Reviews (page 8 of 14)

I was quick shocked by the sound of this album. I never listened to Prince before. This was way more electronic / keyboard driven than I was expecting. I thought he was a little more rock. Not taking anything away from it as I thought it was GREAT. The songs were very well written. They kept my attention throughout. I never got bored. He writes some very catchy music. The vocals were outstanding. My goodness, I would have thought there were 3 different lead singers on this album. And to top it all off, it is kind of cooky, very odd music, and lots of vocals I wasn't expecting, so it kept me entertained. Definitely deserving of this list, and not as sterile or expected as I thought it would be. It was actually quite adventurous.

Classic

Very 80s but some good songs

Yo already know!

This album is amazing. I really should see this movie.

Always great

I really want to givde it five stars, but the album just doesn't draw me back the same way that other 5/5 ones do. Purple rain is an absolute classic, and should always be listened to as an encore.

Indémodable!

Nope. Still can't get quite the craze for Prince. I've heard this plenty as well before. When Doves Cry is amazing. Some other stuff is good. I still fail to love the titlr track. Despite this, it's consistent and generally enjoyable and probably the most fully listenable Prince album I know.

I don't know what to do with this. There are 3 or 4 tracks here which undeniably awesome. But there is also what feels like a bunch of filler. I think it makes sense in the context of the film, but on an album they feel pretty meh. Plus they have that 80s production sound that I've never really enjoyed. Prince was clearly a genius, but I have always found him fairly frustrating as an artist. I saw him live a few years ago, cost a fortune and 90% of the songs I knew were reinterpreted for different instruments/styles and he even cut the guitar solo in purple rain. I'm all for artists to be artists, but I struggled with that. This album sits either at a low 4 or a high 3. I suspect I'll go 4 cos the few hits are ace. But I still find it a frustrating listen and rarely put it on.

Still good - Short too

Wow. What can I say at this point. Let’s go crazy, When doves cry and especially Purple rain are phenomenal. Purple rain in particular is one of the greatest songs ever made.

Wow.

Full of bangers and different sounds, experimental for a pop album, just might not be cohesive enough and the start is a bit rough

It might be peak, need more listens to assess

Good strong album. Liked his stuff but didn’t love it all at the time. Come to appreciate him.

banger after banger real 80s hours i can't listen to purple rain without getting goosebumps

dare i say overrated

A true classic. So much feeling packed in this record and stellar playing.

Probably the most 80’s sounding album there is

Terrific album and my favorite from Prince. A few of the deeper cuts are a bit overwrought for my liking, but most of this is almost a greatest hits album. I especially love the title track and think its probably his best song

Purple Rain is probably the worst song on the album

4 estrelas

Old Prince is best Prince

Good album.

Very 80s. Very upbeat. Nice vocals.

Hacía mucho que no escuchaba el disco entero tal cual. No se hace largo, hay mucha música, es un despliegue de recursos. La producción ha envejecido mal, me temo, pero musicalmente es una exhibición.

A showcase for a bunch of forms of pop music: dance, funk, rock, you name it. I do feel there's only one truly amazing track on this, and that's "When Doves Cry." It's groove is the most infectious thing on the album and Prince's swagger really sells it. The title track is a great album closer, but only a very good song; it's a bit too slow and dramatic for me to want to listen to it on its own. Otherwise the album is made up of good songs, but the variety helps to make sure it never drags. Prince was a great showman and this really does feel like him trying every form of 80's pop music and succeeding at them.

regal pop and soul

Good ass album

Back when CDs were still a thing I bought a load off a friend and there were quite a few Prince ones in the bundle. Now while I agree the wee Purple Fella was undoubtedly talented and a fine, fine guitarist I did find a lot of filler on them all. However this one, though there is a bit, is much better I can be listened to right through without skipping every other track!

Classic, obviously very good but not necessarily what I'd choose to sit down and listen to

Such a unique feeling

I thoroughly enjoyed this but not as much as I think I'm supposed to. I think it'll grow on me a lot as I hear the hits more, so I'm just gonna give it 4 stars and leave it alone for now

All time classic. Cheesy AND amazing.

easily the best prince album. has a good blend of poppy stuff, funky stuff, rocky stuff, and stuff just makes you want to disassociate from life (in a good way). plus who doesn't like purple rain the song? easily deserves it's praises even with a few half misses on the album.

Did not know what to expect, but I got a great album. To the point where I think Purple Rain might be the worst song on the album. Ok maybe not quite, but it was both dancey and atmospheric, and I didn't know you could do that.

Surely the best title track of all time.

No private session used for this one. I have definitely listened to this one before and dear lord are the a lot of radio/MTV heavy repeats contained therein.

I like it. Prince is having fun with the songs. When Doves cry was great

блять он классный

Bold mix of genres with some big hits. Hard to think of a of an experimental type of album being more commercially successful. Well worth revisiting 41 years later.

Me surpreendi com o disco. Na minha ignorância acreditava que seria uma cópia de Michael Jackson, mesmo sabendo que esse álbum veio antes da fase de maior sucesso de MJ. Músicas muito bem produzidas, com arranjos instrumentais e vocais bem feitos.

Prince made loads of good singles but the albums I've heard have a lot of filler, this being the exception.

It's Purple Rain by Prince. If you were 9 when it came out, you know what that means.

This aged pretty well, and there's some very good songs on here. Heck, I could listen to this occasionally, even.

Positively surprised. I remember dismissing the album the first time around when I was 15-16 years old. I never was a big fan of the title song, but it really fits in the album context. It‘s a classic not understood by me the first time around. It could be a 5/5 someday for me

Not a huge prince fan it normally look how great I am and how women love me etc etc and the length of the last song the title track filled me with dread. However there are some great soulful tracks on here along with some poppy disco greats his voice is really good on this too and as well as the singles i didnt really dislike any track its good. I do not know how often I will return to it as a collective album but I liked it.

Nothing beats Purple Rain, When Doves Cry and I Would Die 4 U!

Banco mucho la banda y las vocales del artista son excelentes. Quizás no es mi tipo de música.

Got Sarah to get up early because this was today's album

Never really got why prince is considered to be one of the greatest of all time. This album didn't change that. I deff good, i just don't see it in the same category as the 5/5 albums.

Prince is one of those guys I admire and respect more than love. Maybe that’s my initial exposure being his “sexy” side as a child and so I don’t have the nostalgia for some of his earlier material the way I do with the other big 80s pop stars (MJ, Madonna, et al.) who had songs that were mostly about dancing the night away, maybe with a wink here and there, whereas Prince is like baby we are FUCKING and also what’s up with domestic abuse? Purple Rain is just a bit too heavy for my tastes maybe, everything is at 10 from the jump, super loud and never lets up. That’s roughly the same problem I had with Bad, come to think of it, which is not a good record for the most part, whereas this has songs and hooks for days, not to mention Prince inventing entire sound palettes that defined an entire decade as an afterthought.

It's different from what you'd expect from a pop album.

wait so i’ve like never listened to prince and this was actually way better than i expected i wish i listened a little less distracted def wanna relisten and pick songs to favorite

There were some songs that elevated it to the level of cool, but it wasn't really my thing. Still pretty good.

Obviously an iconic album - one I had as a kid, and haven't listened to beginning to end in a very long time. I really appreciate the degree of experimentation going on here and the musicianship and production are just incredible. It is so over the top and that's part of what I love about it - there is nothing subtle here, lol. It's a really cohesive album - I thought Beautiful Ones and Computer Blue were just ok and sounded particularly dated to my 2025 ears, but those low points for me aside the album has a great flow and a clear outlook.

Takes me right back to the eighties! Somehow doesn’t sound dated though and a classic piece of rock/pop. Great musicianship and song writing. Very eclectic too.

Just a great soundtrack to a great movie by a great artist. Who needs more?

This one required multiple listens. Initially I was turned off by the 80s pop rock vibes. I dislike electric keys and Prince's singing is more screaming at times, which I don't care for. But man could the guy play guitar. The more I listened to this, the more I enjoyed it. 4/5

Hyvä levy, ei kuitenkaan niin loistava kuin ajattelin. 3,5/5.

Well, you can't argue with Prince. A bit more shrieking than I want in some of my songs, though.

4/5 this artist formerly known as prince put out some pretty good stuff man

it's Prince motherfucker. specifically his most universally acclaimed album. is it great?? obviously! but it's certainly a bit more mainstream and a lot less surreal than his other big albums of the 80s (1999 and Sign O the Times). that's not a knock, but to someone more familiar with Weirdo Prince like me, it can be a bit middling that this is his greatest achievement in the popular consciousness. still awesome though deserves to be one of the 1001? of course! of course! of course!

Alguna vez debería volver a escucharlo con compañía... si. Nora: 3.7

Maximum horny jams, I mean this guy is feral in half of these tracks. I'll never complain about something being this violently 80s, especially since this is THE defining violently 80s record. Prince really is a character in every sense of the word and he struts that damn character around whenever he makes music. TL;DR the world's gayest straight man makes really entertaining sexy jams. In other news, the sky is blue.

My parents listened to this album like it was going out of style when it came out. Lots of big hits on here, plus some forgotten gems. A lot of folk think about Prince as a pop star, but there is some of his smoking guitar playing on this album buried amongst the 1980s eletro-pop. His singing runs a gamut but always proves he's one of kind, a true original. Darling Nikki is like bottled sex. I remember thinking my parents shouldn't let me listen to this.

I liked the songs partially, like let's go crazy, the beautiful ones, computer blue and I got to know that Prince has like really strong vocals, but he's not quite my style. I think I'm going to listen to this album one more time sometime

a movie about cheating by a cheater what could be better

Grew up listening to the hits of this album and have learned each track is fabulous all these years later

Classic album

Less funky than 1999 but somehow better. When Doves Cry is maybe Prince's best track, and a lot of the first side of the album is very good as well. I've never been a huge prince fan, I don't always love the affected 80s sensibility he has, but this is an undeniably good album. 4/5

Very drama music

Ansi þétt. Ekki fullkomin en ákaflega góð lög þarna.

Darling Nikki is so scandalous! Very poppy album, so I have to dock some points because I don't like the 80s ultra-produced pop sound. 3.5 rounded up to 4* Highlights: when doves cry, i would die 4 u, purple rain

Lo disfruté bastante, rebasó mis expectativas.

Pretty good

La mia traccia preferita oltre a purple rain che va be' è when doves cry.

Great one

freaky funky songs for freaky funky weirdos

Title track is 15,000/10

Very very 80s. The second half is really strong, with When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U and Purple Rain almost all in a row. It was fun

Really good, amazing stuff, lovely sound. 4 stars

a classic one. Purple rain was actually one of my most listened songs last year, i love that one sooo much. the whole album was fun to listen to, actually surprised me with the experimental side of it. but ngl, while listening to it, i was only waiting for the last song, so i could enjoy one of my favorite songs of all time once again:Dd loooveeee for prince

ai adorei me senti uma emo romântica

Soooo good.

This album was great, I don't really know what else to say. I loved it. I really wish I had been born earlier so I could have see Prince perform live.

It starts well and has some.good hits. Overall a good listen.

Classic

Almost a perfect album. Amazing guitars and songwriting. One of the best soundtracks ever made

This was good.

Surprisingly layered. I think it mostly holds up but still lives in that corny 80’s Pop music soundscape. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the deep cuts. Prince can do a lot of things I didn’t know about.

It's a great album - I wondered if it would score a five. But in the end a it was a strong four.

Brilliant pop music. I never want to be friends with a person who does not sing along to Purple Rain.

Very solid album but it's clear why the hits are the hits

Fun album, listened to this while cleaning and enjoyed it. Nothing really stood out as amazing or something I wanted to save. 7/10

I haven't listened to a lot of Prince, but I know he's a major cultural icon. "Let's Go Crazy" has some cool keys with classic 80s over them. I like it. "Computer Blue" sounds like Ghostbusters. This is a good thing. "Darling Nikki" is a very different song, it's fun. It sounds a little like Vampire Weekend. This album rocked. Great variety, almost all good songs. I'm surprised 'Purple Rain' is the most famous song, I thought many others were a lot better. 8/10

Ta guay la verda

My first experience with anything related to this album was hearing the song 'Purple rain' on the TV when I was a young teenager and I thought that it was one of the most boring songs I had ever heard. Back then I was really into EDM, so I didn't have a good ear for music. Two days ago, this list presented me this album (I couldn't keep up with all the music), the second one to get recommended after 'Sing O The Times', which is an album that I liked but I didn't love. Before my first listen of this record, I was a bit afraid of feeling the same way as I did many years ago or feeling as underwhelmed as when I listened to 'Sing O The Times'. Fortunately, I can proudly say I did enjoy this project way more than I did the other one. This record is super creative and consitent. There is no bad song in here, and their performances are some of the most passionte I've ever heard, specially Prince's screaming, which is always well placed and adds a lot of feeling. In addition to the great perfomances, a trait which I did I appreciate the most is that, production-wise, it has a very unique sound for its time. I always felt like 80's pop tend to feel very overproduced, with everything including to many effects. However, Prince did an incredible job to make the sound of this project feel very organic. When it comes to giving it a score, in spite of talking so positive about this album and very much enjoying it, I don't think I love this enough to give it 5 stars, so I'm giving it 4.

oof, otro clásico

Absolute classic. Made up for having to listen to Oasis and The Cara

schön gsi wiedermal zäme es album z'lose – vilicht aber doch eis umegeschreie z'vill für so en post camping trip heifahrt gsi doch prince bliebt prince und darum gids 4 chrönli

oh yeah prince fucks (literally and musically)

There’s no doubt this is an awesome album. So many incredible songs. My only issue is that it’s super long. Since it’s not really my go to genre, it did drag on a bit. Still, musicianship, songwriting - 100% awesome.

Some very good tunes but I don’t think it really deserves the legendary status it enjoys. No hate to Prince whatsoever

Good, expanded version the album feels a bit self indulgent though. I feel like Nobuo Uematsu really liked prince.

I forgot how good this album was. The movie was okay.

I get Prince now a bit. Mostly bangers. Loved pretty much all of it. 9/10

9/10 This man is straight

4.5 stars. Soundtrack to film that is great as a standalone pop/rock/R&B album. Prince's talent is on full-display, heavy layering throughout. Personal favorite is opening "Let's Go Crazy" and the title track is a hit fora reason too.

the guitar was really good, i liked it

It's a good album, nothing impressive with the exception of some tracks. I wouldn't say it's as good as many people say it is, but it's definitely an enjoyable and, many times, interesting album.

Ah Prince my little purple sex goblin

Chansons entrainante avec let’s go crazy et baby i’m a star. Purple Rain quelle balade!

prince: el álbum, buenísimo álbum que recoge toda su esencia, 8,5/10

Charlie Murphy led me here

Classic

Love prince

Album mit dem ikonischen Song Purple Rain. Insgesamt gutes aber nicht außergewöhnliches Album.

Purple Rain is a brilliant fusion of rock, funk, pop, and soul that showcases Prince at his creative peak. The album is packed with unforgettable tracks like “When Doves Cry” and the iconic title song, both emotionally charged and musically innovative. While a couple of tracks feel slightly overshadowed by the standouts, the album as a whole is a bold, genre-defying masterpiece that still holds up decades later. A near-perfect example of Prince’s genius.

Full of timeless hits, raw sexual energy, and general love for life. I really need to see this movie to experience this album in full, but even without seeing it, I can feel the genius of Prince through the speakers. I wish this was something I grew up on, but my parents (probably wisely) thought I should experience Prince once I was older. Well, here we are, and Purple Rain is excellent.

A fun album by a real genius. Some bangers on here.

I’m a Prince novice, had only listened to the singles before. But this album showcases Prince’s range and his ability to transcend genre. Really enjoyed this and it’s one of those albums I need to spend a lot more time with.

molt bo

I am having a hard time rating this one. I really don’t care much for 80’s electronic synthesizer pop, but a couple of the songs, (When Doves Cry & Purple Rain) are just so damn good! And I love his guitar work on this album…there just isn’t nearly enough of it. All in all, I did for the most part enjoy this album, and really prefer it over 1999, which I didn’t like at all. This one is between 3 and 4 stars for me, and the highs are so high they push it over the line to a four.

Prince's music isn't my style, but I can respect and admire its greatness. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5

Great album, would give 4.5 stars if I could

Revolution CARRIED this Album, the beats are incredible. Guitar and bass went super hard and mixed very well with Prince's vocals. Favourite Song: Computer Blue

I had to warm up to this album, the first bit def wasn’t as strong as the second half. Let me just say prince I wasn’t familiar with your game …. Respect

Really engaging musically. For the first time, I understand the Prince hype

Luckily, the kitsch infused cover has only mildly (but somewhat) trickled into the music. No doubt, Prince was an extremely talented musician, both as a composer and a multi-instrumentalist (and as a showman if you care about that). I can't deny that. I just wish I liked his music more. But is this a well-made album and is it a must on the 1001 list? Absolutely.

Guy was ahead of his time

Purple Rain one of greatest songs ever written

Ok ok it was good it was actually really good fuckkkkkk

Went back for a second listen

Great album. Not every track was a winner.

Amazing album. Prince was an incredible talented musician.

4/5 just really good

One day Prince will properly click with me. Whilst today is not that day, it is still a very good album. Would quite happily never listen to the title track again though.

I respect the choices but I don't like them all, solid 4

4 out of 5. Classic Prince.

Never been a big fan of Princes music but respect the hell put of his guitar playing.

Nikad mi ovi nije bio njegov vrh osim when the doves cry

Let’s Go Crazy // The Beautiful Ones // When Doves Cry // Baby I’m a Star // Purple Rain 3.5/5

This album is a showcase for the early 80s pop sound. But even more than this, Prince has come up with some really good songs, among them the title track, which is a timeless classic and almost worth the price of admission alone. This album really deserves to be here. 4/5

Classic album that I was waiting for to be on here! Probably my favorite Piece album, so many bangers on here and the movie wasn't half bad either!

Classic with unbelievable musicianship

4 killer tracks and the rest I could forget about.

This is an incredible album! This is seriously one of the most inspirational albums of all time. People will call this Prince’s best album, just because of the amount of fame it got, but honestly, in my opinion, it’s not. Still a great album, but it’s not worth the hype that people give it that often. It’s an incredible album though.

Really good but not something I feel like listening to 90% of life

Decent enough aye. Didnt put me in purple pain!

I mean based on a super bowl halftime performance alone, this has got to be at least a four-star

I was expecting more from this. I probably last listened to this when I was 10 years old in 1985. It was good, but not amazing. 2 sensational songs in among some okay songs. Those 2 songs alone give this album a 4 though. I feel it maybe needs another listen, so i will definitely listen to it again

Among panic attacks of post punk swung pop, direct to the point of comical ballads – “It’s in your eyes. What can I say? They turn me on” – and onanistic set piece fantasies that seem to revolve around innumerable promiscuous kinks you can find Prince; alternately luxuriating in a crushed velvet morass of gentle synthesisers, or rubbing himself up against columns of abrasive, spiked treble. The Prince of Purple Rain has it all and then a bit more; a characteristic excess that muddies the distinction between director and voyeur (if ever there was one) at the best of times, but probably never more so than here. Even if the movie it was attached to has largely, over the past 40+ years, lapsed into curiosity territory, Purple Rain the album succeeds in delivering something equally capable of thrilling both multiplex punters and adult cinema devotees. The best songs here transcend their context entirely, catching down a delicate melancholy that feels far more anxious than its author might consciously allow: what if she doesn’t want me back, or worse … what if the wanting was all I ever wanted? Without myself wanting to give too much away – mystery constituting an element of seduction that feels lacking from Purple Rain at times – it’s a star for each of the times I feel like Prince has, on this record, perfected the art of the pop song. Libido – profligate, insatiable, eternal, ashamed – is a complicated thing. Purple Rain must rank among its most trenchant exegeses; certainly its most charismatic.

I've always put off listening to this one in its entirety. Very boppy, enjoyed it a lot, but maybe it's not catchy in the way that it would pop into my head randomly (not that that's the mark of a good song or album). My favorite moments were the wild full-on screams. Also, the infamous Darling Nikki wasn't as scandalous as I was hoping. Favorite track: When Doves Cry

Enjoyed all the classics but didn’t resonate with me enough to get the full 5

8/10 A great pop album. The man was obsessed, and that is to it's detriment, but I guess it was one of his defining qualities, so what are you gonna do. Musically it is funky and upbeat. I don't love any of the tracks but equally I like all of it. Just please get him a cold shower.

Pas degueu le gonz

Prince really knows how to hook you

Really great, songwriting is amazing, you have callous and songs like the title track. He's a great guitarist as well.

It’s hard not to listen to this and not think about that SuperBowl 41 halftime show.

Dad- 8 Mom- 10 Mike- 8.5 Lori- 8.5 Michael- 10 Miles- 7 Cole- 9 Avg- 8.71

It’s confident, horny, and impossibly cool. The hits are undeniable, just iconic start to finish, but the surprise is how strong the whole album is. Even the filler wears high heels and kicks ass. Think Michael Jackson’s Bad if it was a little nastier and a lot more purple. No one else could pull this off, not then, not now. It’s got the energy of a late-night roller rink slow dance that turns into a sexy rager. Spins: 3 Playlist Additions: - Let's Go Crazy - When Doves Cry - Purple Rain

Classic college music for me.

Lots of very good songs. A couple of crazy vocals. Loses a star for the 80s production. Sorry Prince.

Romántico y me dio ganas de bailar

Have always loved the title track, but never listened to the rest of the album. Prince is amazingly talented -Let's Go Crazy -When Doves Cry -Purple Rain

I know the hits on the album. I know the movie. The songs that I really didn't care for felt like filler songs for the movie. In fact I could picture the scenes as they played....and it didn't make it any less cheesy. Because of the hits, I rate it higher than a 3.

It's Prince. What more is there to say? The hits are bangers, and even the B-sides are pretty good.

Definitely my favorite Prince album, and one filled with some real bangers.

Prince is at the peak of his powers on this one. Let's Go Crazy is my favorite Prince song, and Purple Rain might be his overall best song. Came close to 5, but a couple of the songs on this are pretty skippable to me.

Upon a couple more listens "Purple Rain" honestly grew on me quite a bit, it was definitely a matter of being in the right mood & scenario to really get the vibe of the record, I just had to be in the right mood, & listening to this record in a dimly lit room on a Friday night was the PERFECT setting for this record, this album is silky smooth as hell & it hit me just right with its funky synths & guitars & of course Prince's seductive vocals & lyrics, everything about it on every track works, the production also exemplifies all of the smooth funk of the record perfectly, I love this album, I liked it before, but now it hit me to the point where I really love it, amazing record, one of the best for sure.

A bunch of songs about sex plus purple rain, which is also about sex.

Calling this album anything but genius is an understatement. However… the back half of it does the heavy lifting. It’s obviously an incredible album and a huge milestone in music history but the first few songs fall flat compared to the latter half

An explosion of style and 80's flashiness. Really like the compositions with many instruments and synths, it has an sofisticate feel, very good mixing and his voice is very free and intense. But I wasn't in the mood too much, so I didn't enjoy as much as I could. At first listen the opener "Let's Go Crazy" and ending "Purple Rain" were the songs that most caught my attention, but in the right mood I think all the songs would rock so hard.

Some of these songs were really cool, but a few of them were just meh to me. Still very impressive.

This really is an iconic album from the 1980's, that put Minneapolis on the musical map (along with the Replacements, of course!) and propelled Prince to commercial mainstream success. If you haven't heard Prince's music before, this album/soundtrack is a good place to start. His amazing talent and sheer showmanship is on full display on the record and the film and rock, funk, R & B, pop, soul music....will never be the same. The Twin Cities is the closest large U.S. city in my range and though I've never seen Prince live, every time I attend a concert at the First Avenue Club (where Purple Rain was filmed), I feel chills. I don't love Prince or this album, but it's solid and undeniably an important and must-hear record.

# 478 : Purple Rain : 12/05/2025 They’ve done a pretty decent job, one of the best albums of all time. Number 8 in Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of all time Number 4 in Apple Music 100 Best Albums. Number 15 in Udiscover Music's Greatest Rock Albums The music is great, an absolute banger! Every song is a classic and I really like this and I have played this before and I would play this one again. Favourite track : When Doves Cry

Some amazing songs, fairly long album though!

You'd be hard pressed to find many album bookends that outcompete the two here. 'Let's Go Crazy' to open is absolutely rocking. A very entertaining preacher-style opening, before it gives way to that killer riff, infectious beat and killer solo. And the climactic title track is Prince hitting the sweet spot of balladry, rock and gospel. The album filling is a consistently good standard amongst these behemoths. He doesn't take too long to find his falsetto which pretty much guarantees he's gonna be singing about shagging ('The Beautiful Ones'). On 'Darling Nikki' he loses some quality control in that regard as is his want - "I met her in a hotel lobby masturbating with a magazine". Firstly, she is committing this act in full view in a hotel lobby, which is rather demented. Secondly, she wasn't masturbating _to_ the magazine but _with_ the magazine. It sounds like she has her legs akimbo on the sofa by the reception desk fucking herself silly with a rolled up woman's weekly. One thing's for sure - I've got to see the film. Overall the album is a good listen. It has a funky pace, an alternative edge, and some out and out classics, even epics. But not quite enough for the toppermost.

An absolute classic!

We lost Prince too soon.

4.0/it had some good tracks and i'm sure this sounded crazy at the time of release but i'm not phased i guess

Haven't been super into the other Prince albums I've gotten on this list, but this one is hitting

Prince is easily one of the most talented musicians in modern history. Sometimes I feel like his incredible output slightly waters down his talent. There are great songs on this album, but there are a bunch of forgettable ones as well. 3.5/5 Might listen again

I like it. It is like 4.5 stars. Would be worth to listen to again.

I’ve never really been a Prince guy. But I think I get it.

I've tried to get into Prince before and always struggled despite really liking some songs, such as Raspberry Beret. I enjoyed this album a lot though, think as a whole it went down really well, weirdly I'm more mixed on his more popular songs.

to much vocal runs for my taste

Classic, lots of great tracks.

NEARLY a 5 it’s on the edge

I should really be listening to more Prince. Great Album. Reminded me of Stevie Wonder a bit. Favorite Track: When Doves Cry

Naughty

Mostly unremarkable, but then that last song made this album worthwhile

SO fucking cool!! never really listened to prince and i’m very content, some of it sounds like it would be in a funky 80’s sci-fi movie which is probably the point lmfao, can gladly say i’ve added most of it to my liked!! rip lola from kinky boots you would’ve loved prince’s 1984 album purple rain

I’m really liking the vibe of this . Some of it giving MJ to an extent . The guitar is very satisfying. Really enjoyed

thought i was going to hate this album because i hate the song "purple rain" but guys i did NOT hate this album in the slightest. not a fan of "darling nikki", thats my mum mate. shame because that one would probably be a favourite as well. the song purple rain just doesnt fit in the album imo, but i loved the rest of the album a lot a lot!

Good album, classic hits and doesn't outstay it's welcome

Let's Go Crazy 3.6 Take Me with U 3.8 The Beautiful Ones 3.4 Computer Blue 3.5 Darling Nikki 4 When Doves Cry 4.2 I Would Die 4 U 3.6 Baby I'm a Star 3.4 Purple Rain 4 Score: 3.722222222

I'm giving Prince the respect he deserves with my rating, but it's one of those cases where he was just so iconic at the time that everyone copied and built off of him to the point where the original doesn't sound as special as it should. I want to go back and give this a deeper listen later.

A very good album, that can probably get a higher score on more listens!

Super solid album, really loved most of it. Glad I finally listened to this song, from the last few I listened to werent my favorites. The hits were pretty amazing on this one, and it’s got a really good flow, might have to give it one more listen often on. Solid 4 to 5 on this one.

This underwhelmed my expectations. I really enjoyed the sounds and vibes of this album, especially "Let's Get Crazy," "Take Me With U" and of course "Purple Rain." But a lot of the songs in the middle were kind of middling, especially "When Doves Cry" and "I would die for U". Somewhere in the high 3 star, low 4 star territory.

mjög gott fönkað popp. ég er hrifinn, meira.

It’s a great record, but I can’t take some of the 80’s keyboard and drum sounds for very long.

This is a really solid album, Prince's talent and vocal range is very apparent. I would happily listen to it again if someone put it on, however it's not an album I would actively reach for.

1. Let's Go Crazy - Insane opener. Great energy, amazing ending. 2. Take Me With U - Didn't enjoy it as much as the first song, but not bad. 3. The Beautiful Ones - Liked this one a lot. Amazing vocals. 4. Computer Blues - Super groovy. Really enjoyed this one. 5. Darling Nikki - I think this is one of those songs I'd like more as I listened to it more. Middle of the song kicks ass. 6. When Doves Cry - I like the flow of this one. 7. I Would Die 4 U - Pretty good. 8. Baby I'm A Star - Forgettable on first listen. 9. Purple Rain - Understandable why this song is so iconic. Amazing finish to the album.

Can’t go wrong with some Prince.

Great album. Has all the best Prince songs. Bop all the way through.

The first side is honestly kind of meh, but then you flip it over and it's one great song after another, and this is more than enough to redeem this album.

I'm not really into Prince. It's just not my kind of music. But I'd be an idiot if I didn't recognize that I'm listening to some truly great music! plus: Purple Rain is a legendary song! 4 stars is good.

The title track and a few other songs are classics. It dips a bit in the middle. 4.5 srars

4/5, almost as good as I remember - a bit uneven.

Excellent. Wild. Sexy. Prince is king. Not all songs were for me. Nikki song was a trip. Much respect RIP

Really enjoy The Beautiful Ones. Fun voice inflections. Never realized Prince had such a unique vibrato. Darling Nikki is a really fun sound/melody. Fun, Scream, Guitar Solos, Horny, Harmonies, Non-sensical, Whimsy. i have finished album. conclusion: i am glad it is not more than 9 songs or less than 8. Album Title song good, best. Very nice instrumentation. 7.5/10.

transitions between songs are so smooth they roll right into one another sensual and sexy

Its good very strong standout tracks like lets go crazy, when doves cry or the title track purple rain but otherwise it remains a quite boring but great album.

Klassiker

Starts with Let's go crazy and ends with Purple Rain, it's not as strong through the middle but purple rain itself drags this up to a 4

I prefer Prince at his more mellow (see: adore) but this album is undeniably quality and undeniably fun. I find some of the instrumental choices to sound a bit dated, but that’s a minuscule complaint for such a great work.

A joy, a breeze! I don't know why I was bracing myself for something more *meandering* but I didn't need to. 4.5

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. So much more to the album than “Purple Rain”. Loved “When Doves Cry” and “I Would Die 4 U”. Sonically different than what I expected and that was the fun of it. It was also a short and sweet album. 9 songs in 43 mins.

Yep strong start love prince!! So cool! So many classics. Very horny guy

fun, funky, and a bit weird

Really solid album. I've never seen the Purple Rain movie and there were a few times when it seemed like the songs would be better for that but for the most part this is a great album 8/10

I feel like I need to actually watch the movie to fully understand this album, but there are so many great songs on here.

4.0 - Very Good

This album tests what it is exactly that my rating is supposed to reflect. Is it strictly my enjoyment? The quality of the album in an artistic sense? What exactly am I doing? Purple Rain is hugely nostalgic for me. At the risk of sounding sappy, I was falling hard for a beautiful girl at the time this was released. That summer, I came home from my freshman year of college, looking forward to seeing her more frequently. When Doves Cry was released in May just as I was beginning to travel back and forth from my hometown to spend evenings with my first true love. A 30 minute drive each way. Doves was constantly played on radio during these back and forth trips. Let’s Go Crazy followed mid-summer. So of course this album inspires deep wonderful feelings for me. Upon revisiting, while still nostalgic, it remains a terrific album. It dangerously skirts with an 80s sound, but to my ears Prince pulls it slightly away from being completely outdated. Mostly because the songs are interesting and he is one a hell of a guitar player. He’s also a great songwriter. And good songs hold up.

Liked it a lot more than I expected; didn't know he had such cute ones sound-wise?! LOVE the acknowledgement of female masturbation in Darling Nikki; very cool for the mid-80s! Purple Rain is the weakest song so its fame is inexplicable.

A really good album

Alright this is wonderful but I got bored during the first half of it. Let’s go crazy rules and the when doves cry to purple rain run is phenomenal. Everything after let’s go crazy but before doves sounds like it exists solely for the accompanying movie. Great movie though.

80s are not usually what I gravitate towards, but I did think that this is a great 80s albums relative to other 80s albums I'm familiar with. I found myself enjoying the the beat swaps in the middle of a lot of the songs. I appreciated the differing tempos across the album. I don't think that his vocals really stand out to me besides the screams and shrieks. I felt that the album got progressively stronger starting at Computer Blue. Most of the songs were fun to listen to and had many layers and textures in the beat. Prince obviously shreds on the guitar and Purple Rain rain is a classic for a reason; however, the song almost doesn't belong on the same record just by how different it is.

Great album. Opener is great. Beautiful ones is great. Darling Nicki is what I imagined every prince song to sound like. Side 2 to this record is even better. Only criticism is that sometimes the synths sound a little too ghostbusters, but ghostbusters kinda rules so whatever. I like princes shrieking on some of the tracks here, so good. Purple rain alone would have made this album worth listening to

Ach de Prince ...Verehrt und gfieret - zurächt, au wänn sieni Text mängisch Gränze überschrieted (Darling Nikki). Nüd mies. Min Favorit: When doves cry, hani dozumal gliebt.

Great but to my ears the 80’s production impacts the potential for five stars.

I mean it’s prince…

When this album popped up the day after 1999, I thought it was a cruel joke. 1999 was so irrelevant today that i couldn't wait for it to be over. In the spirit of the game, though, I popped on Purple Rain and heck yea. The songs are succinct, more inspired, and the whole thing just rips. Crazy what 2 years can do for an artist. This record is very much so one to listen to (several times) before you die. 1999 has come and gone, though, and we don't need it again.

Definitely better than Sign 'O' The Times and 1999, both of which I gave a 3. But there's something in Prince's style that always stops his music just short of being truly legendary. Maybe it's the lack of distinctive melodic hooks (in most tracks), where an album like Thriller excels in exactly that way. Even Let's Go Crazy, a song defined by its fast, rhythmic synths and drum machine – which is surely the perfect setup to an incredibly catchy hit – ends up just being a hit. Not catchy. At least, not in the sense that it'll be stuck in my head for the rest of the evening. Prince creates music that kind of goes in one ear and out the other (no doubt magnified by the overdone 80s production style), and for that I can hardly justify a 5-star review. But man, I completely understand why this guy was (and is!) so popular. He exudes allure, sexuality, mystery. Not just in his lyrics (which are suspect enough) but in his vocal delivery, his pained and lustful guitar playing, the contrasts between high and low energy. In these ways, where countless other artists miss the mark, Prince really delivers. No other famous artist has quite as high an innuendo-to-runtime density. The album art is hilarious to me, because it's so ugly it wraps back around to being kind of great. Purple and orange is a terrible colour duo. And those floral margins are completely unnecessary. I love it. Other highlights are the unexpectedly emotional ballad The Beautiful Ones, the otherworldly Darling Nikki, and the monumental title track. Dang, I wish I could give this album a higher rating. 4/5 Key tracks: Let's Go Crazy, The Beautiful Ones, Purple Rain

No soy muy fan de Prince pero este álbum está muy bien. Hay momentos a medias del álbum que me noto un poco cansado de oírlo, pero terminar con Purple Rain es perfecto para dejar un gran sabor de boca. Canción destacada: Purple Rain

Funny to get this album the day after I was conflicted about listening to Michael Jackson "Off the Wall." It was nice to be able to enjoy Prince's genius (which, let's face it, blows Michael Jackson out of the water) unencumbered by the baggage of the whole sexual assault of children. This album feels equally very much of its time and way ahead of its time in equal measure.

Another chance for Prince to achieve his greatest goal - convincing me that he really is all that. And do you know what? He's done well here. It feels redundant to point out that the guitar playing on here is absolutely [mind-blown emoji] throughout, but it can't pass unremarked. Overall the songs feel deeper than on 1999, and the big hits are beyond great. Despite that, there is a bit too much filler to get it into absolute classic territory. Needless to say, the 8 minute closing title track is the highlight; partly because it's dead good, and partly because it takes you straight back to a power ballads night, on your (increasingly sticky) knees, arms in the air as you bellow out the 45th chorus. Lovely stuff.

Purple rain is the only stand on song on here for me 😭

Started a 3, ended a low 4. The hits from the album are strong, the rest was okay. I don't think this is the best album ever, though. 4/5

The transition from I Would Die 4 U into Baby I'm A Star is just *chefs kiss*

18/02/25 Obviously Prince is a classic, and this was a good album.

I like Prince and Purple Rain is a masterpiece. It's a bit over the top and I think you need to be in the right mindset to really get into it. I was not digging Prince yesterday. Perhaps a different day and it's a 5.

A great album with some of his best work

Really liked this album

Prince sews together an epic here and puts his full range of creativity on display. Many hits with "Doves Cry" top track but the lesser played ones like "Computer Blue" are where you really get into the depths of his digital talents. Hard to see Prince as a baddass on a bike with the cover but the man/woman/alien? sure has left a mark on the music world. Need to watch the film again...3.58.

Purple Rain is an iconic album no doubt. It deserves the praise as it contains a handful of fun hits and wraps with one of the all time ballads with the title track. While it's difficult to divorce the album from the film, if you look at it as just an album it deserves to be on every list. Say what you will about Prince's personal life or ridiculous antics but the man knew how to write a tune and orchestrate a movement. One of the best showmen ever and Purple Rain is considered his peak by many. His Superbowl halftime show is one of those historical transcendent performances mainly due seeing Purple Rain during a rainstorm. 3.67 stars

So. Much. 80s. Here! I'm not really a Prince fan, and this may in fact be the first time I've heard this album beyond the four now-classic singles. That said, it's almost exactly what I expected it to sound like, and I enjoyed seeing the video for "Let's go crazy" and its concert shots; it highlight what an impressive performer he was as well as an accomplished musician. I'm also struck by how different and much more interesting Sinead O'Conner's cover is of "I would die 4 u". (Also hilarious to read that the song "Purple rain" was originally conceived as a country song collaboration with Stevie Nicks, but she freaked out when she got the music to write lyrics to.) I've never really understood why Michael Jackson had so much of a bigger fan base than Prince, given Prince's added depth of musical abilities, but I'm not sure Prince ever tried to cultivate his celebrity status the way Michael Jackson did. I do wonder if Prince tried to compete with Jackson, though, given that he produced and scored a feature-length film for "Purple Rain", which certainly beats out "Thriller" lengthwise if nothing else. And full credit to Prince that this album rarely sounds like a soundtrack, with a few exceptions like the oddball "Computer blue" track. Even though I'm not a big fan of his music or style, it's hard not to respect the magnitude of this album in his career.

Not my favorite Prince album though "When Doves Cry" is terrific and is the reason I'm giving this a 4.

Surprisingly enough I really like prince. Very funny lyrics as well

Really nice album with great guitar as expected. Flows really well.

Lets Go Crazy, Take me with you, When doves cry and Purple Rain are excellent songs that have aged pretty well - especially for 80s music (in my broad opinion, the 80s didnt age as well as 60s/70s sound ideas) I draw a lot of parallels between what PR is and what 1999 was (2 years apart - Purple Rain has the Revolution backing it). Everything ive read makes it seem like The Revolution reinvented Princes sound, but I disagree. Example: Lets Go Crazy and 1999 are both pretty much crowd pleasing singles with the same vibe I honestly like 1999 more as an album. With that said, Purple Rain (the song) is truly Princes masterpiece 3.5 stars and rounding up because i felt bad I didnt give 1999 4 stars

Started out slow. Let’s go crazy doesn’t grab me. But The Beautiful Ones rocked. I don’t often love screaming vocals but this song joined Oh Darling in my scream hall of fameDarling Nikki was weird and awesome. I think I get Prince now

I enjoyed this about the same as 1999. Some really fun songs - Let’s Go Crazy and Baby I’m a Star are my favorites. Not really a bad song on this album, but just don’t click completely with Prince. I didn’t know Prince and Darling Nikki was the original instigator for the Parental Advisory warning. I had such an obsession and fascination with any album that had that little sticker. I remember really wanting the first Sugar Ray album (because Fly was all over the radio in third grade) but it had a song that repeated “Cash, I need some fucking cash”, so while I was able to borrow the album from my baby sitter at the time and hear this piece of art, I was not able to lobby my parents to let me own it myself.

A great album that I don’t really resonate with. It absolutely feels like a moment in time and whenever i listen to Prince i think about my mom and how much she enjoyed it when it first came out. Ultimately not for me but I can see the greatness in it

Rock, Soul, 1984 -> 4

the epitome of horniness

Warm and a bit wobbly - lovely tone. Guitar solos? Drum solos?

At the top of his game.

One of the best to ever do it.

Purple rain es un temazo sideral

Not all of the album is my preference, but Prince does some really unique and creative things that are undoubtedly impressive.

This album is a ton of fun from start to finish. Groovy tunes, extremely technical guitar solos, and cool synth hooks. Not every track is a banger, but almost all of them are. I am so glad I got to hear some Prince.

Prince is not my favorite, but no respect the craft put into this album

1984. Purple Rain / When Doves Cry / I Would Die 4 U

Prince’s best?

Forgot how funky Prince was in the early days. And how good a guitar soloist he was. Definite 4/5 for me. :)

I ended up listening to the Deluxe Expanded Edition because it was the only one available on Youtube.... it had 35 songs and currently I'm on track #14. Even though I haven't finished it, I can tell the album is really good and I can tell why people love Prince so much. Great album!

Really solid. Not too insanely 80s with the effects which I appreciate

I've heard the big hits off this album countless times; however, this is my first time hearing the rest of the album and man, Prince was such a great song writer and lyricist. 3 Years an Audioslave movie watch party soon?

I also only knew the hits, which are superb, but had never heard the rest. Honestly, the other songs on this album are a bit underwhelming. The masturbating line in darling Nikki is rough. Still gonna give it a 4

The highs are about as good as it gets. The lows are not bad by any means, but there are a couple songs that I could live without. I’ve been really waffling between a 4 and 5. Might be harsh, but just doesn’t quite get there for me. 9/10

Classic. Also rather enjoyed the ones I didn't hear before like "Baby I'm a star" and "take me with you"

Otimo album Purple rain é um calssico e certamente um platina dobrado do gueto.

Baby I'm a Star was a surprise banger

First listen to this fully beyond the the title track and Doves. Surprised by how much I liked it. Was just a bit young for the Prince sensation
