Reviews (page 12 of 13)
I love the Temps—and I especially love their stuff from '67-'72, but they're not an album band. There's always a great jam or three on any given album, but then there are needless covers and one or two frankly embarrassing numbers. I would normally give this a 3 but that cover of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was kind of atrocious. So, this is not my fave of their albums. But man, oh man, a collection of their best songs from that period would truly be an album one must hear before one died.
Honestly, sorry to your girl, but laregely forgettable
Ну такое, какая попсня блять. Но это лучше tarkus в разы
not a fan really, but pretty close to my taste
Psychedelic soul from Motown vocal harmony group. All Directions is correct - influences from smooth NYC jazz, through to funky, jarring sounds. Good songs but production not great on some side 2 tracks, flat vocal on The First Time Ever cover is off-putting.
thought i'd give it 3 stars but couldn't stop skipping. not my vibe at all i guess
2,5/5
I really enjoyed the first song, but it made me realize why I don't care for most of these albums. I need a substantial bit of emotion put into the lyrics for me to connect too, amazing instrumentation alone is not enough. The rest of the songs were boring.
I like their radio hits. An entire album of them is too much for me. Some pitch problems vocally, balance problems within the singing, not very good production, and TWELVE minutes of “Papa….” Made this a listen that wasn’t really all that enjoyable. I’ll stick to just hearing the hits on the radio.
Standouts Papa Was a Rolling Stone
Disappointed with this one - I saw the Temptations and Funk and got very excited. Only to come crashing back down to earth after about two songs. Pretty boring - ended up skipping most songs. What a shame. 2/5
Soulful not too bad but didn't grab my attention either. 2.5
All Directions has many varied songs and moods, but the one that gets it on the 1001 Must Hear List is Run Charlie Run (which is also the best song on the album.) Bass vocals are great and really help bring the point home. Got a few covers in there that drop the overall rating to (2.3*s)
A couple standout songs
This album was a cool vibe but only the first few songs were memorable. I’m not much of a funk guy but it’s undeniable how talented these people are, I just had a hard time really getting into it.
I thought I'd like this more but no, it's a 2 star. Surprised.
Funky/souligt, inget är dåligt men inget tar tag i en
Jeg er ikke fristet
Not bad, pretty chilled out motown type music. It's nice but I don't think I would seek it out, it's just not my kind of thing. I can appreciate their talent though, they are crazy good at what they do.
This was a rough listen, not what I expected
Although I did recognize two classics and I know this album was hugely influential, it’s just not my thing.
One extra star for being a bit funky. They walked so we could run or whatever.
Almost groovy
Didn't like it that much some songs were good, not rlly my tempo or genre
Some solid songs.
Glad this got me to listen to some deeper cuts beyond the greatest hits I've mostly heard.
Nothing special.
It was ok
Has good moments - vocals, lyrics, instrumentals. Papa Was a Rolling Stone stands out. Clearly an album that has been sampled heavily, many of the riffs were familiar. But overall it doesn’t grab me.
hay un cover de Glee de un tema de este álbum (Brittana ❤️)
Mid
Some racist title. A lot without Text. Nothing for me.
I was pretty disappointed with this, honestly. I'm surprised because I typically enjoy older R&B. But the first song is mixed so badly it's basically unlistenable (only in the right ear and the vocals are too low in the mix). Run Charlie run has good intent but it's super repetitive. Papa was a rolling stone was long and didn't land the hook as well as I expected. The second half of the album was pretty forgettable. Some good vocals of course, but hopefully the Temptations have a more interesting album on this list. 2/5.
Not really my style of music. Also a very short album and not very memorable.
It was okay
Really not sure. not my thing. highly random at times. Did make me laugh with the lyrics on one track so gave them an extra star. First album where I have struggled to form an opinion.
2.5 - not super memorable
Heard some Temptations songs before. While I can tell it's a good, well made album it just was background music to me for some reason. I just couldn't pay attention to any of the tracks 2/5
Forgettable enough.
Not the most memorable, don't think I'll go for it again. I didn't hate it.
Ok
Close to a 3
Fav: Love Woke Me Up This Morning Least Fav: Run Charlie Run
Fairly disappointing. Way too much funk. Maybe a victim of their own previous success
I really expected to like this one more, but it just didn't grab me. Seems like a lot of 70s era Motown struggled to find the groove they had in the 60s.
Pleasant funk but nothing special
Got bored honestly. Second song takes you back to a different place and time I don’t want to go back to. Or maybe nothing has changed at all.
Again not really my favorite
Honestly… not great. Temptations have a lot of hits and this had one of them, and it’s my least favorite (Papa was a rolling stone). So I mean… pretty low score from me. Just thought it was boring. It sounded like if you had an album with 2 good songs and you skip a bunch of the other songs to get to the good songs… this album was entirely made up of the other songs 1.75/5 ⭐️ So I’ll round up and give it 2 stars.
My first thought was "this isn't the Temptations album I'd have chosen." My second thought was how much the funky stuff sounds like Little Feat. You can hear the influence the Temptations had on American boogie rock. Ultimately only a couple songs really stood out and it was a bit of a snoozer for me.
I thought this album fell a little flat. Papa was a rollin stone is a classic. I love "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", but I prefer the Roberta Flack version. I'm sure this was a great album at the time for the Tempatations to break out of their Motown pop era, just doens't seem to hold up over time.
pretty long songs
Good harmonies but didn’t move me like other stuff by them
Was is a funky album, yes. Was it missing something? Yes, but I can't put a finger on it. I just wasn't vibing with this album like I do with other funky albums. 2/5
Funky Motown.
Liked the song about the dog where they all shwadity bob (I ain't got nothing). Album deffo fades as it goes on. High 2.
Not too interesting or engaging. The Temptations hardly tempt me for a re-listen. Best: Papa Was a Rollin' Stone Worst: Run Charlie Run
A chill listening experience. Had an 11 minute version of Papa Was a Rolling Stone. Not sure if there was a shortened version for radio at the time. Run, Charlie, Run was a wild song 😬😅. Overall, not bad.
While I appreciate the social conscious aspects of this album, I tend to like the more upbeat Temptations song. Not my favorite.
I was previously familiar with Papa Was A Rollin' Stone only, which is definitely the strongest track on the album. However, it does seem to go on a little long. The album overall is ok-to-good. I did not mind listening to it, but wouldn't seek out the full album again.
Not a fan of 70s Motown at all, just a bit repetitive! Killer no filler score: 2.5/5
The Good: The Temptations! The Bad: It takes them too long to explain that their father was a rolling stone.. The Ugly: Expected soul, got funk I did not like. Imagine that the Foo Fighters release a new album which are all about covers of ‘70s evergreen songs… that’s how I felt with this album. Yes, Papa Was A Rolling Stone is a classic, but the damn thing just takes too long to start rolling, and once it does, it seems the hill it is rolling off is never ending and not that steep… 2* because I did NOT enjoy listening to this album.
not my thing
# 350 : sigh, was hoping for some classic that I knew and could sing along to. Alas I got the Temptations. This was funky at first, but got a bit monotonous. At least it was short and sweet lol.
Honestly I didn't care for it at all.
not for me, wanted to switch to something else, and did NNN
Papa was a rolling stone is the one on this album, the rest is meh
Letkeä. Aikainen ilmestymisvuosi discohkolle funkille, joten lienee tienraivaajia?
Sekalainen soppa. 2+
I do really like Love Woke Me Up This Morning
Some great grooves here, but pretty scattered and lacking in melody for my taste. Not necessarily what I’d be looking for out of this band, either. Best song: Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On
I'm a bit surprised that I'm even going to say this, but I find this album to be incredibly...boring. I'm a sucker for that classic Motown sound, and by definition, All Directions is chalk full on it, plus genuinely tight studio musicianship, vocal harmonies, and pop sensibilities. So why don't I love this? For one, I'm really not a fan of psychedelic soul. I just don't think the aesthetics blend. While All Directions isn't the thickest psychedelic soul album ever, that texture really ruins a lot of the potential here. Whether it's the cluttered production of "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On," the guitar work on "Run Charlies Run," the spaced-out harmonies of "I Ain't Got Nothin'," or, most of all, the extended instrumental build of "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" – it all just feels overblown with frills and extra trimmings that needed to be cut. But the rest of the record isn't much better. Sure, it's well made from a technique perspective, but a lot of it feels like leftovers from better Motown sessions. "The First Time I Saw Your Face" and "Do Your Thing'" feel like songs anyone signed to Motown could’ve made in '72. Even songs I like, like "Mother Nature," feel like a poor man's Marvin Gaye or Al Green. All Directions feels like a misnomer, because arguably, it only has one direction, one narrow lane of '70s psychedelic soul that was flashing in the Motown pan at the moment. What it's missing is the It Factor™️. I mean that both on face value when I'm talking about the standout songs – sure, "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" comes close to being worth the journey, but no one track is even remotely as good, and the aforementioned is a weak Temptations song anyway – but I'm also talking about the group, who by this era clearly lacked the star power of David Ruffin. To me, that absence is obvious, and prevents most of the material on All Directions from ever ascending higher. The fact that I'm also just generally not a fan of this brief era within a genre I'm heavily biased toward loving just adds insult to injury. Odd choice to include here.
Okay
Papa is awesome. The rest is meh.
Sounds all right but it isn't my thing. 2/5
The wondrousness of PWARS notwithstanding, this is odd assortment of tubes - most ok, one or two quite good, but resolutely refusing to play nice with each other.
Despite enjoying the lyrics and content at times, much prefer the David Ruffin Temprations.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
Can't fault the musicianship. Can fault the song selections. The slower ones are interminable. Maybe 2 good tracks in here, 3 OK ones and the rest I could definitely live with ever hearing again.
Listenable. Not the best album, but not the worst.
The funky stuff is better than the soul/rnb stuff , especially the first 3 tracks. Short album, flew by. Not bad.
Outside of “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” I found this far too slow. The covers are lethargic. All the other songs feel they’re at half speed. Great vocals though. 2/5
Expected more from this so prob being a lil harsh on the rating. It was a fine listen but nothing really stood out to me.
Found this very boring. Also there is no need for Papa Was a Rollin' Stone to be so long
it was fine, not really my thing
Some pretty good tunes along with a couple at the end that weren't so good.
I feel like a horrible person but The Temptations don’t tempt me :( Only liked ‘I ain’t got nothing,’ ‘Mother Nature,’ and ‘Do Your Thing’ cause I’ve heard then before
Ok
An easy listening album
A base hit. Not exciting but keeps the game going.
Slow
funky. so far not really digging it. Didn't hate it, but I don't think I'd put it on again.
not high or pretentious enough to enjoy this
Soulful album, but apart from a great musicality in the instruments, it did not speak to me.
2.5 stars
Nah man, this was not good.
This album is plagued by inconsistency in quality. This is too bad because some of the songs are very enjoyable. This would have made a great EP if they had just cut the weaker tracks, like "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face."
All Directions really misses for me, for an act that produced quite a lot of quality, it's lacking from this album. Almost a third of it is devoted to a really awkward cover of Papa Was a Rollin' Stone that doesn't work for me, and that's even before you get to the history behind its inclusion on the record. The other cover on there is delicate and stylish but also not better than the original or other takes. Only Mother Nature near the end really piqued my attention in a good way; a disappointing 2.
This was just kind of boring to me.
Well it started well with great funk beats and guitars.... then we got the pretention papa was a rolling stone. Clearly doesn't need a 12 min runtime. And then s*it hits the fan... do woop balads ? hell nah. 2 stars
#189. The songs that were more funk were good. The songs that were not really funk were not really good. 2/5: meh
- die elf-minütige Wah-Wah-Action in Papawas a rolling stone hatte irgendwann wirklich fast was komödiantisches. 2,25/5
- War sehr entspannt, aber so richtig abgeholt hat es mich jetzt auch nicht 2/5
Conflicted about this Temptations album, which is full of nice sounds and good funky grooves but kind of misses the mark for me. It feels super all over the place, unfocused. Maybe it’s the nature of the group to feel like kind of a grab bag. There are live tracks, there are pretty uninspired covers, there are good funky long instrumentals that don’t seem to go anywhere. I get the sense they’re grabbing for anything that might work, and a lot of it just isn’t landing for me. Interesting reading the backstory about “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone,” how they actually all respected their fathers and disagreed with the message, no doubt pressured by Berry Gordy or one of those guys. I think their heart’s in the right place, but too many compromises that really hurt the cohesiveness of it as a record. 2/5
Still not the genre for me. 2.5.
it wasnt long but it felt long
meh
Motown sound at its height. Think of Motown music , one band that comes to mind, is the Temptations.
Not very memorable. Some good songs, some not so good.
It didn't grab me that much
A third of the album is expended on the great but somewhat bloated 12 minute Papa Was a Rolling Stone. The other 22 minutes is spent on a mix of political/social commentary and standard Temptations fare, but nothing that notable. Love Woke Me Up This Morning is a decent cover, but I can’t see someone preferring it to the Gaye/Terrell original. Most of the songs just fall flat.
Nada de demais! Banda de baile
It's fine I guess but it's so nothing I'm giving it 2
Liked Song Papa Was A Rollin' Stone
Lo escuché entrenando en el gimnasio. Me aburrió. Tiene uno o dos temas buenos, después aburrido. Un álbum que pasa desapercibido?
It's hard to rate such a talented group of people this low, but in short, I don't really like this. In theory, I like psychadelic soul; in practice every song is either a vamp to nowhere or head in the clouds falsetto caterwauling. "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" would be a much better song at half the length with twice the singing. No way can this be The Temptations' best work; hoping we get to revisit them.
1. хз 2. интересный припев, энергия и разгоночный ритм во втором квадрате. 3. Понравился постепенный разгон и атмосфера, но ооо долгий 4. ... Вощем, не нрав мне соул
Disappointed. On paper, this is an amazing album, but while Papa Was a Rolling Stone is an awesome tune and well situated within this lineup, the rest of this doesn't hold up. This was made after Motown moved to LA and to me it's an example of what people mean when say that they lost something in the move.
The Temptations gave us hits like "My Girl" and "Just My Imagination". Those sho nuff ain't funky songs, so this album was kind of surprising. The Temptations are an all male vocal group. I don't feel like these songs are carrying the rich harmonies and vocals that they are famous for.
Papa was a rolling stone!
Wasn't entirely my thing but also not dreadful either
funk? naja
Nothing really interesting here.
Funk, groove, gospel, fade outs, not impressive, rolling stone psychodelicly long, boring
Not their best album.
Best song - Papa was a Rolling Stone
Not my style but it was okay
All for a good funky groove, but the vocals are not for me. Made it about halfway through the album before turning it off.
Would be fun live. Suffers from dated recording quality. Fun bass lines.
Meh. At least it wasn’t long. I ain’t got nothin’ was kinda a fun song.
Starkt 2:a
This album started strong, and then went in All Directions. It felt like it was endlessly teasing something, but never delivered.
I don't know what to think about this, 'cause it's know the tipe of music i like, even tho i bounced my head a few times.
2 Papa was a Rolling Stone: Great Do your own Thing: OK Rest boring
Good stuff. Motown isn’t my fav but appreciate the talent….and the sign of the times in songs like Run Charlie Run.
Average soul music meh
I´m much more into the "classic" Temptations than the "psychedelic". Good Album, "Papa was a rolling stone" stands far out.
5/10 Highlights: Papa was a Rolling Stone
Motown tem seus problemas mas ô galera que sabia produzir coisa legal nos anos 60-70.. Gostei mais da primeira metade do álbum. Fave: funky music sho nuff turns me on

Keywords: FWUNK, Insane Lyrics Notable Song: Papa Was A Rollin' Stone
70s soul and funk showcased by one of the leading Motown artists of the time. Good if unspectacular.
1972 Motown. Over a third of this LP is ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’. Described as ‘psychedelic soul’ as they move away from their 60s harmonies & ballads to something funkier. This is the most famous version of the main track but it’s a cover. Track goes on way too long, it’s like a never ending break down with no climax, it just peters out but I’m sure it worked great live as there is tension there. Sadly underwhelmed by this, I was hoping for more. Is this R&B ? If so as expected not for me on this showing, my loss, maybe I have no soul. Too smooth. Just not enough going on for me here, it never builds to anything.
Music was fine, absolutely nothing wrong with it. But it was just not for me. Its something i could enjoy listening to if somebody else had put it on but i do not see myself listening to it again otherwise.
Was not my style.
ok
fine!
I (do not) like the sound of funky music
Funky vibes - not really my cup of tea but good to get my groove on for something different (track 2 - yikes) Most tempting track: Mother nature
I've never purposely listened to The Tempations, Run Charlie Run was a bit unexpected. This is fine but it doesn't really grab my attention. When it's good it's very good but overall it feels a bit forgettable to me.
OK funk album.
Not really my thing. There's some good stuff here though. Just not my cup of tea.
Too corny.
Too slow. A couple of classics on here but overall not a solid listen
A nice change of direction for the 1,001 list, which brought a smile to my face. Sadly, the rest of the album didn’t hit the heights of ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’, but I still really enjoyed the album as a whole. Would probably give a ‘Best of’ album a listen, as it’s only the big hits that would make me decide to play this lot again by choice. A high end 2 stars from me (miles better than EJ🤣)
Nothing rlly stuck out
Only a few songs at the end stood out. Not terrible but not memorable.
It's a fine for what it is. It starts off with a few tracks of fluffy party good-time music. There's some surprisingly darker commentary on race relations and whatnot, but musically it's completely inoffensive and it's just the dance music of its time. This is the Motown era that came just before disco, but it's not far off. Not my thing, but it's well written, performed, and produced. The Temptations are a big deal for a reason. I just don't care for this style. Papa Was A Rollin Stone is pretty much the only track I enjoyed, and that might just be because of how it's been used since. It's a movie soundtrack staple, but it does have an irresistible vibe to it. The back half of the album are mostly ballads, and they're....not great, in my opinion. The First Time Ever I saw Your Face is a cover of a cover of a cover. A song written in the 50's revitalized by Roberta Flack in the 60's and kinda fumbled by the guys here in the 70's. Meh.
There were a few songs from this album that everyone probably knows, but I just couldn't get into it. I appreciate the musicianship in the songs, but I did not resonate for me.
not a. fan
Boring
nice singing and playing, a bit slow at times
It was OK until 'First time ever I saw your face'. Probably ruined by the Inbetweeners but also ruined for me.
Quick and boring.
This was kind of strange for The Temptations, but it didn’t really leave much of an impression at the same time.
i wanted to love this album, but just couldn't
Die Platte, wo Papa Was A Rolling Stone drauf ist… Ansonsten meh. 💁🏻
Til den kedelige side
Fine
Of all the classic Motown bands I find The Temptations to be the hardest work. Maybe it's because they're not as distinctive as the others, and have interchangeable members? This is fine but not nearly as interesting as Cloud Nine or e.g. Sly and the Family Stone, and quite slow and unexciting with it
Funky grooves. Vocals weren't my style.
I really enjoy The Temptations but with the exception of "Papa Was A Rollin Stone" the album didn't do much for me at all. Its just fine
Okay
ощущение, что альбом разгоняется к концу, но реально выделить что-то сложно можно найти отдельные интересные моменты, но не более к концу разве что музыка начинает более целостно звучать
meio meh
Standard
Nothing about this album really spoke to me - the best songs are all done better elsewhere.
A bit of a snoozer, no great songs but no bad songs. A little too short and nothing stands out.
It’s ok. Nothing wrong with it, it just doesn’t butter my muffin. I think there are other albums from this genre that do this better
It's never a good sign when you have to force yourself to pay attention. Deeply average with a smattering of intrigue. Lovely funk on some geetars, the occasional ear-catching lyric and a banger. But that was offset by an album that seemed to be stuck in second gear... the only temptation I was getting was to turn the fucker off.
Papa was a RS and the last song are really good, but too many slowpokes in the middle
fine background music.
Just ok...not my cup of tea. 2/5
It's not my thing.
Meh, meni vähän ohi koko levy, mutta ei kiinnostanut soittaa enää uudelleen.
2.5 I’m usually down with soul music but there was something disappointingly boring about this. Maybe it’s an attempt at being more tender, but other times it’s very political. I’m not sure what my mood is supposed to be by the end. Occasionally a song might have more of a groove than others and the talent is undeniable but I just can’t imagine when I would listen to anything off this. Rating it higher because I really want to like it more than I do, sadly. Favorites: Run, Charlie, Run; Mother Nature, Do Your Thing was okay.
Huske kje
Groovy, “light” music, but would like it to be more upbeat, would rate 2.5 if I could
A very soulful album, with an adventurous cover of “Papa was a Rolling Stone”…maybe a little too adventurous at nearly 12 minutes! While this album wasn’t for me, I can see the appeal of this collection of songs, especially those who love a good Motown/ Barry Gordy vibe in their music. Maybe refrain from blasting out “Run Charlie Run” while driving around with the windows open. While possibly an empowering song or protest, the lyrics could be a little controversial for the modern era.
Really wanted to like it but just really didn’t
All Directions is the 15th or 16th album (depends on if you count the LP album preceding this one, without the founding members) from the American vocal group The Temptations. It is their most successful non-collaborative album, and this is a result of one of their most popular songs appearing on this album - "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone". This funky, psychedelic soul album was laid back, but left me wanting more. Not bad by any stretch, but not my music of choice.
Papa was a Rolling Stone it's just an incredible song. When it came out in 72 it was all over the radio. I heard it tonight at the grocery store. The instrumentation and vocals are just incredible. Rest of the album was just OK
Some funky groove lines.
N-word bad. It’s not terrible, but not my thing.
Decent disco tracks and messages throughout, just not really for me, enjoyed a few songs greatly though.
I guess I only really like The Temptations singles, their albums have been pretty underwhelming overall (this was my second album from them this week).
Wouldn't expect anything less funky from The Temptations, they really know how to do a funk. However their traditional funk in the latter half of the album turns into a deep soul that feels very sombre and reflective. It was interesting to learn that they didn't want to record a couple of the songs on the record - one being "Run Charlie Run" due to it's opening lines and the other, with what was undoubtedly their biggest hit of the record in "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" because the lead singer's father had recently passed away. Best: Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On Worst: Run Charlie Run
Didn’t really care for it.
Funky kinda racist
eh, not for me
Jazzy meh
This started pretty entertaining so I had high hopes. It quickly went south and stated to be some high pitch wailing.
Solid album of some music I havnt really listened to before.
Not for me
Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On, but Motown isn't all platinum and diamonds. This album illustrates that pretty clearly. Not sure if it's just me being fickle or this is really a subpar listen, but I wasn't entertained until I read the credits. It showed that Chef 'I'm gonna make love to you, woman" from Southpark (Isaac Hayes) has writing credits on this album. Freaky!
This album is like a guy who falls asleep at a red light. Obviously he was driving because he got to the stop light. The beginning of Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone is the moment after he passed out. Like the car is still idling, but nothing is happening. Four minutes later he jerks himself awake. “I wasn’t asleep!” Then he starts driving. Was he overly tired from a double shift? Was he drunk? I don’t know. All I know is that someone was asleep at the wheel here.
meinlaust
Never realized the Temptations released an "Explicit" song. This album sounds like an "end of career" album. It strays from what made the Temptations cool and tried to hard to incorporate what was commercially cool in the early 70s. Not their best work. Plus, the guy with the high voice has always annoyed me and he's featured a lot on this one.
Okay, I loved papa was a rollin stone. So funky. The rest was... meh.
Apart from a few songs I found this album underwhelming. Maybe I caught it on the wrong day.
Starts out strong. And ends silky-smooth. But, I ain't feelin' that mild ground. Favorite tracks: Funky Music Sho Nuff Turn Me On, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Do Your Thing ☆☆1/2
Ben nooit echt een soulman geweest. Best te pruimen, maar ook niet echt spectaculair
Beetje flauwe hap.
To be honest, I did not care for this. Does not deserve a 1 star, though.
Groovy start, didn’t finish.
An alright album with a few nice tracks on it. Not really my style however.
Not for me. Some good stuff but overall not great.
Some surprising tracks in there - e,g, Run Charlie Run.
not for me.
i think the first few songs were super fun but honestly it just got really boring. nothing was memorable!
Some great songs, however, it's just not my thing.
Some more language
Good group, none of these songs really stand out for me though
Apart from Papa was a rolling stone, I found this run of the mill - even First time ever I saw your face. Disappointing.
2/5 first listen. Couple good songs.
Short album, primarily covers... "Papa" was only enjoyable song but didn't need 12 minutes of it... Just meh for me.
A lot repetitive songs, good basslines on many though
If they panned it anymore the sound would circle around the earth and into the other ear. Can only think they wanted the sounds to come from 'All Directions'? Really distracting, couldn't deal with it.
This artwork didn't really catch on me. I struggled to keep my focus while listening.
Not bad, but im not very impressed either.
Meh. Not into it. I love the slow funk. But songs like Papa are to slow and feel a bit like Shatner's spoken word.
I was fine. But I didn't really like it
Turhan jumittelevaa jammailua minun makuuni. Papa was a rolling stone jäi tietysti mieleen, siinä oli tarttuva melodia ja biisi oli sen verran pitkä, että ei pystynyt menemään ohi. Ei jatkoon.
Not what I expected when I started to listen - more of the soft soul type music than the up tempo soul I had imagined. It was a decent listening album, but it was a little melancholy and Daddy Was a Rolling Stone was so long as to put me close to sleep.
Papa was a rolling stone was 11 minutes of fun. the rest of it came and went
Not very interesting. Not very motowny. Kind if boring.
My least favorite song was Run Charlie Run.
Did not expect that first song. Zoinks. Papa clocks in at 12mins...
Nothing I love more than an 11 minute song in the middle of an album.
torn between a 2 and 3 for this. wouldn't listen to it again, but didn't annoy me.
it the entire album was just papa was a rolling stone, it would get 4 stars... however, somewhere these are not the temptations i know, and somebody taught them the n word in song 2 that sounds out of place. really mediocre outside of one stellar song.
first 3 songs are bangers. the rest is filler
Got old pretty quick. Just 18 minute songs that all sound the same. Sad cos I was excited about this one
- this is ok - yeah this is alright
Tästä ei jäänyt oikein mitään käteen. Yksi tuttu, joskin erittäin keskinkertainen kappale ja loppulevy samaa tasapaksua r&b/funk/whatever diiibadaabaa. Peruskakkonen koska kuuntelu ei suuremmin myöskään häirinnyt.
A few of the songs were bops, but I'm not a fan of this easy-going stuff. It gets a two because I can see the significance of this record, and it was in no way unenjoyable or unmemorable
Very good background music, but I feel like I'm just a sucker for pop songs
Not very tempting 1.8
Not sure what to say. OK to listen to, but nothing really stood out.
Meh didn’t care for it
curti algumas faixas, mas achei meio cru e meio “gimmicky” nota: 3,5
It sounds nice but this era of me is not feeling this type of music at the moment.
This was such a chore to get through.
One okay song and a bunch of filler.
Groovy.
Nice short album ! Really groovy. Nothing spectacular, however. Fav song is ‘Run Charlie Run’.
1.1/5 Some nice vocals and instruments but nothing really grabbed me on this album
1. funky - 1 2. charly - 1 3. papa - 3 4. love - 1 5. nothing - 1 6. face - 1.5 7. mother - 1.5 8. thing - 1.5
Nope - I never understood why Papa Was a Rolling Stone was such a popular track Kind of like the rest of this album - I dont hear why its rated as one of the best of all time Confusing . . . .
'Papa' is great but the rest of this album is forgettable. Very poor opening two tracks.
It was just black america type of aesthetic. I didn't like it at all
Not for me. 1/5
Papa was a Rollin’ stone: 12 minutes très longues qui se répètent. Ça pourrait clairement être la musique d’un film pas fou où il se passe rien pendant DOUZE minutes.
boring
Not my type of music.
Album absolutely sucks. the third song made me sleep and the second and first songs were the only decent songs. Old person music.
As much as I love older music, this album did not resonate with me. The stereo mixing is not great on modern ears. Honestly I wish I'd have listened in mono
Not my vibe....

Not diggin' "All Directions" much. Lay some more funk down instead of the slow jams. Makes the list for the scared whitey and cheating father tracks I guess. I am not tempted to listen to any more of their albums...0.9 stars.
Not sure what it is about All Directions that lands it on this list. What I got was a pretty slow, boring album that did very little to keep me interested for anywhere near the 30 minute playtime. Even the best track, Papa Was A Rolling Stone has little to offer. It had a decent setup, and I kept expecting it to grow or break out at some point. Instead I got 11 minutes of a monotonous beat that could/should have been trimmed down. It feels like the 70's have much more to offer within this realm. The Temptations seem like they needed to lean more into the funk/groove and get away from the gospel/soul aspect to hook me in any way. Maybe this is one where you had to be there to understand why it's important but this would be one to remove/replace for me. 1.07 stars
I didn't enjoy it
Nope
I was expecting to really like this, but I didn’t all that much. I know the temptations have some good songs so I was disappointed. Maybe there will be a better representation of them on the list.
Херь какая то
Couldn't be arsed with this, especially not an 11 minute version of Papa Was A Rolling Stone
Not for me. I listened to it but that’s about all I can positively say.
Not my jam
I can't believe this was a number one album. It was so boring.
Słuchalem kilkanaście razy i nie udało się wkręcić. Nigas is komin run jedynie zapadło w pamięci, nudny.
It was missing the funk. Too much treble, not enough bass in the mix for a funk album. Felt like it went on forever.
The funk songs were fine but too long without going anywhere. I didn't enjoy the ballads at all
Just no
Not into this divisive music
I can't even remember listening to this.
No
Um produto de sua época, envelheceu q nem leite, horrivel
1/10, я не люблю джаз
Thankful for a short album. I only liked 2 tracks. Not interested in the rest.
nope
Dehär va inte så bra. 1 / 5
Gefällt mir nicht.
Nichts für mich. Zuviel Funk.
Meh. Didn’t really like any of the songs tbh not my thing
J'ai pas trop écouté, ça m'a vraiment pas emballé.
Man. I never really sought to listen to The Temptations outside of their popular hits, and listening to this made me real glad I never did. Obviously they’ve got their hits and they’re great. But this album just isn’t it for me. “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” was literally over 10 minutes long and the most interesting thing about it was the bass line, which was a 4 bar I fire loop in which the bass was resting 3/4 of the time. They say music isn’t about the notes you play, but the notes you don’t. And that’s true much of the time but come on, guys! The entire album was just way too slow and repetitive for me.
Langatmiger Soul.
Just so all over the place. I was perpetually bored and the songs were looooong. Even when they weren’t that long, they felt long.
Not great, didn't like a single song in this album
