Reviews (page 3 of 7)

Can’t find much on this band but this album was really good. They seem underrated to me. Reminds me a bit of the smiths.

Never heard of this one, solid songwriting.

I'd give it a 4.5 but I'll round down to a 4. Easy listening and strong lyrics and acoustics. Strong tracks throughout with my standouts being Love Goes On, Streets, and Was There Anything I Could Do with Anything being my favorite.

Great production

Really nice sounding album throughout not a single dull moment and it has a vibe that I definitely enjoy it's nothing too incredibly special though

Je sais pas pourquoi j'aime bien mais j'aime bien

Really enjoyable

Perfectly pleasant. Has it changed me as a person? No. But this album is a beautiful example of pretty, likable 80's music.

Nice record to listen too. Truly reflects its era.

The accompaniment is actually good and the vocals are ok. "Streets of your Town", "I'm alright" are my favourites

Prijetna glasba. Spominja me malo na The Cardigans.

I was not aware of this album in 1988, but I really would have liked it then. I really enjoyed its sound, especially the first two songs.

À discovery for me, and a very pleasant one at that! A style of music that I relate to easily, done with freshness and style. Surprised I had not heard of them before. Perhaps they weren’t big in Canada…

This was good

Couple good songs, better than I expected

Vibing with this one for sure

Nice one, Ill definitively will listen again. Love the vibe

Very solid music. Nothing really distinctive but well crafted.

I like “Love Goes On” and “Was There Anything I Could Do?”. The rest is pretty solid as well.

Production sounds dated but still some really catchy tunes and some fine storytelling..

I’ve never heard of this band, but they kind if remind me of 10,000 Maniacs. I like the acoustic driven songs.

Kinda like REM meets Smiths, nice and listenable. Streets of Your Town is a banger tho

Need to revisit this asap. Pop sensibility steering well wide of sentimentality, spacious production values. Late 80s sophistopop minus the pretentiousness.

Sounds like The Smiths met Legião Urbana.

I really enjoyed this... was made in '88, but felt like a mid 90s indy-pop band. Definitely ahead of its time.

This is good - really good. Well-crafted songs delivered with some unashamed pop confidence. The late 80's production doesn't surrender to the trends of the time. It brings out the best in the song writing. How Streets of Your Town wasn't a massive hit I don't know.

Solid. Not too slow, not too fast. Anyone can enjoy this album.

Não conhecia. Legal.

I am a fan of such albums, 10 songs, not too long, weak tracks are out, no bullshit, just good music. My note would be 4 stars with a minus, nice vocals and guitars, clean remaster, but nothing actually special

Yo that's kinda schmackin

Real neat, like a folky version of the Smiths.

This was rad.

4 stars for Streets Of Your Town

Contains one of my favourite songs of all time - 'Streets of Your Town'. Unfortunately the rest of the album doesn't quite match up.

Such a beautiful album...probably my favourite Go-Betweens album. Lush and subtle with poignant lyrics. Close to 5 stars, but ultimately 4 for me because it's not a style that I turn to often

80 90lar londrasina donebilsem keske artik havasindan midir suyundan midir nasi bi memleketsin

Haven't heard this before, rather enjoyed it. Felt quite a bit ahead of its time. I heard some 90s, some 00s, some 2010s. Fun album.

typical of the alt style i've always loved - acoustic guitars, jingle-jangle clear guitar, melodic leads.

I enjoyed this album. Pretty folksy. Streets of your town is the standout track. Gave me nostalgia because it was used for an ad about a decade ago for my home town.

I dig this a lot!

uhhhh.... where has this lil gem been??!!

I like it

Nice, eighty

Oké albums, geen hoogvlieger maar wel van genoten op de achtergrond

7/10. I quite like this, just a super chill, straightforward brand of rock, the lyrics are hit or miss and the singing is decent. Honestly, my main complaint is that they really like to delay rhymes from when you expect to hear them, which always irritates me

Pues un disco agradable. No estoy seguro de por qué sería un GRAN disco, pero me puso contento. Lo que sí es que suena a lo que luego muchos dirían que suena "indie". Quizá por eso me gusta. Mis favs "Streets of Your Town" y "Was There Anything I Could Do?". 7.5/10

Quite a nice surprise, I’ve been hating all the 80’s records so far. Good one

Fun album! Very “Fleetwood Mac” if Fleetwood Mac were a bit later on. Some good tunes though

Aussie pop! This was interesting. Fit the mold but definitely unique.

det här albumet har något alltså. riktigt gött häng

Lyrics are brilliant Love, Regret, melancholia, not an ounce of fat on them... musically a combo of velvet underground & love. Great album. Will be listening again

very relaxing. nice and catchy

I thought it was pretty good. Sounded like something from a 1990 movie or something. Soft/acoustic/alternative rock with a lot of grand love ballads. I enjoyed it, but can't really see myself coming back to it over and over again.

Music is super pretty and the melodies are amazing but Robert sounds like a bad karaoke version of Morrissey

This album was ok. Decent, but forgettable. Did I need to hear this album? No, but it was pleasant enough. Pretty mellow. There was something familiar about "Love Is A Sign", I may have heard it before but I'm not sure.

want to like them more than i do. great singles band.

Non-offensive and forgettable.

Another middle of the road album on this list.

It was fine. Not very memorable either way So once again-why is another middle of the road album on this list

Really nice. Bisexual? 3.5

yaaa totally fine... no notes

Normal, no me voló la cabeza, pero hubo un tema en el que me gustaron los coros. Tenía algo de U2, algo de Roger Taylor, no sé.

Some cool parts in the beginning, but a lot blended together Standout songs: Love goes on! Quiet Heart

They sound a lot like The Smiths, hopefully their singer is less of a Twat. A nice little album for a nice little band. This falls into the bands where I don't think they will ever make it into my collection but not where I would turn off the music if I heard them.

A Brisbane band that started out post-punk in '79? Yes, please! Though almost 10 years into their career here, they sound a lot like James and at times the Smiths, and I love both. Great production. Will be digging into them more.

I listened to this album during my walk, feeling proud as I continued to acclimate myself to a new routine of daily cardio. When I pressed play on this album, I was certainly not expecting to here what sounded like an early indie pop rock sound mixed with some light Spanish guitar flourishes. 16 Lovers Lane is one of the most surprising albums I've seen earn a spot on this list, simply because of how unassuming it is. I definitely enjoyed the album, but I'm surprised it left enough cultural impact to stick around. With its gentle soft rock and light strings, this feels like the kind of overly sincere heartfelt album that would get clowned on by music critics and the popular audience, but I've always been partial to those kinds of albums anyways. However, even with my proclivity towards this gentler sound, I still sometimes found some parts of this album to be a little overly saccharine, without the creative lyricism to back it up. The Go-Betweens crafted a perfectly pleasant and easy album which I enjoyed my time with, but not much of it lingers too long beyond that initial experience. Highlights: Love Goes On!, Quiet Heart, Streets of Your Town, Was There Anything I Could Do?

liked it! favs are "streets of your town" and "was there anything i could do" :-)

This slightly soporific, mostly mid-tempo Eighties alt-rock collection arrives compliments of Grant McLennan and Robert Forster, two songwriters who don't quite add up to one. Which isn't to say anything here is bad per se; occasionally it's quite good, especially on the back half where the energy picks up a bit thanks to the hit "Streets of Your Town" and the Smiths-esque "Was There Anything I Could Do?" But even on those tracks I was unable to shake the sense that these guys can't see themselves accurately - mooning over the idea of women, full of half-baked love metaphors, and utterly incompetent with regard to the messy reality of actual relationships. Forster is just self-aware enough to change "die" to "dive" on the closer "Dive for Your Memory," lest he freak out his object of affection, but not self-aware enough to quite realize the degree to which he's bullshitting himself about (presumably) that same girl's disinterest in him on "I'm All Right." Figures that many of the most fascinating lines on this album are cracks in the Nice Guy veneer: "I don't wanna let you out of my sight." "Late at night when I want you I lock you in my room." "What did I say that made you cry?" "You can't say no forever." "I have to see straight and that will make me unkind." "This town is full of battered wives," McLennan sings on "Streets of Your Town," and I guess maybe he'd know. No wonder the subject of "Was There Anything I Could Do?" is pursuing liberation with such gusto - she's finally out of the orbit of guys like these.

Never heard of them, but they fit in with the 80s sounds. Some great tracks on here.

It’s like a blander The Smiths, or Arcade Fire. Perfectly ok sort of shimmery pop. Don’t confuse them with the Go-Gos - I found myself trying to rub one out over a bunch of Australians while trying to work out which one was Belinda Carlisle.

80s jangle pop from Australia. Kind of enjoyed it. Didn't recognise any of the songs.

Fun listen.

This is pleasant listening.

Perfectly pleasant and entirely unremarkable folksy jangle-pop. Baffled by the comparisons with the Smiths. It's what the Smiths might sound like if Marr played unremarkable acoustic strumming, and Moz wrote unremarkable love song lyrics. As in, nothing like the Smiths at all.

Solid fun, if a bit underwhelming since I already knew the best song, streets of your town

I enjoyed this. It’s nice to listen to an album of love songs once in a while. I added “… Love Goes On!” to my playlist.

# Album Name: 16 Lovers Lane # Artist: The Go-Betweens # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Very average album. Couple of songs added to the playlist though. # Top Tunes: love goes on / streets of your town # Would I listen to it again? Just the singles

Not bad but nothing exceptional. Enjoyed it, very easy to listen to.

Alright but not too memorable

Not bad but also could've been better. I really liked the acoustic sound with added sprinkles of electric guitar, very memorable sound. Too melancholic at moments which ruined it for me. I'm just not sad enough to understand these sort of bands. Favourite tracks: You Can't Say No Forever, Was There Anything I Could Do? 3/5

Favorite track(s): Love Goes On!, Streets of Your Town, Was There Anything I Could Do?

1001 albums to hear before you go between life 113# its a nice record. 'Streets of your town' was on my rotation for a lot of time and i never thought that this band had anything more to offer. It reminded me of U2 on 'quiet heart' but people is talking much about the smiths and i see the similarities too. It only faults on the voice and crazy catchy guitar licks and choruses.

La verdad que no conocia el album, pero muy bueno.Me gustó

I liked this. Very REM vibe, I'll deep dive into this band and will definitely give a few more listens

Reminded me in places of The Water Boys. Not unpleasant but not inspiring

Solid indie rock 3/5

a decent listen. I recognize the 'hit' and could really enjoy the rest of the album with more listening time. 3/5

Not bad, nice chill music,.

the smiths da shopee.

Within 4 bars of "Streets Of Your Town" starting I could tell it was the single; same for "Was There Anything I Could Do?". They're clearly better than anything else on the album, most of which is a bit run of the mill.

Landed on a high 3. A great sound, but the songs are just not memorable

Today’s album is in a style i love, its big music via jangle pop. But the songs aren’t always landing for me. Love the arrangements throughout but i think his voice isn’t engaging me. Ended up a high 3.

Very middle of the road. Nothing overly exciting about it, nothing terrible.

Very nice.

It’s British it’s jangly, it must be the 90s!

Kivan kuuloista alt rokkia. Vähän sellaista kantri folk vibaa ja joka kappaleessa onkin akustista kitaraa. Oikeesti kivoja kappaleita, aussi aksentti ei vaan ihan toimi laulussa. Parhaat: Was There Anything I Could Do?, Clouds, Love Goes On!, Streets of Your Town

This was good. Never heard of them. 80s pop sound that I’m not familiar with, I like their take. Gave me some Velvet Underground vibes at times. Might listen further, might not. Enjoyed the album.

A noticeably intense depiction of love

Nice tunes nothing too shout about…some interesting love lyrics.

Very mediocre

not bad not bad bit of me somewhat 7/10

really lovely highlights: love goes on!

*1988. Australian pop. *Very 80s alt pop ala INXS, Midnight Oil, etc. *Not life changing music, but I enjoy this genre. RATING - 7/10

Favorite Song: The Streets of Your Town

One of the most mid late 80s alternative folk entries I've heard. It's fine and if you discovered this then, and saw them live, I'm sure this is part of your soul. For me, I can listen to a half dozen other random albums from this era that I think are better, but that probably aren't.

This is not bad! I really enjoyed some of the songs but there are not enough hits here to be a good record. So it’s just average.

Lowkey tender.

bit of a u2 vibe I guess

Started out strong, but then it got really British really fast

Nice surprise

This was ok, I quite enjoyed listening to it. I definitely won't remember anything about it though. No songs, not the band name, nothing. But it was ok. That's the main thing.

Sounds quite a bit like all of the other bands in this genre from the time frame. Absolutely nothing here is remarkable. This is the definition of 2.5 stars. I will go 3 because its not bad, it just exists.

I might like this a lot. I’m going to listen to it at least two times through

Pretty good

Not bad but nothing outstanding.

Fun and easy listen

Reminds me a lot of the Flying Nun bands of the same era.

Really going between the lines of meh and good

What a pleasant album! The Go-Betweens remind me of The Smiths, and a little bit of U2 at times. The guitars have a nice, glossy sparkle on them in addition to some jangly strumming. I enjoyed this, though my mind wandered a bit while driving and listening. This isn’t music that demands your attention. But it’s very nice accompaniment to whatever you’re doing. Overall, a very good album that I wouldn’t have put on the 1001 albums list -- but that I wasn’t mad about hearing at all.

This one really surprised me and I liked it more than I thought I would after judging it by the album cover. Clean poppy tunes that are really crisp and fun when they want to be. "Streets Of Your Town" is great and I could see it being a solid modern indie pop tune that would have people really bopping in a festival crowd. Sometimes after hearing a record on this list I'll go back and listen to the standout tracks again and this time I went and listened to "Streets Of Your Town" on repeat and it like four times. It's a great song.

Okay, but I think there are Australian albums that came out in the 1980s that happen to be more essential and should probably instantly replace this album: Men at Work BUSINESS AS USUAL Big Pig BONK I am perplexed by anyone who thinks this sound like The Smiths. This doesn't sound anything like The Smiths to me. I actually prefer this to The Smiths (not for knee jerk reasons against Morissey; I genuinely prefer this), so you could replace one of their albums, (they and Morissey have plenty on here) with this if you really think it sounds like The Smiths. Man, I wish we could get some more straight up 80s pop that was actually impactful on the culture and music development in the years after. Dimery seems to avoid the best stuff for ridiculous reasons.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is a pop/rock album with relatively stripped down instrumentation and nice vocals. This was a pleasant listen, albeit unremarkable. I wouldn't mind hearing this again but I doubt I would seek it out.

A pleasant little acoustic pop rock record. Nothing unique or interesting here.

Very pleasant jangle pop. Not a lot to like or dislike musically. But maybe the lyrics *just* elevate it to a 3*.

pretty decent

It’s nice and forgettable for the most part

this was really nice

Not heard before, very deacon sprout.

Favorite Track: Streets of Your Town

If I were to look up "Generic soppy britpop album" I think this would be the suggestion of any search engine

This is very generic. I didn't really get anything new out of this. I kind of zoned out a lot listening to this. Some songs are pretty good, others are ok.

pretty bog standard for the style, which i'm soft on. was a little surprised to learn they're Australian. consistently pretty alright, but Streets of Your Town really stands out musically and lyrically. deserves to be one of the 1001? debatable. depends on your personal feelings on 80s indie pop. it should be represented on here by bands other than The Smiths, but i dont know if this is what i would pick for that niche

Enjoyable 80s indie rock.

Pleasant background music. Kinda liked it.

Not terrible. But I really didn't like the vocals which didn't sound bad but just lacked ambition. Liked the jangly guitar work though.

красивый звук

Decent enough album.

Cito un'altra review: "Pleasant enough pop music, but ultimately relatively boring. There were a couple hints at interesting vocal lines early on."

A nice sounding album that reminds of R.E.M. mixed with a little bit of Smiths (featuring a less annoying version of Morrissey). I didn’t hear any major takeaways or highlights, but it’s a solid album throughout.

Some great peaks on this album with Quiet Heart and I’m All Right but nothing else too noteworthy.

Como unos smiths mas flojos y mas australianos pero que si lo escuchas como yo (acostada abajo de la ventana de casa de sofi a las 10 am mientras las chicas duermen) se disfruta 6,5/10

A really pleasant collection of pop songs. Nothing earth-shattering, challenging or influential, but very easy to listen to.

It was fine 80'2 music. Nothing to really gety excited about.

3.5 Australian smiths? Some really nice songs, but ultimately nothing super special

J'ai passé un bon moment ! Sans être exceptionnel, cest un album qui tient la route. 3.5+/5

Yet another album that is good sometimes very good, but I would have been fine if I had never heard it before I died - maybe there are not 1001 albums that anyone needs to hear while on planet earth, but I get that 582 albums you must hear before you die lacks the commercial appeal of 1001. Absolutely nothing wrong with 16 Lovers Lane and a lot that is right with a few songs being strong jangly indie pop/rock stuff that are a joy to hear but too much of it just blends together and I'm not entirely certain that I will ever want to hear the whole album again or delve deeper into their back catalog but I completely understand why some would and why they have a small but loyal fan base decades after their heyday . I guess I could have just said that the album is not crap (far from it) but it's not exactly my cup of tea even if I did find myself with a smile on my face 2-3 times while hearing 16 Lovers Lane. 3.5/5 P.S. I ended up hearing 'Before Hollywood' the second album by The Go-Betweens and I did like that one better (4/5) as it didn't sound as focused on getting a hit single.

3 stars a bit meh

Wasn't familiar with this band, but I enjoyed this album. 3.49/5

Just a decent album. There a couple of very fun lively songs here but nothing crazy good. It definitely feels a bit to repetitive both in lyrics and instruments. All the songs are love-related, which is annoying. It’s an okay album, nothing to write home about.

Enjoyed this more on a second listen, so maybe it will grow on me more with time. I only knew "Streets of Your Town" going into it, but there are quite a few other good tracks too. Overall a pleasant listen, but not particularly original - sometimes sounds quite derivative of The Smiths, other times Echo & The Bunnymen.

Not terrible. Wouldn’t listen again, though. Some else reviewed this as “We have The Smiths at home” and that’s pretty spot on.

Unfortunately this is pretty forgettable but if I remember right I think I enjoyed it.

This was alright. I listened very passively but I liked the vibe. 3 stars.

Pleasant but somewhat forgettable late 80s jangle pop rock, kind of like a happier Smiths.

17/03/2026 1. love goes on! - nice. love the chorus! very jangly... love the strings. *2. quiet heart - like the chorus. harmonica? his singing in this reminds me of abit of bernard sumner? love the ending. *3. love is a sign - folksy guitar... can def see the smiths comparisons now.... really liking this one. *4. you can't say no forever - loving this one! really like the lyrics of it :) 5. the devil's eye - not as fond of this one, but wouldn't complain if it was on. 6. streets of your town - very jangly. alright. 7. clouds - guitar at the start really reminds me of sweetness and light by lush. songs are starting to sound a bit samey for me. 8. was there anything i could do? - wanting this album to be over now... 9. i'm all right - same as prev. 10. dive for your memory - like the chorus. alright! think the strings at the start really helped this for me, but still felt a bit generic 80s jangle pop and definitely lost my enthusiasm towards the end - still nice, just not great and probably wouldn't listen to most of the songs again.

Feels like a very straightforward and sort of basic album in modern times, but I guess it was somewhat influential in its era.

I think it was boring (But maybe 2 is too harsh)

1: Dive For Your Memory 2: Streets of Your Town 3: Quiet Heart

Yeah fine, I guess. Streets of your Town is a clear standout.

Me gusto, personalmente no lo destacaría de sobremanera pero una que otra canción si que he guardado, nada mal. 6.5/10.

hard to nail down. Gave it 2x listen, and thought it was pretty good.. but nothing stands out. Still, solid

Yeah, it was OK. Not as "pop" as I expected, but undistinguished really.

Very blah

This moment in music comes from music I like and ultimately leads to music I like, but I don't really want to spend time here.

Not too bad, but nothing really that memorable about it. Kind of generic to a certain type of 80s vibe

Plain as a donut with all the frosting licked off of it

alright

C’est bien! Ouain, rien d’autre à ajouter

Fun album

A nice indie rock album that's a bit softer than I typically like. I wish there were more drums specifically. This all sounds nice, but it's missing that underbelly that really makes it rock.

Low-fi, alt-rock

A relief after orbital 2 to get some musicians playing music. A little samey, but its a nice sound with some ok songs.

Listened to this while coming out of anasthesia, probably didn't help with my memory of it. Didn't hate it Fave track: Streets of Your Town

Kind of enjoyed this one, more than expected. 3.5/5

2.8 Sounded like the taste of tepid water.

John Mulaney has a joke about making a birthday poster. It’s about how you start out overly ambitious and then have to squish the last letters in at the end because you started too big on the first ones. That’s kind of how I feel about this list. The guy who made it was like yeah we’lol do 1001 albums and then after a couple hundred realized he bit off more than he could chew and had to fill in the rest with just albums that he’d heard before or at least heard of. That’s not to say this album is bad but it’s not great. A lot of it sounds like a Lou Reed cover band trying to do originals. I like Lou Reed, but there are plenty of his albums that would be better for this list than this album.

música mais romanticazinha, linha tenue entre lenta e animada, boas para final de tarde.

enjoying the chill indie vibe, i agree with people who have said it is smiths-esque. more of a background album but overall enjoyed. fave track - was there anything i could do. 3.5

Nothing bad about this but theres better bands with a similar sound 3/5

Kind of like The Smiths Lite but in a good way. I have never heard of this band before but can see myself checking out some more of their work. Playlist track: Was There Anything I Could Do?

Love Goes On - 4.5/5 Quiet Heart - 3.5/5 Love is a Sign - 2.5/5 You Can't Say No Forever - 2.5/5 The Devil's Eye - 2/5 Streets of Your Town - 3.5/5 Clouds - 3/5 Was There Anything I Could Do? - 4/5 I'm All Right - 3.5/5 Dive for Your Memory - 3/5 I was fearing another bad listen when I saw the combination of Australian jangle pop band, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was a fairly decent listen. Like listening to the Smiths without Morrissey but also somehow blander. It's not offensive or anything, just that I think that there could have been slightly more for me to bump it up another star but the slow songs after the opener nearly killed it for me. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Love Goes On, Was There Anything I Could Do?

I kinda liked this.

jadore

very mellow classic pop it’s aight

*Very pleasant. Pop sensibilities. I've heard them many times but not a whole album. Deserves a deeper listen from me to pick up more in the lyrics. 3.5/5 right now for me

I like to make a Joke about how big established, nostalgia-based fast food companies like McDonald's should change their slogan to: McDonald's It's Food! That is exactly what the Go-Betweens feel like. The Go-Betweens It's Music! Everything is fine about them musically & lyrically, it just seems forgettable, disposable & just kinda THERE. I liked it & I wouldn't hate if you put on but... It's music! 3

Streets of your town instantly recognisable. Rest if album passed me by without much impression

This was another album that I wasn't expecting much from, and that I was pleasantly surprised from. It was perfect for the mood I found myself in this morning, that being exhausted. I'm sure it has a lot to offer for those active listening, but I was just enjoying the sound of the album. Favorites: Love Goes On!, Streets of Your Town, I'm All Right

Was unfamiliar but really liked my first listen, will return.

It’s ok.

I wanted to enjoy this more. The instrumentation is too boring for the lyrics to be this inane.

I knew nothing about this band, but I still didn't use a private session for Spotify. It was surprisingly good, it was very 80's, like I could hear a lot of the songs as background in a Jon Hough's flick. I don't mean that as an insult.

Solid album, but nothing that stood out to me

Interesting to hear an album that hints at both the janglier end of indie music and the emotional aspirations of bands like U2 while ultimately sounding like neither and playing like a full pop album. You feel like you could hear an album a lot like this coming out today.

Pure 80s college rock. Similar t Lets Active

It's alright, but others did it better. 3.

pretty good, nothing special

Aggressively meh

A decent selection of singer-songwriter style melodies. Plesant enough to enjoy.

Enjoyed it, bit bloated as an album but good songs like streets of your town and love goes on

This was fine. Just incredibly, incredibly mid.

Not bad

Pleasant but unoriginal

I found the album to be a bit generic and there was really nothing here that stood out to me to warrant a repeat listen.

I found this album perfectly pleasant, at times they reminded me of The Smiths. I don’t know if the vocals were particularly strong, maybe I need more convincing, but musically, I found this interesting and would happily return.

This is half decent. I like the genre, kind of nostalgic, kind of ... still current. I suppose my only criticism is an old one: I think in smaller than full album doses I would like them better in a way. It is not that it is too redundant, which is a real issue with some bands, even good ones (!). I suppose it is just a better "playlist" band than a whole album at a time type. This concept is easy to understand when you are listening and less so when you are reading someones critique. So I suppose just give it a listen and see if that is what you also get, or not.

5.5/10

another pleasant album which does sound a bit dated, like the smiths, some U2 in one song and even some josh rouse in another song (josh rouse is so much better than that song). but it’s a solid album. 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

fun ! I suppose ! forgettable. ? three!

Pretty sounding jangly indie pop from Australia. Sounds like the smiths accompanying the bastard child of Lou Reed and Bernard Sumner. Hardly a classic album but a very familiar sound to those of us of a certain generation. Prefab Sprout did it infinitely better…..

Good album

Jolly in parts

Like a cross between the smiths and inxs

Nice 80s sound. New wave elements...very poppy...clean and well produced. Nothing too memorable but not a bad listen

On paper this should be right up my alley - a bit of The Smiths here, a bit of Frightened Rabbit there but I found it somewhat underwhelming. To be fair it sounded better on the headphones. I was almost willing myself to like it more than I did. His voice is the weak point. And they needed to go either more jangly or more beefy on the production which was a bit wishy-washy. 3.5 rounding down

Very 90s acoustic pop songs. Every song flows into the next seamlessly. Sounds a bit dated but I enjoyed it. 3.0/5.0

Some interesting songs, overall quite a generic sound. Fave Tracks: Love Goes On, Streets of Your Town, I'm All Right, Dive for Your Money 3.2/5

A solid indie-rock album with everything I expect from the genre. From the soft singing to the guitar picking. Another album that isn't bad but doesn't do much for me either.

It's okay. Love Goes On! and Was There Anything I Could Do? were my favorites. The rest was pretty meh but it was not annoying enough for me to rate it a 2.

This album sits right on the cusp of the alternative revolution, in the college rock days. I dig the effortless acoustic nature of it. It reminds me of the Cowboy Junkies and R.E.M. in their more acoustic moments. I’m not quite sure it’s special enough to come back to often but if I found a vinyl or CD copy of it in a used bin, I wouldn’t pass it up.

Enjoyed this a lot! I like his vocals and all their different instrumentation. I’m at a 3.5, might be a 4 with more listens.

It was a pleasant listen but nothing more

Started strongly, but finished weakly

Perfectly cromulent 80s rock. Fine but doesn't stand out. Textbook example of a 3/5 album on this list.

It's hard to judge - in one hand they are so meh that they fall perfectly between a 0 and a 5. In the other hand they are The Go-betweens and they went between, so they fulfilled their purpose and that would be a 5 stars. But if they get 5 stars they won't be in between and therefore will get a 2.5 score ... My head hurts

Few songs I really enjoyed. A bit boring at times. Not sure I’d relisten to full thing again

This would be my first introduction to the Go-betweens and I enjoyed them. Formed nearly 50 years ago, the music sounds relevant still. This sounds like new wave albeit a little more commercial. Their names is lifted from an eponymous novel and it shows as their lyrics read like literature. Solid music though a bit forgettable. Three stars on the precipice of a fourth.

Not really that interesting. Has some good sounds and was listenable but not much else.

I enjoyed this album listen! This album didn’t blow me away but it was a solid indie rock album from The Go-Betweens! I had fun listening to this album and I would check it out again in the future!

Not bad really. I wouldn’t add it to my play lists but the melodies were solid, and the lyrics actually intelligible. All around a positive upbeat album.

Nice enough jangly pop rock. Bit U2

Un autre album très ordinaire dans le sens de « peu original », « peu savoureux ». Pas mauvais, mais sans réel intérêt.

Sounds very current. Indie bands wished they could write like that today

Actually not that bad! Kinda nondescript but very chill music, good production and pleasant voices!

started out pretty well, but honestly started getting a little tedious. It's pleasant enough, but it's very beige and same-y. 2.5 stars.

I’m not sure this is the right soundtrack for what the three on the cover were looking to get up to.

This is really nice. 80s aren't usually my forte, but this record is a good vibe and easy to listen to. Classic 80s vocal harmonies with some smooth-strumming guitars complementing each track. Very easy, chill experience.

I'd never heard of this one. I did enjoy it although the chances are slim that I'll ever hear it again.

Perfectly nice pop album, but not essential if you're not Australian

It was good, not familiar with this group and it's music, will listen to it from time to time. The alternative rock nature makes it enjoyable.

Overall: 5/10 One of the most "meh" albums I've heard in my entire life. I feel like I could listen to it 1001 times and I still wouldn't remember a single song or note from this thing. I almost wish it was a actually bad cause then I'd have something more interesting to say about it. Fav Song: The Devil's Eye

The jangliness here is especially easy for me to digest. However, I'm not sure this album will ever rise much higher in my estimations; the maaaaajor lack of diversity and dynamism holds me back from enjoying it as much as I want to. 3.5/5

I was surprised that I never heard of this group, as I was into this vibe back when the album was released. In the end it started to sound like it was a generic form of the music from this time.

Seems like this one would take more than one listen to glean all of its intricacies. But the production and narrow melodies are conspiring to keep me at bay. I didn't hate it, but it seemed very one-note.

really enjoyed this! feels like a precursor to the good stuff

Never heard of them. Kind of a niche pop sound to me.

Average blend of the 80s 90s and 60s sounds. A little bit of a bring me down album

I don't if it's just me, but I don't hear the Smiths influence, still it's boring. 3/5

Suht OK kuulamine, enamjaolt sujus neutraalselt ja mõni üksik lugu jäi kõrva ka. Aga pigem selline plaat, mida uuesti ei kuulaks.

At first I was worried this would end up being generic 80s indie/alt-rock (a common theme on this list) but the introduction of strings and varied instrumentation here and there was nice. I mean, it IS generic in that way, but in an inoffensive way. The lead is one of many trying to do the Depeche Mode/Morrisey thing which works well enough, but it's weird hearing it in an Aussie accent (which I say as somebody also down under). fav tracks: Streets of your Town

I was vibing to it

Not bad but not my fav

I really dig the singing

Fine but forgettable.

This was a fine and pleasant listen. But like 30+ years ago I most likely won’t return for another listen, and instead continue to focus on much better Aussie bands like The Church and The Hoodoo Gurus.

Was I supposed to know one of these songs? I didn’t feel anything about this really, one way or the other. So…3? 3.

Nice listen. I feel like it sounded like different artists at different moments. Some bob Dylan, maybe a lil U2. Totally fine album but I’m not sure it’s that memorable. Probably worth another listen but not sure if I’ll give it another spin. 2.75

This album goes into the category of totally fine but forget about immediately. Nothing really stands out good or bad. Just right down the fairway pretty enjoyable stuff hit probably not going to revisit. 2.75/5

- There are actually a few really good songs on this record. Pretty good, worth hearing. -

I liked it but I kinda forgot what it sounded like

This is a five star three star album.

This album should have been used for various 1980s Rom Com flicks. It's better as background music. Favorite Track: "You Can't Say No Forever".

redelijk standaard, 1 hitje

A bunch of vaguely Irish sounding love songs.

very late 80s radio friendly guitar pop. in a good way.

Unmemorable but I didn't mind listening to it

My only experience with this band has been their song Streets of Your Town, which was featured on the Triple J Hottest 100 of Australian Songs list. It also stands as the most memorable song on the album. It's pretty generic 80s jangle pop - just with Australian vocals.

Never heard of, but right away enjoyed the opening track. Reading about the album’s song writing process was interesting as well as the lyrics, many of which I imagine were inspired by romantic relationships that were going on within the band.

interessante

This was fine, nothing really stood out.

This was a fun album. "Love Goes On!" Is the standout track. The backing vocals do a great job too. It is upbeat and a good time, but not super technical. Actual rating...3.5. Liked Songs: "Love Goes On!" , "Quiet Heart" , "You Can't Say No Forever" , "The Devil's Eye" , "Was There Anything I Could Do?" , "I'm Alright"

Good 3.5

I have had so many of these middle-of-the-road nameless bands recently. It is fine, it sounds like a watered down version of Echo and the Bunnymen. Actually, every song just sounds like a slowed down version of Big Mouth Strikes Again, but without the catchy melody. This album is fine, and a couple of songs stood out, but I did not need to listen to this before I died. High 3.

boring brit pop correction: aussie pop

This was ok! Sounds similar to many things we’ve listened to, namely The Smiths but better because of the fiddle and violin. I actually looked that up and it’s a woman named Amanda Brown on the strings. She’s five stars for me, but the rest is a three. I did like and save the song Clouds… which reminds me there’s some really nice guitar on this album too, but the songs as a whole are just kind of “mid” to be gen z about it.

This was pleasant but a little forgettable. I did like Streets of your Town quite a bit.

Good voice. 2,9

I liked it, but nothing stood out to me on the record.

Not a lot of use of the drums. Like sounds like three different acoustic guitars. The theme is always love. It’s all little adult, contemporary and boring to be honest. Lots of potential so I’m sorry to say I didn’t care for it very much. It’s good but not my taste.
