Reviews (page 5 of 7)

I went in with low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this.

Se questo album fosse al colloquio per un posto nella mia playlist gli direi che gli farò sapere per poi non richiamare mai più

Not at all as bad as what I was thinking. This list of 1001 is filled with so many festering turds that after a while you get gun shy and assume anyone you haven’t heard of is going to suck. But every once in a while you just get good old simple music, and it’s pleasant and joyful. That’s this.

The Mondays are legends but they're not one of my favourite bands. This album is pretty groovy , it's not quite a 3 but I'll give 3 anyway.

It’s not as good as The Stone Roses but it has a pleasant nostalgia to it and there’s an energy to it- maybe drug fuelled- that recalls the chaos of the Hacienda era Manchester.

Fun album, nothing too special imho, but fun. Solid 3.5

This was fine, not great not terrible

yipiyipi ayayayayaaa. Pero el resto un poco rollo.

Happy Britpop.

Not bad but in my opinion just another mediocre alt-rock English band on this list.

wasn’t bad, didn’t take much out of it but there’s some good songs on it

Quite enjoyed this, singles tracks are great

yeah not great but hard to hate

On Loose Fit Dennis and Lois

Before listening: Were these the guys that sang "We are young, we are free"? I don't know much about them except every time someone mentions the Stone Roses, they mention the Happy Mondays. Were they Britpop? Proto Britpop? This should be fun, British 90s rock kinda tickles my nosty itch. After listening: So it turns out Supergrass sang "We are young, we are free." Sorry about that. This album was just ok for me. I can see why they're always associated with the Stone Roses; it's because every one of their songs sounds like fucking Fools Gold! Every goddam one! Anyway, I guess I like the album because I like Fools Gold.

Reminded a bit of U2, but not as good imo. Stand-out: Harmony

Nothing I disliked but nothing that really stuck out to me. Easy to listen to but all songs sounded pretty similar and sort of blended together.

So weird. Every song feels like it's *almost* great. Not sure what's missing, but I left feeling unsatisfied and intrigued at the same time. Feels like they were early adopters of a mediocre movement that spawned other mediocre bands like EMF and Jesus Jones.

Pewnie do szybkiego zapomnienia 3/5

Solid album some of the songs are good some are a little annoying. Yipee ipee ay ay ay yey yey

Very '80s without being catchy. Not horrible, but nothing I need to listen to again.

yipiyipi ayayayayaaa. Pero el resto un poco rollo.

I enjoyed this album much more than I thought I would. I happily had it on rotation all day. It’s background music with nothing really standing out and nothing too awful. I’m not interested in listening to additional remixes, but in the spirit of the challenge, I did it just the same.

ну вайбовенько

I had never heard this. It was decent. I like the sound of it.

Kinky Afro - 7/10 God's Cop - 7.5/10 Donovan - 7.5/10 Grandbag's Funeral - 7/10 Loose Fit - 7.5/10 Dennis and Lois - 7/10 Bob's Yer Uncle - 7/10 Step On - 7.5/10 Holiday - 7.5/10 Harmony - 7/10 Step On - 7/10 Kinky Afro - 7.5/10 Loose Fit - 7/10 Bob's Yer Uncle - 7.5/10 Tokoloshe Man - 7.5/10 TOTAL - 109/150

Really feels like that turn-of-the-decade mix. It’s has the 80s elements of synthesized drum beats and big sounds, but you can start to hear the industrial dark-rock mix into it. Like a drug hangover. The music is complex enough, with thoughtful sound and mix. However, I couldn’t get into it to any meaningful amount.

Seemed like this album might have been recorded in different methods/locations. First half was kind of boring, but there were a couple standouts on the back half that were much more pleasing to listen to and the vocals were solid. Overall meh, maybe in the 900's as far as rankings out of 1000 albums.

Listened Before? N Meh, it was okay. I think this is too British for me. Didn't really care enough to focus on it. It seemed very musically complex though so +1. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Step On

Some good grooves. Reminds me of Charlatans UK. A bit repetitive.

Ok, kinda boring ..... perfectly competent.

Another band (and frankly style of music) that I was not familiar with, but was pleasantly surprised when listening to this album. This isn't exactly my style of music, but I did appreciate it. Favorite tracks: Kinky Afro, God's Cop, Loose Fit, Step On.

3/5. Well-written and catchy, upbeat songs make you want to vibe with them. Nothing too crazy offered here but I did enjoy it nonetheless. English rock with some influence from the Stone Roses and some other funk and punk elements creates a some fun songs but nothing influential.

An enjoyable trip back to the 90s

So fun

Cover Impressions: I have no clue what to expect from this ransom note of an album cover. Maybe some psychedelic stuff due to the pills, graphics, and positivity towards Mondays. So I wasn't too far off. And I don't immediately hate it so I count that as win. I know I've heard this singer before. Upon a quick search, "Dare" by Gorillaz was the first hit, then upon further looking I had bought a random CD from a second hand store that had a cow on it, and one of those songs was "In the name of the father" by Black Grape, which I rather liked and is this singers follow up project after Happy Mondays. That has nothing to really do with this album, but does help me place the voice and now I'm coming into this with a little different perspective. As this album goes on, I'm thinking now that a full album of this voice and style is a bit much. After the 4th track I had to take a break for a couple hours. That will likely deduct a star or two. Coming back from that break seems to have helped a lot. The second half seemed less extra. "Loose Fit" and "Step On" could make their way into a playlist. Favorite track "Step On" 3/5

3 stars

Happy, lazy, quirky, bright. A little too hazy at times for me, but a pretty pleasant listen. Best song: Dennis and Lois

Its a fun sound, sort of 90s pop punk

I don't think I've heard of this band, but I'm sure I've heard their stuff. A touch of pearl clutching lyrics. Good Stuff over all

3.75/5

The music was fun, but I didn’t love the singer’s voice. Also, I was definitely ready for the album to end long before it did. But I really did like the music.

i enjoyed this but there is one song on this album that sounds juuust enough like megalovania to get that stuck in my head. well played, album from 1989, i never saw it comin'

Not bad! Not great! It's fine!

Very indicative of late 80s/early 90s club pop. Interesting, but not enough substance for my tastes.

- God's Cop - Loose Fit

Prima album. Maar niet memorabel

Klarer Rock, klare Strukturen - und ok, nette Hintergrundmusik.

A classic from the north. 3.4

Peaked with Kinky Afro (first song) and downhill into mediocrity from there. Step On stands out at the end. Influence on Oasis/Blur sound is apparent.

Alternative Rock. Not my usual style but enjoyable enough.

Great find

Enjoyable but not brilliant.

A generous 3*, gets very samey and Shaun Ryder is very limited in what he can add to the band

The 2 periods of time where I would have most loved to have been in my 20s would have been mid-late 60s and early 90s - I’d have been no use to anyone but would have had the best time! This is from that period where every band was just made up of some blokes from down the pub - which means every album starts with some bangers then slowly fizzles out into the same track repeated over and over - gets very boring! Maybe pills would make it better? 3.1

well slap my ass and call me Garfield

I wrote for luck, they brought me this

Good album, but most of the songs sometimes have instrumentals that drag on, and the lyrics are sometimes nonsense. I don’t think I would fit well within the Madchester scene, and this album reeks it all. Favorite: “Step On” Least Favorite: “Grandbag’s Funeral” 3.4/5

BL: this album in many ways does mean some things to me. While never listening to the whole record. “Step On” is a track I’ve been aware of before and even played live a couple times in some cover bands. I also often have Bez cross my mind, I see him as somewhat the UK’s answer to Steve-O (jackass era). So it’ll be interesting to hear the rest of this record outside of the aforementioned track and “Kinky Afro” AL: this record had some real bangers in it. The general upbeat tone of this album and the madchester movement as a whole really creates a good vibe. The similarities to primal scream is massive, though that album certainly trumps this one in every way. Very solid listen though don’t think it quite deserves it’s place on this list compared to some other madchester albums FT: “Donovan”, “Grandbag’s funeral”, “Step On” 3/5

I recognize one or two of these songs but I don't think I knew who the band was. Now, of course, I do, thanks to this album appearing today in my rotation. I enjoyed listening to this album. I especially like it when they lock into a nice groove, like the one we hear in songs like 'Loose Fit' and 'Bob's Yer Uncle' and a few others. Very skilled musicians. Real tight. Good stuff.

Singles: Step On, Kinky Afro, Loose Fit, Bob's Yer Uncle Standouts: Kinky Afro, Step On

I didn't really have any background on Happy Mondays before this. I don't think it's something I'd actively seek out but I can imagine it being good background music for a party

everybody talks about britpop in terms of Blur vs. Oasis but nobody talks about it in the form of Primal Scream vs. Happy Mondays

It's madchester man! Easy to hear the same stew brewing from the Stone Roses and Primal Scream's Screamadelica. Touches on jangle pop (Kinky Afro), blues riffs (God's Cop), dancy beats (Step On), shimmery guitar over proto trip hop drum and bass (Loose Fit). Lots of auxiliary percussion and samples throughout. Very distinct sound while also running the gamut of forms and styles.

Would have been three and a half if halves were an option

Pleasant! Singer not quite as dynamic as an Albarn or a Gallagher but some groovy instrumentals here. Love the Brit-hop / trip-pop vibe on Loose Fit (pinkie swear this was in here before others mentioned it lol) and the kooky horns on Bob's Yer Uncle

Rounding down, but I definitely enjoyed this. The back half dragged for me, but a very solid record.

Canciones de estilo pop-rock suave. Con algún toque un tanto disco. Se puede escuchar, aunque no destaca especialmente. Nota justa

some neat riffage

Decent madchester stuff, pretty groovy

Helt swag sämre i andra halvan

Þetta er að mestu alveg ágætis plata. Skil samt ekki af hverju helv falska flautinu var hleypt í gegn á sínum tíma. Fæ alveg hroll yfir því. Að öðru leyti fínt stuð. Enda Englands-árið mitt.

3.4 I enjoyed the album and I think I will give it another run-through and check out some of the remixes. I just never got into bands like them and the Stone Roses.

HL: “Kinky Afro”, “Bob’s Yer Uncle”, “Loose Fit”, “Donovan” Bad album name File this under my “big dumb fun” albums. Which is to say I didn’t need it today, but I might need it down the road. Music video for “Kinky Afro” added to the positive experience 3.5 November 26, 2023

Not too bad but nothing catchy.

I couldn't get past this being fine. It walked a line between too little and too much for me and never went one way or the other. I kind of wanted it to go more toward too much. But maybe hearing it on a Thursday kills the whole vibe?

Absolutely nothing stands out, unremarkable at best.

Wel oke

3 étoiles, sympa mais très daté 90's

This album was alright, there was something about it that didn't quite move me. Not sure, maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for it today. It was fine enough, good even, but some of the lyrics were kind of vulgar in a childish way - something that rubbed me the wrong way a little bit? Not sure. I'm not a prude, but I felt like it detracted from the music a bit. Still, all and all, an alright time to be had.

Does really do it for me.

This was listenable enough, but I never really got into it. I'm not so much a fan of the vocals, although I appreciate the instrumentation.

It was fine. I liked it better than the previous Happy Mondays album I was given early on in this project. But I won’t seek it out or put it on again of my own choosing.

Not super into this, I think maybe just didn’t age well. Kinda generic sounding now, at the time in 1990 probably would have blown me away more.

Nothing great or horrible about this album, just very average and unexceptional. Meh ok.

Kinky Afro // Step On // 2.5-3/5

Funny that a band called Happy Mondays has a song called Donovan. I liked some of there stuff but found there was a bit too much filler.

So this is one of the first "Indie-Dance" albums and it does have a bit more of a rhytymic beat though there is no mention of drum machines. I guess the yet-to-be famous Paul Oakenfold as producer had some influence on that. My favorite song is "Bob's yer Uncle" but it doesn't get mentioned by the critics. Back up vocals by Rowetta are also good.

interesting album, hard to describe but pretty consistent

I easily forget that this album is playing. It might not exist and the world would remain the same.

Some tracks show that this album could be enjoyable but most of it is forgetable.

It was pretty good, take me back to my youth. Couple a classic tracks on here.

Ah, the kitschy kitschy ya ya song. This did nothing for me. Not sure why we need it here when we’ve also had primal scream.

Another good but unnecessary album for this list. I do like most of it as the blend of britpop and dance beats are mixed well. Some of it reminds me of The Style Council a little.

Reminded me of Primal Scream in its fusion of british rock with club music. I didn't love that and don't love this either. It was fine to have playing in the background as I worked, but I don't think I'd ever choose to put this on again.

Not bad, just not my kind of thing. So far up its own arse.

Pills n’ Thrills and Bellyaches sounds exactly how the cover looks. It’s wild and chaotic. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a band attempt to combine more different genres into one sound. To their credit they were pioneering much of those sounds. I had never heard of the Happy Mondays before today and they deserve more listens before I should judge but I’m going to judge anyways. At its peak (Kinky Afro) this album is brilliantly creative brit rock. The album in general is ambitious and very dense. It combines funk, new wave, brit rock even grunge but for me there is just too much 90s electro pop/dance. I can’t stop hearing MC Hammer. Respect the effort but 6.3

dance music?

Decent. Not exactly my taste but was interesting enough.

Not very memorable, simple kinda groovy repetitive beats

First track had a nice bass line I would like to replicate. Overall not something I would add to my playlists, but I would ask "who's this" if I listened to it at a friends place.

Bourgeoning Brit pop deeply partnered with 90s pop. A fun listen

So 90s! Kind of like a crappy Red Hot Chili Peppers

Breathy vocals but with warm sounds, and what would eventually be a predictable beat that defined early to mid 90s, PT&B could make the argument for having done all of it first. The album is not so spectacular, nor is it boring or bad. Music can be so middle of the road during the beginning of new trends, and this could just be some of the best of that.

Sounds like the tail end of the 80's pop British invasion. Fun and fresh sounding. Enjoyable listen. For me there was no standout song or anything that really caught my ear. Maybe, Holiday. Good vibe, good time, good listen.

I was hoping for more from this album. I liked the first song and not much else.

Some good stuff

It's decent, another generation might even call it pleasant while another brands it as listenable. But it's not life altering and I can see why these so called Happy Mondays never blew up. Ultimately, they sound a little too much like Jesus Jones.

I like baggy Madchester in small doses. A while album of this is really more than I can take all at once.

I'm not sure what that point of this record is. It feels like people trying to be hip and funky... but they are not naturally hip and funky people. Karaoke in an album format? Perhaps. I suppose on second listen they occasionally manage to be hip and funky, though it feels forced. I may give them a three just because I'm feeling sorry for them. The music isn't terrible... but it's certainly not great. LOL I try to not read the Wikipedia entry until after I form my opinion -- but this is almost comical in that the 1001 list is often derided as being too UK centric and having too many mediocre UK acts on it... and yeah, here's another one.

ok 7.5/10

3.5 stars

I want to like these guys but apart from the singles it's generic 90s Madchester music for clubs and raves. I guess you've got to be in the mood.

Meh, good fun I guess.

Pretty fun. Gets some disco vibes. 3.5

3.5/5. You’re twisting my melon man!

3.7 - Considering that this came out in 1990, it holds up surprisingly well. Manchester must've been a popping scene in those days. I like the ravey, dancey elements and the jangly guitar lines. Perfect as upbeat background music that doesn't demand a close read of the lyrics. I couldn't name any standout songs individually but it's all a sunny, consistent vibe with some quasi- trippy flavor.

Decent. Heard better and heard worse.

Really like the instrumentation here, but the singer is terrible.

This was fun. I'd listen to it again.

I recall Happy Mondays on the radio, driving around town in a region far, far removed from the UK House scene. The trippy beats and sloppy (clearly under the influence) vocals were eminently catchy, but a nagging issue vexed me, drove me to search my soul to contemplate a conundrum: Is this band genius or garbage. Having had much more time to listen to and learn about the band (dramatized in 24 Hour Party People, for example) I think they're still catchy but rubbish. They vividly illustrate the experience or getting wasted and partying in the most unflattering ways. I'd give this record a 2 if it weren't for the one track that still intrigues me with the sing-song phrase morphing - "God's Cop" - made it easy on me / rains disease all on me / got soul 2 soul / got slowly stoned... I still can't be sure whether that's inspired or just inebriated.

As we can see in that awful cover art, it's quite a hodgepodge. A hodgepodge of rock tunes.

Really bland and forgettable, like the last album but worse. Still a 3 though

Somehow this was filled with energy but I wasn't enjoying it haha. The first half of the album was stronger than the rest.

This was just mediocre 90s Europe pop.

A few good songs but overall the album did not move me. Didn't hate it, didn't love it.

whatever

Mad for it!

Quite liked this, more than I thought I would.

Actually not bad. Had no idea what to expect. Saw the album cover and the name and thought I was in for a disaster, but it wasn't what I thought it'd be. Seems like it's adjacent to the Madchester Stone Roses/Primal Scream thing, but lesser known. It definitely fits in that area, but doesn't have the same heft as either of those bands. Standouts: Kinky Afro, Bob's Yer Uncle, Step On

Still today, living relatively close to Manchester, it’s rare to go a week without hearing Step On by the Happy Mondays somewhere, whether that’s on a local radio station, in a shop somewhere, or simply in your own head. I’ve never listened to the album in full before now, so let’s listen! Songs I already knew: Kinky Afro, Step On Favourites: Step On, Dennis and Lois Well today I learned that the Happy Mondays had more than one big song. I immediately recognised Kinky Afro and never realised it was this band. Well there we go. Overall, the album was fun, but it was a bit samey. If you’ve heard Step On, you’ve pretty much heard this whole album really. It felt like a fine album to have on as background music while doing something else, but the lacking variety can make it grow a little stale if the music itself is the focus. Still, a decent listen.

The experience of listening to the original album for the first time is probably better. The idea of making Collector's edition the default version for this album makes no sense. Do we really need a Euro version of "Kinky Afro" or a Twisting My Melon Mix Remastered version of "Step On"?

2.5 stars

First half is excellent, unfortunately it falls off quite a bit towards the end for me.

Nice Stone Roses-esque sound.

An ok album with some funky little songs, such as Kinky Afro, Loose Fit, wouldn't listen to it as a whole again, I enjoy the early 90's synth feel.

Nice little album good for happy background music

Free love. Acid. Bongos. In one fell swoop, the Happy Mondays party like it’s 1967. I’ve never dropped acid, I’ve never been to a rave, and I’ve never leapt around a stage handling my maracas. But I did live in Salford for three years, which I felt gave me a gateway into the Happy Mondays’ screwball technicolour dream. Most of the time, “Pills ‘N’ Thrills And Bellyaches” radiates the kind of sunny optimism that must have been pervasive on the UK dance floor throughout the early 90’s. It’s a fun listen, and feels inseparable from the time of its creation: at its peak, it made me nostalgic for a time I never knew and a person I never was. The best tracks are obvious from the outset. There’s the fire-starting “Kinky Afro” with its killer opening line, the sneering “God’s Cop” with its disarmingly euphoric chorus, and of course “Step On”: swaggering confidence, meaty guitar, Shaun Ryder’s unbeatable charisma. The most surprising moment for me was “Harmony”, an unexpected pop gem to carry the listener away into the ether. These tracks struck me as the most convincing blend between a guitar-based indie band and the emergent rave culture, staying buoyant without losing their teeth. The liberal borrowing from other songs, and “Step On” itself being a cover, doesn’t especially bother me: in this case, I think it’s justified alongside the album’s “anything goes”, anarchic party atmosphere. The main problem for me is that “Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches” isn’t always very danceable. Despite a very strong opener with “Kinky Afro” and “God’s Cop”, things start to dwindle from there: “Grandbag’s Funeral” feels like a ramshackle garage jam session, “Loose Fit” has none of the immediacy of the other singles, and by “Bob’s Yer Uncle” it feels a little too baggy and unfocused. All in all, though, this is a likeable listen and an undeniably cool album to have in one’s collection. My favourite exhibit of Shaun Ryder’s humour? His perversion of Donovan’s “Sunshine Superman” into “sunshine shone brightly through my arsehole today.” Yes it did, Shaun- don’t you know it.

an interesting but not super compelling mix of british hippie vibes and clubby acid jazz

Some nice moments here and there, but overall this ends up leaving me exhausted. Their sound absolutely matches the album cover's aesthetic though; a high contrast pop collage.

Kind of neat, a bit surprising in the diversity but there wasn't a song or moment that really grabbed me. 3.5 to 3.

Decent listen but gets irritation after a while

Pretty good, the sounds were interesting.

2.5 rounding up to 3. Unique music, some good tracks like Grandpa. Def a Manchester vibe. Oakenfold did a great job producing and this is a really funky album with beats, strings, brass, rapping, singing, and all sorts of interesting sounds and layers.

Enjoyable enough groove, fun album. But no clue why it is included on this list. 3.5

Alright, but i got taken by surprise a few times

Better than their other album. Drags a bit and is quite 1 note but cool

Happy Mondays is a British "Madchester" band. Madchester was a music movement in the 80's and 90's that took place in and around Manchester, hence the name. It is a blending of indie rock/new wave with acid house and psychadelia music styles. Happy Mondays style features heavy precussion/bongo work with rock style guitar riffs and sometimes funk oriented bass grooves, all while having this super dance-y structure and delivery. Most of the lyrics are nonsensical, and there is also some brass instrument sections on this album. It has a bit of everything. I didn't mind this album, but nothing really jumped out at me either. The whole Madchester genre is kind of weird, and maybe doesn't translate as well on this side of the pond. My favourite song on the record, as shown below, is Tokoloshe Man (which isn't on the original record, but was included in the Spotify linked "Collectors Edition). If I were to have a favourite from the actual album, it would be Loose Fit. Favourite songs: Tokoloshe Man, Loose Fit, Step On, God's Cop, Kinky Afro Least favourite songs: Grandbag's Funeral, Harmony 3/5

Loose.

Good dance album that works on a few levels. 3.5 stars

Definitely not my normal thing, but I can enjoy it

Head nodding but forgettable

Mehta, it's decent, but nothing really stands out. Not bad though.

I haven’t listened to much from Happy Mondays before and this album was very exciting! Such a true mix of a lot of things. Can tell the lyrics were fuelled by opium! My top track was Bob's yer Uncle but found some of the others a tad stressful at certain points but recognise that is mostly my own weirdness haha.

An enjoyable album if somewhat crass and dated at points. An uptempo way to start a Wednesday, at least.

Pop. Rock. Insulso.

The 90s are alive in 2007

That’s Brit rock all right

Unique sound. An interesting blend of 80s and 90s rock sounds. However, as a whole it fails to leave a lasting impression.

Typical late 80s, pre Brit Rock with a few decent songs but not enough to warrant more than 3 stars

Veldig anonymt album

Not bad.

J’ai bine aime, genre de rock pop, ca sonne comme queque chose qu’on a roujours ente du et c’est bien bon, dans le me style que certains albûms usr cette liste maus pa s plus. 3.5

Favourite song: Step On (think it’s familiarity bias in honesty though.) One for the karaoke: Kinky Afro One for the car: Dennis and Lois I reckon this was all that was going played in Ute’s dressing room in the early 90s

Think the album starts weak but gets better. Some alright tracks toward the middle. Voice was offputting at times, trying too hard for that daft manc vocal sound. Thought the back up vocals were used well. Favourite song - Loose Fit Holiday was catchy.

Favourite song - Grandbags Funeral One for Karaoke - Step On One for a run - Kinky Afro Only ever heard the hits and didn’t expect it to be this good. Will deffo dive in again Bez style

Never heard of this one. I liked it

I like the Happy Mondays- it’s been a minute since I’ve listened to Step On.

God's Cop, Donovan, Loose Feet y Step On son suficientes para reconocer el valor de este disco (mucho mejor que el otro que incluyeron en esta lista de 1001 el Bummed).

Felt like I would have liked this more, but it just didn't grab me for most of the album.

um.. this isn't me at all but why was I vibing with it

Interesting mix of stuff here! I can see myself having a great time dancing along to this at a live show, with the rock and sometimes Latin and sometimes dance beats.

Musically, the Mondays layered indie-pop guitars with house, funk and Northern soul beats. Yeah okay (6/10). FT: Step On

Late 80s sound in the early 90s

rock interessante, cara de anos 80/90

Preffered the Charletans and Stone Roses over any other Madchester band from that time but this album is ok as well, the sound is a bit dated but it contains several well-known singles and some good album tracks, 3.5 stars

The singles are great (although a little overplayed) but it feels a little too clean compared to the hazy fug of Bummed

It's cool, but it's extremely basic

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Kinky afro

Ehh.. pretty middle of the road. Hard to really comment anything exceptional. Just pretty average music.

I used to love this album but it’s dated and equally tough to relate to an album which is mostly about getting stoned when you‘re in your 50s.

Some bangerzzzz. Not as drug fuelled a mess as I was half expecting. Proper talent o can only dream of.

another one for the 'appreciation rather than enjoyment' column. they've always kinda bored me

Unremarkable

I am partial to this genre of music. This wasn't stand out for me but I suspect that has more to do with not being familiar with it. However I can't see myself going back to it.

Pretty cool

It is better than I remembered, some good songs but overall it is just "good"

first listen bouncy but doesn't have a lot of spark

No mention of Lady Marmalade on the reviews? How so?

When it comes together it really is something great. Too bad it falls apart more often than succeeding, with the vocalist nosediving into a bad Joe Strummer impression and the songs meandering around going nowhere. But man, when it works, it slaps.

As alluded to earlier in this project, Primal Scream's music blew my mind when I first heard it, and I started with some of their worse output. The Mondays put me in a similar state of mind, but I haven't found their mind-blowing record yet. This one has just enough variety in it to pique my interest, especially with the strings on the second tracks. Strings are a soft soft spot after all. Other than that, beats are uniformly good if not uniformly distributed, and the song structures rote.

Happy guitar based music

3.5 I'd say, not bad. A bit noisy at times. Didn't inspire me too much (as you can probably tell).

Pretty meh album. Nothing wrong with the album, but nothing that standouts either. It would be alright background music. "Step On" probably the best song in my opinion

Forgotten quite how much fun this was. It plays well from start to finish; I thought it was a hits album, but only 3 UK singles are here, the rest of the album is fun, musically and lyrically, and fizzes along at a fair pace. Top tracks: kinky afro, step on, Donovan

Liked this one back in the day. Sounds a bit dated now. Still has some good grooves though.

Some really great tracks, but some average ones too

Just OK. Maybe I was just born a few years too late but I feel like a lot of the Madchester stuff is massively overrated.

Really interesting but not really my jam--and there are some uncomfortable songs on there to say the least... I'll give it a 3 for creativity.

Good album, fun and funky

Consistent with my reaction to the Madchester/baggy thing, I liked this OK but am not quite seeing the level of adulation.

Enjoyed it!

I had never heard of this group before, but this was a surprisingly fun listen.

Very poppy a bit trippy it was fun

Meh... served ok as a palette cleanser from The Wall.

I don't have a problem with this music, but I don't find much new, amazing or inspiring about it. There's some good musicianship and some fun hooks. I'd be fine if one of the songs came on, but I probably wouldn't seek it out.

Rock / dance hybrid, reminds me of Pop Will Eat Itself but softer. The 2009 remaster I listened to had some remixes which are better than the source material.

Interesting album. I have not heard any of the songs before and I was not familiar with the band. It was alright.

Highlights: Donovan

not my genre of music...

so far it's decent - very of that era.... i'll come back to it for a party or smth

It's just average pop.

Got a few good songs and would be good fun to watch at a festival.

Good album, has good vibes from the time. Very Manc

3/5 nothing remarkable.

Ganz witzig!

More 1990s indie-dance stuff. This is much more consistent than the Primal Scream records I reviewed. The music is pretty impeccable, blending rock & pop seamlessly with house - not superficially, but as a full synthesis, that no longer sounds like any of the component styles. It sounds really good. Manages to evoke the 1990s amazingly, while still sounding fresh. Production job is definitely good quality here! However, I don't really get any enjoyment from Sean Ryder's drug-addled leering. I'd prefer the whole album if it were instrumental, or even better if it had some talented singers and songwriters involved... This is probably what ruined the album for me the first time, when I borrowed my dad's cassette copy back in the 2000s. Despite the Ryder depreciation, it's still a 3.5.

An easy 3. Great fun if you're in the mood for it. Some bangers

An enjoyable enough album by an overrated band.

Their “high” point

Step On, Kinky Afro, God's Cop, Donovan, Bob's Yer Uncle y ya.

Not great but there were some cool songs on here. The whisper singing is really annoying. 6 from me or a 7 if I’m generous.

Okay beats. Not entirely memorable, though maybe that's because I was focusing more on driving through heavy rain lmao. 5

Listenable and vibey

"Show you what the cats been doing, and how he gets around You can't wake him, he's not sleeping He never comes down "(Grandbag's funeral) "Honey how's your breathing If it stops for good we'll be leaving" (Dennis and Lois) O wikipedia o yo tenemos un concepto equivocado de lo que es "house". Empieza bastante arriba, pero se hace un poco repetitivo hacia la mitad.

5. Some was kinda fun but nothing great

yipiyipi ayayayayaaa. Pero el resto un poco rollo.

Pretty boring and some of the songs were flat-out bad. But it's mostly just generic rock-y music. 5

Love the album cover! I could listen to this every 3 months. Two fantastic songs.

Fun songs but started to feel repetitive in style

Totally fine and ordinary. I think i remember Step On from back in the day, but don't particularly like it. The rest of the tracks a de facto alternative pop. It could have been my jam back in the day, but doesn't hold up too well for the new listener. Fine.

De inicio se siente como los papás de bandas como Kasabian, rockeronas y movidas. Hasta que entran los coros de la época y se la pasa mostrando momentos tipo eurodance. Las mejores creo que sí son las más conocidas, God's Cop y Step On.

Enjoyable bop

A few jams. Enjoyable

This album cover feels very right

legalzinho mas não é meu estilo, acho que não escutaria de novo

Honestly, I didn't pay a ton of attention, but I suspect I would enjoy this more on a second listen, I do typically enjoy this type of music.

I have decided this too, is not for me. Well, actually maybe.

Certainly not bad. Upon my first listen, none of the songs really jumped out at me, but rather, there was a consistent quality of fairly catchy, entertaining indie dance music. That said, this isn't something I'll listen to again.

Reminds me of the clash but funkier.

Pretty good!

TIL about Madchester, a genre that blends British alt-rock and dance music. It's about as gross as it sounds. I was pretty disappointed in this album until the last song, which I absolutely loved. Best track: Harmony

Meh. Sounded like typical 80s pop stuff, not really my cup of tea. I think most of the songs sounded a bit stale.

Sort of liked it but about half way through, couldn't wait until it was over.

I don't like the lead singer's voice so this is not a fun or easy listen for me personally. It would have been a 3 if I was just rating the instrumentals, but I am just straight up not having a good time with this one.

Eh. It's fine enough, would be a 2.5 but I usually round up unless it's really bad. Pretty forgettable.

Was ok

Not much here

Listening to on Tuesday so maybe that's my fault but it's very disappointing.

Happy Mondays made for a sad Sunday

I think I enjoyed all the little intricacies on the various album covers more than I enjoyed the album itself.

Some good tracks - songs you can identify from the bass line alone, even if you’re not in the room where it’s playing.

For whatever reason I'm just so-so on this album. Felt very generic.

Skipped most of this. Lame stuff idk. Just didn’t speak to me even a little bit.

sounds like s***** Bob Dylan sometimes. Sounds like not half bad bob Dylan other times for the most part, not my cup of tea

Not terrible, but not really deserving of being on this list.

i'm sat here wondering if i just dont like music as much as i previously thought i did or if this list is just majorly skewed towards genres that i find boring fave track: tokoloshe man

Is this EMF? Is this Jesus Jones? Who cares. Robert Dimery heard it one time trying on jeans in 1991 so it's a MUST LISTEN.

Dette var ..... britisk.

Eclectic mix of sounds. Some fine, some less fine.

No. Just no.

1,001 albums is too many.

yeah… nothing special

Mostly felt meandering and I didn't particularly like the vocal style.

Boring. Each song was long and repetitive. Not interesting enough to keep my interest for very long.

It’s fine. Not something Ill vote go back to but ok listen

No fav song

It’s fine, not for me mostly

i liked it more than i thought i would. nothing really stuck out a ton, but it was inoffensive. kinda already forgot about it from yesterday... but it was realistically a 2.5. i guess ill bump it to 2 for forget-ability

Another generic album that goes in one ear and out the other.

Forgettable.

Just not really for me

ITS DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARE "Step On" is a neat track, but the rest of the album does not leave any impression, often feeling repetitive and a tad obnoxious (i.e. the Eurodance vocal samples that randomly pop up 2/3 through????)

Another tough one to grade. Kinky Afro and Step On are radio staples on some radio stations in the UK. It's maybe hard to listen beyond them when they've become so ubiquitous. Listening to 1001 albums doesn't lend itself to repeat listens really but I might give this one another go so I can see if it comes alive.

This was meh.

Just fine

Sure is a Madchester album. Not really a memorable one though. Just kind of sounds like a less interesting Stone Roses. They have a sort of American tinge to some of their songs, but I really didn't find anything memorable. Not bad, not really noteworthy either if you aren't into the scene.

Decent, nothing special.
