Seriously one of the best albums of all time!
#reggae #chill #hiphop #90s #summer #vibes #4
Amazing.
NJ legends dishing out super smooth 90s hip-hop with crazy good chemistry between the 3 members. I read Questlove's memoir recently and he talked about how one day, the Fugees were opening for the Roots and soon enough, it was the opposite. The Fugees' penchant for pop songwriting (which the Roots were lacking) is clear through songs like "Killing Me Softly With His Song" and that's what led them to such quick success. But they also kill it when it comes to straight hip-hop tracks. The Bob Marley cover at the end of the album is cool, and I just learned that "Killing Me Softly" is a cover as well. The super twangy guitar samples on the last song are sick. Overall, this album is loaded with great rhyming and excellent head-bopping beats, it's a fantastic piece of art. Favorite Tracks: How Many Mics Zealots The Beast Family Business Killing Me Softly With His Song The Score The Mask Cowboys Manifest
This album has all of the great things I love about 90s hip hop, multiple people coming in and out with a satisfying groove we hardly see anymore, slightly over produced parts that grow on you, and weird dialogue (although I wouldn't miss the whole Chinese restaurant sketch). Also I know it's the expanded version now but Mista Mista is pretty bad, however I do like the fu gee la remixes. Favorite song I hadn't heard (Killing me softly is 10/10): The Score Very smooth, great verses, great beats 9/10
She's back! Did not know Ms. Lauryn Hill was a part of this, I am uneducated. Love an album with an intro and outro, songs flow into each other like butter. Makes an album feel like a beautiful little bundle. I enjoy the trio switching off verses, they compliment each other well. I always enjoy these albums more listening with headphones, the swirling backing tracks are truly dancing around my ears. I have a crush on Ms. Lauryn Hill. 90s R&B is elite. Was light head boppin through the whole album. I like how when one person is on the mic, the others chime in in the background, it feels natural like they're just riffing in the studio. Top songs: Red intro Ready or not Fu-Gee-La Killing me softly with his song
Of course I knew all of the hits but I would’ve never knew the b-sides were just as fire. I love Hip-Hop man, especially the production aspect of it. It’s always amazing to see how they flip records and make them bump in the headphones. This also makes me miss lyrics man, I know all rap isn’t lyricless now but it doesn’t hit the same. I think what I’m trying to say is that I like when music has a message. Of course I like the fun music to that you just dance to. But there’s something special about being able to convey your message in a unique artistic way. That’s what this album accomplishes so well to me. I also want to reiterate that these beats are absolutely insane. I haven’t stopped nodding my head since I pressed play.
I love this album so much and its been a love that has spanned decades at this point in my life! The Score is still on pretty regular rotation, 'Ready or Not' is one of my all time fave tracks - I used to listen to this track on repeat while lying in bed with headphones, Enya panning in the backing track blowing my lil' adolescent brain. The rapping is witty, intelligent, political and referential. While some of the skits between tracks haven't aged well, this in-between humour and/or leading into the next track feels like something that couldn't happen as much with the way we listen to music currently - its a storytelling tool that feels sadly missing these days. I'd give it 6 if I could! I wish they'd made more music together. Fave Tracks: Ready or Not and The Mask, Refugee Global mix of Fu-Gee-la
Only listened to 2/3 of it, but its still 5 stars even if the last 1/3 was just fart noises or something like that
one of the best albums i've heard in my entire life
You know if the guy serving you food is mean to you the meal boutta be fire
could have cried and nearly did
Every time I hear "You want beef?", this album comes to mind. It's a classic album with all good songs.
SO good. love the blend of r&b, hip-hop and reggae. lauryn hill's voice is unreal. top tier
Legendary one
Great flashback to my childhood. Love this album. “You want beef?”
One of my favorite albums of all time.
This is an excellent hip-hop/r'n'b album, that I enjoyed very much even if usually I'm not into this genre. The songs flow together so well, I didn't even realise this album was an hour long. Lauryn Hill has an amazing voice and she elevates this album for a close perfect one. This album has a very 90s urban street feel that I like. Shame that this trio split up after this album, what could have been had they stay togeter for a few more albums.
I mean yeah rap has been really hit or miss for me but fuck this one hit
Old school rap group at its absolute finest. A brilliant blend of hip hop and R&B that allows songs like Ready or Not, Zealots, and Fu- Gee-La to work right next to the amazing, transformational cover of Killing Me Softly With His Song. Lauryn Hill's vocals are the standout throughout the album, but nearly every track has something to offer from everyone involved.
Rating: 9.5/10. Perfect/close. Must-listen. Genre-defining. Genre: Hip hop So many hits. Ready or Not, Killing Me Softly. Iconic and transcendent.
The Platonic Form of Hip Hop. Lauryn Hill is hands down what elevates this album to a firm
Amazing! Inspo for a lot of musicians of 80s and 90s.
Klasyka klasyki
Не совсем мой стиль музыки, но почти каждый трек доставляет. Отличный, крепкий альбом. Понравилось.
So many good instrumentals. Great 90’s hip hop
Aged incredibly well
Classic hip hop
YESSSSSS i love how many mics omg????? wait taking iron gets u constipated?? rEADY OR NOT IS A FUGEES ORIGINAL?????IFMGHDFF DF OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGG i am so uncultured im sorry........smh. i fucking LOVE this album i need to buy the physical version
Totally blown away from this. I've heard some great hip-hop through this project, it's a genre I haven't experimented with enough and so I look forward to new albums when they come up. This feels like a pinnacle to me. Intelligent with rhythm, flow, and beats to match, almost every track just bleeds charisma. The singles are well known of course, but I found myself gravitating closer to other tracks.
Iconic.
great album
I really loved this album. only knew their popular songs but the whole thing is a work of art. Each song is basically a singed poem with pretty intricate and smart lyrics. A lot of the songs are really political on the condition of african americans in America, which makes the whole thing even more powerful.
Absolute gem
70/30
9.5/10 Very monumental album, had jazz elements from the production aspect of the album usage of drums and cymbals was really good, as it sets the narrative to a whole another level of expression from the group it's lyricism is top tier also overall a very good album for it's time
GOAT
so good
The trio sound great from the first bars whether singing or rapping. Production is varied and precise with middle eastern influence on a few tracks. Ready Or Not hits hard over a stripped down beat. Killing Me Softly is warm and intimate with its backing chorus and prominent bass. No Woman No Cry takes us in a different direction but somehow doesn't feel out of place. Then Lauryn Hill saves her best rapping for the last track. Deserves to be listened to from start to finish.
Best hip hop album ever? Possibly.
Wow, I rarely like hip-hop/rap but this is amazing. Lauryn Hill's voice is beautiful. I get goosebumps when I hear "Killing Me Softly". How did they achieve it? The album is diverse and forms a homogeneous whole at the same time.
This kicks ass. Perfect front to back.
Lauren Hill is queen. Love this album!
Must have!
Fire 5/5
Perfect
I haven’t listened in a while and I had so much fun and am just bowled over by how many classics are packed into this record. Could do without the skit but man this is ahead of its time and timeless.
Fire of an album. Happy to have found it
Unfassbar gut. All time Klassiker
I owned this album when it came out. It’s by far one of the best hip hop albums of the nineties in my opinion. A great listen for memories.
Yes! This is an album that deserves to be on the list for sure. 1996 and this still hits so hard. The blending of genres with these sick beats and rhymes and the voice of Lauryn Hill! 5 stars!
Top tier hip hop album, great music 10/10
Now this is real hip-hop album. No mumble rappers here…
This album is an absolute unit. The members and songs are justly well known. The lyrics are sensational, as well as the production. The whole thing has so much in your face class. It accomplishes everything it sets out to do so well. Just fucking lovely. 5/5
Much better now that high school is over and the annoying girls who played this all the time are far away. Now it’s very groovy
Lauryn Hill's crazy ass
No woman no cry is a devastating song. And the whole album is about black voices and how they've always been discriminated against, and how they have always dealt with it.
Chilling music, great
I did not listen to this album. I felt like listening to Black Sabbath's 1980 album Heaven and Hell so I listened to that instead. Fugees are good but the below score is for Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell.
OMG another favourite. They are rolling out these amazing records. Lauryn Hill is one of my favourite artists ever and her MTV unplugged album should be in this list. Love her here as part of the Fugees. This has rahe and humour. Amazing poetry this is an all timer!!
Awesome rap with Lauryn Hill. Creative backtracks. Awesome flows and smart wordplay. Seems inspirational to rappers like MF Doom. Very political too in a more positive way than other rap I've heard like this. Trio trades verses and have great chemistry.
Absolut classic
Clean as hell catchy ass beats, each rapper on this album has their own distinct style and flow but they all come together to create such a diverse sound (Ms Lauryn Hill EATS). The production on this album is also wonderful, the beats too are diverse from other albums from around this time, taking inspiration from jazz and reggae. This album also has a ton of social commentary for around the time, with lyrics and entire songs about racism and discrimination in America, violent crime, poverty, and toxic masculinity/gangster culture. I am sure this will not be the only time I hear Lauryn Hill during these 1001 albums, or even the Fugees in general. Even as a 17 year old white boy with no connection to any of these lyrics or themes, I can tell how much of an affect this album had when it came out.
Wow! I don't know how I managed to miss this, but this was perfection. Even the skits weren't too bad, although I can understand the hate for Chinese Restaurant. The only similarity I could think of was Cuban Linx, which was recorded at almost exactly the same time. I actually think this album is slightly better, more consistent maybe. The hits were a possibly the only low point, as some of them were a little overplayed at the time? This will go on heavy rotation for me now.
Amazing record, I had forgotten how good it is
Effortlessly cool and timeless. This was one of my favourite albums growing up and it withstood the test of time. Could maybe do with getting rid of the Chinese restaurant skit, but skits were just endemic in this period of rap and hip hop.
Excellent vibes.
Banger
Favorite Tracks: Ready or Not Zealots Killing Me Softly With His Song
Great!
A hip-hop classic that I don’t revisit as often as I should… I don’t see the point of all the skits, though that could be said for a lot of 90s rap albums. I’ll easily take pointless skits over sex skits tho. favs: Killing Me Softly, Ready Or Not, The Score, Manifest, Fu-Gee-La, Zealots least fav: not counting the Intro, the Outro or all the skits… The Beast ig?
An all time great rap album that sort of reset all the gangster rap and made everything a little bit more palatable.
So, so good. Pretty close to a perfect album.
Stupid (racist)skits aside, this is flawless
Oh my god man I forgot how fantastic this album is. Lauryn Hill is untouchable. The whole thing is so good there’s not a bad part on the album. You hear them all so well on the mix I love all the rapping and Ms Lauryn Hill can sing rap and do it all. Fantastic
I always like albums that have smooth transitions between tracks. It shows they worked hard to blend the songs even if all the songs sound different. Great lyrics, great voices, great beats. The female vocals were🔥some big hits on here. One of the best hip-hop albums I’ve heard on here. 9/10
Best hip hop album for non hip hop lovers.
One of my favorite albums ever!
I was pretty shocked at how timeless this record sounded in 2023. The writing is beyond relevant for today, but it's also sharp, quick and fucking clever. Not to mention the amount of massive hits it produced.
The Score melds intricate flows, knockout beats, and incisive lyrics into a hip-hop epic that still cuts as deep and sounds as smooth as it did in '96.
Se pudesse dar mais que 5 estrelas, eu daria... Foda demais. Obra de arte.
90s hiphop in essence.
mooie combo
Rating: 9.5/10 Classic hip-hop album. Incredibly strong lyrically and production-wise. Loved the interplay between all of the rappers, especially Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, it felt like they were battle rapping against each other for the entire album and never lost focus or steam. A lot of clever and humorous lyrics on here. Loved the dark undertone throughout the album, the singles are all fantastic and the rest of the songs are great as well, not a single bad moment on this album. Favorite songs: How Many Mics, Ready or Not, Fu-Gee-La, Family Business, Killing Me Softly With His Song, The Score, No Woman No Cry, The Mask, Manifest/Outro. Least favorite song: Cowboys.
Classic

Good stuff
Great
Awesome album.
Maybe it’s been a while since I really liked an album. I really like this one.
This is one of the first albums that got me into rap. I haven't heard it in a few years but it still holds up. I really like the sound, and I always thought the comments about "Lauryn Hill isn't a 'real' rapper, she's a singer-rapper" was just nonsense. She's great at both. I don't dislike any tracks, but Ready or Not and Killing Me Softly are my favorites. This album pairs nicely with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. If this is a 4.5, that is a 5.
In the ‘90s I was a ‘I like all music but rap and country’ snob. My two favorite radio stations were the tiny independent, college radio-like station that played lots of punk and indie music and the large corporate owned station that played alternative rock. The Score was huge enough that it crossed over to the latter station, where Killing Me Softly and No Woman, No Cry were kept in heavy rotation. The station also gave some time to Fu-Gee-La, making it one of the first rap songs I begrudgingly acknowledged as cool. I’m pretty sure I bought a copy of The Score a few years later, making it one of the first rap albums I owned. I wasn’t a full-blown hip-hop disciple yet— that wouldn’t come until the early to mid ‘00s— but this album started me down the path. The seeds were planted. I judge most music on how it hits me on an emotional level, and Fu-Gee-La still sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it. In fact, most of this album still hits hard, some of it out of pure nostalgia. Lauryn and Wyclef are both excellent— is there a better pair of rappers who can also sing?— while Pras, well, if there are too many MCs and not enough mics then we know who should be the first to go. Poor Pras. He’s not good, but he’s not bad enough to keep me from loving this, and at least he’s used sparingly. There are a few songs that aren’t as good as the others, mostly in the back half, though none of them are so bad that I have to skip them every time.
Big ups to Ms. Lauryn Hill for not giving af about any of her fans
Would you believe I’ve been listening to this album quite a bit lately? Maybe because Pras has been in the news over his upcoming imprisonment. Maybe just because this is one of the greatest fucking albums of all time. Anyway - who needs the excuse. The album is unassailable. Every track is enlightening, poetic, and brutal. Lauryn Hill is a treasure. Phenomenal piece of work here. Hats off to its inclusion on this list. 10/10 - would recommend.
This album is so smooth
Incredible. So captivating and interesting. Really makes me love rap again and hiphop again.
Great album. Some really enlightened lyrics combined with awesome sampling throughout. I thought the Chinese Restaurant Skit was incredibly well-done, and an awesome addition to the album. I can see why it was considered groundbreaking at the time, and it holds up well.
best album
Love this!!
Don't care how crazy Lauren is or that Pras is a narc, this album goes hard
Absolute banger. Three classic singles. Great verses and hooks on pretty much every track. The Chinese restaurant skit has aged...poorly.
This is a very good 90's hip hop and soul album. It's well-produced, the beats are great, and the rapping and lyricism is amazing. Lauryn Hill's contribution makes this one of the most interesting hip-hop albums ever, in my opinion. The skits unfortunately break the pace a bit - never really understood why pretty much every 90s hip hop album had to have them. I can look past it though, and they were kind of entertaining - I bet they had fun recording them. Regardless, I loved this album. It's pure vibes and I will absolutely come back to it. Favourite: Ready or Not
Solid, classic hip hop, and some beef rice with chicken wings
I really enjoyed this album. It was interesting to listen to it so close to The Chronic, not just in terms of East Coast-West Coast, but production styles and lyrical choices. There are a lot of pop culture references that I thought weren’t too vague, and because they were from across the decades it didn’t make it feel like this album was stuck in the 90s. I like the difference in vocals and rap styles between the three of them, and for an album that was over an hour long, it didn’t really feel like it dragged on.
The production and arrangements alone are worthy of 5 stars, but damn this record held up great. Truly deserving of the classic status it holds.
Iconic. Influential.
I had only heard the singles prior to now. This album fucking rules. These cuts are so much better in the context of the full album. Album saved.
perfect
too damn good
I LOVE THE FUGEES THANK YOU SO MUCH
finally some good fucking food
Unreal 90s hip hop at its finest.
CLASSIC hip hop album. Interlude sketches aside, this is loaded with songs that are still listened to today.
A masterclass in rap and hip hop hooks and samples, a classic!
Classic album. Really miss Lauryn Hill being in the music scene.
Ripper, awesome jazzy hip hop
Very mellow rhythms.
The album was a smooth and easy listen. Good rhythm and pacing. Several good lines throughout the tracks. Overall a good album and I would recommend it to others.
All songs super listenable and strong. Only knew 2 or 3 hits before this, glad to have listened to whole album.
Loved this album.
5. Wow, this is a good album. I haven't visited rap in a bit, but it does not let down.
Another solid classic!
Je connaissais pas très bien l'ancêtre du rap us
Fwooosh this was an absolute stunner of a listen. Never gone all the way through with it and I'm so glad I have. Even at around an hour it never gets old, the production so smooth and distinct, and all the members so complimentary to each other. I was following along with the lyrics all the way which is often hard for me to do, and they are consistently top notch. Only a single dud - No Woman No Cry doesn't offer much to the album and the interpolation doesn't really seem to fit the theme. (Also I see the words 'Includes Chinese Restaurant Skit' and shudder). Otherwise about flawless. V strong four and a half. Fave track: Ready or Not
ooh boy, this takes me back to freshman year in the dorms. In college getting introduced to new shit that and loving it. Mike was a filthy fuck but he had some good taste in music.
Classic album, the lyrics, the rhymes, the chilled music, variety, brings a smile on my face every time I hear this music. Such a shame this was their last album.
10/10 forgot about this one 🔥
This really is an outstanding album!
Amazing - seminal album. Beginning of new age of black music
Already listened to this.
10/10
LP
Smart thing about The Score is it does feel just like that - a score, with an overall mood and movements within, which change tempo and style but is cohesive and satisfying. This is, of course, quite common to a lot of albums, but a surprise for hip hop albums which can sometimes struggle as rappers experiment with different producers and guest artists. The production is top notch throughout and takes a different approach from - well from almost any contemporaries out there. No Dre, RZA, Master P or Puffy sound here - a smooth, soulful, guitar heavy sound, leaning on reggae and 70s soul (but with more polish than the Wu). There are times when the group stray into near straight up cover version territory - No Woman No Cry and Killing Me Softly run dangerously close to adding little to the originals - but there is something in the delivery and charisma of Wyclef and Lauryn that they just about get away with it. Let's talk Lauryn for a bit - what an incredible artist. What a voice. What potential? Of course, her first solo record was another classic but after that - not much at all. The potential here could have had us talking about Ms Hill as the Double GOAT - both singing AND rapping. Forget 'best female rapper', one of the best rappers to every do it. If only there was more, though, to burnish that legacy. Her wordplay and flow on Fu Gee La and Ready or Not is on point, hip hop quotable but with such depth you could right a whole thesis on their meaning and construction. This is my favourite Wyclef too - full of rage and fury and politics, kicking against the system, hustling for the next pay cheque and spitting fast and furious. Later laid back, wealthy Wyclef was cool too, but something changed when the hunger died. Also Pras is on this album (LOL). And yet, I might joke, but there's something about the album that wouldn't work with any one of them absent. It's a genuine classic, holds up on later listens and really captures a moment in pop music.
I love this era of hiphop. Good rhymes and politically aware
호호 ready or not을 진짜 자주 들을 때가 있었는데 첫 앨범부터 이 앨범이 나오다니 감격
I was so excited to see this album pop up on my computer. It was phenomenal, and every song was poignant and incredibly written. The references are phenomenal and keep you hooked. There's something for everyone. If I could give this album 10 stars I would.
Fuckin good
Strong memories to my childhood. Great album that ages incredibly well.
This is an absolute masterpiece of an album. Outstanding lyrics, beat, vocals, and huge hits, of which my personal favorite is "Ready or Not". 10/10.
Best produced hip-hop album yet. Aside from the borderline racist restaurant sketch, the tracks were a joy to listen. I did find myself wishing every voice was just Lauryn Hill
The style of this album is absolutely unique and phenomenal. Melodies and beats blend together with at times funky style of rapping from all members of Fugees. Three hits from The Score are still very fresh, and if released today, could have easily climb to #1 on any list in the World. I didn't know how good this album was until today. Just an amazing work of art.
Absolutely robbed during the '96 Grammy's by fucking CELINE DION! A classic, still holds up after 27 years. The beats, the rhymes, Lauren's vocals..it's perfect, not a single skip.
Massive singles and some solid features. The beats are from the sample-heavy 90s but the references are on point. The rhymes are real hip hop and the three MCs voices sound great together.
So this is a phenomenal album, but it really is one that you have to listen to all at once, at least until you get to the remixes at the end. The songs flow very coherently with each other and in a vacuum don't hold as much power as they do together.
An alternative hip hop classic. The beats are consistently spectacular and lend a really cohesive vibe to the whole album. The vocals are gorgeous and thematic throughout. Just straight fire.
Great album front to back. Lauryn Hill kills on every song shes ever been on and Proz and Wyclef have that classic hip hop flow that i love. I wish i could give more then 5
Yessssss, a classic 90s hip-hop album with the skits between songs, the laid back rap vibes and the warm addictive riffs!! It's a beauty! I love the samples on this album particularly on Ready or Not (a certified BANGER) where they sampled Enya, I think it's absolutely amazing that they didn't realise they needed to credit her and that she nearly sued them but decided to settle out of court when she realised that their music was really good and "not gangsta rap"! That's such a brilliant funny back story and I'm glad they figured it out in the end. Love the Fugees and Lauryn Hill in general, this is basically the only Fugees album as the first one was a flop but that's kind of nice in a way. It's just a really great snapshot in time and then they all moved on to other projects. Zealots is the sound of my early teenage years. Obviously it kind of goes without saying but such a soulful interesting version of Killing me Softly too.
Loved it. Fantastic album. I knew Fugees but I don't think I really realised what they were and definitely didn't realise it was Lauryn Hill. Really good stuff.
An album I own. Quality.
Wow
Classic
Discazo
Encore mieux que l'album solo de Lauryn hill, mais différent. Plus mon genre peut-etre ? En tout cas c'est assez bon. 5
Even if the only artifact from this album was Killing Me Softly, it would still be one of the best albums ever recorded. Their use of samples is at once surprising and completely natural. "Wow! That's amazing," while simultaneously sounding like the most obvious choice. The Mask hits real close to home these days.
Wonderful record with: great music, brilliant lyrics, phenomenal MCs, Bob Marley's "No Woman, No Cry" cover and one of my favourite songs of all time "Killing Me Softly with His Song". In the end, The Score by Fugees is a hip hop classic and a music masterpiece.
I'm glad I revisited this. Fucking magnum opus.
Truly flawless, landmark record. Lauren Hill is the #1 female MC no question, no argument. The Soul on this album is palable
Unfairly good
Super
One of my favourites. Amazing. Astounding. Wonderful. Beautiful. Ooh-la-la-la…
A seminal '90s album. I practically wore this CD out back in the day. The singles are excellent, and I'm also especially fond of "How Many Mics" and "Zealots," but the entire album is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. It's a shame that the skits are tacked onto the ends of the songs rather than being separate track, but that's my only complaint.
savršenstvo. jedan od najdražih hip hop albuma, i točno prije 3min čitam kako je Pras optužen na 10 stavki prijevare, e sad koliko će u zatvor ne znam. (to je ovaj desno skroz).
Hard hitting and progressive, essential east coast hip-hop.
Special, special album. Sometimes you can just feel the overwhelming talent in a performance, and this is one of those times. Favorite track: Zealots
reggae, rap, soul, top
Oh fuck yeah!!! I've heard this one many many times. What an amazing album!! Now THIS one takes me back to the good ol days. Killing me softly was on the radio a lot when I first moved back down here in 1995. But the whole album is really great!
One of my favorite hip-hop albums. Smooth beats throughout. Interesting lyrics. 4.5/5
One of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Every song is a banger. Lauren Hill flows exquisite. Even the skits are fun
Just an absolutely absurd amount of talent on this album. Was never not going to be a 5. Favorite track: Zealots
Very nice
amazing!!!
Fantastic beats with a nice blend of genres, the lyrics are awesome and Lauryn Hill elevates this album to 5 stars easily. What a singer/rapper!
This record is so good that Lauryn Hill is still touring it. Literally, she's still touring the songs on this record and it's still selling tickets. Wyclef spun this record and it's still maybe the best thing he's ever done. This record just exudes cool. Lauryn has something to say on this record. She lets everyone have it and I'm 100% here for it. The beats are boom-bap, which really let's the production stay pretty chill. That helps the vocals fill out the textures and the message stays front and center. I always think this record is "of a moment" when it comes up. But it holds up. This record still bangs. It holds up much better than I thought it would. If this record came out today, I'd still think it was awesome. It hasn't aged at all.
Ce genre de classique
Loved it.
Seminal 90s hip hop
Just a very impressive, quality record. Everything about the three of them clicks and sounds so smooth and casual. Love the covers as well! Only complaint would be that some of the songs lack a hook/chorus and I want one because all the others are so damn good! 9/10
Quite possibly my favourite album of all time. Laid-back, melodic, and filled to the brim with clever references.
Справжня класика, неймовірний альбом на століття вперед
This is one of the albums that got me into hip-hop, so I've probably got some bias! But yeah, I freaking love this album. Ready or Not, Fu-Gee-La, Family Business, Killing Me Softly With His Song... All freaking amazing songs. I ought to put this on more often. So good.
Can’t believe I’ve never heard this before. This is the best of old school rap - mcs just trading high quality bars. Rivals anything tribe has put out
Wat een klassieker! Elke seconde genoten van deze plaat. Ik wil hem al een tijdje op vinyl kopen en door deze keer luisteren heb ik besloten om hem dit weekend te halen. Ook heel fijn om weer even een banger te hebben!
It's just great. That's all
Full marks secured by the first notes of Ready or not. The rest is an excellent bonus.
Awesome!!! 5/5 🤑🤑
Played this album to death when it first came out, but hadn't listened to it all the way through for years. Thankfully it definitely stands the test of time. Great beats with some reggae spice, the wonderful voice of Lauren Hill, (and mercifully short skits).
Excellent beats, fun samples, catchy as hell. I can absolutely see why this is a classic. Will buy on vinyl. 5
Excellent
Hell yeah this album rules!
Very good
Did not expect to like this so much. Very smooth. Good mix of seriousness and goofy.
Favourite track(s): How Many Mics; Ready or Not; Killing Me Softly with His Song; The Score; Manifest/Outro To me, this kind of minimalist Hip Hop is just pure bliss. It's like a destilled form of the craft with a clear focus on the words delivered. Even so, the funky beats support them in the best way. while her rapping is already mesmerising, when Lauryn Hill switches on her vocal chords, the tracks become iconic. Some may even argue that they don't fit well onto the album. But to me the mix is just perfect. Really well made - will listen to this one time and time again.
I must admit I have listened to this album once before and I loved it then. Nothing has changed since then. Lauryn Hill is the centerpiece of this record. Wyclef and Pras also kick major ass on here. Ready or not is a great song. Fu gee la is another banger. Killing me softly is an all timer. No woman no cry is awesome. I cant believe they didnt stick together after this album. Awesome 9/10
The second (and final) Fugees album released in 1996. Album topped the "Top R&B/Hip-hop Albums" chart for eight weeks, becoming the longest running number one for a hip hop group, and also topped the 1996 year-end chart. Seven times platinum certified by RIAA. Top songs: Ready Or not, No Woman No Cry, Killing Me Softly With His Song (Roberta Flack cover).
Amazing album. Best skits.
Soulful, aggressive, and smooth. I'll never be half as cool as this album.
Sooo good, bars were fire
I remembered the hits and Lauryn Hill’s voice, but I forgot how much Pras and Wyclef Jean demolished the mic. And the crate-digging samples and beats? Wow. Obviously, highlighted in Killing Me Softly, the depth and creativity of sampling on the whole album was some of the best of the time. Also, props for throwing out a line about Guantanamo Bay in 1996.
J'avais des grosses attentes pour cet album et j'ai été aucunement déçu. C'est vraiment un excellent album
Good shit. Lauren is amazing
Loved that album when it came out in the middle 90ies. Still I love the energy, the elegance and the smoothness. And of course the political relevance.
Really great rap album. Loved the lyrics and different dynamics in each song
This was in heavy rotation back in high school. Still great after all these years.
A few classics, every song had me bopping along, overall great album
Lauren Hill on top form. Wyclef on top form. Pras on top form. Top production. Top lyrics. Even the interludes are good. Top album.
This is incredible. I don't recall ever listening to this in full before but all of it sound so familiar. Damn I love this deep sound 90's production. everyone is just on point. even if this was an average album, KSWHS would deserve a 5. amazing record. Wish I had this on vinyl.
Great easy R&B with some absolute classic bangers mixed in.
Amazing classic!!
Zeer goed album, begrijp nu zeker waar al de praise voor ms Lauryn Hill vandaan komt. Zeer goeie beat, goeie teksten, paar echte klassiekers, mooi samenhangend geheel.
There is a reason The Score is a classic. The Fugees tie in a reggae influence to east coast rap and R&B. This combo results the underrated songs "Zealots" and "No Woman, No Cry". On top of these, this album has massively popular and influential tunes such as "Killing Me Softly..." and "Ready or Not". The Fugees even experiment with a slight western influenced song "Cowboys". I genuinely enjoyed this project. You can still feel the influence of The Score through most contemporary rappers: From Kendrick Lamar and Little Sims to Brockhampton to Hamilton. This album is a classic. Best Songs: Ready or Not, Zealots, Fu-Gee-La, Killing Me Softly With His Song, The Mask, Cowboys Worst Songs: NA
The Score is an amazing album, with 3 of the best hip hop artists of all time. Seriously, this is a fantastic representation of the entire genre. Its got at least 4, maybe 5 number ones on the album. 5/5
2 times 2 times!
A really witty album with lots of great tracks and great instrumentation
Red Intro - 9/10 How Many Mics - 8/10 Ready or Not - 10/10 Zealots - 9/10 The Beast - 10/10 Fu-Gee-La - 10/10 Family Business - 9/10 Killing Me Softly With His Song - 10/10 The Score - 10/10 The Mask - 10/10 Cowboys - 8/10 No Woman, No Cry - 9/10 Manifest/Outro - 9/10 Mista Mista - 10/10
Another album linked to certain period where I watched a lot of music videos on MTV (particularly waiting for a carpool weekday mornings) and this - especially Ready Or Not - was dominating airtime. It is really top tier hip hop and holds a huge role in defining an era in its genre.
For sure deserves a spot on this list. While not my style this is executed perfectly
Absolute fire.
They did everything right.
First surprise hit of this project for me. It’s hard to even criticize this, maybe a couple dated lines and a corny skit? Lauryn Hill deserves every ounce of praise she’s gotten over the years.
the perfect score - some superb flow from l-boogie
I listen to this album regularly. It has to be one of the best hip hop ever made. I overlooked it for many years as I knew the hits from when I was a child and I didn't notice that they were great and might be part of a spectacular album. It's filled with clever rhymes delivered with a very satisfying and effortless flow. It rewards multiple listens with new discoveries each time and like all great albums it feels like a whole peice of work rather than just a collection of songs.
Flawless album. Can immediately listen to this again after finishing from start to finish.
Rap progresivo. Dos megahits. Vinilo.
To me this is hiphop at it's best thoughtfully insightful and with enough grit. Telling stories exposing pr3djustice and challenging the status quo. All 3 rappers bring their A game. Its the balance between killing me softly and ready or not, such amazing craftsmanship. And the beats and bass are enough to drive down town with your windows open. Some of the songs still make the hairs on my neck stand up.
what can you even say
Rap progresivo. Dos megahits. Vinilo.
Listening to this is like getting your teeth into some culture, like a soft cheese urge. I felt like I was listening to a very tight knit family
Very powerful. Very angry. Very assured. One track flows through to another with a killer beat. Feel like I shouldn't be listening to this and allowed to enjoy this but it's so so good.
I have enjoyed this album since its release. There is still a lot that I really love here...but I probably wouldn't love it as much now, if this was my first listen. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean...I am a big fan of both!!
Excellent hip-hop. L Hill's voice is to die for.
It's really nice to have a female voice after all the male hip-hop/rap groups we've heard. Lots of great rhymes and fun references scattered throughout. Some nice musical sampling. And the really great cover of "Killing Me Softly With His Song." Not all fun and games with a lot of topical subjects. I enjoyed this quite a bit.
A classic through and through
What the Fugees are putting out isn't quite what I gravitate to: For example, I remember listening to Lauryn Hill's solo album and bouncing off the reported greatness somewhat. For a few tracks, I was worried the same thing happened here, but it sounds so current, with such spacious and interesting beats, that I can't help but be sucked in. On top of the contemporary sound, there's the insane influence this album has had. On plenty that I don't love, sure, but the source is on another level.
One listen to The Score by Fugees and you would immediately understand why. Why, for the past twenty-five plus years, fans of hip-hop and all genres of music essentially clamor for any crumb of material from the trio that turned everything upside down with their sophomore masterstroke. In a time where alienation, coastal divide and violence reined supreme, three MCs took it upon themselves to not only step up to the best of them but obliterate any doubt in the process. The Score is, perhaps, the prime example of lightning in a bottle; a moment in time that can neither be duplicated nor repeated. And, with that, you will understand why.
This is an incredibly produced album. Most of that was done by the group itself. I never understood why they were called Fugees until you listen to the theme of the album.
Lauryn Hill’s insane vocals and production skills make The Score one of the all-time great hip hop albums. 5 stars
Flawless.
Great album
Forgot to listen yesterday so no big review, but I loved this album
I must have owned this cd 20 times. What a perfect hip hop album. Never gets old
Essential Hip Hop
A higlight in hip-hop, I’d say
Maan... banger album och det funkr så bra som helhet.... jag älskar så gott som allt med det!
I had heard a song or two, some samples and a bunch of references but never listened to a whole album. This is right up my alley, though. The social commentary here is almost 30 years old and still holds up. Lauryn Hill is a poet warrior goddess. The Newt Gingrich dunk made me laugh out loud alone in my apartment. That Chinese restaurant skit is an instant classic. Phenomenal album, will be returning.
loved it already
👌 clássico
classic
o hip hop é foda
This is the type of album that for better or worse hugely influenced everything that came after it, still soulful and great, love it
One of the all time great hip hop albums. Lauryn Hill is the stand out in this masterpiece.
Holy cow - first time hearing this record. I’m so lucky to get to experience it brand new, but also so sad I haven’t had this in my life for so long.
A true treasure!
Geeente, julgando pela capa, já passou uma super vibe Muy buenoooo!
Adore Lauryn Hill and the nonstop bops of this album. I’m not a skit girl and some of them activated my fight or flight but didn’t take away from how much this album slaps
Muito bom!
Pure nostalgia. I'm pretty sure The Score was my intro to Hip-Hop (or at least Wyclef, Lauryn and Pras). // I play my enemies like a game of chess //
Aight this thing doesnt need to tell me to listen to The Score. Absolute classic that has never left my rotation.
They stepped up for their 2nd album. Great production, lyrics and flow
Incredible hip hop album. Now one of my favorites of all-time.
Classic.
I listened to Blunted on Reality first in preparation and I thought that was such a cool album - 10/10 favorite song was Vocab, what cool instrumentals for an old school hip hop song and now I just finished The Score and I think it’s crazy how they managed to make an even better album than before this is also a banger 10/10 over the tragically short discography of Fugees has some of the best production, verses, and overall execution of any old school rap I’ve ever heard would highly recommend you hear these two great albums i’m gonna try to look for any other stuff they’ve made also a huge plus is that you can hear a woman that can actually rap, and she raps damn good
Best!
5/5 - love this album
nice
Great album
Sooooo ducking good
Nice lil album
Great album, nice to listen to in one go
A modern classic. 6 stars.
this was my go to album in secondary school when it was the in thing for everyone to listen to rap music. i got the reverend to put it on once on a long car journey and it was at that point that i realised the levels of choice language in it. the outro did not go down well. this is a hell of a lot better than i remember it being.
Was tempted to give this a 1 star review purely to spite them for their tardiness in turning up for gigs. But then it's so, so good. It's in the top 10, maybe top 5, hip hop albums of all time in my very humble opinion. Ms. Hill is criminally underrated as a rapper too. Maybe that's because she's a woman, or maybe it's because she never turns up to her fucking shows on time.
After 150+ albums there have been many that I've been familiar with and a handful or so that I've owned but this is the first that I knew every second of, back and forth. I love this album. I really enjoyed and had sentimental ties to the first Fugees album and remember the anticipation for The Score. It exceeded all expectations by miles and for me it is a top ten hip-hop album of the 90s if not all-time. Dynamic production in a variety of styles, intelligent and purposeful lyrics, and great interaction and balance between group members. Everything that Lauryn does on this album is remarkable - vocals and lyrics. While Killing Me Softly does stick out a bit from the rest of the album it is also beautiful in it's simplicity and still adds value to the whole album that already has a classic hit on almost every other track. The in-between songs are also strong without exception and there's no filler. My only criticism would be with the skits but they tie together and preview the upcoming songs along with keeping with the style of groups like ATCQ, De La Soul, etc. The album is a great transition and contrast from the more violent and vulgar hip-hop that was popular in the mid-90s. The sound still holds up today, 25 years later. I've listened through this dozens of times and would every time, any time without hesitation. It's unfortunate that this would be their last album as a group but they nailed it and secured an absolute all-timer.
Lyrics+music+sound is just chefs kiss
Classic. Fuck the outro.
Yo-da-lay-heeeee… Impressive production by the Fugees. Plenty of engaging tracks which more than make up for the less gripping ones. I’m not gonna pretend I’ve yet caught or processed even a quarter of the lyrics, but there are some great beats and sweet reggae fusion. Five bags of popcorn.
Amazing
I've listened to album a bunch over my life. Personally, I wasn't quite sure how to rate it. I was thinking it was maybe a 4, but I've had so much fun and enjoyment out of this album that it is a true classic to me.
This was awesome!
An absolute classic
the production and the vibe of this is stellar. great rapping and vocals, and all the performers work really well together. My biggest criticism is that the skits slow down the momentum, and the album didn’t feel super cohesive. 9/10
Really great album. Slightly long but the beats, lyrics, vocals, and hooks are all so good. 9/10
I don't know the last time I had listened to this album start to finish and it was so much more than I remember it being. This definitely belongs on the list.
Cant give 10 stars
Incredible. Sad that it would be impossible to stay up late enough to see Lauren hill now.
Masterpiece. Some of the best songs of the decade are on here. Lauryn Hill is a GENIUS!!!
Great Album
Rating: 10/10
Brilliant. Full of great songs. Worth powering through some of the weirder skits but just par for the course at the time I guess.
Amazing mood and lyrics.
For me, this album just encapsulates all the goodness of 90s R&B
this shit go hard
Ya lo conocia y es excelente
Album art: 2
Amazing. Never heard it before and will definitely get a lot more runs. Loved it.
Love the vocals from Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean in this album. Very unique and loved the samples that were used. Very iconic songs and very comforting. This album had an almost edgy-like feel to it. Highly recommend listening to it.
From the get-go one of the greatest hip hop albums I've ever heard. Absolutely blown away.
Historic, influential, landmark.
This was played so much growing up.
Makes me want to wander the streets of a large city, drinking in all the sights, sounds, smells, and feels. The reggae tones are vibrant. I'm now reminiscing about my early days when I first discovered Marley.
Didn’t get all the way through it but it’s an album I’m familiar enough with. Stone cold classic
