riffs básicos encima de arreglos primitivos.
Just very generic Britpop music, nothing too special about this
This album reminds me of U2 if they were a bit more dance focused with the music they produced. That is not really a good thing in my eyes, and the lead singer sounds like the guest singer in Gorillaz's "DARE" when he was drunk at that one live performance. Could be worse, but did definitely got on my nerves at points.
Pretty sure I've heard of this band but never listened before. Probably won't again.
Didn't really get into this one, slightly lame psychy stuff
This didn’t leave much of an impact on me.
Just ok. "Step On" was pretty catchy.
This is ...fine. Nothing that special. I've heard better late 80-early 90's albums
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah it was alright, would have preferred to listen to the original instead of collectors edition Favourite song: Track 1 - Kinky Afro
Altamente ignorável, não incomoda, só que não chega nem perto de empolgar. Uma audição tolerável apenas.
Ever song was roughly the same. Pretty easy to understand why this didn't catch on in the states. 2/5
Honestly it's just unimpressive rock that has a typical late 70s/early 80s sound to while shifting into the now-known 90s sound. It's kinda harmless and forgettable, though the lead singer has a HORRID voice. 4/10.
With the first album that was recommended from the Happy Mondays, I was wondering if I had heard of the band before. Pills 'n' Thrills And Bellyaches answers that question. I've heard three of the tracks from this album. Happy Mondays approach sounding like things that I might listen to (or may have listened to at the time that the album came out). "Step On" was the most fun song on the album. "Kinky Afro" is interesting, but didn't make it into my list for a later replay. There were tracks on this album that I wouldn't want to hear again, and I'm guessing that if I listened closer to all of the lyrics I would find even more. Those tracks sink the album below 3 stars for the rest of this "okay, I guess" kind of album.
I've never heard of Happy Mondays before, but based on my reading about them before listening to the album, I figured I'd enjoy it. Unfortunately, I was pretty underwhelmed by this album. It was inoffensive, and I enjoyed the instrumentation, but lyrically and vocally, this album wasn't really doing it for me. I thought the second half of the album was definitely better than the first, but it still wasn't enough to hook me in.
About halfway through the second song, I convinced that I was going to like this album. Then the rest of the album happened.
I don’t care for the vocals nor the sound of the instruments.
Well, they got the bellyaches part right.
Pretty alright until Bob's Yer Uncle. The instrumentals are good but besides that nothing stuck out too much. Fave track(s): Kinky Afro
Nonsense. A dated 90's groove does NOT make a song. Don't understand the hype around this band at all.
This did nothing for me.
There are two tracks on this that properly slam - step on and loose fit. The rest is atrocious garbage.
Nja. Inte så kul utan Bez.
This felt as forgettable as U2
Suffered through this one. Maybe more here than I give it credit for, but I just hear the pitchy off-rhythm attitude of the singer and grate my teeth.
Genres: Madchester, baggy, rock Formed: Salford, England in 1980 Run time: 15 songs, 1 hour, 12 min The third studio album by the group. They were big in the Manchester scene and are synonymous with 90’s Raves. Spotify: Least popular song: over 292k Most popular song: over 47.5M plays. I didn’t like their music at the time and most of it I still don’t. Due to prolonged exposure, I do enjoy a couple of tracks: Track 1, “Kinky Afro” and track 8, “Step On”. Most of the other songs didn’t receive much airtime (because they are bland album fillers). Some of the songs were very significant in the 90’s Rave scene. On the whole the lyrics aren’t very profound and don’t always make sense. You could call that poetic licence but I suspect it was due to being “off their faces” on Ecstasy. The tunes are quite chilled, relaxed and very laid-back. Listen Again?: No My Rating: **
Wtf did I just listen to? Seems to really be an album of a specific time and scene. I preferred the songs that were more subtle in their inclusion of the dance in dance-rock. Bob's Yer Uncle is the first time I've had to skip a song among the 20 or so albums I've reviewed so far. The lyrics are dumb AF, and the supposed hit, Step On, is... interesting. Not really good. I could see myself enjoying this a lot more at 14. Doesn't hold up at all. 4/10, mostly for some occasionally cool guitar.
Liked it more than the other Happy Mondays one but still not very much
hubo una parte q me gusto idk
I saw that the producer is Paul Oakenfold and I've been a fan of his work. This definitely got his touch as there's a constant underlying electronic sound to the album. The songs and the album as a whole is nothing special though. Sure it's not bad but an album you have to hear before you die? Not really.
Not bad, better than I expected
I can see how they were influenced by Midnight Oil and influential on EMF, but Midnight Oil and EMF are so much better I can’t justify anything more than a 2.
meh
Not my cuppa tea
90s garage band if the band had unlimited instruments. Half expecting a kazoo to come out of the woodwork. Piano saves this band tho
One of the most forgettable albums I've ever heard in my life. I honestly believe that this is as creative and exciting this band can get, which just isn't that great. It wasn't painful to listen to, I just couldn't remember a single track off of it to save my life. 2/5
Enjoyable but nothing that stood out to me. Just solid jams n good production, but the sameness of a lot of the songs made it boring to listen to in one sitting. Great in parts but could of been way better.
Owned it, loved it back in the day, seen them live a few times - always a party, but the music itself...not so good really - not quite appealing to the lowest common denominator, but close
It all sounds the same.
Didn't really enjoy it.
Groovy & Pretentious
Bad brit pop. Can hear a lot of Stones and Beatles influence in there.
Look I'm both too old and not on enough drugs.
Not a fan
Heard before: no I’d never heard the Happy Mondays before, but had heard of them. It wasn’t what I expected. It was fine… maybe taking substances would improve the experience?
Bit too eclectic for me.
Kinky Afto was pretty catchy. The rest of the album seems ok. I think this one will take longer for me to get to know. It is my kind of music - just never heard it before. For now, I'll give it 2.5/5...
4/12/22 Ehhhhh.
Oddly exciting name for an album that's just tame britpop-type stuff. Nothing awful but absolutely nothing standout either. I'll have forgotten everything about this by mid morning. Early afternoon update: yep, long since all forgotten. 2/5.
2.5
Best Song: Step On. Their most listened to song, probably the best on the album, but the lyrical patterning in some sections seems pretty derivative of The Beatles' "Come Together", so it's not even that original. Worst Song: Bob's Yer Uncle. Why does the title invoke an uncle, but the song contains lyrics like "Can I take you from behind and make you live?" Was this song supposed to sound so predatory? Perhaps the least sexy attempt at being sexy I've ever heard in a song. The flute/sax combo was nice though. Overall: Bland and basic. Sounds something like an amalgam of U2 and a Bowie cover band. The backing instrumentals were nice and funky in sections, but not enough to make up for the rest of the album. Another album that was gratuitously added to reach a nice number like 1001.
Quite an empty sound. I do like the "beachiness" feel, but I think there are better versions of that sound.
Mostly forgettable 90s indie rock. Some cool sounds but that’s about it
Sound got really old quick. Songs are ok if not all pretty much the same. Nothing I'd want to go back to though
I did not dig it very much
The music took me on a fun little adventure, but the singing/lyrics made me want to turn around and go home.
I've never experienced an album so forgettable that I would forget what it sounded like while I was listening to it before.
Super generic. Didn’t do it for me as it was pretty basic background Brit pop. The remixes at the end of the deluxe album were excruciating. Fave track: Step On
ok. strange. Wont listen again probably. 3/10
I really can't say I needed to hear this album before I die
This one isnt intended to be absorbed on airpods in your house. I think you had to be there in the clubs. Loose Fit is fun.
4.5
Very basic lyrics, vocals and style. Didn’t do much for me. No real highlights.
didn't like them then, don't like them now. Dennis and Lois was a cool track. the rest can go jump in a lake.
Mediocre
not vibing with this album art. the one on spotify is slightly better. beginning sounds just fine. don't love the vocals. kinda liked the second song. third song doesn't sound bad either but i'm not interested at all so far. voice is getting grating, please stop whining sir. 'loose fit' is a mood. on track 7 and i'm so bored. doesn't sound bad but ehh. idk.
Kind of ok. Not really my thing these days.
2.5
It was ok
MotA: Step On "Son, I'm 30 / I only went with your mother 'cause she's dirty"
This album highlights the British influence behind the 1001 list. The album is OK, but does not deserve 1001 recognition. It was the domestic commercial success for Happy Mondays, explaining why it’s on the list. It was rated as the 31st and 51 greatest British album by Q Magazine and Channel 4 viewers. I cannot understand these rankings. Entertainment Weekly was more reserved in giving it a C+ rating. That’s more like it but still too generous based on how little I like the lead singers voice.
2.5
Started off well enough but I lost interest after a couple of songs. It was ok enough to listen to but not as good as a lot of 3s. The remixes definitely did not help.
I'm just not digging this but I can't place why. 2.5 if I could, but I guess it gets a 2 because I can't really say I liked it for a 3.
I jus’t don’t love cocaine enough.
Didn’t thrill me
Nicht schlecht aber auch weitgehend verzichtbar
Prefiro outras musicas do Happy Mondays
Me no likey
1.5 - madchester stuff. nice but not my thing
Mooo
Unremarkable. 2.5
Meh
Välillä meinas lähteä lentoon mutta ei sittenkään. Ei jäänyt yhdellä kerralla mieleen
Got the same thing out of this album that I got out of Primal Scream's record. Whatever these people were on in Madchester, must've been good. It's fine. Just too long and kind of hazy after a while. Favorite tracks: "God's Cop", "Donovan"
1990. Key Songs: Kinky Afro, Step On
It was fine. A regular degular rock album. It sounded good tho, and combine that with it mixing in some lite dance elements, I could see how it might have been like “wooaahh” in 1990.
Singer can't sing, instruments are annoying. Why is this album here?
🤮 gross
Did not enjoy this album. I thought I liked Kinky Afro and God's Cop at first but listened to the rest of the album and realized I didn't. Could easily never listen to this album again and live a happy life.
Holy repetitive boring slop. I was intrigued after "God's Cop" but after that I sort of zoned out and forgot that this album was playing until "Step On". That's when I unfortunately realized I had half an hour left. I did not enjoy this album. It had a couple moments but it's really just pick a loop of sound and mumble some ripped off Rolling Stones lyrics over it and call it a day. The album cover is the most colorful thing about this album and I'm a little annoyed I spent an hour of my life listening to this. 2/10
Where’s the happy? The dreaded Brit pop album strikes again. I think I made it through all the Oasis albums but now this. This whole mess is convoluted and tuneless. The one genre missing on this list of 1001 albums , the most influential genre of the last 30 years, is rap (hip hop). To be really representative of a good music, the list leads to be a bit less white centric.
The author seems to love this Brit/Electronica/Pop stuff. And for that I'd like to take a Louisville Slugger to his head about 700 times for making my ears hurt. Three 1 stars in a row can we make it four tomorrow?
107. Pills 'n' Thrills And Bellyaches - Happy Mondays (1990) 6.9.26 Variety: 2 Adequacy: 1 Listenability: 1 Uniqueness: 2 Emotionality: 1 = 1.4 rounded down to a 1 "I think I'm dumb/ Or maybe just happy/ Think I'm just happy" Not looking forward to this one. I've heard this one before as it was highly recommended, and was supposed to be one of those important 90s albums. Beginning of an era or some such. Spoilers, I did not like it one bit, and actually found it to be pretty obnoxious. We'll get into why as we go track by track. It's been a good twenty years too, so maybe I'll be a bit more receptive this go around. THE TRACKS "Kinky Afro" - This one starts off ok enough, with some very ( in retrospect) Britpoppy sounds. The psychedlic-lite jangling guitars and the synth strings are the best thing going on here though as we're introduced to Ryder's awful talk singing, which is a major issue I have with the ban. That sort of thing tries my patience even when its used well enough. You have to be playing at a very high level to get away with it in my opinion in any sort of rock form, and Ryder just does not cut it for me. See Rob Birch of Stereo MCs for an example of someone pulling this sort of thing off way better. And its still not something I'll ever love. But birch oozes style and plays into the music where Ryder just can't be bothered to do anything but stay caught up. That's even completely discounting the quality of his voice, which, though points for distinctiveness, is poor. And its not an accent thing. Chris Difford pulls off a great version of this in Squeeze's "Cool for Cats", which comes across as funny, charming , and casually, well... cool in all the ways this track fails. And he's not regular singer - that's a one-off gimmick track. Save this sort of thing for effect , don't base your whole band concept around it. "God's Cop" - This is where they lose me. The jammy, loose, dance forward rock is just not a form that works for me. It has none of the deep groove and powerful bass and drums drive of funk and it lacks the bombast of and ferocious tempo of hardcore. It's neither fish nor foul, and ends up reminding mostly of the vibes of something like when hippies are "dancing" to Country Joe and the Fish or some other such nonsense. "Donovan" - We get some world music vibes to start with which could go somewhere interesting. Nope. Just more of the exact same vocal performance. And the music transforms into another messy jam, barely held together by the guitarist. Whay do I know who Bez is but not this Mark Day guy? So far he seems to be the only person of note here. And he's showing everyone up with some very basic stuff. "Grandbag's Funeral" - A Beatlesly guitar riff opens this one up and it seems like it might actually develop into a rock song for minute before Ryder stumbles through the thing, and Day is forced to play around him. We just get endless variations on the opening riff. This was rough. "Loose Fit" - Another intriguing opener. This one actually has some atmosphere and Ryder tones it way down to almost a whisper. I could imagine this being on that one Jesus Jones album. You know with their one hit. The band keeps this one relatively tight and traditionally structured as well, so it has an actual form. Imagine that. Was worried they would not stick the landing, but mission accomplished. "Dennis and Lois" - We get their version of a funk song here. I think. Just the weeniest, bassless funk I've ever heard? I've read that this whole scene, and this album in particular was an influence on U2's Achtung Baby. And I can sort of see it with the dance rock grooves and slight crunchiness on this track. But hate to say U2 stole your ideas and vastly improved on them by making them feel BIG. I could imagine a version of this with the energy cranked up about another 70%, and some huge bass and more interesting persussion hitting much better than this. "Bob's Yer Uncle" - Yikes. Ryder listened to some Leonard Cohen just before recording this and has some ideas I guess. This is straight up bad. The flute comes in and attempts to liven things up, but it's a lost cause. Remove the sleezy vocals and we're left with a track best left on the cutting room floor of a Crash Bandicoot soundtrack. "Step On" - This was not much of a step up. The piano bits help a bit, but Ryder has moved on to a Michael Hutchence voice and that combined with the out of nowhere background vocals that seem like they were beamed in from a totally different album make this one a colorless stew of too disparate elements. "Holiday" - This one blew completely past me as I had moved on to my final thoughts and did not make even the slightest impression on me. "Harmony" - Finally here at the end we get one more track that, as slow and uninteresting as it is, at least feels like a wholly conceived and executed piece. It doesn't wander off into 12 directions at once, and has an identifiable vibe. For most other bands this would be them warming up though. HIGHLIGHTS - "Loose Fit" MIDLIGHTS - "Kinky Afro" - "Dennis and Lois" - "Harmony" LOWLIGHTS - "God's Cop" - "Donovan" - "Grandbag's Funeral" - "Bob's Yer Uncle" - "Step On" - "Holiday" FINAL THOUGHTS This was pretty much as awful as I remembered it being. I tried to remove all the outside knowledge of the band from my mind as I listened, and was mostly successful, though I will say I still cannot understand the urge to celebrate all the crazy awful behavior of these ( now senior citizen) former stars as cute hijinks. These guys are still pretty beloved as personalities across the pond, and who knows maybe they are much wiser with age, and maybe huge in the charity world or something. But there was a similar thing that happened with Motley Crue in the states where their 80s debauchery is looked back on with rose tinted glasses and they have since been ( mostly ) embraced as minor legends. Fine. People like to party. I get it. On the basis of the music alone, I truly don't understand it though. This just seems like a movement you had to have been there for I guess. Like maybe this band was a revelation to a citizenry that was starved of pop culture that invited this sort of party aesthetic and the Happy Mondays just happened to be in the right place at the right time? Anyway, Ryder's voice grates on me, and the musical load seemed to be entirely carried by the guitarist, who wasn't doing anything amazing. I'll add that I learned the band has one more album on the list. Can't wait. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - You can keep this one FURTHER LISTENING - Doubt by Jesus Jones - Connected by Stero MCs - The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses - Lovegod by the Soup Dragons - Schubert Dip by EMF - Screamadelica by Primal Scream - Tubthumper by Chumnbawanba
Pedestrian bullshit, not my jam
Pretty groovy if I do say so myself. Fav song is ‘Kinky Afro’.
i am...overstimulated. this is my first 1 star album...
did not listen
я устал...
Musically bland and repetitive, and Shaun Ryder's style of singing (sprechgesang, I believe) robs these songs of any melody that might have been used as a mitigating factor. I'm sure that records like this are often judged, in part, for their importance to once scene or another, which is no guarantee of quality in my opinion. In any case, 'madchester' was tedious and this album was an hour and ten mins that I wished would go quicker
People like listening to this style of singing?
The Stone Roses debut is absolutely amazing. And there were a few other albums from the scene that are worth hearing. But there was a lot of garbage that washed up on the beach the next morning. Including this nonsense. Over-produced tracks cynically built up from the Madchester cliches, fronted by an atonal meat-head. (Seriously, Sean Ryder is, artistically, like a British version of Kid Rock.) The inclusion of this album is just more confirmation that while Dimery's concept is great, and he's clearly paid attention to certain scenes over the course of his life, he does not have much of an ear for music.
Jesus FUCK, WHY SO MUCH BRITPOP. Fuck off already.
this did absolutely nothing for me
Really? Another "Brit synth house LP you must listen to before you die." No I don't, and I won't.
Oakenfold remixes slightly improved, but not by much.
Garbage
-1 star if i could give except for 0.75 of one song
laughable
Definitely not.
Awful
Didn't dig it.
Not sure what this is, I feel like I've heard of this band before but don't recognize anything on this album. Not sure why this is on this list. Pretty mediocre music at best. Damn, this album just plain sucks. Did not finish, just wanted to make it go away.
Couldn't really get into it
Entirely forgettable except for Bob's Yer Uncle but that's memorable for the wrong reasons.
One banger, the rest is dated
Pretty much all the songs were really repetitive, and therefore, boring to me. The flute on Bob's your uncle belonged in a bit on a sketch comedy show. There were cringe inducing lyrics throughout. I really didn't like anything about this one. Solid 1
Is niet helemaal mijn soort muziek
Komplett langweilig.
Das Ding hat mich nicht nur nicht gekriegt, es hat mich sehr genervt. Klang für mich wie Talking Heads aber weniger gut und die haben mich ja auch schon nicht gekriegt. Naja der Lauf der letzten Tage war auch zu gut
nothing
I thought I liked it at first, then I realised I didn't.
This "list" goes downhill a little everyday huh?
I was willing to give this 2 stars, figuring that there was some good reason why it was a thing back in 1990. Even after Bob's Yer Uncle which is a truly horrible song, I was willing to give the album a full and fair listen. But after that it was yet another song with a single unchanging drum pattern for 5 fucking minutes and it really pissed me off. The hi hat just started feeling like an ice pick in my ears and I was done. One star. Playlisted: Loose Fit, Grandbag's Funeral, Kinky Afro.
I was surprised to see how beloved this album is in some quarters. I wasn't familiar with it at all. Alas, it was... what's the word I'm searching for... annoying. It was kind of annoying.
Back to back dog shit 🥵
Sounds like a club DJ and an Oasis cover band were both hired to play the same wedding by mistake, but instead of sending one away, they forced them to play together on the same stage at the same time. Atrocious. Also, what the fuck is with “Bob’s Yer Uncle”? That is a blatant sex crime and I someone needs to be arrested for recording that.
En kuunnellut kun alku oli niin huono. 1,25/5.
Not quite
They must have been a very charismatic live band. They were one of the main underground bands of their time. Can’t be because of the music. Especially the singing is really bad. I don’t like anything about this record.
Oh HELL no. This is suffering. Atonal, says nothing, no aesthetic, not heavy, not light, no real plotline or narrative, this is like blur but without any charisma. Deeply uncool music. It's not even small guys or a home made aesthetic. There are literal bedroom USB stick albums better than this.
I always saw people with shirts for this band. Or maybe hats? But never heard them. I can’t even remember seeing their records at record stores. “Kinky Afro” is doing nothing for me. But I remember everyone in happy Mondays gear always looking sad. And this song tracks with that. 🤣😂 Second track is better. I like the groove. And I wonder if the lo fidelity all stars took inspiration from this track. It sounds like whatever their hit was (battle flag). “Donovan” reminds me of a PIL song, right down to Johnny Rotten vocals. I’m on the 4th track now. So far this album is not for me.
Can someone explain this band to me ? Because I truly don’t get it. I don’t understand what they’re trying to do, and I don’t understand what people see in them. It just feels so completely amateurish to me, it was painful to listen. The music is abysmal, and the singing feels like nails on a chalkboard (seriously, the singer sounds like the local tavern drunk was allowed on stage for a live karaoke session). I tried listening as background music, but even then it was exhausting. Sorry, I just can’t.
Profoundly boring and inspiring. The opening song is remotely interesting, it goes downhill fast after that. It sounds like something Rick created, Neil is into and Vyvyan rightly trashes. 90s music in all the wrong ways.
I can’t put my finger on why, but i found this album to be extremely irritating
I know, I know that curating any list of albums that are the best, most significant, or popular is always going to be an impossible task. But seriously, THIS album? How can its inclusion be justified? It's not that popular, or good, or influential, is it? The band has a separate maraca player, for God's sake. This is perhaps the most glaring example of the curators' Britpop-philia so far. And to top it off, I didn't enjoy this at all. Flat, tuneless, lyrics that are nearly meaningless.
Not a very interesting one, weird lyrics, but the backing vocals were nice. 3/10
Was it a joke?
Hvítir strákar að syngja um "kinky afro"... hmmmm soldið spes Það minnir mig smá á "you've been kris jennered" lagið "yippy yippy yaya dada" Næsta lag er reyndar frekar woke þannig ég er smá confused Það er bara verið að moana á fullu í Bob's yer Uncle Þetta er í heildina ekki beint mitt vibe. Ekki eitt lag sem fær að fara á playlista.
1 Stern
Did nothing for me.
DNF
This is kinda boring ngl.
I had never heard of this band, and I just found out that Manchester, in 1990, could give birth to a group that sounds like it’s from 1985. I understand that they make sense because it vaguely contributed to the early days of the local electronic scene.Their most prominent member is a dancer/maracas player who can neither dance nor play the maracas. This album is supposed to be the peak of their short career.
Which bellend thought this belonged on this list? Slog to get through, nothing of value here.
Similar to other 80’s/90’s music in this genre, it’s just crap.
This fucking album is as meh as possible. The Truly meaning of ridiculous. I'm so angry with this fuck that i don't have too much to say. And to the traditional families that probably are reading my review i apologize for the bad words but i need to put my anger somewhere. I hate mondays in general and now i hate Happy Mondays.
Very boring no real highlights
the english need to be stopped
Not for me. The mix of British 80s into proto-90s does not age well.
If you made it past Bob's Yer Uncle, you're a stronger person than me. Jesus Christ that was insufferable.
I didn’t even finish it. Vocals are horrible
Yep, this garbage will give you a bellyache. But no thrills.
Different
The only good part of the album is when they rip off Lady Marmalade for one line.
Highlights: Kinky Afro, Denis and Lois -Truly funky -Lacks the energy it needs at times -I find the vocals really lacking -What the actual fuck is Bob's Yer Uncle. I haven't felt more uncomfortable listening to a song in my entire life -Doesn't really have that much to make it interesting so it gets boring a lot of times -The lyrics are mostly shit -Overall boring and uninteresting album, wouldn't listen to it again Rating: 3/10
Nothing special, just more Britpop that I have come to expect from this list.
Just totally glazed over listening to this one - nothing here I even remotely enjoyed
Fuck britpop and whatever this is, too. 1.3
not really my thing.
Couldn't make it through. Some tracks were mildly interesting, but many were just grating.
Niet mijn ding
No me gustó
Nooo I can make it Just one month Please have mercy 1
Nicht meine Richtung
ummm wtf
Not a fan. Bland garbage that didn’t feel different or new for being from 1990
Really didn’t enjoy any of this
Just noise to me. 1/5
cool concepts. flop album.
Just didn't like this album. It sounded like worse versions of bands I like and don't like. 1/5
Soort van post 80 vibe. Word er helemaal gestoord van.
Trippy, Brit-hippie nonsense. I like some of the Martin Hannett-associated stuff, but this ain't one of them. Sounds like the Spin Doctors fucked Blind Melon and the offspring were raised on a diet of cheap ecstasy and dirt weed in Manchester.
This was terrible
OK so the album opens w/ a song called "Kinky Afro" and then you look up at the player & there's an actual music video for it, in which you see.... a bunch of awkward white guys bopping along as they play to a bunch of expressionless white women awkwardly swaying back & forth. The rest of the album was a mix of horribly annoying & constantly-sliding-off-tune half-spoken half-sung wails, and just plain generic. Maybe this album has some special meaning to Brits for some reason, but I won't be listening to them again.
I don't get it. Is this a joke or too much a product of its time?
back when people were looking forward to what future holds with stupid optimism "whohooo, let's ride, ride on, ride on!" absolute nightmare to listen to awful voice the epitomy of "repeat the same notes enough times, they could start sound somewhat pleasant" how did this make it on the list is beyond me, I can find 10000 albums more interesting, pleasant and important. or was it somehow so influential that it absolutely needs to be heard?
Is this what sublime would have sounded like if Bradley Nowell had stayed clean?
Wasn’t really my jam.
Unfortunately, this feels like it’s right in between two genres that I don’t really enjoy. I feel the 90s Manchester punk rock club scene creeping in, which to me just feels dirty and sticky and it’s something that I can’t identify with. I also feel the distant drum machines of the late 80s new wave, and I just don’t enjoy it. It just feels grimy to me, like a hangover where I wake up with a bad taste in my mouth. Numbly violent. And I feel like the people that it bred are people that I don’t actually connect with very much. So, I feel bad to hate an album that I’m sure means a lot to a lot of people. I mean, it certainly made me feel something. Just not the feeling I ever really want to have.
1/5 Best: Kinky Afro Worst: Loose Fit
the cover is more interesting than music
DNF
I don't like this music.
Why do I keep getting BritPop in here
Nope.
Don’t see anything redeemable about it. Boring as hell
No.
there’s nothing happy about mondays
Yeah, didn't love it. A little too poppy. A little boring.
God what an annoying album, I wholeheartedly prefer silence. No favorite track
Despite the cover art, this album is kind of boring and uninteresting to me. Guess you had to be there.
Langweilig und verzichtbar.
Could’ve gone without this one also. 90’s movie soundtrack vibes. I do not like 90’s music. Why does this website suggest that I do?
No es mi estilo
not enjoyable
Even their big hit, "Step On" was ranking a solid 2 for me, at most. It felt muddy, like the songs had no clear direction.
Kind of hit and miss for me 3
Could not determine as half the tunes were blocked out on spotify.
