Reviews (page 10 of 13)

I mean, a third of it is Papa Was a Rolling Stone, which is incredible. But the rest is more covers and nothing that grabbed me.

RB, very easy listen cool timeless music from the 70’s. 3.2

Good - slow to start and short but some nice funky choons.

really nice sounding, pretty forgettable. the 11 minute song was way too long

Proper feel good music. Papa was a rollin stone an obvious favourite on there - great example of how to build up a song. 3/5

Great musicianship, but completely unfocused.

What a very odd pick for the Temptations. I really don't understand it. Papa Was a Rolling Stone is tremendous though.

3.25 per track. First half really good stuff.

Funky, fun and much more interesting than what I thought this band was putting out around the time.

Not bad but just not might niche.

- do your thing is very good

Did each of these tracks come from a different album? I felt like I was listening to their library on shuffle.

Aardig 3/5

I liked this but I was not expecting to hear the n word so much lol

Pleasing album, but not exceptional. No surprise, the most popular song on Deezer is "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone", this was indeed my highlight too.

I cannot get ‘Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone’ out of my head. Worth the listen even if just for that song.

Papa was a rolling stone is a banger

Not bad. Is this really the best Temptations album? I've always thought of them as big hitmakers, but aside from "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," there's nothing else on here I recognized. Solid soul/funk music, but I wish there was more distinction. I guess I'm just more of a fan of the P-Funk style and stuff that came later than this. Favorite tracks: Run Charlie Run, Papa Was a Rollin' Stone. Album art: A vignette style picture of the guys in/on a tree. Good color border and framing, but this one seems like decor at a bed and breakfast run by the oldest living woman in America. 3/5

Not bad

What I did hear, I liked. I give this 3.5 stars.

A great album! The Temptations will never go out of style.

Starts out strong then tails off in my opinion.

Papa was a rollin’ stone is all you need. The rest is gravy

Some Songs were very good, others not so much.

Prima albumpje met legendarisch nummer “papa was a rolling stone”

Lekker groovy en kort, daar scoor je natuurlijk punten mee

It was a pleasant listen with some funky moments, Papa Was A Rollin' Stone is the obvious standout track.

It was very solid. Not quite my style but the song papa was a rolling stone is a classic.

I agree with many others, the funk songs were clearly superior. Because of the non-funk songs, I have to say this is probably a 3 on the whole.

A good album but not my style and no songs really stood out to me.

It was alright. Relatively short. Could have been shorter. Didn't really that many hits. It is not really a 3 but I will round up.

I like several of these songs. I know their style is very influential, but I was only familiar with several songs on this album.

Tiene cosas lindas, otras excelentes y otras que son medias sosas, junto con uno de los cantantes que tiene un color de voz muy chillón. Las dos últimas canciones son geniales.

I liked the earlier songs in this album, but I really dislike falsetto ballads, which appeared in the second half.

Can appreciate the soulfulness of this album and the amazing vocals, but it may just be a bit too deep for my tastes, especially during the 13 minute version of Papa was a Rolling Stone, which tends to drag on. Great album, just not one I think I would go back to.

Only heard one or two songs by these guys so it was cool to hear a whole album. Nice funky vibe!

p279. 1972. 3 stars. Classy early 70s Motown, let down by filler and redundant covers. When it's good, it's very good indeed.

"Papa Was a Rolling Stone" is amazing, and there are some other good songs. "Run Charlie Run" is pretty hard to listen to. Torn on whether this is a 3 or a 4 by virtue of "Rolling Stone"

Idk didn't really feel like an album, but some cool songs when it's not an instrumental

A good album but not really tempted (ha) to listen to it again

Over the last decade I’ve been listening a lot of old funk, R&B, soul and Motown. For some reason I don’t get into 70s Temptations and I can’t put my finger on why that is. So I’m not surprised I only liked about about half of these tunes here.

the funky songs are great, the ballads or whatever not so much. 3.2

For someone who had an 11 minute song made about him, Papa sounds like kind of an a-hole. I enjoyed this album, but it didn’t grab me in the same way as Solomon Burke’s style of soul. It feels more composed but a bit lacking in personality. Still some beautiful tunes though!

Fun, quick listen. Felt a little called out by "I Ain't Got Nothin'" "Mother Nature" is a stand out track for me, along with the iconic instrumentals in "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone"

Thought this was just ok. I wish I liked it more. "I Ain't Got Nothin'" was good though. 2.75/5

I feel like this is an album that exists to shelter the hits, primarily “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”, an objective masterpiece, but most else is standard Motown stuff, which I love but don’t find this particularly special. C…+?

Interesting sonically, but gets progressively more boring as it goes on and adds some very annoying pieces( doo ooping and the Timpani?)

Not a genre I would ever have chosen to listen to but was alright.

Solid album. Anchored by Papa Was a Rolling Stone. It is strange to hear "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and the voice is so close to Roberta Flack. Also, "Do Your Thing" not the Isaac Hayes version.

We're all just here for Papa was a Rolling Stone

not bad. i would never pick this out on my own but it was okay. its like rollerskating soundtrack disco vibes. my fav song was the first time i saw your face. 3/5

Surprisingly didn’t know any song except Papa Was a Rolling Stone and that was too long and boring. Run Charlie Run lyrics took me by surprise. I think I Ain’t Got Nothing is a pretty good tune.

•Not owned: Streaming •Kind of all over the place. Great cuts—"Mother Nature", "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone"— that have to carry the weight of a poorly recorded live opener and the goofy lyrics of "I Ain't Got Nothin'". I wanted so much more from this. •3/5

Motown inspired, not really my style though

Classic

it was ok. A little more funky than I expected.

The funky songs are good, and have some great guitar playing/tone. The ballads are ok, never been a huge fan of ballads in general.

Nice grove

This album starts very very strong but fizzles out with a bunch of slow songs at the end, the first bunch of songs are great, funky and a great listen and the back half is... not. Since the first couple of songs are so strong and the slow songs aren't so bad I can give it a strong 3 but I'd hesitate to go any higher than a 3.5 Favorite song: Papa was a Rolling Stone (obviously)

Within All Directions, The Temptations skilfully navigate Whitfield's diverse musical landscape. They balance expansive sounds with their hallmark balladry, exemplifying a first-class act that turns every tune into a work of art. Papa Was a Rolling Stone, is a staggering achievement, harmonising soul psychedelia, sensational vocal harmonies, great vocal power, with soulful harmonies further cementing The Temptations' legacy in the realm of musical brilliance. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 3 STAND OUT TRACK - Papa Was A Rolling Stone

couple good songs nice funk vibe to it idk what the n word songs are all about but I liked it. Nice slow vibes 3.5/5

Good, but they are kinda all over the place.

This album seems like it should be right up my street, but the tracks don't quite click with me as much as I was hoping. I really like the vibe of Papa Was A Rolling Stone, but don't find it as compelling as it should be. 3/5

Solid album

Good instrumentation, singing was variable. Some songs felt a little repetitive.

Love the Temps but this album did not represent all their great material. could have picked a better one.

I liked Cloud Nine a lot more, but there's some charm in this album. 3/5!

Rolling stone is the best song. Others are alright but none hooked me

A funky first half punctuated by the 12 minute "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" gives way to a traditional R&B Motown record. Truly a record of two halves as the first half builds to a psychedelic funk that you can get lost swirling around in, building on the work they started on the 1969 album Cloud Nine. The second half is all soaring strings and gentle vocals and can feel like a little bit of a whiplash but still pretty all the same.

Jammigt. Intressant. Ojämn ljudbild i lurar. Live. Nice för bakgrund.

Papa was a rolling stone is the highlight of this album

Samma som de senaste albumen. Skönt sound. Men det lyfter inte riktigt. Papa är bäst

Hög kvalitet både instrumentellt och sångmässigt. Papa was a rolling stone är ju sjukt bra, men ingen annan låt är riktigt nära den nivån. Bra och stabilt rakt igenom dock. Stark trea.

I always liked the temptations, and that is my era as well. (1972) However, I would rate this album, my first one, as fair. I did love the first song. (Papa was a Rolling Stone.)

A nice enough album. Has the feel of a label product.

This album is on the list off of the strength of one song. A legendary, genre-defining song. But one song does not an album make, as awesome as that song may be. The other material on this album just isn’t that great. “Run Charlie Run” is cringy as hell to listen to. The three slow ballads that follow Papa are pleasant, in an easy-listening sort of way, yet boring, especially following the high of track 3. The last two songs on the record are better and end on a higher note. Overall, the material doesn’t feel cohesive to me. Seems like most others in this group liked this album a lot more than I did!

soulful and jazzy with a few funky numbers. felt like a beat cop in the seventies driving around listening to this. favourite song was mother nature

Good jazz album

Soul from 1970s. Pretty vibey. 3/5.

It is absolutely wild to me that “Papa” was a number 1 single at almost 12 minutes long. I enjoyed the funk way more than the slower R&B and ballads. Though I do like that the two sides of the album are very different with side A being all funk and side B R&B. Side B was pretty boring except for the last track “Do Your Thing” which brought back the funk elements.

Papa was a rolling stone is pretty long. I like the sweet ones.

Good album. Lots of classics

Some weak tracks (Run Charlie Run) and some rippers (Papa was a rolling stone). Loved the guitar work with that wah pedal, the horn section adds some real sizzle and production is great.

I love the Temptations, but this is nothing special. Papa Was a Rolling Stone is a classic, but the rest of this album is a "What's Going On" also-ran. Not bad to listen to in the background, and the band is incredible, but the songs are phoned in and its all easy to ignore.

First exposure to motown in this. 3* overall. Enjoyable intro but not a favorite I'm going to pop in randomly. Enjoyed: Papa was a rollin stone (scratchy swangy guitar), the singing in Mother Nature

Decent record. One incredible classic and some other good songs.

Notable Songs: Papa Was A Rollin' Stone, I Aint got nothin

Live track 1? Nice & groovy. Fidelity lacks a little bit of bite on some tracks.

This was alright. Didn't expect the "explicit language" but was overall pretty good. Couldn't help but think it could have been slightly better in some way. A solid 3/5

This started off really well but unfortunately it lost me towards the end of the album. First side is definitely worth a listen though.

Está bien. El highlight es obviamente la de Papa, pero el resto son entretenidas. ¿Lo volvería o oír? No creo, pero ha estado bien el ratico.

Listened Before? No Up until this point, I've had no problem resisting The Temptations, which seems wrong. Opens with what sounds like a live-mixed track, or a track intended to sound like it was captured in a live setting. In any event, its got a nice groovy feel about it. Gotta say, I'm enjoying the interplay between the plucky guitar and repeating bass-line. Papa Was A Rollin' Stone was a funky centerpoint for the album. Kind of reminds me of the Shaft theme song in its scratchy guitar, etc. Honestly for a centerpoint it was kind of boring, but the production is really solid. Nice vocal harmonization with meaty bass and soulful guitar licks throughout. I've heard I Ain't Got Nothin' referenced in a number of other hip-hop songs. Soulful song with pretty vocal harmonization and use of strings. In general this album is fine, but doesn't compel a second listen. I can respect the talent here -- particularly for vocal harmonization -- but I was not specifically moved. This is a soft 3 / 5 for me. Added to Library? No

Threw me off very much with Run Charlie Run lol. Was expecting My Girl type of tracks. I liked a couple songs like the Funky Music and Papa Was a Rollin' Stone.

Good voice. Liked the drums. Nice for a chilled out day. That's about it. Decent funk, Okay soul. I probably won't think about this album again.

Definitely not the Temptations I expected to hear that sang My Girl. Turns out this is later with some different members and definitely seem to be going for a Sly and the Family Stone psychedelic sound. Some of it works some of it doesn’t. I know I’ve heard I Ain’t Got Nothin before somewhere and Papa Was a Rolling Stone was solid.

Achei legalzinho, ouvi ontem e hoje, mas não achei wow, novamente talvez por estar em outra vibe de musica

Kinda moody. Like Do Your Thing a lot.

Funky, politically meaningful, solid.

Hyvä meininki ekalla puoliskolla, mutta hieman lässähtää jälkimmäisellä. Varma kolme silti.

Only got the chance to give it a single listen, but it was pretty damn funky. Definitely one for me to revisit in the future, had heard the group name before but expecting something more soulful. Not disappointed with some funk instead though.

Ég hefði viljað vera uppi á þessum tíma. Þetta er nefnilega fín tónlist en samt ekkert mikið meira en það. Mig langar bara að upplifa tíðarandann þegar ég hlusta á þetta.

this opens up with alot of energy and feels fresh, starts to feel a bit dated as the second side creeps forward. The closer, Do your thing is enjoyable

It was fine. A little boring and sappy at times.

Chill vibes.

Good stuff. But there are far better MoTown recordings

A bit slower, softer than I was anticipating, but good.

Pretty chill

Cool beanz

not sure how i feel about this album. the funky tracks were amazing but the slow, soft piano ballads didn't really hit home for me. i did have a minor heart attack when i saw that papa was a rollin' stone was nearly 12 minutes long and a third of the total album length, but man did they do it justice. that song slaps and i was wrong for prejudging it so. i don't really remember most of the later tracks but I'm sure they were pleasant enough. there's really nothing *bad* here. favorites: papa was a rollin' stone, love woke me up this morning

2/8, 25%

Great step forward of maturity and musicianship from the members. Important socially and musically.

you gotta do your thing

I love the general sound and vibe these songs have, very smooth, funky, and groovy. Nothing in terms of incredible standouts to me though.

i listened to this on my phone rather than on my computer like i usually do but i want to respect the format i got going 'cause i did enjoy this album. in case anyone reading the global stuff sees this, these are written in real time while listening to the song for the first time. F.M.S.N.T.M.O - i mean this sounds like the definition of funk. sex turned music, can't go wrong. (3/5 i had to check to make sure my headphones weren't broken. -1 for the balance but spotify could have just broken this song*) Run Charlie Run - i do not know how to talk about this song but it's so fun. (5/5 the song is just correct) Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - 11 minutes baby. tickling my taint for almost 2 full minutes in this intro. Three and a Half Minutes. Four minutes in and the song starts. got that funk-blues vibe. okay i low-key love these kind of like skit/song things where it's a story in the form of a blues inspired type of expression. (5/5 i was bumping that whole intro too. tbf i reached 9 minutes and kinda forgot i was listening to this song but i'm still vibing once the vocals started again) Love Woke Me Up This Morning - very gospel. not my thing but i do love the vocals :) (3/5) I Ain't Got Nothin' - shoowop shoowop. now this kind of jazzy blues sound is something i can fuck with in these minor chords. (5/5 this slaps. and i love the lyrics, they're kinda silly but fair) T.F.T.I.E.S.Y.F - these fucking FOB song titles. it is a love song (2/5 too slow for me) Mother Nature - that drum is getting treated like a gong, damn. (3/5 short and sweet) Do Your Thing - Do It Do It. (3/5) honestly overall i have to only give this a 3/5. it was good, don't get me wrong, but this particular album being this short feels a little scattered in really showing what this group does. it was good, just too short for me to really feel all of it together. you know what i mean? *the individual song ratings have literally nothing to do with the ending vote.

Nothing wrong with this. Just comfortable easy background music.

Listened On: 2024/05/07, 2024/05/08 Track List: 1. Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On 2. Run Charlie Run ✰ 3. Papa Was a Rollin' Stone ✰ 4. Love Woke Me Up This Morning * 5. I Ain't Got Nothin' * 6. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face * 7. Mother Nature 8. Do Your Thing *

Easy listening, no complaints

It was kind of boring? Also the lyrics to "I Ain't Got Nothin'" were just bad. But there is no denying that it is good music and that their voices are phenomenal. It's just not for me. Also, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" did not have to be anywhere near that long.

It was a good album but nothing exciting to be honest.

I definitely am not used to a more "low key" sound from The Temptations. That caught me off guard! That said, it was still packed with funk and looooots of soul. It was also surprisingly topical -- props to them for that! I appreciate this album for what it was, but ultimately, it just wasn't really my jam. Even still, the musicianship is undeniable, though!

Good for a car ride, Mother Nature was probably my favorite but there were a lot of songs that were just okay as well. I love The Temptations' earlier works than this, however. Solid 3

Funky old school R&B with a side of shaker salt or something. A pretty good mix going on here.

Some real funky moments on here. 12 minutes of Papa is a proper treat. There's even some surprising before-its-time use of a particular racial slur. Overall, though, a bit patchy.

Good fun, and good cooking music!

Very funk

Красиво 7/10

A great groove and a fun listen - some tracks maybe stood out more than others on this spin, but might circle back to it another day. Three and a half. Fave track: Papa Was a Rolling Stone

Great vocals. Had a certain feeling of desperation to it in parts. You could feel the weight of the era (early 70’s) through the music

Alles nicht so richtig meins, aber „Do Your Thing“ hat dann doch wieder was.

3 stars

Good songs, not my style

War ganz okay

Pleasant, better than 'Cloud Nine' although I did pay this slightly more attention when listening. Pretty funky, enjoyable. I'd put this on at a gathering to keep the mood 'up'.

B- Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On 2 Run Charlie Run 3 Papa Was a Rollin' Stone 3 Love Woke Me Up This Morning 3 I Ain't Got Nothin' 3 The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face 3 Mother Nature 5 Do Your Thing 3 Just your run-of-the-mill quality Motown record. Simple as that. Mother Nature was Fan-frickin-tastic.

Classic. Temptations

Haven't heard this before. Listened while doing some difficult life admin. It added some lightness and fun. I would listen to this again.

The Temptations lure me in, with their rollin' basslines and interlocking voices. Underlying tensions pull me this way and that, across the dancefloor, and then to unknown territory. I'm left alone and told to do my own thing. I look back, flustered, unsure what to make of it all.

Excellent album, only knew the big famous track on it, but the rest was pretty solid. Great singing and the band behind them were bang on, with the funky wah wah laced guitar work and the slightly staccato rhythms. Yeah, that's how to do the 'N' word properly Dr Dre, no need to over egg it to the point of stupidity. You've gotta love a bit of the Temptations on a nice sunny day. A middle 3

Nothing turned me off of this album, I found it enjoyable, but it didn't necessarily tempt me to more of The Temptations.

Heard just the first few songs. Might finish in the future some time. Fun, but not really for me right now.

7 för korta låtar; 1 alldeles för lång låt. Men väldigt bra musik, helt klart! Passar många sinnesstämningar. 3,5 av 5.

Very good funk, little bit of soul. My only real complaint is that it didn’t really feel like it took any chances, just kind of middle of the road, especially for the year it released. I don’t know if it stands out enough to really bring me back again, but I was happy to listen.

The Temptations are the epitome of classy, the kind of act that if you're in a tight spot you might think, what would The Temptations do? The answer being grab a tuxedo and style it out. Turns out they were in a tight spot with this album. They wanted to keep it classy and not use the n word. On the other hand, they also wanted to keep it classy and not sing a song about an irresponsible father. They weren't happy, but they slid into the tuxedos and went to work.

Very Classic. Awesome. Wouldn’t have found this without the list! Not quite my favorite but not bad

classic funky soul, fun listen but nothing stood out to me compared to something like al green

interesting in that it feels like to different albums . one frothy pop soul and one dirty funk soul. Couple of classic tracks.

Run Charlie Run Papa Was a Rollin Stone First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

Some good songs

It was ok to listen to it. But I skipped a few songs. But I found some samples being used in drum & bass and hip hop which was nice.

Really liked this, only half an hour so didn't drag out, first half has a real funk vibe to it and then it slows down in the second half, actually think "first time ever" is one of the weaker songs on here, really liked mother nature though - not likely to listen again though

I like the Temptations but still think I haven’t heard their best yet. There were a couple of classics on this album so it deserves a 3* even if they’re not my favourite versions of the songs.

Why is Run Charlie Run not explicit?! They said the n word!

good music... a little slow for my liking but i've always liked funk because it's so vibrant and lively, even when it is slow. honestly it's not too rambunctious or so crazy enough to leave a larger impression. i had a :O moment near the end when i realized they covered 'the first time ever i saw your face' on you-know-what. solid everywhere 3/5

The album opens with three tracks of spacey funk: all wah-ed out guitars and astral synths/keyboard sounds grounded by rock-solid bass grooves and locked-in drums. This peaks with the extended jam on Papa was a Rolling Stone that gets pretty psychadelic. Transitions into a soul ballad with cheesy strings then a jazzy doo-wop story song and then a piano and strings-led ballad - these are really plodding and drag on and on - it's really not helped by coming right after such good funk material. Despite that there are some nice clean guitar tones (perfect reverb/tremelo) hitting the chords and the bass lines are so damn good - that's really the stand out performance on this album. "Mother Nature" has a jazzy-RnB soul sound (think Curtis Mayfield) and though slow, is a lot more interesting than the dull middle - more great bass work, and the best vocal performance of the album. "Do Your Thing" brings us back to the funk with a slow, deep groove, great harmonies and horns that fade out but could go on and on. Overall, The Temptations' 60s pop-soul stuff is much stronger and other artists would take this space funk sound much further in the 70s but this is an interesting transition between the two. And the bass is so good. Favorites: Papa was a Rolling Stone, Do Your Thing

Good vibes and energy like most Temptations record, and heartfelt. Personal faves were ‘Love Woke Me Up This Morning’ and ‘I Ain’t Got Nothing’. Not the most repeatability, and as it was on whilst I was cleaning, served simply for a boogie rather than more. Overall, a good 6.5/10

I got caught listening to the Papa Was A Rolling Stone radio edit so got locked in a cupboard with the 12 minute album version to teach me a lesson. Never again.

A rolling stone gathered some moss

70's soul/funk. Not as catchy as some of their other work. Standout is "Papa Was A Rolling Stone".

I wasn't keen, intro song slapped, second not so much and the 3rd Poppa was a rollin stone really threw me and I was lost by then, 4th song pulled it back enough though, I enjoyed that one and the rest of the album was good enough. ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌑🌑

Jovars!

Short and sweet

Banco. 7/10

"Heard some talk Papa doing some storefront preaching. Talking about saving souls and all the time leeching." "Everybody, everybody's got something but me. I ain't got nothing." --- Favourite Tracks: Papa Was A Rollin' Stone Summary: Enjoyed this, started off very funky which I wish I had persisted a bit more through the album. 'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone' is a track I was, of course, familiar with - and I appreciated this long version, though it does stand the whole album up and I think it would be a bit lacking without it.

Nice! very jazzy, interesting!! Probably wouldnt pick to listen to the whole album myself so it was a nice experience!!

Sounds nice, but just not really my cup of tea for extended periods of time

Recognised Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. Liked most of them, and think my dad likes some of these.

Seeing The Temptations come up didn't instil me with joy it has to be said. But the album started out better than I had expected. The second side trailed away a little in terms of quality and overall it felt a bit like one long track "Papa was a..." with some filler packed around it to make an album. It wasn't awful, but it probably hovers between 2 and 3 stars for me. I'll give it a grudging 3 as it was quite short and the main track is a classic.

kiva pikku kokoelma. rolling stone-esque...The name of it is Rolling Stone which comes from an old saying, "A rolling stone gathers no moss." HOLY FUCK WHEN I FOUND OUT,... HOLY FUCK... muteen kiva pikku albumi, small...SMALL! STAY TINY... papa was a rolling stone paras biisi... vähiten kuunneltu i ain't got nothing ehkä ensimmäinen underrated biisi historiassa? 100k kuuntelijaa ja heti perään miljoonan markan popitus...

Papa Was a Rollin' Stone is the elephant in the album, with its 12 minutes of sheer groovy delight. The rest of the songs range from the boring to the mundane...

It's got a pleasant chill vibe but I was expecting a bit more

I seen this come up for review and was really looking forward listening to it. By the end of the album I really felt disappointed, I really liked the temptations and felt this album didn't represent them at their best. Aside from Papa was a Rolling Stone, the rest of the album was very mediocre, and some of the lyrics were definitely questionable, but then I guess it was the 70s.

Some decent music- interesting songs and enjoyed it overall.

Ça a bien commencé en rhythm and soul + blues un peu. Funky pour un groupband. C'est devenu plus soft en milieu d'album. Note de passage (2.5) quand même.

I don't know, it's very strong musically, but it keeps leaving me unsatisfied, no idea why

funky soul, but nothing that blew me away. run charlie run was a surprise

Isä kuoli...Ok... Albumi hyvää musiikkia... 1972 style funky... r&b... soul...

Soul negro de principios de los 70 con canciones fáciles de escuchar y ritmos facilones. Buena voz, e intrumentalmente, buenas canciones

This was ok, I felt a little disappointed with it as I was looking forward to hooking into it but it just didn’t grab me the way I wanted it to. Never mind, hopefully more to come to broaden my horizon with them?

boring

Quite good, never heard of them before except for "i ain't got nothing".

Decent album and definitely a change from previous sounds I’ve heard from them. Enjoyable and groovy 6/10

Groovy, men ikke så spennende

A good album with some agreeable funk and soul but still looking out for a top shelf funk album that makes me sit up and pay attention.

I'm not terribly familiar with a lot of The Temptations' work (I know "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg"), so this was my first time listening to an album of theirs from start to finish. I wasn't really sure what to expect, since their only songs that I knew going into this were a couple of pop hits from the 60's. I thought this was a great funk and soul album, and it was fun to listen to. "Run Charlie Run" was my favorite track on here, and I was completely caught off guard by how serious its tone and message about white flight were (it blows my mind that a lot of these albums from the 60's and 70's were discussing social and political issues that are still incredibly relevant today). "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" was fantastic too. I grew up hearing white people criticize 'absentee black fathers,' but I don't think I've ever heard black people talk about/respond to the things that white people say about the subject (I don't even know if it's a real issue, or if it's just something evangelical white people love to say when they talk about food stamps or other 'welfare programs.' I'm not quite sure what The Temptations' message was with this song, but it definitely made me reflect on how often I heard suburban white people make generalizations and create stereotypes about the black community when I was growing up. Overall, the musical arrangements on each song were great, and the vocals were spectacular as well.

“Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” leaves the rest of this otherwise pleasant album in the dust. Really tense, dubbed out and eerie: haunted funk. Not much else stood out over an admittedly domestic-volume listen, the rest more mood than event.

this is good, groovy, rhythm n blues. one of these tracks is on all heist movies. its fantastic. good stuff. thanks motown, probably.

Some good vibes on this album but it didn’t hold my attention

Like the live performance of track 1, long and jammy track 3 and the soulful vocal on track 7. The ballad tracks do not work well for me. 1/3/7 1/3/7

Didn't realise there were so many bloody temptations. Good ol' well-established funk. In the mood for not-too-funky funk? Well here's a plateful. It'll fill that funky hole but you aren't gonna gurn baby.

Smooth funk / soul album. Good tunes.

A few good songs, a few that felt like duds. Pretty middle of the road.

70s soul/RnB really set the trend for the 90's and 00's

6/10. This was a little lower energy that I expected, which was a bit disappointing.

Highlights: "Mother Nature," "I Ain't Got Nothin'," "Run Charlie Run," "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On" The Temptations had an uphill battle to assimilate funk from the sound of 1969's Cloud Nine, but this is a real breakthrough. Better mixing, better performances, and better lyrics put them up there at the head of the genre.

Enjoyable, I liked the first couple of tracks but it lost my interest by the end.

An easy 3. Fun and interesting, and the story of being the first record after their star original lead singer left is pretty compelling.

Decent

Papa Was A Rollin' Stone

This was a great album. A funky, soulful work by the 70s-era Temptations that builds onto some solid songwriting, from the likes of Isaac Hayes, Barrett Strong, Ashford & Simpson, etc. It seems like the band had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 70s to do this album, but they pulled it off nicely. Excellent musicianship from the Funk Brothers and top notch vocals, as we would expect in a Motown production. I appreciate how all the band members shared in vocal duties. "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" is the obvious star track and is still a really powerful song, 50+ years on. Really the only negative would be "Run Charlie Run," which I'm sure was daring for the band to do in '72, but is a rough listen in 2023. High 3, not quite a 4. Fave Songs: Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, Do Your Thing, Mother Nature, The First Time Ever (I Saw Your Face), Love Woke Me Up This Morning

Some smooth soul, but nothing really stuck out as memorable. Why is the intro to rolling stone like 4 minutes long?

Sure yeah why not

i like. very funky

- The funk is insane - Papa Was A Rollin' Stone is an epic journey - ..but the funk kinda disappears after that; songs are still nice tho - Favorite songs: Run Charlie Run, Papa Was A Rollin' Stone

- Funky - Papa Was a Rolling Stone is a beautiful musical journey - a few songs lacked some energy

I love the writing, and the music is beautifully performed and it's pretty, but it's just honestly super slow. I enjoyed listening to it but I just didn't find it musically super engaging. And I don't even know if I'm allowed to add the 2nd song to my playlist as a white person. First 2 songs were my favorite though for sure. Score: 60 Art: 60

A bit of a jammer, with great harmonies and grooves. Overall just sounds very cool with strong lyrics, glad they included Run Charlie Run. I wish it would have kept the funk going, it begins to grow long and tired with the soft (yet beautiful) ballads. I also enjoyed the deep voiced man throughout!

Ye was good

I would give it another listen

Just a rhythmic album, nothing remarkable. Except that on the second track they persistently tell me that a black one will come to me. For this, -1 more stars, in general, nothing interesting.

Great first album!

7.5/10 pretty solid stuff very groovy

- Ain't Got Nothing is a pretty song Generally pretty nice album not a tonne of standout tracks but a short easy fun listen front to back generally just a pleasant album.

My first reggae album I've ever listened to actually. It didn't really do much for me. I did like it though.

Classic

Lots of good stuff here

A pretty average funk album, wasn't bad by any measure, but also didn't impress me in any way. Not my kind of style.

s70's legit vibes

Opening track is so so funky!

Off to a Funky start with a live feel we're brought into the good times vibes. But Run Charlie Run sure lets students of history know when this album was written. That song hasn't aged well even if it fully captures the sentiment of its time (and maybe has another reading I've yet to uncover). This record has Papa Was a Rollin' Stone rolling in as the third track. With that song on lock this was always going to be a classic record despite a few missteps here and there.

funky soul, but nothing that blew me away. run charlie run was a surprise

I definitely think The Temptations are sweet--their history has kind of made them a pretty daunting group to dive in to much more than the "hits," just so many lineup changes and variations and so many releases. That being said, I was stoked to get a full album of them here, but was slightly bummed to see it was the from the post-David Ruffin time for the group. Anyway this album has "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" which is an incredible track. The rest of it is great too, but this didn't really strike me as excellent.

erster song, i aint got nothin, mother nature sind sehr cool. father was a rolling stone startet cool, aber braucht ewig um richtig zu starten. insg. sehr funky und kann man mal wieder hören. die zweite hälfte ist aber relativ blues-y und eher traurig/ dramatisch

Way more of a jam than I was expecting, but I really only knew their huge singles before this. I would say 3.5 if we could give half stars, but I'm going to settle on 3 stars because its unlikely I listen to this more than once or twice 3/5

A bit harder than I expected. Enjoyable.

Some songs I liked but others not so much

Funky Temptations gonna give it to ya

Solid album, but nothing really matches the centerpiece of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone". Once it hits that, it's more miss than hit. Favorite tracks: "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", "I Ain't Got Nothin'"

Enjoyed this

Funky jams and just a great listen all around, can’t go wrong with the temptations

Very good. Soulful. Standout: Papa Was A Rolling Stone Others: I Ain't Got Nothin', The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face 3.5/5

Not shit

Best: Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone Worst: Mother Nature I feel like I am not allowed to listen to Run Charlie Run

Great funk, quality could be a bit better but enjoyed it quite a lot

All Direction is an album what i enjoy so much although has songs with much minutes that were repetitives sometimes

I love this genre but there wasn't a specific song that stuck out to me. I know from reading about it they didn't want to do ballads anymore but I like the ballads. Sorry.

Something I’ve noticed about these early 70’s R&B/funk records from established acts like the Temptation or Isley Brothers is that they tend to go all in on the sound of the time up front, get real funky and loose and then after a few songs kind of revert back to their established sound. I get it, I’m sure they didn’t want to alienate fans and listeners, while also staying current, but it’s kind of like whiplash going from the aggressive funkiness on the first three tracks and then slowing down with ballads and more traditional material on the second half of the record. I like that they close things out by getting funky again on “Do Your Thing”, but the tempo of the songs preceding it makes it feel less energetic than it could have been. Overall, its a solid record, but by this time, bands like Sly and the Family Stone (note the nods to Sly in the opening track) and Funkadelic had ratcheted up the game so much that “All Directions” ends up feeling a little quaint in comparison.

It's good some good, some that doesn't really do much for me. It's a positive listen overall even if it doesn't truly wow mw.

Papa is too long.

Who mixed ballads with disco? 3/5

A mix of sweet and pure soul along with some edgier funk. Everything is smooth and beautifully produced. I liked it.

Fun funk music that grabs you right from the first track. I find it hard to dislike this sort of music and it's a little bit of a double edged sword because I struggle with discerning the good from the bad in this genre often. The positive here is that it makes a lot of funk music (that doesn't have particularly standout elements like experimentation / phenomenal songwriting) good. The negative is that it can make the really great stuff a little watered down for me. Lyrics are definitely dated, with some hard N words thrown around in the second track but hard for me as a caucasian man to say that at the time this was a faux pas or anything. This was also the only track that I didn't really love. I do however really love track 3, "Pap Was a Rollin' Stone". It's got that great 70's wah-wah heavy wacka wacka guitar parts, along with some beautifully intriguing electric piano and rounded off with strings and reverb heavy brass. I could listen to this song every day for a few months without getting sick of it I think. Overall pretty solid effort.

Papa Was a Rolling Stone and a bunch of other tracks

Shebop shebop

"I have no problems not listening to The Temptations, which is weird..."

I think this isn't bad. I would say maybe like mid-3 range but not really a 4.

Jag är en rullande sten, kova

Some nice classic funk tunes.

dus dit is de motown bas sound

love the temps, this was average

Some classics.

Maddeningly uneven. The funkier numbers are golden, and Papa Was a Rolling Stone is of course one for the ages. The mellower number though verge dangerously close to sap.

I'm a huge fan of the Temptations' hits. According to Spotify, I have 12 of them liked, definitely among the highest for their genre. This only indicates that they're a singles band, not an album band, and this record is no exception. The highlight here is their magnum opus "Papa was a Rolling Stone", an epic contemporary to Curtis Mayfield's Superfly that takes up a third of the total runtime. Despite being an established artist for almost a decade, the production is still pretty poor in that it sounds more like a live recording in many parts rather than a studio effort. The tracks do have nice diversity, and I'm a fan of the use of the cinematic strings. No repetition, but none of them really stood out. Favorites: Papa was a Rolling Stone, Love Woke Me Up, First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Do Your Thing

Good time, great voices

Well now ... certainly a departure from "My Girl" era now, isn't it?

I absolutely loved the first half, while the second half was more predictable and felt more like what I know The Temptations sound to be like. Really damn good album. 3.5/5

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: yes, it’s elegant has an incredibly smooth feeling to it, even the longer tracks on here flow perfectly Favourite song: Track 6 - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

I like the funky stuff more than the r&b stuff. some of it is a little slow, but overall feel good vibes for a damp Monday morning.

Not doing it for me as much as the other one honestly. Just a bit safer and less exciting. Still got a few solid tracks on it.

This album has a 12 minute version of Papa Was A Rolling Stone. That's enough to merit inclusion on the list.

Toimi hyvin, perusjeekkiskolmonen

"Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" is so good that I can almost forgive the other songs for being so forgettable.

Can't beat the old R&B / funk sound. Was expecting a lot more upbeat songs, but very good all the same. First 3 songs was what I was expecting for most of the album. Funky Music sho nuff turns me on is my favorite song off this album, but really enjoyed Run Charlie Run and Papa was a rolling stone. Listening to the lyrics, Papa was a real scum bag, but the song is very good. After the first few songs, the album turns into a grab your woman and get ready for some luvin type of album. Not for all, but great songs with some good lyrics. The first time I ever saw your face has been done by a few different artist. Beautiful lyrics and at this point, you should be loving up your partner! Good sound with good lyrics makes for a good album. Wanted a little more upbeat funk, but I'm sure we'll see that from these guys in the future. Solid 3-3.5

3 Despite being born and raised in Michigan, I really haven't listened to enough Motown music for my own good. I'm embarrassed to say the only Temptations song I knew prior to my listening was My Girl, and so I kind of lumped them in with that 60s R&B sound. As I've learned from this album, the 70s brought on a musical evolution for the group I had no idea existed. Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On is a powerful slice of raw funk, reminiscent of James Brown's earlier live work, that starts the album off on an immediate high note. That energy continued on for me into Papa Was A Rollin' Stone, which felt nowhere near as long as its 12 minute runtime. The back side slowed down the tempo quite a bit, and overall I didn't find it as strong. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was a highlight, but the other songs weren't particularly memorable, or in the case of Love Wake Me Up This Morning, a little too cheesy for my taste. Takeaway - should probably listen to more Motown.

This isn't a genre I normally like, but this was pretty good! I even thought "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" was the best song and I typically hate songs >5min.

I'm familiar with their biggest hits. Run Charlie Run surprised me, I was not expecting something like that. Papa is A Rolling Stone is a classic song, although I think I've always heard a condensed version of the song. I don't remember it being 12 minutes long. The album is short but sweet.

Great album amazing harmonies

6,5/10

It isn't the worst album, however it became boring really fast. It's interesting in the use of the beat and instruments, but is really long and boring

Trećina albuma je papa was a rolling stone. Nema se šta više reć😄

Listened Before? N Wow! This is the funky-ass shit! I love this album. 70's funk at the top of the game. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Papa Was a Rollin' Stone

This didn't inspire me. I like some Temptations stuff but I guess it's older than this.

Smooth.

Not what I was expecting when I saw Temptations, this was a funk album, not R&B doowop music. Overall it was pretty good, papa was a rolling stone was the only song I recognized.

Good but not great. "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" is an all-time classic (although I'll take the 7-minute single version over the nearly 12-minute album version, thanks), "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On" is properly funky, and the rest of the album was serviceable.

All Directions as an album seems a bit disappointing to me. It remains a collection of covers. But then it has some nice highlights, especially 'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone' of course. You can tell they're stuck in the 60's after all. Artists like Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield moved on to soul and had become a bit more socially critical. That also shows a little bit on this album, but for the majority this remains popular Motown. The music is beautiful and the harmony vocals of The Temptations are certainly good.

The rhythm section on the opening track is next level. The rest of the songs didn't spark much interest.

Fun, interesting songs. Definitely worth a second listen.

A classic, love Motown. Just don’t think this was their best album.

Solid album

Emerging from the 1960s, the Temptations were forced to leave their signature “Motown Sound” behind in search of a more commercial and progressive sound. What resulted (besides numerous lineup changes) was a slew of albums in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s known as the Temptations’ “Psychedelic Era”. This record was on the tail end of their psychedelic era. The Temptations were able to land a number 1 single in “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” after a drought in chart success. The first side contains funky numbers such as a 12 minute long version of the aforementioned #1 single, and the political tune “Run Charlie Run”. Side 2 opts for a more mellow tone, with many songs featuring orchestra components. The record ends with a funky number complete with horns. Overall, I believe The Temptations fit in well to the funk sound. Standout tracks: Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Do Your Thing, The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face

Papa was a Rollin Stone - classic Ugh, idk. I wanted to love this one more that I did

This album centers around the strength of "Papa was a rolling stone." Though I'm sure the single version was edited down, I absolutely love that long, exploratory album versions were not uncommon during this era. Nice to get lost in a real jam.

I wanna like it more than I do. It's good and sounds nice, but I enjoy other albums of theirs more I think.

Made me sleepy but swingy

Somehow dated, but also some groovy stuff here and there

Review #5 of 1001 3/5 This one was slightly disappointing if I'm honest. This album moves a bit too slow for my taste. This band was extremely talented in their day, but I found myself just waiting for this album to end. Favorite song: I Ain't Got Nothin'

Bit of soul, bit of searing funk. I’m a particular fan of the latter. “Run Charlie Run” and “Do Your Thing” are my favourites, but not so much the soppiness of “Love Woke Me Up this Morning” and “I Ain’t Got Nothin”.

I recognize "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" from movie soundtracks. Perhaps the devil wears prada? It occurs to me how many songs I will hear on this album list that are sampled in songs of today. "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" moved me. I really liked "Mother Nature."

We want the funk!

PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE...
