-punk sound. Great album.
Grunge rock before grunge rock. Decent melodies and vocals, but it all kind of blends together with not much distinction between songs. Fortunately, it’s only 33 minutes long. Not my favorite, but not the worst.
Generally pretty chill with a few standout songs.
A nice thematic slide from punk to post-punk to alternative and some infantile indie. Obviously an inspiration to many of those future groups, but cool that it happens over the course of the album
Ok
Some nice guitar moments. Grungy production value kind of hurts the overall quality to me. I like the angst and energy. I wish the hooks were catchier.
Kind of a mixed experience here. Post punk with some indie ingredients. Sometimes they try too hard and then it is all a bit too much. Production is not bad, but I think this would have deserved something better.
Some very nice stuff here. If I could take approx. half of the album it would be a clear "5" but the rest is boring.
Kinda cool. Definitely goes beyond the basic punk or pop-punk sounds which I really enjoyed about it. 6/10
I found some of this tough to listen to. It's just too gruff / not melodic enough for my taste. When it all comes together, though, it's excellent. Unsatisfied is a homerun of a song, and I plan to return to that particular track often.
It's a vibe
It be let
Day 36 - July 7th, 2024 Still hate punk, but this album was actually listenable. 3/5
yeah okay sorry this is not for me. i like one of their other albums but i think that's because they mellowed out a lot more/made their music more palatable or poppy or something
On the fence with this one. Some of the more indie sounding songs were actually pretty good but the album also has a punk aspect to it which I didn't enjoy as much. We'll round up as I know there's much worse 80s British out there plus there being a song titled Gary's Got a Boner. 5/10 (2.5/5)
it’s fine but it’s just an appetizer to Tim & Pleased To Meet Me
Not good, not bad.
I liked the soft punk songs. Nice discovery
I'd heard good things about this album going into it. But... it just isn't that good. Straightforward punk-rock with no risk-taking either musically or lyrically, solid musicianship with no particular standouts, and a mild combination of genres and moods without the album quite feeling like the adventure it was intended to be. The best tracks on And the worst tracks can be identified by their titles alone, even excluding the relatively weak hooks in them (Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, Seen Your Video, Gary's Got a Boner). My favourite track, if only for its nifty doubled guitar/bass melody, is the opener I Will Dare. Androgynous is about as controversial as the band is willing to reach - particularly in a genre defined by its controversy - but it's surprisingly good. The drumming throughout the album is pretty fun, with some good, satisfying fills here and there. The experimentation in guitar sounds, if a little limited, is fun and keeps the listener engaged. In general, the bass closely mimics the lead guitar, so it doesn't stand out as much as it could. A couple of bass solos would've been darn cool. The Replacements aren't necessarily bad in Let it Be. But the Beatles did it better. 3/5 Key tracks: 20th Century Boy, Temptation Eyes, Androgynous, I Will Dare
Struck me on my first listen as enjoyable but not too remarkable. The members of the band were all great at what they did but some of the songwriting fell a little flat. Some songs were very fun and enjoyable. Could be worth revisiting and reevaluating
Let It Be was recorded by the band after they had grown tired of playing loud and fast exclusively as on their 1983 Hootenanny album; the group decided to write songs that were, according to vocalist Paul Westerberg, "a little more sincere." Track 9 is called "Gary's Got a Boner" - very sincere
Jaaaaa, Let it be, magistrale plaat, met natuurlijk het titelnummer, Across the universe, Get back en het prachtige The long and winding... Ow, dit zijn helemaal niet de Beatles? Jarentachtigpostpunk?
The Replacements is one of those bands that seems like it checks all the boxes for me but I'm never fully won over. I appreciate the swings and the work being done here. I just wish I loved it.
Good old fashion punk music. Energetic and melodic. Occasionally they branch out with songs like Androgynous and Sixteen Blue. Love unsatisfied 7.2/10
Meh. Sounds like a typical early 80’s garage band. Easy enough to listen to but nothing stood out.
What way to start a week!
Some of these are a a little too earnest ("Androgynous"), some are downright juvenile ("Gary's Got a Boner"). Altogether a kind of amusing mix, but nothing exceptional
2.5
Uventet post-punk / Tidlig grunge?
Never heard of them but thought it was pretty good. A few tracks I’d skip if listened to it again. But I probably won’t, as it doesn’t offer anything new or exciting to add to my existing guitar based indie rock preference! A low 3.
Solid punk rock album. It has a good raw sound. I'm not much of a punk rocker, but I went through phase when I was younger. I would have loved this then and can see the appeal. 3.5/5
This felt like a punk rock Beatles. I could swear that I knew the replacements but I am hard-pressed recognize a single one of their songs. The vocals range from very poppy to incredibly aggressive. Was worth the listen.
This album falls into the British post-punk era. In the modern day this could still be an Indie-classic. Key songs for me are Sixteen Blue and Answering Machine which has a Van Halen meets Clash flare. I listened to this bop a few times.
This was pretty good. I need to listen again to truly evaluate.
not much to say except that this wasn't really for me... didn't like the vocals or the instrumentation all that much. made me feel like I needed to take a shower.
Good, not great.
Had I been a teen rather than an infant in the mid-80's I probably would have really enjoyed The Replacements. I can't say I love it 40 years later, but it's not bad.
Vocalist reminded me of Kurt from Nirvana, some of the music seemed to draw from them a bit. Melodramatic but hard. 3.0
3,5 flott kraftpopp. aðra umferð.
Enjoyable. The remastered person had too many extra songs tho. Made the album too long.
Quite average spiky punk. Not a single tune stands out.
War ganz cool aber nix besonderes
