Back In Black

An obvious classic. It married a hard rock sound, with actual tunes and manages to have fun with it at the same time. The light and shade means that you can actually recognise and enjoy specific tunes and the voice is fun without being grating.

Theirs is nothing particularly complicated, or innovative, or fresh about Accadacca, but when they do what they do well there is no other band that can touch them. Yes, a lot of their stuff is hard to tell apart, even on this album (but that’s the same for the Rolling Stones, or Muse), some of the lyrics are absolutely terrible in terms of the crassness and misogyny (“Let me put my love into you, babe / let me cut your cake with my knife” for example), and two-thirds of the rhythm section is literally just count-to-four simplistic, but when the whole starts firing well, fuck me but you can’t help but nod your head. There’s a reason why this is one of the biggest selling albums of all time.

It takes real talent to write a whole album of songs in only two(ish) keys that's this good. AC/DC make up for only knowing a handful of basic chords by producing some of the biggest, boldest riffs known to man. What they lack in diversity of musical palette or depth of lyrics they make up for in sheer energy. Banger after banger. If they had been able to include a single interesting chord change this would be a 5 star album.

Massive record, massive singles, and a comeback story for the ages.

Come on, this is an easy one

Rock classic. They have the formula, they use it, and they do so as best as it can be done. The riffs are bombproof. The hooks enormous. Not a ton of range, but a blast to listen to.

Hard to imagine a better opening song than “Hell’s Bells.” I’m teaching Macbeth right now, and it would play perfectly in the Porter scene! The album is tight and rocking (of course). I’m no AC/DC fan but considered giving it a 5.

I'm not a fan of AC/DC, but when you listen to the whole album as the band intended it to be, it leaves you with a completely different and much more enjoyable picture than listening to the songs separately.

Classic rock

The monstrous hits from this album are fun, and culturally omnipresent. But the album is actually a drag. AC/DC has a very clear formula for their music...and boy do they stick with it. I don't think there's a different drum beat across the 42 minutes of music on this album, nor is there a double hit on the bass drum. This is just straightforward, uninventive rock music. And it is pretty much a double-entendre concept album, as a friend of mine put it. I recognize the cultural impact of this album, and respect the hooks and riffs that drove it to selling millions of copies. But this album is formulaic and conventional, and tiresome in its adolescent obsession with sexual innuendo - oftentimes in problematic ways.

The first album with Brian Johnson comes on like thunder...even though that classic isn't on the album. I know a lot of classic AC/DC fans prefer the Bon Scott era, but I tend to love more of the Johnson era songs more than the earlier ones. This album comes on super strong with Hell's Bells--an absolute classic. Shoot to Thrill is a little more on the average side for me personally, even though I know it's a big hit. The title track and You Shook Me All Night Long... nothing needs to be said about those two. Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution is a deeper cut that I always loved. As usual with AC/DC, there are a few filler tracks, but less than many of their albums. It's not like the slower moments are really slow, afterall. For me this is probably their best, or near best album. Not quite a pure 5/5 but maybe rounds up.

Is this a bit of a safe pick? Sure. Do I care? Not at all. I'm fully willing to admit that I have quite the soft spot for "basic dad rock," and AC/DC might be the epitome of "basic dad rock." Back in Black is basically just 10 straight songs of rock and roll and that's really all it needs to be. Of course, there are interesting things to discuss regarding this album. For one, there's the history. The last AC/DC album I discussed, Highway to Hell, was their last album with their original vocalist, Bon Scott. Well, after his death, the band recruited Brian Johnson to sing from that point on, starting with this album here, Back in Black. I liked Bon Scott's vocals well enough on Highway, but I do prefer Brian as a vocalist myself. Yeah it's kind of funny to imagine these songs as Toad from the Mario games instead, but I think Brian's voice fits the vibe this band needs. The band may effectively have one style of song, but they play that style really well. Something something "one kick 10000 times." You get the idea. The riffs on display here are strong. I mean, there's a reason why songs like the title track and "You Shook Me All Night Long" are as iconic as they are. It's because they're good songs. The energy here is strong, and that's commendable. The album is a little repetitive, but there are stand out moments. Obviously, the two songs I mentioned earlier are classics, and "Hells Bells" is actually a really cool opener that serves as a fitting tribute to Bon Scott. That's neat. The writing could've aged better, but it could've aged a lot worse. The pacing is perfect for the album. This album knows what it wants to be, lives the life it needs to, and sells 50 million copies doing it. Back in Black is really good at being the album it needs to be. 4/5. I'm 2/3s of the way done now!

This is one of those stone-cold dad albums that's on the radios, athletic events, movies/tv. So for some of the biggest tracks on this album, I immediately associate those tracks with whatever venue/media has used those songs. But I think I like the riffs more so than the songs themselves. Listening to the grating vocals of ACDC gives me the same vicarious pain as watching an overly sun exposed senior using a tanning bed. That being said, an album and a band that is unapologetically themselves. Driving percussion and a trundling electric guitar push through the entirety of the album faithfully though it grew a little tiresome by the third song.

It's been a while since we had a billion play song and here we have two. 45 years later this album is still rockin' and everyone knows at least one song from it

Rating: 2.5 This was actually the second CD I ever owned. It’s the same exact song 10 times. It’s as fine as fine gets. If you wanted to play an alien a few songs to show them the most basic popular music possible this would be the album you’d choose.

I wish there were more songs on here when Brian Johnson sung a bit lower - his voice is way better when he does! Otherwise yeah, this is kind of a blueprint type album, hard to overstate the important of. 3.5*

It's a fun hard rock record, they're super energetic and upbeat, which is pretty much the AC/DC trademark sound. Lyrically it isn't too complex or dark, pretty straightforward. The downside for me is that it's pretty monotonous, there's not much variation or different ideas. If you like the biggest songs ("You Shook Me All Night Long" and "Back In Black"), you'll like the album. It's a good rock project, just nothing too innovative or noteworthy beyond the hits.

Didn’t expect much from this and it was much as I anticipated. Really crap lyrics accompanying monotonous sound.

Countless movie soundtracks and commercials. This music has been everywhere. I was even reminded of Butt-Head wearing an AC DC shirt. Though I have never listened to the album before, I knew every song. There is a reason this is the second best selling album of all time. I am not going to lie- the short shorts really threw me. I had no idea what the lead singer looked like and I would not have guessed that voice came from that body. Who could possibly dislike, "Rock and Roll ain't Noise Pollution"!?!?

This album was obviously very influential throughout rock, from metal to punk. I don't know if it's fatigue from hearing it a lot growing up, or if it's just that because its influence is so far reaching that it doesn't feel as important to me, but it's certainly not an album I'm itching to put on. Still a good listen. 3/5

I never had much use for AC/DC. Brian Johnson's voice really grates on me. Hard rock, arena rock leaves me flat. No subtlety.

Pros and you can hear it. Not my everyday band but the album is a hit machine. High energy, all parts of the band as good as the next.

Juvenile lyrics, but the band chose a sound—and committed to it. Polished, in its way. I have to respect that. Aside maybe from “You Shook Me All Night Long,” I didn’t want to hear this coming from the back of the school bus (where all the older, mean kids were) in 1980. And I don’t need to hear it now.

I can smell the cigarette smoke behind my high school shop class. Interestingly, I probably enjoy the album more now that I did then. Mostly the instrumentation, the are some great riffs here i typed a more detail review but it glitched. AC/DC isn't my thing, but there are many tunes on this album that are classics. A worthy entry that was a fun listen, but not something I'll return to.

Timeless rock album with 3 classics, needs to be considered one of their best if not their best album

Not a huge AC DC guy. It’s kinda loud and abrasive. That being said, I can’t knock their musical chops and the uniqueness of the vocals. There are a few popular anthems on this album that stand out, primarily due to the guitar and bass riffs imo. Back in Black and You Shook Me All Night Long, in particular. The part of the album between Hells Bells and Back in Black kinda just sounds the same. Then the album gets good with some really great guitar riffs. If you need to run through a brick wall, queuing up this album might help. Ending on Rock and Roll is Noise Pollution is incredibly hard - bonus points. Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, but closer to 4.

It's interesting, I feel like half (literally 5 of 10) of these songs are classics that get me pumped up and singing the lyrics, and the other half are wholly forgettable. But what's strange is that all 10 sound like pretty much the same song. So why do I love half and not care about the other half? No clue, but the good songs are fucking awesome.

The ultimate “a little goes a long way” band for me. Good riffs, good energy, good music to be a fat guy pumping your fist to when your relief pitcher comes in and you’re feeling hype, good to play the music in Guitar Center when you’re testing out a Gibson SG, but not especially memorable or interesting after 40 minutes. At its best, sounds like Zeppelin, at its worst sounds like Guns n Roses…”Shake a Leg” is fun. I can enjoy it for what it is but wouldn’t seek it out.

This album contains a firework of guitar-riffs from start to finish plus a bunch of their greatest hits. A few weaker numbers cost them the five stars for me. 4,5

Once again very biased... the only song i hadn't favorited was "have a drink on me" so almost a perfect album for me personally But, most people have heard the titel track, the band and seen the album. It kinda ticks the boxes for a must hear album even though it's not your style. It's Easy listened rock, gets a bit repetitive if you're not into it (I'll admit, they use the same 4 chord power progression... but hey, who doesn't)

AC/DC are the quintessential bar band for me. If I hear them when I’m out drinking I’m guaranteed a good time. Expect this album not to land as well just listening in the house, but no I still had a great time with it.

I get why this is a classic, just not my thing. Pretty good guitar but the vocals are the same on every song and none of these are ones I’d really go back to despite how iconic a lot of them are

If you don't think this album rocks, then you don't rock. Simple as that. When I was growing up, I was a huge Milwaukee Brewers fan (still am), and we added an old Trevor Hoffman, a closer, who had already cemented himself as a Hall of Famer. His entrance song was Hells Bells. He ended up getting his 600th save with the Brewers (only the second all-time to ever reach that milestone). So that song has a place in my heart, unrelated to music. Musically, it just rocks. There really isn't any other way to describe it. And it's loaded with hits. At the end of "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution", I was still ready for this album to have at least 2 or 3 more songs. Favorite Song(s): Hells Bells, Back in Black, You Shook Me All Night Long, Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution

Some good, old-fashioned, turn your brain off rock and roll. As an Aussie, I was raised by a dad big into Aussie rock and AC/DC was one of the bands he had on pretty regularly. This album has some of my favourite songs by them and is just all round a loud, fun rock album. The fact that they lost Bon Scott and immediately picked up where they left off is amazing!

I really liked this! Only was familiar with the classic hits off this album but I would definitely listen again.

Great album

I've had lots of fun listening to this album and I even came back to re-listen some of the songs during the day. But the thing is, there's just a lot more interesting music from this time period that I already know of. Still, it's good and I'll definitely introduce it to my kids.

Sheesh... that was hard to get through. I remember being into AC/DC's hits back in middle school, but I'm not sure I've ever listened to an album all the way through - definitely not in adulthood. The songs here are pretty monotonous, particularly through the first half - there's very little in the way of dynamic or tonal variety to maintain interest. Sure, it may be one of the best selling albums of all time, but can anyone really argue bands like Led Zeppelin weren't playing better heavy, blues inflected hard rock nearly a decade before this album, while also being able to incorporate some other sounds, too? The only bright spot for me are Angus Young's leads, which place him as one of the more lyrical and tasteful soloists of the era, which is striking when very little of the rest of the music exhibits any sort of nuance.

If you don't like AC/DC's sound, then you're not gonna like the album. Luckily, I do, so I do. Yes, their songs are all the same. Yadeyadeya. I understand. HOWEVER, I propose to you this: Hell's Bells? Banger. You Shook Me All Night Long? Banger. Back in Black? Banger. Let Me Put My Love into You? Banger. Shoot to Thrill? Banger. Rock n' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution? Banger. You get my point.

I’ve never knowingly listened to this album before but of course, I know the hits. All I can really say about this album is that it is tremendous fun and it’s clear why it is so popular; definitely worth hearing before you die.

OMG Spinal Tap totally ripped these guys off! We almost got to 3stars during "You Shook Me" and "Shake a Leg" but 2stars was sealed by "Let Me Put My Spinal Tap Into You" and "Spinal Tap Ain't Noise Pollution"

I mean, it’s classic Acca Dacca! Like this is quintessential Australian rock and it still goes so hard. The riffs (like Back in Black) are unbelievably iconic. My only reservation is that some of the lyrical content (like Giving the Dog a Bone and Let Me Put My Love Into You) is pretty damn nasty. (4.5 stars)

AC/DC is the PBR of rock music. It’s not special. It’s not that good. It’s been the same since the 80s. But damnit, sometimes it’s what the party needs.

One could easily be confused into thinking is a greatest hits album. Almost every song has gotten radio time and it slaps top to bottom. Not really an A and B side so much as two A sides. Blistering solos and passionate vocals make this one for the ages. Fave song: Back in Black

Shit I am excited to listen to this! The music is very solid, all the riffs are simple but perfectly on point for the genre, and the band is tight! holy smokes, the vocals kept slamming on track, and they just keep the energy from start to end. Even though this album did not reinvent the wheels, they sure did a perfect demonstration of how simplied riffs get people riled uip good.

Rock and roll baby!

Two of the most recognizable openings riffs on back to back tracks on this album with the title track followed up with You Shook Me All Night Long. Listening to this album today for the first time in a very long time, brought back joyous memories of seeing them perform at Sarstock way back in 2003. It was so hot with no shade in sight but that didn’t stop me and my friends for sucking back joint after joint, taking in all the great times that day. I was 18 at the time, which really is the sweet spot for AC/DC whose music really is dumb and fun, I was dumb and fun so of course I was into them. What a great day that was, so thankful for it. 5 stars

Sin duda los AC/DC son un grupazo, su metal es genial y me la pasé bomba escuchando el Back in Black en una de mis caminatas nocturnas. Pero tengo un temita con AC/DC: no consigo conectar del todo con la voz de Johnson. Me gusta, pero como que su agudeza termina cansándome un tanto. Una vez alguien me dijo que parecía que escuchaba cantar a Chabelo, y ese es un dato que es imposible borrar de la mente y no imaginárselo rockeando durísimo.

No one out there sounds like AC/DC, and this album is so full of loud, raucous hits, it's sort of crazy. This is the gold standard of hard rock. Solid.

Couldn’t tell these songs apart to save my life

Took at 2 hour bike ride yesterday (nbd) but started with Arhitecture and Morality, then Brothers and closed with Back in Black. For the last album I felt like I could bike 1000 miles at 100 mph. ROCKING out. Fun as fuck. I think I prefer Bon Scotts voice and general vibe, but these may be AC/DC's best all around songs. They have ONE speed and its rockin. How do they lose their singer then sell 50M records? Was Johnson contributing significantly to the song writing?

I don’t think I’ve ever turned down an AC/DC song. There’s a quote about writing that I love that it something like ‘talent is being able to be versatile, but true genius can only be itself’ (not, i searchdd for this online and can’t find it anywhere, maybe someone just said it to me once in conversation, who knows). Like Hemingway, like Pynchon, like Berhnard, Ac/dc has only one style, but by limiting them, this style makes them singular. Fond memories of Sean and I covering ‘you shook me all night long’ as 12 year old virgins at a church sponsored battle of the bands.

Thank you Satan and Australia for giving humanity this drug I wrote about my experience growing up with the AC/DC Live album when we had Highway To Hell a few months back. These guys were hands down the coolest effing thing my parents ever gifted me and my brothers besides… well, life itself, I guess. Lyrics aside, this album gets people of all ages jacked up to do anything from cleaning toilets to scoring touchdowns. The guitar work is actually fantastic, Brian Johnsons voice is impossible to imitate by mere mortals and there aint a dead track in these 42 minutes. If there is a greatest thing of the 1980s or Hard Rock itself, its this. This is the top.

Great album to return to after a few days away from this site, though I must admit that I'm a little sad to be bidding AC/DC adieu this early. It's been 40 or so albums since I landed on Highway to Hell and I was hoping I could have one last chance to get into their discography before landing on this album. Yeah, I'm not an AC/DC guy. If there's one thing my true blue, patriotic love for my country can't do, it's become acclimated to the screeching tones of our biggest cultural export. Nevertheless, I shall try. I liked this one quite a bit more than Highway to Hell. I'm more favourable to Brian Johnson's vocal style, even if Bon Scott was the heart and creative spirit of the band. His performances are more subdued and he carries himself with a cool swagger which is difficult not to nod along to. The instrumentals are all pretty standard fare for AC/DC, though I ain't complaining. There's plenty of pretty good guitar riffs on this thing. "Givin the Dog a Bone" is a good cut. The guitar hook during the verses is pretty great, and I dig the chorus and soaring tones of Johnson's vocal performance. "Let Me Put My Love Into You" has a great chorus. Big fan of the backup vocalists. Yeah. That title track, huh. Great song, and what is easily my favourite song from AC/DC. The guitar riff is auditory gold and what I can confidently call the best thing to come from hard rock. It's silky smooth while also packing a great deal of punch. I'm also a big fan of how effortlessly the song transitions into the chorus. Johnson's vocals are also worthy of praise. I enjoy how curt the songwriting is in the beginning of the track before going completely bonkers from the mid-point onwards. There's no tune more worthy of rocking out to than this one. I don't need any persuading as to why this album belongs in here, so I'm not gonna check the book. AC/DC are the only band I can think of who have successfully managed to navigate the murky waters of a lead vocalist dying. Even then, this is an album which is pretty emblematic of the genre it represents and was massively successful at the time. I can't think of a better representation of an artist's discography than this album and Highway to Hell. They're *the* albums. I cosign this inclusion wholeheartedly

The energy on this album. Hells bells is such a intro song for an album. Genius to start off with the bells. The first 4 songs are non-stop racing pace bangers. I admire their energy levels throughout this entire album. This is rock and roll.

Publikumsfavoritten You Shook Me All Night Long er egentlig bare en Journey låt med litt mer fuzz. Og det er vel greit. Folk vokser opp og mister litt av teen angsten, dog blir dette den låta man synger med på litt for sent på puben på samme måte som Don’t Stop Believing. Det er stemning, men det er ikke den rå energien som gjør AC/DC til et band jeg aldri vokser helt fra.

Av låtene som er på plata er det få som kunne vært sunget av Scott i det arrangementet de har valgt her, kanskje bare tittelsporet. Bandet har et klart og tydelig DNA de ikke vil bort fra, men det er klart at Brian tilfører noe rått til det. Det er nok mye nostalgi i dette albumet for min del også. Det er gåsehud allerede når gitarriffet på Hells Bells kommer ruslende inn blant klokkene. Uansett hvor mye jeg liker å høre på rock som er utfordrende, hardere, mer "interessant" så vil AC/DC alltid være der til å minne meg på at rock også skal være gøy og uhøytidelig. Ren glede. This is really just one “note” played several different ways. That’s not a bad thing if you like what they’re selling, but you REALLY have to be bought in. I like this album. I get why people love it, but it’s just ok for me. The vocals grate on me after a while, and the lyrics are pretty dumb. For what it is, though? A big dumb rock record? You could do worse. 6/10

This is such a great album. It's so perfectly written, performed, recorded and mixed and it's a joy to listen to. Really puts me in a kick-ass mood and I love it. Everything is so punchy and tight and it's just got a great groove. Almost every song is a bona fide out-of-the-ballpark hit and the ones that aren't should be, because they're easily nearly as good as the rest. I listened to it twice and bought it on vinyl just now because I love it so much. Five stars.

I'd previously only consumed AC/DC casually, one song at a time, so I didn't appreciate how repetitive and grating they would be in album format. Each song is its own joke, often off-color, repeated ad nauseum for three minutes or so, you know, to make sure you get the joke. I couldn't bring myself to finish this.

Classic rock album. Such a raspy, scratchy voice, but somehow built a following with it. The music is fun, upbeat, and cheesy, but it's catchy. Growing up hearing it in various places, it's certainly caught on as a bit of a piece of nostalgia, but it's not something I would regularly visit. Solid part of music history.

AC/DC are a bit of a one trick pony and I feel you’ve heard one LP you’ve heard them all. In saying that though it a decent trick and fun to revisit. It just doesn’t push boundaries or offer anything particularly new or different.

Album No. 0020 on my list. Finally an album that I've completely known before it came up here! This is of course a classic and one most important and best-selling albums of all time. It has some iconic songs on it ("Hells Bells", "Back in Black", "You Shook Me All Night Long") as well as my personal AC/DC favorite ("Shoot to Thrill"). Great, straightforward sound, classic AC/DC tunes and I indeed like Brian Johnson better than Bon Scott as AC/DC's singer. That being said, there are not many outstanding songs there beyond the ones that I've already mentioned. No bad ones, not at all, but as always with AC/CD: they have a certain recipe. So all in all - great album, but few incredible songs. 4/5 stars!

I used to be one of those middle school kids that listened to AC/DC in like the early 2000's, so I do look back on this album fondly, even if I'm a little embarrassed about that. It's not something I would put on anymore, but this did have a lot of their best hits.

4/5. This is a mostly fantastic rock album. I remember being younger and completely rejecting this because it was too "radio-friendly" or "simple." The riffs go so hard and although Johnson's vocals can be a little grating at times, there is a punk sensibility to it that kind of bypasses the need to care. The main downside is the very aged (and let's be real, not great for the time either) lyrics that go way over the line of what is okay to sing about. It is very un-punk to even joke about disrespecting consent and some of the lyrics are not sex-positive, just kind of gross, there is a difference. Glad the hits are mostly okay, even the line "She told me to come but I was already there" in Shook Me All Night is hilarious and the type of lyrics that hold up because it's a self-roast. The guitar solos and riffs truly save some of these songs. Either way, I do think this is a necessary listen but can't say it's my favorite, still a great front to back for the most part and deserves higher than average score. In the world of iconic rock albums, this is certainly near the top. While you know this album as AC/DCs explosive big release, don't forget, this was the 1st release after the loss of their legendary lead singer, Bon Scott. To have this album be the 1st with a brand new singer is incredible. The tolling of the bell at the beginning of the album is the perfect start to this classic rock ball-breaker of an album. Rather than focus on the songs everyone (should) knows by heart (almost 2 BILLION listens on Spotify for Back and Black and You Shook Me), try Shoot to Thrill, Have a Drink on Me and Shake a Leg for incredible guitar licks and epic arrangements that you won't forget. Long live ACDC and Angus Young. Nobody did what they do better than them.

For a band that I've know since I was an infant, listening to some of their songs that my father use to play when I was very little and that helped me move from listening to only EDM to Rock, I found this album to be very very stale and quite boring. From my perspective, the only redeemable traits from this record is the clean sound and the attitude, as I can't deny that it feels like they are having fun and giving all they got, specially in the first three songs. However, I'm one of those guys that finds this album to be excessively safe, to the point it seems like they used the same exact blueprint for almost every song. I thought I would like this album more. At least I don't have enough reasons to give it only second two stars, as there's a little bit of personality to it and I'll admit that 'Hells Bells' is a song that I really like.

Today is my one year anniversary of this journey, and the whole time, I've been wondering when AC/DC will pop up. Nevermind that, though. Scroll down to the hilarious five-star review posted on October 3rd, 2022. That's all I need to say to justify my rating for one of the best Rock And Roll albums of all time. Favorite Track: "Back In Black".

Growing up my parents often had the classic rock station on, and several tracks from this album were in heavy rotation, so this is pretty nostalgic. "Hells Bells" and the title song are my favorites here. I found Johnson's voice a little grating after a while, and the kinda predatory lyrics of "Let Me Put My Love Into You" made me uncomfortable.

The first one on the list that i recognized and have heard a few of the songs! Honestly an iconic album!! Golden classic rock! Pumped me up and I always can appreciate the instrumentals in an 80s rock song!

I got my bad habit of only listening to the same singles over and over again from my father. This album is proof of that - he listened to this album CONSTANTLY as he drove me around, but basically only Hell's Bells and Back in Black. (To be fair, 85% of the other songs are about sex, but that never stopped him from playing "Big Balls" all the time). I'm so glad I listened to the entire thing, because holy crap, does this album ROCK. It's strange to say - Bon Scott was such a unique presence and energy that made AC/DC what it is - but is it possible that Brian Johnson perfected what Bon Scott made?

Is it better than I remember? Sure. Is it a terrible uninspired led Zeppelin rip off? Seems like it. Guitarist knows what he's doing and it's got a decent rhythm section. But that falsetto scream throughout the entire album just grates. I can see why they become popular, but man. After two songs I was over it.

I’ve never had the mettle to tell my adoptive countryfolk what I think of AC/DC. For a start the right moment’s never arrived, but also the idea of broaching the subject within contexts that AC/DC is most often broadcast – big boozy nights, sporting events, big boozy sporting events, weddings – is ridiculous. Imagine it, there I am leaping about the dancefloor to the supercharged, undeniably bombastic, bogan blue-collar blues of AccaDacca when the thought occurs to grab the bloke nearest and tell him how, actually, quite a lot of AC/DC’s output is not just boring and unimaginative – it’s also performatively macho in a way that gives me pause to sob internally, a risibly chauvinistic sort of posing for the male gaze. (Not this particularly song though, I’d concede while being flanked and hugged by my boys, fair enough.) So while I can enjoy AC/DC under certain conditions, those conditions usually lead to the sort of spotty or selective memory that would be best applied to this record. (Seriously, what is “Givin the dog a bone” supposed to do for anyone?) Two stars, scaled to a four if completely pissed. Just don’t tell anyone.

Classic album, but not really what I like

AC/DC are like that factory employee that comes to work regularly, does a good job, is consistently producing quality materials, but I really wouldn't want to have to watch him work all the time. If I owned the factory, I would walk the floor and occasionally stop to see that he is still doing the same quality work, and then move on to other more important things. With that said, this was sort of the first day on the job for AC/DC with the new singer and man did they start off with a bang, or really more of a bong... or series of bongs. "Hell's Bells" with that slow churning but escalating guitar riff just might be the best hard rock opening tune to any album ever. I remember dropping the needle on this bad boy (yes, I am old) and holy shit...

Obviously a Classic. We all know the story. The hits have all been played ad nauseum on Classic Rock radio to the point that we know all the words and can air guitar the riffs with remarkable accuracy, whether we like it or not. Known neither for their breadth or depth, AC/DC is instantly recognizable as an unchanging, unsubtle, unstoppable force. My preference leans toward the earlier Bon Scott-fronted material (the "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" album in particular), but it really doesn't matter. AC/DC is AC/DC and always will be nothing more or less than AC/DC.

I've never really been able to get into AC/DC. It's not terrible. Angus and Malcolm were both great players in their day for sure. You need to be a really technical rhythm guitarist to make those riffs sound just right. It's meat and potatoes rock and roll. It gets the job done but you will tire of it pretty quickly. There is no variation in tone, theme, pace, nothing. No texture other than the stickiness of a barroom floor.

(1.5 stars) AC/DC (and this album), are so conflicting. On the one hand, they are a riff machine. On the other, the lead singer sounds like Miss Piggy being tortured. Low-key unlistenable. I skimmed the 1001 list and there’s so many albums like this: ones from rock bands obsessed over by the most boring white man in a bar. Dunno if I can stick it out tbh.

Again really not my type of music. I think the bits I enjoyed the most was the guitar solos and when there wasn’t any singing.

So I'm a big Bon Scott AC/DC fan. Loved pretty much every album that they put out with Bon. So, when I first heard You Shook Me All Night Long, I -KNEW- it was AC/DC and it sounded like AC/DC, but the lead singer wasn't Bon and it took me a while to really warm up to Brian Johnson. Since I've gotten a bit older and more mature with my music, I've grown to appreciate Brian Johnson as lead singer for AC/DC and basically they wouldn't have been a very good band without him. I like the album, but none of Johnson's vocal riffs will ever come close to Bon's ability. Sorry, not sorry. Also, this is what started the whole, "Every AC/DC album sounds alike" trend. And, I can't disagree. It's got some bangers for sure though, and I enjoy hearing "You Shook Me All Night Long" on the bar jukebox once a week, maybe more. 3.55/5 stars = 4 on this scale.

As dad rock goes, this is about as good as it gets

Wouw.. A super album, and a rare ocassion where continuing with a new lead singer is possible. Although Bon Scott was iconic, Brian Johnson is delivering strong vocals, and that is on top of some of AC/DCs best tunes. Epic!

1. Hells Bells - 10 Great sound. Guitar sounds amazing, including the solo in the bridge which is just excellent. The intertwined percussions on the drums sounds excellent. The lyrics are words you'd absolutely belt out along to when listening. Outstanding opening track. 2. Shoot to Thrill - 9 Another great sound. Bridge is really weak on the track but the opening 2-3 minutes are freaking excellent. The lyrics in the chorus is what really carries the track, along with the phenomenal drums. Guitar in the outro is another highlight. 3. What Do You Do For Money Honey - 9 Verses are great on this track. More great guitar and drum sound that encompasses what classic rock is. Solo in the bridge is the best of the 3 tracks so far. 4. Giving The Dog A Bone - 4 Guitar and drums are great but the track is lyrically way way too repetitive and completely uninspiring. 5. Let Me Put My Love Into You - 8 The choruses are alright but it's another exquisite guitar solo in the bridge. Enjoy the first verse a lot as well. Overall a decent song. 6. Back in Black - 11 Normally, I would penalize a song for being this repetitive but this is such a classic and the rifs, the solos, the drums are so legendary and iconic. It's just an all-time great track. 7. You Shook Me All Night Long - 10 Great verses and an even better sing-a-long classic of a chorus. Guitar sounds amazing between the lines of the choruses. Drums sound brilliant with the tempo they upkeep. Solo again in the bridge is one of the best on the album. 8. Have A Drink On Me - 10 Guitar sounds amazing in the intro and the build up is just sublime. The first verse is particularly enjoyable as well. Overall, a great track. 9. Shake A Leg - 8 Instrumentally I really enjoy this take but lyrically I find it a bit of a pass over track. It's not anything phenomenal. It's a good track if you like AC/DC's sound and you can enjoy it for that, but outside of that it's just another track on the album. 10. Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution - 7 It's got a great ending and I love the message of the song. Instrumentally it's okay. Lyrically it's a big average is all. Certainly not the best thing on the album but not a bad track to end it on either. Average Rating: 7.80 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 3.90 Rounded Up: 4 Stars

The vocals have a very unique and distinctive sound. I will always recognize an AC/DC song. I can see why people like the music, the instrumentals are wonderful and I like how the lyrics always rhyme. I just found myself very bored and the unique vocals a little annoying after so long.

A classic in hard rock that has earned it's place in music history. I wish I could understand the vocals a bit more, but overall still great to listen to.

I'm supposed to rate this highly as an Australian, but I always found this AC/DC record to be extremely overrated. Highway to Hell is their magnum opus in my eyes, despite this record being immensely more popular. What I did appreciate about this record is the deep cuts. I found the non-hits to be the best parts of this album. Maybe that's because I've heard to death every hit from this record that I generally just don't want to listen to them anymore. Back In Black ESPECIALLY. Let Me Put My Love Into You was definitely a highlight here, even though I'm pretty sure the song is about cum. Anyways, this album is still really good & still a classic, I just don't think it's nearly on the same level as Highway To Hell. Really glad to see both albums get some appreciation on here though. AC/DC’s first album following the death of Bon Scott and in my opinion, is the groups best showcase in their style of exhilaratingly stupid Hard Rock which has blessed the speakers of Makita bluetooth site radios across Australia for over 4 decades. I would say my biggest fault with the album isn’t it being front or back loaded, the first two thirds of the album are actually pretty well spread out. but rather that the last few songs just aren’t up to snuff with the rest of the album, outside of review purposes I don’t think I’d be too interested in listening past you shook me all night long.

Tricky for me to review this with ACDC nostalgia goggles. I learned how to play guitar with several songs from this album when I was young. I bought their greatest hits CD, and every track from it has been seared into my memory. I’m still fond of them, but I don’t listen to them often anymore and some of their songs are quite corny to me now. The lyrics can be too repetitive within the songs themselves. Solid guitar work throughout. All of the instrumentals are on point. Brian Johnson is about as good a replacement lead singer gets, and I like his vocal talent on this album. Have a drink on me was probably the best track I hadn’t heard before. Wall to wall dudes rock songs Highlights: Hells Bells, Shoot to Thrill, Back in Black

ACDC are a band you can rate the albums of based on proportion of hit tracks. Back in Black has a solid 5/10 recognisable tracks, and the filler is listenable. The Young’s always put in a solid effort on the instrumentals, and seeing as this was their first showing since Bon Scott went out like a true blue Australian HERO, Brian Johnson does a good job stepping into those vomit speckled shoes.

I enjoyed this a lot more than other AC/DC stuff, which is to say i didnt hate it. 7/10

Two sides of the same three songs, the only way to distinguish them is how many times you have heard them on Triple M, in a auto parts retailer, at a garage, during the footy or at a gathering where the mean age is above 40. I didn't need to listen to this more than once, I have heard the hits here more times in my life than I would like and of the deep cuts Let Me Put My Love into You might be the stupidest name for a song I have ever heard. It's a fine album but whenever I hear these guys on the radio the prospect of dying in a car crash becomes comforting. Highlights: Shoot to Thrill

Classic rock album. When I was younger and listened to metal with growl I thought AC/DC was quite soft, but it's actually quite hard. It has a very high pitched sound, both from the vocals and the instruments. It's a wall of sound, but every track still manages to be unique and the melodies still shines through. I've heard almost all tracks before and I think ai must admit that I like it more than I thought I would

A seminal album by any measure. Its only weakness is that so many of the tracks have been overplayed to the point they’ve almost become parodies of themselves. Which, I guess, is one proof of excellence.

The best comeback album after your lead singer died? Probably. It shreds. Don't think too hard about it, it's not meant to be dissected. 4.5/5

I knew more of these than I thought I would - a testament to how many of these are in rotation on the radio, TV, etc. AC/DC sounds like AC/DC, but they are good at that. Surprisingly not a bad listen!

Solid

Soundtrack to the youthful, hormone laden Friday night. Chauvinist and a relic of its time, sure. But this album sonically rocks. The lyrics are not for deep contemplation, it’s for just giviner on a fun filled weekend out in the bush.

Rock and roll ain’t noise pollution. Enough said.

I feel like I can’t take this seriously. I said this with their last album - but they sound like a caricature of themselves. It’s not even bad, I actually kind of like it. I just think this sounds like some cliche hard rock band playing metal music in some concert scene in a tv show.
