Reviews (page 3 of 7)
It's like listening to that one whale sound section of "Echoes" by Pink Floyd for 30 minutes. Some fantastic soundscapes. Must listen with headphones.
Although I am not a fan of electronic music, I rather enjoyed this. It felt like background music, something to kinda have on and let it sweep around you. I did think the songs ended a bit abruptly, there's no finality to them. But when you have it on in the background, that's probably wise to not have a song that has a BIG FINISH to it. Top tracks: "Phaedra," "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares"
It's a cool space prog rock kind of album. I can totally see why Steven Wilson has done remixes of it. The title track is so creepy and captivating - it feels like it belongs in Blade Runner or any great sci-fi pic. The second song (Mysterious Semblance...) was more uplifting. It felt like I was looking wide-eyed out the window of a rocket passing through the galaxy. Movements of a Visionary got a little too experimental? The opening 2 minutes felt a bit choppy but it got better from there. Sequent C' feels more like a Braveheart thing than a spacey thing. Still cool. Not usually my scene but something about this album just resonated with me.
This is music for inner and outer space travel. It gives me early pink floyd vibes and vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack.... This was such an innovation at the time...and hits me as an anticipation of electronically driven evolutions of classical music. It's so easy to make these sounds on today's computers, we forget how technically experimental and innovative this music is. Our ears have become accustomed to sounds these days that are more layered and technically complicated that this, but there's a simplicity here that pulls me into a tron-like journey. The soundtrack to cyberspace....with headphones, these tones move through the inside of my skull and define an almost infinite arena of tonal play....
Interesting and I know it's super influential, but too ambient for me to stand out and really catch me.
The start of German electronic music and one of the best albums to come out of the genre. This would go on to inspire Kraftwerk and more in that era and even more in the future. This is just a beautiful album.
i will eat you alive i will eat you alive i will eat you alive i will eat you alive enjoyable, quite so
Nice
Okay I liked it!!
OK - this is what I'd been hoping for with these albums. Something that I'd never heard before, knew nothing about AND (crucially) really want to hear again. I can't even begin to judge this on one listen. So I'll give it 4 stars (because I did enjoy it) and I'll just say it was intriguing enough to give several more listens - like a live Dead show or a good Miles Davis album.
It's not my favourite Tangerine Dream album, but it's still great hearing the origins of electronic music. I haven't heard this album in a long time, but it struck me how much I could hear from other artists who ran with these humble beginnings. Not quite enough for 5 stars, but a strong 4 star album.
music tech II definitely lets me appreciate this album more than i would have but it’s amazing. absolute behemoth of a first song and never bad all the way through
I should listen to more German Electronic
spacial, tribal and a church organ synth swimming beside them both. Great album to put on when you’re feeling introspective or just trying to think. This took me on a journey.
Impressively epic electronic/ambient album. Considering this was made in the 70s, on analog equipment, it’s amazing how fresh and futuristic it still sounds. If you close your eyes you can imagine yourself on a distant barren planet, but it also soundtracked a beautifully gloomy post rain morning walk. One to pack for the flight playlist going forward.
The link to this album goes to an older version that no longer has all the songs, but a deluxe version exists on spoitify. This is an interesting album to start my day because it makes me feel like I'm still dreaming, interesting spacey ambient sound-scapes, I feel like I'm in the movie Logan's Run. Looked at the band's spoitify and low and behold I had some liked songs by them and had no idea, the songs are from the GTA 5 soundtrack.
boy i don't really know how to feel about this one. it was out of my comfort zone. it is really beautiful, haunting. it is out of my comfort zone. it is also a lot of electronic noise. it is out of my comfort zone. i found it very relaxing. it is out of my comfort zone. it's not music i would ever seek out. it is out of my comfort zone. i really liked it? it was out of my comfort zone. but i liked it?
I was unfamiliar with Tangerine Dream but I saw they were electronic and thought that it may be a good album for a morning run. It wasn’t the best album for a run but there was enough that intrigued me to give it another listen and I’m glad I did. The title track especially is a peak ambient, minimalist song and the rest of the album was a shimmering trip. Definitely got Mike Oldfield vibes with this one but instead of the spooky vibes, I got spacey vibes. 4 stars
**In-Depth Review of "Phaedra" by Tangerine Dream** "Phaedra" is the fifth studio album by the German electronic music group Tangerine Dream, released on February 20, 1974. Widely regarded as a seminal work in the electronic music genre, "Phaedra" marked a significant evolution in the band's sound and the broader landscape of electronic music. This review will delve into the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, and its lasting influence, concluding with a balanced assessment of its strengths and weaknesses. ### Lyrics "Phaedra" is an instrumental album, and thus, it does not feature traditional lyrics. The absence of lyrics places a greater emphasis on the music to convey emotion and narrative, relying on sonic textures and dynamics to evoke imagery and feelings. This approach allows listeners to interpret the music subjectively, making the experience deeply personal and varied. ### Music The music of "Phaedra" is characterized by its innovative use of synthesizers, sequencers, and Mellotron. It consists of four tracks: "Phaedra," "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares," "Movements of a Visionary," and "Sequent C'." 1. **Phaedra (17:39)**: - The title track is a masterpiece of ambient and electronic music. It begins with a sequence of pulsating synthesizer patterns created by the Moog synthesizer. These sequences were not entirely controllable, leading to a somewhat random but mesmerizing quality. Layers of Mellotron strings and eerie soundscapes build upon this foundation, creating a sense of vastness and cosmic exploration. The track evolves slowly, maintaining an air of mystery and tension throughout. 2. **Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares (10:45)**: - This track features Edgar Froese's iconic use of the Mellotron. The lush, symphonic sounds of the Mellotron create a dreamlike atmosphere, reminiscent of drifting through a surreal, otherworldly landscape. The piece is more structured than the title track, with a clear melodic progression that conveys both beauty and melancholy. 3. **Movements of a Visionary (7:55)**: - This track showcases the band's use of sequencers to create complex, interlocking patterns. The rhythmic sequences are accompanied by swirling synths and electronic effects, producing a dynamic and immersive soundscape. The track has a more rhythmic and driving feel compared to the rest of the album, highlighting the band's ability to blend ambient textures with rhythmic elements. 4. **Sequent C' (2:17)**: - The closing track is a short, haunting piece dominated by Peter Baumann's flute-like sounds produced on the Mellotron. It serves as a gentle, reflective coda to the album, offering a brief moment of introspection after the expansive sonic journeys of the preceding tracks. ### Production The production of "Phaedra" was groundbreaking for its time. Recorded at The Manor Studio in Oxfordshire, England, the album was produced by Tangerine Dream themselves, with Simon Heyworth as the engineer. The use of analog synthesizers, particularly the Moog, was a significant aspect of the album's sound. The Moog's sequencer allowed for the creation of complex, evolving patterns that were both hypnotic and unpredictable. The Mellotron, an early tape-based sampling instrument, added rich, orchestral textures that contrasted with the synthetic sounds of the Moog. The production process involved extensive experimentation, with the band often embracing the accidental and the random as integral parts of the creative process. This approach resulted in a sound that was both organic and futuristic, with a depth and complexity that rewarded repeated listening. ### Themes While "Phaedra" does not have explicit lyrics to outline its themes, the music itself evokes a range of concepts and emotions: 1. **Cosmic Exploration**: - The album's expansive soundscapes and electronic textures suggest a journey through outer space or uncharted realms. The music often feels like a soundtrack to a science fiction narrative, with each track representing a different chapter or scene. 2. **Mystery and the Unknown**: - The title "Phaedra" references Greek mythology, alluding to themes of passion, tragedy, and the subconscious. The music mirrors these themes through its haunting melodies and atmospheric effects, creating a sense of mystery and intrigue. 3. **Nature and the Sublime**: - Tracks like "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares" evoke natural landscapes transformed into surreal, otherworldly visions. The use of the Mellotron to create lush, symphonic textures enhances this sense of the sublime, blurring the lines between reality and dream. ### Influence "Phaedra" has had a profound influence on the development of electronic music and beyond. Its impact can be seen in several areas: 1. **Electronic Music**: - The album was a pioneering work in the use of sequencers and synthesizers, influencing countless artists in the electronic music genre. Bands like Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre, and later electronic acts such as The Orb and Orbital have cited Tangerine Dream as a key influence. 2. **Ambient Music**: - "Phaedra" helped to define the ambient music genre, with its focus on creating immersive, atmospheric soundscapes. Artists like Brian Eno, who would later become a leading figure in ambient music, were inspired by Tangerine Dream's approach to sound design and composition. 3. **Film Scores**: - Tangerine Dream's work on "Phaedra" laid the groundwork for their later success in film scoring. The band's ability to create evocative, cinematic music led to collaborations with filmmakers and contributions to numerous film soundtracks, including "Sorcerer," "Thief," and "Risky Business." ### Pros and Cons **Pros**: 1. **Innovative Sound Design**: - "Phaedra" was groundbreaking in its use of synthesizers and sequencers, creating a unique and influential sound that was ahead of its time. 2. **Atmospheric and Immersive**: - The album's ability to create rich, immersive soundscapes allows listeners to experience a range of emotions and imagery, making it a captivating listening experience. 3. **Timeless Quality**: - Despite being released in 1974, the album's innovative production techniques and timeless sound have ensured its continued relevance and influence in contemporary music. 4. **Pioneering Ambient Music**: - "Phaedra" played a crucial role in the development of ambient music, influencing a wide range of artists and genres. **Cons**: 1. **Accessibility**: - The album's experimental nature and lack of traditional song structures or lyrics may make it less accessible to some listeners, particularly those unfamiliar with electronic or ambient music. 2. **Pacing**: - The slow, evolving nature of the music may require patience and repeated listening to fully appreciate, which could be a drawback for those seeking more immediate gratification. 3. **Randomness in Sequencing**: - The semi-random nature of the Moog sequences can sometimes lead to moments that feel less controlled or cohesive, which might be off-putting to some listeners. 4. **Homogeneity**: - While the album's cohesive sound is a strength, it can also be seen as a weakness, as the lack of distinct variation between tracks might make the album feel monotonous to some. ### Conclusion "Phaedra" by Tangerine Dream stands as a landmark album in the history of electronic music. Its innovative use of synthesizers, sequencers, and Mellotron created a new sonic landscape that has influenced countless artists and genres. The album's atmospheric and immersive qualities offer a deeply engaging listening experience, though its experimental nature and lack of traditional structures may present challenges for some listeners. Despite these potential drawbacks, "Phaedra" remains a timeless and influential work that continues to captivate and inspire nearly five decades after its release.
Лучшая песня - Movements of a Visionary.
Excellent cosmic space music. Not something I would listen to all the time as it requires a certain mood.
Unusual and captivating
Yea this is what I am here for. weird, trippy soundscapes. I'm in.
I really dig this... 4/5
Felt like I was in a spaceship for a while. Enjoyed it!
Tangerine is great and has put out a ton of excellent music over the years. This album is arguably their best and it's just a mood and vibe to get in to. Enjoyed revisiting it for sure.
Not my thing, but I’ll grade on a curve since this sound had to be pretty new in 1974
A repetitive swirling adventure that sometimes drifts to something darker. The title track certainly tells a strong story.
Shrooms.
great build-up but where was the drop
Nice for a chill Sunday around the house. Decent variety between tracks considering the genre.
Each song took me on a journey. It’s amazing when a song can make you stressed out, but the title track did it. Favorite songs were Phaedra and Movements of a Visionary
Great music to nothing and everything too. Chill and explorative. I’ll probably check out more from them
Wowsers, this was a blast. Can't imagine how hard this would have been to make with such cutting edge technology. I played this every day I for a week working out how to rate it. There isn't a 'killer track' on there but it but there is so much to explore. I'll keep it on rotation.
Weird, but I like it. It's like a musical story.
I just found some great work music. Very relaxing.
It is nice background music for other tasks, akin how you'd use lofi. Pretty unique
Listened to it—good ambient music. More melodic than a lot of the early electronic music I heard back in the 70s. Interesting suggestion—surprised it made it on this list, but hey, it’s supposed to broaden our musical exposure, and this one certainly did.
tangerine dream's phaedra is something very different! we've heard other electronic, ambient, or space-like albums before, but nothing quite like this. the music wasn't in-your-face loud but it envelopes you completely. it alternates between a bit of a thriller or calm stretches. truly a fascinating listen. as a side note, listening to this album on a walk outside was quite the adventure! the music came off as so surreal that it almost felt like i was in a virtual reality with this as my soundtrack.
Relaxing beats
I think my head would explode if I heard this back when it came out
I actually really like this. There were only 2 tracks on Spotify though. Not sure I would listen to a bunch of their stuff though. Can totally see why they are popular on soundtracks though
Has an uncertain feeling that holds up well 50 years later.
I had trouble believing this album was as old as it is. Seems the lineup has changed a lot over the years, but they have been really prolific. I'll listen to this group more for sure.
Very nice, spacey ambient album from the early 1970s, it must've been revolutionary at that time. I enjoyed it quite a lot and I'd like to listen to other albums by this band.
Nice spacey sounding electronic album. I wasn't excited when the first song was 17 minutes, but was surprised by how much I liked this.
Berlin Techno before the kick drum was discovered 4+/5
Very good, not the easiest to listen to in one sitting
Peaceful
Sequencer-driven epics that feel cinematic, shifting between eeire and calming. Hypnotic loops blast you off to the cosmos; kinda feels like the soundtrack for being at the planetarium on a field trip and watching the timeline of the universe.
feel like i'm going on an adventure, excellent stuff
A bit ethereal and trippy but a pretty nice background listen.
4.0
I generally like these guys, but hadn't heard this record. Promising. Glad it's included on the 1001.
Tangerine Dream were ahead of their time. Beautiful ambient record. There's something special about this era of ambient music. The 70s had this certain synth sound that hits different.
Sleepy and dreamy, with emphasis on the sleepy.
I’m sure I’ve heard some of this before as I had a roommate in college who was into Tangerine Dream. I also held a job where part of my duties were running the board for a New Age radio show in the 90s. Many a Sunday morning I struggled to remain awake to ethereal, New Age music (do we still use that term?). I enjoy this music. I played the album 5 times today, although I must admit that was because I kept dozing off as I listened to it. Even the cover art looks to me like an infant curled up in a blanket sleeping. I intend that as a compliment because it put me in a very relaxed place.
This quasi-futuristic music sounds vaguely familiar. So I soon realize it reminded me of the background music at Disney World in Tommorowland and Epcot. I like that atmospheric background stuff as it adds to the experience there so I liked this album especially as I had no idea going into it what it was. This would also be good music to hear in space whenever I go there. More likely it will be added to the next playlist for a long road trip, ideally timed to sunrise.
C+
Sounds like ambient sounds. Only 4 songs came from the album.
Really enjoyed this more than I expected. Just atmospheric so I didn't really have to or want to actively listen but good
Interesting simple early ambient, which was pleasantly enjoyable. A bit Jean Michele Jarre meats ambien works Aphex Twin.
Ambient music is fine, but cosmic ambient music is amazing!
A pioneering work of Electronic music. Soundscapes abound, some sweet sweet bass rearing its head and synths and moogs aplenty. Something to take mushrooms with, lay back and let it wash over you. Best Tracks: Phaedra; Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares
Kraftwerk tends to get a lot of credit for pioneering electronic music, and rightfully so, but people will often forget that there was an entire was an entire flavor of sound from Berlin. It focused heavily on multi-layered sequencers to create rich, ambient spaces akin to the likes of Krautrock. The synthesizer found a lot of use during the 1970's as it was an exciting new instrument, wild and begging to be tamed. You will not hear a single drum on this album, real or otherwise. Rhythms are subtle and developed using steady arpeggios. It is an extremely atmospheric piece of work, and if you don't like your music stretched out and spacey then you're not going to like this. But for Berlin in 1974, this broke ground. In truth, most of the good stuff is in the title track. Thankfully that's 17 minutes so you get a lot of good stuff. The rest of the album depends on your ability to tolerate a lot of electronic experimentation. Some stuff works, some stuff doesn't. I happen to enjoy this album enough that I would give it a hearty thumbs up, but I also recognize that it might be too weird for others.
Delicious space ambient.
Being a fan of electronic/ambient music, of course I have heard of Tangerine Dream, and I even know some of their later works. This album, however, had escaped my attention so far. I am glad that I found it, because it comprises of a classic, even prototypical electronic sound, which the likes of Kraftwerk, Jarre (especially - I can hear traits of Oxygene, Equinoxe and Magnetic Fields in this one album) and Vangelis obviously drew a lot of inspiration from. The soundscapes here are always interesting and layered, making for a very enjoyable listening experience. 4/5
This record has some great ambient music, the sounds are very ethereal. It is a beautiful soundtrack to passing work, what other purpose is there for this. Each song sounds sonic and alien, and I think that is beautiful. Favourites: Phaedra / Movements Of A Visionary
Weird, spacey, and very different. I was into this, although it's not something I would usually like.
I love love electronic music
The soundscape on a Tangerine Dream is always lovely, with really intricate and balanced synths, but I always feel like something is missing, especially in the overall form of each track, and the album in general. It's like sitting in a aural hot tub; a good place to chill, but don't expect it to take you on a journey
Epic, layered soundscapes and beautiful, layered melodies. The later 2 tracks aren't as detailed but this still ranks as one of the top ambient/prog albums.
Very deserved spot on this list. Also holds up very well for being such an early experiment with electronic music
Vilken namn+ album kover xombo...
Listening to first track Phaedra, it is really hard to believe this came out in 1974. This is some really experimental, early trance / ambient music. I haven't been focusing hard on this, but the atmosphere has been pretty tense all the way through. Super eerie with lots of layered effects. Feels sort of similar to the psych atmospheres that Pink Floyd has made in some of their lesser-structured pieces. I was heads down for the next two songs, but both sounded like solid atmospheric drones. Reminds me a bit of Fennesz, but way earlier and more moody (I think). The album rounds out with short, but sweet Sequent 'C'. I should probably go back and listen to this one again start to finish. This album was probably a bombshell at its time; hard to imagine many others were doing anything similar with electronic music. 4/5
Wibbily wibble wibble. Can definitely see how it would have been revolutionary it's day - kosmische indeed.
Baanbrekend, maar niet overal pakkend.
Nothing I would just sit down and listen to regularly, but great to work or concentrate to.
Schmetterling!
It’s clear this album is the inspiration for so many electronic music acts. It’s heavily experimental and psychedelic, while also being a bit more structured. I’m giving this 4 stars because while I don’t think I could personally listen to this album every day, it’s definitely an important album.
Matching the title track proves impossible; With synths as instruments, instruments as novel space, Tangerine Dream erect something mostly wished-for these days. Thankfully, there were also lessons well-taken in this album's wake.
This was cool, I want to remember this one. Straight up psychedelic electronic music.
The sound of scuba diving on acid.
This is what my leg hears when it falls asleep
Some of this early electronic music is absolutely mesmerizing to me. 1974??? Felt like I was in a movie soundscape for most of this. Could see this being used in like Bladerunner 2049 or some shit.
Nothing groundbreaking. Solid background music.
lovely stuff
Almost rated five but I’m setting a very high bar for 5s, blew my head off this can’t believe it was made in the 70s Last track is increddy, ambient before eno.
I didn't know I loved my stereo this much
Score: 80 Album art: 80 A beautiful soundscape album with a cold, otherworldly feel. It's very easy to imagine a story in your mind to match the music. A sense of hopelessness and loneliness with an extremely small touch of hope mixed in. Phaedra is the best track though and the most interesting, and if you didn't like it you won't like the rest of the album as it's basically just 1 40 minute long song. I imagined an explorer trapped on a cold alien planet seeking refuge only to die in the end. A lot of the little synthesizer plucks sound like little creatures or birds and it adds to that feeling. Favorite tracks: Phaedra No least favorites
Really cool sounding. It's interesting to hear the pioneers of ambient & electronic music. Definitely want to check out more of their stuff.
If TRON was a 37-minute movie, this album would be a perfect soundtrack and I can even see similarities between this and Daft Punk's score for the sequel. It sounds so futuristic, ethereal, and timeless all at the same time. It's not quite as powerful as Oxygene but it's definitely what I wished I got out of Kraftwerk's music. The first two tracks were the strongest.
Loved
Classic of the ambient genre
I enjoyed it. This was the precursor to all electronica music and it's interesting to hear.
Sweet
vay ahead of it's time
Interesting 4
Crazy to know it’s from 1973. Pretty enjoyable ambient-type sounds from very early in its origins. (prior listen)
This is the first album I needed to listen to elsewhere which is a shame because this is exactly the kind of record I'd like to be able to fit into a streaming rotation while working. Blissed-out space-pulses. Definitely a mood though.
Yep! Time to find out finally what these were all about. So it's not Krautrock. I like half of the first track, very atmospheric. 2nd track could be the soundtrack to Dune. Ok, all of that was so wonderfully chilled, I loved it. Was starting to feel pretty aggravated before I listened and now I feel much better.
I don't really have an objective way to judge these kinds of albums. They all sound the same to me, but somehow I like certain ones better than others. I liked this one but couldn't possibly say why.
Pretty cool
Great with headphones - the soundscape is almost 3D. I wasn't expecting to like it but was pleasantly surprised.
Good
Jako fora. Dijelovi me podsjećaju na sigur ros. Pogotovo prva pjesma
I first listened to this on a plane, thinking it to be perfect ambiance for a long flight but the amount of noise planes make really dampened the experience. It's way better to listen to this at night in silence, hearing the whooshes and nutty arpeggios. It's a really relaxing listen, though I like their more melodic material. This is going in my sleep playlist.
very ethereal, hints of what would become trance and DnB throughtout
Whoa. This was a fun trip. Need to be in the right mood for sure, though. Great background music but I don't think it's very much of an "active" listen.
these were some lovely soundscapes
Täähän on ihan naurettavan kovaa ambienttia. Nautin. Tosi hyvää ja unista. En osaa nimetä mitä kaipaisin lisää, mutten silti anna täysiä pongoja. 4/5
Todella kosminen tunnelma. Tekis mieli mennä nurtsille makaa tuijottaa taivaan syvyyksiin tätä kuunnellessa, niissä oloissa varmaan 5/5. Nyt oon valitettavasti toimistossa ja arvostan täältä. 4/5
Listened Before? N HEY! I know these guys! They did the soundtrack for Legend back in the 80s. This is good stuff, especially as far as electronic music goes. I loved it. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares
Bank robbing music
Really liked this album. A blend of ethereal sounds, electronic tunes, and noise.
Rating: 7/10
What you would think sounds like an Enya-esque inspired album, then realize this album came out in 1974! For the technology limitations compared between then and now, this album can easily be released today, and while not my normal choice for mood music, I'm interested. 3.5/5.
It’s nice, to be a little star-drop floating along the cosmic currents.
Very solid space ambient album. Really like it.
Fascinating album, especially when reading how this early electronic music was put together. There are several great passages, but at times I missed a bit of tension and structure. Maybe I need to listen to it more often, but Jarre's Oxygene, which came out only a few years later, was much more compelling/memorable.
Great focus music
Can you really expect a PNE supporter to like Blackpool? I was surprised how enjoyable this was. That sequencer sound is very good to listen to.
Blissed out and atmospheric genius. T.D. is really something special, it almost reminds of side B of Bowie's "Low" in its impeccable synth compositions.
Really enjoyed this. Sublime, dreamy and trippy electronica that sometimes made me feel I was watching some sort of sci fi film. Must try more of their music
I'm trying to re-imagine a sci-fi / aquatic setting wherein the queen has a thing for her stepson, and when he rejects her, she tells the king his son tried to rape her. The king believes his wife and banishes his son, who soon gets trampled by (sea)horses and dies. If you're sober, you need to bring something of your own to this album to give it claws. Just lie back on the sofa and close your eyes. Listen in complete silence, and it'll be like an underwater journey with lights flashing in the deep.
Hell yeah. This is exactly the kind of oddball stuff I like to find through a list like this. Never heard of this band, apparently they've been making music since the dawn of time and still are. The album is fantastic. Ambient, cinematic electronic music, as if from a lost Dune or Blade Runner movie. Love the four-track structure too, with some tracks coming in over 10-20 minutes. Give me less uninteresting copy-paste rock projects and more like this. This captivated me. Favorite tracks: Phaedra, Mysterious Semblance, Movements of a Visionary. Album art: Nothing too special, but it's a cool and mysterious shot to look at. 4.5/5
This is a striking album of gorgeously composed songs. The arrangements move from sparse to lush, peaceful to spacey, with sometimes eerie and menacing sounds, drawn together with some expert sequencing. Whatever you're doing, stop and just listen to this one without interruption. Fave Song: Phaedra
Wow another gem
Feels like the grandfather to house music. Great to have on in the background; not sure that I would ever be like, "time to sit down and do nothing so that I can focus entirely on Tangerine Dream"
The band's name was familiar to me already but for the life of me, I can't remember why. Maybe a friend liked them, not sure. Anyway, I don't recall having heard their music or even knowing what kind of music they make, so this is all very new to me. And I'm really glad I am now introduced to this band. Fascinating stuff, especially when I consider when they recorded this album. What sounds to our ears in the 2020s like music anyone with a MIDI instrument and a DAW could make in a matter of minutes, they produced with early 70s tech. This is, to state the obvious, no small feat. I will definitely listen to more of their work and read up on how they did it. So cool!
amazing that they came up with Uncut Gems soundtrack like 45 years before the movie! a strange ethereal echo-y soundscape held back by a somewhat weak 2nd track. 4.5/5
stunning album
Pretty good ambient electronic music. Very specific situations where I would enjoy this, but its perfect in those specific instances. Feels like a 3 musically, but I'll give a 4 for usefulness in focus-up music.
Great early electronic album with spaced out vibes to it. At times relaxing, and at others mildly creepy. Favorites: Phaedra, Movements Of A Visionary
I think I prefer their film work, this left me a liiiittle cold but it’s still competent. More of a 3.5
Begendim, ozellikle 2 numara baya guzel
One of Tangerine Dream's most popular, and by extension most influential, albums. In this kosmische masterpiece, we explore the innovative use of synthesizers and sequencers that would be further developed in krautrock to follow, later picked up by New Wave and soon the many electronic genres of the 80s and 90s. It is atmospheric giving the audience a feeling of wide open ambience and space that few others have been able to achieve. There is room to breathe in this album, a huge contrast to most other albums at the time which typically feel rushed from track to track. You have a track that takes up an entire side, but also a track that only lasts 2.5 minutes, and the others somewhere in between. These tracks take however much time they want, and due to how seamless they lie to each other, one is able to appreciate both the individual tracks alone and also the coherency of the album as a whole.
Crazy to know it’s from 1973. Pretty enjoyable ambient-type sounds from very early in its origins.
I was surprised to read that this is the only Tangerine Dream album on this list because I think their later work is better, eg Stratosfear, Cyclone and Force Majeure but I guess it’s because this album was highly influential and important in the annals of Krautrock and electronic music with the early use of sequencers. Also it’s interesting that along with Mike Oldfield, TD was one of the first bands that Richard Branson signed to his fledgling Virgin Records label.
really cool, atmospheric experience. a solid 4/5
I only know Tangerine Dream from their film scores, which rule. This album was really good.
Enjoyed this, who vibe i didn't know existed, got some Vangelis vibes from it too! Dunno if a total 4 as it did get a touch fatiguing towards the end..
Cool discovery. I knew the name but not much else. Pioneering like Kraftwerk. Same year as Autobahn. Mad lineup, more like a movement than a band. Music featured on Grand Theft Auto and Stranger Things. I actually really liked the music too. 8.5/10
Was much more interesting than I had expected. Must have sounded completely different from everything else in 1974.
I like ambient music also how was this made in the 70s
Quintessential kosmiche of Krautrock. Had heard this album before but it's been a few years. From the original 4 track version there is not a single dud, haven't listened to the deluxe yet. Remix sounds very modern, but I'd be curious of how the original sounds. Still a touchpoint for anyone doing soundscapes/ambient/space music.
Pretty cool early electronic music. Very ambient.
VERY cool soundscapes, great for working. Will check this band out more. Only got the last 2 (out of 4) tracks on Spotify, but I was impressed.
Not typically my type of music (70s German electronic!) but found myself more interested than I thought I'd be. Synthesisers at that time de-tuned themselves quickly as you played, and so they wrote this into the first song (Phaedra). The second was completed by the frontman (Edgar Froese) on his own one night with his wife recording and no other members. FFs: Soundtrack to Bandersnatch (Black Mirror); Froese and Bowie lived together for a spell and influenced each other.
This is like the perfect intersecting point of music for people who love the golden age of science fiction, and fucking stoners. Either way, you put this on your headphones and before you know it you'll be in another dimension, haha. Honestly, fuckin cool album. I like a bit of modern synthwave etc and you can see the start of that here I guess. It's not the sort of thing I could listen to day in day out, or even for more than an hour in one go really, but thankfully it only goes for 38min anyway. Or more to the point, it's not something I'd actively listen to - but I'd be more than happy for it to play in the background while I was working, gaming, etc. 4/5.
The album makes you realize that it was the Germans who, in the 70s, were the innovative ones when it came to music.
I'm sure this was monumental when it broke
Could not hear the full album. It was my Apple Music, but really enjoyed what I heard.
I have a really short attention span so ambient music doesn't usually do a lot for me. This was pretty decent though, even if it doesn't have a lot of replay value.
Very ambient, much euphoria. Wow. It was cool, I didn’t hate it. There’s some value in here to space out and just explore your mind.
While definetly a pioneering album in electronic ambient music I do think that the genre would get a bit more interesting down the line. That doesn't mean that this isn't good but maybe doesn't feel as ground breaking anymore.
One of the better electronic albums of the project. Nice, chill, ambient vibe.
Bleep. Bloop. Fart. Chillout music to program to.
What a sound, this feels like the pioneering space music that I hear in all space media. Like I swear I just hear the Satisfactory background music here, or maybe Mass Effect. But this is also hardly an album to just listen to. It feels it needs a scene or event to be set to, as listening to it straight up is very different from just about everything on this list. My favorite here was Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares. It's eerie, foreboding, and curious (and also half the length of Phaedra). I liked this album, and it feels important, even if it isn't really made for casual listening.
buena mierda
this is a cool piece of history. it's crazy to think it's so old and still sounds so modern! some parts are definitely more interesting and engaging than other, but i assume that's the point.
It's a very relaxing and truly beautiful album. I enjoyed it.
My wife said, "This sounds like music for a butterfly coming out of a cocoon."
Got some reading done while listening to this. Very chill. You kind of just let the music wash over you especially when wearing headphones. Not exactly something that's going in my rotation but I enjoyed it.
Interesting.
what was availabe was very nice
2deep4me somehow.
07/06/2026 It was obviously way ahead of its time... and I can appreciate that, but it was pretty boring. Spotify listeners: 393.7k
Very cool ambient music. Not too long (I’m talking about you, Logical Progression) and fun to listen to
It's not nearly close to be the best thing i've ever heard, but it got interesting the more you listened. It feels like good background music from a movie. Wasn't terrible.
That was certainly a thing I listened to.
Kinda feels like Pink Floyd inspired lo-fi. I'm sure it was cutting edge at the time, but i don't know if it really holds up.
First really experimental album here, pretty good for that.
Great atmospheric music, very well blended, incredibly cinematic no wonder they've done more than a few soundtracks. That being said, I won't reach for this record again.
Sure I’d listen to this wandering the desert at Burning Man. But on the bus to Scarborough- immediate snooze fest.
um, okay?
veru futuristic sounding, surprised this was from the early 70s; don't think i would return to it really; sort of stressed me out 3 stars
I feel nothing.
Do I know this band? Looks like I added their album Zeit to my streaming library on August 2nd, 2024 at 9:35 in the morning and never listened to it. I guess I don't.
I think if this was more modern, I'd be less impressed. It's nice, pleasant, longform ambient electronica that occasionally piques the interest but largely twiddles and bloops along in the background. For being made in 1974, you'd have to call it pretty bold; at this point even Eno wasn't really doing this, and the likes of Kraftwerk and Neu! are noticeably more immediate and beat-driven than this.
Perfectly pleasant mellow vibes.
Interesting? Annoying? I'm neutral
This album goes back to the early days of synthesizer music. Tangerine Dream is noted for starting German “cosmic music”. The album is relatively short and is totally instrumental (electronica). The music is easy to listen to and is another one of those which would be perfect for a museum or planetarium.
For an album that came out in 1974, this is remarkably ahead of its time. What we would call 'electronica' was just getting started and a lot of the technology was new. Listening to this now, it would not be surprising to have heard this same album come out any time from the 80s on. I wouldn't ever listen to this again but I can certainly see why it was important to include on the list. It's not my thing but it was fine to put on in the background this morning. 2.5/5
Its like Pink Floyd without the interesting bits
Atmospheric and chill. Seems really ahead of its time. It's relaxing and slightly unnerving at the same time.
I struggled with this, more because of todays business didnt suit the music. What i got was electronic classical music with space and waves of emotion. Im going to come back to this.
This record has you thinking that something’s bound to happen, but it ne’er will. In other words, it's cheaply suspenseful. That can be fun, & Phaedra is for the most part a soundtrack to a fun albeit odd, pretentious sci-fi film that was ne’er released, but it’s also lacking in bounce & humor, i.e., it’s not vital enuf to sustain our interest. Clearly composed w/ the whole universe in mind, it’s yet not as cosmic as Tangerine Dream conceived it to be. B/c its loops aren’t given much room to breathe or expand, the album is stuck in a palatial abyss that I don’t quite know what to do w/. Tho I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt - it’s certainly better than a lot of the prog it would go on to influence - it’s still no special or magical work of art. Pretty sterile.
There was some thing intriguing about it
A bit too abstract for me.
It would have been ok in a darkened planetarium, staring at some ambient floaty lights. As it was, it was just kind of...there. Honestly, halfway through the 2nd song, I thought my player had replayed the first track. It sounded way too similar. I get how influential this band was, and I'm sure I've heard some of their stuff at the right moment, and it was transcendent. As it was, I didn't hate it, but it didn't particularly move me either.
Weirdly this is not available in my region (UK) on Spotify or Apple Music so I had to listen on YouTube with ads. I enjoyed it but not sure when I would put it on again.
feels like I got transported to another world
Pretty good
Felt like I should have microdosed first
This absolutely needs a laser show paired with it. It's pretty boring without it.
War ganz nett
Quote hypnotic and meditative. Technically very clever for its time but it won’t replace Force Majeure as my favourite Tangerine Dream album. 3
ugh, what a fever dream of an album. has a certain weird appeal to it
One of the better electronic albums so far.
6.5/10
this is what they thought the future would sound like in the 70's
Interesting, trippy and probably ahead of its time
not the TD i would reach for
This is a nice enough listen. It works better as ambient music for me, even though I personally dont think it fully fits that definition. If I am listening to it with more focus, there's nothing that I really latch onto or find fascinating musically. It's just fine.
I wanted to like this more, it was good but not great.
Not a fan... well played though.
I found this album more interesting than enjoyable. I didn't dislike it, I think I just prefer the ambiance of birds chirping and a cold pitcher of beer shared between friends after a long hike to some mountain chalet to the ambience of this. It sure doesn't sound over fifty years old though. Thanks for serving me up another interesting nugget of music history in such an easily digestible format, generator. Three cabbages.
super chill
Epic shit for its time and certainly must be recognized, but I just can't give it more than 3 in 2026.
I am conflicted about this album: on one side I invited the ambient sounds and space-aged journey into the unknown offered here. It was a soundtrack into infinity. On the other hand, I don’t know what to do with it. I don’t believe outside of a film soundtrack I have heard anything like it. I could enjoy listening to it again, but I don’t know if I would notice the subtle nuances a second time or if the album would fade into background. At some point I my life I know I will return to this album. I just have no idea to what context or reasoning that will occur. The only certainty I have is, man, Germany in the ‘70s must have been one weird place!
Not all songs available in us
3/27/26. Nice ambient, atmospheric album. At first I was unsure, but it grabbed my attention and kept me interested throughout as I didn't know where the songs would end up. This is perfect music to relax to or while completing a task!
Áhugaverð plata. Gott early syntha sound.
I listened to this on the bus and it really made me zone out.
Quite strange to hear this kind of ambient music in the 1970s. Feels way ahead of its time unless this is a kind of music you enjoy. Could have came out in the 90s and it still would've felt new.
Puis vient l'errance spectrale avec Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares.
Stark trea.
speziell.
Not sure what to expect with this one. I think I’ve listened to later works with my dad. First track gives way to some supersonic highway type feelings. Really stunning to think this was done before the 80s. The rest of my notes disappeared but this was a fun one to commute to and a good precursor to a Project Hail Mary viewing later on. Not sure I’ll revisit without the influence of something…
The missing link between Pink Floyd and Flaming Lips? I like “soundscapes” well enough, but I like verse-chorus-verse more.
I like it, though not my favorite by them. More into epic synths, this sort of sounded like Plantasia.
It was fine. I feel like I need to give it more shots, likely in a chill environment where I'm high and want to relax.
Rv
I like Tangerine Dream - but you REALLY have to be in the mood to listen to them. Not bad though.
Chi centred. Energy flow through chakra
I didn't hate it. 2.5
240/1089 with absolutely no prior knowledge i saw the title, artist and cover and was excited, then i saw the tracklist and release year and i’m a little more sceptical it sounds kinda ahead of it’s time in a way? feels like 00s futurism which is pretty cool (and something i’m very much into) unfortunately the spotify album the link goes to is messed up with only 2 tracks showing (in the uk at least) but the deluxe version does have the 4 tracks in the right order plus 2 hours of other bits had a nice time listening to this, it’s quite a euphoric/relaxed ambient vibe which is lovely. 63/100
Very ambient and atmospheric. A great chill listen. This could easily be the soundtrack for a dramatic sci-fi movie. Favorite Track: Phaedra
Atmospheric, but in the grand scheme of all these albums, just mid
intimate kraut
#877. I think this is more interesting as an art concept than it is as music. As music, it just gets kind of boring after a while. 3/5: acceptable
Ethereal and groundbreaking. Good for a one time listen for most, and it feels like a new listening experience.
Good enough, not like a lot of excitement happens…
Unusually, I both really like this, and think it could be a lot better. Indeed, the remixes on the deluxe version are better, but it's the original I'm reviewing, and that is a three.
Ethereal! I bet Weyes Blood listened to this record, and I bet Tangerine Dream listened to Enya. It wasn't my thing, but I appreciated it. Creepy, haunting, calm. Good record, but a middling review from me! 5/10
overall this album was actually good. was skeptical at first, but liked it more and more as the album went on. definitely will listen to this again while doing yoga or homework 6/10
This is almost exactly what I think a band called “Tangerine Dream” would/should sound like. I listened to this one while I was working out, which is not optimal. I would also think Tangerine Dream would be a band from 1968 who play acoustic hippie rock with at least one song about the woods and/or mythical creatures. Alas, it is electronica art-rock with an album named after a Greek mythological creature. This album has great importance in the area of Berlin rock and electronica, so I can recognize that. This is one of those albums that I am happy to have heard it, but as long as I do not get into yoga, I am not sure when I would sit down and listen to it. Some of the songs sound like they were the inspiration for the theme music to Stranger Things and I am not sure if that is intentional or I'm reading too much into it. Enjoyable listen overall, even if it is not optimal to listen to it while working out.
You should really read the up on this one before writing it off as beep boop beep music. This is out there even by todays standards. Imagine listening to Phaedra in 1974. 3/5.
Liked this much more than I thought I would based on the description. Very good vibey background music.
Very atmospheric, lots of beeps and boops. Quite enjoyed it in the background, but shouldn't think it will ever be anything more than background music to me
Dreamy and synthetic
wilddddddddddddddddddddd, feels like tripping
I find this one difficult for me to rate. On the one hand, I can see the clear lasting impression they made in music, be it dance music, experimental, or motion picture soundtrack. This album feels like it should be backing a suspense/thriller/horror film. However, on the other hand, as an album in and of it's own, I had a very hard time listening to it. I found it too long, too boring, and too repetitive. My rating reflects my own enjoyment of the album for the most part, bumped a little for their impact on soundscapes and music. That being said, I am also not typically an electronic music lover. So, my rating is flawed.
Cool ambient music.
It’s kind of unbelievable this came out in 1974. The sound is modern, polished, and atmospheric. Whirling whooshes of sound, driving but ephemeral synth arpeggios, sounds like a sci-fi movie soundtrack but in a good way. While I don't often find myself in a situation where listening to something like this fits the vibe, it's still a good experience and I appreciate the artistry in ambient music like this.
Not sure what I remembered this band to sound like ...
Like it 3/5
Not much to say about this album, I enjoyed it but was a bit underwhelming (boring is too strong a word, but ??). Middle of the road 3/5 for me, could see myself going anywhere from 2-4 depending on the day
love ambient music !! 3.5
I respect the forefathers. It’s also pretty awesome that this is my album 808.
OK
I’ve don’t know much about Tangerine Dream, other than the fact that they were pioneers in electronic music, but that’s enough to make me look forward to reviewing this album. And after 1076 other albums, I finally get to review Phaedra at album number 1077. Here’s hoping that good things truly do come to those who wait! Phaedra was enjoyable to listen to, but I felt like this album was much more style than it was substance. I appreciate Tangerine Dream’s artistry on this record, but generally speaking, this album was so amorphous, that I found the actual music to be pretty forgettable. However, I enjoyed listening to this album, because Tangerine Dream pushed the boundaries of what could be music. These guys did a great job of showing how sequencers could be used to create some really beautiful and vivid sounds. While I do enjoy synthesizers and electronic music, I prefer a bit more melodic structure to what I’m listening to, and that’s why this album fell a bit flat with me.
A good album. You can the innovation in this album even if it might go on a bit long. 3/5
Absolute madness - a cross between Vangelis and a cut-scene from a 1980s space-based computer game. Glad I've heard it but unlikely that I will go back to it!
I guess this is the week for electronic German music. Das ist cool. This was vibey and ambient and I absolutely was not in the right headspace for it today but I still liked it. I think Sequent 'C' was my favourite song, and not just because it was only 2 mins and 22 seconds (though that was a factor in my enjoyment). This album really reminded me of some of the contemporary classical music I played and heard performed in music school.
Neat but I wouldn’t have missed it f u never heard this album.
Very peaceful and relaxing!
okay miss ambient noise… 10 min long first song
The consensus of opinion would seem to be that Phaedra is the best and most popular TD album. I would disagree and say that the live album Ricochet is better. Ricochet is the only TD album I possess. The reason being that in my view you really only need one TD album and Ricochet encompasses everything you want from TD. I must admit that given the fact that TD have released a shed load of albums I haven’t had the time or inclination to seriously give other albums a listen. But the evidence to my ears is that if you have heard one TD album you have heard them all. I do detect a slight difference between Ricochet and Phaedra. Ricochet displays more energy (probably due to it being a live recording) and rises itself above the hum and sleepiness of this album. But I do sometimes like that effect on an album. Usually when I reading in bed late at night as background noise and this album does that job admirably. 3/5 24/1/26
appreciate the electronic, but only so much i'm ever going to like this. but cool for Ram crowd.
Beautiful zen-like music, too bad half of the album is not available on Spotify. I listened to the entire album on YouTube instead of Spotify. It's funny to read the comments there. The music would be perfect for scaring people away. For once, I can appreciate it.
Goes hard in the morning
Early ambient work like Phaedra will always be an interesting topic for me. It's really cool to hear the soundscapes that people were making with very primordial equipment, though that limitation often leads to very similar-sounding releases. Phaedra is often considered the very beginning of the Berlin School of Experimental Electronica, and it certainly was foundational in developing ambient electronic genres during the mid-70s. It's simultaneously ignorable and intriguing, and definitely has a way of making you feel like you're floating while listening to it. I listened to this sober (this time around), but Tangerine Dream has a funny way of complimenting certain substances. The title track Phaedra is definitely the most interesting of these pieces, though the other tracks are compelling in their own regards. The atmospheres here are cold yet futuristic, like an alien civilization that gets snow year-round. There isn't a whole lot to unpack here, given the simplicity of the album, but for what it is and when it's from Phaedra is quite an experience. Its quality still holds up, though about anybody could make this album in about 2 hours nowadays.
No melody, no hooks - more moods and tones. Is it harder to write this and get people to listen or harder to write a song with a hook. I liken this to art that is just splatters or paint. A record to get high to. Reminds me of what we listened to in high school. Pretty sure it was called Kitaro. Time to go look that one up.
So chill
this was not what I was expecting. Is this the original electronica band?
Overall: 5/10 Before I look it up, I'm gonna guess that Tangerine Dream did some film scores at some point during their career. This totally fits in with the scores of Blade Runner or Dune. I'm pretty conflicted on how I feel about it if I'm being honest, I really love those film scores and the mood that they (and this) convey, but I don't enjoy them as much without the visuals. While listening to this, I just kept wishing there was a movie to watch to put all of this behind. In any case, there were moments I ended up really enjoying despite all of that, and this kind of electronic sound seems ahead of it's time. Fav Song: Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares
There's clear value and vision in this album. It's just not my cup of tea to listen to.
No. 334/1001 Phaedra 2/5 (3x) Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares 3/5 (2x) Movements of a Visionary 3/5 (2x) Sequent C 3/5 Average: 2,63 Ambient, ethereal electronic album. Interesting, but not something I would ever listen to again.
Really influential and it's very meditative and almost transcending to listen to. A lot had of music had been 'discovered' by the early 70's, but Tangerine Dream and other German artists managed to create some entirely new soundscapes around this time. However, as an album it's a bit of a hard listen. Not because it's unpleasant, but being a long Berlin-School album requires a different form of listening than a conventional album. You don't really pay attention, you just half tune in and ascend to some other place. I don't though. One man's crack is another man's wack or something.
Not a style I would likely go to in a pinch, but if in the right mood it's a good one.
My only exposure to Tangerine Dream is if they were involved in some soundtrack. That is really all this album sounds like is an electronic soundtrack. I am a huge fan of Progressive Rock, and know that you cant just listen to these albums once and get the whole picture. Thing is, I am not sure I was in the mood for a soundscape album, so I dont know when I will explore the band again. (Probably when they pop up on this list again)
I’m not sure what to rate this album because I’m not a connoisseur of ambient music, so I’ll give this a three. Nice and mellow, good for playing while you are having a nap.
Not my cup of tea I don’t mind their soundtracks like Sorcerer but I find it hard to endure listening to a whole album
Trippy
This was my first full Tangerine Dream album, having known and grown up with their TV and movie soundtracks. They made electronic sounds before the medium got taken over by an association with drugs, chaos, and shitty dance music. It was the very essence of experimentation, of playing something new. The problem of course with such things is that other key components of music get lost along the way. You can make as many nifty and cool sounds as you like, but if there's no emotion behind or in front of it, no melody, no message, what's the point? It's exploration for the sake of it. It's Colonialism for its own sake. It's Musk going to Mars just so he can be remembered as the first to do it. It's meaningless. Luckily, there are enough cool and nifty sounds here that it isn't a waste. You can tell the group is excited and dedicated. They want to make... something. Production wise, it's great. It doesn't sound dated. It's just... what's the point? You'll remember none of it after a single listen. So, it's not exactly the Street Hawk theme tune, but it's worth hearing.
Sounded great! Especially for an album for 74. Big 3!
If I could give this negative stars I would
