This album is a showcase for the early 80s pop sound. But even more than this, Prince has come up with some really good songs, among them the title track, which is a timeless classic and almost worth the price of admission alone. This album really deserves to be here. 4/5

I mean, come on, it's Prince! You've got awesome vocals, some fantastic guitar, and lyrics that, while controversial at the time, are still great to this day. I've heard Purple Rain and When Doves Cry before, and it was such a joy to relive them after not hearing them in so long. I felt like I'd been missing out on the others as well! Prince has legend status for a reason, and this album proves exactly why.
It's Purple Rain. Kinda impossible not to love. Don't even need to expect anything else. There's a reason for why it's as acclaimed as it is. Let's Go Crazy Amazing iconic intro. Fast and fun with lovely synths, a blazing guitar solo and a catchy chorus. Great vocal performance with a lot of style and feeling. Great. 4.5/5 Take Me with You Love the group vocals. Has some cinematic qualities (in a cheesy 80's way). Love the drama and the exaggartion. Great strings. Good. 4/5 The Beautiful Ones Great production. Love the subtle piano. Very of the time, but still quite charming. Impressive vocals. Powerful ascension to the climax. Great. 4.5/5 Computer Blue Interesting structure. Love the guitar solo. Very interesting instrumentation overall. Really like the bounciness of the drum beat. Prince delivers his usual strange but impressive performance. Good. 4/5 Darling Nikki Weird lyrics. I like the more rock oriented instrumentation. The keys almost have an orchestral quality to them, due to their loudness and intensity. Good. 4/5 When Doves Cry Classic. Love the synths. Iconic vocal melody. Extremely catchy chorus. Overall just an inescapable song with a lot of energy abd charisma. One of those songs that get stuck in you head for hours after. Fantastic. 5/5 I Would Die 4 U Great atmospheric instrumental. Love the electronics. The almost rap like vocal sections are quite different from anything else on this album. Varied vocal performance showing a lot of control and creativity. Great. 4.5/5 Baby I'm A Star Danceable and fast. Fantastic energy. Feels sort of triumphant, especially with the indescribably fun vocal performance. Great. 4.5/5 Purple Rain Opus. There's very little to say about this that hasn't been said. One of the most iconic songs of the era, yet still timeless. Magnificent. 5/5 It's rare for an album to live up to its reputation. Purple Rain is one of them, providing great entertainment from start to finish. While the title track is the definite highlight, each track comes with its own style and personality. It's produced and performed immaculately without a single hiccup. Its consistency and flow is almost unmatched. There's very little to say about it as it is almost flawless. 5/5
Classic album that I was waiting for to be on here! Probably my favorite Piece album, so many bangers on here and the movie wasn't half bad either!

This is an incredible album! This is seriously one of the most inspirational albums of all time. People will call this Prince’s best album, just because of the amount of fame it got, but honestly, in my opinion, it’s not. Still a great album, but it’s not worth the hype that people give it that often. It’s an incredible album though.
By June 25, 1984, Prince was no longer with Denise Matthews, a woman whose history and eyes would seemingly aid in shaping all of his creative output until his untimely passing. Before its release he had already moved on from Purple Rain by January of that very year, beginning Around the World In A Day long before his most mainstream work went platinum. It almost seems like everything to Prince-- the music, the fashion, the people-- was a project he needed to expunge from his system the moment it stuck around too long. If you couldn't tell it almost feels impossible at times for me to listen to Purple Rain (or any Prince album for the matter) without thinking of the context within which it was fashioned, but I figured today was a good opportunity to take Purple Rain for what it was; no film plot, no drama, nothing but the music. It is far from my favorite Prince album. There are many songs (and iterations of those placed on this final track listing) created during this stretch of time that I would have preferred to see the (official) light of day while he was still with us. It makes me terribly sad that this album, reflective of such a singular and easily consumable period in Prince's life, is what most people think of when they hear his name. For this reason Purple Rain is most often reserved for putting on the CD during a long car ride. This time around I put on my nice headphones, set the EQ to something neutral, closed my eyes, and rode the purple wave for its entire duration. Nothing exciting revealed itself in this ~100th listen, beyond some sneaky little giggles and finger snaps that give the impression that Prince indeed was a human being. But what it did impart upon me was this infectious positivity. You cannot listen to any song off of Purple Rain without feeling some level of whimsy tickling your soul, even if you don't particularly like this brand of cheesy pop music. Thank u P for all the love you poured into these perfectly imperfect albums

It was ok. Never did care much for Prince when this was very popular but it has aged fairly well and I even added When Doves Cry to my workout playlist as the bpm is a pretty rapid 125.

I was expecting more from this. I probably last listened to this when I was 10 years old in 1985. It was good, but not amazing. 2 sensational songs in among some okay songs. Those 2 songs alone give this album a 4 though. I feel it maybe needs another listen, so i will definitely listen to it again
Among panic attacks of post punk swung pop, direct to the point of comical ballads – “It’s in your eyes. What can I say? They turn me on” – and onanistic set piece fantasies that seem to revolve around innumerable promiscuous kinks you can find Prince; alternately luxuriating in a crushed velvet morass of gentle synthesisers, or rubbing himself up against columns of abrasive, spiked treble. The Prince of Purple Rain has it all and then a bit more; a characteristic excess that muddies the distinction between director and voyeur (if ever there was one) at the best of times, but probably never more so than here. Even if the movie it was attached to has largely, over the past 40+ years, lapsed into curiosity territory, Purple Rain the album succeeds in delivering something equally capable of thrilling both multiplex punters and adult cinema devotees. The best songs here transcend their context entirely, catching down a delicate melancholy that feels far more anxious than its author might consciously allow: what if she doesn’t want me back, or worse … what if the wanting was all I ever wanted? Without myself wanting to give too much away – mystery constituting an element of seduction that feels lacking from Purple Rain at times – it’s a star for each of the times I feel like Prince has, on this record, perfected the art of the pop song. Libido – profligate, insatiable, eternal, ashamed – is a complicated thing. Purple Rain must rank among its most trenchant exegeses; certainly its most charismatic.
I've always put off listening to this one in its entirety. Very boppy, enjoyed it a lot, but maybe it's not catchy in the way that it would pop into my head randomly (not that that's the mark of a good song or album). My favorite moments were the wild full-on screams. Also, the infamous Darling Nikki wasn't as scandalous as I was hoping. Favorite track: When Doves Cry

It’s ok, not quite sure if it gets to good. The best of the three Prince albums I’ve had so far on the list, not least in part that it doesn’t go on forever. The singles are part of the cultural wallpaper, but aside from that nothing is amazing. He could sure as shit play guitar, though.

Purple Rain is certainly a darn amazing album. This is my third (maybe fourth) time hearing a film soundtrack from this project (after both Air's Virgin Suicides, and Curtis Mayfield's Superfly and kinda Barry Adamson's Moss Side Story) but i can safely say that this is easily the best of the bunch. I also think its Prince's best album due to pretty much combining the best parts of both Sign 'O' The Times and 1999 without any of their issues. Every guitar riff is great, the vocals are something to behold and it is produced beautifully. I don't believe i can think of any issue that this album even has so it is getting a full 5 stars from me. 8/10 A great pop album. The man was obsessed, and that is to it's detriment, but I guess it was one of his defining qualities, so what are you gonna do. Musically it is funky and upbeat. I don't love any of the tracks but equally I like all of it. Just please get him a cold shower.
With Purple Rain, Prince became a superstar...deservedly so. Here, for the first time, he achieved an almost perfect blend of rock, pop, funk and soul. 1999 already had outstanding songs, but Purple Rain is all of a piece. However, it is not his masterpiece...that came 3 years later.

When it's good, it's very very good. When it's bad, we'll throw in a guitar solo. The 80s production lets it down badly in places. It is singular, it is Prince in all his glory, and it's flawed. Hallelujah.

i mean come on. prince feels on some kind of shortlist for people who just Got Music, more than anyone else has ever gotten it. bringing together gut-level groove and rhythmic ideas with all-timer melodic sensibilities and ideas for production/arrangement/timbre...not to mention SINGING! theres just a richness to his music thats near impossible to find elsewhere...honestly something that kept popping up in my head is stevie wonder , who has similar strengths despite the massive difference in style, and is also clearly on that same shortlist. i suppose if theres a big contrast to be made its that stevie's peak runs on a kind of meticulous perfectionism...prince achieves perfection thru pure freeflowing messy energy. the whole universe is somewhere in each of these songs...pop's most illustrious and transcendental cathedral, an album about love so all-encompassing in the Types of love it depicts to their highest extent that it makes u wonder why we even still try to write about it. so much Pure Feeling that its amazing that i, too, can experience it, in and out of this record...something here thats available to all, out in the world. ive mentioned the concept of the imperial pop record before, and of records in that category, this is likely the very very best. and its not even my favorite prince album....fuckkkkkkk man
Great album with some filler
Prince is an Artist (hehe sorry) that I’ve always respected more than I’ve loved for his music. I say this in relative terms to the general public… I’m no fool and I think Prince is objectively great, and as a guitarist alone he was a prodigious talent even before accounting for his other musical gifts as a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter. It’s just that most of his output is not my cup of tea. This is not true of Purple Rain. This is a masterpiece, an easy 5 star, timeless album. It’s great from beginning to its marvelous end. Can’t add anything else that hasn’t already been written here.

It’s confident, horny, and impossibly cool. The hits are undeniable, just iconic start to finish, but the surprise is how strong the whole album is. Even the filler wears high heels and kicks ass. Think Michael Jackson’s Bad if it was a little nastier and a lot more purple. No one else could pull this off, not then, not now. I know it's controversial, I'm just not a fan of Prince Don't get me wrong, I know how insanely talented he was, and as an artist, he is nothing but impressive. But I find a lot of his songs dated and somewhat boring, was hoping that listening to this album from start to finish might help me see the appeal! But if anything, I felt more of the same, also listening to Purple Rain the song for the first time in a long time, it's just a song I do not like in any shape or form!

Feels a bit like blasphemy to think this about anything Prince was involved in, but I was underwhelmed by this album. You can hear in his voice how Prince would give a great live performance, but outside of his energy, I didn't feel like there was anything special that I would actively want to listen to again. Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, and I Would Die 4 U are all pretty good 80s hits, but they can't compare to Thriller or even Kate Bush.

I know the hits on the album. I know the movie. The songs that I really didn't care for felt like filler songs for the movie. In fact I could picture the scenes as they played....and it didn't make it any less cheesy. Because of the hits, I rate it higher than a 3.

This album is a bop! Great party anthems at the start. “Let’s go crazy”, “when doves cry”, “darling Nicki”. Purple rain is Prince’s stairway to heaven.

This is a great album. It's unapologetically 80s in its sound, and when it gets a bit dull Prince whacks in a ridiculous guitar riff to bolster its defenses. I'll listen to it again on headphones.
Not bad but very 80s. Feel like the synthesiser was very overused and sounded a bit grating.
Read a band interview recently where they talked about trying to avoid songs becoming "overcooked", where they neurotically tinkered with songs to the point they sounded worse for it. Prince is the, er, King at overcooking. The songs on here were a lot better than the previous album we had but would have been far better if he hadn't thrown every idea and variation at them. They didn't need the extra verse or the outro with the slightly different melody. Needlessly padding the runtime and making it harder to listen to. I didn't hate this album but it was frustrating and annoying which would make it very hard to listen to again.
The problem with reading reviews from others in the group is that they often make a compelling argument. I was ready to give this a 4 - I love When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain, and the rest was diverting enough - but Jamie is absolutely right. The average track length is just under 5 minutes (Purple Rain is rather responsible for this). The worst song on the album is 2m49s, and has a constant cymbal march which raised my blood pressure. Every single song, bar none, should have ended a minute before they actually do. If he wants to fanny about, he should save it for the tour. A lot of it is overthought - having said that, a score of 2 feels harsh, given When Doves Cry and Purple Rain are undoubtedly listenable.
After the last prince album we had I kinda thought maybe that just wasn't a great one and the next would be better..... But, after this one, which I assume is considered his best, I think I can conclude that I'm just not a prince fan. I've seen videos of him and he was clearly an incredible guitarist and musician, but the music doesn't do it for me. Purple rain is the best track, when doves cry is ok. Prince is at the peak of his powers on this one. Let's Go Crazy is my favorite Prince song, and Purple Rain might be his overall best song. Came close to 5, but a couple of the songs on this are pretty skippable to me.

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Darling Nikki, Purple Rain, Computer Blue This album was... fine? Is that a controversial opinion? I was kind of expecting something much more groundbreaking, powerful, culturally prominent. This is Prince's _Purple Rain_ after all! Maybe it was groundbreaking in 1984, but today, listening to it now, it hasn't moved me much. The only track I found to be particularly eyebrow raising (and part of the reason I liked it) was Darling Nikki. I can see that track being exceptionally questionable and "transgressive" in 1984.
Upon a couple more listens "Purple Rain" honestly grew on me quite a bit, it was definitely a matter of being in the right mood & scenario to really get the vibe of the record, I just had to be in the right mood, & listening to this record in a dimly lit room on a Friday night was the PERFECT setting for this record, this album is silky smooth as hell & it hit me just right with its funky synths & guitars & of course Prince's seductive vocals & lyrics, everything about it on every track works, the production also exemplifies all of the smooth funk of the record perfectly, I love this album, I liked it before, but now it hit me to the point where I really love it, amazing record, one of the best for sure.

I have a lot of respect for Prince as an artist, and I can see how talented he is. That being said, I just don’t find myself enjoying his music all that much. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t really grab me. There are some groovy parts here and there that catch my ear, but they don’t last long enough to hold my attention.
This album takes everything that's good about 80's over the top cheesy pop, rock music and soul and puts it all into a melting pot. Catchy hooks, melodies and earworms everywhere. But underneath that pop surface it's just really great music. I bet there will be more little bits and pieces I pick up on with multiple listens too. Prince oozes charisma when he sings and I absolutely love when he screams the really high notes. He can't half play a guitar solo either. It's just full of solid tracks. The opener 'Let's Go Crazy' is a fast foot tapper, 'The Beautiful Ones' slows things down and builds to the aforementioned trademark Prince screams and 'Computer Blues' is essentially a 90 second song followed by a 2 and a half minute guitar solo. It's metal as hell. Speaking of metal. 'Darling Nikki' has a really heavy and filthy guitar sound which matches the track's lyrics. 'I Would Die 4 U' is my personal favourite. It's got a hugely catchy chorus that I'll be humming for ages. Now for some blasphemy. I'd never heard the full 9 minute version of the title track before, or even the radio edit all the way through. It's a good song, with another catchy chorus but I'd argue it's one of the weaker tracks on a stacked album. At the four minute mark there's a two minute guitar solo and it's great, but there's two minutes left! What else is there? I really hoped it would build to a massive crescendo and wall of sound with a blisteringly in your face solo, something maybe along the lines of 'November Rain'. Unfortunately it was the opposite, it just kind of fizzled out into a fade out. Still, it's a cracking album and one that I definitely should have listened to sooner. Upon first listen I thought a four was fair. Nah. I gave it another spin and it's an easy five.

Calling this album anything but genius is an understatement. However… the back half of it does the heavy lifting. It’s obviously an incredible album and a huge milestone in music history but the first few songs fall flat compared to the latter half
An explosion of style and 80's flashiness. Really like the compositions with many instruments and synths, it has an sofisticate feel, very good mixing and his voice is very free and intense. But I wasn't in the mood too much, so I didn't enjoy as much as I could. At first listen the opener "Let's Go Crazy" and ending "Purple Rain" were the songs that most caught my attention, but in the right mood I think all the songs would rock so hard.
Some of these songs were really cool, but a few of them were just meh to me. Still very impressive.
This really is an iconic album from the 1980's, that put Minneapolis on the musical map (along with the Replacements, of course!) and propelled Prince to commercial mainstream success. If you haven't heard Prince's music before, this album/soundtrack is a good place to start. His amazing talent and sheer showmanship is on full display on the record and the film and rock, funk, R & B, pop, soul music....will never be the same. The Twin Cities is the closest large U.S. city in my range and though I've never seen Prince live, every time I attend a concert at the First Avenue Club (where Purple Rain was filmed), I feel chills. I don't love Prince or this album, but it's solid and undeniably an important and must-hear record.
I love this album. I love many of Prince’s albums, and so I always feel like kind of poser to say something like “Purple Rain” is an amazing, five-star album.” It’s kind of like saying that a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is 5 stars. Of course it is. Are there more exotic sandwiches? Can we dig deeper into the sandwich discography to find other, more esoteric 5-star sandwiches? Of course we can. Will it take a star away from PB&J though? Thus I give you a totally expected five stars, Prince, for your album Purple Rain.
Purple Rain is arguably the most acclaimed and best albums of all time, and you want to know the secret as to why? Because it is one of the best albums of all time. Yeah, no shockers here. I could straight up end the review at "It's Purple Rain" and everyone would agree. I mean, It's Purple Fucking Rain; Of course it's a damn masterpiece. For an album themed around purple, It's fittingly one of the most colorful albums I've ever heard. It goes from Rock to Pop to Soul and more. Everything here is so vibrant and awe-inspiring. I could keep going, but I truly don't need. It's Purple Rain, and those Three words are already enough. 10/10
This was another album where I expected something more. The bangers are there, and they are great, but some very mediocre songs ride in between those. While not a bad album, I am not aboard the hype train with everyone else.

Purple Rain 1999 and Sign ‘O’ the Times both got 4, but this is an easy 5; 9 excellent tracks, all done and dusted in a superbly crisp and enjoyable 42 minutes. Let’s Go Crazy is an absolute banger, one of my favourite Prince songs, and up there with When Doves Cry and Purple Rain, but the rest of the songs are great as well, with some superb hooks and melodies. I love the little acoustic guitar figure on Take Me With U, and it’s a brilliantly catchy song. I love the 80s power ballad vibes of The Beautiful Ones, culminating in some Macca-esque vamping. Computer Blue is another great song, the piano motif and drum machine rhythms excellently set up for the solo passage leading into Darling Nikki. I have some practical questions concerning the opening lines, but nonetheless it's a brilliantly smutty bit of 80 tiny sex man r’n’b. When Doves Cry always seems to be one of those songs that pre-existed the time I first heard it, the piano hook and whole construction of it just feels immediately right. I’ve always tended to overlook I Would Die 4 U, but listening properly now I realise what a great song it its, the shimmering drum machine/synth part and chorus melody picked out by the piano is super. I love Baby I’m A Star, a great bit of propulsive, energetic synthy disco funk, a great bit of sequencing before the brilliantly grandiose and widescreen Purple Rain. I do love Controversy, 1999 and Around The World In A Day, as well as Sign ‘O’ the Times, but this is probably his best, most consistently great album - every programmed drum beat, hook, melody and arrangement add up to a joyously great, undeniable disco-synth-pop-funk-rock classic. 🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪 Playlist submission: Let’s Go Crazy
You'd be hard pressed to find many album bookends that outcompete the two here. 'Let's Go Crazy' to open is absolutely rocking. A very entertaining preacher-style opening, before it gives way to that killer riff, infectious beat and killer solo. And the climactic title track is Prince hitting the sweet spot of balladry, rock and gospel. The album filling is a consistently good standard amongst these behemoths. He doesn't take too long to find his falsetto which pretty much guarantees he's gonna be singing about shagging ('The Beautiful Ones'). On 'Darling Nikki' he loses some quality control in that regard as is his want - "I met her in a hotel lobby masturbating with a magazine". Firstly, she is committing this act in full view in a hotel lobby, which is rather demented. Secondly, she wasn't masturbating _to_ the magazine but _with_ the magazine. It sounds like she has her legs akimbo on the sofa by the reception desk fucking herself silly with a rolled up woman's weekly. One thing's for sure - I've got to see the film. Overall the album is a good listen. It has a funky pace, an alternative edge, and some out and out classics, even epics. But not quite enough for the toppermost.
“I’m something that you’ll never understand.” So sings the purple maestro on I Would Die 4 U. It’s a pretty good summary of an artist who is notoriously hard to summarise. It’s characteristic of Prince that he defies categorisation. He has an unsettling gift for combining unexpected elements. There’s something musically inventive on every track which go far beyond whatever genre he’s toying with at that particular moment. His vocal delivery is unique, one minute rock screaming then a tightly controlled soul falsettos. Tight disco stylings compete with extended, almost proggy instrumental passages. There’s even a bit of Beatlesque backwards tape fun, though he makes it his own thing. The opening of the title track is justly celebrated. Fun facts: Darling Nikki is the song which Tipper Gore heard her daughter listening to which led ultimately to Parental Advisory stickers. Of course the VPs missus didn’t entirely get this song; it’s about the emptiness of paying for sex, not a celebration of it. The trash can percussion and heavily distorted guitar play well with the vaudeville vocal delivery. I Would Die 4 U, Baby I’m A Star and Purple Rain we’re recorded live.
I've been waiting for this one. Easily an elusive 5. I put this as one of my top albums of all time. It's raw, sexual, dirty and just grooves so well. Prince still stands as the best concert I've ever seen. He was added a few days before Coachella '08 and what a treat it was. This album is cooking dinner album, a cleaning the house album, a backround party album and lastly a love making album. Prince is one of the GOATs

I’m not too keen on Prince yet never really gave Prince a chance, just not for me - a little overrated but maybe great at the time. Purple rain is of course nice but just one song on the album, down the middle 5/10 for me.
Similar to Sign 'o' the times, took a few listens to get to know the songs. Slightly more enjoyable due to the reasonable length. 3.5

I mean, what can you even say. It's 9 perfect songs sequenced perfectly. It's the greatest soundtrack ever recorded. It's the greatest solo album ever recorded (all respect to the Revolution, though). It's the greatest American album of all time. The superlatives are endless. The album is eternal.
It’s hard for me to *not* get emotional here. I’ll start upfront with the important acknowledgment: I know Prince was not always a good person. He elevated women on stage and behind the scenes, but treated some of them, including Sinéad O’Connor, like shit. But, on a gut level, it’s hard for me not to see Prince’s music as a symbol both for a very particular time in my life and the apex of an entire culture I lived and breathed. It started when I lived in Minnesota and a friend gave me a flash drive that opened my mind to a whole world of music I hadn’t give much thought about before, from Bob Dylan to Prince Nelson Rogers. And in the blink of an eye, I was still in Minnesota when he died, and overnight the symbol became a synecdoche. Every billboard was purple. But there’s a reason six million people, from the masses gathered outside the First Avenue in April 2016 (myself included) to the conservative dads I talked to around bluetooth speakers at their lake houses later that summer. let this represent them: it’s impossible to deny how good the music is. Let’s ignore the legend. How many albums have you heard before that open with anything more purposeful than “Let’s Go Crazy”? How many albums have you heard before that have as popular *and* weird a single as “When Doves Cry”? How many albums have you heard before that has a song that still lifts your soul out your body no matter how many times you hear it like “Purple Rain”? Prince used his insane guitar guitar skills, yalping vocals, and Linn LM-1 to make an album that I’d like to think would still be a favorite of mine - or anybody with any sense’s - all time favorite albums in spite of any larger than life personal significance. I know I’m being hyperbolic. Let me be hyperbolic once more: sometimes whenever I listen to just about any popular music I think “what’s the point in getting opinionated on this, treating this like high art?” Well, Prince wrote a song about a woman jerking off in a hotel lobby and it only reinforces my belief in pop music as high art every time.

I've tried to get into Prince before and always struggled despite really liking some songs, such as Raspberry Beret. I enjoyed this album a lot though, think as a whole it went down really well, weirdly I'm more mixed on his more popular songs.

aw let's fucking go. we all know this album. but instead of being a trek because i have to write about things i already know (tbh it only felt like that for the wall because it's like 30 tracks), i can't wait to talk about this. TRACK BY TRACK 1 LET'S GO CRAZY. this is absolutely everything an opener should be. an epic intro to get you hooked, iconic lines, packed full of energy and it shows you what to expect (but with plenty of more not yet shown). this song is actual crack in music form. 10/10 also am i the only one who thinks those opening synths need to be sampled in some hypnagogic pop 2 TAKE ME WITH U. such gorgeous production and composition, how does this sound so crisp. the strings are so alive and the snare is so good. i don't really have anything to say about this song but it's absolutely incredible and no steam has been lost. 10/10 3 THE BEAUTIFUL ONES. yes. this song shouldn't work after those two energetic ones but it just does. beautiful keys and probably the best vocal performance by prince bar maybe only the title track. so gorgeous, so lush and so smooth until he goes absolutely crazy. the best example of those insane screaming vocals he is so good at. oh man. 10/10 4 COMPUTER LOVE. is the song good? yes lisa. is it as good as the first three? no but that was some bar to cross. groovy and the progression is great, such amazing production. this song actually grew on me hugely this time around. 9/10 5 DARLING NIKKI. this album is just so glamorous. amazing production, when this song gets going it really gets going, those synths are everything. i really like that weird ass sound collage ending too, it sounds like something bowie would tack on to the end of his songs, it's probably the most experimental part of a top billboard album. 6 WHEN DOVES CRY. i don't even know if this needs a bass anymore. it's so minimalistic yet so great, and when those synths finally come in it's so glorious. such a catchy and flawless song. it's perfect and to think it isn't the best song on the album is crazy. 10/10 7 I WOULD DIE 4 U. this is another one that just grows on me everytime i listen to it. i always liked it but i never felt like listening to it but it's just great too. peak production, catchy, amazing composition and instrumentation. 10/10 8 BABY I'M A STAR. he is. i've always been of the opinion that this sounds like every other song on the album, and it kind of does, but every song is the shit. this is packed with energy and it's just so fun, and it drives the album forward. it drives it so forward that we're really gonna need a hell of a powerful ending but idk if he has it in him. 9/10 9 PURPLE RAIN. what the fuck do i even say about this. if for even one second i remember this as being a bit cheesy or overblown i can just listen to it and get totally floored by it everytime. one of the greatest songs of all time. everything about it is perfect. the buildup especially to the best guitar solo ever, it genuinely sounds like ascending to heaven despite how fucking cheesy that sounds. guy sounds like an angel over the guitar. i can't believe this song exists. 10/10 an outright classic in every regard. there was no way this wouldn't be beloved by absolutely everybody, and i hate to think that it mightn't were it released now. sure it's probably the poppiest thing prince released but for most artists that isn't also their magnum opus because this album is the shit. everything about it is perfect and you can pretty much play it at any occasion for any mood at all. there is never a time where i don't feel like listening to it, when it popped up as my next album a huge dumb fucking grin grew across my face. absolutely stunning. 10/10

I understand that most people hate this take, but this has everything I don’t like about 80s music. Weird production, everything is overly dramatized, and image seems more important than substance. Prince is very talented but our tastes don’t have much in common.
This album is incredible on a couple of levels. First, it is an actually great pop rock record (which is akin to a unicorn sighting already considering how oversaturated and unimaginative this genre is). And second, this little man made me care about vocals, which only a select few albums could do. You know, it's surprising to me how little fun music a genre that is supposedly all about catchiness produces. Most pop rock bands focus so much on trying to produce something that as inoffensive as possible that they forget to make it interesting. And unfortunately, considering how many successful pop rock bands there are, this strategy seems to work. Some of the most catchy music I've heard unironically comes from prog rock, which has the opposite of pop rock's philosophy of simplicity. Why? Because there’s a lot more artistic expression in that genre. Instead of following the norms, they break them if that means creating better art. I don't know, maybe 4/4 songs mathematically engineered to be the most basic shit ever because statistics tell that that's what an average Joe likes is not that fun for someone who listens to more music than just what comes up on radio. I'm not trying to be snobby, but it's just frustrating to me how little effort some popular bands put into their music and still remain successful. This album, however, is nothing alike. This is some of the most fun and exciting music I've ever heard. This is what the genre is supposed to be like but unfortunately isn't. I also don't find vocals all that fun, which is another huge discrepancy between me and an average listener. But Prince's singing is just so good on this record that I couldn't not pay attention to it. Such horny writing usually makes me cringe a bit, but Prince delivers it with such electrifying passion that it almost makes me believe that he's actually straight. Even through I have no interest in the subject matter this album presents, there's so much energy seeping through Prince's vocals that it's nothing short of contagious. There's a couple of laid back songs on this album that are not quite on the same level with the best bangers here, in my opinion, but even they have something to love about them, like that incredible screaming part in The Beautiful Ones, which a pretty mediocre track outside of that (yes, actual extreme vocals on a pop album). Honestly, what a ride. 9/10
There's a 'died too young' veneer attached to the Purple Pixie that gains him many unjustified superlatives; 'top 5 guitar player'? Hardly. Not even close in fact. However, anyone who wasn't around in 1984 will struggle to understand just how huge this album was. Still an enjoyable listen and one of only two Prince albums I regularly choose to listen to. Not a bad song on here and some great ones. It gets a rare 5/5 for me.

Although it's an obvious classic record and artist, I've never actually stopped to listen to Prince. No regrets after I did it for this project. It's brilliant! Very distinctive approach to pop music. I'd classify it as spacial, dancing, high on acid rock and roll. I'm loving it so far and will surely listen to it more.
Possibly the best album of the generation, and one of the best of all time. Masterpiece start to finish.
Second half significantly better than first half
I'm giving Prince the respect he deserves with my rating, but it's one of those cases where he was just so iconic at the time that everyone copied and built off of him to the point where the original doesn't sound as special as it should. I want to go back and give this a deeper listen later.

Lots of conflicting thoughts about this album. The title track is absolutely incredible and a fantastic song, but so much if the rest of the album feels either derivative, dated, or unappealing. This album was a nice discovery, as I only knew the title Purple Rain. It's coherent, the title order is perfect, it is so pleasant to hear, a true gem I know I'll find myself listening again for sure.

Super solid album, really loved most of it. Glad I finally listened to this song, from the last few I listened to werent my favorites. The hits were pretty amazing on this one, and it’s got a really good flow, might have to give it one more listen often on. Solid 4 to 5 on this one.
This underwhelmed my expectations. I really enjoyed the sounds and vibes of this album, especially "Let's Get Crazy," "Take Me With U" and of course "Purple Rain." But a lot of the songs in the middle were kind of middling, especially "When Doves Cry" and "I would die for U". Somewhere in the high 3 star, low 4 star territory.
I remember seeing a cardboard cutout of prince on his moto outside the record store at my local mall when I was just a kid over 40 years ago. Somehow in the span of time from that day to this day, I had never listed to this start to finish. Man... it's all good.
Prince is another of those artists I’ve always felt I should like more than I do—I have come to enjoy some of the singles and can appreciate how (like Bowie) he ploughed his own furrow, but it doesn’t do anything more for me.
This one's gonna get me crucified, but I'm not a Prince fan. It's a collection of immaculately produced and performed songs that just do nothing for me. And every time he goes into his high pitched screeches, it just takes me out of it. The one song that I enjoy, When Doves Cry still has the issue of being two minutes too long. Let's Go Crazy is a solid track too, but that's my extent of enjoyment from this record. It's just too pristine and doesn't have enough grit for me, and even when he tries to add the grit I'm looking for (such as with the aforementioned screams/screeches), it falls flat for me. I admit this album is good (and probably great), it's just not for me.

Supongo que porque ya tengo cierto hastío hacia ese sonido de pop ochentero típico, o porque es menos arriesgado (solo "Darling Nikki" mantiene algo de la hipersexualidad explícita de sus otros álbumes) y más comercial que el resto de su discografía. Aunque sigue siendo un discazo.

Its good very strong standout tracks like lets go crazy, when doves cry or the title track purple rain but otherwise it remains a quite boring but great album.
This one is top 10 for sure. It's a master class in composing, arranging, producing, mastering and musicianship. Prince is like rock, blues, disco, gospel, and pop all smashed together.

# 400 and it's one of my all-timers. What's insane about this album is he just decided one day to make an all-time pop album. Literally was like, "how do I do arena rock ballad? Here." "Oh, a bunch of classic 80s dance grooves? No prob." A no skip, makes me weep like a dove, incredible artist at the peak of their powers album. And then never went back to a pure pop well ever again for a full album. A world beater. Baby, he's a star. I could go on and on. See you all in the purple rain.

I prefer Prince at his more mellow (see: adore) but this album is undeniably quality and undeniably fun. I find some of the instrumental choices to sound a bit dated, but that’s a minuscule complaint for such a great work.

Always wanted to hear a Prince album, I’m glad I got this one early on I’ve had it rotting in my library on Apple Music for a while now. This right here is something to remember, it has absolutely zero skips, it’s banger after banger, the synths, guitar, and vocals, everything just comes together so, so nicely. I wouldn’t call this a concept album but there is a cohesiveness here between the tracks that could make out to be a narrative which is really nice it makes it feel like an album and not a playlist, I like that a lot. I was so immersed in this album, the Dolby Atmos mix I have on Apple Music is one of the best mixes I’ve heard in a long time and it only made the album so much better. I need to make a section just for Purple Rain, oh my god it’s so amazing, it may go on for 8 minutes but that doesn’t even feel long enough, it is such a beautiful track. Everything comes together perfectly, the introspection, the vocals drowning in the synths and the long guitar solo at the end, I love every second of it, genuinely might be one of the best tracks I think I’ve ever heard. I could go on and on. Amazing album. Rating: Masterpiece (Strong ☆☆☆☆☆) Favorite Tracks: Lets Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Computer Blues, Would Die 4 You, and obviously PURPLE RAIN. (I can list the entire album)
It’s Prince, it’s and easy 5 as for many of his albums, but yes this one is at the top of the mountain for sure.
Easy 5. Generational talent, one of a kind, and best album by him. All I can say is, "Game, blouses."
I mean, it's Prince. Prahhhnsss. My kids enjoyed hearing his vocal freakouts that came at the end of just about every song on this album.
A masterpiece. I remember listening to album in its entirety and being blown away. Every song is memorable. The whole album takes you through a journey. Keep in mind Prince had just turned 25 when this came out Everything on this album just seems to work well. Take Me With You is one of my all time favorite Prince songs. Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard and James Brown all thrown into a stew. A very easy 5 for me.

I feel like many start at Purple Rain, spend some time with the rest of Prince’s dizzying catalog, then come back to this and appreciate it even more. Despite its 80s-ness, it still stands the test of time as one of the greatest.
Not a prince fan.
This singlehandedly just made me a Prince fan. It's bombastic and busy but never overproduced. Pure fun, like an 80s party encapsulated in 50 minutes. 23/03/25
Really solid album. I've never seen the Purple Rain movie and there were a few times when it seemed like the songs would be better for that but for the most part this is a great album 8/10

Pop rock. A few real classics here but also some that didn’t hit the mark for me. Wanted to like it more than I did.
I feel like I need to actually watch the movie to fully understand this album, but there are so many great songs on here.

This one was interesting. The 1999 album grabbed me pretty much straight away, but it was not so with Purple Rain. After the first listen I figured maybe three stars, but I'm using the deluxe expanded edition, and carried on to listen to all 30-plus tracks. I liked all the extra material a lot more than many of the songs on the main album, so I decided to give it another play, and still wasn't keen on several of the songs. However, after a third play they had all mostly grown on me, and I now feel that a full five-stars is justified. It just goes to show how many factors there are in one's appreciation of an album.

There are great albums, there are legendary albums, and then there’s Purple Rain. From the moment "Let’s Go Crazy" opens with its electrifying sermon-like intro, you know you’re in for something special. The energy is frantic & raw. The fusion of rock, funk, pop, and R&B is seamless - and Prince doesn’t just play within genres, he bends them to his will. More than an album, Purple Rain is a moment in time, an artistic statement, and a revolution all at once. It’s Prince at his absolute peak.
This album tests what it is exactly that my rating is supposed to reflect. Is it strictly my enjoyment? The quality of the album in an artistic sense? What exactly am I doing? Purple Rain is hugely nostalgic for me. At the risk of sounding sappy, I was falling hard for a beautiful girl at the time this was released. That summer, I came home from my freshman year of college, looking forward to seeing her more frequently. When Doves Cry was released in May just as I was beginning to travel back and forth from my hometown to spend evenings with my first true love. A 30 minute drive each way. Doves was constantly played on radio during these back and forth trips. Let’s Go Crazy followed mid-summer. So of course this album inspires deep wonderful feelings for me. Upon revisiting, while still nostalgic, it remains a terrific album. It dangerously skirts with an 80s sound, but to my ears Prince pulls it slightly away from being completely outdated. Mostly because the songs are interesting and he is one a hell of a guitar player. He’s also a great songwriter. And good songs hold up.
Perfect album. No notes. Obligated to love as a Minnesotan.

Second album proposé par le générateur après 1999 que je n’avais pas apprécié du tout (noté 1/5). Ce second album contient quelques tubes dynamiques (Let's Go Crazy ++ avec des parties de guitare électrique sympa : +1), mais aussi (et malheureusement) des morceaux plus lents et ennuyeux (The Beautiful Ones --, Purple Rain). Le son a un peu mal vieilli je trouve, noyé dans les effets. Et je n'aime pas les hurlements désagréables de Prince sur quelques morceaux. Je ne l'écouterais pas une seconde fois. =>2/5
Purple Rain is a mega song, and When Doves Cry is also good. The rest I could very much take or leave. Probably won’t listen again.
Liked it a lot more than I expected; didn't know he had such cute ones sound-wise?! LOVE the acknowledgement of female masturbation in Darling Nikki; very cool for the mid-80s! Purple Rain is the weakest song so its fame is inexplicable.

I know this is a legendary album but honestly, I don’t see myself returning to it anytime soon. The title track is a banger though (of course).
I love Prince but this album feels more inconsistent to me. I still like Dirty Mind and 1999 much more than this one. But he two big songs on this are some of his best. Highlights: When Doves Cry Purple Rain
