⭐ Trodde inte jag skulle gilla denna och mina farhågor infriades. Vet ju att Sonic youth är en vattendelare. Har verkligen svårt för detta och kan inte förstå hur man på allvar kan uppskatta Sonic youth. Som bäst kan man väl beskriva det som monotont skrammel. Bästa spår är Bubble Gum som i alla fall är acceptabel.

almost completely forgettable and annoying walls of sound. if you had shown me the cover and asked me to guess what it sounded like, i probably could've gotten close to what sonic youth did here. it's rare i've skipped a track on the albums we roll that i haven't heard, but I had to skip "Death to Our Friends". and whhhyyyy is "Madonna, Sean, and Me" seven minutes long?? actually don't answer that. i don't fucking care. this album sucks.

Album 15 Top 3 "favorites" off the album: Bubblegum, Madonna, Sean, and Me; Shadow of a Doubt In an honest attempt to be fair, I'll keep this short. It was noisy in a way that was grating. It felt long even at 39 minutes. I put off listening to my next album to listen to some of my favorites instead because I didn't enjoy this one. I did like In the Kingdom #19. Very visceral and interesting. I also liked Bubblegum because it was the end of the album. I tried to appreciate this. At least it isn't Coldplay. Won't be coming back to this one.

So apparently I have previously awarded four stars to two of Sonic Youth's albums. I'll have to revisit them sometime to remind myself why. Another one got two stars, but hell, with the band only just carrying a tune on the best track, "Bubblegum" I can't justify anything more than a single, solitary star... and of course, I have no plans to revisit this one.

Dåliga nyheter. SY har med 5 album i boken! Hur är det möjligt? Vi är alltså inte ens halvvägs. Om förra var trist, når vi ett steg djupare mot botten här. Jag känner allt mer för att kopiera Pernas text om Goo. Är det något de ska ha till sin fördel får det vara att albumet kom redan 1986 och här finns glimtar av ett sound som kunde vara tilltalande i 90-talsindie där själva råmaterial till låt höll. Så är inte fallet här.
Just kind of noisy & whiny (—to my ears, at least.)
Noise just isn't my bag, baby. This reminded me of Pixies. Like 'Surfer Rosa', there are some good ideas here, but they're corrupted by and ultimately lost to all the unnecessary dissonance. Unlike 'Surfer Rosa', I didn't hear ANYTHING enticing enough to want to ever revisit this again; so, even after giving this two playthroughs to prove itself, it's a fail for me.

It's weird. The song "Shadow of a Doubt" was interesting until the woman starting being crazy at the end. Nothing impressive when it comes to vocals. If anything, they are underwhelming. Terrible album. At best, they can be played in the background of a coffee shop at low volume.

I feel it is still an album that understands the experimental as a disorder of elements placed fortuitously and with little intention of forging harmonies, in order to mirror what could be a cycle of discomforts and inner disturbances that were meant to be expressed not only in the music but clearly in the lyrics as well. I value it because I sense a lot of clarity and awareness in the lyrics, in the way youth and its uncontainable, unrestricted thought are portrayed. In some way, the concept becomes implied. I highlight its best song: Starpower.

I barely registered this album while i was working. i think there are a bit too many albums of sonic youth on this list. Because it is nothing special about this album. As i'm closing the end of this list i feel like this has been very biased towards the authors own preferences with an overload of some artist that i don't see as that important or unique. i only heard like 2 songs of sonic youth and after this list i still just remember those 2 but i feel like i have listened to their whole discography after this list. This band is a one hit wonder with a cult following.

My goodness nothing is worse than this. I’m feeling optimistic for what is to come because quite literally you cannot get worse than this. The only POSSIBLE reason this album could be on this list is of influence on what not to do. This was HORRIBLE.

I guess this is kind of experimental, but most of the tracks just don't sound good. I liked the mostly spoken-word Shadow of a Doubt and Bubblegum, the rest were hard to listen to and vaguely unpleasant, which I am sure was intentional.

I like Sonic Youth and all, but no way do they deserve a whopping 5 spots on this list. Daydream Nation, Goo and Dirty are more than enough to get the picture of them. Hadn't listened to this one before though, so I'm not too mad. Really enjoyed "Shadow of a Doubt" and the experimental guitar sounds.
In some ways, this album is approaching a record, it's the only one I've reviewed that somewhat approaches the awfulness of 'The Cramps' album (don't think I'll ever get over the experience of that one, it was horrendous). Couldn't make it all the way through so it's a 1 star for me.

I'm not sure where the praise for this is coming from. Mostly generic skippable noise rock? Some reverbed guitars with washed-out lyrics? Maybe I'm missing something here? On the surface level I feel like this should have resonated with me a tiny bit, but I don't know, this did nothing for me. By the end of it I couldn't wait for it to be over. 1.14 stars
I always knew Sonic Youth were there but had no interest in them at all. Might have heard a track or two before but they must have washed over me as if they never existed. 1. "Tom Violence" Not great, lots of heavy distortion, but pretty whiny and boring. 2. "Shadow of a Doubt" Starts off with whispery vocals in the verse, doinky, artsy guitar, then a hard distorted chorus, ending with whispery verse. Nothing great. 3. "Starpower" This song shows signs of promise, but there's a bridge that doesn't really work. There are things in it that work, but more things that don't. 4. "In the Kingdom #19" Ugh, just bad free verse poetry over what might have been a decent background. But it just screams "look at how different we are." Being different because you're different is cool, being different because you're trying to be different isn't. 5. "Green Light" The mix is terrible. These guys have elements of good stuff, they just can't put it together. 6. "Death to Our Friends" Instrumental. It's okay, don't need to ever hear it again. 7. "Secret Girl" Ugh, stupid niose stuff in the intro. Followed by something that could be a song if they knew how to write a song. 8. "Marilyn Moore" Pretty bad song. It's weird because there might be something there, but they have no clue how to flesh it out, and that's consistent through the whole album so far. So far it's still a solid 2, which is one above being total shit. 9. "Expressway to Yr. Skull" This is just awful. Terrible song. Tugging this bitch back to a 1. Let's hope the last one kicks it up a notch. Just boring crap. Just end the fucking song already!!!! Jesus Christ! 10. "Bubblegum" Best song on the album, a solid 3/10. I'm like 4 albums in and this isn't even the worst or 2nd worst I've heard and it was still pretty terrible.
This is garbage. Apparently this is Sonic Youth's goth phase, so it's like goth crossed with shoegaze and alt rock, but really it's just noise. I'm sure a class of 2 Yr olds could make better music. This is like listening to a manic Street Preachers tribute act but they've forgotten how to play their instruments. One good song.
Well, it's certainly noise... I'm sure the conversation at the time around this album went something like this. "Holy crap! We've never heard a sound like this before! Who knew you could give a bunch of kids instruments that they've never played before, put them in a studio, and they can put something together that tangentially resembles music! Cut, print, ship!" It's the 80's rock version of jazz. Not for me. Thanks.

I love Sonic Youth. Sister, Daydream Nation and Goo are some of my favorite records. They also made some of the most unlistenable music ever, like the Silver Sessions and this record. Very dissonant, soundscapes rather than songs. Too much of a good thing for me. Favorite song: Expressway to your skull

Really wasn't in the mood for this one. If you had no idea that if you hit a guitar it makes a noise for a bit and you had no concept of music then this may have some surprises for you. You'd have more fun picking up a guitar and hitting it at random yourself.

Much like the Velvet Underground, I guess I just don't get this style of music. It sounds like a group of musicians, sitting around in a garage plucking and screwing around while somebody hit the record button. Maybe that's the point? Lyrics are ho-hum. I guess I really just crave more structure to a song (or at least a hook)! I'm not getting anything and while I understand there's people who like this "style" of music and will call this a classic, I can't even make it through 4 songs.
