Reviews (page 3 of 13)

Love the harmony of these 4 guys. Great music, album full of great songs.

huge banger

Almahhoost CUT my heeeeair/ Happened justheotherday/ Was gettin/ KIIIIIIIIINDA lawwwwng/ Yeah Déjà Vu is right. Eat your heart out Olivia Rodrigo, this is Crosby, Stills and fuckin' Nash. ...AND THEN NEIL YOUNG!!!

fabulous album

Already liked them but this album gave me more of an appreciation of their guitar writing and riffs. I feel like I hear quite a bit of Beatles influence especially on Our House and Everybody I Love You. I wish I could have seen the reception to those and the comparisons made back when the album was released.

A cohesive, easy-going, quality rock album from the four person powerhouse. There really are no flaws within this project, and giving it anything under a 5/5 rating would feel criminal. Neil Young added an element to the group that makes them come together better, and the album is a perfect reflection of rock music from this era.

Great songs. I think I need to actually revisit CSNY

Great album

A classic

Just electric on all accounts. And I say that as a buzz word - not as literal as you might think. Hard to find a bad thing to say about this album. Believe it or not - our house wouldn't even be in the top 3 for me on this record. Carry on, almost cut my hair, Helpless, Woodstock....i mean the list just goes on and on with banger after banger. Deja Vu of course. I remember sitting in my apartment in my mid 20's(i'm 33 now) and spinning this in the background. And my buddy's girlfriend, now wife, who just moved in commented how drab this was. I paused the video game i was playing and explained the magic that was Deja Vu. She never got it...It's ok. I won't hold it against her. She's still cool. Neil Young added so much to this group - but i think the amazing thing about CSN&Y(even without Y)....just the absolute musicianship across the board. Everybody had stellar solo careers. Every combination of this group is just killer no matter what way you cut it.

One of my favorites. Such a great album. 5 stars.

moy moy moy moy moy moy moy bueno

A lot of tracks on this one that I now well but I'd never listened to this album in its entirety prior. Likely CSNY's best work.

Of course as the famous story goes this was originally supposed to be Crosby, Stills, Nash & Chutney but Neil Young kicked up such a fuss! He was a right baby about it. Ken Chutney didn’t need to be in the band, his duo with Len Houmous was already world famous so he gracefully stepped aside. 4.5

This album is really good, the harmonies and rhythm are such a deep part of the era. I listened to it as I helped people board a tender to go to the ship, and it made time fly.

I do truly love Our House and Teach My Children, but I’d love to hear this with those songs out and some extra edgier Young and/or Stills tracks instead. It’s apparently as much of a “group” album as The White Album was for The Beatles, which is a bit unfortunate. Stills is an underrated guitarist and songwriter. Graham Nash wrote OH and TMC, so maybe he shouldn’t be on this album at all, except for those sumptuous 3 or 4 part harmonies — OK, he gets to stay. The title track, Carry On, and Neil’s two songs are all great. I remember from a book of Rolling Stone Record Reviews from August of 1971 there was a small section called “The Review as Fiction”, and the only one that stuck with me was for this album. The gist of the fictional story was that a bunch of hippies in 1970 would make plans for bombs and talk about revolution, but mostly they just hung around and got high and were waiting for the Deja Vu album to be released. Then a new guy called them out on their bullshit saying they needed to get rid of all their music and dope distractions and really commit to the revolution and all the friends took it to heart and got rid of their music and their dope. But on the day the album came out, the chastised ex-revolutionaries heard music coming from down the hall, and when they got to the room, it was the guy who had called them out, and he was sitting on the floor with a giant joint in his hand, completely spaced out and completely grooving to the Deja Vu album, becoming just like those he had called out earlier. I’m not sure if the fictional story was meant to be in praise of the album or critical of the album (probably the latter) but it was a decent story. I still have the book of course, and reread the story today. Anyhoo, still a solid 5 for me. A staple of card playing days in high school.

The best CSN(Y) lineup, Deja Vu is the apotheosis of the country blues rock movement. One the one hand it reaches back into 1960s country infused rock (being a supergroup of 60's country rock bands) and on the other hand, looks forward to the 70's, especially Southern Rock and California-style country rock. Three things makes this album one of the best albums of all time: exquisite songwriting, Stephen Stills amazing guitar skills, and the lush harmonies of all four vocalists. These elements combine to create sweet songs (Teach Your Children, Our House), sad and plaintative (Helpless), and powerful (Carry On, Woodstock). Very few albums still get airplay after 55 years, but this one does. There is a reason for that.

A longtime favorite

A soundtrack to my youth

One of my favourite albums! :)

Crosby, Stills & Nash are their own solar system… and Neill is a supernova capable of outshining the entire galaxy.

Really good songwriting and mixing, especially guitar-wise. Enjoyed it thoroughly. 8.5/10

Now THIS is a great album.

This is one of my favorites.

This is such a solid folk album with some of their best hits! I feel like I’ve listened to all of these songs individually but never as a collective. I’m definitely going to add this album to my rotation! I throughly enjoyed this album and would recommend it to others!

Favorite tracks: Carry On Almost Cut My Hair Woodstock Deja Vu Our House

Full of classics

I was raised on this album, it’s very near and dear to me. Personal bias aside, I really do think this is one of the greatest albums ever made. Not a bad track on the album. The harmonies are top tier. I’ve always felt that Greg Reeves and Dallas Taylor do an amazing job backing CSNY on this album. It’s just so damn good.

Long been one of my favorite albums.

Packed with classics and fantastic voices.

Legendary

A classic

This album has tons of great songs.

Stunning album! Interesting to learn it was created in a Rumours-style situation where everybody hated each other. Beauty created from hate and anger apparently.

Top drawer

Wow. Stunning. Can't believe I've never listened to this.

This is a masterpiece.

So many good songs, carry on, teach your children, helpless, woodstock, our house. Love crosby stills and nash and love the addition of Neil Young. big fan!

This is a fantastic album. CSNY is so iconic for the harmonization, but these guys could really play and shred in some of the harder stuff.

Yeah, really liking this - was thinking 4.5 but immediately wanted a third playthrough, so let's round up. I guess it's an accident of personal history that I didn't get into these guys decades ago? I've liked Neil Young for ages - same with The Beach Boys' close harmonies - so if I'd been exposed to some CSN or CSNY I woulda yummed it up. Oh well. The opening of "Woodstock" sounds a whole lot like the opening of Metallica's "Ronnie" to me. Or rather, vice versa. Also, fun to hear the origin of "Our House" which I've encountered in soundtracks a lot. Ah, and "Almost Cut My Hair" is what popularized the phrase "Let your freak flag fly", though it seems it originated with Hendrix... Fave tracks - as well as those already mention, "Carry On", and the title track.

Not a single bad song on this album, if you like this sort of stuff and I do. CSNY sure had the harmonies and melodies that defined the peak 70’s folk rock genre. Let’s not forget that pedal steel and other guitar pieces that musta made for one hell of a good show back in the day!

Absolutely iconic. Fond memories of this as a kid, too.

Pleasant album! Great instrumentals and vocal work. 'Teach Your Children' was my fave.

A really solid album. "Our house" will always remain a favorite in my heart

Real mixed feelings on this one for me. You know when you first see the album art you get that unconscious reaction: half of me was “oh nice!” but a big part of me thought, “Ugh, will I have to listen to this on YouTube?” Thankfully it is on Spotify, but it’s another example enjoyment tinged with annoyance. I love a couple of these tracks - Teach your Children and Helpless can reduce me to tears if I’m in a particular headspace, but a lot of the other songs still fail to make any impression on me. I recognise that this is a SuperGroup and a super album, but my main problem with this list is the amount of off shoots from this project that got included on the list. It’s 5 star, but it’s a weird 5 stars. I wish I’d have got this one over a weekend.

This is an all time classic record. Every track has merit.

Eén van m'n favoriete albums of all time. Zo fucking goed. Top rock nummers, gemengd met folk en blues. Dit heeft alles. Dit is een album dit ik 5x na elkaar kan beluisteren zonder maar één keer iets te moeten skippen. 5.0

A stellar first outing from CSNY

Great!

I just received a Neil Young album yesterday, and today we have CSN & Young... I'm keeping an eye on that premeditated script, huh, 1001albunsgenerator! But I'm not complaining, quite the opposite. I've been completely immersed in Neil Young's work, and all his projects, like his contribution to Crosby, Stills & Nash. Here he leaves us with at least two wonderful songs in his voice: Helpless and Country Girl. Speaking of the album as a whole, few times in history do you get the opportunity to listen to an album as perfect as this one. All 10 tracks are absolute hits. There are songs that hit the soul hard like "Almost Cut My Hair" and "4 + 20" and there are songs that are impossible not to shake your bones like "Woodstock" and "Everybody I Love You" One of the easiest 5 stars I've ever given!

Over half of the songs on this album still hit when they're not hitting hard and the harmonies are outstanding. An excellent album!

I've listened to this album for many decades. It still shows me new twists, and the nostalgia is just as poignant. One of the best ever. 5/5

PERFECT FUCKING ALBUM

Improves upon the CSN debut in nearly every way, and the addition of Neil Young is inspired, and "Our House" never fails to make me tear up

Superb. Amazing harmonies, memorable songs, good lyrics, great musicianship. Side one is particularly strong but there is not a single filler on this album. Personal highlight is Woodstock which is so much better than the Matthews Southern Comfort version

Deja Vu is the second album album from Crosby, Stills & Nash, and their first as a quartet, with Neil Young. C,S&N was regarded as a "supergroup;" the addition of a their fourth made term seem not quite strong enough. This album was the most successful album of the group's career long, storied career. C,S,N&Y used layered harmonies as well as any group in popular music, with a mixture of guitar elements from folk and rock. The group's greatest strength is in their songwriting, with all members contributing to this incredible collection of songs.

Another one of those albums that you forgot just how good it is until you put it on again and think, ah yes now I remember why I bought it! Beautiful harmonies, great melodies and some fab guitar to boot. Absolute peach of a record.

Echt genoten. 4,8/5

Classic album, great tracks. I love 4 + 20 and I almost cut my hair.

Cool cover. Great album. Didn’t realize I knew so many songs. A very fine album for fine folks.

So much talent on one album. Loved nearly every track.

Some day, if you find yourself with a newborn baby who you spend hours lulling to sleep, you choose "Our House" to sing to them. This song became my go-to lullaby every night for ~6 years and still hits for me. "Life used to be so hard, now everything is easy cause of you" became a reverse psychology mantra that helped me get through the rough infant years. Rewind by many years to a my teenaged youth, and I had Helpless on repeat, to process the incomprehensible angst I suddenly felt. These songs are timeless and gorgeous and poignant. Deja Vu is my 2nd favorite to So Far (mainly because of Helplessly Hoping) but it's a classic.

Teachers your children well and make them listen to this album

I remember I bought this album for the cover - so cool - and then grew into the songs afterwards. But Neil Young makes it, really, cos in retrospect, without his reedy voice shining through, they’re just a nice country rock band. ‘Helpless’ is timeless but I found ‘Country Girl’ meant the most to me, 46 years on from that first listen. Listening laced with nostalgia from my youth.

The Office forever ruined 'Teach Your Children' for me. Good thing there's always 'Our House' and the rest of this terrific record.

Adding Neil Young to this trio is just showing off.

i liked it a lot. easy to listen to.

Love anything Neil touches.

Nice, looking forward to hearing After the Gold Rush

this was probably the introduction to folk rock music in my life. My dad used to play this on his turntable when I was a kid and I hated it then, but man do I ever love it today. The harmonies alone are fantastic. It really doesnt even seem like its that long, either. There's plenty there, but I was enjoying it so much that before I knew it, it was done. These guys really made something great.

Great harmonies, great songwriting, just a great album overall. Folk music zenith

Just an astounding well composed album with a very silly and pedantic band name.

Legendary songs, legendary album 🔥

Excellent

Graham Nash always said that rock and roll can change the world. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Growing up hearing these harmonies in my house, on an old console TV stereo. There have never been four voices come together and mesh as one like CSNY. I needed this album to remember that no matter how hard life can become, you can always feel strength and hope through song. RIP David and Merry Christmas.

Simply a classic ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just so good. Absolute peak ensemble folk rock. Beautiful harmonies and just such a luscious, pastoral, autumn-like tone throughout. An album made for a cozy, chilly day in. This might be the best supergroup album of all time. Even though the word behind-the-scenes was that the egos could barely be contained, the conflict led to one cohesive sounding gem. This is a must listen and belongs on the list. 4.7/5

Very top of the game here, and a stunning collection of beautiful songs and misfit men. God Bless CSNY!

Hell of a way to introduce a supergroup, at least. Solid 5 Stars.

I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump up to a 5. I don’t have that much to wax poetic about, honestly – this is just really good music, that finds itself right between the crossroads of late 60s folk/Americana & 70s dad rock, and somehow finds a really nice blend of the two that evokes the best of both, with a pretty strong variety of subjects & soundscapes to keep it all a pretty breezy, enjoyable and coherent 37 minutes. A few songs are a little stale at points (namely “Helpless” choosing to reprise most of the track), but it never lingers long enough to cause any issues with the album itself. I guess the main reason I’m at a 4.5 is just because Neil Young’s solo (or at least, what feels like solo) tracks on this album feel really detached from Crosby, Stills & Nash – they’re not bad at all, and they’re a great showcase of his own talent, but they make the album feel just a little disconnected. There’s also a few tracks that feel a little too open lyrically, in a way that leaves them slightly too broad for my tastes. Still though, what’s here is too good to not bump up to a 5; the guitar riffs are on point, the vocal harmonies sound spectacular, and if nothing else, the feelings this album evokes from its instrumentals just have a timeless vibe. I really liked it, and I have zero shame in bumping it up to a 5. Pretty strong pick for my first CSNY album.

Pinnacle of country

Personal Top 10 album

Great songs contributed by all four. Too bad they couldn’t stay together (consistently) over a longer period. I think Carry On is very under appreciated. Helpless is another highlight for me, but the whole thing is great.

Awesome album which feels like a playlist given all the different singers. Each member of this supergroup contributes great songs to this album. I wish it were longer and that CSNY were able to make more music together during this time. My favorites are "Almost Cut My Hair", which is exciting each time I hear it and "Helpless", which contains one of Neil Young's strongest melodies in my opinion. Plus the Jerry solo on "Teach Your Children" is always fun!

Undisputed classic. Teach your children about it

Doesn’t get much better than this classic.

A perfect album. I almost exclusively listened to this album one summer in Ithaca and every time a song plays- it makes me smile.

Best ever

4.7 - This was just lovely and some absolute bangers. I almost cut my hair has always been a fave.

This is a good 'un. Carry On, obviously. But the rest of the track list is very solid, with different tracks highlighting different members songwriting and vocal chops. Fave Tracks: Carry On, Almost Cut My Hair, Helpless, Our House, Country Girl 4.5/5

Great.

Great album

The best harmonies ever

The soundtrack of my family vacations

soft folk rock, brilliantly written and played. i feel like i've often repeating myself at this rate but there's just something about this period of rock music that is incredibly unheard in the mainstream nowadays. collaborating with neil young only makes it shine more. songs of love, peace, and personal reflection are featured throughout here. the meaningful lyrics paired with one-of-a-kind harmonies... it's just fantastic.

Hep yeah. Was actually just thinking the other day about how good a song Woodstock is

Another easy 5

The song Woodstock is the song of the generation. Brilliant writing by Joni and CSNY made it come alive

It is genuinely impressive that the writing credits for this album are so evenly spread between the four members of the supergroup and that the musical style maintains consistency so well. You can clearly tell who is writing what song, and it's not that any of the writers here are better than the others (although I have a soft spot for Crosby), but that their musical styles are different. Even though they all shine on their own, when these guys come together their harmonies are phenomenal. Not just in the sense that their voices work well together, musically these guys blend into something that is more than the sum of its parts. This album gets better and better with each listen and I can't say there are any weak tracks. Highlights: Almost Cut My Hair, Deja Vu, Our House, 4+20, Country Girl

As good as it gets for CSNY

Such a great album. Great harmonies. Brings back great memories

AMAZING album. Just great. Almost cut my hair especially is such a banger.

Classic.

Splendid harmony singing, stellar song writing. This album is a timeless classic.

Everyone should have listened to this album at least 20 times in their lifetime.

Before I received this album as one to listen to it is always on my own personal favorite album of all time list. It ia a fantastic album from one of the greatest groups of all time.

One of my favorite albums of all time. First time listen was on vinyl during covid zooted alone in my room. Almost Cut My Hair is a spiritual song for me

Can’t go wrong with CSNY. Solid album.

This is close to peak folk rock... I love this.

Overall: 9/10 This is my first time listening to a full album featuring any of the members of this band and that's honestly kind of embarrassing. I'm glad to start closing this horrific gap in my music listening. In terms of this album, it's a country/folk/rock album that I absolutely adore. The harmonies are shockingly gorgeous and I love that Neil gets to shine the most on this album because he has the most unique voice of the four members. I've seen some people don't enjoy Neil's voice and I'm not sure why I do but he's one of the few whiney singers that isn't grating to the ears. The instrumentation is also diverse enough to keep the album interesting throughout. Can't wait to hear so many more albums from all of these guys. Fav Song: Woodstock Least Fav Song: 4 + 20

Familiar songs.

Masterpiece!

Fav songs: Deja Vu - absolutely beautiful piece of music. Mind blowingly good stuff.

Wait this is actually sick?! Carry On (the beat change is actually nuts) Teach Your Children Helpless (this one is weird in that there are parts I don't like but the harmonies are GROGEOUS) Woodstock Deja Vu !!!!!!!!!! The beginning of this song is just ridiculous and im really upset is slows down. Our House 4 + 20 (jesus this song is sad but gorgeous I almost don't want to add it because of how sad it make me feel ggs) Country Girl Everybody I Love You This album was ridiculous, genuinely enjoyed this front to back. This album embodies everything I enjoy about Creedence Clearwater and I was smiling ear to ear (except for that 1 sad song) GGs boys EXACTLY the type of thing I wanted from this challenge

Never listened to this album, but I knew the first five songs so far. On track 7(our house) and I know this whole record so far. This blows my mind. No wonder CSNY has always been talked about so highly. This is an albums worth of hits. First track I didn’t know was “4+20”. Great song. Now I’m on “country girl”. This one I don’t know either, and the first song where I’m not “wow”. So country girl starts slow and builds to a great song. Great album

Woodstock to the heart, but got love for all Lie and die in the fire, where I learned to ball Our House is the place where I lay my dome On the streets of the San Francisco where my Country Girl roam

Well written, well sequenced; all their strengths distilled into their most potent. These 4 were combustible combination, but held it together for a great album. One of my favorites.

Really like this, so many classics. The different songwriter concept has so much benefit to the bands that know how to implement it correctly.

Really enjoyed this, reminded me of a Fleetwood Mac album in some ways so it makes for easy listening. Probably will listen again :)

Loved it!

This is a truly excellent album. Our House is, obviously, a classic. 4+20 is great too. Well-honed, each song changing things up just a little to keep you on your toes. Atmospheric - would be good with eyes closed and headphones in.

Almost cut my hair!

So so good.

Ridiculously good — every song.

Peak CSN&Y which is good enough for me.

This is a great sounding album and the title track is timeless. There's a warmth and complexity to CSNY that is missing from a lot of music. Helpless is so clearly Young doing what he does best. Not everything on this one is equally good but you can see why these four were a huge influence, especially Young who is clearly the standout.

This album feels like the production/mixing level is a grand canyon apart from a lot of other albums on this list especially modern overcompressed stuff. Even if a song or two didn't hit me right away I was listening because the mixing is so good. I think Helpless is my favorite track. This album makes me want to understand why it sounds so good. Even if you don't like the music it should make you wonder why so many albums even on this list don't sound this good.

Great album! Really liked the chill vibes of each song.

Didn’t get all the way through it but have listened to it many times before - awesome album, huge diversity in music but all great performances

What a familiar sound, even though I had not really listened to a lot of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young so far. Has this 70s feel (obviously) which I absolutely adore. The vocals in some songs were a highlight for me - layered vocals are a soft spot of mine. Some songs reminded me of super early Queen a bit, Queen I and Queen II, two of my favourite albums of all time. Others gave Simon and Garfunkel vibes, while some others had this distinctive Beatles sound. Overall, I knew since the very first song that this album was going to be a solid 5/5. Marvellous.

A classic - surely everyone loves CSN&Y

At a time when rock bands seemed to name themselves like law firms, CSN added a new partner in Neil Young. His arrival brought another dimension to the band’s already stellar songwriting and live performances, though it came with Young's famed unpredictability and headstrong attitude. Having already watched Young dismantle Buffalo Springfield, Stephen Stills should have known better—but Young’s musical chops clearly outweighed the risks. Given the towering egos, volatile relationships, and an infamously scattered recording process, it’s a miracle Déjà Vu was recorded at all—and even more remarkable how accomplished it sounds. The album flows seamlessly, with songwriting and singing duties shared almost equally (Stills x3, Crosby x2, Nash x2, Young x2, plus one cover). Stills brought technical precision and rock sensibilities, Crosby offered dreamy, freeform experimentation, Nash delivered polished, melodic pop, and Young added raw emotion and introspective grit. Together, they pushed each other to raise their game, allowing every member’s strengths to shine. Déjà Vu contains some of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's most accomplished and memorable songs as a band and as individuals—no small feat, given the stellar careers each of them had. Did/Do I own this release? No, but I should Does this release belong on the list? Yes Would this release make my personal list? Yes Will I be listening to it again? Yes

One of my favorite albums of all time. I love the harmonies, I love the songwriting, I love the songs on here.

Classic album, great songs and vocals

Always love Neil Young. Helpless is great along with many other tracks on this album.

4.6 One of the best folk rock albums of the 70s. Love how their voices harmonize together.

All I can say is this album is a master class in "Harmonies!!!" So good. If your into harmonies an musicianship, this your bag. Enjoy and say thank you.

A fantastic moment in time. Every song is a piece of art.

Exactly what we should get from a supergroup: brilliant lyrics, harmony, and playing.

This was one of those albums that I thought I would know a few songs from going in, and it turned out I knew basically every song on the album. It turns out I unknowingly grew up on this album, as my family plays songs from it constantly. It’s just a delight to listen through. The harmonies are immediately identifiable and unique to this band. The overall sound is folky, but still has a rock edge to it at times (especially the guitar parts). Just a great record

Classic album. Every song is good and most are better. Even Our House, which I've always felt was too saccharine, was a major hit. It speaks to the variety on this album. It points the way from 60's folk rock to more complex and edgier (thanks to Neil) rock of the 70's. Several songs like the title track are really interesting with the changes they manage in a 4 minute song like mini movements. The variety of the album could make it seem a bit disjointed to some; the Young tracks particularly stick out. Despite the love focused themes of most of the songs, you can still hear the countercultural metaphors imbedded. Its a fantastic, enjoyable, mostly timeless album.

11 stars out of 5. One of the greats.

Great Album.

There's a bit of filler, but the sheer amount of great tracks this record has more than makes up for that. Fantastic song-writing and superstar talent make this an excellent album.

Too many memorable songs not to be 5 stars or A- for me.

An iconic album for all time

Incredible! More than half of the album could be considered a greatest hits for them.

Always been sort of indifferent to them but this was good

Déjà Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is a stunning album that beautifully showcases their signature harmonies. The album exudes warmth and tenderness, creating a deeply immersive listening experience. Each track is infused with a rich, melodic quality that highlights the intricate vocal arrangements of the band. The lyrics explore themes of love, introspection, and social change, adding emotional depth to the music. The seamless blend of folk and rock elements offers a timeless quality that resonates throughout. Overall, Déjà Vu is a powerful testament to the band's ability to craft emotionally resonant and sonically rich music. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 8 STAND OUT TRACK - Helpless

Folk rock was in its heyday and this album was one of the best of the era.

Excellent album start to finish

Just one of the best. You have to be a fan of the style and harmonization but it's so good if you are. Deserving of 5 stars. 9/10 (4.5/5)

Excellent. Listened three times in a row Update. And it’s growing on me. Listened 4 more times

One of my favorite vinyl in my collection

Shockingly good. First album I had on my first MP3 player, have not come back for a full relisten in a while, and it’s better than I remember.

Fantastic album that still reveals the optimistic side of the 60s and hope for a better future, before the cynicism of the 70s set in. Intelligent lyrics, harmony, and some nice electric flourishes throughout. The biggest problem on the album is the jarring movement from the opening song, Carry On, to the second track, which is full on country. In fact, the album does have a little bit of unevenness that way, but the highs are so high. It’s still rounds up to a five star rating.

Side one is perfect. Unskippable. Side two is only great in comparison. I get why some people would find it dated but I think this is the strongest CS&N were with Young only getting better.

I can’t believe how many classics are on this album. The addition of Neil young gave CSN the edge they needed (for my taste). Just When they are at their most hippie (teach your children) they follow it up w a soulful rocker like almost cut my hair. Woodstock and helpless are my favorites, but this has more classics per album than almost any other american album of this genre

Nice. solid album

Great album! Nearly a perfect encapsulation of that era and sound. 4.5/5

One of the only albums I've immediately hit replay on.

Favorite Track: Woodstock

Wow, what a great Album with so many different tracks…9/10

Great album

This album is five stars, their rendition of Joni’s Woodstock is so fun!

Dang, I forgot how bad almost cut my hair is and how amazing Helpless is. Neil young was 25 on this album 🤣 amazing

Top to bottom, a great album.

Wonderful album from front to back. Not a dud in the bunch. Harmonies are amazing. Rockers are good and the ballads are just as good.

Best album of all time period

They are definitely more than the sum of their parts. Great songwriting, excellent production, and masterful harmonizing.

Excellent album.

Classic...in the best sense of the word.

5 star folk rock Favorite track: Carry on other picks: Dejavu, Woodstock, Country Girl, Almost cut my hair

Absolutely love this album. For me this is definitely the best ‘super-group’ album ever. I don’t really recall why/where I first listened, but I remember being immediately blown away by the harmonies. And there can’t be many bands to match that aspect. But generally it’s just 4 song writers at their peak, and every song is a winner (Woodstock and Country Girl absolute highlights, albeit Our House is possibly a bit saccharine for me). Yeah it can feel a bit uncoordinated, as the Neil Young led numbers do seem a bit at odds to the others. But the CSN harmonies applied to Young’s songs really lift them and vice versa there’s some ripping Young guitar work/solos on some of the CSN led ones. But I think that’s the benefit, the addition of Young to CSN breaks up a harmony led folk rock that struggles to carry an album on its own (or at least not to score it a 5). So even though it’s actually quite a dark album, it just always lifts me whenever I listen to it. Perfect for a summers day drive (well, for me it is).

Well well well, oh to be in Laurel Canyon in 69. I am a big fan of CSN and Y and what a carry on. Some of it sounds a little twee but the highs outweigh any of that. I would listen to Neil Young all day long if I could and Crosby is a true nutter. Put it on sunny day and zone out....

EXTREMELY good album. Sounds immaculate. Not much to say. Their voices, blended, sound pulled from the beginning of time, as if they’ve always been there. Intoxicating harmonies and group lock. Incredible songs. Neil Young is so precious, you just want to give him a big hug. One of the greatest! 5/5

💙💙💙

Classic incredible need it on vinyl

Way better than I would have expected. A good mix of genres and some great harmonies and guitar work

This is basically a greatest hits album by four songwriters who were at the top of their game when working together...which they rarely did because they were four songwriters who were at the top of their game and didn't need anyone else. "Almost Cut My Hair" is an absolute jam and gets stuck in my way too often. I'm not a fan of the solo music by any of these artists, outside of Neil Young, but this is a masterpiece. It's not the boring folk rock the first CSN album was and this is a must-listen. On other CSNY albums it seemed like some songs were written just so they could harmonize, but that's not the case on this one. Great album and highly recommend giving it a listen.

Hell yeHa

CSN is already a songwriting harmony factory, but throwing Y in the mix, however brief, is pure folk legend and magic.

Oh crap, my saved review didn't save. Pooh. This was one of the soundtracks to a place and time and my life and I wore out the record. I loved it then and still love it, but I don't listen to it anymore as my tastes have changed. 5 stars!

A classic and a favorite

LOVE this album. College days.

Fabulous turn of the decade folk-rock

When this was first released I was never interested in the album or in all honesty gave it a listen. I was aware of one or two or the single releases but nothing more. As the time of release was at the height of some of the best Prog Rock albums ever to be released my musical interest and buying power was firmly elsewhere. I liked the single Woodstock and as it was the theme tune to something that was great (and so thankful and privileged that i lived through that time) I would nod my head in acceptance that CSN&Y were a big part of the Woodstock generation. But at that time I was more interested in King Crimson, Yes and Genesis and in any case I much preferred the Joni Mitchell version of Woodstock. And so it remained that CSN&Y remained at the edge of my musical consciousness. Skip forward 50 years and something happened that I struggle to put my finger on. Maybe it was a documentary about Laurel Canyon or one about David Crosby in his later years or an interview I heard by chance on BBC Radio 5 with Graham Nash. Could even be that my next day neighbour was always waxing on lyrical about them but something made me explore the music of CSN&Y more and I became hooked. I love the first album better than this but there is only a cig paper width between both. It is an absolute pleasure to listen from start to finish and maybe its because I am catching up on the lost years CSN&Y were not in my life, I cannot now imagine life without regularly listening. Never bought the original album but now proud owner of the CD and one of 20,000 lucky souls owning the Deja Vu Alternates album released a few years ago on Record Store Day. A record which sits proudly at the front of my collection. If you’d told me this 50 years ago.. A firm 5/5. 5/5 31/5/24

Wow. The first album in over 200 that goes straight to 5 star and am ordering on vinyl having not been familiar with it before. This stands out to me because it manages to offer variety that never loses it's quality. Some albums are very good but have one note, this seemed like a rainbow where the 4 members of the supergroup all contribute something different but equally brilliant. Almost cut my hair has one of the best guitar sounds I've ever heard, our house is beautiful as is teach your children. An absolute classic.

Personal biases not aside, this album is great. I love folk rock. 'Almost Cut my hair' 'Woodstock' 'Our house' and 'Country girl' are my favorite tracks. I could listen to it more times and give a more thorough dissection but I don't feel I need to. I'm comfortable giving it 5 stars as is.

Primo! This is my music.

Always forget how good CSNY were, so much talent packed into one group. Teach Your Children and Our House are classics of the flower child era, as is Woodstock. The songs in between are so good. The Stephen Stills opener Carry On, Young’s slow and sweet Helpless, Crosby’s defiant Almost Cut My Hair. The climactic Country Girl rounds it all out. Beautiful and powerful album.

A crackerjack album! I accidentally listened to a 4 CD re-release and dug every moment of it. I felt like Our House and Woodstock were the weakest, I think because I just prefer other artist's take on them, but having never listened to this album, nor heard most of the tracks, the genre range and writing quality (and recording quality) kind of blew me away.

The songwriting here is just stellar. Each of these artists writing and performing together makes for some of the best folk rock ever. The mixing and performances are all great and bring a lot of heart to each song. My favorites were Woodstock, Almost Cut My Hair, and Our House

Simply a very well crafted album. Excellent songwriting, good instrumental performances especially the guitars, and solid vocals and harmonies. This seems to bridge that gap between the folk rock of the 60’s and what would become the rock scene in the 70’s. I wonder if any of these guys ever did anything else?

Loved it, will return often to this one

I have a bias here because "Our House" is the song my wife and I danced to at our wedding, but it's still a very good album!

What an album.. every song is awesome..a masterpiece by csny

I really enjoyed this so much. It's a definite step up from the (still very good) CSN album from the year before. Young just brings so much soul and emotion through his voice, and a hint of more of a rock sensibility. It creeps into the five star category for never really having a lull or a dip in its entire run.

Another album that has the classic 70s sound.

One of the best albums ever. When the "worst" song is an A- Neil Young song, you know it's something that will be discussed for decades.

Something for everyone. Harmony city. Loved the smooth guitar and comforting lyrics especially the songs I remember from my childhood. 👍

Yeah hard to go wrong this album. Neil's joining took this band even higher especially with Helpless as one of his contributions. Plus you have Jerry Garcia playing pedal steel guitar on Teach! Really captured the sound of that era.

Exceptional album that showcases how great this mix of artists is/was. Songwriting, harmonies, guitar and music: it’s one of those rare moments captured on an album that is something special.

This record was played a lot when I was in high school. Not sure why. The harmonies are great. Seems like everyone was at the top of their game. I'd put this on again.

It’s hard to beat this album in the singer/songwriter category, especially since you have 4 singer/songwriters working (kinda) together. Great songs with great harmonies. And don’t sleep on the guitars in this album, they’re really good, too. Great pick

It’s a total classic!

A classic in my eyes. It got everything that was relevant in the 60s and transferred it to the 70s.

Lovely Album, just great listening!

Iconic

Classic album with many good songs by a true supergroup that came together organically…not contrived by some record company deal. Beautiful.

Classic for a reason

A life-long favourite. Great harmonies, guitar work etc. Makes me sad, though, to see David Crosby on the screen while listening

Fantastic album, a few familiar songs. Really enjoyed this one.

Folk rock. An album filled to the brim with masterpieces that have truly stood the test of time. Folk rock is such a fickle genre, sometimes it doesn't age well. Deja Vu is one of those albums that was so masterfully put together that it will never grow old. It's full of, naturally, amazing guitar work and beautiful vocals and harmonies. I do wish the bass had a bit more presence but it serves its purpose. The album had great mixing and production, just an overall masterclass in songwriting. More can definitely be said but after only one listen it's hard to go into great detail. I typically get tired through folk rock albums, for some reason they don't always keep me engaged. But Deja Vu was a different breed, not once was I tired of what I was hearing. Will have to revisit and listen to other releases. 4.5/5

One of the best albums of the era, favorite in my house growing up

One of my all time favorites. This was the soundtrack to my high school days. Still own the vinyl from back then.

Beautiful harmonies between the singers, acoustic instrumentation, and an atmosphere from the 60s. This is a great one

great album, enjoyed every song I think. Quite a few that I knew already and really like

maybe my favorite album on the list thus far

Really liked this album.

I know most of these songs well. All so good, even the ones I hadn't heard before. Hard to believe that so many hits were on one album. So folksy, rocking, just great to listen to. Five stars.

Harmonies are amazing. Great songs on this one, almost all are hits.

Perfect inflection point between 60’s folk/rock and what was to come in the early 70’s for rock. Everybody was for a moment in that band totally together and making a near perfect album.

this has great mix of folk, rock, folk rock (duh) and hard rock. its has the beautiful and polished helpless and the dirty bluesy almost cut my hair. all that makes to a excellent album. my newest discovery, neil young, makes a little appearance on some songs here, bursting out his rapid vicious pentatonic guitar licks and singing like an angel dressed as a farmer.

After the Gold Rush verscheen in hetzelfde jaar als Deja Vu, de beste man was in topvorm. De totale lengte van de plaat is eigenlijk te kort. Zeker omdat Woodstock niet op Spotify staat. Dat is jammer. Maar ik ben al jaren van fan van deze plaat, en na vandaag is dat niet minder geworden. 9,5/10 Highlights Almost Cut My Hair Our House Helpless

Best song - Teach Your Children

One of the best. I wore it out back in the day. Would still play it and love it!

Our house is a very, very, very fine house With two cats in the yard Life used to be so hard Now everything is easy 'cause of you 5.5

This was the very first album I ever bought. (Yes, I'm *that* old.) The music is timeless, and the message is more relevant than ever.

The already-acclaimed CSN welcome the incredibly gifted Neil Young: two great tastes that taste great together. Firing on all cylinders.

I liked the harmonies and the chilled out country twang.

From their debut album, they’ve added both an additional member (Neil Young) and an additional star. 5/5

LOVED!

I wouldn't call myself a CSN&Y fan, but I really enjoyed this album and can see why they were such a big deal at the time

One of the best albums of the 70s. The harmonies are incredible.

Music that spoke for the movement

one of the best folk American albums ever. great start to this process

Perfect.

One of the best albums ever

I LOVE CSNY. our house❤️

Reminds me of elementary school and getting picked up by my mom.

Have always loved this one.

Half way through and man this album is such a banger. I don't think I have ever listened to it straight through. David Crosby singing Almost Cut My Hair is sick. Helpless is such a great song. Pretty damn powerful and I kind of needed it today. Neil Young has one of those voices I can listen to anytime. Our house is a jam. Knew that song before listening and like it a lot. These guys just kill it on vocals and instrumental. I could listen to this album anytime.

I was already intimately familiar and this is one of the best albums of all time. The songs, the harmonies, and everything about this album is excellent. Each member's voice is unique and they all bring something different to the table, and yet the most magic is made when they harmonize. I came in knowing how good this album is and it holds up with each and every listen.

OG supergroup stuff. On their own they are heavy-hitters, on this album they come together to kill it. CPturws the sound of superstars laying down the sound of a scene and an era. Everybody brings great songwriting and style. Young only really shows up on two, but Country Girl is an epic.

This is an amazing album. I grew up with it. It's one of my favorites. The harmonies, the guitar, the complexity of some of the songs, and the simplicity of others. It's all so magical.

It's nice to have politically angry albums that sound as chilled as this. Loved it.

A pretty perfect album. Probably gonna reach for CSN or any number of NY albums before this though.

This is a phenomenal album - arguably the greatest harmony group of all time. They don't disappoint on this album the whole way through and everyone contributes to the effort with their own songs. Much has been said about this album and I can't add anything else new. Perfect. Favorite tracks: all of them!

I said in a review of Neil Young's Tonight's the Night that the Woodstock sound occupies a tragically outsized place of honor in the rock and roll zeitgeist. This album may be 50% of the reason why. Which is a reminder that it's always the music that matters, not the particular genre/sound. This album is amazing start (almost) to finish. Gorgeous melodies, performances, lyrically inspired.

I've never listened to CSNY before, although I've heard of them. Thouroughly enjoyable. Give it a go!!

Really good album and very funky. Missing like half of the song bc the co creator didnt want it 9/10. Our house is a great song.

Classic - Wonderful - Memorable

Great album!

Fantastic album. Heartfelt and entertaining songs. Love every song on the album

super easy listen, got better each time 4.5

Couldn't listen to the whole thing on Spotify, but yeah c'mon, 5/5. Amazing harmonies. Catchy. Classic.

Love this album!

Definitive era rock album with glorious vocal harmony. So many hits. Not sure why Spotify won't let me listen to half of them. the CAAARRRYYY ONNNNNNN break is magical. "Woodstock" and "Our House" are hippie bangers and "Teach your children" is just classic.

I get that some of you will dismiss this record because all the “60’s hippie” trappings that come along with it …. but ….. you just can’t fuck with the musicianship, the writing and certainly not the singing on this record. The arrangements and production are perfect. Do yourselves a favor and listen to this on a real sound system. Fuck Spotify and YouTube (good lord what are you doing?). A 5 for sure that would be a 10 if the scale went that high (11, in fact, for all the Neil haters out there).

What a sound

Love this.

This one is much, MUCH more my speed. I don't even know what to write, this album just makes me feel good. 5*

pretty good!

Classic album great music

Love this album

Our house +++++ vale da sola tutto il disco

1st Album with Neil Young

One of my all time favorites!

Youtube comments for every song Carry on/Questions: "The surgeons in the delivery room were jamming to this when my baby boy was born. I’ll never forget as Soon as they pulled him from my body the phrase 'Carry on' rang out into the room and then he let out a healthy cry. Surreal and enlightening." Teach your children: " I used to listen to this sitting on the guard bunkers in Vietnam looking out to the dark skies and wonder what this song was about. I finally get it 50 years later." Almost cut my hair: "My dad died this august...He wore his hair long in the 60s and 70s when his parents hated it, and when his older brothers were in Vietnam. He blasted this song when he felt down, as a kid it scared me. Now I crank this song up and sob. I love you dad, I miss you so much." Helpless: "I grew up in Northern Ontario. Me and my long haired friends singing our hearts out to the sky over Lake Superior. It still reduces me to tears of joy thinking about it." Woodstock: "By the time I got the courage top play this song in front of my father, I felt as if -- I were a half a million strong." Deja vu: "This is the first piece of music I ever owned, My brother bought me this cassette for Christmas when I was 12. That was 1970. Thank you.." Our House: "At 85, I think this is one of the most beautiful love songs I have ever heard, as relevant to my wife now as it was sixty years ago." 4+20: "'I embrace the many colored-beast"; how many times I've fought to come out of a bad dream thinking those words..: Country Girl: " It is both wonderful and terrible at the same time to remember those days, but the music keeps me alive. When I am long gone this album will show the future that we were lucky beyond belief to witness this." Everybody I love you: "My first travel in Greece, high school 1979, and a lot of friends then missed...that's life, but it was wonderful"

Love this album! Thanks for bringing it back to my attention.

Not a bad track here. Unparalleled harmonies. Garcia on pedal steel!

I recognized several songs from this album and most-enjoyed those I’d never heard. Almost Cut My Hair is my new ode to my husband’s mullet.

Classic. Brilliant Harmonies.

Me ha encantado es súper guay

I love this group and the songs on this album. easy win.

Great band

I love this album and am brought back to my teenage years at the sound of the first track Carry On. I enjoy and remember a lot of the lyrics. Unfortunately this album on 1001 Albums and on Spotify is missing 4 essential tracks: Helpless, Woodstock, Country Girl and Everybody I Love You. Anyone who's never heard this album is missing out if they can't hear those 4 songs. This is classic 60-70's folk/rock, singer/songwriter bands with the iconic foursome of David Crosby, Steven Still, Graham Nash and Neil Young who all went on to have successful solo careers. Fantastic album.

A true classic. ❤️

All-time favorite album. Classic tunes of the time by 4 very talented independent artists!

A classic

Impossible not to sing along with CSN’s beautiful harmonies. Lyrics that are relevant both then and now. Timeless classic.

I knew these songs individually but I'd never listened to the whole album before. What a treat!
