First soul Album I've had. Can appreciate the record but afraid it's not for me

The first three songs are amazing! One banger after the other. The rest weren’t quite as good in my opinion. Overall an incredibly funky and decent record.

Found this very tough to review since this style of music is something I would never listen to and I therefore have very little to benchmark this against. A 2 seems harsh, but I'd only be giving it higher based on other people's reviews. For me, it wasn't rubbish, it was entertaining, but due to my own ignorance of the genre, I can't rate it particularly highly. Also the cover art is weird.

I'm sure we've had a bit of a boogie at Jane's at the end of a party to something like this - probably needs some sunshine, vino and company to really appreciate it . Quentin Tarantino may have used bits in films - or even Breaking Bad. Background music . !

42 minutes of salsa. I'm sure it's good if you like salsa but it's 40 minutes too much for me.

Solid 2.5. ‘Plastic’ and ‘Buscando Guayaba’ were catchy but overall, not really my genre.

"I guess I like my salsa like I like wasabi… just a touch." This comment sums up my feelings on this album, though admittedly I love salsa much more than wasabi. At best, I can only give it 2 stars as after about a minute I was thinking, no more please...and really the rest of the album had me staring out the window, dreaming of better listening days ahead. Yep, 2 "bored to tears" stars. (And don't get me started on the album cover...wtf?)

Couple tunes were a vibe - instrumentally really good but not something I’d come back to

this was really fun! Some songs were better than others (I didn’t love the middle one) but a nice vibe. I wouldn’t think of returning to it but I’m not mad at it.

A lot of salsa sounds the same to me and this was pretty good but didn’t strike me as next level.

I’ve never heard of this, and the cover makes me think I’m going to hate it. … Okay, didn’t hate it, it was very summer-y or something. I lack the skills to understand why this particular example of the sound was chosen, but I trust there was a good reason. But seriously, I hate the album art. (ntm.)

I’ve heard a lot of criticism about this list about it being too eurocentric but I don’t really find that to be much of an issue because it’s mainly consumed in the west.. idk. I like that there is variety but that doesn’t need me to like everything that deviates from the norm of this list.. not sure why I feel the need to justify myself

I dont really like the genre either which doesnt help. I would say this is not designed for me especially as I cant follow the "story". I am sure its lovely...

Had high expectations with the opening disco line but it didn’t come back to that or move anywhere past what it decided to do instead

Very energetic album with some strange sounds at points, no idea what they were singing about but it was catchy. Wouldn’t listen again.

The opening few bars of the first track had me thinking I might've got this album wrong.... But no, it became exactly what I thought it would be soon after. I'm just not into Cubano music. It's not offensive at all, and the instrumentation and vocals appear to be well done, but I just don't jive with the musical style. Unfortunately I don't speak Spanish, so I can't relate at all to the lyrics. And the musical style elicits dancing, which is not in my blood. To my ears, all the songs sound the same. I didn't make it far into the album before I had to give up. Will not finish and probably will not go back.

This is pleasant background music, I am definitely dancing in my chair a bit. I did lose it a bit, with the bing bing bing part of Buscando Guayaba, cracked me up.

I must have played GTA: Vice City for over 1000 hours. I was heading for that magical 100% stat – god, I remember it so clearly – when I decided to save the game. I hit “save” for no particularly good reason, and at the exact same moment my mum cut the power in the house (while preparing to replace a bulb, if I remember correctly). And that was that. Gone. Down from 96% to 32% like that. Returned to the lobby of the Ocean View Hotel, I could scarcely believe what I was seeing. Sure, I and everyone else who’d ever played a video game that utilised an external memory card had been warned countless times that power loss during saving could lead to “something” … but this? Playing in the lobby, Unaesta with “La Vida Es Una Lenteja” – a made up band with a made up song, one that will for my whole life be the soundtrack of a very strange emotion: an appreciation of loss, with no sense of having actually lost anything. (I’m not sure my mum actually even knows it happened; feankly, I wouldn’t expect her to care either way.) I enjoyed this album, it was fine company while rambling around the kitchen preparing a couple of dinners. But I’ll be damned if it didn’t pull me back into that moment 20 years ago over and over again. A strange seed to have sown, but I guess that’s how it goes.

Foi um disco agradável, mas pra mim, ele se tornou som ambiente logo na segunda faixa. Dali pra frente, o álbum falhou em capturar minha atenção novamente. De certo, é um gênero animado. Músicas para festas. Como eu havia dito, é agradável. Todos os seus elementos são bem feitos e produzidos. Não há nada aqui para reclamar. A não ser pelo fato que eu não senti absolutamente nada ouvindo essas canções. São dançáveis, não irei negar. Mas eu escolheria uma trilha sonora diferente para minhas festas. 2/5

Happy and energetic business. I can respect the musicianship, but it’s never a genre I’m going to choose to play.

A very different thing to what Im used to, so its difficult to score. The bass playing was great, but the drum patterns were obviously going to become repetative. The novelty wore off about half way through before it became a chore. If I could dance then I might have given it a 5. I can't, so as a less interactive listening experience its a 1. However, with one of the duo called 'Willie Colon', my imagination runs riot and have to snigger. Just for that its a 2.

Siembra has the pep of any salsa album but does pack a little extra spice. Colon brings swag and has some weird fun on "Buscando Guayaba"...not sure what's going on but I dig. Kinda just another set of salsa tunes though. Is the cover supposed to mean Big Willie is "planting" his seed and having tons of babies? Siembra is one that may grow on you as you keep listening but this go around I'm giving it 2 stars.

Wasn't excited about a salsa album but it wasn't as bad as I thought it could be. Nothing I will ever revisit but at least I got to enjoy some Spanish vocals for 45 minutes. Not sure what makes this something I need to listen to before I die but I guess this is the best selling salsa album of all time so I guess it's good I can now check that box. 2.07 stars

Salsa, more than a couple of songs is just too much for me. Like the love boat but in Spanish.

I know Ruben's name and his movies but I've never given his music a listen. I'm not into Latin music at all, nice in the background maybe but I don't enjoy the overall rhythms and not understanding the lyrics. This was no different, I couldn't tell you if this is good or cutting edge or influential. I was shocked by the # of listens on Spotify. People appreciate this album so I respect that. Over 168M listens for "Pedro Navaja", I didn't think that was the best track either. The whole thing sounded like part of a Latin music stars visit to Fantasy Island or that time on the Love Boat when they pull him up on stage. Background music at best. 2 stars, it did nothing for me but it may be a cornerstone album in Latin music.

I like salsa! I like the tropical vibes, the amazing percussion, the toe tapping rhythms. But I do not like this much salsa all at once. It's good, it's fine. But unless I'm down south on a beach or by the pool or exploring a lil Spanish town...I doubt I'd be throwing this on in its entirety again anytime soon. 2/5

Is salsa a condiment? What is a condiment? I'd say it's a food that is typically eaten on top of another food. Do people eat salsa by itself? No, they don't. On top of chips, burritos, tacos. Never alone. Is this a debate or am I making it up? I love a good salsa. As far as salsa music goes, I can take or leave it.

Not surprising that it has great energy since it's salsa music, but the similar tempos and drum patterns made it sound repetitive. It also didn't wow me - there were some songs I wouldn't mind listening to again but others were boring, though I'll admit I may be too hard on the album because it's so far outside of my usual tastes.

It was good for background music. Maybe if I spoke Spanish, this album would have more of an impact. All the compositions blended together where I could not distinguish one song from another.

The most entertaining thing about this album is that 'Willie Colon' sounds like a gay man's bum condition; and Ruben (pronounced rubbin') Blades sounds like a lesbian sexual position. Aside from that, the big highlight is that intro - the album opens like any Pharell Williams via Nile Rodgers production you care to mention. It's from 1978, and it sounds like something from 25 years later, with a disco beat and sumptuous strings. It's marvelous. Unfortunately, that soon gives way to samba stylings that I'd have difficulty picking apart from the backing track of a Mexican salsa class on a Tuesday night in the Midlands. It takes from the ready-made salsa toolkit of percussion-driven rhythms, brassy horn stabs and montuno piano - and to my untrained ear I hear nothing here to differentiate it from countless others. I'd much rather Beuna Vista, I didn't really get the great appeal of this. The music feels saccharine and the words, if that indeed is where the magic lies, are over my head. Some nice touches sprinkled throughout.

Not the album for me, it was just the same sounding song over and over, probably my least favorite album I've listened to yet!

Duo didn’t prepare me well enough for this one. At first, I wanted to get up and dance, but I was driving down the freeway, so wasn’t going to do that. After a while, all of the songs started to sound the same, and I was ready for it to end. I think I need to plan my next vacation to Mexico.

This is #day254 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… I consider myself an open-minded person, especially after 254 days of this, but not quite enough to embrace Salsa. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing bad about the music, it's just way outside my wheelhouse. That said, I can now say I've heard something from Panama. Yay! This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day255.

Looking at the cover art and reading the description I did not have high hopes. When that bass started on the first track I thought whoa maybe this is going to be awesome. Then about 40 secs later that all just evaporated…..

I saw a salsa band (Groupo Fantasmo) live, once. It was great fun and this is fun music, too. But listening without dancing is rather monotonous - I guess my point is that this is LIVE music.

Damn, this album is funky. While I did enjoy a lot of the musical elements, there are moments when it dragged quite a bit. I still enjoyed it want to check out more from these guys, but this one didn't do as much for me. 2/5

I like the horns, and I lack the appreciation of Latin rhythms. It's odd, as I'm drawn to the rhythm of Hip Hop, Reggae, Ska, Afro, Rock... But most Salsa grates on me after a couple of songs.

Salsa Album aus klassischen Bigband Arrangements die auch aus den 50ern stammen könnten. Passende Hintergrundmusik zu einer schwülen Latin-Nacht mit Cocktails und Standparty. Darüberhinaus gehende Begeisterung entsteht aber nicht.

Overall - Liked it, didn't love it. The musicians and the arrangements are great. It's kind of like actual salsa. It really works with everything it does, but you do have to switch it the condiments and you're not just going to eat a bowl of it. If the album were instrumental-only, and the arrangement was shortened by like 15 minutes, I would love this album. Maybe even add it to the library. Sadly not today, Plastico - Blew me away with the opening. Slappy bass, disco strings/horns, vibey vocals. Then it morphed into salsa. Buscando Guayaba - Basically exactly what you would expect from vocal jazz if it was salsa-based. It's almost a commercial for morphing into salsa. Pedro Navaja - Basically the salsa version of Mack the Knife. Opens with an a police siren, then it morphed into salsa. María Lionza - Opens with an awesome, dissonant, dark piano and chanting "oh!"... then it morphed into salsa. Ojos - It's just salsa. Dime - Super catchy piano and bass progression, the stabby horns give it a nice melody to play with. Even the singing doesn't bring out too much of the salsa. Then, about two and a half minutes in, it starts to morph into full salsa. Then, for the last minute or so, it has a nice vocal jazz break/outro where the vocals are way too loud. Siembra - Really nice outro and string arrangement! But, at this point, I am physically tired of listening to salsa.

BL: never heard of these artists or this album. So it’ll be a complete blind listen. AL: an amazing album to dance to? Undoubtedly. An amazing album to sit down and listen to? Maybe not quite as much. The real appeal here are the drum lines and the percussion. The Latin beats are very inspiring and make me want to get the drum set out and practice. However I do find the problem is with this genre is it does get a bit same-y. Maybe part of this is down to me not understanding the lyrical content, but then again there are bands like Rammstein where I understand very little of the lyrical content and I still enjoy it. Definitely worth the listen but not one of my favourite albums on the generator so far FT: “Ojos” 2/5

Not really my thing, I don’t feel it has aged all that great to my ears.

First impression of the album cover was: is this the Salsa version of Notorious B. I. G.'s Ready To Die? I only know very little, if anything about this genre... And nothing about this artist And that's about it. So this is as blind as listen gets. I had to brief myself on what's this is... Apparently these artists are one of the best selling Salsa artists. One of them is a trombonist. I note the trombonist because I really think his playing adds to this album. And his playing is tasteful and accompanies, but also stands out amongst the rest of the vast amount of instruments that are playing (almost at all times). Not a fan of this genre, and wouldn't seek out any of it. But it sounds fun. Reminds me of when I was in New Orleans. Between Salsa and jazz, every bar had one or the other playing live music. Lots of fun! I prefer the jazz over the former stuff.

Siembra is the second album by Panamian singer and songwritter Rubén Blades and Puerto Rican-American trombonist Willie Colón. It is considered the best selling salsa album in the history of salsa and Latin music, and was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007. It has sold 3 million copies worldwide and almost every song has been a hit at one time or another in various Latin American countries. This is definitely an awesome salsa album so give it a listen if you like that genre. I liked the groovy album, but the lyrics in Spanish didn't help me enjoy it.

Offensive Lineman Willie Colon moonlighting as a musician? Sure. Siembra misses me with the language barrier, I'd have liked the funky opening track to be a sign of the rest of it but, alas, it ends up being El Generico and not in the good Sami Zayn way. 2.

So the first minute of this is disco, and then the rest slips pretty comfortably into standard Latin American salsa stuff. I really struggle to differentiate much between most of this, my Spanish isn't good enough to get the lyrics unless I really concentrate (and this kind of music doesn't lend itself to intense concentration on the lyrics), and it ends up all sounding perfectly pleasant but lacking in any kind of oomph. Not an unpleasant listen, but no reason to recommend. 2/5.

No hablo bien el espanol, pero esta musica me recuerda a Puerto Rico. Me encanta Puerto Rico y todas las hermosas playas. Not quite my thing, but does make me think of beautiful PR. 2 I hate this album cover. What’s with the babies?? And why do they look badly Photoshopped onto an illustration from a 1970s children’s book?? What does this have to do with the music?? Anyway, that out of the way, fine salsa music. Far from my favorite genre, but there were a handful of standout moments here. In particular, I really liked how Plástico kicked off with a unique, disco-style opening and then rounded out with a series of shouted call and response lines. Looking at the lyrics, it seems he was calling out an attendance list of Latin American countries with the backup singers responding “Present”, so I guess this is pretty much the salsa equivalent of California Love. I also liked the West Side Story references on Pedro Navaja, especially because I think they were used in a sarcastic way to complement an ongoing criticism of the American Dream and lifestyle, though I can’t speak Spanish, so I’m really taking Genius’ word on that one. But yeah, even though it’s supposedly a pretty politically charged album thematically, musically most of it sounds like pretty standard salsa fare. Buscando Guayaba sounded like borderline elevator music. Ojos had a bit of a hook to it with its repetition of the title, but beyond that, not much else of note. I said it before and I’ll say it again - not my type of music, and I likely wouldn’t put it on in my own time. That being said, I’m a very lyric-driven person, so I would maybe re-visit and learn to appreciate more if I ever became proficient in Spanish.

Bit weird

I'm not well versed with the genre enough to say if it's actually generic but it feels generic too me. The sample sources were a fun surprise tough!

What sinks this album for me is the track length. The instrumentals and vox are well-executed and pleasant, but wear quite thin after 5-7 minutes. I'm sure being able to follow the narrative would make things a bit more interesting, but my Spanish is way too rusty to keep up here.

Sorry, but once you've heard one salsa track, you've heard them all. This is just dance music, and I expect it's very good for dancing to - but I don't dance so it's no use to me. I prefer to listen to music.

It was very hard for me to discriminate as to why this is a standout probably owing to my lack of deep exposure to this genre. To me it sounded like every other album of the type that I've heard at restaurants and clubs. Pleasant, but nothing special.

Although this wasn't a "bad" album, Salsa really isn't my jam, after a few songs it becomes annoyingly repetitive for me.

p414. 1978. 1 star. The only salsa I like is as a dip for tortilla chips. This might have done better if I were on a beach in Rio de Janeiro, but on a cold grey wet day in Stoke this album loses most of its appeal. Hard pass from me.

Siembra by Willie Colón and Rubén Blades is really not my kind of music. Salsa with touches of jazz just doesn’t do much for me personally. That said, if it wasn’t for this challenge I would never have listened to an album like this, so I can appreciate the opportunity to experience something completely different. There were moments that sounded familiar, especially Plástico and Buscando Guayaba, which I’m sure I must have heard somewhere before. But after listening to the full album, one of my main takeaways was that a lot of the songs blended together for me stylistically. The album is clearly very well produced, and the musicianship is excellent throughout. You can tell how talented everyone involved is, and I understand why this album is considered important within Latin music. It just doesnt work for me. I found it quite long, repetitive and difficult to stay engaged with by the end. I do respect the international side of this challenge though, because albums like this push me into genres and cultures I would never normally explore. Even when I don’t enjoy them, it’s still interesting to hear something outside my usual taste. Favourite tracks: Plástico was quite a nice track. Least favourite tracks: Nothing was terrible, it just wasn’t really for me. Album artwork: A bizarre album cover, it looks like a colourful cartoon advert for Pampers.

Just dull

Trying really hard to be objective here despite my inclination to try to find and focus on positive aspects of the music, but I have to admit that I frankly do not care for or about this album. I'm sure it's good if you're into the genre since it's on this list (and the musicians were talented), but listening to it for me was such a slog that I finally broke my rule about listening to everything all the way through. The energy and overall tone was consistent to a fault, which made the long track times feel like a chore. A few minutes into Maria Lionza I decided I'd give each song an honest attempt for 60+ seconds, but it was obvious based on the rest of the album that if I didn't care for the first minute I wouldn't care for the rest of the track so I gave myself permission to skip at that point. I ended up skipping each of the remaining songs after that attempt. And honestly I typically like this sort of thing, but I just wasn't getting hooked by any of it. Unfortunately it's gonna be a one-star for me.

Lively, well-oiled grooves built from bright brass lines, busy percussion, rolling piano figures, and clear, narrative vocals move this salsa album like a beautifully organized dance hall—perfectly suited for motion and social energy, yet as listening music it feels too functional to invite deeper attention.

A nice change of direction in my first taste of salsa & my first taste of Spanish in this project. The music is bright & shiny and warm, very inviting initially. I just wish I spoke Spanish as the lyrics are clearly a key part of this, there to be learnt & sung along to but I can’t understand them so all that is lost on me. The salsa music sets a wonderful atmosphere but if you can’t understand the lyrics then it soon becomes directionless. After a while it becomes showbizzy and starts to grate. To be clear though this is not the LPs fault that I do not speak Spanish that is my fault & problem & a reminder of how anglicised culture has become. I can see how important this music & these lyrics must be to so many people but I have to mark it low based on how it makes me feel. And I feel I really want it to end as it’s going around in circles but I see if you’re dancing then salsa would be tribal trance. But for me salsa is just one of the worst musical genres.

I didn't even notice when this ended and went to shuffle. Like Phyl, on a different day I may have taken this in more.
