Okay, this is actually a really good album. If this came before that Yeezus album then this one went to his head and he thought he could take the piss
I’d heard a few of these songs before and as much as I hate to admit it based on how much I hate Kanye as a person, I really loved this album. I really didn’t want to give him my first 5 of this project but I can’t deny the man’s musical talent no matter how much I may dislike him.
da
Favourite, all falls down Not a fan of the skits
Kanye West makes great music and this is an incredibly strong debut album. Even though this isn't even in my top 3 albums of his, it's still a 5 star for me. Again, not generally a fan of skits/interludes but he does a pretty good job on the musical interludes (Graduation Day, I'll Fly Away). The skits I still don't really like that much but they do not affect my rating because the majority of the songs on this album are bangers and the skip button is a wonderful invention. Personal favourites from this album are We Don't Care, All Falls Down, Spaceship, Jesus Walks, Never Let Me Down, Slow Jamz, Two Words, Through The Wire, and Family Business
Fav ye album
“All Falls Down” is one of my favorite songs. I think this is Kanye’s best album. I didn’t get bored and skip any songs!
Where “Dark Twisted Fantasy” was a jerky rollercoaster with its inconsistency, “College Dropout” is a coherent unit with several absolute bangers on it. Loved all the school spirit skits. Never heard them before. Whenever a new song started, I felt the new beat might be my favorite of the album. All so fresh.
As I l mentioned in my MBDTF review, this is one of my favorite Kanye albums, so because of my previous rating and by the transitive property, this album is a five. The only thing I dislike is the number of skits and the story at the very end of the album where Kanye is talking about his come up, definitely glad that’s something rap has slowly moved away from. I wouldn’t blame anyone for ranking this album lower because of that. But for real, what a debut album with so many hits, quotable lines, and excellent social commentary. The early 2000s rap sound takes me right back to middle and early high school, such a nostalgic feel. Had a blast re-listening to this one.
Good
Perfect Hip-Hop album. Kanye proved that you don’t need to rap about drugs and violence to make it in the Hip-Hop world. Favorite Tracks: We Don’t Care, Never Let Me Down, and Two Words
This is one where you gotta review the art not the artist. Such an influential & great album, really shows Kanye’s skills as a producer.
love this album
5 STARS, genius album was absolutely formative for me
I really hate to say this but this was genuinely an amazing album, which I hate solely cause of who he is nowadays. Damnit Kanye.
Oh, this is why we put up with Kanye.
Amazing
Social narratives Rapped over top production Hooks and samples snap
Man this is even better than "dark twisted fantasy" or whatever it's called. This is entertaining, thought provoking, fun, inventive ,catchy. Here's the whitest part of the review: I actually understood the lyrics and got the references!!! This makes hip hop that much more enjoyable. So many other top rappers of this century try to be Edgar Allen Poe, speaking in code, not Kanye. A rapper for all. Plus shout out to all the Reviewers on this site that refuse to listen, because he's a "bigot".You're all now the people screaming from the ocean to the sea in regard to the Palestine situation. So go f*** yourself.
KANYEEEEE LETS GOOOOOOOO unbelievable. The most influential artist of the last 20 years hands down. Fuck yes I love Kanye. The sampling The production The beats The lyrics and the flow 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 Spaceship - how good?!
It’s crazy listening to this now because of what Kanye is and I hate to support him. His lyrics have increasingly become more self centred and sexual which is… boring? But this album shows why he is still famous today.
This is objectively a five. People are just mad cause he hates Jews. Deal with it.
I can’t count how many times I’ve listened to this since it was released in 2004. Absolutely legendary in hip-hop. Netflix recently released a documentary on it. Produced by and rapped over by Ye. This one hits home for me as it was on staple on my iPod nano in 2005. Subsequent albums were not as perfect from beginning to end as this one. “Through the wire” was a song he made after a car accident with his jaw wired shut. “Couldn’t afford a Lexus so she named her daughter Alexis”
Classic Kanye, bumping, smooth self-awareness with a flair for storytelling. This is Kanye at his finest. It’s interesting to come back to this album and I can see where the genius of Kanye came from and the potential to see him lose himself to what he is now. When he raps “ irst Aaliyah, now Romeo must die I know I got angels watching me from the other side”, you can see how he talked himself into his viewpoint that he’s above everyone, because he viewed himself as less than them, but he’s still here. Powerful record regardless. 5/5
All the classic Ye attributes - Jesus worship juxtaposed with a fair dose of megalomania - but toned down enough to highlight his superior producer skills.
One of the greatest albums of all time
I’ll put wires in your jaw like Kanye
In the second installment of ending my inactivity when one of my all time favorite albums arrives, and it’s fitting because the last one was the low end theory,”the fans want the feeling of a tribe called quest, but all they got left is this guy called west”.However this is more than just a guy called west. It’s the birth of a hip hop phenomenon and who I consider to be my all time favorite artist (the glazing is crazy). This is a masterpiece of an album though and what started my Kanye journey and arguably my journey into music as a whole.Kanye shows surprising efficiency lyrically for a guy labeled “just a producer” and the beats’ excellency show why so many people only saw him as a producer.Idk what else to say tbh this album is just goated.
I have an annoyingly deep connection to this album. In every sense of the word, I do find it to be a timeless classic. I think that THIS version of Kanye West, before every single disgraceful and disgusting thing he's done and said in the 20 years since this album has dropped, is Kanye at his best, and this is his best album of the College Trilogy. It's a genuine 5, and I'm gonna keep it there. It would be incredibly easy for me to rate this a 1 based on who he is now, in the year 2024, and move on, and give myself the moral brownie points. I just cannot bring myself to do it; I still basically know every line to every song on here, I still think the production is off the charts, and... to be completely honest, THIS version of Kanye West on this album just resonates with me still. Family Business, Jesus Walks, All Falls Down, Through The Wire... these are all obnoxiously good, and they all remind me of why the guy became a superstar to begin with. I miss that guy, not the anti-semitic Nazi-apologizing Trump supporter he's become. Let me be extra clear: I did not stream the album when I wrote this review. I'm not giving him another cent. I wrote all of this without re-listening, because I know this album that deeply. I still believe it to be a 5, even if the man himself has dropped into the negatives. So, uh... yeah, I listened to Desire, I Want To Turn Into You by Caroline Polachek today instead. Super cool album with a lot of 2000s influence clearly present throughout; definitely worth a listen, and worth all the hype it got in 2023. I'd probably give it like a 4.5, that I'd likely round up after another listen or two.
When this came out, I was 17 and Ioved this album. It holds up. It is bittersweet, though, knowing now how unwell, paranoid, and antisemitic Kanye has become .
unironically and only a lil apologetically, this is SO GOOD. TIL about chipmunk soul. I didn't know that was a Kanye thing. I also liked the use of rock-sort-of sounds (something I think comes in more heavily in some of Kanye's later music) and tasteful use of autotune (imagining going back in time and saying that to my 2004 self and chuckling) I laughed out loud at some bits. appropriate criticism of the idea that education = good to the point that educated = worthy, without ever attacking the educated. also felt very personal. good album
First album on here that I have listened to prior. My favorite artist. I don’t need to write anything, so I won’t. Except, that it’s not my favorite Kanye album. Standouts: All Falls Down, Spaceship, Jesus Walks, Slow Jamz, Through the Wire, and Family Business.
One of the best rap albums of all time. The cry baby bitches who give this a 1 without even listening to it kiss their dads on the mouth.
One of the greatest rap albums in of all time. Profoundly fun yet moving couldn’t ask for better and Kanye’s catalog later in could not top this one.

On the week that Ye and Ty Dolla $ign released Vultures 1, it's impossibler to listen to The College Dropout without Ye's current persona getting in the way of an honest take. He is so lost in his own ego, it's unbelievable. But The College Dropout is a GREAT album. It still sounds fresh, full of energy and hope, and a pretty decent message for young folks to grab hold of. When this came out, Kanye was someone you could feel good about rallying behind, even rooting for. He encouraged people to be better. Now he's a mess. But this record is fantastic.
We all know who this guy is and how he acts. If you just look at the guy as a crazy artist the man is genius and this album does nothing but reiterate that. Almost every track is a banger, up to 11 and enjoy one the greatest rap albums and collective piece of work in that genre.
Every song an absolute banger. I miss the old kanye.
Amazing album. Paradoxically, the last one I listened of Kanye.
We Don’t Care // All Falls Down // Spaceship // Jesus Walks // Never Let Me Down // Slow Jamz // School Sprite // Two Words // Through The Wire // Family Business
The man sucks, but this project is the first time I've listened to his music. Probably won't listen again, but I can't deny that it's extremely well-made. Shame to find a great album that I'm only willing to play once.
Great album. Lots of Marshall Matters LP vibes, richness in sound and compositions.
Not much of a Hip-hop/Rap fan but this album is among the best I heard when it released. It still holds up 20 years later.
I recall when this album came out in 2004. It was just different from the other rap that was out at the time. The mix of Kanye's social observations, humor and samples made this album a joy to listen to. "Through the Wire" was the first song I heard and I kind of miss Kanye doing these more stripped-down and less bombastic songs. "If my manager insults me again, I will be assaulting him" is still one of my favorite underrated lines on this album. I could relate to that feeling at the time. A must-listen.
Great album, bad man
Espectacular, qué gozada de disco. Se nota que está hecho con mucho cariño y ganas
I’ll be honest I haven’t listened to this since I was a kid and I regret it. This album is incredible. I am a bit biased bc I’m a huge Kanye fan but the samples and features on this album are insane. The pitched up gospel samples are untouchable. There will never be another album like this. The skits also fit perfectly and aren’t out of place like a lot of the ones featured in other rap albums.
great album from start to finish.
Very very cohesive album. Fun hearing Kanye rap like the rents due instead of rapping like the landlord. 8.7 but a great reminder how great MBDTF and DONDA are and his growth. Also late registration > college dropout .
Classic album
Not his best work but it’s up there. Didn’t change the game quite yet but it was a breathe of fresh air. Especially for those who weren’t down with the rugged, braggadocio, get money fuck bitches era of rap at the time.
Kanye’s debut - it’s a great album, breaking new ground for its cheekiness and production.
9/10 Rap suave con producción instrumental de 10.
Know it well. Love it. Sounds like high school. Kanye (the musician) really is brilliant. First I ever remember hearing pitch shifting in rap music, which became mainstream and far overdone ~5 years later. Great cadence on his flow. Awesome sampling that stiches together flawlessly. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes serious lyrics. Cool to see a concept style album where the songs fit together. Similar to country music, most rap is solely focused on lyrics, so it's always a breath of fresh air to hear an album with a lot of thought put into the sampling, beats, and arrangements.
A classic. All Falls Down, Jesus Walks, Slow Jamz, Through the Wire. I love the commentary as well.
Loved it. Forgot how good Kanye used to be.
Good Beat
Love this album. Kanye at his goofiest
all falls down
Muy relatable a los 23 años, abajo la academia 😤😤😤. No notes Kanye. 5/5
Already heard this classic. One of the best hip hop albums of all time.
5 star album by a 0 star human.
Great album. Really liked Jesus Walks. Loved the story during Last Call. Hard to believe this was 20 years ago. Glad he dropped out…
I really don't understand the people here that leave a bad review or don't even bother to listen to the stuff that Kanye has made just because of the recent events concerning him. Yes, the path that he took on now is nothing short of horrendous, but I don't think so that it should be a reason to completely disregard his very rich and artistically valuable legacy. There is no doubt that Kanye is an extremely talented artist. Still, he unfortunately does suffer from a mental illness which can be often uncontrollable. So though it technically, physically, might the same person now, on a personal level I'd dare to say he's completely different person. So in this case I think people should learn to separate art from the artist and not just denounce all of the wonderful work this man has done over his long career because of who he's become now. Understand that nothing is ever black and white. Really good album. Glad this app made me listen to all of it. 5/5
Maybe best rap album ever
Probably my favorite Kanye album, one of the greatest to ever do it Top tracks: All Falls Down, Jesus Walks, Get ‘Em High, The New Workout Plan, Slow Jamz, Through The Wire
I liked it. Very nostalgic, early uni album. I forgot how many songs I liked on it. Production and samples top notch. Going for a second listen
Brilliant. Had it on twice in a row. Beats are great and the sped up samples so distinctive. Nice variety of subject matter. Shame he went completely off the reservation more recently
Don’t like Kanye, but this album is amazing.
Classic Kayne, I miss this guy. Now he is batshit crazy
Great album with lots of bangers. Not much more to say 5/5 rap album.
I like the old Kanye
unfortunately it’s really good
Best Kanye album. Masterpiece
One of the best debits ever. Yeah, he turned out to be a complete piece of Musk but for a glorious decade he was incredible.
Awesome debut album
Impressions: While Kanye West is problematic as a person, he crafts all these perfect albums. Every album is an instant 5/5 💯 Favorite tracks: We Don’t Care, All Falls Down, Never Let Me Down, The New Workout Plan, Slow Jamz, Two Words, Rating: 5/5
Get em high and breathe in breathe out are 2 mid songs but just about everything else on this album (including skits) is good, great, or incredible. Songs like Jesus Walks show Kanye's ability to make a smash hit while the school spirit skits show his humor. The New Workout Plan is one of the most unique hip hop songs I know and shows the creativity of Kanye in his beats, lyrics, and songwriting. Through the wire shows might be his best sampling. And finally, Two Words, one of Kanye's most underrated songs, shows Kanye's ability to bring the best out of features in his tracks to make truly unique and fantastic songs. Prob a 9/10 album but a 5/5 for this list.
I get people hate Kanye, but you need to respect the absolute rip of an album this is. The singles hit, the deep cuts hit, the skits hit. Through the Wire is my 2nd favorite song on the album bc the lore behind it. Last call IS my favorite song because the lore within it. I actually love the story Kanye tells at the end of this song. Family Business I used to put on in the whip on the way to school every AM for some reason it was my jam back then. This album (and most on Kanyes early albums) have been a part of my life for 10+ years. There is so much meta on this album its hard to give it anything besides a 5. Then you get your masters masters. Because yk whats gonna keep me warm at night? Thats right, my degrees.
Cool and playful lyrics and production. I will be listening to this one again
Been a while since i listened to this one all the way through. How does one man make so many hits. Its just ludicrous no pun intended
One of the all time classics
Rating: 10/10 One of my favorite albums and one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. This was one of the first rap albums I ever heard and made me immediately love Kanye's music. There is a genuine nature of this album I have not heard before or since (in hip-hop at least) and the lyrics exemplify this. The variety of lyrical topics include Kanye and the black community's struggles, self reflection, religion, critique of college and college culture, family, and braggadocio, with humor sprinkled into a lot of the tracks. Put some fantastic production on top of this (chipmunk soul) and you get a classic album, every song on here is fantastic.
It's a shame that Kanye West has become such a deranged tool as the music he used to make was top tier. This album is fuckin' incredible and has to be enjoyed outside of the scope of West himself.
Divine
audio quality is excellent, vocals so clear, great
Early Kanye is the best Kanye. His ego was still ginormous, but he was hustling 24/7 and didn't take anything for granted. I firmly believe he's a better producer than he is a rapper, but he's firing on all cylinders in both categories on this album. Add in guest stars like Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def, and you've got as solid an album as you're going to find.
Kanye West twenty years ago is not the same person/persona we know today. And as problematic as he is now, he's one of the most talented artists of our time. This album is sharp, imaginative, and poignant. He masterfully blended rock, soul, rap, electronic, spoken word into one cohesive album. I love Kanye's work, especially his older stuff. 5 stars.
I miss the old Kanye. [deeeeep sigh.....] He's so good. Part of the problem is he knows he's so good.
This is only the second album I've gotten since starting this list that I actively listened to prior. The first being Thriller. Just like Thriller, this is a genre-defining album. One of the few hip-hop albums I would argue that you could say "If you're only going to listen to one hip-hop album..." I love the majority of Kanye's discography, and his personal life aside - the man makes great records. That's on full display here, as his first album, Kanye alone played a major role in all aspects of the production of this project. He's always been the key creative force behind every one of his records, but as his albums progress, his collaborations with other creatives increases. I believe this record was a novel at the time due to Kanye's use of mainstream popular rappers, with underground "if you know you know" type rappers all on Kanye's signature sound. This blending of styles makes every song a fresh new experience and I really believe there isn't a boring section of this record. Every song is a different vibe. It weaves through uplifting, dark, political, religious, gangster, humorous tracks one after another without ever skipping a beat. There are moments on here that are very 2004, but for the large majority - this record is timeless. A hip-hop staple that will be remembered forever.
I’m a Jew but this album was so good I believe in Jesus now
Yes he's an asshole now but god DAYUMN do his old albums slap. This and 808s, pioneering projects.
Can’t help myself
Legendary
Good
This is a classical album
SO GOOD. I know kanye has become a problematic figure but this album was no skips (even the weird skits) from start to finish. faaaaaaantastic. I love through the wire and all falls down but jesus walks was low key a bop too.
Chipmunk Soul & Hip Hop with lots of real instruments including violin and grreat bass lines. "All Falls Down" "Spaceship" (samples Marvin Gaye) "Jesus Walks" "Never Let Me Down" "Get Em High" "The New Workout Plan" "Slow Jamz" "School Spirit" (chipmunk sample of Aretha Franklin) "Two Words" "Family Business"
I love this album but fuck kanye
Um...wow!! Surprisingly good. I had never listened to this entire album before. It's really good!!
speaks for itself. 7/7
mágico uno de los mejores discos de rap de la historia
Already heard but lesssgooo
One of the best.
C'était cool. J'avais jamais trop écouté celui-ci, mais surtout les deux d'après (j'imagine qu'ils viendront sur la liste après). What happened to you Kanye ? Ca partait pourtant si bien...
thank god he watched 21 jump street
Knew it already, Great stuff
Biased towards rap because it's my favorite genre. This is my favorite Kanye album and I think he has a multiple classics. This is one of the best albums ever to me and I've never gotten tired of listening to it.
cool!!!
Amazing Vibe!
- Literally just listened to this for the first time like 2 days ago lol - Really good, really fun - All killer no filler energy - I get why Kanye got as big as he did - 9.5/10
Fuck Kanye but I love this album
5/5

A great album from a horrible person.
Mto bom
Kanye’s debut album.
Top 10 all time Hip Hop albums. Kayne's influence on Music is understated, ask your kid who the greatest of all time is, you'll be surprised.
one of my favorite rap albums of all time. the skits are as cringy as ever, the subject matter is often deeply misogynistic, and kanye is objectively a horrible person, but this entirely changed the landscape of hip hop. an astounding debut album, and through the wire still gets me going. there’s something incredible in every song here.
It bangs
Don't blame anyone for giving this one star, Kanye is a terrible person. This is still one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time
Kanye is sketch AF but the album is good.
Fantastic
One of Kanye’s finest albums. Great listen.
Fun as hell
блин, так приятно начать слушать вдумчиво канье с такого расслабона (особенно понимая как поедет он дальше кукухой)
Great Album, they do not make them like this anymore
Great album, nice throwback to the proper Kanye music. Good to chill to.
Man fuck Kanye as a person, but this album is so fucking good. I got this in my rotation heavy already. It really is baffling that the guy who made this album and said "George Bush doesn't care about black people" ended up a fucking republican and worse, a Nazi. I'm not gonna gush too much about it, but this was so extremely influential in hip-hop that he basically shaped the next 15 years of hip-hop after this album after. From the production to the flows to the personal content of the album this was such a home run. Hate the man, but love the album this is a light to decent 5 out of 5 no doubt.
My favorite album of all time PERIOD. I wasn't really expecting there to be any Kanye on here so I was very pleasantly surprised. Everything about this album is just incredible from Kanye's early soul sample production to the incredible cast of mid 2000s rap legends on here, not to dismiss Kanye's rapping and singing on this album at all because that's also amazing. The skits are some of the only skits on any album that I actually find funny and well done, Late Registration's are also great though. All around incredible album and incredible listening experience could not recommend more. All Falls Down is also my favorite song of all time. Favorite Tracks: We Don't Care, Graduation Day, All Falls Down, Spaceship, Jesus Walks, Never Let Me Down, The New Workout Plan, Slow Jamz, Breathe In Breathe Out, School Spirit, Lil Jimmy Skit, Two Words, Through The Wire, Family Business, Last Call
I want to start off by saying Kanye West is one of my least favorite people on the planet, and I hope he gets the help he needs because it’s warranted. That being said, I want to rate this album as a true album separate from the artist’s antics, and it’s great. I bought this on CD on a whim at a truck stop between Texas and Pennsylvania as a teenager. I think I had heard one or two songs on the radio and thought I’d give this CD a chance. It was perfect for that long car ride up and back, and the album was on repeat. “All Falls Down”, “Jesus Walks”, and “We Don’t Care” were on repeat. It might be nostalgia talking a little bit, and I was exposed to this well before Kanye went crazy, but I still look on this album fondly and find myself listening to a song or two from it periodically. 5/5 but I’m slightly ashamed to be doing so.
He's a really bad person and I hate him for that, but I cannot deny he has made some of the best hiphop music ever.
Ah what an absolute corker. Shame he's an absolute bell-end and beyond that publicly anti-semitic amongst other less-than-shining attributes. The recent events make reviewing his older work very complicated and confusing. But I've always loved this album a lot it's one of my favourites and hugely nostalgic of a teenage era of life, the skits take me to another time and place in my head. The rhymes, lines, and riffs are absolute pure genius. So so clever and an insight into a very different mind, very big shame he has now ruined it all. I'm rating 5 as an appreciation of this old work but begrudgingly because I'm very pissed at this man.
Probably my favourite Kanye album, absolutely brilliant. Good mix of fun, serious, happy, sad, just hits the right notes. Shame he's a twat but it's a right banger.
One of the most impressive debut albums in hip hop.
Amazing album. Strange that he is aligned with christo-fascists these days
Joku sanoittikin tuolla jo sanasta sanaan ajatukseni: "At the time of The College Dropout's release, every pop rap record consisted of bad gangsters rapping about the difficulties of growing up in Detroit, robbing stores and spraying your rivals with a glock. Kanye changed this with humorous, touching lyrics, extremely rhythmic optimism, fire beats, and a touching and honest view of his own faith and failures. He inspired a generation of rappers to express themselves more genuinely and explore more alternative forms of hiphop, and it's something I still greatly admire him for. An easy 5/5." Mielestäni kaikkien aikojen paras rap-levy ja ehkä myös paras pop-levy.
4.5
Wow so fun!
oh been waiting for this one. 5
Legendary
damn bitch what happened
top 5 hiphop
Fuck Kanye. But GDI his early stuff is just so good. Have to separate the artist from the art sometimes I guess...
It's personally difficult to fully grasp how pivotal this album is for Kanye and hip-hop in general. I tried to be egregiously critical (or nitpicky, I guess is the better term) of this album as it is not my favorite Kanye album. I actively tried to not give this a 5 but I definitely forgot how consistently good the album is. I _think_ my one gripe besides a song or two is that Kanye went really skit heavy towards the back end of the album. I guess it makes sense given that Kanye really likes skits/outtakes when he listens to music so this album, in a way, is a reflection of that. Also, I think the mixing/mastering is interesting. It feels its age, definitely. It sounds boxy. It was like the first thing I noticed when We Don't Care started playing. I think this is excusable as it only got better with future releases. Will we ever get an explanation on why Kanye said on Two Words, "So I live by two words: Fuck you; pay me."? That's four words. One thing this album does better than other Kanye albums is that his humor really shines through this album. Sure, there are corny, funny one-liners in songs in other albums but there are whole bits that aren't meant to be taken seriously here. Examples of this would be The New Workout Plan, all the skits belittling the value of college degrees, and the build up to Twista's verse in Slow Jamz just to name a few. Feeling a light 5 on this one. If this whole 1001 album experience was a tier-list ranking, TCD would be in S-tier but probably at the far-right of it just like where Kanye is at now politically.
In 2023, Kanye West is a maniac. He is an attention whore with a bizarre clothing line, a MAGA weirdo and a stain on culture and society who is surrounded by Yes Men. But in 2004 when he came out with The College Dropout, then Late Registration and finally Graduation? The absolute KING of rap for a few seasons. It was a pleasure to re-listen to The College Dropout. Amazing album! Great skits and bouncy, lighthearted and beautiful rapping and rhyming. All Falls Down was the first KW song I heard, and it’s still excellent almost 17 after I first listened to it. Other hits include Jesus Walks, Slow Jamz (fast rappin from Twista!), Never Let Me Down, Through the Wire and smooth, light and family-focused track Family Business. One you can nod your head to. What ever happened to this likable version of Kanye?!
This feels a LITTLE bit like being "yeah but have you seen Hitler's paintings they're pretty good" / separating the art from the artist but I simply can't go lower than a 5. It's such a shame, I think he really does need help for a couple different disorders and is also a deranged ultra rich guy. Nice to travel back to when his feet were still on the ground.
Listening to this, you can’t help but sigh and wonder where it all went wrong. This is a fantastic album and it’s not even his best work. The sampling is out of this world, the rapping is clean, smart, and funny. Jesus Walks is a classic, but imo it does kind of foreshadow his later Christianity overload. Still, a triumph.
I have not listened to Kanye since he became a nazi but man this was great to hear. What an excellent album musically. “We Don’t Care” is a powerful mission statement and has to be one of the best track 1s on a debut album ever. The skits I would be happy to never hear again (especially the one making fun of people who get degrees) but the songs were all on point. Phenomenal production, biting commentary on race and lots of humor throughout. There is a of course a strain of intellectualism here which makes his support for trump less surprising in retrospect. I MISS THE OLD KANYE.
A hip hop masterclass from a world class asshole
Where did it all go wrong Mr West
It's inventive, knows what it's grounded in really well, the features are all brilliantly selected, the samples are all used effectively, the tunes are banging, the rapping is great and the lyrics are not only refreshing but also genuinely funny and memorable a lot of the time. 5
I wanted to not like this because Kanye is... yeah. But, damn it was really great (could do without the skits though)
Grounded Kanye was a thing of beauty. This album was the culmination of at least 6 years of work as a producer and it shows. Every track is inspired and unique, well written, clever, and produced to perfection. Kanye's like seemed to take a dark turn somewhere between Graduation and 808s, it's sad really. I truly do miss the old Kanye.

Ele sabe que é o maior
You know where I stand.
This album resonates with me.... And I have good memories of it. Its sillly and creative and hits hard and has variety. It doesn't feel like the hip hop that I dislike. It has a story and a message.
Classic early 00's hip-hop. Without the sketches would be perfect. Still can't rate it lower than 5 because it's better than a 4 for sure.
We Don’t Care- Catchy and poignant 👍 All Falls Down- Another catchy hook, with lyrics about consumerism 👍 I’ll Fly Away- pretty rendition of a hymn leading into next track Spaceship- I really like the chorus, GLCs verse lacks for me a bit 👍 Jesus Walks- This is a powerful track, if feeling a bit put on at times Never Let Me Down- Kanyes verse is amazing, Jay Z flexing as usual 👍 Get Em’ High- meh The New Workout Plan- This is good, but not something I would want to listen to a lot, and its defo v dated Slow Jamz- a nice slower track, with some v accomplished rapping 👍 Breathe In, Breathe Out- this is fine, nothing special School Spirit- Another catchy track, also the censoring is pretty funny 👍 Two Words- Again accomplished but feels a bit dated Through the wire- v interesting story I didn’t know about 👍 Family Business- Cool sampling, evocative stories but also annoying children voices lol Last Call- Pretty self indulgent but interesting Ambitious and accomplished album, 5/5
Kanye's best album.
Jackson Pollock: Well I know it well, and its a 5. Fav tracks: Jesus Walks Two Words Family Business Last Call Through the Wire Never Let Me Down All falls down Least Favs: The New Workout Plan Skits Overall: While not my personal Kanye favourite album. Its an amazing debut with a lot of songs I love. The skits are not too punishing. It is a tiny bit bloated, but not many wasted tracks to be fair. Its probably slightly on the low side of a 5. Like a 9.2.
It's remarkable how lucid and uplifting this album is. I would not have thought that Kanye was capable of making music like this given his current state.
One of my favorite albums. Bummer Ye has gone off the deep end and now I have mixes feelings about it.
So many similarities between the debuts of Kanye and Eminem - both angry with “things to prove” and machine gun sprays of words. The chipmunk soul of Kanye makes this album inimitable (well, at least until it was imitated to death in the late 2000s), but it’s damned weird to see the sociopolitical trajectories of them both two decades later.
Awful man. Amazing album.
Alright people, breath in, breath out - let’s leave Kanye’s persona at the door, and please know that We Don’t Care what your preconceived notion of rap music is. That’s my intro. This is album is perfect when you are stuck doing a mundane task you don’t want to do, like data entry. Because it’ll fire you up so much that you’ll throw that laptop right at your bosses face, as your career all falls down. First and foremost, it’s a masterclass in production. I haven’t heard a hip hop album with the variety and ingenuity of these beats. Kanye’s roots as a beat maker is on full display here as every song feels completely different from the others. Guy has enough background singers to make even Pete Davidson jealous. Kanye may be an ego maniac, but his music has always been about taking risks and pushing creativity. Which includes incredible features. Kanye’s songs are never afraid to put other people in the spotlight, and in that sense you might say he’s…selfless? …nah. I find the songs so good that I actually don’t really want to hear the skits, even if they are slightly entertaining. Especially, since I’m being reminded of the fact that my BComm isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. Something that my student debt reminds me of everyday. They never let me down. When looking for the best track on the album, I just have two words: Jesus Walks. I’m no “god-bro”, but the song makes me want to run through the wire of a chain link fence. Overall, the songs on this record are incredible, even if Kanye is not an incredible person. But the best part: I got a free workout plan in the form of a downloadable PDF after I signed up at kanyewest.com , which inadvertently put me on several government watchlists.
This is Kanye's first album and I still think it's the best showcase for his rapping. He went on to make even better overall albums and albums I enjoy even more but he clearly had something to prove on this one and it features some of his best lyrics. His vocal performances are also brimming with charisma and energy. I love how he doesn't just rap -- every verse is a full performance, emphasizing the emotions, underlining the jokes and finding fun games to play within the rhymes. He has a big, over-the-top style. There's no mistaking him on a song. And of course you could listen to this and just enjoy his production work. Man, I still can't believe how good "Jesus Walks" is. It's so layered. There are so many classic tracks on here ("All Falls Down," "Jesus Walks," "Get Em High," "Breath In Breathe Out," and "School Spirit" are my favorites) that I can easily forgive the supremely stupid (but also pretty funny) "Workout Plan," the self-indulgent closer "Last Call," and the dumb skits about the guy with all his degrees. ---- I've written on here already about how I felt conflicted approaching the music of one of my all-time favorites after, you know, he declared his love for Nazis. 🙄 I hope he gets help. I hope he makes music again. But either way, I've decided that I have too many good memories listening to his music that I won't let anyone take that away from me. Not even the guy that made it. 🤷🏻♂️
I'm going to wait until Steve posts his review and I'll just echo that. This is of course a 5/5. Something that I found interesting was how Kanye started to steer the direction of rap away from gangsta rap, although some of that genre's lyrical subject matter also exists here on this album, like drug dealing/addiction, poverty/struggle. This might not have been THE album to do it on it's own, but it definitely was a part of the conversation. "All Falls Down" "Jesus Walks" "Through The Wire" are 3 truly amazing rap songs and easily some of the best to come out of the genre.
Wow. He was a genius.
So I think this was the first album I ever knew every song to and listened to consistently. Growing up the songs on this thing were everywhere for me so the nostalgia is just unbearable. I love every single bit of it - the beats, the features, and Kanye’s absolutely hilarious and creative writing. This will forever be one of my favorite records. 10/10
Most people prefer this era of Kanye, as it’s much more uplifting and soulful, both in terms of lyrics and production. After his mum died his music got a lot more experimental, noisy and generally unhinged… which I actually prefer. His debut album, however, is an exception for me. So many bangers on here, but I have to mention The New Workout Plan. It has those disjointed strings playing throughout, and a beat switch near the end accompanied with talk-box vocals. Overlaying this are genuinely funny lyrics, which brings the whole thing together and makes it one of my favourite Kanye songs. Shit SLAPS. The story behind Through the Wire is very unique and is technically great as well. Jesus Walks may have converted me to Christianity. The skits are actually funny and don’t get boring on repeat listens. Even the Last Call, which is mostly him talking over a beat, is enjoyable. All in all, I prefer TLOP, but this is still God-tier and deserves a 5.
Oh ya
I don't really know why people like Kanye. Jesus Walks slaps but the other songs feel just okay, I didn't mind them playing. But he's a nazi so he gets a 5
Man... This album was golden. There's a lot of great songs and each one is different from the last. It has some beautiful vocals supporting a lot of the tracks and some great humor spread throughout. Usually I get a bit fatigued listening to entire albums after about 30 minutes, but I was able to listen through this whole album no problem. Great great great stuff.
He's gone off the rails lately but you can't deny this album absolutely slaps. Really didn't expect to enjoy this much at all but have to hand it to him, it's a masterpiece.
What a pleasure to be around and enjoying Kanye before he became a complete cunt. Jay really did have classics to his beats. So did Kanye.
Love the album. But godamn it Kanye
One of the greatest albums of all time. Shame he turned out to be a nutter.
E ben bunu biliyom
I miss the old kanye
Unfortunately it slaps
gas goat gas goat
kids sing, kids sing😃😍
Geweldig debuutalbum van een grote koekwaus. Staat niks op wat slecht is, al ben ik geen grote fan van skits.
Legit Kanye, that was more genuine and personable and humble.
5/5
obviously a long favorite and a classic. my favorite songs off this album are all falls down and through the wire, two words is growing on me as i get older and the new workout plan is one of the funniest songs ever
dang, an album back from when Kanye shared solid music instead of crazy ideas and hate. Tracks speaking to the pressure and expectations of everyone going to college and the black experience really encapsulates a lot of this early 2000's.
He’s a massive 🍆 but it’s a great album
I'd always wondered about the hype around Kanye, but had never listened to his early stuff. Wow, this is poss one of the best hip hop debuts I've heard. Great album. Shame about how things turned out.
Rating: 10/10
Classic Kanye
I like Kanye West
Despite my score for this album, I chose not to listen to it as an indictment of what and who Kanye has become as of late. The act of separating the art from the artist is an increasingly blurry line, given that the art the artist provides us all with has helped enrich our lives for the better and gives us meaning to which we shall adhere to; and Kanye has done that for close to twenty years of his career, which makes his trajectory into the MAGA hat donning, White Lives Matter shirt wearing anti-Semite that he has become all the more saddening. There is no way, no way in which the current Kanye and this Kanye are the same guy. The College Dropout Kanye was someone whom we all saw as being part of us, someone who did not adhere to what was the status quo of hip-hop at the time. Someone who made us feel okay with wearing polo shirts and backpacks and being a mama's boy. In spite of the seeds of his megalomania sprouting and spreading, he kept his toes on the ground and stayed a relatable figure all the while changing the face of not just hip-hop but of music for the next decade. At this point, the old Kanye is pretty much gone and we might have to face the facts that this latest version of Kanye is going to end us all. Jokes on us, indeed.
Best album yet
One of Kanye 's best Albums For me this was a great introduction for Kanye 's music and I think ist's an Inspiration to many Rappers All in all Just great music
The flow is insane on this album. I feel that an album that is meant to be listened to in order throughout is a dying art and was revived with this one. Kanye West's best album in my opinion and one of the best rap albums of all time. There is a reason why this album always comes up in top 10 lists.
Brilliant hip hop album, and probably Kanye's best in my (possibly controversial) opinion. It's Kanye back when he had a somewhat manageable ego! It's not a perfect album however. It's very long at 75 mins, I would have cut at least 20 of that. I normally don't like skits on albums but the School Spirt ones are quite funny. 9/10 Fave Tracks: We Don't Care, All Falls Down, Jesus Walks, Get Em High, School Spirit, Through the Wire Least Fave: Workout Plan, Slow Jamz, Breathe In Breathe Out
W one of the favs
Classic let me skip albums pls
I love this album and it’s a constant in my rotation. Not much more to say about it bc it’s legendary
Awesome
Iconic, great album singles connect together well. And some singles that can stand on their own well.
Not even the most pretentious song in history (Last Call) can ruin this album
One of the best Kayne Albums and greatest rap albums of all-time.
Love it! Lyrically awesome!
Between this and Yeezus it’s crazy how much Kanye’s sound has developed over a decade. While I like yeezus more, this is still great music. Very innovative and unique while still very much sounding like a 2004 rap album. The mix of religion and typical hip hop themes is interesting here before it got completely overdone in his later albums. New workout plan and I’ll fly away both have great beats
Classic
I heard it a bunch when it came out. Loved the hell out of it, but I think I like Late Registration a little more.
Thank you Kanye, very cool! Kanye's best album, it's all downhill from here - musically and mentally! Before the man lost his mind and developed a god complex. Bangers like "Jesus Walks", skits that don't completely ruin the momentum of the entire album, some of the best beats ever.. yeah I think it's pretty good.
THE NUMBER RAPPER IN THE WORLD, THE GOAT
As much as it pains me to say this … this album is amazing. One of the best debut albums for an artist.
In which Kanye deals with his insecurities about not having finished college. The central message attacking education is fundamentally stupid. All that being said - this is one of the wittiest hip hop albums you ever heard and the range of topics and beasts keep the album bopping along. Despite the negativity of the theme, it’s surprisingly light and Kanye really does redefine what rappers can talk about on a mainstream record. All of this maybe made easier by some superb soul samples and Kanye’s skills behind the boards are simply outstanding. Guest rappers bring their A Game - not just in it for the pay cheque - and West straddles the mainstream (Jay-Z, Ludacriss) with the underground (Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli) without feeling like different projects crowbarred together. Despite the length there’s barely a weak track amongst them. Jesus Walks sounds phenomenal, Through the Wire has a whip smart flow, whilst jaw literally wired shut from a car crash, All Falls Down is a great almost-sample (try and find the actually Lauryn Hill sample version) and there’s a lightness to Slow Jamz and Workout Plan unusual on a rap album. This album sounds nothing like West’s later masterpieces but seeds are there for an artist flexing his creative muscles and taking whatever direction his genius takes him.
this is easily one of the greatest rap albums of all time
Listened to this in repeat since it came out when I was in high school. It's the sound of my youth ❤
Ahh FFS. He's actually good isn't he. Not consciously avoided him but have somehow got this far without listening to him or much awareness at all besides the daft shite he gets up to in public life. But this is bloody good. Never Let Me Down is pretty special. Have tried tracks on their own in the past and just shrugged. Maybe I was never in the mood. This is ridiculously good actually. Surely one of the all time greatest debuts. Guess I'd better check the other good ones.
My oh my. Huge Kanye fan, and this year watched Jeen-Yus so I have developed an even greater appreciation for this album. The things Kanye did, and the lengths he went to to put this album out is a testament not just to who he was at the time, but a message to all those out there wanting to reach for something that a lot of times, you have to put the work in yourself, and you need to think outside of the box. I'm thinking of the Wire specifically with that. But almost every song here is a gem and just feels like magic knowing what he was going through and how he got there. I had a feeling last week we would be seeing this album on this list but I didn't realize it would be this soon. Either way, along with Metallica, this makes for a very memorable week.
I like it.
An album I was already very familiar with. The overlong last track should knock it down from a 5 to a 4 but it doesn't because it also has Two Words on it.
Absolute masterpiece of hip hop and a certified classic
School spirit skip men resten av låtarna var 10/10 Lyssnade inte på outrot det var för långt
Brilliant, one of my favourites before, but even more so after listening in full again. Jesus Walks is an absolute classic, Spaceship is a rare 12/8 rap song, and All Falls Down is masterful pop music. Couldn't be less than 5 🌟!
Possibly the best hip hop album we've had on this 1001 albums list so far.
"...dropped out of school quick. I always had a Ph.D: a pretty huge dick" Have been a bit lazy with my five star ratings lately. So many big tracks and even bigger features for a debut album.
Especially after watching Jeen-Yuhs, this album is an all time classic that opened a Pandora's box onto rap music.
Classic hip hop album. I love Kanye deeply humorous yet still deeply complex lyrics about themes such as racism and love, while still maintaining his iconic braggadocius flow and character in the songs. The production is superb as well as unique. I great shift from gangsta rap as well, if we are referencing the times. My fav tracks were Slow jams, we don’t care and two words with an honourable mention to, it all falls down which is the most catchy :)
work of art
All of the songs are catchy and top-tier. The skits are pretty funny.
I don't know of a better Kanye album from front to back. Plenty of classics, and a hard working Kanye that hadn't yet made it as a rapper/front-man artist and wasn't totally weird yet.
Done!
I mean -- Do I even have to? Not my favorite of his first three, but so damn iconic.
Kanye I know a lot about and not much about his music. The only one I’ve ever got into is Dark Twisted Fantasy, which would be among my most played albums of the 2010s. I remember when this album came out and a lot of popular rap was pretty materialistic. Kanye (while I know was around for a while before this and had success as a producer) shows up with the rugby sweaters on is going to stand out. This is an album I’ve heard pretty well all of through osmosis. This one is really good, and really funny at times. Killer tracks Jesus Walks The New Workout Plan Slow Jamz
have to rate it a 5, especially after seeing the documentary
I was in my cousin’s car the first time I heard Ye’s Trough the wire and it really got my attention. I saw the MTV video that same night and I think I was already a Kanye fan without realizing it. I really liked that chipmunk choir and the rhymes and theme. After that it came the hit avalanche with Jesus Walks, Slow Jamz and of course All Falls Down. I didn’t get to listen to the whole album after maybe a year but it was all I was already expecting from it, I remember really loving it and listening to it endlessly, I mean, Kanye was so much more interesting than all that gansta rap that was around, his rhymes were fun and inventive and damn was the record soulful… 18 years later I hear people say it sounds dated (kinda agree), that most of the skits sound cheesy and lame (agree) and that Kanye got much better with the subsequent albums (did he?). Staying on this topic, and regarding the heights his career and talent achieved I the following years I want to close this one with a note about “Family Business”, yes it’s not his most famous track, yes his views on the topic have darkened (Real Friends), yes he has greater tracks, but damn, the incredibly soulful production of the track, the shiny and clear treatment of the topic reveal a much clearer and healthier state of mind than ever after that, it is sad how much has his soul soured, what would have happened if health stayed the same? Would his art and legend achieved the level they got? Would he have faded into oblivion? I woke up early this mornin' with a new state of mind A creative way to rhyme without usin' knives and guns Keep your nose out the sky, keep your heart to God And keep your face to the risin' sun I know we are in the days of burying Skete, but I’m sure he would benefit from a moment like this nowadays…
Classic 10!
5/5. Best Kanye (so far) IMO
The guy is a genius, no matter what his ego had turned him into the last 10 years in the public eye. The most important musical and cultural force since probably Nirvana. His unique and innovative style of production and artistry through his lyricism and ability to carry a theme create a dynamic and engaging masterpiece of a hip hop album that opened the door to more from hip hop than gangster rap. In fact, he killed that genre and changed hip hop’s sound and fashion with every new album. Not enough can be said about the legacy of this album.
Amazing album all around.
Why am I a Kanye fan now? I’m not sure but this shit slaps.
Incredible album. Takes me back. The beginning of an incredible (if often turbulent) career. Great album
Musicas para ouvir com os amigos.
This is the Kanye I miss. He broke the mould for the mainstream hip hop of the time here. Expanded the palette lyrically, beatwise, and, I'd argue most importantly, emotionally. He had the audacity to simply be himself rather than hiding behind a cartoonish projection (except maybe on the album cover). Yes, there's tons of over the top boasting to be found here for sure (par for the course), but he's just as likely to be introspective, even self critical, or, heaven forbid, vulnerable. I love that he is so transparent and open in telling his story through music. It sounds funny, but for somebody who has gone on to practically become the dictionary definition of an artist who is out of touch with reality, he started his career being eminently relatable. This album is absolutely bursting with ideas and emotions. All over the place in a contagiously exciting way.
This album was SO GOOD. Amazing lyrics, amazing beat, amazing message. My favourite so far.
PERFECT
Makes me miss when Kanye was good.
klassisk plata, geðveik lög og fyndin djok, 5 stars from me
Damn, Kanye came out of the gate swinging! His early stuff is so good. This album is such a strong indictment of racism and consumer culture as well as being a FIRE rap album with smooth verses and well produced beats throughout. I like some newer Kanye, but this takes the cake. And 21 tracks?! He was on fire.
I still say Kanye is a pretentious prick but there was less of his "my lyrics prove I'm smarter than you" attitude with this debut effort. I laughed hard at his first two interludes and the school spirit skits (made me wonder if I wasted time with all my schooling) - really well done. Kudos to his wit and smarts on this album. Jesus Walks is brilliant; fiery and beats that make you snap to attention (slipped in a Billy Madison line too). Spills over to Never Let You Down (great lyrics and good beats) and Get Em High (great beats and good lyrics). The New Workout Plan and Breathe In Breathe Out were fun & funny. Nothing on this album that I disliked (except Last Call...not really counting it), not much that I didn't really enjoy. Damn good album.
Yeezy!
Decided to be as objective as possible listening as I loved at the time but through it aged badly. However as soon as the first beat hit it was just joyous. Skits are a little cringy but no where near as bad as 90's hiphop. Kanye even had good lyrics here.
Kanye makes his own debut on the scene in a bombastic way. This album is packed with fun features, excellent production, and singles that really demonstrate the next mover and shaker in hip hop.
Izvrstan album, moj bivši me upoznao s njim
Good album
Not my favorite by ye but amazing nonetheless.
Ni vet ni vet de e int ens nån fråga om saken
Some people hate on Kanye and have never listened to this. Sad!
Guys... jag älskar Kanye.
Okhuenno
man i dislike modern-day kanye but it's hard not to love this record
For the kids
Favourite album of all time
Some of Kanye's best work
So much texture, enthusiasm, and charisma. Moves so fast, freewheeling and joyously so. Made me smile so much.
The original Kanye banger. Lives up to his name.
Peak Ye
Probably my favorite hip-hop LP ever…perfect!
One of his best albums
I remember when this came out. Before Kanye went mad. I loved this album and it got heavy play time for probably a year or more.
can barely listen to this anymore with how unwell he is anymore but you know, it's still incredible
From this debut one would think Kanye arrived on the scene fully formed. The samples are great, the beats are innovative as hell, and his production is absolute perfection. His fearlessness to incorporate so many disparate elements into hip hop truly set him apart from his contemporaries. He’s truly a cut above
Greatest
Genius like me
Wonderful production on Kanye's first album. I had already listened to this prior and enjoyed every bit of it. Such an influential album with wonderful tracks. 10/10
classic, 9/10
A bit long with the skits but there are just so many classics on this album. 10/10
very strong album from Kanye
It’s a great album. Kanye bursting into the scene with The College Dropout. Although the best of Kanye was still to come on later projects.
classic yeezy, but not the yeezy I first heard how the hell does he have a 12 minute outro?!
Such a great 2000s album with a bunch of great songs on it. 9/10.
literally every song slaps top to bottom idk such a range of emotions and experiences sheesh
Amazing.
I like the skit sections a lot, it's very seamless
Got a lot out of this relisten
Loving this a LOT more than my first listen. It may just be top 3 Kanye for me, some of these tracks are total masterpieces.
Yh
ye
Si es bueno el señor west, incluso antes de su megalomanía que ya por ahí se asoma. “Jesus walks: clásico instantáneo.
heard a bunch of these songs separately before but never the whole album, but i rly like the songs i hadn't heard before
Good album much better listened to as a whole rather than single tracks
What. An. Album. Literally one of the best things I’ve ever heard.
good af
too many skits and too long in general, other than that, one of the best 00's hip hop album.
Me gustó mucho. Mood: Kanye loves beats... and Kanye.
