Love
A 90s masterpiece of sonic waves and lyrics.
5 Stars
9,5/10
An argument could be made for a lesser score on the basis of Pras and the fact that the Fugees never fully commit to a posture- are they criminals? Criminal-adjacent hoteps? Rastas? Are they chillin' or schemin'? Additionally, their is enough fat on the album that, had they anticipated the aftermath, they likely would have tightened it up a touch. That said, you are gonna be hard pressed to find an album that hits its vibe more cleanly, bobs your head more, and makes you wish that Lauryn hadn't been so integral as to quit the industry, because she shines here in ways that are hard to comprehend and have never been emulated and, like Ruth being backed by Mantle, Wyclef shows why his solo career soared as he comes on with cleverness and persona, The Beast aside. We all know the standout tracks, but the lesser ones still bump and the whole album is coherent enough to almost feel like there were discussions of a concept album that were forgotten by the fifth blunt. Still, this is Lauryn Hills show. We are here for her, but while we wait Wycleff hits some bangers over the fence line himself. And maybe, just maybe, as I age its his rendition of No Woman, No Cry that stands out the most to me. Where she gives the album heft, he gives it an emotional buoyancy that makes it perpetually hopeful. Singing about murder? Wyclef makes it hopeful. Singing about heartbreak? Wyclef makes it hopeful. Singing about political corruption? Wyclef makes it hopeful. That is a genuine gift that was taken for granted because Lauryn Hill is the definition of gift enbodied, and as such overshadows everything. Absolutely a classic.
Its just like hearing Kanye before Kanye was Kanye
Ah, nobody made hip hop like the Fugees. The tracks all have a lovely and unique arrangement of beats and samples, and the lyrical flows are unmatched. Of course Killing Me Softly With His Song and Ready or Not are fantastic tracks, but for another favorite of mine I'd say Fu-Gee-La or Zealots.
What a great hip-hop album to add! Ms. Lauryn Hill's vocals combined with the unique beats, definitely makes this album a genial treat.
Perhaps the best hip hop album I've heard, this album is full of excellent songs. Killing me softly, ready or not, no woman no cry, and fu-gee-la are all excellent tracks. There is some weird junk mixed in that breaks the pacing like the skit or cowboys, but even still the strengths here far outshine the weaknesses. It goes without saying that Lauryn Hill's voice is incredible, but even still just wow. Exceptional talent, truly generational.
Close to perfection
Yes. Yup. Uh huh. Know of them, have not listened to them. Everything you want it to be. And who’s the star of the show? I mean. It’s incredible how much Lauryn Hill stands out on this. I’m sure miseducation will show up on this list eventually. The whole thing is good, everyone on it is good, but damn is she good. The sound is dope, I love the reggae influence, and the lyricism is top tier. Want it on vinyl. Bad. God I love 90s hip hop.
Thoughts before listening: Very important record in 90s hip hop. I never owned this, but I was a big fan of Wyclef Jean's solo albums. This should be fun to listen to, and I will have tons of nostalgia for the hits I'm sure. Review: Yeah I am definitely enjoying this. The Fugees were a popular group that had a sound that more closely mirrored the more alternative, "cool" groups of the time. This is more De La Soul/A Tribe Called Quest than Master P/DMX. This means jazzy beats, soul and reggae influences (and very popular covers), more intelligent lyrics, etc. The group was short lived, with this being their 2nd and final release, but Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill would go on to put out equally as iconic solo albums soon after. I really enjoy this album and will give it 5-stars.
Incredible. True classic and one of my all-timers. Saved a song: Y RYM: N
I mean, just one of the best of the era and I think will live on as one of the best cover to cover albums of all time. It may actually be better today than it was the day it came out. The beats, the lyrics, the melodies, the flow. Just that good. 5.
I I bought this on release as a teenager and absolutely loved it, but it's been a good 20 years since I last listened to the whole thing. When this popped up today I thought there was no way that I would still like it as much as I used to. Turns out I do, it's an absolute classic. It's as fantastic now as it was back then.
#3 one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time, every song is great. ready or not and Fu-Ge-Laa are some all time classics imo
Wow, hearing this all together is insane.
Great fucking album. 90’s Rap & Hip Hop was the best. Yes, yes, there’s skits on it, I know, but that was the style at the time.
First album I ever bought.
92 / 5 stars
Great album. Never really explored this group too much, but 100% adding them to my list after this!
I was worried that I would disappoint my expectations and rate it less than the 5 that my nostalgia (and music critics at large) wants to give it. Nope, totally agree with the hype, in spite of some dated skits/interludes. So many classics, feels like every other song.
Like burger king you can have it your way
Should I slow down? No kid go faster This album is 30% responsible for why I speed
this was great! funky early rap? I really enjoyed it!
Canciones alegres que no sabía que necesitaba
A nineties rap album that actually aged well! And Lauryn Hill is divine.
4.5 stars I first picked up this album 13 years ago. Or streamed it. I was familiar with “Killing Me Softly” and “Ready or Not” and really loved each song as I listened. But I feel like the skits got annoying to me and I feel like I never made it much past “Killing Me Softly” or about halfway through. Like I honestly don’t think I listened to this whole album once even though I started the album maybe a dozen or more times, until listening for this. I even bought the vinyl a few years back and never went through it all (although it’s a double on vinyl and that can be a lot of work). So I knew I would enjoy this, but assumed it was a solid 4 or a high 3 star album. But as I went through it it’s very clearly a near perfect hip hop album. There are no flaws in the tracks. Even the weakest tracks are pretty good. All 3 MCs are skilled. I knew the “No Woman No Cry” cover from the radio or playlists but never made it sequentially there on the album, but it all flows well. I’d really say the biggest knock on the album, which is a bit of a theme for me with 90s hip hop records, is the skits. Just lose them! Really don’t need the minute long racist Chinese restaurant deal heading into the amazing “Fu-gee-la”. Maybe would be a perfect 5 without the skits.
Ahead of its time in so many ways. Ms. Lauryn Hill actually might be one of God's favourites cause what do you mean she has THAT VOICE and can rap circles round so many others?? Just the best. “Alright this is a Chinese restaurant, But like Burger King, have it your way” genuinely got me
Loved this album. Would recommend
One of the best albums i've ever heard to. There's no hit that you could race a 0 out of 10. (atleast not for me)
Getting all my lauryin hill needs
Up there with Jimi in the "What could have been?" category. And kind of similar in the degree of virtuosity and strangeness. A sound and a message that has never quite been matched in any subgenere of hip-hop, yet they influenced all of them. I'm way out of my depth pronouncing anything a "best of" in the hip hop category, but I'm quite sure this is the best of something.
Often imitated, never replicated!
5/29/26. Listened to this several times previously, still holds up as a classic for me. Really a movie for your ears and the wordplay/references are top notch. Also great sampling and instrumentation.
Know the album only by reputation and by the hits, so I expected I'd enjoy it, but it was way more musically diverse and interesting and consistently enjoyable. Yeah, we oughta get familiar with this album. 5/5.
Easy 5 for me. Banger hit, so creative in general. Lauryn Hill is incredible!
the beats are good as hell, is the thing. all three vocalists have a distinct style and excellent delivery, and the lyrics writing seems pretty solid too
relentless
Always a solid album Lauryn Hill forever always makes me stop and think how many mics do I drop on the daily not enough right?
It’s been a little while since I listened to this album the whole way through and I the version I have does not have the remixes at the end. I’d say they don’t add much to the overall record but still one of my favourite albums.
Album full of clever interpolations, unique flow, crazy rhymes, equally crazy sample flips (Zealots swings like fucking crazy) and generally great sampling cohesion. The only song that didn't hit was Ready or Not and I think only cuz I have so much fondness for the Delfonics original, it's hard to hear it in such a dramatic way. If the Delfonics version is The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, the Fugees version is that gritty reboot from a few years back. Bel Air? Something like that, some shit nobody wanted. So THAT interpolation didn't hit but all the others did. Plus other than that, the track is good just like all the others. Colecovision reference makes up for Ready or Not for me, so I'm thinking a 5. I've loved this album for years. Also sidenote there's a super deep hidden Schoolhouse Rock sample in here? The Blossom Dearie Figure 8 song? Oh fuck yeah man how could this not be a 5.
Solid album. The Roberta Flack song is a banger. Lauryn Hill is a talent. This one's up there with Wu Tang for hip hop albums I would revisit.
Another huge gap filled for me!
The record is incredible. The beats, the lyrics, the samples, the wordplay, the mix of genres. Its so much better than I thought it was going to be. It sounds like it came out in the 90s, but it also feels timeless. I really like the soul elements, but its the reggae and Bob Marley riffs that really connect me to this record.
Confident talent and banger after banger. Constant little things, the shout-out to Cindy Lauper was unexpected and fun. Fresh and unpredictable and talent bleeding off tracks. Fantastic
Bien.
Really really good
Amazing. Some slower points. Never expected to be this good
I mess with this, especially ready or not and the mask if memory serves. Lauryn Hill call me.
I’ve heard this before and I own it. This one brings back a lot of memories, it came out my first year of college and we listened to it all the time those first few years. I was dismissive of these guys at first because the radio and the MTVs only played their covers of Bob Marley and Roberta Flack, but then one of my roommates picked up the CD and I heard all the originals. Of course, the covers are good too. They didn’t overdo it on the skits and interludes (one more woulda been too much), I know nostalgia is a powerful drug but this is a really great album.
it might not be the best hiphop album oat and it definitely has some weaker moments, but it means so much to me truly and was my first hiphop album ever highlights: ready or not, fu-gee-la, family business, killing me softly, the score, manifest 4.5/5
Everythinggg about this album is just soooo good, the production, the flow, the lyrics are stunning, the vocals, the sampling is always on the mark, the references. Dog its just everythingggg is so good
Ironically, the singles are my least favorite tracks on this album. Still 5 stars
Every bit as good as remembered
another one of the best
Wow. I am disappointed that I’ve never listened to this album before this. I know the hits but damn have I been missing out. This may be a top album for me.
I love the vibe and they are so goooood
only bangers
love

Awesome blend of hip hop reggae and r&b sounds
Lauryn Hill is great.
Here it is; an album I've never heard of in my life from an artist I've also never heard of in my life. Another hidden gem has been discovered! Little did I know that Lauryn Hill had a career other than her solo work, and it's a shame this group only had two albums. A Perfect Score indeed! Favorite Track: "Ready Or Not".
Great beats, samples and lyrics. What else do you need? The Score has got very entertaining interludes that act as seamless segues between songs. Liked Songs Added: How Many Mics Ready Or Not Fu-Gee-La Killing Me Softly With His Song No Woman, No Cry Fu-Gee-La (Sly & Robbie Mix)
I've loved this album for a long time. It's a great listen. These artists all have their own hits too. Thanks for surfacing it in my life once again.
AMEEEEE.
5 estrellas pa the score
Their second album. Hip Hop. Lauryn Hill is a force of nature on this album. Her range vocally is amazing. The album has intelligent lyrics and cool beats. Ready Or Not, Fu-Gee-La, Killing Me Softly and the score are all highlights. One of the all time great albums in this genre.
Such a fun album. Lauryn Hill really stood out to me on this project. Her flow is so smooth and really provides a fresh contrast to the male voices.
Arranca con mucho flow en la intro, me gusta lo que pinta que se viene. Nono aura como entra de la intro al primer tema, parece un mismo tema. "Ready or Not" UFFF; "Fu-Gee-La" TEMON; "No Woman No Cry" AURA. Mucho floooow. Me encanta que a lo largo del disco van conectando con otros temas, temas que terminan y arrancan de corrido. Así es un disco que te hace vivirlo, así se hace un disco, correlativo. Me encanta. 100% recomendado, siento que por respeto a los señores albumes que hay, y para respetar los rangos. Tiene que ser un 8,5/10. Pero se va a llevar las 5 estrellas porque me encanto
Great work.
Still Classic
East Coast hip-hop, alternative hip-hop, progressive rap.
Wasn't entirely sure I'd heard music from The Fugees before, but then "Ready or Not" played I was transported to childhood instantly. Hill's vocals supported by that snare is both beautiful and now iconic; it's understandable why her debut solo album became so popular. The blend of new and old in "Zealots" was remarkable; instantly in love with it's beats, retro backing vocal sound supporting Hill, Jean and Michel. I wish more more rap/hip-hop would take a leaf here and make more tracks like this and Wu-Tang's Tearz. "The Beast" was a good song, not as strong as the others, but the skit was fun and most welcome as something that I haven't seen often in this journey. "Fu-Gee-La"s incredibly catchy chorus made it fun and easily repeatable. There is something to be said for the change up in the Refugee Camp Remix of this song, which was equally as enjoyable. The Sly & Robbie mix not so much for me. Then comes, arguably, one of their most popular tracks of all time in their cover of Perry Como's song, "Killing Me Softly With His Song", which helps to consolidate an overwhelming feeling I've had throughout listening to this whole album: Jean and Michel are great, but they've got nothing on Hill. Her vocals stand mountains above her peers; her cadence is the very thing that makes each of the Fugee's biggest tracks on this album stand tall from the rest, I feel. For reasons I can't describe, I really enjoyed "The Mask", it was just fun with slightly goofy lyrics and a more interesting backing musical composition, I guess. Their cover of "No Woman No Cry" was also great at being it's own whilst respecting the original. Overall, I enjoyed my time with this album. In light of this, it would be pertinent to me that I explore the solo works of each artist in this trio.

Okay, listen to me. This album? 10/10! 100/100! 1000/1000 I don't care I think it was phenomenal. The amount of samples that I recognized from other songs that originally came from here was wow, this album really carried the musical industry on its back
Hay muchas canciones que ya conocía y me encantaban pero no tenía idea de que pertenecían a este album. Me encantó y lo guardé en mi biblioteca
god this is great, godly deliveries and flows, ad libs and everything every verse is flawless, they make a great symbiosys or however you spell that in english constant fine ass references and sort of pseudo intelectual lyrics that weds perfectly with the funny punch lines the production knows when and how to keep it simple, they let the dynamic range to the vocals the lowest points are actually the covers but still feel this is gonna get a five
Fantastic listening experience, must listen!
gran album, it has the hits, the experimental sounds, the weird ones often i don’t enjoy rap but i can tell for sure that so far this is my fav rap album i’ll continue listening to it mostly when i go out for running
Masterclass in tasteful sampling
Oh my GOD!!! These instrumental are so STRANGE and NOISY!!!! Oh my GOD!!!! 666 CUT W.I.C. LIKE NEWT GINGRICH SUCKS DICK
let's GOOOOOOOOO. a classic in every sense. too bad most of the people involved lowk suck but tonite we're letting the #separating the #art from the #artist talk. everyone always talks about Lauryn hill's singing. we forget just how good she is at rapping. pras singlehandedly deciding to stop #stopasianhate makes it more 4.2-4.5. tis a great conundrum but we're gonna give it the full amount.
I don’t really know what to say, one of the best of all time. Lauryn Hill is just supreme. 100/5 Best Song: Ready Or Not
Legendary
Good grooves & constant, "Ooh yeah! This track!"
Until very recently The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was one of my collection of two hip hop albums and one of my top ten all time album list. Love her voice, the way she sits musically in the sweet spot of the sample, rapping or singing. But she's never put out another studio album, so why didn't I make the obvious move to check out The Fugees? Great album, great to hear more Ms. Hill.
Really cool. I think Lauryn Hill takes this to the next level for me. I really like her vocal tone and there's an effortlessness to her verses that draws me in. There are some very clever lines, interesting samples, and the flow is smooth throughout.
Ahhh this was really good. teetering on a 4/5 for me. I think the highs are just so good on this album that Ill give in. Those being Killing me softly with his love, Ready or not, The score and Fu Gee La. Love the melody progressions from Lauryn Hill, plus her bars are cleeeannnn. So clever, fun and flowy. 8.5/10 (Killing me softly is a 11/10 for me)

5 pour quelques morceaux magiques !
Good very good
cerdisimo, rap y r&b calidad pura,
Bought this album in the 90s and really only gave it a small chance. I’ve definitely been missing out. Great from beginning to end.
So, so good!! Loving the grooves on this, the lyrics and variation in sounds and singing.
Low 5. Incredible album carried by ms Lauryn hill. Featuring the greatest cover ever (killing me softly” although, I can’t stand the dudes at the end of each song rambling hood shit. Especially at the end of such a beautiful song like KMS. Like shut the fuck up and let her cook. Looking forward to the miseducation of Lauryn Hill so I don’t have to listen to those goobers. Apologies to my readers for the delayed reviews.
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘦 blends hip-hop with soul and reggae influences in a way that feels both natural and fully realized. The production is rich and varied, and the performances are consistently strong, giving the album a clear identity from start to finish. What stands out most is how effortlessly everything comes together. The songs are memorable on their own, yet the album never loses its flow or cohesion. It’s engaging throughout and avoids the unevenness that often affects records of this length. For me, this might be the best hip-hop album I’ve heard so far.
Super Dope
One of the best rap albums ever made. God Lauren Hill is so good.
Wow...this is as close to a perfect hiphop album as I have ever heard. Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel and Lauryn Hill's distinct vocal styles complement each other so well.
Don't think I've actually listened to this before, it's damn good.
Increible sonido. Bases boombap que te hacen cabecear, lo que busco siempre en el hip hop. Primer recomendacion oida y disfrutada, y si esto empieza asi es un viaje de ida.
Vraiment incroyable merci papa Ms Lauryn Hill quelle femme!! Top tracks: Killing Me Softly évidemment mais aussi Zealots et Fu-Gee-La <3
Truly iconic album. The message is worth the 5 stars.
amazing
During the golden age of hip hop, this was a standout album.
Great 90s hip hop. Smart, interesting rhyming, amazing soulful vocals, great production, unshowy beats, annoying skits.
how can you give this anything but 5 stars
Gear: Abyss DIANA MR Artwork: 🤵🖤✒️ Production: 😌👂🧈 Music: 🤌😎🎤 Rating: 💰💰💰💰(💰)/5
What a joy to revisit this classic album this morning. The interplay between Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel, and Lauryn Hill is lightning in a bottle and created one of the landmark albums of the 90s. There isn’t a bad song on the album (though some of the skits, especially the Chinese restaurant, have aged poorly). The lyrics are brilliant, political, self-referential, and deep. The beats and flow are so smooth and satisfying, and Lauryn is, of course, a generational talent. What can I say? I love this album.
loved loved loveddd
The bars hit so damn hard, and the production is just groundbreaking. This is nothing short of iconic - and everybody knows it.
Fantastic. Simply fantastic.
Ready or not Killing me softly
I’ve been stingy with giving out 5s but this is absolutely a 5 and I’m not sure I have many notes.
Lauryn, Wycleaf, and Praz are masterful on this one. Not much else to say. 8.75/10 Top song Sucker for the cover of no woman no cry.
One of the best
This is that New Jersey sound man I’ve always wanted to get this album but I’ve never had a time. I’m glad I found the time now it’s definitely you gotta listen to the whole thing and just keep it going in one city. I don’t know how strong the songs would be on its own besides for singles that everyone knows off this album as a full album experience. Hell yeah please give me more.
Interesting. What's going on. Bruce Lee?? Cowboys?? Wait this is so ahead of its time. It feels contemporary. This is so good I love Lauryn hill. Defecating on your mic. The samples used are beautiful the samples taken from this are artful loving this. And it's so dynamic the sound isn't just homogenous big fan of what's going on. This is just so interesting like it's a joy to listen to. Favourite: Fu-Gee-La Least Favourite: No Woman No Cry
What is this album not?
An album of bangers and also that one weird Chinese restaurant skit. Maybe I'm rating this too high out of nostalgia for Fugees, but I really liked this album.
okay okay, this is the kind of hiphop i like
That’s a 5.
gooooooood
Eeeek, I love this album. A mix of reggae, hip hop, and rock with political messages, yes please!
Total banger. Songs I know, songs I don't, all great. Some all time great songs in here. Loved it.
I mean, it really is that dang good. Gotta give it to them!
do not listen to miseducation of lauryn hill after listening to this masterpiece. tmolh is a mediocre MID album and is overrated. but this... this is a masterpiece man.
A personal favourite that I haven't heard in a while. Classic 90s hip-hop from the beats to the rhymes and references. My only gripe with this album is many skits that pop up throughout.
Herregud, for et perfekt album. Elsk. (Så lenge du ignorere en og anna av de der skit-an (som i sketsj, ikke shit), men det e kanskje en hiphopmarkør æ ikke har nokka forhold til. Kæm vet!
Sounded like an album they were making for 5 years until it was perfect. 4.9
A certified classic. Everything about the Fugees has been classic, but fleeting. The band only recorded two albums, and both are can't miss.
Iconic
90
A seminal album, every track complimented by each other and something I could listen to over and over again...and have
In a display of the cosmic connective power of music, I had actually just re-listened to this album last week, after getting the Temptations album "All Directions" from the generator that contains the sample on "Zealots." That small kismet aside, this is one of the best albums of all time. Certainly in the top five hip hop albums ever made. The production is sparse without being cold, the beats are futuristic while still retaining a lo-fi boom bap attitude. The lyrics are incredibly dense and referential, like all great hip hop projects you could peel the layers back on the lyrics for hundreds of listens and still catch new wordplay. Lauryn Hill is a generational talent, paired with Wyclef who is the coolest motherfucker in the world, and also a musical genius, and Pras who has some great verses and energy throughout this project. One thing I picked up on this time is how politically radical this album is, up there with RATM in terms of messaging and speaking truth to power. Much respect to the Fugees, I wish they had had more of an output but sometimes things burn so brightly they can't be kept alight for long. East 5/5 from me.
One of the best hip hop albums ever
god there's so much mastery here! with every track you can really tell they know what they're doing. it all just works. so fucking good
This album is effortless cool. One of my favorite albums before this project. I am so glad its on this list. The mixing is great, the lyrics are top notch, the vocals are clean, and this is nearly a perfect album for me.
ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME!!!!
As cool as the summer cool (and breeze). 5/5
Unreal
Did not expect Hip-Hop to be my first 5 stars, but honestly the unexpectedness played a part in the rating. I loved this album

This was so solid & such an easy listen
10/10 Favorites: Ready or Not Killing Me Softly with His Song No Woman, No Cry
love the reggae inspo
reminds me of my childhood no woman no cry 😭
Classic hip hop
Pretty stellar album. I wish Lauryn Hill made more than a single album solo.
Cutting. Lauren stepped into the room with something to say and as she left, mopped the floor with the collection of bottoms jaws.
Great lyrics and storytelling, politically aware, with great instrumentation and hooks. Sexy, sad, fun and very funny. Super well rounded, even songs you've heard a hundred times are irresistible.
One of a kind!
Masterpiece
legendary stuff, the preamble to one of the most iconic albums in hiphop.
This is a great album. Perfect 90s era hip hop album, although I could have done without the skits. Pretty much every song on the album was great, and of course Ready or Not, Killing Me Softly and Fu-Gee-La are all timers.
9/10. consistent production, intelligent lyricism, catchy hooks, stellar vocals performances. final song slightly outstays its welcome.
this was awesome, this group knows what they’re doing, no skips on this
Very good, alot of classic songs
This record sounds SO good. Smooth as hell, insanely good production, great flow. Lauryn Hill’s vocals are incredible. Beyond impressed with this record. Definitely outside my preferred genre to listen to, but any one who appreciates music should listen to this one.
Between a 4 and 5 on this. Some of the skits were a bit long but I don't think I can deny them a 5 in the year 2026. Lauryn Hill's voice is so good and I love the interplay between all the vocalists. The little 'doo doo doo' before the first sung verse of Killing Me Softly kills me every time.
I already knew the most famous tracks from this album, but hey, bangers always bang !

Good listening!
this was perfect actually
Alles banger. Vieles kennt man schon
ZOO WEE MAMA! amazing flow between songs with really good layering of sound that never felt too dense. i felt like i was walking in a big city while listening to this. wasn't a big fan of the skits, so next time i listen to this album ill just skip those parts! Such good classics in here. Wish i had discovered more of the fugees songs earlier. lauryn hill is quite obviously the main one in the group yet im not complaining since she's so talented. very soulful and had a nineties street feel. Loved the atmosphere, the songs genuinely felt cinematic. Every song was a banger except for the covers. Such good writing. No wonder this group is considered one of the most influential in hip hop. The album was definitely made to be listened to as a whole. 9/10 and I probably should round down because of the skits and covers but I genuinely enjoyed all the other songs so much
Diddnt think it would be my thing then I was overwhelmed by how amazing this was
Top album
The interludes/skits haven’t aged well but the music itself is catchy and fantastically produced with great vocals.
Phenomenal rap album. Hard hitting and musical.
я віжу лорен хіл я знаю што ето будєт пік
Sick nasty album. The vocals are sick, the beats are sick, the whole thing is just creative and varied but consistently so solid and fun to listen to. The production is great, the CLASSICS coming out of nowhere have me feeling like that gif of vince mcmahon falling backwards in the chair, what I'm saying is 9.4/10
Such an incredible album front to back. One of my faves of the ‘90s.
The lyricality, the influentiality, the cohesive wholeality of it all. The flowality, story telling, Lauryn Hillality of it all. The List mandate fulfillingality of it all. The sonic whorl of life affirming groovality of it all. FIVE
Classic hip hop album, All of them are really good tracks. If I had a fav it would probably be: Cowboys, the sample is just so good. I loved all the samples on the beats on this album. So good! 8.5/10
I love Lauryn Hill so much dude oh my GOD this is amazing. "Ready or Not," "Fu-Gee-La," fucking "Killing Me Softly With His Song"? Absolute no skips.
While I like Miseducation more, this album introduced me to Lauryn Hill. It's a classic.
9/10 – Great
This album feels like the sound of the 90s in a really true way. Genuinely hits so hard, the beats are so strong and it feels like Lauren Hill at her prime and it’s just such a confident. Killing me softly! That’s the anthem of the 90s! It just is.
A Classic
Love this album!!!
Amazing album, pity there was never any more
The Fugees – The Score The Score is a masterpiece that truly lives up to its name, operating as an immaculate "body of work" from start to finish. The production is top-tier, specifically the "immaculate" sample flips like the gold-standard use of ATCQ’s "Bonita Applebum." Lauryn Hill’s performance is a triumph; her vocal work on "Killing Me Softly" is peak musicianship, while her "rapping chemistry" with Wyclef on "Zealots" is world-class. From the "magnificent" energy of "No Woman, No Cry" to the underrated brilliance of the title track and the "funny" skits (especially the ending of "The Beast"), the album never misses. It all comes together on "Manifest," capping off a 5/5 experience that is both technically deep and incredibly high-energy.
Love this album. Even though I'm from "Gen-Z" I already know a good chunk of this album by having heard it throughout the years. Great stuff!
09/01/2025 1. red intro - like the choir in the back :) lyrics are reaaallly nice. like how the song titles are incorporated in them. 2. how many mics - love how the tracks fade into each other. love lauryn hill.... the lyrics are phenomenal! instrumentals/backing track didn't stand out, but the focus on the lyrics more than made up for it! 3. ready or not - not massive on the start, probably because the singing section has been used in sooo many adverts it's just become an advert song for me. her singing is reallly fantastic though!!! really loving the verses. *4. zealots - loving the sample at the start..... these lyrics are peak..... beat just dropped!! how can lauryn hill both rap and sing soooo wellll!!!!! *5. the beast - oooh the scratching at the start!!! immediately alllll the vocals are fantastic! the wordplay is insane in all these tracks............ what is this skit.... *6. fu-gee-la - bass at the beginning is nice.... loving this beat. lauryn hill's singing is incredible.... 7. family business - the guitar in this is reallly nice. reaally nice :) *8. killing me softly with his song - if you don't like this, kill yourself!!!! lauryn hill!!!! loving the organ and the sitar.... bass is great! 9. the score - liking the scratching again! lyrics are insane still :) *10. the mask - immediately liking the beat! the bass is aedwjfkm so goood!!!! loving the female touch hill adds to this album, especially with the more masculine 90s hip-hop scene..... loving the trumpet sampling. *11. cowboys - the sitar is back! yodelling? ralph bakshi reference!!!?? really great!!! 12. no woman, no cry - the guitar is a nice change up :) beat is a bit stomp-and-clap-esque for me... not the biggest fan of reggae, so didn't enjoy this one as much, but still really nice :) *13. manifest/outro - liking the intro... guitar is reallllly nice! scratching as well!! crazy lyrics <3 reaaaallllly loved this one :) lots of the reviews were complaining about the skits, but i think they're alright!!! the lyrics are absolutely insane, feel like i need to read a dictionary or something now.....
The Fugees album was on repeat when it came out... A major soundtrack of my teenage years!
PEPIIIIITEEEEEEEE
Compare and contrast with Moby's Play - fantastic, innovative use of samples, superior production throughout.
I really ended up liking this one.
Lauryn Hill is one of the best rappers ever. Period Full stop. Not one of the best female rappers, one of the best rappers ever. Not a single wasted bar here, where her brilliance is commonplace and taken for granted throughout this album. Her verse on How Many Mics is deadly … dropping ColecoVision and Deuteronomy in back to back lines, rhyming licorice with syphylis and callous with Dallas - intricacies and knowledge that make other rappers look foolish. Wyclef’s creative and layered approach is a perfect complement to Pras’s clean technical edginess in the production elements. While there are great songs throughout, the skits and interludes don’t really hold up 30 years later. Between that and the legendary douches that Wyclef and ‘Ms. Hill’ have developed into, I’m tempted to ‘score’ this album a 4. But it is too good to let those things pull it down. I can’t deny how amazing and unique these tracks are amongst the sea of sameness that was 90s rap.
It's a vibe.
Could listen to Lauryn Hill all day! Simpsons: Yes
Really liked it. A nice contrast to the last hip-hop album I listened to and gave a 1. Would definitely like to listen to more.
Already reviewed this one July 12, 2024: "How Many Mics has such a funky gangsta feel - loved that song. Ready or not - who doesn't like that song? The restaurant skit was funny as fuck and led straight into a bomb ass song. This album is an absolute classic and a must-listen if you are a fan of 90's hip-hop. Easy 5." Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the album if I was a 5 year old. Usually I'd be cracking a joke about how Lauryn Hill is a fraudster and the other bloke in the Fugees is currently rotting in jail for acting as a spy for a foreign government (which is fucking insane to think about). Still, banger.
How Many Mics // Ready or Not // Zealots // The Beast // Fu-Gee La // Killing Me Softly With His Song // No Woman, No Cry //
Amazing listen. Entertaining. Groovy. Lyrics were top notch. Lauryn Hill and Wycleaf Jean had great performances. Skit is funny. Perfect length for an album. 9/10
Super fun listen lots of classic hits and familiar samples
Why have I never listened to this all the way through!? Songs I knew sounded even better again, and the ones I heard for first time were amazing. What a voice!
So of course I've heard individual tracks off this record, but it's mainly been in the context of those end-of-year "best 1,000 songs since 1960" type radio shows, sandwiched between Oasis and Janis Joplin or whatever. It's completely different to listen to the whole album and really pay attention to it. Lauryn Hill's voice is both strong and beautiful (I like this version of "Killing Me Softly" better than the original), and the way the three of them work together makes every track imaginative and forceful. 5/5 stars for this one. The generator is turning me into a hip-hop fan! (I have to add that I'm happy to have finally heard the track that was sampled on that song that then ended up being redone as The Gilla Band's "Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage")
An absolute classic, I loved relistening to this! I enjoy the way the whole album flows together as a whole, the transitions between songs and little intros really make do an awesome full album listen.
So good.
I very much enjoyed this album listen! I’d never listened to a Fugees album in full but it was a great experience. I loved the mix of rap, reggae, soul, and R&B. ‘Ready or Not’ and ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song’ are standout tracks and probably the only songs I knew but this album is full of bangers. I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this album and I will be listening to this again soon!
If I could give this negative stars I would
poesia cantada
Approaching the 30th anniversary of The Score, this album cuts with the same sharpness it had in 1996.
Maybe a perfect album.
Beautiful
Ooh. One of those that change music. Lauren hill glitters. Wyclef Jean excels. 5
Déjà dans mon top +++++
one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time
Really good listened to this 3 times today, good references and samples
Brilliant album, I'm always impressed by Lauryn Hill, she can do it all and has such a unique flow
The first time I heard this album in the 90s I knew right away it was special. Still listening to it 30 years later.
Lauren Hill’s voice shines, the production is solid and the vibe is legendary. Still wish Pras had more bars, but amazing album!
Banging hip hop
Good
I do not know how I, a rap fan if not aficionado, missed the best-selling hiphop group album of all time. All I can tell the youngin’s is that back in the day we had to pay hard-earned cash for every album, so it was a major decision and a high-stakes gamble. I missed a lot. It’s a big reason I’m doing this project. This is a master class in 90s hiphop. The smooth flow, the Sunday afternoon of it all, the hard bits, the lyrical poetry, the social and political consciousness, the nods back to funk, soul, and formative rap. It’s fantastic. Even the problematic Chinese restaurant skit is a take on the ubiquitous badly-dubbed king fu movies of the 70s that our generation grew up with, and whose mythology figures largely in early hip-hop culture. These motherfuckers make Brooklyn feel like the coolest place on the planet, which it arguably was. And the talent of Lauryn and Wyclef, especially? Goddamn. 5 stars
Ancient denizens of the rap world. I've never heard of these guys but these bangs
Always been an iconic album!! Such a timeless statement album
Very good obviously. I forgot how great they are and here is this please surprise.
it's lit
One of my favorite albums of all time
Incredible. Ms. Lauryn Hill is one of one.
Oh that’s why people still wait for Lauryn Hill to show up to gigs
треки супер, переходы как я люблю, альбом отличный
Maybe it's just the knowledge of where the protagonists all ended up - Pras in prison, Lauryn on the edge of sanity, Wyclef giving keynotes at meetings of the Legion of Doom or some shit - but the tragic notes in this album feel especially tragic now. Perhaps that's to be expected as we all age (speaking as someone who grew up with this album). And perhaps it's an expression of what I hear more than anything else here - the paradox of youth, of being both incredible artists at the height of their creative powers and simultaneously powerless to transcend the personal and social circumstances that cultivated those gifts. I guess I can't do anything more than look back with some sadness - and gratitude that "Family Business" still slaps, "Ready or Not" still feels vital, "No Woman, No Cry" still wrestles the original to a draw. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, I guess.
Amazing
Ready or Not ist 10 von 10 Wert, auch wenn es nur gesampelt wurde.
Great lyricism!
Really solid, I was shocked at how much I recognized from this.
Solid album from start to finish.
This was massively successful in Switzerland when I was a teen - so I knew 4 singles already quite well. But listening as an album was something else: I never heard a more clever rhyming, the songs build a whole, Lauryn Hills singing is angelic. I listened to it in the train and half of it I was crying by the sheer beauty and the other half banging my head. A masterpiece.
I give The Score by Fugees a 5. So much fun. The instrumental harmonies uplift each track in a major way. I had heard “Ready or Not” before but I can’t believe I hadn’t heard anything else from this. The transitions between songs like “The Beast” and “Fu-Gee-La” are also incredible. The album rules and belongs in a cultural studies course about the 90s in America.
It's just so good.
So many great songs on this album outside of “Killing Me Softly” and “Ready or Not.” Even without those two, “Zealots,” “Fu-Gee-La,” and “The Score” would make this a 5/5. Unpopular opinion, but I really dislike the cover of “No Woman No Cry,” but the fact that the Fugees have funded a soup kitchen in Kingstown, Jamaica by crediting the owner as the original writer is awesome. And then “Manifest” comes in to save the album. Beautiful stuff.
Three decades later the bars, beats, and themes on this album still reign supreme. There aren’t many other hip-hop records as sharp or evergreen as this. Highlights: - Ms Lauryn Hill - Ms Lauryn Hill - Ms Lauryn Hill - Eat shit newt Gingrich - Star Wars mentioned - Ms Lauryn Hill I’m glad we got this after Ready To Die to hear the stark contrast, the Al Capone to Nina Simone. I think I’ll drop Biggie a star tbh, Fugees are the truth.
Amazing album. I originally rated this a 4/5 on 08/11/2025. After a re-listen, I'm bumping it up to 5/5 a few months later on 28/03/2026.
A peak of the hip hop genre that has aged better than almost any album from the period.
classic 90's hip hop/r and b
Lyricism, flows, and beats all on point here. Even the covers are fantastic. One of the best hip-hop albums of the 90s.
This album slaps! Well composed with some fun lyrics.
This album was a great weekend album. It’s too early in the morning to write out a full review lol
Fuckin awesome. I can't believe I've never listened to this album before. Might be a literally perfect album.
Remember this coming out and being a tiny bit mind blown. An awakening into a whole new genre for me, rnb, hip hop, social commentary and an education, set to complete bangers. Big shout out to Enya, only found out that was her sample on Ready or Not recently.
Forgot how much I love this album!
Great
An all time great album! Such a big part of growing up. I know the most two familiar songs on this album are covers, but wow!
Perfect mix of old school hip hop , rnb and jazz
One of the most inventive hip hop albums of the 90s, and really by extension, ever. Elite lyricism, always entertaining fusions with pop and reggae. And Lauryn Hill absolutely is the star of the show, with her seamless flow and silky R&B chops, no need to hire singers or pay for chorus samples. Not many groups out there repping north Jersey outside of organised crime but these guys did it so well, a shame they only put out two albums
Definitely a top 10 hip hop album for me and also this gets a nostalgia bump. There's like a song or two on the album I wouldn't mind skipping, but for the most part this is a set it and forget it album, which puts it in the 5 space. Went with some non-hits for the playlist: "Zealots" (great sampling in this one) and "The Mask" (very traditional late 90s hip hop vibe). Always fun to listen to and I listen to it pretty regularly!
Excellent hip hop album. no notes
I definitely have some hip hop blind spots. However, I am pleased to report that my eyes are now open to The Score. There's great flow, great beats, great singing; just great songs. Lauren Hill's performance on this album is mind blowing. Would recommend. Five stars.
wowie zowie!! this whole album is SLICK. like, it's consistent, it's chill, and - dare i say - it's cool. it was fun for me to have a couple of moments where i thought "oh, this is where that song is from?" had otherwise never listened to fugees before, but now i have, and i will be listening to more. highlights - how many mics, zealots, fu-gee-la, the score, the mask, cowboys
Cooler Flow und echt ikonische Songs dabei! Tolles Hip Hop Album mit ihren besten Tracks
Some listening notes
Absolutely quality - if hip hop still sounded like this I'd listen to a lot more of it.
Lauren Hill's performance on this album is mind blowing. Would recommend. Five stars.
Ms. Lauryn Hill's voice gives me chills every time I heard it. It's too bad fortune and fame got to her mental health the way it did.
LETS GOOOOOO
fantastic
A masterpiece of brilliant, fiery passion and intelligent execution. The stories of tragedy, love, heartbreak and violence highlight the realities of racism, colonialism and social inequities. I really enjoyed the rhythm, style and lack of sexism which unfortunately plagues a lot of hip hop. This is a listen again for sure.
We had this on CD back in the day. I never took time to listen to it properly. It's a good album. I had the displeasure of listening to the Lauryn Hill album on this list. I guess they were trying to recreate the vibe that was on this album and they failed massively in copying a great collection of original and cover songs along with the fillers that work. I'm adding it to my background music playlist and it is good. I think I'm going to give it a 5 as I really don't remember it being this good...
An absolute masterpiece!
Repeat listen
This is a major nostalgia for me. Have loved this album since it came out and listen to it at least a couple of times a year. Ready or Not is my jam and my karaoke song. The one thing I could do without is the interlude at the Chinese restaurant. Otherwise, yes please.
Classic! First time hearing it, but it's status is well deserved.
Classic. Still listen to it.
Great album!
I adore this album, which came out when I was living in New York City and was inescapable, booming from open windows and passing Jeeps. Unmistakably East Coast in its agrounding, it nevertheless arrived like a breath of fresh air, a mix of Caribbean traditions, clever rhymes, crisp beats and the force of nature that was Lauryn Hill. Though the group would prove short-lived, the strength of this album is how it melds three distinctive and outsize musical personas — Hill’s sass and melodic vocal talents, Wyclef’s strong Haitian sensibilities and Pras’ tough and underrated gravitas on the mic. I love the trippiness of the sample loops on songs like “Zealots” and “The Beast.” It’s a shame The Fugees disintegrated and its three members spun off into interpersonal and legal messes the way they did, but they managed to catch lightning in a bottle once, and that’s something.
This is so meaningful. I didn't know all the tracks and and I'm glad I listened to all of them now. Not the easiest album to listen to, but highly recommended.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
5 sterne
was really good super smooth
HEAT. Lauryn hill is generational why did she literally drop two albums and then vanish. Love the reggae stuff on here too. The cover of KMSWHS is an all time favorite god her voice gives me chills
Legendary
Very first Album I bought, amazing album! Still fantastic 30 years later!
How Many Stars Do This Get Daily I Say Many Many Many
LOVE
I think this just became my favorite rap album ever. Jesus it's so fucking good.
Amazing album. It's all very well done, and it amounts to one of the best hip hop records ever. Rap wise, they're all excellent here, interesting verses, stylish delivery and top-tier flows. Pras is arguably the most underrated, but he's always consistent and adds interesting flows to the group. Wyclef is great, he has a distinctive voice and writes very good verses. But the absolute standout here is Lauryn Hill. She's a remarkable rapper, her verses are very well written, she has so much style in her delivery, and she's such a good singer too. She definitely carries a big part of what makes The Fugees so good. The production is superb, the sampling is top-notch and the DJ/live parts make the album flow very well. The skits were pretty funny too. The best songs were "Ready Or Not", "Killing Me Softly", "How Many Mics" and "Family Business". The only song I didn't think was up to par was "No Woman, No Cry", as it isn't as good as the original, nor as good as the other songs in the album.
Bangers
A classic album, that is only held back from being perfect by its long run time. An hour and 15+ minutes is just a bit too long here, and the album could have benefited greatly from being tightened up by losing about 3 or 4 tracks. This album does have one of my favorite all time skits with the Chinese restaurant in the hood. It never fails to make me laugh. 4.5 / 5
exceptionally baller, no notes
This was an awesome one for my Friday. Really surprised how popular this was for how interesting and politically controversial parts of it must have been in the 90s, but then again the huge hits off this album don’t get into that. Regardless, very cool mix of rap with a little bit of reggae and some seriously inventive and clever bars.
Remember the other day when I said there are no albums better than OK Computer but there are albums on par with it? The Score is on par, an absolute perfect album. There is something particularly beautiful about three large egos and personalities coming together and creating one of the most cohesive and well-constructed albums of all time. For an album with a lot to say, a ton of risks (walking the line between corny and genuinely funny), and so many different types of flows and beats, I don't know how any creative differences were resolved without affecting the final product. The intro and the outro are perfect bookends. And amongst the silly skits ("not that michele leslie brown from 225th street that plays ball in the park, the OTHER michele leslie brown from 225th street that plays ball in the park"), they still have such impactful lines that pull you back to reality. People ask why Pulp Fiction and other Tarantino movies have such vile and punishing scenes that may it hard to watch, and it's because you're being punished for laughing at and enjoying a movie about gangsters and slaves. There has to be reality when you're making light of a serious situation, otherwise you have white people going crazy for mAAd city in the club having a good time talking about Compton turning a good kid into a killer. Contrasting a bopping banger like "Cowboys" , which is actually a really harrowing description of the culture of violent machismo amongst young black men in their hometowns, with the line "we crying for an afterlife while they just steal this one" is just perfect. 5/5, 10/10, 100/100 PS - Fuck Spotify for playing a clean version of this album for the first few songs, and mother fuck Columbia records for releasing a clean version. That's censorship.
THis was really good and I keep trying to write a review, but it's been too long since I wrote anything, so I'm just gonna give it 5 and keep going.
90's Hip Hop is something I have next to no experience with, so listening to The Score leaves such a high first impression that it makes me wanna go back to listen to this era of music. On first listen, I thought the intro was a bit weak and thought I wouldn't enjoy the rest, but upon a relisten, it may actually be one of my favs on the whole album. It references practically the whole album in one way or another, kinda like what you'd expect an Overture to do. Meanwhile the Score (song) does something similar, except rather than referencing, flat out samples these songs as a part of the main chorus instead. It gives a sense of interconnectivity to the album, like the Hip Hop equivalent of a Rock Opera. The skits throughout put on throughout the runtime are also pretty great, either serving as a nice transition between songs to keep the flow going, or just to break up the pace to show the artist's sense of humor, like reaching out to the listener to give a behind the scenes look at their personality. As for the songs, I'd say Ready or Not is my favorite, with Lauryn Hill practically stealing the show with her bridge each time. It’s possibly the definitive song on the album in my eyes, mainly because of how much it puts a Hip-Hop spin on a classic. No Woman No Cry and Killing Me Softly both being covers do something similar, but rather than making a new song off of retreaded old ground, they instead ad lib new parts to these songs instead to give it a new flare. All in all, this feels like an incredible jumping off point for this era in Hip-Hop, and one I'll be revisiting in the near future.
A buttery smooth blend of R&B, rap, and soul, this album deserves all the praise. Found myself bobbing my head during every song, even during Killing Me Softly (although I prefer the Roberta Flack version). These guys were at the top of their game in 96, there isn’t a bad song on here. I gotta get this one on vinyl. A rare 5/5 from me, it’s great and probably a top-10 album from the 1990s.
