Finally! We didn't have Frank on here, did we? This is our first from Amy on the list, and hopefully not the last. I'm a huge fan of Amy Winehouse, what an incredible voice, and unlike someone like Adele she doesn't just make bland pop ballads with that gift, she repurposes jazz standards, puts her own spin on classic soul songs, sings "what kind of fuckery is this?" There's an unmistakeable edge to her music, and unfortunately that might be attributable to the substances. She died at 27, so a member of that tragic club of artists of immense talent that left us way too soon. Ironic that the song "Back to Black" apparently is not about heroin, but she ended up doing that later. "Rehab," by my count, is her worst song. I skip it everytime. But so many excellent gems on here. I miss her. Favorite tracks: Tears Dry On Their Own, Me & Mr. Jones, Back to Black, You Know I'm No Good, Wake Up Alone, He Can Only Hold Her. Album cover: The original British one kinda sucks, her sitting on a stool in front of a chalkboard. The American release is much more striking and memorable, for whatever my opinion is worth. 4.5/5
Autobiography in music form!!
Excellent album. I don’t care for the rehab song, but the rest is really good.
I always liked the singles from this. The hits are easy 5s, the others are a 3. Four seems fair here.
7/10 todos temones
Very well written, produced and sung album. The whole album has that 1960s wall-of-sound feeling without being a copycat of that style - it's also modern, raw and very soulful. Amy had a beautiful voice. I enjoyed this album quite a lot.
Genres: Soul, rhythm and blues, R&B, neo soul, pop Formed: 2002 Run time: 11 songs, 34 min, 46 sec The second and final studio album by the singer and songwriter. The album title hints at the “black mood” Winehouse is suffering at the time. It explores addiction and adultery and the guilt and grief that causes and the resultant heartbreak and trauma in a relationship. She was such a talented singer songwriter. The troubles in her life resulted in some iconic songs. Without the troubles, I wonder what sort of music she would be making? Even if it wasn’t as raw and edgy as what she did make, at least she’d still be here! Spotify: Least popular song: >47M Most popular song: <778M plays. I much preferred this album to “Frank”. Listen Again?: Yes My Rating: ****
The first half of this is phenomenal It just trails off a bit at the end so ends up as close to 5⭐️ as you can get whilst being a 4
not bad
Solid mid 4
Brilliant, characteristic trumpetty neo-soul from before neo-soul became sexy again. It has a lowkey twee Duffy cube to the production which is a shame but the tracks are otherwise tightly produced and the songs are magnificent. Lyrically very honest, an excellent window into that moment and noughties north London indie scene, good insight into a vulnerable, chaotic, manipulative, expressive personality. Not 100% my taste but 100% complete in and of itself.
she's hwite??? Favorite Tracks: Tears Dry On Their Own, Addicted, Rehab 4.5/5
Soulful, powerful, beautiful, and heartbreaking. RIP
first time listening have heard rehab you know i’m no good me & mr jones tears dry on their own wake up alone he can only hold her
Amy Winehouse, what could've been! It's a shame her artistry tends to be overshadowed by what happened in her personal life because this is one hell of a soulful record. It's a modern recapture of the 1960s, sung beautifully and produced really well too. Those musical touches all throughout (thanks, Mark Ronson) breathe even more life into the album. Standout tracks are You Know I'm No Good, Back to Black, and Love is a Losing Game.
Classic! Makes me want to explore more jazz
Amy Winehouse was exquisite
surprisingly enjoyed this
Yes, good, yes
I was so ready not to like this but it really kicks ass. Enjoyed it too to bottom. The Deluxe version has a bunch of ska/reggae tracks at the end! Even better
Interesting first album. Obviously heard many of these songs a ton. Really do like it but never listened straight through. Title track still stands out as best, most emotive. Deep cuts are pretty good. Tears… has a great opening verse, smooth chorus. Overall it sounds pretty plastic, overly compressed. The gimmick of Motown throwback isn’t as impressive in 2023. Deluxe version is a little less loud.
Her Voice performance on the whole album is really terrific. And Greatness of Mark Ronson's song writing really shows
Very good
Great artist and well deserved entry on this list, only personal musical taste is probably stopping me from giving this the 5 stars it deserves
This is a unique album. I´ve never been really a fan of Amy Winehouse, but I consider this album to be a real piece of music, that I would highly recomend to anyone intered not only into Amy´s career, but also into R&B. The album starts with "Rehab", which I really didn´t liked too much, but the next tracks I really enjoyed them, in fact I enjoyed the whole album, something that honestly I didn´t expect. Fav Tracks: You know I´m not good, Just Friends, Tears dry on their own, Wake up alone.
This album doesn't break new ground but honestly it doesn't have to. The arrangements on this record in combination with Amy's voice and charisma bring this to the top of its genre all by themselves. This really does not have to behind the classics of old but should be named alongside them. Standouts are definately the singles but the rest is still very good.
Really good voice. Feels like some songs are lacking in something but great album anyway
as good as everyone says
mid
I don't consider myself an Amy Winehouse fanboi, but this album is really good. I don't remember how it looked back in 2006 when this was released, but it definitely feels very fresh and stands out in today's climate, which is really cool! Very good singing, overall nice with some soul/jazz/blues.
Oh man what a start. Rehab, You know I'm no Good and Back to black. All great songs. This is a breath of fresh air for this collection of albums as it feels different and also suprisingly modern. I really like the style and the lyrics are great and personal.
Well, the only song I know from her is Rehab which feels bad since she was obviously a good singer that ended up dying early from losing her battle with addiction. This is actually really good. I am in a predicament of sorts. I enjoy this for the most part and Winehouse is good at singing, but I don't think I would put most of these songs on a playlist. A low 4/5
Incredibly iconic, Soulfully delivered
Amy is love. Beautiful voice, beautiful music.
A super popular album, from a super talented and extremely tragic singer. Very strong emphasis on style, but the songs are good enough quality to back it up and the record is short enough to not get boring. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Back To Black Date listened: 31/05/23
Tragedy. Beautiful voice sang sad songs.
Good album, easy listen for any occasion. The hits are great and deep cuts decent also
Damn that was good! Each song was a different kind of fun, modern doowop/soul and they were all great. And that genre fits Amy Winehouse's voice so well
What a voice! And what great songs!
The production and vocals are great. It was ubiquitous at the time. Some great little melodies.
Its iconic but you cant escape that the second side peters off quite a bit.
I don't have a lot to say about this album, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I feel like it does get a bit samey after a while, but the style of music on the album and her vocal performances are a breath of fresh air 4/5
I didn't realize it until just now, but I missed Amy Winehouse. Man, this first track is so much sadder now. But this album is pretty solid, through and through. I remember listening to it a lot when it first came out - this was a much fresher sound back then and was easy to replay over and over. Amy's got some distinguished pipes and these songs - ahem - slap. Nothing wrong here.
It's easy to see why this is so popular. A good voice; that classic soul sound that people seem to like; honest, personal lyrics backed up by hard-won (and ultimately tragic) experience. Back to Black, You Know I'm No Good, Tears Dry On Their Own, Rehab - they're all great songs. Personally it’s not completely ‘my jam’ and some of the album tracks seem a bit weak. But I do think it’s an important and impressive record, especially lyrically, so I’ll give it 3.5 stars, rounded up.
Like it!
This was great, love Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse sought out to realise her vision and succeeded in creating an album so accessible that both music toffs AND middle aged divorced women can enjoy it.
Lot of sadness to this for the obvious reasons, but a great album. Rehab has been overplayed but it's solid throughout. Shame she didn't get the help she needed; a huge talent.
I didn’t expect to like this!
She knew what was up.
V good
4 stars! really cool
Easily the most important blue eyed soul album of the 21st century, paved the way for artists like Adele. Rest easy Amy.
Such a banger. So many classics on this album. RIP amy
Great album, maybe a bit overplayed at release but I think with some distance it really holds up well, good stuff.
Solid album all around
Very good album
4.5
Amy Winehouse was the first celebrity death I was aware of. This album is absolutely iconic, and very very good. Fav tracks: Rehab, Me & Mr Jones, Back to Black, Least fav tracks: Addicted, Some Unholy War
I'd forgotten that she came from more of a jazz background, which is evident on the album tracks. It is a strong album. I can't listen to Rehab, but You Know I'm No Good and Back to Black make up for it. Can't believe this was 17 years ago, still sounds fresh. Only 4 stars, not sure about the album tracks, they are quite bland compared to the emotion and sadness on show elsewhere. RIP - I do wish she'd taken Rehab with her.
So many hits on this one. Interesting that it's such a fresh perspective on a seventy-ish sound.
What a great voice she had
Ah Amy, once a nearly neighbour of mine in Camden Town, how I remember your nocturnal activities and the clamour of the paps as they followed you around at 3am outside my bedroom window. Truly tragic what happened to a clearly troubled soul and you would hope not even 15 years on society would be able to help such an individual better. Anyway, the music... not my usual cup of tea but this is surely her magnus opus, Winehouse has not only found the greatest extent of her vocal abilities but has a sass and confidence to flaunt them in the best possible way. Sultry, seductive and sexy, it draws you in.
I always had thought Amy Winehouse was a tad novelty and didn't get the hype when she was alive. Then, of course after her tragic death she kind of faded from the forefront of everyone's mind - this record is a damn good one, in retrospect - without the dressing of fashion or hype.
Day 7 Well, this is awkward. In my previous review where I rated some Elvis album, I gave this list the benefit of the doubt for being made in 2005 and there not being as many resources to find music then. Now I'm getting a 2006 album. Nonetheless I'm very happy to finally get my first 2000s album. I know a few songs on this album and of course know Amy Winehouse so it should be a good listen. 8 - I'm pretty sure this is her most popular song. It's the least favorite of the three I know from her but that's not to say it's bad by any means. I don't really know how to describe it but I really like the old school jukeboxy sound from this song. 9 - Funnily enough, I heard this song when I was like 8 from a Raving Rabbids game. This song is insanely good. Her voice fits this sound so well. I also love the stuff like the saxophone (?) solo. 7 - I know there's a song called Me & Mrs Jones that I have to assume this song falls somewhere in line with but I haven't heard that song and quite frankly don't care enough to listen so I'll just be judging this based on it's own merits. I think the song is fine. It kind of sounds like an old school love ballad. I don't really think her voice works all that well on this but it isn't bad. 7 - a lot of the same feelings as the last track. She seems to have a rougher voice which can be a very good thing but I don't think it works on these slower love songs. 6 - this one wasn't interesting to me. 8 - I don't know what the difference between this song and the other love songs are but this one is doing it for me. 8 - it kind of sounds like those songs at the end of family movies which is great because I love cheesy songs like that. It's also just nice where it sounds like Amy Winehouse is having fun. 7 - it has a bittersweet sound. I like it. 6 7 5 - not feeling this one. Something about the background instruments and the lyrics and her voice aren't adding up. But you know you're doing something right when me not feeling a song is a 5. The playlist I used to listen to this album also had a overwatch video in it for some reason. 🤷♂️ Overall: This album was awesome. There's a lot of fun songs on here and while I do think there are some skips I don't think there are any genuine stinkers. 76/110 or 69% however I'm going to give it 4 stars despite the numbers not adding up like that because I can and it's my review. RIP Amy Winehouse
4.1 + A huge talent we lost far too soon. Given the bangers on this, it saddens me that Amy Winehouse's star has faded over the years. "Back To Black" channels such darkness, conveying intense emotion both in the lyric and vocals, over deathly swirls of strings. "Rehab" is a modern play on 12-bar blues, addressing drug addiction with bald-faced directness. Deeper cuts harken back to some of the best Motown joints. Also of note is "Wake Up Alone", an intricately arranged ballad with a complex chord structure that builds, unfolds and collapses into nothing (reflecting the mood of the lyrics).
Yep. Enjoyed. Artist #992 on last.fm
Strong album, although there are some songs that felt a bit like fillers.
An absolute classic :)
A great album in which Amy trades in her jazz chops for queen of soul quality stuff. No she's not Aretha, but man she's good. 4.5 stars
Wonderful soul and I think the first time I spent listening to an entire album. It's bang up work and shows what is possible in music
Amy 🖤
Still good.
how did i miss amy winehouse? embarrassed this was totally a musical blind spot to me. 2 listens through and loved the jazzy r&b with swagger and flair.
RIP to a legend
Great album. The original “Adele” voice before she made it big. Such a tragic loss at such a young age. Bought the vinyl after listening.
This album sounded fresh at the time in some way, but as with other retro-albums (think Lenny Kravitz or Fleet Foxes) I prefer to go back to the times it refers to, so in this case just to put on a Stax album. I will give it a 4 instead of the usual retro-3, as the album is so strong in many aspects.
Extraordinary vocal performance
She was awesome. Great voice, great attitude, and it comes through on just about every track.
I do like Amy, great voice and this album is a classic!
Sadly, "Back To Black" was an autobiographical call for help. And, this LP was my introduction to The Dap Tones, the Brooklyn NY neo-funk and soul band that backed Amy Winehouse on this powerhouse of a record/album. I've since latched on to nearly every Dap Tone Records artist and side project. "Back To Black" is not consistently good but, overall, it's a great, must-have album.
notes - second and last album by amy winehouse - soul/r&b album - amy was really into 60s music at the time so lots was done to recreate that sound for the album - lots of stuff recorded live off the floor to add to the vintage vibes - producer mark ronson even panned the drums all the way to one side but that was changed in the mix - beefy vinyl distortion added to the album that gives it a very specific character, kinda distracting though fav - love is a losing game - LOVE the little touches of string and vibraphone least fav - tears dry on their own - amy sounds kinda out of her element here - like shes struggling to keep up 4/5 - could see this being higher without the weird distortion
👍
Stunning. So sad she died so young. Her voice and spirit - as well as musicality - was amazing.
Good
It's a good album especially for the mid 2000s. I do feel people who rave about her never have truly listened to any female Jazz vocalist, even contemporary ones. Though It is pop music rather than Jazz and style will always stomp substance in that case.
I always get sad listening to her now. This was a monster of a record and it was everywhere at the time. There should have so much more to come.
I never really gave Winehouse a chance when she was alive. Which was my bad, she's got a great voice, and I enjoyed this album a lot.
8/10
Such a great album, beautiful voice. tragic life.
Great voice and mostly great songs.
Well overplayed now, but what an album. Her voice has an affectation, and I really hate the open track, but it's impossible for me to deny both her writing talent, her vocal strength, or what a landmark album this was. Four stars for all that.
I have, despite its massive popularity managed to somehow never listen to any of Winehouse's music. That was a huge mistake, this is excellent.
Love her sound! Classic collection of her best.
'60s pop soul married with '00s R&B. What more could one possibly ask for?
This is the perfect opportunity to finally listen to this album from Amy Winehouse. Honestly, she is the real deal, she has the pipes and the songs to make this record memorable. I wouldn't say she's a "great" singer, but combined with the terrific musical arrangements, retro sound and her powerful voice, this is the whole package. Everyone is aware of her personal issues and her tragic death and I can't help being reminded of (my last post), Janis Joplin. Both recorded only 2 proper albums and their potential for even bigger and better things was never realized. It's unfair to make the comparison musically, but this a near perfect record.
Very nice, just very good. Good. Nice. Good. Nice. 4/10
Great talent but what a waste. Single-handedly brought back that jazzy club soulful style of singing. I find Rehab to be one of the weaker tracks tbh. you Know Im No good, Back To Black and Addicted are all great great songs. Almost a 5 but not quite
Thats some good shit. It is just some trackst that took it away from a 5/5
Amazing singer.
Definite appreciation of soul is needed here. I enjoyed it a great deal. It's interesting how the album is probably as short as one of those soul albums: around 35 minutes. The bonus tracks featured are also really good, including her version of Cupid. I like her vocals, particularly. The low range really hits hard. Great stuff.
Pretty good makes me want to get up and boogie
So so good. I love this album, but am not always in the headspace for it. So 4 stars.
This album starts off brilliantly - that first five tracks is really, really good, she has a fantastic voice and the storytelling is great. But, it loses its way in the second half, there's not really a track that stands out. Definitely someone who's reputation benefited from dying young, not as good as a lot of people think but still really strong. 4/5.
Geweldig album. Niks meer niks minder
I miss Amy
Great album, some bad songs. Amazing voice.
Excellent album Back to Black had great rhythm Loved Tears Dry On Their Own & it’s inspo/ use of Ain’t No Mountain
I found this album really intriguing and I liked the fusion of genres, she also has an amazing voice and style. Would listen again, as it was solid and consistent.
7,5/10
She made history with this album. Gotta admit Amy is one of my guilty pleasure.
I'm not a huge fan of Amy Winehouse, but I have to admit this album became a classic of the genre and a part of the music history. A lot of very clever instrumental arrangements on this and Amy is a great singer. What could go wrong?
What a voice, not really my music but enjoy the jazz style drumming, and can appreciate her voice
This is a phenomenal album from a phenomenal artist. I adore the mix of the pain in the lyrics with the big upbeat rich music. Her voice is unmatched and she really found her perfect key with this album. The only small criticism I have is that all of the tracks are then pretty much in that key haha. There's not loads of variety but then it is only a small criticism because why give variety when what you've brought is absolutely incredible?? Also I met her in a pub when I lived in Kentish Town and used to see her in there regularly and she was a brilliant person.
Another Amy Winehouse album, I enjoyed this one more than 'Frank', but still it's the same vibe mostly. It's a bit more lively I guess. But overall, I'm not a huge fan of hers. Saved tracks: Back to Black, Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Love Is A Losing Game, Tears Dry On Their Own
Yeah, was alright!
I've already listened to this before, but I still really enjoy this album. Definitely one of the best R&B albums ever released.
I had some complaints about Frank, but they don't apply to this album at all. Very enjoyable, especially the vocals.
A great album, full of such life and character. Heartbreaking how it all ended for Amy.
Never listened to much Winehouse before. Great album! Really enjoyed it
Lekker album. ****
Man, she could really song. Very sad to listen t some of those songs, knowing what would happen.
Nice call with sarah, decent run, everything else fine probably
Some absolute classics. The minor songs are also still ok
Soul at its best, strong album
listened to before truly a timeless and raw soul singer
good singing but the songs were kinda samey in the first half
Better album than expected. Some really catchy songs on here, seemingly some filler too upon first listen
Amazing album, first one I got and let me say I am not at all disappointed, great start to this (Amy Winehouse over Adele 100%) Favorite track: You know I'm no good (Honorable Me and Mr. Jones) Least favorite track: Some Unholy War, None of the songs are bad, but I'd still say that's the worst, It's still a 7/10 (Imo) though, just kinda bland. The album altogether I'd say is a 4/10 (More like 4.4 but I'm just doing 4)
Really solid album! Amy Winehouse's vocals stand out so much, instantly recognisable. A lot of the same themes through this album, but some good ones in between the ones we all know. Really impressed with the production for each song, some songs are soulful, some Ska-esque, others are pure r&b I guess.
Prefs: Rehab, Me & Mr. Jones, Just Friends, Back to Black, Tears Dry on Their Own, Wake Up Alone, He Can Only Hold Her Moins pref: Love Is a Losing Game
Great album 88/100 best song: Back to black Worst song: Addicted
I definitely enjoyed this record more than "Frank". The production on this record is a lot better, with Amy's voice always at the center and in hard focus. The instruments have a bit more of a modern flair to them, while still managing to invoke the girl groups of the Motown era, mixed with the hedonistic lyrics of later rock and roll (the Stones come to mind). Favorite tracks: "You Know I'm No Good", "Back To Black", "Tears Dry On Their Own"
This makes me incredibly interested to see what the next 1000 albums are gonna be. Always had an appreciation for Winehouse, and this only gives me a greater appreciation for her. Such a soulful ass voice.
Great album, finally can appreciate this album for its great song crafting, lyrics, and singing
Yeah it's a great album, justified selection, changed the face of pop music for a good few years. Some wonderful, heart-wrenchingly open lyrics. Would never really choose to put this on because I've heard half of it more than enough times just by living life. It's genuinely good, but I'm done with Rehab, thanks. Tears Dry on Their Own has always annoyed me by not being Ain't No Mountain High Enough, you don't have to rip the whole thing and then leave us hanging, the rest of the album shows that, and all this technique does is remind me constantly of a far, far superior song. More durable however are the title track, which is easily one of the greatest songs written this century - I'll never get tired of that. Also Love is a Losing Game, another timeless Bond theme that never was. The album tracks are consistently good but nothing truly arrests me like the above. Wake Up Alone or Addicted probably best of the rest.
there are a couple of clunkers towards the end but the beginning most of the album is really good 4.5
Back to Black, Rehab and Me and Mr. Jones are bangers, overall really good album to listen to for cards, chilling and chats.
Great album and an amazing talent. Damn shame what they did to her. So much soul and emotion bottled up in this record.
Amazing era defining emotive
Really beautiful voice mixed with rock and jazz elements
I know this one and its still pretty magical. Soulful songs about bad relationships and broken hearts. Immaculate production. (From Ronson) The title track is a masterpiece. Clear 4.5
A great sound, I don’t like all the songs but the ones I do like drag it up.
Nice, can always listen to a bit of Winehouse whining on about her ex-boyfriend! Was.. Still is a fantastic album and I think she really helped usher in others like Duffy and Adele later
4.5/5. This one really caught me off guard. From the album cover, I thought this would be some not-so-great rock, but it turned out to be a really nice soul. I enjoyed this album, it's good.
Some genre busting tracks and incredible vocals. It gets a bit samey in parts, but the good points certainly outweigh the album fillers.
Not quite a 5 but pretty close
First intro to any other than rehab. Amazing old timey voice
Surprisingly a really good album. She had an amazing voice. The album has a blues feel to it yet very contemporary at the same time.
Back to Black makes a great case for short albums. If it were just the first 6 tracks, it would be a masterpiece. As it is, tracks 7-11 are a long and slow wind-down that all sound rather the same and completely lack the impact of the first half. It is a seriously front-loaded album, but that first half is so damn good.
8/10 Best song - Back to Black
Listening to the album now really changes how it sits on the palate. Many of these songs are written about the collapse of her relationship, a relationship that would later rekindle and turn into a tumultuous marriage. Songs like 'Rehab' sting a bit now given her untimely death due to alcohol use. However, this album portrays a strong, self-possessed woman who refuses to get buried in her emotions and chooses to face them head on. Her use of soul, R&B, jazz, and a little ska in the beat conjure an image of bygone glamor that highlights her big emotions, and in a way undermines the seriousness of her pain. She was insanely talented and I wish we could've heard more from her.
Quality songs, quality voice, the epitome of a tortured artist.
Kinda familiar. Happy to listen to it, but didn't blow me away. I guess that the ways in which this is very good are not the things that talk to me.
Incredibly sad to listen to posthumously, you can hear her raw emotion in every note
This is such a solid album; Amy's voice is amazing and I love all of the old-school production and instrumentation/arrangement.
This really shouldn't be something I like, but her voice is so good, and it interacts with the backing instrumentation so well. I like this quite a bit. 4/5
Not something I would typically listen to but pleasently enjoyed Back to Black. Only knew Rehab before hand which I never cared for, but did come away liking the feel of the music and the vocals from most of these songs. The title track and Tear Dries On Their Own were the standout tracks.
the mythology around this artist and this album is well documented. Tortured talented artist unable to survive her own greatness. Any way this album is a wonderful nostalgic trip to classic 60s R&B and Ms. Winehouse does it with impressive authenticity. But it doesn't to descend to nostalgia for nostalgia sake (Hello M. Buble). These songs are good and would stand out no matter the arrangements nor the aesthetic. And Winehouse delivers them with style and skill that belie her tortured personal travails. 4.5 stars
The success story of Back to Black is twofold. The first and most obvious is Amy Winehouse, who was the new soul voice in pop that had something to prove. While her debut album, Frank, was generally well-received, Winehouse was still only young. She held a lot of promise for her next album, which would be one drenched in many emotions as she struggled with her relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil. This would be an excellent followup to her debut, proving to be more mature, vulnerable, and refined sound for the still-young Winehouse. Our second star here is Mark Ronson, who is producing most tracks on this album such as "Back to Black", "You Know I'm No Good", and of course the iconic single "Rehab". Ronson had done more than a few producing jobs before this, but none had gained him as much industry recognition as this album. Ronson would net his first Grammy nomination and win thanks to this album, so he owes quite a bit to Ms. Winehouse. His production would hone in on Winehouse's old-soul vocal styles and call back to sounds similar to 1960's girl groups while polishing them up for a contemporary audience. This sort of production work inspires a sort of new nostalgia that audiences almost certainly appreciated. Back to Black would be mutually-beneficial relationship for Winehouse and Ronson as they bring the best out of each other. Sadly, this would be Winehouse's final studio album before her untimely passing in 2011. Perhaps the writing was on the wall, but her struggles with drugs, alcohol, and mental illness would culminate in a tragic end to her life. I like to think that she will be remembered fondly thanks to Back to Black, as a shining star with a golden voice. Ronson would go on to find even more success, particularly with a certain Bruno Mars, but Ronson will always have Back to Black to credit for his breakthrough as a producer. A clear classic for the 2000's.
Great album, great voice, love the music. What a sad story.
Great album
4/29/2022 Today's Album: "Back To Black" by Amy Winehouse - This is Amy Winehouse at her absolute prime and these are therefore some of her most iconic track. Rehab, Me & Mr Jones, and Back To Black are some of the most iconic R&B tracks of all time and they absolutely do not disappoint. In fact, this entire album is just great track after great track. The whole 60s style that we've heard in albums by Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald is perfectly emulated in this album and it truly sounds like a classic record despite it coming out in 2006. All of the instrumentals are really fun and unique because there are just so many layered textures surrounding the bouncy 60s tunes. The production is also super crisp and clean and the vocals have a perfect boost in the mix to give them just enough pop. The vocals are extremely impressive, but it's insane how well the band keeps up and just has an amazing sound throughout. I will say this album does trail off a little bit in the end with some less memorable tracks, but the flow of the record is not jeopardized by this fact. The cyclical idea of this album ending with Addicted and ending Rehab is a great analogy for both Amy's love life as well as her relationship with drugs and it really is a tragic reminder of how early we lost this talent. This is the best album from one of the best voices in music since the 1960s and it deserves every bit of recognition it gets. With upwards of half a billion streams on the biggest track and just around 350k on a few others, this album is obviously being celebrated by many people. So, do yourself a favor and listen to at leas the first half of this record if not the whole thing. A bunch of bubbly, creative, and amazingly performed R&B tracks await you within this fantastic track list. Highlights: Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Me & Mr Jones, Back to Black, Love Is A Losing Game, Tears Dry On Their Own, He Can Only Hold Her, Addicted Score: 7.5/10 Some of the greatest vocal performances of all time.
legendary
There’s no doubt she was a talent. I already knew most of the songs and it was good to hear them again. I can’t decide high 3* or low 4* ?
Love this album but Rehab is so overplayed
Phenomenal production, amazing voice. I love the sharp, witty writing. Her influences are very obvious without it every feeling like a cheap homage or pastiche. 4.5.
Oh Amy, we hardly knew you… Amy chose her collaborators well - Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi know how to make her voice bedazzle and the production has a fresh modern sound which also echoes the Phil Spector and Motown style. Never better than singing about heart break, Amy shows all that sadness here. It’s an album to return to (although with a few unmemorable tracks it must be said) and the listener is left to wonder… what if?
11 canciones, 35 minutos, un clásico. Igual me da pena escucharlo.
3.5/5. Not my genre, but was enjoyable anyways.
I've listened to this SO MUCH. but let's see what the songs that aren't rehab are like.
Good enough, quite pleasant. Now at least I know what Amy Winehouse sounds like. I've hear some of the tracks on this album before, but wouldn't have been able to say it's from her. 3.5 stars rounded up.
Amy Winehouse is a fine singer. Here is "Rehab", the best song in her life. Also I can listen to "Back to black", important song. "Tears dry on their own" it's another great song.
Desperately sad I don't like all the material, but the voice is incomparable.
Best tracks were banging, but some some songs were a small dip in quality, favs were rehab and back in black
IN MEMORY OF BLANQUITA
Espectacular. Disfruté cada tramo.
Such a voice, such a talent, such a waste. I wish Amy Winhouse had been able stick around for a couple of lifetimes longer to keep making albums like this.
This is a classic for me!! What a tragic and beautiful and somehow fun album
Motown throwback. Some great songs.
Nice
Toppen
Pretty good, but some of the less popular tracks i feel weren't as stellar as I feel this album's reputation has
Such an amazing voice. Cruel waste of talent.
Very good
Veldig bra
Solidan R&B klasik, RIP Ejmara
Super fun, full of soul and swagger, and surprisingly funny and sad at times. A great "throw on at any time" record.
Listened to this album half a dozen times to try to get a feel for it. Overall it was background music while I worked. A couple of songs stood out and caused me to take notice. Nothing grating. Good album.
This is a classic. It would interesting to know what Amy would have put out if she had been able to become healthy and keep recording.
I liked the music the voice is beautiful didn't really pay much attention to the lyrics
Somehow knowing the backstory makes this more powerful and poignant but still a great soul album regardless
Very close to a 5… this soulful, funky and pristine pop…..All in one!!
yes.
Amy Winehouse once sucked me off through a glory hole in a pub in Clapham. She slurped that jizz right up. Swallowed me whole. I felt so small in that massive hole. I think the incident inspired the album Back to Black.
Amy Winehouse has such a classic voice. It feels like you're being sent to a dream like state. What a beautiful style. Although this album didn't have too much variety and was short, I enjoyed it.
Mejores canciones: You Know I'm No Good, Back To Black, Tears Dry On Their Own.
It’s hard to get past the cautionary note and forecast of tragedy aspect of this, particularly when the catchy, hooky mega hit of the album is an absolutely succinct explanation of how Winehouse would come to die at 27. Very good but already showing wear: it sounds mostly to me like vanishing potential.
7/10
I remember when this album first came out, because of the face that Winehouse was always in the news for various drink, drug and relationship issues I didn’t think much of her, or her music. Fast forward 10 years and I’m listening to it one day, and realised that she was an incredibly talented musician who sadly lived her life via her music….or maybe the music told the story of her life. Either way it’s a very sad story and one that should be a lesson to young talent. She has a great voice that’s able to transmit the feeling of the songs so well, again I’m not a fan of bad language in music and there are the occasional lapses into it in this album. We will never really know the depths of her talent because of her short life but we have a little something to remind us of her
Back to black, rehab, tears dry on their own, you know I'm no good Magnifique, grosse hésitation pour le 5 étoiles mais bon.. pas au niveau d'un chef d'oeuvre
Listening back, the sound is lush - much more detailed than I remembered. Dips just a little with the last few songs.
Pretty damn good. Amazing voice. Nice modern twist to classic Motown R&B. Very Phil Spector. Not sure if her fashion, voice, lyrics land for me as amazing homage or derivative. It seems to build on the genre by modernizing, adding a darker edge via honesty, depression, swearing and drug refs, but it is also whole cloth just the same old same old. It’s like the gen x punk people who became rockabilly, is it cool or is it lame? I did find the album lacking crescendos, wondering if her voice can nail a few, but maybe I’ve heard too much Adele who filled the void left by Amy. Overall mostly fives on this album, a few lesser songs but pretty damn tight.
Repeat Album. 7/10
Why don’t you come on over… and listen to this album
I love this album and think it's her best work
Klassík, krafturinn og túlkunin hjá henni gera mig hálf orðlausa.
an album full of hurt, low self-esteem and desperate need - great arrangements and vocals, but a sad sad person at the heart of it.
Soul and R&B album. Featuring some of the best songs by Amy Winehouse. Certainly talented a vocalist with great vocal range.
So much promise
Genuinely soulful. My mom like Amy Winehouse
Good, chunky pop music infused with jazz. Great lyrics as well, although i've heard rehab three billion times too many.
A very well produced pop/soul thing that works in most aspects, but like 50% of the album is pretty forgettable.
Really good - how did I miss this the first time round? Has a Motown feel.
I don't think I've heard most of these songs. Amy's voice does it all and the album works as a cohesive piece. So many early-2000s memories tied to the hits.
Very good, like it a lot 👍
Very well produced and her vocals are amazing. Tragic life she lived, but she left some great music for us to enjoy. Really liked the tracks from Mark Ronson; I didn't know he produced them, but they immediately sounded like his type of song to me. Great album.
i have such mixed feelings about this one. she was such a mess that it really put me off at the time...but that voice, and that sound, and her uncompromising writing...it's hard to be objective, is what i'm saying. but yeah, i like this quite a lot in the end, even though i don't think i care for the picture i have of her in my mind.
Interseting
Great instrumentation. Her voice isn’t the best but it suits the music perfectly 4/5
Pop com muito soul e vocal poderoso
Catchy.
Always loved Amy. Back to Black is a sad song but always my fav
A really strong album from Amy Winehouse. Not a genre I've listened to much before, but her voice just grabs you. Some really great tunes on this album.
Great artists excellent music
First 2 songs are bangers Rest is mediocre 4/5
Back To Black is the great album everyone know. It is musically brilliant with deep lyrics sang by the beautiful voice of Amy. There is no other album such as Back To Black and its came at the perfect time to be globally successful. It's a simple idea played during 40 minutes and it's well achieved.
Buy.
She had such a beautiful voice. This album is terrific. The pain she expresses sounds so genuine that, although it’s outcome is terrible, it really elevates the art.
One of the better pop albums of the last 20 years because it rejects the overproduced pop production that has become so common for an at times spacey, live band ode to soul and R&B. The production shines but Winehouse's vocals are the clear star. Her music still feels as refreshing as it is catchy yet devastating.
Fave song this listen was Tears Dry On Their Own
Yeah decent. Few songs sound like they should be a bond theme song
I liked hearing the different influences by decade but it didn't hold my attention beginning to end.
very cohesive, music is not my style.
Great voice. The songs I knew were the best overall. Others were catchy but nothing awe inspiring.
The first time I heard this I was surprised I liked it at all. Despite her being an annoyingly constant press presence at the time, there is no denying Amy had a hell of a voice. I'm not usually one for female voices, but hers is beautiful, and so strong. Some of these songs are perfect pop pieces. Everything came together wonderfully on this album.
Al reka san ne može
Really nice surprise in the mix
Вступительная Rehab будто быстро надоедает из-за своего слишком резкого повторяющегося "no, no, no"/"go, go, go". Back To Black, Tears Dry On Their Own и Wake Up Alone.
Nota: 8/10
Great. First song is the worst
gotta love that unique voice, with some honky tonk big swing era throwback beats. iconic pop music that will grace quick-serve restaurant playlists for the next 15 years at least
You can tell this album is big simply from the length of the Wiki page! This was actually the first time I've listened to the full album. I'm scoring highly for talent, execution, legacy and I'm sure it will influence people for generations to come, but I can't give it 5/5. Other than a couple of songs, it's not totally my vibe. I assume everyone else will give it full marks though so that will more than make up for it. 8.5/10
Always a pleasure to stick this record on. Especially on a Sunday. A mid to high 4.
02/11 - Yesterday I worked on developing the top of wall details at the drum storage building, had a final coordination meeting on the drum storage building, and printed a new set of MFG. I did some miscellaneous items as well throughout the day such as updating the drawing list or adjusting views on sheets. I thought this album was really good. Not one song I didnt like on it or skipped over. Amy's story alone was very intriguing to me and I am curious where her career would have been if she was able to stay clean and continue to outperform her competition.
pretty good
Paved the way for a lot of British retro soul.
I did not know that Amy Winbousouse sounded like that, she is super soul..ly? Talk about having biases and asumptions.
it's Amy Winehouse. pretty good, 8/10
❤️❤️❤️
2006, Soul rnb Pop,
Jazz, soul, r&b. Muy bueno!
Great stuff!
Great album, amazing voice! Fave track - I was expecting it to be "Rehab", but I think I'm actually gonna go for "Back to Black"!
Good pop
8.5/10
Really good stuff, brass +
Surprised how much I liked it
I love the style but songs seem a little repatative
I already know this good
Fijn rustig album. Zou top zijn als LP
Favorite: Just Friends
Alot of bangers. Not my thing though. Solid Album
It's Amy
Good vocals and enjoyable tone. She knows what she's doing
I really enjoyed this album, did not expect to. Not a huge fan of the Rehab song, which I think was the only one I had heard previously.
Great album, great voice
incredible, classic.
Just real good stuff! Real fucking good stuff!!
Creative
Really good album, need to listen to more of this.
false
good shit
very good its a classic duhhhhh
There's a certain morbid curiosity here that reminds me of reading David Foster Wallace's thoughts on suicide. Maybe if Amy would have said yes to rehab, she'd still be around, but would we even know who she was? Best track: Rehab
2006. Key Songs: Back To Black, Rehab, Valerie, Tears Dry On Their Own
Great voice, kinda jazzy
It's not really my cup of tea but there are undoubtedly strong songs on there and her voice is brilliant. Peaks with the first two songs.
Good, not great. I’ve never really understood the hype.
No private session used for Spotify. Credit to Amy's talent to get an album so anachronistic so popular. It's a good album and a fun listen, but not sure when I will put it on.
All though I knew some songs from this album fully listening to it was definitely worth it!
I’m not really a fan of Amy Winehouse’s style (her sound, her overdone eyeliner, her poofed up ratty hair…), and Rehab was so overplayed back in the day I could barely stand it… But I’m told she’s a good artist, and I was turned on to the title track through a Beyoncé cover featured in Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby Movie (I rather listen to that version). All of this to say, I got through this album, but don’t plan to revisit.
pretty good
20 years on, when every lightweight The Voice/X Factor/Idol/whatever contestant has a soul fry to their voice, 'Back to Black' sounds cliched and tired. But you cannot overestimate the impact this had when it came out in 2006: it was the era of new rock and Brooklyn hipster bands, and suddenly this sexy, slinky Wall of Sound erupted from London and recast popular music in its image. Of course it is now tinged with sadness and tragedy. All those songs about drug-fueled love and refusing rehab were too hard-earned, depriving us of an answer as to whether Winehouse was a genuine superstar or lightning in a bottle. Perhaps it is too soon to properly judge. Mark Ronson remains ascendant; so much of popular music today carries either his signature or his influence. Maybe we need another decade for music to move on in order to look back with clear ears. But in the meantime we have that voice, that attitude, these songs. Winehouse can more than hold her own with the pop divas of the 21st century, and indeed with the originals from the 60s - and that's some serious company to keep.
